The 3D isn't real good with this one. It's nice to have on the strategic map for seeing star distances. The tactical system looks excellent (screen 1 and screen 2) but you don't just select an enemy ship to attack - you can actually pick out turrets on the enemy ships and your ships will attack that exact spot. Very cool but, with a 2D pointer, damn near impossible with 3D on.
The game itself is a very good one. Lots and LOTS of technologies to research, the different races provide very different ways to move around, the strategic map is really 3D, and so on and so forth. I've enjoyed it quite a bit.
The reason it's cheap right now is that Sword of the Stars 2 is coming out in a day or two. According to Steam and Impulse, it actually requires DirectX 10. Strange to have a 4X game pushing requirements like that! I've got it on pre-order so I'll give a quick run-down of how well it works in 3D when I get my hands on it.

Thank you very much Zloth. That was really helpful. Yeah, some games do have odd requirement but I think it is great. The textures and 3D look amazing in strategy Civ 5. Civ 5 doesnt need to be 3D but I think it is all the better for it.
Really don't know what to do about Swords 1. If only money wasn't so damn tight - grrrrrr!

Well, you can try for a free one if you want. They've got a little review, too.
Sword of the Stars 2 release has been a fiasco. Somehow Steam ended up with a months-old version of the game. In order to play you have to link up with Steam so, even if you have the right version, Steam will 'update' to the ancient version.
However, when I started the game in full screen mode it popped up an NVIDIA message about being rated 'excellent' but it called it the Mars benchmark. I think Mars is the name of the new SotS2 engine. Unfortunately, the menus all vanish in full screen mode for me so I can't really see beyond that yet.
Ah well, I've got a 50 page manual to read while they get the right version set up.

Did you get it within the launch window? I might get SotS.

Stick with SotS 1. Sword of the Stars 2 is not even close to ready yet. I don't think it's even possible to play a complete game. Worse yet, they called the exe "mars.exe", which kicks in a profile for some game called Mars Maniacs. That causes the game to go completely insane.
Sword of the Stars 1, however, is very fun and very deep (and very cheap). It takes some getting used to (a strong planet can build a huge dreadnaught every other turn) but once you get over the learning curve it's great fun. Be *sure* to read the instructions!

The game is now is giving away the DLC until Nov. 30th. There have already been a couple of big patches so they are burning the developers at both ends to get this thing fixed up. I still wouldn't say it's in playable shape but it's getting better.
