Entry Level 3D PC some advice plz
Hi guys,

Looking to take the plunge into 3d this xmas :D want an entry system before next year I will upgrade both PC and screen. Was looking at the DELL XPS 8100:

4GB DDR3 RAM DUAL 1333MHZ
i5 750 QUAD CORE 2.66GHZ
1GB 460 GTX

Going to get the OPTOMA HD67N projector which has a resolution of 720p in 3d. Altogether should cost around £1500.

So couple of questions guys for anyone who wants to answer, would be most appreicated.

1) The main question is will the 1GB 460 be able to run games smoothly at 720p? I'm talkin COD, Crysis....I don't really care about having it at max settings...but I want it to look reasonably good and most importantly run smoothly. I know 3d halves FPS.

2)Is the processor and ram good enough for 3d? Would i need to put 6gb of ram or a faster processor?

Thanks guys for any help.

At the projector resolution of 720p that's not a bad build, it should do. If possible I would try to make sure the system was SLI capable because you could double your horsepower just by adding another 460GTX (don't forget about power requirements). You should be able to play most current games at 720p with smooth framerates though, might have to turn down a setting or two in some games. The graphics card(s) are far more important for 3D performance than CPU/RAM. If you know anything about overclocking the i5's overclock like champs, I've got my i5 750 running at 3.61 GHz no problems, but its no slouch at it's normal clock speed either.

Cheers man.

Just checked the specs again, only got a 350 watt PSU :( no way near enough.. who r these muppets at dell thinkin that would be adequate? Although maybe they don't see the XPS as a gaming system. Probably look at Alienware. I've considered SLI for so long but I think it would be overkill for 720p. I was going to get a 480, but now the 500's are being released....typical lol. Anyways will update when I get the system :)
Cheers man.

get a pre overclocked 460 and your system will play practically any game at max settings.

the only issues you will encounter are physx games.

My set up is not far off that and I have not yet come across a game that doesnt play well in 720p...

My setup is a gaming HTPC, almost silent. and it pretty much beats an xbox or ps3 hands down, while still recording tv and all that good stuff...

perhaps you mean, "requires double monitor fps". 50-60fps on the monitor = 25-30fps for each eye.

For 720p, 460GTX looks sufficient now but if you want to play 1080p at max settings in the future, you may want to get a better card now.

My OC 260GTX is not powerful enough to smoothly play newer games at 1080p max settings and its performance is close to stock 460GTX in DX10 without AA. I might upgrade to a 470GTX and overclock it, but I am concerned even the 470GTX will not quite be enough for upcoming games at 1080p max settings.

quad core is not necessary, in my opinion, for gaming at 720p with a single video card but it will help to "future proof" your system. For gaming, you want high clock speed and more cache (which quad core has more of).

If buy a high quality "booster" power supply for the video card, you can use a cheap case PSU and you wont have to worry about having enough power for future single video cards. But make sure your case PSU has enough power to run your quad core, especially if you intend to massively overclock it.
