Issues With 3D Gaming (Advice?) Incredible Performance Drops
Hi All,

i recently purchased an Alienware 2310 and a NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit to prepare myself for 3D gaming in games such as New Vegas and Black Ops, but at the moment I'm having some issues with games in general running in 3D. The main problem is the performance. When i turn on 3D mode, the performance drops significantly, and every single game i have tried stays at around 25-30 fps. I have tried both demanding games and also games that run well on my system, and they still drop to <30fps and makes the game unplayable.

For example, i tried Team Fortress 2, running maxed out, full settings, in 2D its getting around 140fps, and i turn on 3D, and it drops to around 25-30. another game is COD: WAW, normally that's getting 100 fps, but once again when i turn on 3D vision, it drops to 25-30 fps. other games such as Bad Company 2 run at around 50fps and when i turn on 3D Vision it also drops to 25-30fps. Another game, New Vegas, getting 70 FPS normally, and it also drops to 25-30fps.

Is this normal, for all games to drop to this certain range of fps?, games such as tf2 and world at war where im getting +100 fps should run perfectly fine in 3D, but why is the performance drop so significant?

Any advice or tips would be great, I'm also running the latest drivers on my gfx card and 3D vision.

Specs:
Q6600 OC @ 2.8 GHZ
4gb RAM
GTX 460 1GB

cheers

Heh Heh ! Welcome to the world of 3D Vision Gaming !
Yes, it is normal for the fps to go down with 3D Vision gaming.
If you are serious about 3D Vision gaming and really like it, there is only one thing to do..... upgrade your System. Your Prcocessor and RAM seem to be OK, but you DEFINITELY need to go SLI. Pop in 1 more GTX 460, it will make a world of difference.
I was having EXACTLY the same problem as you with a single GTX 480, until I popped in another GTX 480 to go SLI.
TADAAA ! All fps problems solved !
Now, I get more than 60 fps in all my games at high settings even with 3D Vision enabled.
You can try anything else if you want, but ultimately you will HAVE TO go SLI, if you are serious about 3D Vision Gaming at High Settings.

i had the same processor and ram in my old rig but had a GTX280 instead of the 460. It used to run COD MW2 / TF2 fine although at a reduced frame rate (your card is being asked to draw the current frame twice after all) it's all about wether you can accept the frame rate drop. (30fps is playable imo) don't forget film is only 24fps :)

My GTX480 that have now has no issues even running Crysis at reasonable frame rates in 3D and i get an average of 48fps in batman arkham with 3d and physx turned on it plays very smoothly. I do think that some people just get a bit FPS addicted and actually forget that games are more than playable at other speeds than 50gazzillion frames per second . no offense meant :)

Also i see you used the latest drivers but when you upgraded your card did you do a clean install of windows and apply the latest drivers for both card and 3dvision? Your drop from 140fps to 25-30 does seem a tad severe.

I love this quote by the way " If you are serious about 3D Vision gaming and really like it, there is only one thing to do..... upgrade your System. Your Prcocessor and RAM seem to be OK, but you DEFINITELY need to go SLI. Pop in 1 more GTX 460" your not a descendant of marie antoinette are you?

Glad you love it :)
But remember, he's using a 460 not a 480 , so in my opinion, he has no option but to go SLI !
Even I was getting passable fps with a single GTX 480, but fps used to drop quite a bit in graphic intensive areas. So, I thought, "the heck with it", and bought another GTX 480. I 'd been thinking of going SLI anyway, for quite some time !
