I thought I remember that Bastion could be played and looked good in 3D Vision, now I really can't find anything on it ...
The game itself is on 'sale' on humblebundle.com part of their new weekly sale. It's pay what you want, theoretically you can pay .01 for it but you'll [s]probably go to hell[/s] only get a steam key for $1 or more.
The game itself is well worth $1 in 2D, wish I could confirm the 3D.

If I remember it's a 2D game. OpenGL or something; 3D didn't kick in for me anyway. Could be wrong though...
It's a pretty quirky game, with a cool narrative gimmick.

Thats not actually entirely true. The characters and enemies are cel shaded polygons. The backgrounds are 2D, and so I don't see how that will play nicely in 3D if it all.

No it didnt stop Rayman, but thats a different game. This game isnt 3D, and the devs said in an interview there arent any polys. Maybe they were wrong, I dunno, but anyway its only 2D unfortunately.

Yeah I looked into this some time ago and even contacted the devs about it. This game isn't 3D, they use 2D sprites almost like a Flash game. So even if you were able to get a stereo image it would all be same depth since there is no depth info.

But it's not all 2D sprites right? I'm pretty sure I read that all the enemies and characters were cel shaded polygons. hence why it is listed as a cell shaded game:

But still, you would end up with 3D characters walking (floating) over a 2d image, despite the fact it is isometric. Aka, I'm sure it would look wrong no matter how you set the 3D.

Rayman Origins was made to be played in 3D, it is a Nintento 3Ds game, every 3Ds game adds support to 3D, that is why they just adapted that to the PC version, but games that are made in 2d, without even trying to simulate 3D, will never be easily transformed to 3D, this would only work, if the scenario was developed thinking in that, taking mountains closer to the screen, and keeping other stuff to the background...
Maybe in a close future, you can get softwares to try to simulate 3D, that will check color variations and add a 3D effect to the objects, but this is never "perfect" and a lot of bugs will remain...

Yes I know, I'm not an idiot I know how 2D and 3D games work. The reason I thought it might be was because of the link to the youtube video "Bastion Trailer 3D"

Rayman Origins was made to be played in HD, a year later they released the 3ds version. I wouldn't say they adapted a 3ds version of the game for PC, if anything they adapted the original HD version.
Most likely it's just dumb luck that it even works at all, there's no 3D options in the menu, like Tomb Raider, and it's not 3D Vision Ready. It was probably designed in a 3D engine and instead of having the layers on top of each other, which would cause graphical glitches, they added distance between the layers, which in turn adds depth. Just so you know polygons don't have to be three dimensional, the things most people would call 'sprites' in 3D games are just 2 flat triangles that make up a square or rectangle.

Other then doom, when 'sprites' were literally a two-dimensional poo stain spread unevenly across the screen. Lord knows why I still think it's awesome.
On a more serious note, I have played a good few 2D games that work in Nvidia (unrated games). A.R.E.S. is but one example. It's a polygon based game with sprites for scenery and characters and animation. The sprite layers just become layered 3D. Not the best of games, but a good demonstration of how sprites can become 3D when not intended.
Another one is Limbo.
The problem with Bastion however is that it is isometric. How would the driver know if 'the kid' is behind or in front of a 2d pillar. That's why I think you dreamt you played it in 3D ;-)

I never said I played it in 3D ... just that I thought I remembered it could be. I was wrong obviously and I'll admit that but just because a game is '2D' doesn't mean it can't be played in 3D and ... well ... bah! ef it! Is it my turn yet?

I have A.R.E.S. don't know when or where I bought it, but it looks good though, I'll have to try it in 3D. Reminds me of ABUSE ... just like this thread does. Lol.

Sorry didn't have time to dig up the reference sooner, I think I had even more solid evidence at one point from their dev site feedback, but it's all 2D, they rendered in 3D and then exported to a 2D .PNG, so it's literally just 2D images meshed together on a 2D plane, no depth info at all.
http://www.cgsociety.org/index.php/CGSFeatures/CGSFeatureSpecial/supergiant_games_bastion
Turns out that it's not a combination of 2D and 3D; the main character and enemies were created, colored and animated in 3D and then the animations were exported into a series of PNG image files. The PNG files were then sequenced together into the game engine to create the animations. Any color adjustments that had to be made meant that they would have to go back into the 3D base, re-export the PNG files and re-implement them into the game. The reason why they went this route was to keep the whole game running within a 2D engine and to avoid developing the game with a 3D engine which often proves to be a gigantic chore for game developers that don't have an incredibly huge staff.
Their staff is like 5 ppl IIRC so it makes sense, but yeah this game style and graphics would've lent itself perfectly to 3D imo.

Fair enough Chiz, have to take your word on that. Other sites say it is cel-shaded, e.g.

The fact that your link mentions the process leads me to believe you are right. Either way though, it doesn't really matter. The game looks absolutely stunning regardless.

Going back to this... this is a pretty average game, but the 3D works great. Wack up the convergence quite high and it really adds to it. It's only about 2 hours long, but was a good distraction.
