Strange 3D Vision Issues- has anyone else heard of this happening?
Hi all-

I've been having the strangest problems with 3D Vision lately- I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what I can do.
My rig:

i5 2500K (not OC'd, stable, cooled with H50)
16GB DDR3
1TB HDD
2x Gigabyte GTX 560s running cool and stable in SLI
Windows 7 x64
Latest beta drivers- 290.xx

Asus VG236H
3D Vision I wireless glasses and emitter.

I suppose it is worth mentioning that I run a dual-monitor display with the Asus monitor and a Samsung HDTV, but right now I'm only using the monitor.

Since I got the 3D Vision kit a few months ago, I've run with little trouble. I stopped using 3D for a while, but I want to try it again. This monitor is very finicky with DVI. When I use a dual link DVI cable (both the one that came with the monitor and a longer one I bought for my weird dual setup), I never see an image on the screen until Windows is loaded. No POST screen, no loading screen, just blank and then desktop. With HDMI from the video cards into the same monitor, booting is normal; it is also normal using the TV only or other monitors.

So lately, Nvidia control panel has been saying that my native resolution is 3968 x 1279. Right now I have the monitor set at 1920 x 1080 @ 120hz, and games run fine, just without 3D Vision actually enabled. But when I try to enable 3D Vision, the screen goes blank, and I get an "OUT OF RANGE" error, which can't be fixed without switching outputs or worse unless I press escape right away.

I think NVCP thinks the native resolution is 3968 x 1279 @ 12hz (when it should be 1920 x 1080 @ 120hz) and is defaulting to this res when I try to enable 3D Vision. I called Nvidia, who told me to call Asus about the EDID, who told me to reinstall the drivers, (which I did, twice, and note that the problem still happens in both the latest WHQL and beta release.)

So how can I fix this? Is there something wrong with the video card/monitor/cable/software? The weirdest thing is that it has worked perfectly for hours of gaming before. It just "decided" to break all the sudden. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

First, can you try disconnecting the HDTV completely to drill down on the DVI issues.

For the POST display problems, can you go into your motherboard's BIOS and see if there's a VGA Init setting, if there is set it to PCIe Init 1st, or specify which PCIe slot to boot from first. Also, try switching the output on the GPU itself. Lastly, check your monitor's OSD options and see if there is an option to specify input, if there is set it to DVI-D instead of HDMI or AUTO. The problem here is your display may be waiting for Windows to load your VGA drivers before it sends a signal to wake up.

For your resolution problems, again, unplugging the HDTV can help you drill down the issues. Try to set everything from the NVCP for multi-display support, resolution and refresh rate. Once in the NVCP, go ahead and choose 1920x1080p with 120Hz and 32-bit refresh rate. Run a game or two to verify 3D is working. Then go ahead and plug your HDTV in and see what happens. Go back to the NVCP and check the resolution and refresh rates to make sure everything is nominal, make sure your Asus is still set to primary or focus output, then reboot, run a few games and see if everything works in 3D still.

Thanks chiz-

I did indeed disconnect the HDTV; the issues still came up. I tried all the things your recommended, and even hooked the monitor up to a friend's computer who also normally runs 3D Vision. He got the same issue. I'm beginning to think it is some defect in the monitor. I will try and RMA through Asus. Thanks!

np, last thing I would check before RMA is if you have another Dual-Link DVI cable, and try connecting it with that.
