It's not very likely that SLI 970 doesn't work at all. And, there are quite a few people in this forum that have upgraded recently to 970 SLI, and if 3D Vision were broken across the board, we would have heard about it.

@VultureX: Since you are getting stuttering in the 3D Vision test, that suggests something is definitely wrong with your setup. That's a pretty simple test app, and a good test point for making sure things are working.

It doesn't have to be something wrong with the card though- it could be bad driver install, missing/corrupted motherboard drivers, all kinds of stuff.
My best guess would be that your driver install is somehow borked. I'd suggest doing a safe-mode uninstall of the driver, and do a clean install. Make sure to delete the cached NVidia driver folder, it's been known to propagate damaged drivers on multiple installs.

OK, this sounds like a good idea. Just to get things straight:
By Single card you mean that in the control panel, the SLI configuration is set to Disable SLI.
By SLI cards you mean that in the control panel, the SLI configuration is set to Maximize 3D performance.
By Stereo disabled/enabled, you mean that in the control panel, Enable stereoscopic 3D is unchecked/checked.
By toggled off you mean that you start the game with Stereo enabled, but use the keyboard shortcut to turn off stereoscopic 3D effects.
Another important thing when benchmarking:
Make sure that in Manage 3D settings in the control panel, Vertical sync is set to 'Use the 3D application setting'.
Make sure that in-game any vSync setting is turned off.

RAGEdemon has noted that it is working for him, so clearly it is not 100% broken.
@VultureX: Since you are getting stuttering in the 3D Vision test, that suggests something is definitely wrong with your setup. That's a pretty simple test app, and a good test point for making sure things are working.
Based on your experiments and your information, I still think your first MSI card is somehow busted. Try your 2nd MSI with your EVGA if you still have it.
It doesn't have to be something wrong with the card though- it could be bad driver install, missing/corrupted motherboard drivers, all kinds of stuff.
My best guess would be that your driver install is somehow borked. I'd suggest doing a safe-mode uninstall of the driver, and do a clean install. Make sure to delete the cached NVidia driver folder, it's been known to propagate damaged drivers on multiple installs.

You may not have proper chipset drivers installed etc, not just graphics drivers. Even windows might itself have been corrupted. You did apply that obscure patch after-all.
As bo3b says, we need to rule out a software issue before being able to isolate this problem.

I had also another issue: my screen was flickering in 4k 60Hz mode. I fixed this last issue by doing a clean install of Windows 8.1 X64 (before i was on Windows 7 X64). But the stereo 3D SLI issue wasn't fixed. So it's probably not a windows problem.
By the way my motherboard is an Asus p8Z77-V and i'm using the lastest drivers 344.60.
I was under the impression that "stereo disabled" meant "toggled off", not disabled completely in the control panel. I'll do more tests tonight...
joserm, VultureX, Kaendd, we should agree on a few games to try. My system will act as the control for this experiment. Let's see exactly what changes in our respective systems which triggers this bug.
It is interesting that 2 people who have this problem were using different branded cards (which in theory should have worked).

I made a quick test and here's my results:
With SLI turned on and Stereo 3D turned off on Nvidia control panel i got:
Average framerate: 125.09 fps
Minimum framerate: 104.09 fps
Maximum framerate: 153,90 fps
and with SLI turned on and Stereo 3D turned on on Nvidia control panel:
Average framerate: 77.78 fps
Minimum framerate: 65.55 fps
Maximum framerate: 95,24 fps
Both tests have been done with Stereo 3D turned off in game (with Control+T) because i'm currently using my monitor which is not Stereo 3D capable.
The test has been done with max settings with 8X AA at 2560x1600 resolution.
By the way before i had a SLI of GTX 780 and i suspect i was having the same problem. I've never made any test with the 780, but i remember i had bad framerate in NFS Shift 2 at 4k when Stereo 3D was enabled in nv control panel and disabled in game. But when i disabled it nv control panel the game was smooth. Back then i thought it was an issue only with this game but maybe i was wrong.
I don't see any performance degradation like said above. Keep in mind that there is some driver overhead and just by activating 3D Vision you lose around 5-10% fps in games even with 3D Vision turned off (CTRL+T).

OK, this sounds like a good idea. Just to get things straight:
By Single card you mean that in the control panel, the SLI configuration is set to Disable SLI.
By SLI cards you mean that in the control panel, the SLI configuration is set to Maximize 3D performance.
By Stereo disabled/enabled, you mean that in the control panel, Enable stereoscopic 3D is unchecked/checked.
By toggled off you mean that you start the game with Stereo enabled, but use the keyboard shortcut to turn off stereoscopic 3D effects.
Another important thing when benchmarking:
Make sure that in Manage 3D settings in the control panel, Vertical sync is set to 'Use the 3D application setting'.
Make sure that in-game any vSync setting is turned off.
Here are my results for the GRID2 benchmark (comparable with GRID autosport). I'm using driver version 344.60 (clean install using Display Driver Uninstaller tool). All the advanced graphics settings are maxed out, 4xMSAA @ 1440p. I'm using two MSI 970GTX Gaming cards.

Notice that there is a performance hit with Stereo enabled but toggled off versus Stereo disabled.
Notice that SLI performance is worse than its counter part in Single card, in both toggled off and toggled on. The interesting thing to observe here is that both cards were having almost full 100% usage all the time in SLI.
Everything is maxed out @ 1440p, except 2 x SSAA.

I'm also using the Steam overlay and MSI Afterburner overlay to measure fps, but I've disabled those and the results are the same, so that can't be it either.
Besides this, Lara's hair also flickers sometimes in SLI with Stereo disabled.

Results remain consistent. SLI is not kicking in when Stereo is enabled and produces worse results than Single card, while both cards are working at 100%.
In some games the SLI rendering is also different from the single card rendering. These games seem to render the same whether or not you're using SLI. But as I've pointed out earlier SLI can also break the 3D rendering in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. In this game everything seems okay until you move the mouse in the menu or see a moving Lara or enemies in game.
In conclusion: SLI + 3D on the 9 series is completely broken for me. On the same system using 670GTX SLI I had none of these issues. (Perhaps the performance issue in GRID2, but I can't tell anymore)
