Unable to complete 3D vision wizard 3D drivers not working properly :(
Hi all,

Im really hoping you can help me here.

I've just bought a new Alienware OptX AW2310 and the NVidia GeForce 3D Vision kit.
I have an Inno 3D GTX 480.
I am using the dual link DVI cable that came with the Alienware monitor.
I am running Win 7 64-bit Ultimate.

I followed the instructions for the 3D vision kit and uninstalled the graphics driver and tried to install the graphics driver from the supplied CD.
I get an error stating that my card is not supported.
OK, I figured the drivers on the CD predate the GTX 480, so downloaded and installed the latest nVidia drivers:

257.21_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql.exe

I then installed the corresponding 3D Vision drivers:
NVIDIA_3D_Vision_v257.21_driver.exe

When the 3D Setup wizard invokes, I can see on the last line of first page that it confirms the drivers are installed
On the IR emitter page, I plug in my emitter and the light goes white, brown then dull green as expected.
The page instructs me to press the emitter button, I do, but the light stays dull green. It does not turn bright green.
I click next anyhow.
I click the recommended gaming environment (leftmost) and click next.
it says 3d ready display found "Alienware OptX AW2310. I click next.
The the setup wizard crashes and an error dialog which reads:

"Error in Stereo NvAPI,
NvAPI_Stereo_IsActivated() returned error."

I click OK. Another error dialog appears

"Exception in Stereo NvAPI,
in NvAPI_Stereo_IsActivated()."

I click OK.

If I open the nVidia Control Panel->3D Vision->Set up stereoscopic 3D
and try to tick the "Enable stereoscopic 3D" checkbox, I get thrown to the setup wizard that fails as above with the 2 errors.
Then Im back at the Set up Stereoscopic 3D page, but the Enable stereoscopic 3D checkbox is checked!
So I click the "Test Stereoscopic 3D"button and the app launches!
The emitter LED glows bright green and I can see 3D images of the Nvidia logo moving forwards and backwards.

I press ESC to exit, the emitter LED turns dim green and the screen turns black, nothing happens. I turn off the monitor and turn it on again and Im back at the desktop.

If I press the hotkeys or the emitter button, i dont get response. When I try Avatar, its not 3D.

Can someone kindly assist me please?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

You'll want to grab the latest CD Driver set here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce-3d-vi...eta-driver.html

The problem you're most likely seeing is you're trying to use a newer GeForce driver that includes the the display driver and the 3D stereo driver with the older 3D Vision CD kit, which includes an older version of those two components but also has the USB driver that's required for the receiver to work properly. The problem however is that you have to use one of these CD driver kits to initialize the USB transmitter and it does check graphics and stereo driver versions, so if they're too different from revision to revision, it won't be compatible.

Long story short, there's a 3D Vision CD driver kit that includes the USB driver that's tied to a particular GeForce driver release, unfortunately all GeForce driver releases include an updated 3D Vision CD driver kit. Typically, you can use the latest GeForce graphics driver with the latest 3D Vision CD driver kit for the USB driver, it will warn you that you about this being an older driver, just say "No to All" when it prompts you to overwrite newer files.

But if you use the driver kit linked above, you don't have to worry about any of this, its more to explain why you might be having a problem with driver versions and what you can do next time there's a new graphics driver without an updated 3D Vision CD kit.

This fixed the issue for me. I had to do two installs, one for the Version of the Nvidia Drivers and one for the Driver USB SW. Once I did that, the test ran fine. When you download the latest drivers and then Launch the Executable, you will notice two things you need to install from the set-up wizard. When you do the first one, restart your PC and then install the second one.

Or you can goto Run->
type in "services.msc"
and from there goto

"NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3d Driver Service" and click on it and then click on "stop"

That will enable the drivers to install/work properly when you are updating the drivers.
Or you can goto Run->

type in "services.msc"

and from there goto

"NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3d Driver Service" and click on it and then click on "stop"

That will enable the drivers to install/work properly when you are updating the drivers.

Hmm, good to know. This would make a good sticky for those of us going bald, pulling our hair out, trying to figure out why 3D Vision blows up everytime an update rolls around.

Now if I could just figure out how to get my Steam games to start at my native resolution and not vga. Or how to keep it from spontaniously kicking into 3D mode (at times when I'm preferring 2D) just as I'm about to pull a dazzling jump/shoot/taunt move, only to recover my screen in time to see my dead body.

Sorry for the off topic rant but since my problems start with issues similar to the OP's...

I suppose everything I needed to know is here but I stopped coming here because this forum is so hard to navigate. At least when it come to searching for specific problems.

Thanks guys for getting me on the right track. Though I nearly hosed my system I was able to recover and get the drivers installed properly.

It was a matter of some urgency because I wanted it to work in time for the NASCAR race tomorrow(7/3/10). After a good deal of cussing and waiting for at least 8 reboots I was finally able to get the test video working only to find out it was the Nationwide race live. Bonus.
