Hello,
I'm considering building a new rig for Witcher 3 providing it supports 3D Vision. I used the VG278H for Witcher 2 and it was the best gaming experience I've had in my 30 years of playing. So good, I have little interest in playing 2d games.
The reviews on the H5360 sound great. It appears that for the lose of a little resolution you gain considerable immersion thru a better 3d experience. I always found myself trying to sit closer to my monitor but some say the further back you sit the more pronounced the 3d effect become? Would love to hear from some who have used both especially with Witcher 2. Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't be buying a new rig for Witcher 3 if I were you.
The devs have said their "recommended" specs will only get 30fps. I seriously doubt it will support 3D out of the box, and if it does I can't imagine you'll get playable framerates, if their statements are accurate. This is definitely a case of wait-and-see.

I can't speak to the vg278h, but I use an Acer H5360 as my primary stereo gaming output. I've used it for 3 years now, and still find it laugh-out-loud awesome. I do have a vg248qe, but find it to be a marginal 3D experience because of the ghosting.
The idea of sitting farther back probably comes from movies where you have no control over separation or convergence, so the only way you can affect it is by seat position. For monitor/projector when gaming, we have direct control, so I'd just dial up what you like.
Relatively speaking, as long as the display is filling the same percentage of your field of view, it will be about the same. Assuming you don't get screen door effects, or can see individual pixels while in 3D.
For the projector though, there is an intangible aspect there I have not been able to quantify where it is substantially more immersive and fun than my monitor, even outside of the ghosting. I suspect this has to do with relative size cues, where the projector adds volume or presence or something because it's about the right size. When the Alien chases me around Sevastopol, it's life size, and scary.
The other aspect of the projector is that pop-out effects work better for me. On my monitor they are interesting, but not compelling. On my H5360 they pop out into the room, and are life size, so they really grab my attention.
In terms of resolution, in 3D, we get twice as many pixels as 720p, and I can't see the pixels when in 3D mode. In 2D mode I can.
As Pirate notes, I would wait and see on Witcher 3, but if you wanted an H5360, I can attest that other games will work extremely well there.

Yeah, In terms of the actual 3D setup I can also vouch for a projector. I have a VG278H, and it's great - but I definitely feel the projector (BenQ W1070 for me) adds another level to the immersion factor.

I believe the way the 3D objects appear to go back into the screen when you move back is from the size depth cue telling your brain the object is further back. Which would mean the size cue is pretty damn powerful. I was surprised how much depth the vg278H had when i first tried it going from my 46" 3DTV with its bigger FOV and thus large object size.
This also mean Nvidia could potentially add further depth by shrinking objects proportionally based on distance from your view. Maybe i should create a new thread for this, im still not sure im even right.

I've had Many 3D projectors and still own the Acer 5360, and I prefer playing on a monitor.
I CANT get over the low resolution look of 720p on the Acer, and I don't like the colours I get in 3D when using DLP projectors, and yes I've tried calibrating them. The visual downgrade to me is not worth the size difference, and that's why I went back to me Benq 24" monitor, and then bought two more for surround.
My main display is a projector. I currently use the Sony 4K VW300es projector as my primary display, and it's awesome, but I've been using projectors since I was born. lol. The wow factor is not there for me, and a first timer using a projector for gaming may going bonkers for it, crappy visual fidelity and all.
I've done tests where I switched from the Benq to the Acer within a few mintues of each other, and the Acer shows much more refined details such as textures, etc. The Acer lacks detail, is less bright, has worse colours, but it's ghost free (awesome) and HUGE.
Basically it's kinda like going from Last of Us PS3 to the Remastered version on PS4 (graphics wise)
Graphics fidelity vs. size. you choose, and I recommend you try a projector if possible, but if you can't then you should decide from what I've said above.

Great info thanks!
So Pirate, you have the VG278H in full 1080p but you still prefer the BenQ W1070 at 720? Have you played Witcher 2 on it?
I agree W3 is a wait and see, especially since I'm not as impressed with the recent demos.
BTW The Witcher 3 is Nvidia's latest game bundle for GTX 960, 970 and 980.

Funny you should ask, Witcher 2 is the game I'm playing on it at the moment - and it looks great. The overall projector experience is definitely my preferred option, though if I were playing a twitch-shooter I'd generally stick with the monitor. In terms of the overall experience though, I find the projector to be the best option - it also helps that my surround sound setup is connected via the projector, which adds to the immersion significantly.
