But, if someone does want to play with lighting closer to the original reveal, ENB allows you to disable ambient lighting and makes torches a lot more important. I've been playing with it for a while and stuff gets really dark and you really do need a torch. It's really cool.
That sounds very cool :D

May as well add my words of encouragement for a fix here. This is by far the biggest game of 2014 for me and yeah, not going to spoil it playing without shadows. Hopefully our shader overlords didn't just look and the topic title and go like "ok then" lol.

I did have a brief look but was not able to fix it. I plan on coming back to it, but at this stage in my "career" if I can't work something out in the time I spent on this, there is something new going on that I am not familiar with that will require a bit more dedication, and I am busy on other stuff.

I started to play DS2 without a fix with shadows turned off, and mostly it looks good. But in one of the locations I turned shadows on, just to see how it looks - and exploring this dark world with the torch in your hand and all these dynamic shadows that surround you when you walk in some unknown room... it is so great, so I'm waiting for the fix :)

Just hoping :) BTW, out of curiosity, is the collaboration with developers of the game itself (From Software in this case, but also in general) possible at all in this shader fixing business? From my point of view no harm can be done to bring games to 3D Vision Ready state, but input from both sides could be very helpful, I think. But maybe there are some legal or other considerations?

Legally it's a slightly grey area, but the general consensus is that even if it's illegal, no developer in their right mind would act to prevent someone improving their product. As for working with the devs, I've never seen a case where fixers and devs worked together to produce a fix, but sometimes asking nicely will get the developers' attention, and occasionally lead to the fixing it themselves. It's rare, but it never hurts to ask.

It just surprises me if developers of such great titles like Dark Souls 1 and 2 or Skyrim have never seen the amazing worlds they created in 3D stereo :)

FROM Software is a japanese developer, so getting into contact and getting support from them will likely be difficult for anyone who doesn't speak Japanese. Also, I'm not certain how high on their list 3D vision support for PC would be, seeing as they've mainly always been a console developer and their first at launch supported PC title would be Dark Souls 2. If anyone has some way to get in touch with them though, it couldn't hurt to try - I just wouldn't expect anything to come out of this particular case.

Does FROM actually handle the PC port? I thought maybe they got another company to do it for them.

Yep. They handled both internally. That's actually why the first one ended up being basically identical to the console versions - they only had experience working on modern consoles and hadn't touched PC development. Rather than set the game to be able to use higher framerates or resolutions or provide better graphics options, they just tried to get the game functioning as closely as possible to the consoles while trying not to break anything. With Dark Souls 2, they actually made a brand new engine and designed it with PC and next gen consoles in mind, so when they said "PC is the lead platform for Dark Souls 2" they really weren't lying. A lot of people were upset about the lighting downgrade and claimed that the game really wasn't PC first, but if you just look at the textures you can pretty easily tell they had PC in the forefront of their thoughts. There are some textures that are around 8192x8192 resolution, which would be absolutely ridiculous for a game stuck on last gen consoles.
FROM Software is a japanese developer, so getting into contact and getting support from them will likely be difficult for anyone who doesn't speak Japanese.
Turns out I live in Japan and speak Japanese. So I registered myself on their site and I just sent a polite request to fix dynamic shadows in 3D Vision. I also linked to this thread with the explanation that it shows a lot of interest in a 3D fix for this game. I'll post again if I get a response!
