POLL: Demographics of 3Dvision users
  4 / 5
One surprise to me at this point, only 10% use a 3D TV. Nearly 70% use 3D Vision monitors of some kind. 20% use projectors, which is some combination of 3D Vision and 3DTV Play. I would have thought that the advent of 3D TVs would have significantly bolstered the number of people using Nvidia 3D. If you happen to buy a 3D TV and happen to have a PC, it's only $40 for 3DTV Play. I more or less found myself here for that reason. With the advent of 3D TVs, Sony pushed for 3D games on the PS3. I was already into projectors at that point, and the idea of playing Shadows of the Colossus in 3D was too tempting, so I got an Acer H5360BD. Then when 3D PS3 games dried up a few months later, I got a gaming PC to pick up the slack. I had little awareness of 3D PC games before 3D TVs, HDMI 1.4 projectors, and PS3 3D games arrived.
My 3D TV works fine with 3D TV Play, and yet I always use my monitor. I just like gaming better sitting at my desk and up close to the screen rather than 10 feet away and with input lag.
OK, there have been 100 responses now, so without further ado, let me introduce the typical 3Dvision forum member: Hi. I'm 36 years old, and I'm male. Very male*. Like, I probably have hair covering my shoulders, am borderline Asperger's, and my name is probably something like Butch or Chuck or Biff. I live in an English-speaking Western country, though I have quite a few European friends. I play almost all of my games in 3D, using 2D only reluctantly. I love my 3D monitor, though I'm considering getting a projector. I love shooters and RPGs, and am also partial to open-world sandbox games. But my favourite genre of all is the 3rd-person action game. I tend to play games with keyboard+mouse (I prefer the fancy l33t gaming kind), but I'm almost as likely to use a gamepad. From time to time, I'll play a racing game, and I may even use a racing wheel on those occasions. I play about 1-3 hours of games each day. Though I've heard that some people play for 7 hours or more a day, and part of me is a little jealous. I play on PC, of course, though I have a smattering of other devices I sometimes use, like my PS3, Wii, or Android device for example. I have been a very slow adopter of new-gen consoles. As for the survey and in particular the lack of people using 3D TVs, I bet the vast majority of people with PCs and 3D TVs have never heard of 3D Play. In fact the majority of PC gamers don't even seem to know 3D Vision exists. I know every time I mention to someone that I've played Dark Souls, Skyrim, or the Batman games in 3D on a forum or twitch.tv chat, everyone seems surprised that it's possible. I think nVidia could do a way better job promoting their 3D. I also think there's still a huge prejudice against 3D (but oddly all those same people are desperate to get an Oculus Rift).

None when released and none later on. It's almost the same situation as for 3d-vision today actually.

I've not played a non-controller game since getting my projector, but I picked up a hospital-style table that's meant to go over beds. Perfect width for keyboard and mouse, height-adjustable, and on wheels so easily moved. When I want to use a mouse and keyboard, I can just wheel it out.

It seems that I am a typical 3D gamer... in the 30s, male and around 2-3 hours time for gaming per day. :D

Yes, you missed fighting gamess, they are actually pretty good in 3D (Streetfighter or Injustice, Mortal Kombat less); then you missed ouf Flightsticks and Flight-Simulator. Maybe also a question about Coop or competitive MP or preference SP... but overall really good idea and well done survey.

I would have participated but it was made only for people who use this powerful tool TO PLAY GAMES. (Really???) I use 3D Vision to assemble and edit raw images for the NASA/JPL HiRise project imaging Mars in Stereo in the highest resolution ever. In addition to editing all things 3D working on animated simulations for scientific purposes. If a game came out that challenged me and involved more than shooting fake characters in the face, I might 'play' too.

If you've been out of the medium for a while, it's worth poking your head back in. I still enjoy a bit of the old face-shooting, but I don't think I've shot anything in the face in several months, and only 3 of the 20 games on my "to play" list contain any kind of shooting at all.

These Forums are all about gaming and gamers, that's NVidia's main market for heavens sake. However, if you are knowledgeable about 3D programming, perhaps you could consider learning how to fix games that are broken, the community could do with a few extra modders. If you know DirectX and shader programming, maybe this could be something a bit more stimulating for you?
