Well, I left the game run for 2hours yesterday, just idling there in town.
The 3D worked perfectly after that.
No 3D drop-out after that for the next 30 minutes.
So.... Did anyone monitored the VRAM usage of the game? I wonder if there isn't a memory leak somewhere...
I noticed the same behaviour on a game when a memory leak is triggered:
- 3D breaks
- 3D disables (emitter on but everything is pure 2D)
- game stutters.
I am wondering if this isn't the problem here as well...
I've been monitoring the memory usage as I do crash tests. I can say with strong assurance that the VRAM is not leaking in this test, I see a flat line for as long as it runs at about 3100MB. No change at crash.
Regular RAM might be a problem. I sometimes see a tick up in memory usage right before it crashes, of maybe 200M out of 8G machine. Total used is 6.7G or so, so you would not expect that to matter. The memory line definitely does not keep climbing, like you'd expect if it was a true memory leak. My best guess is that tick up in memory is a symptom of the problem, not the cause.
Yupp, totally agree.
Oh well at least now we know for sure... very strange behavior though...:-s

Anyone else still talking with R* about this?
Their support still has me collecting information, sending in msinfo.txt files, etc. It may help to ask for your case to be escalated, as I have.
I am getting so sick of this piece of shit. After every crash it takes multiple restarts to even hope to have 3D work again, and even with a PCI-E SSD the game takes fucking ages to load. If any application grabs focus from the game the 3D driver crashes.

Just tried 353.06. Game ran ok for 12 minutes and then crashed.

bo3b:
One thing I suspect is that the bugs are in some way connected to the framerate. So either something like a leak that gets worse per frame, or a probablistic bug that has a chance to happen per frame, more frames = more chance of crashing.
If this is the case, then your attempts at configs and such might reflect more how fast each config runs rather than any one setting being the kiss of death. Slower configs crash less, faster configs more.
Just a guess, might be worth keeping FPS in account when looking at how fast things fail.

If you are getting crashes from the social club application thinking you have logged in somewhere else, delete the social club folder in /documents/rockstar games. I was having this problem, deleting that has stopped that crash happening for me.
I think if any application grabs focus from the game it will crash the driver. I had a crash that had the same errors/faulting module as the social club problem above when skype decided it needed to tell me I could not receive any messages unless I signed in.
Anyone else noticed the convergence bar in the game menu changes colour? Does this denote anything happening with the engine?

I thought the same thing, then I figured it out, the colors change based on the current character you are playing, just like on the main map all the relevant markers are coded per character.
Franklin = Green
Michael = Blue
Trevor = Orange
Haven't gotten farther than that, lol - wonder why!
My results are the same as everyone elses, 353.06 slightly more stable than 352.xx but 3D breaks, launches broken or it crashes.
Using the 347.88's - No Crash, No Grass either, but can play the game.
Am I safe in assuming that, at least for this game, we would be happy with grass on anything higher than 'Normal' but with the stability of the drivers that don't cause crashes?
Is it possible the GRASS itself is the issue? Maybe R* couldn't get it right in 3D and intentionally broke it in the name of stability? Then Nvidia finds a way to fix the grass, as in both drivers released SINCE launch, but unintentionally teases out that instability that R* is trying to fix or hide?
Just a thought,
~Nutz
Side Note, I am like addicted to getting this game working, I can't even focus on any other title,
But!! Batman's coming soon and with ANY luck, they will maintain the 3D perfection they have ensured in prior titles, and this might (and I stress might) shift my focus entirely away from GTA V for the foreseeable future.
It just sucks, I'd almost just rather the game be broken with no current hope of fix, but starting this game up and seeing it run in proper 3D must be something akin to laying eyes on the 'Mona Lisa' for the first time.
Simply Frustrating!

I'm not certain the crashing is a R* issue.. 350.12 drivers DO NOT CRASH in 3D. They are not perfect and DO have other issues but I'm not crashing to the desktop when I use this version. Played for hours.. The only time I needed to restart the game was when 3D dropped out but was always able to finish the missions/goal first without crashing.
Wouldn't this suggest that the crashing might be an NVIDIA issue to resolve if different drivers resolve crashing?
I am still having to force AFR2 also (and some using Max Payne 3 profile).. another sign NVIDIA hasn't fully optimized the drivers for 3D..
Did they over-extend their dev team with with the GameWorks program or something? NVIDIA has been known in the past for solid drivers and also release BETA drivers for the public to test.. Beta drivers dried up and we're stuck with lousy drivers that somehow get WHQL certified..
Meanwhile we try to fix the problem ourselves because we are desperate to simply play the game properly.. If PC gaming is to make a big comeback, THIS CRAP needs to change immediately!
All my friends heckle me because when they play a game, the press power and grab the joystick.. When I want to play a game, I'm sitting here reading forums grasping for answers... BS if you ask me.

I agree with Laithan computer are not tested just released.
To name a few games
AC Unity
Far Cry 4
Watch Dogs
Mortal Kombat X
The witcher 3
GTA 5 still 2D or 3D crashes to desktop unplayable due to the save system.
Project Cars Sloppy no gamma or contrast control
Battlefield Hardline crashes to desktop 5 different drivers were used to narrow down the problem and still crashes to desktop.

crashing is a not R* issue. Game works almost perfect under 350.12 + helifax fix for grass ultra + setup profil settings with nvidia inspector greatly increases the perfs.

You keep mentioning this, what do you mean by:
'helifax fix for grass ultra'
Did I miss a fix he posted somewhere? or do you mean a unique combo of the 350.12 driver set and some other driver where the grass works?
Please break this down for me as I would like to try this.

same problem on dragon age inq. Some elements are broken on left eye. for gta 5 grass is break on left eye. If you add cmode line in nvidia profile with 3d profil manager that fixes grass on left eye. Just disable cmode when you launch the game.

Epic screenshot there too xXBeeshopXx! This is the reason I simply cannot even consider playing a game like this in 2D. In 2D, that shot is nice, in 3D, it's Wow!

So enabling CM by adding one of the flags Helifax mentions fixes the grasses? No way!
Which flag did you use?

SOLVED: I tweaked the MP3 profile. The GTA5 profile is the one to use.
Helifax's trick fixes the missing text too! I suffer flickering in one eye in the menu screens but I can live with that! :)
Woah!!!
It works but boy does it affect performance! 15 FPS! I would usually be getting 40 with the same settings (Grasses: Very High)
I used Helifax's commonly used flag.
What have I done wrong?
edit
It only slows down near grasses
