Future of 3D Vision Support (Official announcement from NVIDIA)
16 / 42
i just learnt the AWFUL BAD NEWS !! For me, it's inconceivable to play on pc without 3Dvision ! games are so immersive with 3Dvision, and i love especially Helixmod team which does a fantastic work and keep the community always very alive and active.
i'm only an user but i hope it will be always possible to play 3Dvision games.
Of course, it's necessary for us to get always the last drivers in order most of non-3Dvision games are optimized and also VR games. i hope there will be an external always-available drivers for 3Dvision.
The best way should be Helixmod has the entire control of 3Dvision drivers relative.
however, i think it will be always possible to install 3Dvision drivers with the personalized installation , right ? i mean we could continue to install always the new Nvidia drivers, but after, to re-use "old" drivers and choose only 3DVision drivers to install, right ?
Thanks for this bo3b _ I think you have a very clear and accurate vision of what the three terms will look like, and I agree with you on your backlog/sameness of modern games comments.
When I purchased my new rig a few weeks back, I figured I would eventually go the W7/W10 dual boot route.
Between the at-death's-door announcement and the fact that I am finding that some of my favorite older games (Shadow Complex, Xmen Origins: Wolverine, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, etc.) are not kicking in in 3DV on W10/latest drivers, I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend.
And again, to all that would be doing the work in helping to extend the life of 3DV, I will support the efforts financially... with a higher priority given than to any new games coming down the pipe.
I had some issues with that on Emperor's Tomb and Rogue Squadron. I finally got them to work in Windows 10 with dgvoodoo and 3dmigoto after switching compatibility mode on the executables to Windows 8.
I am not planning to have a dual boot system in the future if I can avoid it. So far I have had good luck on all my Windows 10 machines.

I don't know how could this happen as if you instal from never package ans unselect the 3D vision driver with Custom driver installation, the system uninstalls the driver as its not selected. Though i keep wondering how many games actually does not work without a specific driver. Optimisation is like the uniform, does it really happen ? I have gone half a year, year without updating drivers just fine.

I cannot say I am not pi**ed off, but on the other hand I am not surprised with nVidia attitude. It was just matter of time and to be honest I was expecting this much sooner. I am part of this community for 1,5 year and it was great time! I had to play one game by another in 3D till I get to the point when there is no good game for me as well with 3D.
I guess we can live somehow with 418 but lets admit that next year this will be dead for sure. We all want better newer HW and newer HW need new drivers, etc.
Now we have to wait and hope that someone will continue on this OR give it up and move to VR sets...
I hope someone will continue. I will support it for sure!

I just added this sad announcement to 3D Fix Manager. I hope more people get informed with this about Nvidia dropping 3D Vision support.
Here is what is exactly shown in 3DFM on startup:
Dear 3D Vision fans,
we have sad news for you. On March 08, 2019 Nvidia officially announced the end of support for 3D Vision. This means that all graphics drivers released after March 2019 don't support 3D Vision any more. Driver branch 418 will be the last one to support stereoscopic 3D.
What does the announcement mean for us 3D gamers?
[.]We are forced to stick with Geforce drivers of branch 418 or older (v.419.35 still works as it still belongs to branch 418)[/.]
[.]We should not update Windows 10 beyond v.1809 (October Update 2018). New feature updates for Win 10 might break the stereo 3D driver.[/.]
[.]We have to take good care of our 3D Vision hardware as in the future it will be hard to get a replacement for defective devices[/.]
What does this mean for 3D Fix Manager?
[.]Nothing. Support for 3D Fix Manager will be continued[/.]
[.]3D Fix Manager warns you if you've already installed a Geforce driver beyond driver branch 418[/.]
[.]In this case 3D Fix Manager provides download links to the last known driver version which was still compatible to 3D Vision[/.]
What does this mean for the development of new 3D fixes?
[.]It's very likely that the development of new 3D fixes is continued as long as Shaderhackers have their 3D Vision hardware still working[/.]

What does this mean for the future of stereo 3D?
[.]Currently our great community developers are discussing about developing an indepentent 3D solution not requiring the 3D Vision driver any more[/.]
[.]Chances are not bad as there are already a lot of features implemented into 3dmigoto which are required to achieve this goal[/.]

hi Paul ! happy you'll continue to support 3DVision, you are part of the family :)
but why Nvidia (and you) speak about 418 drivers as the last one to support 3DVision
i have "419.35-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql" and 3DVision drivers are in it. i got these drivers on Guru3D

Sad indeed.
So today I tried Assetto Corsa Competizione in VR using a Lenovo explorer, watched some VR settings on YouTube and tried to set up as best as my system allows.
After that I played ACC in 2d max everything.
Back to 3d vision 2 and what a difference, even though ACC isn't quite right in regards to depth issues it's still fantastic.
I use 100% with convergence set correctly and the experience is awesome compared to my other 2 options.
2d is just rubbish, there is no sense of anything, no immersion, just a boring experience.
VR is still to compromised IMO, I also don't like the FOV in VR, I know it's meant to be perfectly correct, but I can't help feel it makes driving feel a little off.Perhaps I'm just used to a little bigger FOV, therefore in VR the track seems a little short, makes driving easier too.
I use a FOV of between 50 and 54 on a 27 inch monitor above my wheel with 3d vision and the feeling of track and car size is great. Sense of speed and positioning within the game is awesome.
IMO because graphics are so much better with 3d vision than VR I think the immersion is far better than anything else and it will be a real loss to loose it.

Yeah that's pretty confusing and not easy to see which branch a driver belongs to unless looking in the Release notes. Even nvapi doesn't state that 419.35 still belongs to the 418 branch. So based on what somebody told here that 421.xx doesn't incluse the 3d Vision driver any more i've taken this as the magical number to show a warning message in 3dfm. I hope I'm not wrong with this. Otherwise I'll correct it with another update ^^

that goya/nvidia thing is pretty drastic but funny. I think we should ask for nvidia 3d support for 5 more yrs not 1 yr. since in 5 yr VR and 3D may have breakthru for gaming techs.
Ok, i'll settle for 3 more yrs of Nvidia official support for 3d vision. VR will be well in 2nd gen, Autostereo in 1st gen. Bo3b and DSS will have already rolled out replacement driver for both 3d and VR.
That's it, Nvidia please support 3d drivers for 3 more yrs and we will ask costiq to remove the goya painting for you. :)

What makes you think that Autostereo 3D will be good in 1st gen? So far every new technology had its downsides when being introduced. Stereo 3D reduced brightness, introduced ghosting depending on the display type used and you had to wear glasses which are not always comfortable. Nvidia improved brightness by introducing Lightboost technology in 2nd gen for compensating one of these issues.
VR eliminated ghosting and low brightness but introduced other artefacts due to looking through lenses. Also you have to wear a big headset which is even more uncomfortable than 3D glasses. Resolution was reduced, FOV low but 2nd gen headsets like vive pro and pimax are indeed improving on these issues. Also other issues were introduced with VR like Motion Sickness which are not completely solved yet.
Glass-free 3D or "Auto Stereoscopic 3D" also has a reduced resolution and a loss of brightness. Manufacturers try to compensate this issue by firing 3D with 8k resolution and a really high brightness. But for 8k 3D you might need a high-high-high-end PC for gaming. We don't know other future issues yet but if looking at the past you see that every new technology had its downsides when being introduced.
