My rig supports 3D Vision but so many of the games I play don't. So I give up on it for long periods of time, until a visually amazing game comes along. Then I reinstall the drivers only to find it's not supported and Helix hasn't patched it yet.
So what is the current state of 3D Vision support by developers? Have they given up on it? Reminds me of when PhysX first came out.

I think you've answered your own question. Generally, it's completely unsupported by developers and I don't think that will change.
The latest tomb raider supports 3d, Frozenbyte used to. That's about it, since GTAV!
However, we are still blessed with talented shaderhackers and universal fixes.
I'm a bit confused though, because this has been the situation for at least a couple of years now.
Nvidia are still supporting it at the driver and profile level, but for some time we've been relying on 3rd party fixes.
Aren't the 3d drivers installed by default anyway? Or are you talking about plugging your emitter in? In any case, the clear advice is to check for a fix first.

GTX 1070 SLI, I7-6700k ~ 4.4Ghz, 3x BenQ XL2420T, BenQ TK800, LG 55EG960V (3D OLED), Samsung 850 EVO SSD, Crucial M4 SSD, 3D vision kit, Xpand x104 glasses, Corsair HX1000i, Win 10 pro 64/Win 7 64https://www.3dmark.com/fs/9529310
I suppose I was being rhetorical, but honestly was hoping to hear my experience wasn't typical.
Re. the drivers, I'll specifically disable 3D Vision to keep my emitter from flashing and to avoid unsupported games triggering 3D mode. For a while, games would trigger 3D in red-blue anaglyph. Sometimes I'd even uninstall or just not install the 3D Vision driver, installing the video driver only.

Oh right, I see. Unfortunately I think that's the way it is for the forseeable future.
As a person with a relatively simple view on things, I think the only reason the latest tomb raider supports 3d is because it's built into the engine. I think there is literally 0 incentive for anyone to natively support 3d so we are left feeding on crumbs basically.
In an era where games are mainly 3d polygons (I show my age there) I still wonder why more games don't just 'work' in 3d anyway. I think it's mainly down to shortcuts in the code, either to optimize performance or because certain things like HUDs are generally always on top, so people don't consider any Z-axis issues to be of any importance for 2d gamers.
I know they are two different things, but I still hold out hope that VR will assist us because it will force developers to consider how things will actually look in stereoscopic vision.

Some times developers just get it right by a fluke too. The path of exiles devs exact words were. "I guess we just coded our assets properly."
Sadly they have since broken the game.

Coding the assets properly has very little to do with 3D Vision unless they are specifically supporting 3D Vision - a more accurate statement would be "I guess they limited their graphical effects to things the 3D Vision automatic driver could handle".
