It was a bug in 3DMigoto that only hit under certain circumstances (that I missed since I was playing with logging enabled). Should be fixed how: https://s3.amazonaws.com/DarkStarSword/3Dfix-The+Witness-0.2.zip Also fixed a few more things: - Underground reflections - Hold Q or middle mouse for a few puzzles that depend on the 2D perspective for objects to line up - Waterfalls (unbroke these) - Menu detection to disable UI adjustment - Recovered frame rate lost due to excessive copy operations in the previous version The auto mouse depth is working really well in this game... I don't want to spoil it but let's just say a bunch of interactions would be rather difficult in 3D without it.

Hello DarkStarSword, Thx a lot, it worked for me now ! Im in w10 64 bits, nvidia gtx 970 with update 361.75 with the game at Update v20160203. The only thing i saw that thickle my eyes was the reflection off the environnement over the sea, the mirror effect. The Q mapping for the 2d projection is a good idea ! I'm playing with a AZERTY keyboard, any idea how to remap mouvement button, for now its the arrow, but i would like to play with ZQSD, and thus Q is already mapped for your 2D projection. Thx for your help anyway !!

Looks great - thanks mate.

Thanks for testing everyone - the final fix is up on the blog: http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2016/02/the-witness.html - Fixed another reflection shader when the boat is summoned - Improved the reflection when the camera is tilted. Not quite perfect (none of the world-space adjustments have seemed 100% accurate), but much better than before.
The only thing i saw that thickle my eyes was the reflection off the environnement over the sea, the mirror effect.
Most of the reflections should be fine, but there is one place I know of where that happens where some poles are reflected in the distant water and shouldn't be - but it's like that in 2D as well, so not much I can do about it.

I must say, while I am mostly enjoying my time in The Witness, I am beginning to take a bit of an issue with the game's creator, who criticised 3D televisions on the forum as being silly after this fix was released, filtered some unrelated criticism of a particular puzzle that requires the player to wait for a whole hour to solve (it's not required to complete the game, only to 100% it) and blocked me. The game is still good and this shouldn't put anyone off buying it, but I'm somewhat less inclined to look at any of his future games after that rather negative experience.

I commented over on Steam after reading it - and I haven't seen his responses to you on twitter - but it seems like more of a misunderstanding then him being malicious towards you or anything.

This game can look pretty stunning in 3D.

I'm still baffled as to why he would resent having his game patched for 3D vision. Maybe he was concerned that playing the game in stereo 3D would exploit some puzzles? Anyways, I no longer have no interest in playing this game. I was already on the fence about whether or not to buy this due to the fact that the game reportedly doesn't have a musical score. Thank you so much for fixing this anyways.

Blow can be abrasive, and that's a shame he was an ass about 3D. But I loved Braid, and from all accounts I expect to enjoy this too. The screenshots look fantastic, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

Andrew Smith, programming for the witness is not happy with VR too, but because of VR allows cheating some puzzle https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/45fu74/i_am_jonathan_blow_game_development_person_ask_me/czxlyvl

When I get a Rift I will be interested to see how they handled certain things in VR - the mouse cursor and perspective puzzles in particular. There's a couple of puzzles in this game that are rendered on a transparent surface, like this one: The problem was, those puzzles rendered with the depth buffer set in read only mode, so when I added a stereo mouse cursor it would scan the depth buffer and line up on the background instead of the puzzle. My solution was to inject a new buffer and write the depth of those surfaces to it, then in the crosshair code I could check both buffers to work out where to position the cursor. I'm not sure if they have a stereo cursor in VR or not, but if they do I'd be interested to see how (or if) they solved that. Posting a screenshot of the any of the perspective puzzles would be a spoiler, so I won't do that since they were quite satisfying to solve (with one exception), but I also wonder how they made some of them work in VR - some of them require the camera to be in a specific position, but when it is in that position the perspective doesn't line up in 3D in either eye. I guess it must be because they haven't locked the camera position in VR and maybe allow for a bit more flexibility in the positioning.

Ran across a very interesting feature that has not been mentioned before. This is quite significant for us hackers and modders. I'm adding it here, because The Witness has had a bunch of recent updates that break the fix, and the "older-" branch was also recently deleted, so... There is a way to get older versions of *any* Steam game. I'm surprised I never heard of this- I expect you might be too. https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/611h5e/guide_how_to_download_older_versions_of_a_game_on/ The steamdb includes the older versions, there is just no UI to get them. So, you can follow those steps and find an older version that works. In this case, I experimented a little to be sure it worked, and I could fetch a working version of The Witness using: download_depot 210970 210971 3474964570397670460 That's the Feb1 version, which is not identical to the one I cleverly saved off for future use, but I tested it, and DarkStarSword's awesome fix still works on this version. Disclaimer: shit might break, game saves might be incompatible, might be killer bugs that were fixed. You know the drill. Best bet is still to make a backup of a working setup. Backup your game saves. Don't trust anyone. Except me of course.
