We test pretty much test every TV we support. This includes adjusting size for convergence, depth, etc. The Sony is a grea example of that since it advertises that is like a 150" TV, but in reality it's more like 90, so we have to adjust the settings.

We've been releasing 3DTV Play Updates in between driver releases for a while now. It allows us to add support for products without requiring you to download an entire new driver. Eventually the support will be rolled into all new drivers going forward.

I can see why you don't want folks playing on untested equipment, as a poor experience with it could easily mar the 3dvision brand; however, perhaps a "generic hdmi 1.4" option for those of us who don't mind adjusting the convergence point ourselves? You could even put a big red NOT RECOMMENDED by it. I wouldn't mind /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

OK so today I tested the HMZ-T1 twice at Sony store and then I put my preorder. I've been researching about this product and following user forums & reviews for months, even downloaded user manuals from Sony site. I've been using 3D Vision with Samsung 2233RZ since it first launched in 2009 and never played 2D again; And also I play on Panasonic VT25 50' TV through 3DTV Play, so I have a fair knowledge of what good and bad 3D can be. For those of you who are planning to buy one of these, here's my advice and honest opinion based on my testing and impression of the HMZ-T1 and all the information that I have gathered so far. Before you pay premium and spend your hard earned cash, remember the following IMPORTANT points first:

1 - The HMZ-T1 can get quite personal in terms of fitting, so I HIGHLY recommend that you visit your nearest Sony store and try it first. Everyone's head size, eye level & seperation, nose level and comfort are different. It has to fit YOU perfectly, and you have to get to the "sweet spot", otherwise it causes blurring, and the image loses clarity. Be patient and ready to spend fair amount of time to adjust fitting. Among customers who already got thier shipment, there are some who are totally disappointed and there are some who absolutely love it.

2 - There are mixed reviews of perceivable screen size. However when I tested it, it CLEARLY looked like a screen around 90' to 100' about 2.5 meters away. If you use the light blockers, then you can deceive your eyes to think its a bigger display watched from more distance, because you can't see outside world objects to compare the distances with. But if you don't use blockers and see under the hmd and compare the screen distance to other outside objects, then you see it clearly.

3- If you are near sighted and always need your glasses like me, and you think you won't need to wear glasses coz the hmd is right up your eyes, then you are wrong. You'll definitely need to have glasses on, but the good news is, it perfectly fits over prescription glasses. Again, your situation could be different than mine.

4 - The image quality is sharp and stunning, but if you encounter poor blocky image, then blame it on source of playing content. We PC gamers can get crisp graphics with our powerful graphics cards, but I wouldn't recommend HMZ-T1 for console gaming coz consoles aren't powerful enough so they turn down image quality to keep up with frame rate. Antialiasing is poor on most 3D PS3 titles. For example Killzone 3 looked absolutely awful and blocky, but MotorStorm was fair, but still nowhere near PC. Another reason I say PC gaming rules :). Here's a link of MotorStorm in 3D, you can see how blocky it is:
http://www.gamespot.com/motorstormapocalypse/videos/motorstorm-apocalypse-demo-6286108

5 - In order to get sound on the headphones for PC gaming, you have to make sure your graphics card carries sound signal through HDMI out. Usually the sound card has to be connected to graphics card's "audio in" connector, otherwise you'll need adapters and splitters to input sound from your sound card to the Processor Unit of the hmd. Sound quality is fairly good, but not the quality of gaming headsets.

Again I recommend trying it at nearest Sony store, and don't be the least shy to spend a good long time testing it. I honestly think the image quality and clarity is amazing, but the product itself is overhyped. It's got some issues with fitting, "sweet spot" positioning of eyes and overall comfort. It's GREAT but not WOW. The FOV is not as large to feel total immersion, it just feels like watching a much bigger TV but not a movie theatre. I loved it though and ordered one, but I asked the guy for return policy...it's 15 days lol so I'm still cautious. If you are a flight sim enthusiast like me, then using it with TrackIR would be stunning. But for COD etc it's just a bigger screen. Hope the tips were of some help.

Andrew, seeing people post on here on how they've gotten NVIDIA 3DTV Play to work by plugging the HMZ-T1 into a compatible receiver has got me thinking - does this mean on the other hand that if I want to run the HMZ-T1 with an AV receiver that is NOT explicitly supported, it won't work even after you've release the update?

I had always assumed that you needed the final output device to be tested (hence "adjusting size for convergence, depth, etc." would make perfect sense) instead of a device that justs passes through the signal to the final output device - what would the point in testing receivers for things like convergence or depth be if you don't know what's being connected on the other side?

Bottom line is that I was just about to get an Onkyo HT-S 3405 home cinema system for use with the HMZ-T1, but now I've seen that the HT-S 3405 isn't explicitly certified for 3DTV Play (although for instance the Onkyo HT-S3300 is, and there are tons of models from Onkyo that are probably very similar). Does this mean I wouldn't be able to use this particular model with the HMZ-T1 as it's not on the whitelist?

Just surprises me that the whole "we need to test it first to ensure the best consumer experience" argument would fall apart completely if you could use the HMZ-T1 without any certification as long as you have a certified receiver but not use it (even with certification) as long as the receiver is not certified...

You pretty much nailed everything there. The best comparison for the "sweet spot" issue is the 3DS, except the point of perfect focus is even smaller.

Although you are mostly correct about consoles and anti-aliasing (not to mention lower fps!); you NEED to try Shadow of the Colossus in 3D on the HMZ1. Because it is an older game with PS2 era textures and polygon counts, they didn't have to skrimp on resolution or ani-aliasing to get it to run on the PS3 Ditto for the PSP GOW remakes, they look nothing short of awesome on the HMZ1. That said, I'll still be hitting refresh on this thread for the 3dVision update. I am literally dieing to try HMZ1 + 3d + Dirt 3 + 1:1 IR Head Tracking.

3DTV Play Update should be out within the next 2-3 days.

Again i'll respond back here when its available.

Speaking of testing everything thoroughly. Not sure if the 11/10 update was supposed to support the HMZ1; however, I get the following error while running the wizard when trying to switch from the Acer HN274H to the Sony HMZ1.

error in stereo Driver,
nvapi stereo is activated returned - after stereo was enable by default with settings setdefaultstartupmode true.

I agree with most of what you say although I would hate to be standing in line at that Sony store. It took me about 2 days of playing games/movies while fiddling with adjustments to get the comfort and sweet spot satisfactorily resolved and they are probably not going to let you swap out head pads which really for me was the most important adjustment.

Also regarding just a bigger screen for COD I would disagree. The brightness and lack of ghosting along with the image quality and clarity you mention makes this to me my preferred 3d device for almost anything but rts games. (that's over my 82 inch Mitsubishi dlp and my acer 27.)

No it was not included in that and I responded in the 285.79 thread.

We will have an update soon for it. Should be online Monday or Tuesday.

I got my hmz-t1 today. Tested around a bit.
Blu-Ray Video with Power-DVD works already without Andrew's forthcoming Playtv 3D update. Actually Playtv 3d isn't needed for Blu-Ray 3D at all.
If you also want to use your hmz with nvidia 3d vision and playtv 3d for games right now, look on the internet for an inf file with proper edid information.
Exchange drivers for your hmz with the information from that inf file and you are ready to play PC games, as well.
Worked like a charm for me.
And very impressive picture and 3d quality, as well...

You will get more immersion from a projector, but to each their own. I personally didnt like the HMZ when I tested it. MAKE SURE YOU TEST IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT! It may not be for you. If you want headtracking along with this you will probably be disappointed. But Id like to hear what people think when they get theirs

Better than before, but still doesn't work. I can get though the setup wizard just fine now, and the test stereoscopic 3d button works correctly on the hmz-t1; however, all other options are greyed out, I can't set depth or hot-keys. and ctrl-T won't activate 3d in Skyrim. Also, my HN272H doesn't appear to work now either. Will keep trying :(

Edit 1: Got the HN272H working again with a reboot; apparently, having it run through the passthrough port on the hmz-t1, while running on its own HDMI cable also, wrecks havok. I had two copies of it in the control panel, and the resolution of the "test 3d" button, was up in the millions before the reboot.

I also was able to get the depth up, by changing it while still on the HN272H; and I can see the difference from "test 3d" on the Sony HMD.

However, I still can't activate 3d. Could this be because of the built in emitter on the HN272H? Does 3dtv play require the dongle emitter to work? Thanks!

Edit 2: Got the Sony HMD working on my other pc, that has the emitter dongle. This pretty much confirms that the built-in dongle wasn't unlocking 3d TV play correctly. Was able to briefly try out Stereoscopic 3d + 6DOF 1:1 headtracking on Dirt 3. The effect is quite immersive and not nauseating at all :) I also gave Skyrim a try, and WOW, I didn't know 720p could look this good. Of course the FXAA 8X anti-aliasing helps, but still those OLED displays in the sony are nuts; I was actually expecting a poorer contrast ratio than my DLP's, but the HMD blows anything I've seen out of the water. One small gripe: The 3d still seems a bit weak to me. Perhaps you guys should have went even lower than 90 inches in your profile :)

Really appreciate the extra effort Nvidia has put in to support this. Thanks!

I'm having problems installing 3dtv play (trial version) on my computer=(.

My setup is
intel core i5
asus gtx 560 DCII oc
8gb ram
windows 7
Monitor is hmz-t1.
Driver 285.62

I have installed the trial version (I think) and the 3DTV Play Support Update Utility.

Now I only get a black screen when I use the setup wizard in the nvidia control panel but
before I got a message saying:
NvAPI_Stereo_IsActivated() returned 0 after stereo was enabled by default with settings -> setDefaultStartupMode(true)

Other people have had the same problem with other displays and the suggested method is
to set the monitor refresh rate to 120 but I cant choose that as an option.
The highest value is 60hz.
Windows recognizes the sony hmd though and the correct resolution.

Any ideas?
Any more info i should give?
