Quadro 4000 + Quad-Buffered Stereo / 3D?
Hi,

I work as part of a visualization group in a university and we've been using a Quadro FX 1800 with quad-buffered stereo under Windows 7. We're looking to upgrade to a board that will support stereo in Linux, our preferred environment, and won't have as many problems with firmware (Quadro FX 1800 needed VBIOS updated not supplied through Dell and getting 3D to work just isn't straightforward or guaranteed with this card).

I have a few questions concerning the Quadro 4000. This card is not listed under supported boards for quad-buffered stereo in Linux here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_pro_gr...ards_linux.html

However, it IS listed as supported by 3D vision pro for Linux here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-pro-requirements.html

I checked the driver page for "3D vision for quadro" drivers, and it does not mention Quadro 4000 even for Windows 7:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-3d-vis....49-driver.html

Ultimately, I just need to know if this card will work with regular 3D Vision (which we already have) under Linux and Windows 7 using quad-buffered stereo. We don't care about the DirectX stereo, because we're using it with custom programs written in OpenGL.

Thanks
Justin

I think the Quadro 4000 isn't listed there because it is one of the newer onces.

I would say it will work with Quadbuffered Stereo simply because it is one of the best quadro cards and looks like a successor to the FX 3800. So if you can wait a bit of time, then WAIT and I think you will see the listing on the nvidia page.

The other fact is that this card looks like as if you need a extension bracket for the VESA connection cable, if you are using it...

EDIT:

If you are looking at the page of PNY, they already list "Full OpenGL quad buffered stereo support" and also "3D Vision Pro : Support via 3 pin mini DIN". If you buy it, you will get the stereo bracket right next to it!

I think nVidia doesn't list it right now, because PNY lists these new cards already for the newer 3D Vision Pro series! (Of course they will support the normal 3D vision too..)

Page: PNY Quadro 4000 Specifications

EDIT (why the fu.k don't I search for website before editing -.-):

Here you got your personal listing for 3D Vision Pro FROM nVidia:

3D Vision Pro Requirements

and here they are introducing the technology correctly: Quadro Fermi

So because you are working for an university I think you could grab 3D Vision Pro (higher price). But it also will have newer and nicer features than the normal 3D Vision ;) (Read on page or several blog's).

I will have a look if these newer cards are compatible with the "old" 3D Vision too ;)

No idea myself, but I do know that Nvidia Quadros have certified partner drivers. GTX GPUs are geared towards gamers. Quadro drivers will not work with GTX GPUs. http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/gpu-accelerated-applications.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/autodesk-design-suite.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/autodesk-3ds-max.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-desktop-gpus.html

Best bet is to look at what your software requirements are. They will have recommended hardware, and you can tell if it requires Quadro or Geforce. Here, for example: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/syscert?siteID=123112&id=18844534&results=1&stype=graphic&product_group=6&release=2014&os=8192&manuf=1&opt=1

3ds max runs just fine on a regular Geforce graphics card.
