After reading over on the blogspot it looks like NVIDIA broke it(MassEffect2) in a Driver release, so it's either rollback Drivers(333.21?) or try this:
Hi everyone, I got a black screen after Bioware and EA splashscreens. It's seems that vertex shaders 9C78E20D and 83C894D6 causes black screen, so i replaced it with shaders from old version of this fix. after this, Now the game works fine. You can download shaders from here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/khz6si
sorry for bad english, i'm russian)
Thanks TsaebehT!
I'm downloading ME2 now from Origin, if that doens't help I will use the shaders. However, I cannot download it from http://www.sendspace.com/file/khz6si because my virusscanner says it's contains adware. Luckily I found the old fix somewhere on my pc, so I'm good.
Also thanks to Pirate for the Origin tip: works like a charm!
edit: Origin, didn't help, however replacing the 2 shaders did! Great!!!!!

Glad you got it working, nothing worse than a fixed game not working anymore. Not too sure about the 'adware' you may have clicked one of the numerous bogus download buttons? If so, if you're seeing them do yourself a favor and install the 'Adblock Plus' plugin for your browser ... I had to disable ABP to see them, for me there was just the 'Click here to start download from sendspace' link and a clean zip file. :)

I'm not sure what went wrong, all I know is that my antivirus program, now automatically disables all links on that page, so no worries. I had Ghostery disabled in my browser apparantly :-)
You can avoid the crashes by renaming the overlay dll here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\GameOverlayRenderer.dll
When I rename or delete it, I can launch Witcher and Fear2 with Helix mod.
It always gets updated whenver you quit the client, but allows deletion when Steam is open.
@bo3b
could you please get this added to the "Installation & Known Issues" section of the Blog, luckily I recalled you mentioning renaming the dll. You can add Lord of the Rings War in the North to the list.

It actually already was there, but at the top. I reformatted it and added it to the steam section as well, so it should be more visible.
