Red Static? (HDMI / Acer H5360) Help - Red static 120hz only?
  1 / 2
Hi all,

I really enjoy my Acer H5360 and 3D Vision. I've got the projector set up on the ceiling, projecting onto a 92" manual screen and it looks great.

I have a small issue where when in 120HZ I get red static in the picture, and only in dark areas on the screen (not noticeable when the screen is fully lit in colour but only in dark areas.

I'm using a 35 FT HDMI cable from my living room computer, up the wall to the ceiling projector. I never receive any red static when watching movies or gaming in 60 HZ refresh rates - only when moving up to 120HZ.

I've heard theories that the cable is degraded (nicked or damaged) but don't have another long cable lying around to test (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2070028). Has anyone had any experience? Or should I simply buy another 35 FT cable and hope this resolves it?

Thank you,
Michael

It's usually a cable issue, especially if it only occurs at High refresh rates.

Had a similar issue with 10 meter cables (~33 ft), except I got blue static on dark areas. Spent upwards of €100 purchasing different cables as a lot of the AV forums discussions said theres no difference in the higher priced brands. Eventually got sick of the the same problem happening with cable after cable on 120hz.(went through 7 or 8)

Final resort was the get one of these: http://www.hdcable.co.uk/10m-1-4-hdmi-cable-with-ethernet-infiniushd.html
No problems with it, no snow anywhere, no signal dropping.
I guess theres no difference in the quality HDMI cables when you have short lengths, but its a load of crap when your purchasing ones of that length which will run at 120hz.

-Edit--
I'm also using a H5360

Thanks! Appreciate the advice - I was leaning on cable issue, it's just that I've also heard that it's a digital signal and that quality shouldn't be an issue. I will check out that cable Dracomd. Cheers, Michael

Supposedly its not that the video signal gets degraded since as you mentioned its digital, but that a "HDMI Handshaking" protocol is slightly less than perfect at that length, so the display device can't fully interpret the signal for darker scenes. At least thats the explanation I got from the cable guys, and their cable worked so they're probably right.

To confirm, if anyone else has this issue. I bought a 'cheap' 1.4A SPEC HDMI figuring this would solve the problem, it didn't (despite the full bandwith 3D spec) I tried again ordering another 1.4A HDMI cable, but this time 22 AWG wire instead of the cheaper 30 AWG in the first 1.4A spec cable. The 22AWG was considerably thicker, and completely removed the sparkles/red static seen. It was about $45 CDN from Amazon (3rd party seller called AV Gear) really happy with the cable, heaviest duty cable I've ever seen.

Thanks again for the help,
Michael

Hey i have a similar problem when i try to run that projector at 120 hz, the screen became darker ad a little bit red and the projector lock me the color temperature at 0 (HOT). BUt when i try to force it at 122 hz (32 bit forced with powerstrip) the screen became lighter like the 60 hz mode. The problem is when i run 3d vision, nvidia doesn't allow me to run it at 122 hz, so i'm stuck with 120 hz red screen. i'm running a DVI to HDMI cable from my gtx 580 direct cuII. Plz help

I had that issue on my 3007wfp-hc and was able to wiggle the connection at the DL-dvi port to get it to go away, but it would come back sometimes so eventually i ordered a new, cheap cable which worked fine for many years.

I got a weird red tint on my 5360 when i used the corded glasses. The red tint went away when i used the wireless glasses. Dont know if this was the same problem, but if u are using a corded pair of glasses, it might be an issue

Red tint is a known issue with the wired glasses (....like all of them.they are shitty) Also color issues of either red, green, blue are often as above stated caused by cables bending hdmi/dvi port inproperly put in (loose) | Stress caused by weight put on the port.(Like if your cables are weighing down your projectors port) I had red artifacts appear due to cable weighing down the port.

HDMI Type-A cables are forward and backward compatible with DVI. DVI-D Dual Link is not compatible with HDMI Type-A. It may be red if you are using the H5360 as an EDID override. I had that problem, until I changed the color profile in the override.
