Will G-Sync Monitors support 3D Vision in Portrait Mode?
Any Nvidia guys who can answer this? I've been told that 3D Vision doesn't work in portrait mode because of how the monitors draw the screen. I've been told it's fixed. So if you switch physical orientation of the screen, it obviously induces drawing issues regarding stereo 3D. But since one of the G-Sync traits that's been heavily touted is the ability for an endless number of ways to draw the screen, doesn't that mean portrait 3D could be supported? Are there any plans? If you're wondering why I'd care, because Pinball games would be awesome to play in 3D Vision portrait mode. As would vertical shooters like Ikaruga.

So far, everything we've heard would indicate 3d and g-sync can't be enabled at the same time. Doesn't directly answer your question, but it's not promising.

Yeah. I did consider that, it's just there was some talk about circuitry being different. So I was just wondering if it could some how be isolated. I get why G-sync can't be on with 3D Vision (you'd have to sync the glasses refresh rate and if you dipped to 35fps, it'd be flicker city). But I'm hopeful that's the main reason. It's a good reason. But if so, it doesn't preclude the ability to alter screen drawing to allow portrait 3D Vision. Probably too much to hope to get an answer, but I'm guessing this couldn't magically happen even if possible. Nvidia would have to engineer the software to allow it. So Nvidia, if you're reading this, it would be a very cool and appreciated driver feature if technically possible.

Okay. Guess I can cross off putting money aside for a new monitor. Silence has spoken. No need since it otherwise offers no upgrade to my current situation.

google translated from computerbase.de(german): Nvidia G-Sync and 3D Vision is not possible simultaneously In the comments to our notification to the current state of G-Sync , the question arose as to whether Nvidia's new 3D Vision technology works simultaneously with the 3D technology. It was also asked whether G-Sync is also supported in SLI mode. AnandTech asked at Nvidia after and has now received brief but clear answers. The variable frame rates do not allow this . " The variable at G-Sync refresh rate represents a technical hurdle that prevents the simultaneous operation of 3D Vision. The GPU developer points out, however, that providers 3D Vision can also offer at G-sync monitors. The 3D function is in this case, but only in other modes of representation as the G-Sync mode available.

Doesn't really answer the question though. I was in the "No G-Sync for 3D Vision" camp from day one. Syncing glasses to the refresh rate (that isn't constant and can dip very low) is a horrible idea. So I never expected it. I was just hoping that the "upgraded" circuitry would allow them to alter the direction the monitor drew pixels so portrait mode was possible. I don't really see why it's technically impossible, but it's probably niche enough that Nvidia just doesn't want to bother with supporting it.
