Hardware test fails on PG278Q (ROG Swift)

Hoping that this was just a defective screen, I ordered a second from a different supplier, it had exactly the same issue. There are other cases where the vertical lines show up as well, not just in 3D mode. I returned both. I have to disagree with these comments, cannot relate to any of these experiences. Thats exactly what we wanted to hear, maan im so eager to get that 3d vision kit right now, even tho I said I was done with 3d gaming ..LOL! Must be crazy good in 1440P and those bezels mmm, best monitor ever and did I say I LOVE G-Sync :D To bad it wont work in 3d tho, but thats another thing :) Thanks again mate!

Alright, so here it is. My first impressions of the PG278Q. Please mind that I had a 17" 1024x1280 BenQ (the FP791) for over 13 years, before I bought this current monitor. So, first off about the physical characteristics: All adjustment options (tilt, swivel, pivot, height) work very nicely. Me being about 6 feet I need the monitor to be raised a little over the desk surface for an ergonomic position. This is no problem. For 3D I tend to raise the screen a bit further, so the centre of the panel is just below the eye-line. No prblem here either. The OSD buttons on the side are ok. I find however the inner ones (cancel and turbo) a tad difficult to hit. The thin bezel is a thing of beauty and you almost get the feeling the display is suspended in the air, especially when viewing full-screen 3D content. Very immersive indeed. The stand is sturdy and serves its purpose well. The red circular LED in the base is a matter of taste. I like it. Those who don't can turn it off easily through the OSD though. Let's move on then to the panel itself. At native resolution - which is 2560 x x1440 - and even at close viewing distance everything looks sharp and crisp. When closing in beyond let's say 2 feet you can sometimes see a little screen door effect. But this depends both on content being displayed and head movement - as I have noticed. But this is rather the exception. My monitor arrived with flawless pixel status - not a single dead, bright or coloured pixel anywhere. PERFECT! One little perk I need to note: the panel looked a bit smudged and dirty when I inspected the pixels. As if someone cleaned it off with a dirty damp cloth. A bit of glass cleaner and a quick wipe settled that issue effortlessly though. The matted surface is excellent as far as I'm concerned. Light is a no-issue - be it from the side, the back, the sun or artificial lighting. Last but not least; uniformity of the panel is good. There is a bit of light bleed on the bottom and the right, being strongest in the lower right-hand corner. That's obviously where the OSD hardware controls are. It's far from being noticeable in normal use and even dark scenes don't get influenced negatively. It's just when there's uniformly dark areas being displayed that you notice. I haven't watched a film with the room darkened yet - but that's where one might notice it. I'd like to doubt though. So - what about colour? I am by no means an expert nor do I have sophisticated colorimetric equipment. Out of the box the colour reproduction looked very good. At 100% the brightness was clearly set to high, though. But after calibration with the Colormunki, things really came to life. To answer a question asked in a comment above: the 8-bit panel is truly a winner. It doesn't match an IPS panel, can't argue with that. But it comes darn close to one. I've got to be honest though - I'm not a big fan of IPS-panels as I am rather sensitive to IPS-glow. What about 3D? Well, now that I got it working fine. It's amazing! Mind you, things don't primarily jump out at you from the screen - the stereo effect goes into the screen mostly. But I think this depends mainly on the material being displayed. I took a look at movie clips, photos and gamed for a while. Conclusion: I will put on those glasses a lot! It's just something you have to experience. I did try shutter stereoscopic glasses before - but that was years ago and boy have things developed. I experience no more crosstalk, ULMB makes the picture bright and the experience is just very immersive. Don't forget though; it all depends on the material! If it isn't programmed or captured properly, even the dream team of PG278Q and nVidia 3D vision 2 can't help you there. For example, GRID Autosport seems to have a problem - at least I experienced it. The game is only displayed on one side (the left eye) and it keeps displaying the last screen of the game's UI permanently on the right eye side. Weird. The games I have tried so far, that work absolutely nice: Crysis 3 and FSX. I will be trying out ArmA 3, CoD Ghosts, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider (of 2013) and rFactor 2 in the coming days. Finally, G-Sync and turbo mode. WOW!! If you haven't got yourself a G-Sync monitor yet. Get the hell out of your chair and buy one! It's a world of difference. Too bad you can't show it on the internet. Once again, you have to experience it yourself. I for my part am not going back from that! As for the turbo modes (100Hz, 120Hz and 144Hz) they work perfectly and make even the Windows experience noticeably smoother! 'nuff said, let's sum it up: The monitor is a no-brainer to buy. It's a tad on the expensive side, I give you that. But which new tech isn't? Then again, you do get a whole lot for it: G-Sync, native 1440p @ 27 inches, up to 144Hz refresh rate, amazing 3D and a whole lot of stylish design. Cheerios everyone.

Awesome! Thanks for the review. It sounds like you are new to 3D Vision itself. If so, be sure to go to the control panel and unlock the 'advanced in game settings' in the Set Keyboard Shortcuts. You absolutely must play with convergence, Ctrl-F5/F6. You have to hold it a long time, like a minute, to get it to affect the image, but it allows you to create popout effects. Next up, the games you mentioned- Only Tomb Raider works properly out of the box. The others are busted in 3D. Go to HelixMod for FarCry3 fix, and a big old bunch of other games. http://helixmod.blogspot.com/ I'm working on a fix for CoD:Ghosts. Here is a list of games voted the best in 3D from people here on the forum: http://lists.bo3b.net/s3d/

Indeed I am new to 3D Vision - so any input is much appreciated. But I only had yesterday to try it out - so haven't explored everything yet. I will try your suggestions when I get back home tonight.

Wonderful review Mr Spicy Zambalolek, thats hot as HELL Btw, one little spoon and your mouth is one fire :D So thanks for that impressive review I have to say and be sure to listen to those guys over here about setting up 3d the correct way (It's a must) with Helix patches, convergence et.c and you are good to go :) I to am in love with this monitor and actually am thinking about getting me an colorymeter, the one you have the colourmunki seems to be praised all around :)

Thanx. The Colormunki is quite good. I used it to calibrate my old monitor, now the new one and the projector too (an Epson TW-9200W - aka 6500UB in the States). It is almost identical to the i1 Display - main difference being it is slower in calibrating (explaining in part the lower price tag). Takes around 5 minutes instead of 2. But that's hardly an issue, since you'll be doing that around once a month if at all. Unless you're an absolute geek - then you'll stick to the recommended once a week.

Ive tried another gold plated display cable and get the same thing. Going to try and plug the power brick directly into the wall.

Tried everything and I'm still getting this odd effect. http://s28.postimg.org/yi62xqkal/20140828_214423.jpg As you can make out there's background lines going through the shapes. In person its about 400% more noticable. -.- Thinking that can be a cable issue.

The lines through the objects seems like sort of normal dithering to me for color effects. It doesn't look any different when I look at my VG248QE screen there. If this were a cable problem, you'd have lines through more than just the triangle and hexagon, you'd get lines in the background as well. If you can see those lines, it suggests that the monitor is set to super low resolution, like 800x600 or something. At 1440p, I would not expect you to be able to see that dither. But I'm not sure how the setup wizard sets the resolution. Does this seem to be a problem when running the nvidia 3D demo at full resolution?

As you can make out there's background lines going through the shapes. In person its about 400% more noticable.

-.- Thinking that can be a cable issue.
I'm not really sure what I'm looking at there in your picture, what you are seeing.

If you look at the blue triangles they are made up of blue, white, blue, white stripes, like a sports shirt. This a full screen 1440p low res camera shot of the demo, and you can still see the differing in person its miles more sharp. 1440p full screen flying demo object. You can notice the black lines, and a good portion of the screen is in view. About 1/3. http://s11.postimg.org/45yzvh2ar/20140826_121125.jpg Ive submitted these pictures to my supplier and they have agreed to test and rma it however its going to take 28 days. :( shame, great monitor without these issues. I have ran discover mode 3d and the triangles on that are solid. :/

OK, I see what you are saying. For the setup wizard, that doesn't look too much different than I see on my screen. Not sure that's an actual problem, so much as the way that image is being drawn. Could easily be that is just NVidia switching into low-res mode to do the test, emphasizing the stripey nature. The reason I wonder is that there is no other artifact on that image. If it were hardware, I would really expect it to happen on the text at the bottom of the image, and especially in the black border through the bottom. Why no vertical lines there? In that image, I can clearly make out the individual pixels, and that blue triangle in particular just looks like a dither pattern to me. 1440p stretched over a 27" screen is not super high resolution, it's only about 110 ppi. The black image there is not as clear to me because of the flash, so I can't see the individual pixels there, but it doesn't seem to far off to me. On the left of the image, the white bar, especially where the left/right overlap- It's all white, no black lines. If it were frequency or hardware, I would not expect that. The black lines in the purple bars does seem fishy, but I don't know what the LCD pixel layout is for this monitor, and that might be the physical layout peeking through. It's just odd that the grey logo behind the purple bar does not have vertical bars. Especially in light of Discover mode not showing lines, that suggests to me that it's not a hardware problem, although it's definitely possible that it only happens in 3D mode. Before sending it back, my recommendation would be to try some experiments with other settings. Try doing 2D mode but at 144Hz, and also especially using ULMB/Motion Blur mode at 120Hz in 2D. That's going to be very similar in frequency to 3D mode. And also try different resolutions to see if anything seems off. Lastly, check for bit-depth. If it were somehow set to 16 bit depth, that would force the computer to dither all this stuff and create artifacts like this. Take a look with monitor calibration images, like smooth color gradients to be sure it's not breaking those into steps like you'd see with lower pixel depth. Good luck.

"The black lines in the purple bars does seem fishy, but I don't know what the LCD pixel layout is for this monitor, and that might be the physical layout peeking through." Those same black lines are actually throughout the whole image on all the other bars as well, it's only because my phones camera is in focus in the centre that the left grey bars are blurred and don't show. In 2d mode (when ctrl+t is pressed) the image is crisp and clear. Everything that is being doubled is creating this effect. "Try doing 2D mode but at 144Hz" I've been using g-sync 144hz a lot and for the most part the screen is really clear of all artifacts but when I turn fast or sometimes when 3d objects turn fast I see a flicker of these same black lines applied going through the face and skin of Lara as the benchmark turns, a couple of ms later and her skin is smooth again, it's bit off putting and draws a lot of attention from my eyes, this would be hard to snap on the camera though because it happens so fast (it's like enjoying a box of juicy blue berries and suddenly biting down on one which has bits of fur growing out of it), I'll try to record it. (maybe see if it happens in shadow view) I have not had the effect out of g-sync so far. There might be something not fully working correctly with the 3d\g-sync module installed or the connection between the two. (this is the feeling in my gut) I'll try some ULMB sometime to see if I get the same effect. Thanks for you help though Bo3b, much appreciated.
