Quake 4 in 3D
Can anyone tell what i need to do to get Quake 4 running in 3D, I am willing to build a new pc just to run this game in 3D as its my fav FPS. I have played Quake live in 3D and it looked amazing but the game is not as fun as Quake 4 (to me).Do i need to buy an older GPU with older driver version? Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Peace

Yes, I can help you play Quake 4 in 3D using the old stereo method.

Please give me the details of your current system and I'll advise you to either build another computer or add a 7 series card to your motherboard.

I'll also need to know what your current display is.

Thank you.

Great! This'll be an easy one considering that you have a DLP tech display already. It's already supported in the old 91.47 driver provided you use a reg hack that I'll provide.

The best route for you to go here is to get yourself a 7900 GTX off of ebay, and place it in one of your open PCIe slots. I notice that your P6T has another available PCIe X16 2.0 slot, so you want to make sure you get the 7900 GTX into that one and not the x4 slot for proper bandwidth. Don't waste your time getting anything else other than a 7900 GTX, as it is the fastest single GPU card of the 7 series. This means I wouldn't bother with the 7950 GX2 thinking your going to get a faster card, as most of the games in 3D with the old driver works better with a single GPU.

You're going to want to create a dual-boot setup on your machine. One with Windows 7 64 bit, which I assume you already have for 3D Vision and another hard drive for Windows XP 32 bit OS. You HAVE to use that OS to use the old Forceware and Stereo driver. There are no substitutes.

So on top of the 7900 GTX you need another hard drive and a full copy of Windows XP 32 bit, or if you already have a big harddrive you can paritition it out for another OS. I don't recommend that route however. Keeping the two OS's on different hard drives altogether is safer and more robust in case of data loss.

You will also need to get a DVI to HDMI cable to hook up the 7900 GTX to your Samsung so you don't have to switch cables between your 9800 and 7900. This just makes things easier.

And finally, you will need to get a pair of DLP Link glasses. The two that I recommend are the Xpand 102 and Optoma BG-ZD101. Both can be had on Amazon. I have the Xpand but I hear the Optoma are a better.

So to summarize here's what you need:

1) Nvidia 7900 GTX GPU (get a EVGA, Gigabyte, Asus, or MSI)
2) Another harddrive for dual boot
3) A full copy of Windows XP 32 bit (NOT 64 bit)
4) DVI to HDMI cable to connect the GPU to your TV
5) DLP Link Glasses Xpand 102 or Optoma BG-ZD101

That is the equipment you need. You can google on how to create a dual boot setup with XP, there are lots of decent sites that explain a "how-to" on that procedure.

When you get your new OS built up with the GPU, don't waste your time installing a driver for the 9800 GTX+. The driver that we will be using will not recognize that card, so it will basically be inactive and not used. And you cannot mix Nvidia drivers with different levels of GPU's. We will be installing one driver for one card, the 7900 GTX.

Once you get all your hardware, contact me again through PM here or shoot me an email to photius at sbcglobal dot net and I can walk you through the software part and help you get Quake 4 running correctly in 3D at a decent frame rate.

Best of luck and welcome to old school stereo gaming.
