Hey, I'm new in the forum. I just downgraded to W7 Professional from W8.1, to have some chance for working fixes. I think your doing the right decision with sticking at Windows 7. I could play inquisition in 3D to some degree (depth to 1-2%, working with convergence only). But after I played a little bit Tomb Raider, I was convinced if there is a way to play a game flawlessly, its worth it. Just took me about 2-3 hours to reinstall Windows with my most important programs, spend 3 times as much to try fixes with Windows 8.1.

Plenty of people still use 8, and you can't really blame someone for buying the latest OS. But the fact is Windows 8 is going to get real irrelevant real fast. Even Microsoft have all but admitted defeat, since Windows 10 seems to be a mad scramble to placate everyone who was irritated by 8's conflicting UI philosophies by returning to a 7-style interface. It's even likely that the name "Windows 10" itself is proof of how much Microsoft wants to distance themselves from the commercial, marketing and design failure that was Windows 8. So I don't think it makes any sense to put any serious resources into a dying OS like 8, except for one-off fixes if they're easy to do. And surely Windows 10 is way too young at this stage. Who knows how the final OS will turn out, and who knows if stuff that was fine in the beta won't suddenly break in the commercial release (or, say, in 10.1 a few months after)

In general, it's my impression from forum posts that 8.1 is not as smooth in 3D. @Volnaiskra: I agree that 8 is probably going to be out of favor sooner than either 8.1 or Win7. I also agree that it will be hard to tell the status of Win10 until it's out for at least 6 months. My real concern there is whether they fixed or did anything to resolve the DXGI problems they introduced in 8.1. My best prediction is that they will not, because of their new focus on mobile everything. Microsoft has a long history of ignoring complaints and ignoring their users. Their actions will determine whether they actually care about desktop, or whether it's the usual marketing bullshit.

Performance in 3d vs windows 7 and 8.1 is exactly the same and I would possibly give a slight edge to 8.1 but then again it could be placebo effect. The only reason I installed 7 again is because people said PhysX works better and 3d which I have found both not to be true. Im going to get rid of windows 7 of my ssd. Not sure whether to turn it into a drive for more games or put a copy of windows 10 on there to test out when it comes along. At first I really hated 8.1 and had problems with device drivers and all sorts to the point I reverted back to windows 7 a few times. But in the last year or more those issues are long gone. Funny thing is I don't know if I like windows 10 how they mix the metro UI with the start menu, I don't think that's going to work at all. Time will tell tho if windows 10 is any good. There is nothing screaming out to me to get it and from what I have seen of it I will be surprised if its any good. I hope I am wrong tho.

I am using Win7 x64 and plan on continuing using it until something "fundamental" forces me to upgrade to Windows 10 (like in case the majority of future D3D games switching to DX12 and Microsoft not offering a DX12 upgrade for Win7 x64).

I don't think 8.1 will be around for much longer. At least not in desktop-centric gaming PCs, anyway. Who knows what Windows 10 will really be. From where I stand, Microsoft's actions of the past few years resemble the erratic flailing of a wounded octopus. Who knows what path they finally settle on when the dust settles. I think Microsoft's problem is that they still behave like a monopolistic titan, despite not actually being one anymore. The one-OS-to-rule-them-all attitude of Windows 8 seemed to come more from ideology than pragmatism. Windows used to power 90% of the world's computers for 30 years, so now that computers have greatly diversified into smartphones and tablets, they just need to shoehorn Windows into those smartphones and tablets and just keep pretending like it's the good old days, right? Google is famous for throwing heaps of stuff at the wall to see what sticks. For every failure, there's a thriving success story. Microsoft seems to be trying the same approach, only everything that hits the wall just keeps sliding down to the floor, only to be picked up and thrown again, with a little more panic each time around. There surely must come a day when Microsoft admits to itself that the mobile war is lost, and that they'd better start doing one thing well rather than many things badly. Maybe that day will come with Windows 10, but maybe it's still many years away.

I personally prefer Win 8.1 over Win 7 for daily use. I like the syncing with my Surface Pro 2 and I like the enhancements to the File Explorer and the "flatter" interface. I am not a fan of the Metro apps but don't really need to use them. I am indifferent about the new Start screen. But, I have noticed a number of 3D Vision problems with Win 8.1. There was a long standing issue with several games in 3D Vision with Win 8.1 and SLI (Tomb Raider for example) which NVIDIA finally fixed after many months. I have finally broken down and setup a dual boot of Win 7 for 3D Vision gaming when games require it (such as DA Inquisition). I will still try them first on Win 8.1 but will revert to Win 7 as needed. I definitely recommend the development stay focused on Win 7 because as many have pointed out there is a limited pool of people doing the hard work to get games working. I am one of the "grabbers" unfortunately because I really don't have the free time to figure out how to fix games. I may try again in the future, but the last time I started reviewing some of the guides put up I got lost quickly. I was fortunate enough though to get in a donation to support the helixmod site before that was stopped. I fully understand why those that put effort into this don't want to monetize their work but I was more than willing to contribute to help keep the helixmod site up and running for the long haul. I have contemplated giving up 3D Vision as it can be so frustrating, but then when it gets fixed to work well with games like Alien Isolation I remember why I loved it in the first place. I am saddened by what appears to be NVIDIA's abandonment of it. For 1080p I could have been very good with one 780Ti but I bought a pair to ensure good gaming in 3D Vision. I bought them not long after release so it was a hefty investment in the technology. Hopefully it was not a waste in the long run. Well, I did not mean for this post to get so long, but I wanted to share my thoughts as a loyal fan of the many 3D Vision fixes and give my perspective as a fan of Win 8.1 but also supporter of the focus on Win 7.

Wow, time flies! Can't believe this was back in January. I wanted to revive this thread, because we have a whole bunch of new people joining us in 3D, and who don't have years of experience with it. Now that every thread is degenerating into a "does this run on Win10" it seemed worth recalling. My conclusion still stands- if you care more about gaming in 3D, and don't enjoy debugging odd setup problems, you are still better suited to use Win7. Please don't get me wrong, if you personally think Win10 is the way to go, you should do whatever you like. My sole goal is to avoid wasting time, especially shaderhacker time, as time is always the most scarce resource. I would very much hate to see people waste time on workarounds when we know that 2 months from now it'll all be smoothed out. You may just genuinely enjoy futzing with computers and the whole workaround/debug puzzles. I sometimes do, and still recognize it's not a great use of time. I put Win10 on a non-essential machine to see if there is anything compelling there. If you personally care more about Win10 than 3D, that is clearly your choice. Please do let us know what you find out, it will help us all. Now that Win10 has actually arrived, we can see that it hasn't exactly been a flawless launch, but it also hasn't been terrible either. Some people are reporting that current fixes are still running in Win10, after you get past the driver gotchas. Most of our fixes still seem to be functional, as long as you don't have 980ti, and are thus sort-of-stuck on the latest driver which switches to WDDM 2.0, and breaks 3D completely. My 2c- don't just fall for the latest shiny. Make it a conscious choice as to what is most important to you.

Times moves forward.. as OSs Windows will never turn back, next year, mostly pc´s will run on w10 like it or not, i think support & new software will be designed in that phylosophy, (in w10 OS) I agree with people scared about using in this early state, but i think the new efforts must be in the new OS also, to no waste them... (As always, sorry my poor english) P.D- in the pool header question i can not choose the w10 64 option, cause is not present there but in the post tittle is.

As near as I can tell Win10 has the same faults as both Win8.1 and Win7, poor and inconsistent UI. I don't see anything compelling about Win10 so far, just a new shiny coat of paint on the same old cruft. Tell me what you are seeing that is so compelling? Merely because it's new does not actually mean it's progress. Don't fall for marketing and 'new'. Decide for yourself what is best, don't let corporations rule your choices. It's a bit of a miracle that the poll came back- it's been dead for almost a year now. I tried to edit the poll, but there is apparently no way to do that. Win7 will be functional until at least 2020. I can promise that the 3D experience is more reliable in Win7 at present. The real question is what is best for each person, their personal choice.

It´s really simple. Stick to win7 untill there is major benefits in effiency and rendering power wise to be achieved in windows10. Only thing im kind of wanting to see from windows 10 is the advertised more horsepowers and using different gpu´s to produce more power (still wonder how it´s gonna work with let´s say 1 ati and 1 nvidia card :D) but anyways. i have a great hx series power 750w, just gave up my gtx660ti SLI setup to my brother and bought a refernce 980ti. I was gonna go the 970 SLI way but as all of you know how tricky the sli can be, i decided to go that way, atleast for year or so untill another 980ti to add. But it has not been any easier with 980ti.... to the point with DX12 i could buy another card that is not too power hoggy to fit into my current rig without upgrading my quality power. but if i would buy another 980ti it would propably eatup my power and force me to upgrade that. And 3d is a hassle all the time. but when it work´s it´s totally worth it. So i have been thinking also about dual boot. just because it´s really frustrating to have all you everyday and other software in the same installation as the gaming platform. it would be just hell of a lot easier to clean out an os just for gaming. eather with restore point or total clean by formatting. IT´s hell to transfer all programs, serials, documents ect. to safe during full cleansing. And by dualbootting i would get the new features and look of windows 10 for everyday use. I would only need one new windows 7 key for the gaming os and some extra Gigabyter from HDD. about win10´s better features... the search is better ;) ..don´t really know. it´s what my friend told me.i think it looks better. It´s propably the promised upgrades that compelles us upgrade...The need to change. you get bored with things and then you believe the hype. It´s like the biggest joke. When ever you see a text saying "this is not a final product" or "this does not represent the final pruduct" ... you know it.... yes this is the shit, it´s gonna run as cappy as it´s running now and possibly looking ever crappier. When ever you see thing like that, it´s gonna make you laugh out loud. So Stick with win7 untill windows 10 delivers more GPU options and real proven processing benefits. By the way, i think many people would be willing to pay something from hard work done by you guys who make it possible to all of us "abusers". Im bussy with work as an enterpreneur so i don´t have time to fix games, as i have already little time to play them. But i would gladly pay 20 dollars for a fix to a game i like to play in 3D.

to my brother and bought a refernce 980ti. I was gonna go the 970 SLI way but as all of you know how
tricky the sli can be, i decided to go that way, atleast for year or so untill another 980ti to add.
But it has not been any easier with 980ti.... to the point with DX12 i could buy another card that
is not too power hoggy to fit into my current rig without upgrading my quality power. but if i would
buy another 980ti it would propably eatup my power and force me to upgrade that.

And 3d is a hassle all the time. but when it work´s it´s totally worth it.
So i have been thinking also about dual boot. just because it´s really frustrating to have all you everyday
and other software in the same installation as the gaming platform. it would be just hell of a lot easier to
clean out an os just for gaming. eather with restore point or total clean by formatting. IT´s hell to transfer
all programs, serials, documents ect. to safe during full cleansing. And by dualbootting i would get the
new features and look of windows 10 for everyday use. I would only need one new windows 7 key for the gaming
os and some extra Gigabyter from HDD.
about win10´s better features... the search is better ;) ..don´t really know. it´s what my friend told
me.i think it looks better. It´s propably the promised upgrades that compelles us upgrade...The need to change.
you get bored with things and then you believe the hype.

It´s like the biggest joke. When ever you see a text saying "this is not a final product" or "this
does not represent the final pruduct" ... you know it.... yes this is the shit, it´s gonna
run as cappy as it´s running now and possibly looking ever crappier.

When ever you see thing like that, it´s gonna make you laugh out loud.

So Stick with win7 untill windows 10 delivers more GPU options and real proven processing benefits.

By the way, i think many people would be willing to pay something from hard work done by you guys who make it
possible to all of us "abusers". Im bussy with work as an enterpreneur so i don´t have time to fix games,
as i have already little time to play them. But i would gladly pay 20 dollars for a fix to a game i like
to play in 3D.
Most of our fixes still seem to be functional, as long as you don't have 980ti, and are thus sort-of-stuck on the latest driver which switches to WDDM 2.0, and breaks 3D completely.
353.62 breaks 3D under W10?
