All heads up should go to Kolreth for this.
I thought 3D didn't even work - it was OpenGL or something. Turns out you have to set it to full screen :/
If anyone enjoyed the Elite 2 you will love this game. It looks fab in 3D too. The HUD is multilayered 3D! Fantastic.
I have only played for a few moments - I got too excited and felt the need to post this.
Again, N1 Kolreth!
EDIT
The game is already stunning in 3D but their are a few issues. Thanks to the excellent customisation tools I have produced the following tweaks:
Contact icons are two close to screen, the brackets obscure the targets - simplified texture to remove brackets leaving the info table beneath.
Artificial Horizon too close - removed as there are other indicators availiable.
Weapon lock circles are too close obscuring targets - compensated by increasing diameter slightly.
Target shield status too close obscuring targets - removed as there are other indicators availaible.
There are two version:
BASIC: Just fixes the issues and leaves everything else vanilla.
http://speedy.sh/tktUD/Evochron-Mercenary-3D-Vision-Fix.rar
RECOMMENDED: As above, using MAXIMILLIAN's cockpit and lots of VIPERS's HUD elements - the cockpit is sleak, professional and has matt display consoles which make it easier to see the target ship details in 3D and the HUD looks stunning. I seriously recommend this one.

The demo locks out full screen mode, which is a shame. Screenshots would be good, it looks good on Steam but it's $25 which is on my limit for just 'trying out' stuff...

Use chiris tool, should be able to force fullscreen. I accidentally deleted the fancy page I wrote up for it = / . Apparently to the left of delete is save....
Anyway heres its temporary home till I get unlazy.

Thanks, I'll try that. The demo only gives you 90 minutes of gameplay as well, and thus far its crashed about 10 times trying to start it up (perhaps *because* I kept setting to FS mode...) so I've used up about 30 of my minutes. I'll report back if it works...

I managed to take one before it crashed. Was set at 75% depth for some reason. Looks better at 100%.

Actually the red lettering for some options means "not recommended" not locked out. It does work with 3d vision when I turn on AA to 2x from off. (it wouldn't activate in 3d in the locked fullscreen mode until I did that for some reason) the demo of Arvoch alliance (same game engine but mission based combat) also works in 3d.
Anyway it does look very good apart from the targeting around the ships being at a different depth than the ships. (might be an easy Helix mod fix if someone who knows what they are doing wants to have a look) The cockpit is 3d and it also supports track ir. It also works with 3d surround resolutions though you have to edit the sw.cfg file in the sw3dg folder manually. (that folder was on the the root of c drive for me, not the install folder) The first value is resolution so change "Optimized" to what you want like 6000x1080 and you'll need to set a higher fov (6th entry from the bottom) so the cockpit isn't stretched too wide. I changed mine from 0 to 4 and it works well at 6000x1080.
Still playing around with it but hope that helps others try it out. Demos available at http://www.starwraith.com/

@typx Thanks for the 2xAA tip, that did it! @eqzitara, just using the wrapper did not kick in FS mode by itself. The game does look good, though I only played for 10 mins in order to take a few screen shots. Lots of elements are at different depths in the menus and the game HUD, and though its usable, it would benefit from some Helixmod tweaking. The HUD does look great though even like this (see screenshot). When you close you realise that elements are definitely in the wrong place ike the little spinning globe map which I think should be at the depth of the box surrounding it, and so on. Many of the ship/item markers are inside the cockpit, though to be honest I don't think that's a big deal.

Your convergence is a little higher than mine (perhaps 8-10 taps of F6 more) but it has pushed the compasses out too far. Try reducing it a little. That will put both compasses in a better place!

Regarding the target icon. As Kolreth has said elsewhere, the devs at StarWraith are excellent!
I have been talking to one of them, Vice, about the target icon being too close. I have asked it to be the same depth as the gun sight which would be perfect. He said that the reason the icon is where it is is because any further and it will clip and be hidden behind the cockpit.
Vice asked me to email him so I have. I have suggested that it wouldn't matter if the target icons vanish behind the cockpit because the gun sights have an arrow to target AND the lower compass is present which also displays the targets!
Unfortunately Helix seems to crash the game so I also asked him if he wouldn't mind adding an 'Increased Target Icon Depth' toggle which would do the above to the menu for us 3D gamers in my email. It would be great if you could add a plus one to the thread at their forums...

If anyone isn't on a 3DPC and wants to view them, you can download StereoPhoto Maker, associate JPSs to open with it and then press X on the keyboard to swap left/right and then view them with the cross-eyed method.

So it all comes down to that damn 2D crosshair again? :D
I get what Vice is saying about keeping the targeting system within the confines of the HUD/cockpit BUT that doesn't mean it isn't possible or even feasible. It doesn't have to actually be rendered at the depth it's targeting it just has to 'align' with the depth it's targeting to. It could still be rendered 'on top' of everything, so it doesn't disappear behind anything, and just get it's 'placement' coordinates based off of the point of view, the enemy being targeted's depth, and the rendered depth/HUD. I could be wrong, but it seems to me it all comes down to a fairly simple equation.

It's not 2D. Nothing in the game is. It is 3D but not quite out far enough. It is out far enough for combat. It is more gutting than anything else because everything else is pretty much perfect.
The dev is willing to make changes to the game but there needs to be more people asking. I think oit does involve a bit of testing and might not be a simple matter of pushing out the shader. Of course it is far more likely I didn't explain it very well. The dev hasn't seen his creation in 3D which is ironic because it the best 3D I've seen in a space game and you can land on planets, from space!
Please. It doesn't take long to register. A couple more people seriously asking for the target icons being pushed out might help convince the dev...
