Stereo-In-A-Window on XP - It Works! (thanks Nvidia!)
  1 / 4
Well, my life just got a LOT better! For those users out there with Quadros and considering 3D Vision for windowed applications, you're in luck. I have no idea how crucial any of these things are on their own, and YMMV, but here's how I got there.

I work for U.S. Geological Survey and, like most other federal agencies, we use XP Pro exclusively and there are no plans to migrate to Vista. If we are going to use 3D Vision with our 3D GIS applications, it'll be on XP or not at all. When the 186.18 drivers advertised XP support, I thought 'we're in!'. And, after a lot of stumbling around, we are.

First, obviously, I installed the 186.18 XP Quadro driver. I'm using 64-bit XP and an FX 3700, so I got that one.
I downloaded the 64-bit Vista 3D Vision only driver and extracted the contents to their own folder. (If you use the executable, you'll get an error message telling you your OS isn't supported and the installation will abort.)
I navigated to that folder, found the nvstereo.inf (3D stereo driver) and nvstusb.inf (stereo usb driver) files and installed them by right-clicking them selecting 'Install' from the menu. The emitter was now detected.
I opened the Control Panel and on the Program Settings tab (my 3D app is esri's arcmap), I selected/enabled:
Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode
Enable overlay = On
Stereo - Display mode = Generic active stereo (with NVIDIA IR Emitter)
Stereo Enable = On
Stereo - Swap eyes = Off
Triple buffering = On
Unified back/depth buffer = On
Vertical sync = On

The others, I kept as "Use global setting". Again, not sure which of these are necessary for stereo-in-a-window, but I suspect keeping stereo on and v-sync on are the main ones. Just for fun, I used the included 3-pin DIN connector/2.5mm cable and selected "on-board DIN connector (with NVIDIA IR Emitter) for Stereo - Display mode and that worked as well.

3DForMe, you may need to place another order! We will be.

Using 3D Vision & Quadro 4000 for GIS apps on 64-bit Windows 7/Dell T7500 Workstation

I have 32-bit XP, a FX 3400, 3D Vision Kit, and a SyncMaster 2233RZ. I am able to get stereo in a window partially working - approximately the bottom half of the LCD is in stereo but the top half is not. I am able to move the window around or just scroll the image inside the window and everything on the bottom half of the LCD will sync in stereo but nothing on the top half. The top half of the LCD looks exactly like it does without the glasses on - I can see both of the images all of the time. Everything works fine on a CRT so I'm thinking my SyncMaster might be bad. Even on the bottom half of the SyncMaster, there is more ghosting than with the CRT.

Your configuration is correct, and thanks for finding a way to help XP users while the installers is getting built. There’s one more thing: If you want you can plug the mini-din to 1/8” cable in from the board to the emitter, change the Stereo – Display Mode to On-board DIN connector (with NVIDIA IR Emitter) and get a hardline connection to control the glasses.

SimWright’s

Your GPU is pre-G80 so it won’t work with 3D Vision.

No, I'm asking for which Quadro cards will work with the new driver for OpenGL quad-buffered stereo on XP.

Hi again BigLars,

I forgot to ask, are you using any fotogrammetric stereopair software?

It seems the problem only occurs when using this kind of software, even with the 3D Vision glasses:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=559147

Does the problem occurs only when using a Quadro Fx 3400 with the 3d Vision glasses?
Can anyone else confirms this?

I'm using PurVIEW and StereoAnalyst, two stereo programs that integrate into ArcMap. StereoAnalyst works in both XP and Vista and PurVIEW works, for the moment, in XP only (though I understand that Vista/W7 support in the works). I haven't seen any issues such as the ones you described but I'm using a newer FX 3700. The FX 3400's older architecture may not support the 3D Vision alternative. Both the FX 1700 and 1800 are less than $500 U.S. but I haven't heard if those will work with 3D Vision or not. That list, by the way, is imminent.

I run VISTA64 with 285GTX.
Is there a chance that lightwave (openGL) will sometime run with my card. I do more gaming than modeling( hobbyist) so
a quadro card is out of question for me.

Aye, what about non-Quadrp XP users? Is there some technical problem that won't allow regular video cards to produce the 3d image in XP? I would very much like XP support.

Nvidia, will only provide 3D Vision XP Drivers for GeForce based cards, in their own words:
"...If there are enough requests..."

Hate to say it, but yeah... we really need XP support. The extra framerate would help more than ever.

@BigLars

StereoAnalyst, well thats the software from Erdas, isnt it? We used LPS in Imagine 8.7 early in 2002 or 2003.
There´s a "catch" though, as far as i can recall, in Stereoanalyst the Z motion in produced when left image cursor moves apart from the right image cursor, but in most Photogrammetric softwares, like the one we now use " Summit", the Z motion is produced when both background stereo images move apart from each other while the cursor is fixed at the "work" center.
I really need some feedback concerning this, since i´m almost certain the ghosting effect is more active under the second type of Z motion. You also mentioned PurView, i never worked with that software before, does the Z motion behaves the same as StereoAnalyst?
