GT240 + Asus VG278H 120hz 3D Monitor for photography
I would like to buy the Asus VG278H 120hz 3D monitor, has the NVIDIA’s 3D Vision 2 kit included and glasses. My current PC is an i5 + GT240 video card. I just do 3D photography, no video or games. I hope the video card does not have to be so powerful.

My question is whether a GT240 card is suitable for 3D full HD ( photo) picture and if the card support the 1920x1080 full HD 120 Hz (60p). The maximum Digital Resolution for the GT240 is 2560x1600 but they say nothing about the max refresh rate. My current monitor is a low cost 1920x1200 LCD display at 60 Hz refresh. There I can not set other refrsh rates now due to the current monitor limits. If I go to the store they have powerfull cards and PC's for demo but I d'nt believe always what they promise for older cards.

Since I have not the Asus display now, I can not see the necessary screen resolutions and refresch speeds. If I look at the specs of the GT240, hey say 3D vision support. Supports the GT240 card 1920x1080 @ 120Hz ? If not I need to buy immediately a new PC, the current powersupply has not sufficiently power to put a faster video card. If I need to buy a new PC in that case the card will be the GTX560 (OEM) or the GTX550 ti but as the purchase price is immediately much higher, I would rather wait for this new PC.

Yet here clearly indicate that this is about 3D photography and no video games. I do a lot of high-speed closeup macro 3D photography (insects in-flight 3D) and wants the highest possible display quality.

I'm not 100% sure but I think a GT 240 will be powerful enough to simply look at 3D photos in the 3D Vision Photo Viewer.
The 3D Vision photo viewer can open .jps .pns and .mpo files in 3D.

Will you be editing or processing 3D photos? Which software will you use for that?

Beware: many 120Hz monitors have poor pixel quality.
For 2D photo editing, it will almost certainly be better to use your current 60Hz monitor.

I use 2 computers. One computer is for 2D photo/video/internet work with an old 60Hz LCD monitor. Second computer is for 3D gaming with a 120Hz monitor.
My 120Hz monitor looks .... bad in 2D. it's ok for games in 2D but not ok for serious 2D photo/video work.

Let us know what you think about the Asus VG278H.

Thanks for the answer.

I have updated the driver to the last version. I can see more selections and there the 3D vision 1920x1080p is on the list:

but they show 59Hz. I have also an older PC but with the GT9600 video card and there they show 1080p, 1920 x 1080 by 60Hz (32-bit). I believe it will work. I possibly exchange the video cards as the GT9600 card has 2 DVI ports. I hope to use the 2 monitors.

As software for my 3D photography I use StereoPhotoMaker to process the pictures. The 3D setup use 2 Nikon D300 cameras + beamsplitter, the original high resolution files are in RAW format. Multiple file formats are supported in STM and the 3D Vision Photo Viewer show already the files on the 2D monitor as anaglyph pictures. I hope the 3D actieve monitors looks also good in 2D mode. There you have no polarisation screen, so as 2D monitor it must works as a normal full picture 1920x1080 monitor. If I can use my old monitor as second display that will by practical. I have done 3D photography in 2010 for one year and has thousands 3D pictures. Now in 2012 I'm started again with the beamsplitter system to take 3D in-flight closeup insects. ( Flickr home page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotoopa_hs/ ) All technical info is also on the web, hardware PCB mechanics etc.

I hope to have the Asus 3D monitor at the end of this month, I will give then the results.

I just received my new Asus 3D monitor. The ASUS VG278H 27” 3D monitor works fine on my GT240 card in full HD 3D resolution 1920x1080 60p. My 3D pictures are now super to view with the vision 2 glasses. The .mpo files from StereoPhotoMaker show perfect on the 3D display at full screen. In 2D mode the monitor is also super and the 27 inch is for me better to see then my older 25 inch 2D monitor.

It's good news that you like the VG278H for both 2D and 3D. /stud.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':stud:' />
Good luck with your insect photography.
