Need help with Nvidia Dual Display Settings. ...disappearing system tray icon
Hi. Well, this is it. My first post. I joined a while ago and have been checking these forums for over 6 months. I hope to purchase the 3d Vision and a monitor or projector when the time is right for me to do so. In the meantime, scanning the forums in general, I didn't know where else to post this. So, knowing there was some relevance I thought I would try this community, as I don't really visit the others.
In short, the little icon in the lower right hand corner of my desktop keeps disappearing. This is the one that is the little Nvidia symbol and when you scroll over it, it says, "Nvidia Settings". It allows you to switch settings 'On the fly'. I can run with a single display, or clone my primary desktop, change resolutions, etc. You all probably know exactly what I am describing, so forgive the extra detail, but I have been posting for help on non-Nvidia forums and have needed to be specific. This icon is located in the system tray area of the task bar and is currently, 6 over, from my clock; right next to the Windows reminder "You have 12 days left for activation". I am using Windows XP Home.
Why might the icon be disappearing? And is there a way to get it back without constantly uninstalling and reinstalling the driver? I am currently using driver 196.21. Also, when it is operational, i don't see the option to set a primary display. I did have this before my old system perished. I did find the option to set a primary display in a larger menu (I don't remember where now and don't want to touch anything else till I hear from someone more knowledgeable), however, it was greyed out, and I didn't see any options to enable it.
If I go to Control Panel, and then Appearances and Themes and then Nvidia nView Desktop Manager, and select Turn on all the nView Desktop Manager Features, could that be causing the problem?
In case it is helpful, currently, I am using a Gateway FPD17175W 17" LCD monitor and my Sharp XR-32X-L monitor. Gosh i wish it was 120 hz. I am also running with an EVGA 8800GT 512.
Just fyi, I would categorize myself as perhaps an advanced beginner with computers. And maybe I know a little more about hardware than software, having built my own computer, etc.
Again, sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but it does seem it would be pertinent to the 3D community as I am sure (and have read) many are running with multiple displays.
