I am playing it using 3D compatibility, but my question/comment is probably more generalized. Anyway, it seems to me that textures and the overall appearance are not crisp at all. It just looks to me to be too bland and too soft for lack of a better description. Is there a certain setting or adjustment that might change this?

Disable that crappy CA = Chromatic Abberation :)
CA, is one more to the disable ASAP before playing, in the same category as Motion Blur + Depth of Field as I really hate em all!!
Is that really what it is called? I just made a cursory glance at the settings before I started playing the game. Does it have a major effect on the appearance?

And depth of field... if you are playing in 3D, that would be completely unnecessary, wouldn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that works by slightly blurring objects in the distance greater or less as you move around? BTW, thanks for the tips!

You might try adding SweetFX to it to change the color palette.
And I think you might be seeing the film grain setting as well. Film grain softens it and makes film like, and I had to lower that when testing in 3D.
Or SweetFX to sharpen images too? For my taste, the colors all seem to be pastel-like which for a game like this works against the mood bigtime. If I can use this tool to make it approach how the Dead Space series looked, I'll be a happy camper. Never heard of it 'till now, but I will get it and check it out.

Read here and you can clearly see what a load of crap it is, one more stupid thing the devs have started to implement!
So disable that as it blurs the picture to hell!
