You can bitstream films because they're already all encoded in some form of DTS or Dolby (lossless or not) that support multichannel surround sound. For games you still need to use DTS connect/DDL over digital, or multiple analogue connections. HDMI is generally not an option. There are a handful of exceptions, such as battlefront that supports atmos and I believe a few others that natively support dolby surround or DTS. Different with consoles, all the output from games and otherwise is already encoded in DTS/Dolby. That's a key difference between PCs and consoles. This is why I use DTS connect over digital to my main room, but in my study I use 7.1 analogue. Most new receivers have dropped analogue inputs, which is I went out of my way to look for older models of AV receiver that support DTS and have proper discrete analogue 7.1 inputs. I'm using an Onkyo TX-SR605 that I bought cheap from avorums. It has full analogue inputs + decodes all the old formats including DTS master audio etc.
For games you still need to use DTS connect/DDL over digital, or multiple analogue connections.
Right, but this still requires that you have the support for it. Like I posted previously, on some instances one is supported but not the other. In some cases they are available as a purchasable option. I also linked to a hack/workaround for some sound cards. The article that GibsonRed linked is good because it shows exactly what needs to be done to get acceptable surround in old games that is not simulated. I was close, but didn't realize the steps needed for Alchemy to work properly.

Hi fellas, So I upgraded to the AVR Marantz 6010 (Dolby Atmos/DTS-X). So my sound configuration is now 5.1.4 :) PC->HDMI2->AVR->HDMI2->TV It's awesome and works perfect in movies with PowerDVD :powerDVD's audio option to non decoded High Definnition Audio to external hardware (AVR) Problem is in BF1, Atmos option is greyed in Audio BF1 option so in game I only have Dolby surround but no Atmos at all... I don't see any option in BF1 to bitstream it in Atmos as the Atmos option is greyed and can't be enabled... Any Idea?

Chtiblue do you use single HDMI for audio only ? Atleast for me atmos works. I use hdmi direct to amp and different cable for video. Sometimes i have to turn the audio option from in game into stereo and back to Surround and then enable atmos option to get audio. There is some initialization problems with the games atmos audio. Im jealous about your maranz, i bought cheap denon. I have older marantz , The dynamic in them is just awesome. By the way did you know power dvd blyray playback is total crap ? I don't personally use it with my projector as a good stand alone is better and easier, But i have disgussed with a fellow movie freek that has moved into pc playback from oppo. He's using jriver media player. And according to him the quattro cards (even the cheaper ones) Give much better playback than gtx cards. My friend just said the power dvd is crap. I have 13 and i also can't say that good Things about it But i have not used it that much.

Hi metaholic, Yeah I'm very happy with the Marantz sound, my grand father had a marantz ampli I really enjoyed ;) The price (650€) is half from last year because new 6011 is out. No I'm using one HDMI cable for video and audio: PC->HDMI2->AVR->HDMI2->TV because I need HDMI on my TV for 4k3d interlieved, it works fine thru the Marantz AVR, I thought I needed to buy the Club 3d display to HDMI2 converter because I only have one HDMI on my gtx1080 but it seems fine. Whatever I'm doing Atmos is still greyed and can't be enabled. I'll try a fresh install with the last nvidia driver. PowerDvd 16 runs fine here except a little too fucking capricious with 3D bluray movies ;) I tried jriver, but it's little austere and I don't find any option to play movie in 3D
don´t you have displayport 2 hdmi adapter ?
Nope, do you? Which one? In fact, I figured that soon I enter any game, I saw that in windows panel audio device it switches everytime the Marantz HDMI audio (Atmos DTS etc capable) by PhilipsTv HDMI Audio (only stereo!) as device. So ingame The marantz only see a stereo signal (which is upmixing by the Marantz but it stills stereo)... So I probably need an display port to HDMI adapter to transfer video only to the TV, and separate HDMI for audio to the Marantz, I hope it won't switch the audio again...

My marantz AV7702 Mkii works with Dolby atmos fine. I'm running a 7.1.4 setup. Powerdvd works well too and is the only player on PC that plays back 3D bluray iso's. It is a shame about slysoft. Cinavia can go and do one.

Personally looking into all this stuff a while ago, I settled on just a standard pair of high quality Stereo Headphones, and I'm convinced it offers the best experience now compared to running the surround especially for positional audio providing the game developer implements sound correctly, running through an external DAC of some kind to reduce Case/electroic sound bleed.

Hi GibsonRed, My Marantz 6010 works fine with atmos in movie too. But as I said, in game Windows switches to hdmi tv stereo device instead staying with marantz audio hdmi. I think it's because my 4k tv is plugged through the marantz via hdmi because I only have one hdmi out on my gtx1080. Is your monitor directly plugged too your gtx or through the marantz?

I have monitor plugged directly but i don't game with it. But my gaming setup is hooked with displayport to gtx and HDMI from denon amp to gtx with the HDMI dp adapter And im pretty those if im using only HDMI out from gtx to amplifier pushing 1080p@120hz frame Sequential 3D and atmos or master audio, the audio is limited to 2 channels. I wont put my head on a pole for it though. The movies use 1080p@24hz frame packed. If you use 3D vision 1080p@120hz frame Sequential its Takes 5 times more bad with. Am i right ? Anyone
