F.E.A.R. 2 busted in 3D?
  1 / 2
I've always liked the FEAR games, the battles, then fear is an interesting combination, and the battles remind me of Halo, which I always liked. Trying to play FEAR2 in 3D, but I'm getting a crash at launch. If I remove Helix's d3d9.dll, I can play fine, but the 3D is naturally not as good. I've tried all the usual methods of fixing these crashes, and can't see anything. No overlays running (including no-steam), tried other drivers, different profiles, asking eqzitara for help- the usual. :-> So, if someone has this already installed and can do a quick test of whether it is still working for you, that would be very helpful. That will tell me if something changed game wise, or if it's my system. The reason this is interesting is because I had this working just fine last week, but we just crossed over the GameSpy day of death. Don't spend any effort on it, but if it's just a click away, it'd be helpful to know. TIA.

I completed Fear 2 in 3D many years ago with no any modes. Yes, stereo has some problems but the game plays good enough. IMHO =) (postcount =P)

Just tried and got it up and running with Helix Mod. Went pretty smooth but started with blank screen problem. Disabled 3D Vision completely and got it running and finally re-enabling Helix Mod dll.

Awesome, thank you for trying this out for me. Since it runs on your machine, that means it's something wrong with my setup, so I'll dig deeper.

Thought I'd report on the solution, since it took so long to figure it out. Right about ready to reinstall Windows, but ran the Process Monitor tool, which reports on API's being called, and file system accesses, and lots of other nuts and bolts. That suggested that the Steam overlay was being loaded, which I specifically disabled as part of testing. With that in mind, I uninstalled, then reinstalled Steam itself. And voilà, that fixed the crash. Frickin' strange bug.

Interesting, I'll have to try and take a look at Deadly Premonition with that. I can't even get it to start, tried any and every suggestion on the Steam forums to 'fix' it but nothing works ... hopefully that'll show something. You kind of get used to the fact when buying something that it may not work well, or sometimes even at all, in 3D but not even working at all really sucks, especially when they rush out the port and then don't seem to be supporting it.

I have the overlay disabled but *every single game* I play now (for about the past 1-2 weeks, so perhaps the same timescale as you, can't remember when it started) always displays this in an error dialog when I exit a game. Maybe a recent Steam Update messed things up? I am not having trouble launching games though, so it's not too awful for me.

Yes, "steamoverlayrender.dll" was the dll that I noticed with Process Monitor. That would make sense that it's a Steam bug, as it auto-updates all the time, and could easily have introduced a bug. Worth giving a reinstall a try. Hide your main library games, otherwise it deletes them all upon uninstall. Also worth noting is that reinstall took me off the Beta list. That could be it as well, reverting from a buggy Beta to a release version.

In the interest of understanding, I also just opted-in to the Beta in Steam, and tried FEAR2 again. Boom! Crash at launch with Helix installed. Opt-out: runs fine. Steam Beta, now introducing game incompatibilities for Helix. Thanks. Edit: reported bug to Steam. It would really suck to have all Steam games broken with Helixmod.

Just a thought, did you try using the injection version of HelixMod?

I'm running Helixmod games just fine with the Steam beta (I don't have FEAR 2).

Nope, didn't try injector version. Already spent 3 days jacking around with 100 experiments, so motivation is low. I never would have expected it to be Steam. I was literally within 1 hour of reinstalling Windows. @Pirateguybrush: good to know, thanks. Must be game specific, which means it's won't be a fatal error for us when they ignore my bug report and release it with the bug.

@bo3b I had pretty much the same thing happen when I was looking into the updated Origin version of Dead Space not working anymore, I was testing out a utility I had been working on to match new/updated CRCs to old/source/fixed CRCs ... only switching it to look at Steam/Origin CRCs. After lots of trial and error, trying to figure out why I wasn't getting all the CRCs, then figuring out there's actually 2 fixes(Origin/Steam) wrapped into one and that each set of CRCs still matched it's respective fix ... I finally figured out it wasn't even the updated version of Dead Space but rather an Origin update, the overlay specifically. If you don't run Dead Space from Origin, or turn off 'Origin in Game', then the fix works just fine ...
