Disappointed GTX 670 SLI....

@op: You can look at my specs. I run a 950 also, with gtx 570 sli. so far, there is not a game this machine can't handle in 3d, most games at max settings (stock cpu speeds). So something is seriously amiss in your system. Even at stock speeds, you should NEVER see 20 fps in any game. On a side note, oc'ing really can help quite a bit. I just bought a corsair h60 cpu cooler a couple weeks ago. I've been able to get a stable 4ghz overclock. Of course, it really only made a difference in the most demanding games like fc3, and skyrim with 30+ mods, where was once a dip to 50fps is now solid at 60fps (3d).

Wow, hold on fellas! What the OP is getting is perfectly reasonable. I am running 670 SLi with i7 @ 4GHz and getting pretty much the same results as OP. His games are an unfortunate selection. Although I have not tried crysis3 yet, AC3 and Prototype 2 are infamous throughout the internet for getting very low FPS on the most powerful systems, where the GPU usage is very low. And unfortunately no, this will not be fixed as the the AC3 guys are now concentrating on AC4, and Prototype 2 studio has been dissolved. OP. As many people here have said, you are indeed bottlenecked by not being at ~ 4GHz, but even if you were at 4GHz, both these games will still run very badly. Remember that in most games, looking at real world benchmarks shows no significant FPS improvement even on CPU bottlenecked games with an old i7 or the latest gen CPUs clock for clock. I have done a lot of research on this issue on both these games, and unfortunately, this is the hard truth: Bad ports. Here is hoping that the next gen games will be better optimized for the PC, as the architectures of the next consoles will closely resemble a PC.

AcidBong, I can guarantee you that you are not getting what in my opinion is acceptable frame rates on your system for P2 and AC3. Everyone's preferences differ, but I would say that getting less that solid 60FPS is unacceptable for high grade PC gaming. For these two, I get an average of 45 fps. From what I have read, I am quite lucky. I have to admit though, that P2 has a serious problem with 6xx gen cards. Some people with older 4xx cards report solid 60fps in P2. Have you tried running fraps? What fps does it show on these 2 games?

Thanks for the input everyone. I have overclocked the cpu to 3.4 ghz with a stock fan, and don't see noticeable improvement. So I have ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212....And will give it a go. Give battlefield 3 ago and see if it still drops like it did before. You should notice thise drops in fps should be less severe now. I personally don't trust artifical tests as some of the results I got from them didnt stack up with performance increase or decrease in real games. Also, I would strongly advise NEVER overclock on your stock fan. What are your temps at? The fan that came bundled with my 920 was a joke, with idle of around 45c. On stock clock would happily get up to 75 with load. Be careful not to fry your silicone :-)

SOLVED !!!! Happy, but a little embarrased, I followed advice and checked my CPU temperature to discover at idle it was at 98 degrees C !!! So I then opened up my machine and discovered the cpu wasn't seated correctly, and the thermal paste had dried and caked up! No doubt the cpu was throttling down a LOT. Such a shame I have no idea how long this problem existed, and never played BF3 properly because of this fault, and never guessed what the problem was after all these years... It was a bugger of a problem really, because some games ran fine, where as cpu heavy games were majorly gimped. My first full computer build...We live and learn. Thanks guys!

Really pleased you solved it. You big numpt! ;) I lose sleep if something goes wrong with my rig! What's SLI like with those cards? Really thinking about getting another. What's your verdict?

The I7's appear to be hardy little bastards, even though you definitely shortened it's life, I'm sure it will see you through to your next build. Glad you got it sorted out. Can you report your new standard clock fps on battlefield and than your oc min fps? I'm willing to bet not only has it shot up across the board, but that you will notice a significant difference on the oc. Are you using the cooler master fan already? If not, don't over-clock again until you have it, that stock fan is poop ;-)
I have ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212....And will give it a go.
I have one of those, the thing is massive! I took off the stock fan and put 2 smoke black fans with red LEDs on it. It's on a i5 2500k SB overclocked from 3.3 to 4.4. PC looks like something out of Dead Space. :D How much of a PSU do you need to run 2x 670s? Curious about upgrading, I think I have a 650w.

It's so much better now :D Yup, I'm waiting for a Cooler Master Hyper 212, which seems to be a recommended one. So far, overlclocked to 3.6ghz, the two gtx670's can do crysis3 max everything, at 1080p, perfect. And battlefield 3 max settings perfect too! AA optional, didn't notice much difference. My power supply is corsiar 1000w, and it's not enough to cope with another gtx480 I have for physx, might have to try a 1200w just to be sure, those things are so hungry! The two 670's don't like overclocking though it seems, even a light overclock in afterburner seems to crash games...

I had a feeling, I did say to check temps. Its an honest mistake, four years ago I had same issue with an amd where it got so hot it would keep throttleing. I had this issue for months and had no idea. Try evga precision for overclocking GPU'S imo. Be sure to check your temperatures now that you OC'D.[CPU/GPU]

Yeah you need a couple things- A much higher overclock on that 950 or a new cpu(first gen i7 are out-dated/bottleneck will for sure occur) Much lower cpu temps( I wouldn't run first gen i7 beyond 65C) Another 670 GTX, for most games now a days to get a average of 60fps you need a minimum of 2x 670/680 sli'ed. Aftermarket cooler- Hyper 212 Plus for that i7 950= $25 I can't say I'm having the same experience as you, but then again I'm running@5.0ghz on my 2500k so huge difference in cpu power there.

I always read you get micro stuttering with SLI. Is this not the case with 3dvision, as each card does one frame? So SLI is the perfect solution for 3dvision? Reading this thread makes me want to try 2 670 as well
