Fujifilm FinexPix REAL 3D W1 Camera thread
  1 / 2
Hi

This is a new thread dedicated to this camera. Just some details to start with.

The camera is currently on sale in Japan. It is not for sale in the US.

This camera takes pictures in a new MPO 3D picture file format. Currently 3D Vision doesnt support this format, but it will soon.

This camera can take 640x480 3D movies as well. We will be releasing a new video player to support this format.
My initial impressions is that this is a very solid camera and a great way for people to generate their own high quality 3D content.

I am going to use this thread to post some picture samples in this thread over the next few days, so stay tuned.

That's great Andrew.

This may seem like a dumb question but does REAL 3D have anything to so with REAL D?

It's easy to misread if you read too fast.

Andrew, I read on your twitter that the camera actually has a auto-stereoscopic screen on the back.
That's very impressive to me. Do you know how they achieve that effect? I know some test screens (demoed at CES) have managed it but only with a very limited view angle (and I guess nothing more is needed for a small handheld screen) and could this be the case with the W1? I also know (heard) Spielberg / Dreamworks patented an auto-stereoscopic screen display tech where two outer layers have angled pixel filtration (one for left and one for right).

the camera's website says it's a parallax barrier display.
They have separate display that is lenticular but I'm not sure if that's LCD or for printed photos.

Thank you for the headsup, Andrew :)

I just ordered the camera via Ebay. Can't wait until end of September, when it is to show up in Germany.
And of course I hope that the format can be changed into JPS easily so I can view it on my setup :D

Cheers, Julian

I got the camera yesterday. It is absolutely amazing!
It requires a totally different way of thinking about photography....
But once you start managing your photos that way... Wow!

Sterephotomaker has a new version out that can read the MPO files and convert them to JPS for the viewer.
But of course it would be nicer to get native support in the viewer :D

Video is not supported yet, of course, here's hoping it will be done soon...

Cheers, Julian

I got it via ebay and just got the camera. You can see various sellers there. Mine (tokyotoyz) was very quick - took just 5 days.

Somebody that has the camera already care to share some pictures with the rest of us... ? ;)

Finally found a review of the camera with some sample MPO files to work with: http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news_details.php?id=18666
The review these guys did is far from perfect and being thoroughly done, especially the 3D capabilities of the camera (this is its main focus, right?). Anyway, image quality does not seem to be great, but you cannot expect to get DSLR-like results from such small S3D camera anyway. I've found a way to convert the MPO files into Stereo JPEG (JPS), preparing a guide at the moment and will also share the converted sample MPO stereo images, but the camera has been moved too much when shooting the 3D images, the two frames are much too distant from each other and I'm having trouble forcing my eyes that much :P

And for the guide: http://3dvision-blog.com/how-to-convert-mp...ps-stereo-jpeg/

Here is a nice gallery of stereo pairs taken with the Fujifilm W1:
http://gadgeter.jp/bbs/file/1_0.html

That guy converted the MPOs using the Japanese version of StereoPhoto Maker (freeware).

I have also written a small program called MPO2Stereo that will convert the MPO files into standard JPEG stereo pairs.
You can download that here:
