Help. Which card best for stereo 3D?
Greetings,

I've not updated my system in a very long time. I've been using an ASUS Geforce 2TI v7700 and a Duron 1 GHz since about 2001. It's stereoscopic capable and I've been playing Quake3 in stereo for years with LCD shutter glasses.

The time has come to get a new system so I can start playing Doom3 and such. I want to get another stereoscopic capable card, and it seems it will have to be nVidia. I'm guessing I should get a 6600 or 6800 series card or something because my budget is a bit limited, a 7800 or something would nice instead maybe.

But I can't find any information on what cards are stereoscopic. None of the reviews I see mention it, and whenever I see the output plugs on the cards they never seem to have anything for the 3D glasses.

Could anyone tell me exactly what card or cards are stereoscopic capable and what kind of setup I will need to play Doom3 good in stereoscopic mode? If you could be specific about card names and manufacturers that would be a big help, because at the moment I'm have no luck with my internet searches at all.

I'd hate to have to go back to "flat" 3D.

After a bit of extra research, it seems ASUS and nVidia don't make cards with a built in VR port anymore. I guess it wasn't popular enough, damn.

So I'm guessing I now buy any nVidia 6800 or 7800 card and then get one of those eDimensional goggle packages and drivers and use that with it. Is that correct?

But from looking through this forum, I get the impression that Doom3 won't work properly with any of this technology anyway, and Doom3 was the only game I actually cared about.

Does anyone have a stereoscopic Doom3 system that actually works? If so, what is it?

it works, but it's buggy ... I try to run it on a 7800GS with my Eye3D 4in1 wireless shutterglasses and apparently all OpenGL based games have issues with the latest Stereo3D drivers, at least on my system that is.

as for your old glasses, you might want to check out this page
http://www.stereo3d.com/homebrew.htm
that's a collection of selfmade adapters and maybe you could soldier your own ?

and it seems this link shows to most sophisticated variant

but to be frank, it might just be easier and cheaper to grab one of these:

dunno if they delvier outside of Germany and Austira, but imho it's worth of shot

besides that, the eDimensional glasses are up to the task as well ... :)

Cheers,

Thanks, Maggi.

I'll leave the soldering to the experts, I'd certainly make a mess of it. I'll check out those other 3D glasses though.

So when you say Doom3 is buggy, I take it you mean buggy enough to make playing it in stereo a waste of time. I can handle an occasional glitchy texture, I'm used to the odd shader that malfunctions in stereo on my current archaic Quake 3 setup. But if it's constant or always crashing then there's not much point.

Does anyone have a Doom3 stereo setup they consider playable? In that it's better in stereo than not, even if there is a glitch here or there? If so, what are you using? What are the problems?

I see heavy flickering in all OGL games and D3 in particular seems to have problems with shadows and lightning on the right eye viewport ... to me it looks like a driver issue and considering how long it takes NV to release a new official set, I have hopes it'll be resolved at some point of time

here's a thread about Quake4 which is based on the D3 engine, so maybe it'll help D3 as well, but I didn't check it out for myself yet
