Hi all. My intention with this post is that you write about the better monitor to use with shutter glasses, and the experiences with the monitor you have.
I have an AOC 1024x768 17" monitor (I bought it in 1997, so it has work enought). It gives me only 85hz maximun at 1024x768 with shutter glasses, and I play with some flicker. I need to upgrade the monitor, and I´ve seen some forums, but I´ve not clear what is the better for shutter (price/quality).
I´ve heard very well about Mitshubishi/NEC and Iiyama, but here (in Spain) it´s too much difficult to find these monitors in the shops. The most common here are LG, Samsung, Samtrong, Philips, AOC, Benq, Belinea, etc.
And would be good to speak about the maximun refresh rates that each gives, and how works with shutter glasses. I´ve read about ghosting with some monitors that support high frequencies, so it´s not only important to see the specs of the monitors (better the experiences of the people). Also there are other points to be present like brightness (shutter lost brightness), etc.
Would be great that people write something like this, each one with his monitor (I put my monitor):
- Model: AOC Spectrum 7Vlr
- Size: 17"
- Max resolutions using shutter glasses: 1280*102@60hz - 1024*768@85hz - 800*600@85hz - 640*480@85hz.
- Aproximate price: no found today in the shops, but very cheap.
- The better: nothing. You can put here if it has 2 vga outputs, type of tube, etc.
- The cons: flicker, no flat panel, not enought size (17"), bad tube.
- Valoration: 2. Don´t buy if you see it.

I personally like my 21" Sony Trinitron. It''s sharp, big, and powerful.
I haven''t used it with stereo 3d but it supports high refresh rates and very high resolutions.
1600x1200 is very usable on it even when I don''t wear my eye glasses.
I got mine on eBay for a cheap $130USD. Be forwarned that if the electron guns get bent it will be noticable since it uses a diffrent method of rendering the screen.
- Model: Sony Trinitron (forgot the model)
- Size: 21"
- Max resolutions using shutter glasses: 1600x1200@75 - 1280x960@100 - 1024x768@120 - 800x600@140 640x480@144
- Aproximate price: $300+USD retail -$150USD ebay
- The better: Has support for two PC's at once. One with some unfimilar high quanlty video connection and the other standard VGA. Big screen with great resolutions and refresh rates. Very configurable (Geometric Magnetic sheild, vertical and horizontal electron guns for all around sharpness, Landing adjustment, etc.), Sharp, Crystal Clear image, Mirror Flat screen.
- The cons: Freakin HUGE CRT, White can get dull at points, if electron guns get bent it can look good in one area and crap in another.
- Valoration: Buy if you can find a good price but take good care of it.

I have a 21" Sony GDM-500PS. This monitor is amazing. I generally run it at 1024x768 @120Hz when stereo gaming. No flicker at all. I''ve had it for over 5 years with no problems. I don''t think Sony is making CRTs anymore so I''d recommend checking out other 21" monitors. If you can run 120Hz you shouldn''t see any flickering when you use stereo.
About the only con is having to lug it around to LAN parties but the picture is so good a hernia is worth it. :)

It isn't true. 120 / 2 = 60Hz per eye - inertion for eye is more 85Hz. So, 120, it's MORE BETTER then 85/2, but still not full comfortable. AS for me, usage 120Hz is good, but eyes will tired by 3-4 hours.

I think - you WRONG. Teoretically, by differences at vertical and gorisontal rates of CRT monitor - it can be. But I never see monitor with 1024*768@85hz - 800*600@85hz - 640*480@85hz.
You can't choose more rates in settings, but monitor can do these. Most configurations like you (1280*102@60hz - 1024*768@85hz) do 800*600@100hz - 640*480@120hz. :magic:
I'm using CTX VL700series - at 640x480x120Hz - more resolutions give more stereo quality, but I can't understend, how you can play at 85Hz/2 = 42.5Hz per eye long time...

This is strange... I can put Windows with 800x600@100hz, but I can´t put Nvidia Stereo drivers at this frequency, the maximun that it gives me is 800x600@85hz. If I press "+" key to increase frequency in the test it do nothing. I can decrease and increase but between 60 and 85 hz only.
The driver of the monitor is good, and I don´t remeber to put any limit to use refresh rates (like I´ve written, I can put windows in 800x600@100hz, but not the stereo).

Well, I don''t normally play for more than 4 hrs at a time so 120Hz is perfect for me. The 500PS has higher refresh rates if you lower the resolution:
640x480 - 160Hz
800x600 - 160Hz
1024x768 - 133Hz (I just use 120 though, never knew 133 was the max)
1280x1024 - 100Hz
1600x1200 - 85Hz
I have noticed that depending on the driver it limits the refresh rate to lower than maximum. Not sure why this is, but if you use Rivatuner you can generally set the higher rate.

If at right position (for 640x480) - you see only 85Hz, so you can try manually set more rates in windows reester (I did it for setting 130Hz on my monitor).
And last: some games don't want to change rates higher then at desktop (like AxySnake).

Have a 19" Samsung Syncmaster CRT, which does 1024x768@120.. but i'm not that happy either. Still get quite bad ghosting on certain games (which seems to cause me more of a problem than flicker).
Would be interested to hear if anyone has a better screen.. otherwise next step would be buying a HMD :)

I have an Envision EFT720 17" CRT, was really cheap when I bought it, only goes as high as 85hz, but the only times I notice flicker and/or ghosting is with really bright graphics.
Honestly this may just be me, but the only time I notice any problems (fatigue headache etc) is from the glasses and not so much the display frequency. I have wireless Revelator/H3D glasses and just wearing them with no stereo (not flickering) gives me a head ache after some time . I also have some wireless Eye3Ds and I don't have the same problem. I've watched movies that are about 90 minutes long and played games for hours with little to no problems, once I got used to them. But maybe I'm just different /alien.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':alien:' />

I have 2 monitors that I use on 2 different computers. The first is a gateway VX900 and the other is a 21 inch trinitron. Although the gateway isn't bad and very good for 3-D, the Sony trinitron is amazing. The colors are so crisp and bright. I have seen this on the stereo DLP projector at a convention last year and that was really good. Who here has a projector?

I´ve heard very well about Mitshubishi/NEC and Iiyama, but here (in Spain) it´s too much difficult to find these monitors in the shops. The most common here are LG, Samsung, Samtrong, Philips, AOC, Benq, Belinea, etc.

1600x1200 is very usable on it even when I don''t wear my eye glasses.
I got mine on eBay for a cheap $130USD. Be forwarned that if the electron guns get bent it will be noticable since it uses a diffrent method of rendering the screen.

Very configurable (Geometric Magnetic sheild, vertical and horizontal electron guns for all around sharpness, Landing adjustment, etc.), Sharp, Crystal Clear image, Mirror Flat screen.

the rates for STEREO and rates for MONO - are different (only in drivers, not for monitor). There is special page In stereo drivers: the size of your monitor, and refresh rates for different resolutions. To set 120Hz on 640x480 I drop beginner tor right.
If at right position (for 640x480) - you see only 85Hz, so you can try manually set more rates in windows reester (I did it for setting 130Hz on my monitor).

Would be interested to hear if anyone has a better screen.. otherwise next step would be buying a HMD :)

But maybe I'm just different
