Any good space flight games on the horizon? We need another Freelancer to play in 3D
Some of my favorite games of all time was Independance War 1 and 2. Freelancer came along and recaptured the magic. I'm not an online gamer so never tried Eve. The X universe series were way too tedious and large. Is anyone going to bring back a story/mission driven space flight sim that has that magical ingredient called "FUN" that isn't too basic and yet not too complicated? And playable in 3D?

I know its not a standalone game, but I actually found SWTOR's space combat pretty fun and awesome in 3D Vision when I tried it in Beta. There were some issues with the planet depths and slight halo issues but overall the 3D effect was pretty awesome. I wanted to cap some vids of it but forgot to toggle the 3D option in FRAPs so they only came out in 2D. I think I have some screenshots though at least, I'll try and post them later. But ya SWTOR reminded me a lot of Star Fox 64 more than anything, and maybe that Star Wars console N64 shooter from awhile ago. There were only ~6-7 different missions, no PvP, and limited upgrades but with some improvmements it has some potential.
But ya I loved Freelancer as well, only major knock on it was it didn't support joystick. I think it does support 3D Vision though? Think I tried it a bit back and it looks great, only major issue was it doesn't support widescreen resolutions, I don't think.

Good to know. Yeah I can't figure out why Freelancer only allowed mouse controls, but I have to admit it did work well. I tried it again a long time ago (before 3D vision) and was appaled at the max resolution - when it first came out I was using a 17 inch CRT monitor. It looked like a 16 bit game on a newer widescreen... /confused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Just wish we could get another game like that.

I think the space battles in swtor look awesome in 3d but find it impossible to aim with the 2d cursor. I am forced to switch to 2d just so I can hit something lol

Yeah that's actually a pretty big reason I miss my 1920x1200 LCD, because even for games limited to 4:3 it could do 1600x1200 at 1:1 which was one of the highest resolutions supported at the time. Oh well. /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

I managed to get pretty good results using the lower depth, high convergence method. Try to get your cursors to appear at screen depth by adjusting convergence and the ship to pop out completely. Its obviously lower depth than you would like but the speed of the various objects flying past you make it a great experience still. Still really bummed I didn't get the fraps recordings of it in 3D, but here's a few pics for you to get an idea.

But ya I loved Freelancer as well, only major knock on it was it didn't support joystick. I think it does support 3D Vision though? Think I tried it a bit back and it looks great, only major issue was it doesn't support widescreen resolutions, I don't think.

But ya I loved Freelancer as well, only major knock on it was it didn't support joystick. I think it does support 3D Vision though? Think I tried it a bit back and it looks great, only major issue was it doesn't support widescreen resolutions, I don't think.

Oh well.
