Will this Samsung 3D TV play 3D games from my computer?
  1 / 2
I'm interested in this 3D TV: http://www.samsung.com/ph/consumer/tv-audio-video/tv/plasma-tv/PS43D490A1XXP

It comes with an Active 3D Glasses. If I plug my computer (with a GTX470) through HDMI, can I play 3D games through the TV and the glasses that come along with it?

Hi,

This 3D TV should be supported, but since its version "A1" I would contact the manufacturer and ensure it uses the same EDID, or contact us with the EDID info and wait for us to add support for this TV specifically, you can always find all the supported devices on our website as well.

Actually when I asked the shop for a specific model, they stated "PS43D490" (which is also listed in Nvidia's Supported 3D TV's list that you link). But when I tried searching it in Samsung's website the only thing I saw was the "A1" version (might be a region issue since I'm looking at the Samsung PH website?). So I guess I'm all set since it's clearly supported. I'm now really excited! Can't wait to play Skyrim, BF3, and Arkham City in 3D!

Yeah, most likely region specification, seen this with quite a few models. Also seen revisions to the model and using that as a version, which sometimes leads to different EDID's.

Franz,
It's a shame that people generally don't consult this forum before buying a TV. To your credit, you seeked advice before buying.
What Josh forgot to tell you is that this particular samsung 3DTV is limited to crippled 3DTV Play with it's ugly low res scaled 1280x720 images. The truth is, most of the 3DTVs used by regulars in this forum are conspicuously missing from the 3D Vision 'requirements' page even though they work perfectly with 3D Vision. These TVs are checkerboard mode capable samsung TVs, plus Mitsubishi rear projector.
In 2010, all samsung 3DTVs supported CB. In 2011 samsung all but abandoned CB mode, the D7000/D8000 LED models being the only samsung TVs that retained this great feature, plus six other valuable 3D modes. 3D Vision supports CB mode which is 1920x1080 native resolution at full 60 Hz framerate, which is why you need a CB capable samsung or Mits.
Check out this link to understand what people think of both 3D Vision and nvidia's 'ugly stepsister', 3DTV Play:

Yes, but not just because of low resolution, it's worse than that. This particular TV works only in frame packing mode which is optimized for broadcast video. Every optimation that makes broadcast video look better makes PC Graphics look worse. That's why people who 3D game go for checkerboard mode. 1920x1080 res and PC Graphics optimized.

Roller is the man to listen to for sure, but here's my 2 cents.

I have a vizio passive tv. Honestly, even tho I'm used to the higher quality 3d vision, 720p on my tv actually looks pretty good. Can't even tell that it's been upscaled. Apparently my tv does a real good job at making 720p look as close to native as possible. Crank up the antialiasing, cheap glasses for the whole family and then some and it looks great to me! It doesn't do CB, but does FP,SBS,TB,Sensio. Plus 1080p sbs looks as sharp as ever to me. Been buying up the 3d blu-rays. /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Take a look at some passive TVs as well. Always a good idea to try and look at all different kinds, do a bit of reading and research on what fits your needs.

But Nvidia 3D Vision doesn't support SBS, so you need CB to have 1080p60hz.

You can try the demo of 3DTV Play, which is what you'd be buying for 3D, not 3D Vision, which is free in case you didn't know.

I agree with Acidbon, 720p isn't that bad and i prefer it over 2560x1600 in 2D in most games. Consider using Tridef instead as they support SBS which offers a little bit more detail. Nvidia says they will support SBS eventually but a lot of people including me have our doubts about this happening at all.

It would be nice if Roller could provide a link to support his claims about frame-packing deteriorating the image.

I would love to provide a link, but samsung does not document these two different modes anywhere except in the owners manual.

The thing is though, I'm not the one buying this TV. My Dad is. He is buying it because of the nice price. The main thing we are after anyway is watching 3D movies, not gaming. I just thought I would try gaming on it IF it is supported. It's not really a deal-breaker if 3D vision won't work.

I would recommend you get a Sony Playstation 3.

I'm a Gran Turismo fan and bought one for that reason, turns out it plays Blu-ray 3D movies as standard.
That will give you easy 3D movie play back as well as PS3 games that are 3D (GT5, Motorstorm, CoD Black Ops, Killzone 3 to name a few)
(To get the PS3 working for 3D (after connecting to TV) connect to the internet and it will automatically look for updates, after updating it will playback 3D blu-ray movies)

This will give you and your dad 3D movies and some games to play in 3D straight away and as for the PC stuff, there's a lot more games, but it takes more time and tweeking to get them to work. Approach the PC 3D stuff as more of a long term project.

Just have in mind that playing 3D games in PS3 is something that can't be compared to 3D Vision or 3D PC Gaming. If there's a considerable difference in 2D gaming between PC and Consoles in terms of graphics and quality details, you can bet the 3D difference is even greater between the 2 platforms. I've played GT5 in my friend's PS3 in 3D, it's OK, but depth and convergence settings are very limited and the 3D graphics at all don't look even close to the effect you would get with 3D Vision or 3DTV Play.

Well, I too recommend the ps3 for light gaming and 3d blu-ray playing. However, if your dad doesn't have much experience in 3d or gaming, he'd probably be just fine with a passive 3dTV. Glasses are cheaper, and many pairs can be had for multiple people viewing the tv for cheap. Heck, Best Buy has 6 packs of RealD glasses for 25 bucks, which work with passive tv's. My model is the Vizio E3D470VX Theater 3d. It's under $800, and to me is quite a nice set.

whoa whoa wait... GT5 not good 3d? I've been playin GT5 the past couple weeks on my new 3dtv, and it's stellar! you have control over depth AND convergence! It's in the options. Hell, one setting I tried had even more depth than 100% on my 3d vision monitor (having told ps3 i had a smaller tv as well)! Try Uncharted 3. 3rd person 3d gaming and depth just as good as anything out there. Not to mention the game is just plain awesome. I'm personally looking forward to more 3d ps3 gaming. /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
