Yeah, checkerboard mode still renders full 1080p for both eyes. Very wasteful, but it looks miraculously like full 1080p, probably due to its completely unscaled nature and the fact that the two images are blended together into one single image by your brain.
Just to be clear, i get no eye strain with my monitor at normal viewing distances, and the TV is very comfortable because its even further back. In fact, my far sightedness problem that was developing for awhile completely went away when i switched to a TV because i wasn't focusing so closely all day long. I was mainly referring to when i pulled it closer to give a bigger FOV that it got uncomfortable.
You might want to get feedback from some other users if your still deciding. There has been a lot of new developments in the last few years. TAB on a 4k 3DTV sounds pretty awesome, especially if you need the resolution.

I wanna buy projector now, thats limited to 720p anyway.

Buy projector and do not even think about something else. The 3D experience is far way better from any monitor or TV. I am having 125 inches large picture and its just best for this purpose but not only for 3D Vision but also for 2D movies. And you can always pack it into small backpack and take it with you anywhere..
Regarding 720p I was also sceptic but in fact you do not realize that much in many games unless you look for single pixels. Especially using Anti Aliasing.
Other advantage of 720p - in 3D switched on FPS drops down so lower resolution makes performance more or less same as usual (1080p). So you dont have to spend another money for better PC/GPU or lowering details...
I am more than happy with projector. I have monitor, I have TV along with it and I only use 3D on projector. And most funny thing - you can buy fully working used 3D projector for few hundreds dollars.

46" Samsung ES7500 3DTV (checkerboard, high FOV as desktop monitor, highly recommend!) - Metro 2033 3D PNG screens - Metro LL filter realism mod - Flugan's Deus Ex:HR Depth changers - Nvidia tech support online form - Nvidia support: 1-800-797-6530
