My Acer GD245HQ review experiences of a new 3D vision user
  6 / 16
New to the forum here, just got this monitor today, so I thought I'd share my opinions.

-The inverter for the backlight is very noisy, had to tweak brightness levels to make it acceptable, in fact anything under 100 is disturbing.

-About the 2D picture quality, very disapointing for desktop use, it's utterly unacceptable with overdrive ON.

-2D scrolling: Honestly I was expecting way better, especially with black text scrolling over white background: test yourself with this little software Pixel persistence analyzer

-120hz for games without 3D vision: somewhat better than my previous LCD.

-Couldn't test 3D vision but I didn't buy it for that anyway.

Don't get me wrong there is an improvement on movement blurryness but it's still lightyears from any CRT out there.

The drivers didn't make any picture quality difference for me, running win7 it's detected as a standard p&p monitor, installed newest acer driver manually to have the same as Aquaknox shows in the screenies.

Hi new to the forum.

I just received my monitor today and went to the Acer website to download drivers, but it looks like there are only drivers for Vista and 7.

I'm still running XP Professional and was wondering if there were any drivers for it or if any of the Vista or 7s work for it? Anyone running this monitor and XP?

@Strife025:

Dude if you bought this monitor and are posting in 3d vision forum, means that you already know that minimum system requirements (in OS terms) for this technology are: Winodws Vista or Windows 7....this means it doesn't make sense asking for XP drivers for such monitor!

I've been looking for some monitors I might be using for a three nVIDIA Surround setup, much like todays AMD / ATI Eyefinity with my upcoming Gainward GTX 480 SLi graphics solution.

I currently own a HP LP2475W which is using a H-IPS panel which I find superior to everything I've seen from TN-based monitors to date.
The only drawback is.. It's expensive! I can't really see myself purchasing two more of those for a three monitor nvidia surround gaming setup!

And there is some clear disadvantages to it when it comes to gaming, when I first bought it I was mainly using my desktop for about anything, I was surfing, writing, watching movies, playing games.. All that kind of stuff on my desktop rig, so the choice of going IPS was quite easy as it was the superior choice for me when getting a monitor to replace my bad Sony GDM-F520 and being able to all that kind of stuff on it with a breeze!

Today I have my MacBook Pro which I'm using for anything besides serious gaming, now it has become more like my desktop is there for the more heavy gaming and server management stuff, I'm using my notebook for anything else rendering my choice of going IPS not as smart as it was back when I bought it.

Because of the overall higher response times of the H-IPS panel compared to different TN-based panels, along with the LP2475W being rather bold when it comes to contrast ratios and huge amount of efforts that needs to be put down in order to get the colours right (they aren't right even after using it for two years!)

I'm starting to consider something different, now I've got my Pioneer Kuro LX5090H ISF-calibrated three meters from my desktop, making me barley watch any kind of videos on my desktop any more, and as I'm using my notebook for anything other than heavy gaming and management like handling my QNap NAS etc.. I might actually be better of with something other than IPS.

This is where this Acer 120Hz monitor comes to mind, as it's rather cheap compared to my LP2475W, making it possible to go 3x for nvidia surround gaming, along with it supposedly have no ghosting what so ever (have to admit I noticed some on my HP).

But I'm still sceptical to the whole TN thing, I don't like cheap monitors, I've seen quite a lot from BenQ, Samsung and Asus when it comes to their cheaper 20-24" TN monitors and I've found them all to be a complete joke!
And I'm afraid I might find this Acer 120Hz to be somewhat the same?

Because even though smoothness is important while gaming, I still want a monitor whit overall good image quality, crisp and sharp textures and not too blurry colours.

I was so lucky that I could try out the nVIDIA 3D Vision with the Samsung RZ2233 for a few days at home, and personally I found the whole 3D-thing to be a gimmick, it was a litte "wow" at first but after a while it was more of a hassle than something I enjoyed. In most games the 3D actually took away much of my focus on the actually game, like my brain had to utilize much of it's efficiency on absorbing the whole 3D-thing making me finding it more difficult actually playing the game itself.

It's not that I hate 3D or anything, it's just that I don't like how it's done this time around. It seems like my brain (and my eyes?) have some hard time with technology used in nVIDIA 3D Vision, it's the same when I'm watching 3D Cinemas whom use the Dolby 3D solution, it strains my brain and eyes making me having to take of the glasses in the middle of the movie and giving me a real headache before it's all over.

On the other side I don't have these issues when watching 3D Cinemas using the Real-3D solution? So obviously the nVIDIA 3D Vision just isn't for me!

So I want the 120Hz for pure 2D Gaming smoothness and nothing else!
Unfortunately I didn't do any 2D Gaming while testing the RZ2233 so I have no clue how it works with 2D.

But after reading all the comments on horrible 2D performance on this Acer I'm getting sceptical?
I did find the Samsung RZ2233 to be WAAAAY too bright on my eyes, I was actually getting a headache just by looking at it for too long, even without playing 3D-games, making my LP2475W something sent from heaven in comparison.

So would anyone recommend this Acer 120Hz monitor for nVIDIA Surround Gaming? (No 3D!)
Or should I be looking at something else? Perhaps the Viewsonic V3D241wm-LED which is basicly the same monitor just with LED backlight?

In my opinion if you're used to anything else than TN for lcds, going back to one will feel very weird...

The 120hz does make things better for fast movement eye blurring but as long as lcds don't have some sort of scanning like CRTs, eye blurring will still be a big problem for gaming. At least for people like me who are really sensitive to it.

If you already game on LCDs and don't find motion blur to be an issue, then I would consider the cheapest other than TN alternative. I heard the next 120hz lcd will be LED backlit but I have yet to hear about non TN panels at that refresh rate.

All in all comes to motion blur: if it's an issue, get this monitor; if not, get anything else other than TN since you're used to those panels.

i noticed that when OD is swicthed off the light/contrast settings are not stored when you restart the LCD

very bad, i would like to keep the over drive off because the quality is much better but i dont want to set up contrast/light every time i turn on the LCD!!

edit:
i figured the issue
when you switch the Overdrive to OFF, everytime you restart the LCD the ACM will turn ON (even if disabled via menu). Still looking for a fix.
I initially had problems with the settings, but here's what I found that works well, for me anyways:

Brightness: 20
Contrast: 20
eColor Management: Standard
Colour Temp: User
ACM: On

The ACM is active, and a little weird at first. When you switch to full screen apps, like movies, it will auto-sense and adjust the contrast so that blacks become deeper, which then causes the colors to pop. When you minimize, the screen will be dark and almost faded, but then the ACM adapts, and everything will brighten again. It's a bit odd, and the whole thing happens within a couple seconds, but it's made life much easier for me and I'm impressed with the color reproduction. I hope this helps some of you that have been having issues.
Disabling the OD made no difference regarding the bad input lag, at least for me.

That's another thing I forgot to mention in my unbiased review: try putting a CRT next to this monitor, the input lag is clearly visible when dragging windows or playing fast paced FPS games like quakelive.

hm too bad but thanks for clearing that up
input lag is the main reason the acer isn't for me

Nice pics of the overdrive issue. The odd thing is though, the problem only really exists on the left hand side of the screen. The right hand side is not half as bad.

I've had this monitor for about 2 months now and I'm not happy at all.

With OD off the 2D image quality is OK.
Ghosting with 3D vision is terrible.

With OD on the 2D image quality is TERRIBLE.
One half of my monitor is "darker" than the other half.
Text is not crisp and looks a bit distorted.
Ghosting with 3D vision is a bit worse than the Samsung 22".

I have logged an RMA with Acer.
Now that I've read all the comments here, it seems like I'm not alone and it's actually "the way it is meant to be seen".
