Thinking about joining in on the 3D fun.
  1 / 3
I do have some things I want to discuss. One of them is the scarcity and limited amount of these 3d vision 2 monitors. Where are all the new ones? Are there even any new 3d vision 2 monitors planned? Nvidia keeps us in the dark about this. So far, I've seen the Asus VG278H which is what I want to buy, a BenQ model and an Acer model. Is there any hope that future monitors could be in the 30 inch size? As far as the VG278H goes, I plan on plugging it into a verizon fios cable box. I'm also going to get a razer tiamat for surround gaming and movies, but can't find a home theater system to connect to the tiamat control box to switch audio between the two. I'm new here, but I don't see Nvidia actively involved, especially in this 3d vision forum or the 3d surround forum. I may be newly registered but have been following 3d vision this forum since before it got compromised. I haven't seen anything substantial as far as news goes from Nvidia regarding their 3d vision, at all. I am aware of the GK104 and I am unwilling to spend 500+ dollars on a what seems to be a massively overclocked, maybe even overvolted stock mid-range chip, but I do want 3d vision and the most I would get would be a 660Ti primarily for my budget and value for my money. My case will be the Corsair 550D for quiet operation and I'm going with an FX 8320. I know its probably a ways off, but I do want to speculate on 3D Vision 3. I feel like the glasses could be mildly improved if there is anything to fix as far as its design goes. Maybe the resolution for 3d will go up to the new 4k standard, and we'll see 3d vision in 4096x2160p at 120hz or more? 30 inch monitors? What do you think would be improved in the next revision of 3d vision?

I doubt there will be a new 3D Vision standard anytime soon, Nvidia has pretty much dropped it. Again the resolution wont be going up either because DVI is pretty much topped out bandwidth wise on 120Hz 1080p.

Ive not been keeping track of 3D Vision 2 certified screens since I got my Asus 27" VG278H last March. I'm massively impressed with it though. nVidia has left us in the dark here for most of the last year. Their support seems non-existant at the moment, but at least we have Helix and the others who are willing to fix some of the broken games. I would be surprised if there is ever a 3D Vision 3 standard, but if there is we had better see some support for existing customers first! A 660ti might push games for 3D Vision, but certainly not with any AA involved. I run a 580 and tend to get 40-60 FPS in 3D in most games, and mostly at max detail.

If you are going to hook it to Fios box for watching TV as well, and a home theater system, I'd strongly recommend you look at a projector. The one I run the Acer H5360 does full 3D vision, and for home theater there is nothing like a 12 foot diagonal screen. The only knock on it is that it is 1280x720 native resolution. I run it in 1440x900 for computer use, and it's acceptable. For TV, it's still HD, and you won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p at the 8 foot viewing distance.

I have the Asus VG278H and it's the best monitor I have ever used so for me it's the perfect screen, bright fast and with very good colours! To bad that nvidia dont give a crap about 3d anymore so my advise is not to buy it at present moment! Nvidia just sticks their filty heads in the sand and pretend it's raining so I say just give em the finger as they are all a buch of asholes these days! Hold on for the Oculus Rift mate!

I thought that's what I've been using on my DLP since I built my 3DPC, the better part of 2012.

A few threads like this have popped up recently, and there is a common (and valid) message from people who point out Nvidia's lack of support for 3d vision this past year, which tends to send a negative message to anyone looking to jump into the fray (indeed one reply above essentially advises you to *not* buy 3d vision). Maybe I am crazy, or blinkered, but I personally continue to recommend 3D Vision to everyone. 3D Vision is absolutely fantastic technology, it's available now and has real transformative value (for the gaming experience) right now for about a hundred or more games. It is true that many (most) AAA games have been failures in stereo 3d this past year (and a half), but the list of games I have in my Steam library that I have not even started, or the list of games on the helixmod.wiki site with Helix-ready fixes (many of last years AAA, essentially 3d vision ready) will keep me going for the next 3 years, no problem. This more than covers the investment I made in 3d vision 1 two years ago. If you *only* want to play *new* (2013 on wards) games in stereo 3d, it is true that there is some significant uncertainty ahead. But if you've not yet played Skyrim, or Borderlands 2, or Far Cry 3, or Dishonoured, or Mass Effect 3, or X3TC/AP, or Witcher 2, or Dead Space 1/2, or Metro 2033, or Just Cause 2, or Dirt3, or Batman AA/AC, or DOOM 3 BFG, or... the list goes on... then the $150 for a 3d vision kit will more than justify itself. Finally the monitor you ask about is an excellent buy regardless, even if you don't use 3d vision.

I must be missing something here, but the Occulus Rift itself will still require games developers to develop their games (or game engines) to support it (Wikipedia: "Games and game platforms must be specifically designed to work correctly with the Oculus Rift. Oculus is producing an SDK (software development kit) to assist developers with integrating the Oculus Rift with their games"), and since lack of developer support has been 3d Vision's real issue, the Occulus Rift is going to have the same issues I am sure. Also, a few years ago I owned an early technology VR headset (can't for the life of me remember the name of the company) which had head-tracking and so on. I used them for Doom 3 under WinXp back when Nvidia drivers supported OpenGL, as well as FEAR, Colin McRae and a few other things. Very importantly, as immersive as they were (and entirely ghost free of course) the issue I had with them is that you literally have them strapped to your face covering your eyes entirely so you can't see anything else - including your keyboard! - while you have them on. So games with lots of keyboard shortcuts were hard (if not impossible) to play - I replaced them for e-Dimensional glasses. So I don't think the choice between 3D Vision and a VR Headset is anything near as clear cut as people are saying.

Well, vr is one thing. I actually thought more about tridef and skipping nvidia entirely. In my experience nvidia have lately always blown their customers and butchered fine technology. Call me naiv if you like but i think (for a company like nvidia) it's their obligation to push technology further for the good of them and for the good of the customers. They just treat technology as well as their customers like inhabitants of a chickenfarm. So to clarify: The line in my last post is not really an advice. It's my personal opinion: "Do you want to be treated like a broiler?".

Likay, I have seen no indication that you have ever used 3D Vision. Nvidia's old 3D drivers are for this discussion not the same as 3D Vision. There are a huge number of differences. Talking to tridef support during trial and basically getting told that we don't support Geforce made me pretty mad at them. Back to Nvidia, I am really happy with 3D Vision and the later upgrade to 3D Vision 2 with ASUS VG278H. Some Games are really well supported and others as well with help from Helix and Co. Most games will never work with 3D Vision. (Anno 2070, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) At the end of the day it is up to the developers to get great 3D support. It's great watching my 1000+ 3D photographs I've taken and is my best solution for Blu-ray 3D. Finally if you are unable to play a game in 2D and taking advantage of 120hz isn't that a bit narrowminded. There are some great games you can play in 2D right now along with a great library of well supported 3D Games.

Same company isn't it? Same functions? Just a slight changed name and narrowed down versatility. Am i wrong? Second: Tridef works well with nvidiacards. I don't know where do you get other impressions? I'm running tridef with my nvidiacard without problems so if your card isn't running then the problem should be... ? Tridefs supported games looks better in visual appearance than nvidia but unfortunately often on cost of performance. It would be nice to have several solutions of which to choose the for the moment best experience from. As a user of nvidiastereo, iz3d and tridef i'd like to believe that i know what i'm talking about. Nonetheless: Rely on nvidia and they will burn you. You've just not been around that long yet.

Well, I'm with it for the long haul. My 3d vision is just something I must have for my gaming machines, even if the future looks a bit iffy. I just hit the buy button on a vg278he and vision kit 2. Puttin the vision kit 1 on the kids pc(dam them some spoiled kids!). There are only a handful of games I DON'T play in 3d. And I've got a 300+gb steam folder... :)
