3d stereo w shutterglasses on a pc with vista possible workaround for vista pcs
I recently bought all the equipment necessary for stereo 3D, only to find out, the new nVidia stereoscopic drivers for vista only support anaglyphic... Thanks nVidia.
What I had so far: Pentium Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.40Ghz, 3GB RAM, GeForce 8500GT, running on vista home premium 32b.
What I bought: nVidia GeForce 7950 GX2, Sharp XR-10X DLP, eDimensional shutterglasses, dongle, 3dflightsim's long-range IR emitter, Tri-def 3d experience.
The possible solution is to run both Vista and XP on the same computer; each OS being installed on a different partition of the Hard Disk. That way when you double boot, you can choose which operating system to use--in this case XP; and use some older nVidia drivers that support shutterglasses.
I was wondering if anyone had tried this method; it seems like a possible workaround.. Or if there were any suggestions on how I can use this computer for shutterglasses-stereo 3d, considering it came pre-installed with Vista..

In your situation dual-boot is probably your best option. I think there might be a registry tweak that would allow you to possibily use your 8500GT in XP, but I'm not sure about that. I think its for the G80 chip only. But you would still need XP, you can't use shutter-glasses in Vista AFAIK.

I've recently upgraded to an AMD Phenom 9500 quad core and GeFore 8600GT with WinXP and my eDimensional glasses no longer work either. I've tried lots of combinations of Forceware (i.e. the graphics card drivers) and Nvidia's stereo drivers with no luck.
The main problem is that the last version of stereo drivers that support the eDimensional glasses is quite an old one, so only supports up to something like the Geforce 7 series - don't know exactly, but the Gefore 8 series are too new for this driver to support.
The oldest stereo driver that supports the Gefore 8 series DOESN'T support the eDimensional glasses. Thanks to the scant information on the eDimensional website plus NVidia no longer supporting the shutter glasses, I'm a bit stuck for using the glasses with my new system.
The way round this for me was to dig out my old PC - 1.4GHz Pentium 4 with a GeForce 440 graphics card running WinXP - and it installed very easily on this. Only works with a CRT monitor, luckily I kept that when I bought my flat screen, so my next purchase will be a second desk to put it on!
I'd recommend trying the GeForce 7 with the 91.31 graphics card drivers and 91.31 stereo drivers with it on WinXP. I think both of these drivers came on the CD with the glasses, or you can download the stero drivers from here:

Thanks a lot for the info, greatly appreciated!! I tried for a few of days to get it to work, but only got frustrated. Today Im installing xp on a different partition to dual boot, and swithching the graphics card to the 7950 GX2. hope it works.. I will post my results.
I just hope nVidia eventually remembers all of us into shutter-glasses 3d, and releases stereo drivers for their latest graphics cards, and the dreaded vista..
Considering their latest stereo drivers support anaglyph; one would think, it wouldn't take that much more effort--on their behalf, to support shutter-glasses as well...
Maybe if we all start sending them e-mails, they will consider this, and make everyone happy; because I don't think nVidia visits their own forums at all...

After a few days of trying in every possible way to get my hp pavillion computer to double boot with vista/xp and not suceeding (it turns out hp's motherboard does not support xp) I decided to buy a new computer. Specs are similar, but this one will have the GeForce 7950 GX2, and windows XP. Hopefully I will be able to use my shutterglasses and my DLP projector and see stereo 3d.

Im running windows XP, on pentium quad Q6600 with 4GB RAM, and GeForce 7950 GX2.
Im using X3Ds shutterglasses and dongle and 3dflightsim's long-range emitter.
Images are projected onto a white wall; floor-to-ceiling, using Sharp's XR-10X DLP projector.
The drivers that worked for me are 163.71 forceware, and 162.50 stereoscopic. I had to use a registry clean tool, and reboot in safe mode to completely delete the old drivers and get the new ones to work. This part was a big pain, because of all the times I had to reboot, until I ran onto the right combination of drivers.
Some games work great, but others freeze when I activate stereo 3D via hotkey. I read somewhere that it has to do with the multicore system I have, and that you should only allow one core to work for certain games. I have yet to try this solution..
Another problem Im having is that movies both on Tri-def and X3D software can only be seen interlaced, and this is a major hassle as it cuts your resolution in half. Still have to figure that one out, but I know Tri-def software is only compatible with quadro cards.. Anyone know how to watch field sequential dvds or 2d to 3d movies without having to do so interlaced, with my current system? I would greatly appreciate any help..
I must say that its been worth the effort. I ride roller coasters in 3D using nolimits, and can play some great games as well.. I just wish I had done this sooner..

Aren't the 160 and up drivers only supporting red/blue and the Zalman screens? I assume that you can use any shutter glasses as if it was a Zalman screen then with these drivers?

I can confirm that I have been using the 163.71 forceware and 162.50 stereoscopic drivers with excellent results at 85Mhz refresh rate for a couple weeks now. Im using X3Ds shutterglasses, which could be eDimensionals, not sure about that one.. Also, I project on a DLP projector..
I tried with older dirvers, but they would not work, and my computer would crash everytime. But luckily I found a forum that suggested to use this combination of drivers, and they worked!
Also, I did have to install a fix for my Q6600 quad processor, and most importantly use Driver Clean Pro to install the new drivers. These last two steps were decisive to make it work. But I definitely see stereo 3D using my shutterglasses. I did have to reboot many times until it worked. Basically doing all the steps.
1. erase nvidia drivers - reboot in safe mode
2. run driver cleaner pro - reboot
3. install forceware 163.71 - reboot
4. install stereoscopic drivers 162.50 - reboot
it was suggested to install the stereoscopic drivers twice, so I did..
5. install stereoscopic drivers 162.50 . reboot
ran the test application, and, voila, the nvidia logo comes straight at you.. This was a great moment btw..
Another thing I had to do, is to enable old style menus (or something like that) on the graphics card, in order to see the stereo 3D options, which I modify through start/control panel/screen/configure/advanced/Geforce 7950 GX2/Additional Properties
Games I have tried and tested so far and that work without much issues:
Nolimits coaster simulation - incredibly realistic, perfect! had to turn off flares.
Need For Speed Underground - Great
Driver Parallel Lines - Perfect 3D except for some random flickering every 5 or so minutes. also had to turn off shadows.
Lock on - Great stereo 3D flying sinulation, not the greatest graphics, but works.
Other games Ive tried:
Elder Scrolls - Oblivion - got it to work once, but havent been able to again, no idea why
Xplane9 - Crashes everytime
GTR 2 - crashes everytime
Need for Speed carbon - stereo 3d activates, but it just brings the screen forward, not adding any depth at all. All you see with shutterglasses is the same 2d screen about 3 feet closer (remember im using a projector)
Fable - Crashes every time

So with the stereo 162.50 driver, which stereo device output options do you have? You select the Zalman screen and your shutter glasses are compatible? It would make sense as the Zalman screens probably use the same sync signal indeed. Too bad we lost field sequential output. grrrr.

Field sequential output is most definitely supported in the 162.50 stereoscopic drivers. Been using it for awhile now..
Stereo type output options:
DDC VGA glasses (IO Display)
Dual VGA Output
Vertical Interleaved
Anaglyph
Sharp 3D Display
Dual VGA with mirror up/down
Planar mirror left/right
NeurOK front/back
Phillips 3D Multiview panel
Direct 3-Pin DIN VESA Connect
What I did is I selected classic view on the nvidia control panel, and then go to control panel/screen/configuration/advanced options/GeForce 7950 GX2/additional properties, and I see the usual stereo options:
Then you have the other typical options such as stereo separation, stereo enabled mode, stereo game configuration, stereo setup & test, advanced stereo properties, stereo compatibility settings...

OR here:

It seems the NVidia stereo drivers that run on Vista only work with polarised 3D stereo screens:

Got £400 spare? Me neither.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

I will post the results next week..
I will post the results next week..

Thanks for any further clarifications.

Fable - Crashes every time
Thanks for any further clarifications.

Field sequential output is most definitely supported in the 162.50 stereoscopic drivers. Been using it for awhile now..
Stereo type output options:
DDC VGA glasses (IO Display)
Dual VGA Output
Vertical Interleaved
Anaglyph
Sharp 3D Display
Dual VGA with mirror up/down
Planar mirror left/right
NeurOK front/back
Phillips 3D Multiview panel
Direct 3-Pin DIN VESA Connect
What I did is I selected classic view on the nvidia control panel, and then go to control panel/screen/configuration/advanced options/GeForce 7950 GX2/additional properties, and I see the usual stereo options:
Stereo Properties - in Stereo Type, select DDC VGA glasses (IO Display)
This selects shutterglasses.
Then you have the other typical options such as stereo separation, stereo enabled mode, stereo game configuration, stereo setup & test, advanced stereo properties, stereo compatibility settings...
