Its good to know that you speak from experience.
Imagine how stupid you would look if you said all that without any first hand knowledge of it.
I understand that some people find that it is not for them. If I may ask, what were your reasons?
Are you mocking me? Cause I just came back from a lecture on programming for 3D stereo :D anyway you guys said that the image only need rendering once, this is true FOR OPENGL. D3D based apps use the windows screen service and to Microsoft's ultimate wisdom each screen is rendered separately except for cloning but this is a nvidia work around. Yes you are right about only needed to be rendered once but Microsoft took the fun out of that didn't they! And then the Ray Tracing physics well lets just hope you have a beefy CPU.
And what I said about the falcon. I had the privilege to go to Leadtek's VR labs and the falcon is really primitive compared to that! But under Law I'm not allowed to tell:/ But it is a good first step for consumer VR. And 3D stereo was blown out of the sky! But then Nvidia doesn't seem to faithful into consumer 3D. YOu know loving Zalman to death and all....
I will explain more about the programming if you want me too.

Just because you have some programming knowledge doesn't mean you are the "be all" and "end all" of VR.
It is true that VR is total immersion. Stereo3D may not be this but it is a BIG step towards it.
So tell me... what senses do you rely on the most... Ask yourself which of the 5 senses of perceiving reality is most important to you... Which single sense would you trade most of your other senses for?
Most importantly: if you were forced to choose, would you or would you not choose to keep your sight over combined taste, touch and smell... hearing even? Well?
Eyesight is by far our most important and most cherished sense. Why then, do you feel that anything that improves greatly on this sense is a gimmick?
Lets compare your argument to something else.... another one of our senses: Hearing.
You are saying that you would be perfectly content with mono sound over stereo sound (monitor Stereo3D) or Surround Sound (Head mounted display)?
I would point out that Stereo3D might not be total immersion, but it certainly immerses a player in a game many-fold 'with' than 'without'. It is easy then to see that it is not a gimmick but a serious technology that adds a lot to a game. I should know... I have been using it for the last 10 years.
Lastly,
How can you say your statement was not a troll. It not only looked like a troll but it was arrogant and wreaked of ignorance. It's like going to a Christian forum and boldly proclaiming "I'm not trolling but there is no god". What did you expect? maybe for people to say "oh! ok then..." and go on their merry way?

You can taste the "basic" tastes such as sweet, salt, bitter etc. without the use of smell.

Sorry, I don't want to pour any more fire on the flames.
And I agree with the OP. Game devs should definitely push for stereo 3d support of all methods.
