Oculus Dev Kit 2 Announced and Available for Preorder
1 / 2
- 1080p Panel (100% more pixels than DK1)
- Low Persistence OLED (reduced motion blur / motion sickness - increased contrast)
- Infrared sensors / camera for Z-axis movement
- Built-in latency tester
- 100-degree FOV
- 75Hz refresh rate (vs 60Hz DK1)
- $350
- Shipping in July
Questions
- What happens when you turn 180 degrees and the camera can't see your sensor? Do you only lose z-axis or does it throw off the entire functioning?
- Still no word on release date for consumer version but since CEO said "every part will be improved/replaced for consumer version," Xmas 2014 looks highly unlikely
Thoughts
- The newly-announced Unreal 4 pricing ($9.99/month plus 5% of profits) should be great for Oculus development

Looks very cool, but I'd strongly advise against buying. It's a really cool novelty (and DK2 sounds even more impressive), but the content isn't there yet.

I am close to ordering the DK2 but am on the fence. I love my Asus VG278H lightboost display & am interested in the ROG Swift if it ends up being 3d.
At the same time the Dev Kit 2 really interests me.
So between VIREio, VorpX, & Tridef shouldn't I be able to play enough Oculus Rift games? Im afraid it would be like a busted 3D game where I end up spending more time trying to get the settings right than actually playing.

Nate, you're absolutely right. The existing wrappers aren't there yet in terms of making existing games work well with the rift, and likely never will be. There are two many complications involved in making a VR experience work. Take something as "simple" as Mirror's Edge. It doesn't have headtracking, and no wrapper I'm aware of can implement it - they just use a mouselook emulation for headtracking. Sounds fine, but when you climb a ladder or climb up a ledge you automatically look up in the game - but not in real life - so to look "straight" again, you have to start looking down. It's really cool at first, but unless games are designed for VR, they're not going to be a good experience.
If you're considering buying now, just think about how you'll feel when the consumer release comes out, and is significantly improved. That dev kit will start to look pretty unappealing. Not to mention the fact that games will be targeting the consumer version, so compatibility might not be perfect.
Ultimately it's your money, but I've had a DK1 for a few months (borrowed) and while it's great fun for a while, the novelty wears off quickly once you realise the only truly playable game is Half-Life 2, and a bunch of tech demos/novelty indie games that only hold a very short-term appeal.

TBH, I've mentioned it multiple times. Theres just so much that needs to be done to get a game to work well in Rift via renderer. Like even ignoring getting everything to work shadows, lighting, etc then having it stay working with headtracking.
Games just aren't built for that high FOV even first person games. Your weapons/hands will be very odd compared to enviroment. Then there are other factors especially huds. Like I see vireio trying to do borderlands/fallout. No offense to them but I would be extremely surprised if they got the huds to work. I guess fallout isnt too bad but no vats. Borderlands 1 is pretty friggin hud heavy and will be more of a hassle to play in VR, not lending any immersion.
This isn't even factoring in mouse/headtracking is kind of poor.
I'd say wait for content and don't rely on renderers tbh. When first person games alone are problematic. That rules out alot of content. TBH, I kind of see renderers on Rift going the way of depth buffer/fake 3d.

I contacted nvidia in regards to why it isnt at the momemnt 1440P 3D and they said ..
"Hi
ASUS is building this monitor and we are working with them to update they product specification."
I highly recommend to anyone interested in display trying to contact ASUS via forums/whatever and letting them know you want 1440P3D.

Thanks Pirate & Eqzitara for the elaboration.
I think it will be smarter to wait for the rest of this year to play out as far as me upgrading my display or buying a Oculus. Even though I love my monitor I have had it for almost 3 years & am looking for any excuse to upgrade to something with even more of a wow factor. In my mind I envision playing any game I want with the Rift just like I can with 3d vision or Tridef.
The reality though is the technology just isn't there yet.

Well, I'm not saying "don't". I'm just saying there ant content yet. If theres content by a time your really interested may be worth considering how close to release it is. TBH, I personally was pretty demoralized with content. Games from 10 years ago+ / Unity.
I guess it depends how much $350 is to you. Also keep in mind its NOT really 1080P. Its 1080P/2 per eye, combined with distortion [less screen usage], wide FOV. Games will "appear" at near 720P.
I still kind of want one. But realistically I think I would be happier with that money going towards video card/display but thats me. It would need a real killer "app" for me to be interested till then.

@Daniel
In theory, yes. In practice, you'll be watching it on a sub-1080p screen, and while the experience is cool on the DK1, you couldn't comfortably watch a whole movie that way.

I think I'm gonna order one. 350 is very reasonable and even if I get bored with it I can probably sell it on ebay for at least 200. So losing 150 is acceptable to me to get my VR itch scratched!
Also, I'm sure that a few upcoming games will start to test the waters with official Rift support.
Is it wireless? IMO being wired was the worst flaw of the first one, among its many flaws
There are ways to get it wireless but tbh doesn't sound worth hassle. Battery packs/whatever. Got to worry about length it can stay charged then it will only last so long before needing to replace battery / life decays.
Plus its a lot of weight. Think ghostbusters.
