BUG REPORT: 3D-Vision-Discover can't be enabled on Laptops! Nvidia - Please fix this!

Hi

Let me explain this issue. Our notebook OEMs requested that we do not enable Discover on notebooks. That was not our choice. This was because 3D was so new to them.

That being said, we are going to explore turning it back on since now they are more interested in 3D.
It would make a lot of users happy if NVIDIA just enable it. Currently it is stupid to connect to an external monitor just to enable it as when enabled, the laptop panel is displaying it correctly.

Hi

We currently dont allow 3D Vision Discover on laptops. Is this something you want?
Dusting off an old thread question, but it's relevant to me.

YES. A few of us would be interested in this. It's frustrating as hell that I can't get my Alienware OptX2310 3D Display to play via HDMI from my Alienware m11x. And I AM one of the 3D faithful. At least having anaglyph gaming ability would be something, cheesy glasses or no.

And no, I don't want to hear about a firmware update to 1.4 on the HDMI port or converting the VGA output. Doesn't work. That dead horse has been beaten to death on 3 other 3D tech forums. And we shouldn't have to resort to Sensio Technologies original implementation of the 3d player for nimble playback capability, either.

What we would like is a bloody all-inclusive 3D package out of nVidia that is just plain built into the driver package. A FULL FEATURED 3D video player/pic viewer/polygon game renderer. Not some niche, half-baked, tempermental and restrictive installers for our spendy premium grade hardware.

FFS, give us the POWER.

Don't mix the facts together here. The AW2310 just reports as a 60Hz Display over HDMI - so Nvidia can't change this. You can't get 120Hz over HDMI with this display.
The AW2310 was made for Dual-DVI 3D-Option. It is not a 3DTV that works with HDMI. That should have been clear before buying.

But you should be able to choose 3D-Vision-Discover, when the AW2310 is connected over HDMI.

You should, but you cannot. This fault may lie with either the Optimus based 335m GPU, but either way, the lack of anaglyph conversion is irritating when you can still install the 3d vision drivers, but not run the setup wizard. Here's one to blow your mind: The AW2310 shows on the PS3's 3D menu as capable, but there's no integral shutter sync IR xmitter.

Hi

The AW2310 does not support 3D over HDMI. If its reporting itself to your PS3 as one, then its a huge mistsake on Alienware's fault.

They probably planned on a revamp including the transmitter but forgot to reprogram the HDMI EDID to NOT report 3D spec on 1.4...fail on AW's part.

Andrew I see this issue has existed for a long time now, it is having an effect on our GPU upgrade efforts on a 3D capable Alienware R3 which does have a 3D 120hz panel, Dell seem to be able to get around this issue with the 460m GPU - as to how they do this is as yet to be discovered (prob system bios) but as there are many 3D enabled laptops entering the market isn't it time to change this rediculous situation, your kind attention to the matter would be very much appriciated by many.

Hi,

Why are you discussing that on this thread? I dont think its fair to call it ridiculous. You are trying to install a GPU with a certain thermal limit into a notebook that was never tested for that thermal limit.

Hi all,
i got a gtx485m too on my alienware m17x R3 and cooling is better than the gtx460m.
The only missing option is 3D.
And in many forum, I saw lots of people having an m17x R3 and planning up to gtx485m, it will be usefull if we can have a proprely 3D driver working.^^

I think that's kinda true, however, you aren't responding to our thread anymore...

This is getting upsetting from a consumer standpoint, this should work.

IZ3D sucks. No matter how simple a game is or which version of DX it runs on, it crashes after a few minutes on my gtx570m. So, I am trying your solution as soon as possible. I prefered a geForce armed laptop over radeon one mostly because of anaglyph 3D. I hope OEMs will get to reason soon.

Hi

Just to remind everyone in this thread, the decision to remove 3D Vision discover from laptops was a request from OEMs, it was not our desire.

Hi Andrew, lets face the truth for a moment.
This is only a marketing-strategy to sell more expensive 3D-ready laptops. There is no technical reason disabling Anaglyph-Mode.
It's a sad story for the people that were using this feature for years and now they can't suddenly.

Things like this sum up and lead to disappointment and this leads to consumer-loss.
Tell me Andrew: Why not simply buying a laptop with AMD-graphics and using the free IZ3D-Anaglyph-Mode?

By the way: Free IZ3D-Anaglyph-Mode is working with Nvidia-cards too - but its a shame that laptop-users have to use 3rd-party software when the GPU-drivers allready have this option inbuilt.
Sorry Andrew, I know you are just a small light in a big company and it's not meant personal to you, but I can't find sympathy for company-decisions like this.
