Lord of the Rings: War in the North in 3D Vision Photos and a How to Guide
  1 / 3
Hi All,

Lord of the Rings: War in the North as released today on Steam.

The game is currently rated Good in our driver and looks pretty good, minus a few issues. I posted a 3D Vision game gallery on 3DVisionLive.com http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/3DVisionGames/album/4eb05730378501ea21000039/

A few tips if you want to be able to play the game in 3D though. Our original profile bug was expecting a different executable name for the game, so out of the box 285.62 doesn't have the profile set up properly. We will fix this in the next major driver release.. However to play the game now, follow these steps.

Browse to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\war in the north". Your steeam folder may have a diferent defauly location.

Make a backup of the file "witn.exe"

Rename the file "witn.exe" to "trixie.exe"

The 3D Vision profile will now work.

Please note that the game will likely not launch from the Steam application, you will have to browse to the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\war in the north" to play the game.
Also, when we release the fixed driver with the correct profile executable name, you will name to rename the .exe file back to witn.exe.

If there are any questions, please ask.

Andrew, since this rename workaround does not always work with Steam games, this might be a good time to ask if we will ever get the ability to modify the 3D Vision profile's executable and other settings, similar to the capabilities and functionality Geforce SLI Profile Tool, Nvidia Inspector, and nHancer have provided us?

This workaround is particularly troublesome because renaming the .exe can also cause compatibility/performance issues with the SLI or AA settings if it no longer triggers the normal game profile. At some point, wouldn't it make more sense to merge both Nvidia 3D Vision profile and regular game profiles (SLI/AA etc.)?

SLI profiles and 3D Vision profiles work basically the same way, so I'm note quite sure what you mean.

Generally speaking we dont have issues like this where the EXE name switches on us.

What other games are you referring to where this doesnt work?

    Hi, Andrew!

Most games bought from Steam don't allow renaming of the exe. For example: Deus Ex HR or Dragon Age 2. Even if you raname the exe and try to run it from the installation folder (not from the steam UI) it tries to launch via Steam. Steam does not find the exe and the "Game unavailable at the moment" message appears:( This thing can be bypassed in some games by creating a hard link shortcut...

    So what Chiz is saying:

Does nVidia provide a tool that allows to assign a specified 3D/SLI profile to a custom exe?
    For example:

Dragon Age 2 3D & SLI profile to be loaded when I am executing "my_exe_file.exe"

    Best Regards,

Helifax covered a few of the games, but the Dawn of War games and Space Marine are two other examples that still check through Steam even if you launch directly from the game folder. Even creating hardlinks does not fix the problem most of the time.

What I wanted to see is being able to manually add another .exe or multiple .exe to a 3D Vision profile the same way we can add them to the SLI/AA profiles using the various profile tools out there. So instead of renaming witn.exe to trixie.exe, we could just add trixie.exe to the 3D Vision profile for War In the North. AFAIK, 3D Vision profiles aren't exposed/editable like this, I wanted to know if we will ever be able to change these settings ourselves, whether via tool from Nvidia, or by merging these settings into the existing SLI/AA profiles.

While Nvidia does generally do a good job of keeping up-to-date on shipping executables and providing support for them before or on release date, even waiting a few days is a lot when the better option would be to allow us to fix the profiles ourselves. Also, it seems as if 3D Vision updates are not as easy as an SLI or AA pack release (EVGA does these too), and generally means we have to wait for the next major driver release. Lastly, it would allow us to experiment with different 3D Vision settings if the default profile is not to our liking. While I know you may be against this from a product quality control standpoint, the fact it would require significant manual intervention would mean its clearly a case of "use at your own risk", and it might even result in better 3D Vision experience.

I really hope they implement Surround or multi monitor setup for this game... as the "leaked version" works only on center screen!!! The 3D is fabulous thou! It will be a bummer not to work in Surround!!!
