Thank You Captain0007 for letting us know, because me too was considering to buy this monitor :( So I think safer for me will be to buy PG278QR.
I tested 2 PG27VQs this weekend and both had bad ghosting compared to PG278QR. It was a deal breaker and ghosting was very noticeable.
Really? I say it performs equal as the PG278QR and I can tell you this because I've tested 2 QR and 3 VQ. The crosstalk was very similar with all 5 screens I tested. The next buyer looking for advices will have to either trust you or me... :)

Maybe he tested it as is, "out of the box" and did not bother with adjusting things like contrast, brightness or motion settings

I actually took a pic of all menu settings in QR and made sure VQ is adjusted to same settings, especially contrast, light boost, and gamma. VQ has max gamma of 2.4 while QR has 2.5. A good testing game is Battlefield 1, first mission (tank battle). There's a lot of white bright skies and dark trees and the tank itself. Ghosting is almost unnoticeable with QR while VQ you can see trees ghost a lot. There's also an airship up in sky, with QR there's mo ghost image of it but VQ you can see the airship shadow and it's very distracting. I also noticed that the VQ had some pixel inversion and vertical lines at first. But when I applied all the QR settings the vertical lines were same as QR and pretty much gone. On QR though there's little to no vertical lines no matter what settings. I like the QR image quality much better especially with gamma of 2.5 blacks and dark scenes look better than VQ. As you said readers will have to decide whether to trust my review or yours lol, but I'm just sharing my experience. I have tried so far PG278Q, PG278QR, PG27VQ, Dell S2716DG (if I remember exact model number), Samsung 2233RZ, and VG278HE. I can confidently say QR is the king of all in ghostimg department :)

Well there was that whole thing about 4K panels being substituted into 1440P displays scandal. Sometimes I wonder. I have a S2716DG and love it, I have next to no inversion issues and close to 100% extinction after adjustments. My VG278HE had a small amount of crosstalk and slight inversion that I could never get rid of. But lots of people had horrible crosstalk when they tried this Dell model.

UPDATE: You're absolutely right Rhialto. The ghosting is same as PG278QR. You just need to let the VQ warm up for a while for ghosting to disappear, which is same for QR. The only three key differences most important are a) better gamma on QR, and b) curved immersion in VQ and c) price difference. Choose which one you prefer and what's important to you, but both are great 3D monitors. I had dead pixels so I have now tested 3 QRs and 3 VQs until I found right one. In the end I decided to keep QR mainly coz of better gamma and blacks, and also huge price difference. Here in Canada QR is usually priced $850 but I got it at $699 from bestbuy on sale. VQ is selling for $950 and is a discount price vs original $999. I can't justify spending extra $250 just for curve. So yah good bargain.

So at 27 inches do you like the curved monitor with 3D. When I looked at some curved monitors at the store I didn't really like them, even less so than the curved TVs due to size. But a poster told me he prefers his curved 3DTV to his flat one.

I honestly didn't like the curved compared to flat 3D monitors I've used so far. I like the curved TVs but monitor is a different story. Somehow I felt that screen is a bit smaller. Maybe it's an illusion bit I didn't like it. Happy with PG278QR, lower price, better blacks and gamma, and great immersion.
