I'm not sure there are many options are to be honest.
I have a dedicated soundcard in my rig with 7.1 speakers, via analogue in my computer room.
If gaming on the big screen, I just use HDMI out via my Denon reciever in the main room to my 7.1.4 setup.
If games directly support atmos then that's fine, if not I use the DTS-X upscaling on the reciever to utilise all the speakers.
In the computer room I use a buttkicker equivalent, actually it's a 'pearl throne thumper', but it's really powerful and adds a lot to the experience. In my main room I have a ridiculous sub, but wonder if I should get another just because more is better, right :-D

Russell mate, you might want to try disabling the buttkicker setup and instead putting a powerful sub directly behind/in contact/actuating your seating area - I personally found this to give a significantly better experience than 2x buttkickers LFE mounted to armchair.

Sorry, yes I meant Neural-X, although it's always worth experimenting with modes, I found the basic surround modes better for positional audio sometimes, even though they didn't use the overhead speakers.
@RAGEdemon, yeah I know what you're saying, but that's why I have 2 listening zones, computer room is just (just...) 7.1 with buttkicker, but main room is full on with a massive subwoofer. Have thought about adding something else but I have an svs pb12 ultra/2 behind the sofa and honestly, it's immense :-D

One thing i have always made is speakers. You get quality speakers with fraction of the Price and most speakers Are done in a basic cube box. Just need to have some tools and use thick enough wall material or other methods of rigiding
Check out the new peerles PEERLESS STW-350 15"
90mm peak to peak excursion. LOL that some subwoofer element.
This is what I would get with a decent amp module to go i Was getting a sub now

Metal-O-Holic, that looks superb mate, well done on the build! It will certainly shake the whole house! :D
I agree with you completely that speakers are over priced, and it's best to build one's own, especially now that DIY non-parallel walled speaker enclosures are becoming more mainstream!
I'm by no means a near expert on sound unlike many of you folks here, but do try to do the best I can with the budget and other constraints I have. It's always inspiring to see you guys sharing your setup details, and discussing upgrades! :)
It seems the both of you love thunderous house shaking bass, and who doesn't - unless you are my wife! :(
My personal taste differs slightly from the both of you in that although I too love bass, I especially love deep, tight extension in the ultra low frequencies, and I personally abhor any hint of boomyness, usually caused by resonance with cube enclosure designs which have parallel walls.
It led me to build a woofer based around a sealed design using a semi-tube enclosure and the legendary 15" Eminence Lab 15, which spouts true ultra-low sub-frequencies best suited for sealed enclosures. The quality of sound, especially the low end extension is superb, though of course, the downside is that it is not as loud as either of yours and doesn't shake the house; - to my slight disappointment but to the everlasting gratitude of my partner :D

For a punchy, tight sound, with a fast transient response you can’t go wrong with active speakers (if you can get past the ground loops)
I have a Dolby atmos 7.0.4 setup in an acoustically treated room and it sounds phenominal.
I have Adam A77X speakers for my left, right and centre and they are unbelievable!
No need for a sub and those ribbon tweeters make the top end so nice.
I use mackie mr5’s for sides/ rears and the four height speakers.
For gaming I use Dolby atmos in the two games that support it (battlefield and Star Wars) then use the fake upscaling in games that don’t support atoms on the pre pro.
The fake atmos and fake DTS:X (called dts nueral) do a good job in games like rocket league but some games sound better just using 7.1 pcm.
I use a marantz AV7702mk2 preamp.
I watched ready player one in 4K HDR atmos on my Sony 4K projector the other night and it sounded amazing. Literally better than any cinema I’ve been to.

I use a Senhiesser external USB GSX1000 sound card that functions without drivers and it's the best "surround" sound solution I have ever experienced. Not much options for adjusting the sound profile though.
