Grainy Texture (Horizontal Lines) When In 3D Mode Samsung 2233RZ 22-inch Bundle
5 / 11
Just to add to the information I have the same situation. My Samsung monitor and glasses are only a week old. I see this problem in Fallout 3 and Everquest 2 (I haven't had time to try others). In my case the game starts fine, very clear, then at some random time (usually within a few minutes) the entire screen tints green and the image seems to skip from one eye to the other, then recombine into the correct colors but with the hotizontal lines. Its so bad in EQ2 that the text is not readable. If I remove the glasses I can still see the grain. Grain goes away when the game is closed. 2D image is always crystal clear. Starting the game back up repeats the process above.
Had the problem with 1.09 and 1.10 drivers.
System: Vista 32bit, GTX285, 30% Stereoscopic (changing it does not make a difference), 2 Monitors.

Glad to see more feedback. As more we will have, surer we will be.
Personnaly I tested also the DLP projector Sharp XR-10X (which is recognized by Nvidia 3D Vision as a CRT display) at 85 Hz, in the same way I did with the photos posted before. Result? There is no lines (grainy texture) at all, it works simply correctly (in fact very well -synch at side-, I'd say). I took not photos but definately, it doesn't show the lines.
I have a CRT by home, maybe I'll test it too, in the meantime for the RMA of liquor beard...

I am about to get to the bottom of this problem once and for all.
TigerDirect.com now offers the ViewSonic version of the monitor that supports 120Hz. I just placed my order: (Viewsonic VX2265wm 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor -1680x1050 WSXGA+, 1000:1 Contrast, 5ms, 3ms GTG, DVI, VGA, HDCP, Energy Star, with Speakers.) I should get it in the mail within a couple of days.
I am currently using the Samsung 2233RZ, the monitor that originally came with the bundle. I've already "swapped out" every other piece of hardware to troubleshoot this issue -- including the video card and dual-link DVI cable. No dice, the horizontal lines are always there in 3D mode. I'm fairly confident it is a problem with the monitor, but how many of us have 120Hz LCDs laying around to test with?
Well, I will soon. I'll have two of them -- one of each brand. Fortunately, TigerDirect.com has a 30-day iron clad return policy: so if the ViewSonic doesn't fix my problem, no harm done. I'll just return it. If it fixes my problem, I can sell the Samsung used and try to reclaim some of that money.
As I've mentioned before, Samsung tech support was horrible and refused to swap out this monitor... so I'm left with my only remaining option: try the other brand.
For those of you with the same problem as me -- at least we'll have some answers soon. I've been waiting and hoping someone else would take this step and report back... and finally decided to just suck it up and compare the two monitors "side by side". (So to speak, one after the other.)
Of course, I will report back here with my findings -- good or bad. One way or another we will know for sure if it is the Samsung 2233RZ introducing this problem.

That is freakin' awesome of you! Way to take one for the team ha ha.
Yeah I still need to continue hacking away at getting a return authorization from Nvidia. Just got back from vacation so I'll start at it again... after I see your results. :)
Hey, since you're probably going to be the first user on these forums to have both monitors simultaneously and will be able to test them on the same hardware, you should do a cross comparison write-up. I.e. brightness, clarity, color, ghosting, etc. Let us know if the grass is greener!

I will be sure to compare the two monitors and post anything I can think of. Mostly, as all of us with this problem can imagine, I'm focused on this horizontal line issue. Even if Samsung is better in every other category, Viewsonic will win if I can read text in World of Warcraft. /shifty.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shifty:' />
But yeah, I'm very, very curious to see how the monitors look compared to each other. Samsung has always had great picture quality -- and I'll be the first to admit that in 2D mode my monitor looks AWESOME. Rich colors, great brightness and contrast, and playing WoW at 120 Frames Per Second is really neat. Everything looks great -- except 3D mode! (Which is ironic, it's why we bought these bundles.)
So yeah, I'll be sure to include my thoughts on color richness, brightness, contrast, ghosting, 2D mode, Windows experience, even the plastic molding on the monitor. But mostly, first and foremost, I need to know if those HORIZONTAL LINES GO AWAY!!! I'm so excited.

Just to add more fuel to the fire. I am using dual monitors (come to think about it, is that a common thread related to this problem?), anyway, I swapped the ports on the back of my video card (moved monitor 1 to port 2, etc). After doing that I have the problem less. It still happens occasionally (maybe 40% of the time) but not everytime like it did in the other DVI port.
I don't know if it means anything but I thought I would throw it out there.

Ok, my results are in. Thanks to Tiger Direct's amazing shipping, I received the Viewsonic monitor today (one day after I ordered it).
The horizontal line issue is still there. The Viewsonic monitor did not fix the problem. This is too bad, I was very optimistic considering how many other things I've tried over the last few months. I have now replaced every single component, including the cables and the operating system. I've used Windows Vista 32, 64, and Windows 7 RC. I bought a new $100 dual-link DVI cable from Best Buy. And now I've tried both brands of 120 Hz monitors. I even hooked the 3D up to my wife's computer in an effort to swap every component out, all at once. I've tried two different video cards, a GTX 260 and an older 8800 GT.
Nothing has fixed the horizontal line issue while in 3D mode.
Edit: I also want to point out that I've tried every driver release, including the betas, for the past few months. I've reinstalled EVERYTHING, including my O/S, more than once.
The ViewSonic monitor is all packed up and ready to ship back to Tiger Direct. Tiger Direct has such a great shipping and return policy -- this experiment has only cost me about $17 in shipping. I HIGHLY recommend Tiger Direct to anyone purchasing computer equipment, they have done great.
As for the 3D technology itself: my recommendation is simple. If you haven't yet invested in this technology, you might consider waiting a bit. It isn't bad, I don't entirely regret purchasing this product, and I've had some fun with it. But, it just isn't quite what it COULD be. For those of you with the bundle (or the Samsung 2233RZ), I recommend keeping what you have and not stressing out too much over it. I've tried like crazy to fix the problem, and had no luck. Just relax and enjoy your product for what it is worth. That is probably just how this technology works (for the moment).
To be fair, I wanted to point out that the ViewSonic monitor seemed a bit "easier to see" in 3D mode. I attribute this mostly to it having a more "washed out" and "brighter" look to it. The Samsung, by contrast, has richer colors and a deeper black color. Therefore, the additional "darkness" of the 3D glasses makes it a bit harder to see. Adjusting the Gamma up a bit makes the Samsung have a similar "washed out" appearance as compared to the ViewSonic. Similar, but not quite the same. I'd give the 3D edge to the Viewsonic, but just barely.
In 2D mode, the Samsung kicks the ViewSonic's butt. No comparison. The Samsung just looks BETTER. In Windows, and in 2D gaming. Richer colors, deeper blacks, etc. The decision to keep the Samsung over the Viewsonic was a NO BRAINER after I discovered that the ViewSonic had the same horizontal line issue. (In fact, it might have been worse on the ViewSonic.) Also, my particular ViewSonic had two pixels out, which is totally unacceptable for an LCD monitor in my opinion. My Samsung is perfect in that regard -- every pixel looks great.
The casing on the Samsung is superior too. Also, I prefer the single purpose monitor -- no additional speakers to contend with. I bought a monitor, not a sound system. The viewsonic should invest more into picture quality over bells and whistles. (However, unlike most reviews I read, the ViewSonic DOES have an adjustable stand. You can't adjust height, but you can tilt it and turn it to face you as desired. This was a pleasant surprise.)
The Samsung is simply a better monitor. Plagued with the EXACT SAME symptoms as the ViewSonic -- the choice is a no-brainer. Samsung all the way. Better picture quality. All of the pixels worked. Richer colors. Deeper/Darker blacks. Everything about the Samsung is perfect except for 3D mode. And at this point, I don't have a clue what causes the problem we are experiencing. Could just be the state of the technology.
Oh well, mission accomplished. At least now we have more information.

Great review with valuable info., I am contemplating buying one of the two and your post helps in both regards: which one to chose over the other and alternatively whether I should wait it out until this unwanted "interlaced" effect is ironed out. Thank you for all your work and sorry that it didn't work out with the Viewsonic for you, a sad news for all S3D gamers.
Before I give up all hope of getting a good S3D monitor, IIRC there are people with the Samsung that didn't experience this "interlaced" phenom., could these people please confirm by posting here?

What would it look like if it was interlaced? I don't have any trouble reading text in game or anything. Is it only in 2d gaming mode? Because 3d mode looks great. I haven't played anything in 2d since I bought the 3d vision kit.

Is it only in 2d mode when 3d is enabled?

The conditions that seem to produce the slight interlaced effect are:
1. Stereo driver is installed.
2. IR transmitter is plugged in.
3. Game/application is in full screen mode.
If those three conditions are met, it doesn't matter whether stereo is turned on or off; the interlaced effect will be present when in full screen mode. I think this applies even if stereo is turned off in the 3D Vision control panel but I can't remember off the top of my head (at work right now).
If you want to run a game in 2D mode without the interlaced effect and without uninstalling the stereo drivers, just unplug your IR transmitter. This tells the 3D Vision driver to use anaglyph (red/blue) stereo mode. Then just disable stereo in the 3D Vision control panel or hit ctrl-t in-game to turn off anaglyph stereo and go into 2D mode without the interlacing effect.

The conditions that seem to produce the slight interlaced effect are:
1. Stereo driver is installed.
2. IR transmitter is plugged in.
3. Game/application is in full screen mode.

How very weird. That sounds sort of like a driver thing then doesn't it? As opposed to a problem with the monitor.
Metyx, thanks again for going through the trouble of testing both those monitors. Your results tell me it's a driver issue and you just saved me and whoever else the hassle of an RMA. I guess we'll just have to wait it out and keep prodding Nvidia until it's fixed. Hopefully the fact that this thread has snowballed and gained some weight with multiple users reporting this issue will make it a bit more noticeable to the Nvidia developers.

Looking forward to the results of your testing.

I will be sure to compare the two monitors and post anything I can think of. Mostly, as all of us with this problem can imagine, I'm focused on this horizontal line issue. Even if Samsung is better in every other category, Viewsonic will win if I can read text in World of Warcraft.

I don't know if it means anything but I thought I would throw it out there.

Edit: I also want to point out that I've tried every driver release, including the betas, for the past few months. I've reinstalled EVERYTHING, including my O/S, more than once.

How very weird. That sounds sort of like a driver thing then doesn't it? As opposed to a problem with the monitor.
