[Rumor] Some guy reckons he has nVidia with FreeSync on current hardware
Apparently, his "hacked" drivers enable freesync on all devices from DisplayPort 1.2 2010 onwards. All cards compatible from G6xx to G9xx including mobile versions. Caution advised as it's quite hard to believe.
I haven't tried this as i don't have DP, but please be my guest...

Genlock, Frame lock, G-Sync and Quadro Sync have been available for quite awhile on the Quadro side.
The thing is, it required additional hardware but AFAIK, it's for multiple displays and/or multiple stream applications.
It was my assumption that these features were used for commercial video wall applications and also by video editors using SDI/SDTI connections, but I never really read up on it.

Vertical blanking pulses have been used for years to control screen tearing, it's nothing new. But it was never implemented well. Adaptive V-Sync was an improvement but it still wasn't great.
So a hardware solution just seems reasonable, but why not HDMI and DVI?

This has been proven to be false.
It will allow you to enable G-sync, but it has no effect on actual frame delivery or display on your screen.
It's basically a driver hack that says "let me turn on Gsync even if my screen isn't compatible" and doesn't actually work like Gsync.
It's pretty messed up that Nvidia is even blocking a standard that's been adapted by VESA. I understand the origin of it, and why they're doing it, but if G-Sync is worth this great premium, why are they afraid to support alternative standard? If G-Sync is actually superior, people would still pay extra for G-Sync equipped monitors.
If the HDTV's ever start supporting this format, Nvidia's going to be backing a real loser if they continue to lock alternatives out of their GPUs.

The DisplayPort protocol is packet based, more like networking, and thus does not require old school timing signals.
HDMI and DVI are both timing based signals, so you can't hold off vsync in any sensible way. I don't think g-sync or adaptive sync will ever come to HDMI.
