A WORD FOR NVIDIA - READ IT, 100% truth
  2 / 2
About 5 years ago when they started offering dual processor motherboards they did benchmarks and it was obvious that having two 1 gig CPUs was better than having one 2 gig CPU. That's why I am confident that the two channels will benchmark faster than one card. The problem is that it's very expensive.

Now, the question is, wouldn't stereo 3D be better on 2 cards? If each card can process each view wouldn't it work better?

I have been playing games in stereo ever since the Elsa days and fully support the idea of SLI and stereo. I have yet to invest in a PCIE rig, but I may make the jump once the stereo drivers are release for the 7800GTX. One of the most frustrating aspects of stereo gaming is the performance hit and driver support. Painkiller has to the most beautiful game in stereo, especially with 8xS and AF. However, these settings slow my 6800GT AGP to a crawl. It would be great if I could just add another 6800GT and get the performance I am looking for without spending $600 on a 7800GTX. Drivers... As to why Nvidia doesn''t pimp Stereo like they do SLI? Simple. Stereo effects can''t be summed up on a bar graph while the increase in performance from SLI can. When will stereo go mainstream? When a consumer level device (Playstation 3?) supports stereo with the option to purchase an inexpensive 3D display (emagin). Too many "gotchas" in the technology right now.

I have very rarely been really concerned with the need for Stereo3d and surround sound.

The thing is, the only reason I'd want it is to increase gameplay aspects. I'd want it in my strategy FPS where sound is a dire need and knowing where gunshots, foots steps, doors opening and closing, etc... exactly where they are coming from.

In most my experiments, the 3d effects from enhanced sound has helped me far less than my set of headphones, of which the 3d doesn't add as much "effect". Stereo3d has increased the effect of some single player gameplay, loud and pumped, making games like Doom 3, Call of Duty, Half-Life 2 or Painkiller a hell of a lot of fun to play when I have it all going. But as far as strategic gameplay, it does not aid me whatsoever, and I'll have my headphones plugged in more times than not to get the full aspect of where things are coming from in precise knowledge.

Furthermore, as said I do enjoy games more with the sound, atleast in single player gameplay. But while games like Call of Duty definitly benefited big time on sound and power gameplay, the increase in wanting higher end graphics on the game along with the gameplay, as oppose to the sound, is what consumers more likely than not are wanting. A pair of headphones and the power of visuals and physics are far more appealing to a gamer wanting to get more enriched in their virtual world. Good sound is more like a cherry on top for the overall sundae of performance.

That being said, I still think Nvidia should concentrate on aiding the sound in their upgrades more than they currently do.

Stereo 3d is a method of viewing your game and seeing real depth information, typically using lcd shutterglasses.

What would nVidia have to do with sound?  How would SLI have anything to do with audio?  Good grief.

Ironicly, I've had issues with crackling noise in some of their updates. But it doesn't really. Someone is just stating that they should be concentrating less on going full force with graphics dominance, and the new SLI enhancement, and spread it out.

Nvidia Stereo 3d has nothing to do with sound. Its playing games in stereoscopic vision (3D) by wearing shutter glasses to see the game in 3D.

LOL , ROFL . /haha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':haha:' /> Actually , you'd be surprised how many people think your talking about Virtual surround sound when you say stereo 3D ( which i hope we all know now is the creation of depth of vision in games through the use of shutter glasses , and has nothing to do with sound ) . Its actually quite sad , because some people think your talking about sound and think , " ,pfft , ive got surround sound , why would i need stereo 3d " , when actually it would go hand in hand with suround sound , like marther and arthur .

Case and point. Nvidia needs to do a better job of marketing the technology.

I think author of this thread is right. I am old fan of Stereo3D. If my customers have dilemma “NVIDIA or ATI” then I am always telling to them that: Stereo3D is "The ONLY Way It's Meant To Be Played" because people have two eyes (and that ATI cards are made for Cyclops :) ). From my experience people are MUCH MORE impressed and exited from Stereo3D demonstration than SLI. I am always pointing out that ATI cards are morally obsolete because lack of Stereo3D support.

I think that NVIDIA is just wasting their opportunity here. It’s like to have a flying car in your backyard (like one from “Back to the Future” movie :) ) and won’t show it to others because of “don’t care” attitude. Maybe they are waiting for ATI to release their own “flying car” (then opportunity “to be different” will be lost and it will be fault of marketing team). I think people who are pushing Stereo3D at NVIDIA do same job as Bill Gates at Microsoft.

Now James Cameron and George Lucas are spearheading an effort to get movie theaters around the world to add the capability to exhibit films in 3-D format. NVIDIA can help them with this idea and bring 3D cinema to homes too (DLP projectors and HD-DVD/Blue-Ray are perfect technologies to host 3D content). It will be just plain stupid to waste this oportunity.

I like this one! 14 years later.... - SLI is nowhere near what we hoped for (It's awesome when it works, but 90% of the time it doesn't work out of the box) - Stereo3D in the newest incarnation of 3DVision (1 and 2) is officially dead as well! - Oh 2D/3D Surround is still full of bugs (9 years later its release) and lacking the BASIC functionality. And yeah, RTX! Honestly I love RTX, when done right, but... (DLSS is a SHIT NVIDIA - having to rely on YOUR super duper computer to train the network is just...) But RTX is another "gimmick" that will fade away as well! (like all their TECHNOLOGIES in the past 20 years). How many games support RTX now or in the future ? A few, exactly like it happened with SLI, 3DVision, etc... (Oh and where is that awesome "port" of 3D Vision games to VR that YOU KEPT ON TELLING US ABOUT ?!?!) Raytracing might have a future because AMD and Intel will adopt it, but not because of Nvidia! (Look at Freesync vs Gsync - another proprietary and "royalties paid" feature! Who actually won in the end?!) so... A DECADE AND A HALF later, nothing really changed! Nvidia just releases stuff, to kill it down the line for more generic 4K/8K/20000K pixel density (because it's easier) instead of trying to improve what they already GOT from 3DFX (Stereo) and from AMD (SLI - oh yeah... SLI was invented by AMD in collaboration with Nvidia). I wonder where they STOLE the "RTX" from... 10 years from now... RTX will be another term to look-up on the internet. So, like some guys said... Nvidia cares only about RAW power and throws different things at us as "features" in an attempt to fool us and buy they OVER-PRICED cards. (Sure, they are the king of the GPUs, but come on... the price is ridiculous). Anywho...
