Fermi reviews It's about time
Well, this confirms it, there is absolutely no reason to replace my gtx295 for this thing (my wallet is thanking me now). It also confirms that Metro2033 needs some serious optimization. I started playing last night with 3d vision and it's dominating my computer, but I don't understand why considering it's basically a hallway shooter.
Interesting, I feel the complete opposite. I am for sure getting the 480....I mean it not only beats the 295 in almost all games in avg but the Minimum FPS performance is outstanding beating even the 5970 many times. That along is enough for me.
The SLI performance is just stunning although I doubt my PSU cant handle that kind of SLI...but I hope I am wrong...go Fermi!!

It may beat the gtx295 by some in terms of fps, but not enough for me to warrant the purchase of another $500 card. Plus with its extreme need for energy, and the resulting need for heat dissipation I really feel that waiting for the next iteration is best for me. gtx 485? or a dual gpu gtx 495? I better start saving now!

About that Metro2033...Pushed my clocks up across the board and I'm pleased to say that I am now getting around 40-50fps avg. in this game on normal settings @1080p which I dont mind cause even at that level the game looks amazing in 3d!! Great game all around. This is what Bioshock 2 could/should have been like...instead we got a pile of poo. /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I think the issue is that many ppl just want the latest and greatest no matter what the price is. How many DX11 games are out at the moment? is it enough to warrant getting the 480 with the heat production and the power needs? what's so wrong with the equipment we are running at the moment? I would wait until DX11 becomes more mainstream and maybe the Fermi is refreshed. But I guess I'm just not one of those guys that has the extra cash to blow.

If it wasn't for 3d vision I would be considering ATI cards

Preordered a Fermi 480, even though I own a 295 GTX.
Probably not such a big upgrade in terms of FPS, but SLI gave me occasional headaches in combination with 3DVision.

Presumably gameplay will be more fluid nevertheless. made a similar experience going from 9800GX2 to a 280 GTX, no microstuttering anymore and better minfps.

IMO noise and heat will be comparable between the two cards.

what exactly is Microstuttering? I run two GTX 285s and I don't notice it or I guess I ignore it.

I just bought $1000 worth of parts for a new system, and plan on getting a GTX 480. (i7-930, H50 CPU Cooler, ASRock X58 Extreme, 6BG Crucial RAM, Corsai 750W Modular PSU, Storm Sniper case).

Currently using a GTS 250 in my current somewhat decent system (Only Nvidia card I have, only 'good' card is ATI), and it's just not cutting it it 3D Vision. Already invested a lot in 3D, and you really can't get the most enjoyment out of it unless you have a badass system to make up for the 3D taxation on your system.

I actually can't wait to get my hands on a GTX 480, even though I agree with the consensus that it's a pretty lukewarm part compared to ATI's offerings considering how late Nvidia is. I couldn't really justify giving up 3D Vision for an average performance boost with a 5870 (going from a GTX 280), especially after forking over $400+. For $500 I'll happily keep 3D Vision and get a nice >80% performance increase, give or take. With my single GTX 280 I've been hurting for a 3D performance boost for a while now, and I still refuse to go SLI until the drivers are good enough where a second card will add a second card's worth of performance in all games.

Now, I wonder when Fermi be available without needing to pre-order

Well I get 80-90% increase with SLi in Vantage and vanilla Crysis so you're not far off, I doubt if there's another way you can almost double your FPS so cheaply/easily. I have to quantify that statment by saying you will need a 3.2/4 GHz CPU + a SLI profile for the game of your choice.

That's where it comes into it's own with 3D vision, you halve my frame rate.. I double my GFX cards!! But once again it's all about support, profiles for SLI and 3D are now needed, aslong as your favourite game lands in the sweet spot, you're on to a winner :).

That's actually the biggest thing I think ALL reviewers agree on, the SLI scaling for the GTX 480 is absolutely SUPERB.
