3DTV Play on secondary monitor How?
  1 / 2
I have a usual computer monitor and Samsung 3DTV, wich is attached as a secondary monitor. Now I managed to turn on 3D output to TV, only when I make it as a primary monitor. But, I think, its a nonsens! How should I make a normal work in such configuration? So, I have to switch TV to primary monitor, every time when I whant to watch a 3D film or game, and then switch it back! May be it is possible to fix this problem somhow?

I`m curious about this too as I will be using the exact same setup when my hardware arrives.

It's not an Nvidia issue.
Games usually only enumerate the primary display and device.
Some games do allow you to play on a secondary display device, but they are few and far between.

Games maybe, but stereo video players can play on any chosen monitor. But now, I am also can use them only on primary... It is not good...

You're not really running 3DTV Play on a Samsung 3D Ready HDTV, are you???

Since 2 weeks I'm also running 3DTV play on a Samsung 3D TV (LE40C750) and I'm quite happy with it.
Indeed you have to set the TV as your primary monitor but you can clone the image to your normal computer monitor. Even in case I don't have the TV switched-on the LCD monitor gives a normal desktop picture. So you don't have to change it all the time.
Open NVidia Controlpanel (right click on desktop) and select: setup multiple displays. In part 1 of this screen select both your monitor and TV to use. Then right click on the number 2 screen icon under part 2 of the window and select duplicate displays (use your TV as primary clone. And your done. 3D picture on the TV, normal picture on the monitor. You can directly compare 3D with non-3D with this setup.

All Samsung 3DTVs have native 1920x1080 resolution capability in 3D. But Nvidia crippled 3DTV Play so that it puts out only ugly scaled 720P in 3D. Result is bad quality image. If a person is stuck with some other brand (Sony, Panasonic, Vizio) the 3DTV will be forced to do 720P anyway so it doesn't matter that Nvidia ruined 3DTV Play. For those people, they will have bad image quality regardless. This is why people who want to 3D game always choose Samsung so that they will benefit from 3D driver other than 3DTV Play.
to get good image quality, you have three choices..
1. 3D Vision
2. Tridef-3D
3. iZ3D

These drivers support checkerboard native res 1920x1080, so they take advantage of superior checkerboard capability of Samsung.

I'm quite new to 3D gaming and only started to play now for a couple of weeks with it.
Looking on this forum you seem to have investigated this quite well. I agree with you that 720P is not ideal and NVIDIA should give their users the option to run in the best possible resolution. Especially if you have the best possible graphical card(s) you want to use them at the max.
If I run my games in non 3D mode there is indeed a huge difference in quality between the 2 resolutions. However I found 720P in 3D surprisingly good looking on my 40" 3D TV. To be honest I tried TRIDEF in checkerboard mode and full HD resolution and I don't noticed a big quality improvement with my setup. Maybe on larger TV's the difference is bigger. I can't judge that. And I also noticed that some games run with 3DTVplay at full HD resolution (limited to 24hz). For slow games (RPG's, I have not tried FPS) I found it very well playable without any stuttering or flickering. Anyway fortunately it's a free market and your free to choose the driver you like. At least 3DTV play is somewhat cheaper :)

My wife swears she can't tell the difference between Blu Ray vs 640x480 standard definition. As an experiment, I changed the desktop resolution on her 22" monitor from native 1920x1080 to 1280x720, and she never noticed the change until I pointed it out to her. Go figure.

Sure, on a small screen the scaling errors of trying to fit a 720P image on a 1080P screen are diminished.

iZ3D and 3DTV Play are the same price, $40.00. That was the reason for my post, I wanted the OP to realize that he need not be stuck with bad quality 720P. If you have a Samsung TV, good quality and bad quality are the same price, so why would anyone choose bad quality?

Yes, it is possible, but TV and monitor have slightly different resolutions, and picture on monitor would have a poor, interpolated quality. So it is not a good way.

3DTV Play supports either 1080p@24Hz or 720p@60Hz. It is not an Nvidia feature, it is a limitation of HDMI 1.4 bandwidth. So nobody can do better. Checkboard mode has realy 540p resolution on each eye.

PS: I wander, if Nvidia support guys visit this forum? Or all this talkings doesn't make a sense?...

HDMI1.4 does not exclude 1920x1080P checkerboard, "better" is being done right now.

Checkerboard is really 1920x1080 per frame which is full native resolution, 1-to-1 pixel mapping. That's why CB looks so much better than scaled (interpolated) 720P, and it runs at the same framerate.

After reading your reply I decided to test 720P/60 hz and 1080P/24 hz in the game I have played most in 3D so far: Dragon Age Origins which is according to many people one of the best games in 3D for 3DVision/3DTV play. I can indeed see a quality improvement in this game when switching to higher resolution. The (only) 24Hz refreshrate doesn't seem to be a problem. However I noticed that my TV switched to black and came back a few times during my 6 hrs gameplay session. I have used Refresh lock utility to force my games to the 1080P/24hz resolution (this was a tip from somebody on this forum because some games don't have this resolution/refresh rate combo in game settings).
I'm just curious why you consider 1080P/24 hz even worse than 720P? Are you having issues with it with your setup?

1920x1080, regardless of mode, is native 1-to-1 resolution. the very definition of "native resolution" is "not interpolated". Checkerboard 1920x1080 mode is not interpolated, that's why it looks so much better than scaled/interpolated 720P.

1080P/24 is fine as long as the scene is static. But as soon as you pan/scroll, move around, scene updates come only 24 times per second which causes an extreme amount of judder. Also, a great amount of mouse lag is introduced. These two effects make the gaming experience unpleasant. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take ugly graphics.

No issues other than the issues inherent in 3DTV Play. If I play under iZ3D, I get both native resolution and fast response, and for the same price as 3DTV Play.
