x-fi and 5.1 possible ?
  1 / 2
i was reading around about the x-fi and im a little confused. back when soundstorm was the s#%t i rember reading an article that it was the only way to get true 5.1. but that didnt make sence to me either. so now i want to get me one of them new x-fi platiniums, and i want to know if i run it into my 5.1 reciever will i get true 5.1 for things that are so encoded or is there somthing elsi i would need to get ? i would of course user the digital output on it either digital coax or opti.

well i found the answer to my question. no creative card out there will do true dolby digital 5.1. there are only a couple cards that do.

creative uses EAX which is 5.1 emulation. it sounds neat but does not give the definition that dolby gives.

What whoever has told you is nonsense.

Firstly, this is a Virtual Reality forum, NOT sound forum. Stereo refers to "2", in sound it refers to 2 channels of audio. In vodeo it refers to 2 channels of video, ie virtual reality.

Secondly, x-fi not only has outputs for an external decoder, but also has an internal decoder which is far superior to anything on the market (true 24 bit sound rebuilding).

It also has many other Dolby features such as Pro Lohic, Dynamic Range, Dolby Digital EX.

EAX has nothing to do with 5.1 emulation, it is used mostly for gaming which it puts you into the game in true 5.1.

What you are referring to is CMSS, which converts a STEREO signal into 5.1, or just copies the stereo signal to the other 3 speakers.

PLEASE get your fact straight before posting on a forum which thousands of people read, who will take false information as Fact.

go scour the creative website. creative has NO dolby licensing. it cannot do anything but dvd's in dolby because they are already dolby encoded. and im not talking abouut the decoding im talking about the ENCODING which creative CAN NOT DO ! refer to this article. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19218

the only true 5.1 is dolby who INVENTED the term 5.1. when was the last time u went to a movie and saw a film in eax ?

anl all of that stuff about creative being the best in town is just propaganda spread by creative.

and im fully aware how creative makes a stereo signal come through 5 speakers, bose was the first to use it several years ago. many recievers now use it. it makes a normal stereo signal sound like 5.1 through EMULATION.

do some more homework and read up about theese card's: x-mystique and the new diamond extream sound 7.1 . they clearly say dolby on them where as creative does not.

thats dolby digital decoding, being able to play thing already dolby encoded.

dolby digtal encoding is what i was looking into, creative does not have the ability to do that. i got this info straight from creative's own mouth.

so if somone is wrong here its them. there are ONLY three cards that can do that.

Because listed in the box above is AC3 Dolby Digital and is checked which is the thing you say Creative's Card can not do.

Either it's what evil said or it's that we're this far deep into this thread without it having anything to do with Nvidia or Stereoscopic 3D (as in the 3D that's seen, not heard).

followed by the word "decode" not encode. it can only play already encoded dolby sources IE dvd. but games are a whole different story. only a couple cards out there can "ENCODE" in dolby

Good God man, will this make you be quiet?

Look at the top left. Unless there is something seriously wrong with our eyesights, that thing there says "Dolby Digital Bitstream Out on EXTERNAL DECODER". Am I wrong? Is this not what you wanted? Will this not work with your decoder? is your decoder something special?

As for "propaganda spread by creative", you show me another card on the mainstream market that has Live Hardware 16-bit to 24-bit conversion, and atleast 109dB SNR. Look at the SNR of your decoder. I can Guarantie that it will be MUCH lower. The internal decoder will produce far superior results.

Now, STOP making a spectacle of yourself.
