3D Vision resolution limitaions info thread 720p60 max for 3DTV Play?!?
  1 / 2
Trying to patch together enough information to make a smart decision regarding a 3d Vision purchase can be difficult. I wanted to break down some of the common questions asked if you're considering getting into 3D.

There are two official methods for using 3D with an nVidia graphics setup "3D Vision" and "3DTV Play"

3DTV Play

This is an extra piece of software which allows 3D Vision to be used on non-3d Vision compatible displays.

If you don't already have a 3D Vision IR emitter hooked up to your PC, you must pay a one time $40 licensing fee to enable 3DTV Play on your system.

3DTV Play is especially handy to give you the ability to use your HDMI v1.4 equipped HDTV (and the TV's matching 3D glasses) to use 3D Vision capabilities.

There are resolution limitations with 3DTV Play, either 720p @ 60Hz (for gaming) or 1080p @ 24Hz (for movie watching).

3DTV Play is currently limited to HDMI frame packing 3D mode, despite the fact that HDMI and many HDTVs support other 3D modes.

The main cause of the resolution limitations is the HDMI v1.4 cable, which does not support high enough bandwidth for 1080p @ 60Hz.

You can check the list of compatible displays here.

* note - There are many other displays that can be used with 3DTV Play unofficially, if you're up for using 3rd party software & tweaking/modding.
3DVision

This is the original implementation and allows for full 1080p @ 60fps

This will only officially work with "3D Vision" stamped HW....nothing else.

"3D Vision Surround" provides support for up to 3 identical monitors for a more immersive experience.

The only large displays that are 3D Vision compatible are the Mitsubishi DLP rear projection HDTVs, and I cannot seem to figure out whether or not they actually support 1080p @ 60Hz.

I believe the Mitsubishi TVs only have HDMI connectors (leading me to the conclusion they would also be resolution limited), but I cannot seem to dig up this information :-/

All the 3D Vision monitors currently on the market support 1080p @ 60Hz via a dual-link-DVI cable.

Some upcoming monitors with a DisplayPort will also have compatibility.

3DVision will game at 1080p@30hz on HDMI 1.3 TVs that support checkerboard, such as Mitsubishi and Samsung DLPs.

You can view the list of compatible displays here.

* note - There are many other displays that can be used with 3D Vision unofficially, if you're up for using 3rd party software & tweaking/modding.
Now that you're armed with that information, you should be able to make a much more informed decision on your purchase, but feel free to ask questions if any come up.

Please let me know if any of the information here is incorrect or incomplete, I will update this post if needed :)

You've left out the fact that 3DVision will game at 1080p@30hz on HDMI 1.3 TVs that support checkerboard, such as Mitsubishi and Samsung DLPs. They removed this feature in 3DTV Play because they did not want the end user to play the way it's meant to be played.

Those TV's aren't even made anymore so no need to include it. It just adds to confusion for the consumer.

3D Vision is a completely different 3D driver than 3DTV Play, one is not a "form" of the other. It's like saying an airplane is a different form of a speedboat.
Also, get rid of the 'list of compatible displays' link. It's worse than useless because it is inaccurate and incomplete. It deceives the unsuspecting into thinking that any TV not on the list is not supported, whereas many TVs not on the list work perfectly. This in turn has lead to people buying the wrong TV as many have learned the hard way.

@ Bobeggy...thanks, I had been wondering.

@ almostinsane...I'll note that, but not remove them for clarity.

@ roller11...3DTV Play is more of a plug-in for 3D Vision, enabling it to work on non 3DVision displays....it is not a driver. Do you have a better list? If so LMK, so I can link it instead.

The point I was making is that newer sets that still support checkerboard (and side-by-side) are capable of gaming at 1080p@30hz. 3DTV Play is not. 3DTV Play does not support the best modes many new TVs have for gaming.
Heck, nvidia might even remove support for color in their next release. It sure is easier for the consumer not to have to fiddle with those pesky hue and color controls on their TVs. Black and white is the new way it's meant to be played.

I think whats most annoying to me, being a passive TV user, is the lack of support for interleaved output.
It is the best output mode for a passive TV.

Even more bewildering is that interleaved support is already built into the 3D Vision driver. No work needs to be done on NVidia's part for it to work on any passive TV that supports 1080p.

And it meets they're criteria that it require no user intervention (on the TV) to turn it on.

3DTV Play is not a 'plug-in' for 3D Vision. They are completely different programs unrelated to each other. By telling people they are sorta the same, you only add to the confusion.

Except for the fact that 3D Vision runs the setup programs, test programs and the screenshots without 3DTV Play installed? Except for that little, bitty, tiny-winy detail?

46" Samsung ES7500 3DTV (checkerboard, high FOV as desktop monitor, highly recommend!) - Metro 2033 3D PNG screens - Metro LL filter realism mod - Flugan's Deus Ex:HR Depth changers - Nvidia tech support online form - Nvidia support: 1-800-797-6530

Right, you get either the 3D Vision set up wizard *OR* the 3DTV Play set up wizard, proving they are different programs. What's the mystery?

So I can install 3DTV Play without 3D Vision already installed?

edit - I updated the OP with some passive TV modes I found thanks to chiz /thanks.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thanks:' />

Sorry if it was unclear in the other post, but it was meant to indicate *ALL* 3D technologies that are limited to HDMI 1.4 output and rely on 3DTV Play are limited to frame packing output and those listed resolutions and refresh rates. In simpler terms, 3DTV Play only supports HDMI frame packing as of right now even though HDMI and some HDTVs support other 3D modes.

Nope, looks good from what I've seen and also covers the blanket disclaimer that there may be fringe loopholes and unofficial workarounds to get 3D Vision/3DTV Play to work on unsupported displays. Good idea to cover all the bases in one spot in case anyone googles Nvidia 3D and stumbles upon this thread. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
