Not getting any pop out effects but I get depth...am i missing somethin?
  1 / 2
just bought an Asus VG278H 3d vision 2 ready monitor running on a gtx590 and after a few days i kinda understand whats going on as far as the settings for games/movies for 3d with the whole convergence thing. The games i tried have great depth which is very impressive especially far cry 2. But with all the games and i watched my first blu ray 3d movie today (RE: Afterlife) but im not noticing any pop out on your desk type of effects. Does this type of 3d not do that? The nvidia demo in control panel put the logo right on my desk and was awesome but i do not get the effect in games or movies? Am I doing something wrong?

Enable in-game hotkeys in your nvidia control panel \ stereoscopic settings...then change increase convergence to "+" and decrease convergence to "-"

like this...

Now when you are playing a game try increasing the convergence. Ususally for 3rd person games I set the convergence on the main carachter. This means that WITHOUT GLASSES on you should focus convergence on your carachter so that it appears fine without glasses...then put them on. Things will be poping out all over! :)

Thank You for the reply but i have been messing with the convergence and depth hotkeys for a few days now and i see the depth increase from adjusting both but things still are not jumping off the screen at me.

That's the hard way, IMHO. I think it's a lot easier to hold the green light down on the emitter and twist the dial.

HOWEVER, be careful what you wish for! Pop out is very neat but it's also VERY easily mangled. Consider these two shots, for instance:
http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/Zloth/image/4da9f9633785012b0d240200/
http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/Zloth/image/4dbc42cc3785014f743c0000/
(hopefully the website will work for you - it's a bit touchy)

If popout tries to pop out when there's some screen-depth game interface over the top or when the popout gets cut off by the edge of the screen, it looks BAD. The depth cues are telling you that the object is 8 inches away AND that it is at least 24 inches away. The optical processing in your brain has no clue what to do with that so it just makes a mess. A very distracting mess, too.

I guess our eyes see things different, some may notice more effects than others?. I have been using the 3D Vision 1 kit for quite some time and i don't really see any popout effects when gaming, in fact i rarely see any "in your face popout", it's more "out of screen" effects and slight at that. But i don't generally have a high stereoscopic percentage, maybe around 15% stereoscopic 3D (which is nvidias default depth, in the nvidia control settings). Nice to see Rockstar Studio gave seperation and convergence in their max payne 3 game menu. I have it around 7 and 15 generally. Thee are a lot of things happening on screen in game play but i can't really say i see loads of popout effects, maybe it's just me?. The only game i can recall giving popout effects was half life 2 when you blasted the zombie creatures/headcrabs or whatever they are all called?, that appeared to have quite a decent amount of popout, or maybe the first time is more noticible and the longer you go on you just don't notice it as much?. I only really notice the "out of screen" effect in screenshots rather than when i'm actually playing a game (don't watch a lot of movies so no comment).

These screenshots i took of Max Payne and his golden gun (lol) appears to have " out of screen effect " but i don't really see this when playing in real time though. But the screenshot with the hand gun pointing directly at you makes me go cross-eyed, hahaha!.

well, actually the 3D effect is the depth not POPUP effects, if you are playing any game, with a balance ammount of convergence and high depth adjusted to your eye, you can easily see a lot of things "Poping out of the screen" most common effects are snow, and particles in the air, MEtro 2033 tehre are a lot of those Popout effects, just cause 2, kingdoms of amalur, any game you play, if an object comes close to the screen, you will see the popup effect... i see a lot of people saying, omg 3D = out of the screen that isn't true, 3D is x,y,z and the cool about the 3d effect, is to play a game where you can calculate distance of object just like if you were in that place, you can put yourself in the scene with much more facility since you know where you are, also the looking down from a building vertigo effect is cool.
probably you are ok, if you wan't to see something popping out, just put your game screen close to any object, and it should be popping out of the screen... i usually play with 100% depth, and increase convergence up to a point where the 2 images start to hardly separate from each other, and 3D gaming is awesome.

Sorry haven't had a chance to reply to this thread with work and all but thank you guys for the responses It makes more sense now. Like I said I can really i mean really see the depth of the games with 3d vision. I thought 3d was i guess was more holographic then depth. But a few month ago at best buy i tried on demo glasses on a big tv and the demo video was runway models (pretty neat eh) well when they walked toward u they were like in mid air a full 3d hologram it seemed like, now is that some kinda different 3d because i understand there are different types of 3d for home use. Every company kinda uses their own 3d technology?

One more thing that's been bugging me those screen shots some of you posted the images or what u call....side by side?? I can see those in 3d (BY THE WAY IM USING THE ASUS MONITOR WITH THE BUILT IN EMITTER) what i can see in 3d is the blurry images with the bright colors. I can never see the side by side of the over under?? ones. Am i doing something wrong here. Okay im dedicated to this thread i finally feel like im getting answers, instead of goggling for hours on end..that got tiresome. Thank you all again for the insight.

i usually only use 20-25% depth because any higher it get crazy blurry, i treid to adjust the convergence to adjust to the higher depth with no luck. Is that the problem? more depth. ill play around with it some more after i eat here (3rd shift sucks). Thanks again guys

That doesn't sound right, if the image appears blured, do all your games in sterescopic 3D look smeared?. Is your nvidia control panel at nvidia default settings?, reason i ask is because sometimes- if not all the time- if i adjust different settings in the nvidia control panel this can have an adverse effect with games i play. For example, in max payne 3 there is the new FXAA setting, now i must of read wrong somewhere but i thought you had to set this FXAA in the control panel along with adaptive v-sync if i wanted to use those features in games, but when i enabled the FXAA in the nvidia control panel for max payne 3 profile the game froze and then the whole computer hard plocked, i had to reset the pc, then i had to delete the Max Payne 3 graphics xml file in the Rockstar Game folder in my documents and reset the whole games graphics settings to Rockstars default settings, lol.

The 3D should be the Same the only differences are when you are using Passive or ACtive 3D, the overall quality is better with Activer, but passive is cheaper.

The DEMOS they use just are specially made to throw itens at your face, if you had that same demo on your computer the result should be the same items getting out of the screen, if you don't see that something is wrong with your setup, just watch that nvidia demo with nvidia logo moving around, that is an example of 3D coming out of the screen... what i said before is that the 3D iSNT just about coming out of the screen, but it is abouth overall depth x,y,z just like humans eye work...

i don't know what images you were trying to see but if you can't see a 3D vision image properly probably something is wrong with your 3D configuration or hardware. check out those picture on 3D Vision live, and see if they work properly.

it takes sometime to adjust your eyes to use 100% depth, at start i was using something like 50% too, at high depth you can experience headaches and sometimes your eyes don't adjust correctly due to the monitor normal distance etc, 1/2 days using and you can probably set it to 100% already. convergence can be set on default for most of games, some games require adjusting it for a better experience and other games just don't need that, normally games that auto adjust it lock it. if you got Just Cause 2 there, test that game in 3D, that was one of the first games i've tried in 3D and the 3D effects are amazing. make sure you have updated your graphics driver to the latest version the last update 304.48 increased a lot of FPS for me.

In-Store they set the displays up differently to adjust for things like flourescent lighting etc.

They also use Demo videos that specifically have way more pop out, to wow people.

Having that much pop out isn't pratical. Each time you get random pop outs. it causes yuor eyes to have to change their focal point. So if there are constant pop outs in a movie, you could get a headache fast.

Gaming is different, you can adjust the convergence to your liking. Once set, it stays the same for the most parts.

The thing is, once you adjust the convergence radically in the opposite direction, it inverts the frames. So you have to invert the sync on the glasses.

The easiest way to tell if your glasses need the sync inverterted, is to remove them and put them on upside down.

If the image is better and there is no eyestrain, invert the synch signal in the display menu or on the glasses if they are capable.

Like others have said in this thread, pop-out effects are really game specific. In almost every case, I can get pop-out in any game just by moving the convergence out in front of the monitor. I leave my depth at 15% and then adjust my convergence until I get good pop-out and can still see all the game items. In Skyrim, I get up next to a bush or a tree and repeatedly hit ctrl+F6 to increase my convergence until the branch of the tree or bush is sticking out of my screen a good amount. Diablo 3 also needs a convergence adjustment to get good pop-out happening. The particles in Diablo 3 actually look like they are rendered outside the monitor. You find yourself wanting to wave the fog away like it is in the room instead of in the game.

3D ready games like Just Cause 2 have awesome pop-out effects right out of the box and need little to no convergence adjustment. When you activate the parachute in that game, the chords of the parachute stick way out of the screen and give you a great 3D pop-out effect.
Like others have said in this thread, pop-out effects are really game specific. In almost every case, I can get pop-out in any game just by moving the convergence out in front of the monitor. It depends on the game also. With Max Payne 3 I just see depth, convergence only causes ghosting. Trine 2 jumps out on my lap!

For example, in max payne 3 there is the new FXAA setting, now i must of read wrong somewhere but i thought you had to set this FXAA in the control panel along with adaptive v-sync if i wanted to use those features in games, but when i enabled the FXAA in the nvidia control panel for max payne 3 profile the game froze and then the whole computer hard plocked, i had to reset the pc, then i had to delete the Max Payne 3 graphics xml file in the Rockstar Game folder in my documents and reset the whole games graphics settings to Rockstars default settings, lol.

the control panel is set at like 25% but that dont mater i think because I adjust it in-game with the hot keys, it is not "smeared" I use the convergence hotkeys, enough to make it clear but the ratio between depth and convergence is still something i gotta fine tune.

yea but when i adjust convergence the further in one direction splits the images not make them come out of the screen, right?
