Samsung 8 Series Plasma vs Panasonic VT25 I had both in one day!
  3 / 4
Well if your happy with it that's all that counts eh!

However, there is ghosting and ghosting drives me crazy. Tonight I fired up my viewsonic 3D dlp and played Just Cause 2, and was quickly reminded that dlp is by far the king of 3D. I cranked up the contrast as far as possible and could not get any ghosting to show, no matter how hard I tried. Mind you I'm out of luck for ps3 but I don't mind. I'll see what TVs come down the road.

As for me I can't recommend these tvs for gaming, I'd say get a dlp projector, but if I had to choose one I'd say the samsung for price and features as the ghosting is only slightly worse on the Sammy. But that said, it's very noticeable ghosting on both.
Well I guess it depends on what I'm looking at in 3D as to how bad the ghosting is. From what I can tell, the source is largely responsible for how much ghosting you see. For example MotorStorm 3D has just ridiculous ghosting for me, but then something like Super Stardust HD 3D looks perfect. Avatar the Game on PC is just amazing and while the default settings gave me some ghosting, I managed to tweak the settings in-game so that I had none - the game is simply breathtaking in 3D. I don't have a 3D Bluray player yet (waiting for the PS3 firmware upgrade) but Monsters Inc playing in the store looked great, but I'll reserve judgment for now.

So yeah, I'm super pumped to get hold of the 3D play software to test more but so far, I have seen the Sammy pull off flawless 3D - and personally, I think the Sammy's glasses are far better than the nVidia glasses. I have one of the new Acer 23.7" screens for the PC and I think the 3D from the Sammy is leagues ahead when I compare in Avatar. Friggin great TV.

Yes your correct my review is very lacking (Id would love to be able to buy all sorts of equipment and review it for you, but I couldnt risk not being able to return the TV)

I really hope your right about plasmas offering a perfect ghost free experience, but I doubt this is the case. Even after a 100 hours, as Ive seen demos in stores that run 24/7 and they still ghost (at least on bluray - no ps3 demo)

Im dissapointed that it didnt work out for me as the wife gave me permission to get a 3DTV but I returned it based on what I saw. I figured if im investing 3000 in a TV it better be perfect for what I want. And it just wasnt. The money can be better invested elsewhere.

I think I can agree some sources ghost more than others, but why I dont know. But seeing the difference between Motorstorm and SuperStardust (especially since superstardust is on a black BG with bright colors, and Motorstorm is kind of balanced in color) does seem to point that out. Id love to write up a better review but obviously without the means of extensive testing (no 3DTV play released, very little Ps3 content - and now no TV) im afraid I cant offer much other than my initial experience, which you know wasnt great.

I'm also a perfectionist when it comes to 3D. Why would I go back to a source for 3D that ghosts, when I can fire up my 3D DLP projector and get perfect 3D? I hope this TV works out for anyone who buys it, but time will tell and I hope Im wrong for the sake of all the people on these forums that did buy one. For me as well. Ill now be depending on others long term experience to make my purchase decision.

Take my experience for what it is. I bought the TV, hooked it up to the PS3 and it showed unacceptable ghosting, even when I played with every menu setting (this occurred for both the samsung and the panasonic) . I dont know where you heard about this 100 hour break in period which reduces ghosting, can you post a link to that source?

Im not spending hard earned money for a less than perfect 3D experience. Period.

Not to mention, I cant even use my 2 pairs of Nvidia glasses with either TV? Thats also pretty lame.

Hopefully you will tell us all about your experience with this TV , Ill be looking forward to hearing about your thoughts.

If someone can prove to me that the Samsung plasma has zero ghosting on 3DTV play, Ill be running straight back to the store to pick it up again.

Its a really cool TV, I liked it better than the Panasonic.

But I have a feeling Ill be right in the end.

"Do any research on these plasma tvs and you will see they are some of the best tvs around for this price range."

Trust me I did all the research I could. The panasonic VT25 IS the best consumer level 3D TV yet. Apparently. Anyways, let us know what you think.

Hi Damien,

I do not have the TV yet. I do not believe that the plasma will have ZERO ghosting after the break in period, but from what I have read it is significantly reduced. All of my information regarding the break in process comes from the AVS forums.

For 3000 dollars I too would expect a ghost free experience. However, I only payed $1829 for my 58' samsung PNC587000 with 3D blue ray player and 3D glasses included. No tax and free shipping. TV comes tomorrow. I am eager to test it out.

Hey, that link you sent is talking about phosphor trailing, not really talking about crosstalk (however phosphor trailing/decay must be adding to the problem).

However, the consensus Im getting from these forums is that both sets suffer from limited crosstalk, with the panasonic coming out on top. Also, as its been said, some content creates more than others. Looks like a bunch of factors are adding up here. I hope they can resolve this.

When I first got a Viewsonic projector, it suffered from bad ghosting. Then I got a newer model and voila, all gone. However, DLP is typically ghost free, and I believe the older projector had something off with it. Probably has a lot to do with Nvidia driver updates as well.

My suggestion to anyone in the market now is to wait on the next series and see if crosstalk can be completely resolved. Or, take the chance on a potential firmware update helping out.

Again, SuperStardust HD looked great with barely noticeable crosstalk (this is probably due to the convergence levels), and even the store demo for Panasonic was very impressive. But playing Motorstorm showed some pretty bad ghosting, which scared me off of these TVs. Perhaps I was too hasty in returning the TV, I did have 15 days, but I didnt want to risk something happening to the TV and me not being able to return it.

As far as a 2D set goes, the samsung is superior for all around value and added functionality, but it is said the Panasonic has the better picture quality in both 2D and 3D.

Make your choice wisely.
