I'm curious about you guys who use projectors, because it sounds like it's the best form of 3D. But I've never really seen one in action and don't really know how it works.
What I'm most interested in is not so much the technical side, but simply the logistical side - I'd like to get a better sense of what your layout and experience is like. For example:
-Do you play games in a study or in your lounge room?
-Do you have a monitor hooked up as well? If so, do you just clone the monitor image, or does the projector need to have a separate picture for 3D to work?
-Do you use mouse and keyboard, or only gamepad?
-Roughly how big is the projected screen area, and how far back do you sit?
-Do you use the projector exclusively? If so, even for regular computing?
-Where is the projector attached? The ceiling? Or just on a side table?
-Were there any other idiosyncracies or surprises to your gaming experience that you weren't expecting until you got a projector?
Thanks in advance.

1. Do you play games in a study or in your lounge room?
My office / gaming room.
2. Do you have a monitor hooked up as well? If so, do you just clone the monitor image, or does the projector need to have a separate picture for 3D to work?
Yes, i havent tried cloning, even though monitor and pj both are 3d vision ready.
3. Do you use mouse and keyboard, or only gamepad?
I prefer controller but depends on a game. I have comfortable couch on that room too, but any fps game will be played using mouse and keyboard. I just move light table in front of the screen and use my office chair. Just as easy as playing on a monitor.
4. Roughly how big is the projected screen area, and how far back do you sit?
120 inches, 2.6 meters / 8.5ft wide. I sit about 3 meters / 10ft from the screen.
5. Do you use the projector exclusively? If so, even for regular computing?
Nope, just movies and games on projector.
6. Where is the projector attached? The ceiling? Or just on a side table?
Ceiling just above my desktop.
7. Were there any other idiosyncracies or surprises to your gaming experience that you weren't expecting until you got a projector?
Nope, it was easier to setup than i imagined. My biggest problem was blacking out the room. That was done with just 2 blackout curtains, so fairly easy.

Thanks for the great answers, Sammy.
I probably can't attach anything to my ceiling, as I rent. Do 3d projectors allow you to place them off to the side, say on a corner table? Without skewing the image I mean.
Also, what are the recommended projectors around these parts?

I have a sort of small theater room. Surround sound with a sofa facing the screen.
I don't have a monitor. In fact my PC has never been connected to a monitor.
I almost always use a gamepad because it's just more comfortable on the sofa. I use a wireless keyboard with a trackball when not gaming.
I have a 90" screen (high gain to boost brightness) and I sit about 2 meters, 6-7 away.
I have a laptop as well, but 90% of the time I use my PC on the projector for regular computing. Browsing, watching videos, reading e-books, etc.
My projector is on a high shelf mount. It's almost as high as if it was ceiling mounted, but without having to permanently install anything. I also rent so I don't really consider a ceiling mount an option.

You would want DLP for a 3D projector, and generally DLPs don't have lens shift that would allow you to put it in a corner. I have an Acer H5360BD, and I like it, but I think the best option now would be the Benq W1070 (or its short throw version, 1080ST). Requires 3DTV Play, should work well with Tridef with the latest firmware.

My answers would be similar to Sammy's, except I sit twice as close (5-6ft) so that the screen fills the whole frame of the glasses for max immersion. Basically feels like VR once you adjust the convergence so things become life size. Also I do clone the image and the monitor just shows the image for the left eye. And I have the projector in the adjacent room so I have to walk back to the PC to change settings and stuff and I can't use keyboard/mouse controls (but I usually don't want to anyways).
I'm using a W1080st which is probably the best thing you can get if you require short throw. I don't think projectors can be placed off to the side, but if you have short throw you can put it in front of you, unless you sit super close like me.

Appreciate the info guys.
Just looking at the benq ones now. So you need to use the benq glasses with them, right? Are they much different to 3dvision glasses?
Is there a problem with image being dim? Does lightboost work?
So I'd be using hdmi, right?
Anything i need to know about future-proofing? Will g-sync ever work with projectors? I hear more and more about displayport nowadays - is that something I need to be aware about?
Do you guys use 3dvision, Tridef (and others?) interchangeably?
Also, the 1080st seems to always project one edge of the image directly in front of it. So if I were to put it on the floor, the image would have to be on the lowest part of the wall (ie. I couldn't angle it to show halfway up the wall or even higher) . Is that right?

Any DLP link glasses will work. The Benq glasses are high quality, though expensive.
Is there a problem with image being dim? Does lightboost work?
Lightboost is an LCD monitor technology, so it doesn't apply to projectors. When I first got my Acer H5360BD 3D projector, I felt the brightness was acceptable but perhaps could be better. After a few weeks, I got a 2.5 gain screen, and it was definitely better!
So I'd be using hdmi, right?
Yes, limited to 720p 60fps 3D or bandwidth equivalent.
As far as HDMI 2.0, display port, and G-SYNC, those are all unknowns at this point. I'm hopeful, but I haven't heard anything at all in regard to projectors.

Beware, once you've played on a projector you won't be able to play again in a monitor, projectors are that good.
If you go for a 3D 1080p projector, not all DLP glasses will work, you will need specific glasses to work at 1080p, otherwise it will only work on 720p, and trust me, 1080p 3D movies look incredible.
I have a benq w1070 and 3d vision gaming works great, but Tridef doesn't look that good since it only works with 1080i. It wasn't much of an issue a few months ago, but now that Tridef seems like the best option for dx11 gaming, I suggest you look for a projector with better Tridef support, I think Acer's 3d 1080p h9500bd support is better for Tridef, but better check AVforums for more info.
By the way, yesterday I tried Trine 2 demo on PS4 in 3d and it looks great on the benq, good job, finally a great 3d game on a console.

Wait, w1070 doesnt work 1080p SBS or TB with tridef? Because i think tridef's 1080p(60hz) top bottom / SBS looks better on a 1080p projector, than 3dtv play 720p(60hz).

No, only 1080i afaik. I tried Tridef with the w1070 and it didn't work too well. I was playing Castlevania before it was completely patched and shadows rendered incorrectly, so I gave Tridef a try, and it looked awful. I don't know, maybe i didn't config it properly, though I've been using Tridef with the hmz-t1 for quite some time so I know how it works. I tried every 3d mode on the w1070 and the only one that worked looked terrible.

Someone else mentioned throw, best bet is to go to the projector central website and use the throw calculator there. This will tell you what image size will be projected from a specified distance for most models of projector.
I already have a projector and am waiting for a HDMI 2.0 device so that I can get proper 1080p 3d from the PC.
I came very close to buying an Optoma HD131xe though as I'm getting fed up of waiting!
Slightly longer throw than the BenQ and apparently slightly quieter. Lack of multiple user image modes is one issue for me though.
As has already been said, lens shift is incredibly rare on cheap DLP projectors, but do your research carefully, as I know that on some older projectors, excessive use of lens shift (and zoom) can affect the image quality in terms of geometry and brightness.
On a more positive note, DLP = No display ghosting. Plus, even 720p looks great in 3d.

This, I can't stand 3D on a TV now because of this, home proj really is the best you will see 3D in, plus you get the immersion that only a 100"+ screen can bring! :)

My setup is an Optoma HD66 - bit of an old model now, but works perfectly. I did not have to do anything to make it work except plug it in - the Nvidia driver recognized it and it started working through normal 3D Vision (not 3D TV Play). I have it screwed into the ceiling in my basement about maybe 10' from the screen, which is about 120" width. I use both keyboard and mouse (with a little table I have) or controller (only recently started using this for Lego games and X Rebirth).
It's 720p, which might sound a bit crap nowadays, but it's surprisingly good as long as you are not say on top of the screen (I am about 5-7' away depending on if I am on the couch or in my chair). I do think though that I am at the limit of my screen size for this resolution, and might benefit from it being a tad smaller. If you have a game, maybe a top down RTS or something, with lots of little objects on the screen, you probably will notice the resolution, in the same way that you notice jaggies when you don't have decent AA on - but tbh those are not really good games to use a projector with. FPS, TPS, driving, flying etc are particularly good, and even Pinball FX looks like the table is in front of you.
I think the gain on my screen is not high enough - I got a relatively low gain screen (1.0) to avoid shiny spots on the screen and because you get better/more uniform angled viewing - I also use my projector for movies for the kids etc. A higher gain screen (2.0) would improve brightness and colour levels, but for now I increase the 'digital vibrance' in the Nvidia control panel. Having the projector on the ceiling means I have to use the 'keystone' feature to square up the image, and this does lead to a small bit of image blurring that you can't quite rid of because the top and bottom of the screen are basically at quite different distances from the projector so there is no one focus point that has it all in focus. I did not have this originally when I had my projector sat on top of a small step ladder, because then the projector was midway at screen height.
Not sure what else to say - gaming on a big screen is fantastic, the sense of scale and 'being there' in some games is amazing.

I think what you're referring to here is 120hz vs 144hz. The Benq W1070 will operate at 120hz for 60fps 720p content, and 144hz for 1080p 24fps. Anyone getting that projector should specifically look for 144hz compatible DLP-link glasses.
As far as SBS on the W1070, 1080p SBS was enabled on a newer version of the firmware. Hopefully anyone buying new will have it. You can probably send in yours to Benq to update it. Or, there is info on the AVS thread on how to update it yourself, but you run the risk of bricking it if you don't follow the instructions exactly.

Nope, just movies and games on projector.

I'm using a W1080st which is probably the best thing you can get if you require short throw. I don't think projectors can be placed off to the side, but if you have short throw you can put it in front of you, unless you sit super close like me.
Lightboost is an LCD monitor technology, so it doesn't apply to projectors. When I first got my Acer H5360BD 3D projector, I felt the brightness was acceptable but perhaps could be better. After a few weeks, I got a 2.5 gain screen, and it was definitely better!
Yes, limited to 720p 60fps 3D or bandwidth equivalent.
As far as HDMI 2.0, display port, and G-SYNC, those are all unknowns at this point. I'm hopeful, but I haven't heard anything at all in regard to projectors.
