Future of 3d PC Gaming Share your thoughts
Andrew, let me start off by saying thank you for simplifying the driver installation by including the controller driver with the display driver.
This was a big gripe for me in one of my posts. It feels as though you or somebody at Nvidia read it and acted on it, even if a fix was already in the works.
Now as for the topic.--Having spent a buttload of money on my new system and graphics card, I'm somewhat concerned about the pace of improvements and updates to the 3d gaming platform in general.
I think most people will agree that Nvidia is looked upon as the leader in computer graphics, period. Being as such, it's a given that in the best
interest of Nvidia, it's customers and PC gaming in general that improvements come at a frequent and steady pace until a level is reached at which
customers can say to themselves "I'm happy with this system as it now stands".
With the release of Crysis 2, there have been an enormous amount of complaints that the game has been downgraded to optimize it for consoles.
No dx11, tesselation, shadowing, etc. The 3d system used in the game, for me, is no better than the 2d-3d conversion(which is crap)that my TV supports
as is.
While I agree that this is a Crytek problem, I also think it's an Nvidia problem in that new games are being released that are not implementing the full abilities of the products Nvidia has invested untold sums of money to develop.
Unless Nvidia just wants to be a supplier and manufacturer of console, medical, and gpu processing graphics, it seems to me to be in the best interest of Nvidia and the PC gaming platform to try to increase the demand for top notch PC graphics and 3d playability.
I personally believe this can only be accomplished by making the level of awesomeness(is that a word?)so high that anyone playing on a console
is going to be so envious that they are going to take the money they spend on consoles and console games and spend it instead on Nvidia PC graphics
solutions.
I fear that the current pace of progress is such that 3d PC gaming is in danger of being stillborn, and making all of our investments a "flash in the pan". If that happens, you can probably count on 3d monitor and TV manufacturers dropping support for 3d alltogether.
While I salute Nvidia for adding another mod on the forums and I appreciate the time, effort and expertise involved in coding, de-bugging and compiling, "crossing every T" and dotting every "i", I can't help feeling more needs to be done.
Perhaps if Nvidia were to treat 3d as a "Manhatten Project"(excuse the analogy) by applying many more resources and personell to the project, they could achieve this level of "awesomeness" in a reasonable time frame. That will keep this genre thriving.

Between the 3ds, the 3d support on ps3 and xbox360, and the current updates to the games and price drops, I think the 3d is going to keep getting more popular...with a trend that people who can't try it typically don't say how 'poor' they are, they instead lie and claim that they don't want to do it, when they actually cannot afford it or otherwise cannot have it. :) Most of the online people's comments that have tried it appear to love it, and I personally think it's as big an upgrade as going form 2d->wolf3d, except now it's flat3d->real3d. The driver updates are fixing the bugs too, it keeps getting faster and less buggy, but is still very new and pretty expensive, I think the cheapest option is the 3ds, and that can be demo'd at stores now?
