Finally doing the 'TV thing' with 3d vision.... what horrors am i facing? Whats the options?
Wow, so many questions. I've been happy with my 27'' m3d monitors since 2011... Getting a TV and would like to be able to use for 3d pc gaming.
I've seen the official list, but surely theres more...?
I'm looking for 58'' or nearest to.... And passive (would like to try it out
Is there anything new that works?
LG is the only (major) company that made passive 3d TVs and they stopped this year. Sony has a couple of Active models out but if you want passive you'll have to find one of LGs OLEDs or high end LEDs from last year.
I never found an exact answer why but for some reason passive 3d was only ever made on IPS (other than OLED) panels. I suspect it's something to do with LG patenting it for the home market or something but never came across an exact answer.

Suggest getting LG's 55E6 or 55C6, before they disappear, and follow SoundBlstr's guidance, starting with https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/943900/3d-vision/search-information-about-edid-for-3dvision-on-lg-oled-4k-55ef950v-55ef9500-/post/5069058/#5069058. You need 4K certified HDMI cable, and preferably at least 1080Ti GPU.
upvote to whyme, 55c6p is fantastic and doable with a 980ti but newer games run at about 21-30ish fps which can be playable but your gonna want an upgrade. I am not entirely sure of the reason but my 1440p dell looks smoother compared to the TV even if the game will run 60fps on both resolutions. That seems to be the only other drawback so far.

Thanks heaps for the quick response lads. I'm going to go 2d in this instance... I have a beast of a swing arm wallmount monitor setup, I'll continue sitting up close and dedicate the tv to the console experience.

A good monitor is always going to look better than a TV, and just better for gaming in general IMO. TV's often don't sight important things like input latency (cause those numbers don't sound impressive) and often have a lot of processing nonsense on the image that causes issues either slowing the monitor down restricting you to a low frame rate or degrading the image in some way.
Not too say you can't find an awesome TV to game on but it's seems hard to get all the technical information on them. I have a cockpit so sitting close is just as good on a 27" and I need a high frame-rate while gaming else I get motion sick so 1440p for me is the sweet spot. 3D vision makes any 2d gaming look inferior no matter the resolution as far as I am concerned.

If money and time isn't a problem, i'd definitely go try a used 46" or 55" Samsung checkerboard 3DTV. Ever look at a big painting on the wall and think its awesome just because its so big and life like? Same thing sort of applies to bigger displays IMO. IMO its worth just trying it to see.
I recommend a used Samsung ES7500 or newer/higher end such as the ES8000 or F8000, keeping in mind that higher end and more expensive doesn't always equal better 3D gaming performance. Check online manuals to make sure it supports checkerboard before ordering, they call it "pixel mode". Most of their mid-high or high end models support it up to about 2015 I think.
That said, I'm not sure it would be better if you were to view it from far away. Like if the resulting FOV based on your mounting pos were less than your 27" using your articulating arm, I'm not sure it would be any better. I view my 46" from just under a meter away and it gives me almost the horizontal FOV of the Oculus Rift.
I can't imagine ever going back to 27". I did want to try some reading glasses to help my eyes focus in the distance instead of a foot away, which was where I tried to use in from roughly. I did that to try and get a bigger, more immersive FOV. It would probably hurt my eyes today. The reading glasses also enlarge the image a bit too, increasing size and FOV, so that's a plus. Maybe if they work i'd attach them permanently to the outsides of the Nvidia glasses. heck, I might even try this with my 46" ES7500.
