Tomb Raider Nvidia 3D vision problem
  1 / 9
Hello, so recently I bought a monitor ASUS VG278HR with nvidia 3D vision 2 kit but when I wanted to play through the whole tomb raider game again, probably for the 10th time I just can't. Everytime I setup the stereoscopic 3D , the game is really choppy and unplayable, like the game is playing in 10 fps....but when I play the game without the stereoscopic 3D on, the game is flawless and the framerate is as high as 150 fps....with every setting turned to the max.

Turn off tressfx if you havent turned it off already. Is this always or sometimes? Shantytown takes a lot of performance.

I've had this happen as well, I have read it's something specific to 600 series cards (checked your sig) that started happening sometime around the 320.18 driver release. I have not tested to see if this is true though, but I keep meaning to. Or it could be related to the mouse input changes introduced in the windows 8.1 service pack, there is a patch for it on the MS support site somewhere.

What OS version? There is another thread that says that 8.1 update kills off SLI, so you'd be running single 670 in that case. Also driver version? The drivers lately have been pretty awful, and it would be worth rolling back to 320.18.

I can't speak for any "odd" issues above stated. But reduction of graphical settings and no apparent change in framerate would most likely mean its CPU related. Also, look at CPU temperatures especially since your overclocking, thats a bit of a hefty overclock [not undoable with air cooling but can't get much higher *unless using stock fan*]. I would check to make sure your not throttling.

The only changes to my setup were driver updates and windows 8 service pack 1. I've installed the mouse update to fix the problem that introduced but the problem persists. My machine is not overclocked in any way and all temps are fine.

lol I did a pile of testing, what makes it work sily smooth for me is turning on triple buffer v-synch once playing the game. Doesn't matter if it's on when I start up, got to turn it on after disabling it in that case. Weird.
Just tried that, couldn't see a difference.
Are you on windows 8.1? could be mouse scaling they added with the service pack, you could try turning on "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" in the compatibility tab of TombRaider.exe if that is the case, I have that turned on, and run as administrator. I must have had them turned on already when I tried to fix it another time.

Just tried that, no dice. Runs much better on only one GPU, so there's something funny going on with SLI and 3d.

Well I have the windows version 8.1 pro I will try to run the game with only one gtx 670 enabled and I will be back to tell you how it went, but Iam not very hopeful that it'll help... EDIT Ok so tried running it with a single car and in 3D with and the frames were much smoother, but still below 40. On the other hand with sli turned on it went straight down to 10 fps. I read somwhere on the forums that changing the sli flag via the nvidia inspector to hitman absolution might help...Iam going to try this right now, brb. EDIT 2 Ok so I tried chaning the sli compatibillity bits to those from hitman absolution, it didn't help unfortunately. Now Iam puzzled on how to get this working, it is definitely an issue with the sli, because with only a single card enabled it runs ok, without the awful choppiness and heavy stuttering, also the tressfx hair isn't spazzing out so hard.

Dunno what to suggest chaps. I am on a 690, so I don't know how much difference there is internally with it to a 2 card SLI setup.

One big difference between the 690 and other SLI setups is that it is a single card, even though it operates as SLI to NVidia. From reading about 8.1, it looks like Microsoft changed the underlying video model to version 1.3, and part of that is to more fully support that twisted hybrid model like Optimus, where the system can decide to use integrated graphics for power saving, and switch to discrete when something fun is running. It looks like there were some early problems where it would mark a 2nd adapter as not hybrid friendly because it wasn't the boot monitor. Mostly that seems fixed in 2D, but might still be the issue now when using 8.1 in 3D. It is suggestive that a single card SLI like 690 works, whereas multiple card SLI does not. There doesn't seem to be any clear solution, but a couple of things that stood out as possibilities: 1) Try hooking up a second monitor to your SLI card. The 2nd card is marked off only if it's 'not in-use'. 2) Try setting your secondary card as the boot monitor in the BIOS. 3) See if there are any BIOS settings that might change how your 2nd card is reported to the OS. 4) See if there is a BIOS update for your board that has any video changes.
