My old bedroom 2d vizio blew up last night. Can anyone tell me the best tv in the 45-50 inch range for 3d pc gaming? Passive or active is fine. I'd prefer good smart tv options, and If something exists with pc hookups obviously that would be great. But 3d is the priority. Advice is appreciated!
Edit: forgot to mention, though it's probably self-evident, obviously latency in 3d mode is SUPER important. Already been burned by this with both LG and Vizio passive bigscreens.

I'd go with a TV that supports checkerboard like Samsung, DLP TVs and i think at least some LGs. You can get a used Samsung from a 2011, which has a low level of crosstalk (and the same as 2012/13) for pretty cheap.

My 51" Samsung is a 2012 model with active 3D. For the life of me I can never remember the exact model number. Anyway, it has a lot of Smart features that I never use. I've gamed on it a few times with 3D TV Play, but the controller lag is noticeable. It's just not as fun as sitting two feet away from my ASUS 27". I usually just use it for watching 3D movies.

The 2013 with far and away the lowest lag are the Sony models. If I were buying a set right now, it'd be the 802A. It starts at 47 inches. Not sure if 1099 is out of your price range though.

It kind of needs a EDID hack to get full 3D resolution at 60fps, but it can be done:

How far will you sit from the TV when gaming? I sit less than a meter away from my 46" for the added FOV, sacrificing some fineness of picture. I'll push it back or even pull it forward to 2ft sometimes, depending on the type of game and scenery. As far as lag, i get used to it if its under 40ms, but changing amounts of lag when switching between different displays can make the higher lag much more "present" in my mind, in my experience, which is not good.

Paul, do you have experience with these Sony's, or are you just going off the reviews and charts? Unfortunately, what I've found is that when reviewers are measuring input lag, they are _not_ reviewing the lag in 3d mode, but 2d mode. Both the previously mentioned LG and Vizio (one is mine, one my dad's) had great latency in 2d mode (with gaming mode on), but terrible latency in 3d mode. 3d mode also removes the "gaming mode" option on both of these sets.
Maybe this is less of a problem with active sets? I have 2 active screens, but they're both monitors, a VG278 and that Sony 24 inch they were pushing specifically for gaming a few years back. So I have no experience with active televisions.
Libertine, I'm afraid "getting used to" the lag is not an option for me. One of the games I like most to play in 3d is Zen Pinball, and any latency absolutely destroys that experience, as I've found on both of the aforementioned passive sets.
So does anyone know of confirmed low lag _in_3d_mode_ active sets? If not, and monitors are the only really good option, I'm starting to get a better picture of why 3d gaming hasn't taken off like many of us here think it should have... or at least another large obstacle to its success that I hadn't thought of before.

I don't have any experience. If I were forced to buy a new HDTV today, it's what I'd choose. But I'd also be willing to return it in a heartbeat. I'm a robot at sensing input lag.
I bought the Sony HMZ-T1 at launch and immediately knew the thing had some major input lag. Posted these impressions on a gaming forum and gave detailed breakdowns. A couple posters took a hostile opinion and launched personal attacks my way. Needless to say, I had a pretty good laugh when John Carmack developed a tool to read the lag and found it was 50+ ms. I'd finally been vindicated. So I feel your pain. I really hope there are some good 120hz input TVs released in 2014 (now that HDMI 2.0 is about to come out).
EDIT: It's also important to realize that 3D runs with v-sync. So that adds additional lag to the process. It really is tuff if this is your priority. It's always "next year".

Samsung LED 2012/2013 you shouldn't be getting input lag, your shouldn't be using 3DTV mode on a sammy, checkerboard all the way with input label on PC (turns off all the motion smoothing etc). very zippy response rate,
Your not beating or even keeping up with a 120hz super fast LCD monitor for online competitive games like BF4. that is obviously not what HDTVs are built for, much lower ms refresh. and sitting a metre from a 65" could still do with a bit bigger screen. games like Skyrim almost appear at their real size. bigger is better and a 27" aint gonna cut it no matter how close you sit.

Make sure to check reviews for input lag on those two sets you've already owned because there is a huge difference in input lag between brands and models. Some have image processing that isn't able to be turned off. I was regularly at the top of the leader board when i played BF3 and Bad Company 2 and that was just aggressive infantry, not a heli/tank gunner or sniper which were easier to accrue points with. That was with my old Sony NX711 from 2010, which had tons of input lag compared to my newer Samsung ES7500 from 2012.

Let me clarify here that I don't need "super" low lag - I'm really not so hardcore or sensivitive to latency, at least not as much as many gamers. I've never noticed a difference in input lag between 30fps and 60fps (though I still FAR prefer 60fps for different reasons), and I've never noticed lag from stuff like v-sync. It's just that with my passive sets, the difference in 3d mode is so massive that your grandma would notice it. They are also both larger sets at 65 inches, which may have contributed? Do the bigscreens tend to have more?
Really, I'm just LOOKING FOR A 3DTV WHERE 3D MODE IS MORE OR LESS EQUIVALENT TO THE SAME SET'S GAMING MODE 2D. I've never met a tv where standard gaming mode in 2d didn't suffice.
Do active sets allow gaming mode in 3d? Or at least turning off settings that help with performance? Because my passive screens didn't and, again, that's all I have experience with.

Input lag measurements are pretty commonly taken in reviews, so i'd first learn exactly what models you've experience yourself so you can get actual value to go off of in terms of what is too high.

Unfortunately I can't, because as I stated in an earlier post input lag in 3d mode is _not_ stated in reviews. At least, none that I've seen.

Agreed, but I believe it still gives you a good idea, thats all i meant. That is definitely the experience i've had with my several 3DTVs. All of them seem to get only a bit worse in 3D mode, even my VG278H did.

"Do the bigscreens tend to have more?"
i have a 65" sammy series 8, i see no input lag, its a ripper screen.
"I've never met a tv where standard gaming mode in 2d didn't suffice. "
If this is true, you will not be disappointed in the Sammy
Comparing 2D to 3D on the sammy shows no noticable difference in lag (as long as you are using the Sammy input label "PC" for 3D and 2D)
When i compare it to my m17x R2 gaming lappy it is slightly more laggy, but we are talking a minuscule difference. grandma would not notice it period.
If there is one thing i hate its lag between moving the mouse and the game responding, i do not get this from the Sammy. Its an active screen and i play for long periods, up to 6 hours+ without headaches or eyestrain or input lag. Its now my main gaming platform and i play 3D on every game i can.
Worth every cent IMO
