Most people are saying that the screen door effect is gone now, check https://twitter.com/virtualdutchmen/status/513386665394462720 , and lots of improvements. I'm glad Nvidia is supporting Oculus with 3d vision, this sure looks promising!
All hail 3d modders DHR, MasterOtaku, Losti, Necropants, Helifax, bo3b, mike_ar69, Flugan, DarkStarSword, 4everAwake, 3d4dd and so many more helping to keep the 3d dream alive, find their 3d fixes at http://helixmod.blogspot.com/ Also check my site for spanish VR and mobile gaming news: www.gamermovil.com
Supper excited. But definitely not coming before Q4. Carmack spent 30 minutes talking about how he was trying to convince Samsung to make easy changes to allow him to do interlaced screens (so they can get above the 75hz limit they were able to hack into DK2). And how he's going to have to finish a hackable prototype to try and get them on board. As of today, they don't have a supplier who can make them 90hz OLED displays.
The screens used in the prototype are the great mystery. Clearly, whatever they are, they're prototypes in the most literal sense.

Not to be too cranky, but I'm only going to accept opinions about quality from people who have actually tried 3D Vision on a good setup.
The trouble with Rift is we are getting all these people who have never before seen 3D at all, and so it's all magical and terrific, just like we were when we first got our setups.
Now we've gravitated to 3D Vision because even today it's still the highest quality 3D experience you can get.
Without the perspective from having tried the best there currently is, I just have a hard time listening to people hype Rift some more.
If you run across someone who has used 3D Vision, like Bloody, they are worth listening to.

I am really happy to see them taking 3D audio seriously though, that's been mostly busted since the Creative debacle with Vista.

Yeah 3d audio is si important and not for what I know is good enough yet.
I have used all kinds of different headphones as real 5.1 and Dolby DTS etc!
Dolby have a new tech called Headphone X that seems pretty nice. Well we surely could need something really new so lest hope this can be it, so I cant wait for it.
Right now I use a cheap Creative virtual 3d sound card. Recon 3D and it's pretty good for what it is.

Still no denying 3D Vision has the best quality 3D on offer currently overall, however some experiences on the Rift take everything else a step further, and in some cases I'm willing to trade some 3D depth to achieve head tracking and immersion I can still never get from my 3D monitor or projector.
If you try out Elite Dangerous on the DK2 the 3D really impressive. Maybe a lot of that is due to the cockpit and the scale you get when docking with stations, rather than what you can see out of the canopy when you are flying through space. Add in a good HOTAS and pedals setup and you really sink into the experience of flying a spaceship and you kinda forget about the resolution and technical issues.
If you try out Borderlands 2 using VorpX the 3D is underwhelming at best - however being able to look around with your head instead of your mouse feels way more natural and you still get the sense of scale even with lower depth 3D, purely because the image is all you can see, unlike a 3D monitor where 3D alone is the only way to achieve a real sense of scale.
I rarely look at a game and think "that tower looks HUGE!" I just see a tower. Playing HL2 EP1, on the Rift and looking up at the tower at the start of the game, I think "Holy shit that tower is freaking massive!!".
At this stage I can really envisage leaving 3D Vision behind if support drops away and the Oculus hardware really takes off. I don't want to, but I can see Oculus bringing better gaming experiences in the future even if the 3D isn't as good and the number of natively supported titles are fewer.
As for the 3D stuff on the rift wowing a new audience, maybe this will encourage more devs to think about 3D Vision as well. Not everyone wants a Rift but if they see good 3D coming to the PC via the Rift maybe they will see 3D Vision as the next best thing. It certainly can't hurt.

@FoulPlay99: Pretty much agree on all points. I think that sims of any form are going to be the killer app for Rift. Still cannot see stuff like Dead Space 3 being superior than a sweet projector setup, but maybe.
When I played DS3 on the projector, and got down inside the machine in Tau Volantis and looked up at the alien 'statues' I did think "holy shit those things are big." When a necro would jump me, life-size, in pop-out in the room, I'd always flinch.
Having played WatchDogs a lot on monitor, I think I can agree that monitor has quite a lot less presence and the tradeoff for headtracking might be good enough.
I still can't see playing something like Defense Grid or StarCraft strapped in. Maybe, but 5 hours of goggles on the head is not going to as comfortable. Seems like there are going to be some things that are killer on either setup. Neither one seems like death to the other.
It seems pretty clear that the crescent-bay is a CV1 prototype. Hope those reports of screen door and resolution are accurate.

I love my DK2 but I agree that games like Dead Space, third person games, strategy games are not that interesting in VR. The trade of having a headset attached to my head is harder to justify in those cases compared to being in my couch with 3d glasses and a 100'' screen. Still, first person games are far better in VR.
I actually tried Dead Space 1 with Vorpx on the DK2 and even though the games is supported in real 3d, it's incredibly broken in terms of lights and shadows, still it was quite immersive, but it's not better than 3d vision. However once we have very high resolution screens for OR, I can see the experience being at least on par with 3d vision (with the game properly fixed of course).
The worst part of DK2 gaming with a 3d injector is that anything under 60-75 fps is hardly playable, and with my 7970 I can get almost nothing to work at those fps. Even though Vorpx works well in many cases, 3d vision seems a lot less demanding to me.

Yes, playing the dead space games with the helix fixes on a projector was one of the best 3d experiences I've seen and there's a different sort of coolness to having life sized objects coming right out of the wall in your room with you but anyone with a dk2 and vorpx go check out F.E.A.R 2 to see what the combination of almost flawless 3d including dynamic shadows and lighting (turn off motion blur) plus great sound fx can do for immersion. Dead Space made me jump many a time but F.E.A.R 2 gave me a genuine chill down my spine like no movie or game ever has with all the hallucinations and especially when you have just the flashlight for light. Just something about not being able to see the real world at all makes it 10x scarier. Not for the feint of heart though!
The comments about the prototype sound very promising anyway.

Its getting more and more depressing to me personally the more they realize they need more resolution. It just seems like its “ten years too early.” At the resolutions 1440P@75hz or even 4k…. graphics will need to be so simplistic in order to get performance to drive the devices.
I once said maybe 1-2 years ago. I am excited about it but I don’t want to take two steps back to take one step forward…. its like ten steps back now.

You guys who have DK2 and are using VorpX, if you get a chance, you should try a HelixMod with VorpX. I don't think I've heard of anyone trying that.
DS1 for example is flawless with HelixMod. Stuff like aiming override would not work on AMD cards because of no nvapi, but the basic wrapping is done at DX9 level, which is the same for both NVidia and AMD. Not sure, HelixMod might require nvapi.
Lots of moving parts, but this might work, and would give you a far better experience in Rift.
(I'll get my DK2 in a week or so, but don't presently have any plans to buy VorpX since it seems to be superceded by VR Direct.)

Won't work. Its all tied to 3d vision. Same example with tridef. It literally takes your 3d vision values. Depth / convergence. If 3d vision isnt enabled. It ant there and it cant take it from vorpx.
Could do some stuff without nvapi but thats it.
I tested with tridef long time ago for kicks.

OK, good to know.
If there is a DX11 game with 3Dmigoto that might be interesting, I think that 3Dmigoto will work in this scenario. It does use nvapi, but only optionally, I've run it with no nvapi override dll, and I think it will work.

I have my DK2 and Vorpx ready to go for anything you want to try, I may check Dead Space Helix fix just to see what happens, though after reading eqzitara it doesn't look too good.
I will check for 3DMigoto supported games I own and try any fixes to see what happens. It would be amazing if those fixes worked on VR.

Ok, so I tried Dead Space 2 with the helix fix + vorpx and it worked fine as far as running (fov is very limiting though on DK2 for 3rd person view, maybe there's a hack out there for that) but the odd thing is it's not broken on vorpx without the fix? In fact many problematic 3d vision games work perfectly in vorpx without any special profiles. I just double checked these in 3d vision: Dirt 3 (broken lighting, try any night race), fear 2 (rated fair, lots of fog halos etc..), Chivalry Medieval Warfare (more lighting, fog issues), COD MW3 (crosshair at screen depth, lighting problems) yet all of those are practically perfect 3d in vorpx so I wonder if there is something flawed with nvidia's method of handling certain effects in 3d to begin with? Maybe someone who knows more about rendering pipelines can shed some light on why that would be that the same game engine can be rendered perfectly in 3d without any game specific fixes by one and not the other? Vorpx does take much more of a performance hit and runs at around 1/4 of the normal 2d fps vs around 1/2 for 3d vision but what good is 2x the fps if effects are broken all over the place?

However once we have very high resolution screens for OR, I can see the experience being at least on par with 3d vision (with the game properly fixed of course).
The worst part of DK2 gaming with a 3d injector is that anything under 60-75 fps is hardly playable, and with my 7970 I can get almost nothing to work at those fps. Even though Vorpx works well in many cases, 3d vision seems a lot less demanding to me.

The comments about the prototype sound very promising anyway.

I once said maybe 1-2 years ago. I am excited about it but I don’t want to take two steps back to take one step forward…. its like ten steps back now.

If there is a DX11 game with 3Dmigoto that might be interesting, I think that 3Dmigoto will work in this scenario. It does use nvapi, but only optionally, I've run it with no nvapi override dll, and I think it will work.

I will check for 3DMigoto supported games I own and try any fixes to see what happens. It would be amazing if those fixes worked on VR.
