Word of warning. My cable that came with my vision 2 glasses stopped working (gradually progressed.. had to keep pressing the connection in one direction more and more so until it finally just stopped charging at all). I used my generic 3'rd party wall socket phone charger, and ghosting in games suddenly skyrocketed.
Think anything that terminates to USB into a computer's safe.. this charger just ends in a wall socket plug.

I had a defective USB device. I plugged into my MOBO. Mobo got fried [no joke]. If I plugged into one of those multiport usb hubs it would of probably just zapped that instead. I got lucky and it cost me around a 120 dollar mobo, I was worried about processor but they are hard to break besides overheating.

I meant to ask before, what the heck was the USB device that fried it on you? Scary. I had a power supply fry a few Voodoo5s on me before I realized it, luckily Circuit City had a great return policy ... I know it was probably just a coincidence but that's the last time I'll ever do another AMD build.

Yep, one of the reasons AMD processors are so cheap is they don't have a lot of the voltage safety elements that go into an Intel processor. They cut corners when it comes to that.
But hey, they're like 10 bucks for a six-pack.
Edit-And by safe I meant safe for the glasses. I'd be borderline impressed if the 3D Vision glasses caused a MB to fry by charging them through the computer.

Wait... you had a 3DFX Voodoo 5?? wwwwWWOOOOWWwwww... I've never seen one in RL but going by the pictures using one is like plugging a MB into your MB.

It was actually an old xbox controller. My other ones buttons were getting bad[no resistance] so I swapped them. Not sure what happened to it, perhaps moisture got in it. Its not an issue that seems to happen alot though where a device shorts out a mother board. I have no idea how much power it can draw but was very surprising. I know it doesnt sound believable, but its 100% what happened. I plugged it in and it said device not recognized. I thought it was wierd, tryed to replug it in two more times in different ports. Smelt smoke then boom fire[not huge] right near usb ports on mobo. Was unlucky/lucky depending on outlook though, only was a mobo.
Regardless, I am using a $10 usb hub instead of plugging straight to motherboard now.
Power supply's are the worse thing to go. Its russian roulette between every other device connected to it. There are stories where it destroys everything including usb devices connecting to computer. Now adays with video cards drawing crazy amounts of power both from mobo and directly from Power supply they are guaranteed to go pretty much.

It was a Voodoo5 5500 so it was a bit smaller but yeah the 6000 was a beast!
I still have my Voodoo 2, in my spare parts box... :P
I have my Voodoo3 still ... even though I know I'll never use it ... and I think the 5 died.

It's crazy you'd think they'd have better measures in place to stop the damage from a short, I had a ps1 controller cable short it was literally melting and the ps1 itself was fine.

You are more than likely used it for a device where you need a longer cable.
I'm using mine for my USB hub :)
