State of 3D Vision and performance with RTX 2080 Ti
  1 / 2
Hello Guys I just got my RTX 2080 Ti yesterday. We've all seen the 2D performance benchmarks for this GPU through various reviews, so I won't bore you with how good it is in 2D. However, I must confess that being used to 3D Vision for a while now, I was mostly looking forward to the 3D performance of this GPU. Here are my observations so far on a small subset of recent games that work well with 3D Vision but lacked performance with older generation cards, especially on 1440p 3D Vision monitors such as the Asus PG278QR or Dell S2716DG. Please note that this is not any kind of review. It's merely some observations I had with about 4-6 hours of running games since I got this card. My major system specs for reference is given below: CPU: i7 8700K @ 4.7 GHz all cores Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z370E-Gaming RAM: 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) G.Skill, 3200 MHz, CL16 GPU: MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio OS: Windows 10 build 17134 Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG278QR Nvidia Driver: Tested with 411.70 and 416.16 (See notes in each game) Steroescopic 3D turned on in NV control panel for all games (obviously ;) ) Witcher 3 (with 3D vision fix for this game through HelixMod): Settings: Everything on Ultra except Hairworks AA which is set to 2x, AA off, Motion Blur off, DOF off, VSync on. Nvidia Driver 411.70: Constant 60 FPS in most regions, with some dips to 50s in heavy forest regions in Velen/Skellige/Toussaint. Some initial stuttering on game startup for the first 20-30 seconds, then it's pretty smooth. Dropping shadows to High or Medium results in 60 FPS in almost all regions including the heavy forests, with minimal dips to 50s in some rare cases. Game looks just as good with Medium shadows as Ultra (I honestly can't tell much of a difference). Nvidia Driver 416.16: Same performance as previous driver, BUT every now and then there are annoying artifacts appearing in one of the eyes randomly. This is a total immersion breaker and extremely distracting. EDIT: Nvidia Driver 417.01: The artifacts and flickering is now fixed! This was actually fixed 416.81. Turning it off removes this flickering. As a side note, there was no flickering with my older 2 x GTX 1080 setup with AO turned on. Let me know if you guys have any good workarounds or solution for this. I've been trying to get this fixed through RTSS by messing around with Scanline Sync, but haven't had much luck so far. Please note that this is not any kind of review. It's merely some observations I had with about 4-6 hours of running games since I got this card.

My major system specs for reference is given below:
CPU: i7 8700K @ 4.7 GHz all cores
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z370E-Gaming
RAM: 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) G.Skill, 3200 MHz, CL16
GPU: MSI RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio
OS: Windows 10 build 17134
Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG278QR
Nvidia Driver: Tested with 411.70 and 416.16 (See notes in each game)
Steroescopic 3D turned on in NV control panel for all games (obviously ;) )

Witcher 3 (with 3D vision fix for this game through HelixMod):
Settings: Everything on Ultra except Hairworks AA which is set to 2x, AA off, Motion Blur off, DOF off, VSync on.

Nvidia Driver 411.70:
Constant 60 FPS in most regions, with some dips to 50s in heavy forest regions in Velen/Skellige/Toussaint.

Nvidia Driver 416.16:
Same performance as previous driver, BUT every now and then there are annoying artifacts appearing in one of the eyes randomly. This is a total immersion breaker and extremely distracting.

EDIT: Nvidia Driver 417.01:
The artifacts and flickering is now fixed! This was actually fixed 416.81. Seems like the issue was there in 2D as well.

Rise of the Tomb Raider:
Settings: Everything on Ultra, DOF off, VSync on

Nvidia Driver 411.70:
DX 11 Exclusive fullscreen:
Game runs all right with 60 FPS in most regions, BUT there's massive flickering with Ambient Occlusion turned on. Turning it off removes this flickering.
As a side note, there was no flickering with my older 2 x GTX 1080 setup with AO turned on.
There are some rendering bottlenecks in some regions of the game such as Geothermal Valley and Lost City and consequent drops in FPS to 40s. GPU usage is around 50-60% in these scenarios.

DX 12 non-exclusive fullscreen:
Game runs extremely well with 60 FPS literally everywhere, no bottlenecks in any rendering. However, there's the occasional stutter for nearly a whole second and this is due to VSync.
Since we cannot turn off VSync in 3D Vision, this is something we have to live with I guess. Let me know if you guys have any good workarounds or solution for this.
I've been trying to get this fixed through RTSS by messing around with Scanline Sync, but haven't had much luck so far.

Nvidia Driver 416.16:
DX 11 Exclusive fullscreen:
Same as other driver, BUT same artifact problem as in Witcher 3. This driver seems to have issues with older DX11 games in 3D Vision.

DX 12 non-exclusive fullscreen:
Crash on startup in menu :(

EDIT: Nvidia Driver 417.01:
DX 11 Exclusive fullscreen:
The artifacts and flickering is now fixed with Ambient Occlusion turned on!

DX 12 non-exclusive fullscreen:
Same as 411.70.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider:
Settings: Everything on Ultra, DOF off, VSync on, DX11 Exclusive fullscreen

416.16 and 411.70 driver:
60 FPS in most regions, except Kuwaq Yaku and Hidden City where there's a rendering bottleneck resulting in roughly just 50% GPU usage and FPS drops to the 30s.
This was the same with my previous 2 x GTX 1080 setup, so no surprises there. The game doesn't run very well in DX11 in general (2D or 3D).
Unfortunately, 3D Vision doesn't work in DX12 at all and crashes on startup.
DX12 2D is almost flawless.

EDIT: Nvidia Driver 417.01:
DX 11 Exclusive fullscreen:
Same performance as previous drivers

DX 12 Non-Exclusive fullscreen
Game starts up but left/right images are way out of whack and isn't playable.

Batman Arkham Knight (with latest 3D Vision fix through HelixMod):
Settings: Everything on Ultra, Enhanced Light Shafts off, VSync on

Either driver:
Game runs all right with 60 FPS in most regions, with some stuttering that is inherent with this game (both in 2D and 3D and even across my older GPUs).
Overall, very playable if you can ignore the stutters :)

Most issues have now been fixed with 417.01.

Got mine coming (hopefully) next week and am looking forward to running things at full res with this card! When you get a chance can you try the new 416.34 drivers to see if that fixes the artifacting?

@iDavros, just tried with driver 416.34 and the flickering still exists. Looking at the patch notes, the only generic fixes are: - Games launch to a black screen when DSR is enabled. - Some games produce red/green/blue shimmering line when played in full-screen. For now, it's better to stick to 411.70 especially if you are planning to (re)play Witcher 3 ;)

OP, congrats on the new card. Have you played Skyrim with it by any chance? I have a 1080 Ti and iirc it could have been better in 1440p 3D. I am deliding my 8700k and going directly on the die. And adding watercooling. System has been down for awhile now so cant give comparison yet.

I'd be interested in seeing how Borderlands 2 fares in 3D. With the 1080GTX, I noticed particularly low FPS in 3D with that game, even though it constantly stays over 70-80 FPS at 4K w/ max settings. I know the 1080GTX is good at handling high resolutions... does the 2080 actually deliver equal FPS at lower resolutions? I'd have expected to get 150-200 FPS easily at 1080p since it was putting out constant 70-80 FPS at 4K, but on my rig in 3D it barely goes over 30-40 in 3D (at 1080p)

Try an older driver with borderlands two I used to play it in 3dvision in surround 3d, it was one of the few games I could justify playing that way due to performance reasons. I tried it again recently and noticed the performance was way worse.

Borderlands 2 was buttery smooth on a GTX570 SLI setup in 3D. I'd guess around 100fps going by memory. At least in the open areas in the beginning which are pretty sparse visually. I had to stop playing there since i had the 3D issue with the big guns which im going to try and learn to fix when i have time. A 1080 GTX is about 3x faster than single 570 GTX. Should be smooth for you i would think.

Yeah overall the 1080GTX seems to do extremely well in 4K, but then when I lower it to 1080P its about the same or only maybe 20-30 FPS higher even though its 1/4th the resolution ... which of course is not good for 3d. Hoping to find out if its the same with the 2080s or if things are any different.

With the new RTXs, playing in 3D is achieved with the DisplayPort / DVI adapter, not?

I believe he is asking if any of you with a RTX card can confirm that the included dvi adapter works at 1920x1080P@120Hz. I'm inclined to say that it's a passive adapter and not capable of the needed bandwidth. He asked a similar question in a thread he made https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1073284/

I know vsync is not generally required for nvidia 3d vision (if it was, I would probably have never gotten into 3D Vision). Scanline Sync could be huge since I don't use VSync for racing games due to input lag and some racing games tear even when framerate locked to 60 fps/eye.

Playing 3d or to be frank even 2D without vsynch is a horrible experience,Though i believe its not same for Everyone. Some people Are not bothered from Active 3d some not from rbe on 1-chip dlp. We all propably have specific Things need To be spot on. It kind of funny how you don’t miss Something you never exposed to for a very long time.I for example tested once Desktop on 120hz and Yeah it Was a difference to a 60 but i haveNot ever missed that. Maby i Was not using it long enough or it Was just not that important to me. And on the other hand i only game 3d so we ain’t getting that no matter what Atleast currently,And At the same time it would not even matter as the refresh would go from 60 to 120 we all know How hard its already to get any AAA title to Work solid 60fps in 3d so getting them run solid 120fps would become just a dream
