PLEASE ANDREW ... three wishes for the new year!
  1 / 2
Dear Andrew,

I'm using 3D Vision with an ACER H5360 for a year now and I have to say:
The experience is really great if everything works as it should.

But some things are really annoying, so here are my wishes for the next year:

1. Custom maximum depth
The registry “hack” doesn’t work for me and for my 130 inch projection I feel the depth is way too small. Why not implement a small checkbox where you verify, that you are aware of possible “health risk” and then make a field accessible, where you can enter any number you want above 100%? Should be a piece of cake to implement.
This above 100% option should not work only for games but also on the stereoscopic player and players like PowerDVD.

2. Manual assignable 3D profiles
If games are recognized is always a risky game. Sometime it is because of steam, because of another OS language, because of another game version… I don’t know. So why don’t implement an option with the possibility to manually assign *.exe files to any 3D profile? Should not be that hard to implement either.

3. Better game support
I could imagine this is a “political” topic because of how close studios work with Nvidia, but at the moment you really can’t detect a clear line, which titles receive a profile and which not. There are major titles (for example Medal of Honor), which still don’t have a profile others have a profile before the game is released. I would like to see a profile for all major releases even if it says “not recommended”. I would suggest all games which are in the Top 10 of amazon. We are talking about, I don’t know, 5 games a month so 60 profiles a year. I that too much to ask?

It would be great to hear if I (maybe we) can hope for these features in the (hopefully near) future.

Have a happy new year!

Cheers,
Alex

I'm also a H5360/3D Vision owner. Everything works great on the whole. Pretty amazing.

+1. Greater max depth for projectors please! FYI the depth.bat works fine for me as long as I can get the game launched before the script ends (you know that is how it works right?)

2. Official youtube support.

3. Offset eye option for using dominant eye aiming and iron sights. (iZ3D has it)

4. A lower price.

I would put the offset eye option as 1, 2, and 3.

What games are you having problems with? I've mostly been able to find work-arounds.

Any game where you are expected to click on something that isn't at screen depth. X3: Terran Conflict is just about unplayable because you can't click on distant objects. Dragon Age: Origins can have the problem, too. Gun sights can also be an issue if the 3D nVidia sight isn't in the correct spot.

More advanced options including control of:
frustam culling (F11)
sync timing
and a multiplier for the depth wheel

that would be my wish list

I hope the nvidia crew really read this requests. I realy can't understand why we cannot create custom profiles so i can play ports for games like duke nuken 3D, Risen3D and so on. Why not?

I'll give you good odds the devs could have written it themselves. They are probably playing games with this system at home, too, you know. Thinking up ideas is rarely the hold up, it's getting time to do them, test them, and (particularly in this case) support them after they go out to the users. Time spent on these wishes is time not spent on other things. If management thinks the other things will result in more profits than these things, then these things lose.

The simple fact is that people aren't at all sure about this 3D thing. They aren't sold on the overall effect yet. Until that happens, these sorts of changes just aren't going to affect sales. (Of course, when that does happen - it would be a good idea to have the best drivers out there.)

I would like "3D Vision Ready" games to include the same options for adjusting convergence as standard games. Its kind of a sick joke that I can get greater depth and 3D effect on games that are supposedly not supported than on the ones the developers supposedly made for 3D. Having a nice starting profile is great, but give users the option to adjust the settings as they please.

Hi Andrew,

since it looks like you had some time these days to be active in the forum, I give it another try:

Any answers, especially to point 1 & 2 ?

1. I agree with you and we will add it to our roadmap since its needed for projectors.

2. We currently require profiles to be generated in house. We can explore some options but I dont have anything concrete on a roadmap yet.

3. I'd love to support all games, and I always try to do it. Some game developers are more interested in 3D than others. The community is the biggest ally I have to help convince game developers to make their game better. So get active on their forums, twitter, facebook and let developers know for new titles coming you want 3D Vision support.

So we will not really see that "Best Played with nVidia" splash screen any more I guess if it is up to us to convince game developers to pay attention to S3D... Wait for AMD to catch up then.

And I think it really lame to ask users to convince game devs that your tech is good. I do think its your job to do this on our behalf. So go and post on their forums - 3d vision is your company's tech which we bought into.

Why would that be lame? Are you completely helpless or something? Why would a game developer do squat just because NVIDIA says it would be cool? To get a company to spend the extra money developing/testing this tech, they need to know that it's going to sell enough games in the long run to bring that money back plus a profit. Unless NVIDIA is willing to actually pay them to put the technology in, about all they can do is say how many units they have sold. That's rather weak evidence. Who knows what kinds of games those customers are playing?

If they actually see people talking about S3D and hoping for the game to use it in thier own forums, though, that's another matter. People making these games are largely gamers themselves, too, so talking about S3D games in any gaming forum can be a positive. Of course, they aren't stupid. If they see a new thread begging for S3D followed by three other posts from users who have never posted before and make the same spelling/capitalization errors that you make, it isn't going to make a positive impression. Just go out there and don't be shy about how much S3D means to you and you'll be good.

Sites like SolutionGaming or Bloody's list of upcoming games are bound to help, too. Heck, just posting screenshots in side-by-side format can help, particularly if a long time poster pops in to say the shot has great pop out.

Not that NVIDIA is completely helpless, either. They can ease the cost of development by handing the developers free monitors and glasses they can use to test their games with. They can improve how the drivers work with DirectX, too, to make it easier for developers to get things working. They would probably be the main folks to work over... ahem... to work with Microsoft to try and get them to put better 3D support into the DirectX API as well.
