I downloaded several JPEG files that display the same image side-by-side shifted for 3D effect. After renaming their extensions from JPG to JPS, these images look great in the 3D Vision Photo Viewer.
So, the logical next step is a software application that takes a 2D JPG file as input and outputs a left-right 3D JPS image. While I looked into the open source [url="http://make3d.cs.cornell.edu/"]Make3D image converter[/url], it creates VRML files rather than JPS.
Is there any known software tool or application for this? I'd rather not have to do this manually with Photoshop. (Note: a search for "3d convert" discovered no threads on this topic, surprisingly.)

if you just take a image and "shift" it in the 3d plane either towards or behind you, it wont look GREAT, it will look the same as 2d, only shifted, it will still be a flat plane...

Just putting two of the same image side-by-side does not make it 3D. You need to do considerable editing and processing of the image to convert it to 3D.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I discovered (no pun intended) that simply shifting an image only changes the background distance but does not actually create a 3D effect. The software tool that I used for testing is [url="http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/"]StereoPhoto Maker[/url]. For anyone else who wishes to try it:
- Download, unpack, and launch StereoPhoto Maker.
- Select File -> Left/Right Images. Select the same image for both left and right.
- Use the keyboard arrow keys to shift the dual image.
- Save as JPS.
- Load newly-created JPS in 3D Vision Photo Viewer.
- Prepare to be amazed, and by "amazed" I mean "underwhelmed".
Still, there are various plugins and applications that do fairly impressive real-time 3D conversion of 2D video. It would be nice to apply a similar algorithm to single images.

I have seen a real-time converter for images from TriDef (not compatible with 3D Vision) and it works OK. I think is based on making brighter objects closer to the screen. This works ok for shots with people but can look weird sometimes. Its really difficult for a computer algorithm to convert an image into 3D.
