3D Vision Surround @ 2160 x 1280 using Acer H5360 x 3 in portrait. Any experiences?

I currently use acer LCD 235HQ which provides an excellent gaming experience using 3DVision using 2xGTX480s in SLI.
I have a somewhat older CPU/Motherboard combination and am planning a new build in fall with hexacore core 1-7 980 or equivalent and adding a another GTX480, giving 3 way SLI.
Was looking for a larger format display and initially was excited about 3D flatpanel TVs. This would allow viewing from a more relaxed distance (which should reduce the convergence/accomodation disparity that bother some people viewing in stereo). I have several friends and family members who actually enjoy watching the campaign mode of several games in 3D but it would be better presented in large format. However using 3DTV play it seems display resolution will be limited to 720p @ 60Hz per eye, instead of full 1080p.
I think 3x720p projectors (like H5360) in portrait mode would, in principle, provide a very good alternative to 3 23" inch flat panels which only work in landscape mode giving a very stretched FOV/aspect ratio.
In addition the projectors would provide large format display at a cost that is comparible to a single 50-55 inch flat panel (most good models). It would also provide 3x the resolution of 720p and even 34% more overall resolution than 1080p.
Also at 2.76 million pixels per frame fps performance should be good with most games (compared to 6.2 million pixels using 1920x1080x3).
If anyone has any opinions or actual experience using this projector (or others) in portrait mode please share.

Portrait mode does not work for LCD monitors due to the polarisation filters inside the LCD shutter glasses not matching the natural polarisation of the LCD display.
The various reviews on the web say the portrait mode is disabled when using 3D vision surround for this reason.
DLP projectors, being not polarised should work, but I do not know if the 3D vision surround drivers have an exception to allow it.

I'll be interested in your findings Baragon, I'd agree that 2x480 isn't really enough for 3DVS @ 5760x1080p for even moderately demanding games but its impressive technology nonetheless. I'm also not completely convinced or confident that adding a 3rd or 4th 480 will help matters much at all and certainly adds another layer of dependency on SLI driver scaling and compatibility. I think cutting resolution by a bit over half with your planned set-up will do wonders for performance, especially with 3DVS' heavy demands on VRAM and bandwidth.

Yep that's correct about the polarization in portrait, anyone with 3D Vision LCD can turn their head 90 degrees with a game running in 3D and see the screen almost completely darkens as a result. Also, none of the current panels support portrait mode in either software or physically as the stands are fixed in landscape.

Yep that's correct about the polarization in portrait, anyone with 3D Vision LCD can turn their head 90 degrees with a game running in 3D and see the screen almost completely darkens as a result. Also, none of the current panels support portrait mode in either software or physically as the stands are fixed in landscape.
i searched running projectors in portrait- unfortunately most users say it will not work with most projectors- they are designed for a certain air flow- turning them on their side will kill lots of expensive bulbs. this is most unfortunate- i was hoping the do the same thing.

I cant see how portrait position would affect airflow. The projectors should not even be close to each other, they would be centered on each projected area - that puts them feet apart. Why would portrait matter for airflow?

Hmm. I wonder if you could do this using the Acer h5360 3D Projector with DLP LINK glasses... they should all be sending out the same sync signal. Switching the eyes for DLP LINK could also be complicated as the 3 projectors might not be sync'd to the same eye. If one of the screens is inside out, you'd have to switch eyes for that one projector. Being that you can really only use the remote to change it, you'de have to make the others not see the signal. That's if you're using DLP LINK glasses... which I'd prefer any day.
The aspect ration of a 720p screen on it's side with 3 projectors would be 1.6875. 16x9 is 1.7777. That's not THAT far off. Could be a very interesting solution if it would work and you could get the screens aligned. The gears in my brain are turning... this could be a very dangerous project.

This would also be a great option for getting all the resolution you can get out of those 1080p bluray 3d movies....sure, it's overkill... but if it somehow worked... you've got your 1080p (and then some) 3d projector!

It might be a PITA to set up and make seamless initially but I'd imagine that if you've got a solid framework to keep the projectors in place it's a real set-it-and-forget-it kind of thing. 2160x1280 without bezels, in a 9'+ screen size, in 3D.....that is the closest we're going to get to (finally) having a 30" 3D monitor at 2560x1600 on the market. The aspect ratio of that is between 16:9 and 16:10, to boot, so the display will feel right at home as a normal PC monitor rather than being the freakishly skinny display 3D Vision Surround normally produces.

I'm dreaming to have 2xH5360 side by side on a curved screen but it seems 3d vision surround do not support this type of setup...Brightness and color can issue with normal lamps in multi projector setup at least over the time. LED mod would be nice.

That's insanely hard ... You can look at that prototype NEC display, thats LED DLP, seamless multi projection is insanely hard.. please do a search I don't know links, saw the biggest pictures of it over avsforum.

Seeing as we won't be getting true 120hz 1080p@60 3D projector for a long time (only HDMI 1.4 ones it seems) I too see myself trying this down the road.
How do I use this setup for other video devices like digital cable, Ps3 and 360? It would be stupid to spend all this money and have a massive screen only to have to use something else for console gaming and TV watching. Off the top of my head, the only solution for this would be to buy a 4th projector (2D 1080p) and use it for everything else. Or I guess one could use an HDMI capture card to send thesignal to the computer and then scale it on 3 screens...

Can you even use 3d vision surround in portrait mode? That would be cool for monitors as well. Would better fill your vision.

In addition the projectors would provide large format display at a cost that is comparible to a single 50-55 inch flat panel (most good models). It would also provide 3x the resolution of 720p and even 34% more overall resolution than 1080p.
Also at 2.76 million pixels per frame fps performance should be good with most games (compared to 6.2 million pixels using 1920x1080x3).
If anyone has any opinions or actual experience using this projector (or others) in portrait mode please share.

The various reviews on the web say the portrait mode is disabled when using 3D vision surround for this reason.
DLP projectors, being not polarised should work, but I do not know if the 3D vision surround drivers have an exception to allow it.

Yep that's correct about the polarization in portrait, anyone with 3D Vision LCD can turn their head 90 degrees with a game running in 3D and see the screen almost completely darkens as a result. Also, none of the current panels support portrait mode in either software or physically as the stands are fixed in landscape.

The aspect ration of a 720p screen on it's side with 3 projectors would be 1.6875. 16x9 is 1.7777. That's not THAT far off. Could be a very interesting solution if it would work and you could get the screens aligned. The gears in my brain are turning... this could be a very dangerous project.
I already have the h5360... another video card and 2 more projectors would run me about 1200... another 80 for the extra 2 projector mounts... I've spent more money on crazier things. The question is... do I have a room in my house big enough to support this insanity?

In practice though its a real pain in the butt to align the projectors to be seamless. Ive done it at 3 tradeshows and its a challenge.
I am not aware of air flow problems since you space out the projectors a few feet a part, you dont stack them on top of each other.

Now I'm really thinking about doing this. It might be a PITA to set up and make seamless initially but I'd imagine that if you've got a solid framework to keep the projectors in place it's a real set-it-and-forget-it kind of thing. 2160x1280 without bezels, in a 9'+ screen size, in 3D.....that is the closest we're going to get to (finally) having a 30" 3D monitor at 2560x1600 on the market. The aspect ratio of that is between 16:9 and 16:10, to boot, so the display will feel right at home as a normal PC monitor rather than being the freakishly skinny display 3D Vision Surround normally produces.

How do I use this setup for other video devices like digital cable, Ps3 and 360? It would be stupid to spend all this money and have a massive screen only to have to use something else for console gaming and TV watching. Off the top of my head, the only solution for this would be to buy a 4th projector (2D 1080p) and use it for everything else. Or I guess one could use an HDMI capture card to send thesignal to the computer and then scale it on 3 screens...
