Tbh I din't think I would make about this but....
Out of curiosity and boredom I bought a 15$ Google Cardboard type Headset.
To avoid motion sickness and for increased pixel density I looked specifically for the lowest FOV I could find and this is 60 degrees. I wanted to get the the Baofeng Mojing XD but as I couldn't find it in my country I got the VR Box 2.0. From what I found on the Web Baofeng has better optics.
I have to say that the results are much better than I expected. With a phone that has 1080p IPS with 403ppi the pixels are barely visible and you can get almost the whole image in focus. As the image you see in front of you is very big and takes quite a big part of the field of view (expecially Vertical FOV) you still can get the nice motion sickness.
What is bad is the aspect ratio of the image, it is portrait not landscape. No matter what resolution I setup ( ex. 1920x540) to get a letterbox image, Moonlight always stretches it to the whole screen. So I settled for 1920x2160.
Using Trinus VR you can correct all this things but stream quality is low and motion is quite bad.
As the image you see in front of you is very big and takes quite a big part of the field of view (especially Vertical FOV) you still can get motion sickness.

Well using Nvidia's custom resolution, I can do 21:9/21:10 on most of my 16:9 Displays.
Example, on my 4K 2D TV, I PVP at 3860x1600, which gives me 21:9.
I go into custom resolutions, select manual and then set the only the display pixels.
Leave the active pixels set to whatever your native is.
But this only works in some games.
Thank you! This unfortunatelly does not work with moonlight as it streches the image. On the PC screen the image is leterboxed but on the phone ocupying the whole screen. The only thing i coud do was double the vertical resolution to flaten the image so it looks okish in SBS

I cannot imagine motion sickness on low FOV Projector, TV, HMD
As much as the image occupies your filed of view it is more likely for you to get motion sickness.

I just realized your trying to alleviate head tracking induced motion sickness... Sorry, i haven't used VR much outside of a GearVR demo. I can see that helping there, but i remember so many people saying that playing with a low FOV was causing their motion sickness, thats why i mentioned it. I've never heard of the opposite, that i can remember, speaking specifically of static displays.

Yes Low FOV (as well as TOO HIGH FOV) can cause nausea or motion sickness even in 2D when moving in a 3-dimensions computer generated world;)
Imagine this viewed in all 3 Dimensions;) Probably the sickness will be induced even faster...

There are two different kinds of FOV: actual field of view (in front of your eyes) and ingame field of view.
I my previous posts I am referring to actual FOV given by the display, in this case HMD, and not the one setup ingame.
Indeed low ingame FOV can also get me dizzy but never got nausea from a small screen.

Yes, I was talking about the "software" FOV not the "hardware" FOV.

That is why I use Surround for the hardware FOV;) OFC the Software FOV must match it;)
With just a single display I feel so "narrow viewed" ;)

In case someone is interested I found a solution for the aspect ratio.
There is a app in Googleplay called Screen Shift on which you just set an overscan for top and bottom and you get a proper aspect ratio and a huge 16:9 screen in front of you.
The only downside is that you need root for this app.
