Old S-3D user, have questions about 3D Vision
I did sterescopic gaming a long time ago (back on the TNT 2 with the Elsa Revelator drivers) and thought it was utterly fantastic when it worked. I tried Nvidia's XP drivers a few years ago and has some issues with them before they were discontinued. Since then, I have some questions about 3D Vision experienced users could maybe give me some answers on. If any of these have already been answered, my apologies, feel free to refer me to other threads. The search functioning wasn't working for me at the time of the post:

Questions:

1. I enjoy playing many older games. Is it possible to get 3d Vision working with DirectX 7 or 8 games? If that means some sort of 3rd party utility to translate the data into a different protocol or something, that would be fine, but I don't know of any.

2. My big problem with Nvidia's XP stereoscopic drivers was that I couldn't get the kinds of depth values I wanted and still have the game be playable. I like having things pop out of the screen especially and find games much more immersive that way. With Nvidia's old drivers, I found they seemed more geared towards things going back inside the screen. When I tried to push values forward, it would usually cause the HUD to get distorted so badly it would disappear completely from the screen. At the time, Nvidia's drivers claimed to have controls in order to "flatten" 3D data that went too far past a certain depth and was able to make the HUD 2d while keeping the 3D depth. While this was an acceptable solution, it only worked with a small minority of games. Is there any sort of solution to this now? Say I wanted a rocket flying at me to pop a foot out of the screen, would the HUD still have to be sacrificed?

Hi,

I'm not a 3D veteran, only been using 3d vision for a couple of months now, but think i can help.

1. The oldest game ive tried so far is probably Max Payne 2, but i think thats DX9, looking at nvidia's compatibility list though they have some really old games on there (black and white comes to mind) so i would guess that they work fine, maybe someone else can confirm this though.

2. I used the anaglyph glasses first (red/blue lens) and although looked ok i wanted better, i was glad i got the 3d vision kit mainly because just how much you can alter it, you can control depth and pop out and it makes a huge difference, i havent seen any issues with the HUD on all the games ive tried, they sit at screen depth which is fine and not distorted in any way. I have messed around with games using 100% depth and massive pop out which look awesome but because my eyes are still adjusting i tend to play at around 40% depth while gradually increasing.

Be warned though, if you are going to use a 120hz LCD there will be a bit of ghosting along the top of the screen, this cant be helped as its a design limitation with LCD's (although this is debatable) i think DLP's are best.

Hope that helps somewhat?

p.s. i was looking at some of the pics in the extreme pop out thread, some of them are amazing but really hurt my eyes! yet again thats due to me still getting used to it all.

Thanks for the response. I'm currently not on a system I can test the drivers on, but I looked at their compatibility list and couldn't find Black & White, just Black & White 2:

If it can run the original, that one was DirectX 7 and should definitely fit the bill.

I'll also take a look at the popup thread. I can look at the shots in anaglyph and it should tell me what I want to know regarding the HUD.
