Can a standalone 3D Blu-ray player play 3D on a 3D monitor?
I'm about to get an Acer GN246HL and NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 so I can play 3D Path of Exile and maybe some other games. I also want to watch 3D Blu-rays. I'm not sure exactly how the 3D works on these monitors, though. Can I use my standalone Blu-ray player's HDMI connection to play 3D Blu-rays on the monitor? Is the 3D a hardware thing, or does the PC need to be running some sort of software to make it work? I'd really rather not buy an external Blu-ray drive to plug into my PC and have to mess around with PC software if I can avoid it.
I figured this would be the best place to ask since pretty much everybody here has at least one 3D monitor. If there's anything else I missed, like maybe the 3D Vision's terrible for watching 3D Blu-rays or something, I'd appreciate a heads-up. I'm pretty much flying blind here.
Thanks!

You can connect a Blu-ray player directly to a 3D Vision monitor via HDMI and watch movies if the monitor has a built-in IR emitter. Unfortunately there are no recent models that have it. Older models that have a built-in emitter are hard to find, see https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1047889/3d-bluray-3d-vision/ Acer GN246HL doesn't have a built-in emitter.

Yes, another option is to run a software Blu-ray player on your PC. The only two that support Blu-ray 3D that I know are PowerDVD and WinDVD. You'll also need a Blu-ray drive for PC. It doesn't have to be external, internal models are also available.

3D Vision is great for watching 3D Blu-rays. I'm using PowerDVD for it. It's a bit buggy, but I can live with it. Note that a free trial version won't work for Blu-ray 3D, you need to buy it.

Thanks for the very detailed response! My hopes were thoroughly dashed. I'll probably end up buying a USB drive (no slot for an internal) and one of those programs. It's not as clean and not as cheap as getting a standalone, but it doesn't sound like there's much of a choice. At least I know what do do now! Thanks again!
