I tried epsxe, and your right there isn't z buffer capability in the original PSX hardware let alone any emulator. PS2 does have one so it should work in theory, and it does in practice!.
@jpkrautw : You can find all the info on the dolphin emulator forums. Wad files are simply packaged files that are an emulator+rom combined. The emulator supports the Wii Virtual Console, so to play Zelda all I used was a wad of Zelda(N64 emu+original ROM) in Dolphin. Works fine, although there is very limited capability with most N64 games.

Ah, ok. Yeah - I've been playing zelda in 3D using Dolphin since they fixed wad support. I thought you were playing other n64 games than virtual console ones.

Guys I get this same "cannot initialize dx8" error as well. Any clue about getting around this? I'm using the 266.35 drivers.
Also, the pcsx2 emulator 0.9.7 beta with the gpsx plugin that it comes with does not kick on the USB emmitter for 3D . Any clues there as well? Alt+Enter to fullscreen doesn't seem to kick it on either.
