Display gets black for a couple of seconds and 3d drops
  1 / 2
Hi.

I've just got my new nvidia 3d vision system which I used with the Acer GD245HQ display combined with an Nvidia Geforce 285 gtx card.

Basically 3d is working ok, however I have a serious problem:
Once in a while (times vary from a few minutes to an hour i estimate) when I have 3d vision enabled and play a game, the display will go black for a few seconds. With that, nvidia 3d vision is turned off (shutters are off, view through the glasses is much brigher and the green symbol on the pyramid is fainter). After a few seconds, the display turns on again and 3d mode is engaged again.

When this also happens when 3d vision is not turned on in a game, except if I configure 3d vision totally turned of in the nvidia control planel.
When 3d vision is completely turned games work correctly, and as far as I have seen or I remember I never got this problem on the windows desktop (including 2d programs running).

I have Windows 7 64 bit with the latest drivers (3d vision cd version 1.25) installed and use a 625watt psu (enermax, 50 amp on 12v rails, which i think is more than enough even for the upcoming gtx 470 I have ordered).

Can anyone else report this or similar problems?
What can I do?
Would it help to downgrade the drivers?

So far I've checked that the cables are firmly attached.

Update: I've installed the 3d driver from the cd that came with the package, version 1.18 and I played the demo video, and after somewhat after 2 minutes of video play the display went black (but video appeared to play on since I still heared the sound go on).

Morkeleb,

Don't worry, this is a common issue with 3D Vision. I have no idea what causes that and it's kind of random with ceratin games I think.

I've been using 3D Vision for almost 8 months and this issues first appear while playing Avatar the game. It was not frequently hopefully, But I would get this issue sometimes 3 times a day and after that It would take a week to appear again. I think this actually happened with other games but very rarely.

I thought it was a driver issue, but this happened to several drivers I had installed, so I think it's something related to 3D Vision. Others might not suffer from this cause every PC has differents configs, so who know what is the combination of factors that my cause this bug???

These last 2 months I haven't had this issue anymore and It might come back sometime, who knows. At least is very rare so I don't consider a major issue. It doesn't happen in 2D mode, only in full screen with 3D enabled.

Hope you get it rarely as well....

Not worry?
This is not acceptable and really make a game unplayable if fast reactions are needed.
Any 3d shooter, any roleplaying game where you can get attackt in randomly is really
badly playable with this problem.

Is this really a common problem?

If so, is ndivia aware of it and doing something against it?

I'd like others having this problem comment on that so we see if this is really common!

And no, it is not rare. As mentioned in can happen multiple times in an hour,
however I cannot really talk about statistics yet since I have not played long hours
in 3d yet.
Its more exhausting and difficult than I thought.
The gosting is a bit annoing, and it can even cause a headache
if I play it too long.

3D Vision ain't perfect yet my friend, but it is still 1000x better than playing 2D. I'm not sure it's common, but it happened to me like I said.

I didn't get bothered cause It happended rarely. In Avatar I had this like 3 times in a row in a hour but then I could play for hours and days without this issue.
I believe that If it happened quite frequently to me than I would be pissed off like you...

I understand it's not perfect,
it's still in it's childrens shoes.
Like I mentioned, monitor manufacutrers still need to work on ghosting, and mabe ndvidia can tweak there a little too.
Plus all the game developers need to ajust their games to properly support 3d (so that some status texts or menues dont hang right in front of you).

That is still understandable, but the display getting black is another thing, 3d has been around long enough now to fix those kind of basic issues.
I would be able to tolerate if it happened once a week, maybe once a day, but not once or more an hour.

I think it's nvidia's drivers or software.
It might be that it goes to black because it switches from 3d to 2d, and back again.
I once even had 3d turned of (by pressing the green nvidia button on the pyramid) and it once went back to 3d on its own.
So the switching mechanism seemes to be not 100% reliable.

I've now changed the IR emitter mode to default and synchronisation is somewhat better, problem with flashing premierly in 3d videos is gone.

However in 3d videos or 3d games it still goes black sometimes.

I've played with the unigine heaven 2.0 benchmark, and it's very nice!
Here I noticed the differences in ghosting:
There are two types:
- the first and more noticable comes from below-optimal synchronisation between shutter glasses and the monitor
and is noticable on the top and bottom of the screen (about 25-33% of them)
i guess there is little to be done about this as the only action against it would be to narrow the time the shutter is open,
which would darken the view futher
- the second is the natural ghosting from the screen that is not as strong or clear as the first,
and can ocurr everywhere

The first form is basically an amplication of the original second described, if I understand correctly.
And both types are mostly noticable where the monitor has to switch between dark and light.

Did I get this correctly?
Is there anything I can optimize here?

Also I would appreciate if someone had an input of the display dropping to black for a few seconds:
what may be the causes and how to counter them?

Does anyone else have this dropping to black problem?

BTW: The gtx 470 I ordered shipped. I expect it to arrive on monday:)
Maybe this helps with my problems.

Otherwise I'll have to try a complete reinstall of windows,
without knowing if it may help.

Hi again.

I did reinstall Windows now, and it worked!

So far no black screens anymore and no changing to or from 3d mode without me wanting to.
It even appears the 3d quality increased a bit, the screen is somewhat brighter in 3d mode now.

So anyone having problems like this, it may be a nice option to reinstall windows.
Maybe the problem was that I had ati drivers installed before (even though I did perform an uninstall on them).

When I had problems similar to this it was because of notification tray pop ups and Steam notifications. You can customize the notification tray to deactivate all of those icon's notifications, it made a pretty big improvement for me, although you do sacrifice functionality from other programs. Steam notifications can be turned off inside steam's settings as well.
