Aren't checkerboard and interlacing just other ways to cut 3D resolution in half? Frame packing is what is used by Blu Ray DVDs, which appear to be full 1920x1080. Is this not correct?

So, I'm glad I own a C8000 Plasma 3D Ready Samsung. I have checkerboard and I'm happy. Maybe those 2011 Samsung TV's may show less ghosting compared to 2010 models, but now that I know it will not support those 3D modes, I'm happy that I bought mine early before 2011 models were out.

Mike,

Yes, checkerboard is half resolution per eye, it's less quality compared to frame packed (full resolution per eye). But have in mind that playing games in 1080p60hz checkerboard is way better than 720p60hz frame packed cause those FULL HD TV's don't handle well 720p. Games look nasty in 3D using such low consolized resolution. And playing games in 3D at 1080p24hz, is definatelly not playable for 90% of games available.

So, Checkerboard is a big advantage that Samsung 2010 TV's have compared to the competition.

Um, I own this tv (specifically the UN55D8000) and you are absolutely wrong. It works. In fact, I even included picture proof of it in a previous post.

One note to anyone who sees terrible ghosting on this tv or any other using checkerboard, I would suggest lowering sharpness to whatever the "none" setting is on your tv. On this Samsung, this is about 17 (out of 100). You think "I want 100 sharpness". But sharpness is just artificial edge enhancement stuff which apparently this Samsung tv is not programmed properly to handle in 3D Checkerboard. It tries to perform enhancement on the raw image which then creates a ghost image. (It's trying to work with the image as if it were one image instead of two.) Anyway, this disappears if you turn sharpness to none, which it should probably be set to none on just about every tv these days. Only thing it's good for is old standard definition television signals. Lucky thing I noticed it.

Back when 3DTV Play was actually working for me, 720p60 did not look like 720p without 3D...it looked chunky and low-res. I have a Samsung UN40D6420, so no checkerboard or interlaced. It definitely wasn't side by side or top/bottom...so what was it and why was it eating up much of my resolution?

1080/24 looked a bit better, but also not like full res 1080. Any idea what's going on?

UN55D8000 I thought this model was a 2010 TV, is it new 2011 models???

Does the ghosting fix about lowering sharpness to none only works for LED or also Plasma?? BTW, will this only work for checkerboard or also frame packed, cause I see some ghosting playing a few games in 3D at 1080p24hz?
Hope this ghosting fix also applies for 2010 models, not just 2011.

The 'D' in xxDxxxx means 2011 models, 'C' designates 2010 models.
Can't speak for LEDs, but on my 2010 plasma the sharpness control is greyed out. Austin thinks that indicates a bug in the 2011 sets as there should be no dependency on sharpness. That makes sense, or perhaps sharpness is normally greyed out on plasmas but not on LEDs. If I go to my HDMI4 input (DirectV) sharpness control is not greyed out.

I have a 2010 model so I can't say for sure about 2011 but are you sure about this. Does your friend know the Checkerboard/Interlaced etc.. options are only available through HDMI1 input...the DVI one. If you use any of the "standard" hdmi inputs you are correct, only the "Fake" 3d and above/below and left/right options are shown. You have to use the DVI HDMI input to open up the other 3D mode options.

How are you lowering sharpness? Whenever you turn on 3D on your tv the sharpness (and other) mode is disabled and is unchangeable.
