580 performance in 3D ?
Hey folks.

I am building a new rig. I have one question though.

I will probably go for a 580 SLI. First i will get one and in 6 months the second one.

Here are my questions

1-) Is 580 alone a great card? would it be able to max upcoming games like Skyrim or BF3?

2-) Is 580 alone good for 1080p 3D gaming?

3-) How is the performance of 580 SLI in 2d and 3d gaming

4-) Would 2 580 SLIs outperform a 590?

Thank you.

Depend on game optimization, but it should be able to run all new games in 3D with High setting on 1080p @ 40FPS~ (Verry high @ 15 to 20 FPS~)
2-) Is 580 alone good for 1080p 3D gaming?
Yes, thats what i use, my 580 is a little overcloacked from factory but i dont think this change a lot than a normal GTX580
3-) How is the performance of 580 SLI in 2d and 3d gaming
SLI of 580 is a monster of power, one of the best setup possible nowaday for less than 1000$ imo
4-) Would 2 580 SLIs outperform a 590?
2 GTX 580 Outperform a single GTX590 because 590 chip are a little gimped to keep the card not burning.

Well than thank you

580 it is :)

Hopefully I can get the second one in 6 months time as well

Also I am thinking of a maximum of 22 inch monitor.

1080p would be a good resolution right? Would I have to really go for 1600p?

One response, I'm wondering the same thing as I'm only a pair of Nvidia 3D glasses away from completing my 3D vision system.

Is a singal GTX 580 good enough to play 3D games on one 23" 120Hz 1920x1080p monitor? I was told that in order to get optimum 3D gaming one needed to maintain 60 FPS? I was also told that FPS drops in half from 2D gaming to 3D gaming....if that's true then if I'm getting 40 FPS in 2D gaming I'd only acheive 20 FPS in 3D gaming and it just dosen't seem to be enough?

Anyone with a GTX 580 who is 3D gaming please elaborate?

Usually you get slightly better than 1/2 the fps.
The video card is only part of the equation though, if your processors not up to it, you'll end up starving the video card.
A single 580 is probably fine for most people for 3D gaming, you may have to turn down som AA (although it's less of an issue in 3D) and perhaps not play on maximum settings to run at 60fps.

Thank you for that response. I currently have an i7 950 3.06Ghz over clocked to 3.8Ghz CPU. I know I'm not starving the video card. I'm going to find out soon enough on Father's Day when I'm getting my 3D glasses. I was curious if I really needed another GTX 580 to SLI or not. I'd like to keep it a single card solution as currently I'm maxed on game settings and AA. I wouldn't mind however turning down some settings to play Crysis 2 or upcoming Battlefield 3 in 3D as long as I can acheive 60 FPS for optimal performance.

A gtx 580 is enought to achieve 60fps in most games at high settings, minus a few of the absolute newest games really. Try one 580, and if that doesn't do it for ya, get the second.

You could try the gtx 570s. Not nearly as expensive as 580 sli, but a good deal faster than just one 580. That is unless money is no object with you... /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I'm running 570 sli(i7 950), and all the games I play are smooth. Black Ops at 60fps 16xaa maxed. Crysis2.. pssh not EVEN an issue, and bfbc2 50-60fps range 8xaa all in 3d. I'm sure this config will run BF3 without problems. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I doubt you would need the second 580 in the SLI config to enjoy 3D Vision. I'm having no problems gaming at 1920 x 1080 or 1680 x 1050 with a single EVGA GTX 260 SC 216 and AMD Phenom 2 X4.

Frame rates in the 30's on Borderlands GOTY haven't caused me any issues, and I played the Duke Forever demo with no issues. I can't speak to Crysis 2 as I haven't played it.

Bit off topic, Anyone know if Battlefield 3 is going to be 3D capable?

Witcher 2 was supposed to be 3D capable but it turns out it has major issues. Conversely, plenty of games (Tropico 3 comes to mind) aren't even listed on NVIDIA's compatibility list and yet work fine in 3D. Basically, you've got to wait for the game to come out to find out. Best to lay off the pre-orders when you go 3D.

I use a single 580 (rig in sig), and nearly all games can be played with everything maxed at 1920x1080 with the exception of AA. In some games I have to turn AA down like Metro 2033, but that's usually all I have to do to get smooth frames in 3D with max settings.

In GTA IV, aside from turning off the shadows which you have to do anyways (they have problems in 3D), all I really have to turn down is a bit of view distance and it's silky smooth.

Even Bad Company 2 plays acceptably at max settings in 3D.

Battlefield 3 will probably be the game that forces me to buy a second GTX 580, as long as it's 3D ready.

Biggest question on my mind, too, but I am willing to bet it will be considering Bad Company 2 is. DICE seems to be willing to work with Nvidia so I'd say the chances are good.

Skyrim, however, I'm worried about.

I am a bit, too. Bethesda hasn't said nice things about 3D even though their old engine worked exceptionally well in 3D mode.
