Thoughts on consumer version of oculus rift?
  1 / 15
I woke up really early and made sure to be early in queue. Then it happened. $599 + shipping. I sat for a good minute just looking at it. This is the price I paid for PS4 + xbox one. I was expecting $400ish and had plans to own Rift + Vive. Those plans became murkier by the second. I considered that Rift is more talked about and known to general populous and had the greater odds. So I purchased with little regets. Then I went back to sleep... I woke up and looked at destructoid + kotaku comments and was weary of the general gamers response. So then I went to 3D vision forums[here] and saw no discussion which I found odd considering. Checked MTBS3D more or less same. I've always planned that it would be "indie" for a time and then hopefully to pick up steam into mainstream AAA developers. But a part of my brain goes what indie developer will want to develop for a $600 platform with probably small user base. This is kind of against indies as I know them. In a panic I cancelled my order. I was kind of excited up till waking up and hearing general response. What is your thoughts on Oculus Rift as of right now. Did you pre-order? Are you excited/worried? Waiting for Vive? --- My thoughts continued... I feel like the price tag right now is pretty much the first step to its demise. The vive better be cheaper or VR is never going to take off. $600+ for a headset that needs to go with a $500+ gpu to run right. The market that could use it was already low and now they just priced out a good chunk of that. I had no problem dropping $400 on it, i probably would have even bit at $500. But $600 not counting shipping and taxes which bring it to the $700 mark is just way to much for something that has such an uncertain future. The only people who are going to be dropping there cash right now are big enthusiasts or people with alot of disposable income. Unless this thing drops and its mind blowing enough for use all to forget about the price tag and become a "must have" item everyone saves up for. It will just be another niche sim enthusiast accessory. This is brand new tech that needs alot of developer backing. Developers who arent going to bother unless the consumer base is there. Pricing out most of the market out the gate is a horrible idea. I consider gaming a pretty big hobby for me and have spent a good amount of money on my hobby. But even this price has me saying its to much and to wait and see what happens. I can only imagine a casual gamer looking at that price and just saying fuck that. That casual market was the one who is going to decide its fate in the long run and having a bunch of people sitting around waiting to see if its worth it is not going to get the backing it needs to survive. Im really curious to see now how much the vive is, if its the same price you might as well give up the hope of VR ever being mainstream. Especially since rumors are sony is pricing out half there market to considering you need a separate box to even run the thing its looking less appealing to the wallets on console gamers everytime something gets brought up about it. The i think the rift is double the price it need to be to survive. $199 everybody would have grabbed one, $299 people would have saved up. Anything over that and the casual market is gone. No casual market means no mainstream product. I cant see it ever lasting, as we all know from 3D vision VR isnt something you can tack on last moment. Games need to be built with it in mind. Developers arent going to bother if the casual market doesnt own it. Sadly i feel like this is going to be the new 3D vision, bunch of support at first then the sales just arent going to be there for them to bother continuing.

I was thinking of ordering it, but I convinced myself to wait this time. My fear is that Oculus or Vive will be just another gadget I won't really use due to motion sickness, lowres, lack of content. I think it is advisable to wait at least until April to see consumer toughts and reaction. PS: the software said my PC is not ready :)). What a load of crap. Apparently my CPU is shit and my USB 3.0 are not compatible.

I am reading a lot about the price and PC to run it all but there is only one game right now for that and no spec info for Oculus itself. Can someone post it right here if he knows something about final spec. I know that Volnaiskra will get one at launch because he bought first one and those people gets new one for free - so he might post he`s opinion like he did last time.

I will just use the MEME Phrase that was used ALL over the internet (and is still used today) when 3D Vision launched: GIMMICK! ^_^ HAHAHAHA:))) Never thought I am going to use that word, but it felt funny and stupid just saying/writing it. Now comparing: 600 USD for a helmet...with How many games available? I honestly don't know! + NVIDIA GPU. Compared with 3D Vision (150 USD for glasses + 300 USD Monitor) and 200+ games and more to come. + NVIDIA GPU. = So one is 600 USD vs 450/500 USD but the difference is the amount of available games NOW and more importantly YOUR Favourite games might be already fixed in 3D Vision! So, from the investment point of view currently I find it totally non-go! In half a year/ one year time, things will probably be better but even then I would still consider and will probably be against it /not buying one. I simply hate the idea of LOW resolution and wearing a damn heavy helmet + the exaggerated PC specs and PRICE!!! Just my 2 pennies:)

I been purchasing hi tech items for years and the price is a complete turn-off this is the first time in my life I passing on purchasing a high-tech gadget. This is half the price LG-55UB8500 which is excellent with 3D vision with the EDID override.

Personally I'm not even considering a rift because I suffer from motion sickness too easily in games that have a low fov. So until I've heard positive feedback from other motion sickness sufferers, it's off my radar. I really hope it succeeds and isn't derailed by a bunch of yahoos jumping on a bandwagon screaming gimmick. For those that buy it and love it, I hope others do not ruin it for you. @eqzitara great to see you posting again :)

I've posted my opinions in the other thread (hidden I guess), but I passed. Thought about it. Maybe if they would have announced the price two days ago, I would have spent my time talking myself into it. But the shock of 599.99 + shipping/tax just put me off and I couldn't. It's pretty much 800+ dollars once they finally release the Touch controllers. Figured the Vive would be around 1000, but I didn't expect Oculus to approach that. So I'm holding out to see what's up with Vive. I think a lot of indies will heavily support it so long as the high prices don't completely kill adoption. There's a small segment of gamers that spend a ton on hardware, but I think it's fairly niche. So we'll see how it impacts the more frugal enthusiast market. I say I think indies will heavily support it because the indie market has gotten horribly saturated. There's so much noise right now, it's incredibly difficult to stand out. With VR, a good product is going to have a much greater chance at breaking out in a market starving for content. I figured at that price, what did I have to lose? Even if the 3D sucked, it was still a good deal for the monitor alone. Needless to say, I was not disappointed with the 3D.
Naturally new platform has fewer games but rift already has pretty wide third party support. Something like Vorpx is already supporting pretty large library. http://www.vorpx.com/supported-games/ Ofc some of the games are not that optimal with the rift, when support is hacked afterwards. I think i read on reddit that around 70 percent of those games have s3d support while 30 percent only have reprojection 3d. Im going to buy one eventually but did not preorder. Ill buy when its actually instock which probably means summer or even later. While dk2 wasnt good enough for me to switch to VR gaming, it was really close. The cv1 prototype i tried was much, much better and faar exceeds the immersion level i get from my 3d vision projector setup. The resolution was good enough for consumer release now and i could only find trace of a screendoor effect in the worst possible scenarios(like completely white backround). Cant wait to try my favourite 3d vision games on it, they were already my favourite dk2 experiences i had. Hopefully vorpx support for cv1 comes quickly. I dont actually look forward to any of the official rift supported games :D Well maybe star citizen or elite dangerous.

Hell yeah I bought it, even though it came to about 1100 CAD after "fees" and we have a super crappy exchange rate right now. I'm surprised at some of the non-buyers on this forum. The average Joe doesn't have the understanding of what 3D brings to the table for gaiming, but we KNOW how awesome 3D gaming is, and add in VR and well..... VR is in another league then 3D vision. Really, to me VR is the next logical step for us 3D gamers. What can be more immersive then playing 3D games? especially if you have a projector, or surround setup? playing 3D games in virtual reality. Recently got the gear vr and I've been having a blast with it. There are some great games on gear vr now and the quality is better then the DK2 but still pixelated, supposedly CV1 has much less pixelation then gear vr. Even though I'm relatively poor, gaming comes before other crap (except essentials) and I get so much enjoyment out of it that I really never can complain that the rift costs 200.00 then expected. What is 200.00 really when you will have experiences that are priceless :; I can't wait to get my rift in March, and will have to sell my car for the Vive. I can't believe that 2016 is finally the year we get VR. I've been dreaming of this for years. I haven't been this excited since N64 and Mario 64.... I also have a PS4 and Xboxone, and I couldnt even muster up any enthusiasm for either console as they lack the 3D I'm used to now. I will still play exclusives like Drake, or Halo, but I'd gladly sell or get rid of both to fund a Rift.

I am also trying the consumer Rift (I pre-ordered today). The cost surprised a lot of people (most expected no more than $500), but it appears that Oculus is pricing the Rift more as viable, non-subsidized business product. Unfortunately, new technology like this is often expensive, during this part of technology adoption cycle. Vive is likely to cost more, while Sony VR will probably be cheapest... As I indicated in another topic, the ultimate next gen VR display may use foveal processing to make much more efficient use of rendering hardware, coupled with some type of retinal display.

The price is actually higher than I thought (699 EUR in Europe). I was expecting sth around 500 EUR. As I was waiting for the Rift for so long, I actually do not see for myself a problem purchasing it for the mentionned price. I love 3D Vision. I played the DK2 once and liked it a lot. So I am fine with it. But then the little compatibility program was telling me that I do not have the working USB3 ports (so I start doubting what the problem is - because I thought I am using 5 since long time) and that my CPU (I7 which is fine on most of new AAA titles maxed out in 3D Vision) would not be fast enough. Buying a PCI card with more USB3 ports is fine for me, but I did not actually thought about to change motherboard / cpu in 2016. So this is a bummer, but maybe I am still able to play it in conjunction with my Titan X... but to be sure on this, I have to wait some tests and so in the end every part of my body says: do not pre-order, there is actually no sense in it. So I will pass on pre-order, wait for tests, for a new CPU, for the Hive... Beside of this, my country Luxembourg is not considered to be cool enough to be shipped to. This would not be a big problem as I can use an address in Belgium or Germany, but then they tell me my Credit Card has to match with shipping country. Screw them. Why making it so difficult? I mean not even Switzerland is a priviliged destination for the Rift. Long story short: price is fine; recommended specs make me hesitate and order requirements are a joke and an insult.

The price is honestly not that big of a surprise, and it will actually ensure that only those with the proper hardware to run this will be purchasing it. Really puts a damper on the mass adoption fantasy that some enthusiasts have had, though.
Long story short: price is fine; recommended specs make me hisitate and order requirements are a joke and an insult.
They have to do this because there's lots of 3rd party price-gouging going on even with the massive sticker price. While it's a shame that your country is outside of their fulfillment area this time around, this is a sound practice to make sure that the people who they decided that they will sell to first off are able to receive theirs.
