Is nVidia really the way it was meant to be played ... in 3D?

I'm getting really tired of running (polygon) games and having them not display properly in 3D(stereoscopic). I usually check around to see if a game works well in 3D before I'll even consider purchasing it. Well I had seen some really good screenshots of Deadlight over on 3DVisionLive, so I purchased it. Currently the game is bundled with 4 others for only $9.99 on Amazon ... http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B1ULJI0 ... which is a steal to say the least. Thanks Tony! Imagine my surprise to see it look like absolute @#$% when I ran it last night, apparently those sexy screenshots on 3DVisionLive weren't actually taken using 3D Vision drivers, instead they were taken using TriDef drivers, while I thank the uploader and he did list it in the specs ... it still just somehow seems a little wrong, maybe even misleading, that pics taken using TriDef drivers are up on 3DVisionLive. Even so I'm actually glad they were there to enlighten me. While we're running around trying to drum up developer awareness and support for 3D Vision in games and Helix, and others, are doing their best to fix things after the fact, what is nVidia actually doing? It usually goes like this ... a new game comes out ... they update the drivers ONLY to tell you it's @#$% in 3D, meanwhile Helix fixes it, TriDef fixes it, yet nVidia just adds a profile that does nothing but tell you it doesn't look very good ... and well we can obviously see that for ourselves. One of my biggest issues is the majority of us actually had to pay for this 3D, it wasn't even free in the drivers like it used to be (legacy drivers? back when I first got into 3D gaming) and should have always been. I had to buy Windows 7, an emitter (and eventually an emitter cable) I didn't even need, DLP-Link here, some of you purchased a 3D Vision Ready monitor, 3D Vision Kit or paid for 3DTV Play just in order to be able to use the stereoscopic version of drivers for your nVidia video card(s) and those said drivers aren't even being properly updated to support the 3D you and I paid for. So here I am frustrated to say the least on a forum of one of their technologies, might I add the one that gets the most attention from their users and seemingly the least from them, and I'm seriously thinking about trying out and most likely purchasing TriDef. I'm tired of waiting for nVidia to do or say something substantial enough to warrant my attention or anymore of my money for that matter. Many people have voiced the same sentiment as I am and it keeps going unnoticed, or should I say ignored. From what I read at least ATI had the decency to work out a deal with TriDef for their customers, that's way more than I can say for nVidia at this point. Quite honestly if they can't work this out themselves they should be working with someone else. Helix Mod is basically doing all the work for them and they just reap the rewards. 3D Vision wouldn't be as great as it is if it was up to nVidia, the great games were either designed that way and/or fixed by Helix Mod, which I'm extremely grateful for. Thanks Helix, really if it wasn't for you, and the others that help you, I wouldn't have enjoyed over half of the games I've played in 3D so far. But it really shouldn't be this way if they truly want to sit back and let the 3D community do the work for them then they should at the very least give them the tools to do so! Make the 3D drivers more easily accessible, tweakable, and robust for them. The 3D drivers/utilities need to see a major overhaul, it's what the customers deserve here. If nVidia isn't going to put the work into it , like TriDef seems to be doing, then they should open up a dialog between the 3D community and themselves to find out what needs to be fixed, changed, and streamlined to make the 3D communities job easier, in dx9 cases, and maybe even possible, in dx10 + dx11 cases. edit: removed quotes as they didn't display properly, maybe they do over on TriDef's forum. ;)

It is very disappointing how nvidia have took a very hands off approach regarding 3d, I have sort of lost interest at the moment, I blame the lack of high quality 3d content, hating the ghosting on my Panasonic plasma, and the hmz-t1's comfort level, even when modded. When tv can do a completely ghost free image, i might roll back in, but i think that's me done with 3d for the moment, at least until the oculus rift is out. :)

I agree with the OP (and thanks for a very well written post) - nVidia have sat on their hands for far too long, and I think their "support" for 3D is insulting. In fact, if I'm brutally honest I think its disgusting. Andrew is no longer the guy in charge of 3D, it took us months to find out, but the new project manager hasn't been announced or come on here to give any updates. At the very least they should provide tools so the community can fix the problems they are more than happy to ignore. I LOVE 3D to bits, its the best upgrade I ever got for my PC in 18 years of PC gaming and I've always liked nvidia hardware and driver support, however I despise the fact we are being completely ignored here, and that nvidia don't appear to be pushing for propper 3D support in games. Helix and the others in the community are the ONLY reason I still have hope for 3D, and I can only hope Oculus Rift takes off in a big way as a reasonable alternative.

I hope Nvidia steps up their support for all the new dx11 games that are inevitable to come out in the next couple of years. I'm planning on buying a new Lightboost monitor soon. I love 3d Vision, they support SLI (very important for smooth frames) and DX11 (sort of). None of the competing drivers support more than 1 video card. Until that happens, TriDef, Iz3d, or any other driver are out of the question. I must use Nvidia. Please nvidia start doing something more! I don't care how good shaders look in future games, or how many polys a game displays on screen, going back to 2d is a huge reduction in graphical detail. If I'm having to play next year's games in 2d, frankly, I'll be sad.

Now lets not get "silly?" here like Mike and use colorful words this is Nvidias site and no one has to put up with that kind of talk. You can talk to them and say it right to their face... yeah didnt thank so. I don't know I think Nvidia gets its feet wet in to many things. I just cant see 3D Vision going on much more. Just look at how many NEW monitors are coming with the 3D glasses, none that I can find. I have Trideff and there are TONS of games that have problems and some that dont have a profile still. I have both 3D vision and Trideff. I find I use Trideff so much more. You have Line Interlaced,Side by side, top bottom. And I can use ATI or Nvidia. Yes 3D vision looks clearer, same rez yet passive is so much easier..for me. But guys if you have been around Nvidia has ALWAYS treated us like they could careless. Look at Andrew.. please takes less then 5min to sign on and say something.

If he wants to give us some reassurance, it would be nice to see some screenies from a few up and coming games, like the ones he posted of Catwoman previously, It at least showed us that there was some level of interactivity between Batman game Devs and Nvidia.

Tridef is a much better company and has much better work ethic/support/everything but mainly due to helix nvidia is still the way to go as far as support. If there ever is a point where games cant be fixed anymore with helixmod then I'd say Tridef is the better option. You can use tridef on any display as long as your display support SIDE BY SIDE and still use 3D Vision.

The only problem with that is that there is a little bit heavier performance hit because they must be used in tandem.

I also found that performance in Tridef is quite poor, but its nice to know its there. Much prefer the OSD in Tridef to the crap Nvidia ones.

TriDef certainly works better with some resolutions, refresh rates and formats than others. So play around until you get it dialed in with whatever works best for your specific configuration.
