Assassin's Creed 3 - real 3D game fix, beta release

Mike & Bob: Cool stuff guys!
It appears that you've made some awesome progress.
(I think I have AC2 laying around here somewhere. While AC3&AC4 may not interest me I wanted to acknowledge your hard work and efforts.)
OUTSTANDING! Huge thanks to all involved! I bought AC3 a month or two ago and had been holding off playing it in hope of such a fix.
I'll just mention; I did a double take when I saw in the install instructions that the KB2670838 update is required. I have recently been having troubles with fatal memory leaks, which Task Manager showed me was due to a 'dllhost.exe', with the description 'COM surrogate'. A little googling indicated that this issue was related to Internet Explorer 10 (apparently happens with 11 too, which I had installed) and, yep, update KB2670838. See here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/why-does-dllhostexe-com-surrogate-consumes-memory/bd7e42bb-802d-4eb9-95b2-2bb6b566996d
The advice they offer is to uninstall both IE10 and the update KB2670838, and set updates to manual so you can prevent Windows from automatically reinstalling them. I was actually pretty much just about to follow this procedure, but since I need the KB update for this fix I guess I'll just uninstall IE and hope that does the trick.
Just thought I'd mention on the off chance this is relevant to someone else here.
Thanks for that pointer on the KB2670838. This is something that I need to take a closer look at, because it fixed the crash, but I still don't know exactly why it is necessary. If I can make it work without that patch, I will.

Given that not very many people use these forums, it's important to get the word out, including in other languages. Thanks for the reminder, ronrebell!
Lets try this in Japanese; hope Google can catch it:

Hey guys, I don't have AC3, but I just wanted to come in here and say a big "THANKS!" for working on stuff like this.
-- ALSO --
I really appreciate it when people post side-by-side screenshots like the one on the original post. Being at work, and unable to see any true 3D screenshots on this computer, it's really cool to have the opportunity to use the 'cross-eyed' method. Also, it's a really low-tech way of showing people who have never gamed in 3D to be able to 'see' what they are missing out on without having to put down the initial investment.
In fact, why doesn't NVidia try and utilize this more often on their 3D Vision marketing? Why not show some side-by-side screenshots and a brief set of instructions for how to view it in 3D by manipulating your own eyesight? Is that too risky, thinking people wouldn't be able to do it and get too turned off by their own failure?
-- Sorry to derail the topic with these comments - I think I'll start a new one, because I think it's a legitimate talking point.

Nice work! I have yet to buy any of the Assassin's Creed that didn't work with 3D Vision, I especially haven't been in much of a rush since there's also so many complaints about performance with them and I'm still trying to push 3D@1080p60 to my TV on a single 670. Anyone else running on a single 670? I'm curious about the performance and if I should even bother keeping an eye out for a deal on this.

I have a single 670 (Gigabyte OC edition), I get pretty significant frame rate drops in open areas like Boston and also in cut scenes, even with Environment Detail on normal, though task manager shows my CPU maxing out (Phenom II X4 @3.6GHz), so I suspect that's the bottleneck. Changing other graphics settings doesn't make a big difference. If you have an i5 or something I reckon you'll have a much better time.
Speaking generally, 3DVision/3DTV Play itself doesn't seem to impact performance noticeably in my experience. I have heard that other S3D options like Tridef do hit your performance significantly.

This game is all about the CPU, the GPU is not nearly as important. I'm even running super-sampling with my SLI580, and can get 30fps in Boston.
Please let me toot my own horn for a second- I put in some effort to do performance profiling on 3Dmigoto before we finalized the fix, and with good analysis I managed to get the minimum frame rate up by 20%. This dropped the performance hit from 3Dmigoto from 12.5% of CPU to 3.7% of CPU. I can make this a little bit better, but you should see essentially the same performance both with and without 3Dmigoto.
One last thing- make sure that you see ALL of your cores active. When testing I routinely see 85% CPU usage. If you see any less than that, you have some sort of concurrency/blocking/multi-thread problem I'd like to know about.
You are so amazing!!!
Just tried with win 8.1 Update 1. Can't install platform update, as it is only for Win7 SP1.
AC3 crashes.
Yes, sorry for the problem on 8.1. I looked into this using Zig's log file, and the problem looks to me like a bug in Win8.1 that Microsoft introduced. They changed the documented behavior of a class called IDXGIFactory2, and made it return an error for calls that work in every prior version of the OS.
The bug also shows up in other software, from what I can tell, including blowing up SweetFX, BF4, and Black Ops II. Look for bugs with IDXGIFactory2 in the search. If someone finds or knows for sure that they don't have this problem on their 8.1 system maybe we can work out what is needed.
This is not a 3Dmigoto bug per se. I can possibly work around it, but that would involve changes that I really don't want to make because it's risky code. Given that Microsoft broke an API that used to work, it's possible they will fix it with a patch. Of course it's Microsoft so they might also just say bite me.
