The April 2012 US edition of PC Gamer has two pages of reviews for 3D Vision 2 tech. First review is for the new Asus monitor. He knocked it for its price and a little for its not-so-stylish design but said the 3D looked "amazing" and gave it a 90 and an editor's choice. The new glasses didn't fare as well. The reviewer liked them but they pinched his head: 73.
There's also a little article on the state of 3D gaming that's very positive. He does warn people away from 3D that are mostly into the competitive multiplayer games. (I definitely agree with that. Immersion and realism are nice to have in those games but speed trumps all.)

I agree with Libertine, s-3d adds a competitive advantage in shooters and racing sims, the only limitation could come on the hardware side, if the machine for s-3d isn't as powerful as the other competitors pcs for plain 3d and this leads to lag and dropped frames. Other than that I am a much better shot and racer in s-3d, due to the better measurement of distance.

Prior to this, when the UK PC Gamer reviewed 3D gaming (March 2011), before I opened the mag I told my wife what they would say (eyestrain, expense, 'wow' factor soon goes AND told her what games they would talk about: WOW and L4D (in 2011!)) - I was right.
I wrote a letter to PC Gamer (published May 2011 - IIRC) in response to the article. The reply was the standard sticking to the eyestrain, lack of point and price arguement. I was suprised the price arguement because in the same issue PC Gamer positively reviewed a keyboard costing well over £100. A 3D setup can cost less than £300 and you get a new monitor for that.
I think 3D is another example where professional reviews are at loggerheads with public opinion - look at consumer reviews regarding 3D on Amazon etc and (taking into account standard deviation) they are VERY positive compared to so called professional reviews.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

What do you expect, until gaming studios keep referring to 3d as a niche market, there won't be enough 100% 3d-ready content to back a possible purchase. This is not the same as reviewing a GPU or a monitor, where you know that if it works as specified you can recommend it. 3d is a gamble for anyone, who hasn't experienced it, because you may end up not being able to play the games you want in stereo.
Another problem is that most of the reviewers haven't even tried s-3d. I've listen to Invisible Walls podcast on GT and I am certain that were it not for the 3ds the guys there still wouldn't have tried playing in s-3d. I doubt any of them have 3dtvs to play on the ps3 in s-3d and best case scenario they've only seen Uncharted 3 or GT5, PC being a mere afterthought in most reviewing medias. These people can't and won't recommend s-3d, but they don't mind speaking of the negative effects, following a 5 minute test on E3, where they probably had trouble focusing. So it is quite normal for user reviews to be positive and proffi reviews to not know what the f. they are talking about.

I really don't agree that S3D gives you a competitive edge in FPS games. Seriously, with it turned off, your eyes are focused on one plane of depth only, no need to change focus depending on distance etc, this can make it a lot harder to say, spot a guy about to knife you, when you are too busy trying to snipe somebody in the distance and thats where your focus is. Granted, it does make you a bit more accurate at long distances, but i'm accurate enough regardless personally and the focus thing really puts you at a disadvantage. One type of genre it doesn't really matter either way is RTS games, I played DoW2 competitively with it turned on with no problems (using the right convergence etc), it wasn't perfect but it really didn't hamper my playing style in that particular game. The immersion it gives to single player or RPG games on the other hand, where absolute perfect twitch reactions aren't needed - is fantastic - I just wish more games didn't use rubbish like 2D icons etc =( It just feels like a cheap way out because they couldn't be assed to make 3D models or locations for everything. There are older games, such as Titan's Quest that are just fantastic in 3D because almost the entire game was just made well, no corner cutting, they weren't even trying or thinking about stereoscopic 3D, they just didn't cut corners with their effects... I heard they did a little bit in the expansion tho but I never did play that.

The article was written by somebody named Andy Bobson... wait, what!? /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> OK, just kidding, but still it's not like PC Gamer has some overbearing editorial comittee. If two different people write reviews then you'll get two different opinions. (A pity that somebody with more patience didn't write the review for X3: Albion Prelude.)
