3D TV Play >Optoma 3D-XL >projector? Will this work?
I am considering buying the Optoma TW610ST projector (1280x800, 3100 lumens, 3000:1 contrast). It is a 3D-Ready projector, but it is not one of the projectors listed as supported by NVidia 3D Vision, although there are 7 other Optoma's supported. I read somewhere that I could get NVidia 3D Vision to work with this projector if I spoof the Acer H5360 INF file. I'd rather not have to do this work-around to get funtionality. So here's what I am thinking:

Optoma just released their 3D-XL converter box that converts 3D from a 1.4a signal to the frame sequential 3D format of their 120hz 3D-Ready DLP projectors. I plan on buying this anyway so I could use it with blu ray 3D, PS3 3D, and DirecTV 3D broadcasts.

If I use NVidia's 3D TV Play software, could I then just send the signal to the Optoma 3D-XL converter box, which would in turn convert it to frame sequential for the projector? In theory this should work right? 3D TV Play will see the Optoma 3D-XL as a 1.4a hdmi device, just like other components do. The 3D synch will just be coming via DLP Link from the projector instead of the IR most 3D TVs use with their glasses. That shouldn't make a difference though since it is the display that does the synching and not the software nor the converter box.

I know I will have to use DLP Link glasses instead of NVidia's 3D Vision glasses, but that's fine with me. I just want functionality. I'd rather not buy the Optoma GT720 projector (which is directly supported by 3D Vision), since it is only 2500 lumens. I need all the lumens I can get since I have a 120" screen. You lose about 60-70% of your brightness as soon as you put on 3D glasses.

Save yourself a lot of headaches and buy a compatible projector in the first place. Is there a reason why you wouldn't?

I see a logic where it could work, but when it comes to Nvidia (or any company pretty much) if its not written in stone its not guaranteed to work.

I'm somewhat curious if this works myself so do let us know if you decide to try it out.

cyberheater - The Optoma TW610ST produces 3100 lumens. Other models like the Optoma GT720 produce 2500 lumens. The transmittance of the 3D shutter glasses are between 30-40%, which means 60-70% of the light is lost. I already have a 1080p projector and a 120" screen. The 120", 16:9 screen is about 43 square feet.

The GT720 produces 2500 lumens at it's brightest. Using the Projector Calculator Pro, http://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm , we see that I can get about 26 foot lumens in best mode and 53 foot lumens in bright mode at that screen size. So if I can get 26 lumens in best picture mode in 2D, you have to figure about 1/3rd of that when you use the 3D glasses. That brings it down to less than 9 foot lumens. The SMPTE standard or movie theaters is 12+ foot lumens. This means I'd get a rather dull image. If I go with the Optoma TW610ST, I can get 33 foot lumns in best picture mode. 1/3rd of that is 11 foot lumens, a brighter picture. I have also read conflicting reviews about the GT720, some say the picture is good, others say the color balance is terrible for movies.

There are also RealD CrystalEyes 5 rechargeable DLP Link shutter glasses. They are expensive, but they apparently have the best contrast, best response time, and good transmittance - 40%. If I use those, I could be closer to 14 foot lumens in 3D.

I'd take those marketing specs numbers for lumens with a large pinch of salt. I've got a Acer H5360 which is meant to output 2500 lumens on high output with a fresh bulb. I'd say in reality on Eco mode you're getting around 1500 with accurate colour. The lumens drops by half in 3d mode. Most dlp 3d 720p projectors do that, they don't advertise the fact. And then you loose half again for the glasses and suddenly you're down to 300 - 400 lumens. In a light controlled room it still looks fantastic.

If your looking to buy a optoma 3d projector or the 3dxl like me but have been waiting for Optoma to get their ass in gear . Go to consignia.ca I am going to get the VIP 3d converter $100s less than the optoma and out in 2 weeks mid April.with 1pair glasses . I read the reviews from Projector central ...very good.
