Skyrim I know it's doubtful but?

The latest fix 2.3 from SkyrimNexus doesn't require you to have a 3DVisionWater.esp or any other esp, since the fix is in the shaderoverride folder. If you don't use the dll, you are effectively switching the fix off. Check again if you have a shaderoverride folder where your game exe is located. Also make sure if you use FXAA,SMAA,or ENB to do the edit the Directx ini.

Yeah a few of us did some testing and it appears ENB series is not currently compatible with HeliX mod tools. I think the root of it is they are very similar overall, d3d9 shader injectors, but I think the problem is they enumerate/translate their shaders differently. HeliX mod reads shaders in truncated crc32 8char.txt format while ENB's shaders are pshXXXXX or vshXXXXX format. But yeah I think if given the choice for 3D, the obvious one is HeliX mod for 3D. You can still use FXAA/MLAA injectors without issue, from what I've tested.

If you did want to use ENB you could use his original 3D Stereo fix + Dorkirt's Sky Mesh + 3D Vision Water fix (Creation Kit) and still maintain decent results. You'd just lose HeliX's "perfect" water, 3D HUD, functional crosshair/map/quest markers etc.

Warpy from Nexus here... from the testing we did Chiz, I think it will be difficult to get the ENB fixed with INjFX since Boris doesnt have a 3d kit.

Hi All - I know performance issues have been discussed earlier in the thread, but I was hoping to get some current feedback on the performance I am getting, as well as ask the readers of this forum what other mods they are using (other than the fantastic 3d mods that have been discussed as of late). First of all my rig is a i5 2500k overclocked to 5.1, 8gb of RAM, and 1.5Gb MSI GTX 580.

I am currently running Skyrim in 3d at 1080p with the complete S.T.E.P modding guide applied (anyone else using this with 3d?). Skyrim looks absolutely stunning, but my frame rates are around 25-35 in most areas, dropping as low as 15-20 in slower areas like Whiterun. Does this seem right?

I feel like I know in my heart that I am just pushing Skyrim a little too hard with all the mods in S.T.E.P, but it just looks so damn pretty that I can't bring myself to disable or downscale any mods. The game is certainly playable, but the slowdowns every now and then are just enough to really hurt the experience as well.

Anyways, I'd love anyone's thoughts on my setup... and would love to hear what other mods people are using with 3d vision and how their performance is.

Thanks!

@JCMike
you should consider to uninstall HD textures pack and any others mods increasing textures rez. After several years playing with 3DVision, I think some parameters are useless with 3D: if it helps to increase immersion when playing in 2D, HD textures (for example) are not so noticeable when you switch on 3Dvision.

On the same way, AA is not so important in 3D, you can decrease it, or even simply disable it.

In one word, stereo 3D provides so much immersion that a lot of the STEP stuff seems useless to me, in particular "cosmetic" mods.

I completely agree. I remember comparing my usual 4x with the 16x Supersampling wassname and thinking, what's the point or difference?

I tried to go back to 2D to play Shogun 2 and boy, you really notice the jaggies! I had to max out the AA settings. I can see why AA is a biggie and ingrained in a gamer's psyche.

I remember discussing it here before. I think jaggies are less noticable for 3D gamers because we no longer use the edge of objects for working out where one object begins and another ends. We have depth separation for that. I think AA does make a difference (Trine2 with a little AA look so much better than without AA) but you need a lot less for it to be effective in 3D. I never feel I need more than the 4x - know what I mean?

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

@JCMike

As you can see everyone is going to have their own preferences when it comes to 3D Vision performance and after making the switch to 3D Vision there's certainly some features that are less important to me than they were when I was gaming in 2D.

But generally, my hierarchy of eye-candy and performance goes something like this now and gives you an idea of what I'm willing to sacrifice in terms of quality:

FPS (60FPS per eye)

Resolution (1080p)

texture quality

geometry

AF

Anti-Aliasing (generally only need 2x max now or FXAA)

particle effects
I generally try not to skimp on any of the above, but the following features become much less important imo in 3D and in many cases, can improve or fix problems in 3D by disabling them:

Shadows

some post-process effects

lens flare, HDR, Bloom etc.

Ambient Occlusion

Motion Blur

Noise filters, DoF
Some of these features are also absolute performance killers too, so turning them down or off can help you maintain 60FPS per eye. Having said all that, I think you're probably running into VRAM issues with that single GTX 580 running all those texture mods. The HRTP along with any custom textures is really going to push VRAM usage to the limits, especially if you're also running MSAA/TSAA. Deferred AA has become so VRAM expensive in recent games that it can easily push the limits of 1.5GB card budgets.

As others have stated, AA isn't as necessary in 3D because the stereo images composite in your brain to give a natural AA effect, very similar to 2x1 SSAA or SLI AA. It is still noticeable though, so I generally try to run 2xMSAA/TSAA + FXAA at the minimum, or 2xSGSSAA in games that I can afford the performance. You can try turning MSAA down for Skyrim, maybe 2xMSAA+2xTSAA+FXAA and see if that helps improve performance. I'm able to get 60FPS most everywhere with 2x480 SLI after 1.4 perf increases, with a single 480 its ~30-40FPS or so. If you're getting less than that with the 580 its most likely because your VRAM is pegged at 1.5GB and causing some paging/thrashing, you can check it with a program like MSI AfterBurner. You can also try closing out anything that uses VRAM prior to playing Skyrim, like web browsers, photo viewers, even Origin client.

I play skyrim using 1280x800 resolution + FXAA (all graphics options to max except AA off), and the result is very good. Increasing resolution to 1680x1050 (samsung 2233rz max resolution) impacts seriously in framerates, and the difference between both resolutions is not very noticeable when using FXAA.

I, on the other hand, see 35fps and think maybe you could tweak something up a little bit. Why worry about super-smooth framerates? This isn't a twitch game at all and the tweaks up REALLY make the game pretty!

I've got my game cranked pretty high up - so much so that it does actually break the game at times. I'll move to some other zone and the whole game will slow down badly. No problem. I just bring up the console, type qqq, and restart the game. It only takes a minute and the loading screen broke immersion anyway, so no big loss there. (Plus it reminds me about that whole real world thing. "Hmmm, I'm hungry, maybe I should do something about that..." /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />)

I do agree that AA isn't worth nearly as much in S3D. The jaggies appear in different places for each eye so 2X becomes plenty.

Guys - Thank you so much for your feedback... I really appreciate it.

After playing around with things a bit, it looks like Chiz was right and that the main culprit is my VRAM. With MSI Afterburner installed, it looks like I'm making out my 1.5Gb instantly when loading the game... I'm assuming due to the large number of texture mods. Interestingly, it looks like just Skyrim HD alone causes this... which is a little surprising to me that it needs so much.

Also, all of your advice on AA was a big help. I knew that AA wasn't as important, but I still had it set to 4x. Reducing it to 2x and enabling FXAA has given me 10-20 extra FPS, which is an awesome improvement considering I can't tell any difference in visual quality.

While I certainly agree with y'all about how texture mods are not as necessary using 3D vision (vanilla looks soooo much better in 3D than 2D), I think I have to also side with Zloth a bit in that the texture mods make this game absolutely stunning!! I played for an hour or so without the mods... and I just don't know if I can go back now that I have played with them enabled... so I may be looking for a 3Gb card now if I can sell mine for a decent price.

Anyways, thank you all very much for your input!
    JCMike

P.S. what utilities are you guys using to see framerate? I've been using FRAPS, which I'm guessing is showing the number of frames per eye... but I'm kind of dumb when it comes to this stuff.

My 480 has 1.5Gb and it's pretty much getting filled up. Even having a simple web browser up to a page with some pictures on it can push me over the edge and turn the game into a slideshow but, as long as I keep everything else off, I'm good.

FRAPS is good for framerates. If you pay for it, it also does a good job recording 3D video. Unfortunately, if you have the FPS display on when you use the NVIDIA drivers to take a screenshot, the FPS appears on the screenshot.

JC you could always try using the Skyim HD Textures Lite Edition instead of the full blown one. Still makes a big difference but not as resource hungry.
