You can test it quite easily, without moving (standing somewhere, don't move your head), look far away, at two separed objects that could have different size (like trees/branch) which are not touching directly the ground (cause it will help your brain, so use your hand to hide the ground if needed), then define which object is closer than the other, if you can't, you don't see 3D this far.
As Helifax said, Mad Max has some nice moments and IMO it's way better than the -really fake- 3D of Avatar..I saw Avatar in 3D cinema and something was missing, I saw it on blu ray,something was missing too, too low 3D and seems like converted not real.
It's not fake, the 3D camera rigs help to set separation (Depth), i think they missed the convergence setting to point the zero object (object with no depth), and they use zoom every where, this is something never to do in 3D, it flattened objects, very bad idea, you have to set correct convergence or move the camera closer, never zoom... I don't say it's easy to do, thought. To prove Avatar was correct, watch (or don't) Pirate of the Caribbean in 3D, even in theater there were no separation, you could watch the movie without glasses ! Converted movies have very good result now, I recall Piranha 3D, OMG, disaster. For good depth in movie go to theaters with big screen, bigger the screen, better the depth. Movies are adjusted to fit maximum depth for the LG IMAX theater of Sydney with 1000m² screen, every smaller screens will lose depth. It helps to step back from the screen, it will stretch the 3D effect, getting more "pop up". At theater, always get the back row ! I wonder if they are just upping the amount of depth, ie, simply increasing the separation.
Depth = separation. .

Here a picture of the end of season 2 of the walking dead, that I did in early 2012. I photoshoped it, then converted it in 3D. About 25 hours of work... Just for the conversion part. You can now see that I know how 3D and conversions works. :) If you have a passif screen and want to use it as a 3D wallpaper, you can use StereoscopicPlayer (Not relevant here, anyway it's a free software, but it stop every 30 min on video mode): Then just screenshot it in full screen in interlaced mode. I would always take realorfake3d.com with a grain of salt, especially since most 3d films will have an extensive amount of conversion done even if shot in stereo. For their list of 2015: 20-30 minutes of The Martian is full conversion. 25 minutes of the Walk is full conversion 100% of Spongebob: Sponge out of water is full conversion. For 2014 about half of their list is wrong so it isn't worth going over. Almost any time you see a film in 3d you can put a good bet that if a shot has practical parts and CG elements composited together it will be converted. Conversion in general can be very good now (not to say there aren't still some terrible 3d conversions...looking at you Goosebumps...). Actually it has gotten to the point that I typically prefer a live action film to be post converted than shot in stereo. Partially because a lot of the films that are being shot aren't being shot very well. Often they have very erratic overal depth, and points of convergence so it can be very uncomfortable to watch. Or to make to make it more comfortable they stick with locked camera settings with a very shallow overall depth (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). What I would love to see more of in the future is mixed conversion and shot so that there is a best of both worlds. -Slow tracking and locked camera shot so that all the stereo detail is preserved -Action and complex camera shots converted so that movements can be exacerbated and each individual object being able to be dynamically placed and controlled.
You can test it quite easily
In the scientific tests im referring to, they actually removed all other possible stereo cues, such as occlusion, shadowing, perspective, atmospheric perspective, size differential, and possibly other cues i can't remember. This was a lab setting, not Beavus and Butthead sitting back on a bench having a beer pulling out a ruler. :D

Yep, there is 3D and 3D, mine is where it is useful, maybe I see 3D up to 250 meters, but 3D is to weak to be useful (the goal is to see the difference of distance between object). I confess I haven't test with a meter though. :)

I think i understand what you mean Dugom. Resolution of the display will probably also make a big difference in the maximum distance a human can perceive depth, especially of static imagery, bringing the distance down quite a bit i would imagine.

Well for those of you that were hoping to get Star Wars: The Force Awakens to watch in 3D at home, you're going to have to wait. Disney in it's infinite wisdom has decided to withhold releasing a 3D version until later this year. Boooo... It is getting a Lego game though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0IJqIzO_YM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPp8FomRJ0o
