GeForce 3D Vision Questions Before I Buy
  1 / 2
Hello everyone,

I was hoping this great community could answer some questions I have surrounding GeForce 3D Vision.

1. I was looking to buy either the Viewsonic bundle , or the Samsung bundle . What one is better?

2. Will it work well with my current PC? I have an Intel Q6600, Two 8800GTS SSC edition, Windows Vista 32 Bit Ultimate Edition, 4GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive (two 500GB hard drives).

3. I am looking to play the new James Bond game, Fallout 3, GTA IV, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty World at War, Crysis, Far Cry 2, and Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway, to list a few of the newer games.

4. Can the 3D mode be turned off with the video card's control panel, and therefore would I be able to play in normal 2D for older games or games with bad ghosting?

Thanks!

welcome to the 3d vision community :)

1. I think you will have a difficult time finding anyone who could answer that first question as I doubt there is anyone on here who have tried both.

2. That system should work out just fine

3. Ive heard Crysis doesnt work TOO well with 3d vision yet. Fallout 3 looks very good, world at war looks AMAZING, havent tried COD4 but ive heard mixed results, Far Cry 2 is decent, havent heard much on GTAIV. Check out the thread on here that has a list of the best looking games in 3d Best 3d vision games list

4. 3D can be turned on and off instantly in game! :) There is a button on the IR transmitter that does this

I havent tried either monitor but I have a 67" samsung DLP that does 3d and its a pretty intense experience. You will want to get Left4dead without a doubt as its hands down the most impressive experience in 3d so far. Ive heard great things about world of warcraft but I dont play it so I cant comment.

Final thoughts: GET IT! Its worth every penny and it will only get better :)

I can only attest to the Samsung bundle, it was the first available and what most buyers have. I have heard a few things about the Viewsonic monitor, and they weren't exactly positive. I think to be safe you should get the Samsung, you can't go wrong with it. Crysis works well, but there is a problem with using scoped rifles that cause double images in the scope. Other than that, it's good. Most games will work well but there are a few that might be better in 2D. There is a thread in this forum that lists the best games, so that should give you a good idea. When you run the game in 3D, there is an overlay that gives tips on getting the best results which you should follow. After that, you can turn off the overlay. Your system should work well, it will give great results. Keep in mind that it's a new product and the drivers are still being developed, so dont' expect perfection. I'm sure in time the kinks will be ironed out. Have fun.

Thanks for the replies. When I ran the test to see if my computer could handle 3D gaming, it said my 8800GTS was not good enough for the recommended. It met the minimum, but I do not want to play games with minimal graphics. Does that 3D test recognize that I have two cards in SLI?

Thanks!

Use a program likes FRAPS to see how many FPS you're playing while in flat 3D. It should be above 60 to play in 3d smoothly, but the higher the better experience.

Keep in mind, whatever game you play that with the 3d vision you will get HALF the framerate. So take your favorite game, jump in, if you get 70fps (using fraps) then your fine. if you get 30 fps, then you will have to lower the settings. 3d vision doubles what is displayed, so it cuts your framerate in two, one for each eye.

As for the viewsonic vs samsung. I've got the viewsonic. Without even trying the samsung, I figure it has to be better than the viewsonic. Here's my post in the "samsung vs viewsonic" topic:

I recently went with the viewsonic instead of the samsung to save the $50. I wish I had spent it. I read that the samsung has some bleed through on dark screens along the edges, and somewhere else I read that the viewsonic was virtually the same screen.

I've had the viewsonic for a week on Wednesday. The only adjustments are the brightness and volume. Of course I don't use the built in speakers at all.

I've got a few problems with the screen. First off, it wobbles left and right when I type. It's got a very thin/narrow neck from the base to the monitor and typing causes it to rock back and forth. It's very annoying.

The next issue is that it doesn't turn on when booting up. It needs the correct drivers in windows in order to work, so if I didn't have a second monitor, I wouldn't be able to edit/change the bios or see anything until my PC was in windows. I don't even know how someone would install this screen properly in Vista without having a second monitor available to do the software installation.

All in all, I wish I had spent the extra $50 on the samsung instead of this viewsonic. I've been a big fan of viewsonics for years, and my other screen is a 22" viewsonic LCD. I really feel let down by this $350 LCD. If it didn't have 120hertz, it wouldn't be worth $100 in my opinion.

You probably have V-Sync enabled if you're at 60fps, so you'll likely go higher. This makes your FPS about 30 with 3d vision, so yeah it should run fine. 30fps is roughly the lower end of where you want to be. You don't want to drop below that for very long or you'll start to notice it gets choppy.

Disable vsync and see where your at. vsync (vertical sync) will max your FPS at whatever your monitor is capable of. So most LCD displays are 60hertz, so your only going to get a max of 60fps showing in the game. Hence why a 120hertz lcd like whats required with the 3d glasses is able to display at 60fps (60 for left eye + 60 for right eye = 120 fps total / 120 hertz.)

You can disable it via the nvidia control panel.

Stay away from 3D! It's addicting and once you got a taste for it you'll never get back! I'm captured but i need to warn you! Stay away from it or you'll end up as an insanely happy gamer!
