About to smash this 3D Vision kit into a billion pieces.......
  1 / 2
CANNOT get this kit to work to save my life... I've been at this now for 4 hours. I have the 3D Vision 2 kit. -Acer GD235HZ Bid 23.6IN 3D Ready 120HZ. -GTX 680. When I plug in the emitter it blinks red and doesn't stop. Windows tries to install the driver but it fails. Comes up as "Unknown Device" in the device manager. In the Stereoscopic Set up wizard it says "Connect your emitter" but it's already plugged in and blinking red. Clean installed 335.23 drivers. Didn't work. Uninstalled everything Nvidia, manually. Also used driver fusion to get the rest. Than did a clean install of 335.23 again. Didn't work. Updated my motherboard bios. Didn't work. Tried every single USB slot on my PC, USB 2.0 and 3.0. Didn't work. Also note I had this working perfect first when I bought it. What on earth is going on?

Blinking red on the emitter is bad, I'm not sure, but I think that's an actual hardware failure. I've had an emitter come up solid red after boot, which is sort of similar, and usually happens after the computer sleeps then wakes. There were reports of this being fixed by driver install. Try doing clean install of 320.49 drivers, as being known good drivers. Latest ones have been sketchy, but not with respect to the emitter. Try also swapping the USB cable. If it were damaged or somehow off, that could give this symptom. Use the shortest known good cable you've got. Try plugging the emitter into a different computer and see if it comes up green there. Let Windows find the driver instead of an NVidia install. If it blinks red there, that would suggest hardware failure. Contact NVidia support for what blinking red means exactly.

What operating system are you running - Are you plugged into a USB 3.0 port and if so are proper drivers installed for that port - Have you tried different USB 2.0 ports - Have you tried a different cable to/from the emitter (could be cable failure) - Have you tried plugging the emitter/glasses into a different computer (even if not 3D vision ready at least it will let you troubleshoot the driver issue)

OK, this is good progress. You proved by connecting to the laptop, that the emitter is working fine. We also see from the NVidia FAQ that blinking red means the driver is not installed. (The cable is just a normal USB cable, nothing special. But the laptop test proved it is fine.) So that narrows down the problem dramatically to just getting a proper driver install. Did you do the steps on that page I linked?

Have you tried manually installing the driver from device manager and selecting the folder with the 3D Vision drivers? I believe I had the red light problem before. Same exact scenario... that worked for me.

Okay guys after doing everything possible to my PC I finally figured out it's the USB cable or the port in the emitter. When I plug in the cable to the emitter it flashes red, but if I push really hard on it, it turns green. So I held it in there with pressure long enough for windows to install the driver and it worked. But the second I take pressure off it it turns back to solid red. Really weird.... So anyway, I ordered a new cable. See what happens.

If its not cable. Don't push too hard, figure something out with tape or a damn good glue. I've broken 2 emitters over the years [seriously a small fall will break them. They have 4 extremely delicate solder points. Unfortunately I lack soldering skill.

Sounds like a broken solder joint, easily remedied with bit of flux and a small soldering iron. If you can find out which one it is put a little flux on it, dab a very little solder on the tip of the iron to clean/prep the tip, and apply it to the solder next to the pin until it melts onto the pin and you're done.

Could be a bad solder connection, but why did it work on laptop?

Okay, I have to remove the top of the emitter right? What's the best way to do that without breaking it?

Screws are underneath the rubber feet. Pry off the rubber feet, and it's clear.
