Go to Nvidia Control Panel, in the 3D Vision configurations choose to enable keyboard shortcuts to change the convergence, and in the game hold ctrl + F6 until everything gets near the screen (for me it took maybe 5 seconds). If you pressed it for too long and things got out of the screen, hold ctrl + F5 to push everything back. Keep playing with these shortcuts until you get a good convergence. When you're satisfied, press ctrl + F7 to save it, so you won't need to do it every time you open the game.

You can also just scroll the wheel in the back of the IR Emitter too... right?

I can move right up against a pole or something in game without it disappearing. Likewise I can only walk up with my nose against a pole in real life :p
That's what I'm saying - "right up against a pole" in skyrim is still 1-2 feet away since the game won't let your character get that close. Use something that you can actually walk through (tree branches, bushes, etc..) instead.

I thought depth and convergence were the same thing?
Nope. Depth is the size of the range from the closest object you can see to the furthest. Although most games are pretty good at 1:1 depth and should therefore be set at 100%(Skyrim is one of them), a depth of 100% is not always the best, because you can stretch this range far beyond what it would be realistically (for example, a distance in the game that is supposed to be 4 feet can be manipulated to appear 5, 6, 10, 20+ feet by extending the depth percentage to beyond what it should be).

Convergence is how close to your face the closest objects you can see are. This is commonly referred to as "pop out". A low convergence means that everything appears at the same plane as your screen, whereas a high convergence means that stuff will "pop out" at you from in front of the screen. Although pop-out is fun, higher is not better - if objects that are supposed to be large (buildings) appear as if they are directly in front of your face, they will look like toys and break the illusion of reality. (Some people like this effect - see the threads on "toyification")

For realism, you want to adjust the depth to match the accurate distances portrayed in the game, and the convergence so that the closest objects match how far away from your head that they would be in real life. The other big factor to getting realism right is to get the FOV right - see my comment on the previous page.

So this would be the Depth Setting on Nvidia's Control shown here? http://cb.nowan.net/blog/data/2010/07/3dvision.png
And the Convergence setting would be the scroll wheel on the IR Emitter? http://www.tru3d.com/products/images/3D_Accessories_and_Eyewear/Nvidia%203D%20Vision%20(20).jpg

This is crazy... I had 3D vision for over a year now. I have only ever adjusted the Convegence on the IR Emitter thinking that also adjusted the Depth setting on the Nvidia control panel.

Nope - the setting in the control panel and the wheel on the emitter are both depth. You have to enable "advanced hotkeys" in the control panel to be able to adjust convergence using CTRL+F5 and CTRL+F6 in the game.

See.. thats why I was confused. In the control panel says, "DEPTH". Adjusting the wheel in the back of the Emitter, the screen says, "CONVERGANCE". When I used the wheel to adjust the convergance, the depth setting on the control panel adjusted too. This told me they were the same thing.

Nvidia should fix that.

Thanks so much for the info. I have some adjustments to play with now.

ANDREW AND NVIDIA:

I'd like to use this post as yet another example of why people are so anti-3D: IT IS SO UNNECESSARILY HARD TO GET IT TO LOOK GOOD. The control panel should have these options only:

-Slider for how far away the user is from their monitor or screen.
-Screen size slider for projector screens (invisible if you have a monitor with a detectable size).
-Manual sliders for depth and convergence, for those that have trouble with 3D or easily get motion sickness.

The games' 3D profiles should use this information to correctly set the depth and convergence to realistic levels. This would be so easy to implement, and so much more user-friendly and hands-off than the current solution. The default 3D settings for most games look terrible. Just look at all the people in this thread complaining about how different their 3D looks. Why are you allowing this to happen?

If your sound output is not set to 44100hz, it's a known bug with Skyrim and the only reason I've ever had a crash.

Control Panels -> Sound -> Select your output, click Properties -> Advanced -> Default Format to 16bit 44100 Hz or 24 bit 44100 Hz.

Hm, my sound setting is at its default value (which is 48000 Hz) and I never had a single crash...

I think it's more related to a bug in the sound driver, which just happens to become visible with Skyrim.

It is actually a bug with Skyrim not resampling their sound correctly. Some sound cards will throw up, some won't. My Xonar Essence STX is set to 96 or 192Khz depending on what I last listened to, and Skyrim crashes during the intro if I don't fix it. I don't have crashes at 48Khz, but the sound still sounds static-y occasionally. Most of the onboard realtek chipsets will do the same. It's just a lazy bug coming from an Xbox -> PC port, and I would be really surprised if it isn't fixed soon.
