Watching Avatar in 3D was a very satisfying experience - because I was quite disappointed by the 3D impression of this movie.
The reason: Avatar was my first 3D movie after I've bought my 3D vision bundle some months ago. Nevertheless playing games in S3D still feels "new" and overwhelming to me. I feared that a cinematic 3D experience could reduce my enthusiasm about watching S3D on a small monitor.
But this didn't happen at all. In the contrary coming back from the movie I started my PC and the demo of Avatar The Game - and that was the moment I was blown away! The S3D experience the game offered was so much better than the movie in the cinema.
Some reasons: The movie offers a stereoscopic depth that is IMHO equivalent to 10-20% on the 3D Vision scale. As I use 100% in almost every game the movie really looked flat to me and I felt the impulse to grab the depth control wheel every minute. Especially the background had almost no depth so the pictures of landscapes and the flying scenes were very disappointing. Another reason: a game provides You with the possibility to explore and move within a virtual 3D world. So You can not only see the depth of the world but also "feel" it. The difference between playing a game and watching a movie is like walking through a landscape by foot and sitting in a train. And not only sitting in a train with no influence on Your movement in space but also with Your eyeballs and iris beeing controled by another one. In a game there is usually no depth of field (or You can at least turn it off). So everywhere You look You can see a clear picture as it is in real life. In the movie only the area the camera is focused on offers a clear picure. The rest is blurred. That is a limitation and feels unnatural.
I love S3D because of it's immersive effect. And in this regard S3D games offer a much better experience than a movie - especially than Avatar with it's reduced 3D effects. I can understand that the producers don't want to overburden an audience with no S3D experience. But to an experienced audience it is simply to flat. Reminds me a little bit to RE 5 with the fixed convergence settings…
So I definitevly won't watch Avatar The Movie a second time but buy Avatar The Game instead ;)

My original display name is 3d4dd - for some reason Nvidia changed it..?!
I have seen it three times since opening day. First time at an Imax theater by far the best, next two were RealD. Thought the story was very good and the CGI was just flawless. Have to agree the 3D could have been a little deeper there were some scenes that were a tad flat, but by far the best movie of 09.

-heres my rant
Saw it last night on sunday in Imax with my girl and another couple ,I had ordered tix online last wendsday so I could make sure and have tix and planned to get there early and it was the most horrible movie experience I ever had ...front row seats off to the side in Imax what a wast of money ,they shouldn't even have seats so close .. how is that an Imax experience!, I couldn't even see what the hell was going on most of the time I had to keep looking around so much I had to leave for a while to calm my nervs.
I liked the movie , think it is one of the best sci-fi movies there is , but my dumb ass friends had to be late getting to my house , I wish I never went at all and just went with my girl on time and got good seats or even I brought my own truck so I could have just walked out and blow my money on the first show and get more tix for a later show but sadly no
The cool parts were that being so close made the 3d pop right in front of my face I could reach out and touch it it was so close , seems they did tone it down during high action scenes but for the most part it was the best 3d I ever saw.
also my friend couldn't get used to the 3d and it was burning his eyes and making him sick, at least he suffered through the movie for making us late.
but still , I would go and see it again but not with a group , never again.

Cool find! It's strikingly similar!
Nonethless: Avatar is splendid as movie and really great in 3D. An advice for seating in a stereocinema: The best spot for viewing is probably in the middle. It's way better sitting back than in the frontlines. You experience more depth when sitting back than in the front as well (don't ask how come, i have this phenomena at home too). So: You had really bad luck with the placement. Those seats should be blocked when showing 3d!!! /devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
