Problems with 3DTV play
Hi everyone. I'm not sure this is the right forum for the topic, but it seemed appropriate. My laptop is a Dell XPS 17 3D (L702X for technical terms). It came with a Geforce GT 555M, and an integrated IR emitter for stereoscopic 3d. At the moment I bought the computer I wasn't able to afford the NVision glasses, so I went a long while without 3D. Finally I've gained access to a 3d capable TV that came with its own 3d glasses, a Samsung D6500 40" Led 3DTV. It has not been a smooth ride. First, I configured 3dTV play on the TV and set the resolution for 720p, 60 Hz. I turned on Steam and went to Deux Ex: Human Revolution. I was able to play without a hiccup, and it looked awesome. I then tried Alice: Madness Returns, as I've read it looks pretty sweet and I owned it. With stereo 3d activated I can see the two images (without the glasses) being rendered on my screen but as soon as I plug in the HDMI cable to the TV, the stereo 3d is lost, although the option is still active in the menu and the TV is receiving the signal that 3d is being trasmitted as it activates the glasses (sound remains on the computer, strangely, although the port on the TV can receive sound). I haven't found some method to make it work. I gave up and went on to Mirror's Edge. I set the resolution on 1280 x 720 as well, but as soon as I plug in the HDMI cable it goes haywire, with both the TV and the lap's screen going black, and flicking on and off, like they're trying to adjust to the resolution or something. If I unplug the HDMI it goes back to normal, just rendering the stereo 3d on the lap's screen. I really don't have a clue to what's going on. I have the most recent Nvidia drivers Dell has issued on its page for this computer, version 285.77. Can anyone offer any advice? Oh, for the record, 3d movies work just fine through 3DTV play.

Just a slight update. I realized that during my changes in the Nvidia control panel I changed the HDMI mode from audio activated to audio inactive. I put it back in its rightful place and sound now comes form the TV. All other problems remain as stated above.

You can not simply be playing on one screen via Optomized for Geforce and just jump right over into 3DTV Play. Try hooking up the TV, Disable the laptops integrated display. Now try enabling 3DTV Play. Remember, 3DTV Play is designed to work with the "Manufacturers Glasses" not with the Nvidia Glasses. Also make sure you are connecting to the HDMI port that is specified for PC/Gaming, it should turn off some of the Display's post processing and give you less lag.

Mmm...I don't have Nvidia glasses. I only have the ones that came with the Samsung TV. So, to be clear on this. once I connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI port, turn off the laptop's display so the image is only shown on the TV, and only then activate stereo 3D. I'll try that and report back. Also, the TV only has 3 HDMI ports, one is definately not the adequate one since it's also the DVI one (no audio). Another one is also ARC (audio return chanel) and the output from the TV may interfere, though I haven't tested that extensively. THe third on is HDMI only, no special stuff.

Look in your owners manual, you'll more than likely need to rename the HDMI inpute to game or pc, whatever it recommends to reduce input lag.

Hi again. Sorry about the delay in replying. I went on holidays and didn't have access to the 3DTV I'm trying to use so I couldn't try anything until I came back this semester. Anyway, I've tried only displaying the image on the TV and enabling stereo 3d only then, but the problem remains. Neither Mirror's Edge nor Alice Madness Returns are working properly. Deus EX Human Revolution works without a hitch, so I know it's not really a hardware problem. Right now I don't have more 3D games installed so I can't really test with others. I find it odd that when I run either Alice or Mirror's Edge the little box with Nvidia's rating of the 3d effects doesn't come up at all, while in DX:HR it does come up. I feel that somehow 3dTV Play is getting disabled for these two games when the HDMI cable is connected but I have no idea why. According to Nvidia's compatibility list my TV is supported with drivers 310.33, though I'm wary of updating the drivers directly from Nvidia and not through those tested by Dell. Also, I think this may be relevant, the Nvidia control panel shows the 3dvision logo normally. When connected to the TV the 3dtv play logo doesn't appear. Instead, I get a little link telling me that to enjoy the best performance I should gget 3Dtv play. This doesn't make sense since this notebook has integrated 3dvision and therefore is already 3dtvplay compatible, and I also managed to run through the wizard and test screens on my TV

Do you see your D6500 on the supported list here http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dtv-play-system-requirements.html No? Then go here http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2774/~/how-do-i-know-if-3dtv-play-supports-my-3d-tv%3F
Well, I went ahead and installed the very latest (at the time of writing) drivers for the Geforce GT 555M, even if they weren't released on Dell's drivers page for my Laptop. The version of these drives is 310.90. Voilá! Everything works now. Nvidia's Panel now shows the 3dTv Play icon when the TV is plugged in, as well as displaying stereo 3d for all the games mentioned in this thread and also Quantum Conundrum. I hope it someone stumbles onto this thread this info will help them.
