Considering going 3D
  1 / 2
Hey all,

I've been reading here a good bit today and am really tempted to take the plunge to PC 3D!

First off - With all the buzz and excitement of the big 3D TV launch this year, I've decided to take a look at all aspects (including the PC). I was highly interested in purchasing a 3dtv now, but I find it's best to wait till later on when there are a lot more options and availability... and pricing. The new Samsung TV's aren't getting the best reviews. With the cost obviously high and I haven't had the chance to check out what 3D looks like, I figured the PC solution may not be a bad start.

It seems like all of you are really just amazed and are loving the 3d Vision. Of course, no one quite knows what the experience will be until they take the plunge and see for themselves. We are all virgins at some point ;) But it does sound incredible from all the descriptions around here. One thing I really wanted to know though was how much is this limited to just gaming? I love games and although I'm more of a console player, I do enjoy PC gaming as well (Will probably pick up Bad Company 2 and Just Cause 2). But what other support does it really have going on for it so far? I guess it would feel a bit limited if it were only to make the games shine and say, not videos or Windows applications? Basically, have you found enough support other than just games to really enjoy your purchase in other areas?

My PC should be just fine for handling the 3D vision:
Quad Core I7 - 2.67GHz
6GB Ram
GTX 280
Windows 7 x64

I know I'll need to upgrade my monitor and will probably go with the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ.

So, how is everyone enjoying their 3D experience other than the gaming factor? (I know it discusses videos and pictures in the faqs and such, but is there a lot of content?)

Thank you all!

Hello mate!

TBH, I havent found all that much aside from the splendedly huge amount of games that have suddenly become that much more immersive. There are loads of little S3D clips and trailers about, but nothing major or of a professional quality.

But its all about the gaming for me buddy!

I am very happy with my Viewsonic monitor which I think is a little cheaper than the Sammy. Slight ghosting begins at the top sixth to seventh part of the screen becoming quite noticable at the top tenth section but thats totally cool with me.

I am loving my 3D Vision mate!

Yeah 3D is really cool, you should try it out. In terms of content its mostly games at this point. However Blu-Ray3D has just launched and will be supported. There is some sample 3D videos floating around but not enough to justify a purchase. If you like gaming then you will have a lot of fun.

I would definetly recommend it if you like games and 3d. Movies, not so much yet...
but with 3d movies hitting the bluray market and powerdvd introducing a way to watch them with 3dvision, it will open a lot of doors. 3d tech has been around a long time, and good. Now it is evolving into something great.

Hi, i was in the same situation as you, deciding wheather to splash the cash on the 3D vision setup and all i can say is "WOW".

Seriously playing Just Cause 2 in 3D, is just eye candy. the detail is amazing in 3D and with the landscape which JC2 is set in, this game is amazing in 3D

I'm using the Alienware AW2310 with the 3D vision, and so far i whink it is well worth the purchase.

But note i'm playing JC2 at 1080 res and i do get a large frame drop, game play can get abit jerky at times, but then again i have a phenom 9950 at stock.

But ur i7 should be better at 3D rendering than mine.

All i can say "ONCE YOU PLAY IN 3D YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO PLAY IN 2D AGAIN, TOO MUCH OFF A BIG DEFFERENCE"

The only problems is slight ghosting in games, but from what i've heard is that a nvidia driver fix can sort that out.

Thanks guys - for all the responses - Awesome!

It's like I said, and I'm sure you've all been through it - You never know what it's going to be like until you actually see it for yourself (those of us who only have seen 3D examples through the horrible red and blue lenses haha). But it really sounds like everyone is loving it and it would be a good idea to test it out via the PC market. It must be selling well as its a bit hard to find at the moment but I got that covered.

I'm going to take the plunge and order the monitor and the 3D kit today and in the meantime start finding some cool 3D content as examples. I wonder if they have ever considered 3D web pages ;) Isn't youtube working on a 3D service? This will be fantastic though, I'm pretty excited to see how all of this is (especially in some awesome games).

Hahaha, ohhh snap!

Well, I just ordered a 3D vision monitor and the starter kit. I expect them to get here towards the end of next week and I'm fairly excited about checking this out. I will let you guys know about it when everything gets here!

whilst i do agree 3d gaming is simply jaw dropping and creates a whole new "feel" to the game, imho i have noticed my multiplayer gaming skillz taking a big hit, as i tend to look around and take in surroundings and lose concentration on the task at hand ie fragging lol.
but is definately worth the purchase,
i have the acer h5360 and the sammy 2233rz and tend to use the sammy more for multiplayer gaming

I picked up the Sammy 2233rz as I found some good deals on it.

But that's awesome haha. It must really create a fun experience to do that! Well, I think my first games to try are Bad Company 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Just Cause 2 (do Demos work just fine? So I can grab some demo stuff).

The funny thing is that I can't even picture how it will truly look. I always have that bad old image of red and blue lenses hah! Besides the drop in frames and the darker tint from the shaded glasses, does the 3D effect rock? As in, no loss of vibrant colors, or shoddy looking stuff or just a less than stellar look compared to the regular 2d way? I have a week till this comes in and I'm excited so I might as well ask lol.

What does it look like? Have you seen a modern 3D film like Avatar, Scrooge etc? It's like that only deeper. You can set depth to 100% (I think this should be the law, you gotta do this BTW) which allows infinity, ASAIK the cinema isnt. Objects feel solid in FPS like Oblivion, Fallout 3. Being hit by rockets or arrows make you jump unlike before. Flying around GTA4's Liberty City is awesome, in fact looking down those long roads is breathtaking because they look distant.

Forget red and blue and look forward to looking through your monitor and into your game! And if you are anything like me, set asside a few days installing ALL your games, new and old, to see what they look like in stereo. :)

3d is brilliant mate, the first time i got it i loaded all my old games on and had a great blast playing through them again.

The only thing is the samsung is bad for ghosting, wont bother you at first as you will be amazed by the depth, but the response time of the monitor allows some ghosting which sort of kills immersion after a time, i am curently waiting on the new 3d tvs with faster respons times to eliminate ghosting.

You will have a lot of fun though.

Oh and before i forget, when you install the drivers first time, go to the 3d setup and show hidden controls so you can up the convegance in games, this is what makes a huge diffrence from the movies you see in cinema, adds so much depth and thickness to objects, not like the 3d cut outs of the cinema.

Have fun

Well, everything came in a bit earlier than I thought it would ............................ this is fricken amazing.

I am just amazed at how much it adds to gaming! I haven't had a ton of time to play with it all yet, but I did check out a few games and a few photo albums. Bad Company 2, Burnout Paradise, Just Cause 2, and Left 4 Dead. Astonishing to say the least.. sheesh! Even some of those photo slides on Nvidia's site are just amazing to look through. This is beautiful.

I would say that my only complaint is how, for obvious reasons, the picture is darker when S3D is in affect. I feel that takes away some of the vibrancy, but I guess there's not much you can do about that. Other than that, my eyes need to adjust lol. It can feel a bit awkward after a bit haha. I did change the depth up high at times and wow, that's such a great option. I love that Nvidia test where the logo comes out of the screen at you! Like, waaaaay out.

I wish Nvidia would would have more cool little 3D programs like that, to show off the power 3D.

Hey dsk1210? Where do I go to show hidden controls? I'm going to sound like such a n00b, but what exactly does changing the convergence do? Is that similar to changing the depth?

I can't wait to test more out, I'm guessing it takes your eyes time to adjust (especially to higher depth)? This is really something though. I hope a lot more support comes. Imagine websites done in 3D... pretty cool stuff.

You guys all rock, and all of ya were right!
