Why no XP 3D Stereo support? No XP seems a little early to me. . .
Hello, I have some concerns and I was hoping that someone could help me understand Nvidia's recent decision to not support 3D Stereo on Windows XP.

I have already done a lot of searching over this forum and many others and I have not found any other posts addressing this issue, if there is one that you know of, I would appreciate a link.

Now I am not writing in anger and I am not looking to argue or take out frustration on anyone, I'm just generally disappointed and hoping that someone can help shed some light on the subject for me.

I've been looking at the possibility of upgrading my system to have 3D Stereo for over a year now and from all the research I've done on the subject I ended up coming to the conclusion that most of what was out there was buggy, old or unsupported and that I should wait until some company decided to give 3D Stereo technology another try. That day came when I found out that Nvidia was going to support 3D Stereo complete with new drivers and their own headset. As you can imagine I was instantly overjoyed at the news and I couldn't wait until they released it to the public.

When I decided to read further into the headlines and get all the juicy details I found that Windows XP was not to be supported in these new drivers, and to me this news felt like a slap in the face and although I know it isn't personal I cant fathom why Nvidia would make a decision like this.

Now don't get me wrong, I Have absolutely nothing against Vista and I will probably switch over in a few years, but at this moment in time I have no reason to dump my perfectly good copy of XP.

I could understand dropping XP support three years from now after Vista has become the primary operating system in the market, but at this time it seems that most sources agree that about 75% of the operating systems in use right now are Windows XP with Vista at only a shy 12%. Of course Vista will eventually take the lead from XP, but I think I can safely say it wont suddenly happen next month. Vista may have entered the ring, but XP hasn't exactly down for the count.

So as an XP user who doesn't have the uncontrollable urge to suddenly switch operating systems, I would like to know a little more about this issue and why XP support was dropped. And if it looks like Nvidia wont be changing their minds anytime soon, what are my options if I still want to take advantage of 3D Stereo?

Thanks for your time.

As far as I can understand, they needed to completely rewrite the driver from scratch.

But, they only had the resources to do it once, so it was either WinXP, which has MS has just abandoned but 99% of gamers use worldwide, or it was Vista which was apparently "the future" according to microshaft - but only the rare person used it. they Chose the second option.

Epic Fail, yes.

Same kind of closed minded decision that other execs made in other companies which has led to the economy of the nation being in the state it is today.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. . .

But I am curious, I have done some good amounts of digging in these forums and I cant find any other topics that discuss this. As far as my searching is concerned I might be the first one. (though I hope not.) Why haven't I see any other complaints?

It's just disappointing that Nvidia would listen to Microsoft more than their customers, with all the people running around saying we shouldn't upgrade to Vista you would think Nvidia would be all over continued XP support. . . but this seems to not be the case.

Thanks for replying and helping me out.

Visit the community at www.mtbs3d.com

You will find many threads about this topic, and even some alternative solutions to the problem.

The reason it is not discussed too much here is mainly because no-one really cares about nVidia anymore... people have had enough.

A company called iZ3D have made an excellent driver which works amazingly well on XP systems. It is currently in beta testing, free download, many stereo modes supported. All our chips are on them at the moment.

First would like to say that you are completely awesome and that I would never have found that website if you hadn't shown it to me. Thanks man! :D

But after some digging in the MTBS forums I also found out that even if I wanted to try a 3D Stereo solution without Nvidia drivers or hardware, Nvidia is still making it difficult because the third-party drivers and hardware cant function 100% with Nvidia's video cards!

Aaaarrrg man, is there no gaming god up in the sky!! /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

I encourage anyone who feels the same way I do about Nvidia dropping XP support for 3D Stereo to speak up and share your thoughts, you never know when a little complaining could go a long way. . .

Epic Fail, yes.

Let's add bogus, dysfunctional, moronic, disappointing, irritating! Got eDimensional 3D glasses, wireless. Would pop in an old Mechwarrior game and enable some cheats like invulnerability and unlimited ammo. Play a night mission and turn out all the lights, crank up the surround sound and go to town. Total immersion!!
Pop in a Formula One racing game and FEEL the speed!
Biggest mistake I made was buying the 8600 gt as an upgrade. Turned out to be a downgrade. No more 3D!! Pissed beyond belief!! And, like you, waited for somebody at nVidia to grow a brain and make a 3D stereo driver only to find out it's only supported by Vista, the second worst operating system next to WinMe! I still have XP Home and actually bought 2 full install discs (OEM) for backup before Windows stopped making them. XP still rules the roost when it comes to gaming and it shows a total ineptitude on nVidia's side not to support it. I've tried beta drivers and 3rd party drivers only to get nothing but crashes and invalid syncs. Makes me believe nVidia have become clueless about true gaming and I've decided I will not be subsidizing them in the future when it comes time to upgrade my video card again!
