TF2 runs abnormally slow in 3D......is this on my end?
Hey there! I play TF2 (with the specs in my sig) to 100+ FPS most of the time in 2D, at max settings @ 1920x1200, no AA. Usually the full 120 FPS but with models on screen in a heated game it bottoms out to 90-100. So one would think that this game would hover somewhere around 50-60 FPS in 3D, no? Apparently not.....for me at least. Even when I lower ALL settings (except for changing the DX level to 8), it still only gives me ~20-30 FPS in a heated game, even dipping below 20 sometimes!
Needless to say this is pretty abnormal when Left 4 Dead, an arguably more demanding game running the same engine, runs excellently at a constant 60 FPS in 3D at the highest settings with AA enabled. Something's wrong here with TF2. The only way to get TF2 running at a constant 30-40 FPS in 3D is lowering the DX level to 8 (in addition to lowering all other graphical settings including resolution) and that doesn't seem right after considering Left 4 Dead.
I'm particularly bummed about this one because TF2 is my "daily grind" game that gets most of my play time, and it would be great to be able to play it regularly in 3D with the wonderful image clarity and depth it provides. It really changes TF2 completely for me, and it's a shame I have such a performance hit even with my more than adequate system.
So my question would be if there is anything I might be doing wrong, or are the drivers just not working as well as they could with TF2?

I have not tried left for dead..
but I tried TF2 and CSS in 3D stereo and was also dissapointed by the poor performance - so poor that it makes imposssible to play the games in a competitive manner. no matter what settings i tried - performance remained terrible - just as you said.
on the other hand - half life games (same engine) runs smooth like a butter.
so my conclusion was that the poor performance has something to do with playing online..
left 4 dead might be less affected by this "online performance degradation" because there are max 4 players playing coop? opposed tf2 and css on avarage 20 players?

There was a big thread a while ago where a fair few of us all reported the same issue, that in we'd have 100+fps in non-3D mode, but in3D mode we'd have around 20-30, BUT, only if we had the 3D laser sight/crosshair enabled. If we disabled that (Ctrl + F12 I think), then the game leaped up to 60fps again, but was still in 3D. I'd assume this will just be the same issue, as there was a "We'll look into it" reply, but nothing has come of it as far as I'm aware yet.

Thanks for the quick fix, Cuky! Just as you said, it worked and the game plays at 60 now at all times. Unfortunately it makes the game just as unplayable competitively as it removes the 3D crosshair =/
Seems like a driver issue to me, anytime now Nvidia. Though if it's been like this since the beginning, I'm not holding my breath. Maybe TF2 isn't popular enough and isn't a recently-released game so it goes on their backburner?

Seemed to work fine for me with the regular crosshair. Do you crank your depth or convergence up to extreme levels? I'm admittedly terrible as Team Fortress so I can't describe myself as competitive. :">

I use 100% separation but I don't touch convergence (the commands for it don't seem to work anyway), same goes for all other games. Turning the 3D crosshair off makes the game playable, performance-wise, but I literally have to aim between two crosshairs about two inches apart.....that's not fun when you play competitively =/
Pretty much the same reason I don't play WoW in 3D, which is a shame because that game is beautiful in 3D. I started using 3D when the problem was already around, but apparently after a certain WoW update, Blizz broke/removed the 3D crosshair so if you're a clicker you have to aim between two crosshairs >_<

tl:dr; Turn off laser sight in TF2.
