My ignored bug report was here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/540743757838330060/ Didn't post any details, because it seemed like such a simple bug- don't ignore the overlay setting. I'll try to narrow down the exact DLL I saw before. Something like steamoverlay.dll, but can't recall.

When I logged in yesterday to try Mass Effect, Steam updated and required a restart. So it is very likely the issue. Once I applied the compatibility and administrator fix for Mass Effect, it worked fine. This was/is with the shader overrides installed. I never tried it without them. I would give The Witcher a try, but the fix is removed from the Helix Mod site and the link in the other thread is for an empty zip file.

I just checked, and the zip file has contents for me. https://s3.amazonaws.com/eqznew/witcher/shaderoverride.zip Apparently it's just to push the hud into depth, but it's still an indication that this issue affects more than one game.

Assuming that Steam is the problem, then any game that required you to disable the Steam overlay for Helix compatibility will now be broken, because it's no longer possible to completely disable the overlay. It's a strange world where Origin works better than Steam. I'm very disappointed that Valve has the gone the route of "don't care". Edit: the only thing that is weird is that FEAR2, my original test case, is still working OK. I can't explain that, so I might be overreacting.

I installed the shader override on The Witcher: Enhanced Edition launched thru Steam with and without the overlay enabled, no trouble/problems whatsoever. Are you using SweetFx on The Witcher also?

OK, just wanted to be sure, so I did a back-to-back test. 1) Current non-Beta 7/2/14 client. Run ME1 with Helix- CRASH. 2) Delete all Steam files- restore to 5/29/14 client from System Restore. 3) Run ME1 with Helix- Runs, active, fixes dynamic shadows. 4) Allow update of Steam, restart to 7/2/14 client. 5) Run ME1 with Helix- CRASH. It's definitely the latest Steam client. 6) Set all exe to Admin and WinXP SP3 compatibility. 7) Run ME1 with Helix- Runs, active, fixes dynamic shadows. Running ProcessMonitor, I can see that GameOverlayRenderer.dll is being loaded with the new 7/2 client, and that it is specifically not loaded with the 5/29 client. The new client does not respect disabling the setting of "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game". But, if I add the compatibility and admin mode, the overlay is launched, but exits immediately. Edit: Actually you only need Administrator mode. I disabled the compatibility for WinXP, and left Administrator, and it still works with 7/2 client. I overreacted, it's not as big a deal as I thought. :->

Hm, I had no luck with admin or compatibility modes. I thought I applied it to every Mass Effect file, but could you please confirm which ones you've done it to? And are you running Steam as admin too?

Didn't run Steam itself as admin. But, 4 files D-Man11 specified. Mass Effect\Launcher.exe Mass Effect\MassEffectLauncher.exe Mass Effect\Binaries\MassEffect.exe Mass Effect\Binaries\MassEffectConfig.exe I can only run it from Steam itself, launching the apps directly gives a steam error. When I launch from the Play button, I do then get the admin dialog from UAC. This might be a difference between 7 and 8. Might be worth disabling UAC altogether and run as administrator as an experiment, if that's still possible.

I've got UAC disabled already, and definitely tried with those four files. I'll test again tonight, but I'm not optimistic.

It used to be that Steam games had full launcher applications within their files. Most of them are borked now and require the Steam Launcher due to integration. So they are incomplete and not a standalone exe anymore. It may be against TOS, but you can get around it by going to somewhere like GameCopyWorld and downloading a full launcher file that's non reliant on the Steam Launcher. There's an "AD" for download software, just click skip in the upper right corner to move on to the mirror. I used to use it when TriDef had problems launching from the Steam files or recognizing games that I had installed.

I'd rather not download cracked versions if I don't have to. Oh, and I'm not using SweetFX on The Witcher (yet). That's just what I'd like to do once I have the wrapper working. Just tried running The Witcher as admin with overlay disabled, it crashed. Maybe there's something else happening on Windows 8? Game runs fine without fix.

It's just the executable file. It's not a pirated game.

Yeah, but it's a cracked exe file. Biggest problem with it is that it's hard to find one that's completely up to date, and they can cause other problems.

BTW, the HelixMod page for The Witcher is here (gamelist links to dead page at moment): http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2014/05/witcher.html I'm also seeing the crash at launch when Helix is installed for The Witcher. It runs fine without the HelixMod. If I revert to 5/27 version of Steam, it no longer crashes at launch (but does crash at exit).
