Oculus Rift First Impressions

I'm also looking forward to Eqzitaras impression. Did it arrive yet? The res problem does sound rather horrible. There is hope though: http://goodereader.com/blog/e-paper/high-resolution-6-2560-x-1600-display-being-developed/ Fingers cross they allow us to purchase one with something like this in for a premium price. 1080 will be a great improvment, but of course we would preferably want much higher than that for a sbs massive fov device.

Promising stuff.
Promising stuff.

That is promising. I thought for sure they'd stop at 1080p for the mini-tablet market. That would definitely be ideal for something that halves the resolution and is filling 100 degrees of FOV. Anxious to hear Eqzitara's impressions too. Although I'm sure he's going to be harsh about the screen door affect. This is what caused me to cancel the DIY Kickstarter order I got in. Just knew it would be too big an issue for me. Just did the math on that. Assuming it was at 100 degrees, that would be the same pixel resolution per degree as the HMZ (20,500ish). Many can still see the screen door on that (I can), but it'd be more than acceptable considering all the other benefits. 1280X720/45 VS 2560X1600/2/100

2560x1600 is unlikely. Not many people have the power to render games with it. The rift is a mass market device so its going to use a more consumer friendly resolution. Im 95% sure its going to be 1080p and to be frank I think many are going to have trouble with performance needed on that alone. Its hard to remember but 3d vision is pretty tech enthusiast. Rift isnt going in that direction[which is a bit ironic] and frames per second is more important considering the side effects[motion sickness/loss of immersion/etc].

1080p wouldn't be a big deal for most Rift gamers. Don't forget that PC gaming tech will likely be much stronger in 2014/2015 than it is today. Current PCs only have to keep up with xbox 360 to be able to play all games. Next year's PCs will have to keep up with PS4. Huge difference. Forget about the fact that the PS4 specs don't seem so impressive on paper. It's 5 times stronger than the PS3, which means that the new baseline will be 5 times higher. Simple as that. And both nvidia and AMD will have their next generation of GPUs by then (REAL next generation, not like the gtx 7xx which are just tweaked gtx 6xx)

eqzitara, it's always possible they'll release an enthusiast model for those who want the extra visual fidelity, and who have enough hardware grunt to do so.

Interesting, but this is the typical absolutely abysmal journalism we get today. It has nothing at all to do with Oculus, isn't trying to be VR, and doesn't have head tracking. But aside from that, it's the same. :0 Seems like if it's an HMD it has to have Oculus in the headline to gather clicks. This display is really interesting, but it's directly comparable to the HMZ-T1/T2.

So can you use Helix mod with the vorpX software that is made for this? I ask because I see games like Skyrim are supported by the vorpX software but if the 3D is broken then what is the point?

Like all the renderer's 3d vision/vorpx/vireio have same issues. I *Think* tridef does as well. It has a depth buffer mode but thats not really what anyone wants. Helixmod is only usable on 3d vision.

Tridef puts quite an amount of work into fixing games and generally look way better than games through other wrappers (i'm not a fan of their z-mode though). Helixmodded games is another story though but i can not try that myself.

I'm not sure, but it seems to me that the Helix debugger should work in the VorpX environment too. The same basic principles are in place, and it acts as a DX9 wrapper, which the game is still going to be using. Any given HelixMod is not going to work, because the mod itself is specific to 3D Vision, and the driver heuristics. The original 3D glitches are specific to 3D Vision as well. So, in theory at least, a VorpX game will have different glitches in 3D, but it's possible they could be fixed using the Helix debugger.

It will be hdmi and with two screens it means it will be 1280x720@60hz tops. That design would of been great for a 3d vision device.
