Google Earth quirk
Under drivers 280.26 and 285.62 (at least) if the "Hide stereoscopic 3D effects when game starts" is on and Google Earth is in DirectX mode, then Google Earth works unusably slow. If the option is turned off, then Google Earth works at usual speed with 3D on or off. Of course using OpenGL instead of DirectX also solves the problem.

Is this a known problem?

The Hide Stereoscopic 3D just means show the app in 2D, but its still rendering 3D under the covers, which is causing the app to be slow.

The better way to fix this is to change the behavior for when 3D runs. You want to switch it to be Only for fullscreen applications.

More info on that is here: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2955/kw/window%20mode/session/L3RpbWUvMTMyMDg4ODE5Mi9zaWQvcWsyeEVKSWs%3D

Hi Andrew,

on a related note: Do you know why this option ("Select when the display is in 3D mode") is greyed and locked to "Only whily 3D programs run" on my system? I don't use the external emitter but an Acer GN245HQ monitor with an integrated emitter. But the option should work with that, too as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately "Select when the display is in 3D mode:" is permanently grayed out.

No SLI is in use (not possible of course with my setup).

When you browse to the control panel and its grayed out, is a 3D app open?

No, the browser (Firefox) is the only program running.
