I just wanted to point out how awesome this great feature is. Weeks ago I had the opportunity to test the Asus Rog Swift and thus 3D in 1440p. I was absolutely impressed by the 3D experience it gave me but in the end I decided that 3D Vision Surround is the overall greater experience. But again 1440p 3D is a really great experience.
Somehow I totally missed that Nvidia incorporated the Dynamic Super Resouliton feature in their driver some time ago. This feature basically gives you an up to 4K-like experience on your 1080p monitor. While I was very skeptical at first I am totally convinced now.
All you need to do is activating DSR (Nvidia Control Panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings -> DSR factors). Of course 4.00x would give you the highest quality. But caution is advised since this feature definitely bears heavily on your GPU's performance especially when also using 3D. You also need to set the DSR smoothness. The higher the DSR factor is set the lower you can set the DSR smoothness (high smoothness factors lead to a slightly washed out picture). Since I am using the highest DSR factor (4.00x) I totally disabled the DSR smoothness. After enabling DSR just as described above you should be able to set the resolution in-game beyond the usual 1920x1080. This step is crucial of course. It is not enough to just enable DSR via Nvidia Control Panel. You need to set the higher resolution in-game!
Let me tell you this feature totally delivers! Now I have the opportunity to use my Surround Setup in games where 3D Vision Surround is supported but in those games where Surround is not supported I am able to enjoy 1440p/4K-like 3D-graphics on my 1080p Acer monitor. I was really disappointed when the Surround support for Mortal Kombat X (via Flawless Widescreen) was disabled with the last MK X patch but now with DSR enabled I can totally enjoy the game again.
This is definitely no marketing trick. If you haven't tried it yet I strongly recommend to give it a try as soon as possible!

I am also experimenting with this at the moment. Even though I am not completely sold yet. Thanks for the hint concerning the DSR smoothing. I was wondering why some of the games actually looked more blurry than before and as being myopic I definitely do not like blurry images.

I know no one here thinks like this, but it is a very common statement in other PC communities / social networks and even jounarlist starting question high-end systems following jealousy in PC gaming - especially in Germany.

This might be driver related. I would just re-install the driver (clean with DDU). But of course this might depend on if you experience such bizarre mouse behaviour also on other Windows options?

It's also worth noting that this works for projector users as well, and dramatically helps. I've always used the manual timings to add specific resolutions trick, and added 1600x900 and 1920x1080 for same aspect ratio resolutions that were selectable in-game. DSR is the same idea, but easier to use.
In games where you have some horsepower to burn, turning off AA, and turning on this downsampling makes for a terrific experience.

I too was late to the DSR party, and I love it. I use it wherever possible, especially in games like Witcher 3 that have shit native AA (though unlike bob, I like to keep the native AA on as well). I can usually only afford to do 1.25% or maybe 1.5% DSR though.

@clammy: it's basically just raising the resolution, so it raises the performance cost just as if you'd raised the resolution normally.

If it's 2D, as in it doesn't have to render polygons, then yeah it should run significantly better.

DSR is very taxing yes. DSR is basically lazy AA, where rather than using something like MSAA to only render selective sections at a higher resolution, DSR is just saying render everything at 4K(or whatever resolution you select) then downsample it.
Since 4K is 2x2 as many pixels as 1080 (4x as many) it should be 4x as costly to render out than 1080.

I'm still looking for a way to do the opposite, render an older game at say 800x600 and output it at something relatively close to but under 1080p(1400x1050) and still keep checkerboard 3D intact. If I choose scaling on the GPU I get weird patterns and no 3D, if I choose scaling on the Display I just get a smaller black-bordered(1:1) screen ... still don't understand why it's scaling/screwing up the checkerboard pattern.
