Think about a checkerboard. On each horizontal and vertical line, you have half the pixels for the left eye, and half for the right. That gives a resolution of 960x540 per eye. Whereas with 720p, you're getting 1280x720 - significantly higher. Have I missed something?

Sometimes it's useful to actually look at the number of pixels in the video stream. I'm rounding slightly, but here is what they are (2D or per eye 3D pixels):
1080p- 2 million pixels
1080p checkerboard- 1 million pixels
720p- 1 million pixels
960x540- half a million pixels
The advantage of 1080p checkerboard over 720p is that the checkerboard pattern makes it very easy for a native 1080p display to figure out what the missing pixels should be. It's a more efficient arrangement than 720p.

1080p- 2 million pixels
1080p checkerboard- 1 million pixels
720p- 1 million pixels

The advantage of 1080p checkerboard over 720p is that the checkerboard pattern makes it very easy for a native 1080p display to figure out what the missing pixels should be. It's a more efficient arrangement than 720p.
1920 / 2 = 960
1080 / 2 = 540
960x540 = 518,400 per eye
1280x720 = 921,000 per eye
Is that wrong? You do cut both the vertical and horizontal resolution in half, correct?
The main point is that every other pixel is missing in the video stream, so half the overall pixels. So either cut the horizontal resolution in half, or the vertical resolution in half, depending on how you want to look at it. But not both.

Ah, I think I get it. I looked at some images of checkerboards and counted up the tiles to clear it up in my head. So if I set my projector output to HDMI checkerboard, I'll get something closer to 1080p 60hz 3d?

Closer than 720p 60hz 3D, yeah. Although I don't think checkerboard is an option with our W1070 projector (?).
Yeah, I just tried and the output looked correct, but the projector just displayed it as a checkerboard image - I wasn't able to get it to recognise it as a 3d signal and enable the glasses.

Closer than 720p 60hz 3D, yeah. Although I don't think checkerboard is an option with our W1070 projector (?).
