James Cameron's AVATAR - THE GAME (Demo) ...a look on "James Cameron's Avatar - The Game
5 / 6
It worked pretty good for me with the previous drivers as long as I did the 3D through forcing it on instead of in-game. The new drivers I can't even get my monitor detect. lol. :\

Well, it's clear that this demo is completely unstable or maybe those new drivers 1.16 related to this game.
Everyone has different issues, so every case is a different one.
I renamed the .exe to Avatar and now the game profile is recognized. It's rated excellent by Nvidia.
Now I was able to run the game without crashing right at the start. But after I clicked on new game, boom!!!! Crash to desktop.
Then I tried to run the game again and hit Esc to go faster to game's options and before entering the game's menu my system locked up and I had to reset Windows. That was the first time my PC locked up in 6 months I think. It's a totally stable system, I can't believe the game was able to lock up my system.
For the third time I tried to run this game and this time I was able to play the game for a few minutes but while I was flying the ship, Boom!!!! Avatar demo has stopped working.
I give up, really WTF.... I was able to play this demo flawlessy with drivers 1.13 and didn't have one crash so far.
With this new driver 1.16 I just can't play this demo anymore no matter what I do. At least after renaming the .exe I can get into game's options and try to run the game but it will eventually crash anytime. Using the old name avatardemo.exe I coudn't even get to the game's options without crashing to desktop.
In Avatar game's options I have 3D enabled, AA disabled, TV's format 3D Vision Nvidia, 22 inches for monitor, 3 feet distance, and all filters maximized, 1680 x 1050 , 120hz. Is there anything wrong that I'm doing???
I guess I must wait for these upcoming driver that will fix all these issues.

Really, I wish we knew what was going on with the driver fix. Suddenly there is this new driver that is supposed to fix the issues with Avatar and it by far made more problems than fixed. I don't even understand why it was released at all. It makes completely no sense.

Ah, I should make this clearer, my mistake:
My gt 285 was not recognized by the 3d vision set up program. After I installed the new driver and the screen pops up where you can select if you use 3d vision or 3d discover, I chose 3d vision and then it gave me the message that my gt 285 would not be 3d vision compatible. Inspite of that it still works as good as before the new driver. Only the avatar demo is giving me the described trouble (slow framerate mainly). Avatar recognises my gt 285 though.

Oh I see. Was wondering if it was applicable to it not seeing my monitor, but definitely not. :P No 3D Vision if the set up doesn't recognize your display.. :(

In order to make it perform better with the new drivers for me (at the moment) the only choice is lower graphic settings significantly:
Most impact is due to shadows - setting these low alone almost heaves the game into the playable area. Lowering terrain and vegetation is helpful too.
I can set textures to ultra high, many other things, too.
Now by doing this the game loses some of its glamour, obivously (it's like playing at night, but without the glow). Still, to have this deep 3d and rather fast frames with 3d crosshair is funny.
Ah, I recommend setting the depth effect to one (middle of the scala). Otherwise when deeper your soldier gets too close to you (for me, that is). Covergence can't be controlled separately here, so the depth is the way to go.
Modifiying Image quality in ingame options gives many extra frames, but I can't stand that blurry look.

I have tow GTX 280 in SLI so I think I can handle this game with all settings maximized and AA2x. I was playing with almost 30fps average using drivers 1.13 but since I installed these new drivers that were supose to make the Avatar demo more playable actually made it unplayable.
Can anyone tell me if there's any difference in the game's graphics if I disable the in game 3D and only use the 3D Vision drivers??? maybe the crash to desktop I'm getting everytime I try to play the game is related to that.
But if the in game 3D enabled makes all the difference in 3D effects, like pop outs for example so I prefer to wait for a driver fix rather to play this demo with less 3D effects.

It makes a difference. I can't quantify it but it looks better with this enabled. I ran with fraps last night and the framerate was around 25fps most of time (sometimes it would go over 30 and there were a couple of dips to 20). Not a great framerate but it never reached a point that I felt was unplayable. I did have physics set to medium, 2xaa, maybe vsync was off(?). Have you guys tried it with fraps to see exactly what framerate you're getting? Also you didn't mention if you renamed the file to Avatar.exe. It won't recognize it if you don't.

Me too man!! After I installed the new 1.16 drivers I can get to play this game. It was perfect with 1.13 but not anymore. If I disable the 3D in game option I can play the game without issues but the game will be in 2D instead of 3D. With these new drivers I think you have to enable in game option in order to play in 3D.
I was having fun analysing the game's beautiful 3D effects but now I must wait for a driver fix in order to try out this demo again. These new drivers just made the game unplayable, I'm getting CTD all the time.

Yes, I did rename the .exe to avatar to make the profile work. Before doing that I coudn't even get to game's option without crashing with these new drivers, after renaming the .exe I can get to game's options but If I try to actually play the game it will crash eventually.

Did someone find a way to adjust the convergence setting for the in-game 3D? I use to play with strong separation to have maximum depth, but with the current convergence setting the player character shows up in front of the screen and is clipping with the screen edges all the time so destroying the 3D illusion.
The external nVidia 3D driver on the other hand allows to set the convergence to a convient value, but there are some anomalies (mainly with the water) and the cross hair stucks at screen depth.
There is rumor about a new nVidia 3D driver version, but will this fix the above issues so that in can be used as an adjustable alternative to the in-game stereo or will it disable external stereo for this game completely?

While waiting for improved drivers and patches (I don't have technical problems per say but performance is lacking) I can say that DX10 runs better than DX9 for me.
In DX10 mode though it auto-windowed the game after the first bull appearance.

In DX10 mode though it auto-windowed the game after the first bull appearance.
