My original config many years ago was a set of else revelator glasses with a 17" crt. Today I have an nvidia 7950 gt with a 19"lcd, and a pair of emagin 800x 600 hmd goggles which seem to provide better 3D (no ghosting at all) compared to the IZ3D 17" lcd monitor that I've tried.
First of all, is there anyone out there who can confirm that the IZ3D has some noticeable ghosting when running games in 3D?
Next... has anyone tried both eMagin's Z800 hmd AND Icuity's VR920 and could offer a comparison? Any ghosting on the VR920 since it is an lcd that I know of vs. an OLED display?
Finally... I'm actually looking for the ultimate 3D setup to offer an alternative to the eMagine Z800: a projection unit. Can anyone recommend a reliable, affordable, 3D projection unit and also any other materials or hardware I might need to play games largescreen and in 3D? My 7950 has vga/dvi out and stereo works fine on the Z800 with a good list of games so far... but I want the enemies in my games to be at least 5 feet tall on a projection screen. So... if any of you out there have 3D projection setups, could you make a comparison to an HMD... any ghosting with projection setups like the old shutterglasses/crt monitor combo?
Thanks a bunch! /wave.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

hi! i have teste both.. 22" and 17" iz3d.. there is absolutely nothing to compare.. 2 completely different worlds...
the ghosting is only wher you have dark spots neal very bright ones.. yo you have seen the 17 you said, i would say its around 10% of that one.
its true HDM dont have ghosting.. but they are based on nvidia drivers wich today gives no security for teh future at all.. 8 series is out from a year and after 10 different version still noone is working..
hdm also have very low resolutions...
the HMD's are 800 X 600 for Emagin, and 640 X 480 for Icuiti. No compartison

I did a ton of research on a DLP projector that was affordable and would do 3d. Forget about the 800X600 resolution of the $4000 Infocus DepthQ...overpriced and graphics are too blocky.
The best projector for the money is the refurb Sharp XR10-X that they have on Ebay and sometimes at Fry's Electronics for under $700. It is 1024 X 768 and will do 85 hz with no ghosting and only a slight flicker of certain bright white objects. That flicker goes away after your eyes adjust for a minute. It is amazing. Games look more realistic than my 1600X1200 resolution LCD because with 3d images your brain adds the two 1024X768 images together. Especially if you force some AA on in your Nvidia drivers. Simply amazing.
You will need to either get the device from 3dflightsims.com (see parallax inversion) for the wireless edimensional glasses or make something to revers pins 1 and 2 (tip and middle) of the wired glasses connector. This is due to the signal being delayed 1 refresh cycle by the DLP processor of the projector. Other DLP projectors may have problems due to slower color wheels or more lag time before the image draws. From studies done the Sharp XR10-X scored the best on both.
For those considering the HMDs, beware of how much immersion you will fail to get because of the Field Of View limitations. Most of the HMDs claim they look like a 6 foot screen 12 feet away or something like that...well...that sucks because you end up with only a 20-25 degree FOV. I play with my projection on a 60 inch screen about 5 feet in front of me and that gives me a 45 degree FOV. That is what many games look best at.
I also found the best way to find games that are compatable with 3d. Go to TrackIR's web site (naturalpoint I think) and look at the list of games that work with TrackIR. They have links to the demos of many of the games. If a game works with TrackIR that means it was designed for the images to be seen from different vantage points when people move their head. These games seem to work equally well with 3d glasses. I would recommend the GTR2 and GT Legends demos. Trust me.

Probably the only reason I wouldn't go with the IZ3d is that you can't use a fresnel lens to make the image appear much larger and farther away. I prefer to use either my projector in 3d because it will easily fill a 45 degree FOV or I'll not play in 3d but get the immersion by using my 1600X1200 2d LCD with the F550 fresnel lens.
I hope someone will release a DLP projector with 1024X768 or better resolution that does 120 hz....then if Nvidia releases better drivers the world of 3d gaming will finally take off.

I have several questions about this PJ.
Do you find the 2000 lumens real? Are they suitable to see through the glasses without darken too much the image? I was thinking in a 3000 lumens projector to be sure the image was not too dark...
Do you think it is enough in case of retroprojection?
I have read that many people had many problems with blown bulbs just after 90 day gurantee or at the most before 1000 hours of use (500-700 hours). How much hours have you used it? People report heat problems if used ceiling mounted? Do you have problems with this?
An my last question. Do you see the rainbow effect when seing PC? and when seeing movies from DVD player?

For my needs projecting it onto just a 60 inch screen that is painted with normal matte white paint I have to run the projector in econo mode because in normal mode it is a little too bright even with the shutter glasses. I have over 500 hours on the bulb so far and haven't had an issue. Perhaps Sharp did a fix on the refurbs that were resold to solve the quick burn out problem. I think any projector could have issues with being ceiling mounted if you don't have your room cool enough and the air circulating since the hot air in the room can get trapped up near the ceiling.
I do not know what you mean by retroprojection. If that is rear projection then I imagine this bulb is bright enough.
I get no rainbow effect at all.
I was playing the R-Factor demo last night and it is absoltely amazing in 3d. Even the dirt on the windshield is in 3d. If you want to get car sick just turn off bumpit view and the huds. With AA on 4x people can't even guess the resolution because you can't see the pixels when playing games in stereo.
Please keep in mind that not all DLP projectors will produce good 3d results and most won't do 85hz.
Look at this report and I think you will see how few choices you have. Especially loot at the time offset section:

Thank you for your answer. I readed this PDF, and seen the web page with some extra PJs, I appreciate very much the feedback of a real user as you though, in order to choose between these PJs.
Your screen is 60 inch...err... diagonal or wide?
Yes I meant rear projection, because I wanted to stay 1 m away from a 1.2-1.5 m wide screen, and I am afraid of projecting my own head shadow if I do front projection. But I must check with manual I guess.
Maybe do you know of some review where they have measured real brightness and contrast?, I have not found any. Nevertheless it is good news if you use it in ECO mode with glasses and still the dark areas are visible.
I am REALLY tempted to go with 3 x sharp xr10x + a matrox Triplehead2go Analog, to have a ultra-ultra-widescreen of 3072x768 at 85 Hz (3 x 1024x768) in stereo...
I have seen the offset is about 0.3 ms, which is more or less the glasses shutter for 60 Hz per eye... Not bad I guess, bu tI'm not sure about this. Do you see different tint color between left and right eye images?
BTW, Do you see the flickering due to "low" (85 Hz) refresh rate? EDIT: I didn't see your comments about this. Ignore question then, pls.
Sorry to ask you so many questins, but it is really difficult to have feedback of stereoscopic use... I really appreciate your comments. Tx

I have seen some reviews of TH2GO, and they are pretty nice, I bit of distortion, but it is done express, and seems natural, IMO, even more natural if TH2GO is used with TIR.
On the other hand, do you know if using the two outputs from the gfx card, if it possible to play with two screens (image expanded through them) in stereo?

Hi,
3D stereo is active with consumer stereodrivers only on 1 VGA output of graphic card - stereo on 2 or 3 screens is possible only per 1 VGA output and then dividing to 2 or 3 screens with Matrox graphic expander.
Stereo is synchronous , I use this with trackir 4 and Condor soaring simulator - this is ultimative home virtual reality simulation. I use 2 DLP projectors - 4x1,7 m picture in active 3D stereo with Headtracking - totally blast. Have in work bumpit from glider - and I planing visualisation of instruments per external second PC on small monitor ( simmeters).

Have in work bumpit from glider - and I planing visualisation of instruments per external second PC on small monitor ( simmeters).

Have you had the chance to compare the Benq PB6240 with the Sharp Xr-10X? I have doubts between boths

Sorry, I am on vacation and do not have internet access much.
To answer some of your questions,
I do not see anything wrong or different in the color from left to right eye. The color wheel of the sharpe is fast enough that it doesn't appear to be an issue. The human eye naturally does some auto white balance so it is possible that there is a slight color difference but I cannot detect it.
I think 3 of the sharp xr10x projectors and the triple head 2 go would be great.
I have my projector mounted upside down behind my head about 2 feet back and about a foot above my head. The angle the projector projects at when upside down makes it so it doesn't hit your head and it projects with no distortion and it puts the center of the image directly in front of you.

Hello,
Have tested (my) PB 6240 - good only light R/L color difference (one eye light blue, second eye light yelow) - no big.problem - is no noticeable in 3D, little problem - the 2 PJ in 2PJ setup must by L/R synchronous, is randomly good or not, - from my sight no big problem. The SHARP I have not tested. Have seen Benq MP 620, 720, 721 - all the same as my 6240. max refresh 85 Hz. Rainbow efect is not present at 85 Hz, this is problem only when video is projected with low refresh. No big problem when PJ is used with PC.
Regards
Peter

I have noticed that the E-Dimensional glasses do not allow to see too much of the periferical vision, not only in S-3D, even only in 2D, due to the translucent plastic of the googles themselves. How do you manage this with your DualHEad2Go setup, Hornet?
Maybe are you using other googles?
How much screen width can you see? Does it bother you?
Maybe are you sitting far away so you can see all screen of both PJs at same time?

Thanks a bunch!

the ghosting is only wher you have dark spots neal very bright ones.. yo you have seen the 17 you said, i would say its around 10% of that one.
its true HDM dont have ghosting.. but they are based on nvidia drivers wich today gives no security for teh future at all.. 8 series is out from a year and after 10 different version still noone is working..
hdm also have very low resolutions...
the HMD's are 800 X 600 for Emagin, and 640 X 480 for Icuiti. No compartison
the new iz3d has 1680x1050...

Thanks for your help

Peter

Maybe are you using other googles?
How much screen width can you see? Does it bother you?
Maybe are you sitting far away so you can see all screen of both PJs at same time?
