Acer 5360 vs Optoma GT700
  1 / 2
Hello all, I'm new here but have been lurking for a time as I've been doing research into which projector I want to buy. I believe I've narrowed it down to two:
The 5360 (which I know many of you are familiar with)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824009223

And the GT700
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824219089

I seem to be getting conflicting reports about certain aspects of the 5360, and reviews of the GT700 are hard to find.

The Acer website says the maximum resolution of the 5350 is 1920x1080 - so I should be able to game and watch movies in 2D at 1080p right?
http://us.acer.com/acer/productv.do?Langua...p;CRC=189010050

However, this review: http://www.projectorcentral.com/Acer_H5360...ctor_review.htm
Says that you're limited to 720p. Or at least that's the impression I'm getting.

If the 5360 can display in 1080p except in 3D, my decision is made, 5360 all the way.

If not, does anyone know anything about the GT700? It seems to be quieter than the Acer, definitely 1080p, and it's short throw, which will probably only make a difference to me in my small office. It's also almost $100 more and I'm not sure about how painless is it to run 3D content.

My final question just has to do with projectors in general. The projector will be used primarily on my PC. I'm planning on using a DVI to DVI cable from my video card and attaching it to my desktop somewhere. I'll have a DVI to DVI cable running from that to my monitor (my video card does not do HDMI out and my monitor does not do HDMI in), and I'll have a DVI to HDMI cable that will run to the projector. I will just switch out the monitor and the projector right on my desk depending on which I want to use (like a poor-mans switch).

I shouldn't run into any problems with this should I? It would switch seemlessly from one to the other right? What if they are not set to the same resolution? Will the projector adjust itself or will I need to plan ahead and change the resolution before I switch to the projector?

Thanks in advance for the help, and let me know if I wasn't very clear.

None of them is 1080p. They accept 1080p signal but output it at lower resolution. See the native resolutions.

1080p 3d projectors are coming this Fall but the prices are NA. People on blu ray forums expect the cheapest one which is the panasonic would be about 2-3 thousand.

I guess I misunderstood what max resolution meant then. I assumed it was the maximum resolution it can display at. So besides being short-throw, are there any real advantages to getting the GT700?

The short throw is a biggie and why I chose it. I'd like an even shorter throw though.

Hard to get exact stats on color wheel systems....

I dare say the Acer is a little more prone to DLP rainbows, but I have no hard facts backing that up.

I agree with JOHNnDEVER, both GT700/720 should have less RBE (maybe due to it's short throw nature) compare to the Acer.

The one advantage Acer has is the out-of the-box 3D vision support. If the GT700/G720 unit is manufactured prior to 08/2010, then you would need to send the unit back to Optoma for a firmware/hardware upgrade to get the official 3D vision support. Matter of fact, I have sent my unit in last week, hopefully I will get it back by end of this week.

Hmm. Newegg is having a great projector sale right now. Getting the GT700 will cost me $70 more than the 5360. Currently I won't be doing any 3D anything, unless I can find a way to use an ATI card and the edimensional glasses. I bought an ATI card a little over a year ago and it will be at least that long before I upgrade to an NVIDIA card. Could I use edimensionals glasses with the PS3 or xbox 360 with the projector?

I don't know that short throw will help me at all, since I have a very long living room and I will be close enough to the screen in my office that I won't want a 100" screen anyway.

What do you guys think, worth the extra $70?

How about the built-in speakers? Good built-in speakers would mean not needing to buy speakers to go with it.

Also, those of you who have the GT700, what is the bulb cost? I can't find any information on that.
And finally (I appreciate all of your responses, I know I'm asking a lot of questions): what is the significance of the "maximum resolution" that is listed for these projectors?
