Another sad example, that a game patch worsens the 3D unfortunately, especially in the 3D cutscenes.
So it isn't quite 3D Ready anymore.
Luckily I could restore the game to the previous version with a backup of the .exe, so everything looks fine again.

Was trying something new and was filming every cinematic/story element..... this new patch totally screwed me up. Got to wait now.


Can someone contact me via pm when its fixed? I am like half done =*(
If I delete the .exe and uncheck keep game up to date, then repair. Will that work?

I wouldn't have thought that would work because it will repair to its most recent update. That's how I'd imagine it would happen though. If I see the update before you I'll PM you.

I'm not 100% sure but i think i remember even before the patch the HighQualityShadow settings give a 2D effect in 3D Vision with or without the patch?. I have the dvd retail version, when i click the maxpayne3 desktop icon to play the game it automatically loads the auto-updater, when the patch was released by Rockstar the auto-updater made me ware of the patch, it said something on the lines of ..if i chose not to update i could not run the game, so retail users have no choice but to accept the update because you can't play the game otherwise. But, i have found that if i delete the graphics xml file in "my documents folder" inside the Rockstar Games folder the game automatically chooses a preset, i just change the resolution to suit 3D Vision (119Hz is highest for me) the game auto sets shadows to high which does not cause any issues. In my testing of 3D Vision i allways find shadows are messed up. GTA 4 was awesome in 3D for the most part but the shadows caused many issues, i think they are at 2D depth, turning off shadows takes the problem away but shadows add so much to game worlds. A compromise is needed on our part to choose the best settings when gaming in 3D. So i'm not sure if the patch has caused the shadow issues?, i can't revert pre patch state to test again on retail game not sure about steam users?. But reducing shadows down helps a lot for me. Have to say though that max payne 3 has superb depth when in 3D Vision, really really good.

You cannot revert to previous versions in Steam, but simply replacing the .exe works for me. No problems with high quality shadows.

If you don't have an old .exe, search on the internet for one, you could also use a cracked one.

HA HA! I laugh at you people with fancy rigs! MP3 on my 1 x 470 GTX is fairly splendid.

I do see minor issues in cut scenes, with certain self-shadows rendered incorrectly but gameplay is fine (apart from the rare large bodies of water). I think the issue is when using HSAO instead of SSAO. I haven't the headroom to use HSAO so I use SSAO and my shadows are fine.

What I find annoying is the increase of convergence in cutscenes. It becomes [b][i]way[/i][/b] too much. Does anyone know how to make the cutscene convengence the same as gameplay?

I use a Palit twin fan GTX 580 1.5GB, if i crank mp3 to the max and screen res at 1920x1080 119Hz in stereoscopic 3D my gpu sounds like a hoover, so it has to work hard in this game, the framerate is ok for the most part, the menu lags a bit. The shadows are at the wrong depth in 3d, many have noticed this, but it's not a game breaker for me, i realise how difficult stereoscopic 3d is to get 100% right, it's impossible to get right, you can tweak till ya drop and get it near on right, but just not quite right haha!, imho, but the depth is superb in mp3, something a lot of game devs don't get right, maybe third person perspective has better depth effect in stereoscopic 3d because some first person perspectives are rather flat and lack any 3D depth. HDAO (high definition ambient occlusion) is not recommended in stereoscopic 3d, even nvidia have stated that, but the shadows still produce artifacts even with SSAO enabled on the highest settings or even on high settings, the sun shafts in certain scenes or whatever they are called really mess up the stereoscopic 3d for me. Interesting that nvidia on Gefoce.com stated [i]Max Payne 3 3D Vision and 3D Vision Surround support is currently scheduled for a future game update.[/i] Also the game in its current state is not recommended in the game compatibility settings, some objects render at wrong depth some effects render incorrectly, but, Max Payne 3 has great stereoscopic depth and that is exactly what i like about sterescopic 3d. Some will notice the incorrect render and other issues in stereoscopic 3d more so than others. The cut scenes switch between 2d and 3d for me. I suppose we have to see if Rockstar Studio can reproduce the shadow issues post patch?.

I am going to post some screenies (when the kids have gone to bed) because I really don't have any issues with shadows. 2D sun flares yes, self shadows in cutscenes yes, but gameplay shadows are completely fine for me!

I remember being confused because people were struggling with Microsoft Flight in 3D when I was blown away by it. Posted screenies showing all was fine... Long story short - it was an SLI issue. Disabling SLI fixed the game.

I'll check back in an hour or two to post the screenies.

Sometimes shadows dont load right depending on changing config. If you change your config exit in and out.
Yes shadows in game are right.
Cutscene shadows are wrong.



I wonder if running a bootleg .exe from version 1.01 would work.

I had to check but you're absolutely right, nVidia have rated MaxPayne3 "Not Recommended"! There is something seriously afoot with those guys...
