Whats up with the crosshair in older Soruce engine games?
I noticed that the 3d vision crosshair has been broken in older source titles for quite a while now. In portal and Half Life source the 3d vision crosshair just doesn't move. There is two images so it isn't 2d but the two images don't move unlike in Portal 2 where it works properly. These titles have been broken for months now. I don't even know if the crosshair ever worked properly in those titles. Am I alone on this?

I've noticed the same thing in HL2 recently. Haven't thought too much of it since the crosshair is "in" quite a ways. Works properly in portal 2 and L4D2 though.

Can remove crosshair using console of any source game.(which I think I did for hl2) Can either use nvidia lasersight. Or right click nvidia lasersight.

I believe it's partly an engine issue.

I've had pretty good experience with Portal 2.

I'm not sure exactly where the border between 2D and decent 3D crosshair goes but intrestingly
Fakefactory's Cinematic Mod which runs all HL2 games on the most recent engine experience while not perfect but pretty decent crosshair behaviour.

Finally don't assume anything about lasersight in the older games as I have never been able to enable it in CSS for instance.

actually the nvidia lasersight is tied in with source engine crosshairs. In L4D2 if you turn off the lasersight the games crosshair becomes 2d. turn it on again and the games crosshair is 3d. Does the same thing in HL2. Except that now when the lasersight is on, it's not dynamic... just pushed into the screen to match the depth percentage.

If you rename the .exe to something else (like masseffect2.exe). It will let you use nvidia lasersight.

Does changing the exe name cause any problems with steam?

I mean all source games use steam.

@flugan rename it then I believe you can add it as a "non-steam game" OR follow this GUIDE(Applies to steam/origin)

@eqzitara Quick question, have you actually done it yourself successfully or are you suggesting things that might work? From my test it appears that hl2.exe is replaced during game load.

I renamed my left4dead2 and it forces the nvidia lasersight to show just as a test(was trying to figure out how it worked) and it worked both laser sight and crosshair stayed. But if I left it as left4dead2.exe I couldnt get lasersight to show.

From what I understand if you have a "source game" and you start it up and run it in 3d. When you push the lasersight button it gives the signal for code in game to push the crosshair into depth. The nvidia profile itself(hl2.exe/left4dead2.exe) prevents the lasersight from showing though when signal is given. I didnt test this with multiple games. Just left4dead2 Id imagine it would work for all though. Hope it works out for you

Thank you for testing although I would not consider l4d2 to be an old source game.

The nvidia profile seems to work for some games (by moving the standard crosshair into depth)

Very brief tests (Quickly testing the pretty good default 3D crosshair with standard profile.

Works:
Day of Defeat: Source
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Portal
Portal 2 (Native 3D Pointer no Nvidia crosshair)
Team Fortress 2

Does not work:
!!! Counter-strike: Source
Half-Life 2 (Probably Part of the crosshair is 3D part is 2D)
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch (Part of the crosshair is 3D part is 2D)
Half-Life 2: Episode One (Part of the crosshair is 3D part is 2D)
!!! Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
!!! Half-Life Deathmatch: Source
!!! Half-Life: Source

The games marked with !!! is probably running a very old version of the source engine that still supports dx7.
If you can get the nvidia crosshair to work in any of these four titles it would actually target old source games.

It is clear that the 3D crosshair works quite well in many of the games and is not even needed in Portal 2.
