Ok just ordered, but curious how would image quality of this projector compare to the uhd40 projector that cost twice as much

That's a hard question to answer.. With projectors particularly, you have to consider the environment you're using it in and the type of source material. I don't think anyone's ever done a side by side comparison between these 2 models. On paper, this is probably brighter, has less accurate colours and might have more so called rainbow effect, due to the colour wheel that is being employed. But, it's significantly cheaper, it uses the older DMD which has a higher native contrast ratio, plus it will accept a 4k source and a HDR source, so although it can't show a 4k image, it can show HDR and will downscale a 4k image. Image quality isn't always an objective thing, it can be subjective too. A brighter punchier image with oversaturated colours might look better to some people, but to others it would look terrible as it lacks colour accuracy etc. I haven't seen either device, but I'd hazard a guess that you'll be perfectly satisfied with this if you're gaming, watching sports and watching the odd film too. If you have a light controlled room and watch a lot of films (particularly 4k bluray), the UHD40 might be significantly better..
Ok just ordered, but curious how would image quality of this projector compare to the uhd40 projector that cost twice as much
Pretty darn good honestly. The amount of 4k content vs 1080p at the moment is still not worth a 4k display upgrade imo. Couple that with the fact that this projector can accept 4k input plus HDR beamed out at 1080p, you are occupying a pretty comfortable middle ground. Also, most 4k projectors with 0.47" DMD chips use what some refer to as "faux-k" or "pixel shifting" to mimic a native 4k resolution, which some may find undesirable at the current price point.

Plus IMHO I have to disagree with your comment about the price, as you need to spend about 5000 Euro/Pound/Dollar for a 'native 4k' display and the difference is very hard to discern. I understand why people disagree about 4k and why they argue that it's marketing taken too far, but it doesn't change the fact that the so called 'faux-4' is by far the most efficient solution for the money.

wow, thank you for the info, the price is pretty low, do you own it ? are you using nvidia glasses ?
I do currently own this projector and I am indeed using the Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses. There were a few pieces of information that I needed to add last night though. The projector is very low latency at most times(3D mode included) with about a 16ms input delay at 60hz with enhanced gaming mode selected, which is about 1 or 2ms more than my current ASUS PG278QR G-Sync monitor, so it is very snappy. The amazing news is that it can reduce to 8.3ms input lag at 120hz in 2D mode when enhanced gaming mode is ticked, which is as low as a CRT display!!! Now on to the slightly less positive news. When using Nvidia 3D vision in fullscreen mode there is an error message that says it is using an unsupported resolution at 1080p 120hz. This problem is easily defeated thanks to the work of Helifax and the 3D Fix Manager downloadable through the Helix Mod blog. There is an option within the 3D Fix Manager to disable on screen display messages like the one reporting the resolution error. The only downside to this approach is that you lose the depth slider OSD. This is only a slight annoyance but if you ever tinker with convergence settings then this should be no problem, as convergence has no OSD. Also, when you get Nvidia 3D Vision working with the glasses, you might notice a slight green crosstalk anomaly that is easily fixed by a combination of lowering the contrast a few ticks in combination with turning down the green gain a bit within the projector menus. I followed a calibration guide and added the lowered contrast and green gain along with it to find a suitable image that is still much brighter and clearer than my previous projector, the Viewsonic PJD6531w.
Thanks for posting your results here, this is super, super tempting. I wanted to pick up the UHD40, but the price and requirement for new glasses has put me off for the time being. Also bought a PG278QR recently under the assumption that 3D hardware is going to be disappearing, so kind of busted the budget already. Amazon US link: https://www.amazon.com/Optoma-HD27HDR-Lumens-Theater-Projector/dp/B07GYJ7MBP Being able to use my 4 sets of working 3D Vision glasses is super attractive. Anybody follow projectors closely enough to know if this one is about to be discontinued or anything?
Ok just ordered, but curious how would image quality of this projector compare to the uhd40 projector that cost twice as much
Interesting - on Amazon.com the projector only costs 579$ (=515€) which is indeed about half the price of the Optoma UHD 40. But on amazon.de Optoma HD27HDR costs a lot more: 765€ (=860$). So in Germany the projector is not as attractive as in America.

I usually don't see projectors being discontinued until several years after release. When I found out that this projector could work with Nvidia 3D Vision with just an EDID edit I was so excited to finally have 1080p 3D projection that I scoured Ebay for several more pairs of Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses

The Optoma HD29H is still not available in my country but the other new 120Hz Projectors from Acer the Acer Nitro G550 or Acer V6520. They are as Nvidia 3dtv play listed. What you think is there a chance to get them working in 1080 3d with an edid override?
should I go for a high gain screen with this? I could have a light controlled room if needed. You might get bad hot-spotting on a higher gain screen with how bright this projector is. Also, if you get a higher gain screen you will be sacrificing your wider viewing angle. If you have any movie nights with lots of people sitting at wider angles, a high gain screen is not ideal.

Don't worry about the screen until you decide where you are going to place the PJ and the image size that you can obtain. Also check out Craigslist or Offer Up (if in the US), you never know if you might come across a good deal. I bought a $4000.00 135 inch Flush Mount Slate Grey screen for $150. The guy had it warrantied because of slight wrinkling on the bottom lower corners. They sent him a new one and told him to do whatever with the old one. It was less than a year old and made by Screen Innovations. Of course paint is always a viable option, if the wall is flat/untextured. I used a painted screen for a several years, but it seems that the sheen is no longer available. This worked until I used another wall that had a window in it, hence the need for an actual screen. https://www.projectorcentral.com/paint_perfect_screen_$100.htm?page=Paint-the-Screen Of course there are many options if you choose to paint, AVS forums has many paint suggestions using different formulas Such as Missippi Mud among others.

got my projector and tried it out on my crappy beige colored wall that has a pretty rough surface, did not look very pretty and quite dim. When I move into my new house It will have a moderate grey paint , I think I will want a white screen . Since I am used to having my 55C6P oled tv is very bright. I want to get close to that as possible.
