Glasses, not exactly, but you do need to have a 3D vision emitter (which usually comes with a set of 3D Vision glasses anyway). With the emitter, I can use the glasses that come with my projector instead of the regular 3D Vision glasses, but I usually just end up using the 3D Vision ones anyway because the projector glasses sometimes get out of sync, but if you're REALLY in a bind for $ and can find an emitter alone without the glasses for cheap, then you do have the option of going that route. Trust me, either way, you're way better off just ponying up and buying the kit and using the override, it's way better than just using 3D Play TV.

You do not need the Nvidia Glasses, you could use DLP Link Glasses. But you do need an emitter.
3D Vision will not activate on any display without an emitter.
There used to be an emitter emulator that you could use, but Nvidia changed their drivers so it's no longer possible. This happened when Nvidia began to include 3D Vision Drivers with the main Driver, I think it was 275.00. Prior to this, 3D Vision was a separate download and was not included in the main driver.
Edit: I see DJ-RK already answered, I was seeing if anyone revived the emulator. It remains broken.

By default, yeah, I think so, but then you can create custom resolutions in the Nvidia control panel.
Or, another thing is that if your video card has more than one output, you can plug your projector into a different output, and it will register under the original EDID.
For example, what I did was install the Acer EDID override while the projector was plugged into the HDMI output on my video card. Then, I used a HDMI - DVI adapter to plug the projector into the DVI output of the video card and when it installed the driver it was recognized as the default (BenQ) projector. I could then swap as necessary: plug it into the HDMI output to have it recognized as the Acer EDID or plug into the DVI output to recognize as a BenQ.
Mind you, I don't have to do that anymore because setting up custom resolutions is the better solution, but if that doesn't work out for you or is too complicated, you can always give this other method a shot.

Try using this version of the fix (i only update the wrapper to 1.2.19), edit the d3dx.ini and use this line to force the game to 60hz, if works you will able to play with 3DTV Play and your projector.
refresh_rate=60

Thanks DHR but I tried that a long time ago, it didn't work.
Do you know that you can use custom resolution utility(cru) and remove other resolutions. Ill attach my .bin file which i use for my projector and sony hmz for 3dtvplay. it removes all other resolutions and 120hz, leaves just 720p60hz so you can also use DSR with 3dtvplay.
download cru, make sure you've selected your projector and import that bin file. restart and you should be able to play. (file has .jps extension so i could upload it here. remove it and extract .bin file)

That's why TODAY i update the wrapper where the feature is suppose to work. The original fix was included with an old version of the wrapper where the feature was not working properly. Try again with the version i linked....of course may not work also with this new version of the wrapper.

Ok, I will try it out of interest but I have to first install the game again. I am now interested in this idea of using an EDID override in any case with my Optoma GT1080.
I'm playing on a BenQ HT1075 projector. I'm using an EDID override from a Acer 5360, so my PC thinks it's an actual 3D Vision certified device, and runs at 120hz and enables the frame sequential 3D display mode on my projector, rather than using frame packing/sbs. If you're not familiar at all with this type of setup, I highly encourage you to look into it.
I knew about that setup but I use a monitor with built-in emitter which was what I used for games before I got the projector so I would have to buy a separate emitter for that to work, I assume - can you have 2 emitters and does it work over HDMI? Is there any disadvantage with using an override apart from the 24hz which I don't use anyway?
@sammy123, thanks but I think that I tried something like that also, the game just ignored it.

Ignore what exactly? After you've removed all the other resolutions and refresh rates, the game will boot to that only available one. There is no other option and nothing to ignore.
Give it a shot at least if you really want to play the game. I just tried it again and it worked. Something funny did happen and first boot of the game after i applied that .bin didnt work. Game booted at correct resolution and HZ but red nvidia text said not compatible or something like that. I quit the game and enabled dsr 2.25(1080p) from nvidia control panel and second boot of the game enabled 3d. I dont know if it was because i enabled dsr but it still went to that 720p@60hz and 1080p dsr also worked.

The problem is the refresh rate, does DSR have any effect on it, anyway I am now looking at using an override if that is possible using a 2nd emitter, but thanks for the info.

Do you loose 1080p 24Hz with this edid? I need it for movies.
