Hopefully you are not limited to budget... CPU = get an i series or the new Sandybridge. As for GPU get the best one you can afford, Like a GTX 580.. maybe the new Ti if your on a budget.

I keep reading about how great and powerful this SandyBridge cpu is, and I have also read that Intel threw their customers a bone with a more powerful processor in exchange for selling out to Hollywood and DRM. The DRM is built right into the chip and there is nothing you can do about it. I also wonder what kind of spying can be accomplished with a chip like this.
I don't pirate software or games, never have and never will.
I think you should have better investigated this issue before recommending this cpu.
As for me, I have enough Big Brother in my life and if Intel keeps this up my next chip will be an AMD without the DRM built in.

That's a fair point. I could have researched it better.

But nothing has been confirmed either way as to how Sandybridge DRM will affect pirated media or pirates in general. Just a lot of speculation so far when I search now on google.

Has not DRM as an idea/product existed in many forms over the years... each new implementation better then the last? Pirates have always kept pace I think.

I don't like Big Brother either but at the same time I don't blame big corporations, etc for wanting to protect their media.

I don't like the CPU for me because I don't want to have to replace my MB as well at this point. And I don't think I have a SPU bottleneck for games yet on my lowly 920.

If I was just starting out fresh though I would consider Sandybridge in the face of all the speculation.

Would anyone else or am I alone?

His fps looks low. because of FRAPS ??

On my system:
core i3 @4GHz
GTX 580 (895/1790/2050)
1920x1080
4xAA
all other in-game settings identical to his
3D vision on

My fps is about 5fps more than his, at the exact same moment.

Same here. I did research too and all I find was that there is HW in Sandy Bridge that somehow enables protected streaming video that comes in via the internet. My impression is that if this web based video is 'pirated', it won't play. If legit, it will play, sorta like HDCP, only on the CPU.
Of course this is just an impression based on a 30 minute search on the subject, but I found nothing that said "Sandy Bridge will search your hard drive and if SB finds some software that it doesn't like, it will report you". If I ever find that SB does "search and report", then I would find that very disturbing and would like to know about it.
The main thing I learned is that DRM has no standards, it can mean just about anything.

Very interesting thread seeing as I'm about to buy a SAMSUNG PS50C680 too. I will only use this for FSX so 24 frames should be ok as its pretty slow visual wise compared to most games. Just one thing, is it always possible to select 1080p/24, or does the crappy driver forbid it unless it feels like it? I just know from past history that nvidia drivers can be a nightmare sometimes.

Thanks for any info.

Yes, can you run at 1080p24 with 3DTV Play. The trick is that you may need to run your desktop at an HD 3D mode of 1080p24 since some games use the desktop's refresh rate to run in.

Thank you very much Andrew. FSX is perfect at 24 frames, you can't tell the difference.
