I'm wondering if I can use the Legacy Stereoscopic 3D Drivers to get 3D out of my non-3D Sonia Bravia LCD.

I have a GeForce GTX 460.
Windows indicates my Sony Bravia supports a refresh rate up to 60Hz.

I thought there was a way to have 3D games before the current influx of 3D TVs. You just needed to purchase glasses. Why were glasses for sale (not talking about anaglyph). It may not have been through Nvidia then. Do you know what I'm talking about or am I totally mistaken? What are these legacy drivers for?

CRTs are also supported by the new stereo drivers and 3d vision glasses. I think that was great of nVidia to do. I find CRTs to have some wicked ghosting problems, but they are still plenty viewable in 3d stereo if they are the only option. Back in the day, I was very pleased with my old NEC 22" CRT with magicbright modes. 3d stereo made my gaming so awesome. Mechwarrior 3 and 4, Painkiller, Boiling Point, Morrowind and so on were all great in stereo.

The legacy ("Old school") stereodrivers only works up to winxp, up to nvidia 7950 gpu's and besides anaglyph supports a wide range of stereosetups like stereomirror, dual output, crt, dlp whatever shuttering, neurok 3d-display, sharp display etc....
3d-vision is quite crippled in this regard! :P Just joking but a future support for different setups would be welcome though.
As for lcd's most of them (still) have to great internal lag to work properly with shutterglasses.

I have been reading different forums and have seen several times the legacy drivers only support up to windows xp, up tp nVidia 7950 GPUs but... there are "stereo drivers" for drivers Forceware 174.74, which have versions even for Windows Vista x64 and, of course Windows XP x32 (WHQL). This driver comes with full support for all GeForce graphics cards from the GeForce 6, 7, 8, and 9 series.
I am thinking of buying one of these cards so I would really appreciate If you have deeper info on this: has anyone really verified 7950 GPUs are the last supported, or it is just a rumour believed to be true because it has been copied uncountable times from forum to forum? Any light on this?
Likay, I can also see you have two different cards installed in the same PC, so you´re not using SLI. I´m an ignorant on this, how does the PC know which of them to activate when booting? How can you manage them later in windows in order to decide which one of them has to work for each game? (ie, new games nVidia 3D Vision new card, old games legacy driver old card?

That sig is old and now i only use the 8800 (eventhough i still have my 7900). With the drivers i used by then (think it was 169.21) i had no problems using both cards at the same time. When i needed to use stereodrivers i (in the device manager) deactivated the card i didn't needed for the specific op-system so i only used 7900 for xp (nvidia legacy drivers/iz3d and tridef) and 8800 for win7 (iz3d and tridef). No physical remove of any card was needed. I could use both cards at the same time in all kind of extended/cloneconfigs with sometimes fascinating results.
The 8800 ONLY works to some degree with legacy drivers and in that case ONLY with a specific shutterconfiguration. I don't remember which one but dual projectors was certainly a nogo.
The newer stereodrivers you link to are compatible with winvista minimum, thus automatically meaning no winxp support. The latest familiar legacy stereodriver in my knowledge is the 162.50 which i use with 169.21 forceware and old-school gaming.
Sorry for sounding complicated but it's all nvidias mess... /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thank you. I just saw there was a Forceware version for XP, but didn´t realize the stereo driver was only for vista.
I will use the system with a 3D DLP proyector using an edimensional dongle with DLP-link glasses or even with edimensional glasses and their IR transmitter (though my experience with the old system says it is not necessary). In that case... should I risk buying a series 8 (ie 8800) or just get a 7950? what about a 7950 GX2?

7900GTX or ultra. I don't know if you will get any at all performance boost with a 7950.
The 7950GX2 is a dual gpu sli-card which maybe is a nogo with older stereodrivers. Note: I'm not completely 100% sure about "no sli" with legacydrivers since i recall somebody actually had positive experiences with it. You should wait for more positive answers first i guess.
There will be no need for a more powerful card since older games wouldn't require much juice anyway. For newer games you could just switch to 3d-vision.

Why do the legacy drivers work with CRT & not my LCD? Is it just that the refresh rate of 60Hz isn't enough for 3D?
Because LCD is an inferior technology compared to CRT. The only reason the former has replaced the latter is because it is lighter and cheaper to make. CRT screens have superior color ranges, superior resolutions, and superior refresh rates.
It was a sad day when a totally inferior technology replaced one that was reliable and time tested, but that's the way technology works sometimes. LCD screens will probably never catch up, instead they will be replaced with something that does.

Thanx again.

I find CRTs to have some wicked ghosting problems, but they are still plenty viewable in 3d stereo if they are the only option.

Thanks in advance for your help.
