3D stereoscopic Options are not avialable after Update to Windows 10 17.9
2 / 3
While I found the options to work around this (using custom tools 3D Fix manager or Advanced 3d Vision config found in these forums or using the right click on desktop --> display settings (not nvidia) --> 3d mode enable), I just want to tell what enabled to successfully run the wizard without error "NvAPI_Stereo_IsActivated() returned 0 after stereo was enabled by default with Settings->setDefaultStartupMode(true)":
1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\3D Vision
2. right click NVStWiz.exe --> properties
3. go to compatibility tab
4. check "disable full screen optimizations"
5. click OK
6. run the 3D wizard
Unfortunately, it seems full screen "optimizations" is not the only thing Microsoft has broken. I tried disable it for some games that stopped working in 3d vision since the update but it didn't bring it back.
Unfortunately I discovered too late that something was broken and I can no longer roll back the update. There is an installer for the previous windows 10 build out there, but it tells me that it cannot downgrade my windows installation and essentially would a clean install without any of my files/programs.
If I have to reinstall windows completely anyway, I might as well go back straight to Windows 7.
Edit: Just discovered that "disable full screen optimizations" brings back 3d into Half Life 2. Might be worth a shot to try it on any game...
Thanks for this tip. I posted it on a few other threads on forums so people could try it. I did as you suggested and the 3d wizard worked properly. I did have to go to EACH game .EXE file and check the "disable full screen" box then I had to start game and use the keyboard command of CTRL-T to get 3d vision to turn on. It used to just turn on when I opened a game but it doesn't any more. However, finding the .EXE file is easy, and doing CTRL-T is easy also so at least for me 3d vision is working again using your information.
Thanks again.....

Another update:
I just found that in the 2 games where "disable full screen optimizations" did not help. (Fallout 3 GOTY and Black Mesa Source) I had Helixmod installed. After renaming the customized d3d9.dll to something else, it worked again.
So
- the full screen "optimizations" break 3D vision
- the custom d3d9.dll from Helix mod is incompatible with Windows 10 Fall creators update

What is your setup exactly ? I'm running Win10 FCU latest build with a normal 3D Vision monitor and I have no problems like that. I don't need to disable fullscreen optimizations and I've also tried Dragon's Dogma with the DX9 fix and it runs fine.

I'm still on Win 7 - registered (don't think I'll ever let it go, I successfully held out against MS free upgrade BS). If I ever do transition, I think it will only be to LTSB - the EU versions of Win 10 seem like a nightmare for PC gaming from everything I have read.

Wulf, does your monitor display over 120Hz? If so, that's likely the problem. Tell your monitor (or the game or maybe the NVIDIA drivers) to stick with 120Hz and you should be good. Whatever system NVIDIA was using before to set the max refresh rate is no longer working under the latest Win10 update.

My setup is a Toshiba Qosmio X875 laptop. The monitor refresh rate is set at 120hz. The problem I had was when I updated to Windows Fall Creator (I am on 1709, build 16299.125, i think it is) something happened where I couldn't get 3d Vision to work. When I tried to turn it on the screen would flicker and then freeze up and I had to use task manager to close it out. I was getting stereo driver default mode errors. I tried registry fixes and even the program that did the fix that bypassed the setup wizard but it still didn't work. The only way I could get setup wizard to work was by disabling full screen optimization. I did that and setup wizard worked properly and now so does 3d vision.

This stuff is highly game dependant. For example I never has issues in Kerbal Space Program. Maybe you just happened not to run a game before and after the FCU update that was broken by the update.

No, refresh rate is not the problem. My max refresh rate 120 Hz. I even used the Advanced 3d Vision Configurator found in these forums to enforce 3D mode to "always on", so the 3D mode LED on my monitor would even light up on desktop and stay lit up when I start a game.
However, in some of my games (Half Life 2, Black Mesa Source, Fallout 3 GOTY) the stereo mode would not kick in and the LED on the infrared transmitter payamid would stay dark green, no matter what I do. I even did resinstall the driver cleanly several times using different driver versions (like suggested elsewhere in these forums), using DDU first, unplugging the internet cable and then using the NVIDIA installer. Nothing helped.
The symptom always was the same (even if the monitor was already running in 120 Hz 3d mode):
- press the button on infrared transmitter (or Ctrl+T on keyboard)
- the game pauses for like half a second
- very shortly the view is shifted, like the game drawing one stereo frame
- then the game is back to normal mode and the emitter stays dark
It is almost like something else would turn off stereo mode off again as soon as it is turned on.
And of course I had the error message on running the official Nvidia Stereo Wizard discribed in the Original Post - hence I answered in this thread.
The only thing that helped in these games and the Stereo Wizard was "disable full screen optimization" and not using the Helix mod. If I do any of these 2, I get described symptoms again.
A visible symptom that would stay even after these steps: Nvidia Stereo Testing Application right eye flickers between left-eye and right-eye view if Antialiasing is turned on. Did not happen if Antialiasing is turned on in Games so far.
My Setup:
OS: Windows 10 Pro version 1709 build 16299.125
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad @2.66 GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 570
GPU Driver: 388.71 WHQL
Monitor: BenQ XL 2720T
This stuff started happening after the FCU.

This is quite interesting. After the Fall Creator Update, I had to tick the "Disable fullscreen optimizations" option to get the 3D detection to work properly in order to pass the Setup Wizard and play some games in 3d.
This works flawlessly for certain games like Batman Arkham Asylum and Final Fantasy X/X-2. However, like wulf_21 mentioned, there are some games that no longer work (such as Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2) which either crashes or not run in 3D.
According to https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/645ukf/windows_10_cu_fullscreen_optimizations/ , it sounds like MS made some massive changes to DirectX to enable borderless-window gaming that tries to run smoothly like exclusive-fullscreen mode.
This is just speculation, but maybe MS created some sort of wrapper that is messing up how 3D vision interacts with DirectX (~_~;)

Now that the holidays are done, maybe we can see some movement from NVIDIA on fixing (or working around) this issue?

From the release notes for 390.65:
Fixed
[Notebook][Fermi GPUs][3D Vision]: Error message pointing to the Stereo driver appears when enabling stereoscopic 3D. [200362512]
However, I don't even see any mention of the problem between 3D Vision, >120Hz monitors, and the Fall Creators Update for Windows 10. I thought this got registered as a bug!?

So today for the spectre and meltdown updates I realized that I was actually not running the Fall update after all. Which will be because I forced windows to defer to a year, but I thought it had already been applied. Having little choice due to the Intel debacle. I forced all updates and was met with similar issues to you all. However.
* Installing the latest 390.65 driver resolves the missing 3d options and wizard problems.
* Playing around with the "disable full screen optimizations" tends to get things going again as mentioned.
Now Wulf 21. Kaimastas post gave me a clue
I fired up Dragons dogma. Still works fine.
Tried guild wars 2..... Crash on start up.
So I took the D3d9.dll from DD and put it in the Guild wars 2 directory and it started working again.
But the fix was not actually being applied. I think it may be the DD is 32 bit though and Guild wars is 64 bit.
It might just be certain versions of the helix dll. When I get some time I will try all the different versions of the 64x one.

Windows "creators update" should be read as "beta update" - it is like a regular fast release version of fedora/ubuntu that includes new features to incentivise user testing. v1709 should come with a disclaimer saying that it will break an existing stereoscopic 3D system.
The following updates were required for the 2017 fall creators update on Windows 10 x86_64 (144Hz monitor, Nvidia geforce driver 388/390);
Many games (this is not a universal fix);
- right click on primaryExecutable.exe - properties - compatibility - disable full screen optimizations
All games that require a modified version of d3d9.dll (this is not a fix, merely a workaround which might prevent a crash upon start);
- optionally rename d3d9.dll/d3d11.dll to d3d9renamed.dll/d3d11renamed.dll

The 3D Vision community is too small for NVIDIA to pay much attention - no way is Microsoft going to worry about it!
It would be nice to get a little update from NVIDIA, though. I'm worried after the last update had no mention of the issue at all in the release notes. Those *do* have even small issues listed off in them.
