Alice: Madness Returns (Crashing with 3D enabled)
  1 / 6
EDIT: FIXED (Moderators, 314.07 drivers have broken this game in 3D) Hey guys, Has anyone else had or is having problems running Alice: Madness Returns in 3D with the latest drivers? In 2D the game runs fine. With 3D enabled it crashes at the main screen after I press enter. If I turn 3D temporarily off (ctrl-T) it still crashes, meaning I can not get this game to work in 3D. - First it just hung the program, and I had to close it manually, but now it comes up with win8 dialog box (this app is not responding immediately) I have tried with and without the helix mod fix, both have the same problem. If anyone has this game installed, it would be great to know if this is a current driver problem before I go routing around trying to solve the problem. Cheers Note: This is an up-to-date steam version. EDIT: For anyone wanting to play this in 3D, install Nvidia 306.97 Drivers and all is good, even with all settings on max and with Chiz's fix found on helix mod (thanks Chiz). Thank you everyone for your quick reply's to my problem, and especially to teardropmina for posting the correct answer. EDIT2:
This game CAN be played with the latest 314.21 drivers, however one of three things will happen: 1. The game looks perfect (mostly) with the 3D image of Alice and proper placement of shadows on her. 2. Alice is displayed, however the shadows are fubar. 3. When you select the player name the game locks up. For me the game worked fine after a default instal however after tweaking the in game Video settings (everything turned on) the game simply locked up upon selecting the player name. Finding and editing the 'AliceEngine.ini' file and setting "AllowNvidiaStereo3d=False" fixed the lockup but left the shadows on Alice (and in game) looking fubar. Exiting the game and changing "AllowNvidiaStereo3d=True" and "UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True" fixed the lockup AND the shadows. If you have #1 above feel free to find 'AliceEngine.ini' and change it to 'read-only' in case you accidentally wander into the configuration screen and change a setting (or futz with the Nvidia profile). I had this problem, it seemed like the game would crash if I turned on 3d vision and launched the game without having 3d enabled in game settings. Try launching with 3d vision disabled, turn on 3d in game settings, quit game, then launch with 3d vision.

I tried this at first, but followed your advice again in-case I did it in a slightly different order. Unfortunately the problem still persists. I have also put all the settings on low as to rule out PhysX problems etc. But it seems to crash as soon as a 3D image is trying to load. You don't still have this game installed do you?

Do you use tridef? Maybe it was causing the conflict, I had this problem a few months back so it is hard to remember what I did. Even when you close tridef, it still runs in the background at times. Make sure it is absent from your process lis when you ctrl+alt+esc. Also 3d is much better in the game if you remove the 30fps frame cap. It is easy to do, jst gotta edit a txt file.
Do you use tridef?
Nope, only NVidia 3D and not other 3D software is installed on the PC. Thanks for the FPS pointer, I will defintily do that if I can get it to work. Disabling the movies has also been a godsend to speed up fix testing ;-) Maybe 314.07 drivers have broken 3D in this title? can anyone confirm this?

I do have the game installed but I'm in California so I won't be able to experiment with my settings tonight, too late. Tomorrow I will have a look though if the issue remains unresolved.

aw, cheers CeeJayll. Yeah that sounds great. I'm only going to waste another 30 mins on it today and then I'm going to wait to see if it is or isn't an Nvidia wide driver problem.

I was using checkerboard 3d, unsure if that makes a difference. May be a stupid question but do you have a proper 3d resolution set? I know this game makes you confirm resolution setting but not any others, so at times i thought my resolution was saved when it wasn't. May have disabled post processing too but unsure.

Do not uninstall and reinstall the game, that doesn't help. A clean driver install may work if all else fails though. You may find thatnhelix mod is unnecessary with this game too. Good luck buddy.

Tried it in forced windowed mode, no help. Tried with all settings on minimum or off (e.g. post proc) problem still occurs. Driver uninstall will be my next port of call, I just naturally put it off to last as a deep clean is a pain in the arse.

This game often comes out as one of the better games to play in 3D, so the current drivers really should support it. Will load up an older driver and report back.

I have tested it, it works 100%. So just role back your drivers if you want to play this. Hopefully a mod will pick this up and pass it onto the relevant devs. Would be cool to have direct thread that was to do with games that have been broken by driver updates. We desperately need stickies for such a thread so mods can easily find it :-) Thanks again for everyone's help.
