Strange issue with 3D Profile Manager, please help confirm
  1 / 2
Okay, I never had this issue before, might have to do with the latest driver. Can someone please try the steps below to confirm? I've duplicated it for myself multiple times. It seems to have to do with Profiles and it may wind up affecting a lot more than just Heaven benchmark, which is the program that led me to discover the issue. Okay. Do a DDU and installation of 361.91. Set up all your settings for 3D like you normally would. You can do SLI, I did. Try running Heaven Benchmark with the Stereo 3D option to "3D Vision". Everything should be working okay. Now, go through the steps to edit profiles using 3D Profile Manager, except, you don't even need to actually change anything. The steps can be found here: http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt.html So, basically: 1. delete the nvdrssel.bin file 2. export profiles using 3D Profile Manager 3. delete the nvdrssel.bin file 4. import the profile file you just exported. You don't even need to change anything. Now, when you try to run Heaven in 3D Vision mode, it will fail. Black screen. You can escape out. You'll hear a notification sound, and if you hit Escape very quickly you can see that some sort of text box flashes off the screen very quickly, looks like a long error message but it's impossible to read. Now here's the really odd thing... I then set the "Stereo 3D" option in Heaven from "3D Vision" to "disabled", started it up, and it worked in 3D Vision! At least for a little while, anyway, I did get a driver crash soon thereafter. Can someone take a few minutes and see if they can duplicate this issue? For the time being, at least for me, it means if I want to edit profiles to use Helixmod fixes, I know it will break at least some things.

As additional info, I tried exporting profiles after I did all of the steps above, to a different file name, then compared the two using the FC command at a command prompt. There's a ton of differences. Is this normal behavior, considering I just did export and immediate re-import? That's troubling to me. I'd think 3D Profile Manager needs to be fixed/updated. EDIT: I chopped out the entries for "Unigine: Heaven 4.0 demo" and "Unigine: Heaven demo" from both profile exports and compared them. No visible differences. So whatever's changing, it doesn't seem to be specific to the Heaven profiles themselves, but something more global. Which is even more worrisome. EDIT2: One interesting change is, if you export right after installing the driver, here's what comes before the first profile: BaseProfile "Base Profile" If you then reimport that file, and then export again, the new export file will have this at the top instead: BaseProfile "Base Profile" SelectedGlobalProfile "Base Profile" I tried removing that "SelectedGlobalProfile" line and reimporting, but it didn't fix the issue in Heaven.

Bump. Can someone please try this and verify? Really should only take a few minutes, and if I'm right, it could explain a LOT of problems people have been having.

I did the test for you, but no problems here ! No changes and Heaven runs perfect ! The only suggestion I have is, run DDU and install latest driver.

No problem here as well. I use this method daily to modify profiles...Not sure what is going on there... Might be tied to Heaven...

It can also cause profile problems I think. If you have more than one display connected, is the problem still present with the others disconnected?

Wow, I really expected otherwise, given how consistently reproducible it is for me (five times now).
The only suggestion I have is, run DDU and install latest driver.
That has been part of my reproducing the issue all 5 times, with driver 361.91. I will note, I never had an issue with Heaven before, so it may well be limited to this driver. If any of the "can't reproduce" attempts above were with a different driver, please let me know. I will note that the NVidia Backend process that has been a part of the last few drivers even *without* GeForce Experience, I have disabled in Task Manager startup. I do still get the Nvidia Control Panel icon in the lower right area, though, which I didn't use to until the last few drivers.
Are you using the GeForce Experience? Just reproduced it again. My only steps: On a fresh install of 361.91, Heaven works fine. Deleted nvdrssel.bin Open 3D Profile Manager Export profiles Import profiles Heaven no longer works. Note, by the way, that "Stereo 3D: 3D Vision" is required to reproduce this problem. In fact, here's all the settings for Heaven: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5hpkme1xoed50c1/HeavenBug.PNG?dl=0 Let me know if that link doesn't work.

I have W7 64 361.91 without GE and can not reproduce the issue. When you reinstalled the driver, did you choose the "clean install" option? It's possible that the profile is being corrupted because it is trying to save previous settings.
When you reinstalled the driver, did you choose the "clean install" option?
Yes, every time. Did you have "Stereo 3D: 3D Vision" set in Heaven? Previous post contains link to all my Heaven settings. It doesn't happen if Stereo 3D is set to Disabled. Note also (kinda obviously) that for the 3D to work it must be set to Full Screen. I tried it with Full Screen unchecked, and it worked, but obviously only in 2D. BTW, I have the green lettered 3D information display turned on. Prior to the profile import, that lettering (the text that can be disabled with Control-Alt-Insert) is the first thing to display. When I run it after the profile import, that text does *not* display. I just get black screen and notification sound and, when I escape, an unreadable text box. I greatly appreciate all the help and attempts to reproduce so far, btw.

I exported and imported the profiles after deleting nvdrssel.bin and ran it again with no issues, the only difference is that I have 1920x1080 for the resolution. W7 64 980ti VG278HE 361.91 without GeForce Experience installed.

Hmmm. How about the Nvidia Backend process? Disabled in task manager? I am on Windows 10 Pro x64, for the record. I will retry the entire process with the Backend process enabled.

Reinstalling the driver and importing profiles with NVidia Backend enabled: no change. Disabling the 3D info (Control-Alt-Insert) in Heaven before importing: no change. This is getting really frustrating. I so wish I could see the error message (if that's what it is) that pops up whenever I hit escape when the issue occurs, but it just blinks off almost instantly. No errors are reported in Event Viewer Administrative Events log. Does Heaven have any error log? I've googled trying to find where it is but have failed.

To those who attempted to duplicate (thank you again): What version of DDU were you using? I've been using the most recent, 15.7.4.1. It's the only thing in this process that I can think of (other than the driver itself) that has changed since I was doing profile modifications and Heaven without issue. I have multiple backups going all the way back to just after a clean windows 10 install. I'm going back to January 8 now, and will try whatever the current DDU was back then and see if it happens.
