I have an 7950gt agp setup which works very well for 3d
but I am going to upgrade to pci and will probably get an
7950 pci system mainly for 3d gaming I am not familiar with
the motherboards and cpus available and would like to know
if the motherboard has an affect on the 3d or can I just buy
the best I can afford.
well it depends, you want a mobo thats ddr2,and either socket775 or am2,these are crucial to an upgrade right now but if you must use ddr1 tiger direct has a ecs board for only 35 bucks and is sli ready meaning 2 pci-express video cards runnin at the same time

a good mobo right now should meet this standard, and you can get these mobo's about 60bucks or so but they should have
Socket,-am2 for an amd cpu,or 775 for an intel
Dimm rails,-it should have 4 slots supporting up to 4gb of ddr2 pc5400
2 pci-e slot, just in case you wanna run sli or crossfire conifg,
should support Serial ata ports but it dont have to ifyou only have 1 ide port you can run ur hdd as a master and your cd/rom as a slave on the same ide ribbon
*do not buy a board with onboard grafx,
and you will probably get a better deal if you buy a bundle pack with a matched cpu and motherboard, this will ensure compatability

do research on mobo'sget a tiger direct mag and a pad of paper and try to build pc's in ur mind and right down the parts, price, performance, and calculate the best bang for your buck, then see about buildin a cheapy combined with the parts yopu already have, but one things for sure,it seems sometime the more powerful u go the cheaper its gets, not always, but take this for example
1024mb of ddr1 ram at 333mhz is like 60bucks
you can get 2048mb of ddr2 800mhz for 50
or 1024mb ddr2 667mhz for $29.95
and thats a great deal, but yea do some pretend/practice builds usin bare essentials and see what you come up with you may be suprised,
1 more tip if ur gonna buy soon wait till day after christmas then order from tigerdirect.com and you will probably save a wheelbarrow full of cash lol
