Actually, aside from how the disc is authored the hardware is identical. In practice 3D Blu-ray will probably be something in side-by-side or field-sequential format. So you should look for software compatibility. PowerDVD 10 is supposed to get 3D Blu-ray support in the near future.

If you try to play a Blu-ray 3D movie on a normal Blu-ray video player (software or hardware) you should see only the left frame thus a 2D version of the movie. This is a requirement for Blu-ray 3D to to have a backwards compatibility.
