Weird problem VG278HE monitor
hey guys, I just recently have had a problem with my monitor, it keeps changing the picture mode by itself randomly. Any clues?

Just to clarify, do you mean the input setting changing from DVI to VGA, etc.? Or do you mean the picture mode changing from cinema, to gaming, to landscape, etc.? I had a similar problem with my VG236H once upon a time. I woke up one morning to find that the monitor screen wouldn't come on for anything. I sent it to ASUS, who supposedly repaired it under warranty, but when I hooked it up again, the same problem. I sent it back a second time, and they informed me that they couldn't find a problem, and suggested that the button to select the input had been grazed and wasn't set on the right input. - This was BS in my opinion - I'm not an idiot that isn't aware of input selecting. Nonetheless, they returned the monitor to me again, and it worked. BUT, shortly thereafter, it wigged out and started changing the input mode randomly by itself. This only happened once, and by pressing the input button, I was able to stop it, and it has behaved itself ever since. ... So, I dunno if that's the same problem you had, but that's my story LOL.

Hmmm... I haven't experienced that with the VG278HE. At least I don't think I have. Is it changing right before your eyes, or is it tied in with booting the PC? I seem to recall having an issue with the monitor changing to the default picture mode every time I rebooted, but it's been awhile... my memory is fuzzy. I remember eventually calibrating the colors the best I could on the default setting and leaving the picture mode alone. I have no idea why the picture mode would be tied in with the PC, but I think it had something to do with the NVidia display drivers. - Again, my memory is fuzzy on that.

Sounds like the button is a bit faulty. Try wiggling it around, blowing into it, etc. There may have been something that got stuck under it.

Ya the button seems broken, ive tried pressing it and it does nothing , but randomly will change the pic mode by itself, if I turn the monitor off and back on it will stop for a little while but then start again.

Yeah, PBGuy and your mention of the button not working is the root of your issue, if you have ever had similar electronic items taken apart those 'buttons' couldn't be made any cheaper. Many of them have a similar structure to the individual pieces you need to remove to build a model car/plane tank etc.. If one of those little plastic 'guides' if you will, snap from the button, then the very next time you push it may cause the broken piece(s)to lodge just right depressing that plastic/metallic membrane to a near 'always on' position. At this point the littlest thing (such as temp fluctuations, a tiny bump or nudge, or even static electricity.. you get the point) can complete the circuit enough to make you believe that either you have some resident ghost messing with you or even a gremlin or 2 with a time-share just inside the structure of your display. Anyway, if indeed what I said is the case, (and you have ruled out Poltergeists and Gremlins) the button itself would fall back to it's proper position making it appear to be ok, but really it's only the small cut-out in the frame that prevents the button from falling right out like the tooth of a boxer that just got KO'ed. Pushing the button should feel sloppy (sorry, no analogies here, my mind can't find it's way out of the gutter) and pushing could even further impregnate the little pieces making an abortion of the now malformed button and pieces a necessity. -- (EDIT: Doh!) As to what you can do, if this is the case, and it's NOT under warranty, how are you with tools and disassembly? You can take the display apart, inspect the area in question, remove any bits & the button itself (if it is indeed broken in a way that requires replacement) Before you put it back together, make sure you can change the modes physically, leave it where you like it and don't touch it. If you NEED to, you can grab a pencil with eraser, or, if that's too big a q-tip and push the button that way, as long as it's not metallic or anything else that can cause a short. You can order the button, or not, but seeing as how this is all conjecture at this point, I will stop here. Good Luck! ~Nutz
