Just purchased 3D vision, some general questions also could Acer GD245HQ owners please take a peak i
Hi guys,

It’s my second day as a 3D vision owner and i was wondering if you could help with a few questions?

My System:

Intel Quad Core
8GB of RAM
GTX 295
GT220 for PhyX

I’ve just purchased :
Acer GD245HQ
3D Vision Glasses Pack

I previously owned a couple of 3D capable games (Metro 2033 and BC2) so I jumped straight in to play them. I have some initial questions which may blur the lines of relevance on this board, but this seemed like a good place for general 3D vision stuff and I figure some people on here must have a similar set-up to me. So, here goes :)

-- Questions specifically for people who own the Acer GD245HQ or know a bit about it -–

1. The monitor's manual tells me to run the ‘auto config’ setup in the screen’s menu. The ‘auto’ button doesn’t seem to do anything and the ‘auto config’ bit of the system menu is essentially greyed out. I’m a systems architect with over a decade of experience in computing, ive read the manuals and cant figure this out :) Am i going mad here?

2. Basic visual things like say – internet browsing – look very poor on the GD245HQ . Kind of like a broken CRT.
Games (without 3D vision) look utterly amazing. I cant get my head round how much better 120 Hertz is. I think I’m missing something fundamental regarding set-up because i don’t think the monitor is faulty. Is there any way to make text and non-game stuff less... fuzzy?

-- General 3D vision questions –-

So, my first experience with 3D vision was Metro 2033 and.. wow... the prologue level is utterly amazing. So immersive. My second was BC2 and I was less impressed. So I wonder what the difference is...
For both of these games I didn’t tweak the setup, i just dived straight in. So I have a couple of questions:

- I’ve heard people talk about 3D vision profiles but i cant seem to see these in the control panel.
Is the fact that Metro 2033 looks much better, more ‘3D’ than BC2, a consequence of the game design, or can I play around with the settings somewhat? The thick manuals that came with 3D vision seem more hyperbole that instructional. Is there a decent tweaking\config primer somewhere?

- With the system mentioned att the top of this post I can play vanilla Metro 2033 at the highest detail setting. With 3D is become unplayable in terms of frame rate. Is this just the way it is or again, am I missing something fundamental about set-up?

Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the 3D Vision world !!
Err... too many questions and I don't want to waste time posting when I could be 3D Vision Gamin' /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .
I'll just answer a couple... leave the rest for the other Pr0s..
Yes, you can play around with the settings. I increase the Convergence until things are literally popping out of the screen !
Yes, fps takes a BIG hit with 3D Vision gaming. You've got to have a pretty hefty System to get good fps with 3D Vision enabled.
I myself went SLI GTX 480 from a single GTX 480 just to get playable FPS. Its possible to play in 3D Vision with single gfx card, but you won't have a good experience until you go SLI.... and that's a FACT !
Sorry, but your present System simply isn't upto snuff !
Why's your 2D internet browsing so bad ? Looks like your Acer monitor isn't OK. A lot of people are complaining about the Acer on this Forum. I never had problems with the monitor in my signature from Day 1. Seems like you got a dud monitor... exchange it for a Samsung or Asus or Benq... all three are good.
More later.

Welcome mrrorschach,

I am also new to 3D gaming and to this forum. I was pulling my hair out for a few days after I got the Acer GD245HQ. Finally, I accepted that it only does one thing well, gaming at 1920x1080-120Hz. forget about using it as an all-purpose monitor. The controls are terrible. Do the best you can with the controls.

I actually built the cheap gaming rig in my sig because I refused to use the GD245HQ for 2D desktop stuff. I converted my old pc (Intel q6600) and old 60Hz monitor, into my 2D work pc which I now use for everything except gaming.

Try to overclock your cpu, gpu, ram, and bus. Dont forget about the bus speed. A slow bus speed can limit almost everything else. Try with GT220 and without and verify that there is an improvement in frame rate.

3D looks nice even at less than ultra high detail. It's ok to reduce detail and special effects. Try to keep frame rate at or above 60fps.

Try older games too. I had fun re-playing old games which I never would have replayed in 2D.

To see truly amazing 3D, enable advanced settings in the nvidia control panel.

"Set Keyboard Shortcuts" --> "Enable advanced in-game settings"
and adjust the convergence in game, in addition to the depth (dial-controlled). Try 50% depth and then play with the convergence and depth. Wow! Amazing!

Wow! Amazing!

Is there any way to make text and non-game stuff less... fuzzy?

What resolution are you at? It sounds like you don't have the screen at native resolution.
Different games have different reactions to Stereo 3D. Some work great, some kinda work, some don't work at all. You don't say why you were less impressed so it's hard to say what the problem is in this particular case.
I don't think you can see each game's profile in detail. However, if you change settings for a game yourself, you can save those settings and have them stick so they are used next time you play the game. Those seem to get saved in your documents folder under NVStereoscopic3D.LOG

And yeah, the instructions tell you how to charge the glasses and that's pretty much it. The best way to figure out what the settings do is to simply change them. You'll need to go in to the control panel and punch the keyboard shortcuts button and you'll see what you can do. Note that sometimes convergence will not affect a game at all so, if nothing happens, don't be surprised.

(One thing that is not listed on the shortcuts for reasons not meant to be understood by us simple mortals... there is also a screenshot hotkey. Press alt-F1 while playing and the game will save a .JPS file screenshot in your documents folder under NVStereoscopic3D.IMG.)

- With the system mentioned att the top of this post I can play vanilla Metro 2033 at the highest detail setting. With 3D is become unplayable in terms of frame rate. Is this just the way it is or again, am I missing something fundamental about set-up?

One person's "unplayable" framerate is another person's "that's so smooth, I bet I could get away with more shiney!" What framerate are you getting?
