Memento Mori 2: Excellent S3D in a point&plick adventure ...and other adventures playable in S3
There are only a few point&click adventures that are not prerendered in 2D but use 3D as e.g. the games from Deck13 or the first part of Memento Mori.
Usually these games offer quite simple or comic like graphics.
An exception is the new
Memento Mori 2
This game offers very impressive graphics with a lot of details and many light and post effects. This is a quality You usually get in AAA titles.
And the good news: it also supports 3DVision! So You can use all effects like dynamic shadows, bloom, depth of field, etc. without any issues. Convergence is locked - but it automatically adapts to the different scenes and in contrary to many other games with locked convergence it provides a lot of depth. The only (and common) issue in this game is the 2D mouse pointer. But I guess most of us are used to this and this is not a fast-paced action game. Also the pointer changes it's appearance when You hover above an hot spot and if You use the hot spot help they are shown at correct depth on the objects (see http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/3d4dd/image/4fdf0276378501bd03000000/ ).

Don't be astonished about Lara's hair color: I have made a TexMod file that changes her official light red hair to dark red/brunette /shifty.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shifty:' /> (PM me if You want it...)

Memento Mori also offers 3D graphics. Using Nvidia drivers You have to turn off dynamic shadows and reflections. Using the iZ3D driver with the option to render shadows in mono I even could enable dynamic shadows and reflections for this game. There are still some issues with glow effects in 2D with both drivers. As Helixmod crashes the game I made the attached TexMod file that removes the textures for the glow effects. Unfortunately I didn't make a savegame for all locations when I've played the game some time ago (in 2D). So there might be still some glow effects left...

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't thought about point and clicks in 3D.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Great post, I may have a look at this game though I haven't played an adventure game since Dreamfall (which I liked a lot)

It is really worth to take a look at. Now that I have completed the game I can say that it offers not only impressive graphics but also nice and varied puzzles (a few of them quite demanding, thank God for walkthroughs /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> ) and an interesting story.

I wanted to add some other adventure games to the list: - The Walking Dead - The Testament of Sherlock Holmes - Louisiana Adventure they offer as far as I played them (only tested the first chapters) a very good S3D experience with minor issues. - Jack Keane 2 suffers from some issues with dynamic shadows. But at least it should be possible to remove them with Helixmod and still get a good S3d experience. I will provide a shaderoverride that removes the shadows when I will find enough time to play the game...

I *think* walking dead renders better on tridef just an fyi for anyone who wants to play it. Wow, memento mori has great style. http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/3d4dd/image/4fdf0290378501bd03000001/ I also some screenshots of the testament of shelocke holmes. They also look surprisingly good. http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/neocid/album/507c6869a3e067f03a000003/ Ive always seen point and click as budget games which is ironic since so many big budget games are straight console ports....looks like I need to re-evaluate and give some of these games a try. The main draw back that people worry about is 2D mouse, I really dont think its a problem. At first it takes some getting used to and it becomes a non issue the more u play.

3D adventure games have to compete with 2D adventure games with hand drawn sceneries of a very high quality. So the 3D graphics in some of these games are very good. Besides from that the areas that have to be designed are often limited compared to an action adventure, first person shooter, etc. So there is more time to create detailed sceneries. Not least findig the relevant objects among many others is an important game play element. Many adventure games offer the possibility to blend in the hotspots You can interact with. This is often done in 2D like the 2D mouse. So this is also quite helpfull to place the 2D mouse at the correct place.

Just want to add The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 to the list. DarkStarSword is working on a fix for this game. I'm also looking forward to Dreamfall Chapters. But unfortunatelly it will use the Unitiy engine so I expect many issues that hardly can be fixed...
