Just want to bump this thread cause I want to buy a 3D vision set for my XPS1730. Which also has dual 8800M GTXs.

Do the new Nvidia drivers work, or do I still have to install modified drivers?

You don't need modded drivers anymore.
Just download the latest Notebook 3D-Vision-CD-Set.

Connect a 120Hz display to the M1730's Dual-DVI and you are ready to go.
