Looking to get new 3D TV, how imporant is checkerboard support?
So I've decided to pick up a new 3D TV and I'm considering various options. Still undecided on plasma vs led, would like some opinions on which is better for 3D gaming.
Also wondering how important checkerboard support is. I see now where that has been added into 3DTV Play, but its not easy to find it on many TV models. Apparently only the high end Samsung LED's have it for 2012 (7000, 7500, 8000) but they are all pretty overpriced and come with so many "smart" features that I simply do not need as I have a PC hooked up to my TV.
I could go with an older TV such a 2011 Samsung LED's, or 2010 LED & Plasma.... but am I losing out on quality with an older model just to get checkerboard? Is that worth it? Funny thing is those older TV's cost just as much as the new ones at most places... I guess supply & demand at work, maybe because people want checerboard?
Otherwise most options only give T/B, SBS and framepacked, which means no 1080p@60 on 3DTV Play. Should I even worry about checkerboard for 3DTV Play? I keep hearing about TriDef gaming and that it will support SBS at 1080p60hz. How good is TriDef vs 3DTV Play, are there many games that work on one but not the other? Is it worth paying more / getting an older TV just to have checkerboard so I can do 3DTV Play at 1080p/60 ? Or should I just say screw it and get a cheaper / newer model such as the Samsung PN51E550 (very nice price) and use TriDef for gaming in SBS?
What about HDMI 1.4a? I have a GTX 670 that supports that, I believe that will support 1080i@60hz with frame packing and therefore 3DTV Play. Has anyone seen how that looks, is that good enough that I shouldn't worry about checkerboard support on a TV?
Thoughts?

I saw CB for the first time the other day. I would probably go for a CB 3DTV if i was going to buy another LCD TV, which was going to until I found that two 2012 Samsungs I tried had too much input lag to be usable while in 3D. I thought the image quality of CB was good, but i was a little disappointed that it didn't quite match some of the wilder claims, like that it looked like full 1080. Still, better than 720p and in my opinion, it looked better than SBS from Tridef, but take that with a grain of salt since i didn't have time to do much close observation. SBS is scaled across your screen and adds a lot of haziness, looking only a bit better than 720p, on my Sony at least. With Tridef you can force AA from the control panel, you can't with 3DTV Play for some reason, which makes a HUGE difference in games, like Mass Effect, that don't have AA as an in-game option.
I'd like to try some more testing to see if the ES800 or ES7500 had an option i didn't see that reduced input lag, but i'll probably end up getting a projector. I don't know, im really annoyed at this market right now, everything seems like its a huge compromise. I would definitely take your computer to a store and test the 2012 models out first before you bought one. I hope you do, because i really hope i was wrong about the input lag. 2011 Samsungs do have more crosstalk than the 2012. The 2012 in the digitalversus review had almost none, less even than plasma. On the other hand i tend not to notice crosstalk once im engaged in the gameplay, in fact my screen can be a total mess of crosstalk and not bother me because im not paying attention to it.

I have two and i say yes. its the best compromise for large screen tv's. it looks better than 720p on the tv's.
i personally enjoy the 720p projector the most even though its lower resolution. but not everyone has room for 10' projector screens- or can stand the idea of pixel loss. i moved a year ago and dont have a good spot for my 3d projector. so ive been using the 65" tv- and im still enjoying 3d games very much. screen size and image quality are the most important features for me.
if you want to save money while we wait for real 1080p 3d you could get a used DLP tv. i see them for 500$ locally. 65" or more. its a good bargain. the 3d is perfect. bulbs are cheap.
the sammy is nice too but i prefer the DLP for gaming- no lag no ghosting. others like the sammy more. im not sure if they own both. I like my sammy for 3d movies. its in my living room. keep in mind taste is subjective. ive been gaming since 09 on DLP in checkerboard. so i think im used to the DLP look. others feel the LCD is higher quality image (when not taking ghosting and input lag into account).
its defiantly a good idea to take your computer and test them out for yourself. forums have allot of bs fanboys. forming your own opinion is best because everyone has a different idea what is best.
Im personally saving up for the 92" DLP tv. that thing will be a monster!

I honestly dont think I'd care about 3D as much as I do without my dlp projector. Regardless if its 3D TV/PROJECTOR. Id definetly say go dlp. I believe the mitsubishi's supported checkerboard but cant say for certain.
@Danieljoy
Lemme know how it goes if you ever get the dlp tv.
Im same as you, Id take the res hit for dlp any day. Ive boughten monitors cause people keep saying no/little ghosting and have always been disappointed.

i have a mits. 65" dlp since 09. ive been running checkerboard 1080p since then. i was thinking about upgrading to the 92" dlp. but i dont know- i really want a large screen 1080p setup. but ive been waiting since 2010 for that...
and yes they are discontinued. i think most people value thinness over performance. kinda like a PC vs apple computers. we all know the PC trumps the mac in performance, but the macs sure look nice. i suppose if i wanted a wall mount tv the thin TV would make sense, but most use a stand. my dlp is thinner than any stand.
at least we can still get the DLP projectors. im salivating for real 1080p at the consumre level. i dont like gaming enough to buy a 100k theater projector.
