Not buying 3d-vision, why? What's the dealbreaker?
  1 / 2
Hi all,

If you don't have 3d-vision and have decided not to get it, why not? What was the dealbreaker for you?

For me it's a combination of the price + I don't have Vista + it won't work with my projector, but if I had to choose just one reason, it's the projector issue. My projector only goes up to 85Hz and I need at least 100Hz for 3d-vision to work. Please tell me if I'm wrong about that. I suppose the 100Hz decision was made to make sure that noone complains about flicker but in the dark you see no flicker at 85Hz and I'm happy at 60. The projector works great in 3d with no ghosting with the old hardware setup so I know it can do it. I think there's some way to use blueline-code triggering to operate at a lower freq but I don't want to go that route.

So that's the dealbreaker for me. What is it for you?

I consider this as valuable input from 3d fans for future nvidia decisions to get more sales.

Edit: I suppose I could get the free trial version of Windows 7. That would help with the cost. I think it's supposed to be good for a year before you need to buy/upgrade with a license.

Once a monitor goes below 50hz it starts to become too flickery for comfort. Ergo 100hz is the lower barrier for 3D gaming (50hz for each eye).
Make sure that whatever you get in the future supports at least 100hz output and input (this last one is where LCD screens just had a break through).

I have nVidia 3D Vision and installed Vista for it.
It works with my Toshiba S 8 flawlessly at 85Hz ... ok i had to buy this reverse and delay dongle from a manufacturer in UK additionally (it removes ghosting and you can wear the glasses
right ,not upside down :-) ..... )
But nevertheless ,it works !

Hi,

This does not seem as simple as having any projector that can refresh at > 100 hz, but is seems to have to be the "Right" PJ.

I have spent x 2 weeks trying to get my bloody , new, VIEWSONIC PJD 6211 working with the Nvidia 3D soltion, with no success. Even though it is stated almost everywhere that it is compatabile "out of the box".

see thread.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=103934

so for me the deal breaker is definetely the PJ....as i've returned for refund both the PJ and Nvidia hardware.

Thanks Stepsbarto, I remember reading about something like that. I'll have to check into it someday but there's no hurry.

Wollan, I just wish I could show you my setup in action. I think you would agree with me that it's fine at 85Hz in the dark. 60Hz in the daytime has obvious flicker but darkness makes a big difference and it's even hard to notice sometimes in the dark. I use 60 Hz because there's color mismatch between eye-views at other freqs. My projector is a viewsonic-PJ503D by the way.

I think I figured out why you can't see the flicker in the dark. It's because your pupils are opened wider and so more light from the screen goes in compared to before and so more light on your retina means more of a "persistence of vision" effect that blinds you to the off cycle. It's like when you see the after image from a camera flash. Brighter means longer so you don't see the off cycle. Also I recently learned that your outer field of view is more sensitive to flicker so if the screen is the only source of light then outside of the screen you see dark when your LCD glass is either black or clear. Dark in all parts of the cycle means no flicker.

For me it's simply that i already have a dual projector rig and the iz3d monitor. Result of the good old days... I haven't seen anything come close to the experience with the projectors and the iz3d is surely good enough for occasionally play even though it ghosts a bit. Getting 3d-vision would only be sort of collecting stuffs and as is now a downgrade.
About Vista: I don't like it. Period! My aversion probably have roots in the way it's forced upon computerusers. Like that isn't enough it's probably the second worst op-system after WinME.....
Strangely though i have a lot more heart for Win7 so op-system shouldn't be any problem regarding 3d-vision.
I once gamed with a pair of e-d glasses on a crt-monitor so i can say that 120Hz is a good choice of update frequency. I'm almost able to see the flicker at 85Hz so i believe 120Hz would be comfortable. The old crt only made 85Hz at a decent resolution but unfortunately it started to ghost a bit too.

for me its price, the glasses and monitors are just to expensive of an investment for me for some thing that may or may not catch on. i am quiet happy with anaglyph right now even with the color loss (most modern games are using browns and greys too much any so whats the big loss). But if they ever come out with a more cost effect product in the future i will definitely look in to it.

The only reason someone wouldn't buy it is because they aren't a hardcore gamer.

And yes, I'll be the first to admit I'm a hardcore gamer nerd.

And you guys are missing out..! This 3d vision jazz is the sh*% !!

What stopped me initially? Availability and size of the current 120hz monitors.

I was a proud owner of a very decent Samsung 24" 245T LCD monitor. I still think the monitor is quite superior to the 2233RZ both in colour/contrast and size, however 3D Gaming is just too hard to ignore. It's a fantastic feature and really helps with the immersion.

Avaiability is another issue. For some reason NVIDIA has forgotten where Australia is on the map and we're still waiting for word of the technology, let alone a release date. People have not heard of 3D glasses over here except for extreme tech enthusiasts. Because of this the price of the whole setup (having to get a reseller to export it etc) cost me as much as my original 24"...

Seeing 3D become as common as video and soundcards will make it all worth it.

The only 2 reasons I haven't bought the 3d-vision is:

1. I own a 24" screen and wouldn't want to go down in size. And don't want to go up to 60" or so.

2. I have 3 gtx 280 and run them in SLI. So until there comes support for 3 and/or 4 way SLI, i probably wont' be getting it since that would be a total waste of my 3rd card then.
