I'm going to have to assume that you made a typo and meant the PG278QR There is no single GPU solution for using the Asus Strix 1080Ti that you linked with 3D Vision surround using the Asus PG278QR https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG278QR/ He would need to use SLI or choose a monitor that has both Display Port and a Dual Link DVI connection. The second option, would be limited to 1080P monitors.

You need 2 cards for 3D Surround. For 2D Surround you can use one card! DVI/DP cannot be translated to crappy HDMI. (Spec-wise and fundamentally different standards). There is a reason you needed DL-DVI in the first place;)
You need 2 cards for 3D Surround.
This is true if his friend uses that monitor with that GPU. However starting with the GTX 680, it became possible to run 3D Vision surround with an accessory display off of a single GPU. Provided that the displays would work with the available outputs. i'm just saying that it's possible to hook it up and run it. Performance is a whole 'nother story :)

@d-man what do you mean by "accessory display", can you give me an example please ? however, in his case, it's possible to do a "simple" Tri-screen with its GFX ? 2 asus connected to twice displayports, and one connected to the hdmi. Right ?

You'd have to look up the specification bandwidth cap for HDMI 1.4

You're friend could opt to go with something like the ASUS VG248QE Use Dual Link DVI for the middle and DP for the L & R displays.
i have this, but i have no use of the top screen.
Open a support ticket, perhaps you will get it working. Are you using the right outputs? Because you can not use an output if it is married to another output at the same time. Check your GPU owners manual, as well as Nvidia's configuration tool.
