I realize there is a wealth of information out there on this and I have actually done some reading on what is required etc but I have a few questions I would like to get clarification on if possible.
1) I have heard it is possible to use 3d Vision with a 60hz LCD screen, the only limitation being you will experience headaches/nausea faster than with a 120hz LCD is this correct?
2) If I was to have say, a 100hz HDTV would this be adequate as well? and will this improve play time noticeably?
3) Is there a performance hit from using 3d and if so by what margin? (obviously it would vary game to game but a general estimation is all I am after here)
4) Does it work with SLI enabled?
5) Can I purchase it retail? matter of fact where do I purchase it at all?

1. 60hz.. to put it bluntly, no. You're going to want a 120hz capable 3d ready display.
2. Those 100-120hz tv's aren't actually 'true' 120hz. They accept a 60hz input and they convert it to 120hz.. basically
they lack the necessary bandwidth to transfer the 3d information.
3. Yes there is a definite performance hit. Id say roughly 20-40 % less FPS in some cases. (If you have a good
high end system that is)..
4. Yes you can use SLI.
5. You can purchase it retail at a few places.. where do you live ?

Mate your system is better than mine on nearly.
I find framerates below 30 unacceptable. I also typically play at 1680 x 1050.
GTA4 which i was running @ > 30fps with high textures, 35 on the sliders and highest other settings (shadow depth off), now plays at 1440 x 900 with low texture and all shadows off (cars and peds and objects all have a basic shadow built in though).
But mate, the 3D is more than worth the lower settings. Seriously.
I only mention the above because it is by far the worse contender. Fallout 3, Batman run fine on my rig 3D. Should defo run ok on yours. :)

Damn thats annoying about the refresh rate limitations, I just bought myself a new 24inch monitor!
So your saying there would be a decrease in my performance using an HDTV with 100hz refresh rate due to it not being a true 100hz?
Would it be similar in performance to just using a 60hz LCD?[/quote]
Apparantly the kit is hard to come by in australia, I live in Auckland New Zealand and was talking to the manager of 'Playtech' (a large gamers warehouse/shop) and he mentioned lots of orders go to australia because very few ozzies stocked the item for some reason... Playtech had at one point 100 units or more, check with them. They are dirt cheap too for lots of stuff....

Nah don't do that, I bought from Playtech and the monitor was screwed and I can tell you I had to shell out a lot to get it shipped back and it took over a month for NZ customs to let the monitor through.
Well thats my experience it's just not worth it from another country, it could be fine and dandy but it might not.
I see alot of the kits and monitors on ebay australia now and it would be cheaper so just do that, or I know an online search you should be able to find who sells locally pretty easily too.
Back when I did it Playtech was my only choice.

Pretty sure you won't get any 3D effect at all on a 60Hz LCD monitor (even if it did work you wouldn't want to use it, 50Hz makes you feel ill after a while let alone 30Hz), and I'm also pretty sure you won't get any on a 100/120Hz HDTV. The 120Hz HDTVs aren't really 120Hz, they can't accept and broadcast a 120Hz signal, they take a 60Hz signal and interpolate inbetween frames to make motion look smoother.

the only way you will get it to work is if your monitor or tv is on the list of supported hardware on the 3d vision main page.

I can say for sure, don't expect 3d on a display unless it clearly states that it is a 3d ready device. You will waste the money. They may take 60hz in, but have super slow refresh at the panel level.
If you are getting into it now, you have the bonus of the second gen 3d lcd displays out if you can afford them. I have a samsung 2233rz with a gtx260 and it is a very solid solution. I have done 3d for over 10 years and it was murder in the old days just to get the drivers to work. Now, if you get an approved nvidia card, display and glasses, it will be as pain free as it gets. It isnt cheap unless you needed a display and video card anyways.

System:
Intel I7 920 overclocked to 4ghz
Asus Rampage Extreme II
2 Ge-force 480 in SLI
GTX 295 PhysX Card
12gb ddr3 2000mhz ram
Intel SSD in RAID 0
BR RW
1000w Sony surround sound
NVIDIA 3D Vision
3d displays tested:
Mitsubishi 65" DLP 3d HDTV (good old 1080p checkerboard since 2007!!!)
Panasonic VT25 (nice 2d but I returned it due to cross talk)
Acer H5360 720p on 130" screen (the best 3d)
23" Acer LCD monitor (horrible cross talk- sold it)
Samsung 65D8000
If you are getting into it now, you have the bonus of the second gen 3d lcd displays out if you can afford them. I have a samsung 2233rz with a gtx260 and it is a very solid solution. I have done 3d for over 10 years and it was murder in the old days just to get the drivers to work. Now, if you get an approved nvidia card, display and glasses, it will be as pain free as it gets. It isnt cheap unless you needed a display and video card anyways.
