PS3 3D game and 3D VISION 2
  1 / 3
So my cousin moved and donated his slim ps3 to me. I remember that 3D was the big thing for PS3 back in the day. Does anyone know what kinda set-up I need to play 3D PS3 game? Can it be played on PG278QR or PG258Q?

You need 3D capable display (like 3D TV), not just 3D ready (requires additional hardware/software unlikely to be recognized by PS3). I suggest getting the best LG passive 4K 3D TV you afford/find - since all 3D TV production has stopped. With something like OLED 55E6 or 55C6, you could also migrate to state of the art PC gaming, with the incredible helixmod.blogspot library. Uncharted 3 is probably PS3’s best 3D game (you will find 3D library is fairly small) - I suggest starting with this...

3D is very weak on PS3, if you want great 3D, do this setting (French translation): https://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.hardware.fr%2Fhfr%2FJeuxVideo%2FConsoles%2Freglages-ameliorer-relief-sujet_176408_1.htm%23t9762838&edit-text=&act=url
If it's any consolation, 3D is possible with the RPCS3 emulator using the OpenGL wrapper. But certain shaders have to not be stereoized, I imagine every game will need a different fix, you'll get half the fps per eye... and if it's like Dolphin, different emulator build and GPU drivers will make the shaders change.

LG OLED 55E6 or 55C6? what's the difference besides one being curve and one not curve? Do I need to buy a proprietary 3D glass for the ps3? since these 2 models are about $2k each, how good are they when it comes to pairing with 3D Vision 2? Bascially, I want to know how good would this $2,000 investment going to be or I would be better off with something else?

It could be the only way to play Red Dead Redemption in 3D!!! But for the moment RDR is not playable with RPCS3, it's a WIP

For LG passive 3DTV you need RealD glasses or LG Cinema glasses: http://www.3dmovielist.com/3dglasses.html 3DVision glasses wont be usefull with LG 3DTV. For movies the larger is the screen the bigger the 3D will be. To get the maximum popup, get as far as possible of the screen. In gaming, 3D is adjustable the goal is 100% which is 6cm of separation, all 3D hardware will give you the same 3D effect. But the quality of the hardware will render it more enjoyable and realistic. Be carefull 4k gaming with 3D is quite impossible to achieve in high settings. Maybe with Volta or Ampere chips someday... Passive 3DTV hardware will always delete half the lignes. Passive is twice blurry compare to an active 3D screen. (except projector with active shutter like theater or double passive projectors). Sorry for my english.

With single overclocked Pascal Titan X, I use 4K resolution for all my games now. For example, I just finished The Surge (great mod by Helifax), where the game maintained a consistent 30 fps - note that 1080Ti has similar performance. 2 3D glasses are provided with each of these TVs, so you simply need a HDMI cable to connect to the PS3 (plug and play). When you want to migrate to PC gaming, you will need a better/faster 4K certified HDMI cable, and you may want to upgrade your graphics card (and CPU?). The screen curvature is a matter of personal preference - I have 65 and 55 E6 flat screen versions. By the way, the OLED display provides superb blacks (and excellent color), and the interlaced FPR provides low 3D ghosting. I remain very pleased with these displays. Unlike some prior models, the 65 in screen appears to offer a slightly larger 3D FOV relative to the 55 in version (FPR supports a closer minimum 3D viewing distance, when scaled for relative display size).

Minimum game FPS for acceptable “smooth” motion is another area of personal preference. For me, I can adapt to as low as 20 fps in most games, as long as display lag is low and game resolution is high (like 4K) - although 30 fps or more is preferred...

There are some really good 3D games on PS3. I was playing PS3 in 3D on a projector before and now on a 4k LG OLED and it works great. The OLED came with passive glasses and all you need to do is hookup the PS3 and configure video settings. Since the PS3 only does 720p 3D in games, you don't lose half of the lines in the picture on a 4k display. Be sure to set your screen size on PS3 to 10 inches for the 3D effect to be good. The only really bad games in 3D with the 10 inch setting are ones that don't use geometry/real 3D. Here's a list of good/bad games that I've tried. Good: Shadow of the Colossus Ico Uncharted 3 Jak and Daxter trilogy Sly Cooper Trilogy Sly Cooper Thieves in Time Prince of Persia trilogy God of War Chains of Olympus/Ghost of Sparta Puppeteer Assassin's Creed Revelations - I think this was better than AC3 Call of Duty Black Ops/2 - maybe using fake 3D but it's not terrible Bad: Ratchet and Clank trilogy Assassin's Creed 3 Ghost Recon Future Soldier Gran Turismo 5 - couldn't get good settings and you can't adjust in game Here is a list of most games that support 3D, but it doesn't say if it's real 3D or not: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games_with_3D_support

It also works with PS4 Pro, and seems to improve 3D depth in Blu-ray playback a little, also. Interesting that Xbox One does not offer this type of 3D screen size adjustment.
@OneUp: which LG OLED do you use/recommend?
I'm using the OLED65E6P model. From reading the posts about 4k+3D on this forum, the 2016 generation of OLEDs have great 3D and better millisecond display delay than 2015 generation. Some have said the 65 model has a smaller sweetspot for 3D vs the 55. In my experience the vertical sweetspot is tricky to get right, but getting in the right position for horizontal is easy. The other models which should work just as well are OLED55E6P, OLED55C6P, and OLED65C6P. The curve ones should work just fine, but I didn't want to get a curved TV.
