VR Goggles (Z800) or 3D Monitor (Zalman, IZ3D)
Hi Guys,

i am very interested in the subject and read a bit about the emagin Z800 (which seem very intersting to me)..as well as the "cheap" VR920.

My question now is whether a 3D Monitor like the Zalman or IZ3D give a better "immersion experience" compared to those goggles? Especially when it comes to FOV!

The point is that eg. the Z800 goggle have only a resolution of 800x600 and a FOV of 40 degrees.

Now i really, really like my new Widescreen LCD monitor and i play at 1650x1080, for games which demand a lot (Crysis) i can also turn down to non-native 1440x resolution. It would be odd to obtain VR goggles just to see that the (subjective) FOV then is smaller than what i already have with my normal LCD monitor.

Now, subjectively speaking, which method creates a bigger screen/FOV...a HMD headpiece like the Z800, using 800x600 and only (!) 4:3 aspect.....or getting a 3D monitor the same size as my current 22" LCD. Wouldnt a monitor have way more advantages....speak high resolution AND wider FOV?

(I am used to play games like WoW and i am about 1-2ft away from the screen)

Also..i know that NVidia just released new 3D drivers a few weeks ago. I have a 8800 GTS and i am on Vista 64. My question is what method of 3D is most compatible? Do the new drivers also run under Vista64, do they even work with the 8800 GTS?

Could someone already compare a Z800 vs. IZ3D and the Zalman monitor...which of those creates an "overall" best 3d effect ?

thanks!!

Hi
Have Z800, 22" CRT with shutterglasses and too 2 DLP projector shutterglasses setup (with matrox dualHead2Go adapter).
For my the best solution is Pc with 7900 card, older shutterglasses compatible drivers and older 3D compatible DLP projector (Benq PB 6240, MP720,721)
Second (and no bad ) solution is 7900 card, older drivers, shutterglasses and DLP 3D compatible full HD TV (mitsubishi or samsung)
I think the last setup is for you ideal.
Vista, 8800 card, is no good in this time for perfect 3D setup.

Flexy, I feel the same way. I am trying to find another 3d solution, but no product is perfect. I've got the VR920, and it was a decent buy for the price. You can get for around $350 now which isn't that much more than a regular LCD screen, and half the price of the Zalman. However its not without its faults.

First off, the VR920 does display a very nice image. The colors are only 16-bit (maybe 24-bit) so there is some dithering, but the 3d image is very clear. No ghosting what-so-ever. It also has a headtracker which works OK for some games. Stereo3d effect is very convincing, however the screens appear small. I usually game on a regular 22" widescreen monitor and the VR920's virtual screen appears smaller. I'd say its appears to be about the size of a 21" 4:3 sized monitor seated at regular distance. So it comes up short on the immersion factor. The headtracker can make up for it, but it only works in a dozen or so supported games. Its not the worst buy (there are worse headsets being sold for way more) but its still not quite there yet.

After playing with the VR920 for about a year, I think I'm ready to try something new out. The VR920 is fun, but its too much of a hassle for everyday use. Personally, I'm going with the Zalman, but most people seem to like the iz3D better (probably because they have the iz3D) ;) so its tough to say. But if you are looking for an immersive experience (aka big screen) than a 22" 3D monitor will probably fit the bill better than the VR920. Just know you are going to have to sacrifice the image quality somewhat with either solution.

Also, the Z800 is no longer supported AFAIK and doesn't work with Vista or 8/9 series cards (since you need the old nvidia drivers). The VR920 works with both XP + Vista, while the Zalman is Vista 32-bit only. Just things to keep in mind.
