Releases April 1st for 799.99. Pre-orders start on Feb 29th.
Honestly, after the sticker shock with the Rift, I'm actually pretty excited about this. Not only do I consider the Vive a much more complete solution, but the Rift was going to cost me 670+ after shipping/tax. And I don't consider VR acceptable without high quality motion controls. There's a legit possibility the Rift + Touch would end up costing more for me.

too bad most of the Vive games look like shovelware... and that's not too surprising considering that developers have had very little time to work on Vive games. Hover Junkers, Arizona Sunshine, etc all look like 3.00 gear VR games that will be fun for a few hours max. The ONLY game I thought looked great on the Vive was Budget cuts, and that's also coming to the Rift with touch and 360 support as well.
The Rift has much better launch games, IMHO. Also, the Rift has games coming that have been in development for over 2 years. Unless you need roomscale right now, I'd go for the Rift, and wait for the Touch.
Now if Valve announced something exclusive....then I'd be excited.
I was personally more hyped for the Vive, and was REALLY looking forward to the Vive game showcase, because you would expect at least one freaking Valve game, but alas we got mostly shitty games with no atmosphere and depth.
Maybe Valve is waiting for the install base to grow, which in that case won't happen for a few years and Valve stated that it will NOT make exclusive games for the Vive, so I can't really see a point in getting the Vive right away.
I really like games that have exploration, atmosphere, etc in VR, and the Vive launch games are all the type of games I don't like. They are more like a tech showcase then real games, and how many stupid games can you have where you just stand in one spot and show shit all around you? Looks like they are not taking advantage of roomscale at all and mostly just focusing on 360 and teleporting instead.
I'm much more excited for luckys tale, Eve, Chronos, Edge of Nowwhere, etc on the Rift as they feel like real polished games and not tech demos.
Esper 2, Dead Secret, and a few other games on GearVR that I've experienced look better then any of the Vive stuff. Please show us some real games for the Vive!

Also, I don't have a problem with the price,as I put aside enough money too easily afford both Vive and Rift, but even so, I don't really see myself getting a Vive right away.

Guess it depends on your classification of real games. All of the major publications were blown away by those Vive games (like they've never been before). They may look like shovelware in screenshots, but that's not really the point. Something like AudioShield is one of the least inspiring looking games you'll ever see in screenshots. But people raved about how amazing it looked (and played) in VR.
I guess I'm just focused at it from my POV. I know what I really liked and didn't like with the DK2. VR with a joystick isn't appealing to me. I want racing/flight/space sims (with wheel/HOTAS) and games built around motion controls.
I also feel like anything that's released for Rift can/will be playable on Vive. Maybe Facebook funded games will be exclusive, but even that seems very difficult to enforce. We're just talking about a warping shader here. If there isn't official support, they'll be shader hacks from the community.
And for me, it's not even just room scale. I really loved Windlands for the DK2 (although it definitely needed motion controls), but even just standing and walking a little often meant fighting the camera and losing tracking. I don't need to be galloping around the room, I just need tracking for whatever I do without crying about exiting the camera FOV.
Anyways, they're priced comparably so it's decent from a competition POV (regardless of which side you fall on). They're close enough now that they'll be real pressure if one drops their price.
Ideally the Acer headset (that's going to be unveiled next week) is also a standalone unit. Probably isn't (since it's being unveiled at Mobile World Congress. Then again, so was Vive.) But the more competition, the better. Dream scenario is the Acer headset is also built off of Steam VR.

I just hope that VR has a trickle down affect that is positive for those of us that are stereoscopic gaming on a monitor/3D HDTV/ Projector.
As in, 3D Vision does not get abandoned and gains a second wind.
I'm much more into the exploration or third person type of games and find "games" that solely relying on motion controls like Job simulator, Surgeon simulator, or Hover Junkers, et, etc to be more gimmicks
For example, Soma is an amazing game, and feels like it was designed with VR in mind (even though it's not a VR game) Take Soma add motion controls and some 360 movement and thats basically my dream VR game . I want to explore space, caves, underwater, etc. I want to be transported into an immersive world and not just play a "game". I'm really interested in VR "experiences" rather then VR "arcade games".
Another thing is that pretty much all the Vive games will be coming to the Rift when touch releases as confirmed by developers, while the Rift will have exclusive games available only for the Rift and made by Oculus studios.
So the Rift has better optics (less SDE), it's more ergonomic, has exclusive games, better games (IMHO).
The Vive only has the edge in roomscale and motion controls at LAUNCH, and that's pretty much it. Donn't see a reason to own a Vive and the fact that the RIft will have the ability to play all VR games is a huge advantage, while the Vive will not be able to play all VR games.
The Rift exclusive games will only be available through Oculus home, so I don't see how they will work on the Vive. Ever?

Release date Aprils fools day?
Couldn't have picked up a better date. :))
Price wise it was to be expected. It indeed offers more hardware than Oculus so should cost more.
I won't be buying Vive or Rift until they hit the market and I can read others reviews. Don't want to be a guinea pig.

Im surprised people from 3d vision are excited for titles like Lucky's Tale, Chronos, Edge of Nowhere and other third person games. I can understand that non-3d gamers would have an interest in playing third person games in 3d, but we can do that already with 3d vision so I'm not interested at all in them.
For me virtual reality is first person, it's you being there. I don't want to be a floating camera behind a cartoony fox, I have 3d vision for that kind of experience and much better games than that in my Steam backlog.
There's a long strech to expect that Hover Junkers, The Gallery, Job Simulator and many others will work just as well on Oculus compared to Vive, Oculus has clearly stated that they are "a seated experience", they have never commited to room VR and they have yet to confirm that Oculus can do that properly. Also I expect Touch to arrive by the end of the year since they couldn't even commit to Q3 openly. So in the end Oculus owners will get a watered down version of those games.
I'm all for the Vive from day one, I know room vr and controllers are there and work from day one, no speculation and late add-ons. Hover Junkers looks great for room vr multiplayer action, The Gallery looks incredibly promising in terms of graphics and gameplay, a chair in a room greenwater is also one of the most promising launch titles and looks good, and I'll sure play a lot of Elite Dangerous too. Besides I'll get Job Simulator and Fantastic Contropation for free, so lots of stuff to keep me busy.

I don't know all the details but I'm in general a valve supporter at heart. They have done extensive VR research for a very long time. The Rift might be better but my money is on the vive.
The controls seem to be spot on in some demos I've seen.
I don't need convincing that Rift is better I'm excited about vive finally arriving.
To be properly honest I'm not a big fan of Facebook for any purpose. I don't think Facebook understands gamers very well. Nothing I've seen from Facebook have been targeted at gamers.
All the Facebook games are developed by third parties and not by Facebook.
I don't think Facebook has ever made a single game.

Soon enough you will be able to make VR games within VR in UE4 at least:

I have experience working on a Half-life mod involving mapmaking, modeling, animation, coding so I can do most of it myself. Counter-Strike was developed by a single guy where most of the community contibutions was classical maps like dust cobble and dust 2. All of them made by Dave Johnston.
Counter-Strike itself was made by Minh "Gooseman" Le and got to a playable state very quickly due to his experience making a singleplayer total conversion mod to Quake.

I was actually thinking how the source engine stacks up. I'd say UE4 and cryengine are the other options. Source engine have insanely good netcode. You can play Counter-Strike with 350ms ping and the experience is fluid and seamless. It has also one of the most advanced facial animation systems I have ever seen just look at a TF2 class movie sometime. Everything is done in-engine it's not pre-rendered at all. That just blows my mind. I primarly have experience with the HL1 engine which is a heavily modified Quake 1 engine and also there they we're early creating really sofisticated netcode.
Yahn Bernier is the brainchild behind the netcode. I was very young when I emailed him directly with some suggestions and got a reply.
I can't seem to find the mail anywhere I might have deleted it at some point as I felt it was expired or I'm not looking in the right spot.
That mail and a couple from Gabe N was very precious to me for a long time.
Just sent another mail to Gabe Newell.

I'm getting so pumped now for VR!
This is where I'm at:
I preordered the rift but I'm seriously torn between the rift and vive.
I like the idea of the vive being tied to steam and not having to put yet another gaming library program on (oculus store)
I think the vive has better hardware with the full room tracking and controllers bundled.
I also think it's reasonably priced, it's probably cheaper than the rift when you buy the controllers and extra emitter.
On the other hand:
I think the oculus rift will be the best purchase right now. It has games on release date that look more than just tech demos, unlike the vive.
How much will I really want to walk around my room after the novelty has worn off?
The vive maybe better in the long run as oculus rift full room tracking is far from proven and there's still no firm release date for the controllers.
It's software though that counts now and that's where oculus comes up trumps.
They both look impressive but I also don't want to end up with the equivalent of Betamax or HD-dvd this time next year!
Then there's this new asus or acer (can't remember now) VR too............
