Now that I have a new GPU, I wanted to resume playing this game (I've started it in 2013, lol). The current Helixmod fix doesn't work for me (I get corrupted graphics), and besides, it was an HUD improvement that didn't fix broken effects.
What is fixed:
- Lots of haloing issues (portals, water, fire effects, weapons, mist walls, fog, etc).
- Skybox and similar things now at 100% depth (I'm in the Black Throne Area, so I'll have to check other areas when I finish it).
Extras:
- Convergence presets in keys "1" and "2". You can save new separation and convergence presets with ctrl+F7.
Here is my current fix (28 shaders fixed): https://www.dropbox.com/s/pk6pi4y2qlmw793/Darksiders_3D_fix_1.7z?dl=0
Instructions on how to get it working and avoid annoying judder:
1- Unzip the contents of the file in the "Darksiders" folder (root folder of the game).
2- Copy the "DarksidersPC.exe" file and name the copy as "MassEffect.exe" (if you force AA in Nvidia Inspector, you will have to do it in the Mass Effect profile).
3- Add "MassEffect.exe" to Steam as a non Steam game (don't worry, Steam will keep tracking time for the original game, and achievements I guess).
4- Enter Big Picture mode in Steam.
5- Boot the game through the shortcut that directs to your "MassEffect.exe".
IMPORTANT: if you alt+tab out of the game and then go back, you will get judder.

Hmm.. This is DARKSIDERS 1 right?

Yes, it's the first Darksiders. Without any fix and using the original exe, there are those haloing issues I mentioned in the OP.
I guess the original fix works for you because you use SLI. For the rest of mortals, my fix will be the one to use :p (and for you, if you notice the issues the game has, unless it's something that is automatically fixed with SLI or something).

Hmm.. my laptop doesn't use SLI... very strange... Will make a new check as something is strange here..
I don't think I ever played the game in single GPU mode;) So, I think you are right;)
EDIT: In SLI, Surround game works fine with the original fix. Never had many issues with it ever... but I think I run it on a GTX590 initially (SLI by default).
Don't get me the wrong way or anything;) I am just amazed really;)
EDIT2:
Just checked it on my Laptop (single 880M, Windows10 - no patch and is looking like this):
Are you seeing the same thing?

Still, this is what the blog post says:
Problems not fixed:
1- The HUD renders strangely, but I got around this by finding the texture elements of each crosshair. They are given as much depth as possible before the edges start clipping. One element, a pulsing circle, was left alone because that texture is reused many times.
2- Skyboxes render too shallow. No acceptable solution has been found yet.
3- Various effects do not render identically in both eyes - for example, the swirls around the rim of portals, the swirl around Void Walker on War's arm, fire on flaming skeletons, the chain around War's hand when Abyssal Chain is equipped, and several more.
4- Portals have a rim effect, which renders in only the left eye.
5- Portals show you what is on the other side when you look into them, but the world beyond the portal renders at the wrong depth.
1- With my current fix, the untouched HUD is simply 2D.
2- Fixed (at least in one zone. Let's hope the game uses the same shader for all skyboxes).
3- Fixed.
4- Fixed.
5- The image inside portals is 2D, but I think I won't try changing that.
Example images:
http://u.cubeupload.com/masterotaku/MassEffect008.jpg
http://u.cubeupload.com/masterotaku/MassEffect009.jpg (that ground below was near the camera before)
http://u.cubeupload.com/masterotaku/MassEffect010.jpg
http://u.cubeupload.com/masterotaku/MassEffect005.jpg
If the old fix works for you, try adding my shaders to fix those effects so you can have the improved HUD and crosshairs too.
If you don't see those issues with the old fix, that would be very strange, because the blog post specifies that the issues really exist.
By the way, whenever I use even just 1 modified shader with the original exe file, the graphics become corrupted.

Thanks masterotaku,
I'll try it out later in the evening! Big thank you for all your work!
I was confused as it seems to work for me on any configuration and that puzzled me;)
But if there are people for which the old fix doesn't work and the new one does than that is awesome!!!
You should add it to HelixMod Blog. If you don't want to at least say something in the comments there about the new fix;) as I noticed multiple people have issues;)
Thanks again!

I'll make a new post in the blog once I've visited more areas in the game (my current goal in the game will make me do that). I have visited three and all of them have correct skyboxes, so they use the same shader. There is also a tower mentioned in the comments of the blog post. It seems that I've fixed that too yesterday (and someone else also posted the fixed shader there).
Before posting in the blog, I'll try to do something about crosshairs.
Thanks again!
You're welcome :).
Edit: and now another shader I had to put at depth. 23 vertex shaders now.
Edit 2: found 2 waterfall problems. Fixed. 25 vertex shaders now.

Yep, this fix seems like a worthy addition, thanks.
As a data point, I just tried the Darksiders with no fix, with Win10, single GTX 980, Driver 365.19, and it worked well. The 3D is very good, but there were some noticeable glitches.
The skyboxes were noticeably too close and the crosshair was off. There were occasional effect glitches around portals.
While certainly playable and not annoying, I think our bar for quality has gone up, and this fixes those problems.
As an aside, it's really interesting to me how much more fun I find these old games than I do current AAA stuff. I feel like the industry has lost all it's creativity.

Haha, probably, at least for me. Haloing (double depth in some texcoords) problems are usually very easy to fix (unlike shadows, 2D reflections, etc), and annoying when they aren't fixed.
By the way, I have updated the fix, in case someone didn't see my edits in my previous post. I'll keep updating it as I fix more things.
Edit: and a another shader added. It is lightnings at 100% depth.

After visiting all zones (and getting the Abyssal Armor), I have fixed two more shaders. Now they are 28 in total. The link to the fix has been updated, as always.
There are a very few zones (cathedrals mostly) where some lighting clips at the sides, possibly only in one eye. I haven't fixed that (I don't know if I will be able to do it).
Now I'll experiment with the HUD a bit and see if I can make use of some shaders of the old fix.
Edit: by the way, please someone confirm if it's working. It would be awful if shaders depend on the install location or something. My game is in "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Darksiders", although I've used Steam Mover and it's actually in "I:\Steam Moved\Darksiders".

I have updated the fix in the OP with an optional folder called "HUD shaders" and the debug dll called "debugd3d9.dll" (also, "DX9Settings.ini" has more lines now). In case you need to use it, rename your "d3d9.dll" to something else and rename the "debugd3d9.dll" to "d3d9.dll".
You can try directly copying the files of the "HUD shaders" into the "shaderoverride/vertexshaders" folder, but it's possible that you need to follow the instrunctions of the original blog post (http://helixmod.blogspot.com.es/2012/12/darksiders-2010.html), in the "How to get it working:", starting from step 5 (if you have already renamed the dlls).
Hotkey for HUD depth is number "3" (not the numpad one). By default, the HUD is at screen depth. Not counting screen depth, there are three depth presets. I have also respected the original fix style, so text pops out from the rest of the HUD (the rest of the HUD has a 5% more depth than the text in my fix, unless the depth is 0, obviously).
For crosshair depth, I've also used the same method as the original fix. If you had to change the HUD shaders names, you will have to change the text "[VSE229F6B7]" in the "DX9Setting.ini" to your main HUD shader name ("[VSXXXXXXXX]").
So this is the end of the fix. I'll start preparing the blog post once someone tries the HUD shaders and tells me if they need to be renamed, etc.

Nice nice. It works very well (3 hours gameplay). The last time i played this game was in 2D but in 3D the graphic looks awesome.
I prefer that the HUD is on screen depth. A Perfect fix for me :)
Thanks a lot.

You're welcome :).
Edit: and now another shader I had to put at depth. 23 vertex shaders now.
Edit 2: found 2 waterfall problems. Fixed. 25 vertex shaders now.

I prefer that the HUD is on screen depth. A Perfect fix for me :)
