Playin on a 3D TV
Hello everyone, please forgive me if this topic has been discussed before.

My friend has a 55" Samsung 8000 3D TV and he would like to use it for 3D gaming on his PC. His TV has an HDMI port that says (DVI) on it. Will this be enough for him to play his games in 3D at 60 fps in full HD? Or should he have a DVI port and use proper DVI cables?

Also, which do you guys think is better for 3D gaming, 3D monitors or 3D TVs? Thanks in advance.

First of all he can't do full HD gaming in 3D on that TV. None of the current 3D TVs support 1080p @60 hz. It doesn't matter which port or cable you use...

For 3D gaming, the best option is 3D projector IMO. Under 1000 dollars you can have a 80+ inch 720p setup with no ghosting. If thats not possible, its a toss up between the other 2. Screen size/PS3 support VS cheaper price/1080p support. Both options have slight ghosting...

DLP checkerboard will get you very close to the sharpness of full 1080p AND at 60hz! Well, except for the fact that nVidia seems to be removing support for checkerboard on DLP sets from it's 3D Play drivers.

Agreed, a front projector has size, great image quality, low price , but for me it's a non-starter because the loud fan noise that you don't get on other tech. Like the rest, it is limited to 1280x720 but that's Ok because 1280x720 is not downresed, so it is 1-to-1 pixel mapping. If a non-DLP or LED DLP FP ever comes out I'll be all over it.

As to computer monitors vs HDTVs, it's a no-brainer. Gaming on a teeny tiny monitor is like gaming on a postage stamp. When you get into 3D gaming, you quickly find that the immersion factor goes up with screen size. You can't go too big.

To the OP:
Your friend is lucky that he has a Samsung. It supports checkerboard mode unlike the Sony, Panasonic, Vizio, LG, Toshiba, sharp. Given that there will never be full res/framerate 3D gaming on a full sized display (HDTV), checkerboard is by far the best option. Just be aware of one thing:Checkerboard is, by default, disabled (grayed out)on the Samsung. To enable this hi quality mode, one must use the Samsung menu to enable it on the HDMI1/DVI input and use that input for the computer.
