Need help picking a 3d monitor
  2 / 2
I have 3D Vision Surround with the Rog Swifts. I'm also running Tri-SLI 980's (people think it's overkill but it's actually needed to triple screen 1440P 3D). It's simply amazing. However, it did cost a small fortune to put together, and I wouldn't recommend this to everyone. What I would recommend is getting a single 980 over 2 970's in SLI. Though the 970's will be faster (in general) you add problems into the mix. SLI introduces an additional frame of latency (lag) due to AFR. Microstutter is real and can be a problem in certain games (though it's probably not as bad as some people believe). There are weird bugs with SLI and 3D, like Chrome and Firefox opening to a white screen, game crashes in certain cases, etc. So I'd always say get the single best card you can afford (and not 2 cheaper cards). The only time I think SLI is worth it is if you already have the top-end card and want/need more power. In terms of the monitor, the Rog Swift really is the best thing out there overall. The resolution is great, and the fast refresh makes a big difference in 2D games (especially with G-Sync). However, you can't use G-Sync in 3D, and 3D is capped at 120Hz. So really, you can get a cheaper 3D Vision 2 monitor w/o G-Sync and you won't be missing much if you only want to play in 3D. There is also some noticeable ghosting with the Rog Swift that seems slightly worse than older 3D monitors I tried. It's not a deal breaker, but I was hoping ghosting would improve but it hasn't really. On the bright side, I have not noticed any of the lines or artifacts people are complaining about. Looks fine to me. If the Rog Swift seems too expensive to you, go with a cheaper 1080P 27" 3D Vision 2 monitor. Make sure it is 3D Vision 2, as 1 is super dark and not worth messing with at this point. There are a couple out there, but I haven't tried them so I won't speculate. Triple screen is amazing, but you will need a lot of power to run that in 3D. Just as an example, in Battlefield 4 I can get "only" 60 fps at maxed settings 7680x1440 2D. With medium settings it's around 90 fps (and looks great with G-Sync). I haven't tried 3D yet, but this can easily drop framerates to half. Another example, Bioshock Infinte ran at 100fps at maxed setting 2D, in 3D (and fake 3D at that) I had to drop to low settings and I was still barely getting 60fps. And this is on a ridiculous tri-980 rig. Surely at 1080P it would be better performing, but maybe still a lot for a single 980. So I think the best thing is to get one 980 and one 27" monitor. Then, down the road, you can always add 2 more monitors, or another 980, if it seems like you get an upgrade itch or just want to see how good it looks. Hope that helps.

Worth mentioning that most people don't see performance gains with tri-sli+3D. I'd be interested to see benchmarks.

Sounds like the Swift is going to be perfect for me. I doubt I'll upgrade to tri-swift at any point (just to much $ for my lifestyle :P). I was considering tri-24" if I didn't get a 27". I won't be in 3d all the time and I think that the g-sync feature will help in WoW raids when FPS drops down from poor coding or CPU bottle necking or whatever. I am going to pick up the GTX 980 as soon as Asus releases the Poseidon or one of the top brands come out with a 6-8gb card.. Hopefully the community or Asus decides to tweak the drivers to improve the Swift. It's still really young and really adopted it seems, so I think there is hope. I'm just going to cut the RaidR out of my build to compensate for the extra $ spent on the bleeding edge stuff. Thanks guys. To be honest I'm not really interested in the Rift as much as 3d...
I was afraid of that with 1440p. There goes my budget D: So far I have: Intel i7-4790K ROG Maximus VII Formula X97 16 GB G.Skill DDR3 2400 Dual 256gb Samsung 850 pro (w/ 1TB HHD) NZXT H440 mid-tower case ThermalTake 1050w ToughPower PSU Need to get: Asus GTX 980 Poseidon (hopefully they release it with 6-8gb VRAM) ROG Swift Asus RaidR Custom water loop with Swiftech block&pump Then probably add another GTX 980 next year after my girlfriend fully dumps me...
For your build spec there- since you are price conscious, I'd make some changes to your build to improve the value, or free up money for upgrades like 980 instead of 970. If you want some just for the fun of hot-rodding, I totally understand. Suggestions: 1) Skip the RaidR, the specs on that are OK, but not even close to worth the money. Do Raid0 (keep backups...) of your SSDs, and you'll get nearly the same read/write rates. The maximum speed doesn't matter nearly as much as small writes though. Do 3 SSDs in Raid0 for a great performance value. 2) Don't do custom water loop, use All-in-one water coolers. Cheaper, easier, and more reliable in general. You can do one for the CPU, and one for the GPU with a special bracket. Definitely cheaper, but probably not as much fun though. 3) Don't do the Pro version of 850. Do dual 256GB Evo 840s instead. You give up essentially nothing to go with this cheaper model. Maybe the longer warranty. Overprovisioning matters more than anything. The web talks trash about SSD lifespans, but it will take forever to wear out even an 840 Evo. 4) Go with slower RAM. You can save $30-$50 on same 16GB. RAM speed is essentially irrelevant for gaming. Also that extra 8GB is not going to get a lot of use, unless you do video or photo editing. 5) Get a smaller PSU. 1KW is waaay overkill for a build that you expect to even SLI 980s. People almost always overspec their PSU. More is not better.

Totally going for the Rot Rod type build. I hoped on Newegg for the cyber-sale and just picked up a bunch of hardware for stupid low prices. I will end up doing some photo & video editing. I haven't built a decent PC since before SLI was even around so I'm jumping with a little higher budget then I probably need, I'm going to order a Swift and grab a GTX 980 by the end of the month, and probably add another a couple weeks after D: Really what is bringing me back is 3d Vision 2. I have no idea why people are so into rift, they complain about the glasses but wanna put goggles on? I'm really hoping WoW looks great in 3d because I ended up playing that game most last time I built a good PC. Looks like some other titles I'll be into like Diablo and LOL, DOTA2. I like FPS don't get me wrong but I only ever log them for a adrenaline rush.
