Depth Magnified Why are close objects warped?

Fallout 3 doesn't have a field of view setting, does it? The only game I remember with a FoV setting was X3: Terran Conflict. (I turned it down as far as it would let me to reduce the 'planet looks like an egg' effect.)

Now i remember, it was a key command i made to set my fov, because it reset every time you loaded to a different area. I used google to find it.

Interesting, I wish I had known that back when I played the game! I like my monitor to be a 'window into the world' so I would like to set it at 45 degrees or so. (At least I presume so - no game has let me do that.)

Ok, so i took noticed a really good place to show the problem; were Alyx in HL2 first hands you the gravity gun:

The .jps files are here, along with some Metro 2033 shots that exhibit the same problem with the gun being way out of proportion.

This is default convergence and frustum with maximum depth, sitting 2.7 ft from a 46" screen, giving ruffly a 70ish degree screen-FOV with game FOV of 75 degree.

Why does no one else notice this??? My guns look as big as an M1A1 tank gun barrel.

So, has anyone checked out the two HL2 shots yet and noticed whether or not the gravity gun looks humongous when holding it vs when Alyx is holding it? ( ..and btw, if you do this and it looks normal, please try to move closer to the screen and note the effect.)
