I'll try to find Carmacks email address, and explain to him why 3D is so important, and that with his genius he could probably add 3D without too much trouble.
Is there anything Nvidia can do?

Nvidia 3D Vision Pro actually does support viewing Stereoscopic 3D with OpenGL, as a lot of professional developers use OpenGL more often than DirectX (simply because OpenGL is freeware and DirectX is owned by microsoft).
Note I said Nvidia 3D Vision PRO, the set you'll end up paying $700 for rather than $150 (though they had a price drop recently, did they?). But truly, the only difference between the Pro version and the commercial one is an extended warranty, better drivers, slight hardware differences, and of course, more compatibility.

Yeah there is something they can do - they can support OpenGL in stereo. They used to with the old drivers, just like they used to support DirectX7&8 and now don't.
Of course if they did there's no guarantee the id engine games would work well in 3D, it's quite possible the stencil shadows they use would be at the wrong depth.

So yes OpenGL stereoscope is available with Nvidia 3D vision... but it's for professionals only.
Though we should ask if they can still play those OpenGL games in 3D?

No, you still will not be able to play those OpenGL games in 3D unless they were coded in the software for Quad Buffered Stereo and you have a Quadro card.

There seems to be confusions about opengl and quadbuffered gl being the same thing. As Photios and i tries to tell it isn't. 3d-vision supports quadbuffered gl if you have a quadro card. You will inspite of that not be able to play opengl games in stereo unless they work in quadbuffered mode. I however missed that doom3 and quake3 supports quadbuffered gl and therefore should work with quadro card and 3d-vision.
I kept my old 7900GTX and winxp partition just to be able to play opengl games as well as older goldies like tombraider 2, avp2 etc (not with 3d-vision though). I just hate old compability being washed away since it draws a nice piece of history away too.

Yes same here. We've collaborated for a long time about the greatness of the 7900 GTX for old stereo gaming. Works just fine for me playing OpenGL games, and I'm hardly going to go out and spend money on a Quadro card just to play old id tech games in native stereo.
If id and company are not interested in complimenting the latest technological trends and themes, than I'm not sure why we should be excited about their product. id has been known for pushing the tech boundary, so to live up to that standard, they should be supporting stereo gaming for consumer users. The fact that id is now owned by Zenimax could create political clout for any kind of resolution. Just my speculation and two cents...

I grew up on id games. But sorry to say I will not be buying them due to no 3D compatibility. I just can not get the trill of playing any game without 3D effects. I just hope someone creates a wrapper or id does something to make their games 3D enabled. On the bright side Doom 1-2, Quake 1-3, and RTCW work in 3D so I'll have to settle for those games.

The main reason I am reluctant to try the 7900 GTX solution is because I want to play newer non-3D vision games in 3D.
To be honest, I have no interest to replay Doom 3. Already played that too many times in 2D. My interest is to play "The Dark Mod" which is a doom 3 mod which contains all new high resolution graphics and new fan made missions. Looks nothing like the original Doom 3. Right now, the dark mod is running on my overclocked gtx 580 at 1920x1080 8xAA 8xAF at 60fps (openGL in 2D) and gpu usage is 25-50%. I seriously doubt a 7900 GTX has enough power (and vram) to smoothly run this mod in 3D at medium to high quality settings.
It would be fun to replay a few old games in 3D, but only once or twice. Eventually, I will want to play newer openGL games such as Amnesia:Dark Descent and upcoming Rage, Doom 4, and maybe Prey 2. Quadro cards are expensive. I would buy a quadro card *only* if someone will 100% confirm which openGL games work in 3D and also confirm how they look in 3D.

It's not either/or here, but rather both/and. Do you have a SLI or 3-way SLI motherboard? If so, all you have to do is get a 7900 GTX in your other PCI-e slot and run a dual boot with Windows XP 32 bit as your second OS.
What? You think I'm gaming on a 7900GTX for modern games? I have two GTX 590's in quad SLI for that.
I have two machines to accomplish what I want my game old and new to be, but you can do it in one machine. Several people on this board are doing just that, that I helped. I have a tutorial on this board on how and what you need. If you are interested, search for it or you can pm me.

I don't know why you're blaming id for this. Remember 3D Vision is done automatically through the nvidia drivers and most developers put absolutely zero effort into making sure their games work well in stereo. They just write the engine the way they want it and if it happens to work well in stereo (usually because it's not doing too many fancy screen space effects), it's a bonus.
id have used opengl for a long time, and there's always been other developers using their engines and other games using opengl. Only way id could make their games work with 3d vision in stereo would be to include a D3D renderer and that's a lot of effort just for the few people running stereo. You would have to ask nvidia why they think it's not worth adding opengl support to 3D Vision. While you're at it, ask them whey removed DX7 and DX8 support, since I still want to play Thief 1+2 and System Shock 2 in stereo.

Iv'e heard from the devs of iz3d-drivers that opengl is a lot more complex regarding stereodrivers. There are numerous ways to create 3d-rendering and opengl have no really fixed standards like directx. In other words each and every game needs their own patch to work in stereoscopic 3d. It explains some of the unwillingness to support opengl. Walletwaving microsoft may also have an impact but i'm not sure.
However: Since nvidia did support some opengl-games in stereo with the old legacydrivers it's a riddle why 3d-vision doesn't now. As i see it the hard work is already done and the existing codes for doom3, prey etc could be implemented into 3d-vision quite easily.

ManuelG posted today in the thread for ETQW and whether OpenGL will be supported: "Not likely going to happen but for what it's worth, the current plan is to support 3D Vision for the game title Rage when it is released in October."
They've been keeping that one quiet... Will be awesome if Rage is supported in 3D Vision.

The main reason I am reluctant to try the 7900 GTX solution is because I want to play newer non-3D vision games too.

Well you definitely have a valid point. As someone who cut their teeth on Commander Keen & Wolfenstein 3-D, I understand your apologia for id.

However: Since nvidia did support some opengl-games in stereo with the old legacydrivers it's a riddle why 3d-vision doesn't now. As i see it the hard work is already done and the existing codes for doom3, prey etc could be implemented into 3d-vision quite easily.

They've been keeping that one quiet... Will be awesome if Rage is supported in 3D Vision.
