Didn't initially catch this when I saw Oculus hired some guy from Nvidia/MIT. It's the Douglas Lanman that was behind this.
The idiot! He used Doom 3 in his demo, Zenimax will be sueing nvidia now!
Doom 3 bfg is open source.
TBH, Zenimax is in there rights to sue Carmack/Oculus. He was actively working with a company using there technology to promote it and get it started. I really don't think Oculus would even get off the ground without Carmack. He pretty much was the person who got Newell and Palmer in same room as well.
He pretty much covered his ass ahead of time by getting Doom 3 open sourced so he could do this BUT if he was doing this during company time and using resources from company its seriously his fault. Even if he was though its hard to prove though.
Without the full details which we will never get probably. It just sounds REALLY bad that Carmack got them to open source doom then immediately after started using it to get the Oculus Rift started. Carmack was planning on using Doom 3 BFG as launch title for product as well [it was even included as launch title for the kickstarter]. The fact that it was cancelled and everyone was refunded WAY before the buyout makes it even more suspect.

Yah, that whole thing is pretty sketchy, especially if he had a "no compete" clause.
Did you see that Carmack got a Bafta award last month?
It's a good watch.

I agree completely with your assessment. Without Carmack putting a stamp of approval on Luckey's headset, there is no way his headset would have gotten traction on Kickstart. I know for me personally I went back and forth about backing it, and Carmack saying it was the "best tech-demo ever created" swayed me.
That BFG thing was pretty sleazy, but it's always hard to know what the real story is. Oculus has always made these sort of weird moves, but as a general rule they try to make it not sting as much. For missing out on BFG they gave money back.
It seems to me that there is some back room high-drama with this stuff, because Valve didn't seem very interested in making a headset and had Michael Abrash forever. Then once Oculus poached him, it suddenly seemed to be ON, and they actually shipped something and are making Oculus look bad at the same time.
Oculus in the meantime seemed like they were sort of coasting with their big bank and dream team, until Valve stood to ship first. Lots of big egos involved, no doubt.
