We are pleased to release our DX11 fix for Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag!
We are releasing it as Beta instead of complete, because it's easily in a playable state, and we want to get feedback on how well it's working and if you see any problems.
Please give us feedback in this thread to let us know what you think, or detail problems you run into.
Have fun!

Installation
============
1) Make sure you have a platform patch installed.
This is an optional graphics patch from Microsoft. You need this update to avoid having 3Dmigoto crash.
You can look in your View Installed Updates, and search for KB2670838.
If you don't have it, you can get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36805
2) Run the game once to make sure it's installed, resolution and refresh are like you want.
Make sure 3D kicks in.
3) If you are running recent drivers, and Compatibility Mode is kicking in, do Ctrl-Alt-F11 to disable it.
We've tested it on older drivers like 320.49 and the most recent Beta 337.50, and think it should work in all cases.
We've tested it with SLI and single GPU.
4) Get the fix as a zip file from here: http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2014/05/assassins-creed-4-black-flag-directx-11.html
And unzip all of the files and ShaderFixes folder into the Assassin's Creed 4 exe folder.
e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag"
It's a lot of files, 420 shader files, and 16 dlls, an uninstall, and the .ini file.
If you need to uninstall, there is an uninstall.bat that will delete the dlls.
5) With all that installed, run AC4.
You should be able to see everything in 3D, and be able to change depth and convergence.
Performance should be good, very close to what you normally get with AC4 in 3D. You should see all of your CPU cores active.
First launch will be slow, like a minute, as it caches shaders.
Big, big thanks to Pirateguybrush and Airion for testing and reporting issues.
Game Settings
=============
1. Shadows: Shadows must be "very high" or lower, 'soft shadows' have not been fixed (not even looked at yet). For performance reasons turning off soft shadows is a must anyway (the shader is 10000 lines long, compared to most of the others which are all < 600, this explains the processing hog)
2. Ambient Occlusion: SSAO has not been fixed (or looked at) yet. Use "Off", or HBAO+. HBAO looks better anyway.
3. World Detail: Setting to low gives a good FPS boost, but removes gameplay elements, so really needs to be on medium/high
4. Motion Blur: Must be set to OFF
Known Issues
============
- Rain splashes on the ship are 2d
- Sun Rays: appear 2D, but I can't seem to do anything about this.
- Shadows from smoke are 2d (minor effect)
- Text on in-game screens is too deep. This can be adjusted as part of varying the overall HUD depth using new settings in the d3dx.ini file:
[Constants]
x=0.8 <-- Change this one e.g. 0.4 is less depth, -0.2 will pop out the screen etc
y=0.8
z=1.2
w=2.0
- Bloom from some Lights sometimes shines through objects. This might be an SLI issue, not sure
- Reflections were fixed in the Animus place, but the fix is only approximate, and there is some residual rendering error, but it's not bad. Reflections in 3D are messed up bad actually, and we will continue working on it.
- For some reason, when the game is started, you may need to change the depth setting a fraction (and then back to what ever it was) for the fix to kick in. ** The latest release requires that you not use AC4 profile so this problem does not exist anymore.
Disabled Stuff
==============
- Screen stuff like smudges and raindrops
- Decals like blood etc (for now)

I just let out an audible gasp when seeing this post, and now my wife thinks less of me. Doesn't matter though. You guys are awesome! Can't wait to fire this up tonight. Thanks so much for what you guys do.

Another incredible fix from Mike! This one was a LOT harder than AC3. It's absolutely amazing now.

Looks drop dead gorgeous. Performance is better than tridef too. At 1080p 120hz i was getting more frames compared to 1080p sbs with tridef.
- Rain splashes on the ship are 2d
Happens on land too, on some surfaces at least. I was roaming around havana when it started to rain. No big deal tho.
edit:
[quote="Arioch1"]I think it was mentioned the rain is 2D and might be unfixable.
[/quote]
Okay, its a known issue then. pic removed.
I think it was mentioned the rain is 2D and might be unfixable.
I got this working without any issues on Windows 8.1 - I just didn't copy over the dxgi.dll file. I am running this on a pair of 680GTX cards. I got performance in the mid 30's in Havana by dropping lowering a few settings outside of everything being at max. I don't use motion blue anyway so no loss there. My other lowered setting are TXAAx2, HBAO+ at low, Physx at normal.
The game looks gorgeous and this fix doesn't interfere with the SweetFX that is being injected by RadeonPro. Now I can finally play the game again.
Great job guys!
*Edit* I got a decent performance increase by setting making sure v-sync is off and game and forcing v-sync off via the driver using Nvidia Inspector. I do not notice any tearing after doing this. Now I can set TXAAx4 and HBAO+ to high again. I left physx at normal and now I get upper 30's minimum, mostly 40's, in Havana.
I attached a screenshot from Havana. **High Depth**

The fix is working great for me too. I'm playing it in 3D surround and its just as glorious as I'd hoped. And performance is no worse than when I used to run around with all the brokeness.
I can confirm the need to toggle the depth a notch to get the fix to kick in.
I also saw the star issue in Havana. Not a huge game-breaking issue, but just confirming I see it too. Reminds me of when the sky would get too close with the Skyrim Helix fix.
I have noticed one strange thing with HBAO+ enabled. It is barely visible in Arioch1's screen cap above, but it much more noticeable when standing in a shadow. There are lines that appear which criss-cross the screen to make lighter and darker squares and triangles. These lines completely disappear with AO off or regular HBAO. Not a huge deal, just something I found interesting. Here's a view of it...

But this is really exciting stuff. Thanks again.

Glad to hear it's even working in a couple of more extreme setups- 3D Surround, and on 8.1 with SweetFX. Thanks for letting us know.
Also, I'll share a trick I figured out awhile back for posting shots to the forum, in case you want to share some .jps. This makes it so you don't need an external link or storage elsewhere on the net.
1) Write your post like usual. Add Reply.
2) Click Attachment icon, the paperclip on your new post.
3) Choose a file (also works with multiple files selected.)
4) Click Open. Wait for awhile until it finishes scanning the pics.
5) Refresh page to see your attached files as green links.
6) Copy the link address of one of your files in Attachments section.
7) Edit your post with the pencil.
8) Click Image icon on right to add image tags.
9) Paste your link address inside the tags.
10) Click Save Changes.
Voila! Inline image display. It will automatically show side-by-side for JPS images.

I see what you are talking about with the HBAO+ issue. Setting it to (low) fixed the problem and provided a small FPS boost anyway. Thanks for noticing it.

Setting HBAO+ to low is visually identical to setting it to off. Just FYI.
Congratulations on the fix, guys! Out of curiosity, what's been changed (if anything) since I looked at it?
As for the remaining issues, any chance of decals being restored? They give a nice sense of physical interaction with the world. No problem if they're going to be a lot of trouble though, would just be nice.

What version of windows are you running? What driver? Do you get an error message? Does the game just not start? Does the screen go black?
It's very difficult to help someone if you don't say anything beyond "it doesn't work".
Mike_ar69 and bo3b, you guys are awesome! And thanks to Chiri as well for first developing 3DMigoto, giving it the perfect name, and making it open source. You're collectively kicking butt.
I think the option to adjust the HUD depth will be great to have. I think somewhere between screen depth and 0.8 will be just right for me. Is the wrapper still game specific or might this option be easily usable with AC3?

The code itself should work with the AC3 fix, and add that ability.
However, the shaders themselves would also need to be changed to use the new iniParams. If you or someone else has the motivation, you should be able to edit the shaders and get this to work.
[quote="Ve_Chuy"]I have windows 7 x64, driver 337.50, Gtx Evga 570 SLI, yes the game just not start, AC4BFSP.EXE has stopped working. Thanks for answer.[/quote]With that setup, I would expect it to work OK. Does the game run OK without the 3Dmigoto DLLs? Be certain to set the resolution and refresh rate to what you want BEFORE adding the 3Dmigoto fix.
Double check that you have the KB2670838 patch installed. Go to your Installed Updates and paste that KB2670838 string into the search box. 3Dmigoto will crash at launch without this.
If all that seems to be in order, we'll need a log file. Go to the d3dx.ini file next to the game, and change "calls=1" at the top. Run the game and it will generate logs. Send those to me at <3Dmigoto@bo3b.net>.

1) Make sure you have a platform patch installed.
This is an optional graphics patch from Microsoft. You need this update to avoid having 3Dmigoto crash.
You can look in your View Installed Updates, and search for KB2670838.
If you don't have it, you can get it here:

Performance should be good, very close to what you normally get with AC4 in 3D. You should see all of your CPU cores active.
First launch will be slow, like a minute, as it caches shaders.

*EDIT: Thanks for the tip on posting screenshots bo3b!

Congratulations on the fix, guys! Out of curiosity, what's been changed (if anything) since I looked at it?
As for the remaining issues, any chance of decals being restored? They give a nice sense of physical interaction with the world. No problem if they're going to be a lot of trouble though, would just be nice.
It's very difficult to help someone if you don't say anything beyond "it doesn't work".
I think the option to adjust the HUD depth will be great to have. I think somewhere between screen depth and 0.8 will be just right for me. Is the wrapper still game specific or might this option be easily usable with AC3?

However, the shaders themselves would also need to be changed to use the new iniParams. If you or someone else has the motivation, you should be able to edit the shaders and get this to work.
With that setup, I would expect it to work OK.
