x-fi and 5.1 possible ?
  2 / 2
no ur still not understanding. i am not disagreeing with creative being able to PLAY preencoded sources. what im telling u is that creative CANNOT ENCODE INTO DOLBY. it has no problem playing a dvd in 5.1 or 7.1 but only through its analog ports.

what it cannot do is what this card can do

http://www.xoxide.com/bluegears-xmystique-ddl-gold.html

or this card

http://www.diamondmm.com/XS71DDL.php

there really is a big diffarence, and rite off of creatives own website "eax uses sound manuplation to provide 7.1 suround sound" aka emulation.

what these other cards do is ENCODE your games to true 5.1 or 7.1
(also u canu use the opti out for this unlke the creative card's)

cmon when was the last time u saw EAX in a movie theatre ?

also refer to this artical that was written before these cards were available

You dont give up, do you. I dont think u know what EAX is, what 5.1/7.1 really is, or basically what you are talking about.

Unless you are a developer, why would you want to encode into dolby? What games do you know that need dolby encoding? for what purpose? what possible reason is there for a game to need dolby encoding? ask yourself?

Dolby is already encoded into the game, and the soundcards decode it, and output to the speakers. You dont encode dolby when you play it through speakers, you decode it. Only a film maker or game dev encodes dolby. Read that over and over till you understand.

The cards can also produce propper 5.1 and 7.1, when there are 5.1 and 7.1 encoded channels. EAX makes the typical stereo (thats 2 channels, which im assuming you dont know either) into 5.1 or 7.1 because there is no 5.1 or 7.1 source. And again, its not called EAX, its called CMSS, and is a part of EAX tech. EAX tech as a whole is used to immerse people into games more than simple stereo by using advanced sound processing. If anything, it can be classed as an API. Why would a movie need EAX? does it need OpenGL and DirectX too? and maybe an ethernet card as well?

Theatres that are playing a stereo stream will multiply the stereo through to all its speakers, so the left part of the cinema produces the left signal, and right part of the cinema produces the right signal. This is exactly what one of the options in CMSS does, which is a part of EAX, so YES theatres do use a form of EAX, albeit they call it something else.

Your first post asked if you run the signal through your decoder, would you get 5.1 if the source was encoded 5.1, and the answer is YES. About 5 of us have tried to tell you this.

Dolby encoding for playing games... sheesh

Now stfu.

hehehe.. audio visual expert my arse

If you want to encode audio.. USE THE SOFTWARE THAT IS BUILT FOR THIS PURPOSE

If you are a musician... THEN YOU WOULD NOT EVEN BE CONSIDERING A GAMING SOUNDCARD IN THE FIRST PLACE

You patently have no clue as to what EAX is and at least if you're going to talk crap about a product do it in a relevant forum.

Even though this thread doesn't belong, I have to set the record straight and make you all feel like a bunch of idiots. What he's talking about isn't all that uncommon at all, especially in theater setups.

Now, what happens when you connect your PC digitally to an external decoder and play a Dolby Digital/EAX game? You get PCM out of the optical/digital port, not AC3, therefore your external decoder simply gets handed stereo sound. This is because these games don't really have a pre-encoded ac3 stream like a DVD does, the data just gets processed into analog sound and spit out of the analog outs of your soundcard to your crappy computer surround speaker setup. Example, from the back of UT2004 "sound cards containing the Dolby® Digital Interactive Content Encoder required for Dolby Digital audio"

Furthermore, if you've ever tried one of these analog 7.1 channel setups you'll know that you get a 7.1 upmix when listening to music, with the optical/digital connection you get 2 channel PCM, yet again. You don't have to be a sound engineer, musician, etc to want this setup, you simply have to want to connect digitally to an external decoder and have the same features that you do with the analog connections.

Well....now for something COMPLETELY different.

Anyone out there using a 7600GT?

Any luck getting it to work in stereo?

Thanks in advance,

still not following this to well, but gona try and make some sense of it in my own head

the guy originally asked about the X-Fi & 5.1, not about encoding, and the X-Fi can do 7.1, you can use the card to decode the signal & process the audio or you can output from the card to an external decoder & use that to process the audio

so for example, i can use my pc downstairs on my plasma tv, i can connect my X-Fi to my own AMP & Decoder, send the AC3 or PCM signal to that & it can then sort out the sound around my living room

im not really sure why the hell you would want to encode in dolby ? everything you use i.e. games are already encoded, you just need a system that can decode the sounds, and an X-Fi will do that or it can output to a separate decoder

and dont say it cant because it can, its branded as supporting THX, Dolby EX & DTS
i was reading around about the x-fi and im a little confused. back when soundstorm was the s#%t i rember reading an article that it was the only way to get true 5.1. but that didnt make sence to me either. so now i want to get me one of them new x-fi platiniums, and i want to know if i run it into my 5.1 reciever will i get true 5.1 for things that are so encoded or is there somthing elsi i would need to get ?  i would of course user the digital output on it either digital coax or opti.

Just ignore the other posts ... this is what you'd need:
http://www.creative.com/products/product.a...6&product=14191

Admittedly, it does no DolbyDigital 5.1 but if your amp supports DTS as well, you're set to enjoy .. if you can live with the DAAD conversion that seems to be mandatory in this case.

:)

Besides that, this is really the wrong forum for audio questions.

Cheers,
Maggi
