Guys, today I have a new question regarding the same subject. The 1080GTX I was eyeing has sold out. It was a good deal and I was afraid it would happen before I had the funds to buy it. And having the funds might still be a while. In the short-term, I am wondering about the possibility of overclocking my existing 690, which I've never done. Using MSI Afterburner, does anyone have any do's or don'ts advice? And what would I be gaining? My specific problem is that I want to play Arkham Knight, Need for Speed 2015, and also the new Need for Speed Payback. There is only one particular issue I'm having in Arkham Knight which makes it unplayable: When doing chase missions in the Batmobile, I experience hitches and glitches in the FPS and eventually as the chase progresses the game crashes. In Need for Speed the issues that make it unplayable are: When smoke or mist appears on the screen, the FPS turns into a slideshow. When cops start chasing, whether on screen or not, the lights from the patrol cars turns the game into a slideshow. ... OC might get you ~10% performance max. That's 33FPS if you were already getting 30. It's good to do regardless, to get the most out of your money and system. There is no way to damage modern GPU's because they automatically throttle at any dangerous temperature (this ought to include 6xxx gen too). Regardless, you can't overvolt it to any dangerous levels using Afterburner. You also can't kill memory because you can't over-volt it using Afterburner, and it never really gets hot. ^^^ Okay thanks for that. Yeah, I feel like OC-ing isn't going to work, but like you said, doesn't hurt to try. I can even deal with momentary slideshows since it doesn't happen often. As long as I can continue to play the game without it crashing... but we'll see.

Actually for a GTX 690, I would [i]underclock[/i] that card. When I was playing Deus Ex:Mankind Divided, there was a section that I would always crash. correct me if i am wrong but I heard that you can turn your old GPUD into a dedicated PhysX? is this true?

and does this mean that every SLI system requires a dedicated PhysX card to maximize the SLI performance?

1080SLi + 970 for PhysX would make a beautiful combo. However, I faced a similar dilemma and chose to sell both my 970s. My reasoning was that there are no great PhysX games on the horizon, and current games play well enough with 1080SLi doing PsysX without a dedicated card. If there were going to be a decent amount of PhysX games, I would have definitely kept the 970! In the end, it depends wholly on what you play. Buy the 1080 SLi and see if the performance on the games you play is acceptable without the 970 doing the PhysX, and then sell the 970 if you're happy.

I think is is worth to keep and extra GPU in your PC only if you regularly play a game that uses Physx and I don't know of any newer games that use it. It will only consume power and produce extra heat in your case. Another thing to consider is that Physx didn't "evolve" so I assume that the performance impact on current gen GPU is much much lower.
