Hey people,
I was wondering which 3d technology is better for gaming or watching films (which does it look better with)
3d vision 2 or dlp active shutter 3d (with 3d tv play when necessary for gaming)??
Or is one as good as the other ?
Jay
I do not use 3dtvplay, but I think the name of it indicates in the title, pretty sure it has some limitations compared to 3dvision. I'm sure someone around here will chime in and set you right.

Projector wise I assume.
3D vision 2 by far. Clearer, no tinting, no ghosting.
However this is irrelevant if your getting a projecor that has DLP that isnt 3d vision ready [the ones listed on site].
Because DLP auto inniates in 3D MODE. Meaning the screen has the tint for DLP glasses and looks like crap for 3d vision glasses.
Unless your talking about one of those 720P 3d vision ready projectors you MUST go DLP.
I was thinkin if buying an optoma hd151x but now i'm worried it wont do 3d vision ??
It is not on the list on nvidia's web site (but it hasn't been updated in ages) the guy in optoma said it will do it !!! but it doesn't say on optoma's website either....
it say's "Full 3D - The 3D features of Optoma projectors can only be used with compatible 3D content. Typical applications include use with 3D educational or 3D design and modelling systems. 3D TV broadcast systems, (SKY in the UK), Blu-ray 3D™ and 3D games from the Sony® PS3 or Microsoft® Xbox 360 are now supported as part of the HDMI v1.4a specification."
xbox 360 use's a geforce card presume they use 3d vision ??
Do I need to use the dvi for 3d vision or does it go through the hdmi ?

Ok, so there are two names for essentially the same tech: 3D Vision, and 3D TV Play.
3D Vision is typically run over DP or DVI, supports a maximum of 1080p@120hz (60fps per eye). This is typically used for 3D monitors, and you need 3D Vision glasses, and a 3D Vision display for it. I believe it can be run over HDMI, but subject to the resolution/refresh rate limitations of 3D TV Play.
3D TV Play typically runs over HDMI. It is limited to either 1080p@24hz (24fps per eye), or 720p@60hz (60fps per eye). 24fps is pretty unplayable, so you'll be running 720p. You use the 3D glasses recommended by the manufacturer for this mode (probably DLP link for this projector). You need a license to use 3D TV Play, which I believe costs about $30.
As far as I know, there are no projectors that support 3D Vision over DVI. This means that for any projector, you are limited to the 3D TV Play resolutions/refresh rates. This is fine. 720p with high AA settings looks great on a projector. It's not quite as crisp as higher resolutions, but it's a great experience that I'd highly recommend. In your position, I'd go for the projector, and get a decent set of DLP-Link glasses to go with it.

I just got off the phone with optoma and there is an option in the service menu to switch to nvidia 3d vision !!!
Thank god as I already ordered the thing taught I was going to have to send it back...
He said there's an option for it in the service menu and it has to be switched over to it... (after going away an coming back to me 3 times).
Great news !!! delighted with this... it seems they didn't even know themselves if it did it... the guy literally had to go read the service manual....and he was the third fella I asked in optoma, nobody in richer sounds (the shop I'm buyin it from) knew if it did it either.. Plus I was told on this forum that it didn't do it, that i'd have to use 3dtv play... Well it seems there's a lot of confusion around this new technology and it's a pity nvidia doesn't update their list of supported displays more often.
HAPPY DAYS!

PS looks like this one can be added to the list !! I will confirm when I receive it...

By the way, I find 3DTV Play's 1080p24 mode unplayable NOT because of its 24 fps, but because of its excessive control lag created by forcing a 24 Hz Desktop (and controls), unlike TriDef's Ignition (which allows 60 Hz Desktop/controls in 24 Hz mode). As long as the GPU could maintain a consistent 24 fps, I found Ignition 1080p24 gameplay to be acceptable. 3DTV Play really needs updating!

Really, it wouldn't have made any practical difference if it was 3D Vision or 3D TV Play. Both work with games and movies, and both are limited to 1080p@24hz (24fps per eye), or 720p@60hz (60fps per eye) over HDMI.

the optoma hd151x has dvi input, but it will not do FullHD 3D@60Hz.
because of its hozizontal frequency of 91,146 KHz.
for FullHD 3D@60Hz you will need 130KHz.
So it will limited to FullHD 3D@24HZ or 720p 3D@60Hz.
You can run 1080p SBS 3d or TD 3D @60Hz but this is not FullHD.

Not certain, but I'm pretty sure that 3D Vision will allow higher than 1080p. The ROG Swift at 1440p works in 3D at full resolution, right?
Also, we can use DSR in 3D Vision.

I'll be very curious how it works for you. If you can even do 720p using 3D Vision, that would save me from needing to replace my glasses.
I expect that you will need to run an EDID override, because unless the projector is on the nvidia 'approved' list inside the driver, it won't allow activation. So, it's two pieces, the 3D Vision activating, and the projector allowing 120Hz frame-sequential.

Yes you need to run edid override. Optoma hd26 also had nvidia 3d vision in the service menu but there was no need to switch it on. By default, most optoma projectors have DLP link and IR 3d sync methods and enabling 3d vision from the service menu replaces IR mode. Both of them worked the same way after EDID, ie allowing you to enable 120hz framesequential and switch eyes if needed without destroying the image like dlp link does.
(IIRC i previously wrote on some thread about my problems with hd26 and edid override but it was just a faulty projector.)

Ah! Very good to know, thanks for that. I can authoritatively state that the Acer projectors do not work. I bought the current gen H5830BD, and their service mode does not allow you swap eyes OR run in frame sequential, so you get DLP glasses or zero.
Sounds like go with Optoma.
