Yaysome! I think the consumer version will be a day one purchase :-)
Really? I have read a lot of positive responses other then the shitty screen (low res, motion blur etc). When it is fully integrated with a AAA game, I think it will be a major way most of us will play. What other negative things are you talking about cooky? If it's the dodgy 3D via 3rd party drivers, i think that will all get fixed... Fingers crossed.

And motion control, and walking around an elder scrolls game might become one of the most enjoyable Rpgs ever. Play a horror such as amnesia, and it may very well break you!

Mainly going off that.
Its not just the resolution that is the issue, and with your eyes pressed against it even 1080p might not be enough. Compatibility is going to be a big thing, I'd guess if games have slightly off effects you couldn't just deal with it like with 3D Vis, you'd puke EVERYWHERE.
But meh I haven't used it. It does sound interesting, and as much as I'd like it to I don't think it will go anywhere.

I am hoping for this. I need to replace my Sony HMD

I think for me it's the idea of size that would get me. There are many tests to show our spacial perception is easily altered. Aka, if the oculus rift shows everyone as massive and far away you will feel like you have been shrunk. That sense of space and size could add a level of immersion that a tv can never trully give you (although a massive projector in a pitch black room might). But you cant crouch and get closer to the floor, which for me would be mind blowing.
I read bo3bs review before, i didn't think it sounded too bad. All of his complaints were what i thought would be limitstions of the device when i first heard about it (and why i didn't order a dev model). A 1080p screen will be a minimum needed for a good experience (imo) but i think it will then offer a much better experience with a game specifically developed for it, than 3D alone.
Also, even though you may be right about it not going anyway (history would suggest strongly that you are right) there is enoughninterest from top devs to keep it going. Gabe Newell was having a big moan how input devices have not changed since kb&m, and that this needs to be improved (and he id kinect was not the way forward). I am positive that if hl3 exists, it will feature full OR implemntation. Such a killer app could be enough to launch it into the semi main stream if the hardware is both good enough and cheap enough.
Or i could be fantasizing, and i guess we wont know for sure till 2014-2016. Still, at least new ideas are being explored to increase immersn into a really enjoyable hobby :-)

I still think its going to be awesome for first party games[Anything a developer does themselves]. I just dont think a renderer that I personally will ever be happy with will happen. I dunno, unless Im really motivated even if something like helixmod comes with shaders I probably won't work on it. VR is just... well its hard. I think actually getting a unit is going to ruin alot of people's fantasies. Not even from a developer stand point but from a consumer [Im still not sure what I am lol....]. People don't want to be bothered with setting up/tweaking/ etc. Its alot more complicated then 3d vision.... and people dont want to be bothered with that. Not to mention the Rift community [besides the earliest buyers], are no where near tech experienced for the device. Will see what happens I guess. I just doubt that developers are going to put training wheels on everything.

I'm gonna be optimistic today. I think the rift will mature MUCH faster then 3D vision has. The rift community is already larger then the 3D vision community and the thing is not even out yet! We can only hope that DEVS support it. Valve and ID are great but we need interest from EA and UBI. I'll be getting one no matter what, but I'm not expecting it to replace my 3D vision surround setup. It would be a cool experience if we get a handful of AAA titles that support it for the first year.
DX11 could be the death blow for 3D vision this year (still praying for Helix to come up with something) and I'm hoping we can get some kind of excitement for 3D gaming.
I wonder how 3rd person games would look/work on the rift? Anyone try playing 3rd person games with the rift or is it really just for FPS games?

Just First Person. Its too much work for little benefit for third person. Then I'm not even sure about cinematics/camera views. I think it would need to be optimized for rift[increased]. Otherwise squashing [Games are generally designed for low fov/consoles].
If 3D Vision/Tridef were to go *POOF*. Perhaps, it requires a certain amount of motivation I suppose you could say. Keep in mind, games not done by helixmod are paid by nvidia generally if not out of the box compatible. Have to rely on dev's "good will." If I was a developer of a third person game, Id pass. VR doesn't really benefit too much from Third Person. Unless you are pretending you are the camera man.... or some creepy pervert in Tomb Raider [2013] *Drools*
edit:
Omg, awesome idea for a game. You play the camera man, in like a super hero type game. Where you are trying to stay alive from enemies... but the hero you are recording is also a jerk [Doesnt mind a bit of area of effect/ catching you in crossfire]. Some1 make it happen *claps hands*

.....and as the cameraman you have to get specific shots and then edit a scene or trailer and at the end of the game you will basically make your own epic movie where everyone will have their own unique film with their own edits, etc.
Now, just need to pitch it. LOL.

Epic games has announced support with their Unreal 4 engine.

Its kind of like 3d vision support, dev still needs to do use it.... but then again I havent heard any thing about UE4 support for 3d vision yet. So yea, they in better shape then us on that front =/

I know Nvidia is a integrated partner of Unreal 4, but only listed for PhysX and APEX. No 3D Vision listing just RealD 3D. :(

I just read the front cover article about the Oculus Rift in Edge magazine. I highly recommend it for anyone interested. It was useful to hear about some of the unique problems they've encountered (eg. they realised just how exaggerated movement is in most games, and how much more subtle it needs to be in VR, since your sense of motion in VR is much more sensitive and 'real'), and how they've solved various issues that VR has had in the past. It' was also great to read just how many high profile devs are totally excited and on board.
It's got me more excited than ever about the Rift. My prediction is that 3 years from now:
-VR will be what 3D-vision is today: 'This is the only way I ever want to play games from now on'
-3D-Vision will be what 2D is today: 'What a step backwards! I'll only play a game this way if I really really really love the game, but I'll bitch and moan about its lack of VR support first.'
-2D games will be what browser games and emulators are today: only for casual gamers and/or hardcore retro-heads.

I just don't think people are going to put the money down for it. If you buy a 3D Vision monitor, and you decide you don't care for the 3D, you still have a monitor. What use is a VR headset?
Also, its only any use in first person games, no not only does a game have to be compatible, but first person. Probably going to be pretty slim pickings.
