3D Vision and 3 or 4 way SLI GTX 680s Any Changes?
  1 / 2
I was having a look at the chart posted telling about compatability for 3D Vision and various graphics cards. From the looks of the chart, it appears as though Nvidia is suggesting, and I am probably wrong, that it's possible to utilze 3 and 4 way SLI running 3D Vision with GTX 680s. Is that the case? Or is your chart just poorly put together? I know that 3D Vision only utilizes 2 GPUs and adding a 3rd or 4th GPU would simply default to PhysX when 3D was enabled. So I'm wondering if with the GTX 680s has that been changed? Any new information will be greatly appreciated.

i have seen 3d screenshots that showed flawless scaling with 3-way sli in just cause 2 (1080p, 8x sgssaa), but no improvement in witcher 2 (1080p, ubersampling).

just cause 2 is a physx game isnt it? I'd like to see results from non physx games for a more definitive answer.

Are you sure its only 3D enabled that limits 3-way sLi ?

4-way SLI isn't supported by NVIDIA officially but it should work with 4-way SLI as well.

I didnt know that 3D Vision dosent use the 3d card for SLI improvment and only uses it for Physics...the page you linked dosent say anything about it, only that 3-way SLI is supported. Where did you read that?

Its been that way for years. When I had 3 way GTX 280s thats how it was. 3rd GPU was worthless once I enabled 3D. I beleive even the default to physx for the 3rd gpu was added later. However, hardly anything supported more than 2 way sli at the time anyway except crysis and a few other games. No way I was playing Crysis in 3d with that system. That rig was pretty much built to max out Crysis, DX10, 16xCSAA but at 60 fps. The hope of running Cysis maxed at 120 fps was ludicrous at the time.

I don't know. I've sent and received email from their customer support asking if they intended to support 3 way sli for 3d and their reply was something like the current support is satisfactory. 3D surround is still fairly new. It may now be necessary for them to add addiional sli support to 3d vision for promotional purposes in regards to 3d surround. With AMD finally jumping onboard with 3D support Nvidia may fianlly be getting off their butts and taking notice. It seems like common sense to me. 3 and 4 way sli support for 3d = more sales. Of course its a minority of customers, but it would all be mid to high end cards. I can remember last year sometime Nvidia drivers for 3D surround were totally jacked except for 270.61. Thats how bad it was, I remember the driver version that worked a year later. I ran it for like 4-6 months. It was, new driver release. Oh its still messed up, revert back and hope it still works.

Exactly. You say they think is satisfatory as it is but to me it dosent make any sense since, with 3-way sli support in 3d vision surround, it would be possible to play with better framerate for people who dont have 580´s and only have 470´s ou 560´s, dont you agree?

@danevito: Do you confirm that the 3rd card dosent do anything when you play in 3d vision surround (in games that dont have Nvidia Physics tech)?
I would very much like to know your benchs scores, if you did any. :) Thanks

I can't quote it, but it's been said many times on here that in 3 or 4-way SLI you don't get any real benefit for 3d vision. I'm fairly sure even Andrew F has said it on here.
However, I think I've read that you do get a benefit if you're using 3d vision surround.

That is in 3D Vision mode? If so, probably it just helps with the physx, like they said. Do you have any other benchs from a game that dosent use nvidia psysx? By the way, what graphic cards did you use?

EDIT: I read some of your other posts and it seems you confirmed that the witcher 2 (game without nvidia physx) gains performance with a 3rd card. So they were actually wrong. 3-way sli does work properly in 3d vision. Thanks for that

Now a bit off topic: Do you think a motherboard without 3-way sli support in the manual but with a 3rd pci-e slot (x4 pci-e 2.0) can work in 3-way sli, somehow? Does the x4 speed makes it a bit worthless? I have the Asus P8Z68-V Pro
