Is there anyway NVIDIA can let the community profile games? I believe you hard code the fixes/changes for each game into the DLL. Is there anyway you can offload this work to us so we can fiddle around with it?
Developers are passionate, but gamers are more passionate about fixing problems with games. Where a developer may allocate 2-3 hours, a gamer will allocate 2-3 weeks per game. We'd be willing to learn your methodology and you would have 3rd party teams who would strive to create better existing profiles and allocate more time.
It's a win/win situation for everyone.
Don't get me wrong, you guys can still release official profiles. But giving us control over it may improve some games from "Good" to "excellent" since we'd be willing to dedicate a lot of time to profiling our favorite games.

Everyone except the NVIDIA support department - they aren't going to know what crazy profile you might be using when you call in for help. That could be worked around, though. If the drivers are using a non-NVIDIA profile, they could just pop up a brief message in the lower right every time the game starts.
Actually, maybe you could just use the message we already get that recommends game settings. When they use a custom profile show a standard (unchangable) message like "Using custom profile", then maybe the author's/profile's name, then game setting recommendations. Support could then ask the user to turn the message back on and read it to them when they call in for help.

I agree. Getting the community involved in making a product successful is always a great thing, especially when we're already passionate and dedicated to it. Instead of having to wait days/weeks to get a profile for a new game, we can help have one ready same day ... or have access to a user defined custom profile to bypass duplicate name exe issues or older games not working anymore ... or maybe stereo 3d options similar to the way the 'manage 3d settings' tab on the control panel functions. Let us help you help us /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> /teehee.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':teehee:' />

You don't even know the best yet... Or maybe I don't know, but IF they can seperate GUI and the game, that would make possible to OFFLOAD the HUD onto a secondary 2D screen ( ipod , ipad etcetc. ) , and you could make some pulsating, flaming arcade alike HUD's with pixel shaders , and nice backgrounds....
Moreover if the GUI is offscreen, it won't hurt your focus and won't mess with the force feedback shaking the screen....

There are some troubles about doing this but ironically it's not entire technically. What kind of fixes should be allowed? Let's say there are some shaders/textures which displays 2d like some flares, sky or whatever. If we could apply a fix to those to show at either background objects or not being visible at all, then what stops people from doing this for cheats? In online games walls could be made legally transparent without anticheat programs detecting it. Another thing is what kind of fixes the gamedevelopers allows for their games. Iz3d gives the possibility to a certain degree correct shaders and textures (by applying monovalue or multipliervalues in the profile) if you know their crc checksum. Texture checksums can be obtained using texmod but i don't know about shader-checksums. However iz3d seems having trouble with legally making these options available in an easy way for the community. In my understanding it's about infringing with how the game looks and modifying the shaders (=modifying programcode)... :(

Agree with op.
PC users should always be given the option to tweak, and we will find ways to improve the experience for everyone.
Countless times users have shared SLI profiles that Nvidia never bothered to develop.
HUD on another screen is a good idea, but simply let us turn the damn HUD off with a hotkey.
HUDs can ruin the otherwise immersive experience in 2D and 3D.
(A good example is the annoying team member names in L4D2).
Oh and, once again, let 3DVision users employ native 2-Camera, TRUE STEREO, solution in Crysis2.
With unlocked convergence!
The screen-space reprojection method is lame!

So that means all profiles have to be approved and signed by NVIDIA to work. And then the cheaters put in special code so their wall cheats will only work in certain funky conditions. And so NVIDIA has to not just check but deeply analyze submitted profiles, which is as much work as just making the profiles themselves.

You wouldn't want NVIDIA to waste their time analyzing community profiles. All they have to do is make a disclaimer.
On a side note, Mass Effect 2 has this annoying halo effect. Using different profiles by renaming the exe actually fixes the halo but causes another problem with the light source being offset. I would LOVE a chance to fix a problem like this or to have the control and resources to try and fix it. I bet the people at nvidia who profile the games could fix the problem, but ultimately it comes down to time and resources. They probably don't have the time to spend hours and hours trying to fix every little thing in every game.
If we had that control you would have community members who would work on creating the best profiles for their favorite games. I would spend all my time trying to perfect profiles for Bioware games. But someone else may want to spend all their time trying to perfect a Bethesda game.
I tried desperately to try and hack unreal engines CRC check on their USF shader files. I tried every possible way I could think of to try and edit the fogvolume shaders to fix the halo effect in Mass effect 2 but I failed. Their CRC or md5 check (whatever it is) prevents me from editing their core shader files.
In the back of my head I wonder what NVIDIA does to profile games. I'm so curious. I wish we had that power to do so and maybe these problems could be fixed by people who are willing to spend A LOT of time on it since they LOVE playing these games in 3D.
As for cheating, if someone wants to cheat in single player let them. In multiplayer gameguard and punkbuster usually have hacks in check (not all the time but most of the time).

Jenson is right, btw adding novint falcon FFB support to a game is a lot more involved , pixel reading, memory reading etc. And they still work with online valve games. OFC once you have really good competitive games instead of year-2-year installemnts, then its no suprise you have a dedicated stereo3d server, dedicated server for new breeds of controller schemes, so mouse players wont screw up . etc. etc.

Nvidia have a microsoft mentality to their 3d stance. I think the reason for it is all a big control thing; They want to be the gateway to 3d, and while power struggles are going on, the consumer, and competitors suffer!
