I thought I would share my experiences regarding 3D Vision and the latest available middle class LG 3D Passive TVs.
As I am short on time I plan on gradually upgrading this thread to completion so for the guys that are interested it might pay out to revisit this thread for a complete version of the review.
So to sum up a little bit of backgroundstory here I am a 3D game enthusiast for more than a decade and so I went with the early attempts of NVIDIA back when they first introduced stereo 3D rendering to games. Back hen I was using a combination of a CRT Monitor and the Elsa Revelator shutter glasses.
As time evolved support for CRTs got dropped along with support for OpenGL games and somehow I never could wrap my mind around the idea of having to repurchase the new 3d vision glasses and a compatible Monitor... and so I stuck to my Panasonic 42" TV screen and used it with discover glasses for my 3D Gaming (I know from a color-reproduction-standpoint anaglyph glasses are a nightmare but I got used to it mainly focusing on the 3d effect).
The main reason I could not convince myself buying a 3d vision ready monitor was the setup of my work/gaming room... where due to the setup my screen was more than 2.5 meters away from my PC and I figured it would be quite hard/expensive to find a stable dual dvi link cable going over that distance.
But time advanced and so finally I decided to purchase a new 3D TV that would enable me to enjoy my 3D gaming with full color range.
The first thing that struck me was that Nvidia chose to split 3d Monitors and 3d Tv in 2 categories and feed them with separate drivers/software namely 3D VISION and 3DTV PLAY.
The next shocker for me was that actually no active shutter 3D TV could be fed with the full 1920x1080@60Hz per eye (3840x1080@60Hz) resolution due to the bandwidth limitation of the "HDMI 1.4a" standard.
So these 2 things delayed my 3D TV purchase by more than a year until I came across a thread that would describe how to use an EDID override to make 3D Vision recognize your Passive 3D TV as a passive 3D Monitor and let you use the functionality of 3d Vision with your TV.
So I said to myself "Fuck it, let's give it a try" as this solution would solve three major problems for me. First it would let me finally play my favourite 3D games on a 42" Passive 3D TV with full colors, second it would allow me to keep my current PC <-> TV location and third it solves the HDMI bandwidth issue by first rendering the games at full 3840x1080@60fps and then sending that signal interlaced at 60 Hz with halved vertical resolution (540pixels) per eye to the TV through the HDMI cable.
Now before this thread turns into an "interlaced" vs "full resolution" flamewar, yes the halved vertical resolution results in an image quality drop but I prefer that native quick and responsive mode any time over a 1280x720 interpolated resolution that in worst case also gets some extra latency from the TV's processing.
So my first TV choice was trying to get max bang for the buck and so I went for the lower class 42" LG TV "LA3136".
So the TV arrived and after reading up a couple of EDID Override Tutorials I was ready to create my own override file and it worked great right out of the box after applying the Override. 3D Vision recognized my TV as a passive 3D Monitor and after running the useful eyeswapper app I was able to game in 3D right away.
So there was I running a Passive 3D System for the first time in my life and those are the things that made an impression to me compared to active shutter 3D gaming at 120 and 140 Hz:
The first thing one notices is that ghosting is as good as not existent if you keep certain parameters.
The 3d image stays bright and stable and I can game for hours without any tiring symptoms like fatigue or headaches or dizzyness.
The gameplay is very responsive and I couldn't notice any difference in terms of input latency/delay compared to 2D gaming on the LG, the Panasonic TV or my good old Iiama CRT Monitor.
So life was good and I kept that setup for about 3 weeks testing the heck out of it daily. Eventually I would get to the more sophisticated tests and so I quickly created a "ghosting test" where one eye would render completely white and one eye completely black.

So after running this test on the "LA3136" LG TV I went with the same test file to a tv store and tested some of the more expensive models. I was quite convinced of the higher priced model and so I returned the "LA3136" and got me a 42" "LA7408" LG TV instead.
Here a comparison shot displaying how well both TV's work in filtering the left view out when observed through the right lense (the darker the screen the better):

So as you can clearly see the lower LG TV (LA7408) significantly filters the white scene better out compared to the upper LG TV (LA3136) resulting in a better ghosting free image...

I'm waiting for 4K passive with HDMI 2.0. That way you get FULL 1080p to each eye in 3D!
I really hope Nvidia mentions something about HDMI 2.0 because soon.
I have seen the passive 3D on a 4K LG 84LM9600 84" TV in action with 3d glasses on...

And all I can say is because of its tremendous size, unless you take a few steps back, 1080p passive 3D on a 84" 4K screen looks exactly the same like 540p on a 42" in proportional distance in terms of Pixel Density... you get the same vertical line spacing that you get with the current 2K passive 3d systems...
On smaller sized 4K Displays I can imagine it being a very nice experience though.

I have a LG 3D TV and i tried the override tutorial, but didnt work.
I had to go back to 3D Vision Play. Would you have a good tutorial?
I installed the driver of a passive 3D monitor (ACER i think), but when i turn on 3D on the Control Panel, my TV does not go into 3D mode. The screen does show like it is in 3D with the images with ghosts as the 3D usually looks like when not wearing glasses, but when i put the glasses nothing happens, the TV 3D mode is not on.
Any help, my tv is 49LB6200?

If you are using the Acer Passive inf. the eyes are reversed.
Try the glasses upside down.

3.Double-click the key “InterleavePattern0.” Change the value data from “00ff00ff” to “ff00ff00”
4.Double-click the key “InterleavePattern1.” Change the value data from “00ff00ff” to “ff00ff00”
5.We need to prevent the driver from attempting to revert these values. Right-click the “Stereo3D” folder on the left, then click “Permissions.”
6.Click “Advanced.”

When you input a line interleaved format into a Passive Display using a Film Pattern Retarder, you do not need to turn on 3D. It automatically works.
If you input a Side by Side, Top and Bottom or Checkerboard format, you must turn on the 3D Mode so that the Format is converted into an Interlaced/Interleaved format that it's capable of showing.
I've no idea what you are doing wrong.
You need to make sure that you can complete the setup wizard before trying a game. If the wizard no worky, game no worky (common sense)

Otherwise, in-game convergence changes cannot be saved (Ctrl+F7), when the suggested Registry permission changes are made.

yes i do not need to turn on 3D, i know that. the tv automatically should recognize it and display the message to put the glasses on. this is a message that comes up everytime there is 3D content and it is not appearing when i do the test with 3D vision. i dont know, maybe my tv is a new model that doesnt work or could it be because i have already installed the 3d vision play and when i change to 3d vision it wont work

yes i do not need to turn on 3D, i know that. the tv automatically should recognize it and display the message to put the glasses on. this is a message that comes up everytime there is 3D content and it is not appearing when i do the test with 3D vision. i dont know, maybe my tv is a new model that doesnt work or could it be because i have already installed the 3d vision play and when i change to 3d vision it wont work

No there will be no message. TV does not recognize Line interleave pattern.
If you do everything right you just put the glases on and you have 3D

AFAIK, all of LGs 3D HDTVs are Passive, is yours Active?

As time evolved support for CRTs got dropped along with support for OpenGL games and somehow I never could wrap my mind around the idea of having to repurchase the new 3d vision glasses and a compatible Monitor... and so I stuck to my Panasonic 42" TV screen and used it with discover glasses for my 3D Gaming (I know from a color-reproduction-standpoint anaglyph glasses are a nightmare but I got used to it mainly focusing on the 3d effect).
The main reason I could not convince myself buying a 3d vision ready monitor was the setup of my work/gaming room... where due to the setup my screen was more than 2.5 meters away from my PC and I figured it would be quite hard/expensive to find a stable dual dvi link cable going over that distance.
But time advanced and so finally I decided to purchase a new 3D TV that would enable me to enjoy my 3D gaming with full color range.
The first thing that struck me was that Nvidia chose to split 3d Monitors and 3d Tv in 2 categories and feed them with separate drivers/software namely 3D VISION and 3DTV PLAY.
The next shocker for me was that actually no active shutter 3D TV could be fed with the full 1920x1080@60Hz per eye (3840x1080@60Hz) resolution due to the bandwidth limitation of the "HDMI 1.4a" standard.
So these 2 things delayed my 3D TV purchase by more than a year until I came across a thread that would describe how to use an EDID override to make 3D Vision recognize your Passive 3D TV as a passive 3D Monitor and let you use the functionality of 3d Vision with your TV.
So I said to myself "Fuck it, let's give it a try" as this solution would solve three major problems for me. First it would let me finally play my favourite 3D games on a 42" Passive 3D TV with full colors, second it would allow me to keep my current PC <-> TV location and third it solves the HDMI bandwidth issue by first rendering the games at full 3840x1080@60fps and then sending that signal interlaced at 60 Hz with halved vertical resolution (540pixels) per eye to the TV through the HDMI cable.
Now before this thread turns into an "interlaced" vs "full resolution" flamewar, yes the halved vertical resolution results in an image quality drop but I prefer that native quick and responsive mode any time over a 1280x720 interpolated resolution that in worst case also gets some extra latency from the TV's processing.
So my first TV choice was trying to get max bang for the buck and so I went for the lower class 42" LG TV "LA3136".
So the TV arrived and after reading up a couple of EDID Override Tutorials I was ready to create my own override file and it worked great right out of the box after applying the Override. 3D Vision recognized my TV as a passive 3D Monitor and after running the useful eyeswapper app I was able to game in 3D right away.
So there was I running a Passive 3D System for the first time in my life and those are the things that made an impression to me compared to active shutter 3D gaming at 120 and 140 Hz:
The first thing one notices is that ghosting is as good as not existent if you keep certain parameters.
The 3d image stays bright and stable and I can game for hours without any tiring symptoms like fatigue or headaches or dizzyness.
The gameplay is very responsive and I couldn't notice any difference in terms of input latency/delay compared to 2D gaming on the LG, the Panasonic TV or my good old Iiama CRT Monitor.
So life was good and I kept that setup for about 3 weeks testing the heck out of it daily. Eventually I would get to the more sophisticated tests and so I quickly created a "ghosting test" where one eye would render completely white and one eye completely black.
If then that scene is checked through each lense of the polarisation 3D glasses one can see how good actually the lense filters out the other eye's scene

Here a comparison shot displaying how well both TV's work in filtering the left view out when observed through the right lense (the darker the screen the better):
So as you can clearly see the lower LG TV (LA7408) significantly filters the white scene better out compared to the upper LG TV (LA3136) resulting in a better ghosting free image...
So I am using this setup now and decided to keep it and I hope this little yet incomplete review will help people with similar intentions to make up their mind...
As mentioned I will keep updating and completing this review thread so in case you have specific questions don't hesitate to ask while I shall try to answer them the best I can.
If there is demand I will go into detail about creating your own EDID overrides and setting up all other useful utilities that make 3D gaming with this setup a simple and enjoyable experience....

I really hope Nvidia mentions something about HDMI 2.0 because soon.
And all I can say is because of its tremendous size, unless you take a few steps back, 1080p passive 3D on a 84" 4K screen looks exactly the same like 540p on a 42" in proportional distance in terms of Pixel Density... you get the same vertical line spacing that you get with the current 2K passive 3d systems...
On smaller sized 4K Displays I can imagine it being a very nice experience though.

I had to go back to 3D Vision Play. Would you have a good tutorial?
I installed the driver of a passive 3D monitor (ACER i think), but when i turn on 3D on the Control Panel, my TV does not go into 3D mode. The screen does show like it is in 3D with the images with ghosts as the 3D usually looks like when not wearing glasses, but when i put the glasses nothing happens, the TV 3D mode is not on.
Any help, my tv is 49LB6200?

Registry Edit – Swapping Left/Right Eyes
1.Open the registry editor by opening your Start menu/screen and typing “regedit,” then pressing enter.
2.Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SOFTWARE –> Wow6432Node –> NVIDIA Corporation –> Global –> Stereo3D
3.Double-click the key “InterleavePattern0.” Change the value data from “00ff00ff” to “ff00ff00”
4.Double-click the key “InterleavePattern1.” Change the value data from “00ff00ff” to “ff00ff00”
5.We need to prevent the driver from attempting to revert these values. Right-click the “Stereo3D” folder on the left, then click “Permissions.”
6.Click “Advanced.”
7.Click “Add.”
8.Click “Select a principal”
9.Type “SYSTEM” and press OK.
10.Under “Type,” select “Deny.”
11.Check “Full Control.”
12.Press OK until you’re back at the registry editor.
13.Close the registry editor.
14.Reboot.
I tried. the glasses make no difference. The TV does not turn on 3D mode (when 3D is activated the tv shows a mesage to press ok, and i have to press ok in the remote cntrol, but it is not doing it) like i sad the screen does show like it is in 3D with the images with ghosts as the 3D usually looks like when not wearing glasses

If you input a Side by Side, Top and Bottom or Checkerboard format, you must turn on the 3D Mode so that the Format is converted into an Interlaced/Interleaved format that it's capable of showing.
I've no idea what you are doing wrong.
You need to make sure that you can complete the setup wizard before trying a game. If the wizard no worky, game no worky (common sense)
yes i do not need to turn on 3D, i know that. the tv automatically should recognize it and display the message to put the glasses on. this is a message that comes up everytime there is 3D content and it is not appearing when i do the test with 3D vision. i dont know, maybe my tv is a new model that doesnt work or could it be because i have already installed the 3d vision play and when i change to 3d vision it wont work

No there will be no message. TV does not recognize Line interleave pattern.
If you do everything right you just put the glases on and you have 3D
