2x580 and 1x480 for physx , will it work ?
  1 / 2
Hi All,

Just set up two 580GTX 3gb in SLI, i have two 480GTX 1.5gb from my previous machine.

I run 3d vision mode mostly and was wondering if a single 480GTX can be added to the setup for phyx ?

If so should i put the SLI connector across the two 580s leaving the 480 gtx unconnected ?

I'm running windows 7 x64 bit, with 285.27 drivers.

Been running a bit of Metro 2033 lately and notice when theres a LOT of smoke / light effects its dipping below max frame rate with all features on max except for DOF in DX11, so wondered if a dedicated physx card could help ???

Seems like you've got a "luxury-problem" right here. Imho 2x GTX 580 in SLI mode is pretty effing fast for quite anything! (even faster than a single GTX 590).
To add an 480 GTX to it just for Physix would be a complete overkill, though I am very sure that it won't even work to have 2 diffrent graphic cards connected.
3-way SLI won't work either since the cards have to be 1:1 identical for it to work. I mean, you've said you got both cards by hand, so why not try for yourself and see if your system boots with 2 diffrent cards.

No one can answer that question better than you can for yourself. Put in the GTX 480 and see if it helps, simple as that.

Yes it should work, just don't connect the SLI connector to the 480 as others stated. Then make sure the 480 is configured as the dedicated PhysX/CUDA card in the NVCP. Unless they changed the PhysX implementation in Metro 2033 to make better use of GPU PhysX, the best showcase for improved PhysX performance would be Mafia 2 or Batman Arkham Asylum imo.

Wow thats a lot. I would I just be happy with 2 x 580's and sell the 480 for 200.00 but that's me I guess.

Best thing if you run all 3 cards, is that Winter is approaching and you'll be able to heat your house while gaming /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Yah, a 480 is overkill for a PhysX card since you can use an 8 series or later card, that are cheap. Then put that 480 to use in a 2nd system or something.
I'd certainly look into you Motherboard specifications, a lot of Mobos run two cards at 16x, but drop to 8x for all the cards when a third is added.
I sure hope you have have a huge power supply and dedicated outlet straight from breaker box /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well i won't exactly be heating my home , attached pic shows my cooler. Max temp my 580s have seen is 29c. Watercooled / externally.

Good point on the mobo spec, adding the third card will drop to 16x8x8 after checking so that pretty much kills it for me.

Thanks for the replies people .. looks like ill do a sale on the 480s.

That's OK - don't try it before getting rid of the card. Wouldn't want you to find out that this is still a moot point in SLI as no single GPU, when teamed, will saturate an x8 PCIe ver 2 slot. The double-GPU GTX 590 is the only chance of doing that.

Performance tests expose a maximum of about 4% difference, depending on the specific situation, and most often when no AA or post filtering is used in an attempt to maximize frame rates. Considerig the frame rate you'll be running, the use of a dedicated PPU frees up a lot of the timing considerations of having one of your team constantly switch contexts from rendering to GPGPU ops and back again. The overall effect will most likely net a gain in frame rates.

When my GTX 470s are running in 3-Way SLI w/GTX 460 for PhysX, the slots are running x8x8x8x8, and since I crank up the IQ there isn't any loss of performance - the reason for going SLI in the first place.

But I don't see my hardware as a monetary asset either, so I'm not pressed to rid myself of any of the 13 cards I own..

That is correct, sir. Make sure you manually set the 480 as the dedicated PhysX card in the NVIDIA Control Panel under the physics menu.
