Some of you guys on this forum seem to be rolling in it! I often come across posts saying things like, "Oh are they bringing out Fermis? I best get three of them then!"
I was just curious to see what you guys do to keep yourself flush in hardware...

Hi!
I'm a secondary teacher (fairly new one) and have just started a family. I manage to save about a pound a day - so new hardware comes now and again...

I'm a software engineer who lives with his parents. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford all the new toys =) I think it's a fair compromise.

Oh, and I save up a two weeks pay every year to afford good video cards and monitors.

Best way to be rollin' in money, for sure! I've got 3 computers in my room. A Linux server that functions as a MythTV backend and seeds Open Source torrents 24/7, a portable gaming rig (case with handle), and a laptop... My parents and sisters have their own computers as well..
Although I was late to jump on to 3D Vision, I mostly did it to extend the life of older games.. When you can run games like Battlefield 2 at 1600x1200 and max graphics options, it's nice to be able to crank it up a notch even further with 3D vision when you upgrade your cards.. Going from 60 frames per second to well over 100 frames per second doesn't really make that much of a difference, but when you throw 3D vision into the mix, it's quite an upgrade....

Family, that's probably where you're losing all your money.. The only financial obligations I have is Car insurance and taxes.. I just bought a brand new car a few months ago and I just showed up and pretty much paid it all in full.. I really can't imagine how anybody could ever stand to have one of those 60 month loans, where they don't *really* own the car in that they could take it away in a heartbeat if you miss a payment..
It's not a bad idea to be saving a ton of money in a bad economy either.. Stocks have been down for the past year and it's a great time to get into the market so I've also been taking advantage of that as well.. My Netflix stocks have tripled since last year making me an easy 10 grand..

while I'm an underpaid IT Analyst I manage to have lucky months when i have a couple extra hundred sitting arround that allow me to splurge.
I will most likely get the Fermi after it is revised and availability becomes standard and the price decreases. we all know that there aren't going to be many fermi's on the market at launch and it may not be a few months until a steady supply is needed. so maybe in 2011 i'll get me a Fermi. till then my 2 GTX 285s will suffice.

Mechanical engineering student (and veteran) here. The GI bill pays for tuition, and gives me a monthly living allowance for rent, so it works out pretty good. I also just started getting grants (Pell grant, SMART grant, and some other grant), so those keep me papered up, though I am still waiting for one of the grants to arrive, even though the semester is about 1/2 way finished! When that gets here, its time for Fermi, a P55 and an i5 750.

I used to live with my mum and dad and have a job. I even multi-boxed on WoW with 5 subscriptions.
And back then I bought a lot of expensive things. Now that I share a flat with my gf I no longer play WoW, and I'm selling off all the old crap I bought but didn't really use to get my new PC hardware.
That and a saving money mindset, Like asking myself each time I go to step on a bus, "do you really need to? 100 trips is 130 pounds, so walk away from 100 buses and that's quite a lot of money saved for a new graphics card, etc"
Perhaps I should be asking myself when I go to buy a new piece of hardware "Do you really need it?" Naaaah, I mean, yes I most certainly do! :P
That and Xmas + Birthday money.
But until Fermi comes out I guess you can find me at the Bus depo, walking away from buses, looking like some sort of HL2 slave character, exchanging potatoe chips for hardware chips and such.
Oh, not smoking alcohol or drinking cigarettes helps too. (or whatever people choose to do with them on a night out)
People without families to support have a lot of money. :)
