cant get mkv to play
  1 / 2
I have a 3D Mkv file that will not play in any stereoscopic player..

if I open the file in media player classic - it shows the split windows of the 2 sides of the image.. but when I try to open in nvidia stereoscopic.. it wont play.. when I try to open it in tridef it wont play.. both just lock up.. when I end the task in taskmanager - it gives me a long list of crap that isnt really any kind of error.. just talks about the codecs.

I have installed klite.. cccp.. matroska.. I cant get it to load.. :(

tridef tells me I dont have the correct direct show filters installed.. when I uninstall and re-instal klite I dnt get the error about directshow.. it just locks up and doesnt do anything :(

Any ideas.. thoughts... ??

the mkv is a 25gb movie :)

The NVIDIA 3D stereo player does not support MKV format.

Just convert the video file to another format and it will open up fine. Its too bad nvidia's own badaboomit won't work with the GTX 480. It was a great program, but I am sure they will release a new version soon.

I get MKV video working perfectly in Stereoscopic player as well as Zalman's edition of stereoscopic player. The Nvidia edition should also work.
All I need to do is to install Haali's Matroska splitter (it should come with almost every new codec pack too).
Get it directly from the official developer adress : http://haali.su/mkv/

Yes, they are working on an updated version which will make use of the Geforce 400 family and provide much better encoding performance.

No it doesn't break it, it doesn't change anything at all other than the fact that it will now open on the 3D Vision player software. I have done this with 2 or 3 videos from the 3D Vision Blog. I used AVS4YOU, but its not free and I already own badaboomit, so I'll just wait for the new version to come out.

As Blackshark says the nvidia stereoscopic player should play mkv-files without problems. Another way to play almost everything out there in an easy, one setup thingy is install the k-lite codec pack. Enables viewing of mkv's and probably most other formats.

I use mostly my own MKV files from my own stereo videos and they work fine. You can get copies from here : http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=2020

These are 720p files, I remember when I tried to make a 2x 1080p side by side video tests, some video players and some codecs has trouble opening the video due to the gigantic picture size. Like the picture was too big and some portion of the software would trigger some failsafe mechanism to prevent the app from crashing by refusing to decode the video.

If your file is encoded side by side at full resolution (2x1920x1080) you may be hitting this issue, if it's something else then I don't know. Ususally for high resolution, an over/under format is recommended to avoid using extreme picture sizes.

I wantto drop kick this file.. media player will open it.. but nothing stereoscopic will play the file.. it is a blu-ray rip.. so it could be the 1080 problem.. :| but why would the regular video players play it with no issue..

Converting it to dvd :( going to loose the hell out of quality but my only real option.. I really want to watch this..

I think it depends on which version of DirectX the video player was designed for display.
Older video players have limitations on the size of the frame that were small, in the old days it was 2048x2048 max then it increased pregressively as video because higher and higher difinition, I do not know what is the maximum size allowed with the latest version of windows media but it's very high, however the safety caps withing the software that were designed to prevent the old apps from crashing are still there and prevent the application from opening or displaying such a video.

You do not need to scale down all the way down to DVD resolution, you can only resize horizontally. I think you could even avoid reencoding by resizing on the fly using an avisynth script.
