Sleeping Dogs - Strange artifacts/issues using 3D Vision
It's great to have Nvidia forums back. I guess we all have missed this forum, since it's the best one for 3D Vision users, as 99% of all other PC game forums out there can care less about 3D Vision.
I have even felt that while Nvidia forums have been gone, even a Google search for 3D Vision's game issues was hard to find anything, since most searchs would lead to the no more available Nvidia forums. It's great that the Nvidia forums are back, that's all I can say!!!!!!
I've been playing Sleeping Dogs for a while and I'm loving this game, it actually works pretty good with 3D Vision despite being a game made for AMD/3D.
I always felt the 3D depth in this game was locked, but I manage to change the 3D depth by changing some depth values in displaysettings.xml and now the 3D looks way better. Convergence by default is ok for me.
Is there any way to use the 3D Vision's receiver wheel to adjust depth or any advanced keyboard shortcust to control depth or convergence in this game? All of them don't work at all, I can only change 3D using the in game's 3D options slider menu. Anyway, I already found my 3D setting sweet spot that best suits me.
The strange 3D issues that I see in this game happens almost in every indoor scene of the huge map (sandbox). I am walking inside a building for example and sometimes I turn right and I see strange artifacts in 3D, usually a black box, not totally black, kind of transparent, but I can see the anommalie and it's really annoying, kind of ruins the 3D experience, and it always happens with the right lens of my 3D glasses, it never happens with the left lens, it's always the right one. It's very strange, and if I turn the mouse again to other direction the issue is instantly corrected and everything is normal again, but once I turn to the same direction I was, the anomalies and weired artifacts take place again. Hopefully, most of the action in game the 3D is Ok, but everytime I play this game I usually see this issue in indoor scenes.
Is this an issue with 3D Vision in this game, is there a way to correct this, can anyone that is playing Sleeping Dogs help me out with this issue?
I'm still using update 1.5 for this game, I know there's update 1.7 already available, but it doesn't say anything about fixing a 3D issue such as the one I've just described.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for my english...

I can't view this 3D image right now since I'm on my Macbook Air. When I get home I'll take a look at this picture.
But I've never had any similar issue with any other 3D game that I've played, only Sleeping Dogs.
I'm not sure the game you''re showing me will replicate the same issue, since these 2 games are totally different and use different engines.
Have you ever played Sleeping Dogs with 3D Vision?
Is there any Helix fix coming out for Sleeping Dogs? The game works really good in 3D, but there are these anommalies in some indoor scenes as I've mentioned, and the crosshair is only rendered in 2D unfortunatelly.
The anommalies I see in this game in 3D is like a black semi-transparent square, about 60% of the size of my display screen, always in the left upper side of my display screen, but if I close one of my eyes, I can see that this issue only appears in the right lens of my 3D glasses. The left lens are OK, no black box.
It's really strange as this issue only happens in a few scenes of the game, usually indoor scenes.
When I am driving or walking in the city, the 3D is just perfect, there's nothing wrong, besides a few ghosting issues, which is normal for any 3D Vision game.
Some scenes where I could see this annoying issue was in a Mission, inside the Hospital where I had to enter the doctor's office to steal some information from a safe. Other indoor scene that shows this issue everytime in Sleeping Dogs is when I have to pay a visit to the undercover police office inside a basement, where Wei has to talk to some chinese cop girl about cases. I can walk around the office and I can see these 3D glitches (black box in the left side of my display), but I can make it disappear if I turn the mouse to other direction, but once I'm back to the same direction I was, the issue is back. It's like marked parts of the game that have these glitches always, the anommalies are always in same places. It's really strange. Like I said no other 3D game that I've played have shown the same issue, and I've played more than 20 3D games so far.

I guess no one is playing Sleeping Dogs in 3D, since I get no replys.
It's a great game in 3D and should be perfect all the way, but I am having these issues as I mentioned above.
I've just finished the game and the flickering issue also happens in the open world scenes, like when driving a car around the city of Hong Kong. I realize thta the issue happens with my monitor, not just the glasses. If I close my left eye, I can see the black transparent square in the upper left corner of my screen, but If I close my right eye, everything is perfect. But If I take my 3D glasses out and look at my monitor I can see the issue also, the screen keeps blinking like a white shadow in the upper left corner of the monitor, really strange and that's why it affects my 3D gaming. It's strange that it happens in some parts of the huge sandbox world, and when the screen starts blinking, I can move my mouse around and change position and the issue is gone, once I return to the same direction I was, the issue is back. It happens more rarely in open world scenes and mainly inside indoor scenes of this game.
I don't play Sleeping Dogs in 2D, but I realize that If I turn off 3D mode by hiiting the 3D Vision emitter button, the issue is still there, so it's not really a 3D issue, but a game issue I think.
This game is different from other 3D Vision games as it was designed and advertised for AMD 3D technology, not Nvidia's 3D Vision, but it also supports 3D Vision, but it's the 1st 3D game that I play that you can't use the Nvidia emitter to control depth or any other advanced keyboard shortcuts, just the in game's options menu slider to control depth and convergence. I haven't tried disabling 3D mode using the game's option menu to see if the flickering issue goes away, but I have a feeling it's flaw with the game, not really a 3D issue. I will try playing the game in 2D mode, disabling the game's option for 3D, and see if the flickering blinking issue replicates.
Has anyone who's playing Sleeping Dogs in 3D also noticing these anommalies which are very very annoying and can ruin the 3D experience in this great game?
I've never had a similar issue with any other 3D game that I've played and I was playing Max Payne 3 in 3D a few weeks ago and all golden.
I don't think Nvidia folks will help me out as they must see Sleeping Dogs as a competitor game since it's sponsored for AMD 3D. Great game I must say, but if Nvidia had worked with SP devs, I'm sure 3D Vision support would be much much better. AMD 3D is still light years away from 3D Vision.

Hello mate
I have the game but I can't say I have noticed the problem.
But when you are driving around the depth changes becoming virtually 2D with depth. 3D is great when walking but borks when driving!
Don't believe me? Take a screenshot. Convert to jpg and superimpose the two views to converge on the motor bike or car. You will see the scene is practically 2D Look at the MTBS3D site http://www.mtbs3d.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13181:sleeping-dogs&catid=38:game-reviews&Itemid=76#comment15_83824
I know it doesn't help your flickering but it might explain why it happens only when you are driving - because the 3D changes...

@francomg......try using the Checkerboard mode with this game, for me at least it's the only way to go in to 3D mode (3DTV Play FP mode dont work with this game in 3D).
In CB mode i dont have this artifacts/issues you wrote about it. BUT, like andysonofbob says it's like more 2D+Depth than real 3D...

Andysonofbob,
I didn't say that this issue only happens when I'm driving a car. It happens most of the time when I am walking inside buildings and indoor parts of the game. I said it also happens while I am driving a car around the city. I think you misunderstood me.
I get great depth and awesome 3D with this game. By default the max 3D depth of this game is set to 10, which is kind flat to me, but it's easy to correct that and add more custom depth, you just need to go to game's directory and find a file called displaysettings.xml, now open it with notes pad and just change the depth value from 10 to whatever number you want. In my case I've changed 10 to 15, and now 3D depth looks way better, like compared to 60% depth in a normal 3D Vision game, which I'm used to. I'm not sure you guys were aware of that, were you?
You won't call this game 2D Depth, after doing I'm telling you to. 3D will be much much better now!!! Trust me....
If you do this, when you go to Sleeping Dogs option menu, the depth settings slider will go to 15, or whatever value you've set. You can also do the same with convergence settings...
I play Sleeping Dogs with 15 depth and 6 convergence, and 3D is awesome, but it could be perfect if I wasn't dealimg with these flickering issues that makes my display keep blinking with white shadows in the upper left corner of my displays, which is really annoying.
DHR,
I would never use Checkerboard, since 3D Vision's frame sequential mode 1080p120hz has much greater 3D quality and sharper image. CB I only use for my 3DTV, since it can't benefit from FS 1080p120hz, but my monitor can. I like to get the best image quality out of a game, and that's 3D Vision all the way. I hate Tridef..... If I was using my 3DTV, then I would try out CB mode for sure, but not with my 27" 3D display.
Do you also see these strange artifacts when playing Sleeping Dogs in 1080p120hz using your 3D Vision Ready monitor?

I felt the same. I was really defensive about the 3D. But seriously, no matter what settings you put in the XML file, when you are in a vehicle the 3D camera does something and become virtually 2D with depth!
Try it.
Take an nVidia screenshot Alt + F1. Convert it to a jpg by replacing jps with jpg. Open it up your graphics editor. Put one of the views on top of the other, making one of them slightly transparent and using the car as the centre point.
You will see the scene has little vergence, whilst the HUD is clearly off set. I didn't believe the dudes at MTBS3D until I tried it and saw for myself!
But who really cares?

I understand that the 3D depth isn't as good as other 3D Vision games, but if you change the deoth values in displaysettings.xml, it can improve the 3D experience a lot, but I agree that while driving a car it looks flat sometimes, but it's not reallt that bad I think. This game looks great in 3D.
AMD 3D is not as good as 3D vision and this game wasn't made for 3D Vision, maybe that's why the 3D is a little bit different from what we're used to.
I have patch 1.5 installed, but I heard that 1.6 and 1.7 is just for DLC, no big changes at all, or correction of any issues related to the problem I am describing here.

I keep the HUD always, I don't even know how to disable it, but like you said, why would I do that since playing SP without the HUD is impossible, you will get lost and don't know what to do????

What settings do you use Francomg?
Here's mine:
Option3DDepth 10 Option3DDepth
Option3DConvergence 25 Option3DConvergence

I had to edit out the tags because the text didn't display properly!

On foot the 3D is awesome. Which is fab for the fighting etc. :)
The part of the HUD that drives me bonkers is the Distance to Target icon. It is at screen depth or worse, pops out!
You can disable the HUD from the menu but it removes everything. Because the target icon thingy does my head in so much I have a macro set up to toggle the HUD off and on.
With it off you can still see the 3D GPS arrows on the road. But as Francomg says, you really need at least the minimap for your objectives.

I set convergence to 6 and Depth to 15. By default the max depth is set to 10, but I've changed the max depth to 15 by altering the displaysettings.xml file.
This is how I play the game.
I also dislike that the crosshair is not displayed in 3D, only in 2D, but most of the time this game is all about fighting, which is the fun part and the action I like more in this game.
The few scenes that I have to use a gun in this game, I get along well with the 2D crosshair. It's not like Crysis, COD, MP3 or other shooters where is mandatory to have a 3D crosshair, to have good 3D gaming experience.
I set convergence to 6 and Depth to 15. By default the max depth is set to 10, but I've changed the max depth to 15 by altering the displaysettings.xml file.
This is how I play the game.

You can disable the HUD from the menu but it removes everything. Because the target icon thingy does my head in so much I have a macro set up to toggle the HUD off and on.

Hi,
Yep Target icon is just horrible, could you give me your macro set up to toggle the HUD on & off, because it's such boring to go in option to activate and desacivate it...

AMD 3D is not as good as 3D vision and this game wasn't made for 3D Vision, maybe that's why the 3D is a little bit different from what we're used to.
I have patch 1.5 installed, but I heard that 1.6 and 1.7 is just for DLC, no big changes at all, or correction of any issues related to the problem I am describing here.
