Hi. I am running Ubuntu Linux with a nvidia quadro fx 3500. Currently I am using the proprietary nvidia driver package that Ubuntu installs for me. I think it is nvidia-glx-new or linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22.14-generic. However, the problem is that I can't activate stereo in Coot or PyMol (crystallography programs).
So far, I have added:
Option "Stereo" "3" to the "Device" section of my xorg.conf, but that didn't work.
I am wondering what do I have to do to rending stereo on my CRT monitor? Do I have to download a different driver than the one I currently have? I looked on nvidia's driver site and this is the closes think I found for a Linux driver for my graphics card:

I'm having a similar problem with Fedora 8 and my Crystaleyes glasses/emitter. I'm also trying to use pymol, although I've tested with vmd too. I can't figure out if the problem is with the driver, the hardware or the applications.
I'm running the latest nvidia driver and I've added the Stereo option to my Device section.
I'm frustrated with not knowing where to start troubleshooting the system since I can't figure out any way to tell whether one part or another is working. Anyone have suggestions?

Hi
I have a similar problem on 64-bit fedora 8 with a Quadro FX 4500, where i can't
get the stereo mode working in Amira (a 3d reconstruction prog).
Since i have access to an older system on which 3d Stereo works,
i have been able to ascertain that the CRT is OK.
The xorg.conf shouldn't be a problem because i mostly
copied it from the old system (Yeah, i also have Option "Stereo" "3" in the "Device" section of my xorg.conf)
So my question, too, is whether i have to download a particular driver,
or set an arcane option in some configuration file?
Small update:

nvidia has 3D Stereo Drivers to download,
but only for W******
Does anybody know if there are equivalent drivers
for linux?
You can get the drivers for nvidia for linux systems here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_archive.html
although it doesn't explicitly state they are for 3d stereo. i am going on the assumption that there are, seeing as i couldn't find the any other drivers.
You can enable the stereo by adding the line:
Option "Stereo" "3" (or "1" or "2") to the relevant section of your xorg.conf file. Use google for more details.
Currently, I have not had any success. I have encountered a problem. After following the steps from this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual
I reboot and get this black screen with a dialouge box saying "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode. Your screen and graphics could not be detected correctly..."
And I can't see to fix it. I think that for some reason, that ubuntu isn't detecting the driver that I just installed. I am about to try to go back to the restricted nvidia driver that ubuntu provides.
If anyone has had an luck or experience, Your help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I have also cross posted in another forum:

My stereo works now.
After installing the newest nvidia driver, stereo still didn't work.
So i went over the X log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) and found the message:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Stereo is incompatible with the Composite extension.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Disabling stereo.
So after i disabled Composite in the xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "off"
EndSection
Thanks so much. I'm glad we could help each other out. Hopefully other people who have similar problems will find this post helpful too.
I figured out what my problem with the dialouge screen was. I was just being stupid. After I modified the xorg.conf. I installed the new nvidia driver, however the driver asked if I wanted to use my current xorg.conf file or have it make a new one for me. I told it to make a new one. That was my stupid mistake. After that, it works fine.
Then I was able to turn off the Composite with the modification to the "Extensions" section thanks to you, Jody.
