Extremely unusual problem with Bioshock...very wierd Can't play Bioshock 3D now, all other games
1 / 3
Hi guys,
I used to play Bioshock in 3D with no problems at all until last week. A very unusual thing happened and I've given up since. In the level "Arcadia", as I was trying to pass a door, Bioshock crashed. I got a message saying the display driver stopped and recovered. I ran bioshock again, but everything was different from that point. The graphics of the game turned ugly even with maxed settings except the ones turned down for proper 3D. The security camera lights look double, slightly different angle for each eye. The 3D effect and depth is still there, but all objects in the game look double, one image being the object and another a dark shadow or copy of the object, which becomes more noticeable when objects seen in fog or dust. I still can't get passed that door in 3D, and the game crashes in other places that I never had problem b4. In 2D everything is alright. I need ur help if I'm missing something.
Here are some of the things that I tried:

Restartd the computer thinking the driver was not loaded correctly after the crash

Reinstalled the game, and the patches, but it didn't help

Uninstalled and reinstalled graphics and 3D driver ver 1.08, still nothing

Changed Bioshock settings over and over trying different things and making sure it was set as b4....no help

Changed different graphics and 3D settings from nVidia control panel
Here are some of the things that really puzzle me:

All other games look perfect in 3D as before, no crashes, so why just Bioshock?

If it's a game issue, why a fresh game install didn't fix it?

If it's a driver issue, why a fresh driver install didn't fix it?

If it's a 3D equipment issue, why other games work flawlessly?

If it was a GPU, monitor, glasses etc problem, at least one of the other games would have some problem.
Bioshock is now unplayable. Any help is appreciated.

not exctly the same issue, but with the same game.
i played it in stereo withut any problems, and it was one of the best looking games in stereo I have seen..
i was already through most of the game (after reviving ecosystem in Rapture) when it broke down.
i exited game just as usual, shut down the sytem.. and the next day when I tried to start it simply wouldnt work anymore.
first when I launched I noticed that the settings were changed (i was running everything maxed before) and when I tried to strat stereo - game crashed..
after that point I couldnt get it running even in fullscreen and settings wouldnt stay as I saved them.
tried all combinations of settings - it wouldnt help. reinstaleed the game, latest dx and in the end gave up and im playing other games instead now

I don't think that is actually an S3D error. i noticed something similar with Bioshock about a year ago, before I had S3d. Not sure if it was the game or if it was the regular video drivers. How does the game look in 2D?

Thanks guys for the replies. At least I know I'm not the only one with a wierd Bioshock problem. I tried a few more things just in case. I checked my hard drive for corruption but it's all good. I ran dxdiag and no problem with my GPU was diagnosed. I ran the Creative diagnostic utility to test my sound card. All the tests passed.
Bioshock runs perfect in 2D, but I'm so spoiled with 3D that I can't play 2D anymore lol. I get headache in 2D seriously.
There's one more thing that I'm going to do. I'll install a clean Vista operatiing system on my second hard drive, and test Bioshock with a clean windows. If the problem is still there, I'll assume my GPU is defective. I'm still under warranty (XFX card), so I'll ask for a replacement. It scares me to think going that far, but I'm determined to find out where the problem is.
Here's my specs:

Asus Rampage II Extreme mobo

Core i7 940

6GB Corsair 1333

Dual XFX GeForce GTX 285

Dual WD Velociraptor 300GB hard drives

SB X-Fi Titanium Fatality Champ sound card

PC Power & Cooling 1200W power supply

Samsung 2233RZ monitor
Any further help is appreciated
UPDATE:
I installed a clean windows, drivers, and Bioshock game, but the problem is still there. I also played for hours and looked hard into other games as well, and I found other games that have minor issues too that weren't there b4. Now it's almost certain that this is a GPU issue. Gonna call newegg and XFX tomorrow.

OK, so here's an update:
I borrowed a card (same GTX 285) from a friend, but it didn't fix the problem. If I disable "detailed shaders", the game doesn't crash, but the crappy graphics is always there. Now it's certain that this is not a GPU issue. It's not a 3D glasses kit issue too, coz the game crashes now in 2D as well. It could be power supply, memory, mobo, or monitor. I have a power supply tester so I'm gonna eliminate PSU from list tomorrow. The wierd thing is that Bioshock was absolutely perfect till last week; suddenly my system snapped. There're problems with Far Cry 2 and other games too. Also, the 3D laser sight is at incorrect depth in all games (was fine b4).
Here are some screenshots so you know how bad the games look. Rename to extension JPS plz

I tested my power supply with a PSU tester today, no problem. I also installed my GPU in a different PCI express slot, still no difference. I'm totally lost. Anyone any ideas?
To sum it up, here's what I did already:

Installed a clean Vista on different hard drive

Checked hard drives for corruption

Tried different drivers with matching stereo driver

dxdiag shows no problem

Disabled sound card, uninstalled audio drivers

Uninstalled 3D drivers, still crashes in 2D

Changed monitor

Tried a different GPU

Tested PSU

Ran memtest a dozen times, RAM is good

Changed PCI express slot

Checked for component overheating

Updated BIOS

Tried different settings in Bioshock and display driver

Changed wall plug
It's crazy. Do you think a malfunctioning IR emitter could cause this, though I have tried disconnecting the emitter and games still crash in 2D. What do you guys think if this is almost certainly a mobo problem. Just trying to gather some ideas coz I'm running out of ideas...totally lost. Appreciate ur help guys.

What you are describing does sound like some sort of HW failure in your system. Without having it on hand, its hard for me to pinpoint what the error is.

Have you uninstalled any distro prior to this happened? Could be a missing system or lib file that only BS needs. Could you try the game and the GPU on your friend's machine? BTW, what monitor are you using when this happened?

Thanks Andrew and distant for ur replies. I'm using Samsung 2233RZ. I didn't uninstall anything prior to that. Even a clean Vista didn't help. One night, just as I was playing Bioshock, suddenly the game crashed. After restart the whole graphics of the game in 3D got screwed (look at screenshots). 2D looks fine but the game still crashes at certain points that I can't pass (if high shaders are on). Great idea to check my monitor, Glasses and Bioshock with a different PC, thanks distant for that.
Also, do you think this could be the CPU? The Core i7 CPU has integrated memory controller, so if the memory controller is malfunctioning, then a CPU test isn't likely to reveal that. I'd appreciate if u guys can drop a line especially Andrew whose presence in this forum is an asset for fans. I've checked all other parts as described in prior posts except mobo and IR emitter (now thinking of CPU too). I also hear stories that RAM passing multiple memtests could still be defective.
Thanks

OK here's a major update to the story lol. I borrowed my cousin's PC and connected my 2233RZ monitor, 3D IR emitter, my G15 keyboard and G9 mouse. I tested Bioshock and the same problem. At least a sigh of relief that my PC is not defective. So that means it's gotta be either my 3D setup or Logitech inputs that's causing the problem. It's good that I've narrowed down the problem. I had no clue until now. But I do need your help to find the exact component among these four, and I do appreciate u r help so far.

I'm trying to put some ideas so that you can diagnose it easily. There's something unusual about my monitor. Whenever a game is about to starts, it shows a red warning mesage, but it disappears too quickly for me to read it. There's something with the glasses too, but I don't think it's a problem. When I charge it, the light stays amber forever. Before, it used to turn off as soon as charge was complete. The Logitech keyboard and mouse also have thier stories. There's a known bug with Logitech peripherals that causes the game "FEAR" to drop frame rates to 14fps or something. I have it too, and if you google it, everyone with Logitech device can't play FEAR even with the latest PC's. In order to eliminate the Logitech devices, I'm gonna borrow my cousin's keyboard and mouse, and install a clean Vista with Bioshock. In the mean time, can I ask you guys a favor. Please download the Bioshock screenshots above and let me know if u see crappy graphics, coz I wanna know if it's my monitor showing it that way. Maybe the images are fine.

Images are definitely crappy.
Glad you made headway. You could first just switch the logitech keyboard/mouse (no need for clean install) to quickly see whether that will solve the problem, only if it failed again that you should proceed with other plans.

I just installed a Dell keyboard and mouse, but the issue isn't fixed. That means it's gotta be either the monitor, or the IR emitter. I suppose it's not the monitor, coz if my monitor was defective, then the sample images I posted above would display fine on your monitors. But still can't conclusively eliminate a monitor malfunction. Wondering to know your opinions. And by the way, if Andrew is reading my post I would appreciate to know his opinion based on his experience. Also, Andrew, can you please give some information about the nVidia store RMA process. I searched all over the nVidia store but cudn't find anything regarding RMA, no phone numbers, no mention of RMA. I appreciate that.

It's a long shot but doesn't hurt: check if you have the following distro installed, if not download from Microshaft and install.
1- MS C++ 2005 redistributable
2- MS C++ 2008 redistributable
Also make sure to get the latest DirectX 9c distro. from MS. You may want to try to run it in both DX9 and DX10 versions if possible to see whether it made a difference.

I am curious about your mouse stealing away bandwidth or causing interference on the USB port.
Are you plugging in the emitter into a HUB with your mouse/keyboard?
Do you havea cheapo mouse to try?

Andrew:
I'm plugging all my devices directly to PC USB ports, not a HUB. It's a Rampage 2 Extreme mobo so I have 12 USB ports. I have tried 2 different mice with no luck, one Logitech G9 and another Dell mouse. I even tried them on different ports with a clean Vista OS. I've noticed that when launching a game, the monitor shows a red warning message, but disappears too quickly so can't read it. I had purchased the bundle directly from nVidia store just as it launched.
distant:
I checked and I have MS C++ 2005 and 2008 installed. I've also tried running Bioshock in DX9, DX10, compatibility with XP SP2 etc with no help. The wierd thing is that it used to work fine, suddenly passing that door, the game crashed and afterwards the graphics got messed up with no changes made to my PC prior to that. nothing installed uninstalled...just a crash and my 3D gaming was over.
Thanks for the help so far. Hope we find out what this unusual problem is all about. Maybe a crash in Bioshock permanently damages the 3D setup (emitter or monitor). Wondering if there's a "Reset to factory default" thing in either the monitor or emitter.

I used to play Bioshock in 3D with no problems at all until last week. A very unusual thing happened and I've given up since. In the level "Arcadia", as I was trying to pass a door, Bioshock crashed. I got a message saying the display driver stopped and recovered. I ran bioshock again, but everything was different from that point. i played it in stereo withut any problems, and it was one of the best looking games in stereo I have seen..
i was already through most of the game (after reviving ecosystem in Rapture) when it broke down.
i exited game just as usual, shut down the sytem.. and the next day when I tried to start it simply wouldnt work anymore.
first when I launched I noticed that the settings were changed (i was running everything maxed before) and when I tried to strat stereo - game crashed..
after that point I couldnt get it running even in fullscreen and settings wouldnt stay as I saved them.
tried all combinations of settings - it wouldnt help. reinstaleed the game, latest dx and in the end gave up and im playing other games instead now

To sum it up, here's what I did already:

Installed a clean Vista on different hard drive

Checked hard drives for corruption

Tried different drivers with matching stereo driver

dxdiag shows no problem

Disabled sound card, uninstalled audio drivers

Uninstalled 3D drivers, still crashes in 2D

Changed monitor

Tried a different GPU

Tested PSU

Ran memtest a dozen times, RAM is good

Changed PCI express slot

Checked for component overheating

Updated BIOS

Tried different settings in Bioshock and display driver

Changed wall plug
It's crazy. Do you think a malfunctioning IR emitter could cause this, though I have tried disconnecting the emitter and games still crash in 2D. What do you guys think if this is almost certainly a mobo problem. Just trying to gather some ideas coz I'm running out of ideas...totally lost. Appreciate ur help guys.

What you are describing does sound like some sort of HW failure in your system. Without having it on hand, its hard for me to pinpoint what the error is.

Thanks

Thanks

Glad you made headway. You could first just switch the logitech keyboard/mouse (no need for clean install) to quickly see whether that will solve the problem, only if it failed again that you should proceed with other plans.

Thanks
