Is the IR emitter necessary or only for wireless?
I have a Gsync 144hz monitor that is 3d vision ready, and I was wondering if it was possible to plug the glasses into your monitor directly through USB instead.

Nvidia offered wired glasses, but I think that they were discontinued. It's also recommended that you use a USB port located on the motherboard. Make sure that you check out the Stereoscopic compatibility fixes that are available at http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html

As mentioned above there WERE wired usb glasses but Nvidia discontinued them. If your monitor is 3D vision ready shouldn't it have the emitter built in? If not then you'll either need the pyramid dongle + pc or 3d tv play.

I doubt it has an emitter though.
