Hey everyone,
I know this is totally off topic and a bit of a long shot, but I'm planning a trip to a few of the stans in September/October, and thought I'd put feelers out to see if anyone lives in that region and wants to meet up? I'm thinking Pakistan, Kyrgzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Alternatively, if you've had any experience travelling those regions, feel free to offer advice/suggestions!

If you are into museums and historical sites, I'd recommend doing some research and making a list of what you'd like to see before it gets looted/destroyed and lost forever.
Then prioritize by chances of something happening to it, factored by your desire to see it, factored by regional travel risks.

are you sure you wanna travel there at this time? Especially Pakistan? VERY DANGEROUS. What is your background religion? Pakistan is intimately tied to many terrorist groups, and a safe haven for them. Don't wanna see a story (or video) of someone getting their head hacked off or worse. If you do go, then you need to do TONS of research to make sure you aren't in the wrong area...

Thanks for the concern. Pakistan seems reasonably safe in the areas that I'm thinking of going to though, so while I'll be cautious, I don't think the danger is too high.

Hey Pirateguybrush,
As Conan said, the question whether or not to travel to some of the "Stan"-countries depends a bit on your personal background. I work in Foreign Relations and was just consulting very quickly some advices from Foreign Ministries of different countries and I would highly discourage you to go to Pakistan. (UK Foreign Ministry writes: "There is a high threat from terrorism, kidnap and sectarian violence throughout Pakistan."). I am linking the UK Foreign Ministry for further research, as we write here in English https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/pakistan. But other countries (especially within the EU) will have similar advices)
Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are risky countries, especially Uzbekistan, but an adventurous restrained tourist might like the thrill. ;) Kazakhstan is safe. Other "Stan"-countries like Turkmenistan or Tadschikistan might also be interesting to visit. Afganisthan, I don't have to comment.
This sounds overall as a cool trip. Have fun. I have never been myself to those countries and would also love to see some to make own pictures about culture and people.

I ended up having to cancel the Pakistan leg due to visa difficulties, unfortunately. Going ahead with the rest though, so if anyone has any suggestions I'm keen to hear them.

Hey everyone, I'm back. Incredible trip, I can really recommend checking out that part of the world. It's extremely cheap to visit, the people are really friendly, I had no concerns for my safety at any point, and I've seen some incredible things. If anyone's curious, here's a couple photos:

Wow, those pictures are beautiful. A lot of magnificent art throughout the area. I'll be honest that I never even considered the area as something I'd travel to but after your pictures I'm legitimately interested. Glad you had a great time.
