Left 4 Dead Now Has A Frame Skip / Jump About Every Second Built new PC and installed Windows 7 x64
1 / 2
I had 3D vision running on my dual core E8500 build for a little bit, and had numerous games installed on it, Left 4 Dead included. It looked and ran great in 3D vision mode. I just built a new PC to replace my old one (i5 2500k), same GTX580, but now am using Windows 7 x64 bit instead of the Windows 7 x32 bit on my previous build. I have all the latest x64 bit drivers from Nvidia installed.
I fired up Left 4 Dead for the first time today on my new build and noticed that it seems to have this strange annoying frame skip about every second. It is most noticable when walking or moving. It's like I'm skipping forward or something. Otherwise the game runs ok. I tried different settings in Left 4 Dead but nothing gets rid of this problem. I have tried a few tech demos and games and they all run fine on my new rig. Left 4 Dead is the only game that has this strange behavior thus far. Some programs I have tried in 3D and work great are Just Cause 2, Nvidia Geoforms, Nvidia Medusa, Dream Aquarium screen saver, Nvidia Sun Village, and one other I can't remember.
Anyone else have this problem with Left 4 Dead, especially running a 64bit operating system?
Oh, and if I play Left 4 Dead with 3Dvision off, there is no frame skip. None at all. Just a sliky smooth frame rate. I always use Vsync too, and also did on my Windows 7 x32 bit build. No problems there like I said.

It's a driver issue. Seems to be a problem with certain source games and the nvidia 3d laser sight.
You can try turning off the 3d cursor ctrl+F12, but then you have to use the screen depth crosshair or try to turn it off.
Or use an older driver that doesn't have the borked 3d laser sight.
Next driver driver release should fix it up, See more here: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=194496

Hi
I posted yesterday tht we have a fix coming for the lasersight in HL2 based games to improve performance. It will be available in our next major driver release.

OK but is it a 64bit driver issue then? Because like I said, I had the same excact drivers, only 32bit on my last build before upgrading. That computer ran smoothly without the frameskip. I never use either the ingame crosshair or the Nvidia laser sight in either of my builds. The only difference is my last build the game ran smoothly in 32bit. This build it has this frame skip, 64bit.

I just wanted to say that I figured out my problem. Even though the red Nvidia lasersight wasn't visible on my screen (so I hence thought it was "off"), it was still considered "on" by the driver. I got fed up enough and went through all my options and to my surprise, when I did the shortcut to enable/disable the Nvidia lasersight, it said on the bottom of the screen it has just been disabled. Then the frame rate improved drastically without that annoying frameskip problem.
I also want to stress that Left 4 Dead with two Xbox360 controllers, works great in splitscreen 3D. If you have some friends over I highly suggest you try it out! It runs flawlessly maxed out in game and in the Nvidia control panel and in 3D. On a large screen it can't be beat!

Hi
We specifically fixed the crosshair performance issue with 270.51 betas so you can use the in-game crosshair.

Nah. I am using the Xbox360 controller, which has autoaim. I don't play online anyway so I disable the ingame crosshair and the character names to make the game look better in 3D in singleplayer.
I will download an updated driver when the next WHQL version is released.

Except for the fact that the latest beta drivers completely goofed performance in Black ops, literally to unplayable. Reverted back to 266.58, smooth as silk. So it's either good Black ops performance(266) or good HL2 engine performance(270beta). I'll also wait for the certified drivers.

I already have great performance with the 266 drivers, and I'm not excited about wasting about an hour redoing the Nvidia control panel settings for each game & tech demo I have installed (AA, AF, etc) and resaving my 3D Vision in game settings (convergence, depth) all over again, every time I have to update the driver.
So it's my own time to waste when I consistenly upgrade drivers, unless there's a fix I really need.
I wish Nvidia would allow users to keep their control panel & 3D vision settings whenever the driver is updated, instead of having to redo it every time.
My PC runs almost everything flawlessly anyway. God bless overclocking and having a latest build!

That's one of the hard to explain misses of nvidia's software. I really wonder why they do it that way. I always hope that someone at nvidia has thought about it and that the next version will keep all custom configurations during driver update. But... not.

Thanks for this thread, I was also suffer from this stuttering! Didnt think to check the laser sight!
Did the OP mod out the Source engine's in-game crosshair like me?
Great to hear nVidia are sorting out the laser sight for the source engine. Very timely for Portal 2

If anyone finds this thread and has the described problem, but it hasn't been fixed yet: I found that Digsby, my multi-protocol chat client, was causing the exact same issue, and exiting it would remedy the frame skip.
