Upgrade CPU, which one is the best cost x benefit for 3D Vision?
  1 / 3
Hey Guys, I need some advice, which CPU would you guys recommend for an upgrade? I will have to upgrade mobo, memory and CPU and I have a 1070. I am thinking might be best to get an i5-8600K, but the kit mobo\cpu is still expensive and difficult to find, so will have to wait a bit longer for that maybe, or should I get one of the Rysen? If so which one would be good? Would that be a huge difference? I only play 3D Vision games in 1080p on a 3D TV and VR games with the Rift. What are your suggestions?

I have an i5 6600K and there is no bottle-necking on a GTX 1080, so I am sure an i5 8600K will be fine with a 1070. As an aside, Amazon is still selling Skylake CPUs and mobos, for less than current gen - and they still allow you to install win 7 without issues. Also, I'm not sure of the 8600 OC potential but just about every 6600k can clock to 4.6GHz without issue, I have mine at 4.5GHz and it doesn't even really get hot with one of these https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rpTmP6/zalman-cpu-cooler-cnps10xoptima on it.

If it's Intel, 8600K or 8700K. Don't buy a 4c/4t or 4c/8t CPU now that there are 6c/6t and 6c/12t CPUs available. Ryzen is fine for current games, but if you use emulators or <2015 games frequently, Intel is a better option. The Witcher 3 and Deux Ex MD are some examples I have that run a lot better with 4c/8t than 4c/4t. I've seen benchmarks and a 8600K (6c/6t) is a bit better (and cheaper) than the 7700K (4c/8t), and the 8700K is even better.

Perhaps I should wait a bit more to get the 8600k coz I cant find it right now. The kit cpu/mobo seems to be more expensive than a Rysen, but might be better in the long run? I like the idea of the Rysen because i would not have to replace my mobo in a future upgrade of CPU, but also dont want to do another upgrade anytime soon, so maybe a coffee i5 should last forever? :D

@J0hnnieW4ker: Hey, your PC looks pretty similar to mine. :) Do you really experience some bottlenecking with the i7 860 ? In the VR games maybe? Maybe with another cooler you could squeeze some MHz more out of it. This could be enough to wait a bit longer for a hardware upgrade. I got a Megahalems Rev.B and I can run the i7 870 with 3.8GHz. 4.0GHz is stable too, but temperatures are getting dangerous then in Prime (87°C :-/ ). Per-MHz-Performance from Nehalem to Skylake was around 20% and newer series didn't do some magic there, so the jump would not be really big. You can still slightly outperform a i5-6600K@standard clocks.

For instance, in BF4 while I get 60/80 FPS in 2D (ultra), my friend with the same 1070 card gets 80/120. And BF4 in 3D I get 30fps and my friend gets 60/80, huge difference for the same GPU. I really don't want to mess with overclocking right now, coz it is working fine with the VR games and I am mostly playing VR games. It would be a huge improvement for the VR games as well to keep steady 90fps at all times but it is not something that is bothering me that much coz I only have a feel noticeable drops in some games, however, 3D Vision games are really bad and I get terrible FPS even on really old games, like really really old games that would probably run above 200fps all max in 2D and in 3D are terrible below 45fps, probably because of the 3D Vision CPU limitations. I was really pissed off when I did some tests after replacing my GTX780 with the 1070 and have absolutely 0% improvements in 3D Vision. I think I will wait a bit to get an i5 8600k as I am not desperate yet and I think would be better than rushing to get a Rysen now.

For example (worst case): In Fallout3 there is a place I get 18fps @ 3.8GHz. But it's just 19fps @ 4.0GHz. CPU usage 20%, GPU usage 30%. You can sum it up what the fps will be with a modern CPU @ 4.5GHz or something like that. I doubt that you could reach 30fps in this place, there is just another limitation. So you wouldn't get the fps you dream of, only with a new cpu. 3D-Vision-driver somehow has a big bottleneck you can't really workaround with a new cpu.

The only games I would love to play with 3D Vision that I can think of now are Quantum Break and Hellblade. In Quantum Break I was getting 30fps and drops to 25, so I stopped playing. I hope that with a new CPU I could play these games at 45\60fps, but I am not really that excited to play in a TV again now that I have experienced VR.

I think bottlenecks also depend on resolution you use to play. In my case most of bottlenecks playing with 3D glasses are because of the GPU. Of course if I play 2D games it is another history. Sometimes I also use DSR to increase visual quality, if the game is old and my gpu is getting bored.

Some games are worse than others, but what really pisses me off is that in some really old games I have the same performance as new games as if like my GPU was doing its job just fine, but the CPU is limiting factor in both situations. I got really mad because Darksiders 2 DE runs badly and even Brutal Legend has fps drops. I had to play Mafia 2 with Tridef (real 3D not the fake one) coz the performance was much better than 3D Vision that I was getting drops to 30fps and below and with Tridef it would just have a few drops to 50fps. Assassins Creed 2 was also running better with tridef, so funny thing is that for some old games it seems tridef was a better option for me than 3D Vision.

Maybe it is also because of the famous "CPU bottleneck" that Nvidia has to fix some day. I am reading this thread because I would also be interested in a posible CPU upgrade (CPU + mobo + ram), but only in the case that I get a real and noticeable benefit in terms of FPS in every modern game..., but I suspect that in my case it would not happen.

Hi guys, Would anyone know if a Rysen 5 1600X with a 1070 would be good for 3D Vision gaming? I am trying to decide between an i5 8600K vs Rysen 5 1600K. The Rysen is a lot cheaper here, so I am thinking to perhaps get the Rysen, but wondering if the performance would be bad on 3D vision due to the CPU limitations of 3D Vision that we all know. I am not playing much 3D Vision games, only VR, but considering that I wont be doing any upgrades anytime soon after this, I might think about spending more just to have 3D vision working well. Anybody have any experiences with Rysen CPU and 3D Vision gaming? I could also get a i5 8400 for the same price of the Rysen, but no options to overclock in the future. Would it be fine for 3D Vision a i5 8400 stock?
Hi guys,

Would anyone know if a Rysen 5 1600X with a 1070 would be good for 3D Vision gaming?

I am trying to decide between an i5 8600K vs Rysen 5 1600K.
The Rysen is a lot cheaper here, so I am thinking to perhaps get the Rysen, but wondering if the performance would be bad on 3D vision due to the CPU limitations of 3D Vision that we all know. I am not playing much 3D Vision games, only VR, but considering that I wont be doing any upgrades anytime soon after this, I might think about spending more just to have 3D vision working well. Anybody have any experiences with Rysen CPU and 3D Vision gaming?

I could also get a i5 8400 for the same price of the Rysen, but no options to overclock in the future.

i5 8600K for 3D gaming due to 3D vision bottleneck. IPC x Clock speed is King. Make sure to also get fast memory (>3000MHz with decent CL), and OC as much as you can.
