Once you play the Doom 3 BFG Vive mod and the new serious sam VR the first hope (that both use trackpad locomotion on the vive controller for movement) you wouldn't give two shits about 3D gaming!
It's in a different universe to flat screen gaming, never mind a different league.
Shooting the plasma rifle (which shoots blue glowing orbs) through a dark room and seeing the walls and monsters being illuminated as it moves is a sight to behold.
Maybe i'm lucky as I don't get motion sickness but holy shit, this is where it's at!
I've had my vive 6 months now and it still blows me away everytime I use it!
Can't wait for the AMD announcement. Especially now this USB 3.1 has VRR which will be built into TV's and projectors etc!

I know it is not comparable but the first thing I tried with Oculus DK was Doom 3 BFG and OMG that was horrific for me. While turning around was acceptable, going down some stairs was sickening. I couldn't do it more that few minutes.
I tried the same thing now on VR headset with very low fov (60) and was still getting sick in some games.

I think everybody that plays in 3D is very excited with VR and understand that adding the movement tracking will improve immersion but what you said doesn't make much sense:
"It's in a different universe to flat screen gaming, never mind a different league."
Well, 3D is not a "flat screen", thast why everybody here loves it!
"Shooting the plasma rifle (which shoots blue glowing orbs) through a dark room and seeing the walls and monsters being illuminated as it moves is a sight to behold."
I guess 3D Vision players knows this feeling for years, we all see the depth and in this case as you mentioned monsters being illuminated as the plasma moves in a dark room. This is what 3D does with games adding the amazing depth, VR only adds the movement tracking to it!
The movements tracking and the controllers add a lot to the immersion, but only for specific games as it also has some drawbacks compared to 3D Vision, more motion sickness, lost of comfort wearing a headset, your eyes suffer a lot more, it has a much worse resolution, lose the smoothness on gameplay and reflex of a keyboard and mouse, not very attractive for people that don't like to move or if you are just not in the mood to move at all after a tired day at work, etc...
However, the immersion on some games added by the motion tracking does make a very nice experience, but nothing that will make a hell of an impression on 3D Vision users... It is certainly really impressive for the first timers in 3D gaming though...

Yeah, my friend can't play Doom on his Vive (or onward that uses the same trackpad locomotion) as he feels sick.
Maybe I've built up my VR legs playing gamers like hover junkers and dirt in VR, but honestly Doom 3BFG with the HD texture pack and vive mod is easily the best gaming experience I have ever had.
The new Serious Sam VR the first hope even has full on multiplayer.
Someone should make a VR locomotion training app that lets people get used to various locomotion methods and helps them build up a tolerance to it like fighter pilots have to in order to get used to pulling massive G's.
To anyone that doesn't get motion sickness though get Dooom 3 BFG!
It's a new level compared to teleport locomotion game like Arizona sunshine and raw data.

It adds far more than that to be fair. You are in the Doom world. INSIDE it. its not just movement tracking.

I disagree with this. Wearing the headset makes me feel like i'm wearing the doom helmet. It adds to immersion in a way. Your eyes don't suffer more as you have zero crosstalk and everything works in stereoscopic 3D out of the box, perfectly. Not approximated fixes etc. 3D ready!
I agree with the resolution but this is Gen 1.
You don't lose the smoothness of gameplay. I turn off both reprojection methods and crank the AA up and there are no jaggies at all. It couldn't be any smoother and is the best looking game I've tried yet in VR.
As for reflexes. You are aiming a gun like in real life. You can turn your head to look whilst shooting in a different direction, then you add the torch into the mix and it's something else.
In serious sam you can make strafing movement follow you head direction so you can 'circle strafe' enemies. It's truly amazing.
In doiom and Serious Sam I don't tend to walk around at all. Maybe pivot a bit but you move with the trackpad so much faster than you can move your legs its kind of pointless walking around without the trackpad. Good when taking cover behind walls though!

I love 3D gaming, but IMO it doesn't even come close to VR. Like you say when VR headsets get a higher resolution screen, it'll be the best way to play 3D vision games too. (in a theatre mode with no cross talk, better colour accuracy and deeper blacks due to OLED screens)

VR is fantastic, but lacks at the moment software. The Doom BFG Mod however is exactly what I want to see more. 3D vision is still a great option for me, since I am sometimes just too lazy stand up for playing and like to chill on my chair. I even still play a lot of games in 2D like CoD Multiplayer, or other competitive shooter. I think at the moment there is a market for 2D, 3D and VR. The biggest problem I see in new technologies are those fanboy casual gamer, that still stick to Counter Strike or Dota and if you tell them that 3D vision or VR is amazing, they just don't understand it, they are to narrow-minded, just see what they know and can't look ahead. But this is a general problem wie have in society. I am just a bit puzzled that so many gamers are also like this. Often you hear sentences like, graphic doesn't matter... blabla. ;D

Motion sick propably has nothing to do with practice. My wife gets seasick every time we drive a road with lots of curves.
It's an inner ear thing and can't be improved but only to certain point with better hardware.
FOV in vive and oculus is puke. Atleast i feel claustrofobic with so small Fov. And the headset is not at all comfotable if compared to regular 3D glasses.
Gpu power required for the great AA titles THAT DO NOT EXISTS is a lot more.
Bottomline currently atleast 3D vision still rules in overal performance. In overal performance,
Comfort, gameplay, money wise. Atleast with projectors the image is Huge and imersive, atleast enough.
I don't get htc's and Facebooks strategy to launch crappy and expensive devices to a handfull of potentiaalia users,
The ones that pay 1000 bucks for a hdm to transform into a virtual reality would pay 2k for premium headset and buy the
Multi gpu setup to go with it. Atleast I would gladly pay 2k for something great that 1k for mediocre crap

You can feel very immersed as well even in 2D with a game or movie, and feel like you are experiencing that if you are immersed while watching or playing. The immersion is higher with VR obviously but it is just 3D with motion tracking and if the motion tracking is not appealing enough for a specific game you might as well immerse yourself in 3D without VR. For 3D Vision players all VR adds is the motion tracking.

I cant consider the headset as an item that improves the immersion in a sort of good way, coz otherwise I would just wear any headset or helmet while playing games to feel more immersed. It makes you unconfortable after hours, thats the reality, but well thats the only way for now to experience VR and yes a screen a few inches from your face cannot be any better for your eyes than a TV or projector.
In terms of reflex and gameplay, you cannot move your neck as fast as you move your mouse, you will break your neck, yes definitely is a lot more cool to move your head but if all you want is just enjoy a fluid gameplay, less sort of frustration to achieve the reflex and movements that can be necessary in some games the mouse and keyboard is the way. After a while you get used to the VR controls, but it is not as smooth as a mouse and keyboard. VR make games look like reality with our body movements, but cannot forget that games are sometimes fun because they are not real, thats why you can do stuff in the game that your body cannot do physically, like be real fast, etc.
Anyway I love the idea of VR as well and I am putting all my hope that it will allow us to continue to play in 3D in the future, hoping that 3D will never end!

My experience has been different.
I've found the Vive to have the superior image quality. The god-rays are much less noticeable, and I also do not notice the screen door nearly as much. Possibly because I'm moving around all the time.
The Rift is initially more comfortable and a nice fit when I put it on, but for anything over about an hour, I find the Rift face seal to be itchy, digging into my forehead, and not comfortable, whereas on the Vive I never notice.

It makes more sense if you use the words that the developers use to describe the experience. There is immersion, which we get from 3D Vision. Then there is presence, which you can only get from VR.
Immersion can be had in a lot of experiences, even reading a great novel. You lose track of the real world, and are fully immersed in your novel/game world. I easily get this with 3D Vision, especially on projector. I'm usually fully engaged, and 3D helps a lot with that.
To be fair, there are some 2D games that can fully immerse you as well, where you lose track of the real world and time, and everything else. I can no longer play Civ5, because it's always 6 am when I emerge. As a general rule, I find it's much easier to achieve immersion with 3D Vision gaming.
VR however has presence, which is the feeling that you have transported to another world, not just immersed. This is its goal. And with Gen1 stuff, it doesn't always happen. But when it does, I have to agree that it is a higher level of gaming. More demanding as well, I typically need to be standing and moving for it to work. I don't get presence when I'm sitting, unless it's driving a car.
In my opinion, VR will not replace all gaming, simply because it is more demanding. And a lot of the time, I just want to veg out.

Actually this is common misperception. The screen is physically only a few inches away, but optically, it is at a minimum of 2 meters (rift), or infinite (vive). 2 meters is projector distance, about 6 feet.
The lenses in the headsets move the apparent screen to distance, so it's actually much easier on your eyes than using a monitor up close.

Predator is more my style but I see a flaw. The keyboard should have been easily replaceable like the numpad. That means grime is gonna get collected all up in that keypad and is going to put the entire system in jeopardy.
also, I love that everything was easily in reach without having to remove something else to get to it. glasses free 3d would have been awesome :P
Can't tell if processor or gpu can be upgraded tho... uh ooooh.

For a lot of people i think it has to do with practice, us who are old enough to remember when 3D games were new (Wolfenstein etc) also remembers how many people complained about those "terrible 3D games" that was impossible to play due to the motion sickness you would get from playing them..
So yeah, its expected to see a few people complaining about it in VR, and it's sad to see that developers are listening to this whiny group and removing walking alltogether in favor for teleportation, which obviously has no place in games who wants to have state of the art immersion.
I think it's a relatively small, but loud group, some which should just face the fact that VR is not for them. If you are a person who is overly sensitive to motion sicknes i think its even idiotic to believe VR is probably something for you, it's not.
I have to say i thought playing with the stick in VR was awful at first, felt like i was going to fall on my ass (Doom 3, Windlands). But it has really improved to the point that i have no problem with it, though it really, really helps to sit down, and we will end up sitting down playing VR anyways, apart from a few games. I can not see myself playing standing up for e.g an hour, my feet hurts after 10 minutes :P

Wow, that Acer Predator is indeed the first laptop I've ever drooled over. Probably because it's not very laptop-ish ;)

Well, technically it is! It is a 3D image with motion tracking. You are not inside the Doom world! hehehe
