Doh, I opened the thread, walked away for an hour and then posted my reply. :)

I can't downgrade unfortunately, I have 460GTXs (and there's only the one release driver so far).

Hmm, it just goes black for me when enable 3d stereo. Peachy.

Try opening your settings file (\My Documents\Starcraft II\variables.txt) and set the 'Height' and 'Width' options to your screen's native resolution. I had to do that to get the game to initially run at all (was getting a black screen that I couldn't even get to Task Manager), but I can't get 3D working regardless.

SC2 used to work fine in 3d, before nvidia released drivers with "support" for it... (all they did is break it)

This was months ago... i have since posted a thread regarding this issue with no reply, and here we are now, at release date with no support.
Makes you wish nvidia had just left it alone.
I'm getting something that looks like this whenever I enable 3d... any ideas? The game rating pops up and everything... switching back to 2d works fine...
This problem was caused by changing the refresh rate from within the in-game options, it somehow causing my setup to revert to the oldschool 'red / blue' style glasses for some reason (I quickly realized this when finally loading up another previously-working game). So ignore that post.... /turned.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':turned:' />

Got my copy of SC2 today and its working OK here too, about the same as the last Beta build I played. Its not perfect by any means but its far from unplayable or totally broken.

Like any games that have the cursor or 3D object icons at 2D or rendered at screen depth, especially with RTS, you have to set Depth to the minimum to get the 2D to line up with the 3D object. After that, just adjust convergence so that the cursor and 2D icons create a single image. It results in a very flat game world but that's the limitation of having cursors/crosshairs at 2D/screen depth with 3D objects. You can't go too far to try and get a toyification effect or you start to break the cursors and UI elements.

Still a few issues I'm sure they will sort out with the official 3D Vision patch, like some lighting and shadow effects only render in one eye. Some objects at wrong depth like they say in the overlay helper, seems most obvious in the cut-scenes.

Screenshots are taken with Nvidia 4xSSAA Override in the NVCP, everything Ultra, still get mostly 60FPS capped per eye even in 3D Vision and GPUs are around 80% utilization each. I expect it may dip some in more intense firefights or online, but I also have that mouse smoothing option enabled which dropped FPS ~10FPS.

Just how can you look at that and say "no problem" those are two views of the same eye.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing that. Those caps are far worse than it even looks on my machine and I still find it not worth using.

I find 2D unit icons too much in RTSs like this.

In the Total war games the town names and mouse curser are 2D but that (to me) seems acceptable, this is because they move with the map etc. The troops themselves have 3D unit icons.

However games like Starcraft 2 and World in Conflict are horrid to look at. The 2D unit icons are far too much of a distraction as they swim around the screen. :(

Bummer huh?

Yeah this is a problem with most RTS games with the 2D icons or mouse cursor, or they're rendered in 3D but at screen depth, not object depth. DoW2 and CoH are other examples of this. We just need games to render the cursor at object depth dynamically like a laser sight or one of those ground reticles you've seen in some games (like where to drop a bomb etc.) but I'm sure this is performance-expensive.

The problems with SC2 are kinda all over the place. The potential is clearly there as they render some things that are normally 2D, in 3D, the problem is they're at the wrong depth. For example, the health bars are actually rendered in 3D, but the problem is they're at screen depth so when you adjust depth and separation, the resulting depth of the health bars are separated in the near-field of view.

Similarly, most of the HUD and UI elements are actually in 3D, like the frame itself, but the problem is they start mis-aligning if you adjust Convergence too much which limits your ability to get a toyification effect at low Depth settings.

I'm confident they'll get it all sorted once the "official" 3D Vision patch comes out, until then you just have to go with low Depth and focused Convergence to get it playable, or play in non-S3D until the patch comes out. My settings work fine, there are no misalignment issues, its just a very flat experience for the most part. There's only a few visual anomalies with lighting/shadows but I think they may even be a result of the SSAA override implementation.
