3D vision questions for a potential buyer
  1 / 2
Hi,

Im interested in buying the 3d vision and samsung 2233RZ bundle but have a few questions.

1. I am aware of the ghosting issues on this monitor. Do they affect it while NOT in 3d mode?
2. Does anyone here have this monitor and NOT have the ghosting issues? And is it really THAT distracting?
3. How good is the monitor outside of 3d? I am currently using a smasung 226BW which is great.
4. I have a gtx 260 (with core i7 920). I know my framerate will be cut hugely but is it still worth it? Can always get a second gtx 260 to boost performance when I have the cash.

Thanks guys,

Adam

hi i got the same G-card as u and the same CPU

i7 920 2.66gig

GTX260

6 gig DDR3 triple channel RAM

samsung 2233RZ

all games that i played in 2d i can play in 3d with very little drop in framerate
if the game is running over 85 FPS u will have no trouble running the same game in 3d

list of games i been playin

MW2 - good in 3D no ghosting unless depth is taken over 15% , 2D full setting, 3D still full setting
HAWX - not good full of ghosting all the time any depth , 2D DX10 full setting ,3D DX9 full setting
NEED FOR SPEED SHIFT - has ghosting if 3D effect is taken over 10% , 2D full setting ,3D had to drop to medium settings
WOLFENSTEIN - works ok in 3D random ghosting at odd angles of view ,2D full setting ,3D full setting
DRAGON AGE - very little ghosting other then bright light areas ,2D full setting ,3D full setting
DIRT 2 - same as shift if i try add depth it ghosts ,2D full setting ,3D full setting
NINJA BLADE - very good in 3D small ghosting here and there ,2D full setting ,3D full setting
FALLEN EARTH - game has ghosting with depth over 10% ,2D full setting ,3D full setting
AVATAR - best game in 3D lol yes it has abit of ghosting at parts but overall hide's it well most the time ( i play this game most the time) best 3D game yet as it has the best feel of depth in any game i have played
only play in 3D full settings
ZENO CLASH - work ok but again it ghosts :) ,2D full setting ,3D full setting

so as u can see i run most the games the same as i did in 2D

i would hold off for now as new LCD's are coming out next year with 120hz per eye and 1920/1080 rez

1. I am aware of the ghosting issues on this monitor. Do they affect it while NOT in 3d mode? NO its a very good LCD in 2D but just OK for 3D

2. Does anyone here have this monitor and NOT have the ghosting issues? And is it really THAT distracting? some game yes the ghosting is really bad

If i was you , and if you can afford it, i would'nt consider playing 3D on anything other than a 3D projector.

There are numerous, but the best and most affordable ones are:

The Viewsonic range (PJD6211/6221/6381) and the new Acer H5360, which is 1280x720

3D gaming on a screen as big as your wall with pop out filling your room is something to behold.

Not sure why anybody would consider a 3D LCD over a 3D PJ assuming space is'nt an issue.

What games are you playing that has pop out.. really even setting my convergance to max without making my eyes go cross or watching the image split.. I have few games that really have anything POP OUT.

Batman has the floating notifications (like the scents that batman follows at certain story interfals)

Otherwise 3D gaming rules if you have a system that can keep up with the frame rate.. sabatour can lose frames like no ones business in 3D, Ninja blade can at times.. I need to drop my depth though on most of these games as I have the depth and convergance set to max on all of them. That might be my problem.

Well ive been playing mostly MW2 for the last god knows how long and if i adjust the depth to around 20 % or so and then up the convergence i get bags of pop out.

My character what ever his name, the fella with the gun, is almost on my lap....but i can get pop out on most games more or less.

I do have to be careful though as if you over do either setting i do get blinding headaches.

(I have the VS PJD6211 but as soon as i can source one on the UK will chop in and get the new ACER H5360.)

No, ghosting is a nickname for issues that are stereo3D only : the proper name is "Stereo Crosstalk" (a word you may already have seen in audio systems reviews. It is a phenomenon that happens when a portion of the image bound for one eye is visible to the other eye. It doesn't exist in 2D, where the word ghosting has a completely different meaning.
2. Does anyone here have this monitor and NOT have the ghosting issues? And is it really THAT distracting?
No
It is a limitation of the LCD pannel of the display and is caused by the slow response time of the liquid cristals inside the screen. The Samsung 2232RZ it is indeed very fast but still not fast enough for perfect stereo 3D.
Is it distracting ? it depends on the game.
As soon as a game shows bery strong bright and contrasty scenes, you'll get ghosting, and when that happens, then yes it is very distracting.
Among regular 3D users, ghosting is the #1 factor on which 3D displays are compared (before brightness, before colour accuracy, and even before response times).
Ghosting on the 2232RZ isn't exactly bad, but it isn't good either, it is easily beaten by DLP projectors or by the Zalman Xpol polarized display.
3. How good is the monitor outside of 3d? I am currently using a smasung 226BW which is great.
Difficult question. The 226BW was an exceptionnal monitor for it's time and is still kicks ass today, I know that because i am proud to own one and I still keep it just for watching and editing video. But it can't do 3D.
In my opinion upgrading just for the 120Hz isn't worth it, you have to play in 3D if you want to change your screen.
4. I have a gtx 260 (with core i7 920). I know my framerate will be cut hugely but is it still worth it? Can always get a second gtx 260 to boost performance when I have the cash.
I depends on the game. You should expect roughy 1/2 the GPU performance, which translates into 1/2 the fps unless the game has a framerate cap or reaches the cpu-limit (in which case you do not know what the actual framerate will be but nvidia loves to show these games to convince people the framerate drop isn't that steep).
From my point of view, I love 3D so it will prevail, if the GPU isn't good enough there is no way I'll play 2D : i will change the GPU instead.

Thanks everyone.

So the only really downer is the ghosting. Unfortunatly, there is a space issue and a projector is out of the question. Its also an xmas present meaning I only really have the choice of the samsung or the viewsonic.

Not sure if the viewsonic suffers from ghosting?
Thanks everyone.

Depends on the game. Batman, Avatar, Tomb Raider, Modern Warfare pretty much ghost free. Dead Space - unplayable. The good thing about the Viewsonic is the price ($250):)

I would wait until the next model comes out. I think its a great display, but it isnt up to the full 1080p resolution yet. I have the display and am assuming viewsonic or samsung will drop a 1920x1200 unit on us really soon. ALSO, there is an acer that is at least 1920x1080 coming out very soon, so that may be an alternative even if its not any "better" in quality.

I'm not too fussed about 1920x1200. Im on 1680x1050 now and its good enough for me.

I have the same gpu but a lesser system, e7200 at 3.2ghz and 3gig of ram and windows 7 64bit. Getting 3d vision was the best thing i've done in years. I too got the viewsonic monitor and i'm so far very happy with it and the resolution of 1680 x 1050 and getting loads of pop-out with most of the games mentioned on here already. I fail to see how upping to full 1080p will have that big an effect on the overall image.

That increase in resolution will also require increased hardware specs to maintain a good frame rate in stereo.
