Why are many 'professional' gaming reviewers anti S3D?
1 / 3
I always read with interest articles on 3D gaming. The last one I read was the PC Gamer's April edition.
You can ask my wife that even before opening the mag I predicted the article would end up writing unfavourably with regard to 3D. I was right. What was particulaly frustrating was after reading the article I came to the conclusion that it was an example of net researched writing rather than empirically researched writing. This was because of a comment on Battlefield: Bad Company’s single crosshair. They clearly play a different B:BA2 to me, the crosshair I see is dynamic and 3D! And then there’s the rather ‘obvious’ choice of games – the usual bunch of publicised but old games - L4D, R.U.S.E., Burnout Paradise… If the article is well over half a year old, that might explain things, but honestly, both outcomes are shoddy for a 'bleeding edge' magazine like PC Gamer!
Of the few friends I have, most are cooler than me and all of them are happy to knock me off my pedestal by telling me I am wrong about one thing or other. However, every one of them was blown away by gaming in 3D. All of them. Even playing games where I have had to disable the crosshair or change settings in the graphics option to remedy 3D issues.
What is up with the 'so called' professional community? They see the same thing I do - right? Where's the love?

Fear to the unknown?
To me it has always felt like they think they are going to be forced to use 3d glasses to game not matter they like it or not. So they want 3D back to the silent minority it used to be.

I tell everyone interested in 3DVS to run away as fast as possible. Nvidia simply doesn't take this technology seriously and there are just too many driver and performance issues with it that they won't fix. Hell, I have had to find half their problems for THEM, document them and find workarounds for THEM. That is simply no way to treat a customer. If I were working at one of the magazines then I would have given nvidia and their 3D a scathing review. Wayyy too much money for little to ZERO support from nvidia. That is the simple truth.

Errr, that's a simple falsehood. We just got a big driver update fixing more games. 3D videos are popping up on web pages. Andrew is spending a lot of time around here now. No support??

Because until someone invents the holodeck from Star Trek, 3D is a gimmick...
...And it's ridiculously expensive
...And you're a slave to drivers

Slave to drivers?? Huh? You mean getting profiles for games in your drivers? I suppose to some extent, assuming you buy games the instant they come out. And the game needs a profile. And the game's developers don't work with NVIDIA to make sure a profile is ready before the game gets out the door.
I haven't had any problems with performance. Some games don't work well in 3D but that's because the sky is rendered wrong or some such.
Maintenance? Errr? You mean plugging the glasses in every couple of weeks? Oh the pain... I may not survive it.

3D cuts your performance in half and requires SLi in most cases, so unless you have the best rig money can buy, why would a standard gamer with a single 460 ever want it? 3D is not going to succeed on the backs of enthusiasts alone. In order for any manufacture to adopt 3D fully, they need volume sales. No one is going to order 3D panels or Nvidia 3D kits to sell if no one can afford it, or until the casual gamer can play CoD on his GTX 460 at 60 FPS.

You can see from my sig that I have a modest rig. I refuse to play games below 30 fps, I like to average around 40. I rarely play at max settings, though they are nearly there. For some reason I find jaggies far less noticable in 3D so lowering FSAA returns a good 20+% FPS which helps. And, keeping things in perspective, even if I lower my specs so a game runs at a consistant 60 FPS, the game still looks so much better (even with 3D off) than it does on my mates PS3! Much, MUCH better!

Running 3D & Surround together requires a massively powerful gaming computer. Most reviewers don't like the upkeep of ultra-high end hardware anymore, and run a single card/quad core i7 setup for most reviews. 3D Surround, on most games, requires 2 or 3-Way SLi and some serious CPU OCing to run well. Not to mention, 3D Surround is a niche market, reviewers catering to them would be a mistake, as that would exclude everyone that wants to see how the game performs on a single monitor in 2D (AKA people like me, that have no interest in 3D or Surround).
From the title, I assume that's what your original question was about.

I tell everyone interested in 3DVS to run away as fast as possible. Nvidia simply doesn't take this technology seriously and there are just too many driver and performance issues with it that they won't fix. Hell, I have had to find half their problems for THEM, document them and find workarounds for THEM. That is simply no way to treat a customer. If I were working at one of the magazines then I would have given nvidia and their 3D a scathing review. Wayyy too much money for little to ZERO support from nvidia. That is the simple truth.
