What I plan on doing with windows 10 release I will image my current drive which is windows 8.1 with all the updates. I purchase another SSD dump the windows 8.1 image to the new SSD drive and then upgrade to windows 10 . This way I can always roll back. I have done this in the past with Windows 7 to Windows 8 and it worked fine but as bo3b said below it may be one way. I will try the above on my laptop and post the results when Windows 10 is released.

It's not clear yet if Microsoft is going to allow you to roll back. They could easily burn your 8.1 license so that's no longer valid after the upgrade. If you want to keep your license, wait for other people to try this and see how it all works. I'm predicting that Microsoft makes this a way one way path with no recourse, as part of it being free.

If you have an expensive but movable retail key (no oem) you should be able to roll back. Not sure how that license can be forced to stick to the upgrade. I mean you can even move it to another computer if you uninstall it from the first. My Ultimate Win 7 has been on many systems as well as upgraded to Win 8 and later 8.1 Now it's back at 7 on my unstable machine (BSOD). 580 SLI

-You can do a clean install http://www.maximumpc.com/yes-you-can-clean-install-windows-10-after-upgrading-for-free/ -I really doubt they'll invalidate old licenses. That would be such a pain, and generate a huge number of support calls -OEM keys are easy to move. Just call up MS and tell them you had to replace some components. This won't work on prebuilt systems though.

It's really just an automated process where you type in like 40 numbers, and then the computer voice reads back another 40 numbers you type into Windows (maybe it's only 20 each way, but it's a lot). I wasn't aware you could ever rollback previous upgrades. I just assumed the old key became the new serial. And that was it. Of course, as has been stated, upgrades have never been free. So all bets are off. MS really wants everyone on 10. So really isn't wise to assume anything in this regards.

8 to 8.1 was free, and that required a change of the license key (which didn't invalidate my old one).

Sounds like they'll be no phone number to call if you change mobos with an OEM license. If you had a Win 7 OEM version, a mobo change will invalidate your free upgrade and you'll be forced to repurchase 10. They also seem to imply 7/8 licenses will be consumed by the process. Again, that's not surprising to me. MS really wants everyone on 10. So I don't think anything in the past should be assumed applicable again. Maybe it will, but I won't count on it.

My biggest disappointment is that Windows Media Center will no longer exist. That's a big deal only because my PC doubles as a home theater. PowerDVD integrates perfectly with WMC, and I can control movies with a remote control just like with any stand-alone Blu-ray system. That's a lot to give up for a new OS. I'm sure there will be some sort of app for that in the future, but in the meantime I'm not upgrading unless there is a huge benefit for doing so for gaming.

I basically don't trust Microsoft. They have always had an anti-consumer attitude, and like to boss around the customer, not necessarily do what we'd want. That may have changed with the new boss, but I'm going to wait and see what early adopters run into. There are encouraging statements there. They specifically state and link to an external site that you will be able to roll back to your prior OS. This suggests that you will be able to get back to 7 if you find some game breaking problems. Hopefully this works better than the rollback from Win8.1, but it looks pretty clear that they have no plans to invalidate your license key at upgrade. There is also a way to get a free Win10 install, without risking your current install. This is mostly for XP/Vista/Linus users, but it doesn't look restricted. Very interesting. I didn't realize they were going to give free upgrades that route too. I've had Windows preview installed (and linked to my MS account), but I doubt that's enough to get a free upgrade attached to it. I'm currently using the spare drive I had that installed on, but maybe it'll incentivize me to finally pull the trigger on an SSD. Then I'll just dump Preview 10 on my old install drive.

^^^ True that. I thought the same thing. Seems like a juvenile move to slap a bunch of names from a video game all over an OS that will be in 1/3 of the homes of the world's population. But whatever.

Am I the only the one that uses .VHD's? I have a 50GB Win 8.1 Install - Which I simply copy (While actually using the OS) as the one .VHD file that it is to another drive, the same drive, wherever I choose. This functions as a backup, OR I can use 'EasyBCD' and create a new entry. At this point in time, I have 8 different backup's/installs witch feature both Win 7 & Win 8.1, I'd really like to take a look at 10, for me the fact that it's been available as long as it has and I haven't used it by now, well it's next to craziness! The reason is simple, there is TOO much else going on right now, GTA V (With MOD's!) alone has turned me into half a hermit! But here is the rub, back to the VHD's - The reason why I have 8 separate backup's/installs (as opposed to 3 or 4) is because half of those are using different NV Drivers for, you gussed it, GTA V. If I am using 347.88 and want to check something, I simply restart and chose from one of the 8 os's that I have labeled by Win version & NV driver version's! Suits me fine, I have one traditional install of "Win 7 'MCE' x64" as my REFERENCE version, if you will, mostly because I don't want to have the bulk of 'MCE' on the VHD's, but also for the lack of AHCI when using VHD's. - The only drawback that I have come across, but other than not having it enabled there seems to be no measurable speed difference between enabled/disabled at all using various SSD benching tools. But yeah, I have no idea how some of you like 'BO3B, TsaebehT & PirateBrushGuy,' just to name a few, have enough time to tweak, post, code/decode, work, sleep spend time with the family. I picture Bo3b's bathroom having a fully 3D functional Gaming Rig setup next to the 'porcelain pee portal.' <----- For that, you can thank my 11 year old soon who has a slight addiction to all things 'Mario' and also to all of the various items and sounds the human body is capable of emitting. Anyway, I agree with the general consensus, try it all you would like as a secondary install, but don't put all your eggs in one basket. The way I see it, MS is really acting like the guy that sits in his car by the elementary school, you know the one, he's got a glove box full a candy and he's just waiting for the one that he knows he can manipulate. "We've been nickel and diming the general public for decades now, and that key better be legit or we will force you to have to call 'Rajeesh' and chant multiple number's, in groups of four or five, over and over until we feel satisfied that you are so confused, you would be willing to spend more money to simply feel the way you did before you called." Interesting approach, I've never heard of that before. Could you share some info about how you set that up/configure it?
