Current state of 3D?
  1 / 3
hey there, i was an earlyish 3D gamer, back in the CRT days, had a nice blacktron 120hz etc, now ive got a dell 3011, and have some time for gaming and wondered what the current state of 3D gaming is? ive got ir emitter & glasses, no leads - i presume its going to be an eyesore if it even works.. so whats the monitor situation in a nutshell? are there ones that work really well or is everyone waiting for G-sync? cheers!

That's a great monitor for normal use, I've seen it up close. It's not going to work for 3D though, except for red/blue style. Current hardware requires either a fast refresh of 120Hz, or 3D TVs with frame-packing lowering the resolution. That monitor doesn't do either. Generally speaking, you start with the glasses, as they tend to dictate what you can use.

If you must buy today, I say hands-down the Asus VG24QE - Moddable to G-sync if you so choose - Beautiful 3D at 120Hz - Beautiful 2D at 144Hz - Portrait mode if you're feeling sassy If you can wait, then the Asus RoG Swift PG278Q coming in a few months - G-sync built in - 3D (still unconfirmed?) at 120Hz - 1440p resolution - No 144Hz If you can wait till Christmas, Oculus Rift Retail? ;)

I personally like the VG278H. Nice size, includes the glasses and emitter you'll need. However there are a few new ones coming out/just released, so might be worth waiting to see how they stack up.

Also I am compelled by my charter to note that you should consider a projector. A projector would be a nice adjunct to your already killer monitor, and I suspect you will not be as happy with 3D gaming monitors (all TN). Projector in 3D is truly mind blowing. About the same price as a monitor.

I might be in the minority here, but i wouldnt buy 3d screen over you current one. To me 27" or 24" 3d monitor is not immersive at all. I have Dell U2711 and benq 24" 3d vision 2 monitor, and id choose dell over benq in a heartbeat. This is coming from 3d enthusiast who owns 3d tv, 3d pj, 3d hmd and a standard 3d pc monitor. And current 3dv state is not good, hardly any game is 3d vision ready anymore. However if you have the opportunity to go with projector, id get that.

Or is it a similar situation to the monitors, where there's something in the near future that's better to wait for? I used to be into projectors when I had the space, but I've never had a 3D one so I'm not sure what the best one is

The two best ones still seem to be HD5360BD and Optoma HD66. For projectors there isn't anything I've seen that would suggest waiting. No GSync, no higher res, no HDMI 2.0, big nothing in terms of advancements. Having said that, the current gen are frickin' sweet for $500.

I can't recommend a 3D projector highly enough! I picked up the Acer 5360BD projector a few weeks ago, and apart from the fact I can't use the NVidia 3D Vision 2 glasses I already have for my VG278H, and its not a short throw projector, its absolutely brilliant. I purchased it used for £375 with only 300 hours on the bulb, with a pair of Acer 3D glasses included. 100" image, no ghosting and minimal rainbows in 2D use is great. I'm still getting used to the 720p image compared to 1080, however its a small trade-off, and it means I my SLI 670's will always get a constant 60 FPS in all games currently no matter what settings I use. Since the day I got the projector I've not gone back to the Asus VG278H, which is a bit sad, but its always good to have a backup I guess. At 100" image size its far more immersive, the depth (with registry hack) is freaking amazing, and it just can't be beaten. The 5360BD is bright enough not to require special treatment, I'm projecting it onto my lounge wall painted pale Magnolia and it looks perfect. If you have a decent sized room with good blinds/curtains you really should consider the possibility of a projector, because even highly recommended LCD 3D certified screens like the VG278H can't begin to compare to it. It really is like having a window into another world on your wall :-)

Ive got a projector - bought it for £150 - 85hz.. bloke ebayed it saying he watched 1 football match with it, and he was telling the truth - i checked in the firmware and it said 2 hours gone on the bulb. bargain! the only thing i dont like is the 1024 resolution.. i remember playing fear in 3D was really good.. and got into racing games too.. and morrowind.. id definitely upgrade to a good HD projector.

Guys, is Nvidia's 3D vision fully 'stereoscopic'? I am keep hearing news about needing a fixed 120FPS on a 120Hz monitor which REAAALLY worries me. Is it even possible to achieve that on 1440p monitor?

you dont need 120fps, and the 120hz is so that you get 60hz in each eye so it doesnt flash as much and cause strain :]

I tried to ask a few devs to look into it after showing them a working demo, proving that it could be done. No-one cared which is a shame. Also, +1 for 3D projector. The high pixelation will be annoying because of low resolution on such a huge screen so I would recommend familliarising yourself with different AA methods, especially SGSSAA and downsampling. Added advantage of 3D projector is that you can watch all your movies on the big screen. Also, check out this project: http://www.svp-team.com/ This calculates in between frames from individual pixel trajectories of any video, to make standard 24fps movies into 120fps movies IN REAL TIME. The difference in staggering, although you will need a very powerful CPU. Also, I have tested a plethora of glasses for 3D projector + 3D vision, including 3D vision 1 and 2 glasses. The best combination by far I have found is DLP link "pgd-150". Absolutely 0 ghosting! There is a generic version of these glasses which is cheaper.
