but who knows what setting and calibration they did
1. Intresting - I -JUST- ordered 3 x LG monitors (Just prior reading your reply). This actully gives me slight hope that they can improve the monitor through firmware updates. Its LG afterall, a good brand with above average customer service and so forth.
2. Exactly, I not read the review you linked, just looked at specs and read one at DigialVersus. The Black Level on the LG is 0,47 cd/m2 OUT OF THE BOX - Calibrated its about 0,22 cd/m2. On the ASUS its 0.38 cd/m2 OUT OF THE BOX, 0.14 cd/m2 calibrated.
To be honest, the above average gamer wont notice this, and if so - only in the smallest degree. I never been a big fan of monitor calibration and the "Graphic"-nazis that swear by IPS panels and 16:10. These 120 Hertz monitors were made for GAMERS, and in that category they absolutely ROCK. My recommendations (After viewing both screens, ASUS and LG) would be the LG - But then again, thats only because I HATE glossy screens (See, its all personal preferance!).
Oh, if you DO get the LG (Or 3) - First thing you should do is to turn on the THRU-mode and turn OFF that silly gimmecky light-bar at the bottom .. silly thing, more a distraction than anything.

1. Im sory that was the Acer GD245HQ I was referring to, you can't yet turn off sharpness or overdrive (or what it is) in the service menu of LG W2363D. That why I wonder how the sharpness/overdrive/RTC effect is on the LG. So far no reviewers have taken a proper picture with black text or graphic on grey background. 3D vision blog took this picture but i cant see anything wrong with it.
2. I'm not sure if black level equals ability to distinct dark shades.
3. Monitors provide accurate colors is not always so important I agree but I have no problem with extra quality like that if it doesn't make the monitor very expensive. 16:9 monitors are only good for one thing - movies, if you do that mostly I don't see the problem but everything else PC is better at 16:10. You can fit two Windows 7 double-size task bars in 120 pixels.

bebitto's problem was solved.. just latest drivers needed :)
Also, got today my LG W23636D and 3D Vision pack.
1st impressions - well, it's cool :D
There is some ghosting in some situations, but guess that's to be expected with current LCD technology.
As for 2D image, it's decent. It did require some fiddling with color setting out of box to get it right.
There is NO overdrive disable option, however there is 'sharpness' slider. At default was on '5', and it did show too much overdrive. I've set it on '3', and it's good now in 2D - so it's all good in that area.
Still need to work on it a bit more for better impressions :)

1. it seems its too much sharpening and not overdrive that makes these 2D problems
- here's an experiment to show that OVERDRIVE does not cause the DISPLAY SHARPNESS
enter service menu
switch OD to OFF
go to Reset, hit the 3rd button
the sharpness should go away, and brightness should increase
switch OD to ON
go to Reset, hit the 3rd button
the brightness should decrease, sharpness doesnt come back
exit service menu (but dont restart the monitor)
go to http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/sharpness.php
notice that there's no oversharpening (the image is uniform gray when looked from distance, no blocks)
play a 3d game
notice that there's no ghosting (OVERDRIVE IS ACTIVE)
all in all, they goofed up with this monitor's firmware

2. I thought this LG W2363D where among the best in this regard
- On W2363D I can distinguish almost all shadow of dark grey except for the 1-2 darkest shades. This is a good shadow detail results and W2363D maintains a lot of detailing in dark scenes in games and movies. This is positive.

While the Asus VG236H for instance where unacceptable
- The display was equally unable to separate very dark grays from absolute black. As a result, we had a difficult time seeing what was happening in the Blu-ray version of Watchmen’s opening fight sequence.

but who knows what setting and calibration they did
