Enabling 3d Causes 70-85% FPS drop in certain games?
  4 / 6
Just so you know, Batman Arkham Origins also stuttered for me when I had the GTX 760, after some drivers version (I think bo3b warned us about them). The current drivers fixed everything, although I only tried them with the 1080 (the 760 is dead). I have just tried Skyrim without vsync (2560x1440, always CPU limited and with very few graphical mods), and I got wildly different results: - Sometimes 3D fps were half the 2D fps. - In other normal situations, I got around 2/3 of the 2D fps in 3D. For example, 52 in 2D and 33 in 3D. - When I looked at the sky, I got 172fps in 2D and 147fps in 3D. And I wasn't GPU limited in the 3D case. No CPU core was even near 90% usage. But you know, Bethesda engines :p. I'll have to try more games without vsync and see what I get. Edit: in Shadow of mordor, around half the fps. But in 2D I get very high fps, so I'm always above 60fps in 3D.

Isn't this sort of weird? Mafia 2 3D Vision On - around 30fps driving the car 3D Vision Off (crtl+T) but still enabled in the control panel - around 40fps 3D Vision disabled in the control panel - around 140fps with some drops to 100fps and ups to 180fps It is like even after turning off 3D Vision it still affects fps. Like there is something making the game run poorly but it has nothing to do with the actual 3D effect.

I mentioned this before is a similar thread recently. Turning 3d vision on in the control panel used to force vsync on. That's something that was confirmed years ago by Andrew Fear when we used to have regular nvidiarepresentation on this forum. This confirmation came about when people were asking the same quescion. Things might have changed in the meantime with adaptive vsync etc. but sounds like it still forces vsync.
Its been a long time I dont try tridef, i think the license cost was the reason i never looked into it. But hell! it does worth a try! So just installed tridef 14 days trial. So far the results are pretty good! Mafia 2 - 75/80 fps (compared to 30 fps when driving in 3D Vision) The 3D quality seems to be the same as 3D vision. Assassins Creed 2 - 60fps with few drops to 45fps (compared to constant drops to 25/30fps in 3D Vision when running in the city and same sort of 3D quality) The only issue that I noticed with tridef and which is kind of annoying is that on AC2 it seems like the depth sort of jumps down and up a bit sometimes, like you can notice something is changing in the screen. I haven't played any other game with tridef yet to see if this happens with all games. If this can be fixed i think it is a great solution, i would say the 3D quality is basically the same (at least for my eyes) and it doesn't require too much of the hardware like 3D Vision does, which in my opinion is bad software design from nvidia. Unfortunately, tridef has a limited number of old supported games and no more updates or active community, so dont know if it worth buying the license.

Try turning Custom Focus off for TriDef With Nvidia, have you tried turning Aero Off and setting your desktop to 120Hz? Have you tried turning off v-sync in the game and in the Nvidia control panel? Do you have the "apply this refresh/rssolution rate to all games" checked? If so try unchecking it. Do you have DSR enabled? If so try turning it off. Using Windowed? Fullscreen? Try switching it.

I just ran the benchmark for mafia 2 all setting MAXED @ 1080P 3D the average frames 78.9 and never went below 60 Also the PhysX was set to high which is a killer in this game. So I would have to say it is old hardware. The NVidia 3D driver is working as it should.

But the fact is, why 3D Vision runs so bad in this hardware when any other 3D technology runs perfectly fine? The only conclusion I get from this is that 3D vision was badly designed to only run on top hardware which is not necessary at all to produce Stereoscopic 3D. I run Rise of Tomb in SBS all max at 60fps no drops, haven't tried turning off vsync to see the real fps, which would probably be way over 60fps.

The only thing I can think is a older driver but that is not possible due to you own a 1070. I think the newer drivers work better on new hardware. Just remember this problem started when you installed your 1070. I would bet you system would probably work better with 980Ti and a older driver.

My next purchase will have to be a Rift or Vive. I am not going to invest in new hardware unless necessary to run VR. For now maybe getting Tridef to run old games @ 60fps seems to be a good option. And for new games I can still max out and get over 30fps with 3D Vision, as it seems doesn't matter what resolution, antialising and any other settings I choose, I aways get around the same FPS in 3D Vision. In Ryse Son of Rome all max I get around 40/45fps with 3D vision.

Just a word on Tridef it uses a different tech then 3D Vision and you can switch the profiles out for newer games. It's hit or miss with switch profiles best would be to check the Tridef forums. Also SuperDepth3D is nice for games without any 3D and works with everything it's free.

@ D-Man11 Thank you for the tip. I turned on custom focus and adjusted the focus settings just like convergence in 3D Vision. it works great now on AC2! 60fps beautiful in 3D just like 3D Vision! I am definitely buying a license for tridef as it runs better in my pc.
