It looks like there is a way to do it with video at least ...

The same 'technique' looks like it could be applied using photo editing software on an anaglyph image ... but I have yet to try it.
After messing around with it a little using Gimp and separating the channels, I'm pretty surprised at the results ... obviously it works better on some images more so than others, compression/artifacting being an issue. I haven't had any luck with getting colors to look good at all ... anaglyph, compression, decent depth/separation really kills any chance of saving the colors. But you can for the most part get some pretty decent 3D B&Ws out of them ...

Nice ones!
I once tried this with a very simple anaglyph image from a comic: Rocketeer mtbs3d. Though the original image is missing, the result can still be viewed. The technique is the same as above.

Stereo PhotoMaker will also do this conversion directly, from any format to any other format.
You do a special Open as Stereo, and choose the color anaglyph option.

Nice! Funny I completely missed that when I was poking around in there earlier, on my 2D laptop stereo images are just associated with StereoPhotoMaker so I can easily view them crosseyed(Open and hit X) so I never actually used the 'Open Stereo Image' dialog. I was looking for open 'Anaglyph' image ... Lol. Nice to see it handles the color(better off opening as gray) just as badly as doing it manually. :)
