The 980 to 1080 price jump is ridiculous. Inflation or not, it's 50% higher.
Is the reason why nvidia won't take the resolution limit off 3DTV Play because their quadro cards have to be used to get 4K resolutions with their 3D vision pro?
I.e they dont want to let gamers have a higher resolution in 3D as it'll prevent them from charging museums and the likes a premium for the 'feature'

If I inflation adjust the GTX 280 in Pounds, using bankofengland, it's £541.
http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/education/Pages/resources/inflationtools/calculator/default.aspx
Spot checking the others, they mostly come out to £540 give or take. Pretty sure that is all done in pounds, not converted to dollars, because the pound took a bit of slip recently.
If anything the GTX 980 was an lower cost anomaly at £430.
Then there is this 1080 for £535, right now.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/GIGABYTE-NVIDIA-GeForce-1080-GAMING/dp/B01GCAW1IA/ref=sr_1_1
If you are going to cherry-pick data just to prove a point, we cannot learn anything new. Am I missing something?

I'm not cherry picking data. These prices were the MRSP not some deal yonks after the card came out.
What about the founders edition eh? That's not a money grab?
Can only order the Titan x from nvidia themselves. Hmmmm.
What about my theory on 3DTV Play? Radio silence on that one? :D
Maybe we should all buy quadro cards. Would that let us game in 4K 3D? Or even 1080 at a playable refresh rate ?
My point is that they have gone up a lot in price these last few generations.. That's not including the genius way of inflating prices by bringing out a Titan, then a ti as a way to push up prices.
This is how it really is.....
Titan X = 1080
1080ti = 1070
1080 = 1060
They are making people pay 1080 prices for 1060 performance! It's a brilliant way to fool the customer.
That compared to the way the last 10 years of graphics cards have gone. The only exceptions are the 8800 ultra and the old 6800 ultra before that.
I'm glad we're going to get some proper competition from team red. Hopefully it'll making nvidia have to half their Titan prices overnight and force them to put HBM memory on their next cards rather than this gddr6 I'm hearing about.

GibsonRed, your posts are always hyperbole mate. I never know whether to take you seriously, or whether you are having a laugh at our expense :)
In case you are serious,
"They are making people pay" Are they holding a gun t your head?
I'll break it down for you:
They are a company. The primary aim of any company is to make money for the shareholders.
The shareholders elect board members, who appoint leaders within the company.
By law, the primary aim and duty of the board members is to:
1. Generate wealth for shareholders
2. There isn't 2.
3. Look at number 1.
The best way to generate wealth is for the strategy team to see how much money they can possibly make by selling at max money vs least cost to the company. They gauge what people are willing to pay and that's the set price. The prices are extremely carefully calculated, as well as the hype generated by the marketing team.
It is illegal to not be this way. This is called Capitalism.
They are not your friends. All any company sees is the potential money they can get from you. All forms of "we care about the community" is all marketing BS. Remember when Athlon 64's were better than Intel's offerings? Remember what AMD did? Yep, they made the CPU prices skyrocket because they could as people were willing to buy at those prices.
They don't owe anyone anything, and we are not entitled to anything. If you don't like the company, then don't buy their products. No-one is forcing you to.
I agree that the prices are high, but there is nothing that we can do about it. It is not unfair. The company is functioning within a capitalist democracy exactly as it should.
How old are you btw?

Since you didn't respond to any of my actual facts, I get it. You are just here to complain, not learn anything new. Fine. I'm done here.
For others who are actually interested in the genuine question as to whether NVidia card prices are skyrocketing or not, I provide you with the following data:
Card UK-msrp? US-msrp USInflationAdjusted
GTX 8800 (2006) £475 $650 $778
GTX 9800* (2008) £210 $300 $336
GTX 280 (2008) £450 $650 $728
GTX 480 (2010) £450 $500 $553
GTX 580 (2010) £399 $500 $553
GTX 680 (2012) £430 $500 $525
GTX 780 (2013) £549 $650 $673
GTX 980 (2014) £430 $550 $560
GTX 1080 (2016) £650 $600 $600
*GTX 9800 was not a high end card. UK-msrp? prices are suspect because I did not provide them.
You should be able to draw your own conclusions from the table.

This is false. It's a common rumor/meme fostered on the internet. At least in the US, there is no such law to maximize corporate wealth.
http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/04/16/what-are-corporations-obligations-to-shareholders/corporations-dont-have-to-maximize-profits
The shareholder price at all costs is a side-effect of tying executive compensation to share prices. It's executive compensation that is the problem.

Insults? When and where?
I think you might be being a bit paranoid mate.
I ask because I know about most people on this forum from a thread I made a long while ago. We all shared where we were from and how old we were, and something else about ourselves, as much as we felt comfortable.
You are fairly recent arrival here though. I am genuinely curious as you seem to be a passionate guy, from the way you champion VR etc.
My old thread is here btw...

Apologies if it sounded like I was dishing out insults :)
Just one thing though: "I know they've gone up in price because I've been buying them for decades. ".
We don't disagree. They have been going up. What bo3b is saying is that although that might be so, the value is still about the same due to inflation.
We agree with most of what you are saying. The only difference is that you think it is some sort of conspiracy by an evil corporation to extort money from everyone, whereas the truth is that this is just how business is done in a free market. The company is simply trying to strategically maximise profits by cutting features and inflating prices where they can. This is perfectly normal, although none of us like it as consumers.
If you really want to be pissed off at a company, check out some other companies which will shock you:

Also the whole Nike and child labour controversy, as well as indentured service in places such as Pakistan.
Not to mention the many deaths and disappearances of protesters caused by western oil and logging companies in south america.
The list is almost endless.

ragedemon. You come off patronising and condescending.
Asking how old I am, then asking if I'm from South America?!?
You're passive aggressive comments don't go unnoticed.
It's not my fault I base my arguments on how much the gfx cards actually cost and bo3b based his argument on what they should have cost.
Graphics have gone up a lot here. That's all my point was. Which they have. Fact.
Nvidia are getting greedy with these titanX/TI's and founder editions. This is my opinion but it's also a fact.
I really don't know what your twos problem is.

GibsonRed, are you from Canada? I think I may recall you mentioning that before in another thread. If so, then you and I are in the same boat, and unfortunately there is another factor at play here: the value of CAD vs USD. I also recall back when the high end cards used to be around $400-600, and now they are breaking the $900-1000 mark, but back then our dollar was much closer to the USD (and for a little while, higher), and now it's 2/3 the value, hence the hike in price. Unfortunately that's not only affecting graphics cards, but everything! Even a f***ing chocolate bar cost me $2 the other day, which is twice as much as I paid when I was a kid. As such, US citizens like bo3b don't see the same fluctuations as us because the USD is the standard world currency and that they are "only" affected by inflation.

I'm from the UK. You can work out costs due to inflation or brexit but it still is massive increase in price even within everything factored in.
Anyway. I think you are right. I don't think the Americans proces might have changed that much compared to other areas of the world.

Prices are worse in Europe too since the Euro crashed. And prices in Europe don't take average salary into account (people would abuse it if it worked like that, anyway) except for one or two countries that are even more expensive. Portugal and Germany have to pay the same even if people from Germany earn a lot more money.
I stopped complaining about all that a while ago, because we can't do anything about it.

Yes NVIDIA is getting greedy. That is hard to say is it due to a pressure from shareholders or not.
I personally think they Are currently the source off all evil and in carnation of the whole ideology
Behind current generation. Everybody wants everything without doing nothing.
But like ragedemon said its the name of the game. As a company its hard to grow without investors.
I as a one man company and artist have strougled with the balance to get profit. On the other Hand
You need to get as much as you can as there soon can be a time perioud you Are out of Work and
Need to survive to the next Job. Even better expression is the best Price for you is the maximum
Price the Customer is willing to buy.
And the Prices would drop if we stopped bying, but we ain't. So its no point in moaning about
High Price, and the fact is normal consumer does not need the power we here on 3D heaven
Need, the average joe 970 is more than enough for them.
Offcourse i would love to see more bang for the buck,
But i ques this what we get for being the minority.

GibsonRed, relax mate. I think you might be seeing a little too red. Sorry if I indeed come off as a rage demon :)
I asked if you are from the south of USA, not south america, which is a different continent. Except it's not. The MSRP in the UK for the 1080 is £529.

Since you didn't respond to any of my actual facts, I get it. You are just here to complain, not learn anything new. Fine. I'm done here.
For others who are actually interested in the genuine question as to whether NVidia card prices are skyrocketing or not, I provide you with the following data:

Nestle literally and knowingly responsible for millions of baby deaths in the persuit of profits:

Also the whole Nike and child labour controversy, as well as indentured service in places such as Pakistan.
Not to mention the many deaths and disappearances of protesters caused by western oil and logging companies in south america.
The list is almost endless.

It's just that your passionate rants, although sometimes awe inspiring, remind me of an acquaintance who has now passed - he was in his late 60s and was from the south. I don't know how that might upset you. I'm ethnic myself actually, from the UK, and in my 30s.
Although caution is always good, there is no need to be too shy about privacy. We are all friends here! :)
