I think it's because generally speaking, there is greater pixel density on a 23" monitor than a 55" HDTV. Image is brighter and defects are smaller. I'm defining pixel density as pixel count per degree of vision, not the pixel count per linear inch of the display. So for a given display/resolution, pixel count would be proportional to the distance from the observer to the screen.

I thought about that Roller, it makes sense. But tell me, why 3D movies, no matter if it's bluray3D, SBS, Frame sequential, any type of 3D movie, low or high quality look far better in a 3D ready TV compared to those 120hz display we use for 3D Vision?? The 3D quality and mainly ghosting issues are much less pronounced in the 3D ready TV's, Plasma even less than LED, compared to those LCD 120hz display like Samsung 2233RZ, Alienware OptX 23", Acer among others when viewing 3D movies.
3D games are different somehow, most games I've tried using the 3D TV have more ghosting and crosstalk than the LCD 120hz display and It should be otherwise, since those 3D ready TV's, Plasma and LED should suffer less from crosstalk issues like it's the case with 3D movies. That's something that intrigues me.
We both agree that a 3D ready TV, LED or Plasma, has far better 3D quality overall than a LCD 120hz displat, don't we? So, it must be the drivers that makes some games look worst in those 3D Ready TVs compared to the 120hz displays. Or maybe the 3D layout Frame sequential used by 3D Vision is somehow superior than frame packing and other 3D modes such as SBS, Checkerboard and page flipping. It's hard to figure it out...

Does anyone know if you can add a 1920 x 1080 resolution in the nvidia control panel under the PC section , NOT THE HD OR CUSTOM SECTION, my samsung led will only do checkerboard if I pick a PC resolution
and 1680 x 1050 is the highest it gos right now,this is under HDMI 3 btw.
I can access checkerboard if I use the HDMI/DVI 1 input and name the input PC but then the picture looks washed out and terrible.

Im thinking/hoping the new driver that enables checkerboard will also include a 1080 resolution in the pc section not just the HD/SD section in the control panel

I think all 3DTV's only accept 3D in 1920x1080 or 1280x720, but I'm not sure though? I didn't know about this checkerboard using PC Resolution you mean 16:10, is that what you call PC resolution? Cause laptops and PC displays are being manufactured as 16:9 ratio, so I don't think there's no such thing nowadays as 16:10 for PC resolution.

What I mean by PC resolution is entering the nvidia control panel , going to the resolution section , there you will see an HD/SD section with a list of resolutions under it, a 3d section and a PC section . Under the PC section the highest resolution available is 1680 x 1050, which works with checkerboard (un grays the checkerboard option) , it also resizes the screen and puts borders around the sides. I have tried making a custom resolution but it does not get placed in the PC section. And again my LED Samsung looks worse when using the PC/DVI input and renaming it PC(this did help the lag though).

I keep hearing about checkerboard being the ultimate and the samsung tv's offer the best gaming experience because of the checkerboard option. I am not to clued up about this so any advice will be appreciated. My understanding is that checkerboard was an older 3D option hence the reason most of the main manufactures ditched it and implemented Side by Side (sbs). So my understanding is that sbs can do exactly the same as checkerbaord (ie 1080p gaming) but every 3D tv has this. So I guess my question is, Why push for checkerboard when the only TV that can do that is samsung?. It makes more sense to push for SBS which every 3DTV can do. I have a Panasonic 50VT20 and i dont want miss out on the potential of playing 1080P games.

Donandy isn't asking "why not 1920x1080P/24 Frame Pack?", he's asking "why not SBS 1920x1080/60?"
I've viewed both SBS and CB in the same game, black ops. There is no difference at all visually or in framerate. Only Samsung owners are pushing for CB because it is already working, fully developed, and in the drivers. All nvidia needs to do is take out a single line of code that says "if HDMI1.4 is detected, disable CB mode" then release CD1.46. It would take like 15 minutes to do this, but so far it's been 5 weeks and counting so obviously Nvidia lacks the will to perform this simple quick task.
On the other hand, SBS does not exist so it would take far longer to develope SBS.

So I just stumbled upon this thread and it has really been very informative, but I'm still left a little confused. I've been wanting to jump onto the 3D bandwagon for a while now, and have been planning to do it in the next few weeks. I have a Mitsubishi 73 inch DLP 3D Ready TV. My plan was to buy the Mitsubishi 3D Adapter, a pair or two of glasses, and then use Nvidia 3DTV Play to play 3D games (once I upgrade my Radeon 4890 to a newer Nvidia card). It wasn't until tonight that I found out that 3D gaming with HDMI 1.4 was [i]presumably [/i]not possible in 1080p @ 60FPS from a friend of mine. Now after finding this thread, it seems that "checkerboard format" is planned to be added in a future update (hopefully soon!) or I can use this mod to solve the problem? I've read over most of the thread and that seems to be the case. I'm just wanting to make sure I understand correctly before dishing out money only to find that I'm stuck playing 720p to get 60fps.
Here's some questions that would REALLY help me out if I could have answered:

-Am I missing anything? Is there a better way that I have not mentioned?

Also kudos to Andrew for actually listening to the community and planning on patching this stuff in based on everyone's feedback. They just stole a customer from AMD.

-Is the best/most affordable thing to do seeing that I have a 73 inch DLP checkerboard compatible 3D TV in the other room to buy the Mitsubishi 3D adapter and TV-compatible glasses, ignoring 3D Vision and only using 3DTV Play?
-Am I missing anything? Is there a better way that I have not mentioned?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I'm usually pretty tech savvy but all these compatibility/framerate issues are confusing me for a change. Also kudos to Andrew for actually listening to the community and planning on patching this stuff in based on everyone's feedback. They just stole a customer from AMD.
Is your Mits HDMI1.3 or HDMI1.4? Below I'm assuming HDMI1.4, so my answers are totally different if 1.3.
1. Checkerboard is only in 3D Vision, not 3DTV Play. You will use the Nvidia emitter from the 3D Vision kit and the TVs glasses. CB is technically 1920x1080/60 per frame, 1 frame= one left image + one right image.

Ditto the free trial from TriDef but get them consecutively because TriDef D/L is not renewable. Both Tridef and iZ3D offer both CB and side by side modes.
Two reasons for doing this: you get first hand experience with competing full res 3D gaming solutions so you have a frame of reference when you get 3DTV Play or 3D Vision. Also, you can play games in 3D ful res 1920x1080P while you are waiting for Nvidia to get around to fixing 3DTV Play/HDMI1.4 3D Vision. There are predictions that Nvidia will some day offer CB in 3DTV Play and HDMI1.4 3D Vision but who knows when that will be? You will buy at least 6 weeks by using these trial D/L so you may have continuous coverage. If fixed 3DTV Play is not out six weeks from now, you can always renew the iZ3D trial. Either way, you can start 3D gaming immediately instead of weeks/months from now.
An extra reason for the trials is that iZ3D and TriDef offer SBS. For Samsung plasma/LEDs owners, this is unimportant. For DLP owners, this could be crucial. That's because CB doesn't work that well on DLP sets, there's a definite 'screen door' effect which the Plasmas and LEDs don't have. And yes, I'm talking from first hand experience, not 'some guy said'. So it's possible that SBS is the mode of choice for DLPs. I no longer have a Mits DLP so I can't test it.

But tell me, why 3D movies, no matter if it's bluray3D, SBS, Frame sequential, any type of 3D movie, low or high quality look far better in a 3D ready TV compared to those 120hz display we use for 3D Vision?? The 3D quality and mainly ghosting issues are much less pronounced in the 3D ready TV's, Plasma even less than LED, compared to those LCD 120hz display like Samsung 2233RZ, Alienware OptX 23", Acer among others when viewing 3D movies.

What I mean by PC resolution is entering the nvidia control panel , going to the resolution section , there you will see an HD/SD section with a list of resolutions under it, a 3d section and a PC section . Under the PC section the highest resolution available is 1680 x 1050, which works with checkerboard (un grays the checkerboard option) , it also resizes the screen and puts borders around the sides. I have tried making a custom resolution but it does not get placed in the PC section. And again my LED Samsung looks worse when using the PC/DVI input and renaming it PC(this did help the lag though).

I keep hearing about checkerboard being the ultimate and the samsung tv's offer the best gaming experience because of the checkerboard option. I am not to clued up about this so any advice will be appreciated. My understanding is that checkerboard was an older 3D option hence the reason most of the main manufactures ditched it and implemented Side by Side (sbs). So my understanding is that sbs can do exactly the same as checkerbaord (ie 1080p gaming) but every 3D tv has this. So I guess my question is, Why push for checkerboard when the only TV that can do that is samsung?. It makes more sense to push for SBS which every 3DTV can do. I have a Panasonic 50VT20 and i dont want miss out on the potential of playing 1080P games.

Here's some questions that would REALLY help me out if I could have answered:
-Will utilizing checkerboard format and achieving 1080p @ 60fps only require Nvidia 3DTV Play? Or will I also need 3D Vision and Nvidia glasses?
-If I don't need 3D Vision, but perhaps plan on getting it down the line to also 3D game in my room with a monitor (the 3D TV is in the living room), is there any brands of 3D glasses that would work for my TV and for the Nvidia emitter so I can avoid having to buy two different brands of 3D glasses?

Here's some questions that would REALLY help me out if I could have answered:
-Will utilizing checkerboard format and achieving 1080p @ 60fps only require Nvidia 3DTV Play? Or will I also need 3D Vision and Nvidia glasses?
-If I don't need 3D Vision, but perhaps plan on getting it down the line to also 3D game in my room with a monitor (the 3D TV is in the living room), is there any brands of 3D glasses that would work for my TV and for the Nvidia emitter so I can avoid having to buy two different brands of 3D glasses?
-Is the best/most affordable thing to do seeing that I have a 73 inch DLP checkerboard compatible 3D TV in the other room to buy the Mitsubishi 3D adapter and TV-compatible glasses, ignoring 3D Vision and only using 3DTV Play?
-Am I missing anything? Is there a better way that I have not mentioned?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I'm usually pretty tech savvy but all these compatibility/framerate issues are confusing me for a change. Also kudos to Andrew for actually listening to the community and planning on patching this stuff in based on everyone's feedback. They just stole a customer from AMD.
1. Checkerboard is only in 3D Vision, not 3DTV Play. You will use the Nvidia emitter from the 3D Vision kit and the TVs glasses. CB is technically 1920x1080/60 per frame, 1 frame= one left image + one right image.

4. if I were you, I'd do the following: Before spending any money, get the free 3D driver trial download from iZ3D. In some ways, it is better than 3D Vision. Ditto the free trial from TriDef but get them consecutively because TriDef D/L is not renewable. Both Tridef and iZ3D offer both CB and side by side modes.
Two reasons for doing this: you get first hand experience with competing full res 3D gaming solutions so you have a frame of reference when you get 3DTV Play or 3D Vision. Also, you can play games in 3D ful res 1920x1080P while you are waiting for Nvidia to get around to fixing 3DTV Play/HDMI1.4 3D Vision. There are predictions that Nvidia will some day offer CB in 3DTV Play and HDMI1.4 3D Vision but who knows when that will be? You will buy at least 6 weeks by using these trial D/L so you may have continuous coverage. If fixed 3DTV Play is not out six weeks from now, you can always renew the iZ3D trial. Either way, you can start 3D gaming immediately instead of weeks/months from now.
An extra reason for the trials is that iZ3D and TriDef offer SBS. For Samsung plasma/LEDs owners, this is unimportant. For DLP owners, this could be crucial. That's because CB doesn't work that well on DLP sets, there's a definite 'screen door' effect which the Plasmas and LEDs don't have. And yes, I'm talking from first hand experience, not 'some guy said'. So it's possible that SBS is the mode of choice for DLPs. I no longer have a Mits DLP so I can't test it.
