Stereo 3D on 1080p rear projectors What is the best way to "go bigsceen"?
Hello everyone,
I am new to the community so thanks for reading this. I have recently become a 3D junkie after purchasing the eDimensional setup with the wireless glasses/dongle and the 3Dplus 2.0 2d to 3d conversion software. I don't play games but really enjoy the stereo effect with DVD's. I like it so much in fact that I'm thinking of going for broke and getting the $450 crystal eyes setup and the $300 Tridef dvd converter software.
Anyway, my question is basically am I stuck using my CRT to use these stereo features or can I purchase a bigsceen hdtv and use it. I've read that LCD's are no-go but what about DLP? Specifically, something like the samsung or sony 61" 1080p setups? If these HDTV's would work, how could you hook it up. The eDimensional setup only has a VGA out and I think the DLP TV's only accept DVI or HDMI in. Has anyone used a DLP with the stereo 3D? Some info would be appreciated.
Also, I recently purchased a new core 2 duo with and a quadro FX1400 card. Does this help or hurt using the HDTV's? Finally, what about front projectors?
So, in a nutshell, I guess I'm basically asking what is the best stereo 3D "bang for the buck" solution in "going bigsceen" and getting away from the desktop CRT? Is the refresh rates on the DLP's a problem? Alright, I'll stop with the questions now.

There are long threads about this very thing. The bottom line is, some peojectors work, some donw. There is a list somwhere of the ones tested to work.
You will have to hack the dongle. I remember slashing open a cable and soldering the signal cable onto it. Thje DVI cable was ruined, adn there is probably a better way of doing it, but it can be done. What the pins were, I can't remember.
Look into the stereovision.net forums and the stereo3d.com forums. This topic is dicussed in detail there.

Windows 10 64-bit, Intel 7700K @ 5.1GHz, 16GB 3600MHz CL15 DDR4 RAM, 2x GTX 1080 SLI, Asus Maximus IX Hero, Sound Blaster ZxR, PCIe Quad SSD, Oculus Rift CV1, DLP Link PGD-150 glasses, ViewSonic PJD6531w 3D DLP Projector @ 1280x800 120Hz native / 2560x1600 120Hz DSR 3D Gaming.
RAGEdemon, I'm back. I was looking through some of the threads on stereovision.net and noticed that you are particularly active in these. I noticed that at one point you owned the z800 HMD visor. Getting back to the initial theme of the present topic, how does the HMD option stack up to the widescreen DLP or front projection systems?
My initial naive impression is that the shutterglasses and CRT/HDTV setup would be preferable simply because you could adjust your viewing range and angle rather than being stuck in the HMD at a fixed viewing distance. Am I wrong in thinking that this is a limitation of the HMD option? Again, I'm new to the whole stereo 3D world. However, I do have the money for the optimal setup and that's why I am trying to get more info before I go out and drop $500 on the crystal eyes setup only to learn that the HMD is a better option.
Thanks again guys.
By the way, there's an active auction on ebay right now for the z800 visor:

By the way, there's an active auction on ebay right now for the z800 visor:
In my opinion, a DLP projector is the best option. Firstly, you can watch all your movies, TV shows, and play games on the big screen. Second, In My Opinion, with a large screen and shutter glasses producing a ghostless image, I prefer a DLP over the z800. Let me explain why.
It is true that the z800 has excellent brightness and immersion, and even head tracking. But the simple fact is you feel as though you are sitting in front of a 22" monitor. The resolution is only 800x600, and even with FSAA, the beautiful textures just can't be appreciated in that resolution.
Don't get me wrong, the z800 is a great piece of kit. Im looking to buy another one as a matter of fact. But, I would never give up my projector over it.
The projector has its drawbacks too, the image will be big, clear, sharp, and best of all - high resolution. But it will also be dim. Shutter glasses let through only about 24% of the light. Projectors are dim in the first place - compared to CRT/TFT atleast. You will have to, therefor, bump up your gamma and vibrance/contrast to compensate for the washed out colours caused by increased gamma. Then there is the constant worry about the bulb lifetime and its cost. But if you can get it, then any stereo FPS in a projector though... simply Jaw Dropping.
Any paricular reason you are interested in the eyescream? ED glasses are the best quality as they have hardware and software specifically designed to supress anomalies which cause flicker/flashes. Or you can get cheap revelators for 15$ on eBay.
I am ofcourse referring playing games here - games that we are lucky enough to get to work in stereo. If you are intending to use them for 3d movies, then let me warn you right here. Unless the movie has been specifically filmed in stereo for stereo viewing, don't waste your money, time, and effort on any junk anyone tries to sell you with the phrase "watch all your favourite movies in 3D!" The pseudo-3d effect just isn't worth it.
I wouldn't pay more than £300 for a mint z800. Things here in the UK are significantly more expensive than in the states and £300 works out to about $600, which is seen as a little high (they were selling brand new for about $500 from the manufacturer a while back). Saying that, the price of brand new ones went up to $1500 now, so I don't know where the pricing stands on eBay.
Regardless though, If I had a choice between my stereo projector or the z800, I wouuld choose the projector without a second thought. You just have to make sure the projector you have your eye on is stereo compatible at a good refresh rate without any ghosting.

Now if it could do passive stereo, using polarizers it would be awesome.
