Buying 3D TV Play
  1 / 2
I bought a Panasonic TX-L37DT30B TV this week to use with my GTX580 equipped PC. I have installed the 3D TV Play Trial software and when run there is a "Buy 3D TV Play Online" which just goes to http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/3dtv-play-uk.html, damned if I can see anywhere to buy the software, am I missing something?. Do I really have to buy the full 3D Vision 2 kit even though I don't need it and I'm unlikely to use it for the foreseeable future?

Regards

Craig

That specific model # is not currently listed as supported on the 3D Vision requirement list, so it may or may not work. http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dtv-play-system-requirements.html

If it does not work, you'll need to add it by following the instructions at http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2774

The trial is free for a few weeks or a month, I forget. 3DTV Play is available to purchase currently for $39.99 and is a standalone product. http://store.nvidia.com/DRHM/store?Action=DisplayCategoryProductListPage&SiteID=nvidia&Locale=en_US&Env=BASE&categoryID=57244400

Nvidia 3DTV Play is limited to 5 reinstalls and activations, so hope that you never have to uninstall a buggy driver or you'll burn up an activation. http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2892

You might want to try the TriDef 3D trial as well.

Let me get this right. I pay 40 bux for something that should be free anyway. And when I am forced into paying 40 bux I can only activate it 5 times before I need to fork out the same amount of money again ? are nvidia having a laugh ?

This does not sound right. You should have as many reinstals as needed. Are you saying that everytime a new driver is released that an activation is needed? Im not saying your wrong, im only asking because im interested in this topic and looking for farther clarification on this subject. . Could you post a link or screen shots of the process

Thanks

Here's the link again http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2892

It's from the 3DTV Play FAQ, believe it or not, it is what it is.

No I'm not saying everytime a driver is released. But if you have used Nvidia for any length of time, you'd know that sometimes a clean driver install is not always successfull and requires uninstalling everything and even using Drive sweeper. Could this potentially cause a problem with the 3DTV Play activation and cause you to use a reactivation? I'm unsure, but as buggy as things get, I wouldn't discount the possibility.

It's the same with all software activations. They're limited, because if they wouldn't be, one just could distribute his key around to everyone.

If you really have used up the limited number of activations, you just contact nVidia and ask for more (with proof of your purchase). Just like with Windows and many other software products.

And - please correct me if I'm wrong - I'd assume that an activation is only necessary once on a Windows installation. Reinstalling the driver, even a clean reinstall, shouldn't require a new activation. A complete reinstall of Windows itself, however, certainly WILL need another activation.

Same is true for almost all software activations these days.

I buy win 7, I can install it as many times as I like. I buy office 10, I can install it as many times as I like.
I buy 3dtv play, I can install it 5 times. lol.

For anyone looking to pay $40 every 5 activations, dont bother. Get yourself the 3d vision emitter, keep it plugged in (even if you wont be using it) and use the software for free. The only cost then is the emitter, but at least we dont have to buy a new one of those after every few installs.

it sux hardcore.. limited installation sux so bad. i bought crysis 2 from newegg and EA put limited installation too. I was happen to testing couple of ssd on my desktop and laptop and now my copy of crysis 2 is useless. paid $50 for it and now i can't use it for crap. if 3dtv is anything like that, i will be very mad and probably not pay for it at all. if something you pay for has limitation like that, i wouldn't pay for a cent and go for pirated version and pay them to crack it for me. 5 time limitation sounds just bs. i've had enough crap of this with crysis 2 so i won't pay for anything if 3dtv play is like that.

This isn't entirely true. Even with MS products like Windows and Office, after a number of hardware activations with the same key they no longer automatically validate your installation. You have to call a 1-800 number and put in the activation code a machine reads to you, takes about 3 minutes, but it will validate after that. I had this happen with both Vista and one of my Win7 keys.

This software and many others that use similar forms of DRM just require you to contact an actual person to reset your key. I'm sure Nvidia would reset your activation key if necessary if it came down to it.

Just contact EA and have your code reset. I did the same at least once for either Crysis 1 or Warhead, I can't remember, and have also had to do it for a few other titles like Riddick and Farcry 2. In all cases, the keys were either reset instantly or within 24 hours (via email inquiry), and overall the process was entirely hassle-free other than the time it took to make the initial contact. Also, in the future with SecuROM games, you can de-authorize a machine if you do any kind of testing like that where you know you'll be doing multiple installs on different machines or configurations.

But yeah physical DRM can be a hassle if you hit the install limits, which is why more publishers are going to strictly digital forms linked to a user-account, similar to Steam. This gives you the option to link your games to an online account like Steam or Origin and you will always have access to the content with virtually unlimited installs. Some games still have some type of limited installation but it'll be a LOT easier for you to get your key reset hassle-free in those cases.

Same here. nVidia just doesn't have the extremely expensive infrastructure that MS can offer (with fully automated calllines etc.).

I really hate your language.

If you're a legitimate owner of Crysis 2 and have used up all your activations, what keeps you from contacting their customer support to get another 5 activations?

That's fine saying that, but there's nothing official from nVidia stating it.

They would be in legal trouble if they didn't offer that. It's also common sense. And there is no reason to deny it (other than the person maybe not knowing how to reset the activation counter).
