Checkerboard 3d - Can someone help please?
Hi,

Started fiddling around with 3d, with a respectable goal in mind; playing skyrim in checkerboard 3d. Problem is, I don't know if it is achievable with my current setup. At least I haven't found a way to make it work.

My hardware:

PC with Geforce GTX 570
Samsung 55" 3d TV (UE55D7005) which should support the checkerboard mode.

Nvidia drivers are the latest stable package which should have the 3d components built-in.

The problem is that I don't seem to be able to actually get the Geforce to output the checkerboard mode, I don't know how to. I've installed the rollermod .inf for the monitor and it seems to work as the device looks correct in the device manager. However the drivers won't just allow me to select the checkerboard mode (3D DLP). Do I really need the Nvidia 3d emitter, even though I understand that I should be using the Samsung 3d glasses anyway?

Also, will the checkerboard 3d mode be enabled from the TV menu when the TV detects checkerboard signal on the screen? It seems to be grayed out, only allowing virtual 3d (2d->3d) or side-by-side mode.

Any advice would be really appreciated, even a nudge in to the right direction. I'm completely stuck and clueless right now.

Any advice would be really appreciated, even a nudge in to the right direction. I'm completely stuck and clueless right now.

Checkerboard output is a 3DVision feature (you need the emitter), not a 3DTVPlay feature currently.

That is what I was afraid of. Although reading the rollermod thread I somehow got the impression that it would be possible using this "dirty hack".

Does anyone have any idea if Nvidia is going to add this feature to the 3dPlay concept? I've been trying to find the best possible way (least tearing, best resolution, best effect, least artifacts) to display 3d content on my new TV, and by reading the forums I thought the checkerboard implementation could fit that bill. Being totally new to this I really don't have any clue if that is the way to go, or if some other approach could work better. I'd really like to hear more knowledgable people voice their opinions.

There is/was a hack floating around that fools the computer into believing it has an emitter attached.
Personally I work in software and won't pirate it, which is what this really amounts to.

using the av receiver(not hdmi 1.4) av receiver 1.3 not for 3d.(hdmi cable from ur pc to av receiver to ur led 3dtv)
this will trick nvidia control panel and nvidia CP cant recognize hdmi 1.4 then the conrol panel will not show 3dtv play.
i think samsung D8000 have 4 hdmi port. one of them can do checkerboard > i think hdmi NO.1 .
how to enable the chekerboard?
press source in the remot control then press tools(in the remot) in the hdmi1/dvi >then edit name then choose (pc).
every color of ur tv will chang (like vga color).now press 3d in ur remot u will see 6 option for 3d not 3 option.
connect ur amiter(nvidia 3d vision amiter -usb-) to ur pc.go control panel then enable stereotropic 3d.
go to setup wizard. in the test press 3d in the remot the choose one of the 6 choise for 3d (chekerboard) one of them will work i dont remember maybe the third one from the right.then u will everything good in the test.
now u can play games in 1920x1080p in 60hz each eye.
but the color of the tv will be different.
i think and in my opinion the 1280X720 60hz better for 3d.for the color and contrast.the checkerboard will downgrade the colore and the picture quality.

EDIT:

Thanks for the info, I'm not pirating anything. Just trying to find out what is required and what is not. I can pay for both SW and HW if I just first find out what combination will REALLY work for my setup.

Thanks a lot for this; I indeed had my media PC connected through my AV receiver, so I did what you (and roller11) suggested and well, the picture quality is far superior now in the PC when it's connected to HDMI1/DVI and source name edited to PC and all the 3d modes are now indeed unlocked in the 3d menu. Also, now I'm able to individually setup the picture settings in the TV for PC and other inputs so that's a bonus. The extra cabling clutter is not too bad either, although my wife may have a different opinion ;-).

Also everything else 3d-wise works too, I can't setup the checkerboard 3d with the Nvidia control panel since I don't have the 3dvision emitter, but iz3d driver works for this purpose. The colors seem maybe a bit washed out like you said, but not irritatingly so, as a gamer I don't really like to sacrifice the resolution for the contrast but each to his own I guess.
