3D Gaming Questions
  2 / 4
Few more questions. I have not been able to get any games to play without using SBS. I think it may be because my TV is not detecting the 3D input so the only way to start it is to use the remote to turn on 3D but the remote only has the option to do SBS/OU. This has not been much of an issue as I am quite pleased with the visual quality in SBS mode but I can't help but feel like I am missing something. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my TV to recognize the 3D input? When using 3dmigoto SBS, does it use frame packing to send a 3840x1080 image? Also, when playing a DX9 game, is there any way to get it to do SBS mode? My understanding is that this is only available through 3dmigoto not helixmod but I have not been able to find much regarding helixmod. I am currently using the HR274H EDID override. Should I try any others? Because I am using this override, I am unable to get my TV to accept surround sound audio? Any ideas on a work around? My only idea is to use the headphone jack on the laptop to the surround receiver so I bypass the TV but as I am typing this, I am thinking that will only be stereo as well. I am running Win 10 1709. TV is HDMI 1.4. Here is the link again to what my TV manual says about 3D: https://pasteboard.co/HGVjp3S.jpg

incredibly difficult to play any game in 2D now...
This is what I fear. I am currently house sitting for my parents who have the 3D tv. I sit so close in a cockpit it's not an issue for me.

It's impossible to be specific, but I think you need to forget 3d vision, you need 3dtv play. I don't think an Override is going to benefit you in any way. Tomb raider has it's own 3d output, as do the various Trine games. They can output SBS mode natively, which your TV supports.

TV model is Samsung un65es6550f. From all of my research, it looks like my TV does not support 3D checkerboard. I think there is model above mine that has the extra 3D settings. The last thing I have not tried is using the HDMI1/DVI port. I have seen it mentioned that it is necessary to use that port to see the extra 3D options but again, think it requires the model above mine.

@xxKryptonite I own a 2 Samsung's 3DTV and I had to relabel HDMI port to HDMI/DVI to get the addition 3D settings.

So it's an 1080p active 3d TV that doesn't support 120hz input? Outside of the games we've identified which natively support 3d output, you need 3dtv play to go any further. With 3dtv play you'll get framepacked 3d in either 720p@120hz or 1080p@24hz. Actually I haven't considered what 3dmigoto does if you don't have a 3d vision emitter/pyramid or 3dtv play license. But, you still need a way to activate 3d in the Nvidia drivers as far as I'm aware. You have no chance of doing that via the 3d vision 120Hz route, so 3dtv play it is. 3D vision mode is 100-120Hz frame sequential, that's it. The only other reason to use an override is to enable 'optimised for 3d vision' mode, which is an interlaced format designed for passive 3d displays. Hopefully Dman will be along soon to correct my mistakes :-)

I am going to try to force the TV into 120hz tonight. Samsung says the TV has a "Clear Motion Rate" of 480 and I believe that means it able to 120hz although I am not sure it will accept it. As I was saying earlier, the EDID overide is great because it allows me to run DX11 games in SBS mode. However, I do not know of a way to SBS in DX9 games. As you were suggesting, I might have to settle for 720p with 3dTV Play for DX9. @zig11727 Where are you relabeling the port?

@xxKryptonite On both my Samsung 3DTV I select the input hold the enter key and menu pops up then I select edit name. I could be wrong but a clear motion rate 480 is different then a 120HZ input.

Thanks, i will have to try that. This is where I got my info in regards to the clear motion rate although it does not show the model year 2012 I would think it would still apply: https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/fake-refresh-rates-samsung-clear-motion-rate-vs-sony-motionflow-vs-lg-trumotion

Can someone confirm for me that any TV with 120hz and the nvidia emitter/glasses will work for 3D. My time with my current 3D TV has come to an end and I would like to continue playing in 3D. Here is a link to the TV: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x850d Also, to achieve the smoothest play, am I going to need to achieve 120fps? Or is 60fps enough?

Active 3D TV's can only support up 60hz on pc input this is limitation of HDMI, even if they say 120hz or 240hz. The only options You have are 3DTVplay 1080p at 24hz, 720p @ 60hz, or Checkerboard if supported by that TV. Make sure you have 3D TV play (not free) in the NVIDIA control panel selected as the Stereoscopy mode. If you don't have this option you will have to buy from NVIDIA. You can get a 14 trial from here: https://www.nvidia.com/object/3dtv-play-14day-trial.html However, I'm not sure if it can be purchased anymore.

Actually it seems that a lot of 4k HDMI 2.0 TVs support 1920x1080 @120hz input by now. Have a look at this youtube video which proves it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCGz6o_eUkU However it's rather unlikely that 3D will work on these TVs because their panels are not optimized for it. So even if a 3D Vision EDID override works you will get a lot of ghosting which makes the whole thing useless. We have a similar case for 120 hz IPS monitors. Yes indeed - you can make them work in 3D. But you will have a lot of crosstalk - so it's useless! To answer your other question: When your graphics card can maintain steady 120fps+ in 2d mode you will get the smoothest results in 3d mode (60 fps per eye). Btw about Tridef which was mentioned here: it supports frame sequential mode and 3D Vision monitors (I tested it on my 3D Vision monitor) but the performance is horrible! And it only works for a few games. The only cool thing about Tridef is the OSD overlay where you can set a few options comfortably while gaming. Sadly Nvidia hadn't integrated such a thing.

Paul, quite a few TVs officially support 120Hz input now. The Rtings site which xxKryptonite linked to above have made it part of their specific testing suite, along with pixel transition times, strobing effect/BFI etc. etc. If you look at their recent gaming TV tests, you'll see they check everyhing https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-usage/hdr-gaming https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/best/by-usage/video-gaming Read this section on the Samsung: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q6fn-q6f-q6-2018#comparison_2220 It has black frame insertion at 1080p @ 120Hz, which as far as I understand it would be very similar to how lightboost works, except I think lightboost does overdrive the panel voltage slightly as well to get some of the brightness back. You're completely right about 3d vision not working very well on unsupported displays, but I'd love to get a chance to try and there's probably a TV out there that could work reasonably well. That's why I started my topic about laptops and 3d vision.

Hi rustyk, thx for the info. Will have a closer look to this site. Only had a quick look to it earlier. Would be indeed very interesting to find out if there are TVs out there which support 3D unofficially. Do you have a 3D Vision laptop working in the meantime? Another option would be to start a buy and send back - marathon from online stores xD

Thanks for the input. I think I am going to go ahead and order the glasses/emitter to try on the TV I had linked. If it does not work then I think I will end up buying a 3D vision monitor.
