Borderlands is now perfect in 3d 3d crosshair included
2 / 4
I've tried playing this in 3D and it gives me horrible headaches, which I presume is down to the very low FOV (even in 2D the default FOV feels horrible). You can fix the FOV easy enough but it makes the shadows go wrong at the left/right edge of the screen. Big shame, because the 3D itself looks great.
Every other game in 3D - no headaches at all, it's only Borderlands. I should mention I'm on a 4:3 CRT btw, I would guess the FOV issue isn't there or is reduced on a widescreen LCD.

I picked up Borderlands a few weeks ago in the Steam sale and just got around to playing it and its fantastic in 3D Vision, however, I get a strange bug where the FPS will drop down to a crawl, like 12-20FPS and both GPU's utilization drops down from 50-70% to 10-20%. I've already tried changing the NVCP setting for Borderlands to "Prefer Maximum Performance", but alt-tabbing and then tabbing back in resets the FPS. The FPS drop also seems to coincide with opening any of the Menu screens. Seems like another memory leak bug similar to the Splinter Cell Conviction problem with SLI and 3D Vision. Anyone else seeing a similar problem with Borderlands?

Hey, the lowest I saw was 22 fps ;) (2x 9800gtx), its around 45-60 however with 2x MSAA.
And once its crawling 3d vision makes no difference , its 22fps in 2d and 22fps in 3d. So its something else.
We should make the HUD stuff disappear somehow.
Overall this game is a hog, but very fun.

Well apparently this memory leak bug isn't limited to Nvidia or 3D Vision, impacts ATI users too so I'm guessing its an application issue. From what I've gathered from the Gearbox forums the problem was probably introduced with one of the DLCs or recent patches. I'm surprised more people haven't complained about it since Borderlands had a huge 70% off sale or something a few weeks ago on Steam. Shame really, this game is a lot of fun and looks flawless in 3D.....until FPS drops from 60 capped to 12-20.

Found the fix to my problem, it wasn't a memory leak in Borderlands.exe, the problem was actually caused by FRAPs of all things. Simply closing FRAPs out completely fixed the problem for me. ... finally a game sets the scope of whats possible with unreal 3.5 engine when it comes to s3d , I like it . Cutscenes are awesome, HUD and floating text should be removed tho. (anyone want to google this stuff up?) .
Future is bright we either get homebrew s3d powered by cryengine3 , or unreal3.5 ;).

But the iron sight can be a bit tricky if your depth is over 50%
Iron sight works perfect in this game even at 100%, you just have to pull Convergence back (Ctrl-F5) from the default to line everything back up. I don't play at 100% though, I still keep it ~50% because its much easier to focus back and forth between the overlays and item icons this way without going googley-eyed. There are a few other problems though like some water reflections/effects are only rendered in one eye. Also whatever post-process or frame buffer effect they use for reflections when you look out a window/glass results in a messed up double image. Otherwise its pretty much perfect, I'd say a 95/100 in terms of overall compatibility and effect. Menus and overlays are 2D but that's 99.9% of all games anyways so I don't take points off for that.
Here's some pics at 100% Convergence, never miss a shot with iron sights if you line em up correctly:

Yep that's how I play but at 50% depth so that its easy to focus on 2D icons if I need to quicker. Idk may be something wrong with your PJ set-up and aspect ratio because that looks perfect on my 1080p LCD from about 2 feet away. Everything is in focus to me and there's no perceived separation at all even when I focus on various parts of the scene or the gun, maybe I'm just fully accustomed to 3D Vision now idk lol.
As for FPS its 60 in that scene, GPU utilization ~60% probably most of the time. Borderlands only drops below 60FPS per eye a few times when driving around with a pair of GTX 480s in SLI. Forcing AA kills performance however, so no AA for this game.

Its ok with PJ' as well, BUT, this separation is HUGE. This is the so called toyification. I want to mimic human vision so I dont apply much. Your setting is like having a 2meter wide virtual head with eyes 2meter apart ?

Ya your screenshots are just low depth/high convergence settings, its what I do in games that have 2D cursor/crosshair/icon problems or silhouette/shadow issues with too much separation. But Borderlands has none of these problems if you increase depth. Again, may just be your set-up or just you're accustomed to low depth settings because the images I posted with 100% depth look fine lol. I don't play at 100% normally however, I play at 50%, just showing there aren't any problems with the iron sights and ADS with 100% depth and that they line up perfectly.
