Nvidia 3D Vision with Asus N53SN and Optimus technology
  1 / 2
Hello, I am a newbee with 3D and I am french (sorry for my english) I have a portable pc Asus N53SN-SZ126V with Optimus technology : there are two graphic cards An Intel HD Graphic 3000 and a Nvidia GeForce GT550M. I would like to watch 3D movies using an Acer H5360 video projector (which is 3D Vision Ready) plugged in with HDMI. I have Nvidia 3D Vision glasses and USB transmitter. The problem is that I am not able to assign the GeForce graphic card to the HDMI output therefore I cannot turn on stereoscopic 3D in the Nvidia control panel : in the Nvidia control panel, there are the same settings as when there is no video projector plugged in. Is it a problem of detection? What can I do to? Thanks per advanced for your help.

thank you but how can I do that? I have just update the BIOS to the latest version available on Asus website and there is no option for disabling Optimus or the Intel graphic card in it Could there be a modded/unlocked BIOS somewhere? EDIT : i already did a fresh install and tried to install only the Nvidia video drivers but it refused to install saying I have to install Intel video drivers first

I don't know, but there are threads discussing it. Maybe someone here can help, or try googling it? I don't think it's a driver level thing, I believe it would be a bios setting. Not sure if all laptops allow you to disable it, too.

I have asked Asus and they answer it is possible to use Nvidia 3D Vision through HDMI on my laptop. But they didn't tell me how... There are other threads in this forum discussing it but no solution yet.

It seems that if you have a laptop using Optimus, you need to have a direct connection to the Nvidia GPU in order to use an external Display. So since the HDMI doesn't work you could use the VGA if it's connected to the discrete GPU. You'll lose HDCP, but you could use AnyDVD HD to remove it. Or you could rip the movies to you hard drive to remove HDCP (maybe not Cinavia) and play them back that way. If you only have outputs coming from the integrated graphics, it seems that you'll be unable to use 3D Vision. So you'll need to use DLP Link glasses, then try trial versions of Cyberlink, Arcsoft and Corel to see if they'll output the frame sequential format that the H5360 requires without having to use 3D Vision.

Except that Asus support said specifically that he can make it work through HDMI for this model. Try this: 0) Plug in your emitter. 1) Hook up your H5360 via HDMI port on the laptop. I know for sure that H5360 works in HDMI mode, because this is the mode I use. 2) Set the Acer as your primary, and only screen. Disable the internal. 3) Using that 1280x720 screen, look at the NVidia settings for stereoscopic. If I'm right, you will be able to set stereoscopic there, because the driver will recognize the projector as 3D ready.

@bo3b : I already try this and no new options came up in Nvidia Control Panel when I disable the internal, the screen turns black and i have to reboot when I click on Advanced Settings in the Windows Screen Control Panel, I have the Intel settings, not the Nvidia settings. I can choose 120Hz frequency for the H5360 but it is useless because it is through the Intel internal graphic card. @D-Man11 : I will try to use the VGA (even if Asus support says it should work with HDMI)

I have tried on the VGA port when I click on "Detect" button in the screen resolution windows (not the Nvidia control panel) I am able to choose the Nvidia card and to assign it to the VGA output and there are new settings in the Nvidia control panel but the changes I can do in Nvidia control panel does not apply to the ACER H5360 : it is as if the NVidia drivers detect a "virtual screen" on the VGA port

Do you see Acer H5360 as the choice in the stereoscopic popup? I ran VGA on this projector for awhile, and I would occasionally have it glitch and not recognize the projector. Try an alternate VGA cable, and make sure to use a good quality one, like the one that came with it for example. If that doesn't seem to help, trying loading the .inf for the projector manually.
I have just tried to disable the Intel graphic card in the device manager and I got a black screen
Shure, but just reboot. Force shutdown (7sec/take out battery) and reboot. Intel hd3000 will be out just passing through the data. In my case all screens still worked after reboot, but none of my programs was able to detect the nvidia graphics card, when i looked back at the device manager no screens were available the nvidia showed up as working and the intel as disabled.

Seems like a more normal state for 3D Vision with just the 650M showing.

I reboot and I have only one screen at the time : the laptop screen or the Acer H5360, not both The nvidia drivers work but I cannot open the Nvidia Control Panel : it says there is no screen attached to the nvidia graphic card. When I try to reinstall Nvidia driver it says I have to install Intel driver first
