Upgrade From AW2310 to Asus VG278H Worth It? Looking for benefits in ghosting/crosstalk
  1 / 3
Hey guys, looking for your advice.

I have an alienware AW2310 monitor which is great, but looking for less crosstalk. Has anyone upgraded from the Alienware to the Asus, if so, how did it fare. did it meet or exceed expectations?

Also for anyone with the Asus, can you give me any plus's and minues about the monitor. Does it still have the weird backlight bleed problem? how good is lightboost relative to nvidia 3d 1.

I have read every review online, and all the forum posts on this monitor, but without an official measurement of crosstalk its all very subjective, and i need a direct comparrison with aw2310. I really want to know if it is worth the price, and if it will bring greater rewards.

Thanks in advance for your help :-)

No ghosting is games? sounds too good to be true! im guessing it must be a lot better then aw2310, as you would definatly notice a reasonable level of ghosting/crosstalk on that screen with any light source in-game. Thankyou kindly for your input.

+1 for the Asus.

why would you be buying a nvidia kit if your monitor is 'ghost free' in 3d? Sounds like its already a pretty good set up. Also, the emitter is just Infra red (basic tech) so dont see why it would be better to get nvidia kit. Also nvidia kit is USB where as asus does its link via DVI if im not mistaken. Usb is more problematic surely as its not a great speed and can be out of time etc. I'd wager it would make no difference either way ;-)

vg278h does have some degree of ghosting, especially at the top of the screen, which is normal. it's not bothersome however and once immersed in the game you have to look for the ghosting to notice it.

Are you new to 3d or is this monitor an upgrade? If the latter, what did you upgrade from and how does lightboost and ghosting compare between monitors?

But you still havnt answerd, why are you looking to buy it if your asus is already so good? If its just to make the video look better, im sure it wont. Most movies are post production 3d, so look like 3 2d planes at different distances (backround forground etc) and usually only have minimal depth.

Other then videos looking bad (which im sure is becuase of the source not monitor) is there any other reasons your looking to get these 3d glasess.

Hiya, got your PM about this thread and would be happy to give my thoughts on the upgrade.

Crosstalk - significantly improved but not completely eliminated and vastly improved by turning down Contrast into the 50-60 range. You will still see some crosstalk in the worst-case overlapping light/dark scenes but its only really bad in that top 1-2" where the AW2310 might extend down to the top 1/3 of the screen and even the bottom portions of the screen.

Size - HUGE difference of course. If you set the Asus at the same distance as your AW, you'll see a massive improvement in terms of FOV and immersion. You'll get same or better results in 3D to an HDTV at similar FOV without the nasty aliasing/checkerboard or pixelation/interpolation results. For anyone who wants to experience 3D Vision in its full glory and doesn't mind a desktop set-up, 27" 1080p is the way to go. Also, for normal desktop usage, the larger pixel size and higher pitch is probably a benefit as text and icons are easier to read without noticeable aliasing or blocky pixelization.

Backlight/Bleed - Much better in every aspect compared to the AW. I thought the AW was too bright and it can be in normal desktop usage, but the Asus puts it to shame. I've reduced the brightness to 0 on the Asus and its still extremely bright in normal desktop usage. In 3D, I didn't realize how much darker the AW was in 3D until I saw the Asus. Not only is the 3D image brighter, but the ambient light that hits your eye is improved as well due to LightBoost. Backlight is much better than the AW, which had a noticeable bleed at the top. The Asus must have worked out its backlight issues because I never got the oval shape issue, only a slight hotspot in the middle that has since gone away.

Pixel shifting/uniformity/build quality - Much less pixel shifting or crawling and less of that "pink" off coloration at off angles that can be normal with TN panels. This panel further closes the gap between IPS and VA panels in terms of desktop usage and color reproduction. Build quality is a bit lower than the AW on the housing, buttons, stand, but the panel itself is without a doubt much better on the Asus. No dead pixels, which was somewhat of a concern with Newegg's dead pixel policy (up to 6) compared to others like Dell (no dead pixels), but this is still going to be luck of the draw.

Quirks - the built-in emitter seems more sensitive to software/game/driver desynch issues than the external 3D Vision emitter, so if the game or app doesn't perfectly destroy the 3D service upon exit, the emitter will stay on meaning ultra-bright desktop backlight. The workaround to this is to launch the 3D Vision test app and close it. Also some games won't kick the emitter on but will display stereo images, like Diablo 3. The workaround for me has been to alt-tab (may take 2-3x) or change from fullscreen to windowed and back.

3D Vision 1 to 2 - The main difference here is in the glasses, as the benefits of LightBoost are compatible with 3DV1 glasses as well. I do like the new V2 glasses more than the V1 glasses but the common complaints are valid. I made a few slight non-permanent mods to the V2 glasses to improve them. I put some blue painter's tape on the right eye frame to block the glare from the glossy finish. I also added some sound dampening foam to each arm of the glasses to improve comfort over time, especially with headphones. I do wish the glasses increased the lens vertically more than horizontally as I don't notice the "20% larger" surface area much.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with my purchase and will have to say it exceeds my expectations. Price is still pretty high, but I got it for ~$600 which is about what I'm normally willing to pay for high-end desktop monitors. I paid similar for my 1st gen 24" 1920x1200 SPVA and also paid about the same for my AW2310 + 3D Vision Kit when it first came out, and so far I'm at least as impressed with the Asus. I believe Amazon has since dropped their price on the Asus to $600.

Hope that helps, lmk if there's any additional detail or clarification needed.

Wow, i mean seriously, there needs to a be a reputation thing on Nvidia forum, as youd get my thumbs up. Thankyou so very much for your extremely detailed account, really 100x more then i expected. Ive put in an order and will comment on here with my own comparisons. As for the getting stuck in 3D mode, to be honest with the last few sets of drivers my alienware does that as well. I think Nvidia may have bodged up the release 3d code a few revisions ago.

Many thanks again!

Ok here's a qustion for you, do you know for sure that the internal IR emitter is buggy, or is it just a hunch? I was going to sell my old 3d kit, but now im not so sure. I will do some testing beforehand to see the difference. The only bug that youve listed that i know will irk me is having to go fullscreen then windowed etc a few times, is that definatly not a bug of nvidia in diablo?

Thanks again for any response.

I had 3 AW2310's in surround and one of them died so I ebay'd the other two and bought the Asus. I am really happy I did because it is a great upgrade. Before the AW2310's I was gaming on the 30' Dell high def @2560x1600, so I was used to having a pretty large FOV and it was a bit tough for me to go down to a 23' monitor (it was worth it to game in 3D). Surround worked good with a lot of games but some of my favorites didn't work at all and some only sort of worked. I also was constantly having to modify config files to get games to work, which isn't a huge deal, but it is nice to be able to just adjust graphics settings and play.

So to me, the 1 Asus VG278H is better than 3 AW2310's in surround. Brighter, more FOV, and noticably less ghosting.

As far as the emitter staying on and the screen staying dark when exiting a game, I just open internet explorer and then close it and that turns off the emitter and the screen goes bright again. Every game I have played on it has turned on the emitter, so I haven't had to do any Alt+tabbing to get it to turn on (Diablo 3 included). I still have my emitter just in case, but haven't had to use it yet 'knock on wood'.

I read some forum posts regarding bad light bleeding issues but I haven't had any issues with mine. I would say the light bleeding is very comparable to the AW2310's.

Mmm, all remaining doubts have been extinguished. I would put my money on the 3D getting locked on or not turning on as driver bugs, glad your not experiancing it though. The brightness thing really intrigues me. Firstly i just wanted the screen to help lower ghosting levels, extra screen size was a nice bonus... But looking at responses and reviews it seems like the brightness really might be impressive. Some scenes on the alienware are sooo dark that you cant see all the different shades of black like when in 2d meaning a lot of lost detail. Cant wait to report, its the jubillee right now in UK so it wont be posted to minimum wednesday, hopefully will be here by week monday at the latest. Will defiantly be sharing my experience for the benefit of anyone else looking to upgrade.

Thanks for your input.

P.s. the fov thing... Lol, yeah when in 3d i have max depth and put my screen inches away from my nose...ok maybe not that close, but i try to make it as much of my fov as possible. With max depth (or as close to it as possible to achive infinite distance point) its really like being in another world sometimes, so more screen = more immersion... My wife will never forgive me!!! Ill just tell her the screens for music production /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
