Really Dumb Idea : Or Is It? Stereo Drive Update Solution - Feasable?
Hi All,

I too have acquired the guilty pleasure of 3D glasses. Just got a set off Ebay, and to my wife's chagrine, I can find little else to get my attention.

As I have a 6800GS, I have had to force my computer to think it has a 6800GT to work with the old 78.01 video and stereo drivers.

I understand that in order for the stereo portion to work, it requires the same version for both video and stereo.

I noticed that the stereo drivers will install with the latest video driver version, but they just won't work.

I know this sounds too simple to work, and maybe someone else thought of it, or maybe the software is just too radically different to be compatible....but here is my idea:

Can the Stereo Driver or Video Driver version numbers be hacked so the computer thinks the driver numbers are identical?

Is it the version numbers that prevent the two sides from working (i.e. the driver checks the version numbers before giving the ok to work), or are there actual programming hooks that bind them together that are driver specific?

I know...it's a bit cavemanish to think this way - but does it hold merit?

Regards,

Chopper

Some people have had the idea before,a nd even askd nVidia to disclose what needs to be changed in the registry/files to make them work. We have never had a response, and none of us know enough about the nVidia drivers to find out ourselves.

We have not had any word from nVidia about the driver for quite a while.

One of our friends at Guru3D.com started a stereo forum, and he is apparently into it quite a bit. Don''t the guru3D guys have close ties with the RivaTuner devs?

Does anyone know the guy i''m talking about?

Hi Everyone,

I tried editing the video driver INF files, and the version number changes, but not for the individual driver files.

That said, the version number had no effect on the drivers.

The only remaining option is to somehow change the individual driver file version numbers - and I don't know how to do it.

I read the links earlier in this thread, and there was a concern about buggy drivers with mismatched versions. I'd like to rule it out first.

Anyone out there know how to do it?

Regards,
Chopper

For windows EXEs and DLLs, the version is normally stored in the resources table for the executable. There may be some freeware utilities (or a hex editor) out there that allow you to hack the exe directly to change it. Have a search for VS_VERSION_INFO which is the resource that I think you need to change.

Thanks for your input. This may no longer be necessary.

The 82.12 stereo beta works with current 84.20 forceware driver.

I suspect that it's not the version numbers that are the binder - it's internal programming hooks between drivers.
