So I watched Avatar 3D Blu Ray. Nvidia 3D vision + Acer H5360 3D projector = Amazing
  1 / 2
Im a huge Avatar fan. Seen it 4 times in various theaters (true imax and realD theaters) and a fan of 3D in general so last weekend I setup a cheap $500 Acer H5360 3D projector (720p) and a cheap $40 Infocus 80" screen along with the Nvidia 3D glasses. Avatar 3D bluray was truly amazing. It looked BETTER than most of the theaters. There was less jerkyness, and the picture quality was better since it was so much brighter even with this little Acer projector. The problem with most 3D theaters is the brightness of the picture is far too low to bring out the true detail of the movie. I was shocked at how much better this cheap little setup looked compared to the theaters. The only down side is since the Acer projector is only 720p you lose detail if you want to sit very close to the screen to get that great "immersive effect" by completely filling your field of view and this specific projector is not bright enough to do 3D on a screen larger than 80". Still, anyone who misses watching Avatar in 3D should seriously try out this setup. Skip the 3D TVs IMO. Even a 50" 3D TV is too small for 3D and far to expensive for what you get.

I hate Panasonic and James Cameron for making this a panasonic exclusive.

Don't flame me, I get it really I do, I know its about money, but being that we are all 3D fans here, why wouldn't James (or the studio) wanna get that blu ray in as many people's hands as possible to help grow the 3D market. Making it a panasonic exclusive isn't helping promote 3D, since people who have any other brand of 3D tv can't purchase this amazing movie.

I am totally jealous that you got your hands on a copy and wish I could run out right now and purchase it. Oh well maybe when the contract runs up in 2013 I will finally get to watch Avatar in 3D on my couch :)

Yup me too.I watched 3 3d movies this weekend with my Optoma HD 66 setup in my family room with a 100" acoutic transparent screen.
I have 2 pairs of the ultras and 2 pairs Nvidia glasses. I used the computer to run everything. We watched 2 Imax films Grand canyon and Space station both excellent quality Zero ghosting great popout . then we watched Monsters vS aliens all I can say is FANTASTIC, I am impressed with this 650.00 projector .I also have a HD20 1080p in the family room so I did a comparison well all i can say is there is not $600.00 difference worth. We went and saw the new James cameron flick the cave diving one ????in Real 3d, Our home 3d is better, really even my wife and daughter agreed.Drinks were alot cheaper too. Do like 5th element says ,dont spend more money on a 3d tv that has no popout and ghosts.
I found too that if you move farther back the depth gets real good.(10-12ft or so)
Ps I agree with Thiefcat what a DUMB idea that was for a exclusive for Avatar ...and they wonder why people download.. Stop pirating by releasing movies at a price that is affordable. I had to pay $36 for Space station.
Yikes!

How close to the screen are you when you begin to notice pixel structure or loss of detail? I'm thinking of getting your exact setup (besides the screen).

If you want a bigger screen, I highly recommend trying the Da-lite High Power. It has a screen gain of 2.4. If your not familiar with screens, at maximum, it will make the image 2.4 times brighter than a normal screen. I have a 106" one and it is bright!

lol, You shouldnt believe advertising. There is no way a screen is going to increase brightness of a projector 2.4x Its a gimmick and false numbers pushed by companies to sell units. My Infocus screen is a clean white and 80" IMO is the max you can go if you want a nice picture in 3D. Also note that I am running my projector in ECO mode since normal brightness mode causes too much fan noise for my liking. I guess you can try 106" screen but it wont be bright enough in Eco mode for 3D. We're talking about a small projector here, its not going to perform miracles. In Eco mode you dont even notice the projector fan noise and it hangs just 2.5 feet over my head. Anyway with an 80" screen I sit about 8' away from it and everything looks perfectly crisp whether I sit 12' or 8'away. 7' away you can notice detail lose but it still looks decent an watchable. 6' away is when you get that great "immersive effect" where you feel like you are inside the movie but at 6' you notice the screen door effect and the detail lose is too great IMO. I mean we are talking about a 720p projector here. Honestly for the price of the Acer its amazing what you get. If you do get it remember to change the "3D Mode" to Nvidia 3D Vision. Acer has a pre-configured video setting specifically to cope with the color saturation and brightness lose that comes with the 3D glasses and its a nearly perfect config. Dont bother trying to adjust the video settings yourself.

Very interesting post, really.

After surfing the net I have some questions about setting up a rig with this projector for htpc gaming and 3d movies:

Here I read:
"Optoma projectors cannot be used to display 3D TV broadcasts or 3D Blu-ray discs. Optoma projectors may support these applications in the future but will require additional hardware at extra cost." /fear.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':fear:' />

mmmm... does that mean I cannot watch 3D blurays with PowerDVD through my GT480? /omg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':omg:' />

What about SBS movies or games?

Is THIS Optoma GT720 model any better? specs are veeery simmilar.

I found a good price ( $617.96 ) for the HD66 at Amazon, anybody knows any better deal?

Now the main doubts are what do I need besides the projector and htpc:

Is it better to buy the Optoma glasses or the Nvidia 3D Vision Kit? Why?

Optoma glasses are half the price of Nvidia 3D Vision /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> , but which one will be best for htpc and console gaming and movies (SBS and 3D Bluray)

Thanks for not sleeping through this post. /thanks.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thanks:' />

Just purchased this projector also. Very nice price drop on it recently. I agree completely. The shutter glass experience is light-years beyond what those cheap polarized light glasses can do, both in terms of color reproduction and high contrast ghosting. Although the acer does have over saturated colors and some minor DLP rainbowing, the picture quality for a $500 720p projector is absolutely stunning. In an added note, the built in signal processing for a 1080p signal is just nuts. I can READ 12 POINT text on this projector when downscalling from 1080p to 720p. I didn't even know that was actually possible.

I much prefer the higher perceived contrast ratio provided by a slightly off white screen; however it's totally a mater of personal preference. Hint: if you really want to increase brightness . . . use a mirror for a screen ;P

lol, jealous much /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

any directional screen is much brighter than matte, high power is the same stuff that's painted on roads and signs , so you actually see it the way you see it. In this light your comment is fairly moranic? /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

BTW even silver front projection can totally stand ambient light if its coming from the side only. It's rejecting nicely. Ofcourse RearProjection is the best both at rejection and both at brightness & image uniformity.

And no, you won't use ECO mode anymore ,once the bulb drops to 500 lumen. Get a directional screen and put the projector into a drawer...

Sorry mate but if you are saying that a 1.0 screen gives you the same brightness as a 2.4 then you have not tried them both. There IS a big difference between the two. I myself have always gone cheapo with either Blackout Cloth or WilsonArt laminate but I have compared many screens and there IS a difference. The part that kills it for me is that first, I dont need the light as my project is very strong already plus hot spotting to me is super annoying which is what you get with those high gain screens.

Wrong, theres no hotspot with high power ( glass beaded retroreflective) , or decent RP screens.

I think sparkies are worse with silver than hotspot, makes 2d a pain.

If sub 200 contrast is enough for you then sure , your projector is bright enough.

I wouldn't call that anything decent or strong though.

narkohol, yes you can watch blurays with your graphics card.

Dont know about the other projectors you speak of but i can confirm the Acer h5360 is an EXCELLENT projector - not just for the money, just by any standards.

it really does project a brilliant image when your get it set up right

oh, and the Optima glasses work just fine, the only problem is:

having to manually change left/right eye sometimes

blue tint to screen, which is completely negated with optoma glasses, but not nvidia ones (so you cant really watch using Nvidia and optima)

if you have a giant bulb of a head, like me, the Optoma glasses hurt your head after about an hour - but repositioning them will sort that out.

you have to have the projector on a 3D mode - which puts up an annoying message every resolution change - not so with Nvidia glasses
I used to own 4 pairs of optima glasses, which I sold to buy 3 pairs of Nvidia glasses when i found a site that was selling them for £55 a pair.

Bottom line is, the optoma ones are pretty much the same as the Nvidia ones, with a few minor drawbacks but one BIG positive - the PRICE.

if you can find the Nvidia ones cheaper like I did, then go for them.
