Hi All,
I have been reading up and searching for information on 3D Vision and HDTVs but finding anything solid on what works and how is quite hard. I am going to buy a Samsung Series 8 UN/UA/UE65ES8000 tv and I am hoping that i can run 3D games on the display as well as 3D movies via the PC (not bluray)
Firstly is this possible with the Sammy? i notice that the supported HDTV list mentions the UE55ES8000 so i am assuming thats a yes.

Hi betc, firstly as long as your TV is listed it will work with 3DTV play and it is fairly easy to set up. You will have to use the glasses that come with the TV and the 3D Vision kit isn't required but you will need to pay a licence to Nvidia to activate it which is, I think, £30. (If you had the 3D vision kit it would be free. The downside of using a TV with HDMI 1.4, though, is it will either run at 24 htz (per eye) in 1080P or 30 htz in 720P. Obviously using a 120 htz monitor you can run at 60 htz per eye but on a smaller screen. You would have to decide what is more important for you, size of screen over fluidity of gameplay. Personally I'd go for FPS everytime hence I am happy with my 23" Sammy monitor.
As for watching 3D films, no problem if you're streaming them off your PC as far as I know. (I can't play them on my PC BluRay cos Nvidia don't support my monitor for BluRays for some reason!)

1080p/24hz=24fps or 720p/60hz=60fps or 1080p60hz=60fps checkerboard 3d;) with a hdmi 1.4 3dtv ( only a few tv's support checkerboard.
The tv will double up your hz at 60hz, so 60fps turns into a simulated 120fps with the glasses on, extremely smooth with what looks tobe a zero pixel response time, this zero pixel response time effect only works with active glasses and 60fps.
The sammy has some serious pq but is very bad for 3d gaming as it's 3d modes create alot of input lag compared to 2d.
I had the 46 and 55es8000 ;).
In 3d there is virtually zero ghosting/blur on panning shoits with 60hz gaming content, it is very good but not good for gaming.
It has around 50/70ms of input lag when in a 3d mode.
There's only a few ways to get zero added input lag in 3d and that's with a 120hz projector or monitor, or a interleaved passive 3dtv or monitor.
You'd be able to use the new " Hdmi Checkerboard " 3d option in 3dtvplay, this would give you an extremely good looking 3d image but at the cost off loads of 3d input lag.
Every 3dtv has input lag in 3d that is much more than 2d so you have been warned, i've not found a tv in teh last 2 years that can play 3d games without input lag unless its a passive with a hack to acheive 1080p/60hz=60fps in 3d ;) with the smae input lag as 2d.
As the se8000 is so expensive i'd suggest taking your pc to the local shop and testing it for 3d input lag.

Yeah checkerboard is now a 3d option in the new beta drivers, made me really want to get a es8000 again b as it really was the sharpest ect 3d gaming image i've ever seen, simply amazing. Input lag is'nt to bad if you live with it, but coming from something with less input lag sucks.

i strongly suggest to u that you should wait for coulbe of years for a FULL HD 3D to step in into 3DDHTV market/scene. Tha case is that i just wasted (one year ago) 2500€ for 55" LG's top model with passiwe 3D. Yeah the picture is not flickering and with some pro procture calibration you can get an realy good 3DHDTV picture (also my eyes do not feel tired after couple of hours of 3D playing). But as sadly as this reality is, currently u'll end up with 720p/60Hz 3D playble mode that you could play games title without any major input lag and ghosting. As an comparison i have the 3D Vision 2 Asus VH278H FULL HD 3D monitor hooked up and i have to say that the picture quality difference is HUGE !!! After some testing i'm quite mad that market forced me to purchase an product without stating in big letters on LG SHIPPMENT BOX (HEY!! THAT TV WILL SUPPORT ONLY 1080p 3D mode in 24hz) if i only could found out this earlier i definately could have waited for couple of years for some new HDMI version to come in. Also nvidia's 3DTV play / 3D Vision still need some development and polishing to be able to support new Game products axactly on their launch date. (Just purchased MOHAW and it's not even start with 3D Vision / 3DTV play enabled). As an conclusion just purchase ASUS VG278H monitor and play games untill same picture quality will step in without flickering into the market.

@Richie72 - cheers for the licence info, i might as well pick it up then, in case i get a monitor one day. hoping that the setup will be simple :)
@mocca - The lag info is something i will look into, it would suck to be put off by this. maybe its just RTS and no online games. Awesome info on the sammy, at least i know what to expect and what not.
@Thug - i hear ya, it just feels like there is currently no proper 3D support in HDTV's. it says that i should just get a normal size TV and wait a few years for something better to come out and then slash out.

Maybe try a cheap 3d 120pj and be done with it.
Sadly in teh last 4 month i've gone through about £9,000 worth of 3dtv's, i was'nt happy with any of them as they all had too much input lag when in 3d, so that was the end of my active 3dtv gaming.
I did have a awsome tv once, infact i had 2 ( lg 47ld920 amnd 950 ), but since leaving those i never found anything that compares to the 3d gaming , these was interkleaved passive sets that play 3d games with 2d input lag with minumal pizel ghosting/trailing.
I got fed up in the ned with spending all my money to find my 3d image looked friggin amazing but with added 3d input lag
In the end i got a £470 benq w710st 120hz pj and won a second hand 80" fixed frame screen for £80, this setup totally trashes all the tv's i've had for 3d or 2d gaming as long as you can hit 120hz+ and films look amazing, i'll not be going back to a 3dtv for along time as i like the way active glasses work but do'nt like 3d input lag.
I hjas no ghosting at 120hz, well it does but only if you make the scene pan at a crazy speedm just slow to medium/fast pans i can still see all the detail in everything with zero blurring/ghosting, allso it's 3d crosstalk performance is out of this world, easily beats the best 3dtv out there and at a fraction of the cost.
The pj is 720p, i do'nt m,iss 1080p at all as on th 3dtv's there are too many issues, 720p from 5 metrs away looks sharp, sharper nthan you'd think.
As 2012 lcd 3dtv's have bad motion handling you'll see alot of ghosting/trailing in 2d or in 3d if you used a passive and the 60hz interleaved 3d mode, the only way the ghosting can be fixed is by activating Frame Interpolation which adds massive amounts of input lag.

Seems they do'nt make good use of the tricks of the trade and instead rely on Frame interpolation to fix the issue.
Towards the end i ask about the blurring/ghosting i see on newer tv's ;), sammy es8000 was terrible for this, 2d gaming looked like there was a after image following the first by about 3-6mm, the ld950 i had was about 1-3mm depending on speed of the moving image.
Rts would be ok, online games and the majority of single player games suffer, i could'nt do any car racing with the es8000, it simply would'nt drive due to around 50/80ms of input lag in 3d.
Not trying to scare you off your tv but it's alot of money for something that is'nt very good for 2d or 3d gaming but it is amazing for films as long as the Fi is turned on which smooths out the motion and clears the ghosting.
