Oculus Rift First Impressions
I really can't wait for eqzitara review on the rift, you're probably as hype free on the Rift as anyone can be, so I really want to hear your thoughts about it, the more detailed the better ;)
Well not really a great writer, and tbh Im almost positive I am going to have same impressions as bo3b. We both are big veteran projector users and we both have similiar tastes.

I'm still waiting for the first video of someone hurling because they refuse to take it off and try to man up and push through the motion sickness. :D

Thanks for the review - I've been looking for this exact perspective since I ordered my Rift. I, too, suspected that the only reason people are freaking out about the Rift is because they never gave a high-FOV stereo projector setup a chance. I just received my Rift shipment email, so I will also share my thoughts when it arrives. I'm pretty excited about the added immersion from the integrated head tracking and the higher FOV, regardless of the overall visual quality. Plus, having stereo-compatible shader rendering from Rift-supported games can only mean good things for 3d Vision users, since clearly nVidia has given up on getting us game support.

Absolutely fantastic review bo3b. Really was a great perspective from a 3D gamer. Glad i held out. hopefully the consumer model will up the res to a point i could consider worthy. I really hope they bring out two versions. £300 version (to ensure viability) and £600+ for people who want the nuts. I really hope it does take off though, as 3D seems to be slipping into a coma, and i still think vr with motion detection and we could have something very matrix like. Sounds like the nausea is a bitch at first though! The pains we go through for gaming ;-)

If you know anything about playing ArmA you'll understand why I'm looking forward to this device. I'm only worried about the resolution, I'm kind of a junkie for high-rez (I have a very high rez monitor for when I have to go back to 2D gaming).. so I don't know if I'll be in on the first gen OR or wait for a better screen than even the initial final production models. Great review though.

@foreverseeking ... I had to do a double-take just to make sure I wasn't accidentally in some old thread that had been dug up.

Lol, hey up TsabethT. Yeah i went a bit awal there fo a while. All that 2D gaming got th better of me, so i decided to take a step outside for a change! But since then, have landed a job as a music teacher, which is very cool, expecially as i only started learning German 7 months ago, and it's in a german school.... Could be interesting. I have been lurking in the shadows from time to time though, but it's been pretty unevenful in here so thought not to chime in. Read this review the other day though, first interesting thing for me in weeks... And it wasnt even about nvidia 3d! Hows tricks with you? Have I missed anything important on these boards? Other then the return of a certain mr Loader of course ;-)

Yeah 2D or 3D gaming, you have to get outside once in awhile, although I'm sure it's much more necessary with 2D gaming. Congrats on the new gig. Oh I see you only like it around here when there's drama or a hopeless cause. Lol.

Always drama here[and my pm/email box] there was actually less drama about 3d vision ending before helix started like 15 months ago. wtf? Its funny because games without support were accepted back then. Now when a DX11 game comes out without support the sky is falling. [Seriously, Like out of the 7 DX11 games that were major these last 12 months only 2 didnt work in 3D vision and one of those two worked on tridef.] AC3 comes out... 5 sky is falling topics then same with BI.... I got a backlog so long, that if 3d vision were to end I'd have a full year/two to catch up regardless. Congrats on job [I now know 2 3D vision users who are teachers]. As I said, only thing you been missing on is people not sniffing the roses on a sunny day and just talking about how it could rain. Id rather enjoy my day and carry an umbrella.

To be fair, eqzitara, most games didn't have stereo-breaking shader effects a couple years back, and as a result, it was more often than not that games would work despite the lack of official support. And then, when DX9 games with such shaders were being released, at least we could fix them. Now, with DX10/DX11, most shaders come compiled, and we can't fix them very easily through Helix-like methods. So, it's a much, much, much bigger deal now if a game is released without official stereo support. If games start jumping on the Rift bandwagon, then it will be better for all of us.

No doubt in my mind that games have more and more game breaking 3d issues. I say compatibility gets 10% worse every year. Games get more advanced and 3d vision aged profiles arent exactly cutting the slack. Im not saying 3D vision doesnt have a shaky future. Like who knows, dx11 may be a game breaker but helix hasnt flat out said nothing can be done and even said he plans to work on something in summer. Im not nearly as skilled as Helix, but its not over till he says its over [and he has every right when to decide it is.] But its really a tad annoying with all these threads and everything where we have more games then ever. Like so many people, admittedly alot of its helix/myself are making games compatible but we got chiri's tools now, other helixmodders, more developers then ever showing support, people interested in Rift/3D. Like why now, why not the days before Helix came around. Were we less picky, or new people are comming around with higher expectations? Games like Half life 2/Darksiders 1 used to applauded for its compatibility in 3D. Its got so many issues. UE3 game issues [minus BI] are the exact same as they were in past but now people can't play them without a patch. Hell I heard people speak well of Bioshock 1/2 before patch. Like if Helix didn't come I would of played ME3 in 3d vision using same methods as ME2 way back when. Compatibility didnt drop nearly that much in 12 months as people think it did. Huds that were 2D in rpgs/fps/ etc werent magically better back then. Dragon age origins, which is the prime example of 3D vision compatibile is probably my least popular game patch because it requires a 2D mouse. It used to be on everyone'es top 10 list. The same issues then are the same issues now. Sure there is more games in general with issues. The problem is people got a taste for 3D vision ready games that the former "passable" is no longer what it used to be. The amount of people who won't play "blah blah" cause shadows need to be to be turned off. The amount of people who won't play "blah blah" Gunsights/ multiple depth/convergence settings are "needed." Ive honestly had so many of these complaints on helixmod threads/in this forums. These arent new issues. They been around since forever but now people expect them to be taken care of. All I'm saying is why now? Why not 15 months ago? Seriously 15 months ago we had what 15 3d vision ready games. 50 excellent ones?[Just a guess] What do we have now? Like 50 3d vision ready games and 100 excellent ones?[Just a guess] 15 months ago we didn't have helixmod, we had 3dsolutiongaming. Which is a great site and I still regularly visit it. Main reason I started my blog was I thought he wasnt comming back but he did and better then ever. We did what we could to get games to work and it was never easy. When I open a game and start working on it before really fixing it. It looks no different then it did 15 months ago before when we'd go through the options, ini's,etc and basically triage till we got it to work. I think people are really suffering selective memory or they are too new to remember how it used to be. I am not an old man and was born in 86 but I feel like I am constantly thinking back in my day... People tell me its over for 3D because they cant get games to run. Why are the ways that we used to use forgotten? No more ini editing, no more going through settings, no more people who know about 3d vision profiles.I've honestly had to get games and launch them and tell people which profile to use when they start saying it doesnt work in 3D. Like things are way better here on this side of the fence then on the tridef side but honestly. They've been getting better this last year. They been getting games to work that they wouldn't before. But they don't have these threads. Like lets say helix stops completely, nvidia doesnt pick up the slack. Why wouldnt we go to AMD. I honestly say yes, 3d vision due to helix is much better then tridef. But they an't bad and are certainly better then what we had 15 months ago. But honestly the same issues people "can't play this game because whatever reason" in 3D will still be there. 3D can die sooner rather then later for these reasons. Expectations and we've as a community have gotten lazy.

Well, its nobodys fault but our own. Exactly what was needed was not happening -a showing of support for proper 3D. How many threads were created in the Crysis 3 forums complaining about the issues? Case closed.

I say were in a pretty good spot right now. The Helix wrapper is moving forward, got some pretty nice hotkey updates, and there seems to be more fixes than ever. I was out of the loop for 2 weeks, having sold a graphics card and had not been gaming, came back and had missed two pages on the news section of the Helix site, couldn't believe it. I think when/if a Helix DX11 wrapper comes around, we'll be golden. If that happens Nvidia really need to get their shit together and acknowledge community fixes.
