Full HD resolution per eye @ 60 hz with Optoma UHD 40 in 3D mode. Like with 3D Vision monitors you need the 3D Vision emitter but it only serves as license dongle for unlocking Generic CRT mode. You have to use DLP glasses with this projector.

FAQ for the Optoma 3D_XL Why does the 3D become inverted & how do I tell if it is correct? Each time the projector locks onto a 3D signal from the 3D-XL, the 3D sync has a 50/50 chance of being correct. This is easily remedied by changing the "3D-Sync" option in your projector's OSD menu. Some home cinema/entertainment models eg. HD67N can swap this even easier by pressing the "re-sync" button on the remote. The latest firmware for the 3D-XL added a feature to easily tell whether the 3D sync is correct. During 3D playback, put on your glasses and close your left eye. If you can see the HDMI LED on the front panel of the 3D-XL, you need to invert your projector's 3D sync option. http://arc.optomausa.com/support/3DExplained.aspx

This is amazing news! Thanks Paul!
I'm leaning towards the BenQ TK800 at the moment, for the extra lumens basically. I'm using a 90" 1.2 gain white diffuse screen (nothing special). Compared to my Asus pg278q 3d is darker but still on a good level. Even dark games like dead space 2 can be played with it. However it could be worth upgrading to a high contrast screen with higher gains. I will buy a sample of the elite screens cynegrey 5d to see if it's worth the money. (The sample only costs 6 Euro)

Thanks, a higher gain screen will definitely help. I had a sample from a german company "awater" of a silver 2.4 gain screen material. It made all the difference with my previous pj - optoma hd67n. The sample was as bright as my Xl2411z maybe even a bit brighter! A high gain screen wouldn't work with my current projector due to it's short throw nature, however it might work with the optoma uhd 40/50 since it doesn't have as short throw ratio as my BenQ.

Paul, how are you getting on with the projector now? Any lessons learnt or regrets? On prime day I nearly bought the BenQ TK800, it was down from £1195 to £950, but went back up at some point in the afternoon. Shame because it was a huge discount, but part of me is still holding back because it's early days, input lag is a bit high and I still have doubts about firmware and HMDI handshaking etc.

Actually buzzing is normal for 4K @ 60 hz mode due to the pixel shifting but the buzzing became louder and it was also present in 1080p @ 120hz where the buzzing should vanish completely. So I returned the projector and requested a replacement. The replaced one is working good till now but I only have 60 lamp hours till now. Let's see if this changes when reaching 100h lamp hours. I don't know if you generally have to throw away this projector after 100 hours or if I had a bad sample only. Overall when it works correctly this projector is really nice and the best what you can get for stereo 3D gaming now but as always there is no quality assurance by Optoma. Benq, Asus, Acer and all the other manufacturers. And as more money you spent for it the more you get pissed off by the lacking quality assurance. Maybe you do well in wating, but overall every new high-end product has it's own issues. This applies especially for niche markets like projectors and high-end 144hz gaming monitors. This will never change unless more people are willing to buy those products. For monitors most people still only buy 60hz monitors and for projectors the most people aren't interested because for daylight room conditions you have to spend more money for the screen as for the projector. Not everyone wants to darken the room / windows.

Thanks for the update, makes very interesting reading! I agree about them all having issues and I'm not expecting perfection. For example, I'm not expecting the so called light border issues to disappear, but that's a compromise I'm willing to accept. Also I don't expect the contrast ratios to improve much. I just don't want to buy one now then have a firmware update released next month that involves me having to send the projector back. I'm aware the UHD51 supports OTA firmware updates, but it's too expensive for me to justify, plus it has bad input lag. That's why I'm holding off, it's really close but just not quite there... I've waited this long so I can wait a little longer.

For those of you guys whose stuck with limited space but would like to get more immersion out of your experience I will share this prototype I made about 2 years ago for my monitor. Immersion is lost when you're reminded that you are sitting in a room. (That is why cinemas are darkened inside) So I build my Immersion Box 3000 to fit over me and my monitor. It was just some big advertisement cardboard I found at the back of a store. Sprayed it matte black and reinforced it with some round wood dowels. At the top I reinforced it with a thick angle structure I drilled two holes in for support of a towel I hung over the "entrance" of the box. It helped to enclose the box and prevented artificial light from entering. This inspired me to convert my guest room into a gaming room and get a PJ. I would really like to know what some of you guys did to darken your gaming environments? I was thinking to staple Velcro onto long dark curtains and hang it from the roof rather than paint the whole room black. So that if I had to move to another place that it would at least be more user friendly. What kind of paint or material for curtains did you use? All material I found seemed to be too reflective. As I sit here in front of this big screen I can see how the light from the screen is reflected onto my walls and roof.

The Vivitek 2288 sounds interesting. Unfortunately it's not available in Europe. Is it a 4x Pixel Shift projector like Optoma UHD 40/50 or a 2x pixel shifter? Also the option to enjoy HDR + 120hz sounds nice (this is not supported by Optoma UHD 40 - HDR is being disabled when enabling 120hz mode). Has it RGBRGB or RGBCYW wheel?

It's a 2x pixel shifter. All the earlier (and more expensive!) 4k XPR projectors use the 0.67DMD which has a 1440p res and shifts twice. I believe it has a RGBCYW wheel - I know you're not a fan of those. The optoma UHD550x had a firmware update (version c13) that enabled frame sequential 3d at 1080p. The optoma is actually otherwise pretty much the same as this Vivitek. Same colour wheel and same 0.67DMD. I've spent far too long reading about projectors today and generally the last few months! My head hurts so time to go and play dying light :-)
