Acer245HQ and gridlines / grainy textures / scanlines
i am forcing the problem if i am entering the stero mode in 3d games i get a bad look on my screen. that effect is described here in board more than one times, called grid lines, grainy textures, scan lines or checker board pattern.

but in all of this thread their was no solution or the root of this effect really named or confirmed.

it is a bad manfucatured monitor, less gpu power, driver settings or something else?
in one part nvidia spokes of old monitors ( first generation) but i think the acer is meanwhile a new one and it is listed as compatible. so such effects should not be happend or a reason the rma the display.

i only have this effect in 3d games, not watchign 3d moives.

If you installed the correct CD 1.2 and you have gone through the setup okay, i can only think you may have a fault. Contact your supplier or manufacturer. I certainly do not have that problem.

The problem is there on all the monitors! It's not defective, but just some sort of weird anomoly that happens in 3D mode. I had it on my Samsung, I have it on my Acer 24", my friend has it on his Samsung, and futureshop has it on their Samsung display. Some people don't notice it and probably never will. My friend doesn't see them at all, and to me they are VERY visible. There is no way that everyone has a defective monitor, and good luck with Nvidia. They are just as clueless as us or they don't want to admit there is an issue. My simple solution is to lean back a little and the scanlines disapear. Don't play with your face right up to the monitor.

I will be trying the Acer projector next and I will report if there are still scanlines visible.

As you say maybe some people cannot see them, but i have tried everything, sitting really close, really far, nose up to the monitor (Acer 23.4) no scan lines.... /stud.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':stud:' /> Asked my wife to look and no scan lines.

Check out this great review......No scan lines mentioned.

i tried to other 120z displays from friends same effekt. they are just there. the best description for this effect is if you play a game in 16/15bit colors and look at the transparent parts. one time yesterday it was gone, looks like it come from the driver / performance optimations.

i also noticed and dragon age origins the driver is not rendering the same pictures every time, if i have this bad effects and unwear my glasses i can see in one pic the character portraits fully rendered and on the other pic for the other eye only the background from the portraits rendered. after restarting the game several times, on both screens the character pics and background is rendered, and than the scanlines are gone too.

similar will happen to other games too i tried, sometimes the scanlines are not there, but only sometimes 1of 20 game starts.

btw the review you postes shown exactly the effect that happens... pic from acer

sure the picture was m8 for show ghosting, or perhaps it is a pic without a shutter glass before.

but if you look at the pictures you see als this dark pixels between the othert, good to see in the "ghost pic" and on some surfaces.

and if you where your glasses now the ghost pic is gone, but the darker pixel apperas like a checker board patter still remains.

try to take a game with some transparent effects and reduce the color down to 16bit it looks similiar.

perhaps it is a trick by driver to reduce the ghosting effect to generate every second pixel as dark / transparent for one eye. i remind many many years back you used this the produce a transparancy effect. but in this case their is no need for any picture should have all their pixels right. for that we bought 120hz lcd.

I have to agree with NQRott, this effect is visible on all my 3D-Vision LCDs.
I have it on two Viewsonic 2268wm and also on two Samsung 2233RZ.
This effect does not affect the whole image. It does only effect some parts and thus is difficult to see sometimes. But when looking at still images is can be seen easyly. Especially when switching between 2D and 3D mode!
Sometimes the effect looks like a checker board pattern, sometimes it looks like interlaced lines.
For me it is most visible in areas which are not very dark and not very bright but just in the middle of the brightness scale.

CRT-monitors and DLP-projectors are not affected! I guess the effect is caused by the method to run the LCDs at 120Hz.

I notice the same thing on my Samsung, in the form of interlaced-looking lines. However, it does not constantly look this way. If I make a change to the video mode (resolution, refresh, etc) and then change back to the default, it goes away. Also, I've noticed if I use 110Hz instead of 120, it never seems to appear. Not sure if it's the same for everyone, just my observations on my own setup.

perhaps there is something wrong with all of this lcd and they can not handel really 120hz or using 2 panels a 60 and they are a bit shifted interale or whatever i have no clue. but for bundled or official compatbible devices it is a bad quality and at least a bad support, no official statements. no one to nail down to fix it.

Okay so you have determined that the issue is the LCD monitors and it happens to all of them. based on that I doubt the new LCD monitors will be able to fix this problem. It's just the technology and the panels you are using. No driver is going to fix this and no firmware update is going to fix his.

you have three choices left to you and sorry if I sound mean.
1) Accept the LCD monitors the way it is.
2) Wait until they change the way they make LCD monitors I have no idea when that will be.
3) Buy a DLP projector or tv and don't deal with this issue.

I chose option 1) since the LCD monitor is the cheapest option and I don't notice it unless I am looking for it, especially in fast moving games.

the effect happens too if you start a game wihtout S3D activated it is enough if the ir emitter is plugged in 3d not activated, so only 1 image @ 120hz, if you unplug the ir emitter and restart the game i have the full image quality on 120hz.

can somone explain this ? why is there a differnece between 1 image @120h with a plugged ir emitter and unplugged ir emitter? what change this internal in the lcd?

**** UPDATE: The problem re-appeared after I rebooted the machine. And trying the below doesn't seem to help anymore... I am not sure if this is due to the Graphics card. I am using Gigabyte's GTX295 card. :-(

Hi all,

I had this problem and managed to solve it. I hope this will help all those who are having this same issue.

I just got my nVidia 3D Vision last week and had this same problem and originally I thought it was how 3D Mode was supposed to look... Then I updated from my original CD Drivers (v1.18) to the new v1.38 drivers and the problem dissappeared. I could see full no-scan-line, grainy 3D mode. It was great.

Then I installed Need for Speeed Hot Pursuit and the 3D mode went back to the scan line problem.

So uninstalled the v1.38 drivers and reinstalled the original stock drivers v1.18 and voila the scan line issue dissappeared. I then upgraded back to v1.38 and it is still working fine... Not sure if the problem will come back the next time I install another game but I hope not. Nevertheless all you folks who are facing this problem, perhaps you could try this...

I also noticed that when I was having the issue, the 3D test during setup (where the installer shows a blue triangle and a green cube for each of the eye), the triangle was on the left when the scan line issue is there. But when the scan line issue is not there, the blue triangle is on the right eye.

I am not sure but could this be due to some refresh rate that got reversed or something?

**** UPDATE: The problem re-appeared after I rebooted the machine. And trying the below doesn't seem to help anymore... I am not sure if this is due to the Graphics card. I am using Gigabyte's GTX295 card. :-(
