AGP 7800GS Stereo? @all 7800GS owners out there
Hi!
I came back from work (have been there for the last 500 month, if you know what I mean) and decided to buy a new graphics card.
What about the 7800GS? It's the fastest card for AGP, I think.
Important questions:
1. What version of drivers should I use for stereo gaming?
2. Will all my games work in stereo? (HL, HL2, FarCry, Doom3, COD ...)
3. Will there be a performance boost compared to my 6800 (non GT, non Ultra, just all shaders and stuff activated through rivatuner and overclocked to 380/830)?
Please help, I'd like to know before I buy it.
My good old 6800 is working ok with the mentioned games in stereo, but I'd like to have a performance boost sometimes, especially for newer games.
Thanks in advance,
have fun,
M.
PS: What about the 6800 ultra compared to the 7800GS?

I had both 6800gt@ultra speed and 7800gs (this one is my current card)..
I can tell you.. with sm3 and "true" HDR the 7800gs, especially when overclocked, really performs better than the 6800.. for example I noticed a big difference in oblivion.. with the 7800gs I can play decently @ 1280x1024 with hdr and extra stuff like tree canopy shadows.. instead the 6800gt even if overclocked was literally killed in this situation.. but since with 3d stereo you can't activate HDR (at least i think so.. tell me if I'm wrong..), I don't know how much difference you will notice between the 2 cards.. anyway, all 7800gs reach at least 440Mhz for the core and 1400Mhz for the ram.. with some little overclock you should have in anycase some gain.. @ stock frequences they could be equal in games were there isn't a massive use of sm3..

Hi,
thank you for your answer.
You gave me very useful information for my third question.
But what about my first and second questions? What are your experiences with the 7800gs in stereo? Is it in stereo as good as the 6800gt/ultra? And what stereo driver do you use?
Thanks again,
M.

I upgraded from a BFG 6800GT OC is there is a huge difference, every game is better except farcry. I'm using 93.71.

Hi
I've went from PointOfView 6800GT (410/575MHz, 16 pipelines) to Gainward 7800GS+ (550/625MHz, 24 pipelines).
1. I use 91.31+91.31. Donno if there is better ones.
2. I know COD (1+2) works (and a lot of other games).
3. performance boost: approx 60% faster (:my upgrade).
PS. 7800 much faster (40-100%) especielly when rendering vegetation or in higher resolutions (1600*1200).

Thank you for answering.
So Far Cry is the only game in my list that has problems in stereo? What kind of problems are these?

Hard to explain, there is a brightness on the left side of the screen and poor 3D. I have the Gainward bliss card that has the 7800GT core so the problem might not be with other 7800GS's. Take a look, download to desktop and right click and choose "open with" "Stereo Test Application"

Farcry went from the best 3D game to the worst for me, but all other games run much better in 3D then they did with my old 6800GToc.

Have you noticed this thread on stereovision-forums?

Perhaps this (or another thread mentioned there) solves your problems in Far Cry.
Please give it a try and tell us what you found out.
Thanks,
M.

Yea, I found that thread about a week ago and tried most of what pertains to my problem. The image I posted was with the convergence adjusted to minimize the light, but even with the convergence the way it was set for my 6800GT, the 3D is not half as good. This was the best game in 3D for the 6800GT. There have only been a few official drivers so hopefully it will be fixed with a driver update in the future.

Hi,
now I have got a Point of View 7800GS AGP. Everything is good, except COD and DOOM3 have flashing textures! This occurs only in stereo.
Tried a lot of different driver combos. With Forceware 95.97 the situation got better, but since there isn't a matching stereo driver, some settings for stereo don't work and lasersight doesn't work either.
Please help!
Thanks,
M.

Ok,
I found out that the flashing textures in COD and Doom3 are better when I overclock my 7800GS to 425/700 with 91.31 driver pair. But it's far from perfect.
Only with 95.97 driver the flashing textures are gone, but there is no matching stereo driver for it!
What else can I do?
And when is the new stereo driver going to come out?
Otherwise 7800Gs is great, I recommend it for AGP and stereo.

If I recall, the best driver I found for COD and Doom3 was the 78.01 with the modded INF. Chopper posted the INF when I first got my card. If you want to give it a try, download both 78.01 drivers. ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/78.01/
Here is the INF mod. To mod:

- manually extract the 78.01 driver
- extract the modifed INF files over top
- launch setup.exe
- reboot
- install 78.01_3Dstereo.exe
- reboot
- enable Stereo3D
