I beg to differ on both statements:
1.)While what jaafaman said is corrent, 24p vs. 48p when referring to transfer in stereo requires that the display works at least at 24hz and 48hz for the according framerate (talking about 3dtvs and hdmi 1.4a). Currently you can play up 60p in 3d at 1280x720 resolution, but you can play only 24p at 1920x1080 and this is due to bandwidth limitation with the current hdmi chips. Future chips as was stated in interviews will enable 4k in 2d and 1080p@60hz in 3d.
2.)24p is a feature of the tv, maybe a common one for some time now, but a feature still. My old 2006 Sony lcd can't do 24p, meaning that you cannot play 24p at 24hz (1:1), but only at 60hz progressive or 50hz interlaced.

What seems crazy to me is that the movies are still going at 24fps. Here we are on the PC gaming side of things demanding faster and faster framerates. I've seen some folks complaining that they can't stand playing a game with less than 100fps. Yet here are these big, multi-million-dollar movies poking along at 24fps! Having a TV that can go that SLOW is considered a feature!
But yeah, 24 doesn't go into 60 so well. It's interesting to see what craziness they pull to try and smooth it out. It *does* go into 120 quite nicely, though. So what's the point of a 24fps mode when it already has 120? A power savings, maybe?

Sort of like how everyone starts repeating back what they heard and it becomes fact to them.SO-SO director says 24fps filming is the only way to go. New director who looks up to so-so director does same. Fan repeats its cycle continues.
