Richard Burns Rally - Rally Simulation 3D-Vision Excellent rating by me ;)
1 / 5
I was so bored from the last rally-games. I played Dirt1 and Dirt2(Demo) and I hated all the Buggy-racing-stuff (the graphics don't make a game). And WRC2010 has a strange driving-feeling - don't know how to describe it.
So I stumbled over this one: Richard Burns Rally. A really hard Rally-Simulation from 2004. Don't even try to play this with keyboard !!!
I loved playing CMR 2005 but this one is a real challenge.
There is a Rally-school to show you the rally-driving-tricks. Then you are ready to go(carefully).
Graphics are outated now but still have a very realistic look. EAX3-Sound can be enabled with Creative-ALchemy and is a great experience - you can here where you drive and on what surface you drive.
And as a big bonus the game works wonderful with 3D-Vision with some tricks.
Native resolution(1920x1080) can be set in "RichardBurnsRally.ini" .
And FOV can be set with a small program called RbrCamHack(You will find it here).(FOVX=2.00 FOVY=0.75 works perfect with 1920x1080)
CamHack needs the file "dx8vb.dll" which can be found in "DX81nteng.exe"(DirectX 8.1b Win2000-Installer). You don't need to install DX8.1 - just unpack the installer with UniExtract or so.
The DLL needs to be registered in Windows. You can do this simply with a *.bat file like this:
DX8VB_REGISTER.BAT
regsvr32 dx8vb.dll
The DLL can be unregistered this way for deinstallation-purposes:
DX8VB_UNREGISTER.BAT
regsvr32 /u dx8vb.dll
I loved and still love that game.
It's in my opinion the only attempt at a realistic Rally simulation game, all the other games I played were arcade and felt extremely wrong, especially when played with a steering wheel.

Well, now that I own this game, I must say that too. What a shame, that i found this game now - over 5 years after release :"> . Driving in RBR feels more realistic than any other rally-game - CMR has ever been only a good attempt.

I remember this gem! It worked excellent in stereo-3d at that time also!
It's definitely one of the harder sims though. You actually need to brake once and a while. :D
Ps: Great screenshots!

RBR is the rally simulation. I have had that game for a while and the driving feel is incredible with the logitech momo force feedback. No game has come close to it in years. I was hoping that the new WRC2010 would be good, but based on your comment, it may not live up to my expectations. The only problem I have, the highest resolution available is 1024..I want it at 1360*768..any ideas?

Resolution in RBR? No problem. You only need to edit your "RichardBurnsRally.ini". It's located in the game directory.
[Settings]
ConstantForceMultiplier = -60
Depth = 32
ForceFeedback = true
Fullscreen = true
MinDepthBits = 24
MinStencilBits = 8
ParticleQuality = high
RenderCarShadow = true
RenderQuality = high
RunIntro = false
RunStartup = false
Sound = true
UseCubicEnvironmentMaps = true
UseEAX = true
UseSoftwareAudio = false
UseTripleScreenBuffers = true
WaitRetrace = true
XRes = 1920
YRes = 1080
You only need to set XRes = 1360 and YRes = 768.
And for the correct 16x9 aspect-ratio you need to install the CamHack-tool. Links and Instructions ar in the first post.

The DLL can be unregistered this way for deinstallation-purposes:
DX8VB_UNREGISTER.BAT

It's in my opinion the only attempt at a realistic Rally simulation game, all the other games I played were arcade and felt extremely wrong, especially when played with a steering wheel.
This game though, what a blast !

Well, now that I own this game, I must say that too. What a shame, that i found this game now - over 5 years after release :"> . Driving in RBR feels more realistic than any other rally-game - CMR has ever been only a good attempt.

[Settings]
ConstantForceMultiplier = -60
Depth = 32
ForceFeedback = true
Fullscreen = true
MinDepthBits = 24
MinStencilBits = 8
ParticleQuality = high
RenderCarShadow = true
RenderQuality = high
RunIntro = false
RunStartup = false
Sound = true
UseCubicEnvironmentMaps = true
UseEAX = true
UseSoftwareAudio = false
UseTripleScreenBuffers = true
WaitRetrace = true
XRes = 1920
YRes = 1080
You only need to set XRes = 1360 and YRes = 768.
And for the correct 16x9 aspect-ratio you need to install the CamHack-tool. Links and Instructions ar in the first post.
