3DVISION, QUADRO FX and 3DSMAX 3dvision with quad buffer support - QUADRO users
Hi all,

i'm an european version owner, so no VESA sync cable inside the box (for which i'm waiting for infos from NVIDIA hardware support) but it has been told that we don't specifically need it for quad buffer support in OGL applications. (it pretends to be a more qualitative solution of course, this is why i would like to have the cable but..)

I've a QUADRO FX 3700 (supported card, standing to NVIDIA list), 3DVISION bundle (samsung 120Hz 3dready display) and i would like to enable the stereo vision in viewports.

3DSMAX 2009 64bit is running with Ogl 3.20 driver (i'm using latest quadro driver and latest 3Dvision driver at the moment, on a Windows 7 64bit system)
I've setup the stereo driver to have the stereo effect DISABLED and

Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode
Enable overlay = On
Stereo - Display mode = Generic active stereo (with NVIDIA IR Emitter)
Stereo Enable = On
Stereo - Swap eyes = Off
Triple buffering = On
*Unified back/depth buffer = On
Vertical sync = On

All these settings except the Unified back/depth buffer, which i cannot find in Nvidia control panel (where is it?)

Anyway, when i start 3dsmax the stereo vision does not come out...
any hints?

thank you in advance for any help

All these settings except the Unified back/depth buffer, which i cannot find in Nvidia control panel (where is it?)

...

here's why:

Unsupported Features
The following are features and functionality that were available in driver releases
supporting Windows XP, but are not–and will not be–available in driver releases for
Windows 7:
• High resolution scaling desktop (HRSD)
• MultiView Display Mode (for NVIDIA Quadro NVS graphics cards)
• NVKeystone
• Unified back buffer (UBB) controls
etc etc

These are the 191's release notes for Quadro driver....why did they remove the Unified Back Buffer?
That is the reason why it's not working?

Please Andrew@Nvidia, give us some hints...

Hi mork74
I have been using the 3dvision glasses connected to a usb port without problems for the last three months (no glitches). (xp quadro fx3700and fx4600)
Unified back/depth buffer = On => stereo should work without this option.
Never tried 3dmax in stereo but some years ago i used autocad in stereo, it did not start in stereo ,if i remenber well you had to open a view port and use the menus to set this view port to have a stereo display .
Maybe there is a similar procedure for 3dmax.

Regards.

p.s. be sure to use a opengl renderer and not a directx renderer.

Hi Bigben,

thank you for your feedback! I've been able to try those in Maya too, and they seem to work there, (maya got a stereo camera with preview) but with "flickering" and update problems...
The 3d vision works well when you update the viewport (playing an animation for example, or moving around with the cam) but one eye stop working when you stand still with your camera...

Yes, i'm using Ogl with 3dsmax but no 3dvision stereo effect at all.
I think the problem is what you refer, that you need a specific application-related module to render left/right eyes at the same time.

I would have found SVI 3dsmax renderer 2.2 as a plugin, but before spending other money i want to be sure to have working solution (without flickering or similar problems).
To avoid that NVIDIA suggest to use the VESA cable.

Have you tried turning these settings?

Triple buffering = OFF
Vertical sync = OFF

I'm XP-only these days (also with an FX 3700) but I use 3D Vision with the same setting you do except for these two. The other key setting - noted here - that you did not mention is "On Windows Vista/Win7 Verify that the 3D Stereoscopic Driver is turned off. " Good luck!

Hi Big Lars,

thank you for your help.
The kit is actually working for me (quad buffered), but with some problems (like refresh problems...when my camera is not moving, one of the glasses lens is not darkened, then it start refreshing again when there is some action in the viewport)
I've thought that with Vesa Sync Cable instead of USB link this would have been solved...but i cannot try since i can't find the Vesa Sync Cable anywhere, neither the components to build one on my own, and NVIDIA support is not answering.
I've ever thought that Nvidia support for QUADRO videocard was better than Geforce but no NVIDIA guy is answering and i'm a bit disappointed with that.

mork74, I've run into something similar with XP in the past. To ensure this doesn't happen, I've had to make sure that "Force stereo shuttering" is ON and that the "Buffer flipping mode" is set to "Use block transfer". You've probably discovered that when new drivers are installed, they always default to 60Hz so double check that it's at 120 Hz and set the "Preferred refresh rate" to "Highest available". In addition to those settings, for "Exported pixel types" I have "Color indexed (8bpp) and RGB555 format" selected.

I personally make these changes to the "base profile" (the top option in the Nvidia Control Panel's "Global Settings" tab) then on the "Program Settings" tab, set my application (ArcMap) to " use global setting". I had good success with Vista using only the emitter and have not needed the sync cable so hopefully you won't either.

Hi Big Lars,

thank you very much for your hints! I've tried adding your settings to the ones i have allready setup but i'm still experiencing some inconstant behaviour in Maya.
I mean...it works! I can see depth and popout objects...but when i play the animation i can notice some flickering (don't really know how to call it, it's like as one lens was not sync with the refresh).
This flickering changes if i change the playing speed/frame format of the timeline (25/50/60 fps, pal and ntsc): could the flickering be related to the fps ? If i turn the viewport in wireframe i have more fps during the play and infact everything is smoother onto 3Dvision side too...
Frequently, when i stop in the middle of the timeline, on a random frame, one lens stops working.
To turn it on again, i need to click somewhere or to move something, i think causing a redraw of the screen or moving something in the video buffer...

It's a great piece of hardware though...i would just need to let it work in the best way

A small update about 3DSMAX and 3DVISION usage: Visumotion produces a 3d camera plugin, but still not compatible with the 3DVISION kit (probably it will do it in the future, says the support)

I still don't know about SVI renderer
