Hey, I'm luke and I'm a bit of a noobie and I need you're advice. /wave.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Ok so here is the dealio, I am currently waiting on some awesome parts for a new build I am doing and I am passing on my old (still very good) comp to my dad including the monitor. So I need a new monitor, and I was looking at this Nvidia 3D and I really want to check this out, So I considered buying one of these new 120Hz LD monitors but they only come in like 22 Inch and 24 Inch models and I really want to hit up like a 30 Inch monitor so I was thinking why not just get a 30 inch LCD or Plasma TV with enough Hz and good response times, aspect ratio etc etc. So I have a few questions to ask you guys and (possibly) lassies.
1. Is 3D gaming even worth it?
2. Does it have to be 120Hz, surely if I could find a TV with faster response times it might improve the experience or possibly hinder?
3. What should I look out for when choosing a TV/Monitor?
4. Do you know any decent TV's youself?
ALSO I have a spare 8800 Ultra that I was considering putting in the new rig for dedicated PhysX and was also wandering if it was worth the trouble and power.
I am thinking in my mind right now Mirror's Edge + PhysX + 3D + 30 Inch TV + GTX 295 = Ultimate Gaming Experience. /drool
Ok so thats it, if you can help in anyway it is much apreciated. THANKS /wave.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I'm not a 3D vision owner but I've played on it and I sometimes read this forum. First, I'd strongly suggest you stick to Nvidia's stated compatible list. Some people have had problems with 3D ready displays that were not on Nvidia's official list.
As to whether it's worth it? Some say yes, some say no. It is actually a quite old technology (as tech goes) but it is still very much an early adopter toy. That means that things may not be plug & play and you may have to struggle to get some games working even marginally. Older games are pretty much hit or miss as to whether they work and new games aren't much better. Unless it's designed for 3D there is no guarantee that you can get it to work.
When it works, it looks pretty good. If you've seen a 3D movie then you have some idea what to expect.
Oh, and that Ultra is overkill for Physx but it will work just fine. If you have the card just lying around then I don't see what the trouble is. It is easy to install unless it is water cooled. Just make sure that you have a PSU that can support all of your hardware.

Hi
Here are hopefully some answers:
1. Yes worth it (allways adjust the 3D to Your liking).
2. Yes 120Hz for displays for shutterglasses is the best. Then You can't see flicker. The only displays that can do that AND have full HD are the upcomming 24" Acer monitor: http://www.tcmagazine.com/comments.php?id=31435&catid=2.
All the 100Hz TV are not really 100Hz like my (50" 100Hz 0.001ms) Plasma TV Samsung PS50B450. It is on this list: http://www.3dmovielist.com/3dhdtvs.html and the big HD TV's as of this moment use checkerboard 3D which makes the 3D grainy. Works ok for plus 2m distance but not so good as a pc monitor.
3. You want 120Hz full HD 3D (non checkerboard) like in the Acer 24" but these big TV's are only to hit the market in 2010 (and will maybe be expensive?). And very little ghosting or You will be anoyed.
4. People seems very happy with the big DLP TV's (on the list http://www.3dmovielist.com/3dhdtvs.html) since there is no ghosting but they are not available in Europe (last I checked) and use checkerboard 3D (not good for close watching).
The thing that You want: 30" 3D monitor with full HD and 120Hz is not available (yet). I think a lot of us would buy it also when it comes out (can't be too long with all the 3D stuff that's happening now).

1- There is NOTHING you can do to your gaming that is going to radically change the experience like 3D does...so yes it is worth it.
2- Yes TRUE 120 is the key. Lot's of so called 120Hz or higher TVs are not really telling the whole truth. Stick to the Nvidia list for extra safety.
3- Again, go with the Nvidia list to play it safe.
4- It seems the Mitsubishis are doing great. I have the 60" one and the experience is on a different level compared to my Samsung 22" 3d ready LCD. No ghosting at all and you can really increase those pop out effects to extreme levels!
As for physx, no the ultra IS NOT overkill. The be accurate, the GTS250 (9800gtx+) is the best bang for the buck for physx.
Take a look at the following test:

Ok thanks for the awesome replys, you have taught me alot. So I guess i'm just going to see what the 2010 will bring, until I upgrade. I would consider those Mitsubishis for sure if I could find them in Aus and if they had smaller versions. Also that link to the PhysX round up is very handy, but I don't think i'm going to be getting a 250 any time soon, well not atleast until Physx gets adopted in more games. Thanks

Your card is pretty much equivalent to a GTS250. As mentioned the GTS250 is a 9800GTX+. The 9800GTX+ is only marginally faster than an 8800GTX, as is the ultra. So it looks like you would be in the sweet spot.

WAIT is the answer. 2010 is the year for 3D. Hopefully CES in 2 weeks time will give some answers on release dates. But please have patience. This time next year we will all be laughing at the present 3D monitors / tv's that are available. If you really can't wait then get the new Acer Projector.

OH I can wait I don't want to rush into it, in it's early stages and be disapointed later on.
Also Xeromist that is awesome to know that my 8800 Ultra is almost on par with a GTX 250 thanks for informing me. : )
