Eyes Exhaust
  1 / 3
Hello guys, I have bought and used 3d vision for a few days now and I have to say it's pretty impressive. But it really exhaust the eyes, is that normal? I' currently playing assassin creed revelation and witcher 1 mainly, and cant play more than 2 hours , after that amount of time it exhaust/hurt too much my eyes. I usually dont go over 15% depth. On the contrary, I have tested 3d movie and it seem ok, it dosent exhaust eyes as much as games. Do you have some advice for me? It is better to play in a dark room? Are my eyes gonna be use to it after a while and i will be able to play longer or with more depth? Thanks in advance! :) Specs : 24" benq XL2011Z GTX 970 ASUS STRIX I7 4790K 8GB RAM Win 7 64 bit

Yes, it's normal. First 2 weeks i coudn't play 3D more then 30 mins - 1 hour - i felt bad, sometimes got headache. Used 15% of depth as well. You should stop playing if you feel bad and get some rest. After some time it's will be ok. After few monthes i begin play on 100% depth for many hours. After half of a year of playing 3D i admited i had no any limitation for 3D gaming at all

I completely agree with ksyon My own testimony is that I quickly went 100%. For much of that day I played Grid or some other arcade racer. In the evening of that day I had to drive to a meeting somewhere and I felt really funny. I was quite worried in fact. I guess driving games in 3D are one step closer to real driving and therefore confused the old noggin. I slept and everything went back to normal. I now feel that eye exhaustion when I game in 2D! :(

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I always (still) get more eyestrain with high convergence (pop-out). This requires you to focus in front of the screen (cross-eyed a bit) and is a bit more wearisome. Check your convergence setting to make sure it's not too high, and start with no pop out at all.

You'll probably get used to it with time, but I echo what everyone else says - when you start to feel discomfort, stop for a while. Do you play in an area with florescent lighting? It's possible that's making it worse.

Are you kidding me :p I cant stay more than 10 second in 100% without serious hurt ^^ No ok, i get it, i will follow your advice, i think i will go step by step like you said and hope it will improve over time. What thing is influenced by convergence 'im not sure? I see cleary about depth but not sure about what high/low convergence influence. When you say "pop/out" you mean when you feel the image go out of the screen in front on you (sorry my english is not native)? I've assign ctrl+f5 and ctrl+f6 for convergence but when i use the shortcut it seems it didnt change anything i don't see a green indication on the screen who tell me my actual level of convergence like depth shorcuts do. I feel it's better to play with night than with day light?

Are you applying game community game repairs? Things rendering in one eye only, can add to the problem. http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html Also make sure you enable the advanced hot-keys http://3dvision-blog.com/111-changing-the-convergence-level-in-3d-vision/

Add 10% of depth every week or two. Some people can easely start from 50% depth or more without any damage, some cannot. Just move slowly, add next 10% after you can quick focus on current depth and feel no any problems. Try not to set high convergence for a while. Just take your time and everything will be fine =)

Convergence is pop-out, correct. There is no green indicator for it, but it will adjust slowly in many games. So you may need to hold down ctrl f5 or ctrl f6 for 10 seconds or more before you see a difference.

There's a chance that you have a small amount of strabismus, which is normally undetectable without instruments. Bad news is that you'll experience fast eye fatigue using 3D. Good news is that there's a fix for that and you're already doing the training exercises. You are literally training muscles here. So avoid exerting them too much when you start to feel fatigue.

I could only play 3d for about an hour at about 30% for the first couple weeks I had my 3d vision setup. That was 5 years ago. I can now play 3d games at 100% for as long as I like and feel no after effects or headaches or whatever. It's a normal thing for me now. Like Zynerd said, you're literally using your eye muscles like you never have before. They will get stronger. The convergence keys.. sometimes you have to hold down the keys for a while before the image starts to shift. You'll know as soon as it starts to happen. Convergence can turn a 'meh' 3d image, into a WOW! 3D image.

Alright I get it, I will take my time as you said step by step, thanks for sharing, I have to say i was little skeptical at the begining but you give me trust again in the 3d! :p

From what I have read from studies conducted on 3D and eyestrain. The eyestrain is the same as you would get from staring at a laptop/desktop screen. That makes sense to me because your retinas are still focused at screen depth, your eyeballs however tracking distance objects. Unless your interocular distance (the measure of the space between the centre of your eyes) is particularly narrow, the depth even at 100%, shouldn't force your eyes to look beyond the natural point, forcing them to look apart. Too much pop out on the other hand can do cause your eyes to look beyond their natural limits, forcing you to go cross-eyed to focus on close objects. I personally suggest going into a game, walking up to a wall and then reducing convergence until the wall is at screen depth. For third person games you probably want to reduce any pop out in the same way. I think decreasing convergence degrades the quality of the 3D scene. I hate popout if it is forced e.g. an avatar but love high convergence because I like the toyification-like effect it causes. :)

In my experience,a lot depends on the quality of the game in 3D. If everything is rendering at correct depth, I actually find playing in 3D much less of a strain than playing in 2D. As has been stated, popout can be a source of strain. I hardly use any ever. If a game has many things rendering at an incorrect depth much of the time that will cause me headaches. If you haven't already, check out Helixmod (google it). Many fixes for many games there. If I remember correctly though, AC:revelation is quite good in 3D out of the box. Best game in the series is Brotherhood IMHO.
