TESTED: 3D SLI vs 2D SLI performance compared
  3 / 3
My reference with apples and oranges was completely about vsync on and off. If 2D is allowed tearing then 3D need to allow tearing as well which I believed was impossible. Great work. Reproduce the test with weaker cards like my dual 580

Thanks to everybody using my assembler it warms my heart.
To have a critical piece of code that everyone can enjoy!
What more can you ask for?

Of course, the other option would be to buy one card first, then add a second after a period of time (hopefully after a price drop). For me personally, I'm actually considering selling off one of my 770s. Mostly because the only games that I've got on my list right now that would require the boost are AC4 and Witcher 2, and once I've finished them it's mostly older titles and games with lower requirements. I could then buy another in a few months for less. Now I've got a projector, I also have lower power requirements as I'm running at 720p.
@RAGEdemon: Thanks for the explanation. Intuitively, it seems to make sense that it would work that way. @Flugan: ok, I see now why you were so resolute about it, since Andrew explicitly states that vsync is forced on. I only got 3Dvision in 2013, so perhaps the vsync lock was no longer applicable by then, which would explain why I've never noticed vsync being forced on. Out of curiosity, could you point us to the "further reading" you mentioned?
It has been stated clearly by Nvidia that 3way sli with 3d vision does not uses more than 2 cards, and they still did not posted any updated driver that fixed this up to today that I know of. The reason you still see increased performance on some games is the PhysX being offloaded on the card not in use. Otherwise there should be no difference between 2way sli and 3way sli in 3dvision. I did extensive tests with PhysX enabled games such batman or metro and using the 3rd card dedicated for PhysX and 2way sli only gives better results than 3way sli in 3d vision see this thread: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/502441/3d-vision/3d-vision-3-way-sli/ and the post from Andrew@nvidia https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/491394/3d-vision/3d-vision-with-3way-sli-is-it-fixed-/post/3522012/#3522012
I'm not sure why you mention this, because I only have 2-way SLI on my system. All of the tests I did measured either single-GPU or 2-way SLI. In the single GPU tests, I assigned PhysX to the main GPU (rather than leaving it on "automatic", to ensure that only one GPU was doing any work (ie. to prevent the physX from being offloaded to my unused Titan or my 650ti).
Just to make sure people here are aware of the 3way sli with 3dvision setups in case they think about to try. I still have my 3way sli prepared for the day when Nvidia will give us a driver that will use it completely in 3dvision, hehehe.....

Just got a 2nd hand 670 ordered off eBay. Would any kind person compare SLI on and off with AC4 please? I know it doesn't have a built in benchmark but I would be happy with an approximate. It would be cool if the FPS was noted whilst in the jungle because that is where my frames plummet. Thanks! edit: Would it also be possible to be using 3Dmigoto too please? :)

With SLI 770s, I see some improvement. At a guess, I'd go from 30ish to 45ish. It's a poorly optimised game though.

Thanks! ~50% That's not too shabby. I hate how in the towns or modern day I get screen tearing, out on sea I have lovely high frames, just below 60 but in the jungle: 25FPS. Really frustrating.
Thanks!

That's a very rough estimate based on one area near the start of the game. I've not played much, so take it with a grain of salt.

Right-ee-oo How come you aren't playing it? Not really your thang? Agony! I have my 2nd card all plugged in and all looks good and ready. My SLI connector doesn't arrive until tomorrow! G'ah!!!!!

Really frustrating.
This is similar to my experience with 2x770, down to the mid-20's in the first jungle scene (though changing settings and making things look not too different I could get 45-60FPS, fyi). I did a 'test' in Havana, with most things max except soft shadows and AO off, stood still in the same place looking at lots of people walking by etc: - in 2D I got 43 FPS - in 3D I got 38 FPS (pressing Ctrl-T in game, not disabling 3D altogether) So I think there are parts of the game where the CPU must be stuffing things up - not surprising given the number of NPCs etc. Someone else posted some graphs of CPU usage and had one CPU core maxed at 100%, so I think the game engine is probably crap at multi-threading. This game still looks really good (to me) with most settings on low, but keeping world detail on medium and texture quality on high. After a while you forget the difference and it just looks good anyway. Also setting AA and AF in control panel gives better performance I find.
How come you aren't playing it?
Giant pile-o-shame :) Working through Dark Souls at the moment, Enslaved is next on the list. Haven't decided what's after that, but AC4 is a little down the list because I only recently finished AC3. It's not a reflection on the game itself though, it looks great.

It's hard to believe that they somehow managed to get multithreading so successful in Watch Dogs after it being barely existent in AC4.

Yeah, I know, but it's still the same company making it, and maybe many of the same staff, and ubisoft are known for heavily recycling their work from one game to the next. I'm not saying that Watch Dogs won't use multithreading effectively. I'm just saying that they've got a big claim to live up to. It's the first and only game I'm aware of that explicitly lists 8-core CPUs in the recommended specs.
