Troubleshooting failure to enable 3D in Google Earth since R265 drivers
1 / 2
Hi, I'm hoping to connect with some troubleshooter skills, as I work through a problem with a 3d vision kit, running on GeForce GTX 560 Ti, under windows 7 64 bit. Driver version 270.61 - so current as of Spring 2011. Basic functionality is working, and I can view the test stereoscopic 3D video.
I used to have tridef installed, and I was able to see Google Earth in 3D. But my trial ran out, and I read that 3d is supported in google earth. I could not get it to work, so I called MSI, and they said to push Control T, but that didn't work - google earth stays in a 2D mode.
I thought maybe this was a side effect of trideff, so I uninstalled tridef. Then ran all my tests again, but no 3D in google earth.
What should I do to trouble shoot it? Maybe there's a setting somewhere that I have to change for google earth to use stereoscopic mode???

3D Vision supports Window mode, you dont need Tridef. Please first download Release 270 drivers.
Then have a new option for when to launch 3D apps: fullscreen, Always, or when 3D is detected. We have a KB article on it here.
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2955
Also make sure Google Earth is in DirectX mode, not OpenGL.

I am using driver version 270.61 and I can run the "test stereoscopic 3d" application, so I think my setup is working fine. But I don't see "a new option for when to launch 3D apps". Is this in the Nvidia control panel, under tasks? It is not listed in my case (control panel is listed as version 3.6.750.0 under help menu, system information item).
I was also given a link to a regedit setting (see http://3dvision-blog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34&start=10) but, I also tried that, and still no 3d in google earth.
Please comment on how to get to the option for when to launch 3D app.

The option is right up the set-up stereoscopic 3D control panel.

Ok, I'm looking at the "set up stereoscopic 3D" page of the nvidia control panel. There is no button called "Select when to display 3D mode".
I found "set Keyboard shortcuts" and that's where "Show or hide stereoscopic 3D effects" is set to Ctrl + T. But when I'm in google earth street view, and I press ctrl + T, nothing happens. Also tried the other keyboard commands, but they also have no effect.
Could you check "about nvidia control panel" to see if we have the same version. I have Version 3.6.750.0.

I also cannot run Google Earth in Nvidia 3D vision. Ctrl+T does not work. Google earth is in DX9 mode. Tried windowed, maximized, full screen. The option "Select when to display 3D mode" is greyed out (see picture). Is my video card not supported?

Thanks for pointing out the grayed option. Yes, I see it now! But in my case it is also grayed out. My card is a recent model, and I am using a more recent version of Google Earth, version 6.0.2.2074
but in terms of nvidia software I have the same. So thanks for showing that this problem is common with others. Maybe Andrew can identify what's causing this feature to be unavailable in the control panel, and 3D to be unavailable in GoogleEarth.

I disabled SLI and the "Select when to display 3D mode" was no longer greyed out. I set it to "Always" and ran Google Earth. It is now working in windowed mode and fullscreen (but I have restart Google Earth when switching between window/fullscreen.
The 3D effect isn't very convincing. Even after changing depth and convergence, the image looks the same as in the 2D mode. It seems like it's just rendering the same 2D image, but shifted, for each eye.

We do not support Window mode on SLI and that is why it doenst work for you. Please disable SLI and it will work. We published this in our KB articles. http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2311

Could you please point out where I should disable SLI? As far as I know, I never did enable it, because I only have one Nvidia card, and my understanding is that SLI requires two or more cards. I've looked through the control panel, but didn't see this either.
I do have a second monitor running off the one card. I hope that is not causing this problem. Generally the 3D effect is working (in the test application for example) even though I have the second (2D) monitor.

SLI won't be enabled with just one video card. I'm not sure if the second monitor is a problem. You can always disconnect it and try.

I've now sorted out the detour about sli. It isn't relevant to me at all.
When I removed the second monitor, then I was able to see the "select when the display is in 3D mode" option.
I set it to "only while full screen 3D programs run", then launched google earth in direct x mode. I ran google earth in full screen, pushed control T, but it remained in 2D.
I tried it with "always" setting, repeating the same google earth steps, but this setting also won't launch 3D.
What could be missing? How can I get Google earth to run in 3D?

I just downloaded and installed Google Earth. It installed Google Chrome as well which I did not used to have.
I have GTX 580 and also two monitors attached to it(only the primary monitor is 3D). I am using the latest WHQL driver version, 270.61.
When I have the second monitor enabled, my 'Select when the display is in 3D mode' option is greyed out, but it does not make any difference to Google Earth. The 3D mode works regardless, and it works both in windowed mode, and full screen mode.
Jerelo, you never verified that you are running Google Earth in DirectX mode (as opposed to OpenGL mode). Can you verify this? It is set up in the Tools -> Options dialog's '3D View' tab.
Just as reference, all I have to do to get Google Earth to run in 3D mode is:
1) Make sure Google Earth is in DirextX mode
2) Make sure nVidia Control Panel has Stereascopic 3D enabled
When I then launch Google Earth, the screen will blank out for a second, Windows 7 will switch to 'Windows 7 Basic' color scheme (I.E. Aero will be disabled) and Google Earth is in 3D mode. When I quit Google earth, Windows will switch back to Aero mode.
By the way, the 3D mode is most convincing when you are using the street view mode, zoom into any major city and you can 'walk around' the streets and all the buildings, etc. are in 3D. It is nothing compared to something like GTA4 or Mafia II, though, but still pretty cool.

Gilador, thanks for your helpful troubleshooting efforts.
I can confirm that Google Earth's tool/options/3D View/Graphics Mode is set to DirectX.
We are using the same WHQL driver version, 270.61, with the same monitor types (3D primary, 2D secondary), with slightly different cards (my 560, your 580).
I have steroscopic 3D enabled in the Nvidia control panel.
So we have established a base line with enough similarity, no?
Now, unlike you, when I launch Google Earth, the screen does not blank out for a second. The program starts normally, in 2D. I'm using desktop themes on Windows 7 Ultimate, and the theme stays as is. I've seen other times when it tells me its switching to windows basic, and that's not happening in this case.
I know what you mean about street view being quite astounding. I saw this effect when I was using tridef.
So, in terms of troubleshooting, I have something fundamentally off in my setup. It should switch automatically, as your system does, but mine won't, and has nothing to do with needing to press control T.
What simple thing might I be missing, I wonder. What simple tests should I be using in order to isolate the problem? I've mentioned that I can get into 3D through the test application, so, there's probably some configuration setting that's preventing a response to the commands google earth can give. I'm pretty new to Nvidia's 3D since I just got it a short time ago, and would really like to hear from someone who knows some simple tests to start narrowing down the problem.

3D Vision supports Window mode, you dont need Tridef. Please first download Release 270 drivers.
Then have a new option for when to launch 3D apps: fullscreen, Always, or when 3D is detected. We have a KB article on it here.

Any ideas why my software lacks this option?

How do you disable sli?

I've now sorted out the detour about sli. It isn't relevant to me at all.
When I removed the second monitor, then I was able to see the "select when the display is in 3D mode" option.
I set it to "only while full screen 3D programs run", then launched google earth in direct x mode. I ran google earth in full screen, pushed control T, but it remained in 2D.
I tried it with "always" setting, repeating the same google earth steps, but this setting also won't launch 3D.
What could be missing? How can I get Google earth to run in 3D?
