  1 / 5
Hi All,

Any further news on the release of the new vista stereo drivers as i'm dying to use my new shiny 22" Zalman screen which arived yesterday.

I tried it on Xp but i have the new 8800GTS 512MB (G92) which doesn't seem to work with the 162.50 drivers, as it says my card is not supported in those drivers.

Thanks will teach me for buying such a new card.....lol.

The official word is first quarter 2008. Unofficially, before March.

You can get the details at mtbs3D.com in the front page news section. (01/08/08 update from NVIDIA).

I'm hoping to get my hands on a Zalman too for testing purposes. Check out what Dave Cook (head of stereo driver development for NVIDIA) demonstrated the drivers on.

The existing XP drivers MIGHT work for you, but you will need to modify the driver by adding your GPU to the list. I strongly recommending waiting for the actual drivers though. Very unpredictable stuff with the old XP drivers. I think it would be wise to just wait given the GPU you are using.

Chopper

Well i hope it's before then as I had heard by the end of January that's wy i went out and spent a small fortune on the new card and the the Zalman 22" screen. i would be really annoyed if it's delayed further, i mean how many years do they want to get a nw driver sorted as it's been ages since 91.31.

Chopper how to you modify the drivers ? I tried using the 162.50 but it said my card was unsupported and wouldn't let me install. If there is a way to do that would go back to xp and give it a try.

To be honest, I don't know how off the top of my head.

One thing I have tried is uncompressing the NVIDIA Forceware drivers. When you run the drivers, and get the error that your card isn't supported, the drivers are still uncompressed at that point. You can usually find them in c:\nvidia\XXX, etc.

Then from the device manager, I go to the display driver, update the driver, and select the NVIDIA driver directory as my source. That should work for you.

MAKE SURE YOU RUN SYSTEM RESTORE TO RECORD YOUR LAST GOOD SETTINGS. Also, you are doing this at your own risk, but I don't anticipate and permanent harm.

Neil

I have a GeForge 8600 GTS running on Windows Vista with a Trimon 3D monitor from Zalman and it seems to work fine when watching the short sample movie in 3D, but I'm a bit worried about small text in 3D. When I put the shades on (3D glasses), all the text arround the 3D window looks really bad, with black lines going through, which makes it really hard to read. Will that also be the case when the 3D steeo driver is out, or will the stereo driver do something to compensate for this and make the text readable?

Also ... does anyone have any news on the 3D Stereo drivers for Vista? I see that the FAQ on Zalman webpages still shows January 2008 as anticipated release date for the drivers. I've posted a query on Zalman's International Q&A pages 2 days ago, but have not received a reply. Now I've noticed that they have a separate Q&A section for USA customers, so I've just re-posted my question there. Let's hope they will make an effort to post a reply. I'm anxious to experience online games in real 3D :)

when you mention to the test, are you referring to text in the smaple movie ?

Another point i have noticed is ghosting seem to be apparent in the sample movie. Orug have you noticed this too ?

Which GTS do you have ? the older G80 version or the new G92 ?

I didn't know there was more than one version of the GeForge 8600 GTS available. Is there a place where I can check this, without having the packaging? I've thrown mine away a while ago.

As for the Text, I'm reffering to all the text you see on the screen outside of the 3D window. Like the Window Titlebar, Menus, and icon names on the Desktop when you run the video inside a Window. It doesn't matter wether the text is in Black color on White background or the other way arround, it's always with a lot of lines going through. Maybe that's just because my eyes are trying to make sense of something that doesn't belong there with the rest of the image being in 3D.

Also, when I look at white surfaces without a texture, I see a raster of dark horizontal lines. It's very evident on that white square sign on the right part of the screen, in the first part of the movie (carneval or something).

Anyway ... moving video looks good in 3D, but only once I find a good position for my head and set the monitor and my chair so that I can sit still while watching. If I raise or lower my head even a bit, I get to see ghost images. If I get closer or further from the screen, the 3D effect disapears and I see 2 unrelated images in my left and right eye. In other words, the distance from the screen, the height and the angle at which I look at the monitor have a high impact on ghost images and the overall 3D experience. But the fact that I see horizontal lines through all text remains, no matter what I do.

PS. I have the 19" Zalman and use it at 1280x1028.

Oruq

Chopper i was asking the questions to Oruq....lol.

anyway Oruq, the way to find out of you have the old or new version is easy. if you card has 320mb or 640mb of ram then it's the older G80 type card, but it it's got 512mb am it's the new G92 series which is quicker.

with regards to the text, there's nothing wrong with your screen or the 3d display, it's becuase the glasses are circualr polarized which causes it.

Normally you would not use use the 3d into windowed mode, normally it should be used full screen, so when you look at text in the bacground of the screen, which is not in 3d with the glasses on you are effectively looking at something you're not supposed too.

If you have any more questions, please let me know.

One thing i'll say is that i was disappointed with the sample Dvd until the fish scene came on, that was amazing to have have a fish swim from the depths of the screen right out of it to be swimming around about 12 inches out of my screen right in frot of me..........that was cool.

My GeForge 8600GTS has only 256 MB. That was the only 8-series GeForce they had with a passive cooler. I've been playing most of the games in 1024x768 or lower so far, so memory was never a problem, but I might have to replace that card when I start using it in real 3D, which works only at 1280x1024 with my 19" Zalman monitor.

About the blury text ... I thought it had to do something with the fact that I wasn't supposed to see that. To see how the monitor works with the glasses, I started Paint and drew a thin black horizontal line with 1 pixel width. I was quite surprised to see that, after placing my 3D glasses on and looking at that "image" with my left eye, I saw a 2 pixel wide horizontal line, while my right eye saw nothing of that line.

Then, I drew a thin red line directly underneath that black line, also 1 pixel wide. And ... surprise, surprise ... now I could see a black line 2 pixels wide with my left eye, while seing a 2 pixels wide red line with my right eye.

That made me realize what was happening when I looked at the text on background. My left eye was seing all even horizontal lines of the text, while my right eye saw all odd horizontal lines, with all lines duplicated to fill the "empty" space, which resulted in 2 different and "incompatible" images being sent to the eyes.

It also made me realize that I will actually see 3D images in 1280x512 when using a resolution of 1280x1024 on this Zalman monitor. I guess the stereo driver will know how to draw text without losing pixels, so I will hopefully be able to see it normally, but I will probably need to use larger fonts when playing online games in 3D, so I can read it.

Well ... the 2-pixel wide horizontal line seemed quite thick, while the same line in 1 pixel seemed rather thin. Now, I'm even more curious to see how the text will look in games when using 3D stereo. Does anyone have any experience playing online 3D games with chat using the Zalman monitor (on XP?) or some other 3D monitor? Would I be better off using some other 3D monitor, or is Zalman a good solution for real 3D?

PS. I've tried using shutter glasses before (a few years back), but I wasn't happy with the results, so I wouldn't go back there. I've also tried the VR helmet, but the resolution there was awful and I couldn't get used to the image fallowing me when I turned my head.

Oruq

I have just received a reply from Zalman about Vista drivers for the 8-series of nVidia cards and I have to say, I don't like it. Maybe I've misunderstood something, but it looks like they do NOT plan to release drivers for GeForce 8xxx, but that only 5xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx stereo is planned for now. :'(
