I was about to buy an 8800 to support my first stereo rig but to be honest.
But I'm tempted to buy another older card from nvidia and then wait until ATI open sources there drivers in the next few years :) then move over to ATI where developers will be able to patch the drivers for better performance with stereo games. I'm really pumped about ATI open sourcing there stuff.
I think it will take ATI some time to open source there drivers because people will realize that the FireGL cards and normal ATI cards use the same chips and it will cause them issues ;)... But regardless when they can change the hard ware sufficiently that coders can't circumvent there protection. We will all benefit.
Anyways who knows what will happen.
