can i get a bit of buying advice for a 3d projector that will work with 3d vision?
1 / 3
Is it as simple as buying a 3d projector that is "3d ready" and supports 120hz frame sequential 3d?
Or do I need to look for some really old projector from years and years ago that was specifically marketed as being 3d vision compatible?

basically any projector which supports 3d via HDMI will work. You will need to buy 3d play license from NVidia though. Now in short to get best possible experience - buy FullHD DLP projector, and then use games fixed with 3dmigoto wrapper in TopAndBottom side by side 1080p mode. I personally use Benq 1070 which probably is now abit outdated so cheap :)

My goal is to avoid using 3d Play since that is limited to 720p. So if I get a fullHD DLP projector is that the only feature I need in a projector to use it with 3d Vision specifically?

OK, now it is impossible to have resolution on a projector above 720p with 3dvision. There is no such projector (unless we speek about 50k$+). All you can do is use 720p via 3dtv play (and believe me it looks good and is immersive), or if you are playing one of the newer dx11 games with 3dmigoto wrapper then use SBS mode (top and bottom) with 1080p resolution. That mode looks very well on projector - almost as good as native 1080p 3d.
speaking about projector type - you really want DLP for 3d gaminng, it is the only technology which is free from ghosting in 3d.

Geobox G303 + Omega filtters + nvidia pyramid + optoma hd36 x 2 pieces = 2400$ or with benq 1110s 1600$ = 3d vision @ 1080p with 60hz per eye
I recommend buy one cheap dlp and if you happy with it, buy second and the following setup and your good to go.
allthough i can agree with orthcviper even the 720p is pretty good. atleast compared to 2D,... haha that´s soooo booring after great 3d experiece. i hardly play anymore in 2D

You will need 3DMigoto and HelixMod fixes that you can find here: http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html
The main download for 3DMigoto is only useful if you're trying to fix a game yourself.
Unless something changed, DX12 is not supported in 3DVision. However, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex Mankind Divided have native 3D that works in DX12 and on 3D TV/Projectors (this does not use 3DVision).
You can try playing with the new SuperDepth 3D stuff with a 3D projector if there's not a fix for a game: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/959175/3d-vision/superdepth-3d/
The nvidia pyramid he is referring to is the nvidia 3DVision emitter, but I don't think you can usually buy it separate from a bundle with their 3D glasses.
On 3D glasses, check to see that what you're planning to get is compatible with the display device because there are a lot of types out there: RF, DLP Link, Passive, and Nvidia's.

Does a 720p native solution make sense?
I'm thinking 3DTVPlay at 720p60hz and a projector doing native 720p would require no scaling with the significant loss in quality due to scaling.
If doing 1080p 60hz SBS or TAB you limit the resolution in a non uniform way.
I think checkerboard is a slightly better compromise.
It's only supported in a limited number of games. The DX9 SBS dll is still a work in progress but with no demand I don't spend a lot of time coding for something I don't personally need.
But what do I know. I have no place to put a projector and find myself content with my monitor.
PS. Played a lot of Counter-Strike lately obviously in 2D.

Allthough keystoneS caused Smear is not that disturbing as with 3 chip projectors
Good with dual dlp setup is that if one brokes you still have another to play with active 3D as long as you get the repaired back

sounds a bit more complicated that I hoped. I'd be relying on tools from who made them pro bono in their spare and whose fixes might later become incompatible due to some update Windows 10 makes or something. I may just need to hope that some of these older 3d vision era games get an official virtual reality remaster or DLC...

People here offered solutions to your need/question.
If that is not good enough, move on;)
It was always the case...Something broke something;) Even if is "officially" supported.
And just because something is done by some random dude in his spare time doesn't mean is not as good as a corporate software (most of the times is even better mate - cause they aren't paid to do it, they do it out of passion).
Don't want to sound aggressive but your reply, I read as a lack of respect for this community and what people have done here and you just want to "consume" :)
Again, if you love 3D then yes, there are hoops and things to tweak and do. If you don't, better stick with 2D or VR or whatever else you fancy;)
Also, don't get your hopes up of older games working in VR ;) Never ever gonna happen (again, officially ^_^)...
My suggestion is go for it;) Learn new stuff and explore. At the end of the road you will get a pretty good satisfaction and enjoyment ^_^

I'm not trying to disrespect anyone but I can understand that interpretation. It is just that buying something like a projector for 3D use is, for my situation, a large amount of money. And it is not a decision I want to end up regretting. These 3D fixes were made years ago and most people have already enjoyed playing old games in 3D. Who would have the motivation to keep fixing old 3D games at this point? I am coming in pretty late to 3D vision and technology changes quick. I am actually surprised to see you replying to me because I read somewhere that you had given up making 3d fixes due to nvidia deliberately breaking your fixes.
My experience with unpaid programmers is based on my experience playing Garry's Mod. A lot of useful 3rd party tools have been made for the game, but then they later break as garry's mod undergoes continued development, then you wait a while and hope someone fixes it, then you search a database of add-ons where multiple versions of the same kind of add-on exist all made by different people and you are trying to figure out which one is simply the update to the tool you used before or which is the best one and really if these tools were just officially made by Garry himself then there'd be official support built-in for the tool and none of this would matter. So would you or anyone else in the 3d vision community cared if I tried playing resident evil 5 or just cause 2 or some other old game in 3d vision and I told you it didn't work due to some recent directx changes or modern GPU changes or something? I don't think so because you guys have had 3d vision for years and played all these games already. So if I'm going to pay for a 3d projector or something else for no reason but to game in 3D, I need a bit more certainty that the tools are going to work now and work in the future.
tl;dr version: I'm not trying to belittle the work of anyone who has made 3d vision fixes

Everything is Also a gamble and projector might cost twice or more if you get Bad luck and if you not prepared for that
Move on. 3D Gaming needs some sort of commitment to the cause and many many hours doing other stuff than Gaming.
Experience is more than i can say, and if you ready to TaKe a leap of faith proceed but if you feel like installing updating drivers and reading forums to get games running is boresome go with 2D.

From what I've seen, the majority of old fixes still work just fine. If there's a problem with the fix, usually the comments below the fix have a solution. You can also usually find help on this forum. Every fix has different instructions you have to follow and things you have to tweak, so it requires a good bit of work to get each one working.
On older games, they aren't being updated anymore like your Garry's Mod example, so fixes won't be broken by the developers. The DirectX version that a game uses won't change unless the developers change it, so no worries there. Nvidia has broken the 3D driver several times, but that generally affects a lot of games. Until Nvidia completely drops 3D Vision support, the GPU you use generally doesn't matter. There is often some issue when the newest card gets released, but so far Nvidia has gotten to fixing the issues. When a new version of Windows is released, there could also be issues, but Nvidia has fixed the issues in Windows 10 so far. The only other thing that breaks some 3D fixes is game overlays like the Steam one - you have to disable them sometimes.
So, the biggest things you would have to worry about is Nvidia releasing a new GPU that doesn't support 3D Vision in the future or a new version of Windows that Nvidia doesn't fix the 3D driver for.

tl;dr version: I'm not trying to belittle the work of anyone who has made 3d vision fixes
Move on. 3D Gaming needs some sort of commitment to the cause and many many hours doing other stuff than Gaming.
Experience is more than i can say, and if you ready to TaKe a leap of faith proceed but if you feel like installing updating drivers and reading forums to get games running is boresome go with 2D.
