So I was thinking of upgrading to the gtx 650ti card. Im currently running the 550ti which is pretty solid in performance for 3D. My mobo is pci express 2.0, so would i being a performance increase at all while running games in 3D?

Here's a good comparison of the two:

Personally I went from a 550ti to a 670 but I didn't use the 550ti very long, I bought a refurb for $100 just to get 3D in the 3DPC I built until the 600s released.
Wow, those things are cheap ... and tiny! :D

I own a GTX 680, but guessing by the fact your looking at a 650ti, your on a budget.
My advice is, for 3D, if you can SAVE and get a GTX670. It has to be the best bang for your buck, and 3D really is intensive and you will see great performance from that.
If you really can not afford that, or do not wish to spend the money a 650ti will still be a good upgrade on what you already have. PC express 2.0 will make 0 to virtually no difference from what I have read.
Be careful though. Despite not hearing any news on the 700 series (maybe it's not even out this year?) normally around this time of year new cards are announced for summer. So this time is probably the worst time possibly (historically) to buy new cards.

I wouldn't worry about 2.0 vs 3.0. Its been tested before and only really matters for SLI/Crossfire. I ran some numbers on a 670 and performance didn't change one bit after I went to a PCIe Gen 3.0 mobo.
I agree with everyone else, for 3D the GPU is under far more stress than normal so it makes sense to shell out a bit, 550ti to 650ti really isn't a very big jump.

Ok thanks everyone. Yeah im on a budget so the 650ti looks like my best bet here. I agree about summer being the worst time to buy a card considering when i built my pc last summer. I purchased the 550ti and like a week later the new 600 series came out.

There's an article on Tom's Hardware about Nvidia releasing an upgraded version of the 650ti, so you might opt to wait and see how the prices look when it hits.

Then for god sake mate, WAIT! :-) prices do not drop on cards, they remain static all year (in UK at least) so jump on board with a new gtx 750ti (it may be a wait but at least you will be in sync with releases, and therefore get best bang for your buck + will be a really worthy upgrade)
Either that or follow d-man11's advice if you have a burning itch... But I would still wait if you are on a budget. It also feels so much nicer getting a newly leased card knowing it will be the best in your price range for a good 12 months.

Sup.
If you plan upgrading this year to get a solid increase in performance get a 670 at least.
If you just want a step up and want to wait for the 700 series get a lesser version that suits the performance per-dollar.
If I was you I would go out today and get a 670-680 4gb that way when you have the VRAM to make a perfect SLI build in the future.
I do not think 700 series will even be announced for another year maybe 2 years! Titan just came out like last month.
Another good habit to have is posting your cpu specs so you can get the best results from peoples responses.

MOBO: MSI MPOWER
RAM:16GB 1866GHZ ; PATRIOT
SSD:240GB MUSHKIN
GRAPHICS: 680GTX 2GB

If your on a budget its often recommended to upgrade every other generation as the real life performance improvements from one generation to the next often times is not enough to justify an upgrade.
Personally I wait for a 75-100% speed/performance improvement before upgrading.
