Thoughts on consumer version of oculus rift?
  2 / 15
Ok, since no one is saying it I will say it. This goes for me and I bet other people are thinking the same thing: The price - Is not the price that turns me down. I recently (last year) bought 3 new 27" Asus displays for my Surround rig. The monitors alone were close to 800£ (don't know in dollars). Why? Because I wanted to change my 3x21" displays of 5040x1050 with 5760x1080 and 3D Vision 2 (Lightboost monitors). Why I did it? Because I already KNEW that we basically can play any DirectX 7/8/9/10/11 and OpenGL games OUT THERE in 3D. We don't have a fix for every game and such, but the POTENTIAL IS THERE. So... VR: - Price 600 USD (don't know in pounds, but probably around 450£ since 600 USD gets converted to 600 Euro and 600 Euro is 440£). But, what can I play? 2 Games? of which NEITHER interests me? Can I play any DirectX 7/8/9/10/11 game ever created ? or even make it render with VR? UNKNOWN. What about OpenGL? UNKNOWN! What about all the games that we fixed for 3D Vision so far? UNKNOWN!!! Does Oculus offer any type of open drivers to at least allow us to make a wrapper/hooker for other games? UNKNOWN!! Do existing 3D Vision Ready games work with Oculus VR? Unknown again... So basically, I buy something I have no idea if I am going to use or not except for a couple of games! I bought 3D Vision in 2010 EXACTLY for the fact that it contained a HUGE list of games and 3D Vision Automatic worked (more of less on ANY game that I tested..yes shadows were broken then too in some games but most of them worked and are working to this date). I already knew that Nvidia had the public version of NVAPI and I figured you could do some stuff from their API to influence how 3D Vision is working and I knew shaders can be manipulated (I didn't know how to achieve this at that time). Even if there was missing information or things I didn;t know how to do/wasn't clear on them, at least I knew there is an opportunity to achieve this. Now, back to VR all I have are UNKNOWNS;) Without seeing what docs Nvidia offers (I know some of them are already available but didn't had the time to check them out) and with the limited support of games at launch is Definitely a NO-GO for me. However! If somebody wants to develop their OWN game/App (which I am thinking at some point) then I encourage you to PICK one up;) (from the academic/research/coding point of view). But as a "pure" consumer there simply isn't content (even advertised) to encourage me to spend that money.

Its not only limited support at launch which is acceptable to me. Its the "demo" indie games. Alot of these games which are tooted for VR... they just feel like a half a game.[And thats generous] I don't even need a LOT of games. Give me a game like Fallout, Mass Effect, etc. I am set for a month. It just feels like too many years down the line. Which is something I've said 2-3 years ago which is scary. ------------ Vorpx didn't really impress me and I would be amazed if people can play current gen games at reasonable performance on geometry 3D. Though its been some time since I tried it.

Of course! Valve is not stupid! I bet they even have plans for Vive on SteamOS!!! And if they do and they have a better support HELL even COMPATIBILITY MODE VR for all their STEAM games I will buy one DAY 1 even if the damn thing will cost 2000£. I find that type of investment WORTH IT! Like any regular software developer guy, I wake up go to work, get home sometime in the evening and if: - I feel like playing game X, I want to play it in 3D or VR even if is CM mode or whatever. - I feel like coding or working on a project, I work on a project - I feel to pick up a game and try to fix it in 3D Vision , or play with nvidia drivers, settings, profiles or any other type of software I'll do that;) I like to have the opportunity even if I don't have the time, because at some point I will have more or less time to do that thing;) Now with Oculus... I have like 2 games and as eqzitara said some indie games that are not even finished and are more like proof-of-concept than actual finished games. If Oculus would have been smart the would have contacted Creative Assembly and FINISH the conversion of Alien Isolation and RELEASE THAT ONE! The game was almost done anyway and some players managed to make it work with DK2 (at some degree). Also, I can't understand Nvidia... Why not use the Compatibility Method already present in their drivers and port it to VR for DX11? Sure, FAR from idea, but at least you would get more than 2 games on launch... To be frank, you can't say I am selling this at PREMIUM price but you get INDIE software for it!!!! and 2 normal AAA (more or less) games.... I am not a fan of sims in general. I am a fan of RPG-ish games (be them 1st perspective or 3rd perspective). Thus, nothing actually from the 2 games interest me... I understand not making a 3rd person game for VR but there are lots of awesome 1st person games out there already released that could have been ported to VR and be prepared for launch... Is like they are selling me at 4K TV that works only on Satellite TV, without a Satellite existing...

I don't think the casual market is lost. If you look at the sales for Fallout 4, something huge like 4x - 6x more console gamers bought it than PC gamers wasnt it? You can still look at the console VR sales to help gauge the casual market's want for VR. Also, 90pfs minimum? Are you kidding me? Im a hardcore gamer and i "can't" (and don't want to with my income) buy and maintain more than upper-middle systems. Try running DayZ at 90fps! Or newly release tech heavy games like Crysis. Unless Nvidia and AMD can ramp up processing power at the same price, which i bet they sort of can in some ways. I don't know, it might all work out fine. I wonder how much more thriving niche markets would be in general if wages were not so often based solely on how little businesses can get away with paying people, taking advantage of a surplus of labor that drives down prices (don't want to work for pennies? Well thanks anyway, we've got 6 applicants to do and they said so right on their applications). Less Lear jets and Yacht maintenance and more economic votes going towards Z800 (old VR device that didn't take off) improvement? I just am so glad people will finally see true 3D and get an real idea of whats possible with existing tech, what we all already know.

I've been waiting to see the retail price on the Rift, I really liked the DK2 and was expecting maybe £350-400. I finished work at 4pm today which was the time the pre-orders went live, when I checked the Oculus site on my phone and saw $600 I literally went "WFT????????????" and had to double check a few other sites to make sure I was reading this correctly. In the UK its £500 plus postage, its more than I really wanted to spend, but for a decent VR headset, and compared to the £950 I spent on the Acer Predator X34, its not actually all that bad. I've placed my pre-order, spent hours trawling forums and comments sections and I still have zero concerns - other than the fact Oculus really should have been more honest about the cost a long time ago. They have pissed off a lot of potential customers and they deserve the backlash to an extent, the irony is that £500 for the benefits of VR vs normal PC gaming are (IMO) pretty reasonable. I'm in the process of selling my Acer 4k monitor, Razer Hydra controller and DK2 on ebay as of yesterday, so I should hopefully cover the cost of the CV1 anyway. VR to me is possibly the pinnacle of gaming. I'm sure it will be more limiting than the choice of 3D vision games we have access to, but dogfighting in Elite Dangerous in the DK2 with my HOTAS was unforgettable, so was driving in Assetto Corsa with my Logitech wheel and pedals.
Its the "demo" indie games. Alot of these games which are tooted for VR... they just feel like a half a game.[And thats generous] I don't even need a LOT of games. Give me a game like Fallout, Mass Effect, etc. I am set for a month.
Might i suggest Soda Drinking Simulator?
Its not only limited support at launch which is acceptable to me. Its the "demo" indie games.
The problem so far is we had the DK1, then the DK2 and associated runtime prevented all the DK1 applications from running and it took time for more content to become available for DK2 - and the DK1 was pretty much shelved. Then we had multiple updates to the DK2 runtimes, which again invalidated a lot of previous content. Due to rapid updates most projects were abandoned, and the ones that were updated were pretty limited and most people lost interest while waiting for CV1. Now CV1 is here with a baseline runtime it *should* result in a lot of new content, and a lot of previous projects being updated now. Most shelved projects had comments from the authors/devs saying they were tired of doing updates just for the runtimes to invalidate their work again, I guess it's similar to CRC code being invalidated after some MMO games are patched and suddenly our 3D fixes need further updates. With VR still being so new it's not much of a surprise a lot of potential developers have been waiting for the CV1 before committing time and resources.

YOU'VE NOT EXPERIENCED THE MAJESTY OF SODA DRINKING SIMULATOR? I admit, i haven't tasted it's sweet nectar myself, but i hear its the most amazing soda drinking game ever. This and "work simulator" should be enough for any COD player.

Here is my big question. Why is Oculus only marketed to games? This is why people are balking at price. This is reason it became a landslide. They essentially marketed it as not only for gamers but an accessory. I mean seriously, it has 0 use if you don't have a high end computer. Seriously, Facebook BOUGHT Oculus for reasons they cited outside of gaming. Where is Baseball/football season pass? [ESPN/WHATEVER partnership] Where is porn industry? Where is mentions of concerts you can sit in on? Where is virtual tourism? This is how they "Messed up" to me. Why is it a gaming accessory? It should be marketed as "VIRTUAL REALITY". Not gaming accessory virtual reality. Sure we might buy it for that reason alone but ONLY if we know its going to be supported. People may laugh or scoff at idea of porn industry but. That could potentially be a bigger market then gaming. They spent 4 million getting the kickstarters free rifts but did not consider spending money by giving Brazzers free cameras. Blu ray vs HD DVD was decided by porn industry. You want to go head to head with valve for gaming platform? Good luck. Half life 3 might be a joke at this point but it would destroy them if they announce it will work on HTC VIVE but not Rift.
I've always planned that it would be "indie" for a time and then hopefully to pick up steam into mainstream AAA developers. But a part of my brain goes what indie developer will want to develop for a $600 platform with probably small user base. This is kind of against indies as I know them.
Just to give you an idea of the adoption amongst indies - this was at a local game dev meetup in August (mostly indies, some students, a couple of hobbyists, perhaps some of the AAA devs from the recently closed 2K Australia studio): http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/5/d/b/highres_440794267.jpeg IIRC 2 out of the 10 PC demos in that photo (not counting my own) were VR - one you can clearly see, the other was Mark's[1] demo at the back. There might be some more devs working on VR that didn't have a demo that day (there seems to be a lot of interest in it even from teams not actively working on it), but that's been pretty consistent in all the meetings I've been to. Hint: He's standing in front of an Alienware laptop and next to Mark ;-) Edit: This is of course before anyone knew what the consumer version was going to be priced at.
