It's still is up to developers to implement proper 3D with their games anyway. Unreal engine 3 has been supporting 3D for some time and works great in games where developers put the work into it, like Batman:AA and Batman:AC. Unfortunately many games require HeliX's magic to make it work properly in 3D, like Dishonored does. I am hopeful that Unreal Engine 4 will still have 3D support since UE technology is utilized by some many developers.

Yeah, that's a sad thing. If DirectX were supporting Vista and above, I think it would make it so the developers could just do that and have S3D work on 3D Vision, AMD, Occulus, and whatever else is out there. With XP already fading away (especially for people who have S3D hardware), we would be good to go. But with it only on Windows 8 and with Windows 8 being clearly targeted at touch screens (which I can't imagine supporting S3D), I doubt developers will be even slightly interested in trying to use it. They will be stuck with what we have now. Ah well, good news for the folks over at DDD I suppose. A big loss for the folks at Microsoft that worked on a feature that probably won't end up getting used for, oh, another five years or so.

That's why after Windows XP i stopped to support that shitty companny, after they had exclusively included DX10 only in WIN_Vista. Just to boost shitty OS sales :( Now they try to do same thing here. Why alwayes we gamers have to pay for this? Why not those FLASH porno junkies have to pay for having an native FLASH support in Windows_8 or something like that....??? :)

DX10 was a pretty big deal. It changed the architecture of the API so it could switch to a software mode if the hardware wasn't there. I think that's also when they did the memory sharing thing that lets video memory overflow use main memory. That kind of thing would likely require OS support. Putting DX10 on XP may not really have been possible at all. And why should they? We got SEVERAL big updates for DirectX for free down through the years. And DX10 got updated to DX11 on Vista for free, too. But you're going to cuss them out for not giving you even more free stuff? What does your "support" for the company mean if you just want everything for free, anyway?

I will wait till windows 8 delivers as far as S3D is concerened but I really dont understand why its a bad thing that they are trying to sell a feature that will benefit us on a new OS. As its been said its still up to developers if they want to support S3D, its just easier now and benefits the developer more since it will be "crossplatform"(amd/nvidia) compatible. That said I really see no problem with changing OS if they gave me a feature I really want. Thats why I buy things. If you dont like 8 and want the feature...just partition.

Yeah, the common interface for both AMD/ATI and NVIDIA (and anyone else that comes along, like maybe the Rift) will be great for the industry. The problem is, the developers would have to be crazy to use it. If Microsoft were to add the feature to DirectX 11 then everyone with Vista or higher (which is probably almost everyone with 3D by now) can use it. By putting it into Win8, they cut down the potential audience so bad that the developers will be able to support more gamers' 3D by just supporting one company's interface. So this is definitely a sad thing. However, getting all mad about it and trying to use it as an excuse to pirate Windows or some such is going way too far. Microsoft did work on this thing and, assuming they did a good job of it, they deserve to be paid for it. It would be really great for the industry if they would give it to us for free right now but demanding that they hand it over!? No way. I wonder if NVIDIA and AMD could use this API, though, to model their own interfaces? They will want to keep the current interface, of course, but maybe it would help if they could make additional APIs that look a lot like the one DirectX uses?

The day that games start shipping with exclusive 3d on windows 8 in huge numbers I'll care for windows 8, but I highly doubt it will ever happen, until then I'm fine with w7.

And honestly, when developers "officially support 3D", it usually results in no depth and almost no convergence. Almost makes you want them to stay away. Such conflict. If only they'd render things properly (so 3D vision worked), but stayed out of the locked convergence business.

I adapted from 7 to 8's interface very quickly, but 8.1 has changed stuff around again in minor ways and it was kind of annoying.

I looked through the API changes for 11.1, and I don't see any mention of S3D in there at all. It mostly seems targeted at 4K screens with lots of VM style texture map loading, ways to get around size limits. Based on: http://3dvision-blog.com/tag/directx-11-1-stereo-3d/ It seems to me that S3D support is actually part of Win8, and is not dependent upon DX11.1. It works on DX10 hardware, which precludes DX11 requirements. The reason I thought this was interesting is that it's the first time I've heard of MSFT being interested in S3D at all. That in itself is a tidbit of good news, and that we aren't dead yet. DX11 was released in 2008. !! We are just now seeing DX11 games as a requirement, although there were a few early adopters. That took 5 years! 5 years before even a fairly giant change from DX9, to DX11 took place to where we see it in the game market. DX11.1 is a pretty modest change, and even it is is big, we can still expect a 5 year delay before anything happens. I wouldn't get too worked up about a DX11.1 being Win8 exclusive.
