Questions about WoW 4.0.3a and 3D Vision
  1 / 2
Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and to 3D Vision and I'm asking this here because I haven't found the answer anywhere.

I play WoW (latest patch 4.0.3a) with the newest drivers for my GTX460 (260.99). WoW runs nice, 3D Vison is working. But there are some glitches I want to know if there is any way of fixing:

- When running DX11 mode, nameplates above other chars aren't affect by 3D (rendered flat 2D). That makes it difficult to focus between game and the name plates (DX9 works fine);
- With DX11 or DX9, water effects are messy, weird reflections over it. If the area has lots of water area, I have to turn 3D off to be able do play;
- And the most important question to me: Is the UI supposed to be 2D? I mean action bars, minimap, buffs and debuffs, etc. That's a big problem for me when using 3D cursor. The cursor transition from the game to the UI and focusing are really a pain.

Hope to hear from you.

EDIT: I've noticed the same water glitch described above in other games like Left4Dead 2.

Nope all of those are real issues, and all of them would need Blizzard to fix them.
Play in Dx9 and set the water quaalry to fair.
The 3D mouse cursor is a god send, try playng without it.

The UI desn't bother me with the exception of the players unit frame, I had a working mod that would position it above the player at his/her depth, but Blizzard removed the camera API's to prevent a different mod from working.
The current Blizzard UI API allows you to change the 3D depth of any interface element, but there is no way to get the depth of the player, if blizzard were to add a player nameplate, you write an interface to key off that, but I don't think stereo 3D is high on Blizzards priority list.

Edit: The reason you see similar water glitches in other games is because it's not trivial to render the reflections with the correct depth.

Thanks ERP for elucitading the issues.

By your answer on the UI issue, it should be possible to "lock" the camera at a certain comfortable distance of your character and configure the UI 3D depth for the same depth. This should work at least when the camera doesn't move intentionally.

Do you know how we can set the UI 3d depth? Is it native or do we need an addon?

Thanks again.

It requres an addon.

every UIFrame now has a stereoscopic 3D depth value.
Since most don't override it, you could probably write something to iterate through the top level frames and set the depth.
What I've done most recently with my UI is reduce the size of the viewport vertically, putting the UI on the bottom of the screen putting all of the UI elements on that, that way you don't have 2D elements sitting ontop of 3D elements that might be in front of them.

How do you guys/gals deal with clouds? They are rendered much too close - like being only a few feet away. Is there any way to disable them?

You learn to live with it.
Blizzard would probably have to change the way the sky is rendered to fix it, and that's not likely to happen just for us S3D users.
To me it looks like Blizzard draws the sky first without writing Z, so everything appears in front of it. Rendering the sky properly would probably take a dev (and possibly art resources) some time to make it look good, so I wouldn't expect it to happen.

I will start playing with UI addons to see what fits me more. I don't think I have the time to write some code, so I'll look for an addon that changes the 3d depth. Thanks once more ERP.

Will post the results.

There's issue with setting 3D depth of UI.
Friend of mine, who's good with coding addons, tried that. Problem is for some reason they are not rendered correctly at proper depth, and also parent windows to it. Also, for some reason some other windows get weird depths... overall, it's messy.

He did change code of some addons to make it work, but AFAIK there is no general purpose addon for it - as for each window that's open it needs to be done within that addon.

DX11 - forget about it... way too many bugs in S3D, as you've noticed.

As for clouds, that shouldn't be too much of an issue to fix for Blizzard. If they want to fix it.
