Cool new idea for the use of Nvidia 3D Vision The perfect way to enhance the 3D effect in games
1 / 2
If Nvidia 3D Vision supports unanimated Stereo Images (they actually do have those), then perhaps we can start making Stereo Textures. The only problem is finding a texture file that supports Stereoscopic images.
But imagine making a Stereoscopic texture for the Portals in Portal 2. That would look so awesome! Or maybe having a Stereoscopic Carpet Texture! The possiblities are endless! You will be able to add more depth to your 3D games than ever before!

That is what I would like to know. I guess it depends on what types of image files your game can use as textres. They do have some Stereoscopic image types out there, including but not limited to BMS (Stereo Bitmap), PNS (Stereo PNG), and JPS (Stereo JPG)

I don't think it would work the entire way out. The stereotexture would have a fixed depth (like images always have) and while ingame where you can change depth you should experience anomalies if changing the stereodepth. It would probably work to some degree though but i'm very uncertain how much you practically locks the depth to a pleasant setting.

It might be possible to make it adjustable in order to match the user's 3D Vision Depth/Popout settings.

Aren't bump mapping, displacement mapping and tessellation all supported in 3D anyway? All these have the same effect as a 3D texture would anyway, if I'm not wrong on what you mean by 3D textures?

Yes, those are but i thought amaroq meant change textures to stereoscopic ones which will lead to the limitations i mentioned.
As for changing the textures, why not use texmod? Launch the game through it, select the texture, export, modify it and launch the game again importing the texture. The actual textures are 2d of course but when changed they will be applied to the affected models.

There is Bump Mapping, there is Tessellation, there is Displacement Mapping, there is Parallax Mapping (Bump + Height), and there is Voxel Mapping (3D Pixels), but actual Stereoscopic Textures are something different entirely. They have the same effects, but they work differently.
I only suggested this because I thought it was awesome, nothing more.

Would 3D textures work in any instance bar looking directly at them? As if you went to the side of the texture the 3D effect would be corrupted would it not?

For that, I am not sure
But still, it don't think it should be too hard to expiriment and find out.

Is it just me or does this seem really stupid? How can you make a texture stereo? The stereo effect, e.g. Depth is nothing to do with textures, but the textures "locations" in the 3D world, all of which is rendered in 3D, how does this make sense? Games area already fine in 3D as it is, it just takes the developer putting a little effort into supporting it, which it seems more are doing since more people are getting 3D.

I'm not asking what format to use, I'm asking what the Hades a '3D texture' is even supposed to mean. A texture is what you wrap an object in, like paint. The surface of an object is 2D. So how do you get a 3D texture??

To make a Stereo texture, you use a stereo image file. Simple.
