Venetica - great S3D gameplay ...when using suitable settings
Venetica is a charming roll play game produced by Deck13. Deck13 also produced Ankh and Jack Keane and the graphic style is similar to these adventures. So it is not a realistic Venice like in Assassin`s Creed 2 but a very fanciful and lovingly created setting.
In some reviews the graphics are not rated very high - but that is just the point S3D comes into play. The game gains a lot when played in S3D!
But You have to find the correct settings. There were two moments when I thougth that the game is not compatible with 3D vison. The first was when starting it with the default settings (high detail): There were some strange black areas making it imposible to play in S3D.
Setting the qualitiy level to middle removed this problem. I also turned off any full screen effects as they only resulted in disturbing ghosting caused by bloom and blur effects.
I used ca. 50% depth and convergence focused on Scarlett. These settings are good for the first levels that are located in the mountains.
Sky, shadows and the HUD are all located at the right depth. There is almost no ghosting.
See pictures 1, 2
But when I reached the sea there was a second fright: objects in front of reflecting water surfaces where doubled in a strange way. Again it seemed to be imposible to continue the game in S3D as there is a quite lot of water in Venice ;)
This problem is solved by the patch 1.02! :D See below!
(But I could find a way to solve this problem:
I reduced depth settings to a very low level (ca. 10%). Now the disturbing reflection doubles of the objects coincide with the objects and are hardly visible any more. By increasing the convergence settings it is possible to provide depth to the scenery again.
See pictures 3, 4)
So I really can recommend this game not only because of the interresting story, good gameplay and fantastic scenery but also because of it's suitability for S3D /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbup:' />

i tryd Venetica too. I had to use the same settings.
Its sad that you could'nt use full screen effects. There are games where some kind of effects are not compatible with 3DV. (e.g. Divinity 2 the shadows)
I don't play Venetica with 3DV cause the full screen effects adding a lot of atmosphere.

I'm only at the beginning of this game and just have reached the outer district of venice.
So I'm looking forward for exploring the inner districts You can see in the beackground of picture 1.
Picture 2: normal sword fight (very dynamic with combos, counter attacs, spells, etc.)
Picture 3: boss fight (first one) in the shadow world
Picture 4: You can explore many houses with detailed interiors
Picture 5: sanctuary where Scarlett can meet her lover that was murdered by assassins. She's the daughter of death so she can trawel between the worlds.
Picture 6: market place
Picture 7: Scarlett just missed the gondola - luckily she's able to swim

It's a matter of taste and personal preferences.
As I don't like effects like dust, blur and bloom and prefer sharp an clear pictures I even turned them off when I played games in 2D in the past. So I don't miss them when I play Venetica in 3DV...
Luckily the settings compatible with 3DV offer correct (dynamic) shadows in Venetica - in contrary to many other games...
In Divinity 2 You can turn off at least the disturbing shadows. I didn't miss them so much as the sky in this game often is overcast and dusky.
To me some strange ghosting effects of trees are more disturbing as You can't prevent them. You could only reduce them with the right depth and convergence settings so that the ghosting is minimized in the normal view distance. And as You are able to see ghosts in this game - perhaps there are some ghosts within these trees ;)

Thx for the pix. The main character design looks out of proportion with her big head, I wonder why the artist chose to do that. How does the sword fighting feel? How responsive and accurate is it? Is sword fight confusing or exciting to play?

As mentioned before the designers obviously used a comic style that is similar to the point&click adventures they produced before. Besides from that they try to integrate much emotions into the gameplay. So perhaps they had chosen the "big head" to be able to illustrate expressively Scarlett’s emotions. Other game designers enlarge other parts of the female body to generate "emotions" in male viewers... ;)
Venetica offers a very exiting sword fight regarding the fact that it is a RPG. On the one hand it is very direct and varied (not only mouse clicking and button mashing). On the other hand it is easy and intuitive to handle, especially when using an x-box-controller. One button is for attacks, combos are generated when pressing the button in the right rhythm. Another button is for often used special attacks (parry/counter attacks). Additional hotkeys can be used for spells, special skills, etc. You can also jump aside to prevent damages or attack the enemies from the side or from behind. When You get killed there is not the usual "game over" and reloading of the last saved game. As Scarlett is the daughter of death she switches into the shadow world: the time slows down for the NPGs whereas Scarlett can move around and escape from her enemies or attack them from behind when she returns to life again. A nice feature that prevents the frustrating need to replay a level again (and again..) when You are killed.
To cut a long story short: usually the story, scenery, exploration and puzzles are the interesting parts in RPGs for me. But in Venetica the fights are not an necessary evil but really a fun to me.
@ev3
Absolutely right /yes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':yes:' />

Thanks for the compliment - but You don't know which toughts I originally wanted to express before I had to adapt them to my limited English knowledges ;)
@ev3:
I'm not the typical RPG player. So I'm interested in Dragon Age and Risen but not caught up in the hype around them. As far as I know they seem to provide the classical RPG settings and game play…? I was more exited about Divinity 2 and Venetica because of the new game play elements and interesting sceneries. And they didn't dissappoint me. It would be a shame if Venetica fails because of being published near to famous RPGs like Dragon Age and Risen or the Venetian setting of Assansins Creed 2. Not a very good timing for a debut feature… :(
If You buy Dragon Age or Risen: please tell us about their 3D vision compatibility!

Great news:
The new patch for Venetica (1.02) not only removed some bugs and improved the performance of the game. The patch also removed the disturbing effect of objects in front of water surfaces being doubled in S3D :D So now the depth settings can be set up to maximum and the convergence can be focused on the character. This offers more depth and pleasent perception than the former settings that were necessary to avoid the strange reflection effects. The demo of the game is not patched and still contains these disturbing effects.
I had the same experience with East India Company: there also had been a patch that removed disturbing water reflections and "black holes" within the harbour sceneries :)

So I really can recommend this game not only because of the interresting story, good gameplay and fantastic scenery but also because of it's suitability for S3D

i tryd Venetica too. I had to use the same settings.
Its sad that you could'nt use full screen effects. There are games where some kind of effects are not compatible with 3DV. (e.g. Divinity 2 the shadows)
I don't play Venetica with 3DV cause the full screen effects adding a lot of atmosphere.

@ev3
Absolutely right
So sorry for my poor English ;)

You can Venetica compare to The Witcher, but a little bit more mainstream ... just my opinion :) btw. The Witcher is a great game.

@ev3
I hated "The Witcher". The game where far to predestinated for my taste and were definitely made for consoles, where that kinda stuff is fine ;)

Thanks for the compliment - but You don't know which toughts I originally wanted to express before I had to adapt them to my limited English knowledges ;)
@ev3:

My original display name is 3d4dd - for some reason Nvidia changed it..?!
I decided to pre-order dragon age. (looking for a adult rpg)
I will test it, sure thing.
