hello Helifax !
i have a Asus ROG Swift PG278Q (TN) i'm very satisfied with it, i never got any problem :)
I have the aim to get 3DSurround like you, using 2 other PG278Q.

there is also https://www.amazon.fr/Asus-PG279Q-Gaming-DisplayPort-USB3-0/dp/B0168W2524
do you think it's better to keep TN (it's more reactive, no ?)
is it possible, for example, to get 2 IPS monitors (like Asus PG279Q or viewsonic) for "left & right monitors" , i keep the PG278Q for the middle screen. it's because i heard IPS monitors are better for view angles (but less reactive)
i don't care about "165hz" because it's only to play with 3DSurround, i have no consoles.

All 3Dvision games are working ALSO in 3Dsurround ?
i think to buy a SLI of 1080 Ti (if there is one... no infos from Nvidia :(
Do you plan to upgrade your system ?

@greatxerox:
Whatever you do, make sure those Monitors are 3D Vision Ready certified. I haven't heard anyone getting 3D Surround working with EDID hacks...
3D Surround requires 3 identical monitors (Make & Model) otherwise you will get lots of issues with it:(
Regarding 3D Surround, yet all games that work in 3D Vision will work in 3D Surround.
However some games don't like Surround/Eyefinity/21:9 and there are lots of hacks and fixes around (some of which I made myself).
www.wsgf.org is normally the best place to look for this;)
I will upgrade at some point when the Asus 1080TI OC Strix (or equivalent) will be on the market;) I think I will still keep my 27 Asus monitors for 3D Surround. 3x27 inch is a HUGE real-estate and I actually had to modify my desk to accommodate them;)
Regarding TN vs IPS. My 3D Monitors are TN. At work I use 2x 4K IPS panels for coding, as the 4K adds a lot of real estate in Windows. Honestly I can't see any difference between them (But I didn't compare them side by side as is a bit impossible ^_^).
There might be a difference but I didn't noticed it.... So, is your choice. What think is best for you:)

helifax, thank you for your infos :)
So i'll get 2x PG278Q.
i saw your Asus monitors are "only" 1080p. your SLI is enough powerful to use 3x 1440p . so maybe you'll be interested when you'll get a "ZOTAC 1080TI eXtreme" :)
and what about 3x 4K 3Dsurround LOL , is there a 4K 3Dvision model ? i never saw that.

1080p is still enough for me;) 1440 Looks a bit better in my opinion but they eat up a lot more GPU...
If you plan 3D Surround I would stick with 1080p ;) 3D Surround at 1440p will murder any GPU (even the 1080TI probably)...
Then again, on a 1440p you can always go back to 1080p but it will never look as great as a pure 1080p one as is not the native resolution... (this is the reason I stuck with my 3xSamsung 2233rz for sooo long as the native resolution was 1680x1050 ^_^ and in Surround it matters a lot).
Don;t know of any 4K 3D Vision Ready monitor.... (but doubt any GPU could push that ... Maybe SLI?)

you think so ? 3dsurround is so demanding ? i think all games (even the last Tomb Raider) are perfect with your SLI at 3x 1080p no ? so i think it will be fine on 3x 1440p

ROTR gives me 30-50 FPS in 3D Surround. That is on top of overclocked 980Ti to 1500 Mhz (Close to what your 1080 is, more or less).
Also, my CPU is clocked to 5GHZ (not sure it matters in this game) as well...
You will not be able to push 3D Surround at 1440p with 2x1080 in ROTTR more than 30-40FPS (best). 3x 1080p might get you around 50-60FPS which would be awesome.
In any case, a stock GTX 1080 is around 20% faster than a stock 980Ti. Now, if you overclock that 980Ti and the 1080, things will be better (but unless you have a solid rig and cooling the "crap" out of it, I don't recommend it).
You can go 1440p in 3D Surround, but don't expect awesome performance ;)
For reference, I can run DOOM on 4800x900 on ULTRA (after the wrapper Update) at 55-60 FPS in 3D Surround. That is 3x 1600x900 resolution. In 2D is the only resolution I can keep 120FPS as well (in 3D Surround). 5760x1080 = 3 x 1920x1080 gives me around 95-110 FPS in 2D, which is around 50FPS in 3D (and you can see the eye-sync in this case).
3D Surround is a different beast;) and it really requires LOTS and LOTS of power and wattage to run it smoothly ;) You are welcome to try it! I mean don't let this discourage you! It's awesome! Best thing I have experienced! (And also tried the VR thingy). Once you see it, is either you "fall in love" with it and never "go back" or you don't like it;) (You can't judge taste ^_^ But, most people love Surround, 3D even more ^_^)
But, you also needs a lot of "food for the beast" ^_^

I really should get around to posting up some pictures of my setup.
I am running three of these in an Obutto revolution cockpit and it's pretty mindblowingly amazing to the point that I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to a normal desk.
4k pfft.
But yeah there isn't really a PC on the planet that will run this in 3d surround at good performance with the 1440p resolution in anything but the most simple of games... one day maybe.
I have however got away with playing Borderlands 2 at pretty good frame rate at 1440p with minimum adjustments to graphics quality however as long as I set physics to low.
I agree with helifax. this setup is the most impressive if you can get it going opposed to anything else I have experienced.

thank you for your messages very detailed ! i didn't think 3Dsurround was so demanding oO
In fact, i need to upgrade my system because 2xSLI 980 isn't working very well with VR (HTC VIVE). A single card works better, but it's boring to deactivate / reactivate SLI. So i let SLI activated.
Supersampling x2 is needed to compensate the "low" resolution of VR games. 1080 is really needed for SS.
Of course, i need the most powerful system because it's also in order to use with 3Dsurround (i love it)
3Dvision 1440p with SLI 980 is just perfect ! i'm always at max details in games (i just disable AA, or put ANI x2 , because it's no use due to 1440p) but of course there is only ONE monitor.
For 3DSurround, i think to buy this 2xSLI using HB Bridge with this model but for 1080 Ti (i hope)
https://www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/zotac-geforce-gtx-1080-amp-extreme
(this 1080 is the most OC using air cooling)
@Necropants : your SLI TITAN X is the "old" one or Pascal ? i'm interested to your rig, because it's very close to my aim. you have also the same Asus monitor
Helifax & Necropants, i see your CPU are OC. i have the same one but not OC. Is the OC of the 4790K provides a gain of fps ? i thought CPU OC was useless now. (it was different some years ago)

Not if you are playing in 3dvision.
You are looking at an effective 15360x2880 resolution, since everything is rendered twice and blended.
Take a moment to reflect on what that means performance wise. =P
I haven't done the benchmarks. But I definitely feel the difference with an overclocked CPU.
Mainly with games its speed of the individual clocks rather number of cores.
I have seen tests recently where the evidence seems to suggest you are better with 3(4 without hyper-threading) very fast cores for most games. Until relatively recently even a four core system was a waste.
I am running the Maxwell Titan X. But I doubt this situation is going to change that much with the new generation of it even if you have the cash to fork out for an SLI setup.
Personally I am waiting to see if there is a TI version on the horizon.

you are right it's 15360x2880 oO . your advice helps me a lot.
i'm not an expert with cpu OC, so please could you tell me what settings you choose for your CPU, in the BIOS.

you think about SLI. As you know, finally 1080 Ti will fall in 2017. So i'll fund for it. i'll wait probably
https://www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/zotac-geforce-gtx-1080-amp-extreme but a Ti model.
what are your predictions about benchmarks ?
maybe you know this channel : a SLI 1080 is very impressive (no 3dvision of course)

(my cpu is watercooled by CORSAIR H110 Hydro Series. Atm, it's like this (no OC) :
you think about SLI. As you know, finally 1080 Ti will fall in 2017. So i'll fund for it. i'll wait probably

what are your predictions about benchmarks ?
maybe you know this channel : a SLI 1080 is very impressive (no 3dvision of course)
