I feel sorry for you if you have a 980ti and are getting a 1080... When 1080ti drops just like on Maxwell the 1080 will become the worst price/peer card in the upper range lineup (excluding the Titans of course). The money lost on selling the 980ti etc is really leaving you worse off net than if you waited for 1080ti

The 1080Ti will come (soonest) next year as will the new Titan (based on trend). You have nothing to "feel sorry" for... We are talking 2-3 years (980Ti was launched LAST year in MAY, so until the new Ti arrives that is 2 years) when you get the best performance from the 980Ti. Plus, my opinion, you shouldn't get a 980Ti if you don't plan to overclock and watercool them to get all the juice from them;) The 980Ti as the Titan X is still one HELL OF A BEAST! that can push your 3D Vision displays to awesome framerates. (In Surround as for 4K, I recommend SLI 980Tis). Sure you will need SLI 1080/Ti for 4K/Surround as well;) If "you don't want to be the Alpha male" or "top of the pack" every year, buying a TOP END CARD (like the 980Ti or TITAN X) it will last you for a long time (3-5 years) until you will REALLY (performance) need to change it. Here we get into personal preference and what each individual believes is the minimum performance he can accept;) When I moved from 2x780Ti to 2x980Ti my performance doubled (200%) So, it was/is the best thing I did and don't regret it;) When the 1080Ti arrives and it will be equal to 2x980Ti then I think is a good time to swap;) Currently...not so much especially if you have SLI. Some might approve others will not. Again is up to your personal preference, what displays you are trying to push and if you want to always be "Alpha" or not;) Also Nvidia still needs to sell the 900 series hardware;) So, we never should expect something that is more faster than a previous generation. That is like "shooting yourself in the foot";)
I am sceptical if one 1080 really is so much better during normal gaming or VR gaming than my Titan X. It's a lot of talking at the moment and if only 20%, yeah not really interesting. I guess I will wait for sth like a 1080TI. Still fine with a single Titan X. Consider the weak consoles, almost no PC game needs at the moment this kind of power. Even the Titan X is bored like hell...
It will be needed for VR gaming for stable 60 FPS
