Aye
But the device can be used for 3D Movies and 3D non VR games, which would be my primary use for the device since for the most part, I'm not interested in "VR Experience" type stuff. Plus whatever games I can play using VorpX and what not.
The line has certainly blurred from the initial devices where 3D Vision monitor type of games did not work well because of the camera, UI and weapon/hands/body placements.
I'm with Metal-O-Holic. I was hoping for something a few steps above the rest. But it looks like they were more interested in hitting a price point that appealed to the masses vs higher priced enthusiast gear that would be money well spent.

The problem isn't simply the resolution, it's also the display type. Valve's Index uses LCD's, and early reports are that this greatly reduces the screen-door effect. Also, it's 120-144 Hz, not 90, so motion sickness is also greatly eliminated.
Here's Zelda: Breath of the Wild fully playable in VR on PC: https://youtu.be/CvrjNLsGQZI
I'm glad I never picked up a Rift or Vive, when I can afford to do so I intend to pick up an Index, maybe sometime later this year.
I have a lot of racing games that are hands down a better experience in VR vs. 3D Vision (being able to look into the turns for one) to include Redout and Project Cars (2) that I'm looking forward to playing, among other titles.
I will stay on 425.31 for as long as possible, but unless I can figure out some kind of dual boot scenario that isn't too problematic, with an OS with 425.31 and the other with newer display drivers needed for newer games, i.e. Rage 2, Doom: Eternal and whatever else I may have to part with it sometime in the near future.
Most of my games look and run better on my curved 3440x1440 AW3418DW G-Sync panel anyhow, I only have a handful of games that I have yet to finish that look better in 3D: The Witcher 3 and Dark Souls 3, and maybe another play-though of Rise of Tomb Raider with the 8700k (last time the 3 core bug was horrendous in Geothermal Valley, I'm curious to see how the 8700k fares here and this game looks stunning in 3D). But yeah, having bounced back and forth between AW3418DW and PG278Q with XCOM: WOTC and Batman: AK and realizing that I don't like having to fight with the convergence each and every time the scene changes during character load-outs and camera changes with the former and the stutter filled dips down to 40 FPS whilst flying or driving the batmobile because of 3 core bug on top of a horrible port with the latter I realized that yeah, I only have The Witcher 3 at the moment that looks and runs decent in 3D vs 3440x1440 G-Sync 75-90 FPS. And the color and contrast difference between AW3418DW and PG278Q, dear god I had no idea. IPS is better than TN here.
If you peruse the Ultrawide Master Race sub-reddit every 3rd or 4th post approximates "I HAD NO IDEA HOW MUCH BETTER CURVED 21:9 IS!" and "I just received my curved 21:9 monitor, best purchase decision I've ever made in my life!".
https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/
And it needs to be pointed out that 21:9 isn't squishing the image vertically, a common misconception, it's taking 16:9 and adding 25% more horizontally.
Point is, there are better ways to do this, I imagine VR for a few titles and curved ultrawide for everything else is a really nice alternative to 3D Vision.
It was fun while it lasted, but 3D Vision was always a middle-ware technology, I don't think they ever would have been able to address the shortcomings, notably the 60 FPS cap and double-talk (the way distal objects don't align properly) and the fact that this is really only suited to TN panel technology. Add ridiculously uncomfortable green tinted glass to the mix and the 3 core bug and yeah, it's just time to move on.
There is a Buddhist precept that I think is apt here. "Every obstacle is an opportunity".
The opportunity is to realize that there are better ways to enjoy a gaming experience. If your concept of it is limited to a green-tinted, CPU bottleneck induced 40 FPS, double-talk laden stutter-fest in flat 16:9 I assure you, once you try other mediums you will quickly see what I'm talking about.
I'm telling you right now that some games look and feel way better in curved ultrawide with variable refresh rate technology.
I just got back into Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and this game is optimized well enough that it runs at 120 FPS nearly everywhere maxed out with a 1080 Ti @ 3440x1440. It's so smooth, bright vivid colors and contrast, I can't imagine this experience in flat 16:9 @ 60 FPS on the PG278Q.
Dark Souls 3, however, does look great on the PG278Q in 3D Vision, and the engine is limited to 60 FPS so there are a few exceptions, to include The Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider etc.
The point is, this isn't the end of the world, there are still other, and situationally better, ways to enjoy video games.

Tbh, I think its Dead on Arrival - great for enthusiasts/first time VR buyers but I think HTC is folding and Valve wants to keep its feet wet and not lose the market. IMO, no one who isnt avid already is going to pick up a $1K device even with AAA titles which aren't coming with it. People think its build the hardware and people will come but... indie developers got burned for doing VR games. They are done.
I think it will be GREAT to look for existing titles/simulation but I think less and less games are going to be developed. Honestly Oculus cable free device will get more play because cost of development for those types of games will be way down and easier adoption.
I've seen 2 articles about it since is announcement/price on kotaku/destructoid and no one cared even with Valve name attached to it.

AUO just announced some new VR panels
https://www.auo.com/en-global/New_Archive/detail/News_Archive_Technology_190513
For VR headsets, the 2.9-inch LTPS display has ultra high resolution (3456 x 3456) and ultra high pixel density of 1,688 PPI. Adopting mini LED backlight technology with active matrix (AM) driver circuit, the display possesses as many as 2,304 local dimming zones for HDR images to reveal perfect image depth and details for lifelike gaming experience.
Hmmm, it seems that for some Unity games, there is a template that works for VR

But the device can be used for 3D Movies and 3D non VR games, which would be my primary use for the device since for the most part, I'm not interested in "VR Experience" type stuff. Plus whatever games I can play using VorpX and what not.
The line has certainly blurred from the initial devices where 3D Vision monitor type of games did not work well because of the camera, UI and weapon/hands/body placements.

Why did you quote me?
My post has nothing to do with your ultrawide pancake 2d screen bullshit nor do I care about gay ass Zelda in VR.
Nor do I have an issue with SDE nor motion sickness using my Odyssey Plus.
Nothing beats resolution..quit tryna force the Index refresh rate bullshit down my throat.
You dumb cyclops

I think it will be GREAT to look for existing titles/simulation but I think less and less games are going to be developed. Honestly Oculus cable free device will get more play because cost of development for those types of games will be way down and easier adoption.
I've seen 2 articles about it since is announcement/price on kotaku/destructoid and no one cared even with Valve name attached to it.

Hmmm, it seems that for some Unity games, there is a template that works for VR
