right, I just had a 3 hour session with no crash- yo thanks MKULTRA my man, you a real homie, dog. Sorry the high level of immersion of 3D vision makes me get into my game character.
so I've had the 3D die out on me- but it always came back after a while. never took too long, maybe 2 minutes tops. never had to restart, never crashed. I've been turning it on and off when it dies, but I'm not sure it makes a difference. it comes back regardless. I have not had the shaders or anything mess up. the game starts flickering between 2d and 3d for a few seconds, the game goes 2d for a while, then the 3d kicks back in. I noticed it always happens while driving.
on another note: holy shit that is some prime 3D in this game. my poor old 770 rarely drops below 30fps with visuals on medium-high no msaa only fxaa, which I'm happy about, quite playable overall. the fxaa is great at close range but pretty bad for long distance though. I always skip a generation for my gpu upgrade but this game makes me wanna make an exception.

I daren't speak too soon, but for me the patch appears to be holding. I'm driving as fast and as recklessly as I possibly can, but the shadows still aren't breaking. There was one slight flicker an hour or so in, and I feared the worst but aside from that, nothing untoward has happened yet. This is with grass settings still on ultra, but I'll just keep on play testing and I'll see if anything changes, as I want to avoid jumping the gun on this one.
UPDATE: Had my first shadow break to 2D after some hard charging. Overall I'd say the patch has undoubtedly improved 3D integrity in my own experience, but it's obviously not perfect yet.

Toggle it off and back on every time you start the game to go from the worst Vsync ever to the best one of all the possible Vsync options, NVIDIA panel ones included.
This is at least the case on my side since day one.
Normal in-game Vsync makes the game unplayable until I switch it off and then back on after running the game, and then the game is almost everytime at 60 fps minimum in 2k resolution with maxed graphics except [i]grass[/i] on very high, [i]tesselation[/i] on high (very high is useless), no [i]high resolution shadows[/i], no [i]long shadows[/i] (useless) and the [i]extended distance scaling[/i] slider set to 0.
I also don't use any anti-aliasing (MSAA is too demanding in 2k and I don't like FXAA because of the blur).
Try this on your side, it's worth it!

Actually your suggestion's working pretty well so far, although my game of late appears to want to set a new time record before eventually bugging out again. Thanks for the tip though, I'll keep trying it.

For my benchmarks, the part I care about is MIN frame rates. Average is nice, and max is irrelevant. The game 'feel' comes from the MIN frame rates though. When you get in a fire-fight, or driving super fast, MIN is what makes the difference.
Now the GTA5 benchmark min is totally useless, it's some glitch from loading. This is a fairly amateur mistake for calculating min, but fortunately they provide us the Percentiles. Looking at those, I believe that the 99% level is a decent MIN. That number means that 99% of all frames are that milliseconds or better. 99.9% would be even better as GamerNexus uses, but I think 99% is good enough considering the run-to-run variance.
On that spreadsheet I'm using the 99% numbers for each entry. But =1000/99% number. That gives you FPS which is easier to grok.
If you look at my numbers in the spreadsheet, you'll note there is no legitimate difference between runs using those control panel settings. Also there is no difference between setting vsync on then off. I made multiple runs as you can see, because it's a wide variance benchmark.
Two more things- it makes no sense to set Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1. That will damage your performance in order to make smoother game play. In our 3D case it doesn't seem to change anything, but it's worth noting that causes a startup drawing glitch with SLI.
Also, the Multi-display/MixedGPU setting is irrelevant- that's for OpenGL. It cannot possibly affect GTA5.

The in-game normal one is the best of all when switched off and then back on, on my side at least. If not switched off and back on, it almost randomly cap the framerate between 60 and 30 fps every two seconds. I know how Vsync is supposed to work but here, in GTA V, it works really in a very inconsistent manner, making the game unplayable, to repeat myself again. Doing my trick, it always cap the fps to 60 with some very rare drops (with the other above settings) under without jumping, never, to 30 fps caping.
By the way, are you really sure that you understood the trick? Because when I read "Vsync on then off" I understand that your last setting is off, when it should be on. English isn't my mother tongue so I'm maybe wrong, but I think it should be "Vsync off then on", no?

I'm getting no increase in the frame rate myself, but strangely 3D isn't breaking nearly as often as it used to. From my viewpoint your fix appears to be having a placebo effect on my game's 3D performance. Perhaps the patch is responsible for stabilising the game just a little for me. Similar to Cheezeman's experience, I'm now exiting the game far more often with 3D still working, but I've no idea as to why that would be.

I did not connect your following statements with the settings there. Having to go offsite to find parameters from an image breaks the train of thought. I fully agree that a solution has to verifiable. If it's just the patch doing this, it may have improved things for me, but it hasn't actually fixed anything. Incorrect shadow rendering and crashes to the desktop still occur, it's just happens a little less often. That's my scientific analysis.

Forgot to mention that I appreciate your previous analysis regarding the performance of different drivers, albeit with pre 900 Series GPUs. so I've had the 3D die out on me- but it always came back after a while. never took too long, maybe 2 minutes tops. never had to restart, never crashed. I've been turning it on and off when it dies, but I'm not sure it makes a difference. it comes back regardless. I have not had the shaders or anything mess up. the game starts flickering between 2d and 3d for a few seconds, the game goes 2d for a while, then the 3d kicks back in. I noticed it always happens while driving.
on another note: holy shit that is some prime 3D in this game. my poor old 770 rarely drops below 30fps with visuals on medium-high no msaa only fxaa, which I'm happy about, quite playable overall. the fxaa is great at close range but pretty bad for long distance though. I always skip a generation for my gpu upgrade but this game makes me wanna make an exception.
I daren't speak too soon, but for me the patch appears to be holding. I'm driving as fast and as recklessly as I possibly can, but the shadows still aren't breaking. There was one slight flicker an hour or so in, and I feared the worst but aside from that, nothing untoward has happened yet. This is with grass settings still on ultra, but I'll just keep on play testing and I'll see if anything changes, as I want to avoid jumping the gun on this one.
UPDATE: Had my first shadow break to 2D after some hard charging. Overall I'd say the patch has undoubtedly improved 3D integrity in my own experience, but it's obviously not perfect yet.

That first run suckered me in, as the game has now just crashed to the desktop. Oh well.
1) Momentary flickering, still there.
2) Shadows rendering to 2D, still there.
3) Crashing to desktop whilst accessing nvwgf2umx.dll in Win 8, still there.

Toggle it off and back on every time you start the game to go from the worst Vsync ever to the best one of all the possible Vsync options, NVIDIA panel ones included.
This is at least the case on my side since day one.
Normal in-game Vsync makes the game unplayable until I switch it off and then back on after running the game, and then the game is almost everytime at 60 fps minimum in 2k resolution with maxed graphics except grass on very high, tesselation on high (very high is useless), no high resolution shadows, no long shadows (useless) and the extended distance scaling slider set to 0.
I also don't use any anti-aliasing (MSAA is too demanding in 2k and I don't like FXAA because of the blur).
Try this on your side, it's worth it!

Actually your suggestion's working pretty well so far, although my game of late appears to want to set a new time record before eventually bugging out again. Thanks for the tip though, I'll keep trying it.

Disabling/enabling vsync made a huge difference for me. Not only was the FPS higher/smoother but the game was also stable - for the first time, I stopped playing on my own accord instead of a crash making me quit.
Is there a way to disable grass completely? The 'lowest' option I have is 'normal'.

Except for the adaptative Vsync which is the worst Vsync option on my side (more tearing and less average fps than without... very useful...). Simply use the in-game normal Vsync like I explained before.
Juste to be totally clear: do not apply any Vsync in NVIDIA Control Panel.
With these settings, I get more than 10 more average fps than without (tested whitout Vsync just to see), and so less (almost none) drops under 60 fps with Vsync.

For my benchmarks, the part I care about is MIN frame rates. Average is nice, and max is irrelevant. The game 'feel' comes from the MIN frame rates though. When you get in a fire-fight, or driving super fast, MIN is what makes the difference.
Now the GTA5 benchmark min is totally useless, it's some glitch from loading. This is a fairly amateur mistake for calculating min, but fortunately they provide us the Percentiles. Looking at those, I believe that the 99% level is a decent MIN. That number means that 99% of all frames are that milliseconds or better. 99.9% would be even better as GamerNexus uses, but I think 99% is good enough considering the run-to-run variance.
On that spreadsheet I'm using the 99% numbers for each entry. But =1000/99% number. That gives you FPS which is easier to grok.
If you look at my numbers in the spreadsheet, you'll note there is no legitimate difference between runs using those control panel settings. Also there is no difference between setting vsync on then off. I made multiple runs as you can see, because it's a wide variance benchmark.
Two more things- it makes no sense to set Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1. That will damage your performance in order to make smoother game play. In our 3D case it doesn't seem to change anything, but it's worth noting that causes a startup drawing glitch with SLI.
Also, the Multi-display/MixedGPU setting is irrelevant- that's for OpenGL. It cannot possibly affect GTA5.
vsync off in game definitely improves average frame rates, and using adaptive is a great way to handle it.
Post patch did not change performance in 3D.
It is worth noting that in single-GPU they fixed the one-eye text problem using the default profile. No more need for AFR2 or MaxPayne3 for you single-GPU folks.

Yes, sorry, I forgot to mention that these settings work well in 2D and that I didn't test them in 3D because I forgot the idea to play in 3D for now. I just thought that if it helps in 2D, it could also in 3D.

And with these last settings I go from ~45 fps minimum in a few cases to ~55 fps minimum in very rare cases. That is a huge improvement.

I know that Multi-display/MixedGPU is for OpenGL but I didn't try to isolate settings one by one when I found these settings to see which ones where really usefull. I'm a bit tired with this. Same thing goes for Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1.
I would like to say that, comes a moment, no matter the theory, just practice. You're probably right and Multi-display/MixedGPU probably shouldn't affect the game in any way but "hey!", I just found these settings, tried them and the game was running in a so better way that I didn't ask myself anymore questions.
So, I just tried without Multi-display/MixedGPU and I confirm that it doesn't change anything. So you don't have to change anything in this setting folks, it's irrelevant.
About Maximum pre-rendered frames, I also tried with default settings and it's even better; I've got 2-3 more minimum fps. So thank you for the info and so folks note that it's better to no change this setting.
As for all the things with the percents, I didn't understand anything about what you are talking and I think I don't want to; looks like this is too much for me.
About the Vsync
No, adaptative Vsync is definitely something I don't want to use. To repeat myself, I got worse performances and more tearing than without. I know what I say because I tried, you know...
The in-game normal one is the best of all when switched off and then back on, on my side at least. If not switched off and back on, it almost randomly cap the framerate between 60 and 30 fps every two seconds. I know how Vsync is supposed to work but here, in GTA V, it works really in a very inconsistent manner, making the game unplayable, to repeat myself again. Doing my trick, it always cap the fps to 60 with some very rare drops (with the other above settings) under without jumping, never, to 30 fps caping.
By the way, are you really sure that you understood the trick? Because when I read "Vsync on then off" I understand that your last setting is off, when it should be on. English isn't my mother tongue so I'm maybe wrong, but I think it should be "Vsync off then on", no?
About the one-eye text problem with a single GPU
I tried a few times 3D with both a single GPU and SLI mode in the first days and it looks like nobody paid attention to my confirmation message:
So, it's a good thing that the problem as been officially fixed of course, but fixing the thing without using AF2 was already possible.
Finally, about CPU overclocking
I have to say that, opposite to what you and some others said, overclocking my CPU from 3,9 to 4,3 made a huge difference.

I'm getting no increase in the frame rate myself, but strangely 3D isn't breaking nearly as often as it used to. From my viewpoint your fix appears to be having a placebo effect on my game's 3D performance. Perhaps the patch is responsible for stabilising the game just a little for me. Similar to Cheezeman's experience, I'm now exiting the game far more often with 3D still working, but I've no idea as to why that would be.

The settings that you posted above from Reddit include setting vsync to Adaptive in the control panel. I followed all of the settings. I did not connect your following statements with the settings there. Having to go offsite to find parameters from an image breaks the train of thought. It would be better to either post the image in-line using Img tags, or just write your desired settings. Sorry I missed that, but for me it was confusing.
Please, let's keep this 3D specific. If you haven't tested 3D, then please don't post it. The game runs like a total champ in 2D, but that doesn't help us at all. There is no chance I'm playing this in 2D, and I just spent 2 hours collecting data that is worthless.
Earlier I tested, and found better results with vsync disabled. Might be related to your off then on technique. If it's a bug, then it could be triggered or fixed other ways.
The 99% is actually a lot easier than the other stuff. You just run the benchmark for the 4th phase, the one with the jet, then find the benchmark file in Benchmarks folder. The number at the 99% level is the MIN. It's in milliseconds, but FPS is just 1000/ms.
The reason to use 99% is for repeatable numbers. The average floats around too much, easily 10%+/-. But of course so does the 99%, it's just a smaller number.

I fully agree that a solution has to verifiable. If it's just the patch doing this, it may have improved things for me, but it hasn't actually fixed anything. Incorrect shadow rendering and crashes to the desktop still occur, it's just happens a little less often. That's my scientific analysis.
