Do we still want to play in 3D ?
Thanks to Helix a lot of the best games are very playable or 3d ready , so I'm in no lack of 3d games to play. The worst thing you can do is listen to nvidia ratings, read this forums and check Helix site instead for the games that work well in 3d. However, I agree that Nvidia is doing a great disservice to their own product, they are not pushing the technology at all, even Andrew from Nvidia has been suspiciously missing in action since the forums came back, I fear that we're left alone here and if Helix doesn't get a dx11 wrapper to work, 3d gaming on PC is going to get some tough years ahead.
Or we can make the switch to AMD

3D Gaming is going to die. It's just getting started and if you are keeping an eye on the next generation of stuff coming out everything is going 3D. Including the next Xbox and Playstation. 3D TV's have gotten cheap and then there is this. http://www.oculusvr.com/ Do you think anyone is going to give a crap about gaming on a monitor when they have an HD Virtual Reality thing?

Well, due respect to Palmer, but the Rift must become a selling product first. We're all eagerly awaiting the developer kits right now and those have a resolution of 640x800 per eye. Even with their enthusiastic forecasts they say that a HD version for below 1000,- might be doable within 1-2 years. Still then, HMD based gaming will always be a little geeky and not be mainstream, while playing on 3D TV sets and monitors will be because of the infrasturcture being there to use - you (e.g. nvidia) just needs to flick the switch. Also, this doesn't overcome the need for the Rift being fed with a warp corrected SBS signal. Of course, this can be done right within the engine but there are just a few titles announced. Those I am aware of so far are Doom3BFG (actually released), Miner Wars, Hawken, and Squadron 42/Star Citizen. Everything released so far and the majority of games to come will most presumably NOT be supporting it natively and thus will need - tada - some kind of wrapper. And nvidia's 3Dvision driver could fit that bill perfectly. You gotta bear in mind that SBS, top/bottom, interlaced, colormode for DirectX, OGL and even 3dfx actually that all was present in the driver stack nvidia took over from Metabyte and based the actual solution on. They just decided to "grey out" some features they considered a threat to their busioness for whatever reason. Same goes for the in game tweks, and the abundant rating. All the driver updates have brought was new profiles. The driver team sitting there pre-tweaking the settings for the customer instead of making them accessible again as in the past and have the user tweakt it to their likings. In fact it would reduce work load massively, again increasing their profit. I reassert re-enabling all these features cannot be that much harder than it was to remove them and as elaborated I cannot see any kind of negative effect that should have on their business plan. Quite contrary, bring S3D goodness to everybody should respecctively bring fame and prosperity to nvidia. But as it stands now, it almost seems they want 3D vision fading into oblivion (again)...

Just waitin on M......F........ing HDMI to be in heaven... Even my VG278H just suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks compared to my 46", the iq is ok, but the 46" wins, due to field of view and i like the 3D dimensionality of the larger screen more, i think due to perspective. I've put off playing a few games like Mass Effect 3 until i get a display i feel good about.

Get a projector. Ive bought 2 monitors(including vg278h)/1 hdtvs/ 2 projectors/hmz-t1 . Doesnt even compare. 80" screen thats brighter then any 3D monitor and no ghosting. 3D is all about the "immersion"(term is used way too much), it sucks looking into a little box and seeing double images everywhere. Optoma hd 66/ Acer h5360 are my top picks and extremely cheap(they are identical).

I knew the rift shipping so soon even on kits was too good to be true, still it holds a lot of promise. So yeah, 3d now is a bit on the down side (though we still got lots of good games working in one way or another), still I think the next big step in 3d will be when real glasses free 3d is available with good brightness and viewing angles, and that will take a few years to arrive. Hopefully next gen consoles will support 3d and we get working ports of those games on PC. In any case the topic shouldnt be if we still want to play in 3d, but if we can get to go back to 2d, that would be really hard for me lol

The Occulus Rift seems to be overhyped by the people making it. It's certainly an emmerging technology with some promise, question is though, can it make it in the mainstream market? The sustainability of 3D Vision seems to be dependant on a niche market which makes it more susceptible to extinction. At this point in time, I will continue to use 3D vision and associated hardware for my gaming. Thankfully there are a lot of game titles that work well with 3D Vision and even more so with Helix's 3D wrapper/fixes and the 3D community. The Rift according to me has to go through some major growing pains before it becomes something the gaming market will embrace.

The Rift as hardware, is pretty amazing. The software side of it...yikes. Anywho as of right now, it requires developer support. Getting developers to support 3D alone is a huge issue, now they have to have warp effect, certain resolutions, headtracking, AND 3D. People think that their current television hardware will become irrelevant... It wont even be anyones sole 3D display. I really dont think support via first/third(community) party will extend outside of first person games. Not saying its gonna be bad... I just think alot of people are gonna get a rude awakening. I think the rift will need a HUGE community response.. AND FAST! You know how things are with gamers... What happens when all these people go to play it... and find only two games work? Its like the current situation with DX11 recently(People panicking....lol). Its got no NVIDIA/AMD/TRIDEF(they said they will try) a few modders are interested with it but not sure yet how they will be able to compete. Another problem is people think the developer kit is the actual product... but thats another issue. Im gonna be called a nay sayer or whatever but I am interested in the rift and even pre ordered one. I just dont think people realize its situation. Its a great device and will offer a ton of immersion/experience to games that are compatible.. most games will not be compatible. Not even anywhere near the level of compatibility of 3d vision/tridef.

I hope Oculus makes do-it-yourself kits and provide interface connections for popular 1080p phone displays so we can put two of those together or do a one larger oled using active. Some 2012 3DTV are reviewed to have excess brightness ability in 3D mode. Do you think those projectors are brighter than even that, while shuttering? Nice, if so. Do you think they can be used at a 45 degree vertical angle?

Really too tired to deal with all of this but I've got to ask on some of it...
And even if they do, it's a sad fact that the Topp of the Line 27" monitors (aforementioned Acer and Asus models) cannot live up to the competition in terms of picture quality. It is, frankly speaking ridiculous, that these monitors with latest 3Dvision technology (Lightboost and in case of the Acer even bundled with 3Dvision2 glasses) take the nvidia only framesequential 120 Hz FULL HD signal and convert that down to inferior checkerboard with effectively halfed resolution.
They do WHAT!?!? Is that true?? All in all, though, I don't think any of it is going to make much difference. IF the technology takes off then all this will work itself out - probably via an HDMI that actually has enough bandwidth to do 3D right. If the vast majority of gamers just 'poo poo' it as a gimmick then it will die.

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views ... which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.

So people with AMD get the shaft and have to do side by side. I guess this is what he means *shrug*. I could be wrong but I thought that was the situation.

Zloth, nVidia are supposed to be trying to make S3D more popular, they advertise it on their site often enough, they sell the glasses, and they put the game profiles and ratings together. Its a product marketed by nVidia, and (IMO) they should be doing more to support it. At the moment I'm regretting the money I spent on it purely because most games are released with ratings of Fair or Good, which generally means they are annoying as hell and only borderline playable. If it werent for people in the comunity like Helix this year would have been a MASSIVE bust for S3D, and with more DX11 titles coming out I feel the next year will be a dissaster. Where is the 3D support in games like Far Cry 3, Hitman Absolution and Assassins Creed 3? Why is it that small devs can make games like Trine 2 which is the best looking 3D game so far, and all the big guys either ignore S3D completely, lie to us about the support, or get paid off by ATI (who's 3D userbase is probably smaller than Tridef) and leave nVidia users without any support at all? I've not seen anything from Andrew since the forums came back up, why isnt he letting us know whats going on? Can't someone just come on here just to say "hi guys, we didnt forget about you"? nVidia need to spend some of their marketing budget supporting their product a bit better and showing devs ways of making games more 3D friendly. Its an embarrasment that Helix and co. have turned games like Dishonoured from a horrible mess into something pretty much 3D ready. Why doesnt anyone in nVidia spend time with the DX9 wrapper, or at least put something together that the community can use?

I think Nvidia probably has legal issues at hand for making a hack or DLL wrapper. I think Nvidia is quite happy with the Helix 3D fix thread. Less work for them and it helps them sell their 3D products It also proves games can be fixed. The fault here is the developers. Hardware has always been dependent on the popularity of games available. The trend has been the Console market and that is where the business model of a publisher and developer focus is. 3D Vision has that stigma of gimmick. They don't give a crap since the market share is not impacted by whether a game is 3D Ready or not. The impact is probably negligible in the grand scheme of it all. Let's see what Nvidia does while the Occulus Rift gain some attention. Since the Rift has plans for eventual Console support, this may change the tune of publishers and developers, bigger piece of the pie. I'll still use 3D Vision since there are a ton of games you can play and with the community fixes, that amount has gone up significantly. It'll keep me busy for awhile...3D Vision is the best we got for now in terms of immersion factor. More importantly, 3D support for the games we know and love even if they are 10 years old! The Rift will only work with new games and if you ask me, the quality and complexity of gameplay has died due to porting for the Console and twitch generation....I need a fix...I need a fix....shiver...I need a fix....lol

Libertine, I have always been curious about your 3DTV setup as you sit very close to the TV. In my attempt to move closer to my ASUS 27" I probably won't get any closer than 43cm in a neutral head position. You can't really compare a small screen with a large screen regarding 3D as the amount of image displacement required to get 100% depth is much larger on a small screen. If you take a screenshot with 100% depth it looks identical to a 50% depth screenshot on my screen. Eqzitara, Unless I'm wrong a projector does not work very well in a bright or semi-bright room. I'm really glad that you're happy but isn't it slightly harder to setup than the alternatives.

Related to this, what really surprised me was AC3 having 3d support, in some aspects this is revealing about the state of 3d vision and 3d gaming on PC. I think developers see that investment on 3d in PC games is not worth it. Sales are lower, there's a lot of fragmentation on 3d platforms like amd/3d vision/tridef, many different PC configurations and rampant piracy, besides we 3d users are the minority that will spend lots of money on a proper 3d setup, most people are fine with their budget PCs. Also the terrible support of 3dtv play from Nvidia with new 3dtvs where many of them are not properly supported reduces even more the chance of PC gamers using 3d on their games if you don't have specifically designed TVs/monitors. On the other hand however every new 3dtv sold should work properly from the first day with 3d enabled consoles, which are cheap, widely available and with a lot less piracy. Only Nvidia could change this with 3d ecosystem integration and better 3dtv support, but they are nowhere to be found sadly.

All hail 3d modders DHR, MasterOtaku, Losti, Necropants, Helifax, bo3b, mike_ar69, Flugan, DarkStarSword, 4everAwake, 3d4dd and so many more helping to keep the 3d dream alive, find their 3d fixes at http://helixmod.blogspot.com/ Also check my site for spanish VR and mobile gaming news: www.gamermovil.com
