GLDirect and NVIDIA 3D Vision
  1 / 3
Hi all.

I'm SiO2 - the developer of all versions of GLDirect 1.x to 5.x - and I'm very pleased that the utility is helping get at least some OpenGL games to work with nVidia 3D Vision.

The current version of GLDirect does not support programmable shaders which is probably the main reason why it doesn't run games such as Doom3. Certain OpenGL games may also require specific OpenGL extensions that GLDirect does not currently support.

I'm planning a version of GLDirect that has enhanced OpenGL support. I think I'll start with taking a look at "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" as I guess it would be very cool in 3D.

Alas, I am completely new to NVIDIA 3D Vision so I lack the 3D glasses and 120Hz monitor (though I have a GTX580, so the graphics card requirement is well covered). I'd imagine that, to begin with, if I could get an OpenGL app such as Amnesia to run through GLDirect under non-stereo conditions then it would automatically have a high chance of working with 3D vision, though that kind of development is far from ideal as I'd be unable to debug people's 3D problems. Perhaps I should ask Nvidia to supply me with some 3D glasses and monitor or ask for donations to my GLDirect SourceForge page. /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Holy crap. Somebody buy this guy a set of glasses and a 120hz monitor, stat!

And SiO2 - thank you so much for your hard work on this project. I'm frigging lost without it - Anachronox won't run without it (not to mention it's perfect in 3d!), SiN 1/wages of Sin in 3d, doom in 3d... goddamn. Quake 3 in 3d! Seriously, thanks again.

Hey dude! I just want to say that I've really enjoyed Gldirect so far! It's been great running old ID classics in 3d vision. If you really are planning on continuing your work and planning to get newer OGL games to work, I just want to say thats great! And a big THANK YOU for your work on GLdirect!

Awesome! Not exactly sure if Nvidia will give freebies to someone working around the Quadro-card & OpenGL system lock
they have in place. But I sure would love to have another go at Amnesia or even Quake Wars: Enemy territory.

I know nothing about the opengl->directx process but if you were to get knights of the old republic to work in 3d I'd <3 you forever.

I know some people have defective monitor (like a portion of screen is bugged) maybe we can get one of them to give.

Hello.
Thank you for your work, I'd love to be able to play Doom3 again.
If you can't afford 3D vision, the simplest thing you can do is try to grab (or buy) simple anaglyph glasses (the red/cyan kind) and then use NVidia 3D vision discover mode : it uses the same algorithms than the full 3D vision, except that is displays for red/cyan glasses when you do not have a 3D vision compatible display+glasses.
It won't be as good quality as the real 3D vision and it has a tendency to give headaches quickly, however it does give the same depth perception, and uses the exact same images as 3Dvision, so whatever bug would occur with 3D vision will also be visible with the anaglyph system.

Hi SiO2,
Thanks for coming to the Nvidia 3D Vision forum and responding to my prompt over on your forum. :)

The easiest way that I see for you to get support from this community is to do a couple of things:

1) Obtain a pair of 3D Vision Discover glasses. I find that Nvidia's Anaglyph 3D Vision Discovery glasses to be of the correct color for 3D vision Disocover. I've tried other different anaglyph pairs, and the color seems to be a little bit off. You can obtain these Nvidia Discover 3D glasses off of Ebay for like ~$2.00 (US currency). This will give you a starting point until you have the funds to obtain the full 3D Vision kit and a 3D display. If you can get Doom 3/Amnesia or any other advanced OpenGL games working with 3D Vision Discover it will de facto work with 3D Vision. They are the same software.

2) Set up a paypal donation on the GLDirect site. I would donate to the project, and I'm willing to bet others here would as well. This community has been dying to have OpenGL support for 3D Vision but this has not been apart of Nvidia's roadmap and doesn't appear to be so far. The best that someone can do here to play Doom3 or some of the other more advanced OpenGL games in 3D is to build an old school rig with a 7 or 6 series Nvidia card and Nvidia Forceware/Stereo 91.xx series drivers. Though there are some limitations to that method as that driver won't even play Amnesia in 2D, not to mention that Nvidia's 3D Vision is a little more robust than the older stereo method. Though the old stereo method in some ways were more flexible, it does have it's own set of quirks.

3) I will be happy to do any testing for you and give you feedback. Once you start getting some beta's going, you will see the Nvidia 3D Vision community respond accordingly.

4) Keep in touch.

Congrats on what you have provided so far, it resurrects alot of the old Quake engine games to be played on modern graphics cards with the industries best and most robust 3D solution.

Awesome news!
Until next gldirect version everybody has been bound to use ancient equipment to play d3, q4, prey etc in 3d. All softwares that improves backward compability are greatly appreciated! I'd be happy to test new gldirect with iz3d as well as tridef drivers if you're willing to support those as well (they should more or less automatically work depending on hooking methods). I also agree on everything Photios says and would like to contribute in the ways i can.

What do you mean No Anaglyph? If it works with 3D vision discover, it works for 3D Vision, and if it works there with those it'll work with iZ3D and TriDef too more than likely. All he needs to do, more or less, is get the conversion from OpenGL to Directx soundly and the 3D driver will take care of the rest, just like it does with GLdirect 5.02. Tweaking profiles for specific 3D application can be done later.

Well, but just for some development-testing the Red/Cyan-Glasses will do the job. Between 1 or 3 €'s you won't get a cheaper 3D-Solution.
Needless to say, that with an Nvidia-Card you allready have access to the Nvidia-3D-Vision-Discover mode.

I'd very much love to see OpenGL supported somehow in 3D. I was devastated to find out Nvidia's own tech demos didn't work in stereo 3d (Adrianne Curry, Nalu, Dusk, Dawn w/ nude patch hehe). So please, someone get those demos to work, I'm dying to see them in 3D.

@SiO2: I will actually send you a free pair of anaglyph (red/cyan) glasses. You can use these to test with Nvidia 3D Discover mode which is a different output for the same driver (so if it works with the paper glasses it will work with 3D Vision glasses). Also, if you set up a PayPal donation system I will send you like $10-20 for the cause and encourage other people to do the same. If you want the free glasses just PM with your name/address and I will ship them right out (I ship worldwide, don't worry).
