Asus VG278H vs PG278QR for 3D
Just bought a PG278QR but I'm quite disappointed with the lack of sharpness compared to my old VG278H. The PG278QR's 165hz looks much smoother than the VG278H 120hz, but in 3D both monitors are limited to 120hz anyway so it shouldn't make a difference. I don't have an emitter so can't test the 3D to be sure and I don't want to buy one only to find it really isn't an improvement (especially as they're over $100 now). Can anyone whose owned both monitors confirm if there really is an improvement in 3D? If it looks smoother without ghosting then it'll be worth keeping, otherwise I might ditch it and keep the VG278H, it's the ghosting I want to get rid of most. Is it also possible to get the VG278H emitter working for the PG278QR? They're both connected to the same PC so I shouldn't need 2 emitters. If you're lucky you'll find a cheap emitter sold separately on ebay. Another option would be to order the 3D Vision Kit from Amazon and send it back if you think that the monitor is not worth keeping it. Some people here in this forum said that the PG278QR is better in terms of ghosting than the PG278Q. So it seems to be the best or one of the best monitors for 3D gaming currently. I don't know if the built-in emitter also works for other monitors. As far as I know this emitter is connected directly via DVI cable. So I doubt it but you can simply try?

Yes I agree it's one of the best monitors for 3D. If not the best the original one had a slew of problems but they seemed to have it ironed out on the refresh. You are never going to find a perfect monitor at this point. This monitor does have ghosting in particular in high contrast images against a sky, I've yet to see a monitor that solves this problem really. You are going to be disappointed if you do not calibrate it right. But hey i am very picky when it comes to 3d quality and Masterotaku has this monitor as well and he is even more so, but seems reasonably happy with it. Any advice on how to calibrate it properly? I'm using it at 1440p (native) although I have tried 1080p and it's much worse (as expected). The VG278H has a sharpness option (1-10) on the OSD which makes a huge difference. At 0-5 it looks the same as the PG278QR. I'm astounded such an expensive and newer monitor doesn't have this feature.

I'm using it at 1440p (native) although I have tried 1080p and it's much worse (as expected). The VG278H has a sharpness option (1-10) on the OSD which makes a huge difference. At 0-5 it looks the same as the PG278QR. I'm astounded such an expensive and newer monitor doesn't have this feature.

- Default contrast is 50, but don't use that in 3D. Use 42 or 37. They are what you need to get a lot less crosstalk in bright color transitions. 37 is the safest, but 42 is good enough 99% of the time to not lose that much white point. - The Lightboost setting doesn't reduce motion blur like 1080p monitors, so leave it at maximum to get all the brightness you can. - Let the monitor warm up for 30 or 40 minutes before judging crosstalk. It makes a big different, like from bad crosstalk to zero crosstalk in some situations. It's a pity that the sharpness setting you wanted doesn't exist. The most you can do now is using ReShade or things like that to use it as a post processing effect. Regarding crosstalk, this is my opinion about the monitors I had: Asus PG278Q >>> BenQ XL2411Z >>>>>>>> Dell S2716DG

Yep that's about in line with how I configure mine as well. The default contrast is definitely really bad. I really don't notice crosstalk that much generally only if I look at black trees against a clear sky for example.

Yeah 42 contrast setting gives very good results for crosstalk. Sometimes you can set it even higher when a game has no high contrast scenes or mainly none.
