Any 28-42 inch HDTVs that work with 3d vision?
  1 / 2
Hi, I wanted to know if there are any available HDTVs in the range of more less 28-42 inch that do work with 3d vision. I have been using a samsung 32' hdtv as my fullhd monitor for a while and although I'm looking forward 3d gaming, I just can't go back to 23 inch monitor anymore, however I see that it's either 23-24' monitors or monster 60' hdtvs, do you know of any tv around about that size that may support 3d vision, either now or soon enough?

Nothing in that range schedules in the short future, I guess you'll have to wait until next year.

Samsung PS42B450 works well in 3D and is relatively inexpensive, several times brighter, has a larger and more accurate colour gamut, hugely greater contrast ratio, vastly better refresh technology and 1080p 2D viewing capacity than the available 3D LCDs, it can also with IZ3D drivers provide 120Hz glasses free 2D gaming on a grand scale. You are also not locked into only using nvidia hardware and software with this option.

Read the forums those that have both a small LCD and the Plasma clearly prefer the plasma even though its improved accuracy and picture can highlight defeciencies within the drivers used, especially convergance issues that plague nvidia, as all artifacts are scaled up as per the relative volume of the screens.

If you are willing to wait some, Samsung is due to release some LED-backlit 3-D ready LCDs later this year starting with a 40" version. That is what I am now holding out for.

+1. LG has announced at least one 3D-ready LCD expected mid-2010, too.

I was sooooo tempted to take advantage of the cheap LCD prices this holiday season and replace my outdated TV, but decided to make do with my 3 year old Samsung 32" until there's a 120Hz screen that will work with 3dV.

I was stuck with an old SD crt, so I was happy to replace it with a 42" samsung plasma. Yeah, the 3d has problem in games that don't have a seperate aspect ratio control, but man the picture quality is sweet in all 2d material and 3d movies are just great. It is amazing how much better my plasma looks than the 52" 1080p LCD I sold. It was hard to even play games on that thing because the ghosting and trailing of the pixels. The pixels on this plasma are perfectly smooth, the blacks are amazing and the colors are incredible. It is a shame about the 3d stereo being so lackluster due to the aspect ratio issues.

How are you using 3d Vision with a 42" plasma? Did you luck out and get a demo model from CES?? lol

It is one of those Samsung plasmas. I got it for a song (Best $400 I ever spent, except for the 2x gtx280s I bought for 200 a piece back when they were going for 600). http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+42%2...d=1218064392359

They are compatible in generic DLP mode.

I really wouldn't recommend it for 3d gaming as it has non-square pixels and green tinge ghosting. However, the option is there, which is nice, especially on a set that was way cheap and looks amazing otherwise. Playing games and watching movies on this blows my old lcd I bought for 2200 way out of the water. Kind of makes me sad that I didn't go for it in the first place. I was too hung up on resolution, which really doesn't make as big of a difference as I thought.

He uses either the Samsung PN42A450 (1 1/2 year old) or the renamed PN42B450 (6 month old). But they are basically the same TV with a minor update (i think they changed the digital TV receiver, not sure).
It's only 1024x768 (anamorphic) resolution and uses the Texas Instrument DLP checkerboard input (so 3D is 1/2 resolution). The TV can't up/downscale 3D you have to feed it with the exact matching resolution but it works.
I haven't tested it myself but from what I read it suffers from ghosting (especially the green colour).

There's also a 50" version which uses an HDready resolution with square pixels (so no more issues with aspect ratios).

I have the PN42B450 model.

Indeed, movies look pretty good though in 3d. Also, a few games work quite well with not too much ghosting. I bought it mostly because it was so inexpensive and looked so great. I wouldn't buy it for the express purpose of gaming in 3d. I will eventually upgrade to a good DLP or LCD, but it will be difficult to part with the image quality on this screen. I haven't seen a DLP or LCD match it yet... certainly not anywhere near my price range.

"It's only 1024x768 (anamorphic) resolution and uses the Texas Instrument DLP checkerboard input (so 3D is 1/2 resolution)."

It displays 120 fully rendered images @ per second at its native 1376x768 resolution, the best it can do with its 1080p processing limitation, dual 1376x768 may have half the pixels of 1920x1080 but it is not half resolution, do you call 720p half HD resolution. Checkerboard sends through 2 images in a cycle @ 60 Hz but the display does not render them simultaneously so it does display a 120Hz image unlike some interlaced methods.

"I haven't tested it myself but from what I read it suffers from ghosting (especially the green colour)."

Wrong , ghosting is much less of an issue despite the attributes of the image being magnified because of the screen size than on the 120Hz nvidia exclusive LCDs, check for your self.

If you have a pn42, would you be willing to post all of your settings to alleviate ghosting, because my green ghosting is pretty bad and also how you deal with the aspect ratio issues, or which games you play that can adjust the aspect seperately from the resolution?

I would really appreciate sometips as I would love to use it for 3d gaming more often.

I have the 50 inch and 3D only works in 1376x768 or 1024x768 (never use) resolutions, most games including Bioshock2, Dirt 2, MW2, Avatar, L4D2 and DAO the only games I am currently playing natively support 1376x768 resolution so I never change the aspect ratio.

For viewing settings I basically use the dynamic preset with the back lite set to 10, most of the ghosting I see relates to convergance issues with nvidia's drivers highlighted by the clarity and size of the screen (these same waeknesses are less obvious not absent on smaller and dimmer screens). Decreasing depth was needed (unlike what I believe you and others including myself like) with the nvidia drivers as the convergance adjustment in the driver is inadequate or the settings are RS when the view switches to cinematics etc.

These driver related artifacts are why I recently switched to iZ3D DLP drivers but these can not work with nvidia 3D vision glasses/emitter. The iZ3D driver performs much better and offers greater adjustment of seperation and convergance, auto convergance and application of on-the-fly presets on my Samsung screen. As a bit of trivia I also found that the nvidia glasses perform much worse than the Samsung SSG1000 glasses I replaced them with > brightness, switching, sync etc even though they are older tech than the nvidia glasses. It seems the nvidia system was designed as a seperate ecological system rather than part of a wider 3D revolution, as their dim slow refreshing glasses and screens match each other and reduce weaknesses in the drivers performance and implementation but works pretty good within its narrow functional parameters.

Well I think I'll also wait for the new TVs if they're coming by mid-2010, thanks for the suggestions. I read most of the posts in this forum and I can't wait to play many of those games that you all mention on 3d. I'll lurk in the forums meantime buiding the hype until then /wallbash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wallbash:' />

I'll lurk in the forums meantime buiding the hype until then /wallbash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wallbash:' />

Yep I have the PS50B450 (Australian model) and have put a lot of input in these forums in regards to it.
I agree it's a very sweet screen and previously was also hung up on 1080P which I had 46" Sharp LCD to take of business there.

Again I know it's Nvidia's glasses that are half the cause with ghosting and like you are saying now the drivers.
I just can't ever seem to find cheap edim glasses wireless glasses or any others so I can switch to try for a while.
The Samsung glasses I tried everywhere to get when I first got my screen but never had any luck, plus I live in Australia so can't slip into BestBuy etc :)

What I am wondering is if we can use Xpand DLP LINK glasses $150.00, we do use checkerboard and handle 3D via the same chip as DLP TV or projector but will they work.
I wanted to take the plunge and just get them recently and if it didn't work I would save for when I do have a projector like the viewsonic PJ6211 which I owned for a day and sold which had that setting in the menu. Anyway currently out of stock on their site now I want to get them

What you think will they work? Very keen to try another bit of kit rather than as you said this piece of slow refreshing ....
