Divinity: Original Sin

Anyone get this yet? Early access is out on Steam. Apparently it uses the same engine as Dragon Commander but who knows if the 3D Vision patch that mike_ar69 made for that game will work on this one. The gameplay looks fun but I really only want to buy it if the 3D is good.

Looks like a totally different game to Dragon Commander, odds of Mike's patch fixing it are slim, though if it's the same engine it may improve things a little. If you want to test it, I can gift it to you for $20.

I just read that it is the same *engine* as Dragon Commander http://www.divinityoriginalsin.com/faq.php so odds are good that (a) it will look like crap out the box (b) it can be fixed. Looks like a fun game though, even it is a bit old school for me.

Its still alpha though. Fixing it now means stuff breaking/shaders changing. Especially since keywords being "..that certain features are missing." I don't really like this whole "early access" tbh. If its a developer you know and love. Sure, why not... I still wouldn't play it till release. Your playing a flawed game... not to mention gambling. ------------- Also, I'd watch ebay. Kickstarter pledges could get 2 keys and well shit happens for someone that planned to play with someone.

I have to agree, I tend to stay away from early access.

One thing that is nice about the early access though- if you really like a game or the developer, get in there and raise a ruckus if it's not in 3D. Early on it's more likely they'll accept it, and are going to listen to early adopters better. This is a good example- you could point them to mike_ar69's fix for the prior game, and point out that if could be fixed afterwards, it'd be even better to fix it before. And show them screenshots of stuff they've never even seen.

I completely agree with bo3d, I think that early access is a great way to create awareness for 3d at the beginning of the development. Right now even graphics engine features are not set in stone, however 6 months before shipping they are not going to revamp the code.

Like bo3b and birthright, I think there is value in trying to fix things this early to get the developers attention so they can see what is possible with a (relatively) small amount of effort (compared to their overall development effort). If this game was $20 I'd get it and have a go because being the same engine as DDC there must be some re-usable approaches/techniques (it does not matter if the shaders are different, or different CRCs, the patterns will be the same), but at $40 that's a bit steep. I am spoiled by all the Steam sales and the great deals that come with waiting...

Went ahead and bought it. Will try it out after it finishes downloading and report back my initial impressions on it.

OK, someone was very kind to gift me a copy of this - you know who you are, thank you - and I am pleased to say the Divinity Drgaon Commander fix does apply. It's all different CRCs of course so I am having to do it again, but there aren't many issues with it to be honest. I've fixed all the haloing issues in the game setup screen and all the shadows in the main game. I'll need to play a bit to actually check if there are other special effects and so on. Even the water renders fine to start with. The major issues with the fix though is that it is like DDC and writes the installation directory to the shader files, so the CRCs are different if you install it somewhere else to me. I wrote a script to convert shaders for DDC, but I am not sure how successful that was (it always worked for me. If anyone has bought this game and wants to play in 3D (because it is miles better than 2D), let me know and I'll work with you to get the install working.

An early WIP: https://s3.amazonaws.com/Mike_Ar69/HelixModInstall.zip To install, follow the instructions on the Divinity Dragon Commander page on the helixblog. You may have trouble with this, a few people have. I've barely played more than 10 minutes of the game, so expect issues, but I can only see a few things wrong at the moment - I even fixed the black border stuff and made that proper depth. As is also my 'way' now, I fixed some shaders expecting them to sort problems out that I have not yet encountered, in this case fog. The game seems to use some cheap tricks - some rocks on the beach at the beginning are just 2D painted on for example. If they improve this with 3d models later, that might require extra fixes.

Edit: I've tried your current fix (the one from Dragon commander), and while it seems to work for some shaders (some lightings as far as I can see), shadows are broken as well as some other lighting effects (just tested the tutorial dungeon). Maybe I've done something wrong with the installation process of the fix, but since some shaders seem fixed when I use your generated d3d9.dll, I think I've made a proper install. Thx in advance for your help Mike!
