Rear projection curved screen project
Hey,
Had an idea and was wondering if anyone else has tried this yet.
I'm making a curved 120 deg screen, hoping to rear project in 3d, set 1st person shooters to fov 120 deg and have surround 3d, no bezels and on one card.
Starting off with a 4ft wide version and so far its looking pretty good. Need to get some good 'cheap' material for the screen (vinyl shower curtains have been suggested elsewhere.
Anyway, if anyone has tried this would love your input.

I have, I would recommend just buying a good curvedscreen, it'll save you alot of time and have better results.

However if you fell the need to build one, I would build a curved dual metal frame with the outside having many hooks to ensure the right tension across the entire screen. I got this to work to some extent, but it paled in compression to a good curved screen.

I used an eight dollar white shower curtain that I bought at the dollar store when I used to play on my projector. Now I know that isn't nearly good as a professional projection screen but...

It was eight dollars. So there you go.

Your better of going with blackout material. Which is very good and only topped by very expensive screens. For 3d though you really need to pick screen based on fL etc for best results.

How are you going to adjust for the curve projection ,like the farther the light has to travel the wider the image and also not in focus?

First, that degree of curvature is way too much, you only going to get away with minimal curve ( or you need CRT / laser projector, that are focus-free)

LED, bulb DLP is not focus free, Bending acrylic sheet slightly is an excellent idea tho, as it can unbend anyway, and 3x slightly curved RP surround must be big.

If you re in europe, u HAVE to check these out:

another :

http://www.nexnix.co.uk/3d/3d_projection_screen_material.php#

check out how dark their RP is ! If you have ambient light, The darker the way better, blackout and shower whatever is not as good with ambient. (Nexnix going to wrinkle it if you let them ship it their way, you shouldn't let that)

Plexiglas is good for isolated ambient situation and the dark one for ambient. (Plexiglas is better quality if you don't have ambient)

Also don't forget about mirrors.

I also think about stripping anti glare of 2x CRT x 90hz ,enclose them together with partially transparent mirror, and shutterglasses at 180hz. Fresnel lens would make it 30". Sounds hot & cheap, especially once shutters are beyond this polarized whack.

Curved screens can easily be done with a acrylic projection screen, as I was told these rear projection screens will do most of the work of removing the effects of the curve for you. They can even be formed and molded into domes with minimal distortions on the surface with a single projector. however if you cant afford one of those go with a poly rear projection screen. I talked with Robert over at screen solutions and they shipped me a custom screen with velcro already on it, they had a curved frame available too but I cheaped out on that.....

Hope this helps

Thanks for all the reply guys,
I managed to build it with a shower curtain. Its not great but is usable. Basically the throw distance difference caused by the curve is ok with regard to focus (your peripheral vision is quite out of focus anyway). The real problem seems to be the increase in vertical size due to this distance.
Scabell, does the correction help with this issue?

Hello

I will also build a rear projector. Especially because you can do passive 3d without the silver screen, as the light polarity is with most of the rp screens not changed.

I will use CRT projectors, and they have full geometrical controls. So have a look at this software solution for digital projectors:

Here is the famous producer of screen paint, and they offer a rear projection paint to spray on transparent materials:

What he wants is not possible because it'd need intervention on behalf of game developer after a degree. Only Slight Curves Will Work.

Yea, it works just like as it does with curved screens for films. I personally prefer flat screens and you don't want an extreme curve but some really like it.
