problems with only one game LOTRO geforce 3dvision flashes every 5-10 secs.
  1 / 2
Hi there, I am hoping someone can either help out or give advice on this one....

1st let me say all my other 3d games work great, I am constantly blown away by the great effects and depth :) 8 hours game play, no headaches! So it is not the glasses....

But the one game I am having severe issues with is lord of the rings online. When I turn on dx10 I get what seems like white flashes every 5-10 seconds. Very annoying.... and hurts the eyes.
When I turn off dx10, the glasses engage but there is no depth or separation at all.

Unfortunately I seem to be the only person in middle earth using the geforce 3dvision... I have come across 2 posts in total by googling it and only one was related to my issue, it was someone asking if it works. Someone answered yes, and said they tried it for a short time. No other responses.

I have no other ir emitters in the room, turning the lights off did not help, moving the ir emitter did not help either. As I said above it works with 0 hitches on all my other games.

I realize it is not on the list of supported games. I am hoping you guys are working with Turbine on this one though. I know a few people who are thinking of buying it and they are asking me lot of questions on it. Being as it is an MMO a lot of my friends only play LOTRO. I tell them it is fantastic and mind blowing, but LOTRO has issues. So if anyone from nvidia... or a gamer who has gotten it working could help, I would be eternally grateful.

Also if you are a gamer who has it working could you post your LOTRO ini file? It may be I've got one or 2 odd settings that are messing it up.

Thanks in advance :)

A couple of games I get this same issue, only a couple. To solve this problem make sure you are playing at night with NO LIGHTS ON AND HAVE NO REMOTES BY YOUR T.V!!!! If you have a remote near by it can mess with your ir emitter

first thanks for the reply :) I unfortunately have tried with no lights at night and still have this issue :( No remotes in the room at all and am using the samsung monitor bundled with the 3dvision.

I am thinking it may be due to an ini issue in LOTRO as someone else posted it worked perfect for them. I probably need to turn off specular lighting or something. But as I am off to work it will have to wait till tonight. Hopefully some kind LOTRO player can paste a copy of their ini so I can check against mine :)

Thanks again. I appreciate any help.

Try re-running the setup wizard and running your 3D vision at 110Hz. I was having the same issue with WoW (especially when I overclocked my CPU) where it would flash every 10-20 seconds on 120Hz and switching the glasses refresh rate to a slower rate (110Hz) completely fixed things.

The strange thing is that I didn't seem to get any flashes at 120Hz from other games, only WoW. It's almost as if more CPU intensive games interfere with the emitter somehow.

Anyway, try it out, it might work. It's just a little flickerier (now a word), but your brain gets used to it pretty quickly.

By the way, does LOTRO track the z depth of the cursor properly? Or does the cursor float above game objects at screen depth with the HUD?

Same response as the other LOTRO topic:

DX10 doesn't seem to work (as in most DX10 games) so disable it.

Disable bloom effects in the video options. If it's enabled you will get zero stereoscopic effect.

I had some flickering in LOTRO at first, but it went away when I rebooted & charged my glasses. It looks good, but WAR is the best MMO in 3D (tried WoW, WAR & LOTRO, just my opinion. It's really really good in WAR.)

Hope this helps!

Interesting, thanks :) What you said in the other thread about the double-cursor effect worries me though, I'm a die-hard mouser (some people are better with keys, others are better with the mouse. It's like being left or right handed, ya know -- whichever one you are, you just can't change lol)

I have WoW & WAR too, but don't play either very much. But maybe that would change if it were in 3d..... My mouse finger is just itching to click "buy" ;)lol

the funny thing with my rig is I can get it working in dx10 but not dx9, I disabled the bloom filter and still no 3d effects until I dropped the quality to medium, then it worked. So I started messing with dx10, lowered the settings to high and I now get a flicker every 5 mins or so, which is more than acceptable to me. I was playing on ultra high before. But now that I've lowered the quality to high, I did some tweaking and am running a custom config. turned a few settings up and voila :) Although I did have to totally disable landscape shadows...

Just an update for any LOTRO players reading this who are considering whether to go 3d or not.

With my setup (see below), I am able to run in full 3d at Ultra High settings with full post-processing enabled with no problem as long as I keep it in DX9 (3d doesn't work at all in DX10 for me). HOWEVER, the cursor z-depth is totally off (i.e. it moves on a totally 2d plane which makes it difficult to target anything that's not immediately in front of you and sometimes gives a "double cursor" effect making it difficult to target at all). Also, names & labels (items & toons) are on a 2d plane and are difficult to read and nearly impossible to link to a specific person when the toon/item is not at the same z-depth as their name. Also, some objects like the night sky do not track properly and appear to float above everything.

Still, fyi the game is playable and gives a good 3d effect IMO, but at this point I wouldn't go 3d for the Rift or Watcher or other time when precision & timing really counts.

Hi guys,

Here's hoping the techs at nvidia do check this.

As stated above I cannot get it working in dx9 without dropping to medium settings. Yet in dx10 I can get it up to high quality. For some reason I can't fathom, I reinstalled LOTRO and it now works on very high. I had the setup detect optimal settings and it works. {where it didn't before... }

Now though I have odd bars at the side and when I increase the depth it messes with the game screen size. The game seems to shrink and increase the bars on the side as I play. Unfortunately I cannot speak for other mmo's as I only play LOTRO. I have already tried changing resolutions and it doesn't work either. Any responses or suggestions from the nvidia techs would be greatly appreciated.

That's odd. I get no 3d effect whatsoever in DX10, but run in 3d with everything maxed out in DX9 just fine. Probably depends on the gpu?
Unfortunately I cannot speak for other mmo's as I only play LOTRO.
I've checked it out in WoW & WAR also, both are what you would call "perfect" in 3d Vision (well, except for the map bug in WoW), while I would call LOTRO "acceptable". There are definitely some bugs either Turbine or nVidia (or both) need to address to get LOTRO on-board.

Is there a way to open an official "request" with nVidia since the techs don't seem to check this board anymore? I'd like to at least go on record that as a 3d Vision user it's important to me that they get LOTRO support up and running.
Hi guys,

Here's hoping the techs at nvidia do check this.

As stated above I cannot get it working in dx9 without dropping to medium settings. Yet in dx10 I can get it up to high quality. For some reason I can't fathom, I reinstalled LOTRO and it now works on very high. I had the setup detect optimal settings and it works. {where it didn't before... }

Well I contacted nvidia's main support page. These were my questions.

1) Any plans for Lotro support? {I'd hate to think I blew 700.00 for my favorite game to be unplayable.} Yes I am sad to spend 700.00 on 1 game I know...

2) I have messed around with every setting in game is there anything that can be done to fix the problems described above? {bars on side, mouse split, etc.}

3) Why is LOTRO the only major mmo not supported? It has thousands of subscribers a lot of them who would love to play it in 3d. I have asked around a lot on the servers I play on and find this to be true. {Just as a heads up.}

Thanks in advance.

Here was my response

Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

I am Dileep; I will be assisting you regarding the query.

I understand that you wish to know if the new 3D Vision driver supports Lord of the Rings Online game.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused. To answer your questions.

a) NVIDIA is testing this game for stereo support. { <------ SWEET! But who knows how long it will take }
B) I request you to wait till the game is supported by 3D Vision driver. {<--- sigh LOTRO is the ONLY reason I bought it}
c) Currently we do not have any information about this, hence we would not be able to comment. { <--- they have no info on lotro or that people who play lotro would like 3d? Why did they assume conan, wow, and warhammer wanted 3d? We must start a petition for lotro to get 3d. If we get enough fans writting in they will build it :) }

Please feel free to contact us, if you have any questions.

I am greatful they took the time to answer me. So I'm thinking maybe let's start a thread on the lotro forums for a petition :) All programming is supply and demand. It is a business after all :) So if you have any friends online who have 3d vision or would seriously consider getting one, let's set it up :) I will start a thread when done posting here.

Very nice, thanks for taking the initiative and sharing their response with us. :) I'll send an inquiry, too (and maybe one to Turbine?).

Good to know they're "testing" it for LOTRO support at least. LOTRO being the only major mmo not supported must have something to do with licensing. I believe all the others (AoC, WoW, WAR, GW, etc) carry the "Way It's Meant to be Played" logo, while LOTRO doesn't. I'm sure those "partner products" got first priority.

Wow, just got it fixed! no more double mouse. All you have to do is go into the 3d settings, go to change the shortcut keys, enable the advanced ones and lower the convergence. No more double mouse but you still get the depth! Sweet!!!!!!

Also in DX9 no more weird bars on the side! Think that may have been a dx10 glitch.... I did have to remove post processing to get the 3d effects... but it works!!!!!

Grats :) I don't have the double mouse problem, 3dV works ok for me in lotro even with post-processing enabled (although my 285 does seem to have issues with DX9 in lotro which I don't think are related to 3dV). The depth is still way off, though, and it puts a real strain on my eyes to use it for too long. :"> I can play WoW in 3d for hours with no eye strain, but 15 minutes in lotro and I'm cross-eyed. >.<

Unfortunately, for now I'm sticking with 2d in lotro until nvidia and/or Turbine get the compatibility worked out. Just keeping my fingers crossed they work it out soon.
