GTX 970 4K 3D VIsion gaming success with LGUB850V Passive TV
1 / 44
Hi anyone, first post here, just wanted to share a little discovery which occured with a bit of luck.
First, i plained to have my Kodi (xbmc) running in 4K resolution, and on the other side i wanted to be able to play my games in 3D vision with Full hd res.
Here's my rig : 2600k@4k8mhz, 16go Ram 1600 mhz, MSI GTX 970 gaming,Samsung 830 SSD
Display : 4K LG TV passive : 55UB850V
OS : Windows 8.1x64, Geforce drivers : 347.25
So i encountered an issue : if i use the Acer HR274H Edid overrride to play my games in 3D vision, i was limited to 1920x1080p res, even with Kodi , because my 4K TV was identified as a Acer monitor (i know that's the goal :D).
So i had an idea. I plugged an hdmi cable from my tv to the hdmi on the GTX 970 (msi gtx 970 gaming), and an over one from the TV to a DVI on the GTX.
I set it up as this : hdmi 2.0 port on tv to hdmi on GTX : 4K res set in windows
hdmi port on tv to dvi on GTX : 1080p Res, Edid ovverrided as Acer HR274H
I does not clone the displays in display options. Using the windows+P shortcut, i switch from a screen to another. So if i want to use my 4K res for kodi, i switch my tv to hdmi 2.0 entrance, if i want to play 3Dvision, i switch it to the other.
After the Edid override, i was able to activate 3Dvision on the Overrided entrance on my tv.
So i was pleased with the result, being able to enjoy 4K on one side, and 3Dvision on the other, just by switching my TV entrance.
Last week, i launched a game (Rayman legends), i wanted to play it in 4K, so i didn't switch to my "3Dvision" setup. And wow, game launches at 4K res as usual, but it also has 3Dvision active :D
The game is running 3D interleaved at 4K RES . A bit excited i tried my other games, and the fact is that ... it works ! Hre's a list of games i tried at 4K 3D :
Rayman legends (smooth 50+ FPS)
NFS rivals (smooth 40+ FPS with registry 60fps hack)
Watch Dogs (smooth 30+)
Trine 2 (smooth 40+)
Dragon age inquisition (hell i need more power, but anyway, 15-25 fps)
SF X Tekken (smooth 60 fps)
Tomb Raider (smooth 35+)
Oddworld (smooth 50+)
So, does this work as intended or did i find something new and interesting ?
On a sidenote, when i update my driver to 347.52, the trick seems not to work anymore ...

Cool :)
I'd like to know how your getting 4k interleaved res as I have a 4k sony and the Acer edid only gives 1080p interleaved.
Are you selecting interleaved in your lg 4k 3dtv's 3d options to get this working ?
Thanks

@mocca, i really don't understand how, i think it's not intended and maybe the fact that the TV is plugged throughj two hdmi inputs with differents edid did the tricky part of it. Read carefully how is my setup.
@pirateguy, i will upload some screenshots when i'm at home

Here are some screenshots. Tooked it from my phone, the alt+F1 combo for 3D screenshots doesn't work for me.

As i was struggling with 3Dvision settings i noticed another very strange behavior. When i switch from hdmi 1 (caer Overrided EDID at 1080p) to my hdmi 3 2.0 (4k RES), in services.msc, the nvidia stereo service is disabled. Anyway i got 4K 3D working, at 60 fps, and i can adjust the depth with ctrl+F4, like shown in the screenshots in my previous reply.

formicro - thanks for information. I hope that you contact NVIDIA Customer Care and formally request 3DTV Play update. See https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/809649/3d-vision/please-add-hdmi-2-0-support-to-3dtv-play-/. This HDMI issue is really something that NVIDIA should fix, rather than simply settle for user work-arounds and experimentation.

Well done, damn me I cant get this to work :(
I get " 3840x2160 isn't a 3d resolution " in red text ?
Driver 345.20
Would be awesome for the whole community if we could get a video up of the process, from installing edid override to enabling 3dvsion with 4k interleaved, I sure would be greatfull a million times and then some.

This is what did the trick for me :
Drivers 347.25
Plug a hdmi entry on your tv to a dvi on gtx 970
Install the Acer Edid Override.
Activate the 3D in nvidia control panel, launch the 3D assistant
Plug a HDMI 2.0 entry from your tv to the 970 hdmi
in display settings, set the display to "display only on (the one with the edid override)
Use windows+P¨to switch from Edid (DVI) to non Edid (HDMI) display
Set your tv on the right port accordingly.
Profit ? Good luck

Technically, you are not using 3D Vision.
You are using "Nvidia's Stereo Drivers" via "Optomized for Nvidia GeForce" support for Passive displays.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/optimized-for-geforce-3d-overview.html
3D Vision = Full Frames and requires Nvidia's 3D Vison kit
Optomized for Nvidia GeForce = Iterleaved Frames and requires manufacturers glasses.
So a "note" for those that do not know better, 3D Vision glasses "will not" work with Passive displays that use a Film Pattern Retarder.
Yah, I just wanted to clarify for any novices that happen upon the thread.
Nvidia's product pages for "3DTV Play", "Optomized for Nvidia GeForce" and "3D Vision" are somewhat underwhelming.
But, I'm definitely interested in your findings and hope that Mocca can duplicate it.
What game(s) have you had success with? Oops, I see the game list in the first post now.
Tomb Raider 2013 has 4K support and might be a good game to try.
I think all 3Dvision playable games can work. I tried some others this afternoon, all with success : ori and the blind forest, remember me, resident evil 6, asseto corsa, ethan carter, alan wake.
I really can't understand where the trick is. Nvidia stereo service is disabled, but games launch in 3D, and i can adjust the depth of field. Strange strange strange. If someone has an idea ...

And just a word to say, the 3D is cristal clear, nice depth, and fps are ok for most of the games, except the most complex like DA inquisition or Tomb Raider(for which i have to lower some settings).
