Gtx 480 SLI and 3D vision single monitor. FPS hit?
  2 / 2
Do you think that a GTX 480 and a GTX 280 dedicated for Physx will be faster than 2 GTX 280 in SLI??? I will buy another GTX 480, but I can't buy 2 at the same time cause it costs a lot of money. I will use a GTX 280 for physx until I get another 480 and enable SLI system.

I am familiar with Nvidia control panel, but I've never seen an option where you choose a card for Physx. I do see an option where you can enable and disable physx, just like the SLI option. Anyway I've always used a SLI system, so maybe because I had the 2 GTX 280 connected through the SLI bridge the option to choose a card just for physx doesn't show.
So in order to see this option in Nvidia Control Panel, I have to place two video cards in the mobo without the SLI bridge, is that correct??? Is it in the same place where I enable and disable SLI and Physx??? I can place GTX 480 in slot 1 and GTX 280 in slot 3 without the bridge.

I appreciate the help...
Once you install any graphics card that is dissimilar to any other the driver will detect this and an option to select the card as a dedicated physx processing unit will appear in the nvidia control panel.

Thank you!! So If you use 2 similar cards it won't detect.

Hi Guys,

I have my GTX 480's up and running. I am now able to run Metro 2033 and Just Cause 2 at Max Settings DX 11 in 3D.

Definitely worth my investment, however I am running into some small issues due to not having the 400 series drivers available. I'm happy to answer any questions you guys might have.

Extra info: I am running on the Alienware monitor at 1080p.

I just ran throughthe first mission of BC2 at Max settings and I very rarely dipped below 50 FPS with 3D vision enabled. I was using FRAPS to verify this. Unfortunatley I am a noob when it comes to recording benchmarks with FRAPS etc. so this information is from just what I witnessed. However, I will say that 2 GTX 480s in SLI destroy my past setup of 1 GTX 295 and a GTS 250 for Physx.

As for Metro 2033, I played the first level with Max Setting with DX11 and Depth of Field off. I did experience some slow down in the area where you first see the monsters on the stairway above you but that was it. The scene where the monsters are surrounding the truck outside at night was virtually flawless. When I completed the game on my GTX 295 and GTS 250 Physx build I experienced massive slowdown during this area. However with the GTX 480s in SLI I experienced none. Also when walking through the first town / area I was able to walk about freely with no slowdown.

Please note I am using the CD install drivers for these benchmarks. I know that Nvidia is planning new drivers soon and I expect we will see an improvement from those. 3 GTX 480s would be absolutely disgusting.

I also read on Semi Accurate (I know, the name says it all Nvidia hates them etc.) that there were only 8000 GTX 480s / 470s made and it is going to stay that way. I hope that is just a rumor and not true, but if it is I hope everyone on this forum who wants new cards is able to get them.

I'll post more tomorrow when I get off from work. Off to bed!

Please Siberian Krathu, run a few benches with Just Cause 2, Metro 2033 and Bad Company 2 if possible.

I have a QX9650 at 3.8gz 4GB DDR3 1800 and SLI GTX 280. I will get 2 GTX 480 so I'm very curious about those bench tests.

Anyway I still think you can't judge the 400 series just for benchmarkking results. It's new technology that will evolve with new drivers, using new textures such as tesselations and DX11 effects. But I think one thing that I read that it seems where the 400 series crush the competition or even the 200 series is the use of Anti Aliasing, you can throw 8xAA and loose only a few FPS. Usually with the 200 series 8XAA kills the framerate in games like Metro 2033, Crysis, Just Cause 2 among others.

I'm playing Just Cause 2 now with settings maximized - 1680 x 1050 - AA off - AF16x - Vsync ON - SSAO ( which I don't know what it's for) Off and 3D Vision enabled.
I''m getting 30 fps average and this game doesn't play smooth with that framerate, but it's somehow playable. I love graphics and I prefer to sacrifice performance.

Please run a few tests with AA8x, AA off, and also with Vsync on and off. All settings maximized. I guess you play at 1920 x 1080.

Also, run some test with Metro 2033 in DX11 AA8x, AAoff, Vsync on and off. This game and JC2 are the most demanding GPU horsepower games I've played with 3D Vision till today. At least Metro 2033 is very playable at 30, 35fps, but JC2 needs at least 45 to play smooth.

Anyway why you always run benches or play games with Vsync off??? Don't you hate tearing???? I play every single game with Vsycn on cause I think it's way more important than AA considering 3D almost eliminates the use of AA. I usually play all games in 3D with AA2x or 4X if possible. But to be able to play Metro 2033 and Just Cause 2 at very high settings at least for my config I can't turn AA on, no way.

What's worth getting a third GTX 480 card if 3D Vision does not work well with 3x sli and quad sli???

Siberian,

Have you considered keeping GTS250 in system as dedicated Physx and comparing GTX480SLI with and without GTS250 for intense physx titles like batmanAA or dark void?
