Buy a 3D vision notebook
Hi, I would like to buy a 3D vision notebook, not for gaming but for developing stereo based application. First I want to buy a laptop with a Quadro card, but I did not find this kind of laptop. Some laptop has a Quadro card, but the monitor does not satisfy the requirement (not 120HZ). I do not want to use an external monitor. If anyone know a laptop with a Quadro card and does not need an external monitor, please let me know:-) So I decide to buy a 3D vision laptop with a GeForce card. I am not familiar with which manufacturer and model should I choose, so can anybody recommend some good laptop you are familiar with? The Gefore card should be 680M and above, so I can use the quad buffered stereo. Thanks a lot!

Hi, Sorry to tell you this but your only option for any sort of portable 3D experience is to buy a used laptop on ebay. Helifax and a handful of other forum regulars have some 3D laptops, mostly Alienware, but I also wanted a 3D laptop last year and could not find one anywhere. One Alienware model was still showing a 3D option, but only on the US website, not Europe or UK, around August last year. Then it all went dark. This year I checked again. Alienware, Origin, Asus, MSI - all these brands had 3D vestions at some point in the last 3-4 years (you can still see the cached webpages in Google) but nothing is available now! NOTHING! NOBODY CARES ANYMORE! Sorry, but I'm really pissed. All laptop manufacturers list new Nvidia cards in their laptops (some setups even have SLI 980Ms!), which for the first time since 3D Vision was invented would probably have been able to drive 1080p perfectly in 3D. But none of them offer a 3D screen as an option, no matter how much you would want to pay them. That's it.

Yeah I've just checked the Alienware website (UK) and there are 2 types of display they offer... standard and touchscreen..lolz... I am really sad to see this...but the year is still young... Maybe they will add 3d Screens in later models? You can always contact Dell and tell them you want a 3D Screen in a Laptop. If people get heard probably they will add it back as an option?:)

Thanks guys. From your reply, I am a little bit of confused. 1. It looks there are many 3D vision ready laptops listed in http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-notebooks.html Why you think the choice is quite limited? 2. If as what you said, the 3D vision laptop is quite few, what's the reason causing this? I just read some news that Microsoft and Apple are focusing on stereo hardware. I think stereo based applications will increase quickly in future, but have no idea why current support in laptop is quite limited as what you said.
Thanks guys.

Most of those are out of stock, are non-upgradeable, overheat (toshiba), or are just too underpowered to play 3Dvision at decent speeds without sacrificing image quality. If you already have a laptop with a 120hz screen, you can just get the 3DVision Glasses Kit with emitter. Which is less than $100 on ebay. A decent laptop that can handle 3DVision well is gonna cost you 2 1/2K+

Hi ! Are all 120 hz notebooks compatible with 3D vision ? Or does the display need to be certified ? Thank you.

Pretty sure it has to be certified 3d vision ready. Most 3d vision ready Laptops come with the IR emitter built directly into the laptop. Not just any 120hz/144hz screen will support 3d vision. If that was the case all 120hz/144hz would be 3d vision ready. AFAIK laptop manufacturers stopped making 3d vision capable laptops when the 980m came out (because apparently 980m does not support 3d vision). Any laptop with 880m, 780m etc is probably your best bet at finding a 3d vision capable laptop.

The problem is that the laptop developers don't want to make 3D laptops anymore because there is not enough demand. If the 980M has an output that is not ruined by Optimus, then you could run an external 3D display off it.
