Really? On the newegg ad it said 3D tv play ready. If that isn't the case, SWEET!
Just checked again, the newegg ad has the 3D TV play ready nvidia ad on it by mistake. You can see in the picture of the unit it says 3D Vision ready on it. Thanks for the good news!

I have no idea why it says 3D Tv play, the acer h5360 is hdmi 1.3 and uses 3d vision. Unless they stealth updated the product to hdmi 1.4. There is a product called acer 5360BD which is hdmi 1.4 but I have no idea why it says the normal one needs 3d tv play. It even claims in title Acer h5360 3d vision ready. I even bought my 5360 from newegg years ago as well. Regardless you can probably EDID override and force it to think its a normal 5360. Though I think its just a typo on neweggs part.

While I doubt it is a problem in practice as you probably won't sit 4 feet away from the screen it is definitely certain that a 720 projector has 225% larger pixel area compared to a 1920 monitor given the same FOV.

Such a shame we are becoming dependant on this community (mainly because of Helix's DLL) to make these games playable in 3D. Thanks to Helix, are game selection would be limited. I also have to mention thanks to eqzitara for all of his efforts in keeping us informed and maintaining the helixmod blog. I for one cannot go back to 2D. Time to time I will surf the web and search for a way to play the following in 3D and I do recognize that these are OpenGL.
Knights of the old Republic 2
Gothic 1
Gothic 2 Gold Edition
Pray
What is compelling about these games is they are what I call true PC games with excellent gameplay elements. I am still hopeful that something will surface one day for these titles. I was blown away when I found out about this thread

How to make the Thief series and System Shock 2 playable in 3D. Simply amazing. Can't believe these games are well over 10 years. In 3D, these games definitely hold up in todays standards, especially on the gameplay aspect. I can't go back to 2D, everything looks so flat.....

At least if we run out of PC games to play, then it would be a good time for some emulator goodness, I recently tried Dolphin wii emulator and there are a LOT of games that play really well on 3d with 3d vision. My only issue is that I cannot quicksave with it, at any moment I try to alt tab out of the emu it crashes, but you can still save ingame.

I'm not sure how "dead" 3d gaming is. Newer games seem to have no support. On the other hand, I notice on forums that the 3D hate is starting to fade away. Maybe that's because 3D in movies is fading as well.
I think there are a few reasons why it is not as popular as it should be:
1. It's not cheap.
2. You have to see it yourself and give it some time to get used to.
3. You need glasses (this seems to be a BIG issue for a lot of people, headphones are cool, glasses are a no-go area, unless you're sitting in the sun, or while snowboarding)
4. Most gamers today seem to be happy with what they got. If everybody would like to have the best experience out there, nobody would game on a xbox or ps3.
5. 3D on current consoles is a joke (and a very bad one too)
6. 3D really started in times of bad economy, that certainly didn't help.
7. A lot of people out there don't even realize that you CAN game in 3D, nor do do have an idea what it will add to their gameplay. I saw it in a shop once, and I was not impressed. Yet, when I bought a 3D monitor a few months later because I needed a good monitor anyway, I was blown away.
There is a good reason why the iPhone got so popular. When Steve Jobs showed it for the first time, everybody immediately SAW with there own eyes how cool it was. It wasn't like: "you have to try it!".
I personally hope that when the consumer version of the Oculus Rift arrives, things will change. There are a few good things going for it:
1. It will be relatively cheap
2. The immersion level will be beyond anything we have seen before, the idea of being IN the game will appeal to many, VR is something you can imagine without having tried it yourself.
3. Hopefully it will be available to the next-gen consoles as well
4. The consumer version will be more consumer-friendly because it will probably have a better display, headtracking etc. than the dev kit. Maybe (and that's really important!) fast positional tracking.
5. John Carmack loves it, so do many other big names in the industry, as well as many (not all) of the journalists who have tried it so far.
Just my few cents...

You know as much as I agree with this .. I really don't think NVIDIA comes cheap. I bet is like "we will help you with 3D but.. whos your 1st born?.. hehe just playing but you get the point.
And to get paid for helping duh is only right. So we can't always blame NV.
And with Helix.. you would think NV would be all over this.. to make it work better and faster. Bring more sells in.. blah blah.. so who knows.
I will say I am getting tired of NEW GAMES and no 3D. And if there is you have to hope some other guy that has a life and not the time will do it. Maybe..just maybe some guys like that need a donation.

In 2009 I tried this 3D Vision and I was not impressed, thought it would be over in some months time. But I was wrong and one day I decided to buy the monitor and glasses. Now I complain about the glasses not having enough battery hours.
I love playing in the third dimension and I do not play in 2D mode anymore. It is simply too boring for my taste and I love when you "get" a jet plane right into your face. Fortunately it is only visual or we would all be dead by now. I got no headaches, eye strain and so on.
The occulus rift is not something I would buy, yes it is virtual 3D, but how will you control your character and what about the sound?
Could be awesome watching a movie with it though.

The rift is kind of like swimmer's goggles(except much more massive on the goggles), you can easily wear head phones. Its probably easier to wear headphones with the rift then 3D Glasses tbh. In the previews/reviews they wear headphones with the much bulkier prototype.
If you are person who needs to see keyboard it will be hard but you can still use controllers easily.
That said I am still unconvinced of its success at this point. I think its a luxury device, even if it does get a following. You plug it in play it and enjoy a truly immersive game. You unplug it and you wait a few months to plug it again. Tridef said they will try to support it which may change things. Also some modders are looking into supporting but Im not sure how they will compare to 3d vision/ tridef.

3D is such a tough thing to recommend atm. Had someone told me all the pros, cons and requirements, im not sure i would have been so keen to start the journey. I honestly cant think of a single piece of technology in the last 10 years that has so many moving parts, levers and switches.
That said, i absolutely love it, and really struggle to go back to 2D. its hard to explain what is good about 3D other than my brain works better in games with 3D as opposed to 2D.
Playing Crysis 1, 2 blew my mind. Ive just started the Witcher 2, cant wait for Far Cry 3 to get a decent 3D profile. BF3 is waiting for Witcher to finish. and when Crysis 3 comes out...
OT: how do you guys find an LCD monitor in terms of immersion? i have a 65" series 8 sammy running checkerboard 1080p and i sit about 1-1.5 metres from the screen so everything is more or less real size. i find that really helps my brain get fully immersed.
Just ordered a second GTX 680 so that games will run smoothly, man you need a lot of kit! curse being a resolution and high detail snob!

Partquote:
I honestly cant think of a single piece of technology in the last 10 years that has so many moving parts, levers and switches.
The funny part is that it was a lot simpler pre-3d-vision times. Now everyone is trying to be a top dog in 3d and fences in their own standards, features and artificial nonlogic limitations. Add the limited 3d-features in movies, conversions, 2d+depth etc and the result is the poor mix we see today. It's just pure luck to find a good captivating 3d-experience in this mess.
Imo this is where 3d-gaming really shines. With exception of 2d-depth (console-3d) 3d-gaming is the best 3d, mainly because the level of 3d can be adjusted to personal prefered settings. Nothing will ever beat that.

It should be pretty easy to control your character. Everything works the same except your head is simply free to look around independent of your body. Ideally it would be like controlling your head movement in Arma 3, which i did using the left Alt button because your thumb controls it, leaving your ESDF movement fingers to continue moving you around. It became so natural to use just over 1.5 months while playing DayZ [read: getting killed by hackers -inside joke...], so much so that i greatly wish it was implemented in other games. By sound i assume you mean how will surround sound work via satellite speakers? If so, i think the Rift's software will allow the in-game head rotation to operate at a ratio of your real head so you don't have to move around that much, like Track IR does.
Heres a decent vid on Track IR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPQWwhQFfiY
In my estimation, you would ideally have your "aim down sights" key, which is usually the right mouse button, realign you to you weapon sights, and be a toggle key.

If so, i think the Rift's software will allow the in-game head rotation to operate at a ratio of your real head so you don't have to move around that much, like Track IR does.
Heres a decent vid on Track IR.
In my estimation, you would ideally have your "aim down sights" key, which is usually the right mouse button, realign you to you weapon sights, and be a toggle key.
