256 (3D Surround) Driver pushed back for Summer release.
Stupidly I recently spent over £1600 and bought 3 x Acer 23.6" 3D widescreen LCDs, a pair of 3D steroscopic glasses and 2 x 470GTX cards and was anticipating the new 256 drivers to blow me away. I've always been an NVidia fan ever since my experience of ATI and their crazy pot luck driver support! However I am totally dismayed by NVidia in 2010, the latest 470GTX drivers don't have 3D Vision drivers with them, instead I need to use the 197.41 drivers and on that page is a link to the 3D Vision drivers???

True, the the latest GF100 drivers don't have 3D Vision support yet, which I belive is a strong indicator of the R256 being very close to release.

2 x 470GTX SLI'd cards should be way better than 1 285GTX card and it's barely noticable. It all looks like a right mess, maybe the 256 drivers are the way forward but right now I'd say NVidia look a mess.

If you don't see a noticable increase in performance between a GTX285 and 2(!) GTX470 in SLI then either something is very wrong with your system or your CPU is simply way too slow. The increase in speed is way beyond 200%

Professionally I work in high end 3D simulation and we use NVidia for our display system, we recently upgraded to have 2x 5600 Quadro cards in SLI, the difference is also barely noticable. I have friends who have SLI who have also told me that the difference is barely noticable. I'm starting to form the opinion that SLI is a gimmick designed to make us buy more cards!

I have never worked with Quadros so I can't comment on their performance, but pretty much all reviews show a staggering scalability of GF100s in SLI. In fact the scaling surpasses any MGPU solution seen to date, regularly achieving 100% increases in performance. Also, microstuttering has been decreased if not eliminated. Again, this might be your systems fault. Does your mobo offer the full x16 2.0 PCIE lanes to both cards?

Considering NVidia has shown demo's of their surround gaming (and 3D surround) and ATI have had working released drivers for months with this technology then why is NVidia holding back even a limited driver release of this technology?

I think you have your timeline a bit confused there. It took ATi more than 4 months to get proper driver support for EyeFinity after the feature was made available to its customers. I'd rather Nvidia get it right before releasing it and not using us as guinea pigs for an unstable tech-

I'm bitterly disappointed in NVidia I'm considering packing up everything I just bought and sending it back, it's not worth shelling out a small fortune on technology that doesn't exist/isn't ready and by the time NVidia do release the sacred 256 drivers the cards/monitors will probably be cheaper anyway. My experience of other software that promises the earth and isn't released with what they cliam, is that it either fails to achieve the target set, or falls short of expectation. For now I'm going to stick with my flawless 285GTX and single display. 3D makes me feel sick anyway, but the way NVidia are holding back like this makes me feel worse, clearly something isn't right with this tech otherwise we'd have had something.

Son't you think you should have been aware prior to your investment that the tech doesn't exist yet? If you are in fact as familiar with software development as you suggest, then you should know how soft those deadlines can be. Also, why didn't you try 3D Vision before shelling out for it, might have saved you a lot of money adn nausea. Finally, are you actually aware of the magnitude of change R256 is introducing? 3D Vision Surround and Surround are just a part of the package. The rest is ridiculous backwards compatibility plus the incorporation of almost the entire mobile GPU segment into one unified driver. If Nvidia got this wrong, they would be in very serious trouble. I think we just have to chillax and see how it plays out. I'd rather have optimized and delayed drivers, than barely stable and just in time ones.
bringing back hardware due to drivers not being released is a bit over kill imo.

Patience. Plus ATI hasnt even released their 3d solution yet , if they did it would be different.
A while back i asked andrew this question on twitter. He told me two screens are supported.

I really hope this will be true. I've got two Acer H5360's waiting for the surround driver.
Hey , don't stand still! Try stacking pj's for double brightness. Im going to try it around next week.

Guys I can tell you for fact that if the driver was ready they would release it. They're not going to hold back something if it's ready. Why would they? Just for $|-|it's and giggles? If it's not out it means it's not ready.

And people wanting a date. Please, get a grip. IF they give a date and then a bug shows up, then they have to turn around and let everyone down and have everyone pissed off. Why would they want to do that?

Honestly, I'd much rather have them take their time and do it right then to try and rush it out the door. The latter scenario is only going to lead to issues which none of us want to have to deal with.

Have some patience boys.

Single screen. It's what's been keeping me following this.

Waiting until after 3DTV Play, though, see how it gels and get all at once.

Prices, too, keep me hobbled right now...

...or rather, a lack of bank balance...

I believe this link has always said "coming soon", it's the link towards the bottom of that page in "For a complete list of system requirements for NVIDIA Surround Technology, click here." that indicates summer.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/3DV_System_Re...Technology.html

COMING SOON
Support for NVIDIA 3D Vision Surround Technology on GeForce 400/200 Series GPUs requires NVIDIA Driver Release 256* or higher. (*Scheduled for Summer 2010)

It still says summer.

Well, part of the issue with the 256 drivers is they're going to be huge - there's so much stuff going into those drivers. So the 3d vision surround could totally be done & ready to release right now, but 3dtv or laptop drivers or ... any number of other things totally not related to this not ready for release. Since it's all part of release 256, everything would get held up by one item in the drivers.

A) nobody even truely knows what's going to be in the 256 release. The only item that really has been confirmed is the 3D Vision Surround.

B) There are alot of things that may or may not be dependent upon one another. For example, maybe they have gotten surround to work with a single card but not with SLI. Do you think that they would release the technology, which in reality needs SLI, without SLI support?

Anyways I refer back to my previous comments. It will come out when it's ready......

Well in my opinion it's a good idea to wait a while, the LCD monitors available at the moment are hardly perfect. Single screen is also the only sensible option for me at the moment, aspect ratio is already 16:9, which is a little too wide for me. That's gonna make 48:9 with 3 monitors :o . Then of course you have the dreaded bezels [nearly an inch wide on 1 Acer].

Back on track, I think nVidia are probably working their little socks off to get this software out, and despite a recent mishap, they've got a great track record of bringing out solid drivers, so I'm in the 'be patient' camp.

I'm fairly confident I don't intend trying the hassle of figuring out convergence and depth on all three screens while maintaining the illusion of a blended whole in anything other than a spinal halo...
