bought a pair of JBL 305 active speakers for my "studio"
tested them on my uncles place. for 105€/piece they are a steal.
I though i should just mention.

Before I bought the Logitech Z906, I was considering getting 4 of those + central speaker (or just another JBL) + subwoofer a year and a half ago, but then I as full of doubts:
- Each one of them has a power connection, power button and volume slider.
- Can't use an amplifier because they are active speakers.
- How the hell do I connect and control (the volume) all of that in an easy way?
Option 2 was getting separate passive speakers and an amp, but I would have had to deal with the known displayport monitor + HDMI sound bullshit.
In the end I just got a Sound Blaster Z (sound card) and the Logitech Z906. A lot cheaper than those two other options, but I wonder how much quality I'm missing. Still a lot better than my old Z506.

the volume adjustment on the speaker is an adjustment that you use to fit the speaker to your system.
You turn the source up and the preamplifier to max and adjust the gain to your liking of max volume, or the maximum before there is distortion in the sound.
basicly you controll the audio volume from the preamp.
Im quite shure these play in a different ball park than any logitech product.
I have a surround system with chorus speakers costing about from 300-500 a piece and with quick test session
i loved the sound of these. great wide stereo image and even bass accross the bandwith.
Buy from thomann a pair and test. it´s 210 and no postage. you have a 30 days window to return if you don´t like them.

If you've never watched this guy, he does decent reviews giving personal opinions vs fact based banter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOySstGCMRg
He did this one a month ago, showing an interesting in-line audio adjuster with some awesome PC software that allows quite a few type of adjustments. It's not top of the line type of stuff, but is feature rich.

For a desktop volume adjuster, this could be an answer

Something like the Soundblaster Omni could also be used for desktop volume control.

The XBox 360 Media remote has worked for years with Windows Media Center and Media Player.
I would think that by now, someone has made a Bluetooth remote that works with the PC master volume.
I wouldn't recommend an IR version, due to Nvidia's emitter interfering.
The S.M.S.L. AD18 could be a good option for anyone not using surround. It has a lot of input options and supports a subwoofer as well.
It's also a good alternative to a sound bar for anyone's TV.

But where they might be worth it, is if you have limited space.

Forgot to report back. The jbl’s were awsome. Quite deep base without any peaks on the bandwidth.
Though i only use them with my studio, not gaming.

Just be aware that active speakers can create ground loops and if using active speakers you should really be using an audio interface with balanced outputs.
