Hi everybody!
When I posted my thread "Sign here if you plan to buy a 8800 for stereo3d!" (66 posts so far!) I thought that the driver would be backwards compatible, of course.
Stupid me, I thought it was so clear I didn't even mention it in my post.
Now Nvidia gave us some sort of "stereo driver" that
1) is Vista only
and even worse
2) doesn't work with shutterglasses-CRT-setups.
Especially the lack of support for shutter glasses is a kick in the face of the majority of stereo gamers. (The reason for this is clear: Nvidia/Zalman want to sell expensive stereo-LCD-hardware!)
Conclusion:
No, I'm not going to buy a new Nvidia video card with this stereo driver release!
Please sign here if you support my opinion.
Thanks,
M.
P.S.: If anybody from Nvidia reads this (but I doubt it), feel free to share your thoughts with us.

I agree. The problem is that the few guys that can afford a 700 dollar 19 inch monitor and are willing to move to vista to use these drivers, are cheering as if this would be actual good news. Does not even make business sense. What kind of niche market is it?
The "Rich Geek" segment? 3dStereo was already geeky enough. What Nvidia needs is as many adopters as possible.
So... We are going backwards... I am going to open a thread in the other vendor's forum to make clear that they can also have my money if they are just reasonable. As far as I can see, they (the others) don't have bad products and they are now in the cpu business as well... I have the impression that Nvidia is fading and becoming isolated...

These strategies to sell products are not comprensible for me. If I buy a product is because I hope future support. Nvidia is not supporting me since some years ago, and I bought some Nvidia graphic cards only because their stereo3d driver.
I´m very unhappy with Nvidia and his "support policy", making stereo3d exclusive for only one special monitor would be an option for next generation graphic cards (and I would can choose to buy or not, knowing this limitation). But I have recently buy a new Nvidia card thinking about my monitor/s, and now I see that Nvidia not only work slooooooooooow in this driver... also stole us some options only to make our hardware unusefull.

WARNING: Do not buy Zalman 3D LCD! You could end up with unsupported hardware once again! If you were f**ked once by nvidia do NOT be tempted to trust your dollar in this new combination.
I bought 8800gtx a year ago in anticipation for a 3d stereo driver that never showed up!
They will never see my dollar again until they prove beyond doubt they are worthy of it.
One or two full time software engineers was all they needed to support us. That's all. Instead they chose to pull us from our noses the entire time.

I bought new 8xxx series card few day ago and tried to use beta stereo drivers, but without positive result. So I give back this card to shop and return to my old 7xxx card. Sorry nvidia, if you havent support for me, then I dont want buy your products. :'(

Not only 8xxx series, also you can´t see stere3d with a 7xxx if you have a non CRT monitor and a driver newer than 94.24 beta, so you can't use Planar mode (two monitors + a mirror). The tactic was to include a "monitor ID" filter to limit all stereo modes if you have not the monitor that they want... only you can see anaglyph.
This is clear an incredible strategy to force users to buy what they want. Sincerely, watching this policy I asume that Nvidia does these abusive things in other ways, not only with the stereo driver. I suppose that an 6xxx users must use obsolete forcewares, because probably newer drivers only work fine with last series of hardware.... and surelly it force you to buy the newer product.
I think these "policy" is a complete abuse, and I have no more words to say about. I never hoped this from Nvidia, it is a complete insult to us, their consumers. Sincerelly, I feel like an idiot.

Nvidia appears to only support their latest cash generating hardware. They should print "new customers only please" on their website.
I'll be buying ATi hardware from now on, and have been fitting their cards to all new machines I build and recommending ATi to friends for the last few months.
I certainly wont be forced into upgrading to a zalman monitor, or installing Vista by nvidia's marketeers, and I wont be giving my money to a company that laughs in the face of its customers.

nVidia is an $18,000,000,000+ dollar company so presumably they must have at least a few people in positions of authority who are capable of counting. Someday one of them will compare the amount they make from selling cards to people with two eyes to the size of the bribe they got from Zalman for shafting all of their customers who don't also happen to own a Zalman monitor.
When they do, they'll notice that the former amount is many orders of magnitude larger than the latter, and hopefully fire whoever came up with this idiotic strategy. And if that's the same person who thought that producing a few dozen completely pointless stereo game configuration profiles per year was enough to justify their salary then, frankly, their firing is long overdue.
Cheers,
DD

For years I only bought Nvidia cards and encouraged my friends to due to their support for 3d and all major 3d hardware.
Now they have dopped 3d support for 99% of the hardware actually used and I have to use an old 7900 series card with old drivers to play a few old games. Now they are into the 9000 series cards and still don't have real support for 3d.
I'll suggest to anyone I meet to go with ATI and thier spider platform from this point onward. I feel sorry for any Nvidia employee that shows up at a public event that I attend because I will give them an earfull.

If the firing I spoke of in my previous post has already occurred and the replacement head of stereo 3D at nVidia happens to be reading this thread, here are a few suggestions on how to successfully do the job which your predecessor f*cked up so royally:
1. Hire some extremely talented driver developers and lock them in a cell until they've produced both XP and Vista 3D drivers which have a comprehensive on screen display enabling easy adjustment of all settings, support for post-processing effects, a reliable laser sight option, the ability to work with all types of setup (i.e. pageflipping, interlaced, chequerboard, planar, anaglyph etc) and, which, last but not least, don't cripple frame rates. If they appear to be slacking, poke them with an electric cattle prod, when they make rapid progress pass slices of pizza through the bars of the cell.
2. Merge this new stereo driver with the regular one. From now on all drivers released by nVidia should have 3d capability built in.
3. Set up a series of demos and games which work best in 3D and exhibit them at shopping malls, exhibitons etc. Record the reactions of those who experience 3D gaming for the first time at these events (in 3D video).
4. Ask nVidia's boss for an hour of his time and show him the demos, games and consumer reactions, all in 3D on a 6ft+ screen. Insist on an immediate hundredfold increase in your marketing budget and his unqualified support in promoting stereo 3D.
5. Write an email to every developer in the world for whom nVidia has contact info (i.e. all of them) and tell them how to make their games render properly in 3D. Also let them know that, with immediate effect, nVdia will be ceasing all support for, and promotion of, any developer or game which doesn't agree to meet the 3D standard. (The email should be personally sent by the head of nVidia). Introduce some kind of certification badge which any game in compliance with the standard can carry.
6. Insist that all your vendor partners include a pair of anaglyph glasses with every nVidia card they sell so every customer can experience 3D gaming "out of the box" at no extra cost to them. You might even consider trying a revolutionary new tactic and actually mention the 3d capability on product boxes, your website, and in your advertising. (Okay, I realise that doesn't sound too revolutionary, but apparently it never occurred to your predecessor).
7. Contact every tech journalist in the world who is prepared to listen to "the most important announcement in nVidia's history" (i.e. all of them) and let them know about your intention to ensure that the majority of all PC games played in the future will be played in true 3D. After that, contact any regular journalist who's ever shown the slightest interest in tech issues and give them the same message. Spend a significant chunk of the newly enlarged marketing budget on ensuring that all those who are interested have the opportunity to try 3D gaming themselves.
8. Sit back and watch the billions roll in as every gamer with more than one eye buys nVidia cards instead of those of your competitors.

I just want to voice my also severe dissapointment in nvidia. I've been sending them inquiries ever since the last stereo driver was produced which broke 3d stereo in the most important game to me: Oblivion. I've never recieved a response. Back when the ATI-NVIDIA rivalry first began I was an ATI fan. Then I heard about 3d stereovision and found that despite it's relatively niche following NVIDIA was the only name in the game. I wrote ATI about this... "not in our gameplan". Ok well guess what happened next? Hopped right on the Nvidia train and bought their graphics cards almost exclusively ever since. I also invested in a pair of Z800's. Drivers took a while to come out but seemed they were at least fairly stable and usable for a while. That's when SLI entered the picture. I bought twin 7800gtx's an an sli motherboard. IMO I like many others, was paying NVIDIA's tab while they made a mess of the whole situation and here's why: In order to get 3d stereo you needed a 3d stereo driver and the exact same version of the regular driver. The versions of this available were 77.77, (worked with oblivion but sli was even more lame than today (in some cases requiring hardware changes to disable/enable sli if not rebooting every time), Oblivion worked though with non-so great performance, 91.31 which broke oblivion but improved sli support to it's current ho-hum level but at least it's manageable, and then theres the new vista.... and I think others have done a good job of pointing out the problems there. Finally, has anyone tried the z800 with these latest vista drivers? maybe they still work with the z800 which is fine for me except the "upgrade" to vista but I feel the rest of you guys's pain whether or not it is the case that my situation is broken.

I certainly wont be forced into upgrading to a zalman monitor, or installing Vista by nvidia's marketeers, and I wont be giving my money to a company that laughs in the face of its customers.

Cheers,
DD

What makes you think that this might happen at Nvidia??
Is there any sign that they take notice what we say?
