I decided yesterday to try out 3D Vision. My PC is already equipped to do it (2x 480GTX in SLI) so I just needed a display. So I ordered a monitor and a projector /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':biggrin:' />

I should receive both before the weekend and wanted to make sure that I can use them both in 3D immediately. This shouldn't be a problem with the ASUS VG278H because it ships with its own glasses.
What I am wondering about is: can I use these glasses also with the Benq W700? This projector does not come with any glasses at all. As far as I have understood I would normally need the nVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision 2 Wireless Kit which would provide me with an IR-transmitter and glasses (IR-receiver). I wouldnt want wired glasses for the projector so I am just interested in the wireless versions.
However I will already have the glasses from the monitor and the monitor itself should include an IR-transmitter already. Since the ASUS VG278H is in the same room as the Benq W700, will it be possible for me to use the IR-transmitter of the monitor while I watch videos (or games) on the projector? I believe it will work since the USB part of the monitor should keep working even when it deactivates the monitor to display the image only in the projector. I have a similar setup: 2500K, 2 x 570 in sli, 21 inch CRT, Benq W700. Please let me now what you think of the Benq, i can tell you I am very happy with it.

I want to post my experiences now that I had almost two days of trying out my new equipment. Maybe it helps somebody. First the two most important things:

Answering my original question in more detail: the ASUS VG278H does not have any USB connection to the PC whatsoever - it only gets signals via DVI. If I had known this before it would have been clear to me that the IR transmitter can never be used for any other device than the monitor itself. When no picture is shown on the monitor there is no way for the IR-transmitter inside to know of any 3D activity.
The nVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision 2 Wireless Kit (which I managed to buy on Saturday in a local shop) on the other hand is attached via USB and is therefore operating independently in order to be used with different devices. So unfortunately I had to buy two transmitters in the end: one built into the monitor and one separate transmitter. But at least I have two glasses now to watch movies together with someone else /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbup:' /> .
Some more random thoughts and suggestions:

[*]I like the 3D effect more when I see it on the monitor. The projector is not bad but the picture looks like it has less depth (even when I increased the respective slider in the NVidia control panel). However 3D movies and games still look nice on both devices!
[*]One thing to keep in mind: don't forget to adjust the resolution when playing on a projector. My games were configured to 1920x1080. The Projector still displayed the picture but there was a big red warning across the screen that I was trying to play in 3D on an unsupported device. It took me 20mins to find out that I had to adjust to 1280x720 in-game and would then get 120Hz which is of course necessary to activate 3D. After that it worked flawlessly.

The problem with 3d vision is that they give you a fixed screen size reading for each display which is not all that suitable for a projector with varied configurations. This can mean that 100% depth on the slider will feel like 50% with the projector.

I am considering buying 3 of these projectors and running them in a 3D surround mode. So my question is, do these work in 3D mode when using the HDMI port on the projector? I would connect to my graphics card on the DVI ports.

I works with both connectors, I already tried it. I have mine connected with a DVI -> Hdmi Cable. I wish I had the space and money to do a 3 PJ setup like yourself. Can you post some photos and thoughs after you set it up, please? Would love to hear you opinion on it.

I have also connected my projector with a DVI -> HDMI adapter and it works without problems in 3D. I would also be interested in seeing a setup with 3 projectors! You definitely need a big room for this :-)

So far I am looking at maybe a GTX 680 for use with these projectors. Because I don't have the card in my hands right now (still using an ATI 5970) I am not sure if I need any special software to run for the blending of the 3d between the screens?

Well with racing sims, multiple screens with more resolution is a much bigger advantage than one big screen. Peripheral vision is key. At that distance from the screen, about 50 inch is a great size.

Answering my original question in more detail: the ASUS VG278H does not have any USB connection to the PC whatsoever - it only gets signals via DVI. If I had known this before it would have been clear to me that the IR transmitter can never be used for any other device than the monitor itself. When no picture is shown on the monitor there is no way for the IR-transmitter inside to know of any 3D activity.
The nVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision 2 Wireless Kit (which I managed to buy on Saturday in a local shop) on the other hand is attached via USB and is therefore operating independently in order to be used with different devices. So unfortunately I had to buy two transmitters in the end: one built into the monitor and one separate transmitter. But at least I have two glasses now to watch movies together with someone else

I am considering buying 3 of these projectors and running them in a 3D surround mode. So my question is, do these work in 3D mode when using the HDMI port on the projector? I would connect to my graphics card on the DVI ports.

I works with both connectors, I already tried it. I have mine connected with a DVI -> Hdmi Cable. I wish I had the space and money to do a 3 PJ setup like yourself. Can you post some photos and thoughs after you set it up, please? Would love to hear you opinion on it.

I see movies and play games in 3D (Battlefield, Metro 2033, Skyrim, Batman Arkham City, etc) and if you play with the settings you will get great/full depth. In BF3, for instance, we have to do it with in game command settings, opposed to Metro 2033, where you can do it trought the key shortcuts. I havent tried any 3D Monitor like he´s Asus 27´´, so I can really tell the dif.

@Badelhas: I didn't want to say that the 3D effect is bad with the BenQ projector just that the Asus 27" is a little better in this regard.

So far I am looking at maybe a GTX 680 for use with these projectors. Because I don't have the card in my hands right now (still using an ATI 5970) I am not sure if I need any special software to run for the blending of the 3d between the screens?

The only thing about that setup is that the screens are much too small... they look like 50 inch each, dont they? I have a 88 inch diagonal and It´s great. More that than and you begins to loose too much light. Much less and its a bit of a waste, isnt it?
