Triggering 3D in Falcom's "Xanadu Next"
This fantastic action-RPG dungeon romp is finally out now on Steam and GOG, but I couldn't get it to display in 3D yet, even though my monitor's built in emitter lit up. If you're into oldschool stuff, Xanadu Next is pure gameplay bliss. The flow is as addictive as you'd expect a 16-bit Zelda or Landstalker in a polygon world to be. It's basically a hack'n slash version of Vagrant Story. I expected the game to work with 3D vision, since it's likely using the same engine as Ys Origin and all other Falcom games worked just fine. However, the only part in actual 3D is the character on the save file selection screen, while everything else remains flat. Fiddling around with the config file, 3D Hub-Player, Aion and Prototype profile assignments didn't help. Fullscreen mode is active, since borderless window can be deactivated in the settings options. Falcom is my new favourite developer, as I absolutely love their traditional takes on RPGs and action-RPGs, such as Trails in the Sky, Cold Steel, Ys and now Xanadu. Overly hyped triple-A games like CoD and Battlefield can take a hike imo :P

Is it a DX9 game? I love Falcom games, so I'll probably buy it on GOG... when it's cheaper. I have more than enough games to play/fix until then. Check the stereo texture setting in the Nvidia profile and change it to something else, with Nvidia Inspector. But it may not be that.

Yes, it's a DX9 game and will set you back 20$ on GOG. Steam is a couple bucks cheaper. The stereo texture setting seems to be missing in the profile (driver ver. 364.72). Something peculiar is going on, judging by the switch from proper 3D on the title screen to lack thereof in-game. Disabling Vsync prevents 3D from kicking in. I've bought the game on GOG an hour ago and I've tried it. It works perfectly in 3D if you set the "Resolution and Quality -> Frame Buffer" option to "Unused". If that setting is used, the game will be in 2D. It's a DX8 game and the DX9 converter didn't work for me (and for other people over the internet), so I can't modify any shaders (I wanted to make an HUD depth mod). By the way, I think this has reduced my loading times: https://bitbucket.org/ThirteenAG/d3d8-wrapper/downloads/ Edit: screenshot: http://u.cubeupload.com/masterotaku/XANADU002.jpg

Maybe try dgVoodoo and 3DMigoto? http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2.html ...it added DX8 support a few versions ago

What a nice surprice masterotaku, THANKS ! I must admit that I had given up on the game a long time ago ! I use DSR x4 3840x2160 and it works just fine ! also forcing anisotropisk filtering in ads a little to the looks ! Thought that I would post a couple of pics, notice the talk icon it's also rendered in depht. Edit: You're right ! It would be nice with some hud adjustment, and maybe also a convergence togle.. Maybe I did it wrong (a similar configuration to what I used for Star Wars Rogue Squadron didn't work). I'm really liking this game, after three hours of playtime.

I've already beaten the game, but your discovery calls for another playthrough :) I'm surprised it's DX8 after all, since the Steam page mentions DX9.

Vsync is also a mandatory setting for 3D, for some reason. If I disable it (the launcher option, no matter if I force it in the drivers), the game doesn't trigger 3D Vision. If someone manages to get dgvoodoo working, please say it and how you did it. I really want to modify the HUD.

Is dgVoodoo crashing on it's own? ...without 3DMigoto? The few times I've had issues with dgVoodoo, it was due to the VRAM being set too high or too low in the DirectX tab.

Good news, everyone. I managed to get dgvoodoo working and I could mod some stuff Preview of what's coming: - HUD depth hotkey (controller and keyboard). - HUD tilting hotkey (controller and keyboard) to make the top have more depth than the bottom. It has multiple presets. - Convergence hotkey (controller and keyboard). - Stereoized reflections thanks to 3Dmigoto. I still haven't released it because those reflections that are now 3D have a problem. They have double depth (like the typical haloing problem) and I haven't found the correct variable to correct the depth. I made a somewhat good approximation which is this:
o5.x+=stereo.x*(1-stereo.y*0.015-0.5);
It sometimes looks good and sometimes bad. But it isn't perfect either way. I'll have to keep trying variables until I find the good one. A second problem is that HUD depth somehow affects reflections. They look bad unless HUD is at screen depth. It happens because part of the reflection (the sky usually) shares the same vertex shader and pixel shader as the HUD. I'll try to find a way to filter that. Maybe the internal resolution of the reflection can be the key for filtering.

Thanks to ZellSF in the dgvoodoo forums (https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=34931&start=3200) I could finally make the game work with dgvoodoo on Windows 10. I think the 256 colors thing was also enabled in the compatibility tab of the game exe. So I started doing the fix again. But this time I fixed the stereoized reflections correctly: http://u.cubeupload.com/masterotaku/XANADU017.jpg I don't know why I didn't reach that formula that other time, lol. Expect a fix with instructions soon (today, maybe. I won't be home tomorrow), once I do all the HUD features again. Unless I find a way to not affect reflections, any HUD modification will break them.

The fix is published. I hope you don't find using dgvoodoo too annoying :p. It's worth it for the 3D reflections, HUD depth and shorter loading times.
