Yes, that is a well know way for using community fixes on HMDs in Cinema Mode.
The original post that I recall for that was here I'm not sure if he is the one that figured it out. I know that TsaebehT was the first to figure out that Discover could be used for SbS, but he did not have a HMD/VR device.
What VorpX does is make games playable in a "Presence" type setting like VR.
Watch the video I linked earlier in this thread, VorpX bring VR integration to non VR games.
Unless I'm completely mistaken, but this has always been my impression.

I thought the original guide for SbS using Discover was by TsaebehT, it took me awhile to find the thread
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1003005/3d-vision/guide-how-to-change-3d-vision-discover-colors-or-enable-sbs-in-3dmigoto-via-discover-/post/5122837/#5122837
The obvious problem is that this still requires 3D Vision when the whole purpose of our new endeavours is to bypass 3DV and its limitations altogether.
I tried it with HL2 a while back - the performance wasn't great.
The point of having things work on an HMD is that not only is the 3DV driver dead, but so is 3DV hardware and any new 3DV related developments (granted there might be limited '3D' supported formats on future tech going forward).
10 years from now, will people be using old 3DV hardware? I don't think so. Without the availability of any other hardware, moving onto HMDs seems like the most logical step.
What we need is a solution which bypasses all need for the 3DVision driver, as well as bypass 3DVision hardware support.
What is problematic is:
-- future games running on
-- future drivers
-- on future graphics cards
-- on future windows updates/versions
-- after current 3DV hardware starts to break down / show its age.
Hence VorpX and emerging HMDs as the next logical option. One can purchase a new Rift for $350; much less used. Newer and higher resolution HMDs are already available or in the works, all supported by VorpX in theory.
Hence, the most important factor generally, is future 3DV-like (StereoScopic 3D) support, i.e. Geometry 3D.
I personally do not care too much for
-- Past games/fixes being supported or not - we can already play them all on our current hardware just fine.
-- Headtracking
-- Immersive screen - a virtual screen is fine for me if it makes things easier.
Possible solution:
In its simplest form, as Ralf suggested, he could enable a plugin into VorpX. The plugin could be Open Source and worked on by the talented people here, as well as Ralf. Future fixes would then use the plugin for future S3D support, completely separate from past 3DV fixes to this point.
Certainly, this might be a more 'do-able' proposition, but whether people here will want to move onto and work on HMDs is a separate issue.
I don't know how you chaps feel about my take on what is important (i.e. future game Geometry 3D support on even a virtual screen, as opposed to head tracking and past fixes support on a 'VR' immersive screen, which might be added as a bonus later)... I would imagine that it has most to do with personal preference vs. what is physically possible.

I realize that I'm probably considered a lurker on this forum... I don't shaderhack but benefit immensely from the results of those that do... I express my thanks, albeit not in a monetary way... the last game (literally) that I spent money on was Need For Speed Payback. Times are very tough for me economically right now, as I quit my job to become self-employed and struggling to get the business off the ground. I was able to afford a much-needed upgrade to a 1080 GTX last year using my x-mas bonus just before I quit my job.
A few months ago I was able to download Subnautica for free from the Epic Store. It has occupied my free time ever since and has become one of the greatest games I've ever played. I can't express enough appreciation for the person who made it possible to play in 3D. This morning, I loaded up the game in "Cyclops Vision" just to get a taste of the future, and it was just miserable... I don't know how I will do it on a permanent basis.
I say all of that to express my disappointment over the bickering that has gone back-and-forth in this thread, and how much I support the notion that civil debate has got to reign supreme, otherwise all of this magic that we have come to love will be lost.
I don't know what RAGEDemon has done in the past to trigger a defensive attitude here, but he seems to have been pretty civil so far, regardless of how you feel about his ideas. I do know this... he wants what is best for 3D Vision the same as any of us, and no harm comes from ideas.
This is my personal opinion on the above-quoted section of his last post:
VR has not appealed to me before now because of the historically poor image quality. I think that headsets are starting to get into the realm of acceptable tolerance in that regard.
IF the future of 3D gaming means buying a headset and Vorpx to do it, I will happily try every means to be able to afford it.
If we can play games with 3D Vision-similar effects, I would put on a VR helmet to do it, even if it is on a virtual screen and there is no head-tracking. Essentially the VR helmet takes the place of glasses and a monitor. I would be totally fine with that, if it's either that or "Cyclops Vision".

You're right, best to stay on topic.
I'm a bit allergic to more or less talented attempts to manipulate others with promises of a great future and similarly funny things some smarty-pants may use to manipulate others for their own advantage. Sometimes that invokes a certain itch for sarcasm in me. Clearly doesn't belong here, so sorry for that.
Regarding the matter at hand: I have shuffled my work schedule a bit to make room a for a few experiments. So in the not too distant future I'll probably have something more profound to say about the feasibility of the whole endeavour. The final decision will be based on both technical and economical considerations, So no promises whatsoever at this point.

I have great admiration for people working on supporting the right of humans to use both of their eyes.
Since, personally, I am powerless in the computer engineering/programming field, I'm extremely grateful to those who, using their talent and acquired knowledge, are offering their fantastic solutions.
I'm really sorry if my composition came as sarcasm. It genuinely wasn't my intention.
I just imagined it as a funny interpretation of the current state of despair in which the assassination of the 3D vision is taking us. I believe humor can alleviate wounds.
Thank you for all your efforts! They are truly appreciated. Respect.
