Future of 3D Vision Support (Official announcement from NVIDIA)

Resolution, ips vs tn, surround, ultrawidescreen widescreen, framerate - all of these are subservient to 3d in terms of gaming immersion. I just cannot go back to 2d gaming. I will probably stop gaming altogether if 3d gaming dies.
Maybe the only hope may be glasses free tv's in the future.

I'm seeing a lot of people saying the only reason they still buy Nvidia is 3D Vision. But from a price/performance standpoint, they're the best in most market segments. So unless you plan to quit gaming, this probably isn't going to impact their bottom line in any significant way.

They could release the source code of 3D VISION.
Anyway, let's go all-or-nothing with upcoming Holographic 3D screens from Ultra-D and Leia.
And also the upcoming 3D monitor from MOPIC.
We saw the writing on the wall a long time ago, and even with nvidia support, it would have died another death as performance was tanking as games became more CPU intensive... it was only a matter of time.
To be fair, 3DV, although extremely impressive for a small number of fully supported games, was a disaster for most games and gamers without people such as DSS, bo3b, and Helifax.
As the saying goes, the Chinese symbols for Crises are comprised of the symbol for Danger, and the symbol for Opportunity...
Let's be pragmatic:
VorpX, ELSA, H3D, Zalman, iZ3D, DDD, eDimensional, et al, all had Stereo drivers without using nVidia's 3DV. iZ3D had the best drivers which were renowned for their performance and compatibility.
nVidia isn't the be all and end all of StereoScopic 3D - even their 3DV tech was actually based on ELSA's Stereo3D driver.
I have no doubt that high calibre people such as DSS, bo3b, Helifax, and others, can indeed make better drivers than nVidia's, both in terms of performance, and of course compatibility.
The crux of the issue would be how to compensate them over a prolonged development period, as well as support. I am sad to say that the majority of the above companies are now defunct because they could not adequately monetise their software. If the business model is going to be similar, then I don't think our dear friends will survive for long.
Perhaps what might work is a constantly renewing license based method - Users effectively lease their 3DV driver, which guarantees the developers a constant stream of income. Maybe the license expires every month...
We could also use a "pay as you go" model that has some kind of timer - the more one uses the software, the more one is asked to pay before being allowed to use it... example: 50 cents per 24 hours of in-game play...
Generally, there is a 90-9-1 rule for Participation Inequality in Online Communities:
https://www.nngroup.com/articles/participation-inequality/
This means that for every poster here, there are 9 lurkers who do not contribute in the form of help, discussion, nor donations. I am sad to say that, as per the rule, most people only take without giving anything.
It would be an idea to try and monetise everyone, not just the usual amazing contributors and donators, who might have to bear the entire burden or any Kickstarter / Patreon otherwise...
And of course, Piracy of the proposed driver will also have to be accounted for in some fashion...

For me... I have been gaming since before the Atari 2600 and Apple II. I have owned virtually everything and been in the video game industry for over 25 years. If it wasn't for 3D, there are very few games that I would bother playing these days - everything has become so repetitive and same-y... including VR. I might be alone on this, but I would much rather play a game in S3D on my 27" monitor than anything I have played/seen on PSVR or Oculus. And, is the future of VR technology really any brighter than S3D? The sales #'s would answer "no."
I would be willing to contribute anything I can toward solutions that keep our small but dedicated community chugging along. But, if that ends up not being possible/realistic, I can honestly say that I will never purchase another video card, nor will I go beyond my current driver. And, with the exception of the occasional "God of War," or some other "can't miss" console game, that will be the end of the road for my almost life-long hobby.
The good news? We have so many great games available to us that I have barely scratched the surface on... and so many franchises that I love coming back to. So, as long as my hardware doesn't go south on me (I have a backup emitter and glasses for when that day comes... should probably invest in one more GPU :), I can keep playing the oldies! :)

Going forward, Bo3b and I have been talking about the possibility of writing a replacement for the 3D Vision driver. As it turns out, we already have quite a lot of pieces in place that we need to do this, but there is still plenty of work left do to.
You both will have my support and will help with the money I can. I will use my website to spread the word and help collecting money.

Really sad news. I lost interest in 2D gaming since I started using 3D Vision. VR is unfortunately not my thing due to some kind of motion sickness that it causes. I've been buying high end Nvidia cards, but if 3D Vision won't be possible on future series, I definitely won't buy them. When the current cards that still support 3D Vision are no longer available anywhere, I'll just stick with the integrated Intel GPU. I hope that day won't come too soon though.
I'm definitely willing to donate for the 3D driver replacement project that DSS mentioned.

Let's say everything works so well for Bo3b and DSS that they bring us a new and perfect driver, "yesterday"...
Our HARDWARE will not work forever. What if our pyramid or glasses will break?

For a number of years the mega-corporation I work for allowed the employees to work from home whenever convenient, as long as we continue to perform as expected. In a recent announcement, the new CEO decreed that all work-from-home contracts are to be terminated. Something that goes against industry trend, proven efficiency, environmental footprint, etc.
You cannot possible imagine the impacts this little change has caused among all of us (going from the extreme where people bought houses in the countryside thinking they will avoid a commute, to people who had to buy a PC and furniture to arrange for a working office at home. Personally I will have less time to spend with my family and to do my workout routine consistently, which will affect my health).
And now, immediately after this news, to see this post about the sunset of 3D Vision ...
I'm not sure I can take this...
PC gaming has been in my and my wife's lives since inception. It's practically my only serious hobby.
Over the years, with the consolidation of games as business, and the mandatory prototyping of all game development on "trends" to guarantee profits, gaming has become more and more shallow, with no innovation and inventivity whatsoever gameplay wise. YOu basically have a choice between pixel art with some innovation or visually impressive games without any gameplay. I cannot play multiplayer games with any pleasure whatsoever, and it's gotten worse now with only one particular type of "multi-playing" being in favour: battle royale.
So without 3D vision to make games more impressive, I would barely have any reason to game at all...
I would write more, but I'm so shaken that I can barely put my thoughts in order. Like other comments here, I should say "time for another hobby", but I don't think it's so simple.

After removing the 3D Vision driver from Quadro cards I surely knew that it was the next logical step that Nvidia would do the same for Geforce drivers. But my guess was that they wait 1-2 years until 3D Vision monitors vanish from the market. I'm pretty sure Asus, Acer, Dell & Co had to pay enough money for the 3D Vision licenses. So now the weird situation is that manufacturers still sell 3D Vision monitors which do not have support for 3D any more due to the lack of drivers. That's a bit rude from Nvidia.
I can understand their reason why they want to burry 3D. There are 7,5 billion people living on this planet and only <1000 people still using 3D Vision. Actually it was a wonder that Nvidia supported it till today. But as said I expected the funeral 2020 or 2021.
I hope 3D can remain alive with a self-made stereoscopic 3D driver. But I don't expect that a kickstarter project would throw enough money as nearly nobody is interested in 3D any more. The "cool" things these days are HDR, 4K... for the majority of people.

At least I surely wouldn't expect that there are more than 2000 people left. I guess this number based on the user number of 3D Fix Manager which is around 700. Probably DSS / Bo3b have more reliable numbers by tracking the count of people visiting helixmod.blogspot.com. I also don't assume that people still use 3D Vision without using 3D fixes from this community (there are just too few 3D Vision Ready games).

Another thing that comes to my mind:
Most 3D Vision users won't get to know that the 3D Vision driver isn't included any more until they update their graphics driver. Only few users know who visit Geforce forum regularily. So most people will wonder why 3D Vision doesn't work any more after updating the graphics driver. I guess in Geforce Experience we will just see that the next graphics drivers supports 3 new AAA games but the info that 3D Vision is not included any more is not found so easily ;).

For example I don't use 3D Fix Manager because I prefer to do everything manually to get a better understanding how things work underneath. I know that my friend who has 3D Vision also doesn't use it. I appreciate your effort with it and absolutely don't have anything against it, but I think overall it's just not as well known as helixmod fixes. And even people who know about it like me not always use it.
