Hardware Upgrade strictly for 3D Vision Gaming

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU and CPU and possibly purchase a ROG Swift for the 1440p 3D. Until some better VR tech progress comes along 1440p 3D will be my go to for PC gaming nothing less. Is it worth upgrading from my i5 2500k? Is my current CPU using 3D Vision mode to the fullest potential? Just how taxing is 1440p 3D?? As for GPU choices I'm looking at either 980ti,1080 or Pascal Titan. Not sure on the CPU yet... Maybe you guys can give me some advice on my next CPU or if I should even bother. If you go with cheap CPU and Titan then you gonna hate yourself. My choice would be 1080 with I7 6700K. With this you`ll be good for a long time.

Don't waste your money if upgrade is GTA 5 .
I had I7-4790K with Titan X Maxwell without any advanced options enable 40-43 FPS with 3D Vision at 1080P
I upgraded to I7-6700K with DDR4 and a GigaByte 1080 Extreme Gamer 44-48 FPS with 3D Vision at 1080P
same settings.

I can say on other games it is clear 40% increase or better.

GTA 5 is your main goal save your money

For 1440p in 3D, you want all the performance you can get. I say 1080 or Titan XP. The Titan XP is a lot more expensive for 30% more performance. Perhaps it's better to get the 1080 and just upgrade sooner. About the CPU, Kaby Lake Intel CPUs will come soon. Although you can buy the GPU for now and replace the CPU later. I have the Gainward Phoenix 1080 GLH. The most demanding games I have tried for now are The Witcher 3, Lords of the Fallen and Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition (who would have thought). My performance at 1440p. - The Witcher 3: with shadows and grass distance one step before maximum settings, and hairworks off, I usually get between 40 and 45 fps in 3D. Some zones in Hearts of Stone are somehow more demanding, and there I get barely above 30fps. At 1080p, I usually get 60fps, but it looks uglier. I sometimes play at 1440p and smetimes at 1080p. In Novigrad, I'm CPU limited with my i5 4670k at 4.3GHz. 37-50fps in most parts of the city. I need more power! If your goal is 30fps at 1440p, you can max all graphical effects, except maybe max antialiasing in hairworks. - Lords of the Fallen: I have to put shadows at medium and disable post processing to get 60fps most of the time. Sometimes barely by a bit, and in some zones with certain camera angles I get a bit over 50fps. With all graphical effects enabled, performance is noticeably worse. I prefer high resolution and fps in this case, instead of having to lower some of those two things to enable effects. Textures look amazing at this resolution in 3D (and use more than 6GB of VRAM). - Darksiders 2: GPU limited unless I disable ambient occlusion and lower shadows. Still very high GPU usage. However, this time I'm CPU limited at the first main hub. 40-45fps (in that zone my GPU wouldn't be enough for 60fps even if the CPU were). Obviously at 1080p the CPU problem is still there. That really is quite disappointing for someone with your hardware only running it in 1080p. I take it 1440p will axe it even lower FPS. OMG only couple FPS gained?
That really is quite disappointing for someone with your hardware only running it in 1080p.
I take it 1440p will axe it even lower FPS.

I play it right now with all MSAA and advanced options off with low grass and medium shadows.
I'm pretty happy with those settings now I just wanted more FPS.

With my current hardware setup i get between 38-45 FPS in GTAV.
Like mentioned before you would never know because gameplay is buttery smooth with such low FPS still.
All I do is install vehicle/scripts/map mods and drive around and take cool pics in 3D.

I have to agree GTA in 3D has lowest frame rates but is very playable. For a game that was developed 5 to 6 years ago remember it has support for direct x10 if this game came out in 2011 who could play it in 3D ?

@clammy Wonder if anyone here has attained higher FPS in GTAV 3D 60fps range I think whyme66 has a real kick ass system I know from the forums he just purchased a single titan x Pascal. Why don't PM him and ask him about GTA 5 performance in 3D .

I just bought a surround configuration of the rog swift 1440p. I'll call back in 20 years when there is hardware that can run it :P Looking at your predicament I would seriously consider a 1080p monitor otherwise you really are going to have to buy the best video card you can muster especially if you cannot go SLI Forget about cpu and ram upgrades you just aren't going to see enough of a performance gain for the time and hassle compared to a high end video card, unless your CPU is really really bad, I wouldn't eve consider it. 1080p to 1440p is a significant jump up in power required. I went from running all games in 3dvision at 60fps and max settings to have to start considering turning down some graphics options to achieve anything near 60fps again. I am currently holding off and seeing what the future brings before my next graphics upgrade.

I recently upgraded to a 1070, and overclocked my i5 4690k to 4.7Ghz. It runs everything pretty well in 3D/1080P, but I wouldn't expect it to perform at 1440p. To get good performance at 1440p in GTAV, you'd probably want a CPU at least on par with mine, overclocked to at least 4.5GHz, paired with two GTX 1080s. Even then, I wouldn't count on GTA running much better. It's a weird game in that regard, tricky to pin down exactly what bottlenecks it - but most people have some degree of performance woes with it.

If GTA5 is the metric, the only thing you can do is improve your CPU. It's CPU bound in all cases, including even on a projector at 720p. What really matters here is single core performance. There is a lot of talk about multiple cores and all, but at present we only have a small handful of games that actually use multiple cores. GTA5 does, but only in 2D. In 3D it's back to 2 cores max in use, so single-threaded performance is primary. I think that as a general rule for 3D, that everyone should definitely concentrate on single-threaded performance. The marketing swine always want to push cores to get you to buy new stuff, but as we've seen, it just doesn't make a difference. I'm also not at all sure that we are getting proper turbo out of the CPUs. I've tried a bunch of experiments with overclocking, and as far as I can tell Windows is too stupid to allow this to work properly. It dances around between cores, making your 4 core numbers the only thing that matters. The 2 core or 1 core turbo bins seem to never be active that I can tell. You can conceivably setup something with affinity, but there are so many trash threads and services in the background that this is going to be hard and sketchy. I think a good experiment to try might be to turn off a couple of cores, and overclock the remaining two higher than you normally can. That is probably the best you can do. That i5-2500K at 4.5Ghz is pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't think that any CPU upgrade is going to bring you any substantial improvement. If GTA5 is the metric, the only thing you can do is improve your CPU. It's CPU bound in all cases, including even on a projector at 720p.

What really matters here is single core performance. There is a lot of talk about multiple cores and all, but at present we only have a small handful of games that actually use multiple cores. GTA5 does, but only in 2D. In 3D it's back to 2 cores max in use, so single-threaded performance is primary.

I think that as a general rule for 3D, that everyone should definitely concentrate on single-threaded performance. The marketing swine always want to push cores to get you to buy new stuff, but as we've seen, it just doesn't make a difference.


I'm also not at all sure that we are getting proper turbo out of the CPUs. I've tried a bunch of experiments with overclocking, and as far as I can tell Windows is too stupid to allow this to work properly. It dances around between cores, making your 4 core numbers the only thing that matters. The 2 core or 1 core turbo bins seem to never be active that I can tell.

You can conceivably setup something with affinity, but there are so many trash threads and services in the background that this is going to be hard and sketchy.

I think a good experiment to try might be to turn off a couple of cores, and overclock the remaining two higher than you normally can. That is probably the best you can do.


That i5-2500K at 4.5Ghz is pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't think that any CPU upgrade is going to bring you any substantial improvement. That CPU in particular has very strong single-thread performance.

Look at the table in the middle of the article I linked. It's all about the 2500K. Bumping RAM from 1600 to 2133 jumped fps from 58 to 68.

I also looked at some other benchmarks, and I really don't see much value in a CPU change. But maybe for GTA5 it will help specifically. That article suggests you can get from 58 to 72 with CPU and RAM bump.

I'm still heavily CPU bound in GTAV with an i5 6600k @ 4.6 GHZ. I still get drops into the low 40's with pascal titan X with some settings turned down. The upgrade from 980 Ti to pascal titan X seemed to barely effect my FPS in 3D. Not that it won't be an improvement. But if the plan to upgrade to i5 or i7 skylake, and expect to get constant 60 FPS in 3D in GTAV with high-ish settings, I think you'll be disappointed.
