What about Optoma 142x. Its incredibly expensive new but i heard good things. Im dying to buy a projector right now. 3D is soooo goood. Do i need EDID hack, do i need glasses? Should i buy 720p or 1080p? What about old models used?
you and me both in the same boat... i checked about 8 models and all of them falls because one spec or another... all i wanted is a "3d ready projector" that will be recognised on setup. i realized that no new projectors are such so EDID is a must with new ones.. EDID which i have no idea how to use but i will figure it out. so now the projector must have RGBRGB wheel and not RGBCW. RGBCW gives alot of rainbow artecfats effect. so now i am confused as hell about which one to buy!!!! if someone here will share which one he has and how pleased he is with it... it will help us alot.

I'm in the UK and have the Sony VPL-VW320es 3D 4K projector. It is expensive but my god is it impressive. In 3D 4K and HDR. I wanted a 4k projector for films but all the new 4k projectors apart from the sonys were either faux K or didn't have 3D. I also had the Panasonic PTAT-6000e 3xLCD 3D 1080p projector and that was also a really good projector. I'm sure they'll be less expensive models that will be very impressive also.

Summarizing my experiences:
[.]ACER H6517ABD: average rainbow artefacts, very annoying squeaking fan[/.] [.]Optoma HD 27: horrible rainbow artefacts, very silent fan (I think Optoma 142x is the older model of this)[/.] [.]Benq W710ST: no rainbow artefacts (this model is a 720p 3D Vision projector from 2013 and not sold any more)[/.]
Ok to clarify things: Most of current 1080p projectors are recognized as 3D projectors by default. Nvidia Control Panel lists them as so called "3DTV Play" compatible. This means you have to use DLP shutter glasses (not the Nvidia ones) for playing in stereo 3D. However if you already have Nvidia Shutter glasses and still want to use them you have to install an EDID override. I tested both 3DTV Play and 3D Vision on the two current projectors from Acer and Optoma listed above and I still prefer using 3D Vision as it works much more trouble-free in my opinion. When starting a game with 3DTV Play enabled the driver often automatically chooses the wrong refresh rate (720p@120hz instead of the correct 720p@60hz). Only workaround I found for this is to delete 720p@120hz resolution from EDID and lose the only resolution capable of 120hz in 2D mode. So more or less you have to modify your EDID for making it trouble-free no matter if you want to use 3DTV Play or 3D Vision. I will probably buy one of these 1080p projectors (3d capable):
[.]BenQ W1210ST[/.] [.]BenQ W2000[/.] [.]BenQ W1090[/.] [.]BenQ W1070+[/.]
I wouldn't buy 720p beamers any more because desktop and texts look horrible with this resolution.

This is as informative as it gets. Thanks alot Pauldusler for clearing that up. I am about to go for Benq w1070. I saw you added a + . Is it a different model than the one without?

The rest seems to be identical.

Hanangabai, I remember your post here many moths ago regarding the same topic: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1011300/3d-vision/projector-question-please-about-to-upgrade-and-have-no-clue-or-half-a-clue-maybe-/1/ A lot of people replied to that and there is great info there, you ought to read it thoroughly. I have 3 ViewSonic projectors. The first thing which goes is the power supply board due to cheap capacitors. If you have a bit of time, simply replace all the caps on the PSU board and your projector will be good as new for the foreseeable future. I feel this option is better than what you are trying to do now: Spend hundreds for something identical (actually worse, see below) and potentially running into the same problem a few years down the line :) If you are going to be gaming at 720p and this is the resolution you will be most utilising then do NOT get a 1080p projector. I made a detailed post with comparison shots of scaling issues of 720p content scaled to a 1080p projector in your original thread: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1011300/3d-vision/projector-question-please-about-to-upgrade-and-have-no-clue-or-half-a-clue-maybe-/post/5160077/#5160077

Hi RAGEdemon. it's amazing you remember my post .. thanks! i looked for my own post yesterday to but could'nt find it lol. seeing it now i see it got too technical for me, i don't have enough knowledge to understand it all so it got a bit of confusing. Pauldusler gave an advice not to go for old model this days. 1080p will also benefit movies as well and i know i will not get past 720p in gaming. i wanted to fix Viewsonic but could'nt find a decent lab with a fair price. tell me what you think! thanks friend

Pauldusler or anyone can confirm this? playing at 720p on 1080p projector is not recommended and give not so good picture comparing to a native 720p porjector?
Pauldusler or anyone can confirm this? playing at 720p on 1080p projector is not recommended and give not so good picture comparing to a native 720p porjector?
Actually I did not see much difference between my native 720p projector and the new 1080p projectors using 720p resolution - however I did not have the chance to compare it side by side. There surely will be a difference (you can see them on RAGEdemon's pictures) but when I tested the new projectors this was not noticeable for me because the difference was too subtle. On the other side if you should ever plan to play in 2D mode or just browse the internet, read texts (and so on) on your projector you will be glad to have a greater resolution (1080p).

That's great that you have decided on a projector Hanangabai. For note to anyone reading this thread in the future: Aside from image degradation at 720p, if you intend to play 2D games then just like gaming monitors which all boast 120Hz refresh rates, you should be aiming for 120fps on 120Hz projector input. A lot of the 720p projectors boast 120Hz input to show 120FPS. All 1080p projectors AFAIK are limited to 60Hz/60FPS. Most high motion gamers (FPS, action games etc) will tell you that 120FPS 720p is better than 60Hz 1080p. So it comes down to this: If your main intent is surfing the web, watching bluray/HD movies, playing low FPS games, then 1080p 60FPS projector is the best choice for 2D picture quality and high resolution. If your intent is to play high FPS games in both 2D and 3D, then 720p 120FPS projector is the best choice for 3D picture quality and high (2D) FPS. All the best!

Absolutely agree to this RAGEdemon but I think 1080p beamers combine the best of two worlds. 720p@120hz on 1080p might not be as sharp as on native 720p beamers but you are more flexible if you want to use 1080p now and then :). It's so sad we are still limited to bandwidth of hdmi 1.4a... why is there no DisplayPort 3D Vision beamer on the market... then we would not have this issue :(

i had my Viewsonic pjd6251. i enjoyed the 3d alot. i still fear that i might have issues while playing on w1070. it's mainly for playing but will use it for movies as well. sort of 30% movies/70% Nvidia 3d vision gaming. Pauldusler, have you felt any degrading while playing? any problem at all?

I also enjoyed playing on my BenQ W710ST but there is so much dust in the light channel now + image got darker (lamp lost luminance probably). That's why I'm also searching for a new projector. I felt no degrading after having the projectors correctly configured with EDID (except the damn rainbow color effects or nasty fan). Best worked for me to install EDID from an old 3D Vision projector so I could keep the 720p@120hz resolution but also still had 1080p. For making the projector work with DSR it's a little bit more tricky. You have to create a custom windows resolution which tells to downsample the picture further to 720p and not to 1080p - also you have to change desktop resolution to 720p before starting a game. But that's another topic - there is a detailed Thread about this in Geforce Forum. I already thought about integrating an automation in 3D Fix Manager - but currently I still have to buy a projector. I returned Acer and Optoma beamers back to Amazon because I was not happy with them...
