Decline of 3D Vision - Thought you all should know - Dark Times Ahead :(
  2 / 14
This is the single saddest piece of news I've received in a decade (yes, I've been blessed with an uneventful life). This will definitely mean the end of gaming for me. Some jerks have always been shouting "3D is dead" on these forums, just to troll, and I always thought they were wrong. How could they be right when we had Helix, Eqzitara, Chiri, Mike, Helifax, Mana, DHR and all the others? Now, truly the end of 3D Vision has come, with devastating consequences for my oldest and most passionate hobby. Hats off to you, guys! You have brought so much happiness to so many people, that you cannot possibly understand, and that we cannot possibly repay to the same value. Good luck to you, and many thanks!

+1 for the massive, huge, bonkers, standing, supremely grateful, heart felt thanks to our geekiest members of our little gaming community. I completely understand. I have always felt guilty that I am not in a financially healthy enough position to support more. Now I can't do that anyway I really want to express my gratitude to you, eqzitara and Mikear69, for all your hardwork and quiet commitment. Personally, I will not be going down the Rift route. I have a family and can't justify shutting myself off from then more than I already do! If all of our modders leave, at least they have left us detailed instructions how to fix games should we need it. (I know Bo3b is certainly too professional not to, of he hasn't already!) Should any other modder announce retirement from 3D vision expect an equally gushy and grateful response from me. Thanks! Love andysonofbob

This is sad news indeed and unfortunately for me really bad timing (not blaming the Helix modders at all, just bad luck!), if this news would have come out a week ago I still could have returned my 3D kit for a full refund. I really had the idea that Nvidia was pushing on with the version 2 of the kit coming out, but now it seems I just wasted €130,- on the kit. The monitor is bit of a two headed monster, 3D support is what I bought it for, but I like the 144Hz I get when not using 3D in gaming. Thanks for the support, I am trying to enjoy the older games now, but I too was duped on the KOTOR statement which turned out to be untrue. I think Nvidia should just take back all 3D kits they sold since they released version 2 to show they do care about their customers... Having read that Nvidia has been so very rude to the Helix modding team makes this the worst, I wasn't aware of this before as I just joined the 3D Vision owners society.... I am very sorry to hear so and Nvidia should be ashamed for that! I will see how things go in the future, if AMD's implementation of G-Sync is as good as Nvidia's, I will certainly be switching to AMD for GPU's!

With Helix team doing patches, I never felt that 3D Vision was abandoned. Yes NVIDIA didnt care much, maybe broke few games, but when it suddenly became big news? We had nice community who helped making games playable in 3D, so 3D Vision lived. Your department will just make this forum deserted and kill 3D Vision for good, which many people dont want. I would ask to wait with this retirement until Oculus Rift oficially released to mass market (its like 1 more year), then 3D Vision will be irrelevant anyways. For now many people still play in 3D Vision and the only reason they do is those patches you make.

This really bad news for 3D Vision. And I was a klick before ordering the ROG Swift Monitor. Certainly will not do it anymore. When 3D Vision is dead,I definitely not need a 1440p 3D Vision Monitor. (I dont care about GSync, 1440p3D would have been the only reason for me to buy it). Seems like nvidia does'nt need our (the enthusiasts) money. Same for new graphics hardware. Whitout 3D Vision, I won't buy any expensive High End Hardware form nvidia, 3D Vision was the only reason for me to do so. I will go for the nearly same speed AMD cards for half the money in the future. I am pissed!

Helix/Bob & the rest of the guys I owe you a huge thank you which words simply cannot express! Without you I simply wouldn't have been gaming for the last 2+ years, as I cannot go back to 2D... Who here would go back to a black n white TV.. "No one"...! Such a shame as I doubt I'll like the OR as I don't really like things strapped to my head & I'll have to take it off every-time I want a bong!.. I so much prefer sitting 1-2 meters away froma 140" screen in a blacked out room with a few friends & that gives all the level of immersion we need ( especially with a Carl Carl Zeiss head tracker taped to my now redundant 4 pairs of 3D vision glasses ) A very sad day for all 3D gamers.. Cant believe I've spent over 10K in the last 4 years on your tech... Not a penny more.. PS: FUCK YOU NVIDIA... I seem to be able to express that quite easily though...!

Come on guys! I share your disappointments regarding the 3d vision support from NV. But please: Fuck NVIDIA,fuck AMD,fuck the whole world does not help anyone. GFX manufacturers trying to catch the hype as does every company in this capitalists world. And the hype for 3d is over since almost 2 years! There is simply no demand that counts. AMD is not better at all: their executive stated 3d is considered to be dead more than six months ago and they never were really into stereoscopic 3d. They did it only half baken just for the hype.

First of all thank you for doing a great job. Around my 3D Vision Thread (see signature) in Western Europe, a fantastic 3D Vision community grows and we shared a lot of information about these fantastic modders and our way it´s meant to played. For a lot of members theres no way back to 2D, one of you said this is like colour TV --> black/white television --> 100% agree! The only reason to continue my gaming hobbie since 20 years was 3D Vision. Without this my hobbie dies here and now. Thank you for this news and now it`s necessary to inform my community. Some thought about ordering the new PG278 (surround) with triple SLI Sys and other enthusiastic Nvidia stuff. Now its time to think about spending longer thousands of Dollars to Nvidia.

This is sad....Sad indeed... and a real shame.... I know for one I got used to developers breaking patches every time they patch their game (on my surround fixes)... and learnt that is the "natural way" of things... This put me wondering though... Last year we had Metro Last Light which was officially 3D Vision Ready (although it wasn't really but very close to it)...and this year NOTHING... So far I haven't heard about one game that will come this year and will be 3D Vision Ready.... I think this really shows that nvidia is officially NOT pushing for proper 3D Vision support anymore... Real shame sine TBH 3D Vision is the only tech nvidia has that should be sponsored (more than TXAA and HBAO+ ) and other graphical TWEAKS... All I can hope is that the HelixMod team will NOT fully abandon 3D Vision fixing but instead they will do it on the games they want to play. (The way I do it with my OGL Wrapper and release it to the community). That way at least we would get a couple of games per year (I hope) with proper 3D Vision Support;)) Best Regards, Helifax PS: Forgot to mention the most important thing: MASSIVE THANK YOU !!! For your huge amount of time invested in creating all the game fixes we currently have and for your minds;)) The reason I actually started looking around in creating an OpenGL 3D Vision wrapper is because of you guys ^_^. Again Massive BIG THANKS!!!!

I apologize for being a true contrarian, but it's definitely my nature. I think the assumption that this is the death of 3D Vision is a little premature. Losing Mike is a serious, serious blow, no question. Mike has performed some shader magic that goes beyond looking for common patterns to fix in games, where he can actually understand what it's doing to make fixes, even if it's not a normal pattern. This is a truly unique skill that I think really only he and Helix share. But.... Does that mean no one else can make fixes? The tools are available, the sort-of documentation is available. Helix's DX9 wrapper can still fix games. 3Dmigoto can still fix DX11 games. Maybe we cannot fix shadows because we aren't geniuses, but we sure as hell can still disable shadows on any game. Maybe that's no longer good enough, but for me personally, I'd still far prefer to play a game with no shadows in 3D. Death will indeed happen once no-one spends any time on it. Is this a decline, a waning of 3D? Oh most definitely. But death? Not yet. At the moment, I still expect to fix some games, and improve 3Dmigoto to where it can be used more easily by others. It's close. I'm no Mike, but I can definitely fix easier stuff. If you want to pack it in, that's certainly your choice. From my perspective it's still better than it was even at the start of year- DX11 tool, DX11 x64 now possible, OpenGL tool, and DX9 tool. Right at the moment we have the ability to at least fix severe problems on pretty much any game.

Baffling. 3D Vision actively promotes high end sales, multiple hardware varients, with distinct and obvious visual rewards. I think HBAO+ is gimmicky; on mobile objects it looks like cartoon cell shading! I have said it before. I am convinced the reason 3D Vision didn't take off, with the pundits is because of that bonkers, awful setup wizard and nvidia's lame defaults! Imagine a 'parallel universe' where one of us spent 5 mins with a tech reviewer from say PC Gamer, with a properly set up kit. Or nVidia set the default depth to 100%, with a slogan "Look ***through*** the screen!" whilst adding a quick one slide convergence tutorial. Wasn't there a mission here on these boards to do just that.

I'd also like to extend a serious huge THANKS to everyone who has made an effort to fix games. Playing some fixed games in true 3D has been an absolutely terrific joy. I still laugh out loud at how awesome this stuff looks on the projector. Here are the hall of fame people I'd like to personally thank. Helix- for the absolute genius of the idea to fix the shaders directly. Incredible insight. Incredible fixes. eqzitara- for an absolutely amazing number of fixes, putting in a lot of time to keep it working, and helping people out. Maintenance of tools is often ignored as unimportant, but in reality it's the only thing that matters. Mike_ar69- for being super helpful for me personally, and an incredibly fun and rewarding collaboration on DX11 games. DHR- for some killer fixes on many games, including some cool unusual ones. And for taking the time to help me understand more. Mana84- for explaining in comments some tricky pieces of fixing that I didn't quite get. And his incredible fixes. Chiri- for the incredible gesture of open-sourcing 3Dmigoto and making DX11 fixes not just a dream. Helifax- for opening up an entirely new set of games with OpenGL wrapper. Amazing! Flugan- for putting in the terrific effort to make a DX11 wrapper. And for some good second person insights into 3Dmigoto fixes.
