Neil Schneider came straight out and asked Palmer Luckey the $64,000 question, regarding Oculus's current view on nVidia's push to incorporate any specifically developed 3D Vision drivers that could theoretically work with nVidia's library of 3D Vision games using the Oculus Rift. The answer he received seemed pretty unequivocal at this stage. From about 5 minutes in.

Not sure what others make of this. At least it can be said that nVidia are still actively trying to promote 3D Vision again at the present time. I'd like to think that everyone's prompting here had something to do with that. I'm hoping that someone at nVidia might also have been interviewed during the Oculus Connect conference for their own take on this. Maybe it'll be uploaded in due course.

Haven't seen it. Should be interesting to see. But think it's going to be a pretty terrible experience.
I recommend watching the video though. Nice interview.

I guess I kind of understand where they're coming from, but stupidly hope some of these things can be minimized with a good conversion suite. If even the older racing sims + pinball are playable on it, I'd consider it a success from my POV. But I can see a lot of potential issues that would makes things an issue for certain genres. We'll see. It'll certainly be better than any of the alternative options currently available. The bar is pretty low in that regards.

He thinks nvidia transferring their nvidia 3d vision games library over to virtual reality will be a terrible experience.
3D Vision does add a lot of latency, I notice it in Grid autosport, street fighter, battlefield, any game requiring quick movements!
I think what he wanted to say was, Nvidia can't even play a 3D bluray never mind make games work right in VR!

nothing new, he's always said that VR should only have native support. I disagree, some of the best experience I've had with DK2 are games like Dear Esther and Bioshock 1 and 2 with Vorpx, so for me 3D Vision support could be potentially amazing. If Nvidia does it correctly, I'm more than ready to go Nvidia only for many years.

That's a big 'if' right there!
If I could watch a 3D bluray
If I could watch a film in 24p without having to disable stereoscopic 3D in the NCP everytime.
If we have native 3D and not fake 3D
If they would support HDMI 2.0 TV's and have a higher resolution than 720p now the bandwidth is available
If they would hire helix and the likes to fix the games
If they would make an intuitive interface so it wouldn't put off 98% of the people who like 3D but can't be bothered putting 1/2 hour of setting up in before you play a game (or watch a 3D film these days)
If indeed!

*If* they are planning on bringing 3D vision -> Oculus [VR].
There are like 5 games on 3d vision that *could* be applicable to VR [like battlefield 3/ battlefield bad company].
Helixmod has many games but still like 20-30 maybe.
------------------------
*If* they are planning on bringing 3d vision -> Oculus [3D]
That could be done... problem is there are limitations of device.
Basically converting a game to Rift[VR 100-110 fov] costs 1/4 of the screen. Can't be avoided. Its for magnifaction/high FOV. Like eventhough your using a 1920x1080 your only using 1680x1050.
Converting a game so its just 3D [3D FOV like 60-80] will cost even more of the screen. Cause your basically watching a TV within your Oculus.
The best solution is VR MODE | 3D MODE. Where VR mode will use the full screen available for high FOV VR content.
3D MODE uses less of screen to provide an imax like experience at the cost of pixels.
I suppose they could prove me wrong but in my head this is how it has to be. It sounds like Palmer thinks the same. If they are building for VR and claiming they are bringing library over... Games like Witcher 2, batman, etc. Like Vorpx needs edge peak even for games that are *good* for Rift. Thats a hassle, games that arent good for rift are just a hassle and not even a good experience.
They really do not want them advertising that cause its bad for business when people walk away with bad experiences.
I am willing to be open minded but as far as I know this is how it is. Would be interesting to be proven wrong.

Tried a couple of my current faves using VorrpX. Aliens: Colonial Marines and Skyrim. I can stomach enough convergence to make most people go cross-eyed in stereo 3D, but the VR motion sickness really got to me in those games. Maybe it's a hit and miss affair with VorpX. Great concept, and cleverly done, but so far the content's not doing much for me at the moment. Haven't tried Bioshock yet though. I can see where Palmer's coming from, albeit in my own brief experience with a third party renderer. It's the fact that nVidia's being met with a cool reception at the moment with 3D Vision. That's disappointing. Puts more pressure on them to deliver. Just to make clear, I'd love him to be proved wrong.

I've had the DK2 for a while. One of the interesting apps for it is the virtual desktop. Basically puts you in front of a very large screen that is your desktop. Like you are looking at a massive monitor.
If they could apply 3d vision this way it would be amazing. Just think of a precieved IMAX size 3D vision montior in VR.
Another BIG "if"

But the big problem is.. you will only be using like 2/3 of the screen.

Should check your frame rate. I think the biggest problem people are experienceing is low framerate. There is a reason 75fps is what they are building device for and I dont think vorpx is nearly as optimized as far as performance as people think it is.

Eqzitara,
I had to laugh at your comment about being reduced to watching a TV on the Oculus. Oh the irony! As far as VorpX was concerned, I chose the nearest high fame rate setting of 93 and a bit. Can't recall if there was a 75fps setting to chose from. I was just glad to get the contraption off of my head. I'll try again though. Speaking of things stuck on people's heads, the guys at Valve have done a tremendous job with Half Life 2 and all of it's add-ons. So we at least know that it's possible. Valve did manage to mess up the 3D Vision setup for the entire Half Life series, in order to get the Oculus functionality for it up and running, so I'll forgive them. I kicked up a minor fuss on Steam about it, and some kind person fixed the 3D Vision setting too, so that was most appreciated. I'll try and get in touch with Neil and ask him if he interviewed anyone from nVidia during the weekend, if that helps. That's assuming he doesn't upload anything more beforehand.

I still can't get VorpX working. I have been trying for days now and countless hours and have never got it to work.
All the other demos work on my DK2 in extended and direct...go figure. I am ready for official VR drivers and will buy a 900series card if they support VR.
