Recording 3D game footage
  1 / 2
Hi What do people use to record 3D game footage? Ideally I would also be able to add captions to explain what is happening. This would be for web use. Is there anything out there that is free? Thanks!

This would be for web use.

Is there anything out there that is free?

Thanks!

Just bumping this. Shadowplay records 3D footage but nvidia's 3D Vision Video player doesn't seem to want to play the files. It says I need a codec or two - any idea which ones and where I can find them? Also, is there a place where I can upload them? Is nVIdia Live still the place to hang? Thanks!

Have you tried updating the player? http://3dvision-blog.com/8619-how-to-always-keep-your-nvidia-3d-vision-video-player-up-to-date/ Live and YouTube are the only places for stereoscopic video uploads as far as I know.

3D Vision is still not working with YouTube on any of the three main browsers as far as I know. You could try to add profiles to the browser exe. Such as the 3D Vision Plugin, 3D Vision IE plugin. The other option is to use a downloader and view them with the player. If you have a display capable of side by side or line-interleaved, you can watch them.

Shadowplay is junk for recording 3D, at least one or two versions ago, I haven't tested the last one. FRAPS will do it in Full HD and you can activate lossless RGB.

The other terrible thing about Shadowplay is having to install the GeForce Experience. Good to know that Fraps works good for Stereo 3D recording. What about MSI Afterburner's Predator Video Capture, have you tried it?

Based on what FACTS did you come up with this phrase? Fraps is Software BASED recording -> This means that you will alwyas lose 20-30% of your FPS when recording due to your CPU working 100%. Fraps doesn't use ANY compression. As a result you get MASSIVE uncompressed AVI files that later you need to re-encode. If you record to a mechanical HDD you can also get massive stuttering due to the slow speed of your HDD. Shadowplay/Share -> Is GPU based using the h.264 hardware encoder found on your GPU. As a result you will see a max 5% of FPS drop. You CPU will not work more than normal gaming. Shadowplay uses h.264 encoding. As a result the files you get are already compressed and SIGNIFICANTLY smaller versus uncompressed AVI files produced by FRAPS. Benefits of Fraps: - Allows FULL frames side-by-side recording (while shadowPlay doesnt) - Allows 3D Surround resultion (with a cap of 4000 a width resolution). This means you can't record 3D Surround at 5760x1080 but you can record it at 3840x768 (or any other resolution where WIDTH < 4000). So, my friend I think the only "crap" around here is you for starting writing stuff without even knowing what you write about...

Dude you just wrote it... only FRAPS do good quality 3D recording. That's why I used the term 'junk' for Shadowplay because we are in 2016 and it still do not offer Full HD 3D recording. I know FRAPS is more taxing the CPU and do larger files but hey, if you have the CPU to handle it then go for FRAPS, if not then go for looking bad 3D recordings using Shadowplay which cannot do full frames SBS. Don't say I don't know what I'm talking about when I tried both. BTW FRAPS use some kind of proprietary compression if lossless RGB is not checked, install and you'll see it has it's own codec.

If your main goal is lossless and unaltered recording quality (for something like archival purposes) then Shadowplay absolutely does not fit the bill, and Fraps does. The overhead is gargantuan in comparison, but if you've got the room for it the final result is of a higher quality.

You might try this and see if this works for 3D recording. Shadowplay for Triple Monitor 5760x1080 setups Here is the latest workaround to getting SHADOWPLAY to records triple monitor setups like 5760x1080 1) Uninstall shadowplay and any NVIDIA display driver above 358.87 (otherwise skip these steps and see below) (you must do this since installer wont downgrade) 2) Download the 358.87 driver from NVIDIA (nothing higher yet!) 3) Install 358.87 using custom option and checkmark "Perform clean install" Check box. (you don't have to clean install) 4) Turn on SHADOWPLAY before changing resolution (should be in 1920x1080 on 3 screens) 5) Under GFORCE EXPERIENCE PREFERENCES SHADOWPLAY checkmark the Allow Desktop Capture (gives an icon at the bottom right of your screen, so you can see that SHADOWPLAY is working) 6) Using NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL choose Configure Surround, PhysX. Checkmark the span displays with Surround. 7 Change the resolution to 1920x1080. 7) Reboot. 8) Change the resolution to 5760x1080. 9 Press alt-F10 to write shadowplay. (you must do this once because the first one is always squishy) To get it to work each time you shutdown, reboot or logout. 1) change resolution to 1920x1080 2) shutdown, reboot, or log out. 3) change resolution to 5760x1080 4) press alt-F10 to flush the first "squishy" video.
