I have my hd27hdr projector setup and getting a proper screen tomorrow and will let you know my impressions. I have had several VR headsets (Rift,Vive,Odyssey+) and several 3d displays (vg278he, s2716dg, 55C6P). VR is great and if you go with the odyssey or the new upcoming headsets such as the HP reverb, I am sure you will not be too dissapointed in resolution. Its just a wildly different experience, I do not use VR nearly as much as gaming on a screen though because it is usually a hassle and takes more energy, and headsets you generally do not want to wear for hours.
Well I have come to another crossroads in the 3D epic journey.. I am trying to decide if it is time to move to a VR Headset or get the Optoma HD27HDR PRojector..
I currently have a Optoma HD142x Projector that does 1280x720 @ 120Hz but I think moving to 1080P would be good..
Now the down side is we all know by now 3D vision is dead basically so is it time for me to move on and go with a VR Headset vs the Projector..
Well you know that no one is more of a 3D enthusiast than myself, but in your scenario I think you'd actually be better served with a VR headset.
In the DCS World case, make sure it supports WMR headset and buy one of those. They are much, much cheaper than the other options and typically come with better screens. Lenovo and Dell are better, Acer is marginal. Samsung is good but too pricey. If you don't mind dropping $300 on sale Samsung is an OK choice, but you can get Lenovo on sale or used for like $200.
The real knock on the WMR headsets is the tracking of the controllers is abysmal, and a deal breaker for me. In the DCS case that doesn't matter, which makes it a viable choice.
I'm suggesting give VR a try, and you will be able to determine for yourself whether it's worth it or not. Given the huge price disparity to a 1080p projector, it's worth trying. Resolution is terrible in all VR, and might be a deal breaker for you, especially as you are considering 1080p projector.
Just my 2c, after having tried nearly all the VR headsets and my still go-to gaming is 720p projector. 3D Vision and VR are not mutually exclusive, it's OK to use both. :-> It's not really a time to move on, they really serve different purposes, just like projector 3D is not the same as monitor 3D.

Well I spent the last hour going over some WMR Headsets.. Now the big question I have what is the overall Aspect Ratio of the combined picture you see in the headset.. Say like a normal Monitor is usually 16:9 AR I was wondering what it is in the headsets??
I still don't like the idea of not seeing the ouside world on demand altho it did have a camera to let you see with a hotkey guess that would be better then having to take it off..
The one thing I do like about the projector is it is big.. I would like to buy the Optoma HD27HDR for a 2 fold reason one to game on and the other I have built my Hometheater into my Gaming PC as well.. the longer life bulb is really what I like on the one setting the bulb is supposed to last 15000 hours which would be years of use before I need a new bulb..
I guess what is in order is to goto a Store that has a WMR/HMD headset on display and try it out for myself..
The other thing I am thinking is the games need to be fixed in 3D vision which for me is bad.. and the future is really looking gloom for 3D vision at this point but I do love it as well..
Would love to be able to just keep my Projector forever with 3D vision but it is not to be..
I will try and get to someplace that has demos of the headsets and at least see it for myself..
I do have 1 question if I did buy the Odyssey + would I need a monitor when I am not wearing the headset or too log into the device or what not before I play a game?? I know my friend has to do this with the rift but I am unsure about the WMR's??
Thank you ;)

Instead of thinking about it as an aspect ratio, Think about it as wearing swimming goggles, they do cover your field of view so you can not see to the left and right of your peripheral vision as much as you can without them. The WMR headsets have a home app that starts up when you put the headset on , and you can browse your desktop like normal with keyboard/mouse or the motion controls.

Oh no. Well let me know how it goes. Itching to know how it works for somebody else.
How can you run 3D vision on a VR headset? Something like the HP Reverb with it's crazy high resolution would be great for 3D vision on a virtual screen. Am I right?

It's currently possible to do this using DarkStarSword's SBS shader for DX11 games. And it also works to get SBS output from native games like Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you get SBS output from a 3D game, you then use Virtual Desktop or BigScreen to get a virtual 3D TV and see in true 3D. TriDef VR did this, but died because they locked it to server and they went bankrupt. VorpX will do this, but requires using his 3D conversion which typically is not as good as our 3D fixes.
These work mostly OK, but are hard to get working. There is also a fairly big performance penalty in all scenarios where I've tried this. As I've mentioned earlier, PaulDusler and I are working on an app to do this virtual 3D TV, and may have something to show in a few months.
The HP Reverb is promising, but I'm expecting it to be still not quite as good as a 720p projector with 3D Vision. The problem is that even though it's high res, the resolution is stretched over a 110 degree view, which gives you only a small subset of the pixels for your virtual TV. On OG Rift and Vive, I estimate the virtual screen to be roughly 800x600 level of quality.
I will be keenly interested in comparison shots of in-screen views compare on a Vive Pro vs. Reverb. Part of it will also be the pixel fill ratio, so Index and Reverb might dramatically improve here.
