Alita: Battle Angel - Amazing 3D!
This post might be a bit out of place since it's about a movie and not a game, But since almost everyone that visits this forum is a 3D enthusiast i figured it was relevant. Anyhow... I saw Alita:Battle Angel last night at the IMAX 3D and was blown away. I've been looking forward to it for quite a while. I've been a huge fan of the Manga and the OVA since I first discovered them back in the 90's. James Cameron bought the rights to make a movie back in 2000 and I've been waiting for him to make the film since then. He originally planned on making a trilogy but the technology to make the film the way he envisioned it wasn't available yet. So he decided to create Avatar first in order to pioneer the motion capture tech and 3D that he intended to use later in Alita. Unfortunately Avatar did so well that he decided to make 4 more of them so Alita got put on the back burner. At some point Robert Rodriguez approached him and they decided to make the film with Rodriguez directing. Unfortunately critics have been giving the movie pretty mixed reviews. Currently the RT score is hovering at around 60% but the audience score is at 94%. I'm not sure if i've seen that much of a discrepancy before. I'm hoping that it get's enough good word of mouth for more people to watch it and warrant a sequel. Yes, the story was a bit overstuffed and the dialogue wasn't the greatest, but I wasn't expecting a Shakespearean drama. I expected a sci fi story with incredible effects and it delivered in spades. The action set pieces were absolutely incredible. I was swept away to the world of the junkyard for the duration of the film. If you've read the manga or watched the OVA then you're in for a real treat, Rodriguez and company have been incredibly faithful to the source material. Even if you don't know anything about the source material it's still an amazing Sci fi film. Technically it's a marvel, it has hands down some of the best effects I've seen in a film. The performance capture was spot on. The 3D is the best I've seen since avatar, In fact it's even better. None of this should be much of a surprise given the pedigree of the people working on the film, Weta digital and Cameron are at the top of the game as far as effects are concerned. The movie was shot natively in 3D and IMAX (No stupid conversion or post production) so if you can go see it at the IMAX. Do you like eye candy and Incredible 3D? of course you do, otherwise you wouldn't be in this forum so ignore the critics and go watch it.

Thanks for the writeup. Didn't realized it's in the theater already, I'll take my nephew to see it tomorrow.

I was going to live it in 4DX anyway, but James Cameron recommends to feel it (not simply watch) on 4DX: https://www.tridimensional.info/2019/01/espanol-hemos-experimentado-un-cine-4dx-y-es-una-experiencia-inolvidable/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHIM1mR3r94

I read the original Gunnm manga recently (a good version was finally published in my country). Currently starting Gunnm Last Order. I want to watch the movie, but there isn't any 3D cinema near my home, so I'll wait for the 3D blu ray.

I started re-reading them in the 2017 version which is probably the same one you read, they retranslated them in english and spanish, if i'm not mistaken you're from spain (I was born in madrid). To bad you can't see it in 3D at the cinema. I'm lucky enough to have a IMAX Laser 3D cinema in my town, the screen is 19 x 25 meters, fucking incredible.

Watched it yesterday and was pissed to see they still make use of blurry plan. How come James Cameron accept this? Feel free to like and retweet my tweet and hopefully they will notice it (Cameron and Rodriguez).

Saw it. Didn't think the 3D was spectacular. It only looked like it had 3 planes ( a near foreground, a middle focus, and a distant background). stuff in each plane stayed flat to it's own plane. And the near foreground had the blur strain as usual when an object was cut off by the screen boundaries. Enemies looked a little goofy but was still a great movie. Although I think the movie Elysium stole this movie's plot.

Great movie. 3D was exactly like this. with some weak, mostly medium, and a few strong 3D frames. nothing spectacular, with only a few popouts during fighting scenes. I still recommend it, though.

Same, 3D was good but nothing that appealing. Like I have already said 3D conversion are quite impressive now. But indeed reflection are way better in real 3D, I enjoyed the few of them. The best effect in 3D are fog, reflections and ray of light, in fact simply what our brain can't easily understand. In the movie I don't remember been blown away by those. Movie is great, maybe a bit long to find some action. But then it's almost non stop fighting. Hopping for a second one. The end ask for it.

Alita is RTX ON, with a steady FPS of 24.
