But really, try not to take umbrage, we have a lot of non-English speakers, and it's easiest just to assume that it's second-language on a smart phone.
But then the terrorists win :p In my experience, non-native speakers are more likely to write properly. With mistakes, perhaps, but with decipherable sentence structure, since they don't have the luxury of getting blase about shortcuts. I have nothing but respect for people who make an effort to write in a second language. It's people who don't make an effort in their first, and expect the reader to take the effort to pick up their slack, that get my goat. I always write properly on a smartphone :p

I'm also in the no patience for laziness camp. A particularly lazy post basically says that the writer values his time much more than that of the people he wants to read and help him. For people who are not native English speakers, I have a ton of patience and respect. I'm an English teacher myself, so I realize the amount of effort and courage that takes. I also have to communicate outside of my native language every day, and I do so imperfectly. However, there are mistakes that native English speakers make (due to laziness or honest mistakes) and there are mistakes that non native English speakers make. They're easy to tell apart. I have a ton of patience and respect for people who operate with disabilities as well. Some of the students I teach fall into this category. Perhaps the OP really does have trouble putting sentences together. If he didn't display a bad attitude anyway, I would have felt bad for calling it out.

Yep, don't disagree with either of you. I don't have any patience for lazy or deliberately obtuse writers either. I have a writer friend who insists on using only lower case, no punctuation, but with proper sentence breaks by white space. Not lazy, deliberate as a writing style, and man it's annoying. Whenever I see this sort of laziness or sloppiness on the writer's part, I don't call them out on it, because it's not going to change anything and just changes the forum tone in a negative way. They'll just get mad and huff off, so it's more harm to us than them. If it's lazy/offensive/incomprehensible like that, I just don't bother to even try to help. I just hate to see potential 3D users storm out in a huff.

We should Kickstarter this. And that's the trailer: "With America lost... It's terrorists VS grammar Nazis!" An epic 3D puzzle game.

Well I am going to dissent here, because I just read this thread and can't believe my eyes. Someone comes on this forum looking for HELP with his 3D Vision gear and he gets nothing but snooty, pompous, arrogant insults about something entirely unrelated to his request for help. He was not rude, he was not trolling, he was informative. Who gives a fuck about his grammar - if you don't like it go away and read another thread, you have absolutely no right to be rude and insulting and make him feel bad. And then berate and humiliate him for getting pissed-off at you, as he if is somehow being unreasonable - I am angry and this was not even directed at me, so I can imagine how he feels. All this bullshit about what a "bloated sense of entitlement" he feels because he can't be bothered to write properly, and he is somehow making your life difficult having to read it. Screw that - you don't have to read anything. Seriously what the fuck? This is not YOUR forum, it's a community forum and some of us want to see more people participate, not have it treated like it's some kind of elite frat boy college that you have to pass a spelling test to get into.

I respectfully disagree. He did not provide the information we needed to help him after several requests, and after a polite request to write more clearly and a second (less polite) affirmation of this request, he launched into a profanity-laden tirade which got people a little riled. We probably could/should have handled it better though.

As pirate said, we could have handled it better. I certainly could have been more polite, as I've already admitted, and will admit again. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, and I was clearly rougher around the edges than I realised, and than I should have been. But I don't see how me or anyone else has "insulted", "humiliated", or "berated" him. The worst thing I said to him was that his writing style was "inconsiderate", which is hardly a kick in the nuts. I guess the "verbal diarrhoea" thing might have been a problem. Where I come from, "verbal diarrhoea" is a common phrase that means you're spouting a stream-of-consciousness word dump. It's barely more insulting than calling someone a "blabbermouth". I self-apply it all the time. I thought it was universal, but I guess if you're not used to it, it must sound pretty hostile. The only other "offensive" things I said were that he should grow up and that he was talking crap - after he called me names, swore at me, and threatened me with physical violence, for fuck's sake. Um, yes mike, threatening someone with physical violence is "somehow being unreasonable". I don't really know what a frat boy is, but I this wasn't anything about elitism or trying to make people look bad. I don't give a shit about someone's spelling or their grammar skills. What I care about is that if someone enters a public forum asking for strangers to take time and help them, then they should make an effort to make the experience easy for those trying to help them. We ALL care about that. We all prefer people on forums to be clear about their problem, respectful to others, provide systems specs and screenshots if needed, and so on. Most people have a standard of forum etiquette that they think is very important. You clearly see your own one as important - just look how pissed off you got when you decided that I violated it! It's not your forum either, Mike, so you can't tell me that your standards of conduct are sacred while mine are meaningless. Well, I happen to believe that it's disrespectful to dump all your thoughts into one massive paragraph that takes 5 times longer to read, without bothering to separate it into basic, coherent sentences. Adding a dot and a space after your sentences doesn't require a bloody Oxford degree. I guess it doesn't matter if one or two people write like that, but if everyone did, the internet would be a nightmare for everyone, not least those who aren't native English speakers and therefore already need to work harder. No, it's not a really massive deal, and yes, I probably made a little more of it than I need to. But the crazy shitstorm that ensued seems overblown to me. I think we all probably need to take some deep breaths.

I definitely agree that this has become overblown. If we could do this thread again, I definitely would not have asked the OP to make more of an effort. It's obvious now that doing so turned out badly. I hesitated when I wrote it, and I should have went with that instinct. But as I said in that post, I was feeling grumpy, and I did it anyway. It won't happen again. The advice to just leave it and do something else is good. I still largely agree with Volnaiskra that at least an effort should made to reach a basic level of readability, both out of respect to the other members who will read it and to simply facilitate communication. But again, I won't complain about that again on this board. Lastly, I'll just say that I really hate to see unnecessary drama on these boards. I think we should move on.

Well guys.. English isn't my native language for example, and i'm sure many people from different countries that come here to give some help or to be helped are not perfect in english. Furthermore, they may be bad sometimes and hard to read and understand, but.. We are here to share experience, help each other, but not teach each other punctuation and other stuff like this. We all should remember - this is international forum. IMHO!
