Any better 3D Vision monitor than my PG278Q ?
  2 / 4
Soooo I saw my local computer store had three of the new ones in stock so I made an impulse buy and bit the bullet and replaced my primary PG278Q with the updated (R) version. I will post my feelings on the comparison after I played with it a bit. But here's an unexpected and very nice surprise.... 3dsurround works perfectly even when mixing it with two of the older model screens! =D I guess the driver doesn't see them as different models as long as you are running the same refresh rate.

It's a tempting monitor, surely. I hate the scanlines and crosstalk of my S2716DG. But the Asus PG278QR costs 725€ here, and the Dell cost me 495.71€ a year ago :(. A lot more money for more 3D quality. I'll wait to see what's up with the upcoming HDR monitors.

It's definitely a bit of a step up from the first version. It's got an HDMI port, and gamma and Black intensity settings. The picture definitely looks better with more vibrant colors. It's less "grainy" but it is still a TN panel obviously. I probably wouldn't have got one, but I already have these monitors in surround, so I thought I would be the guinea pig. Contrary to statements here however it does actually have crosstalk issues, although it is a significant improvement from the previous model, and all other screens I have tried. Play some Nier Automata and you will see it. However I haven't calibrated the screen and it seems more tolerant at higher brightness settings that the previous model. So I would be interested in other 3dvision users and what sort of settings they are using.

Thanks for that Blacksmith That's pretty close to what I am currently running. Just a warning I have seen a problem with both of these models where when playing games The signal will be intermittently lost for a couple of seconds then come back. (screen just goes black) It can be very dangerous if you like competitive gaming like I do as It has already lost me a Tekken online ranked match. =( I am still troubleshooting this and hope it's just poor quality DP cables shipped with the Panel. As it seems one cable I have does not have the issue. I had almost forgot this problem as I had experienced it in the past with the previous model, but it went away. But now this new panel has the issue. I suspect it's probably just poor quality DP cables, but its so inconsistent it's difficult to track down. Anyone else experienced this problem?

I do know that when you go to the Display Port site, only Accell has earned certification for the cables that they produce. There were a lot of threads around the internet about issues from shitty manufactured cables. So when I needed a longer one, I bought one from Accel as recommended by several people in those threads. It's worked perfectly. Looking at the list now, there's been a few added, https://www.displayport.org/products-database/ (select cables) Previously, only Accell was listed. On the flip side, there's also been reports of bad DP outputs on Nvidia GPUs. You might check the manufacturer forums, user reviews on vendor sites and the sub-forum here for Pascal GPUs.

... That Asus monitor... it has a Lightboost strobe length option? The Dell doesn't and I have to wndure the equivalent of the max setting, which has more motion blur than what I would like. Blacksmith56, use 100% brightness and the lowest strobe length you can, if what I asked above is true.

I am not certain as I am not sure what "strobe Length" is exactly. Haven't seen anything with that term in the settings. D-Man11 This issue has been a factor in two different GPU's from two different manufacturers so I hope its not the cards, but thanks I will investigate further. I am leaning towards the Cable itself though. I will see if I can track down some of those Accell ones. cheers

What I mean is what used to be the Lightboost %, that went from 10% to 100%. It changed how long the monitor is showing its image per refresh (less time = less motion blur and less brightness). There is an equivalent option for ULMB, for example. I used Ligthboost at 10% on my old monitor.

The only lightboost option available is the brightness/ strenght... The reason why I use 25% normal brightness, is that it's suitable for the desktop / not gaming (I don't game in 2D at all :)

Theres ULMB Pluse width setting but thats only in 2d mode. Only lightboost setting is the typical 1-100 slider

The lightboost "brightness" option works by adjusting the length of each strobe, however during the strobe the backlight is always at full brightness. With a shorter strobe time (lightboost set at 10% e.g.) perceived brightness is lower and vice versa. My lightboost options are discrete 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, kinda wish I had a slider!

@Masterotaku: Just tried with 100% light and 10% lightboost, it simply doesn't work this way.. Lightboost is controlling the overall brightness, so with 10% the picture is very dark, meaning in 3D mode the normal light setting doesn't matter !

@Blacksmith56: yes, the Lightboost % directly controls brightness, but not by reducing voltage, but reducing the time the image is displayed (it's also a wider range than brightness, that's why it can be pretty dark). I recommend you to use 100% normal brightness and adjust the Lightboost % to your taste. In my case (Dell S2716DG), I can only change normal brightness and contrast, with no way of reducing the strobe length. I got used to it, but I would like to get less motion blur. NVicious got it right. Hy, at least you have some options! Knowing this, chances of buying a PG278QR have increased :p.
