Asus VG236 + 3D Vision Kit
  1 / 2
Hi,

Received my monitor along with a new GTX 470 yesterday and thought I'd share my experiences.
I'd welcome any feedback as to whether my experiences are typical and if I'm doing anything wrong as well.

Went for the Asus rather than the Acer on a few factors, primarily 3 year warranty v. 2 year, the fact that the stand is adjustable and the hope that it's a newer therefore 'better' monitor. Also decided in the end that the glossy screen might look better after all, since light control is not an issue where my pc is set up.

First impressions of the monitor are basically that it's great. I was coming from a 22" LG which is a couple of years old, but out of the box the Asus is much brighter, sharper and colours are more vivid. 120Hz looks great and although it seems that generally the 3D monitors are double the price of the 2D monitors, you are getting a quality screen that even in 2D mode justifies some of the additional expense.

3D Vision.

I want to like it and I think I need to give it time to get used to it, but honestly I was expecting to be 'wowed' and that wasn't the case.
I was really surprised how much darker the image is once the glasses are active. The monitor is at 100% brightness, which in some reviews was described as too bright, but I don't find that the case in 2D even with the lights off, and in 3D the image is dimmed too much.
The other potentially bigger issue in my experience, is that I'm getting constant flickering.. It's there all the time and it's noticeable on anything with bright colours. I even noticed it straight away during the 3d vision setup wizard. The greens in the Nvidia logo etc. were constantly flickering. It's a faint effect, like a flourescent tube, but I really wasn't expecting it to be so obvious.

I'll be updating to the latest 3D vision and Geforce drivers later when get home, so hopefully it's just a driver issue or something like that. I would have thought 120Hz would be pretty much flicker free? It's not the monitor, it's definitely something to do with the glasses.

The 3D effect is very good and I've played about with convergence etc. so I know there's a lot of potential tweaking. I'm still looking forward to playing through a load of games in 'proper' 3d but I really hope I can sort the flickering out, unless it's just me?

Cheers.

Try using 100Hz or 110Hz, sometimes can be better under some lighting and reduce the flickering to non-existent.

Definitely get the updated drivers as the ones on the disk are basically useless. As soon as I got my kit I tossed the disk and downloaded the newest set off of the website and haven't had any problems with flickering or anything. As far as the brightness, this monitor is ridiculously bright out of the box and I had to turn it down quite a bit for normal viewing. If at stock settings, in the dark, it's not making you almost blind you may have a bad monitor because 100 brightness on this monitor is like staring at the sun from two feet away

I basically followed a review I saw and turned the brightness to 44 and set the colors to warm to get an optimal picture and it's still brighter than my last monitor.

Thanks for both of the replies. I tried the other refresh rates during setup and that flickered even more.

I'm definitely installing new drivers as soon as I get home. Downloaded them today.

Regarding brightness, I'll have another play. I suppose there could be something wrong with the monitor, since from what you're saying it shouldn't even be an issue whatsoever and my eyes aren't that bad!

Thanks.

If you are under floresent bulbs you may have a flicker effect due to the nature of the bulbs. Incadesent bulbs are a glowing element and do not flicker like a floresent one can. Not sure if this is an issue with the flicker but there may be a possibility of it and switching to 100hz refresh rate un sync's the display's rate with household current frequency. Imagine one eye getting a flash from the floresent bulb and the other does not. This is a thought but not confirmed at this time because I have yet to recieve my display.

Well I've come to the conclusion that it's probably me and that I'll have to just get used to it..

As far as brightness is concerned I'm assuming that the monitor is ok and it's just the intial drop in light when the glasses activate that caught me by surprise. Still, things look a bit dark to me so maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe gamma adjustment will help.

Regarding the flickering, it's ever present but only really noticeable in brightly lit scenes or when I get particularly close to the monitor, then I notice it through my peripheral vision.
It's not related to lighting conditions and lowering the refresh rate only makes it worse, so I'm assuming I'm just a bit sensitive to it!

You are shutting all curtains etc etc making the room as dark as possible i presume? Any external light causes interference on my Viewsonic setup.

The flickering could just be you. I got an ASUS as well and I'm not seeing it a bit. I would see flickering on CRT monitors all the time unless they were set to 70Hz or higher (particularly white areas and particularly on the edge of vision) while most people seem to be fine at 60Hz so I assume I'm a bit extra sensative to it but maybe you're even more sensitive than I am.

The lack of being wow'ed kinda makes me wonder, though. Maybe the timings are getting off whack somewhere? Try going to the popout screenshot thread in this forum and try a few of those screenshots - they should have elements that appear to come right out of the screen.

Is there anyone else around that can try the setup? Then we can tell a bit better what's you and what's hardware.

P.S. To add what I can to the review, I'm loving this monitor. I'm coming from CRT land so I'm not real sure if the colors are particularly good for an LCD or what but it sure looks great to me. I've also seen very little ghosting. If I can get something white against a field of black toward the top of my monitor I can get a bit of ghosting but, after a week of going through my game collection, I've only noticed that happening once.

The brightness is an issue for sure. Having your glasses absorb half (?) the light coming in hurts. Having depth helps so much, though, that it's well worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback.

I do really like the kit and I'm hoping to get more people to try it tomorrow, as it's probably me being fussy and don't get me wrong, I'm generally impressed with the monitor particularly.

Funny you should mention ghosting as I noticed it quite a bit, in the static shot from tombraider (?) in the setup wizard and the mirrors edge video on the disk that came with it. I'm not too disappointed about that though, as it looks like it's inherent to all lcds. I was close to buying a H5360 to replace my exising projector setup actually, but came to the conclusion that a monitor would be more practical and in any case would be an upgrade to what I had, which it is :-)

Strange. The indoor picture for Tomb Raider (you can find these "C:\Users\Public\Pictures\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision Experience\3D Vision preview pack 1" on Windows 7) has no ghosting I can find. The picture on the boat has... something in the lower right. It looks like ghosting but it's a swirly green and magenta mess. We've got the same monitor and glasses - strange that they are acting so different.

That's Overdrive ghosting, where the pixel isn't able to transition between the two colors it needs to switch between in stereo fast enough so Overdrive is used to overvolt the pixel to try and improve its switching speed but instead the pixel just produces an off-color mix. Depending on what panel you're using, adjusting Contrast or disabling Overdrive can greatly reduce or mitigate the problem. On my AW2310, setting Contrast to 45 eliminates this; disabling Overdrive can result in other problems though I imagine, and may increase traditional light/dark ghosting.

Good point raised there. I did see mention on here somewhere that overdrive is adjustable through the OSD on the asus but I can't see anything on the monitor or the documentation. Is it the same as 'trace-free'? Not sure if I can adjust/override that in 3d mode but maybe it's worth giving that a go.

On the outdoor tombraider shot, I could see ghosting from both sides of the boat but no discolouration anywhere.

Ah, thanks Chiz! There sure is a lot to learn about this stuff. (Kinda fun learning it, too. ;))

Let's see here... the printed instructions are handy for comparing the world's most popular languages but little else. What does the PDF manual say? Hmmm.... do not eat monitor while it is running... you must use the DVI cable... brightness, contrast, and "Splendid" settings are disabled in 3D mode....

Ah, use trace free to speed up response time by Trace Free Technology. That could be it. Might as well try fiddling with it.

Ya it takes awhile to get accustomed to all the new terminology and what you're seeing, there's some really good reviews to help formalize the different types of ghosting, but generally people agree there's at least 3 different kinds. For the overdrive ghosting, you can check out this review at 3D Vision Blog that shows it very clearly in the same scene from that Tomb Raider screenshot. I used to get a lot of this too in Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 near the bottom of the screen with a lot of separation before I tweaked Contrast.

And here's a guide to help reduce ghosting, I'm not sure if the Asus has the same level of control or if there's an OSD or service menu that allows you to change these settings, but it gives you an idea of what you can try to reduce this specific form of ghosting. I was ecstatic to find the fix on my AW2310, as the overdrive ghosting was the only kind that really bothered me because its right in your main field of view near the middle-bottom of the screen, especially in 3rd person games. Top/bottom and light/dark ghosting don't bother me nearly as much.
