Shared Steam Accounts for Shaderhackers
  1 / 8
One of the suggestions that came up in the Patreon thread was the idea of putting some of the donations towards games that could be shared between multiple shaderhackers, which can spread the benefits around a little to the other shaderhackers that are not themselves accepting donations. I've just bought a round of games from the current sale and since two of them were primarily for fixing we have added them to shared accounts. Currently we have: - Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (apparently the same DRM as TPP that causes issues for 3DMigoto that I'd like to investigate) - Tales of Zestiria (by request) We are using one account per game to reduce contention if multiple shaderhackers want to use the shared library at the same time, and pirateguybrush is managing access to them. There are trust issues with sharing accounts like this, so this will only be available to proven shaderhackers (retired shaderhackers welcome), but we have not yet decided exactly where to draw the line. If you have fixed at least a few games and would like access, send pirateguybrush or myself a private message with your gmail address and we will make a judgement call.

I don't think it will matter in this case, but I imagine that you are setting up these game accounts via gifted games so that there is not any payment info in the account. But just as an FYI, I'd thought I'd add that Steam enacted limited account privileges earlier this year on accounts that have not purchased $5. Gifted games do not count. From the Steam FAQ https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3330-IAGK-7663# What features are unavailable to me? Limited users are prevented from accessing several features on Steam, including but not limited to: ◾Sending friend invites ◾Opening group chat ◾Voting on Greenlight, Steam Reviews and Workshop items ◾Participating in the Steam Market ◾Posting frequently in the Steam Discussions ◾Gaining Steam Profile Levels (Locked to level 0) and Trading Cards ◾Submitting content on the Steam Workshop ◾Posting in an item's Steam Workshop Discussions ◾Accessing the Steam Web API ◾Using browser and mobile chat ◾Adding public artwork and screenshots The big one seems to be no friend invites. Without this feature, you could not easily be able to see if the account is logged into. Also Steam chat if you guys use it to communicate.

You're correct in that those limitations do apply, but friend requests can be received/accepted by these accounts, just not sent from them.

It does mean that we won't get the trading cards out of these accounts, but given that we used pirateguybrush's ability to purchase from the RU store for these that's not a big deal. Edit: Ninja'd

Just my idea on how multiple people can work with the account: - Obviously the first time you log you request a code sent to your e-mail (e-mail associated with the account). I think this e-mail should be shared as well so if we decide swapping PCs or whatnot we can still log in. - After a game is downloaded, each user can re-log into Steam in offline mode. This way let's say 4 people can use the same account in the same time;) Problem comes with some online games ofc... At least this is my idea on how we can tackle the multi-user problem;) Cheers!

If you have some trouble with this (we were having some issues earlier with one of them) let pirateguybrush or me know and we'll try to sort it out. We have the credentials to the emails on a second document, but that won't be shared as widely as it allows people to do things like change the passwords on the accounts which we don't want. One reason we might consider enabling Steam guard is to allow family sharing to be used so you can play the games from your main account, earn achievements, and still participate in Steam chat with all your friends, but that complicates matters and since it requires access to the email it kind of lowers the security instead of raising it. I could maybe set up something on one of my servers to forward steam guard codes but not password reset attempts to allow this, but that would take a bit of time to set up. Lol, as fast as you guys replied about limited accounts, I'm sure you know about family account limitations. ...Is there a limit to the number of devices or friends I can authorize to share my Library? Yes. You may authorize Family Library Sharing on up to 10 devices at a given time, and for up to 5 accounts that may then use your game library on any of your authorized computers. ...Do I need to be online to play a shared game? Yes. You must be online to access and play games which are shared with you. ...Can I share specific games, or do I have to share my whole library? Libraries are shared and borrowed in their entirety. ...Can all Steam games be shared with friends and family? No, due to technical limitations, some Steam games may be unavailable for sharing. For example, titles that require an additional third-party key, account, or subscription in order to play cannot be shared between accounts. There's some more that can be found at http://store.steampowered.com/promotion/familysharing

Yep, family sharing might be an option down the track, if we can find a way to enable Steam Guard without giving full access to the email address on the account. The 5 user limitation might be a bit of a bother, but we can just boot people off the family sharing list once they're no longer working on/playing that particular game. I'd also like to reiterate that these shared accounts are open to any shaderhackers who simply want to play the games being shared, as a way to say thanks. The list of games is likely to grow over time as well. If anyone feels like donating a game to the shared shaderhackers pool, please contact me to arrange it. As I can buy things from the Russian store, it will usually be significantly cheaper than the listed price. Please note though, if you decide to do this there is no guarantee that donated games will be fixed.

So, somehow Steam Guard got enabled on the MGSGZ account and while I was logged in I enabled family sharing, disabled steam guard then logged back in to my main account... and it seems that family sharing was still working o_O Could have been a fluke, but maybe this will give us an option to use family sharing without having to give everyone access to the email - coordinate with me or pirateguybrush while we are online to get the steam guard code to enable it just long enough to authorize your computer then disable it again, and if we are offline or don't respond just play on the secondary account (in offline mode if possible). If you try to log into an account and find that Steam Guard has been enabled again let us know - I'm not sure how it got turned on this time (maybe when I verified the email address? Dunno. Edit: Couldn't have been that - I logged in earlier today with steamcmd to download the game to one of my servers[1] and it was not enabled then) [1]: and this is why I'm using a remote server to download the game: http://blog.darkstarsword.net/2016/01/dealing-with-ultra-high-packet-loss.html

Thanks to a very generous donation from a forum member who wishes to remain anonymous, we now have a decent budget with which to buy shared games. Given I'm buying at Russian prices, it should stretch to cover quite a few full price AAA titles, a large number of smaller indie titles, or some combination of the two. Please feel free to make requests, as I'd like the shaderhackers to be the people deciding what to get with this. I'm going to suggest Rise of the Tomb Raider as one to consider first off. Also a reminder to shaderhackers, please PM myself or DarkStarSword with your gmail address to be granted access to the shared accounts. Off the top of my head, shoutouts to DHR, Mike, Flugan, eqzitara, Necropants, zayou - get in touch! :)

Sounds good, I would be willing to gift a cheap game or two to this account to help people fix games.

Just a heads up, I'm away on holiday for April with limited internet access. I'll try to respond to things, but it'll be slow. Before I leave, are there any games shaderhackers want for the shared accounts? We have a decent amount to spend thanks to several generous donations. I'd suggest Dark Souls 3 as an option - helifax has already indicated he might be interested, and I think I saw a couple others express interest too. It's on the expensive side though - perhaps it's best to wait for the initial performance reviews (so we can be somewhat confident it'll run in 3D), and then pick it up?
