Netflix in 3D? Subtle, but it's there.
I don't know too much about the technical aspects, but when I go to watch a Netflix Instant movie, their player kicks on the 3D System, glasses, screen and all. I thought that maybe this was odd, right up until I saw the announcement from them saying that 3D streaming would come to the Nintendo 3DS. Which begs the question, are they planning on releasing 3D Streaming on PCs with 3D Vision that's yet unannounced, or is this just a technical glitch with Silverlight on their end (A setting activated by accident or similar)?

I hate to bump my own topics, especially 3.5 months after the fact, but have there been any releases about this? Or is Mum the word, due to NDA's, etc.?

dude, i've been wishing for this to happen for a while now. Netflix uses silverlight, which is what 3d vision uses. So it's entirely possible. But, I'm sure they'd have a lot of legal mumbo jumbo before 3d matereial starts showing up for streaming. Also 3dtv's need to be more common place before Netflix probably even thinks about it.

Depends on how they are doing this movie streaming stuff. If they've got standard AVI format movies they are showing it shouldn't be that hard. If not, then they'll have to either make a converter from their format or make their own player. That would require a good sized population of 3D users.

I'm betting its more a problem of support, though. Once you put something like that out there, you've got tons of people calling in asking why their setup isn't working right. Given how many formats of 3D there are out there, it's going to be hard to help them. (Of course, you could just say that it is 'in beta' until the industry finally decides on a format. Let's see... how long did that HD DVD vs BluRay fight last?)

I would think, that if Netflix were to start streaming 3d vid, they'd do it in a standard format compatible with ALL tv's. Most likely framepacking mode. Which is fine for movies. That way any tv recieving a signal would switch to 3d automatically. Therefore, Netflix would really have to do nothing, except provide the movie. I think THATs what we're waiting for. Of course since 3d vision virtually supports everything, we'd be included. Time will tell.
