Why Generic CRT mode not available anymore with new beta drivers? 3D Vision + CRT mode has been ditc
1 / 3
Andrew Fear,
A lot of folks still uses a CRT monitor to play games in 3D so why did you guys decide to ditch the Generic CRT mode support with the new beta drivers. I'm still using drivers 285.62 WHQL and that driver offers Generic CRT mode, but I read that this mode is no longer available in the new beta drivers after 285.62?
I do hope you guys don't ditch DLP mode (checkerboard) as well, otherwise it would piss off a lot of DLP TV users that are loyal customers to 3D Vision products.
I have a Samsung 2008 3DTV and I really enjoy playing games in Checkerboard (DLP Mode) and also Frame Sequential (Generic CRT mode) as my TV offers this 3D mode as well.
I can say that it's great to play games in Generic CRT mode, I do only get 30fps per eye for 1080p, but it's way better than 3DTV PLay and it's lame 1080p24hz mode.
I don't understand how nvidia can remove CRT mode form their drivers. People have bought 3D Vision kits to do 3D on their CRT monitors, how can nvidia drop support after advertizing CRT capablity? CRT is fully developed so seems to me it requires alomst nothing to just leave it in the drivers, why eliminate it?

I'm still using a Sony FW900 CRT monitor beside others, and also very unhappy.
Have to stuck with the 285.62 drivers to keep support for this CRT for now.

Errr, "a lot" of people?? I think it would be pushing it to say that a lot of people use 3D at all, nevermind using it on an old CRT monitor.

There is no reason that basic 120hz shutter mode(CRT mode) should not be a permanent product feature forever. There is no technical reason whatsoever for removing working features except that Nvidia's product development people are all insane.
Do they actually intend to whittle down old or legacy features until there is nothing left? What do they expect us to open up the 3D Vision control panel and see only one big radio button that says ON\OFF? That would certainly cut down on the thirty bucks a year they spend on real technical support wouldn't it.
Just go back to giving it to us for free with no support whatsoever, at least then I felt like I was getting what my money's worth.

CRT's don't have the quality that they expect so they don't support than any longer.

Some people would probably disagree! Anyway, it's not about the displays, it's about the functionality. For example, I'm using CRT mode on my (3d vision supported) projector and that option's being taken away.
For whatever reason, Andrew has been inactive for ages and he never bothered to reply on the other CRT mode thread either.
Just in case he or a.n. other does read this, 3d Vision is the only reason I bought Nvidia cards and I can't wait for AMD to catch up because at this rate I'd jump ship without hesitation.

Yeah there was another lengthy thread about this, and I agree with some of the other posters here that existing functionality in the drivers should not be removed if that means breaking support for advertised features that people have come to rely on.
Personally I think it was a business decision and unintended consequence to close a support loophole on some of the competing unsupported monitors out there, like the newer Samsungs. While I can't fault Nvidia's decision to not support a competitor's product, I think its a bad idea to go about it this way if that means breaking legitimate product support. Best to just leave the fringe loophole/workaround cases intact and keep your core customers happy, imo. Hopefully this was just a lapse in judgment on Nvidia's part in a few Beta releases that gets remedied going forward.

Personally I think it was a business decision and unintended consequence to close a support loophole on some of the competing unsupported monitors out there, like the newer Samsungs.
