-Z (some Q's for NV Staff/Mods)
These are really Q's directed at any NV staff or Mods that can give a definitive answer, but if anyone has a game they've played with some good -Z effects please provide some details.

1) How many games are there on the supported titles list that provide some objects with -Z?

I'm somewhat sceptical when I see those promo graphics showing stuff flying out of the screen.
I've owned some glasses before and the only things I can remember coming out of the screen were projectiles.
Given that they move so quickly, the effect was fairly brief, running at 120Hz probably improves that a little though.

2) Are there any upcoming titles that have good implementation of -Z?
If so, what are they and what can be expected?

3) Have there been any titles that have applied some -Z for scenery?

It just seems to me that this is the most critical part of getting stereoscopic visuals accepted in the mainstream, as people go to the movies and have things flying around their heads so this is their baseline experience that all others will be judged by.
I read in one of the reviews that Nvidia have staff working with developers at getting -Z implemented in games, is this true.
I have to ask as given the length of time that the Stereo driver has been available there doesn't seem to have been much (if any) progress made on this critical point.

I would consider going out and buying all of this new hardware but only if I'm going to get what I consider to be a true 3D effect, i.e. not a +Z only world...

thanks, drayzen

you probably know most of this but some may be useful

why direct a question at mods? anyone can answer. btw nvidia representatives very very rarely post here.

Well I don't work for nVidia, but by adjusting the convergence setting (with CTRL+F5/F6) you can move the entire scene into or out of the screen. The problem with setting convergence so that you get more stuff popping out is that it looks weird when an object that is apparently in front of the screen is cut off at the edge of the screen when you rotate or move your in-game head/camera position.

For this reason the type of games which work best with pop out are those which have an (ideally central) object which moves as your view moves. For example, first person shooters (in which I set convergence so that my hands and weapons pop out), third person stuff like Tomb Raider (in which I set convergence so the main character pops out slightly), or flight sims which offer an external camera position which is a fixed distance behind the aircraft (in which I set convergence so my aircraft appears to be floating in the air between me and the screen).

I've also got quite good results in flight sims with internal views in fighter-type kockpits which have struts running parallel with my line of vision (which can be adjusted so that they seem to be coming out of the screen at me), although the effect is spoiled if I pan my in-game view so I'm no longer looking straight forward.

Cheers,
DD

EDIT: Had to spell kockpits with a "k" because otherwise the forum filter changes the word to "bumpits" lol. When the revolution comes, I hope all profanity filter software designers are first up against the wall.

Thanks for the article, I'll have a read, they always do really honest reviews, like x-bit etc.
I posed the question to staff to see what their real status was in terms of developer relations and current progress on current and upcoming titles, seeing as it was mentioned that they were active in that area, or was it just a bit of journalistic license?
It's a shame no staff participate here, I remember back in the day when Riva Zone (now gone) was the premier Nvidia web site and you could get on the forum and chat with some of the engineers, guess they don't have time for that now...
Derek (I think he was one of their PR guys) was also pretty good, I don't think he's with NV any more though.

Too funny, what are they saying about themselves when they change 'c0ck' in to 'bum', as far as I'm concerned the two should never be associated... /censored.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':censored:' />
Also, thanks for the feedback on your usage.

if You have 3D on Your monitor then
all objects are rendered with depth
which means that when they come close to Your head
they will look as if they popout of Your monitor.

NO popout = NO 3D or NO near objects.

simple as that. It's adjustable.
