Asus VG236H and Acer GD245HQ
Hi,

About to take the plunge to 3d and really could do with some advice.

Does anyone know if these monitors can run at lower than native resolutions at 120Hz?

Reason being that if my pc struggles to render in 3d at 1920x1080 then I'd rather play in 3d at a lower resolution. I know the scaling will affect the image but I'd prefer running say 1680x1050 @ 120Hz than watch a slideshow.

The Asus is available in the UK for £400 and the Acer is available for £375, both bundled with the 3D vision kit. Anyone have any opinions on which would make the better buy?
The Asus has a glossy screen and I think it has component video in (in addition to HDMI and DVI), whereas the Acer has VGA (+DVI/HDMI) and possibly thinner bezels..

Thanks in advance!

acer surely can. I've got it and I can confirm that.

Hi Rusty,

I've got a GTX480 and it rules!!! I recommend that dude!

For the monitor I would only go with a Dell, they rock!

Yes... that is very helpful... GTX480, for which maybe he ain't got enough $$$$ to dish out, and Dell monitor as it 'rocks'... yet there is no 120Hz monitor from Dell.

As far as using lower res, it should work on both of those monitors, but using all but native res severely degrades quality of picture.
1920x1080 vs 1680x1050 is some 15% difference in pixel count, so it is not much difference in FPS, unless you severely lack RAM on GFX card.

Good point about only a 15% difference.

There still doesn't seem to be much solid detail on comparisons between the Acer and the Asus.
I think I'm going to go with the Acer as I think the gloss screen on the Asus would put me off, plus everyone says the Acer is great.

Well, tbh... I'm glad I waited a bit as Asus seems like winner for me, unless there are some serious issues with it.
Unlike many people I actually prefer glossy screens! :)

the acer is not great.
the oversharpening it does by default and which cant be turned off without messing with service menu setting that will later mess up 3d and your brightness is VERY ANNOYING.
while the asus has sharpness AND overdrive amount in the OSD itself, user adjustable

Yep, and that's why Asus seems like very winner... still waiting for few more reviews tho!
