Future 3D customer.. should i start now?
  1 / 2
Hello nVidia forums!

I have been looking forward to 3D since I experienced the Micheal Jackson ride at Disneyland(Anaheim CA). When the TV's started to come out I got a bit excited and just like with everything that is new I decided to wait to see how the technology progressed. I know everyone has to start somewhere but I felt the early technology could better and it has been improving. I took a notice at nvidia's early adoption but i wasnt ready to pull the trigger. Now televisions have been improving this feature and I can say the technology is going in the right direction. Personally I would wait a bit longer on a 3DTV. I came across this video http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=38&name=Video-Cards-Video-Devices while browsing for new 570 series graphic card.

What stood out from this video is that nvidia was working by receiving feed back from its customers. nVidia is putting in their money into listening to their customers and are determined to improve their product. The improvements that were mentioned in the video were great examples of a company listening to the little things that can improve gameplay/experience. As a gamer I would like to improve my gaming experience. I attempted to play with Sony's Head Mounted Display, but it was not what i was looking for in gaming. I returned the product.

Currently i am looking into purchasing what i require for 3D Vision. The price is up there so i want to make sure i enjoy what i am receiving(need to purchase graphic card, 120hz monitor, glasses it).

- To the current users would you be disappointed if someone showed you the current technology, without you having any experience with it.. as if it was for the first time? Would you have been wow'ed or question the technology?
- Do you have to "accept" how its working?
- Have you had a better better exprience?
- Ive tried 3D on the samsung tvs and they look nice. how compared to a tv experience is this?
- whats the one thing that you could change right now.. if you could.. a feature? a setting? something that bugs you?
- if you like the technology, how do you like your new gaming experience?
- If you are a bit disapointed, what did you expect differently?

sorry if i made this a bit long.. but someone will read this. Its just good to hear that a company is listening to their customers.

I took my setup to my school last year and both my collegues and students were blown away. The media teacher confessed to being a complete 3D sceptic (almost anti-3D) after watching 3D movies but after about 5 seconds (yes that quick) of playing Portal 2 he relented. That's all it took for him to realise gaming in 3D is TOTALLY different to watching a movie.

You dont have to accept how it is working, you can tweak it to your liking - with 3D vision you have two main settings depth and convergence (popout). Both can result in significant and subtle effects.

I have been gaming, multi formats since the ZX Spectrum in 1984 and going 3D has easily been the best thing that has happened to gaming - I sadly cannot play games in 2D now because they look rubbish and I can't get into them. :(

I think cinema is gimmicky. The screen is quite far from you meaning the depth effect is muted. When gaming you tend to get as close to the screen as you can resulting in depth being a key factor. The monitor is removed; you are in the world.

Unlocking more features e.g. more control would be nice

I have had my 3D Vision kit for over two years and I am still excited about it.

BUT

Not every game works well. Most games will require you to turn down a setting or two and you may need to get used to playing without a crosshair.

So many (easily a majority) are great though.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Whatever you do, be sure you get a samsung checkerboard mode capable 3DTV. CB is required for native resolution 3D gaming, and no other brands support CB. If you get a non-CB 3DTV, you'll be stuck with 3DTV Play and it's hideous image quality. PM me for a list of which samsung models support CB mode.

great answers. I was a little concern that it would feel gimmicky. I want to feel ok with spending so much money but getting a great experience out of it. Crosshair.. who needs that pffft.. :p

i guess i should have put some specs up huh. I dont have a samsung. I plan on getting the 24 inch asus monitor if i do get anything. currently running an i7 2.7ghz, with a Quaddro 3800. Yeah i need to update that quaddro before i get 3D if i do. Looking into a 570 nvidia.

Right, I should have qualified that to 'direct view' 3DTVs. Mits DLPs support CB also.

I think most anyone still here will tell you they are continually amazed by 3D gaming every time they pop in a new game that has great 3D support. But it sounds like most of your questions and concerns are focused on overall satisfaction and support of new games. To those concerns, I'd say support is far from perfect but overall its very good. You need to temper your expectations for sure when it comes to 3D Gaming support as we are still very low on the priority list for both game developers and Nvidia even though our out-of-pocket expenses often far outweigh the masses. Games sometimes get better 3D support after release, but I would never expect 3D Vision to be supported after the fact; best bet is to check before you buy, and don't buy until you're satisfied.

Still, I would go ahead and get an idea of what game support is like by polling 3D support for your favorite games you own, the big games that were released this year that are important to you, and future games that you are looking forward to. I would personally say 2011 was a big success for 3D Gaming although there were definitely some bumps in the road, but tons more hits over misses. Here's a bit of a recap of games that shipped this year and my subjective rating in 3D Vision:

Crysis 2 - Excellent (native implementation, took a few patches to get to this point, still requires some tweaking to taste).

Dragon Age 2 - Good (similar 3D quality to the 1st one, if you liked DA1 in 3D you'd like DA2 as well).

Witcher 2 - Amazing (a bit of a mess at launch, issues were not completely addressed until 2.0)

Dirt 3 - Amazing (took a few patches but by most accounts, best racing experience in 3D Vision).

Fable III - Excellent (had some issues at the start, but later patched by both MS and Nvidia for an excellent experience).

Battlefield 3 - Excellent (took over a month for 3D to be supported and a few additional patches for full controls. Performance is still a concern for some).

Batman Arkham City - Amazing (just top-notch 3D Vision support from Day 1, even better than Arkham Asylum)

Skyrim - Amazing (kind of by accident, the devs did nothing to make this game great in 3D, but an amazing experience nonetheless).

LA Noire - Amazing (similar to GTA4, even better with some convergence tweaks)

Assassin's Creed Revelations - Good (could've been amazing but this iteration introduced some more problematic shadowing issues that can't be turned off like the previous titles).

Star Wars The Old Republic - Good (kinda by accident, usual MMO problems with mouse cursor and nameplates in 2D, some minor effects at the wrong depth, but overall very good 3D Visuals).
Some under the radar, but amazing games in 3D:

Trine 2 - Amazing (quite possibly the best implementation and showcase of 3D Vision yet)

Alice Madness Returns - Amazing (has some minor issues, but some of the most jaw-dropping and disturbing 3D effects in any game)

Hard Reset - Excellent (the devs have continually been working to improve the game, by all accounts, excellent in 3D).
And the disappointments and misses of the year when it comes to 3D Vision support:

Dead Space 2 - Poor (similar to 1st title, just a lot of problems due to post-processing and deferred lighting).

Space Marine - Poor (odd post-processing halos, works better with DDD).

Deus Ex Human Revolution - Poor (supports 3D natively but its not actual 3D, its just a flat 2D image in stereo).

Rage - N/A (No OpenGL, no 3D Vision)
Looking back, I can honestly say 2011 was a great year for 3D gaming and gamers like us who took the plunge early. There were certainly some bumps in the road but right now I'm in that enviable position of having too many great games to choose from to play in 3D. Skyrim...BF3....AC:Brotherhood....Witcher 2...so many choices. This wasn't always the case but right now, anything that isn't great in 3D isn't even on my radar at this point.

Its fake 3D but the overall visuals and 3D effect are excellent with some tweaking beyond the in-game parameters (via INI). The biggest boon of Crytek's 3D approach is that you get all of Crysis 2's eye candy without the performance penalty, which really can't be overlooked given how poorly BF3 runs in 3D with similar eye-candy.

To OP: I am blown away every time I load up a game. It is especially noticable after you've gone a few days without gaming. As previously mentioned, there are always some speed bumps along the way - it was frustrating beyond belief to purchase The Witcher 2 on release day (which adverstised 3D support months before release), only to be forced to wait another three months before it was playable in 3D. But once problems like that are fixed (and sometimes they work great from the get-go) it is just phenomenal. 3D Vision is the most enjoyable and worthwhile purchase I have ever made in any category.

My suggestion to you is, besides getting 3D Vision, to invest some money in the rest of your system and get a truly powerful gaming machine. 3D Vision requires a lot of GPU power and having a nice system that you can be confident will play most anything on high settings is really nice peace of mind. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I have a fairly modest system (see specs) that will run most games above 30FPS probably 95% of the time. I often need to lower the odd settings but 3D games look so much better than 2D. Total War: Shogan 2 (which is sadly one of the few unplayable games) on max settings looks rubbish in 2D (seriously poor quality) compared to 3D Total War: Kingdoms which is its predecessor by 4 years! **edit** Shogan 2 actually feels like a budget game.

    3D blows away 2D.

True that. Shogun 2 stayed on my hard drive all of ten minutes when I realized I couldn't play it in 3D without throwing up. One of these days I'll go back to Kingdoms... It works great in 3D. Never tried Empire: TW - not my preferred time period.
