Blue Screen of Death & nv4_disp.dll 3D and flight sims
My system:
Dell XPS600 3.0GHz Pentium D830
2GB DDR2 SDRAM, Windows XP Professional Media Center
256MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 Graphics Card (just one card, not dual)
Dell 2005FPW 19" flat screen LCD monitor
Serial ATA RAID 0 With Dual 250GB Hard Drives
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, PCIw/Dolby Digital EX, IEEE1394 7.1 channel, THX cert.
Eyecessories 3-D Wasp Clip-on Stereo Glasses
I downloaded and installed both the Nvidia 91.31 Forceware and 91.31 Stereo drivers for my specific system. (XP Pro Media Center). No problem with the install.
Initially, while working in the GeForce 6800 stereo properties box, (Wasp3D glasses were on) I was seeing what I considered excellent stereo, especially in the “Stereo Setup & Test section. Then, after sliding the resolution bar from 640x480 up to the maximum 1600x900 and running the test again, I was really astounded. That Nvidia test screen is mesmerizing.
So, I figured I was all set and the Eyecessories’ glasses were going to do fine in both my FS2004 and FSX. I tried using CTRL+T to toggle the stereo but there was some conflict with MS Internet Explorer 7 “tabs”, so I changed to CTRL+F12.
After starting FS2004 (FS9), I was disappointed that I did not see it in stereo, even after toggling several times. I went back to the GeForce test screen and the stereo was still working, except that the resolution had dropped back down to 640x480. Is that supposed to happen? At this point I also visited several websites with 3D pictures and the stereo effect was fine.
I then went back to FS9 and after getting the initial screen, my computer crashed with a blue screen crash (BSOD). Reading the BSOD I saw it was caused by "nv4_disp.dll, page fault in nonpaged area.”
After restart, I again checked out the GeForce properties test screen, which worked, though again at 640x480 resolution. I found and downloaded another “nv4_disp.dll” which I installed in the properNvidia stereo driver folder. Tried FS4 again and got another BSOD. I downloaded another 91.31 stereo driver from Nvidia, removed the original and installed the new one. It changed nothing…still getting that darned blue screen of death every time.
Went back to the GeForce properties in Stereo Properties box and tried the test again. Got an immediate BSOD. Since then, BSOD every time!
I apologize for this lengthy discourse, but have you or perhaps anyone else in this forum heard of similar problems? Perhaps there is a better stereo driver than 91.31? I know it is not the Eyecessories’ glasses and I never had any prior BSOD’s like this.
I sure hope someone can help me with this situation. I have never had any prior problems with drivers and have relied on Nvidia for all my graphics needs. PM’s are happily accepted.

I use shutter glasses but hope I can help anyway.
A. I think the BSOD and nv4_disp.dll error indicates a driver error. Try reinstalling the drivers using the guide below.
B. Try to use a lower resulotion (1024*xxx)
C. the resolution slider allways moves to 640*480, never mind - let it be. Mine does that too.
D. In Nvidia control panel - Stereo properties - set the Stereo Enable Mode on Enabled
E. Try running the AquaMark3 bench it works: http://downloads.guru3d.com to confirm that 3D works.
Guide to installing new video drivers:
1. disconnect from net.
2. disable antivirus
3. uninstall current video driver (remove Nvidia from add/remove programs in controlpanel).
4. reboot
5. as the reboot comes, after the quick memory test/HD recognition, hit F8 and enter safe mode.
6. Win XP safe mode will autodetect new hardward and ask to install driver. Cancel.
7. run Driver Cleaner Pro (www.drivercleaner.net) with filter for Nvidia (and ATI).
8. quit and repeat step 4 and 5.
9. install new video driver 91.31 (not 3D).
10. reboot.
11. start antivirus and connect to net (reboot if nessesary). This is the best way to completely remove an old driver and install a new.
12. install DirectX (www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html)
13. install overclock tool Coolbits (www.laptopvideo2go.com/nvtweak) (not needed unless OCing).
14. install monitor driver
15. reboot.
16. install Nvidia stereo/3D driver 91.31.
17. reboot.
18. start - controlpanel - Nvidia control panel - view - use classic nvidia controlpanel - ok - close control panel window
19. right click on quick launch icon - set up monitor resolution/refresh rate etc.
20. right click on quick lauch icon - launch Nvidia controlpanel
21. stereo properties - enable - (adjust Stereo Gamma Setting) - apply
22. medical test image - escape - yes
23. stereo properties - stereo setup & test - set Monitor size (19"), bits per pixel (32), Stereo refresh rate (120Hz) and Resolution (1024*768) - vink Always use stereo refresh rate - Set rate for all resolutions - Apply
24. Launch test application - escape - ok
25. Performance and quality settings - vertical sync - off - apply
26. (Clock Frequency Settings - Manual overclocking - Detect Optimal Frequencies - vink Fan allways on - vink Apply these settings at startup - Apply)
27. (Color correction - Select Color profile: Advanced mode - Adjust the curve - Apply - Ok)
28. exit Nvidia controlpanel
29. Play a game in 3D (adjust using Ctrl F4/F5 and Ctrl F6/F7).

I don't mind at all :) I got the non 3D instructions from JR1dist from www.mvktech.net
Yes separation and convergence.
These instructions works for me with 91.31 and 93.71.
Edit: maybe You should add what to do if it is anaglyph or if it is SLI or Duo Core?
I don't have that.

Do you mind if I post them on MTBS3D?
Only thing I'm wondering is you meant F3/F4 and F5/F6 for separation and convergence?
Again, awesome detailed explanation, very well written.

Yes separation and convergence.
These instructions works for me with 91.31 and 93.71.
Edit: maybe You should add what to do if it is anaglyph or if it is SLI or Duo Core?
I don't have that.
