AA solutions?
  1 / 2
I'm currently playing Alien: Isolation but since the fix does not work with AA the readme says you can instead use downsampling or DSR (to my knowledge these two are the same). I doubt downsampling/DSR would really work with Nvidia 3D Vision though? I took a peek at the DSR resolutions and the highest Hz i would get for these was 30Hz (with a 120hz 720p projector).. Even if i could somehow get 60 i doubt it would look good or even work for nvidia 3D vision. The fix also says you can use Supersampling for AA. Which is kind of odd since supersampling is just something that works for transparent surfaces (e.g 2D leaves on a tree might look better with SS but it wont do anything to a 3D mesh with no transparency). Is it somehow possible to use downsampling and still get 120hz (not sure how 3D vision looks/works with lower than 120hz)..

I am no expert so probably not best to answer lol but I recently played alien Isolation with DSR enabled. I had to use CRU custom resolution utility to make my projectors highest resolution set to 1280 x 720, then 3D vision would use DSR based on 720 instead of 1080 which made it work. Its a ball ache to be honest as have to delete all resolutions above 720 then set it back after playing the game, but it worked well, I couldn't play the game otherwise. Its still not great AA but vastly more playable. I have to do this with most games that allow decent performance with DSR applied. If anyone knows a better work round I am all ears as well :-)

You can also downsample, it has a much better performance and qualitywise it looks very close to DSR.. Set your desktop to 1280x720x120Hz, in the NVCP use the custom resolutions option to make a new resolution at 1920x1080x120hz. Now you can choose this res in the games... The PJ will do the rest, and there's absolutely no hassles :)

Thanks! I will take a look at those.
Set your desktop to 1280x720x120Hz, in the NVCP use the custom resolutions option to make a new resolution at 1920x1080x120hz.
How would you pass the "test" (which you have to press to get this resolution/hz) though.. it's not very likely that someone will pass 120Hz in 1920x1080 if your max is perhaps 60Hz (in my case its 30Hz).. Can you just press "enter" to pass it automatically maybe? Edit: no, just pressing enter doesnt make you pass this test and make this resolution available as a downsampling resolution in-game.. The screen just blinks if im trying e.g twice the resolution my projector is capable of, which i guess isnt too strange.. it doesnt "get" that you are just trying to downsample, its trying to make this resolution your normal screen res., which obviously just wont work. I'm probably missing something here.. Also, DSR.. this does not work with projectors, at least not with mine. it does not give you any more resolutions to choose from. If i switch to my monitor i get the additional ones. "CRU custom resolution utility" (which was mentioned) does nothing to fix this issue, i removed the resolutions over 720p, also tried removing all resolutions except for 720p, tried the restart exe etc..
Thanks! I will take a look at those.

As a General rule if you want to use DSR or Downsample always go for 4x resolution. It is lower FPS but it is worth it. The image quality difference is huge.
follow the link in my signature to facilitate your task
So it requires me to buy 3DTV play and that you restrict yourself to 60hz..? Not sure if its worth that really, how's the 3D for 3DTVplay in comparison to 3D vision? I tried the .bin without 3DTVplay, and it restricted me to 720p, 60hz, but still there were not even one DSR resolution available. I also could not turn on the nvidia 3D-syncing for the projector, i guess its why you need 3D-TV play to use this. I'm still really interested in using normal non DSR downsampling, but i dont see how its possible to use it and pass the "test" thing at 120Hz at maybe 4x the resolution the projector can handle. There's something im missing here..

My Optoma is a 720P 120HZ PJ, and by using an Edid override Acer 5360, it's possible to use downsampling as mentioned. Running 1080p 120HZ 3D Vision, unless you have a monster PC forget about DSRx4, though older titles is playable.. But DSR is only marginally better looking IMO.. Edit: I have a single 980TI and it can run Alien Isolation in DSRx4 but I get a smoother experience by downsampling and less hassle :)

How do you past that "test" though so you can add those custom resolutions? I dont see how it would be possible for anyone to e.g make a custom resolution of 4x your normal and still pass, it's not like the test knows you want to downsample it will just try to run your projector in 4x the resolution while still having 120hz, which obviously wont work.

You can't downsample 4x res ! 4xDSR is upsample/supersample and very different.. When downsampling it's the PJ that downscales the pic, but like I said it's hard to see a big difference between up- and dowsampling anyway.. I dowsample from 1080P wich is the native res for my monitor, that makes it easy to switch between them.. You should probably also use an edid, I don't know wich PJ you use ? Edit: Without an edid I can get past the test with 1080p 120HZ but can't run anything with 3D vision..

Ah ok.. I have a BenQ W700 (nvidia 3D Vision compatible) and soon a BenQ MH741 (1080p 144Hz, not 3D Vision compatible out of the box). 980 ti, 32GB RAM, 4.8GHz i7. Any EDID suggestions?

I played around this morning with Downsampling and found a custom resolution that gives the best results I achieved so far with Downsample or DSR on my Benq w1300 2240x1260 @120HZ I am using a edid I custom built because the Acer H5360 edid was somehow messing up my color calibration. PS: I didn't put the resolution in the Edid, If you want to try it you need to create a Custom res.
