3D Vision 2 IR Emitter not recognized and failure to start
  1 / 3
Hello, I recently purchased a lightly used 3D vision 2 kit from Amazon. I was going to return it because i am having some issues, but wanted to see if it might be user-error or some nuance that i'm missing. Please excuse the format as i am pasting this from another place i asked for help: My ir emitter won't turn on. Sometimes the light will come on solid red and i can't get it to turn green pressing or holding the button. Usually it blinks faintly red a couple times then turns off the light entirely, with error messages of failure to install drivers. I disconnected and reconnected many times. I uninstalled the drivers (GPU + extras) using DDU and reinstalled with the emitter connected as i saw suggested somewhere. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers 3 or more times, to no avail. I tried setting the driver manually to all the available Nvidia drivers, to no avail. The light would actually only say on (red) very rarely. Usually it would faintly blink a couple times (red) and turn off, with a "Device not recognized" notification, with the advice to disconnect and reconnect the device, and the warning that if this doesn't work it may be a hardware failure. I'm kind of thinking the emitter is borked. Also, in the device manager the driver says "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)", unless manually set, but it retains the parenthetical and says the device failed to start. I'm on Windows 10, 980TI, newest Nvidia drivers if that matters. I did buy this kit used, so i'm thinking it's broken and i should send it back. I will probably go ahead and do so unless you've experienced this or heard of it. I couldn't find much help on google.

I am the one you know from Reddit. There is something else you can try: a different USB cable, if you have only tried the one you bought.

Flashing RED means the PC can't upload the firmware on the HID device (Emitter/Pyramid). The fact that it turns dark afterwards could mean something is "cutting" the power to the USB. What you can try is plug it into a USB port directly on your PC/Motherboard. Try all USB slots and see if you get different results. If still doesn't work you could try to plug it into an external USB (powered) hub and see if it behaves the same (the emitter should keep on flashing RED until the end of time - if the HUB is not connected to the PC, but should never go DARK). In this case your Windows OS/Software is cutting the power to USB and you need to investigate the power scheme a bit more. If it still fails, the hardware is faulty (although I never ever see an emitter going faulty in more than 5 years now and have like 6 around, but you may never know ^_^). You could always ask for a replacement from Amazon and see if is the same (but only if the hardware is faulty) or you can return it and abandon 3D Vision (saaad day...) Hope this helps:)

Also make sure that all of your motherboard/USB drivers are up to date. you can use the demo version of Driver fusion and see what it states about your current drivers. http://store.steampowered.com/app/234820/ If you have any fast boot options in the bios for your motherboard, disable it, it's possible that it's not giving the drivers enough time to fully load.

What about the fact that it states "Device Descriptor Request Failed" at all times? This warning makes me think it is malfunctioning.

Might just get the premium of this program, i hate hunting down drivers. It is often such a convoluted process that i'm not sure if i'm even getting the right ones.

I haven't used the full version of the product, so I can't fully endorse it. Plus if you read through the discussions, I seem to recall user suggesting some other 3rd party apps that work. But I had used the demo previously to chase down a driver and it worked well. Some of the things that are reported can be for devices that are longer being used. Say if at one time you had a HP multi media keyboard that had keys to fast forward or pause movies. It would see the device listed and recommend drivers for it. So pick and choose what to use. You can also try http://alternativeto.net/ to find another program.

I checked again this morning before i left for work and the program finally activated, i updated all out of date drivers, but nothing changed with the emitter. I may still see if i can get a steam refund for the program though, i'm thoroughly disappointed with it after all the activation trouble, but i also troubleshoot all my family's tech issues so i though it might be useful to have, especially with unlimited computer installs. Last night while fiddling the emitter did come on solid white one time (i think (coincidentally) after manually setting the driver to the Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D Controller), but otherwise it was still the same story; still with "Device Descriptor Request Failed" next to the missing driver in the device manager. I've never seen that message before on a device, regardless of an installed driver, and it's leaving me with the assumption this emitter is malfunctioning. I think i may get a refund and try one more kit, found some cheaper on eBay, supposedly new in a sealed box, so time will tell unless i hear some promising advice before the weekend is over. I am really tired of messing with it though, it's becoming much more of a hassle than i wanted it to be.

I don't really have any mini-usb cords laying around. I might have one hidden somewhere i can try, but i don't really think that's the issue. I'll give it a shot if i can find it though. Thanks.

Once a user posted that if he wiggled the USB connection at emitter, it would mess up. So his was definitely some kind of internal problem within the emitter. (he confirmed it wasn't the cable) But for the most part, the emitter is bullet proof. Prior to getting additional emitters, I would move my emitter from one PC to another and have been using it for 5 years. Is the emitter hot? If so that would indicate high resistance/malfunctioning. Out of curiosity it it an ASUS motherboard? There were others that have had this problem as well https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/539264/3d-vision/emitter-disconneting-on-computer-boot/1/

The only time I've ever had issues with drivers not installing for my emitter is when I plugged it into a USB 3.0 Port, it's usually always either the Port or USB Cable issue...

Tried slowly inserting the usb cord, quickly, half-way, all in between, still no success.

BTW what display model do you have and what type of connection are you using? In the Nvidia control does it show a green Nvidia logo? I was curious if it was an ASUS motherboard because most of the people reporting this problem had an ASUS motherboard, might just be a coincidence. I have an ASUS MB with no issues. Have you looked in the bios/setup?

I have an Asus VG248QE, which is 3D ready with lightboost. I am connected using the DVI-D Connection (was playing at 144hz, so i know it's connected correctly). The control panel doesn't even show that section in your pic, when i click to enable it runs the setup wizard, so i can't see any of the hidden options with that logo at all. What about the bios do you mean specifically? The fast-boot options you mentioned? I haven't looked into them yet it slipped my mind.
