Any idea why certain area's in L4D come to a crawl when playing? I have been area's that are large with many visual effects with no stutter. Some smaller area's drop the FPS to a crawl and it makes the game unplayable. Very rarely an ALT-TAB fixes it.
The reason I know its the 3D driver is because you can hit "CRTL+T" and it shuts off the 3D effect and it INSTANTLY stops the stutter...
Any idea of what we can do to fix this? Can I provide anything that would help like LOG files?
This has been happening for about a week now but not the first few days... I have changed nothing in the PC since then. Haven't seen this issue in other games yet.
I took a while before I posted this because I wanted to make sure the issue wasn't me.
Seemed liek this happened after switching to the 1.04 CD
After installign the 1.05 CD the game stutters so bad that I think rolling back will reduce this...
I will roll back to drivers on the disc and post the results...

Hi
First, please provide all of your system details so we can figure it out.
Secod try running it with Stereoscopic 3D turning off completely from the Control Panel, don't just use the CTRL-T function. I would like to hear the results.

Will do with out the 3D enabled like you asked Andrew but I never had this issue when i first got the glasses i played for hours... now it seems I cant get sessions no more.

Hi
If you get a chance please also try your older drivers. I'm curious as to the slowdown now with newer drivers.

Hi
If you get a chance please also try your older drivers. I'm curious as to the slowdown now with newer drivers.
I have now found out the source of the problem here...
This is an issue that happens during gaming (shorts spurt of major slow down) goes in and out while playing. (but before you jump the gun let me explain)
Using Vista 64 with Media Center services can cause major slow down in Left 4 dead for no reason it seems.
I tried using all drivers possible but what I found out is that during your left 4 dead session with 3D vision enabled & having your media center record 1-2 shows in the background will cause this.
Now let me give the specs:
Q6600 2.4 @ Q6600 3.0 OC
Reaper 4GB 1066 Ram 1:1 (CPU Sync)
Multiple 1TB 32MB Cache Drives on 3.0 Gbps channels
1x Vista & Left 4 Dead
1x All shows are recorded on their own channel HD and SD
I have tracked it down to having your tuners record HDTV & SD at the same time on different channels, this causes almost no strain on my CPU ever!
I have run this setup for a while it will record both shows no problems and play any game I throw at it no problem. At most my CPU might take a 5%-10% hit for recording both shows and like I said its on its own 3.0gbps channel. I have never run into a problem running this set up and playing any game of my choice in 1920 x 1080 with all effects on.
Now the kicker I still don't have an issue doing this in Left 4 Dead, I can play for hours with no FPS drops... well this will work perfect in any game, even more harsh games (power wise).
Now lets add 1 more component the 3D vision. I have played this for hours with both shows recording & 3D vision with no issue, but randomly you will get this stutters that are so bad the sound , picture , input all drop to 1 FPS.
If you ALT+TAB it will fix it shorlty, but it will happen again. If you get the stutters you can hit CNRTL+T and it stops instantly!
I can even press CRTL+T again and it turn the 3D back on and im standing in the same spot but the stutters are less or NONE.
Its not an area, its not the TV shows recording (i play Fallout 3 at max for hours in 3D no problem, while recording), its not cause there are too many zombies on the screen. The computer can handle it easily, again alt+tab and ctrl+t prove this because I can bounce back and forth and see it fix its self and also worsen.
Crysis + 3D + Media Center (recording SD & HD @ same time) = OK
Fallout 3 + 3D + Media Center (recording SD & HD @ same time) = OK
GTA IV + 3D + Media Center (recording SD & HD @ same time) = OK
AO Conan + 3D +Media Center (recording SD & HD @ same time) = OK
WoW + 3D + Media Center (recording SD & HD @ same time) = OK
I can keep going here...
But most important do not take this as a FPS drop issue that I am complaining of its really worse, its an almost freeze of the game. And it only does it with Left 4 Dead.
Now for the last part it seems that having all this on also makes the walls and floors turn clear after it stutter hard for like 2 minutes then it stops and comes back and looks normal. Again if I alt+tab and use cnrtl+t it can fix this issue instanlly too!
Its really weird I can try to post a you tube video if necessary to help... you can see the computer running through this issue.
If I can be any more clear on certain areas please just ask

Found the source of the problem, it has nothing to do with recording of the video but another Media Center Component. I have found a way to fix it for a good while, not sure what triggers it back up in Media Center but ending the process, it will automatically restart and problem is gone for hours... even while recording 1080P and SD shows at the same time!!!!
the culprit is ....
"ehvid.exe" Windows Media Center Video Analysis Process
When the stuttering happens, I don't even have Media Center open only two shows recording. I ended the service, the computer frees up 20% of nothing and the problem is gone and even the service acts like normal again.
But wait... Doesn't ending the service mess up the computer watching TV? Or mess up the two shows recording? NOPE!
Opened up Media Center put live HDTV on then ended the process, all three process stay working. Two recording show and watching one of them at the same time.
After I end ehvid.exe the service restarts and doesn't act up again... work like 0%-2% it goes to 20% spikes then goes away... I looked up what the process does a lot but I am confident that the service and something else are banging heads causing an issue.
My suspicions are:
1) When entering Windows Media Center, the 6 foot interface turns 3D (because of full screen) then if you launch TV it doesn't stay 3D only the menu is. This happens by accident from my family opening the Media Center, it launches in 3D automatically so they hit CNTRL+T to turn it off. MAYBE this messes with ehvid.exe i don't know...
2) The xbox 360's which act as a Media Center Extenders, maybe collide with the 3D being turned on when Media Center open in 3D by accident.
Again, not even sure if any of these are true but this seems to happen with Media Center (ehvid.exe), Left 4 Dead & 3D Vision

This update has DOG'D many systems. You would never know that a Microsoft update did so much damage and it specific to Media Center Users.
This issue has Nothing to do with Valve/Left 4 Dead or 3D/Nvidia PERIOD! It just wasn't noticed until I turned on L4D and 3D Vision. The update cause super spike that bounce 20%-30% for no reason. ehvid.exe isn't ever suppose to act that crazy when you actually research it.
Uninstalled KB955519 by going here in Vista "Installed Updates" and removing the update...
Rebooted and so far so good...
Enjoy Guys, hope this help some future users...

I will roll back to drivers on the disc and post the results...
In meantime anyone else? Any Ideas?

If you ALT+TAB it will fix it shorlty, but it will happen again. If you get the stutters you can hit CNRTL+T and it stops instantly!
I can even press CRTL+T again and it turn the 3D back on and im standing in the same spot but the stutters are less or NONE.

This happens under two conditions
1) Media Extenders
2) Corrupt Recordings In Media Center
The actually culprit to this whole issue is specifically this Microsoft Update KB955519
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955519

Just so all Media Center Users know:
The update I posted above should not be un-installed anymore as this bug was not fully fixed by uninstalling KB955519.
KB955519 doesnt even hit your system anymore while updating its skipped for the newer fix below ...
The new update that comes via Windows Update did fix the issue with the service in full.
I can now record 2 HD shows and 2 SD shows at the same time and still play Left 4 Dead in 3D
Hope the info is helpful to you media center owners
This fix has worked on my older OC Quad Core system and my newer i7.
The issue is laid out here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960544
Lets hope that Windows 7 fixes this as the issue was still in builds prior to 7074 afterwards I have not been able to test much
