Since 3D Surround only works with SLI, will a single GTX 295 suffice? I sold off one of my GTX 295's due to the lack of 3D support for Quad-SLI. Well, considering the technology hasn't been released yet, it's hard to say,...
But, the general rule of thumb is that for more than 2 Displays to function at once you would need an additional card. Since the GTX295 is not "TrueSLI" I believe you will be limited to the 2 display's. The GTX295 may be a dual GPU card, but that's where the similarities between it and a trueSLI setup stop, outwardly the GTX295 is just like any other single GPU based card, including it's connections.

From what I have read/heard, 3D surround will indeed be available on the GT200 cards.
It goes without saying that 3 displays will also be supported in an SLI enabled setup.
If Nvidia can/will resurrect their Quad SLI function before there are fully functional (performance, not CPU bottlenecked with adequate cooling and power) dual Fermis it seems that Quad SLI offering near linear performance increases for each GPU (never really achieved to date) will be needed.

At this time allot is just guesses, and speculation. Unless you get it from the horses mouth (Nvidia) then its just a guess at this point. They are giving up just enough info to get people interested prior to the actual release of the product being that the release has been pushed back from last year to the end of the first quarter of this year.
When Nvidia releases a press release or a hardware tester actually gets there hands on one then so much is left to speculation . so the best thing to do is watch and read because much is fixing to change.

Wouldn't 1 50 inch screen be better, no bezels! The volumetric nature and decent antialiasing decrease the need/benefit of super high resolutions for 3D not to mention the hardware requirements

I know you state your reasons for 1 50" screen being better, even res wise.
However, you are also locked to a 16 x 9/10 ratio
If you put the 3 displays in landscape mode you can "surround" yourself in gameage..
With 1 50" display it just sits in front of you, no peripheral vision.
To each their own I guess, but I would rather have proper surround imageing such as with sound.

I know you state your reasons for 1 50" screen being better, even res wise.
However, you are also locked to a 16 x 9/10 ratio
If you put the 3 displays in landscape mode you can "surround" yourself in gameage..
With 1 50" display it just sits in front of you, no peripheral vision.
To each their own I guess, but I would rather have proper surround imageing such as with sound.

EDIT: BTW... SLI Fermi should have NO problem pushing those pixels
