I believe they are talking about the current and crappy nvidia "stereo driver"... It's in quotes because i use the term very loosely.
You can make out what seems to be a Zalman in the background me thinks.
And the writer of the article seems to be the usual nVidia lackey... doesn't know the facts and hasn't bothered to research them but instead regurgitates the spin straight from the nVidia PR team's mouth.
As they say... never let a little thing like the truth get in the way of a good story... or a suck-up-fest.
How many times have you read a news article or seen a news report about a subject you actually know a thing or two about and found it to be horrendously misleading if not outright lying?
Makes you wonder how accurate all the other articles and reports are where we don't know about the subject matter... kinda scary when you think these "reports" and "articles" are the sole basis most people use to form an opinion on a subject.
Even scarier... Fox News /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />
Did you know that there are no laws against willfully reporting false or grossly inaccurate news?

Yes, I was very upset about this news story. To even suggest that game developers don't need to worry about S-3D and that NVIDIA would take care of everything...it has to be some kind of misunderstanding. What's next, is NVIDIA dropping TWIMTBP?

It says that this is a "new" driver (releasing early summer), will allow 2D games to be displayed in 3D (I'm assuming they mean 3D to stereo 3D), and would not need a specialized monitor for stereoscopic 3D display, only glasses.
I am not too informed of the current Nvidia driver, but I'm pretty sure that it still needs a specialized monitor for it to work. Either this is the same old driver being advertised by ignorant reporters, or it might actually be a new driver that will allow games to be more easily available for S3D play. I don't have much hope, but I would love it if it's the second, as currently I'm not able to purchase my own special monitor with S3D support.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disappoint you there friend,
What they are talking about is the feature of the current stereo driver which lets games be played in cheap red/blue glasses mode. You don't need a special monitor for that but the image quality is pretty much the worst you can get when viewing stereo.

If so, however, the article's phrasing would have to have been the absolute most efficient way to mislead a person. They made it sound much more than just cheap red/blue stereoscopic 3D.
However, you will still have to purchase a pair of 3D glasses, also designed in Nvidia's laboratories.
"...designed in Nvidia's laboratories"? If it's the cheap red/blue glasses, that's, frankly, a stupid way to phrase that sentence. It doesn't take much "designing" to have one lens red and one lens blue.
The new technology is expected to work with any gaming title, given the fact that the 3D effect is not rendered on-screen, but rather on the user's eye via the special glasses.
There isn't much new about the red/blue glasses... Maybe the technological application to video games might be moderately new, but the idea of the use of anaglyph images in stereoscopy has been around for years. Also, it says the "[the effect is rendered] on the user's eye via the special glasses." I don't see much rendering going on with red/cyan filters, unless you use the absolute basic meaning of the term, but in regards to technology the term is usually used in a more technological sense. Also, these "special glasses" aren't so special if they're just your run of the mill red/blue glasses. The emphasis on the fashion of these glasses makes it sound more like that of the polarized glasses we hear of from companies like iZ3D...
I still don't have much hope, I think they're just trying to make the current drivers sound more attractive than they are, but I still am hoping I am proved wrong. These are just my 2 cents about what doesn't add up about that article. However, it's very possible the reporter embellished and manipulated the minds of readers such as me to convince us of something more spectacular than reality. /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

"There will be other products/devices supported in the future".
Just thought I would mention it. Only the future will tell.
"Nvidia's Drew Henry models the working prototype of 3D glasses."
The so labelled picture is a problem.
This article has already been translated in several languages and started raising some unfortunate buzz: I hear people losing interest in Zalman screens and dreaming those mirage glasses... Complete non sense! : In the best case they are shutter glasses... :o
I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia was about to come up with shutter glasses bearing their own brand and a proprietary driver. But at this stage, We need an official statement from Nvidia.
something as simple as : Is Nvidia going to release shutter glasses ? yes or no.
At least we'd be able to explain they are shutter glasses /geek.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':geek:' /> and not magical glasses... :magic:
PS : On a side note, Drew Henry, on the picture, seems to be standing in front of the same old Age of Empire 3 demo Nvidia was showing on CES back in january ... if so, it really isn't a scoop on april 30th !!! Once again a journalist gets it all wrong and does more damage than good to stereoscopy.

It is always the same... the promise that Nvidia is working in same better solution/driver. And always they show us some driver beta small modification result afther some years, when all people is bored. They use us as beta testers and, when the driver is comercially ready enough to be played with recent games, they force us with an insane condition to use it... to change our good (and not cheap) hardware and buy a monitor that gives a worse quality. This is the condition if you want to continue working for them like a betatester.
I prefer not to imagine what condition they will force us if they discover a really definitive way to see stereo. Nvidia has done a good thing for us in the past, but not doing a great effort, only they did a good driver once, and with that they obtain an special loyal comunity and a difference in his battle with ATI. A lot of people has bought Nvidia cards only because Stereo compatibility, and now Nvidia destroy this relation with an abusive exigence. I don´t understand.
I prefer not to imagine another "solution" from Nvidia. All I have spent is time, and all Nvidia has stolen us is time and illusions. Nvidia, follow the quality, not only the money, and you will receive money and reputation. These estupid monitors are not the solution, and all the comunity is unhappy... why?... we will have the response in two years, like always.

What I wanted to ask, is what do you have against 3D screens ?
Shutter glasses always gave me headache, while passive method used in 3D screens doesn't. Now, those screens are less than half the price of polarized dual projectors...
On the other hand, we have rumors about new shutterglasses here, if you still want to use these awful googles you should be happy. And if you are looking for the ultimate solution, don't worry it's coming back: IZ3D is taking over the dual display driver that Nvidia had temporarily discontinued.
The road has bumps but ranting is not helping us push up the chariot...
PS : if you're still not convinced I think you should check This Video, because if it's true, I think we should not worry about the content of the new driver.

What do you can use NOW if you wan to play recent games?..... don´t speak me about the future because we know what it mean (speaking about nvidia and the support philosophy for stereo3d drivers).
Now the only way is to buy a Zalman monitor (or IZ3D), or to use anagliph red/cyan glasses. This is the true. Anaglypn glasses are a prehistoric way to experience stereo 3d (sorry if anybody think another thing). Zalman monitors show only half of the resolution to our eyes (I have not used it, but this is enough for me to know that I have no interest in them).
About IZ3d... well, I have not seen, but I have read about, and seem to need to be better.
We had better choices using shutterglasses or planar types with our hardware, it is better and no need to buy another thing. We only need a driver without censures. If Iz3d release a new driver supporting shutterglasses & planar, it would be a good notice, but it is the future, and it is not sure and not sure if it works well. If Nvidia release a special shutterglasses to use with their drivers, it is the future too.
NOW we have no choice, and Nvidia changed his policy about the drivers only to get something not very well thought (I think). And we see we have bought Nvidia videocards with some features that now Nvidia say SORRY, IT WAS NOT TRUE, IT IS ONLY TRUE IF YOU BUY A MONITOR TOO.
Sorry for my poor english, I can not say exactly what I want, but I think people will understand.
About the video... I am a happy person (I think). But if Nvidia steal a right that I have when I bought a product, I need to say. It is very better not to support than making a support like this.

Not a Planar expert but I think it might work with the -present- IZ3D driver.
Have a nice gaming weekend amigo.
PS : I really can't say that I fully stand for Nvidia's driver policy either. But I certainly don't want Zalman screens teared down in flames just because people are angry at Nvidia. Zalman screens are good products and anyone new to stereoscopy who wants to try a 3D screen shouldn't hesitate.

Of course, zalman monitor must be a good option for beguiners, and more if we know what is doing Nvidia. This is a sure way to sell monitors, of course, this is the reason of all we are writting. But this is not the correct way, people has not why to be forced to buy this monitor, people must be convinced that this is the best choice (but it is not the best, of course). Maybe they need to do a better monitor?. But never force us leaving out important options to choose. People must decide.
I will never buy it because it seem not to have enough quality and because I can´t follow the Nvidia INSTRUCTIONS using this way (it goes against my principles).

A cheap and good planar setup can be done with 350 € using two 17/19" lcd monitors + special mirror (I have two viewsonic 17" widescreen lcds). It is not easy to make a good base to support monitors and mirror (this is really the key to have a good experience), so most people choose the easy way, shutterglasses + crt, but the result is better using planar, of course.
No ghosting (well, it is practically zero ghosting), good colors and brighness, low space in the desk (it is really only one lcd monitor in the desk, and the mirror can be done to move up if you are not using stereo), and enough freedom for head movements. But this is nothing if you have not the nvidia driver support, so forget it.
PD: Where can you find the Zalman ZM-M220W monitor to buy for 500 €?.

What they are talking about is the feature of the current stereo driver which lets games be played in cheap red/blue glasses mode. You don't need a special monitor for that but the image quality is pretty much the worst you can get when viewing stereo.

"There will be other products/devices supported in the future".
Just thought I would mention it. Only the future will tell.

But at this stage, We need an official statement from Nvidia.
something as simple as : Is Nvidia going to release shutter glasses ? yes or no.
At least we'd be able to explain they are shutter glasses
PS : On a side note, Drew Henry, on the picture, seems to be standing in front of the same old Age of Empire 3 demo Nvidia was showing on CES back in january ... if so, it really isn't a scoop on april 30th !!! Once again a journalist gets it all wrong and does more damage than good to stereoscopy.

I will never buy it because it seem not to have enough quality and because I can´t follow the Nvidia INSTRUCTIONS using this way (it goes against my principles).
