3D Projector Users – Anti Aliasing
  1 / 2
How do you guys deal with the anti aliasing issue with projectors using 1280 x 720 for 3D? I find that the jaggies and shimmering are so distracting I am not sure I can continue using it. I use full settings but its still pretty bad, I don’t need it to be perfect but at this point I think it ruins the 3D effect. I'm not to up on AA as it never really bothered me in 2D higher resolutions but 720 is another matter. I am currently playing Skyrim and am finding its own AA setting are not sufficient at all. Any advice would be much appreciated, is there another way of dealing with this? Thanks :-)

The best you can do is use DSR, if your native resolution is 720p than it is simple. Set DSR to x4 and you will get better results. Still it will be lowres but at least less aliasing.

I use the gedosato tool for down sampling with a variety of different games. There are far more options with this generic tool and works pretty good too. http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?tag=gedosato Some games look great in 720P on my BenQ W1070 when tweaked and sampled several levels.

I just crank the AA, sometimes with the aid of the nvidia control panel. As I'm running at 720p, it gives me a bit more GPU overhead to do this compared to 1080p. It's a bit crappy if the game's only AA method is FXAA though.

Smaa injectors are low cost/performance solutions like sweetfx. It really depends on age of Game/Performance of your video cards. Personally I'd use DSR to avoid hassle then just use games AA when needed. Resolution is the MOST costly form of AA though keep in mind. Like MSAA X4 @ 720p is probably better performance/AA . Then 1080p in most cases. -------------------------- FXAA is ALWAYS a no no though with low resolution. Basically FXAA blurs more the lower resolution your at.

I use DSR with a edid hack (720p is not my native resolution) or a custom resolution (like 3200x1800@30Hz) with T/D or SbS mode (thanks to DarkStarSword). The result picture is very clean and smooth and mostly without Aliasing. Use downsample instead of driver AA gives me the better picture quality.

They both accept 1080p signal and dsr uses that 1080p as base resolution even though 720p is native(even says so in ncp). I think dsr just uses highest available resolution no matter what the native resolution is. @Ritchski I agree, 720p is not good enough. I used custom resolution 1080p120hz downsampled to 720p120hz when i was using 720p 3d vision projector. More annoying on 1080p 3dtvplay projectors since same trick doesnt work. Instead i have to remove all resolution above 720p just so i can use nvidia dsr to play in 1080p or higher.

yeah I am having trouble using DSR as my projector native res is 1080p (am using edid hack for 3D) , I am still fiddling with it though as not used it much so might be missing something. The injectors mess with the fixes I am finding. I'm sure some newer games wont be as bad but Skyrim is a bad case, I dont mind some jaggies but even cranked up its too distracting.

I use Custom Resolution Utility to strip away all resolutions but 720p (my native) then DSR works and programs have no choice but to use the correct resolution! http://www.monitortests.com/

gamergap, could you elaborate on how you do this, and what projector you use? I've tried in the past (when DSR was new), and couldn't get it working.

I'm more interested in how you generated them. Or are you using ones you found online?

I managed to get DSR working for my 720p resolution following tips here so thanks for help. it solves the AA problem to a degree I could be happy with but the performance hit is too big for my liking with DSR. might have to look at an alternative.
