This post underscores the importance of supporting ALL native resolution 3D modes in 3D Vision and 3DTV Play.
Gamers will tolerate a lot, but we won't tolerate bad image quality in games. Since bad quality = non-native resolution, TriDef and iZ3D did the logical thing, offer both checkerboard and side by side in their products so that all HDTVs, not just Samsung, can be used as display devices for 3D gaming.
I was at Best Buy yesterday and was impressed as to how clean the Panasonic was compared to the Samsung in terms of ghosting. Try as I might, I could see no ghosting on the Blu Ray 3D loop that was running on the Panasonic. On the Samsung right next to it, ghosting was evident on Samsungs equavilent loop. But the Panasonic can't be used for 3D gaming with nvidia software because Nvidia choose not to support the universal 3D standard, side by side. Nor can Vizio, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba.
Nvidia says SBS is hard to implement yet it wasn't that hard for TriDef and iZ3D.

In 3D games, 3D Vision/3DTV Play can't do native resolution per frame, 1 to 1 pixel mapping at 60 fps on any panasonic, or any other brand of HDTV except for 2010 model Samsungs. iZ3D and TriDef 3D drivers *can* do native rez/60 fps in 3D games on all brands of HDTVs which means people will be forced to use those competing drivers. The reason for this situation is no SBS mode in 3DTV Play/3D Vision.

Try to see the point of Roller's message. He is saying that 720p60hz frame packed or 1080p24hz frame packed are not the way to go for 3D gaming. We all agree thatt 24hz mode is not suitable for gaming and that's obvious. 720p60hz is a crap resolution due to scalonament and make games look ugly cause it's not the TV's native resolution. So considering that today's 3DTV Play only offers those modes for 3D gaming, he meant Nvidia support for 3DTV gaming is behind competition, period.
IZ3D and Tridef both offers side-by-side and checkerbord options, so everyone can play in 1920x1080 60hz, which is the best way for 3D gaming in a FULL HD 3D Ready TV.
We agree that frame packed is better cause it's full resolution per eye, but since it's not possible to get 1080p60hz frame packed cause of the HDMI 1.4 limitations, so for god sake just give us more options for 3DTV Play like side-by-side or checkerboard. Can't you guys from Nvidia see the big picture, you are losing customers to the competition. I really don't think it's not that hard to give us more 3D options, I think you still believe that PC gamers will not complain about 720p60hz frame packed. You just forgot that we're not console users and FULL HD resolution is all we ask for gaming.

Hi
I have posted this before and I will post it again. The original intention of 3DTV Play was for frame packed HDMI 1.4 modes, not to support every mode under the sun that the TV allows. We were trying to make it easy for customers to connect to 3D TVs, and not have to switch modes everytime they wanted to run 3D.
That being said we underestimated the demand for other modes like checkerboard and side/side mode and we will have to go back and evaluate when we could add these features. We will work on checkerboard, side/side is undecided.

We understand your position on SBS. We want to make you aware that on March 26,2011, everything changed. Before that date, SBS was nice but not crucial because we had checkerboard to satisfy our absolute requirement for native rez 3D gaming. But that all changed a month ago when Samsung in effect warned us that starting in 2012, Samsung will no longer offer checkerboard on any of their HDTVs.
All gamers want the same thing, the best 3D driver that supports native resolution 3D gaming. In 2011, that's 3D Vision (even though it's 3.5 times more money than TriDef 3D). In 2012, that will be TriDef 3D/iZ3D unless Nvidia changes it's mind and offers SBS.

Nvidia,
I have a Samsung PN51D550 3d tv and the only alternate 3d viewing modes it offers are side-by-side and over-under. No checkerboard.
I just bought a new computer with a 560Ti and also bought 3dtv play so that I could have a better 3d gaming experience on my tv. But I soon realized that the 24hz with 1080p has some drawbacks. There are some games I would love to have the option to switch to SBS mode with. I have read much in the last couple days and now know about iz3d and TriDef. I would love to stay with Nvidia and I believe in you fully but having a lack of options for 1080p is leaving me wondering if the other 3d drivers are worth using instead.
I am aware that you wanted to create an easy way to hook up a 3d gaming computer to your 3dtv and that is fine. All I ask is for an option in the Nvidia control panel that will allow me to choose SBS mode (and other modes for your other loyal customers). I don't need it to ask me how I wish to view. Let the default be as it is now. Just give me the option to change it to other 3d viewing modes in the control panel so that customers like me, and the many others I've seen on these forums, have the option to switch modes as we please. Something all the more basic users most likely won't even look for and therefore will cause no harm to their experience.

Nvidia are losing alot of money to 3dtvplay, alot of people use nvidia mods to get what nvidia are holding back on, if this is'nt the case most people go amd so either way nvidia and there plan loses money day in and day out.
The sooner they realise they are losing money on a product the better as 3dtvplay is one hell of a big pile of rubbish and i'd never dream about spending cash on it when there are better alternatives even with a nvidia card and 3dvision.
I paid for tridef but have'nt paid for nvidia 3d, no piont when there 3d is lacking so bad! I still use nvidia 3d for free but this is'nt my fault for wanting something they have locked down in there drivers, it's allso something i can't pay for as again nvidia has it locked down so it's impossible to pay for something they make and i use!

Yah, I just do not understand why they limit 3DTV Play at 1080 to 24Hz, when their competitors offer 1080 at 60. People buy 3DTV Play to game on their TVs, so why the video playback format?

C'mon guys, it's pointless arguing with Nvidia, they know we want SBS and refuse making it happen and this is not since today, or yesterday, it is since day1. Every time the subject is brought to light it's the same thing - they haven't decided, it takes too much resources to implement.
Looking at what CD project RED has done on the gaming scene, and I do realize that I am comparing a software manufacturer to a hardware one, it is easy to understand that NV is enjoying the advantage of having only one true competitor in this niche market of s-3d gaming. If they were under any kind of financial threat, they would actually listen to what people want and respond accordingly, but since they aren't, they do what they want (or don't do anything at all) and people continue to buy they product because there is no real choice on the matter.
I really do hope iz3d goes open source and talented programmers out there have their way with it so that we could get actual s-3d support, the way Helix has been able to provide, no red band and no "no user interaction" nonsense.
Now that I'm done saying my piece, I do have to give credit to Nvidia for allowing gamers to play at least some games right via the 3d vision ready program, and this is what I can't understand - they work with developers to deliver better support, but can't answer to gamers' needs when it comes to things that are fully within their grasp, such as additional outputs.

Why would you ever consider Checkerboard when its already available with a hack and only a handful of TV manufacturers support it? What we need is SBS!!!!

What do you mean we cannot support Panasonic 3D TVs? We fully support them today.

Thank you for your time,
Kenneth :)
