Thinking about the jump...RE5 and others.
Hello everyone!
This is my first post but I have been reading for quite some time on the 3D vision forum here. I'm currently debating on purchasing the 3D vision bundle but I had a couple questions you smart lads may be able to answer:

1. Do any games at all have any "pop off the screen effects?" I've read many are very disappointed with RE5 since convergence can't be adjusted but with a game that you can adjust convergence, do you actually achieve "pop-out" effects?

2. I tested these at my local Microcenter and left with a very minor head-ache, does it take time to adjust? The glasses on display were broken so they "flashed" so I thought maybe that was the case.

3. Is it really taxing on the frame rate to enable the 3D? I am getting a new computer with 8GB of ram, Geforce GTX 260 1792mb, Intel i5 2.66 and 1 TB harddrive 7200rpm. Will that be good enough to run say RE5 with Vision? I wish there was System requirements listed on the box for vision.

Thanks so Much!!

Welcome to the forum.
1-With convergence, yes you can get pop out effect.
2-Definitely will need to get used to but given your circumstance I'd say it was the broken flickering glasses that gave you the headache. Normally for new users the S3D effect could cause dizziness but not headache which is really caused by eyestraining in your case.
3-S3D will slowdown your FPS about 20-30% max., your i5 (should be oc'ed) together with the 260 should run OK with most current games.

1. Yes, most games will achieve pop-out effects but don't expect it the entire game. Even w/o pop-out, games look much better in 3d because you get a great sense for depth.

2. Took me 2 nights to get used to and now I can play for hours unless I switch around the settings...

3. You will notice a drop in framerate with 3d enabled but your compuer will run it just fine. The system requirements are listed online or you can google 'can you run it 3d vision' and your specs will evaluated.

Personally I would go with more than just a gtx 260, even the one with all that ram. I have 2 gtx 285's in sli and I am only getting about 30 fps according to the RE5 benchmark. That's at 1920x1080, everything on high, no AA. 3d vision is pretty taxing on your framerate, but it's game dependent.

I can get pretty good popout on L4D and cod5 and burnout paradise. It doesn't happen much though, just when something comes very close to the camera. Like in cod5 when you aim down your gun it pops out pretty well. I was playing Total War and they looked up at the sky when it was raining at the rain popped out a lot too. Overall though, it was a little bit disappointing. I was expecting more like the Terminator 3d movie at Universal Studios in Orlando where everything is popping way out of the screen. I'm sure it will improve over time. I still love it though, and I hate playing 2d games now. It just feels like something's missing. Overall I'm very happy I bought it.

Oh yeah about eye strain. It doesn't bother me at all. When I first tried it, it tickled my eye a little, but I don't even notice it anymore.

Wow thanks for all the reply's! Yeah the only reason I was thinking about getting the gtx 260 was because it was the only one I can choose from at dell.com that comes with the 3d vision glasses and monitor, hopefully it will be OK. Otherwise maybe I'll pick up another 260 and do sli.

Thanks again everyone for the reply's!

Oh I forgot, would it be worth going with the intel i7 over the i5 for the price, would that make a difference with the vision? The computer I am looking at is: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/con...studio-xps-8000.

It comes with the monitor and glasses practically for free which is nice since right now people save 498.0 on studio 8000.

WOW interesting. if you are going with 8gb of ram make sure you get a 64bit version of Windows. I prefer to build my own but with the free or almost free glasses and monitor this may be a better deal.

I'm using an AMD Phenom 9850 and 2 GTX 285 in sli with 8gigs of ram and Win 7RC 64bit right now and i have extreemly god frame rates for me, between 30 to 60fps depending on the game.

Now if I'm getting a computer through dell am I still able to OC the processor with the stock motherboard? I can't find any information about it on the web.

Dell is notorious for NOT allowing users to overclocking its components. According to my own experience with Dell, their BIOS doesn't allow this and there is nothing you can do. You may want to check with Dell first if you plan to overclock (having an i5 or i7 and not overclocking is a sin). The i5 if anything like the i7 it should be overclocking easily to 4GHz on air cooling. I looked at your Dell's config, the memory is 1066MHz, that's slow and not advantageous for your overclocking, get at least 1600MHz or faster.
