Any other 3D Vision users pick up a 3DS?
  1 / 2
So now that the thing is finally here, have any other 3D Vision users taken the plunge?

My 3DS arrived from Amazon today and I'm overall pretty impressed. Since the 3DS's announcement last year I've been really looking forward to the first true mainstream 3D gaming solution, especially being an auto-stereoscopic one, and I think my anticipation has been rewarded nicely. Being a 3D Vision user, I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the depth (much like I was with Avatar), especially since I use 3D Vision with 100% depth at all times, but for such a small, low-res screen I think it's at quite a nice level. Just a few things I've noticed in list form, some mixed pros and cons, mostly just about the Stereoscopy since that's what this board cares about:

The sweet spot is pretty small, but you still have quite a bit of wiggle room to the point where you don't really have to think about it. I find my subconscious does the work, automatically keeping it centered on the best effect. As you tilt the screen left/right, the sides of the screen start to distort a bit and when you're in the sweet spot the entire screen is evenly bright, so it's easy to know when you're in it.

It was nice seeing a completely ghost-free stereoscopic image for the first time, and not needing glasses was pretty nice. I'm so used to having the tint in front of my eyes from 3D Vision that it just felt refreshing. I had a laugh though when I tried to take off my prescription glasses to see the separation level, and forgot they weren't 3D Vision glasses. The only real way you can check separation is to look at the 3DS screen at an extreme angle.

The low resolution of the display and the general lack of anti-aliasing is pretty noticeable when in 3D, especially since I'm used to 1680x1050 + 4xAA in most PC games with 3D Vision. The jagged edges really stand out a lot.

When playing AR games that use a crosshair for aiming, I was surprised to see.....the crosshair is in 2D at screen level! This is something Nvidia has taken into consideration and I'm surprised that a mainstream solution like the 3DS hasn't. Even at maximum 3D level, though, the separation is never too large that aiming between the two crosshairs becomes a major problem. But it is pretty noticeable. I'm hoping full games that use a crosshair will features a 3D one.
Overall I'm glad I got it, and I can't wait until thursday when I'll be able to pick up some games for it. I used all my last paycheck's spending money just pre-ordering the 3DS.

This makes me really excited for when larger auto-stereoscopic displays come down in price. I can't wait to use 3D Vision with this sort of tech on a larger screen!

I picked up one on launch night. Went a little overboard buying games since (Toys R Us still has the buy one, get one half off sale going on). I too thought I would be a little underwhelmed with the 3d, having used 3D Vision for a few years, but it's been great. I actually turn it down from the 100% setting for a few games. It's nice to play games where the 3D isn't just an option tucked away somewhere in a menu, or where I'm dealing with elements that are rendered incorrectly in 3d that ruin the experience. It just works, and as a result, the games feel much larger than the small screen would imply.

The sweet spot is a little small, and has taken me some time to adjust, but as you stated, it's becoming second nature to keep things in focus. I've had the various DS versions since they first launched, so the jaggies don't stand out to me (and I'm pretty obsessed with AA on the pc). Also, if you have only been using the various built-in functions, I think you'll find the jaggies less distracting or noticeable in the retail games. The battery life is a little on the short side, but part of that is because I've been playing as much as possible since Sunday.

The Street Pass features are really neat, and finally Nintendo has an online system that supports universal friends, notifications when your friends are online, and other features that, while obviously in their infancy, are huge step in the right direction. The 3DS itself is very well designed, compact, and shows attention to detail everywhere (pictures really can't do the finish any justice, you just have to see for yourself).

So, yea, to cut a long story short, another 3D Vision user here that loves his 3DS too. Try Ridge Racer (if you're in to racing games) or Pilotwings for some great 3D effects.

I preordered and picked it up Sunday morning. At first I was wasn't really into it. I did think the 3D was so cool, I mean seeing 3D without the glasses was impressive. But the games I grabbed made me wish I didn't spend all that money at first. But after a few days and more time playing, I am really getting into this thing.

Street Fighter IV:
While the highest rated game, I am gonna trade in. I really hate fighters and never ever play them. I was kinda hoping since they made it more beginner friendly I would get into it, but I just can't. I am sure its awesome, but like I said I am not into fighting games. The 3D is decent but not outstanding.

Super Monkey Ball 3D:
Really kinda like this game although my attention span with it, makes me put it down after only a couple levels. But I think its a decent game and nice to pick up and play if you only got a few mins. The 3D is pretty good, and helps sometimes with gameplay.

Pilot Wings:
Lucky for me I never played it on the Wii so this game is brand new to me, and I am really thankfull for that. This is my favorite 3DS game at the moment. I am addicted to trying to get Red Stars on all the levels. The 3D is really cool, and I am enjoying this game.

Ghost Recon Shadow Wars:
At first I was not into this game, but after playing a few levels, its really addicting. I am historically not good at strategy games, especially once the tutorial levels start to wear off and I am left to my own devices, so we will have to wait and see how it goes. But as of now I really like this game alot. The 3D is terrible and completly useless, but at least its the most "Hard Core" game next to maybe SF.

So far though, the AR games and Face Raiders is the most impressive thing about the system. Taking pictures of friends and having them play around with the AR cards or face raiders really shows off the systems 3D and tech. It just makes people smile and have fun. I think there is alot of potential with the system, and after seeing some image comparrisons of the new Ocarina vs the orignal...holy crap that game is gonna be so fun. I loved the origianl and can't wait to replay it in 3D with updated graphics.

The software lineup is pretty sad at launch, a few decent games and one or two good games depending on what genre's you like, but the real joy is gonna be over the next few months waiting for the RE games, Metal Gear, Zelda, Mario's and such...the future is gonna ROCK!

I'll definitely be picking up a 3DS at some point, but I'm going to wait a year or so until the 3DS Lite (or whatever they'll actually end up calling it) comes out, which will undoubtedly have better battery life and physical design. Plus I'll be giving it some time for more games to come out for it, like the Ocarina remake, which is the main reason i want to buy one ever since i heard about it :D

Until then, I'm really hopeful for a 3DS emulator :)

I'm only an nvidia "legacy-driver-user" but got a 3ds. I also got really impressed by the augmented reality features and captured some stereophotage it (for now they're only cool demos to show the tech but who knows in the future... :P ).

One thing I noticed is how well the 3D Vision cleaning cloth works for cleaning the 3DS. It seems to be fabricated to work better for soft plastic (the cloth that came with my hard plastic prescription glasses doesn't work as well and just further smudges the 3DS) and a quick wipe brings it back to factory shape. I've gotten into the habit of cleaning it every time before I play and I'm hoping I can go a few months before my first scratch/permanent marking.

how'd you record that? That's impressive first person 3d, I didn't think anyone would be able to capture the 3d effect of the 3DS. In fact you may be the first.
It's a bulky rig and i don't want to move around too much with it. It's good enough to capture the ar gameplay though. The rig is simple: Two aluminiumbars in an angle which always holds the stereocamera in the 3ds field of vision. :D
Glad you liked it. It was fun doing it too!

I got mine from day one and I'm quite happy with it, the 3d is good, the design is very nice to carry around everywhere, I'm fine with battery life since I used the PSP previously and that didn't have good battery life either, and the interface is really good and friendly, and I'm still amazed how well online play is integrated now after playing SSF4, and overall the online experience is rather good.

About jaggies, it depends of the game, SSF4 and Lego star wars among others have pretty good AA, while ridge racer, pilotwings have lots of jaggies, so I'm hopeful we will see a lot more AA in 3ds games with more development time. Also about ghosting, same thing here, games like SSF4 or monkey ball don't have any ghosting, but to my surprise lego star wars and Rayman have lot of ghosting in some parts of the game and/or cutscenes.

The bad news: I'm having some problems here and there with the console. Some errors that you wouldn't expect from a console and even less one from nintendo with some games, I'm playing a lot of SSF4 and the dpad is giving ugly noises already, the lack of online messaging or the internet browser icon that does nothing, sometimes it doesn't recognize that a game is inserted and you have to remove and put it back again a few times. I always expect from Nintendo only the very best on quality control and both firmware and hardware are lacking a bit right now.

short game reviews:

Ridge racer: amazing 3d depth for a portable game, maybe the best 3d right now for the 3ds, the game looks good with some nice textures and good framerate and it's a lot of fun, recommended.

Rayman 3d: lazy port of rayman 2 from dreamcast, it's still a great game and even though it has a lot of ghosting mostly in cutscenes, the 3d works well ingame, with lots of effects like butterflies and leafs giving good 3d and nice depth overall in every stage.

Street Fighter 4: Clearly the game where Capcom proved everything good about the 3ds. Rock solid framerate, good AA, no ghosting whatsoever, amazing online, and the 3d is really good for a fighting game. I hope this gets updated to the AE version of the game soon.

Lego star wars: Very nice game, mostly shows the kind of graphics 3ds will be able to do, very good textures, lighting, animation and AA, although framerate can take a hit sometimes. The 3d is so-so even with the 3d slider maxed, but thankfully all the cgi cutscenes are in 3d and look great. Besides it's a lot of fun.

Pilotwings: Mixed feelings. The 3d is good but I was expecting more from a flight simulation, sometimes it feels like just two levels of depth, your character and the stage, still it's quite nice and it's a fun game.

Monkey Ball: The 3d effect here is really good, almost up there with ridge racer, both in the puzzle game and the kart game. Controls are really nice with the slide pad working very well, a solid game overall.

Mine arrived yesterday.
I think the screen is really nice, close to 0 crosstalk in the sweetspot.
It was nice to play games actually designed for stereo.
My only issue is that the sweetspot for the screen is borderline for playing anything fast paced, playing ridge race, I'd often move the device or my head enough to end up with two images, I'll probably learn to p[lay without doing this, but it was irritating.
Like many console launches the initial titles are average at best, but that will change.
