Is this for playing 3D games?

3D games fall into two categories.
- Games that have built in resolution/refresh rate
- Games that only have resolution selection, use the desktop refresh rate.

In the case of 3DTV Play, when you have configured it to be on, the 3D 1280x720@60Hz replaces the 2D 1280x720@720 mode. 3D 1920x1080@24 does not replaced the 2D version.

So to play games at 720p60, you generally can just switch the game to the resolution and it works since you are likely running your desktop at 60Hz and it will trigger 3D.

To play games at1080p24, you have to either change the refresh rate in the game to 24Hz (if available), or switch your windows desktop to an HD 3D mode of 1920x1080 at 24Hz such that the game inherits the 24Hz refresh rate.

Write back if this doesnt make sense.

Thanks Andrew. I have the Sammy PS50C680 and the picture is great in 2D mode. When I select the 3D mode on the TV the blacks are very grainy, the pixels changing between all the colours rapidly. Is there a solution to this? It looks horrible, almost unplayable in 3D mode to be honest.

TV quality is all handled by the TV manufacturer.

You're seeing "dithering", a type of video noise. There's no way to get rid of it, but it's dimimished when you put on your shutter glasses. Samsung knows about this and claims they decreased this artifact in the 2011 3DTVs.
