This game CAN be played with the latest 314.21 drivers, however one of three things will happen:
1. The game looks perfect (mostly) with the 3D image of Alice and proper placement of shadows on her.
2. Alice is displayed, however the shadows are fubar.
3. When you select the player name the game locks up.
For me the game worked fine after a default instal however after tweaking the in game Video settings (everything turned on) the game simply locked up upon selecting the player name. Finding and editing the 'AliceEngine.ini' file and setting "AllowNvidiaStereo3d=False" fixed the lockup but left the shadows on Alice (and in game) looking fubar. Exiting the game and changing "AllowNvidiaStereo3d=True" and "UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True" fixed the lockup AND the shadows.
If you have #1 above feel free to find 'AliceEngine.ini' and change it to 'read-only' in case you accidentally wander into the configuration screen and change a setting (or futz with the Nvidia profile).
EDIT: For anyone wanting to play this in 3D, install Nvidia 306.97 Drivers and all is good, even with all settings on max and with Chiz's fix found on helix mod (thanks Chiz).
Where those the highest revision you could get it to work with or was that just one you randomly tried, last ones you had? Just curious. I'm trying to get it going without having to install the drivers, One thing I noticed is that in Alice's directory it actually has all the PhysX dlls. I tried replacing them, with the newer ones and then Alice wouldn't run, gave me an error about not having the latest drivers ... and if I completely remove them it won't start.
where is that documented? is fraps reporting more than 60 fps?
if you hate tearing then you definitely wouldn't like adaptive vsync.
adaptive vsync disables vsync as soon as fps drop below the refresh rate (=> tearing).
Hey up Kingpin1, breaking news. While I am still 100% sure that adaptive vsync works on Nvidia 3D, you seem to be right about tearing. I never have problems with it (and certainly not with Alice), but Bioshock Infinite with adaptive vsync shows mild tearing when the frame rate drops. Think it might be a driver problem, have enabled normal vsync in this case.

mbloof got it to work on the latest drivers, just do as he said (I posted it back onto the front page). As for PhysX, I was playing with that up-todate, it was only all the other NVidia components that were rolled back to 306. I lost track, have you ever played this game in 3D before? It really is beautiful... Have to admit, as much as Bioshock is a fantastically detailed game, I am stating to wish I was 'in' Columbia via 3D. Tridef users are making me jealous right now, sounds like a solution is in the works.

... but ... but ... I don't want to do it his way. I want to do it my way! Lol. If I can't then I'll just do it his way, I guess. It's more just me messing around than anything. I'm not really even going to be playing it yet, playing Dishonored at the moment. I just like figuring sh-t out.
Don't you feel dirty? I can't believe you've been playing over in the 2D camp, you're going to catch something over there and it isn't going to be pretty I can tell you that right now.

It does feel a little bit like slumming it, even with the wonderful backdrop that is columbia. Those crazy 2D lot.
'3D is a gimmick'.
'Then why do we have two eyes numb-nuts!'
Latest drivers with my setup are crashing with 3D enabled as well. The game doesn't even get to the screen to select a save game, it just stops responding. If I disable 3D, I can play the game no problem completely maxed (even all the tweaks in NVidia control panel). I have some other games that need playing so I will shelve this one until I feel the need to roll back drivers or there is a fix.

Has a whole bunch of high resolution textures.
It's beyond the Physx drivers, well at least the Physx driver's folder, I ripped the ones out of the 306.97 driver package, renamed the installed Physx folder, and dropped the ripped one in it's place and it still crashed.

VERY GOOD WORK NVIDIA!!!
With drivers 332.21 the crashing goes away, and having "Enable Stereoscopic 3D" checked in NVIDIA Control Panel will allow the game to start with 3D enabled. It starts with PhysX on the CPU however, and at the player selection screen 3D Vision gets disabled. Then you can press the button on the IR emmitter and 3D Vision will be enabled again without crashing. When you select your player and hit "Continue Game" on the screen with Alice looking at you and the main menu for the selected player, PhysX gets to run on the GPU , but and at every point where the game loads new levels 3D Vision will be disabled and you have to press the IR emmitter button again to turn it back on.
STILL VERY ANNOYING but MUCH BETTER than the game crashing. Can you please do something about having to press the button to view 3D?

Built-in NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M, 2GB GDDR5.
I can confirm that this tips did it also on my machine.
System:
EA Origin downloaded game version
Windows 10 x64
Geforce 1060 GTX
driver version 382.33
My issue was the same: Freezing game right after the first time i pressed "Enter" at tehe beginning of the game.
I checked the AliceEngine.ini file and the values were
AllowNvidiaStereo3d=True
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
I connected the IR module of the nVision set with the computer and turned it on, but disabled it in the control panel.
I changed the value for "AllowNvidia..." to "False" and started the game: OK, but no 3D.
I changed all settings for the video card to "Off", PhysiX to "low". Then enabled the 3DVision set in the control panel. I'm not sure if i set the value for "AllowNvidia..." to True or False, but changed the ShaderOptimizer value to "False".
I started the game and i could see the menu Alice in 3D, but the game was only in 2D.
Then i changed back the value for the ShaderOptimizer back to "True" and AllowNvidia to "False":
AllowNvidiaStereo3d=False
UseMinimalNVIDIADriverShaderOptimization=True
and enabled all video card settings in the game except for 3dVision (left it Off) and PhysiX to "normal": The game runs nice and in 3D but Alice doesn't look good, some ghostery appeared, had to set the 3D depth to lowest value but then i got almost no effect.
I installed the heliX mod but no difference at all.
Then i disabled the dynamic shadows in the video card settings of the game and voila it looks astonishing :)

In Ureal Games that have the setting in their config file, if you do not set AllowNvidiaStereo3d=True, alt tabbing will cause the 3D stereo to turn off and the only way to turn it back on is to restart the game. So it is always a good idea to have that set to true.
I also was recently playing this game. The crashes were due to it not being able to properly handle discrepancies if the in-game and desktop resolution and refresh rate are not the same.
So I set my desktop resolution and refresh and then did the same for the game while 3D was turned off in the NVCP. Then I turned it back on in NVCP with zero issues.
edit: this worked a few weeks ago when I was playing it, I just tried firing it up and it locks up every time now.
