Hi all, another 3D Vision fan here :-)...So I currently have an Asus PG278Q and am wanting an upgrade to something better. I love sim racing, so 3D Vision is just perfect for me. I've thought about a 3D Vision surround setup by buying another two PG278Q's. So I have a few questions.
1) If I understand it correctly, and forgetting about performance for a second, can my single 980ti drive the three displays? (My GPU has 3 DisplayPort connections).
2) If single GPU works, would a 1080gtx be sufficient to drive 3 of these 1440p displays in 3D Vision surround? I'm not too fussy about FPS as long as things are playable (I mostly play Assetto Corsa, Raceroom Experience, Automobilista and a bit of Wreckfest which is crazy fun in 3D).
3) I've also considered going down the Ultrawide screen route with the Asus PG34 as it would cost about the same as two additional PG27's. I realise 3D Vision is not supported on ultrawides, but would the extra screen width and lack of bezels compensate in any way for sim racing?
Thanks and some good news that Asus has just released a new 24" monitor (pg248q) with 3d Vision support, so who says the tech is dead!

Starting with the GTX 680, surround + an accessory monitor has been possible on a single GPU.

For 21:9, try the resolution on your current monitor and see if you like it first. I'd recommend 3D>2D though.

Sorry to say You are unfortunately dreaming if you think to run three of those monitors in 3dvision on a single 980ti in fact depending on your expectations SLI will be a stretch too.
Yes, it will physically work, but if you will find it enjoyable at all will be another question. I dont think it will be very playable.
I doubt a 1080 will be sufficient either. Maybe 1080 SLI but I am sure there will be some sacrifices even then.
1440p is a really significant jump up from 1080p. I was previously a 1080p surround user, and I had to turn the graphics settings right down to get satisfactory performance even on my rig. (Dual Titan X). I played alot of Dirt rally in surround and could achieve 45 to 60 fps at good settings, but I just gave up on the thought of surround for now in 1440p and upgraded to a single Asus PG278Q.
Personally I am a sticker for frame rate, though I need over 45fps at least, and I am also a bit of a graphics whore. I also suffer from motion sickness so that's a factor for me, but you will be struggling to get 30 fps with anything close to decent settings in 1440p 3d surround and you will need SLI. Once you are hitting below 30 fps is it really worth it? Especially in light of the graphics settings you will have to run.
I think fps is pretty important in racing sim games. As it stands my current setup is definitely giving both my titans a workout they are only driving one of these things...
Yes you can run at a lower resolution but these monitors look so bad at anything under their native resolution the image really starts to look blurry. You would be better off with just having three native 1080p displays at that point.
That said. I am going to buy two more of these monitors for the future, my next upgrade will likely be 1080 ti SLI. (I assume it's coming) I do want to go to surround again sometime I hope in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the replies guys, very much appreciated. I definitely wasn't expecting to run 3 displays off a 980ti, just wasn't sure if it was technically possible. I have a fixed upgrade budget, so just trying to weigh up my options but now I have a clearer picture of what is possible.

Don't even think about going 3D Surround without SLI. Is simply NOT worth it.
3D Surround SHOULD only work in SLI for obvious performance reasons;)
Technically is possible to run 3 display from one GPU, but the result will be like trying to use the Intel GPU on a single screen to play a game. You'll get framerates so low that you will believe you are looking at at slideshow.
Take into consideration that 3D Surrouns at 5760x1080 is basically rendering that resolution TWO times (one time for each eye). So you definitely need SLI and always TOP of the LINE GPUs to make Surround work GOOD.
For example with my config (see below) I can get Witcher 3 to run at 30-40FPS in 3D Surround @ 5760x1080 with almost all the settings set to max.
Is still worth it in my opinion;)

I have to lower grass distance in The Witcher 3 to get 60fps per eye at 1920x1080 with my GTX 1080 (even then, in some places the GPU is at its limit or delivering a bit less than 60fps, not counting CPU limited scenarios in cities), and I usually get between 40 and 45 fps at 2560x1440 (GPU usage in this game doesn't scale 1:1 with resolution).
Now imagine what you would need for 7680x1440 at 60fps in 3D. Three 1080Ti at least :p.

Did you take consideration about VR?
I think it's from far the best thing about simulation, 3D Vision can't fight against VR (excluding the dual projection) on this immersion fight against VR in sim.
In fact, even with this you will still be short on performance.
Some people play project cars:

Curious too D-Man11 about to know if a dedicated PhysX will help for a better minimum fps.

Worst advice EVER mate. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.
You can't ever compare VR with one Screen let alone 3D Surround... but here he have people who give "advice" based on what they believe not what they know to be FACT. So, please refrain yourself from things like this in the future?:)
3D Surround is way better than what one screen can offer and what VR can offer in the current
implementation. Clearly, you haven't seen it or used it... Or even compared the two.
Also, I can't see how VR can compare to Surround mate. Just compare the resolutions alone and you will notice you are talking bollocks...
Just because you need POWERFUL Hardware doesn't mean is "DEAD going forward". If you have the money to spend on 3 IDENTICAL 3D Monitors surely you can buy another GPU for SLI. How is that Dead? Support is actually better than Single Screen SLI for that matter...but of course you don't know, because you don't have/use it...
Everyone who've seen/used 3D Surround before can say the same thing. The only downside is that it requires a lot of GPU POWER and the occasional Surround/Eyefinity game-specific-fix here and there, but this lately seems to be lesser and lesser...

The immersion of VR in sim games can't be beaten, even if the actual VR resolution and picture quality is FAR from 3D surround, i concede that to you.
It's not the same to be inside the game than looking at the limited size of one or multiple monitors due to the fact that you have a limited vertical size of screen that don't englobe all your view like VR do.
Only a setup like The_Nephilim can be better.
You can't have something as immersive than that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDn_dyc9jns&feature=youtu.be

OK All,
Lets calm down and I think both of you all made your points. now Whaty I think..
I think both have there place and 1 thing is sure you can play more games currently with a Surround setup the the VR Setup lack of Support for the format as it is a new emerging technology I am sure that will change..
I have not yes seen a VR unit and never seen any implematation of it so I can comment fully on that but both have there drawbacks and plusses..
I like the fact that the VR is 3D but not being able to see the real world would not be good for me.. I like accessing keys..
3D surround is Awesome as far as I am concerned in any form.. why have 1 when you can buy 3 for triple the price ;)
VR is still in its infancy and what I find funny the biggest complaint about 3D when it came out was I have to wear those dumb glasses. And even funnier now they want people to wear that enormous headset I just don't see it taking off..
If people did not want to wear tiny low weight glasses vs that headset I am wondering what most people where thinking back then.. seems most don't mind wearing that headset now????
I just hope some new 3D setup comes down the pike soon maybe VR will help it along and push some new technology out there.. but ultimately it will be up to the owners of said corporations and I think I hear the guy at NVidia say it saddens his heart to see such a drop in 3D Enthusism..
I would like to see some 3D 4K NVidia ready Projectors come out but I don't think it will ever happen.. thing is most know it may be a while sao the community has banded together and came out with a lot of fixes for newer 3D Games..
I just wish they would open source 3D or something and make it less proprietary and more set standards which did not help 3D at all.. The total confusion on 3D was and has always been the weak link..
I myself love my setup and 2 Projectors with a wide fov is awesome.. I wish I could make a Sphere video booth.. but 2 Projectors is enough to give some very good immersion..
Lets not argue both technologys have there place in my book and I am glad the community came together to push 3D further then nVida wanted to support it..

If you just dabble in racing sims, you can get away with a VR setup. The immersion is amazing, and you really feel like you are there.
However, if you are at all competitive, you are going to be losing every race because you simply can't see well enough. VR headset are too blurry, too low res to allow you to drive properly.
As near as I can tell this is similar to mouse-and-keyboard players going up against the console players. It can be done, but the console players get slaughtered.
OP seems like he's serious about his sims. I'd strongly discourage you from going with VR until you try it yourself. Surround is still the killer approach for racing sims because of the resolution and clarity.
I'm less sure if 3D is absolutely necessary for the serious racer, but I think this will in fact improve your abilities by being able to tell exactly where the apex is. That is probably countered somewhat by lower frame rates however.

I think it's from far the best thing about simulation, 3D Vision can't fight against VR (excluding the dual projection) on this immersion fight against VR in sim.
In fact, even with this you will still be short on performance.

You can't have something as immersive than that: ;feature=youtu.be
Lets calm down and I think both of you all made your points. now Whaty I think..
