AVATAR movie, 3D vision trailer would be a Great demo!
  1 / 2
For those who don't know, Avatar is a sci-fi film releasing in cinemas on December 18th by director James Cameron (Aliens, Terminator 2, Titanic..etc). It has supposedly cost $240 million to make, ground breaking effects by Weta digital (especially the avatars themselves) and what's interesting to us here is that it's been tagged as the movie that will make Stereoscopic 3D.

The hype around the web is very strong, ecspecially due to the through-the-roof impressions from recent showings.
Ubisoft is also working on the videogame that should release this November (which will offer 3D on all the platforms it releases on).

Now.. August 21st has been dubbed Avatar day. On that day you can watch 15min free at most Imax cinemas and a trailer will release online and across all types of theaters.

Wouldn't it be terrific to have a version of that trailer for the NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Movie player software? I think it would be a great demo. I've talked to people (film buddies) mentioning they would invest in 3D Vision no questions asked if the trailer was offered in 3D stereoscopic (the movie itself is going to be a cultural event). Not to mention the actual film when the time comes (while we wait years for a Blu-ray 3D standard to be made and HDMI 1.4). I think Nvidia should take a note of the great opportunity here.

Anyways, a bit more on the film:
Avatar is set during the 22nd century on a small moon called Pandora, which orbits a gas giant, and is inhabited by the tribal Na'vi, ten foot blue humanoids that are peaceful unless attacked. Humans cannot breathe Pandoran air, so they genetically engineer human/Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars that can be controlled via a mental link. A paralyzed Marine named Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) volunteers to exist as an Avatar on Pandora. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

I don't understand this. The game studio announced that you need a 120hz or 3d ready tv. Does that mean they're shipping the game with shutter glasses? How can they do that?

Personally I have no idea how they're going to do the console versions (in 3D). I guess they will just have old anaglyph with included cardboard glasses.
I have seen an image though where the actors played the X360 version (seemingly) and they used the Real D glasses so I guess it's possible to hook them (the console versions) up to a true 3D cinema system if you should be fortunate enough to have access to it.

I don't know how it will work either, but Ubisoft says you'll need a 3D ready TV, 3D Shutter Glasses, and an Xbox 360 with HDMI. link.

I tweeted the question to @officialavatar and @nvidiadeveloper (if you write @ in front of a username it's like directly messaging them in the world of twitter).

The product manager of Nvidia 3D vision picked this up and sent a word both to me and officialavatar (if you're reading this, hey to you sir!).

Wollan: @officialavatar Will the Avatar trailer release for Nvidia 3D vision (stereoscopic 3D for PC) on August 21st? http://tinyurl.com/9zv8ug
Wollan: @nvidiadeveloper Will the Avatar movie trailer release for Nvidia 3D vision on August 21st? Would be a great demo.
andrewfear: @Wollan @officialavatar Im the product manager for 3D Vision and I would love to be able to have the 3D trailer to shoe people. Let me know

Is anybody at NVIDIA awake?!

Why is there no AVATAR trailer in 3d? That would be a great demo. As time goes on it seems like there's only 2 people at NVIDIA working on 3D.

Avatar movie trailer destroys apple.com records: http://bit.ly/4zeVPs
Previous trailer record on Apple.com was 1.7 million views in the first couple of days, Avatar more than doubles it with 4 million views!

I have a feeling this film might become a cultural event.

Also, Bonus!
A scene from the 16min Imax preview (a bit fuzzy): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5LyXiFUSbI

And the actual movie trailer for those who missed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzlqpMer3yE

Well, for one thing that would be a two-way street. I'm positive nvidia would jump on the Avatar bandwagon in a heartbeat, but as we all know the studio has had Avatar info on lockdown for years -- I doubt they're about to license nvidia to use their footage as a demo right now.

But yeah, in a perfect world, I'd LOVE to see an Avatar demo in 3d Vision :D Maybe something like that will materialize after the theatrical release (maybe as a promo event for the dvd/blu-ray release?). Ultimately, though, I just hope they have the good sense to release the movie on DVD or Blu-Ray in Field-Sequential format and not just stupid anaglyph like most 3d DVDs. I'm tired of having my home movie viewing experience held back by the general public's lack of resources.

As excited as I am for the release (and I am very excited!), unfortunately I doubt we're looking at a "cultural event". With a little luck, the film might be a success, but the general public typically doesn't turn SciFi films into major mainstream landmark events unless they're heralded by a major movie star. Yes, Avatar has James Cameron behind it, so that will get it some attention, but it has no Will Smith, Keanu Reaves, or even Tom Cruise headlining to get it into the mainstream consciousness. And most people don't even have access to a local IMAX theater for the 3d experience. It will undoubtedly be a huge hit among certain demographics (i.e. the "300" crowd, gamers, tech geeks, etc), but overall I fear we may be in for another "10,000 B.C." situation where the general public just doesn't catch on.

But here's hoping I'm wrong and the film blows away the box office! :)

I am upgrading to 3D for the AVATAR game. (nVidia glasses are in the mail). I saw the 3D footage at IMAX in August. Simply breathtaking. I haven't seen anything like that before. It pretty much forever converted me to 3D and it was only 15 min of footage.

probably the blu ray avatar release, will come in 3D next year with 1080p for each eye..
yet, the blu-ray group is going to release the other 3d movies (chiken little, bloody valentine, ice age, etc.) next year too

it will be very exciting!

This is said to allow for all their older games to be played in 3d also, the patch will allow 3d play for avatar......from what i have read. IMO to play on a game system you would still need a fast tv and a set of "their" 3d shutter glasses (xbox and ps said they will go with stereoscopic 3d) and this is what is need for good s3d. I am waiting till this game comes out, going to rock everything. S3D is the way avatar was meant to be played.

I have heard Sony say that it is a possibility they may release a patch to play in 3D. When they showed Wipeout HD in 3D all the blogs said that Sony announced 3D is coming to the PS3 but then Sony backpedaled and said only that it is a possibility in the future. As for 360, I have not heard them say anything about going 3D. I have both but I'd rather 360 be leading the pack as I play it WAAAY more. However, if Sony did go 3D first, I'd be purchasing the PS3 version of games every time. :)
