Strange Artifacts - Driver or Overclock? Doom Artifacts - See attachment
Hi Everone,

As a follow-up to my previous thread, it turns out even in native speed, I still get strange blocky artifacts in Doom 3 Demo (3D mode). Not nearly as many as an overclock, but they are still definately there.

Has anyone else had this experience?

I do not get artifacts in any other games including BF2, Fear, COD 2, and everything else I've tried.

When in 2D, everything is perfect no matter what the overclock status.

Any ideas?

I have attached a picture of what I get. Rename it from *.ZIP to *.JPS and it will work.

To get this picture, I was in overclock for maybe 30 seconds.

This, like other artifacts, happen when I step on a specific spot EVERY time.

I get something similar at native speed, but the artifacts are harder to localize.

not sure, try lower ur clocks below standard (stock) clocks and see if it works.

I just tried what you suggested - no luck.

I reduced my GPU to 400Mhz (from 425 native) and memory to 900Mhz (from 1Ghz native).

I also tried to turn off write combining.

Do you know of a way I can test my video ram and gpu?

Any other ideas?

I think I've gathered enough information for a theory.

I've been reading online, and I have learned that Doom 3 uses special NVIDIA hardware features that the majority of other games don't, and according to its architect, is very prone to overclocking problems because of this.

That explains why I'm only having problems in this game, and no other.

The EVGA 6800 Ultra Extreme, a factory overclocked card, had stability problems from the get-go in Doom 3 in its the Anandtech review.

So, clearly this is an overclocking issue. However, why is my card getting very occasional artifacts (rare, but they happen) during stock speed gameplay?

EVGA's solution to the 6800 UE problem was a bios update to make the 2D and 3D GPU speeds identical.

I've been running RIVATUNER on my computer which has two clock speeds depending on what mode the screen is in. I'm guessing that when my clock speeds change, the instability kicks in.

I'm going to try the following:

1. Make clock speeds consistant for all modes.
2. Try overclock and stock clocked modes.

I think the stereo driver makes Doom a lot more sensitive than it normally would be - so we'll see if these changes have any effect.

It's probably a long shot /angel.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='O:)' />

A long shot it was - I'm such a noob.

I think I'm going to have to RMA this card.

Doom runs best without an overclock, but I definately get occasional flickers and checkerboard patterns - I don't know what else to do.

Any final thoughts?
