I think its a gimmick, at least in the movie and television industry. They are forcing 3D into movies that shouldn't even have it in the first place, just so they can collect extra revenue.
Television companies are trying to sell 3DTV for double/triple the price for a module that probably only cost them a tenth of the TV's worth to add in.
On top of all that, every competitor is providing their 3D solution as the "standard" solution. The winners in this will continue on, while the rest of the crowd will probably become vaporware.
Either way, 3D will eventually become a standard whether we like it or not because everyone in the industry is forcing it down our throats. Probably then, I will start looking acquiring 3D for myself. Till then, I won't be a tester for these companies.

Virtually identical TV's but one have 3D capabilities, there is easily a $900 difference in price.
Again near identical specs, 6series were 120s Motionflow, while 7 series were 240Hz, but the price difference is huge.
Mind you, I'm picking near-top and top non3D LEDTV models and entry 3DTV models for these comparison from refutable brand name companies.
I'm very sure the picture quality couldn't have improved that much to justify the price.
Yes, double/triple was a bit exaggerated, but the huge price jump is mainly due to 3D.
Like dont think I hate 3D, I like it very much and will get it in the future, but right now, every company is throwing it out there to justify the price hike, as if it is a gimmick. Filmmakers are making 3D or adding 3D to 2D movies to get people to pay the extra buck for 3D.

And this proves what?
You are using an example of a director, who heavily favors 3D and actually knows how used 3D properly to make an amazing movie.
Now where are the other 99%of directors who arent just making movie that having flying debris or sticks pointing out of the screen at you.
I'm sorry, having seen enough of 3D in movies, they make it so freaking predictable as to when they are gonna use their 3D effects.

Here is an example Sony 46NX800 vs 46NX810:
