I don't think it makes a lick of difference with Rayman. Kind of like Mario games. They're both awesome. Origins will probably be cheaper (and it's DRM free on Steam), so you might want to just start there. But that's the only real reason. EDIT: The Witcher 1 is awesome with the convergence cranked up. It's also an amazing game. But the first chapter has terribly slow pacing. So a lot of people give up early. If you can get going, you'll be out of words by the end. Just amazing game. Haven't played The Witcher 2 yet, because my GPU just can't handle it in 3D. And with my backlog, I'll probably just wait till my next upgrade.

I'd really recommend starting (and finishing) with Legends. They're both great games, but Legends includes a good chunk of the content in Origins as unlockable levels, and is much better designed to boot. Not to say Origins is bad (it isn't), but you'll end up playing the best-of in Legends anyway. As for Witcher, I couldn't make it through the first one, the pacing was just far too slow for my taste, and the combat wasn't engaging enough. Plenty of people loved it though, so it's probably worth a shot. I'm planning on trying the second one at some point without having played the entirity of the first (put about 15 hours in).

The Witcher games are very much part of an established world, with their own lore and continuity. But CDP have managed quite well to make them both stand-alone. You start the Witcher 1 with amnesia, which is a handy way to let new players get to know the world without having read the dozen or so books from the preceding 15 years. You meet old friends and important figures from the books, but you meet them 'for the first' time, since you have amnesia. It's an easy way out, but it adds quite a bit of intrigue to the story since no one actually knows *why* you have amnesia. The Witcher 2 starts where #1 left off, and continues several of the relationships you formed in #1. But most of the plot and setting is pretty stand-alone. Geralt continues to not remember things from before his amnesia, though some start coming back, and the source of the amnesia itself actually gets explored, and has something to do with....things that are going to happen in Witcher 3. Overall, I'd say you don't have to play 1 first, though if you want to get the most out of the games, you probably should. Story-wise, both games are strong. The screenwriting is among the best I've ever seen in a game. You'll love being treated like an adult, and seeing characters who are actually kind of believable, rather than black and white stereotypes. Dialogue is full of fucks and cunts and cocksuckers, yet never feel gratiuitous. It just feels like the way people living in a war-torn medieval world would and should talk. I found #1 slightly deeper and more compelling, but both are great. I formed attachments to some of the characters, kind of like I did in Mass Effect. This is probably the greatest benefit of playing both in order. Witcher 1 has the infamous 'sex cards', which was a stupid bit of immature sexism in a game that otherwise treats its female characters intelligently. Thankfully, these are gone from #2. Action-wise, I found the combat in #1 more fun. Graphics-wise, #2 blows #1 (and most other games) out of the water. It looks absolutely STUNNING in 3D. It's a must-see.
Question: I see The Witcher 2 and Rayman Legends show up highly as something I've missed. Is it better to start with the first in the series Witcher 1 and Rayman Origins (or even further back)?
Rayman Legends/Origins both have demo's. They aren't terribly deep games and playing them back to back would be a mistake. Not saying they are bad, they are fun games but mechanically the same. Play demo of whichever you decide. And make the choice if you think you would like the game enough you will return to next in like 6 months at least. If not skip to legends. Witcher 1 may be considered difficult to play at medium/high depth settings. 2D mouse/ hud related. Similiar to Dragon age origins [non-patched] If you played it. Both of which I played at around 50ish% depth. I enjoyed it but alot of people have issues especially with 2D mouse. The overaching plot nor even your "romance" of Witcher 1 doesn't really have any real connection with witcher 2 nor does any real decisions outside of a casual reference. I think they really planned for Witcher 2 being much bigger then 1 so they didn't want to alienate new players. The decisions from Witcher 1 are actually extremely trivial tbh [I have two witcher 1 completions / two witcher 2's] and mostly a loot based reward. So while I am a fan of witcher and currently read 2 of the 3 books that were released in English. I think you would do fine, your more rewarded by knowing who a character is then the initial "should I know him?." Console users aren't given the option of playing Witcher 1. I believe they are given like a 2 minute cinematic which would be a good idea to look at if skipping witcher 1. I believe the game throws you a few bones with amnesia as well. To sum it up if your a hardcore RPG player who doesn't mind playing a game thats pretty old now. With 2D mouse/hud then sure. TBH, if it was me I'd probably skip just because if I felt I decided I wanted to quit Witcher 1 half way through it would be that much harder to pick up Witcher 2. Its pretty hard to stop playing a game then decide to pop in the next installment.

I'm assuming most people's lists are longer, I just took it more as "A noob just got 3D, what would you recommend as their first experiences?"

My last games I played were The Witcher and Tomb Raider Underworld. They both look incredible in 3D Vision with one exception with The Witcher, I remember fingers of the dwarfs and nymph's breasts were weird, but still it did not take away much from the 3D effects overall. I voted 60 for the Witcher and 40 for Tomb Raider Underworld. Thanks bo3b for setting up the list, helpful to collect games when they're on sale.

I played Witcher 2 before I played Witcher 1. I enjoyed W2 so much, I had to go back and do the first game as well. You won't be sorry or disappointed to play W2 first. It has a bit of a learning curve for combat, as you really need to think about how you fight, and what swords, and potions are appropriate for each battle. Anyway.. great game!

I voted. Just gave my top 5 games to play. Mass Effect 3 i just finish and found to be very good over all and i used to extended ending. Witcher 2 was lovely in 3D with a good story too. Metro 2033 is my favorite though, but just by a hair. Definitely don't miss the Dead Space series if you like that sort of thing. They are very high quality. Tomb Raider is on my to-do list, so i haven't played that yet. I assume you've played Mass Effect 1 and 2? If you haven't, i'd personally drop everything your doing and play ME1 today.

I think having it be a noob list is extremely helpful, but also for me there are a bunch I've missed over the years. I have limited play time, so when I do play I'd like to maximize the experience, pretty much like a noob. So I think it works for both. If you think it would be helpful to have a specific noob list, I can make alternate lists on different pages without any trouble.
