nVidia 3D vision help Anaglyph vs Active Shutter madness
Dear nvidians,

I am very new to nVidia's 3D Vision. I just got my Alienware M17x which comes with nVidia GTX 460M graphics and built in 3D LCD.

When I got this laptop, it came preinstalled with the 267.64 driver. The latest driver I could find is 280.26.

Here's the problem. When I ran the 3D setup on the default (267.64) driver, the sample pack images looked like they were stacked on each other when viewed without the glasses. When viewed with the glasses, the 3D effect works perfectly fine.

However, these are old drivers now and I tried to view YouTube 3D videos but they keep asking me to upgrade my drivers. So I installed the 280.26 drivers. However, using these drivers, the sample pack images have three colors instead (red, green and normal). And when these are viewed under the glasses, they don't render as 3D.

I'm very new to this guys. But I tried to do as much homework as possible before filing this request. I believe the nVidia 3D vision glasses are "active shutter" glasses and they use high frequency flickers to render the 3D image, while the red and green images are usually called anaglyphs and require red and green lens glasses to view them. This might possibly be just a setting in the nvidia Control Panel which I'm missing, but if there is anyone who can guide me to the right path, I will be very thankful.

Cheers,
Shahz

In the Nvidia contol panel under stereoscopic settings make sure "3D Vision 120Hz" is selected NOT "3D Vision Discover".

Mine had these two options:

Alienware 3D Vision notebook
3D Vision Discover

Tried both and doesnt seem to make any difference. Still get the anaglyph images instead.
Do you guys usually do a "clean install" or leave the checkbox unchecked when installing new drivers?

Also, did you install the 3D controller?

Yeah, you have to do the "Alienware 3D Vision notebook" option. Make sure you do not have any external monitors plugged in (this may mess up the detection). After enabling the "Alienware 3D Vision" mode click on the "Test Stereoscopy" button on the bottom. You should see two doubled image (not colored) and if you put on the 3D Vision glasses it will be 3D. If it doesn't work try disabling the "Stereoscopic 3D" then changing resolution and refresh rate in the Nvidia control panel. You should be running at the native resolution (1920x1080) and 120Hz refresh (if you don't do this it wont work). Then re-enable stereo 3d and try the test again. Hopefully it will work. If not I suggest reinstalling a slightly older driver and make sure to do the clean install.

Mate, I have a 3D laptop too and took me a while to figure this out.

You can only view stereoscopic 3D files on youtube 3D and not the RGB types so search for that type of files, also in youtube 3D settings you can set it to stereoscopic only. Plus you also need to use Mozilla Firefox as that's the only browser that supports youtube 3D so far.

Hope this helps!

Clean install is always better...

Have you tried Alienware 3dvision notebook setting ,,,?
Did you test it again with "test stereoscopic" (don't try it with games or youtube before you manage to get it working with the test botton...)
Don't forget to enable 3d again in the control panel..

Still nothing ,then please post all screenshots of the nvideo control panel settings..
Easy for us to see what's wrong this way...

Hey Ferry,
Thanks for your response. Here's some feedback.

Clean install is always better...
Gotcha..Tried a clean install this time..

Have you tried Alienware 3dvision notebook setting ,,,?
Yep, I have attached the screenshot here.

Did you test it again with "test stereoscopic" (don't try it with games or youtube before you manage to get it working with the test botton...)
Yep, and the test displays the "dual color" anaglyphs. However, since I remember the answers from the working drivers, I "falsified" my answers so I can enable the 3D stereoscopic settings.

Don't forget to enable 3d again in the control panel..
I believe I have enabled this. Attached screenshots along with resolution screenshot as well

Here's a screenshot of the 3D image. I couldn't took a screenshot, so I took it with a camera.

In your fourth picture you see the option .."only when 3d programs run"
See if there's an option like..turn on while in full screen or something like that (I don't remember correctly) and see what happens then...

Hey Ferry,

I tried all of the options but it remains the same. I wonder if I should use some .inf file from your sources to see if anything can be fixed? This is driving me nuts. The working driver is so old, almost all games are not running in 3D and the latest one is rendering in dual colors :(

I know..Thanks a lot for your help Ferry..I know you have been very patient too..I guess I can just hope that someone official from nVidia reads this or this issue gets escalated and given attention. I've read everywhere on google and apparently some people are even having problems "detecting hardware" while installing the driver. So I think I'm at least a bit in luck. Guess I have to wait for my 3D gaming experience until there is a solution.

*sigh* :(
