Like Noalias my display is not detected. With previous driver versions (up to the 1.15 CD) I could simply select the generic CRT option and everything worked fine. With 1.16 or 1.17 this option isn't available and the setup wizard won't let me select anything but "3D Vision Discover Glasses" i.e. anaglyph. Do nVidia even bother testing drivers anymore before releasing them? For a long time I've suspected that the problems with the 3D Vision team's feeble output were a result of a "lions led by donkeys" type of situation. I'm now beginning to fear that "donkeys led by donkeys" might be a better description. If you have a generic CRT, DLP TV or DLP projector then my advice is don't touch these drivers with a ten foot pole.
Cheers,
DD

im guessing the same is with DLP users using samsung
as my drivers havent worked since 1.5 too ( tried 1.6 and 1.7 with corresponding drivers)

Avatar has worked fine for me......fine in the fact that it does not crash (1.3 drivers cause i cant seem to figure out how to get the new ones.......i know im a feeb). I get the same framerate issues as others have mentioned. One time i play and its choppy/playable and without changing anything (that i know of) its smooth and very very playable. Compaired to Crysis (which is close to the same "lushness") this game plays fantastic on my pc, even when its choppy so if there is a chance to make it better i will jump in and update my driver to 1.17 if i can too. Worse comes to worse i will roll back the driver.

Ok, here we go. I downloaded the new drivers and updated to newest ones (11/26/09 release) with NO PROBLEMS. I was required to do my first time set up with 3-d vision again, everything went well. My nvidia control panel was set not to start in 3d. I started Avatar and straight to display settings and changed to dx 10. Avatar will only start in windowed mode while in dx10 no matter what i do to change this. I changed back to dx 9 and restarted the game. This got the game to run full screen again. I Left everything defalt; low to fire, phisics and trees I think, the rest were between high and ultra high with shadows at med. I started the game without 3d enabled (also not forced in the nividia control panel). The game started very smooth in 2d and almost no studder changing to 3d during the opening cut-scene. Once on the ground everything was much better, so much smoother. I changed to a X-box wireless controller while i walked and ALL stuttering ended........smooth as butter-it would seem the game pad allows the game to run even smoother (check this for yourselfs and tell me im wrong). I only played till my first fight with the jungle cat-things as i wanted to check out what happens with multiple creatures on the screen at once. I re-ran the game with highest settings possable- all high or ultra high. This produced the same results as befor updating my drivers and running at far lower settings which is to say super choppy/playable. I re-started the game at all high settings which produced a very smooth game. This driver update seems to have helped me greatly. Everything Avatar related for me is way way way better. It even says the game is supported and excelent (did not say this for me before). I can say GOOD JOB NVIDIA, this works very well for me.

I'm glad you got it run well. Could you post your 3D monitor brand/model pls?
Also to all the guys who install the new driver could you guys post your hardwares or monitor brand/model pls? You see, I'm very reluctant to upgrade to 1.17CD in fear of it not detecting my Sammy DLP TV just like the 1.16CD . It's a big hassle to uninstall Nvidia ntune system performance, then uninstall driver/S3D then reinstall just to see your monitor is no longer detected then again uninstall/reinstall the old driver and ntune tool and resetting up gpu/fan profiles.
On a side rant that's not particular to just Nvidia alone but to any GPU driver update: the whole procedure is just ridiculously boring and time consuming for nothing if it didn't work. Sometime I wonder why can't devs come up with some incremental code patching and undo mechanisms so that user has to just click one button to install and another to undo the latest install for frequent update things like graphics card drivers.

So far there have been reports of both 1.16 and 1.17 not working on 3D Vision certified Viewsonic projectors, generic CRTs, generic DLP TVs (like the Samsungs) and generic DLP projectors (like my HP MP3222). From the length of the list it looks like they didn't bother testing these drivers with anything other than the two bundle monitors.

Totally agree - I wasted the best part of an hour going through this process when installing the 1.16 beta drivers only to find they didn't allow me to use anything but anaglyph so I had to roll back to 1.15. When the 1.17 drivers were released I naively assumed that since these ones were WHQL certified and the problems with the 1.16 drivers had been well documented in this forum that they were bound to work properly. Alas I was wrong - I guess it's just more proof that not only do nVidia not bother to write anything in the 3D Vision forum, they don't even read it.
Cheers,

Just a quick chirp to those of you believing in the mystical powers of WHQL driver releases: All the WHQL seal means is that the driver has been sent in to Microsoft, and has then been certified by them to be running in a stable fashion on all supported Windows platforms.
Most of you probably knew this anyway, just a quick reminder I guess...

Yeah I realise that, but whereas the 1.16 drivers were only a beta, it's not unreasonable to assume that for an official WHQL release nVidia would have at least tested them properly internally prior to sending them to MS for certification. Apparently, however, that is not the case.
Isn't there a way to trick n'vidia control panel into detecting a generic display for it to work?
Nope. In previous drivers you could select the generic CRT/DLP TV option but in 1.17 this isn't possible. I've even tried editing the registry to match previous entries I had with earlier working drivers but that doesn't seem to work either.

It even says the game is supported and excelent (did not say this for me before). I can say GOOD JOB NVIDIA, this works very well for me.

From the length of the list it looks like they didn't bother testing these drivers with anything other than the two bundle monitors.
It's a big hassle to uninstall Nvidia ntune system performance, then uninstall driver/S3D then reinstall just to see your monitor is no longer detected then again uninstall/reinstall the old driver and ntune tool and resetting up gpu/fan profiles...the whole procedure is just ridiculously boring and time consuming for nothing if it didn't work. Sometime I wonder why can't devs come up with some incremental code patching and undo mechanisms so that user has to just click one button to install and another to undo the latest install for frequent update things like graphics card drivers.
Cheers,
DD
