My Acer GD245HQ review experiences of a new 3D vision user

Updated the review with second video (visible ghosting) link - uploaded the video to Tinypic. Unfortunately they do not allow full HD uploads (the video was 720p), but at least it's online now). I'll try youtube again tomorrow.

Disabling the OverDrive feature does indeed increase ghosting - a lot. No need for pics, safe to say it isn't really an option to keep OD off when using 3D vision. I'll see how I fare switching it on when I want to play - I guess I can live with that, for now at least.

I'm happy the desktop image quality has now improved for me to the point where I can call it 'acceptable'.

I'll give your method a go as soon as I get chance, once again well spotted Appelsap.. You should work for Acer tbh ;) .

Or atleast it might be worth while sending them an E-Mail or something.. Firmware FTW !!!

Good idea, mail sent. This is definately something they could have fixed before shipping this monitor. There is no point in having this massive overdrive active at 60Hz. Let's see if we can get them to improve their product and create a larger market for it. ;)

Dunno. Send me the Samsung and I'll tell ya.
JK. There's bound to be a few Samung 2233rz owners that have bought or seen the Acer and can tell you. I am not one of them. Search the web and you're bound to find some clues.

Well the Acer seems to be the best one right now.

See this review.

There conclusion was:
The GD245HQ is faster and has more accurate colours than other 120 Hz monitors we've seen, giving it the crown of the best 3D monitor currently available. And it's the only one with a 24'' display.

You can also compare the Samsung with the Acer if you like. Click on Computer Monitor Product Face-Offs.

Nice, good to see another review of it.

I played some more with it last night, in a totally dark room with the overdrive on and the nVidia goggles, and man - what a rush. I loved playing Assassin's Creed when it came out, and I'm loving it again. It looks sooo real. Adjusting the convergence helped a great deal btw in getting it setup just right.

BTW, Acer replied I can change the overdrive settings in the nVidia control panel. /ermm.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ermm:' /> Must be a standard reply. Nice try, no cigar.

Appelsap: How does disabling the overdrive affect performance in 2d gaming (without 3D-vision glasses)?

I'm eying this monitor up for a possible purchase as it becomes available here but I'm spending way more time in desktop environment reading things than I do gaming so I'm a bit unsure after seeing those halo-letters. I'm not planning to get the 3D-vision equipment so my use would be normal 2D gaming and desktop applications.
Thanx, tiny glitch, updated the specs.

I'm thinking of keeping the Acer, and getting a good all day use screen. Maybe I can mount them on the same stand back-to-back, and turn the whole thing around for gaming. /stud.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':stud:' />

No need to doubt yourself so soon :)

In some cases, I've had the same problem. Adding depth means moving the objects further apart - thus the ghost image will be visible more. Changing the convergence means moving close objects even closer, in which case I ended up looking at two seperate pictures in stead of 3D. I believe you cannot solve ghosting this way - it's an inherent flaw in the design, the panel just cannot change certain pixels that fast. The only real sollution will be to buy a CRT/DLP or wait.

3D won't change the nature of the game. If it wasn't really good to begin with, it will certainly not get any better =)

Hmm, any particular reason 3D doesn't work well for Crysis - is it because you need eight quad-SLI rigs in a grid to get a decent framerate at an acceptable visual level, or do the graphics simply not work right?

That crosshair thing is annoying. Thankfully the Source engine can turn it off, playing with it does 'kill the experience'.

Found some small glitches, such as the brightness level not resetting right after exiting 3D gaming mode, but those are minor gripes imo.
Have you guys tried Crysis in DX9 for 3d vision.. let me say I was pleasantly surprised. i don't mind giving up some of the visuals. ALot of the effects that give 3d vision a problem are because of how they implemented the game in DX10.

compare the two please.

to run it in dx9 you just drop -dx9 behind the executeable in a short cut link or batch file.

I'm also interested in this monitor, but will be using it for 3dgaming if i purchase it. I'm glad to hear that Appelsap is having a nice time with it. Still thinking about it.

Appelsap on overdrive with 3d goggles on is the brightness still ok on max? I read that it can get sometimes too dark in the game which makes it difficult to see certain objects.
if i'm not mistaken you said that the brightness is important for the 3d nvidia goggles. Did you try other games also like Call of duty 2, Devil may cry, Resident Evil?

Till now your overall experience seems to be very good. Too bad they don't have this in pc stores so you can test it. You have too see it to believe it. B)

I would say brightness is ok, sure. The point is that the glasses for 3D vision take away some of the light, both by being slightly tinted - the polarization filter will do that I think - and by blacking out each eye half of the time. When they switch on, they darken everything you see. In effect, the display needs to be bright. It is though, bright enough to compensate. I think every game I've played so far looks just great, colors are good and for most the 3D effect is stunning.

I do not own any capcom games I fear, not my style. I tried a lot of steam games (portal, HL2, CSS, L4D, Team Fortress 2), some racing games, Assassins Creed - my fav so far. I have yet to try FEAR, Crysis (I/II), Far Cry (I/II), Tomb Raider Underworld and the likes. Haven't got much time though, have to work, take care of the kids n wife and then some.

But overall I'm quite pleased indeed. It's an improvement over my previous Samsung TN panel, it brings me great 3D gameplay and acceptable 2D viewing. People with nice PVA or IPS screens could well be disappointed though, so it really depends on what you expect from this display.

Well, I can't measure it's responsiveness, but with the 3D Vision on the ghosting is terrible, so my guess would be that with the overdrive off it probably performs equally well as most standard fast displays do, at least similar to the 226CW I have (which has the same panel as the 226BW does, only a different backlight). Hope this helps. Perhaps in the weekend, when I have a bit more time, I can try to make a video or sorts and see if I can capture any differences.

Acer responds well. I've explained the overdrive issues with screen quality in more detail, and suggested they fix this in the monitor's firmware: simply disable the overdrive feature at 60Hz, and enable it at any higher frequency. That would do the trick.

Their reply:
"We would surely get try to work on it ,may be we can come up with an resolution . But implementation would not be on one corner of the issue and would take necessary time for further improvements .
Would reply back to soon once we come up with an resolution from our end"

Wow, you'd almost think they got it. Well, for no it's just wait and see what happens.
