Juciy Bits 3D Camera Software How to shoow 3D Photos with your iPhone
I found a really cool piece of software today called 3D Camera from Juicy Bits.

What it does it allow you to easily shoot two separate views and then save them as a stereogram JPEG file with left/right eye information. While its not perfect, its a great way to get started.

Here's my workflow to get images that you can view with 3D Vision:

Obviously first purchase and install the software on your iPhone.

Next launch the software and take a left eye and right eye view (their overlayed grayscale view was really helpful to line up the images). Also, if you have an iPhone cradle, use it! It helps to maintain the correct position for your two camera views.

By default the image type is a side/side image. From the menu of the application that is the "Stereo" option.

Now you can either upload your JPEG to Facebook, Twitpic, or save to your album. Do whatever is convenient for you to get that photo to your hard drive for the next step

Save the photo to your hard drive

You may need to rotate your photo counterclockwise now. I found that if I uploaded to facebook first, then download the file I didn't. But if I saved the picture to my album then downloaded it to my computer it took this extra step.

Rename the extension to .JPS. This is a stereo JPEG file extension that the NVIDIA 3D Photo viewer recognizes and lets you view photos in 3D.

You also need to tell them to hit CTL-W in the viewer since the image is reversed normally! We have to get them to fix it.
I attached a sample photo to this thread, just download and rename to .JPS and see what you think. And before you ask, yes I am not a very good photographer!

Nice photo, Andrew, and thanks for posting! I wondered if the "swap" button in 3D Camera would help with your situation. Pressing the button will swap the left and right images, effectively turning a "parallel view" image into a "cross-eyed" image (or vice versa).

We're working on a bunch of updates for the next version, and of course, it will be a free upgrade. You can read about some of the features in the comments we left on the TUAW 3D Camera review from this morning.

We're always looking for feedback! Thanks again!

I've just tried the application on my iPhone (had plans to do that for quite some time) and here are some toughs from me.

The app works great, but I'm disappointed by the fact that when you save the final stereo image it is with very small resolution - just 610x40 pixels and when you view it on the screen of the PC it is just too small to see almost anything... let alone to achieve good 3D stereo effect (although it is just fine on the display of the iPhone)... at least in anaglyph when seen with red-cyan anaglyph glasses.

The other thing that I believe should be considered is the rotation of the images... when you take photos in normal position of the iPhone (not in landscape) you have to rotate the image afterwards, otherwise if you just try to play it with a stereo image viewer you'll see it in a "quad" mode. Everything looks just fine after you rotate it, but this should be made automatic... especially having the ability to detect the position of the iphone.

So in short: higher resolution stereo images when saved and autorotation of the images by the app.

Thanks for trying the app and for providing feedback, Bloody. Without going into too many technical details, the iPhone rarely has enough free memory to manipulate three 2+ megapixel images at once (left image + right image + blended image). As an unfortunate side-effect, the images have to be sized down a bit to fit into memory. Version 1.1 sizes down to 800 pixels in the largest dimension, and if you save the image to your Camera Roll and sync it with the computer, you'll get the best resolution. If you send them via Facebook or Twitpic, both services have their own size limitations, and it sounds like you've hit them.

The good news is that we already have an update in the works and running on our development phones (including a new 3GS) that will help to alleviate the maximum resolution issue. While we don't think three full-resolution images will always work, we'll give the user the option to try. In the worst case, the app will simply exit back to the home screen. In the best case, everything will work just fine. However, sending the images through Facebook and/or Twitpic will impact the dimensions/resolution.

We have a long line-up of features that we'll be adding in future releases, and of course, those updates will be free to owners of the app. Some of the features we're working on:

Re-alignments of images by dragging with your finger (already working in development)

Ability to save wigglegrams as animated GIF images (half working in development)

Ability to e-mail images as attachments

Flickr upload support

Image sizing (as mentioned)

Control over the stereogram black borders

Option to auto-save camera shots

Toggle for intro screen

Support for landscape images

Support for JPS/PNS (Andrew has offered some pointers)
We're not saying that all of these features will be in the next version (unlikely), but we will release them in sets over time. We really appreciate the feedback you've provided!
