As ridiculous as it sounds, I received my financial aid check today (on the LAST day of school before finals, what bs!) and have decided to spend around $500 to upgrade my system.
Current system:
EVGA 780i
E8600 @ 4.4ghz
4GB DDR2
280 GTX
I would like to get one of the following:
p55 mobo
i5-750
4GB DDR3
-or-
x58 mobo
i7-930
6GB DDR3
-or
GTX 480 (keep current system)
Which would offer the best performance with regards to 3D Vision (all that really matters lol)? Keep in mind that I am in an unusual position, as my wife is going to be in Germany until around the time summer school gets out, and I will only be taking one class in the summer, so I will have nothing but time. Right now I am leaning towards the GTX 480...but do you think I would see a drastic difference in performance from the 480 if I were to upgrade the system with one of the above choices?
I know it will be faster. But will it be drastically faster? I can only get one of the above choices right now, but once the next semester starts I'll be able to get one more. I am thinking that the 480 would be good now, with the i7 system coming later in august/september (hopefully they don't give me my financial aid in december lol).
What do you guys think? With finals next week, I won't get ANY gaming done in the next week, but after that I'll be home free :) I started Assassin's Creed 2, but it runs really slow, so I need to hear from you guys to find out if I would be fine with the 280 and an i5 or i7 system, or if I should go with the 480?

the i5 is slower than the e8600, and the 930 would only be faster if its overclocked near 4 ghz. I have not had any bottlenecks with SLI 480s with e8600 @ 4ghz. I'm waiting for the Sandy Bridges before updating CPU

So you're saying that even with SLI 480's you are not experiencing a bottleneck from the CPU? I know that most websites use either an i5 or i7 system for benchmarks, how do your numbers compare with theirs?
From what you're saying I'm thinking that the 480 would be the best buy.

yep,a 480 will give you more fps in games then switching to an I5, I7 imo
Also the dx11 if a nice improvement on the visuals in games like Metro and Battlefield.
I have switched from 285GTX oc to an 480GTX and got 20 fps improvement without 3dvision and 10 fps with. (on average in games)
I'm using 4MB of DDR3 1200 with that setup
With this setup I will get the following fps in these games...
Metro2033 10fps-30fps (everything on the highest settings dx11)
Splintercell Conviction 10fps-30fps (everything on the highest settings dx10)
Battlefield BadCo2 22-40 fps (everything on the highest settings dx11)
This Saturday or Monday I will get an I7 930 with faster DDR3 and with experiment if that setup will perform even better, but I have my thoubts...
If you have the time..then you can wait and see what the rersults are here, when I get the new hardware...

yea i wouldnt worry too much about the processor if you get a 480 , the processor wont hinder the cards preformance infact it will help.
If you decided to upgrade you are probably better off upgrading to an i7 as these puppies are excellent. At the moment i have an i7 965 extreme with two gtx280`s.
The i7 I have is one of the top of the ranges and is very good you will find that if you buy the more reasonable priced i7`s you can oc it to get real good results.
I have played batman arkham asylum and have everything on max and runs sweet.
As others have said there is no real point upgrading to the i5 you are better waiting and saving for a nice i7 :) well in my oppinion :)

I seriously doubt this is true. My old E8500 at 4.2Ghz was definitely holding back my GTX285s in SLI when I had them. When I went to i7, I got better performance in all games and benchmarks with the i7 at stock speeds, and got even better performance when I overclocked the i7. There is no way I would put dual cards like GTX480s on a Core 2 series CPU now.

While that may be true for SLI, I don't think the same holds true for single card setups. So for the time being, it looks like I'll be fine with a single 480 and the C2D. I wonder if there will be a replacement for the i7 coming out this fall?

The hardware out there right now is nice, but just save and wait a little while.
Then you can get a 6 core or maybe 8 core processor, an SSD drive, ect..

But I think I'll wait to place the order until after I take my last final. That way I won't have to worry about it distracting me from studying lol.
