i just reduced my monitors resolution to 720p, it looked rather.... unacceptable. expanding that to multiple times the size of a 24" monitor would only look less refined, right?
are there just no 1080p 3d vision projectors at the moment?
as for increasing depth far beyond 100% is this really a significant improvement? (assuming it's done correctly)

No, sorry, you cannot extrapolate from what you see on the monitor to a projector. Look up pixel-arc-seconds of visual acuity for reference. Since the pixels are so much farther away, they are not a problem. I run a 720p projector, and resolution is never a problem when I'm using it in 3D.
As far as I know, there are no 1080p 3D Vision projectors. I think you can do 3D TV Play with side-by-side 1080p, which visually translates to straight 1080p when in 3D.
But, 1920*1080=2,073,600 pixels. 1280*720*2=1,843,200 pixels.
It's *2 because the 720p projector runs at 120Hz, so visually you get 2x the pixels. It's just not that different.

In that case, wouldn't you multiply the 1080p by two as well, as that runs at 120 on a monitor?
Anyway, I have to agree with bo3b. I just bought a projector (W1070) and the drop down to 720p is much less noticeable than it is on my monitor. I won't pretend you can't tell the difference, but it is quite minor.
As for whether or not I'd recommend it, I'm undecided at this point (but I emphasise that I'm still in the process of setting it up). I've got it set up so the screen size is about 113 inches at the moment. If I sit at normal viewing distance from my 27 inch monitor and hold up a tape measure at arm's length with one eye closed, it measures about 17cm. If I do the same to my projector it's about 18.5cm. So really, the actual viewing area as a proportion of my vision is pretty similar. The difference would probably be a little more for a 24 inch though. However it just looks/feels good to game on a screen the size of a wall, I guess that's a psychological thing.
You could always do what I', currently doing: find a store with a reasonable change of mind refund policy (if one exists in your area), and try it out.

Not in the projector case, because we can't get 120Hz 1080p projectors. In the monitor case, that is right, and probably gives you a noticeable improvement in resolution because it's so close.

I think the issue is the HDMI protocol that projectors use, which only allows 1080px2 at 24fps and not 60fps because it doesn't have the available bandwidth.

Actually a quick peek at the Nvidia's 3DVisionPRO site reveals quite a few 1080P 120Hz 3D projectors (60FPS per eye) however the cost of owning a copy will set you back equal or more then the cost of a new car! (and a fairly expensive Nvidia Quadro card to drive it!)

(but also 2560x1440@71.92Hz - 16/9)
... and 3840x1608@59.94Hz (2.40:1)
So forget your dlp, led,lcd, or whatever and get a good crt projector

(i got on a calibrated 9502LC Ultra (bought for 1000€) a contrast of ... infinite:1 (>1.000.000:1)
...forgot to mention that i do use the ANALOGUE output ... with 400 Mhz ramdac no pobem to get 1080p@120

If I remember correctly that was a use that bought the PredatorZ650 and 3DTVplay was working ok in 720p.
I see no reason why it shouldn't. Even if it doesn't work out of the box an edid mod is possible.
