Optoma HD66 3D Projector now on sale $699

It doesn't appear that Nvidia has certified it yet but it is 3D capable and has a killer price tag.

At a glance the specs look similar to the Acer H5360 but with slightly better contrast. I hope Nvidia certifies this as this will likely be my next purchase.

My understanding is that this should be a HD65 with some updates. Not sure why it wouldn't be Nvidia certified at launch considering that HD65 has been out for a while. Is Nvidia playing hardball on licensing now? Not excited about investing in a product not Nvidia certified after the latest driver debacle where we lost Generic DLP compatiblity.

Sweet! Any of you game on a large 720p screen? I know people say projectors don't need as many pixels but I keep thinking I should wait until I can afford a 1080p projector.

Probably would depend on your throw distance. I bought a 74" screen and it looks the same with 1080p and 720p. (Borrowed projector from work).

I don't see a 3d stereo port on the back. Is it necessary?

i HAVE THE VIEWSONIC 6211 ON A 8fTX8FT SCREEN AND WHEN YOUR DOING Cod 2 eveything is life size! and I wouldn't wait till 1080 p comes out 720 is pertty good from what ive seen with Home theater@720p plus the image is doulbled in 3d any ways, even though my V6211 is only 1024x768 its good and far more depth than with the Sammy2233rz, I will probably go with the Optoma when it comes out 4000 to1 contrast ratio from what I remember and sell the Viewsonic. I have a ep 739 and bought the HD200X for home use so im a litle partial to Optoma.
my 2 cents worth.

No 3D Vision certification keeps me away. NVidia seems to be doing some weird crap with those last two drivers. Can't really predict what they are doing or if it's just a bug. Either way...not fixed yet.

Bought HD 66 from Amazon today. 3D vision will not recognize the projector. Tried HDMI cable lengths from 3' to 35' with no luck. I have a Viewsonic PJD 6220-3D which 3D Vision recognizes at 1024x768 via 35'VGA cable. 3D Vision will not recognize Optoma HD66 at any resolution up to 1280x720 its stated max resolution for 3D (120hz). Instruction book says 3D ready and menue has a 3D on-off option. I will talk to Optoma tech support tomorrow. I guess I jumped the gun. I can see that the Optoma has better brightness and contrast than the Viewsonic but it will go back to Amazon if we cannot solve this problem within 30 days. Nividia did not have a clue when it came to solving the non recognition problem I had with the Viewsonic 6 months ago. I solved it by changing the VGA cable. I see they have now upgraded their 3DVision driver to better recognize the Viewsonic. I do not have much hope they will fix what appears to be another driver problem soon. Very disapointing.

Try new beta drivers. Plus there should VESA cable be used with DLPs.

Not sure for games but for BluRay a high quality 720p can kick the crap out of any 1080p cheapo.
I have an infocus 7210 720p and the razor sharp images it throws plus overall image quality is off the scale.
Remember that just as with cameras, the lens plays a HUGE role on the quality you get and a high quality lens is not cheap.
The H65, if this is what this is based on, is an entry level projector but for gaming it should work great indeed.
I am tempted now lol

Hey guys, I was able to get an HD66 half price with credit card points and it just got here yesterday so here's the deal.

The projector itself is very nice. Bright, hardly ever noticeable rainbow effect. The nvidia drivers, however, are terrible.

First of all it has the same detection problems everyones having with their samsung DLPs so you're stuck on 1.15 till they get that fixed.

Second, since nvidia no longer lets you adjust sync for some stupid reason, you have to wear the glasses upside down like some other projectors. Once you do, it does look really good though, there is some very slight green ghosting around some lights and such but overall the 3d effect is pretty amazing. I just wish I could adjust the sync so I could wear the glasses properly.

The projector runs in generic CRT mode at 1280x720 120hz over HDMI so it's basically just like using a 120hz monitor.

I think it should support checkerboard but I couldn't get that to work. The 3d vision drivers would keep telling me the sync cable wasn't connected or 3d was off on the project but neither was true. I think if I could get this working the glasses would sync properly but obviously at the cost of resolution. Again I don't understand why we can't just adjust the sync.

So the projector is very nice and will give you a nice 3d effect if you're willing to wear the glasses upside down. But nvidia can't get their latest drivers working and won't let you adjust sync.

For the price I paid I'm happy but if you have a choice between this and the Acer I'd go with the Acer since I'm pretty sure they're basically the same projector but that one will play nicer with the drivers. It's unfortunate too, the projector itself is perfect the only issues I have could be easily fixed with better drivers /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

There is no switch on the DLP itself? The Viewsonic - way down on the bottom of the On screen menu , almost hidden has a sync switch ,I would think optoma has one.

Well this news is unfortunate. It's exactly why I didn't pull the trigger. Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully nVidia officially supports this pj soon and gets crap working right. once again... *sigh*
