Can't believe im writing this because ive mocked the concept of the shield many times. I don't get to spend anywhere near as much time as i would like in the computer room nowadays. Would getting this new Shield device be workable solution to allow me to play my PC games downstairs, through the streaming? im not the least interested in playing native android apps, just streaming my pc games to it (though sadly in 2d) Ive used Steam's streaming onto macbook air - with very mixed results

I believe Volnaiskra has one, and he speaks highly of it. You'd need a strong wifi router, but it should work well. We use these at work (plug them into your router), and they have excellent coverage. If you're having signal trouble, it might be worth picking one up too. http://www.ubnt.com/enterprise/ As it's going through a ceiling, I'd imagine wireless strength would be the most significant bottleneck. It's probably worth getting the Shield Tablet, rather than the first gen unit. However, there's another possible solution. I have a Nexus 7 tablet. I've bought and installed Splashtop on it (and the PC), and connected it to a TV. Result: Streaming desktop to the TV. It's close enough to use my wireless 360 controller with the receiver on the PC (as it has a decent range), and this setup has worked very well over a mediocre wifi connection playing Wolf Among Us. There is lag - too much to play more action-centric games I'd think - but when I've tried it on better wifi connections in the past I was able to play Remember Me, which requires fairly precise timing. In your situation, you'd probably want to use a bluetooth controller tethered to the tablet, as your 360 controller (if you have one) may not stretch downstairs (worth a shot though). So while the Shield is apparently pretty good, you can DIY your own if you have a tablet.

If it's only being used to stream, first gen might not be a bad solution though. It's got the benefit of the really comfortable controller built in. Having to prop up the screen and then buy the extra controller seems like the less convenient approach if it's only being used for streaming (especially since the GPU difference is meaningless under that scenario). I know Nvidia used to have a webpage where they had a list of all their recommended routers. Not sure if they've kept it updated (it's Nvidia, so probably not).

Cheer guys, my router is shite and getting rather old. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/wifi-routers/385720/asus-rt-ac68u The asus router seems top notch and on nvidia's list, mite try and find a used on if I do go with the shield.

I saw that a while ago. It's a pretty nice change. As long as they don't remove the trackpads. I'd personally have preferred a high quality d-pad instead of analog pad, but I kinda get why they did it. P.S. That Nvidia controller sounded kind of awesome. Clickable track-pad that functioned as mouse. Built in mic. Then I went to the FAQ and saw it only worked with the tablets and not directly with a PC. I would have bought that controller day one had that functionality worked directly on the PC.

[.]Valve's revised controller definitely looking better[/.] [.]yeah, real shame the nvidia controller only works with the tablet[/.] Well stupidly, ive taken the plunge, and ordered a shield tablet, I know im gonna regret it, but the lure of a new tablet, with streaming etc couldn't be resisted. Hopefully now while sitting with the dog, or watching some shite on the TV with the wife I can continue to play my pc games

If you are even remotely considering a Nvidia tablet, take a look at the forums. While it's a 1080P Display, it can only stream 720P wirelessly. Also users are reporting cracks in the outer frame, among other things. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/766370/shield-tablet/cracked-edges/2/

Im currently thinking, let the order complete, give it a go, if turns out to be shite, cracked etc, return for refund/credit and instead upgrade my motherboard/processor on PC

Must you really keep trusting nvidia products other than graphics cards? You see they abandoned support for 3D. You see how slow they are in fixing problems. You see how they never really finish anything or strip features of the products over time. Why even consider a nvidia tablet or shield? There are cheaper alternatives. You can find physical controller addons anywhere and there are a couple of android apps that provide streaming services for cheaper tablets such as: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nityaalabs.airstream&hl=en Comment to the steam controller: Looking at it, you can already tell that it will not be good for every game. Believe you me, it will suck looking like that for fighting games. It reminds me of how squished together the Nintendo 3DS buttons are and that they don't submerge you into any 3DS game because it feels THAT terrible for every game. IMO, the DS4 is the perfect controller for ANY game genre. There are also android apps that will let you use it with bluetooth.

What about the genre of "PC games that don't have controller support". I'd agree the PS4 controller would be okay if the trackpad could function as a mouse (maybe it can, I don't know), but it's still not the same as what this controller is trying to do. For fighting games, you can still use your 360/PS4/awesome DIY custom arcade stick. The Valve controller is simply a new tool for jobs where current solutions don't work.

Then you can map the keyboard to the controller. If you are playing directly from PC, DS4Windows have all those types of features. Also, the genre you mentioned is not a genre but first sentence still solves that. Haven't tested but I'm gonna go ahead and say that the android apps have already done this as well. Valve controller is ALMOST the equivalent of playing an android game with an on-screen controller. $10 bet it will not feel right. Why do you think they went over all those revisions? Why buy another new controller that costs the same as a game now if you already have a perfect tool to work with already?

I have had a shield Portable for almost a year now. I received my Shield Tablet a few weeks ago. Streaming is a nice idea but too iffy to work outside the house. the portable had too small of a screen. While the tablet is bigger i haven't done much gameplay via the devices. It would work better if I am connecting it to a TV.
