I know 3dvision basically cuts my framerate in half, so im planning ahead. I'm going to purchase the best gfx card in my range (which at the moment is the GTX 275. A massive leap up according to toms hardware). My worry is this. Does the CPU have a very large part in 3dvision?
Im not the savviest person when it comes to pcs, but Im worried that my cpu might bottleneck my rig to the point that the 8800gt-gtx 275 upgrade will barely be noticeable, and ill get really crapty fps on 3dvision. Im not looking for running crysis on max (i dont even play crysis). Really, i dont care about running ANYTHING on max. I just want to have a smooth fps on whatever settings for most standard games after tweaking the graphics a bit. Will I be able to achieve this without upgrading my cpu for now? Am I worrying way too much? Or is it going to be a very big deal that i have such a relatively weak-ish processor.
Help very much appreciated. :) Also, super excited about trying out 3d on the pj, albeit also worried.
Hey guys. I recently purchased an Acer H5360 Projector (looks awesome) and I just ordered the 3d vision kit.
Heres the deal. My PC is basically at the minimum requirements to run it.
8 gigs ram (unnecessary I know)
Wolfram 2.3 Ghz triple core processor.
8800GT (512).

Generally 3D Vision is going to be far more GPU dependent than CPU dependent, so you should be able to make that upgrade and see the benefits. The stereo 3D driver does have some CPU overhead and you may not see as much benefit from the GTX 275 in games that are particularly CPU dependent (GTA4, AC2, Prototype, DoW2, Dragon Age Origins, BFBC2 etc.), but if I had to guess, you should see similar FPS in 3D as you would've seen in 2D with the 8800GT, effectively offsetting that 50% drop in FPS that comes with 3D Vision. Keep an eye on it though, if you have really low FPS and really low GPU utilization in 3D Vision then you may need to upgrade to a faster CPU to see the benefit of that card, but I'd definitely try the faster GPU first.

Thats actually exactly what I was hoping for. Im happy with my performance right now using my 8800GT in 2d. If i can match that performance in 3d with a 275, it'll be perfect. Thanks for the help.

I have a slightly more crappy cpu than you do (2.2 dual core-OC to 2.6) and with a 1G 250 gts i get crappy everything on the lowest settings. I use at most, ever, 60-79% of vram and never have come close to using all the gpu. Get a new AMD that plugs onto your board that runs over 3ghz stock and then oc if you want to be cheap.........perhaps a new 6 core (2.8) oc to 4 ghz @ 212$. I have given up on 3d gaming with the new titles, it just cant be done. If your thinking a new gc, go with the cpu then upgrade the gc when the 460 get cheaper and move the old gc to physics. IMO
