Don't know if anyone else is watching the PS4 launch, looks quite interesting, 8GB of GDDR5 ram, rather exotic. One thing that is depressing however is the lack of any mention of 3D over the entire 2 hour conference. Considering that all new console games will likely be dx11 (and therefore by assumption all cross platform games on the PC), and that for the time being Dx11 games can not be modded to work in 3D, could this spell the end of big games in 3D?
Pretty disappointing... But on a small plus side, I got to see a video of watch dogs. WOW!
What do you guys think. Is 3D gaming in trouble for this generation?

I'm sure Helix will work something out eventually.
Also its not like every Dx11 game is totally broken in 3D, alot of them work great.
Also did I read that right? 8GB of VRAM?
Its too soon to say. Just because games cant have shaders rewritten/reinjected doesnt mean a renderer cant be made to have support for games by individual "profiles". Tridef has better on average compatibility then 3d vision but Helix pretty much did more games then tridef supports at that level of compatibility not mention "3d vision supported games". All I'm saying is wouldnt surprise me if nvidia doesnt work on its renderer that some one else may take over whether something being worked on the rift/tridef/whatever.

They made evolution from PS3 with focus on easy interaction between users and integration in media services. Not bad, but for me it was disappointing they didnt move further. What next gen consoles truely need - lightweight HMD with huge FoV similar to Oculus Rift, and controller like Razor Naga to get along with it. Then devs would develop games specifically for immersive VR environment.
I was watching presentation in my HMZ-T1 and new Killzone looked fantastic in it. But when I imagined how it COULD look in full FoV, full 3D, when you really feel inside... i could only shake my head about lost potential from Sony

There wasn't mention of a lot of things at the PS4 event. No mention of 4k either, even though though the games were presented on a 4k projector and looked 4k at least to an AVS Forum reporter sitting in the front row. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1459305/official-avs-coverage-of-sony-ps4-launch-event/60
I don't see much of a reason for Sony to hype 3D right now. I'd expect them to at some time say "of course it does 3D." Hopefully better and more frequently than PS3 games, but I doubt they'd move backwards.

4K is definitely not possible. It takes 4x more video card performance than 1080p which is insane. Its more pixels then a 3 monitor setup.
Its probably 1080P @ 60fps which is pretty good considering DMC on consoles was 720p@30fps.

8gb of unified top scpec ram... Yes you did hear right, the PS3 actually has all our PCs beaten on one feature. :-)

I pray that you're right eqzitara, I was just disappointed as was hoping for a "Every game will support 3D" a little like how xbox 360 stated "all games will support HD" to help push the tech. If sony doesn't do that to help its ailing TV business, surely no one will.

Killzone looked simply stunning on PS4. Art design, graphics, animation. One thing I loved about most of the games shown was the stunning light effects. Lets wait for real examples being played, but killzone, with that insane LOD, detail, particle effects, fire, smoke, lighting and level of detail would, i imagine, grind most peoples computers to a standstill.
Next gen games do seem to up the ante, which is fantastic for PC gamers imo. Hopefully well see more lush environments like the witcher 2 or arkham asylum with even more realistic physics and lighting. Did anyone see the racing game shown? Wow, that made dirt 3 look ugly.

PS4 is looking really good, UE4, Square Enix and Capcom demos looked stunning, and Killzone was mindblowing.
I still have hope for 3d support, like Airion said, the lack of 4K specifics shows that there' stuff left to talk about. For the first time in years I watched a 2 hour Sony conference and I almost didn't notice it, there was so much stuff to show and explain, it's quite obvious Sony was only giving us a quick look.
I love my Vita so local network PS4 remote play is amazing, and FINALLY we get hibernation on consoles, now that all games use checkpoints instead of quicksaves, I'm tired of shutting down my console without being able to save my game.
Still, after watching KZ and all, I asked myself if I could go back to 2d, and I'm not so sure, everytime I play a 2d game (mostly on Vita lol) I keep saying "wow this would look so much better on 3d!", so I don't know.
Still, until Sony gives a clear answer about 3d on PS4, I still have hope.
...Killzone was mindblowing...until Sony gives a clear answer about 3d on PS4, I still have hope.
To be honest, if Kill Zone graphics look like that on the PS4, and with a steady FPS, then we really have reached a point where extra graphical horsepower is superfluous, as pretty much any art style and designing will be possible other then 100% photo realistic. Other forms of progression will then have to be looked at to make the game more immersive, e.g. Physics, 3D, VR etc. So even if 3D quietens down for the next generation "BOO" I would still wager it will be the next logical big step at some point soon, similar to the revolution polygons brought to gaming.
With steam layoff's of its "console" dept, the whole PC/console thing looks unlikely right now to help push OR and VR headsets (and by its nature, 3D.)
But can you imagine playing Killzone with an OR, or that driving sim, where its proper first person... oh boy... wow. Using a Kinect 2.0 to allow you to do up your seatbelt by hand, that could be very very immersive.
If any of you guys haven't seen, check out this Video and tell me that this isn't next gen + Amazing art design + simply mind blowing light effects. Maybe the real game wont look like this, but we can hope!

Damned shame this will never see the light of day on PC.

People keep blurting this out, but its totally not true. Its laughably false to me actually. Do games look like the Killzone 2 trailer yet? Or Final Fantasy? Does smoke look thick and defined and last for more than 1.2 seconds? Hell, we can't even render grass in Arma 2 far enough so that you can hide in it from another person more than 20 meters away because it stops rendering at short distances. Were not even remotely close to superfluous(aka "more than enough") graphics. Not for all purposes anyway.

@Liberine..
And so it begins, same ****** hype all over and people falling for it like allways.
We know the specs and in's NOT very impressive at all, okey we know how console works so the devs can squezee a lot out of them as it's more stremlined then Pc but no optimization in the world can change the fact that it's not that powefull we all wants it to be, even Crytek said the other day that it will NOT impress a pc gamer much so there we have it!
So please stop with all this nonsense and think for a moment, this is the same **** all over again all hype with no realtime gameplay, only CGI SAME AS ALLWAYS!!
So +1 to Libertine it's as simple as that even we want so much more it wont happen!

As you know, RAM speed is not all that significant in terms of affecting performance. But at least this generation won't be starved for RAM.

mmm, ok, but I know that many people disagree with you, including editors at many review sites, inc. IGN, and pretty much every console guy out there. I love graphics, I love the best graphics and in 3D. But, games like metro 2033, wither 2 show that so much can be done graphically but it's simply often not exploited. In my opinion the main thing that is holding back graphics is artistic direction, not brute force.
For example, check out games like Pysconauts, that game is simply stunning despite having technically weak graphics. Where as I personally find Crysis 2 rather ugly, despite its technical marvel.
Also, check out polls, research data. The average gamer finds the current generation graphics perfectly acceptable, and it's not on most peoples "want" list. Greater AI and physics is something touted by many magazines and their respective user comments. So in that sense, better graphics are "superfluous" in my opinion based on what the average gamer would want to see in improvements in game quality. Games can always use extra graphics processing to look more and more like reality, but I don't play games to emulate reality, I play them for a little escapism and entertainment. Art design, for me, can have a much huger impact on visual quality then trying to emulate the real world. That and great physics, because it's always fun to blow **** up ;-)

Seriously... I love the community here, but I hate this PC IS GOD mentality.. grow up. I don't play consoles, I own an xbox 360 for party games when friends are over on the kinnect, but I simply don't find them immersive enough. But ****** hype? Ergh... why not get exited and create hype over new technology, it helps sales, and therefore helps speed up the process of technological improvement. WIN for us.
And not impressive specs? 8 GB unified GDDR5 ram is better then what I got, but I know that's not the biggest thing. But come on, have you seen what an xbox and PS3 can do?
NO, it's not better then PC, obviously, but I'm always amazed at what they pull of on 7 YEAR OLD HARDWARE! lol... come on, it's really rather impressive. I would love to see what a similarly speced PC can do. Many games on my old laptop would DIE at anything even close to xbox 360 settings, and it had a better GPU and CPU then the xbox...
And CGI video? ...ok, that's just not true. It's in-engine renders (on a PC obviously) but that is the target graphics. Will it look like that when it gets released on PS4? only time will tell, but considering what games can look like on a PS3 3 now... I believe it will look something pretty similar to the videos shown.
As for what Crytek saying that this generation will not be much... I'm sorry, but I trust Tim Sweeny's opinion (EPIC, e.g. unreal engine) far more then Crytek's, and he is far more optimistic. Mark Rain has even tweeted his unreserved excitement about the PS4. Will I buy one? No, I can experience the best graphical quality on PC (although I do miss out on those amazing exclusives) but the best graphics on PC comes at an incredible cost. And again about the hype, I'm sorry but every console (other then the PS2) in my eyes has lived up to ALL the hype around it. New consoles really does usher in a new wave of incredibly good looking games for 95% of all gamers.
Just to make clear for anyone not clear why I stated that after this gen "increases in graphics would be superflous" I really mean if everything else stays at status quo. Aka, no 3D, no VR, no decent pysics... the game could look like reality, but to me would not increase immersion by that much. Decent 3D VR however would. Which was why I made the point, as a point of encouragement that at some point in the future 3D will surely have to take on, even if that point in time is not now!
Anyway, thanks for the misinformation about it all being CGI Mikeloader, and the fact that what i'm saying is nonsense and to stop spreading it around... Pot calling the kettle black, and with that sort of attitude we really create a nice warm bubbly feeling around here.

Dident mean to come of like that and stamp on you toes mate.
I really hope for monster hardware but it's just that I have been so disapointed before about the hype and no delivery.
All the talk about deliver Toy Story graphics and we all sook it up but when the console comes out it's nowhere near the quality they said.
But I will not write it down yet and well maybe this time will be different :)
Many things look good thou, more pc like this time so of course I am hyped or feel the hype starts building again hehe.. well time will tell mate!!

46" Samsung ES7500 3DTV (checkerboard, high FOV as desktop monitor, highly recommend!) - Metro 2033 3D PNG screens - Metro LL filter realism mod - Flugan's Deus Ex:HR Depth changers - Nvidia tech support online form - Nvidia support: 1-800-797-6530
No, seems to be 8GB of system RAM, but GDDR5 type.
