Low FPS on HL² with 3d vision don't understand why...
2 / 4
I have a GTX285, and also have some severe frame drop in some scenes.
When I enter Ravenholm and I'm in the sector with the building and the fire infront, my FPS drops to below 10.
Other source games like Team fortress 2 or Left4Dead work flawless.
Perhaps HL2 is too old to work good with the glasses?
Ok, thanks everyone for your advices. I just ordered a gtx 275 which seems to be the best fit for me, and if it's not enough i'm thinking about SLI. I will post my conclusions once i installed the gfx card !
PS : I only hope there was informations about the configuration necessary for the game in the nvidia 3d vision menu when a game is launch !

That's why using 3d introduces mouse lag and a stuttery image - 60 fps isn't smooth. 100 or 120 is, but 60 is still pretty choppy. Unless, of course, you've been using an LCD and you're used to the low framerate and getting raped in online fps games.
60fps really is smooth, and i dont know where you got this "raped at online fps games" from, maybe you use it as an excuse but 60fps (or indeed 75fps like a lot of flatscreens can handle) is fine for onlione fps. i have played the entire UT series since they started in '99 so i know how important framerate is.
the confusion comes when your gfx card can only handle the game at 60fps when not much is happening on screen and when stuff happens it drops lowerer. the difference is that my gpu is pumping out something like 200fps, but 60 is being displayed. this means that the fps never goes anywhere near below 60, remains constant and smooth.

vsync may be forced on in stereo mode to limit it to 120 fps, but I can guarantee you it does not limit to 60 fps as msm903 is suggesting. I can get nearly 120 fps in several games in 3d mode (although I don't think I've ever seen it break 120fps IN stereo mode, but I'm not sure if that's due to a forced vsync or just gpu limitations. I'll try turning a few games down to their lowest settings tonight and find out if it's possible to break 120fps in stereo mode).

i thought 120fps while you are in 3dmode is effectively 60fps, fram rate reporting tools will say 120 as thats what the card is outputting, but they are shown alternatively to each eye so its effectively 60.

I'm not 100% clear on this either, but I don't think that's quite how it works.
120Hz = 60 fps, which by your logic would translate to 30 fps for each eye. So I don't think that can be right.
Either way, in my experience ~60fps [reported] in stereo mode will appear totally fluid & smooth; anything below ~30 fps [reported] will appear choppy; and anything in between will appear "ok". At fps above 60, I don't see any difference.

As we know it's 60 hz to each eye, and I read long ago that V- sync is a must in 3D mode or else it will flicker like crazy so nVidia made it simple and lock V-sync!
So 60fps it :)

None of my games do more than 60fps with 3d vision on. that's just the way the system is built. the gpu does 60 frames per eye max with 3d vision turned on.
Doesn't matter anyway even if it did more if it did 70frames per eye.. only 60 of those frames will be displayed per eye anyway...

LOL dude, I don't need to fraps anything to prove this to you. Do you have dual 285s? If not, then no wonder you can't break 60 fps. /whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':whistling:' /> I can. Period.
If I kick LOTRO down to 'Medium' settings I can easily pull down 100 fps in stereo mode, in the middle of 21st Hall no less. :P

I must admit I only have 2 9800gt in SLI.
And for LOTRO (or any other game) did you use the ingame tool to tell you the FPS output or any other tool similiar to FRAPS? while using Stereo 3D. That's all I'm asking?

Both the in-game fps display and my G15 fps display (which is processed directly from EVGA Precision). I've never used fraps, but my understanding is that fraps itself will limit your fps as it uses a considerable amount of processing power just to run.
I have a screen saver and a couple of other 3d apps that are known for extremely high fps. I'll try them tonight with 3dV just to see if the drivers limit stereo mode to 120 fps or not and report back.
But I assure you it IS possible to break 60fps in stereo mode.

Well if the in-game fps and the G15 are telling you that you are getting over 60 frames persecond per eye then I'll take your word for it.
Even though I don't have a premium video card set up ( I really don't see the use for it currently) as I said all my games max out at 60 frames per second per eye. Thus my Vid card setup is producign 120framers per second max, with 60 fro the left eye and 60 for the right eye. I would expect my system to at least give me more than 60FPs per eye on some of the older games.
Even if they did produce more than 60Frames per second per eye it would be kinda counter productive In my opinion. After all each eye only gets 60 refreshes in a second. What happens to the remaining frames produced in that second? It's impossible for the current 3d vision setup to dispaly more than 60 frames per eye within a 1 second interval. What happens to the additional frames that are being produced. If they are still sent to the screen then you end up with lag, if they are discarded then it would have been a waste of time to even generate the additional frames, if not then we also have tearing that comes into effect. tearing and 3d would not be a nice effect.

OK, so now of course, because I mentioned it, I can't reproduce it. lol Something in my system is forcing vsync on whether I'm in stereo mode or not even though I have it specifically turned off in the nvidia control panel and nhancer. Maybe it's the new 185.85 drivers? I dunno. I can't get anything to display at more than 120 fps in regular mode or 60 fps in stereo, no clue why (actually 122 in regular, 62 in stereo...no clue why on that, either). I have most certainly seen higher fps in both scenarios in the past. Specifically, I have a screensaver (3planesoft's "The One Ring Screensaver") which I really like but had to turn off because it displayed something insane like 1300 fps and made my gpu's squeal and overheat -- now even that appears capped at 120 fps.
Anyway, I'll figure it out eventually and report back.
**EDIT: it IS the new drivers. If I disable 3d mode entirely in the nvidia control panel, my non-stereo mode fps are uncapped. I can easily exceed 120fps (and that screensaver goes back into the 2300 fps range lol). But as soon as I re-enable 3d stereo in the control panel, my fps are capped at 120 in non-stereo mode or 60 in stereo mode. Apparently it's forcing vsync in both modes whether you enable vsync or not. This was not so with the previous driver version (1.07).
So, in essence, you are correct that fps are apparently capped at 60 in stereo mode (or 120 in non-stereo) with the current 185.85 drivers.

Well of course it capped at 60fps aka for each eye in Stereo 3D, it was one of the first thing nVidia said Chris ;)
it's pretty obvious we must have 60hz for each eye or else it would flicker as I allready said and the tearing would be unbearable and we would get no 3D effect!
ateast i think it would flicker but im sure without having the frames synced it would be NO 3D at all!
Yeap to get over 120hz then disable stereo3d is the only way to go for 2d gaming!

When I enter Ravenholm and I'm in the sector with the building and the fire infront, my FPS drops to below 10.
Other source games like Team fortress 2 or Left4Dead work flawless.
Perhaps HL2 is too old to work good with the glasses?

I think Qazax is a pretty cool guy. eh kills aleins and doesnt afraid of anything.
vsync may be forced on in stereo mode to limit it to 120 fps, but I can guarantee you it does not limit to 60 fps as msm903 is suggesting.

I think Qazax is a pretty cool guy. eh kills aleins and doesnt afraid of anything.

Okay please do provide us with some screenshots using FRAPS of the frame rate above 60fps using 3d vision.
ALT + F1 does a screen capture.
60hz per eye.

LOL dude, I don't need to fraps anything to prove this to you. Do you have dual 285s? If not, then no wonder you can't break 60 fps.
If I kick LOTRO down to 'Medium' settings I can easily pull down 100 fps in stereo mode, in the middle of 21st Hall no less. :P

Yeah the 8800 series is really strong, but for S3D I would prefer at LEAST something in the gtx260 or 280+ range... that is until the next wave of monster graphic cards come out ! :D

So, in essence, you are correct that fps are apparently capped at 60 in stereo mode (or 120 in non-stereo) with the current 185.85 drivers.

it's pretty obvious we must have 60hz for each eye or else it would flicker as I allready said and the tearing would be unbearable and we would get no 3D effect!
ateast i think it would flicker but im sure without having the frames synced it would be NO 3D at all!
Yeap to get over 120hz then disable stereo3d is the only way to go for 2d gaming!
