Avatar BlueRay 3D Depth Request for feedbacks of Avatar 3D BlueRay experience
Hello altogether

Recently I got one of Panasonic's Avatar 3D BlueRays.
However watching the BlueRay yesterday, I was indeed disappointed. Everything looked flat and most of the time it was hard to note a difference between watching the movie with 3D-Glasses and watching it without (aside from the brightness of course). The only thing that gave a real 3D impression were the subtitles translating the Na'vi language. They really popped out of the screen, but everything else ... well, rather flat.

Here is my setup:
- Nvidia Geforce 460GTX
- Nvidia 3D-Vision Set
- Acer H5360
- 274 x 154 Screen
- PowerDVD 10 (Trial Version)

As operating system I use a fresh install of windows 7 along with the latest nvidia drivers. Stereoscopic3d is enabled in Nvidia Control Panel and the Nvidia-3D-Test performs just fine.

My question is, why Avatar is looking so flat. I read from other people in this forum, that they had an even better experience than in cinema. They described it as jawdropping. However I have also read from some people complaining about poor 3D-depth in Avatar, like in my case. However from their posts I couldn't derive any solution or cause of the problem.

I would very much appreciate any hints of what the problem might be. I would also appreciate it very much if the people who have working setups with the Avatar 3D-BlueRay, could briefly describe their system.

If you need further information I am happy to provide that.

Looking forward to your answers and thanks in advance

it sounds very much like powerDVD is playing the 2D disk and converting it to 3D, rather than playing the actual 3D.

I have almost the same set up as you and the 3D in this film was amazing.

i am using an mkv file though, not a bluray - but the mkv would surely have been ripped from the bluray.

Have a check of the actual disk and se if it says 3D (could be a scam if you bought it on ebay or something, i.e. selling a 2D film with a printed 3D case)

does the disk give you the option to play the film in 2D or 3D (does on the 3D disks i own)

Have a look at your settings, when you click on the 3D button, can you adjust the depth? if so then this is a sign that it is simply converting a 2D source as you have no depth control with a 3D source.

One thing to note is the subtitles should be at screen depth, not popping out at all. (though it would appear they are relatively, since the film would be set back to create depth)

Take a look with your glasses off, are the subtitles doubled? if so I would expect this is a sign that it is a 2D source being converted.

Yeah, as you guessed correctly, I indeed bought it on ebay. However the Disk says to be 3D and the disk menue gives the option to play the film in 2D or 3D. Furthermore the case was still wrapped in a transparent plastic, so I don't believe the disk to be scam. Or the most professional one I have ever seen ;-)

You are absolutly right, I had depth control.

Can't really remember about that one, but it probably was as you described it.

Again a 100% hit. I indeed did this during the movie and they were doubled.

Thank you very much for these explanations. Do you know how to convince PowerDvD to play real 3D? I'll make some experiments as soon as I get home this evening. Thanks again.

Hello altogether

Thanks for your answers.
Jesterday I spent well over 2 hours trying to get PowerDVD to play the 3d-Avatar BlueRay correctly! And I failed... Suddenly I had the idea to try it with a different Playback software and downloaded arcsoft total media theater 5 and .... everything worked out of the box! For the 3D-experience I sum up:

- Marvelous
- JawDropping
- Brilliant

an enormous amount of detail, the little flies flying around, the water drops and everything at great 3D-depth. I am happy :-) and going to buy arcsofts software as soon as I got rid of PowerDVD.

Thanks for your help, without your lifely descriptions I might have given up before...

Thanks so much

I am considering buying AVATAR Blue Ray DVD too, would you mind posting a couple of screenshots in S-3D to assess depth? Just pause the playback on your PC at the scene that looks nice in 3d and press ALT-F1, you screens will automatically be saved to My Documents / NVStereoscopic3D.IMG folder. You can then attach them to the reply message in this forum (via "Click to attach files" option below editing window) for us to enjoy:). If anyone else have good 3d movies, please share you screens as well! For example, sample screen from my Shreck 3d trailer -

I was a little disappointed as well at first. Paid $100 for this 3DBD off Ebay and the 3D was blah? And I already had the 3 disc collector's version? Well, it turned out that the reason why the 3D wasn't so spectacular was due to me viewing the movie using the DLP Link mode on my projector - even though I had my Nvidia Glasses on - I use DLP Link setting so I could use the set of glasses (for wife, etc. they use the DLP Link's because they were 'cheaper' to buy) but when I switched the projector to 3D Vision mode... MAN... I was blown away. I've always liked my Nvidia glasses more than the DLP Link, but this solidified it. Sure, some scenes still weren't 3D at all as I took the glasses off and noticed no double image at some points, but when the stereo effect was on screen, it looked great and the colors was richer and deeper. I never seen this movie in the theater, but watching it home on my 150" screen makes me feel like I didn't miss anything at all. /pinch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':pinch:' />

I never got a chance to see Avatar in 3d in the theater, and I promised myself that I wouldn't watch it until I could get the 3d version working on my home plasma. I am really glad I waited as 3d stereo adds untold amounts of tangibility to the environments and characters. Simply amazing stuff.

Took me a while to get a second pair of 3d vision glasses ($150, really nV?!), but now my wife and I can catch the 3d stereo native movies we have been missing. We have Clash of the Titans 3d queued up, and I would love to see Tron Legacy in 3d stereo.

I have always been about 3d stereo gaming, and I wasn't too thrilled about movies in 3d, but wow, if any of the new crop of native 3d movies are as good as Avatar, I want to see them all.

Don't! Just don't watch Clash of the Titans in 3D, you will regret that, I promise. It is a horrible conversion, and it is the main reason why everybody is so sceptical about conversions these days. Watch it in 2D and you should be fine.
Tron Legacy however is very nice in 3D and I definitely recommend that.

This is the stereoscopic Trailer of Avatar, that was sended last year on AnixeHD. Broadcasted was 1440x1080 SideBySide upscaled by me to FullHD-3D.
It shouldn't be as sharp as the BluRay but it should have the same amount of Depth.
A few landscape-scenes seem to be 2D only(trailer-related, I guess), but the 3D-Scenes are true 3D - not a conversion.

I hope all the links work well, if not - don't be afraid to tell me /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> .

EDIT: And don't look "Clash of the Titans" in 3D. It's a real poor 3D-Conversion. It was not worth the cinema-money /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .
But "Tron Legacy" was really cool in 3D - as "Resident Evil Afterlife" was it too /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .

Actually the blu-ray had extra work done on it and is now amongst the better conversions (though the cinema version was a travesty). In fact out side of the Shrek films I would say it is the best conversion. Just watch the scorpion attack and get ready to be amazed. /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I have a very similar issue, tried Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, both are absolutly flat. There's no parralax at all, it's like player just showing only left or right frame all the time. Have no idea what to make of it.

Hello "Flint Eastwood" , I'd really would like to have a clarification about this video u uploaded. Actually it's the first movie trailer that I could watch with full 3d effect and without the out of sync issue. Can you please tell me what's main difference between this video and the others. It would really be of a great help. This out of sync issue with movies is driving me crazy . Thank you very much
