Typically they do, but it's not always a given.
Like I said, I only have seen two LG models that locked out non native resolutions in 3D. It's certainly possible for others to do the same.
GibsonRed mentioned some new displays were unveiled at Computex with DP 1.4 inputs. That's good enough for 4K 120Hz 3D, if supported. Keep in mind that only Pascals have DP 1.4 outputs though.
But it's possible that there might be some new projectors. You should call the manufacturers, they might have something capable of 1080P@120Hz now.
There was that Ultra Short Throw LG that has checkerboard support in the menu, it might be capable of 1080i@60
