I think my Acer GD245HQ is great for 3D and 2D games, from what I've read, there's very little difference in the actual panel as opposed to the Alienware, the differences lie in the price, and USB ports.
However it does suck major donkeys nutz when it come to 2D desktop use.. Browsing that sort of thing, that's why I dual monitor with my trusty old Samy 245b [never be without 1].

There is some internal setting that makes the 2d mode a hell of a lot better. You have to be in some sort of dev mode or another to get to it. Zero was telling me about it as he has the same monitor. Perhaps someone has more info?

I'll take a stab at this one even though I only have ever used the AW2310, I've read a lot of reviews and user reviews, including some from people who have used both. Again, these are just quick bullet point observations where one is generally stronger or weaker compared to the other. Please keep in mind, all of these are TN so they're all going to be better/worst with respect to IPS/*VA in certain areas. They all also have very limited inputs compared to traditional high-end panels. I didn't include differences like backlight bleed because I think this varies too much panel to panel, black levels are what they are for TN (not very good). Listed in no particular order:
1) AW2310

Good: Best 2D/desktop, bezel/aesthetics, OSD, configuration options/settings, stand, brightness, best warranty/dead pixel policy.

Bad: Price, its the most expensive of the lot, availability is harder to find outside of US/CAN

Neutral: 3D performance is good, supposedly more ghosting than Acer but more controls to compensate contrast and overall brighter.
2) Acer GD235Hz/GD245HQ

Good: Best response times, 3D performance slightly better with less ghosting, slightly larger than the other panels at 23.6"

Bad: Ugly? Somewhat subjective but most don't like the bezel or stand. Limited stand adjustments. Few setting/config options. 2D is bad without turning off Overdrive in service menu.

Neutral: Price, its cheaper than the AW by a good bit. Can gain additional control through the service menu.
3) Asus VG236H + 3D Glasses

Good: Best price! $500 includes 3D Glasses. Better than average 2D and 3D, not great in anything but no flaws either.

Bad: None

Neutral: Glossy (good/bad depending on person), fewer config options compared to AW. Its an all around solid package.
4) LG 2363D - not avail in the US so I haven't seen much written on this, but 3D Vision Blog has a review of it that seemed to think it was better than the Acer overall, but also more expensive. Pretty sure this is also the only LED backlit option for 1080p 120Hz atm too. Can check out the full review here: http://3dvision-blog.com/review-of-the-23-...gaming-monitor/
Of those buying options today, I would probably go for the Asus because of its price and overall good marks. I've seen maybe 6-7 user feedback from people buying the full Asus kit and all have been very positive except one guy had some pixels go bad. That's similar to the AW, but most still mention the price as a negative. Acer is generally mixed bag from users, they love the 3D but a lot complain about the 2D and looks of it. Hope that helps!

Yeah I think disabling Overdrive in the service menu improves the 2D on the Acer, here's the detail on it: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1009658

I am seriously considering waiting a few months for the asus 27". With the Asus 23" getting such good reviews, I am hoping the 27" will do the same just larger. I have a fear currently having a 24" that the 23" wont engross me adequately.
Also, is the 1920x1080 limitation of the 27" going to hurt it for 2d gaming and as a general purpose monitor? Is there any reason why NOT to wait for it?

Because it might never see the light of day. It's been completely absent at the latest trade shows and was supposed to have already been released. If we still aren't hearing any news about it now, chances are it's not coming out any time soon.

They are all relatively close in price, however I do realize that is a factor, just a minimal one for me.
Which is the supreme choice? Yes I'd like to enjoy it for 2d also, but I really am buying a 3d monitor for 3d gaming.
Opinions based on facts? Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I guess opinions based on experience... ;)
