The state of 3d gaming + my setup 3d gaming and my setup
The state of 3d gaming has been going downhill lately in most respects with little uphill spurts.
Many older 3d websites have either disapeared or have not been updated in a long time.
Nvidia is very slow to release new 3d drivers and doesn't communicate.
On the good side, we have the MTBS3d web site and a glimmer of hope in the new 3d rear projection TVs.
My main beef right now is that what little does exist for 3d is spread out. I have to go to different web sites to see lists of games that work with 3d, drivers, help, reviews of procucts, tests of the best dlp projectors, forums with usefull information and discussions, etc..
I was hoping that MTBS3d would be a one stop shop for that but the discussions are few and the information of what games work well isn't able to be seen.
We need a complete games database that lists games with user rankings of 3d effects, tested 3d driver versions used, and comments about problems and solutions to get the most out of that game.
Perhaps it could also be a sort of "myspace" thing where you could click on a forum user and see his favorite 3d games and current hardware so people could get an idea of what works well and who to ask questions to.
I have been an on again off agian user of 3d since the early wicked3d eyescream stuff came out. I am currently creating a fully enlcosed 7 foot long by 4 foot wide by 5 feet tall universal gaming simpit with a 60 inch screen and Sharp XR10 projector. That projector does the best and most ghost free 3d that I have seen at 1024x768 and 85 hertz and was only about $550 dollars refurbished. I use the Edimensional glasses. It will also have my Klipsh 4.1 THX speakers in it. I'll set up a web site with pics when I am finsihed but that may be a couple months. I got the wood stuff done and played a little Revolt played in 3d...it almost made me nautious. The long part will be wiring it up and creating control panels for flight sims, diving, and FPS games. I am almost done putting black carpeting and black rubber flooring inside.
What the heck...I'll go ahead and link a picture of the outside:

I totally agree. A visual global main 3D website with beginner info, latest new products, reviews, how to... etc. This could be nice.
Personally I got tired of this "spread out info" and made my own 3D info website:
http://www.3d.wep.dk
It's so much easier to type: "www.3d.wep.dk"
than to type:
"go to this forum and look for this thread if I remember correctly".
Also there's a lot of outdated or boring 3D stuff on the internet.
3D is visual, awsome and the future. And it should be easy to use for newcommers.
If ppl get a BlueScreenOfDeath installing the drivers for the 1. time they drop it, I think. I know I would.

Good job of creating one place to go for the links! Unfortunately, it times out on me trying to get to it from work. I am not sure why.
It appears that the dozens of new effects added to graphics cards have been developed quicker than Nvidia can figure out how to make them work in 3d. We are left with 3d stereo being just something a few of us dedicated enthusiasts will spend time on. A person that goes to Edimensional and buys glasses based on outdated claims of them working with 1000s of games will be very disapointed and toss the glasses in a drawer the moment their BF2 appears unplayable.
Perhaps I can save up enough money to rent space on the Quakecon floor to demo some good 3d games in my pod and get people excited about 3d. There were more than 7000 people passing through Quakecon this year. E3 would obviously be the coolest place to demo 3d but I would need a sponsor. I believe the avergae person can no longer go to E3 anyway, so it would just be to push manufacturers.
Hardware and software companies have no idea how some fairly simple changes in the way they do things could make 3d easy for the consumer.
Game companies need to have options to turn off certain enhancements with one click of a button that says "Run in 3d Compatability Mode" and have HUDS and crosshairs in true 3d and not just overlays.
Hardware companies need to make DLP projectors 120hz like was proven can be done with the DepthQ years ago. The new DLP rear projections show promise but for some reason only work with only a couple games and strange drivers.
I know there are methods with polarizing filters and mirrors to achive ghost free 3d, but a single DLP projector and shutter glasses is just easier and able to be viewed by multiple people from multiple angles.

I was looking around the Quakecon site and found one of their sponsors this year was a company called AMBX. Apparently, they created some software that game makers can interface with and pass on ambiant information to certain hardware that improves immersion. The hardware does things like lights up the wall behind your monitor, rumbles a pad, or blows air from 2 variable fans at you. Unfortunately, the only function for non supported games is the lighting.
Only a few games support everything and non of them are the ones that support the new 3d DLP TVs.
That would be the ultimate to have a game in an enclosed environment projected in 3d with flashing lights, vibration, and wind controlled by the game...that could be affordable and not take up to much room. The only thing left is motion, but that is too bulky and expensive for even rich gamers.
Ambx would be too easy to be snuffed out if Microsoft would just include ambiant cues into DirectX so any company could make a device that takes info from the game and convert it to something physical. Games would have to send out wind speed and what direction it comes from, ambient light colors and intensity from different directions (this could also do lightning/gun flashes from certain sides of you) and vibration frequency and intensity that is seperate from the bass audio signal. I imagine someone could hack speed data from certain games for wind and detect gunshots for vibration and flashing effects...ahh...nevermind...the world is being dominated by plugging in game cartridges on the family TV so companies wouldn't see money in this...

There are some good ideas here. I think you know why I don't post MTBS certification results, and how formal hardware reviews would put MTBS in a conflict of interest. However, here is another idea:
We can set up a member interactive database where users like yourself can submit games, game settings, and game results. It would be dynamic, and it would be a convenient reference tool for members. It would not be an official MTBS certification list, but it would probably give us the best of both worlds. How does that strike you?
As for the hardware reviews, members have always been welcome to post their reviews on our website forums. I'm not sure where I see the problem.
On a final note, why the pessimism? I just came back from 3D Biz-Ex, and from the industry's point of view, we - MTBS and its members - have accomplished a great deal. In fact, there is going to be a slew of announcements coming out soon that I think you will be pleased with.
S-3D is for the masses, not "enthusiasts". This "glimmer of hope" mindset is very inaccurate. S-3D is here to stay, grow, and flourish. That's our future.

A member interactive database would be a perfect addition. I do understand why the web site can't take official positions on things due to the relationships with the industry. It drives me nuts that there it is so hard for someone new to 3d to know how to configure games and what games will work, what issues there are with them working, and what games are best for 3d. I am wondering if I need a multi-boot operating system just to have the choice between which 3d driver pairs I need for each game.
Nvidia bashing is warranted though. They aren't making official announcements and are getting slower and slower to release new and working drivers.
I hope you are correct about all of these soon to be released announcements, and please keep up the good work on your web site.

Does anyone know when Nvidia is coming out with these Vista Drivers because I have Vista and I just ordered my HMD display headgear hoping to play in Vista soon. Does anyone know if the HMD devices will display 3d regardless of drivers? Or do you have to have the drivers to see 3D???

It looks like Nvidia's 3D driver for Vista is comming soon. I don't have a HMD but You need a 3D driver to make 2 different views of the game world. The Forceware driver only makes 1.

There was an idea proposed here that we have a user driven online database of video games for debugging and best game setting preferences. Just wanted to let you know that MTBS takes feedback like this seriously, and we have acted on it.

I read this thread, and I'd like to share some thoughts.
First, let's stop bashing NVIDIA. Look at these attachments and tell me if you see anything interesting. I will send more when I can.

Chopper

There was an idea proposed here that we have a user driven online database of video games for debugging and best game setting preferences. Just wanted to let you know that MTBS takes feedback like this seriously, and we have acted on it.
It's in our downloads section at mtbs3D.com.
