Loads-a-money! What do you guys do?
  2 / 2
Well lets see here.

I am an unemployed redneck who sits at home and spends all my time on the internet. LOL but thats quite close. I will be entering back into school next quarter at UNC to finish of one of my degrees. Before the housing industry crashed I was a licensed building contractor in the southeastern US. I was lucky enough that I had several good years before the market went south, and I saw it coming and got out before I lost any money personally.

But I can probably explain some of this for you. Almost everyone will have a hobby of some kind. Such as I used to collect classic cars and at I had 7 of them at 1 time or another. So giving up classic cars and going to PCs was actually cheaper for me. But I have seen people spend a small fortune collecting all sorts of things and sometimes it does not make sense to the rest of us.

I know a guy that has over 200,000 dollars worth of comic books and lives in a run down mobile home (go figure). But people will spend there money on things they desire, different people just desire different things for different reasons.

My girlfriend works really hard and saves to buy the things she likes to have around her.

Then I sell them on ebay and use the funds to "invest" in computer equipment which devalues faster than chocolate gold in the desert.

I'm a rent boy !

The key is to try and not be an innovator but an early adopter....hopefully by which time the prices have come down

Alternatively, try and be creative,....for instance, i have a Q9300 and a pair of 8800 GT's,....not cutting edge but i get great performance with this and will only need to update when i see a performance hit with new titles or are forced to when there is a technology change , such as DX11, which i did when DX10 came out.

Bleeding edge costs a lot of bloody money !

I buy only twice a year. Once during the beginning of the year when I get my earned income credit+student aid and then again in the fall after I have had some time to save for the year and I get another round of student aid.

To igsoft above, I wish to eat your brain and take your powers and money.

It's funny how people are able to obtain things, even when they have nothing to start with.

Crack heads for example, some of which are unemployed still find means to smoke crack ! LOL
(Not joking about it just using it as an analogy)..

That being said I work a job. I'm a computer technician. But my wife makes 2x as much money as I do.

What's my secret ?

PC gaming is pretty affordable compared tons of other hobbies. You just have to save up more money once a year or so. If you're always spending all your money down to $20 in your checking account, like I see a lot of people do, you never really get nice things, just an overwhelming amount of junk.

This is true if you are able to make educated choices about which hardware will provide the most bang for buck.

However most average joes do not realize they don't need to spend 2grand on a Mac to do some word processing and emailing..

I definitely agree with your statement though that if you save up it's relatively cheap compared to other hobbies in that
you really only need to upgrade your GPU every year or two.

I pay
400 a month on a car note,
150 a month for car insurance
320 a month on student loans
800 a month to the house (includes for rent and groceries + cable (Work for cable company so bill is only about 60 a month if i have no overseas calls) + att phone bill)my wife covers the additional 800 for the house stuff)
320 a month into my savings account (saving for a house, kids and to start my masters)
160 a month on gas
200 a month for misc
total of 2350 a month (damn)
I only bring home 1100 a paycheck (just about 2200 a month)(after being robbed by the government and state)

I think I'm over spending somewhere.

But if I save some of the misc cash I can splurge on some new hard ware every once in a while. Like 2 Gtx 285s last september and a Acer Monitor this Feb.

Iam currently unemployed now and still sick for obvious reasons but I id get 14k from my last job for ill health and had about 7k saved :) so thats how I have payed for most of my stuff for the last few years

i7 extreme 965, 2x gtx280s new motherboard 12 gig ram

46" LED tv, panasonic multiregional blu-ray player

another xbox 360 for the bedroom for thenights i cant sleep

acer h5360 with 84" screen and nvidia vision goggles.

Now most of my savings have gone but I still think it was all worth it :)

Well believe it or not, alot of people dont sell their old stuff. I always sell my part sbefore they become obsolete. That way I stay on top. Of course I still pay 40-50% of the cost but hey if your like me and want goodies all the time, it's what you have to do.

For example other than PC games, I keep maybe 10% of the games I buy. Maybe less.
