Donations in the real world
  1 / 2
As an significant contibutor to 3DMigoto I would like to bring up the question of money. I'm sharing significant personal information in public as we are all human beings and we've known each other in the virtual world for a long time. This is not a competition it's people working together that deserve donations. Without Chiri there would be no 3DMigoto. HeliX would never have shared any code with anyone. Without Bo3b there would be no 3DMigoto either and it would probably be unusable. Without me there would never have been a second more stable wrapper that could be used on windows above 7 at that particular time. We should not forget the assembler which allowed us to fix compute shaders etc and go beyond VS and PS. We should not forget about Helifax that created the OpenGL wrapper. We have some brilliant shader fixers but you know who you are and I rather not forget anyone. We need more donations by a lot. Some of us are unemployed right now. DarkStarSword is just recovering from a severe depression and money is tight. Personally I'm retired since I'm too sick to work. So basically I'm unemployed which means I have more time than money. I'm 35 years old and I had to abandon my engineering studies after about 1.5 years as I had my first manic episode. I have late diagnosed atypical autiism. I got the diagnosis a few yeras ago around the age of 30. I've obviously struggled with it since I was born and was heavily bullied in school. Training japanese Ju-Jutsu helped a lot. Got the highest belt you can have when you're young which is the brown belt. You need to be an adult to be able to get a black belt. I excell in various different topicss. I play mainly the violin and piano. People tell me I'm a great photogapher. I was mainly responsible for building a compiler for a pretty revolutionary CPU design called FlexCore. Studied Electronic and Electric Engiineering at Imperial College in London and met lots of people from the commonwelth and lived together and shared a room with people from Sri Lanka. After my first episode I went straight to study at CHALMERS where I ended up with two degrees and in particular a Master in Integrated Electronic System Design. I worked part time a lot with CMS development and homepage design across all browser including Internet Explorer 6 in particular. At most I earned €10 000 back in 2008 while studying full time at CHALMERS. At imperial I was top 8 people after my first year out of 80 people. At CHALMERS I was very outstanding and had the highest grades by a lot compared to the 160 who started. I got 73/71 points on the Haskell exam which was the first course. The bonus points were from doing well on the pre-exam assignment. Things turned ugly late 2009 with reccurinig manic episodes and it took years to recover. Spent months looked up in the cookoo's nest. I spent 20+ times being tortured by the staff as much pain that they have legal rights to incur. 4 hours of permanent torture can drive anyone crazy. I could go on but my point is that some of us are unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. I know DarkStarSword is struggling coming back from a severe depression and I'm bipolar. I recently recieved €100 from a donator and 350 SEK from another. Games are expensive and I just bought DirectX 12 games for €400. I'm still missing a few. Donations really make a difference when you're unemployed. I would definitellly classify some of our fixes priceless. Chiri definitelly wanted to turn his hobby into an income and be able to make a living doing it. He was forced to give up when HeliX released the Bioshock Infinite fix before the kickstarter activated. He made sure people got their money back and got a proper employment and he gave us 3DMigoto for free. Don't get me wrong I have enough cash to survive but very little left after all the bills. Constant medication. Doctor's appointments etc. It's clearly pricier than if I was healthy. I'm still paying back my student loan and have €15 000 left in depth. Don't even want to think how old I will be before I have payed it back in full. By being unemployed for the rest of my life I have a pretty unique situation. Being forced by the circumstances to buy games for €400 this month was not easy.

Hooking up with industry big-wigs worked out quite well for Palmer Luckey - donation-wise. I think 3D vision community's problem is the "fixation" with big studio AAA titles. Not only that, fixation about "geometry 3D" plus AAA games, that supposed to bring cheer, amazement, marvels. Consistently. So you amass a catalog of 3D fixes, because adding binocular disparity thru 3D vision is the icing on the cake. Yes , this should work , in a technophile's world. In reality however, binocular disparity is just one 3D cue . Shading is as important, vergence accomodation, temporal behaviour the list is long. Most people are fine with these other "depth cues" and don't care about "other than screen depth" . My advice: don't put all your eggs in the AAA basket. 3D fixer community would worth its salt if -for example- there would be "strech goals" on "kickstarter" because of "extra 3D cues" that also work _without_ binocular disparity. Make this a trend. I think even some special camera shake effect should work well.

You and the other Gurus deserve the money I gave you. Hope it help you, help us play 3D ! :) Will surely give more if I get other emails. I've try to contact bo3b, but he probably don't check his Geforce Forum mail. Here the thread for donation I made: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1025069/3d-vision/free-donations-to-3dvision-fixers-absolutly-no-request-here-/post/5216801/#5216801 PS: For the story, I'm a small entrepreneur doing selling, repairs, installations of PC hardware/software for the public. I'm not rich, my Rig kinda prove it ! Or I'll have 2 Titan Volta with a Quadro NVLink bridge and an Extreme Intel serie like the i9-7980XE ! :) .

If you want to get big donations I think you should try to make 3d Vision work somehow with Steam VR on Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. 3D gaming as we know it is extremely unpopular and we're very few, if you somehow made 3d Vision work on steamvr devices there're thousands of people on Vive and Oculus Reddit alone that could help you in some way or another. As it is we're very few, and even those that are the most generous can't really make a big difference in the end. I can't even begin to undestand if it's possible on a technical level, but reading about your abilities posted here make me thing you could be one of the few that can make it work. It could even open some job opportunities since VR is very much in demand now, so doing some Flugan magic could help a lot. It could also be extremely helpful to expand the 3D Vision community with tons of new people discovering the tech for the first time and how amazing it is, many of them technically capable that could help with shaderhacking new fixes.
Games are expensive and I just bought DirectX 12 games for €400.
That is a crazy amount to spend on games in a single month. I probably spend less than that on games in a year. Maybe you need to work on your budgeting - is it really important to test every DX12 game that exists? I wish you luck in your financial situation, but it's been pointed out previously that this is a small community While donations do happen sometimes, this isn't a large enough market for someone to make a significant income. I would suggest you don't set your expectations too high, otherwise you may be disappointed. Team up for a single level of a crowdfounded action RPG or similar non-generic shoot em up game and try to be very-very innovative, and shoot for fix 120fps / 60 fps side by side output. Plus obviously some powerful pseudo 3D stuff for "screen depth backers". You have a headstart because of stereo research , and you know what works (screen space stuff) .

There is a vast market of VR headset buyers who are all wondering why the hell they can't play all their games easily in VR headsets. If anyone can break through that and provide a solution I would say its the 3D vision fixers. Maybe that is your solution. Something that uses whatever 3D vision uses to create the side by side image so instead of having a list of 100 or so "supported" games like VorpX you would now have through your kickstarted project access to be able to play any game that works with 3D Vision in 3D in VR using Open VR. Maybe Nvidia would even work with you on that.

"Over the last 8 years we at the ____ team have worked closely with 3D rendering technology to fix over 2000+ (?) games for 10's of thousands of PC Game owners. "If anyone knows how this technologys works, its us" Now, we have partnered with Nvidia to provide a solution that allows any VR headset owner to play any of the 20,000 games supported in 3D Vision in full 3D Virtual Reality" All you guys need to do is get Nvidia on board.. which thhey were about to be with Nvidia VR Works a few years ago until they had a falling out with the headset manufacturers. Most likely because the last thing Oculus wanted was people able to play their existing library of games... they obviously wanted to convince everyone that 'games needed to built from the ground up for VR" and the only way your going to get anything to play in your shiny new headsets is buying games through us for $30-40. The last thing they wanted was Nvidia VR Works using 3D VIsion technology to let anyone play any 3D Vision supported game through a headset. But now all thats died down... Now they just want people to buy VR headsets. Maybe now is the time to get Nvidia on board and maybe they will work with you guys provided there is some motivation for them to do so.

Imagine an Nvidia VR Headset that used 3D VIsion technology and gave you access to play any 3D Vision supported game in full 3D VR. Would be a massive selling point, and they would probably make a killing and would break through to the rest of the PC owning market. TUrn 3D Vision into VR. You guys are the ones in the position to sell it to Nvidia.

I think we are quite off topic talking about VR. First of all I need a VR headset. Thinking of getting a VIVE or both. As with games I need to overspend to make sure I support both headsets. Also thihking of upgrading my graphics card when the new generation of cards arrive. My 980 is quite a bit slower in VR than a 1088 Ti as it stands and next gen Nvidia should be even faster. I'm keeping my monthly spending to a minimum this year to save as much money as possible. I'm already exited for 2018 at this early stage. Just got my dll to work with Store apps. Now I need to figure out how to work within the UWP rules. I'm pretty new to UWP right now. Try to make this thread about donations. Have a suitable VR thread and the same for DX12 and UWP. I will be updating the project flugan thread as well. Getting normal games to run in VR will not be easy and others have a big head start. To set the right fov you need to hack the game and to get a working camera match you're head movements will also require a lot of work for each game. This reminds me of the work needed to get a game running in surround that don't support it natively. Let's get back on the topic of donations. I'm down €80 in the red right now. Thanks to donators I'm no longer €200 in the red so donations help a lot. If I did a kickstarter I'm forced to deliver a result eventually and I might even run into some hard limiitation that can't be solved. I might also not raise enough cash to triggger the kickstarter. Current list of donations since 2014: $20 $50 €100 350SEK Don't be mad if I missed one, I will keep this list up to date over time. These things are hard to do and I'm just one guy with a taste for difficult projects. I'm not alone though bo3b and DarkStarSword has already assisted on my dx12 work significantly. Even some help from Chiri.

Porting non-vr games to vr is in many ways far more complicated than just the graphics. You need to completely rework the way it controls to function with hand tracking, deal with situations where the camera is controlled by the game (locked viewpoint on ladders, cameras during interactions, cutscenes, camera shakes when taking damage...). There's also locomotion and motion sickness to contend with, the need for stable performance at low latency, and elements like huds and menus. Then factor in the fact you're now competing with games built from the ground up for vr... It's not really a practical option for most games.

This helps for 3DMigoto: https://darkstarsword.net/3Dmigoto-stats/authors.html
That is probably one of the most inaccurate graph possible. It does not by any means represent my contribution to the project. Buying and dumping 100+ games. A massive amount of testing and a single run through all shaders took hours to come through. Almost like working on windows itself where they do a daily build as it takes that long to compile. No point in committing all the time as it doesn't matter you progress slowly and work alone until you reach a complete assembler after a couple of weeks of constant testing. Version control software is pretty pointless if you store the changes in your mind instead. The fact that I use Mercurial should also be considered reducing my use of GitHub to a minimum. One thing that is very true is that I write very tiny code and the complete codebase of Project Flugan is really tiny compared to 3DMigoto. Mainly Chiri, Bo3b, DarkStarSword and me are the creators of 3DMigoto. At this point I think Bo3b does not accept donations. DarkStarSword need as much donations he can get. This is not a competition and I don't care if he gets 100% of the donations but Project Flugan will require some additional cash flow to speed things up. When I was young I couldn't afford everything I wanted so I was a pirate pretty much. I did buy quite a few games but buying Photoshop was out of the question. I'm even guilty of pirating Windows itself. As an adult I can finally afford Photoshop Elements 15, Windows 10 Home and Windows 7 Ultimate. Not to mention that my steam library is almost at 1000. I have lots of HDDVD and over 50 3D Blu-ray movies. I have no more need for my Russian steam account with MGSV: TPP which DSS used to fix the game as I finally got the game on my main account. I have three other steam accounts and two blizzard, Origin, Uplay accounts. This is to play multiplayer games using my two computers I have in my living room. I have 8 consoles and no TV. I pretty much fell of the radar for a few years that can be seen in the graph and have a massive backlog when it comes the progression of 3DMigoto. Saw some todo items in the assembler but nothing critical. Most important is to get DarkStarSword back on his feet as he's the real innovator here in 3D Vision land. He deserves more steady money from his patreon work. For me individual donations are enough to make my life easier. 100/230 3DMigoto fixes use the assembler I created on my own. If I could remove the assembler all of these 100 gamefixes would break. This is both impossible to do and not my intension I'm just pointing out how much we rely on the assembler. It might be open source but I still own what I created. If you would try Project 64 they have a nag screen asking for donationos in an open source project with an unlock code. Not sure how they do it but it's not a nice route to go down. I rather have people appreciaite our work and donate because they like what they get. In addition to the authors of 3DMigoto we have game fixers deserving money as well like Helifax and DHR etc. Far too many to mention appropriately right now without forgetting someone since I'm at unpaid work right now.

This helps for 3DMigoto:

Thanks to everybody using my assembler it warms my heart.
To have a critical piece of code that everyone can enjoy!
What more can you ask for?
