3D Vision Surround @ Single GPU (f.e. 980ti) possible?
Hey guys,
at the moment Im on Gtx 780 Sli @ 3D Vision Surround with 3 x Asus VG278 H.
Maybe Im going to upgrade my SLI SYS in a few months, but step by step.
Here are my questions:
1.) Does 3D Vision Surround work with Single GPU?
2.) Do I need special adapters from DP to DVI?
My VG278H monitors only got DVI connection!
3.) If 1.) and 2.) yes, so any high end card with 3 DP ports can handle 3D Vision Surround @ single GPU?
The answer is yes, 3D Vision Surround works with single GPU. I switched from my GTX-690 (SLI in one card) to a single GTX-980 mainly because of the hassle we are facing nowadays with SLI-support. I was often cut to just one half of my GTX-690 which is basically just one GTX-680 a.k.a "not sufficient for 3D Vision Surround".
3D Vision Surround with one GTX-980 was working but you need to sacrifice some bells and whistles ingame to get a smooth framerate. In the end I was not really satisfied with the results although it is definitely working. I ended up with the Titan X which is perfectly fine for 3D Vision Surround use with just one card. Since the new GTX-980 Ti is more or less identical with the Titan X it should make a great fit for 3D Vision Surround as well!

Thx lohan!
I got one question left?
Which Monitors do you use?
Do they have DP ports?
I got only DVI Ports at my VG278H Monitors and how can I handle this?
Do 10,- Adapters DP --> DVI work or do I need special active adapters to get this running?
I am using 3 x Acer XB270Hb via Displayport. You would need a Displayport --> DVI cable but I am not a 100 percent sure if this will work with 3D Vision Surround. I remember some mentions here that a generic Displayport --> DVI cable could cause Problems. But as I said I am not sure about that!

You need active adapters from DL-DVI to DP that support the frequency of the pixel clock proprietary to your display. :)

Would something like this work?

Are there any cheaper options available?
Greetings Ron.
I have a similar set up and am contemplating same purchase(s) you are:
Single 980ti vs
2way SLI 970
I have 3x Asus VG278 H and would be required to connect them via DVI-D(Dual Link) monitor ports to enable 3d vision surround.
Here is the very helpful tutorial from helifax:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/571045/-tutorial-review-3d-vision-on-external-monitor-using-an-active-adapter-displayport-to-dl-dvi/
I confirmed that the pixel clock for the Asus VG278 H is 285.5424 Mhz
Here are some adapters that are active and necessary 300hertz(note that adapter needs 1amp of power so you may need to plug usb cord into a usb hub or phone charger that delivers 1amp)

The question for us is how many adaptors do we need to purchase? They are not cheap and may tip the scales in favor of 970 SLI. Lohan was nice to confirm 3d vision surround is possible on single GPU using solely the displayports. I have yet to hear of working examples of the specific combination of connections we are hoping to accomplish:
GPU DVI-I(Dual Link) to Monitor 1 DVI-D(Dual Link)
GPU DP to Monitor 2 DVI-D(Dual Link) - Using first adaptor
GPU DP to Monitor 3 DVI-D(Dual Link) - Using second adaptor
An intereting twist is the 980ti G1 by GigaByte. Their highend gaming model the G1 has an additional DVI-D(Dual Link) I/O port. So in theory it could save us the need to by a second adapter:
GPU DVI-I(Dual Link) to Monitor 1 DVI-D(Dual Link)
GPU DVI-D(Dual Link) to Monitor 2 DVI-D(Dual Link)
GPU DP to Monitor 3 DVI-D(Dual Link) - Using first adaptor

The specs for the card say it support 3d vision and surround but I don't assume that to mean necessarily both technologies in combination and using the 2 DVI output simultaneously. I will keep looking and will post again if I find an example of someone running this successfully.

Well, I don;t know if this helps:
But normally I connect my display on 2x780Tis via DL-DVI
However, I was able to connect all 3 Displays and use 3D Surround on one GPU: 2xDL-DVI port one on DP port using an active adapter.
So, 3D Surround WILL work only on DP ports + 2xDL-DVI. (Single CARD or SLI)
NOTE: HDMI WILL NOT WORK AS A CONNECTION!!!
Hope it helps;))

Thx for helping Mahalo and helifax!
I also thought about 980 single, but like lohan tested its a little bit to slow running 3D Vision Surround. 980 SLI with only 4GB vram is very expensive refering to 4Gb Vram limitation.
With one 980 Ti and 2 adapters this is going to be very expensive.
A friend got 970 SLI, but i dont think thats a good choice because of 3,5 GB + 0,5 GB Vram fail.
At the moment Sli upgrading seems like to be a deadend for me :-/

I am still on the 780Tis and the 3GB Vram might be a problem in some games I agree where you will need to put some things that use VRAM (shadows, textures) on a lower value rather than ultra so you don't flood the vram.
But besides this... 980TI + 2 adapters = 2 970 SLI Cards as price or even 2x980.
I still prefer SLI over single card solution though...
I still consider SLI to be a good investment:)

The more I research I am agreeing with Helixfax and others that for specific needs of 3d vision surround sli is better fit. It needs the raw horsepower of divying up framer rendering vs a big memory buffer. I plan to stay on 1080 and just would like to get smooth performance on games from last 5years preferably at higher settings. It seems gpu just recently are able to do this relatively affordably. This is a nicer $700 decision than a $2000 one:)
