Copyright infromation Where to find it....
Hey all,
I've got a month and a bit left on my thesis (focusing on nVidia 3D Vision) and I was looking at example pictures to use. I found a few in the 3D Vision section of the nVidia site.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-3d-pictures.html
But I cant find anywhere information on copyright and usage of the images. Im mainly wanting to use a few images from quakecon2009 and the batman picture packs. I have emailed Quakecon and Eidos to see if this falls in to there copyright. I have also opened a knowledge base ticket and emailed nVidia (who never seems to reply..)

Does anyone know where else I could look, or who else to contact?
Any where to go for royalty free (or at least free for educational purposes) 3D Images?

Pretty sure those images will be copyright to the prespective publishers of the games. :(

That would surprise me greatly. When gaming magazines publish screenshots they make themselves of games they are reviewing, there aren't ever any copyright notifications near them. People have posted screenshots all over various image hosting sites, forums, and Facebook/MySpace but I've never heard of any trouble - even when the screenshots are not flattering to the game.

Of course, if there is trouble I'll just be shocked while you'll be sued. You can always double check with a lawyer to get an educated opinion.

As with cameraimages i think that the one who originally shot them is the owner of the specific images. There's a tiny chance it might work different with gamescreenshots but i don't think so. There was quite a deal of texture and model infringement in gamedevelopement (some developers stole textures from other games and applied on their own) which of course isn't allowed. Anyway: If you tells which games your images are from i can't imagine anyone would have anything to say against it.
If anyone claims special rights of the images it should be told on the specific site. Read more here: http://creativecommons.org/

From what I've read in places before I posted this, there is something called fair use. Pretty sure it means if your not slandering the game/movie, nor are you profiting it should be ok.

"Fair Use" is when you use a tiny portion of a work. Without it, our society would fall to pieces very quickly. Both "guilty" and "not guilty" are parts of other copyrighted works so simply pronouncing a verdict would get you sued for copyright infringement!

Seems to me that a screenshot amounts to a single frame of a much larger work. Hmmm... but what if the game pays for some special, copyrighted painting and includes it in a game, then I pick that painting up in my screenshot? Arg. Copyright law really gets insanely complicated.

Educational use and non-profits do get more leeway but it's definitely NOT a free ride. (If it were, we would all be seeing movies for free at our local universities instead of theaters.)

Taking your own screenshots will solve everything i think. /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Writing his own game then taking screenshots would be even better - plus we would get a new game to play! I'm for that option. /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I wonder if a graphics demo would work for his thesis? NVIDIA has a few good ones.

I'm also wondering what the copyright restrictions would be on taking screenshots (and using) the nVidia 3D Vision medial test in the thesis would be. Preferably I'd like to extract the two images from the exe and put them into my own program (to have them rotated various directions), but I am unsure if that breaks other rules and laws.
