Official 334.67 Driver Thread for New 3D Vision Game Support Feedback

Hi sebRab and RAGEdemon,
Your comments further confirm my remark regarding the subjective reactions and tolerances we have towards 3D.
Most persons, myself included, do indeed lose total interest in 3D at lower convergence. I'll take you at your word that it at least makes for a good playthrough and better than 2D. I'll probably still hold on before playing, even if I'm dying for some AC.
RAGEdemon's comments regarding his recommendations about the best 3D settings are more debatable. 3D is what it is, an incredible technology. Pop-out or not, there is no single "best way" to experience 3D, just whatever your brain and eyes find most gratifying. And to say too many people are playing with high convergence could really be no further from the truth.
Speaking for myself, without toyification I would not be that excited about most of the 3rd person games. AC is awesome, Prototype as well, Jagged Aliance:BIA, I cannot even imagine how a fixed Company of Heroes would look like. Have you even played Trine? The convergence levels are coded into the game, and when you crank it to full you start making 3D converts from people previously saying 3D is a gimmick)
Yes, for 1st person games I bring the convergence close to realistic levels, to help immersion, but again, even that is subject to taste.
I'm not gonna dwell on this too long, since these forums speak for themselves. They are full of testimonials of people s**ting their pants after discovering the convergence hotkeys.
==============
Another matter of interest however is touched upon with comments such as "No need to be too grateful towards Nvidia" or “Don't think for a second that they have your interest at heart”.
I will not expand too much, just to clarify that I’ve never suggested that you should be grateful to nVidia.
At least, not more grateful than you would be to your baker, butcher, grocer. They provide you with services, which you are free to use or not. If you find something better, you go to another shop, period.
When I’ll find better 3D elsewhere, I’ll drop nVidia hardware without looking back. I only have one life, I don’t have time to wait for companies to cater to me specifically (especially if there are not enough of "me" to make it a lucrative business).

If there was a standard for games with regard to convergence I would spend more time gaming and less time tweaking.
I have found my convergence settings are hugely dependant on where the game cuts the rendering of its closest object. If you have a fixed camera, setting the avatar just behind the screen might mean any tree or wall etc might pop out far too far from natural.
If anyone gives a monkey:
For 3rd person games I now set my convergence so that the cut off point is popped out but not too much to be uncomfortable. I have found this is playable and it seems to give a solid 3D regardless of the setting. (In theory!)
For 1st person games I always set the popout so the back of gun is just popping out or at the natural point. More convergence than this and it becomes uncomfortable to play because of the gun. With FPSs, this means there are times where there isn't enough convergence for effective 3D e.g. BF3 (IMO anyway).

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I know, Andy, and I think that's what RAGE was commenting on, as well.
Lack of standard setting makes people use too much and then complain to nVidia that 3D broke their eyes, I guess :-)
That's why nVidia is using a very conservative default depth and is hiding convergence. Safest common denominator - hence anyone trying this says 3D is a gimmick (not to mention that this might also be at the source of many of games with broken shaders, if developers think those default settings are what people use for 3D, and only optimise the game for those settings)
Oh, man, all this talk with you guys about 3D and especially Assassins Creed really plays tricks with my mind and soul. I've just finished Revelations for the 1st time (in glorious toyified 3D), and I've enjoyed so freaky much, despite my own espectations ...
Now some of you are throwing words at me, regarding the fake 3D: "passable, playable, better than 2D".
And my mind keeps twisting those words into "adequate, enjoyable, best 3D atm" - I need to be strong.
I want to play and to see what happens in the story, and to explore other settings than medieval Europe, etc. I'm so envious of those of you who can enjoy nVidia's latest driver tweeks...
And I guess this is the bottom line here. At least what they did still helped some people. And it's definitely more than what the developers themselved did, for their own games. (To be frank, why would they do anything about it if we still go out and buy their games in droves, broken shaders or not, and make them indecent profits?)

+1. Exactly how I set my games.
The fake 3D driver however, has a bad time with pop-out, in AC3 at least.
@Zappologist
I think you have the wrong end of the stick, my friend. Quite true that Default convergence is too low. It usually needs to be increased to levels which andysonofbob suggested above, but IMO not increased so much that it ultimately subtracts from the separation (once hacked to be >100%).
IMO, a window to a true 3D world is better than a miniaturised toy table in your face.
Of course, you are welcome to disagree ^.^

Just to clarify, I said default "depth" which is 15% irrc, not default "convergence". I don't even dare comment about the default convergence, probably different for every game, probably too low indeed, and probably for the best - as long as the option is not hidden and is well advertised (maybe shown in the 1st use tutorial) so that the users can tweek it to their taste.
Also, maybe the user's reaction/immersion for monitors is much different, you and Andy are perhaps using projectors which I've never used.
I understand your position regarding toyification, and I already said that I agree with you , for 1st person games. For 3rd person, I think the fact that you have to imagine that someone is running around with a camera behind the protagoninst is somehow silly enough not to require lower convergence just to keep the "true 3D world" illusion.
Toyification seems to work best in these cases, and I think it's a quite exciting option to have. Judging by the comments on this forum, most people would agree.
But who cares, this is really subjective, and like I said, I really envy you if you can enjoy AC3 and 4. Who knows how long I'll still have to hold out...

I think toyification looks much better on a smaller monitor than it does on a larger TV or DLP screen, I don't really like it much on my 65" DLP, I think you can get away with more popout/convergence on a smaller screen just like you can with separation('percentageofthescreen-wise') Pretty sure I read somewhere that the 'comfort' zone was equal to your IPD on both separation and convergence, like an X. Of course all of it is user, game, and screensize dependent ... maybe even viewing distance. Personally I like my FPP games to be all depth, like a V, and my TPP games to be mostly aligned at the character, like an X.

Why are you holding out?
TBH, the worst part of AC3 was the performance. I am very sensitive to low frame rates and micro stutter. The low FPS was far more distracting than tha fake 3D. I actually thought the 3D was quite well done.
Take my opinion for what it is - just an opinion from an old time stereogamer - chances of having AC3/AC4 fixed for 3D vision are very slim. IMO, there is no point in waiting.
Unless you want better performance. Then by all means, if you can, I would wholeheartedly suggest waiting ~3 years for a couple of generations of CPU/GPUs to pass.
AC3 is CPU limited utterly. It seems to max out 2 cores and then nothing more. The game seems to run on only 2 threads.
So, If I'm getting 30FPS on the worst areas such as Boston, and you need 60fps for a smooth experience, you would need a doubling in clock frequency from my 4GHz. Each intel generation maybe increase clock for clock performance by ~20% every couple of years. You can't go faster than 5GHz really any time in the near future due to the physical properties of silicon. By this calculation, it would take ~4 to 5 generations to reach a CPU which would able to run AC3 at 60fps in the worst areas on only 2 threads. That would be about 10 years wait. (more realistically 3 generations and 6 years as 20% increase over previous gen, not current gen).
If you want to wait, great, you are of a strong mind.
I waited for 2 years for AC3. I'm glad I didn't any longer only because for me personally, AC3 was not as good as the others.
IMO, right now, with your current excitement about the series, and this new driver, I think you will get the most out of this game by playing it now than waiting for years to play it when (if) it gets better, because by that time you will have lost interest and you will have built it up in your mind so highly that you will probably be disappointed :)

Get away from me, (rage)demon! You evil temptress!
I will not give in to your satanic lure!
:-)
Yes, I've waited for 2 years as well, stupid and stuborn of me, more than being of a strong mind, perhaps (or perhaps thanks to the blessed Steam sales and the holy backlog). I should probably take your advice and play it. For the moment, I resorted to installing Brotherhood again ...
Regarding performance, I think I'm like you, very sensitive to low FPS and stutter. Now that your comments make me think about this, I realise that I don't have this problem in games. Anything I throw at the rig I build a few years back runs very smoothly, even Skyrim 3D with crapload of mods. So maybe I'm just too privileged to realise. But yeah, the reason I hold out has nothing to do with waiting for better frame rates (although I never tried AC3).
I have yet to decide, but your comments really start to weigh heavy on my determination.
PS
By the way, talking about my hardware, I had mentioned a few lines in my signature. But I cannot see this signature (or the avatar picture) in my replies. I only see them when I press Preview before posting, and of course when I edit my profile.
Sorry to go offtopic for a nanosecond, do you guys have that happen to you too? Seems I'm too noob to sort it out.

I would like to think that I have a pretty decent rig for todays games. I don't have a problem in most games but AC3 / 4 are something very special in that they are horribly optimised for the PC - they use a new bloated DX11 engine, not the one used by previous AC games. Most of the time my GPUs stay at around 50~ with only 2 cores maxed on the CPU; all delivering ~30-40fps in cities etc. If you hunt around, you will see that everyone is having performance problems with these games.
The only worse optimised game that I have seen is prototype 2.
Why not give AC3 a go? Decide for yourself if the 3D and performance is liveable?
If you have modified your sig recently, the mods may have to review it before it is allowed ^.^

Thanks Rage for the reply. I've only recently added a signature and profile picture, so that must be it.
Strange, regarding Prototype 2 performing worse that the new ACs, I cannot rememeber any performance issues at all. I toyified it to the max and got some gorgeous screenshots out of it. Perfect 3D with Helix fix, over 60 FPS at all times. But AC3/4 performance issues are prbably more generally spread, you're not the first person I've seen mention it.
I think you convinced me to give AC3 a go, I'll buy it in the Easter Steam sales, maybe until then the fake 3D driver will be out of beta.

Did they really update the text on http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-games.html
"NVIDIA 3D Vision® automatically transforms hundreds of PC games into full 3D right out of the box--without the need for special game patches"
I suppose it should read "Thanks to our loving community the 3dvision technology is not dead yet. Those guys wrote themselves a wrapper and fix a shitload of games for everybody to use for free alll you have to do is visit helixmod website. If you dont know how to download a fille from the internet and copy it over to where you installed your game we have a solution for you - its called fake3d but its amazing as you dont have to do anything and you can enjoy all the games rated as excellent (just dont adjust convergence, oh well its hidden anyway)."

Very True :)

Nothing official yet - most likely will see more game support announced in next driver release; followed by hopefully more games in the next after that with hopefully some of the refinements discussed here. That's about all I can say right now. So stay tuned, I will be release news as I can.

==============

@Zappologist

[MonitorSizeOverride][Global/Base Profile Tweaks][Depth=IPD]
