3D Vision + GTX295 Crashing in games
Hello,

I have a problem with my computer. It started one week ago when i bought the 3D Vision set (shutter glasses and the Samsung 2233RZ). Once I play games like Dead Space or Mass Effect 2, the videocard starts making a buzzing sound (i probed with a tube and listened to each part of my computer, the sound comes definetly from the videocard) and after a variable period of time, or the computer restarts itself (direct restart, no BSOD) or the red light from the back of the video card goes red (the system still is alive inside, somewhere because for a few seconds more the game sound is still coming and has HDD activity) and only becomes green again if i press the reset button. This is the case when I have in NVIDIA Control Panel selected "Enable Stereoscopic 3D" no matter if i use it in the game or not (using the Ctrl+T shortcut). I use the "Hide Stereoscopic 3D effects when game starts" option selected so I can activate the 3D when i want.
If I deselect "Enable Stereoscopic 3D", both games run fine, and the buzzing sound is barely heardable.
I use the latest Nvidia Drivers (196.21) for both the videocard and the 3D Glasses.
My system configuration is:

CPU: i7 920 - Stock cooler
MB: Gigabye GA-EX58-DS4
PS: Recom GamingEngine 1050w
RAM: 6Gb DDR3
Vid: BFG GTX295
OS: Windows 7 64bit (fresh installed 1 day ago) - Vista 64bit before, had it when i installed the 3D Set (had the same simptoms).

The entire case is cooled with 3 RECOM coolers and nothing is overclocked. I logged all temps and voltages while playing and absolutely nothing is out of the ordinary. The voltages have a very small fluctuation, the CPU is rather cold while playing while the videocard barely reaches 86-90 degrees. For more help I attached 2 log files (I converted them in excel format to make also graphs out of the values). In both logs the end is the moment when the computer crashed.

I presume the problem is from the video card or PSU but I want to check with you also to be sure. Unfortunately i have no other video card to test nor PSU.

Thank you for your help.

Now I tested also with 3DMark Vantage in High settings and no matter with or without 3D activated in nVidia Control Pannel, the tests ran without any problems. Thinking that maybe the problem solved by itself, i jumped back in Dead Space with 3D on. I played 1 hour and half almost and the computer again restarted. I atach here the logs taken while in 3DMark Vantage both with and without 3D activated.

you have probably already done this but, have you blown out your computer with a dust can? I used to have a problem like this with my old computer. I dirty fan on a video card can cause a problem like this. Also, do you have your GTX 295 set to multi gpu in the nvidia control panel?

Yes, I just cleaned it a few days ago because I thought 90 deg. is too hot... I found out later this is rather normal. Anyway, it hardly touches 90, as u can see in the logs.
I did not touch the other settings in Control Pannel. By default PhysX and multi-GPU are enabled.
I ordered now a new PSU (Corsair CMPSU-850HX 850W) for a friend and when it arives I will use it to test my computer. This way I can rule out the PSU as the source of the failure.

Testing the psu sound's the most logical, but also remember that 90c is'nt overheating the gpu's but the cooler you can keep them the better they will perform and the longer they will last. Also their will be less heat transferred to the rest of your component's.

You are absolutely right. I will give some more speed to the coolers from the fan controller. Now i have to wait 2-3 days for the PSU to be delivered. Meanwhile I will limit myself to "monoscopic" 3D playing.

Seems the problem was from the PSU. I tested with the Corsair 850w and the restarts and red lights are gone.
