Mafia 2 so same framerate with or without 3d.
The title says it all folks. I only get an average of 27 fps on mafia 2 and it doesn't matter if 3d is on or off. I also tried dedicating one of my cards to physx and then I tried auto select, but still no difference.any thoughts?

I think it's because physx is being run by the cpu insted of the gpu which is what it should be run by , I cant get the demo to work in 3d but I am using the time limit mod.

To get this to run optimally make sure you are using the latest 258.96 beta drivers, the newest 258.96 stereo 3D drivers with the Mafia 2 update, and the newest physx drivers on Nvidia's website that mention Mafia 2 in the description.

Yes , that's right. And then you get an awesome 3D experience. Really everything, including dust, shadows, halos, reflections, lighting effects, debris etc. is in perfect 3D, even the mirrors. The cars look fantastic, as does the water (including waves and reflections). The level of detail is just crazy. I already spend hours just running/driving around, looking and playing with the physics. And I'm into 3D since over 10 years. But this level of quality also impresses me. Can't wait to see the full city and the additional weather effect (rain/snow) in 3D.

The only thing I would complain about is that the AA option does not work, neither via in-game setting (just off or on) nor the forced setting via the nVidia control panel. Since my 3D plasma HDTV is only 1360x768 checkerboard, AA would be very appreciated.

I also complained initially about the locked convergence setting, having in mind that I was forced to play Avatar (which also had locked convergence) with a setting I totally disliked. But luckily Mafia 2 uses a setting which comes much nearer to my taste, and finally the 3D is great in-game and in cut scenes (which are also all in 3D since rendered in real-time) without the need to readjust.

Btw I get acceptable framerates (20-30) with all graphic settings maxed and PhysX on medium on my single GTX280 in 1360x768 3D.

I've just tried out Mafia 2 in 3D with the newer 1.34 3d drivers and physx drivers and I loved the experience. Therefore the lack of convergence really sucks big time, cause without it we get just a simple 3D experience. I was even more amazed with GTA IV EFLC in 3D which doesn't have a 3D profile, rather than Mafia 2 that is a 3D Ready title.

The Physx in this game are awesome, you see pieces of the exploded cars, bricks, glasses in the ground and Vito's jacket moving like there's a wind going through it, pretty nice stuff. But I didn't felt that 3D changed the game's graphics to the point where it gains life, like Left 4 Dead 2 and Just Cause 2 for example. All I've notice was the added depth, all the rest was the same.

The game looks gourgeus in 2D and I'me sure If the final version give us 3D Vision users the convergence feature, I'm sure the 3D experience will be 2 or 3x more impressive than we've seen so far. I really believe that.

Nobsi,

What Plasma TV are you refeering about??? Is that the Samsung Plasma 4 series, 42" (1280 x 720) and 50" (1366 x 768) that were released a few years ago??? Are you enjoying than in 3D, I heard they look cool but suffer from to many ghosting, is that right??? I always would like to know how 3D Vision would look on these Plasma's TV's.

I've just bought a Samsung FULL HD 3D TV 63" C8000 but I have to wait for the 3DTV Play to be released by Nvidia. Your Plasma TV uses the 3D Sync that DLP TV's use. The new Samsung Plasma 3D TV's uses HDMI 1.4, so it's a different way to connect to the PC. I've just bought it and the store haven't delivered it yet.

I just hope 3DTV Play is released soon, so I can try out Mafia on it, It will look amazing, I'm sure......

Hmm I'm wondering what the problem is, because for me the predefined convergence is really optimal. But I must say I'm not the popout 3D effect guy, because this settings mostly gives the game world a miniature feeling. I'm always adjusting the convergence as if my monitor is a window into the 3D world. Everything feels to have real sizes then, especially on a 50" HDTV.
That is why I disliked the locked convergence setting in Avatar and I'm comfortable with the convergence setting in Mafia.

I would however commit that it would be best to let the player decide which setting he ultimately wants.
If 3D-ready means the confergence is locked, that would be really a step backwards. Hopefully many people complain that this will not get the standard.
Is that the Samsung Plasma 4 series, 42" (1280 x 720) and 50" (1366 x 768) that were released a few years ago???
It's the 50" version since the 42" has only 1024x768 pixels but in 16:9 format, which would mess up the aspect ratio of most games.

This plasma uses checkerboard like DLP HDTVs and is therefor compatible with all 3 major 3D drivers (TriDef DDD, nVidia 3D vision and iZ3D DLP license), so I can use the best driver for a particular game.
With iZ3D I can adjust the convergence in Mafia II, but there are some anomalies with the current iZ3D driver while nVidias newest driver works perfectly with Mafia II, so I prefer it currently.

There is indeed some ghosting with this TV, but not more than I used to have with my old Sony FW-900 CRT setup. I got used to it, so not really a big problem.

But I'm also looking at the new full HD 3D plasmas (especially from Panasonic) and hope to be able to get a 3D demo somewhere with the new nVidia 3D play software. Heard that ghosting is much less than on my old Samsung plasma. I'm worried however that 1080P @ 24hz would not be sufficient for a good gaming experience and 720p @ 60Hz is roughly what I have already with my current HDTV.
