Stereoscopic setup with nvidia 3D vision
So i've been struggling to setup an Avid stereoscopic setup using the nvidia 3D vision glasses (which are supposed to work in media composer) without success for several weeks. So I turn myself to your help:

Here are the specifics:

-PC core i7 9Go Ram

-Windows Vista 64

-Medica Composer 4

-Quadro 4600 with latest quadro drivers v191 and usb 3D vision stereo drivers v191

-Nvidia 3D vision system

-Viewsonic 120Hz projector

With that setup I'm able to watch 3D files using the nvidia player or any other player compatible with the 3D vision. So I know my system is working '3D wise'

But when I get to media composer and I set the composer settings to stereo with side by side and checkerboard options all I get is a overlay of the right image over the left image without any 3D effect. It's like the glasses are not commuicating with the avid.

Can anybody who has experience with a similar setup tell me how they got it to work?

Thanks

kikourof, have you setup the drivers to enable Stereo and to use "Generic Active Stereo (with NVIDIA IR Emitter)"?

Also the projector's refresh rate has to be set at 120Hz before trying to run it, and if you have the 3D Vision drivers installed, you must be sure that they are turned off(!) as they are not needed for Quadro and Avid is using Quad Buffer OpenGL mode for stereo, right?

From what you explain the problem is that the glasses do not sync with what is being displayed, so basically you see the two frames overlayed with both eyes (the lens of the 3D Vision glasses remain clear all the time, right?). So this brings me back to the drivers not being correctly setup to use the NVIDIA IR Emitter from the Control Panel or you have activated the 3D Vision drivers and are not using the Quadro driver.

Thanks for getting back to me Bloody.

The refresh rate is correct at 120Hz and I've tried "Generic Active Stereo (with NVIDIA IR Emitter)" option with probably all the other possible options without any result.

I understand what you mean about the driver but I don't see how I could use anything other than the quadro driver, here are the install steps I followed:
-I installed first the quadro drivers from that link:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/Quadro_win7_w...91.66_whql.html
-then I added the extra driver for the quadro USB 3D Vision from that link:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/Quadro_3D_Vis...ver_191.00.html

And from what I understand the second is only an add-on to allow the USB IR emitter to function properly.

So can you be more specific as to how I can make sure that I don't have the driver setup in the wrong way.

Thanks for your help,

I've had some trouble with FX580 and FX1800 cards not syncing up with the glasses, but then it turned out to be a VBIOS problem that needed the cards to be updated, it was also suggested by Nvidia. But it won't hurt to see if your Quadro has an updated video BIOS it might help updating it. Also you might want to try with another Quadro card (other model) if you can manage to get one for a bit to be sure the problem is withing the card you have or not.

That is great info, thank you, do you know where I can find the vbios updates for the quadros?

It depends on who the vendor is, did you buy the card as a part of a workstation PC - HP, Dell etc. or separately and it is branded like PNY for instance?

I bought it on ebay. It does not say PNY on the card, just nvidia.

Download and run GPU-Z: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1698/...U-Z_v0.3.7.html

And then post a screenshot of the main screen of the app here with the specs of the card...

There is newer BIOS than what you currently have, you can try updating it to this one: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/7464/NV...768.061215.html to see if it will help resolve the issue you are having.

Thanks for the tip Bloody.

So I went ahead to upgrade the bios of the card, all went successfully.
But I would still get no results in driving my programs in 3D.

I asked a friend to come with his 4800 card instead and let me have a try with it.
Then it all worked... bummer.

So it's really the Quadro 4600 that does not seem to be up to speed.
And yet it is supposed to work accordingly to Nvidia and to the software manufacturer.

Could it be a vbios version? Could anybody let me have access to a later vbios if they have one?

Thanks for any help on this cause I'm desperate to get my system to work and I really can't afford a quadro 4800 now that I have 4600.

Can you (or anyone else) confirm for sure that you have successfully used Nvidia 3D Vision with Avid Media Composer to have 3D monitoring in realtime via a Quadro card, 120hz monitor, nvidia IR emitter + glasses and current quadro + 3d vision drivers? If so, could you please post all relevant settings to accomplish this?

I have tried the following setup without success:

Vista 32-bit, Intel Q6600, Intel Mobo......
Quadro FX 580
Avid Media Composer 3.5
Current drivers (197.03 for the USB emitter, 197.90 for the Quadro FX 580)
Acer GD235HZ monitor set at 120hz refresh rate

Nvidia drivers settings:
under 3D settings: Manage 3D settings: Global Settings: 3D OpenGL Stereo - - Stereo enable=On and Stereo Display mode= Generaic active stereo with Nvidia IR emitter
under 3D settings: Manage 3D settings: Program Settings: Avid Media Composer Family - - Stereo enable=On and Stereo Display mode= Generaic active stereo with Nvidia IR emitter

AMC settings:
Full screen set to checkerboard (tried all settings)
Full screen monitor set to be the Acer GD235hz

When playing back 3D in full screen or a window in the Avid, no stereoscopic effect is realized. It alsways appears as an overlay.. The glasses never dim.

When using other applications in a window or full screen, the 3D effect automatically activates.

So, to repeat my initial question, can you confirm your statement which seems to imply that you had success setting up stereoscopic 3D viewing directly from the timeline in AMC using your friend's Quadro 4800?

Thank you,
RHKFilm
