Are AV receivers too much trouble?

Maybe some other technology from Dolby?
I've said it before, PC sound throughout the years is a bit of a convoluted mess. Just like 3D adds to immersion, sound can as well, with a little work. Or virtual surround can be used with decent results for those that desire a plug and play experience.
Yes, the biggest change happened between XP and Vista when the Hardware Abstraction Layer was removed. Newer games mostly use software sound engines anyway, so it doesn't matter. Most older games used DirectSound3D (hardware mode) with or without EAX. They can no longer use these technologies since Vista out of the box, but ALchemy fixes it for both DS3D and EAX. Other older technologies like Miles Sound were software based anyway, so they were not affected. A3D was another hardware based technology but less popular than EAX. As far as I know, only Aureal Vortex cards had hardware support for it, and they went out of business long time ago. I agree that sound adds to immersion, just like 3D. I started using surround sound system with my PC long before 3D Vision. I used active 5.1 sound systems connected to a sound card via analog outputs for many years, and then I switched to an AVR. I'm not a big fan of using headphones for anything other than listening to music on the go though. I always prefer real surround.

I have a denon X4300h. It works fine with 120Hz but I had to manually add the resolution. Some receivers don't pass 120hz but it seems most of the Denons have for years. With this kind of setup it's probably good to get familiar with Toastyx's CRU, as you might need to edit the various EDIDs to manually add various things such as Atmos/HDR etc. Good luck!
