3D Gaming Build
Well, I am looking forward to getting into 3d gaming but need a little advice!

My current PC setup is

CPU: i7 860 3.0ghz
Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600
HD: 60gb Agility 2 SSD, Raid0 500gb Barracuda (Also have 1TB in Raid-0 and another 1TB for back up)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 295

It is my understanding that I need a 4xx/5xx card with HDMI 1.4 to be able to run 3d. Is that correct? I am looking at buying the 580.

I also found a LCD-LED 3D TV that I like, the Sony Bravia KDL-55HX800.

I want to be able to play games and watch movies in 3d. Do I also need to buy the Nvidia 3d kit or Sony's 3d kit? I've heard about checkerboard and SbS but have no idea what is preferred or if having both is ideal and if that makes a difference.

I'm not really an expert, but I can tell you that you won't need a 4xx/5xx series card to run 3D. Still, getting one would allow you to get better performances and quality since playing in 3D halves your FPS at any time.
I suggest you to get nVidia 3D Vision kit, no doubt about that. It is the most performing and will allow to play virtually any game in 3D, and of course watch movies/pics as well.
Well, to be honest I don't know much about other 3D systems, but from what I've read, most of them either work only on a few games, or reduce your performances a lot more than nVidia 3D Vision (since the latter uses directly drivers to render S3D, making it faster than other solutions)

Getting nVidia 3D Vision by 20/07/11 -> -12 days as of 08/07/11 (hopefully sooner)

New computer specs (arriving together with nVidia 3D Vision)

Processor: i7 960 3.2GHz

Graphic Card: ASUS GTX590 3GB

RAM: 6x2GB DDR3 RAM 1333MHz

Storage: SSD 80GB+HDD 2TB Sata-III

Case: Aerocool XPredator EB

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ 22" (+nVidia 3D Vision)

Whatever you do, don't get the Sony. Sony and most other brands don't support checkerboard mode, so you'll be doomed to 3DTV Play and it's ugly scaled 720P images. get a checkerboard capable Samsung/LG and 3D game in native resolution with 3D Vision.

I had the 55hx800 for 6 weeks in late 2010. So disappointed with 3D gaming was I, I searched all the 3D forums asking if there was a fix for the poor images I was seeing. No relief until I read that the Samsung TVs supported CB mode, so I ditched the Sony for my current Samsung.

Oh wow, thanks for the information! I didn't realize CB was so superior to SbS. What Samsung TV do you currently have for your 3d gaming? Are you satisfied with it? I also read somewhere that the newer Mitsubishi DLP TVs are pretty good. I don't have to have the top of the line, new 2011 TVs, a solid 2010 model is great.
