Well.. I'll tell you what:))
The short answer is NO.
The long answer is YES:
NO: you don't get better 3D and is something to be avoided.
YES: since I think nvidia is legally unable TO MODIFY proprietary code (aka shaders). Since they aren't allowed to reverse engineer and modify shaders (like Helix, etc) do they had to come up with different methods of calculating stereo 3D. This is the result.
The same method is being used in movies.
I know 3D Vision Automatic DOES modify shaders...BUT it's all done automatically by inserting some specific things in the shaders (you can read the papers on nvidia developer site)
However!!! that is not enough since most problematic shaders are particular...so manual intervention is required...which nvidia, again from the legal point of view I don't think they are allowed...which is a shame really... (No company will sue individuals for ADDING functionality to a piece of software...but a company like nvidia..definitely.. as they will say: "they make money from our software"... WHICH IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH...but what do birocratic people actually know about programming and 3D graphics.. => nada) Unfortunately, this is the world we live in....
What nvidia can do..is make a directx 9/10/11 debugger and decompiler (AGAIN part as an SDK and targeted at developers rather at this specific thing) that we (3D Vision users) will be able to use to fix different shaders...
So.. the only way I see getting proper twin camera stereo 3D real rendering is by doing this (wrapper/debugger/shader modification) or having 3D Vision Ready games released.
So, I welcome this addition! I do expect in time it will improve much more than this...but it takes TIME again:))
In the meantime, once Helix will release his DX11 debugger and Flugan will improve his we will basically have all the means necessary to have what stereo 3D we want (proper one with 50% performance loss, or calculated stereo 3D, with less performance loss probably better for laptops:) )
(I want to see the same thing happening with Surround... alot of games still are busted in Surround, and no official software exists to address that. But I expect that is a bit harder than this to make it happen)

I just started AC4 to watch it myself and guess what.
The current (beta) version of this 3D Driver makes the game "doesn't work anymore" right after starting it. Good job on that, Nvidia.
Game runs fine with 3D disabled in the Nvcpl and every other game runs fine so far too with 3D enabled.

That is weird...oh are you using 2xGTX580? I know on my GTX 590 (which atm is not in my pc and is a bit hard to put it in since is watercooled) I had some weird problems with AC4..
The way I "fixed" it was to have MSI afterburner running :))... I know weird... (3D Vision wise)
Otherwise the game would crash...

You could add some sort of HUD search function, but it would also affect on crosshair, enemey markers etc. Its better like this imo. This is why tridef dont have it either(well, im not sure, i havent messed with the settings to be honest, but at least by default its off).

You can see this happening with the mini map in the left hand corner. One of the support beams has the mini map overlapped on top of it.
Actualy, check out the stearing wheel at 6:01..thats a much better example.

Thanks for the reply SteveK - just knowing that Nvidia has some understanding of and can recognize the quality level of S3D gaming experience that its users have come to love and expect gives me hope that we may see future 3DVision titles and improvements in the solution that you've presented.
(we'll forget for the moment that on the one hand Nvidia understands the quality we expect and then on the other hand continues to label titles as "Good" or even "3DVison Ready" that clearly contradict the quality understanding/expectations of the other hand)
We are very passionate about our S3D gaming experiences on Nvidia hardware. I'm sure it would not take much poking around the 3DVision forum to find software features and new hardware we'd like to see introduced or made available to S3D gamers. (personally I'd like to see a G-Sync enabled consumer priced true 1080P 60Hz per eye projector and/or the ability to overlay two projectors (one for each eye) or use two in a portrait or landscape surround high resolution mode but that is just me...)
Considering that many of us figured 3DVison was orphaned/abandoned while Nvidia focused its efforts on mobile CPU's and other goals, (just having Nvidia employees posting in the 3DVison forum nearly caused a major coffee spill - from the surprise!) seeing Nvidia invest in S3D solutions for us to try/use is very much appreciated.
I'll look forward to a future where Nvidia's new S3D solution equals or surpasses the quality of the Tridef solution and even renders S3D as well as 3DVision did for so many years.

I haven't tested this since I have none of those games installed, but some thoughts anyhow.
For me, the beauty of 3D Vision is in it's ability to display things at the same depth they would be as if you were there for real, that's what makes it a true revolution in game immersion. And it's a shame that so few have had this experience due to the setup required relegating it to an enthusiast hobby, but I can't imagine how anyone who has experienced this could dismiss it, it truly is the best thing to happen to gaming in over a decade. However with something like fake 3D where you have such low depth that it becomes a sort of "why bother" kind of deal or a "gimmick" as people like to say, I don't think it does anything to help perception or adoption of the technology and will likely only result in more disappointment.
It's nice that there's at least some experimentation being done to get 3D in DX11 games, but hopefully this is just a temporary stopgap or stepping stone to real DX11 3D. And I agree with others that rating such fake 3D games as "excellent" is not something that should be done as it may cause even more people to dismiss the technology without knowing what proper 3D is like. It should be made very clear to users what the limitations of this method are compared to real 3D.

I just updated to the new beta drivers and FarCry 3 is still rated as Fair for me.

Make sure to change the driver to DX11 in Far Cry 3, in order to use '2D Vision', not sure if it shows up in the rating or not but you'll definitely know if you're not using Helix's fix, the depth will be set extremely low.
edit: just checked, yeah it'll show up as 'good' ... it's better than 2D but nowhere near real 3D with Helix's fix, and at least for me it runs 'Far Worse in 2D Vision'.

They are not Nvidia size, but they are a fairly good sized company that's doing well enough, if they are doing something illegal I see no reason why developers are not suing them over and over.

First of all I would like to thank Nvidia for finally extending there support for 3Dvision which we had thought as been abandoned by Nvidia.
I believe that something is better than nothing but the problem here is that we got spoiled by the Real 3Dvision jaw dropping games like Tomb raider,Batman Arkham Origins,Metro etc.
I guess we missed out Outlast :)
Just imagine that game in full 3Dvision glory and the chills it will send it down your spine in real 3D.

We all know that this type of 3D implementation is less harsh on the hardware which means we dont see FPS falling to half when we enable Real 3D.
Down the line may be Nvidia and the monitor vendors are planning to come up with QHD and 4K 3D monitors.
Now just imagine 4K and real 3D which is a deadly combo which no hardware on the planet as of now can run it.
But if it is 4K and the fake 3D then there will be minimal impact on the FPS.
May be this is the long term goal of Nvidia and so now they have come up with this feature.

Well.. I'll tell you what:))
The short answer is NO.
The long answer is YES:
NO: you don't get better 3D and is something to be avoided.
YES: since I think nvidia is legally unable TO MODIFY proprietary code (aka shaders). Since they aren't allowed to reverse engineer and modify shaders (like Helix, etc) do they had to come up with different methods of calculating stereo 3D. This is the result.
The same method is being used in movies.
I know 3D Vision Automatic DOES modify shaders...BUT it's all done automatically by inserting some specific things in the shaders (you can read the papers on nvidia developer site)
However!!! that is not enough since most problematic shaders are particular...so manual intervention is required...which nvidia, again from the legal point of view I don't think they are allowed...which is a shame really... (No company will sue individuals for ADDING functionality to a piece of software...but a company like nvidia..definitely.. as they will say: "they make money from our software"... WHICH IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH...but what do birocratic people actually know about programming and 3D graphics.. => nada) Unfortunately, this is the world we live in....
What nvidia can do..is make a directx 9/10/11 debugger and decompiler (AGAIN part as an SDK and targeted at developers rather at this specific thing) that we (3D Vision users) will be able to use to fix different shaders...
So.. the only way I see getting proper twin camera stereo 3D real rendering is by doing this (wrapper/debugger/shader modification) or having 3D Vision Ready games released.
So, I welcome this addition! I do expect in time it will improve much more than this...but it takes TIME again:))
In the meantime, once Helix will release his DX11 debugger and Flugan will improve his we will basically have all the means necessary to have what stereo 3D we want (proper one with 50% performance loss, or calculated stereo 3D, with less performance loss probably better for laptops:) )
(I want to see the same thing happening with Surround... alot of games still are busted in Surround, and no official software exists to address that. But I expect that is a bit harder than this to make it happen)

Power3D mode was never good for tridef because it made the hud and other text appear as if it was painted on the models/environment. And now nvidia has it :(
I would have prefered just the normal way that tridef handles the 3D (without power3D).
Can no one just rearrangle the 2D text so that it would appear correctly in correlation to the rest of the 3D?

I just started AC4 to watch it myself and guess what.
The current (beta) version of this 3D Driver makes the game "doesn't work anymore" right after starting it. Good job on that, Nvidia.
Game runs fine with 3D disabled in the Nvcpl and every other game runs fine so far too with 3D enabled.
My actual User Name is "Sevion" but as Nvidia is horribly incompetent whenever touching anything software-related, they just screwed up my User Name when migrating their forum. Don't be like Nvidia, learn proper programing.GTX 980i7 4790KGA-Z97X-Gaming 7
That is weird...oh are you using 2xGTX580? I know on my GTX 590 (which atm is not in my pc and is a bit hard to put it in since is watercooled) I had some weird problems with AC4..
The way I "fixed" it was to have MSI afterburner running :))... I know weird... (3D Vision wise)
Otherwise the game would crash...

You could add some sort of HUD search function, but it would also affect on crosshair, enemey markers etc. Its better like this imo. This is why tridef dont have it either(well, im not sure, i havent messed with the settings to be honest, but at least by default its off).

You can see this happening with the mini map in the left hand corner. One of the support beams has the mini map overlapped on top of it.
Actualy, check out the stearing wheel at 6:01..thats a much better example.
Thanks for the reply SteveK - just knowing that Nvidia has some understanding of and can recognize the quality level of S3D gaming experience that its users have come to love and expect gives me hope that we may see future 3DVision titles and improvements in the solution that you've presented.
(we'll forget for the moment that on the one hand Nvidia understands the quality we expect and then on the other hand continues to label titles as "Good" or even "3DVison Ready" that clearly contradict the quality understanding/expectations of the other hand)
We are very passionate about our S3D gaming experiences on Nvidia hardware. I'm sure it would not take much poking around the 3DVision forum to find software features and new hardware we'd like to see introduced or made available to S3D gamers. (personally I'd like to see a G-Sync enabled consumer priced true 1080P 60Hz per eye projector and/or the ability to overlay two projectors (one for each eye) or use two in a portrait or landscape surround high resolution mode but that is just me...)
Considering that many of us figured 3DVison was orphaned/abandoned while Nvidia focused its efforts on mobile CPU's and other goals, (just having Nvidia employees posting in the 3DVison forum nearly caused a major coffee spill - from the surprise!) seeing Nvidia invest in S3D solutions for us to try/use is very much appreciated.
I'll look forward to a future where Nvidia's new S3D solution equals or surpasses the quality of the Tridef solution and even renders S3D as well as 3DVision did for so many years.

For me, the beauty of 3D Vision is in it's ability to display things at the same depth they would be as if you were there for real, that's what makes it a true revolution in game immersion. And it's a shame that so few have had this experience due to the setup required relegating it to an enthusiast hobby, but I can't imagine how anyone who has experienced this could dismiss it, it truly is the best thing to happen to gaming in over a decade. However with something like fake 3D where you have such low depth that it becomes a sort of "why bother" kind of deal or a "gimmick" as people like to say, I don't think it does anything to help perception or adoption of the technology and will likely only result in more disappointment.
It's nice that there's at least some experimentation being done to get 3D in DX11 games, but hopefully this is just a temporary stopgap or stepping stone to real DX11 3D. And I agree with others that rating such fake 3D games as "excellent" is not something that should be done as it may cause even more people to dismiss the technology without knowing what proper 3D is like. It should be made very clear to users what the limitations of this method are compared to real 3D.
I just updated to the new beta drivers and FarCry 3 is still rated as Fair for me.

edit: just checked, yeah it'll show up as 'good' ... it's better than 2D but nowhere near real 3D with Helix's fix, and at least for me it runs 'Far Worse in 2D Vision'.

If they have found a legal route to do what they're doing, I really hope Nvidia can do the same. Still your suggestion for a debugger and decompiler is the best option, since even 3d vision ready games (those were the times!) were in fact inferior to Helix fixes in many cases.

First of all I would like to thank Nvidia for finally extending there support for 3Dvision which we had thought as been abandoned by Nvidia.
I believe that something is better than nothing but the problem here is that we got spoiled by the Real 3Dvision jaw dropping games like Tomb raider,Batman Arkham Origins,Metro etc.
I guess we missed out Outlast :)
Just imagine that game in full 3Dvision glory and the chills it will send it down your spine in real 3D.

I have another speculation but I dont know how far I am correct. Please correct me if I am wrong.
We all know that this type of 3D implementation is less harsh on the hardware which means we dont see FPS falling to half when we enable Real 3D.
Down the line may be Nvidia and the monitor vendors are planning to come up with QHD and 4K 3D monitors.
Now just imagine 4K and real 3D which is a deadly combo which no hardware on the planet as of now can run it.
But if it is 4K and the fake 3D then there will be minimal impact on the FPS.
May be this is the long term goal of Nvidia and so now they have come up with this feature.
