Epic Launcher now working correctly for me, without re-installing.
$10 Discount also applies to Observation (another exclusive for one year). I cannot find anything about Observation's game engine - does anyone know what engine No Code is using?
I don't see how Valve is greedy, and Epic is not. Most online platforms charge the same fees, Ie Apple store, Google play store. To me Valve seems like one of the most pro consumer, and Anti monopoly companies out there. This coming from someone who barely buys anything from them. BTW, EA wanted to buy Valve and they couldnt so they got upset and built their own launcher. Its a known thing. Ubisoft, on the other hand still sells their games on steam even after Uplay was created 7 years ago. So I doubt their creation of Uplay had anything to do Steam.
Also, you dont have to buy games from steam. there are shit ton of stores where you can get your games without giving Steam one cent if you prefer. I don't really buy games on steam. about 80% of my library comes from Key redemption from other sellers. but I love using their features like family sharing, big picture, Broadcast to show friends what I am playing, I love using their forums everytime I have an issue, ETC. just to name a few. The truth is I don't have to give them my money to enjoy any of these features. which by the way it costs money to maintain them. Valve has consumers on their side because people also enjoy these features and love using Steam.
There is a big difference in having a monopoly and people overwhelmingly choosing and preferring your service because well it is just superior to everything else available. Valve has never forced any developer to release their game exclusively on their store, in fact, they have done the opposite. they have gone as far as to pay developers to keep their games open and to not go into exclusivity deals. On the other had, Epic has done nothing to attract me as a consumer, other than stealing games from steam, and holding games hostages to force people to buy them only from their store if they want to play such games, while adding nothing new, or innovating. All they are doing is just throwing money around. They announced they wont do forums or Custome's Reviews. Of course they won't. they don't want consumers complaining. "just give us your money and shut the fuck up"
Yes competition is good, but healthy competition, that is, and Epic doesn't want that. They just want to buy people over. Is this the type of competition you want? where we dont have the choice to buy the games where we want, but instead are forced to buy it only from them? Sorry not me, for me more is always better. And all Epic is doing is removing competition, not increasing it.
Epic is taking a large portion of it's money earned from Fortnite and is doing something extremely bold; going up against the largest online PC game marketplace there is, to do so, of course they are going to have to have exclusive titles that will get people to consider their platform, because without them, or without lower prices, why would you bother buying a title anywhere other than Steam?
Would you do things differently if you were Epic?
Here's a really good read on the matter:

I have installed Epic but have yet to make a purchase. You get one free game a week for as long as this sale goes. I'm still mulling over picking up The Witness for $10 as I've yet to play that.

1st) I would make Epic launcher a better Launcher than steam. I would offer features that are not available on steams. I would love to support Epic because they offer a better service than Steam does. But not because they are holding content hostage and the only way to get it is to be forced to buy it from them, while adding absolutely nothing new or beneficial to the table.
2) I would create more games. Sadly they seemed to be doing exactly the opposite. I downloaded Epic Game Launcher back in 2014 when Unreal Tournament alpha came out. I've been a hardcore Unreal fan since back in the day with the first Unreal and then UT. I was part of the community that spear headed the development for the first alpha built. Then came fornite and all of their cash with it, They canceled their other game Paragon and Epic abandoned UT altogether. right now there is not one person working on the game, and there hasn't been any updates on it for over 2 years. Despite all of the revenues they are getting from fornite they couldn't even spare 2 people to work on the project. They shat on their most loyal fans and abandoned the franchise that made them popular just to focus on money making Fornite. If they can do with their most loyal fans what makes you think they could care about gamers at all?
3) I would stop stealing games from Steam. They aren't just signing exclusivities, they are paying developers to remove their games from Steam all together, or at least a few days before release. See Metro Exodus. If they want to get exclusives either make them like EA does, or at least bring something new to the table like securing console exclusives instead. Bringing Journey, Heavy Rain, Detroit, and Beyond 2 souls to the PC is an excellent way to get people excited. I would absolutely buy those games from Epic. So bring more of those, that would set them apart from Steam.
4) I would keep doing free on the house games which is also a good incentive. Once you have a good catalog. start Advertising a lot on youtube, Twitch, social media, even Sports events on TV. NBA, MLB, etc. I have never seen Valve advertise ever anywhere. Anyone who know of steams does so through word of mouth from someone else.
I'm sure they can come up with new ways. But they don't want to build trust from customers, they don't want to wait and grow. I guess they don't want the hassle of being small and working your way up like steam did. They got ton of money from fornite, and they just want to cut through the line by buying the developers out, and trying to undermine steam in anyway they can so that people can only buy the games they want from them. No better service, No innovation, new games from them, Nothing.
Epic is taking a large portion of it's money earned from Fortnite
lol, where did you come up with this?
Even a small portion should have yielded at least some semblance of something other than a Key reseller.
The only gripe I have with Epic Store at the moment is the complete absence of user / player submitted game reviews. This is a reason I hate Origin. Its anti-transparency at it's worst.
Usually the user / player reviews are the most important, there have been so many would be purchases that were saved by them. A game's multiplayer could be completely dead or it's playerbase split between DLC or no-DLC lobbies and you wouldn't know it, as is the case with COD: Black Op's 3, a game I gave it's recent user / player reviews a good once over before re-downloading (it's 100GB large, reading the reviews saved wasting my limited data on this).
https://store.steampowered.com/app/311210/Call_of_Duty_Black_Ops_III/
It's like that with nearly every game, the user / player reviews are usually the best, and a store without them is basically trying to sell you something that you have less knowledge about, and therefore, are more inclined to make an uninformed purchase (to their advantage). I don't care if a game is $10 less than it would be on Steam, if it's a flop, or the multiplayer is dead, now I'm out $40 vs. being out $0.
That Epic Game's apparently treated the Fortnite playerbase like trash with non-existent customer service is another huge red flag in my book. Right now I'm dealing with an instance of this with Forza Horizon 4's dev team, Turn 10 / Playground Games. There are so many issues with this game on PC and if you submit a ticket to their customer service it won't even be answered, or you will get banned from their official forum for talking about it. Yes, that bad.
I still haven't purchased anything from the Epic Store, the only game I'm remotely interested in is The Witness for $9 but I'm thinking of just waiting for it to go on sale during Steam's Summer Sale.
I get that competition is good, but I mean, Jesus Christ another separate game store / library / launcher on top of Origin, Steam, Blizzard and U-Play? It's getting to the point of being too much.

PSA: RiME is currently FREE on EGS. Pick it up as it has an excellent 3D fix, I played it way back when it came out and remember liking it (had some surprisingly good rain effects for an indie).

When was it free? Last I checked, maybe day before yesterday it was $10, and now it's still $10.

Edit:
I guess it was free back in April? Maybe if I was interested in paying full price for Metro: Exodus I would have dabbled with the store back then. Oh well.

Lets be real theres a lot wrong with Epic store but... steam reviews are a cesspool to any non cult-clasic/indie title. Forums are even worse. If I was a triple A developer I wouldnt want anything to do with it since its a liability.
I am pretty sure like half the games that reached 100,000 reviews are mostly negative reviews.
Its honestly a liability to any AAA developer. If one member of your game team has "politics"-BOMB. Too much DLC/Optional content- "BOMB". Denuvo/DRM - "BOMB".
I read metacritic PC because steam reviews say every indie title is a 9/10-10/10. Meanwhile anything else ranges from 50%/70%
Thats not even talk about steam forums. Its honestly the worse cesspit on a title prior to release->week following release.... when games make 70% of there sales.
---------
Epic/EA would be out of there mind to enable either. They would be bombed even on a legitimately great title. Even indie developers would get bombed and get all the loveliness that comes with it. Threats, death threats, being called greedy, etc.
