Spending around $1,000 DLP TV vs Projector Currently own the Alienware monitor
Hi guys,

So I currently have a 3d vision setup (i7, 480gtx, 8gb ram, etc). I am using the Aliware monitor (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-8846) @ 1080p which is really nice... but now that I have more space and a free wall for a projector/large TV I started to do some research.

I'm a bit conflicted. My original plan was to get 2 more monitors to do the surround 3d vision that is supposed to be coming out.... and of course I would need at least an extra 480gtx.

However now that I think about it.. perhaps getting a huge screen projector or DLP tv (maybe 3x DLPs eventually.. though that seems like it would serve almost no real practical purpose outside of gaming). So now, I might just end up selling the Alienware.

I am looking at this DLP TV here:

=================================

So currently I'm thinking more about the projector. I have about 20 feet away from the wall (can be a bit more if need be...). And the wall I have is about 20 feet wide by like 10-12 feet tall.

The only downside for the project I see is the 1) lighting conditions 2) bulb lifetime , cost of replacement, so how long would I realistically be able to use it 3) not 1080p

Also, I read that the DLP tv's will eventually get an adapter for when 3d tv is out.

The largest screen I have is 30" so you can't really appreciate 1080p on it. I must say I'm not really picky about quality of video .. perhaps I haven't really experienced 1080p on a really large screen. However, I also don't really watch TV....

The main factor would be things like playing 3D Vision capable games , xbox360 and Wii... watching the occasional movie.

I guess I'm really wondering how much of a difference between the experience of 1080p at 65" vs 720p at a huge size.

EDIT: on second thought.. perhaps having a huge projector and only being able to game at 720p might be a big downside.
Thanks

any ambient light destroys the pj contrast if you dont spend the time or the money on screen. Calculate with that, 720p wont really matter.

Theres no fullHD 3d on the telly either , the DLP light modulator chips inside have around the same resolution I think the pj is better , heres why:

DLP TV: no full resolution DLP chip but half , 960*1080 , it uses some time trick to act as fullhd. Then the 3d is not true 120hz, but contains only every second pixel in checkerboard pattern*60hz. So obviously this is not native resolution either, plus the 2 tricks can "interplay" with eachother.

DLP PJ: on the other hand this is native 120hz.

So you'd have to get plasma for true fullhd i guess?

Interesting.. so the DLP would only have full hd for 1080p non 3d content?

Another question.. for those with really large screens... I'm wondering how the popout effect compares... I know that for the 23" I have now.. popout is very minimal.

Well popout on pj's is killer . I think i saw it as far as 1.5-2 m with the wizard demo.

thanks for your responses. which projector would you recommend? I saw people pointing to the Acer on the forum (and many youtube videos).. but it has 1 review on amazon?

Also, I have been in and out of this forum.. and recently I read about "one" 3d movie? I know there is ways to get regular movies to kind of look 3d.. but I didnt realize there was a true 3d movie out?

I have a h5360 , its just above my head 3.5m away.

http://www.acer-euro.com/pjcalculator/

you can calculate it . Sometimes it feels like I want to move closer I'll definately experiment with distances.

I have a test with all the measurements but its in my native language. Noone asked me to translate yet, I think you can get the facts from here, the thing is it gives 750 lumen in 3d mode, and half the contrast of 2d mode. This 750 lumen is then decimated by the shutterglasses, which have around 15-20% transmittance, so they iterally eat away brightness to start with. So the 2 measures, glasses, vs 2d 60hz is quite a difference!

So how far would you say the popout is with that size? Is it usually recommended to have this mounted up or can it be to the side at an angle?

Also, have you compared the 3d experience with a DLP? What reasons would you go for DLP TV vs projector (of similar price)

Pop out is hard to measure because gameplay is dynamic, mostly. Thats why I said the 3d wizard. Maybe I have to settle for the medusa demo by nvidia for a better measure.

Im comitted to projectors. To tell an interesting thing, with an ultra high gain screen, if you stack 2x acers for double brightness you can achieve so much light that it will be perfectly usable in not too mild ambient lightning ( 30 lux), with 800:1 contrast.

This is so much contrast, as if you put a 12.000 dollar pj with 30.000 contrast into a "batcave" type of room (completely dark), and the ambient lightning that amounts to a candle.
So with the candle, the 30.000 contrast goes down to 800. So you get it. With a 10 gain screen maybe I dont have to stack the pj at all , or stack according to ambient lightning .

Theres a lot of things you can do with PJ's, like curved ultra high gain screen.

Also Mitsubishi wont publish contrast specs. But does it matter, 1000 in 3d is still better than any TN LCD, on par with commerial EIPS .

...mounting is very strict, no lens shift . So its at your side or above your head +- distance.

honestly you cant go wrong with either. I have a dlp tv and love it. if i had a projector im sure i would love it also. both have similar resolutions in 3d. And look similar in 3d. the dlp tv has 1080p 2d and excellent picture quality. I am very happy with the quality of the 3d in checkerboard mode- it works very well. the projector will take more work to get running well- you will need a screen and have to mount it (not that big of a deal and plenty of helpful enthusiasts on this site to steer you in the right direction). a tv you just plug in. the projector has the advantage of running larger screens.

im planning on adding a projector to my HTPC when 1080p 3d projectors are out. ill use the dlp for my monitor and the projector for 3d gaming and movies. its always nice to have options.

it does suck that there are no 1080p gaming devices. if you really want that i would wait until the end of the year and see whats available. the current plasmas that just came out lack 1080p gaming in 3d.

Just figure out what fits your budget and available time to install and optimize and you will be enjoying super dope 3d in no time.

What kind of "screen" do you guys recommend? I was just going to project it on a white wall....

I can put the projector pretty far back but I'm not sure if it will look too blurry...

So I think I'm going for the projector. Now the question is....

what do I need to get this working? I already have a 3d vision setup.

What mounting stuff would I need?

What screen should I get ? (if there is already a good thread.. I would appreciate it if you guys can link me)
