DirectX 12 games. Can they ever be 3D?
Hi, This is both a general DX12 and a specific Forza 7 question. The game won't even start if 3D vision is turned on. I assume this is because it is DX12 with no DX11 option. (Tomb Raider did the same thing with DX12 on.) Also it is made by Microsoft. Does one or more of these factors mean it will be impossible to ever make it work in 3D?

3D vision works on DX12 for sure even in windowed mode which isn't the case on DX11. The games I have tried are Tomb Raider and Battlefield 1. Tomb Raider is a bit broken of course since the built-in 3D was made for DX11 and Battlefield 1 actually looks pretty good on some maps but only if you set a certain compute flag in the game profile. However performance is kind of bad in both games compared to DX11 from what I remember. I have no idea why Forza 7 wouldn't trigger 3D since I don't have the game but I assume it's either a profile or Microsoft Store issue. The biggest problem is that there is no way to fix them atm because 3DMigoto doesn't support DX12 and furthermore I don't think the API is optimized that well yet.

I think someone would have to develop a wrapper and at this time I think it's a waste of effort. Maybe in a few years if/when Dx12 becomes widespread in use. Even dx11 took a number of years to take off

Is it possible that DX12's fate will be similar to DX10? Maybe DX13 will be more widespread if they release it!

dx12 will never become more popular than vulkan nor have widespread use. no one likes to be forced to use an os they don't want.

Do you make an effort to come with this nonsence? Your posts are pure stupidity. How many Vulkan PC games can you name?

I lost interest In Star Citizen when they announced changing to vulcan. No 3d vision, no care as far as I am concerned. I feel if it ends up going the way of the dinosaurs I will likely stop gaming all together.

Yes, there is no real point to make a wrapper work for DX12 or Vulkan because so few games require it. Writing an wrapper is an unbelievable amount of thankless work, like a full time job for a full year. No one is going to do this for something as poorly supported as Vulkan or DX12. As long as a game developer is not an idiot, they won't skip the 95% of the market that already has DX11 capability for something speculative like a different graphics API. A different graphics API is not typically the most interesting work a game dev faces. There are possibly some scenarios where a DX12 approach will be better for performance, but mostly performance problems are broken or poorly thought out architectures, not an actual hardware problem. Really though, all this talk about Vulkan and DX12 is the usual straight up marketing bullspeak. You and I both know that not a damn thing is going to happen with those APIs until the consoles start to use them. The consoles drive the PC gaming market, and that's not going to change.

I never had this desire until i started listening to Yahtzee Crowhaw's channel (from Zero Punctuation) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-Q4WBqNtMF_2GbIsGjic4A ...and also Giantbomb and tested podcasts, AngryJoe and Angry Video Game Nerd. These guys love those games and have reminded me that i did once too. I started with my friends Atari and Doom on his Dad's super fast 486, played some Nintendo, but never owed it myself. I only had a few Sega Genesis games, but right after that i bought Falcon 3.0 and started simming, then bought Dark Forces and bascially became PC only, so i missed out on most console experiences. From their excitement about these old games, i think if something happens to 3D Vision or i just get bored, i'm thinking about going back all the way to the start and playing through these games that i never got to play, or only got to play a few minutes/hours of. Sounds fun. When i look on craigslist here in the states, i see tons of good deals for old consoles coming with many games.
