Low FPS on HL² with 3d vision don't understand why...

*UPDATE:
See link below for fps EXCEEDING 60fps in 3d stereo mode in LOTRO. Please note that this screenshot was taken by the in-game PrtScrn function which apparently takes a normal 2d screenshot even in 3d mode. My 3d stereo screenshot function crashes my game, not sure why. I assure you, this WAS taken in stereo mode.
Note the fps in the very top left hand corner. My G15 keyboard display showed the same fps.
I have no explanation how the fps get this high in stereo mode, but I have found that at certain areas throughout lotro it does. Most of the time it stays between 40 and 60 fps in stereo mode, but there are in fact times when it goes much much higher, apparently unhindered by the 3dV drivers. And it does so without tearing, flickering, or otherwise showing any sign of error. As a matter of fact, the graphics are incredibly smooth at frame rates above 100. This was taken in Rivendell by Aragorn's guest house, I've also gotten similar fps in Filikul and certain areas of Foundations of Stone.
Perhaps it's a "bug" since there are no official 3dV driver settings for LOTRO. Just so y'all know I wasn't losing my mind. ;)

I did get about 180FPS in Assasin's Creed in S3D a few days ago, however when I disabled it it dropped to 120FPS. this was only after enabling and disabling the the S3D a few times. I think this was a glitch in the toll I was using ( i think it just displayed the total frames beign procuded by the Vid card per second and not the frames per eye. so even though 100+ frames got rendered per second, they were in pairs maiking it 50+ unique pairs)
However with the Samsung monitor and system anything above 60frames per second per eye would be a waste of time, computing power and actual power for me. After all that's all that can be displayed in S3D in regular 2D with a 120hz monitor then I can understand 120FPS. But if you arep laying on a standard 60hz monitor and your vid card is pumping out 100framers in a second..
only 60 of those frames ever reach your eyes. 40 are loss, I guess becasue at a 100fps each frame is only 1/100 th of a second apart compared to at 60fps where each frame is 1/60 th os a second apart it may seem smother in some cases, but may be skipping at certain parts.
the FPS is nice but it all comes down to the equipment and technology you are using. For me give me 60FPs per second constantly in 3D with my current setup any time and I would be 120% satisfied. Anything above 30fps per second per eye in #D just l;eaves me 100% satisfied, afterall conventional movies were shot at 24fps, and we never tend to have a problem with that.

Yeah, I agree it's most likely a driver/game "glitch" as these exceedingly high fps are the exception and not the norm. I just wanted to confirm that it does happen (you all had me thinking I was losing my mind! lol I was SO sure I had seen this before. haha)
Ironically, I struggle with my settings most of the time trying to maintain ~60fps as LOTRO seems to want to run at 40fps most of the time. Then I get these huge spikes in certain areas (usually instances, I've noticed) that just go off the chart. I'm not sure I agree with 60 being the ceiling for perfect performance, but a constant 60fps in stereo mode at max visual settings is certainly the "holy grail". I agree that anything above 120 would seem unnecessary.

May not be perfect cieling. it's just that currently that's the most that a 120hz monitor can do in stereo. of course If i had a 240hz monitor i'd want 120fps per second... to a point. I'm not sure what the point is where I can't discenr the difference between one fps over the other. at osme point fps is nothign more than bragging rights..
for instacne how does it benifit me that my video card can do 1000fps when I can only tell the difference up to let's say 200fps (just arbituary numbers)
At some point.
I need to check to see at what fps limit I can't discenr the difference. then i'll base everythign else off of that.
So for me 60fps may be fluent, for others they may need more or less. So it's back to a personal poitn of view.
I have a GTX285, and also have some severe frame drop in some scenes.
When I enter Ravenholm and I'm in the sector with the building and the fire infront, my FPS drops to below 10.
Other source games like Team fortress 2 or Left4Dead work flawless.
Perhaps HL2 is too old to work good with the glasses?
I have the same problem as Rocker_lx. My system has GTX285 in SLI, with an 860 CPU at 3GHz.
I'm playing Half Life 2 Episode One, just for the s3d experience. It's awesome and compelling game play, except for the frame rate collapse.
In the reactor core early in the game, when I look down on the giant reactor orb, the framerate drops to 8. 8!
With 285 in SLI? With s3d turned off (ctrl-t), but not disabled, that same scene pulls 120 FPS. Not using the Nvidia laser sight.
Playing around with the graphics settings demonstrates absolutely no difference for any setting, including Antialiasing all up or all off. It does not appear to have anything to do with the video cards or SLI setup.
I thought it might be CPU related, but if I overclock to 3.8, there is also no difference in that scene.

We have a winner!
I went back to double check the laser sight. Even though it's not showing during the game, or doing anything useful, it was still enabled.
Disabling the laser sight in the NVidia stereoscopic control panel fixed the problem. Now in the same test scene, I get a full 60 FPS for each eye, 120 FPS total, with all visual settings at max. Smooth!
Now that is a brutal FPS hit, more than 10x worse when enabled.

In my opinion, this is the best FPS on the PC, and therefore the world.
For some reason nVidia 3D sight cripples this game. To completely remove the crosshair you have to download a texture that makes the brackets, which remain (dispite removing the crosshair from the config), invisible. Found here
edit--------------------
I forgot to say, make sure you make sure nVidia's crosshair is disabled even with the HL crosshair off because it still affects the game even though you cant see it. :o

I agree that anything above 120 would seem unnecessary.

for instacne how does it benifit me that my video card can do 1000fps when I can only tell the difference up to let's say 200fps (just arbituary numbers)
At some point.
I need to check to see at what fps limit I can't discenr the difference. then i'll base everythign else off of that.
So for me 60fps may be fluent, for others they may need more or less. So it's back to a personal poitn of view.

I'll experiment more, but any suggestions?

We have a winner!
I went back to double check the laser sight. Even though it's not showing during the game, or doing anything useful, it was still enabled.
Disabling the laser sight in the NVidia stereoscopic control panel fixed the problem. Now in the same test scene, I get a full 60 FPS for each eye, 120 FPS total, with all visual settings at max. Smooth!
Now that is a brutal FPS hit, more than 10x worse when enabled.
Many thanks for the suggestion.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
