Good By 3D Gaming and Regular PC gaming At least for now :(
Well time for me to say farewell to the world of 3d gaming, not because I want to just because i can't afford to replace me PC at the moment.

A few months ago my PC started to have hard lockups when 3d gaming. Video locks up or he display turns off because of a lack of signal, followed by stuck audio in the background.

First off I thought the issue was heat related since I was running 2 GTX 285s in a mid tower setup, however the temps never hit more than 85 degrees C and in some cases the freezing took place much lower than that. So after swapping to a bigger (but older) case I was greeted by more of the same.
So I tried various drivers, swapped where my 2 cards were plugged, reinstalled Windows 7 a few times and finally yippie Ihad a stable system. Well that was until Yesterday...... it all started again. Not knowing if the issue is my Vid card or my mother board, i really can't afford to upgrade to resolve this issue.

So for now I get to enjoy gaming on my PS3 if at all, the PC works fine for regular day to day stuff. my wife suggested I go to Microcenter yesterday and buy what I need, but i had to say no... trust me I really wanted to but the $3000.00 I would have needed to spend on a new build can be better suited for more important things.

Did you buy your cards used or from a company without a decent warranty?

The first thing I would recommend you to do, which you might have already tried, would be to try your cards individually, and in different slots. My Xbox 360 locks up as soon as I turn it on, and this is a gpu issue, but its obviously happening before the temps can rise, so sometimes it can be the gpu even though the temps are ok.

Another thing to do would be to go buy another card, test it, and then take it back as you will already know what the problem is.

Don't give up yet!

Those are PNYs - I'd definitely contact them about the problem. Theirs are as close to nVidia reference as they come, and will most likely be my next brand...

edit - couldn't let the spelling errors lie

you know I will say this, I was having some major lock-up issues myself. I tested my memory...9hrs of memtest no problems. I replaced the HD. I reinstalled the OS. Turned down my overclock to everything stock. Nothing to seem to fix it. About the only thing I didn't do was revert the drivers and the issue seemed to start with the 19x.xx drivers.

Well this new 257.15 driver has been working out very well. I haven't had an issue at all with these drivers. You may want to try them out if haven't already.

Have you measured the voltage outputs of your power supply ? )maybe it´s broken'
Take a visual look inside the power supply if you see any burned or loose parts

Try reinstalling your computer (hard- and software).
Also reinstall your bios
Let it run with only windows installed and the needed drivers.
Don't install extra sound cards,hd's or videocards etc..
Only run one game/or benchmark for a week or so,and see if it's stable...

Move on from there ,installing only one extra thing every week or so !

Thanks for the Advice guys/gals.

the issue appears to be hardware related for the fact it happens on two separate instances of Windows 7 with different versions of the nvidia Driver.
While I have not tried each card in the system by itself I have tried them with SLI turned off and Physx required games. In fact even with 3d vision turned off it happens (just takes longer). I've swapped the the cards position and slots. (Might be a bad dying motherboard, I hope that's the cheapest part of my system to replace). When my dad is at work I'll try each vid card in his PC (well it's my PC I built for his use) problem is the issue doesn't always happen right away, sometimes 5 mins in to gaming other times can be up to 1hr into gaming.

I will also open up the power supply and take a peek to verify what's going on in there.

Try taking out two sticks of ram , the memory controller of the original Phenoms is weak, and has a hard time supporting four dimms, also your not really utilizing the whole 8GB of ram anyways, 4GB is plenty, I would also check any overclock settings on the cpu and reset the bios to stock, you might as well take out one of the 285's too, that 9950 is a bottle neck on one of those cards and is completely inadequate for two. The psu would definitely be a culprit to look at also. what are the specs on the PSU?

So just to be clear, take out two sticks of ram and a video card and see how it runs.

Yeah I'll go home and pop one of the 285s out and 4 gigs of Ram (I'll miss them though). I guess I can drop the other 285 in my other PC. Maybe even get a 465 but there goes my hope of 3d sorround by xmas

Keep marching on m8. Don't give up.
If no suggestions work, you might want to consider this extreme method: buying item by item from a local store to replace a corresponding part in your machine and if it doesn't work you can return it until you figure out the culprit. For example, buy a new power supply to replace your power supply, then if it doesn't work return it, buy a new mother board to replace etc...

I hope it work out for you in the end.

So, as I understand, this happens only while gaming?
To me it seems like underpowered/faulty PSU could easily be culprit, as during gaming it's stressed most due to much higher power required.
For start, try to remove one GFX card, and see how it works with one (granted you did as previously said to check memory with memtest, and no overclocking).

How much watt is your PSU rated, and how much amps is it rated on 12V rails?

So I got home last night and went to bed. I had flashed my BIOS before I left for work, had a Checksum error on reboot which was fixed my loading the default settings.

Anyway I once again removed the 257 drivers and let Windows install the most recent Drivers them self (of course Metro and Mirror's Edge failed to start after that, I needed to do a repair on the Physx install). I played Metro 2033 for about 1hr with a single card no 3d and BLUR for another 1hr same single card no 3d (I did not remove the 2nd GFX card as yet, just didn't feel like getting into that tangle of wires). I went ahead and installed the Stereo Drivers and played a few without a hard lock. After my dentist appointment today I'll turn on SLI and see what happens.

I'm using a Corsair TX 750W PSU
