3dTV play 1080p 60hz for gaming works! solution and questions.
  1 / 3
Hi, I bought a LG 47LW450u recently, I then wanted to play my games in 3d so bought the nvidia 3dTV play software, after some playing around I found out that I'm limited to 2 modes 720p60hz or 1080p24hz both are pretty bad for a 47" tv (24fps for gaming is bad my xbox can do better at 1080p and 720p on a 47" TV scales pretty bad)

So I googled about and found the "solution" to this issue but this wasnt without its fall backs

http://3dvision-blog.com/7163-make-your-passive-3d-monitor-or-3d-hdtv-work-with-3d-vision/

By changing your monitors EDID (pc software driver based nothing happening on TV software side) you are able to get a full 1080p60hz resolution for anything you play

but here are the current issues with this

left and right eye are swapped in this mode (simple fix swap lenses in glasses)
some more visible ghosting appears
3d effect can "drop off" where you can see the 3d adjusting the effect (possibly due to it working at a higher refresh rate)

these things can be overlooked in most cases, unless you are standing still in a game the ghosting isn't really noticeable and the 3d effect drop off just takes some getting used too.

if all it takes is a simple EDID override, why doesn't nvidia support this for gaming? I have used this setup over a single HDMI 1.4a cable but the specs say there isn't enough bandwidth for it (may count for the drop off every now and again) the good thing about this "fix" is that you can also just play games at any resolution and any refreshrate, so while 1080p60hz might be pushing it a bit even playing games at 1600x900x60hz is a hell of a lot better than 1280x720x60hz. I'm sure nvidia already knows about this, so why don't they let us use it? if nvidia supported it the swap eye effect could be coded in rather than the software just being confused. and the drop off may not happen at lower than 1080p60hz modes, I haven't tested this at all.

and with that I leave you guys to feel free to test and say what you think about this.

This is not true 1080p @ 60Hz/eye, but half 1080p @ 60Hz/eye, since you use a passive TV.

This is interlaced. 1080i @ 60Hz/eye if you will

But you're right, Nvidia could support it out of the box, without EDID override. (ditto for Checkerboard.)

ZePRiNCE is right, you're not getting 1920x1080p(2 million pixels)60fps per eye as it's impossible given both the bandwidth limitations of HDMI 1.4 and the physical pixel limits of a 1080p passive display. At best the solution you found optimizes your computer's output for your TV, so that it doesn't render (or doesn't waste HDMI bandwidth outputting) the lines your TV can't display. It would be better than frame packed 1280x720p 3D on your particular display though, because your TV wouldn't need to cut it down to 1280x540p per eye then upscale it to 1920px540p per eye (plus further scaling to restore the proper aspect ratio).

yea I know my TV cant do 1080 lines per eye, but its still physically easier on the eyes. would just be nice for nvidia to enable they obviously working solutions, I found out that if i use lucid MVP game will overcome the 24 fPS limit in 1080p24hz mode for standard EDID settings, but lucid MVP doesnt work correctly for all games, like batman arkham city where the polygons are inverted and backface culled.

But it seems that people have solutions for nvidia 3dvision, yet nvidia stays put in what it offers people. starting to think that the £30 I paid for the software was a bad investment, possibly too late to get my money back as well now.

It's ridicolous that to obtain 3dVision full passive support half of the 3d users have to cheat on monitor edid. It's the demonstration of marketing interests of nvidia!
It's time to support all 3dtv/monitor adding polarized and SBS top/down support finally!

People are not so stupid..

Yah, but AMDs HD3D using TriDef offers it. Interleave at 60 per eye.

Nvidia does offer it but only with the Acer 27 inch passive monitor which it labels "Optomized for GeForce"

I've said it before, Passive 3D HDTV owners should be pissed. It's one of the reasons I returned my LG.

Prolly should have just gone with AMD. My friends are all fan boys, I'm the oddball with my Nvidia GPU.

I agree Nvidia needs to stop hyping HDMI 3D Vision.

Putting a 3DVision stamp on an HDMI only GPU is pathetic.

720P mode is not the ultimate 3D experience.

1080P@120hz mode through DVI is.

Sorry, kinda late to this discussion can't play in 24hz! i get killed sooo quick. have to explore in full res, yet change to 720p for all fights... i just wanna know if there are any way to reduce quality without having to change the res down to 720p? In order to speed up response time... i really loooove playing ME1 in full 1080p 3D on my 40 inch active 3DTV SHARP LC-40 LE 835U... I have only had luck with one option, when use the nVidia CP option - adjust image settings with a preview, and set it all the way to "performance", i get a 30% increase in 1080p response time, without having to reduce to resolution, yet the quality is visually noticeable... :( any software or special "hacks" that can help with this? aside from the EDID option??? wish Asus or Acer would just make a 40 inch 3D monitor with 60hz full HD3D with dvi-d and display port options...

I don't suppose it supports Checkerboard, check the owner's manual. What GPU and CPU are you using? Performance could be your PC and not the resolution. But yah, 24Hz sucks. How are you playing ME1 in 3D?

yah those passive EDIDs are supported with Line Interleaved. I'm pretty sure Samsung does not support Line Interleaved.
left and right eye are swapped in this mode (simple fix swap lenses in glasses)<br>
There is also the registration hack (with regedit) to swap the eyes so you can use your glasses the right way in gaming. From 3d vision blog : open regedt32.exe and find the NVidia Stereo3D settings. ON my Windows 7 64-bit machine it is at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D, I guess in 32-bit OS it is going to be at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D. Now find the keys 'InterleavePattern0' and 'InterleavePattern1', and modify their values from 0x00ff00ff to 0xff00ff00. You are not finished yet, as 'nvSCPAPISvr.exe' will overwrite these values all the time when the drivers are launched. You have to deny delete and set operations for SYSTEM to keep these values unmodified. On my Win7 it goes as follows: Right-click on the Stereo3D folder in the registry, then click the followings: Permissions..., Advanced, Add..., Advanced..., Find Now, choose 'SYSTEM' from the list, Ok, Ok, tick 'Set Value' row and 'Deny' column, tick 'Delete' row and 'Deny' column, tick 'Apply these permissions...', Ok. Now the driver will not overwrite these values. Enjoy your regular glasses. Have Fun.

yeah i do have the option of using Checkerboard, yet when i select it, it does not convert to 3D... Maybe because my display is an active 3D? Thanks for taking the time to advise me Mr. kalhohan! i will give this a try! Now this is so i can game in checkerboard right? even though i have active 3D display & glasses? I went out and bought a $80 Monster Hyper 1000 HDMI max 3D cable with an output of 21 gbps, and used a display port adapter to connect it to my Zodac GTX 660 ti AMP card, so i'm hoping with ur suggestion and the superior bandwidth, i can game at 1080p 3D in 60 fps correct? Thanks to everyone!

Have you read your owner's manual? In most cases to use checkerboard, you need to use a certain HDMI input and rename it as instructed in the manual. You might also have to change the display type in the Nvidia control panel via the drop down menu.
