I completely agree - I explicitly decided on NVIDIA over ATI/AMD because of 3D Vision supporting HDMI 1.4 and Battlefield 3 (for instance) supporting NVIDIA 3D Vision; how bad a joke would that be if it turned out that it was working fine with ATI/AMD (over at the TriDef Forums there's apparently already a working Profile for Battlefield 3 for TriDef) and HDMI 1.4 on the HMZ-T1 but - despite NVIDIA charging $40 for 3DTVPlay and announcing the game to be 3D Vision Ready - they couldn't make it work, whereas the third-party competition could! Incidentally, does TriDef HDMI 1.4 output work for NVIDIA as well as long as 3DTVPlay is installed? I know it's not officially supported but believe I read somewhere that it supposedly works...

Btw, I remember reading somewhere that there was a somewhat complicated but feasible way of manually adding devices to the EDID white list as a user, do I remember that correctly? In that case, am I correct in assuming that we could relatively easily do this ourselves if NVIDIA for whatever reason took quite a while to add support?

I will be calling back the SONY NY Flagship store when they open, they told me to call again on Friday morning for updates on the shipping situation, will post here as soon as I hear from them.

@Andrew: Assuming that 'adding support' indeed only entails adding the device to the white list, surely that means an updated driver (or just the list) would be available pretty much immediately after launch of the device, right?
We will likely have a 3DTV Play update utility avaiable to add support.

Thats concerning that you have choose to use that word, i honestly have no idea why id numbersare required, for instance the playstation 3 just works with any hdmi 1.4a device.

Are our cards not actually 1.4a, infact the ps3 was not even 1.4a spec but was updated, baffling.

Don't quote me on this, but yes, I believe both IZ3D and TriDef work fine on 1.4 devices (and likely even a number of 1.3 devices). A lot of 1.3 AVR's will actually pass frame packed 720p/60 3D and MPCM just fine. One (if not both of them) also offers more 3D options than 3DTVPlay (like side by side 1080p, and I believe even checkerboard). These formats are often preferred to the frame packed 720p that 3DTVPlay is limited to because the perceived resolution is much higher. Nvidia (claims) to do this to keep everything automated on the TV side. I have my doubts that's the real reason, because it would be the most backwards logic I've ever encountered. No one runs their desktop in 720p, and no gaming rig is going to default boot into a game in 720p, so the user already has to toggle a hundred different settings to play in 3D. In other words they are accomplishing nothing in practice gimping their software options like this. It is possible to install a EDID override driver to have 3DTVPlay function with some unsupported devices, legacy equipment (like a few older 1.3 AVR's), and enable 3DVision options (like Checkerboard support).

@reallink: thanks for the info - so basically, the odds are that I would be able to run, NVIDIA 3D Vision, IZ3D and TriDef drivers outputting HDMI 1.4 on my GTX 580 with 3DTV Play installed (possibly with an EDID override driver), which would all work with the Sony HMZ-T1? If yes, that's definitely good news, because that would mean maximum compatibility if I had more than one option?

Also, I just called the Sony NY flagship store - to quote the sales rep: "We have no idea what's currently going on, the system is showing that there are no shipments planned and we know nothing about the current launch date pushed back of November 4th pushed back from October 26th, but it doesn't seem likely that we would be able to launch the device by then if there's nothing even showing up in the system yet". This certainly doesn't look good, but let's hope that it's just a temporary delay and that Sony isn't somehow pulling the plug on this... the fact for instance that the German Sony website has removed the preordering option and the price completely (after listing it for more than a month) and now just lists the device as "unavailable" doesn't bode well though.

@Andrewf and dsk1210: I'm fine with the fact that the 3DTVPlay software essentially justs unlocks a feature that's already available on the hardware for $40 - this is completely valid price discrimination, and I'm more than willing to pay extra for these features, provided they work as advertised. That being said, I've spent more than $400 on my NVIDIA graphics card and am willing to put in the extra $40 for the HDMI 1.4 output - provided that this works the same way it works with the PS3, the top range AMD graphics cards, almost all 3D HDTV receivers and as specified by the HDMI 1.4 standard, namely for any output device that supports the HDMI 1.4 standard! You may argue that NVIDIA nowhere explicitly claims to support the HMZ-T1, but that would not be necessary as the HDMI 1.4 standard clearly prescribes a valid standard for 3D transmission, and neither Sony nor AMD find it necessary to have a whitelist of "supported" products.

Andrew, let me again ask you explicitly: what kind of support (apart from adding the device to an EDID whitelist) does NVIDIA need to provide for 3DTVPlay and the Sony HMZ-T1, why would adding this take longer than a few minutes, and why do you say it is only likely but not certain that you will be able to provide this compatibility?

I bought my GTX 580 last week in good faith that if it is being marketed as HDMI 1.4 compatible (with 3DTV Play) then it would work with any HDMI 1.4 compatible output device, but if for whatever reason that is not guaranteed, it's going right back and getting traded in for an AMD solution that works out of the box with any HDMI 1.4 device, just as specified by the standard.

I'm more than happy with my NVIDIA card at present, and certainly do not mean to come across as mean-spirited in any way, but since I've spent more than $400 on an NVIDIA product intended for use with the Sony HMZ-T1 last week I'm obviously alarmed if you hint at the possibility that I might have wasted my money here.

Unfortunately I have no personal experience with the third party solutions (IZ3D or Tridef), so I can't really say how it all works with multiple solutions installed concurrently. You will need to confirm with someone who has a better understanding. I've only read the comments of folks that have been disappointed with 3DTVPlay's lack of side-by-side and checkerboard support, and have switched over to IZ or Tri to good reviews. You would not need to install any EDID overrides to get IZ or Tri to work, that's just a band-aid to fix Nvidia's odd ball implementation.

Well, the major thing is that I'm not sure whether 3DTVPlay unlocks HDMI 1.4 for all solutions (e.g. IZ3D or TriDef) or only for NVIDIA 3D Vision, since I assume those alternative implementations would be of no use to me with the HMZ-T1 unless there was some way to get them to work with HDMI 1.4, or am I missing something here?

As I understand it (and it's possible I'm mistaken) 3DTVPlay only "unlocks" access to Nvidia's 3DVision game profiles/compatibility--it's not unlocking the 1.4 functionality of the GPU or anything. Since IZ and Tri use their own game profiles/compatibility lists, I would suspect they function more like the PS3. I imagine they just transmit the 3D signal and if your devices support 3D, you're good to go. If not, you probably get a black screen.

reallink, thanks for the update! It seems that TriDef is HDMI 1.4 enabled only on ATI hardware, and I haven't found anything on IZ3D support for HDMI 1.4 - I had assumed that perhaps 3DTVPlay essentially unlocks HDMI 1.4 framepacking compatible output for the graphics card in general, which could then also be used by other applications.

On the other hand, perhaps HDMI 1.4 is not an absolute necessity for the HMZ-T1? As I understand, the PS3 is technically also only HDMI 1.3 compatible and has the option of outputting in 1280x1470 top-bottom format, so it might be that the HMZ-T1 supports this format also.

I've now also asked on the big AVS Forum thread on the HMZ-T1 concerning information on the supported 3D formats if we have to make do without 3D Vision (and for games that do not properly support 3D Vision), let's see if they have any information on this.

Why is all of this so confusing and complicated? I want to play Battlefield 3 (among others) on the HMZ-T1, which accepts 3D content via a standardized HDMI 1.4 input.

By NVIDIA marketing, BF3 is supposed to be 3D Vision Ready (that's what NVIDIA tells me with the latest driver 285.62 which have a 3D Vision profile for the game giving it an 'Excellent' rating) and 3D Vision supports HDMI 1.4 output via 3DTVPlay (that's what NVIDIA is telling me on the homepage) - that's what made me (and quite a few other customers, I presume) spend $400+ on a GTX 580 for this. Now that I've spent the money, NVIDIA is telling me that actually, BOTH of these things are either not currently working and/or not guaranteed in the future, despite what one would certainly expect.

Andrew, I'm kind of hoping that NVIDIA can help clear up some of this confusion, and also perhaps get around to answering the original question of what precisely 'support' for the HMZ-T1 would entail and why that support is only likely but not guaranteed; given the situation mentioned above, it seems a lot of potential customers are currently pretty wary of NVIDIA's claims of supporting anything with 3D Vision, so you could assuage some of the doubts here?

Sigh looks like nvidia may have it ready for release... Pre-ordered this a month and half ago. 3 weeks ago I get an email saying it was delayed till today. I get no emails of any sort but they dont send it.... So I have no idea of when it will be released.

I have pre-ordered the hmz-t1, and have no idea when i will receive it.

I do hope though that the support is quick though, i remember i bought my panasonic 3dtv with the promise of 3dtv play coming out very soon, i ended up having my tv for about 3 months or more before 3dtv play became available, even though they had been demoing it nearly 5 months before i even bought my tv.

I hope i dont come across as arrogant or pushy when talking about these things, i do appreciate that andrew frequents this website to give us info, and i am grateful for that.
I do believe though that nvidia as a company in general has their buissness practices wrong though, i don't beleieve people should have to pay for 3dtv play, for instance sony added the 3d capability of the ps3 for nothing to make it a more attractive proposition and i do believe it would be a feather in the cap of nvidia to offer the capabilty out the box.

Ps. i did not have to pay for 3dtv play as i had bought 3d vision years ago, but I still think of my fellow man.

To be honest, I don't even mind paying extra for 3DTVPlay - as long as it works as it should without any arbitrary restrictions, and without having to wait for support for something that should be supported straight out of the box with 3DTVPlay, namely HDMI 1.4 compatible output devices!

Supposedly there's been similar issues with NVIDIA failing to provide side-by-side support for NVIDIA 3D Vision, apparently people were upset about this but so far questions and pleas have been largely ignored, here's hoping that NVIDIA prove themselves to be dedicated to customer support :)

Thats concerning that you have choose to use that word, i honestly have no idea why id numbersare required, for instance the playstation 3 just works with any hdmi 1.4a device.

Choosing to be optimistic, I would guess that he is talking about the method of distribution when he says "likely". As in, it is likely that there will be an update utility, instead of having to wait for a new driver release.

I've put together a little blog on 3D gaming (and especially NVIDIA 3D Vision) with the HMZ-T1 that I intend to update as news comes in and to share my experiences as soon as the device has come out:

So far I've posted several tidbits of infos and links that seem relevant for anyone interested in 3D PC gaming with the HMZ-T1, and I would appreciate any further input, experiences and ideas from your side; I thought it might be good to have a centralized go-to point for interested gamers :)
