It looks to me like you're right, nVidia staff are in the "Administrator" group AFAIK. Thanks for the tip. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Interesting hypothesis. Is there any way to get word from an official channel? An inside source maybe...

Sorry, no "hypothesis". I banned that user for impersonating a nVidia Admin to spread FUD.

As noted, nVidia staff are in the "Admin" group, and I have no power to ban them.

I emailed this hoax to nV management, they agreed with my decision.

Thanks Brian, I reported his post to Ronin this morning, I was thinking it looked fishy. Please let us know if you hear anything concerning the future of the Stereo driver. We are the most loyal customers because ATI does not have a 3D driver. The day NVIDIA stops supporting 3D will be a dark day indeed. I guess we can put the pitchforks and torches away for now boys.

I'm so very glad that this turned out to be a bad joke and not the truth.
sigh...

Back to topic:

That is really sad. The stereo-driver was the only reason for me to buy a nvidia card, sually it would have been ATI without this benefit.Consequence is that I will stick to my current card & XP as long as possible, especially as I've taken hundreds (if not thousands by now) stereo jps pictures. If I want to play 2D games on my projector, I can buy a console later (Wee offers some innovation at least, not only cheer pixel / frame rate counts).

Since I have played one game in 3D, I even prefer them over visually superior games (btw. check out Tomb Raider Legend, it has perfect 3D).

Strange move by the nvidia management. I have thought as 3D is a growing topic in the entertainment industry (Disney 3D, George Lucas is announcing Star Wars 3d,...) - I have thought nvidia would build on their already existing knowledge and expand their portfolio to Blu-Ray / HD DVD 3D support in the future.

There will be other companies that will take this chance, so to me it is just a farewell to nvidia.

Actually, I think stereo 3d is NOT a growing topic. stereoscopy is a technology known for more than a hundred years. Andy Warhol filmed a 3d erotic movie back in 1973, and even in gaming it is around for many years. However, for some strange reason most people don't seem to get hooked on it. I don't know why.

I evangelized the nvidia stereo driver among my friends and gave a free pair of (cyan-red) anaglyph glasses to anyone who agreed to try them. However, a few month down the road, none of them continued to use them (I my self additionally use an edimensional shutter glass pair, depending on my mood - I am partially color blind so I am not as affected by the anaglyph color distortions).

Maybe the technology isn't ready yet. I don't know.
For me its a mystery how stereo 3d gaming does not become viral.
All I know that playing Mafia and OFP in stereo blew my mind forever.

We seem to be a little fraction of the gamers community.
I also buy nVidia cards for this reason only, in the last 4 years.

I think our only hope is if stereoscopy finds its way into the DX standard.

ehh... I think Nvidia has dropped the ball, and look forward to see who picks it up. Their heart was never really in it (did any of the involved coders ever contact the community???). Nvidia will kick themselves one day for dropping us to the wayside.

edit- guess I should have read the thread before posting. my apologies, and prayers for continued support.

Here's what nVidia replied to my question about this issue:

[quote]Some gamers on the nvidia.com forums have asked when the GeForce 8800 will support stereoscopic glasses.

Our engineering team expects to offer 3D stereo drivers for GeForce 8800 by spring 2007.

NVIDIA currently provides 3D stereo support for GeForce 7, 6, and FX series GPUs and NVDIA SLI for GeForce 6 and 7 series. Those users can download the 3D stereo driver for Windows XP/2000 at the link below:

Excellent news. Thanks Brian. Some might find the time line slow, but look at it this way. Support for the new GPU could indicate continued and long term support for 3D gaming from NVIDIA. Besides I've been 3D gaming for 5 years and I'm getting accustom to the driver lag. Next, let's hope that DX10 and 3D gaming play nice together.
And thanks to NVIDIA, without you it would be a very flat 2D world. :)

It's good to know that Nvidia haven't forgotten about us and that there is some administrative representation on Nvidia's part when fake rumors are being started, but I hope and I think that I'm speaking on behalf of everyone here on the stereo forum that we will start getting some real support, tips for running games in stereo from the source - Nvidia's ingeneering or support team.
