Hi all,
I m planning a new build with a i7-6700k for 3d vision gaming at 1080p ONLY, no 2k nor 4k, on a 24 or 27in 3d monitor (asus or benq). Which gfx card would give best performance for 3D vision gaming at 1080 res? The new 1080 ? 1070? Or even 1060? Or the old 980?
Since i don t plan on any res above 1080p and heard (superficially) that the gfx1080 are good for higher res, but not sure if it also is superior at 1k res.
In other words I don t want to waste money on some performance at a a resolution that i ll not use unless it performs at 1k as well.
Thanks

I'd say get a 980ti on the cheap. This one is $365 AR with no tax for example.

You probably want more than a 980 for 1080p 3D vision with steady 60fps. 1070 would be good if you can find one close to MSRP.
I specifically bought the GTX 1080 because now I have a 1440p monitor. But for a 1080p monitor, a GTX 1070 should be enough for most games. In The Witcher 3, my GPU is sometimes at its limits at 1080p, for example. But for older games, I can even use downsampling.
What games do you want to play?

I'd say a 1070>980ti
More future proof, more available memory, faster memory, twice the performance per watt, etc.....
GTX 1060 can not be SLI'd if you ever decide to.
I'd definitely go with Pascal over Maxwell in a new build, if buying new.
Thanks guys.
I play simulation games like DCS, IL2 stalingrad, rise of flight, assetto corsa, rpg like Witcher series, platforms like tomb raider, but no FPS. The planned new build also for VR (oculus or vive depending on which one have more of those games working)
Thanks guys.

If you are planning to do VR, I really think you should go ahead and pay the extra for 1080.
That's not really necessary for 3D, but the games you play are fairly demanding also, so it would not be a waste because of things like DCS, Witcher3, Assetto.
For VR, you can't use SLI at present at all, and I don't see that changing anytime in the next year, maybe two years. Too niche within a niche, and developers are hostile to SLI as it's extra work. It cannot be done by NVidia in the driver.
The reason I think VR kicks you into the 1080 camp is because of the need for super-sampling. There are some parameters you can tweak and the Oculus Debug Tool that allow you to super-sample the Rift or Vive, and it makes a really dramatic difference in visual quality.
Since the biggest knock on VR today is that the visual quality sucks, doing super-sampling is easily worthwhile, it's just that it's even more demanding. You need to be able to do 4K at 90 fps essentially.
It's would not be a great value buy, but I don't think it would be a waste. I'd wait a bit until the prices come back to earth though.

Thanks for the info and suggestion. VR was high on my priority list initially but after reading the thread about them on this forum it dropped.
VR for me must be in 3D, and so I m really unsure whether I will get the vr gear at the time of the build. I wonder how many games are in 3D on oculus rift right now and how is the 3d in an vr environment? Immersion must be increased with added vr i would imagine?
I won t build the pc for another few months hopefully the price on 1080 will settle by then.

I just picked up a Gigabyte 980Ti G1 Gaming for $660AU (sold my 970 for $300) and I'm happy with my choice. It was not only cheaper than 1070 (at least $750 here) but performs about 10-15% better. I'm not worried about power costs as an extra 100W doesn't really add up to anything significant.
I also decided not to consider Pascal features such as simultaneous multi-projection, etc. I just can't see it being relevant before it is time to upgrade again. I fell for the DX12 trap with Maxwell (went for a more expensive 970 over 780Ti) and don't want to pay for features I can't use anyway.
Of course whatever you choose you will be happy :D

Yours and ceejay have similar idea, my budget is limited and so a 980ti is definitely a contender if first gen vr gear is not something i want at this time.
Thanks cj for the link.
