Oculus Rift First Impressions
  7 / 14
I would love to see the Hydra supported in more games, I have one but only use it for Portal 2, Mass Effect 3 multiplayer and Max Payne 3. I would use it for more games if you could actually remap the buttons easily without having to use their profile editor, which I find really awkward to try and use for some reason.

The profile editor is great, if a little fiddly.

how is it that 720p on rift is such an issue while hmz-t2 from sony that is also 720p device doesn't seem to be such a big deal, have you had any experience with hmz?

On the Rift it's stretched, via lenses, to wrap around more of your FOV, and compensated for in software so as not to look distorted. The problem is the lenses are enlarging the screen's pixels.

Also Rift developer kit is HALF the resolution of hmz-t1/2. Hmz's are [2] 720P 3d screens [tech 1080p but doesnt matter]. Oculus rift is practically 720P[1280x800] but is [1] 720p 3D screen and is much closer to your eyeball. rift dev kit = HSBS= Half side by side hmz-t1/2 = FSBS = Full side by side Basically a 720P HMZ-T1/2 = 1080P Rift imo [Not that I have a problem with that]. It needs double to go from hsbs ->fsbs difference. Then another third for FOV[Eyeball's closeness to screen/lense]. The pros is larger FOV with same image quality/AA but yea.. it needs to happen first. TBH, I dont think any non-vr fanatic is going to find the OR dev kit truly playable for a full game. Its like lieing to yourself. If OVR is about immersion looking at a very blurry image defeats the purpose.

Yep, that's why metrics like screen resolution are not good enough. Too much variation when they simply say 720p or 1080p. A more accurate metric would be arc-seconds per pixel. That takes into account what you can actually see. People on the thread I referenced are talking about Actual Perceived Detail which is similar. In any case, resolution by itself doesn't mean anything. You need to also include FOV.

Yea but I don't think 1080P will be less then 720P non-rift. I just think its alot closer then people would imagine. Though regardless it goes to show you that dev kit is pretty much unplayable imo. Since itss actually less then half of 720p. Has anyone seen the news about sixense? Wireless controller coming out. Combine that + hmz-t1/2 sounds amazing.

Pretty sure sixsense is just a wireless Hydra.

Yea but freedom of motion is pretty amazing with a HMD I'd imagine. It allows you to at least 180 degrees of motion. Not sure about past that since it may had trouble with that. Im sure if there isnt a gun peripheral someone will make it. Its pretty useful because the hydra is like the only consumer device with good tracking.

I reprocessed your Image with stereophotomaker to make it watchable.
Thanks, great suggestion. Not sure how I went all this time without knowing about StereoPhotoMaker. My other shots were too far off to share. Not surprisingly, taking photos through the lens is challenging to get useful stereo shots. But StereoPhotoMaker pushed them back to usable. Attached here are the other 4 shots I took. I think these are pretty representative of what you actually see.
In RIFT really such a disgusting image?? I looked at the screenshots at their HMZ ... I'm in despair! My RIFT will arrive in two days ...

It's a development kit, not a consumer product. They make that very clear on the order page. It doesn't sound like it's "bad" as such, but it's not yet as good as it should be for normal use.

Maybe, if you look through the RIFT - picture will not be so not legible through the enlarged image?

Well, for what it's worth, I found the DevKit Rift resolution to limit my ability to play properly. For example, trying to aim at something far away is nearly impossible because it's all pixelated. There were a couple of times I played games using Vireio, where I literally could not figure out what to do because I couldn't "see" well enough. I'm accustomed to the highest quality 3D Vision experience I can buy, so this is a particular problem for me. But, your mileage may vary. Please let us know your experience when you get your DevKit.

I've warned you a few times arni = / . I really dont think its going to be what you expect. Before opening it really consider if you would be happier selling it. There is no way you are playing mass effect on that thing. I doubt it will even happen well enough in consumer version, its really not meant for third person games let alone I really doubt that there will ever be a renderer that comes close to 3d vision [Which is not even enough for us.] Rift is really going to have an indie focus, at least for a very long time. Nothing wrong with that, I dont mind playing some VR games that I wouldnt be able to play on 3d vision let alone more immersive but I really think you are interested in it for games that arent going to happen. I doubt you will be able to play any game with more hud/text then half life. Its going to feel like 33-40% the resolution of an hmz-t1 due it being close to 50% res combined with massive FOV increase. I also get it on Tuesday.

When you view things in 3D you get a natural doubling of resolution because of the different eye angle, so those shots look a bit better in 3D. Still, I think those shots are pretty representative of what I actually see.
I also get it on Tuesday.
Sweet! I'm looking forward to your impressions.
