Any way to force games into 120 Hz?
  1 / 2
Hi, just wondering if there's a reliable way of forcing games to run in 120 Hz? It seems few give you refresh rate control these days, and even some that do don't list any modes above 85 Hz. I'm using Vista 32 and a CRT and I've had to use 'add custom resolution' in the nvidia control panel to get 120Hz modes available.

So far I've tried reforce and refreshlock, which unfortunately don't seem to do anything.

In particular I'm trying to get Tomb Raider Underworld and Stalker SOC into 120Hz. TRU actually has a refresh rate selection box, but it maxes out at 85 Hz. Also is there a solution to Portal crashing?

Thanks.

Play around with refreshlock. Start by enablem refeshlock it will show in the task bar, and set the game refreshrate to what ever then start the game, or try going into game then hit Alt tab and then enable refreshlock and see if that works, it took me a while playing around with it in vista, but in win 7 it is abit hard and most of the timerdosen't work. I beleave Nvidia has to revamp there drivers to cover CRT and the 120 hz + LCD..it not listed in the tidd.dll file <--? not sure of file but close ;) to cover higher refreshrates over 85.........CHEERS

Cheers Sharkmeat, I did get Stalker into 120 Hz with refreshlock, Mirrors Edge too, but just can't get TRU to play ball. Oh well.

There is absolutely a way to force games into 120Hz mode.

There are two ways to do it:

run the 3D Vision Setup Wizard. When you get to the question about about if you notice environment flicker, say yes, and select the 120 Hz mode. That will force an override for all games.

Launch the "Test Stereoscopic 3D option." A new dialog box will appear. Select your desired resolution and refresh rate and then select "Apply this refresh rate to all games." That will force a refresh rate override for any game.
Cheers Andrew. The odd thing is though - I've never seen either of those options - I go through the wizard, it says '3D ready display not found', but let's me pick CRT nonetheless. and then I see the 3D test screens (the left/right eye test and the 3d square test) and then I reach the last page of the wizard. At no point do I see a screen asking about flickering. Also under Test Stereoscopic Vision there is no setting for resolution and refresh rate. There is just launch wizard and launch medical test image.

This is with both 1.15 and the new 1.19 betas. My screen (Dell P1130 21" CRT) has never been detected as 3D Ready. I can get the screen into 120 Hz using add custom resolution but only under Vista. Under Win7 (64 bit) it is impossible to ever get the screen to go above 85 Hz.

So 2 issues, nothing above 85 Hz ever under Win7 64 bit, and my screen is never detected as 3D Ready, even under Vista 32 and even when it's running 120 Hz.

Ah I see how to get the Test Stereoscopic 3D to run now (funnily I didn't try left clicking it lol), so I'll give that a go under Vista to see if it'll help with Tomb Radier Underworld. There's still no way to get Win7 64 bit over 85 Hz though, that's a huge limitation.

To be honest though, the crosstalk is so bad that I'm not sure it's worth it. Even under Vista running a 3D ready game like Batman at 120 Hz, if I close one eye anything that's seen against a darker background is doubled and it's unpleasant to look at. I dunno if the glasses just aren't dark enough when shuttered, or there's a sync issue, or it's CRT afterglow, but the end result just isn't satisfactory.

edit: Nope, still TRU just will not run in anything above 85 Hz (vista 32), even if I select apply 120 Hz to all games in the Test Stereoscopic 3D page.

Right got TRU into 120 Hz with the davemon.inf (just google to find it) unlocked monitor driver, so no 120 Hz issues anymore.

Remaining issues #1 - 3D vision setup doesn't detect my display as 3D Ready (maybe because the setup wizard runs in 1280*1024 which my monitor can't do 120 Hz in?) - I'm not sure whether it should or whether it even matters since it doesn't stop me picking generic CRT and having working 3D effects.

Remaining issues #2 - stereo crosstalk - seeing image intended for one eye in the other, or to put it another way, close one eye and you can still see a double image, especially on anything bright against a darker background. I'd really like some low level control of the shutter sync and timings to see if I can improve this. It has a serious negative impact on the whole experience, at least on my CRT anyway.

Does the davemon.inf work with Win 7 x64? I've tried, it just keeps telling me the driver won't work... If it did work, that would be great!

I have the same monitor and it's never been detected as a 3D monitor, but I don't think it's supposed to right? It is just a generic CRT, isn't it? Also, I get the same cross-talk. I think it's just the monitor. 85hz-120hz, it all has the same amount of cross-talk/ghosting. I can eliminate some by setting the convergence, but there will always be some. The effect is still really good, but I am guessing it's just a monitor limitation... tho I've haven't tested on anything else yet. I normally play at 1600x1200 @ 100hz. I can't tell the difference between 100hz and 120hz and since 100hz is highest it will go for that res, that's what I roll with. :)

I did a little bit of research into editing inf files for 64 bit OS's and came up with this edit to the davemon.inf-
; Manufacturers
    ;-------------------------------------------------
    [Manufacturer]
    %NoLimits%=NoLimits, NTamd64.6.1

    ; Manufacturer sections
    ;-------------------------------------------------
    [NoLimits.NTamd64.6.1]
    %UltraMon%=UltraMon.Install, Monitor\BIGMON
which lets the driver install just fine under Win7 64 bit, but it's not the monitor driver that's the problem, the problem is the nvidia win7 64 bit drivers just refuse to ever go higher than 85 Hz, period, on my system at least. It's not a Win7 problem because with my old 4890 I could get 150 Hz under Win7 64 bit, it's the nvidia drivers. Very odd considering they're selling 3D vision which *needs* 120 Hz

Oh hang on, it actually works!

When you click Add Resolutions the list is still empty (unlike under Vista 32) but if you Create Custom Resolution and select, for instance, 1280*960 @ 120 Hz (GMT timing), it now goes successfully into that mode.

    Result /yes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Ok, in Control Panel click 'system' then at the top left click 'device manager'. Now double click monitors in the list to expand and right click on whichever is your CRT and select 'Update Driver Software'. In the new window that pops up, click 'browse my computer for driver software'. Then click 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'. Then click 'Have Disk', then 'browse' and find the inf file on your PC. Next click OK, highlight 'NoLimits monitor for GeForce 2 Ti/Pro/GTS' and click Next, then it should warn you about the driver being unsigned, but click 'install anyway', and you should be done.

Then when you go into Add Resolution (in the nvidia control panel under Change Resolution) and click Create Custom Resolution the test should now work and the mode will be added correctly.

Just use that inf I linked to above which is already edited.
