3D Vision replacement battery
  1 / 2
I have a pair of 3D Vision glasses (v1). They were not turning on no matter how long I charged it so I opened them up to see if the battery is alright. It had been discharged well below where it should be and I had to shock it with a high voltage in order to bring it back to a normal level. Unfortunately the battery had already been irreversibly damaged as I could see the charge actively draining on my multi-meter. I used a soldering iron to remove the dead battery from the charging circuit so now I'm left with a pair of glasses with no battery. NVIDIA does not recommend replacing the battery (which in itself is unsurprising), but apparently the reason they give as to why they don't recommend it is because the battery is a "custom design" (see: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2286/~/nvidia-3d-vision---optimizing-battery-life). Does this mean that any old regular LiPo don't work? What kind of LiPo will work? Obviously I don't want a chemical fire to happen near my eye so I want to preceded with caution and make sure I use the right kind of battery.

Well I am an avid diy fixit but in this case I would say just buy a new glasses set.

The links to the batteries in that article are dead, will any LiPo that fits work? I assume I also need to use the original charging protection circuit and not one that comes with the LiPo (if it comes with one)?

Those exact part numbers probably change over time, but something similar will obviously be available from China. You can also no doubt get a larger battery. You definitely want to use the protection circuit that comes on the NVidia battery. I don't think the charging circuit in the glasses works if that is not there.

I'm an idiot. So while disassembling the glasses to install a new LiPo (some 70mah I got off ebay for $3, a little pricey but it came very quickly) I opened up the part that holds the lenses in place (turns out this wasn't even entirely necessary). Due to how I was holding them, the lenses fell out and during the process of putting them back in I broke the ribbon cable holding one of them in. I can't verify that the battery replacement worked by looking at the other lens (I did install the battery before I realized I broke the cable) because that ribbon cable also carried the power. Maybe there is a way to repair it (the glasses should work in theory if I can repair the cable) but I don't have the tools for it. I did get these for free so it's no big loss but I'm disappointed. I found a pair on ebay for $15 so I bought those, but if anybody knows how to repair a ribbon cable I'd like to hear how.

Ouch! that's a bummer. Most of us never close our glasses because that ribbon cable can sometimes fail due to opening and closing them through out the years.

Nope, the 3D Vision 2 glasses do not have this issue because they are hinged at a place behind the electronics.

(that's 6+ years now) ;)) Funny I only had to change the battery on one of the glasses set 2 years ago. The other one is ROCK solid to this date (both battery and internal connections). The 2x3D Vision 2 glasses don't have this problem;) I don't think you can "fix" the broken ribbon, unfortunately :(

I've had one battery die on my oldest glasses, and tried to replace it with a newer one off eBay. There was a seller for awhile who had exact NVidia replacements, but he sent me two that were dead. LiPo only have about a 5 year shelf life, so these were probably sitting around too long. It is possible to fix a ribbon cable connector, but it is painstaking work. You need to have superb soldering skills. Probably not worth the effort unless you are looking for a challenge. Since we can get replacements pretty easily today. Maybe 10 years from now when we are coaxing our gear along and things are rare it will be worth it. There is also Wire Glue, which is conductive glue for 'paint on' fixes: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/b70c/
There you said it :P From all my attempts to fix a flat ribbon cable with soldering about 50% were successful;) The others failures... Really depends on how BIG the ribbon is;) (And you definitely need special "gear" for this - not you average "Soldering Iron") ;)

Also some cables have non-metallic strips, like a paste instead, and cannot be soldered. For these cables, they look to be copper based, so 10 years from now, we should be able to do it. :-> Right now, eBay is definitely the time saver.
