I'm a 3D junkie. Immersion is everything for me. I had 3 pairs of the old shutter glasses, but then Nvidia stopped supporting them. I even got some HMD goggles, the Icuiti VR920s, just to play games in stereo 3D with their native drivers. They sucked though. Big time.
I was hopelessly trying for months to save money for the full on Vision kit with the 120hz monitor when I read somewhere that they support CRTs... and I have a really nice Mitsubishi DiamondPro CRT monitor which can do 120hz at 1200x1024 easily. Ordered the glasses from newegg a few minutes after reading that. Yeehaw!
I've only had a few hours with the glasses last night, but they are amazing. Far superior to the old shutter glasses. I played Oblivion for a couple hours and it really blew me away. Melee combat is really immersive, peering over your sheild at the enemy as he charges at you. I started ducking and moving backward in my chair! And when the camera zooms in on the NPC's faces for dialogue, it's quite weird, like their face is right in front of you. What really got me was when I was looking at my character in 3rd person and rotating around her, the sword she was holding came out of the screen and nearly poked my eye out!
I did have a lot of ghosting, but nowhere near as bad as the old shutter glasses. Cranking up the brightness helps a bit. I was able to go full depth and pull the monitor right up close with no nausea or headaches, something I could never do with the old glasses. I couldn't use those for more than an hour without strain. These things, you forget your're even wearing them after a while.
And now I can save money and wait for them to release 120hz LCDs in sizes bigger than 22 inches. Hopefully one day I'll have triple monitors in 3D!
Breathing new life into all my old PC games is well worth the 200 bucks. And now I'll think twice about buying an Xbox 360 game if there's a PC port of it.
