Steam update breaks HelixMod on some games

FEAR2 crash at Launch. Admin mode did not help. I was confused on which client I had running. So they did roll out that crasher to the main client. If you can avoid the Steam update, you will probably want to.

That's weird, I ran The Witcher with no problems using the link by Pirateguybrush As far as those exe files, I do not think they are what you are calling cracked. Perhaps people can use them for that purpose, I only tried a few. For one I had to install Punkbuster another made me install Origin and re-enter my key. Anyhow, if TriDef can not find a game, they have ways to add it now. It's not nearly as buggy as it was a few years ago. So no need for workaround launch options.
That's weird, I ran The Witcher with no problems using the link by Pirateguybrush

You can avoid the crashes by renaming the overlay dll here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\GameOverlayRenderer.dll When I rename or delete it, I can launch Witcher and Fear2 with Helix mod. It always gets updated whenver you quit the client, but allows deletion when Steam is open.

When you run Viking, or I should say after you quit playing Viking do you get multiple play/config popups afterwards? I was messing around trying to get the UAC/VC to stop popping up every time I launched the game and somehow fixed that too, think it was after I deleted the 'external' folder(although I restored it afterwards but the multiple play/configs popups stopped) The UAC/VC were a bit trickier, long story short I finally got it to stop by making a blank 'runasadmin.vdf' and setting it as read-only.

Nice find, that fixed things for me too. Kind of a massive pain that an unknown number of games are now broken without screwing with Steam files after every restart though.

I've been working on an executable version of DepthHackEngine, one that basically replaces the game's exe and when steam runs it it runs the depth hack, swaps itself out for the real exe and starts it, when it's done it swaps back. There's more to it but anyway, I was going to post it today but after testing it out on my (much faster)3D rig last night I have to make some tweaks to it and possibly some exceptions for certain games ... most run perfectly fine, some games it starts the game too quickly(?) after the DepthHack(have to Alt+Tab to see the change) and I have to figure out something for uPlay games, Steam runs the exe and then uPlay starts and then it wants to run the exe but it 'looks like' it's already running ... hate double-DRM! Anyway my point is that I could make a front end in the same manner that'd rename the overlay dll, run the game and when you quit it'd restore everything, most of the work is already done. The only real issue with it is that it takes the place of the game's exe so if the game's updated it needs to be reinstalled again(drag and drop the game's exe onto it). When Steam runs it, it does what it has to and moves itself out of the folder to a temp directory and runs the game so it shouldn't be detected by anything ... the only thing left in the directory is an ini file, which I could move also. I tried deleting "external" folder and I'm already running the game as admin, but no luck.

Yes, I have the multiple popups problem after exiting the game. I tried deleting "external" folder and I'm already running the game as admin, but no luck.

Odd, mine's back to doing it again ... I tried everything I could think of that I did before but nothing's working ... figures. So annoying ...

Is there a list of games this affects? Well a list of games that don't like overlays? I have Viking and the front end I'm working on works like a charm with it ... I'd like to not only make this stand-alone version but also implement it into the exe version of DepthHackEngine, so if the exe = 'viking' it'll know to not only apply the depth hack but also disable the overlay. I was trying to see if this would work with Origin also, I know their updated overlay broke Dead Space*, but I can't sign in, this always happens ... 'remember me' stops working, I can't log in with what I thought was my password, and 'reset password' doesn't send me an email anytime soon ... It's looking really good so far, just tested the latest build with Dead Space(Origin) and Viking(Steam) both overlays disable nicely. I wasn't exactly sure what to do about the install location, so I have it check if it's in the default install location(1st Steam then Origin) and then it applies the appropriate 'fix' and if that fails(because the game is installed in another directory) it checks if Steam and or Origin is running and applies either or both 'fixes' ... now if Steam/Origin is installed in a different location, I'll have to come up with something else for that ... most likely an ini to store the settings in.

Known games broken by Steam update: The Witcher FEAR2 Mass Effect 1 Viking Battle for Asgard Dead Space 2 I tested a few others, so it's not every game, but more than there should be. I also put in a Steam Ticket for this, but of course I doubt they pay any attention at all.

Stumbling on this thread was a happy accident. I've been having this issue since the last steam update but could not resolve it. I was starting to think It was my graphics card as I have 2x480gtx and one of them died on me just the day before I had this problem. I am back up and gaming again in 3d now. thank you so much for the fix renaming the dll works like a charm :D
