Xcom - Enemy Unknown - Cut off sound any ideas?
  1 / 2
I know this isn't a direct 3D questions, but considering many of you guys have played this in 3D you may be able to help. I am having problems with cut off speech and dialogue from soldiers (and even in the video at the start). Does anyone have any ideas? I have checked file integrity (steam) deleted all the save information to start again, and changed my sound from 5.1 to stereo, no luck. Any ideas would be mucho appreciated. I have thrown this question to the 2K forums too, although it seems like no one has had this problem on PC (although a PS3 user has similar problem).

There are ways to make codec improvements, maybe it will kick it in gear. Search xcom audio codec. I had to do it for borderlands 2 because of low audio.

Cheers eqzitara. Unfortunately I have trawled google and not found anything related to xcom audio codecs, or something that may solve this problem. Bloody annoying, it's like the game is on runaway speed and is trying to play the next sounds way before they are due. Only with dialogue though, and not with every sentence. weird. Think I may have to give up on it, as there doesn't seem to be one other person with this problem I can find. I have done everything I can think of. Will maybe just have to wait till a new PC build in a year hopefully magically fixes it... Shame though, was looking forward to Ironman mode and some serious hair pulling!

Well My computer just crashed, with a message I have never seen before: Clock_Watchdog_Timeout Normally, this is caused by the cores not talking to each other correctly (apparently). According to reading, this is normally a driver issue. Due to the fact that my machine seems to have become unstable during the last week (I thought it my crashes were due to Bioshock Infinite being v.1.00 but a crash during L4D2 today suggests otherwise) I reset my clocks back to 2.8ghz. This has removed the problem. Seems like my proc has degraded :-(. What a waste for my watercooler now, lol. Will not be upgrading for a year so will have to run it sensibly now. Thankyou for your suggestions though eqzitara, I will keep them in mind for future problems should they occur.

Well check some research about overclocking. Its not always heat related. Read about mobo and ram and may be able to OC again. There is a test thats recommended to check stability of games when Overclocking something 64.

I could always crank of the cpu voltage a little, but if it was stable a year ago and not now probably means degradation (afaik). Upping vcore will only speed up that degradation, and with the house needing quite a lot of work doing to it a new computer is out of the window till next year so must be careful with what I have. Great article on cpu degradation can be found here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2468/6 If anyone's interested with my settings: Core Speed 3.57 Bus Speed 170 QPI Link 3060 Dram Frequency 680 FSB:Dram 2.8 CAS# latency 9 RAS# to CAS# Delay 9 Cycle Time (tRAS) 9 Row Refresh tRFC 24 uclk Frequency 3400 CPU voltage 1.2 QPI Voltage 1.3 IOH Voltage 1.1 Dram bus Boltage 1.64

I think so. The proc's 3 years old, over-clocked for 1. At least all seems stable now. The temps on it were always high, even on stock clocks and good paste. I think it was a dodgy chip to begin with. Xcom looks great in 3D. Ironman is harsher than i thought though. Quite different to original xcom, one wrong click and i launched a rocket into all my men killing the lot. Re-start tomorrow ;-) Thanks for your help.

See what happens when you play games in 2D!? It's all Bioshock: Infinite's fault, well your fault for stooping to such levels to play it. Lol. I was wondering where you went, thought you went mad from all that playing in 2D. :D

lol, not quite mad, but close to it. BI was great, a bloody great ride even without 3D, easily surpassing all my expectations. Makes me, once again, realise how we are only at the very beginning of film/game story telling. I'm sure at some point in the future non interactive 2D movies will be a thing of the past, and that games and movies will collide into an undistinguishable mash. The results will be as close to living the actual story as physically possible. Imagine actually being Frodo walking to Mordor. Games/movies for friends, couples etc to play along together... yay. What our children will be doing with their free time. But yes, 2D broke my PC ;-) Warning's out there you 3Ders who think about throwing away a dimension for kicks. Don't. Xcom is looking great in 3D, but not liking the 4 camera angles. Feels very restrictive. Also miss all the customisation of the original, strategy and costs (grenades are free :-o). Still, great game and probably is a lot more appealing to the average punter then the original.

You can revert it to old mode and play it like diablo 3 in 3d. Use 2D hud and just ramp the heck out of convergence. Just turn off alternate views in options.
Feels very restrictive.
They stood there ground as much as they could imo. Look at rpg market nowadays. Dragon age origins was like closest thing to old school rpg with perhaps exception of legend of grimrock[indie]. Even that has been simplified, like auto healing after battles. Then past that theres been nothing for 10 years.

Will try turning off alt views tomorrow. Don't you find that ramping up convergence makes it looks great for battles but then breaks the pop out when close up? The 3D effect I have is medium depth medium convergence, its quite 'safe' but looks pretty good, big thanks to helix and your site for that fix. Don't get me wrong about xcom, I am thoroughly enjoying it, with some things clearly improved (graphics, combat). I'm still getting my teeth stuck into it, and I appreciate that the original was far too geeky for mass sale appeal. I racked up a lot of hours on the original, and loved the micromanaging (which in most games i usually hate). Although I did used to hate having to re-arm my soldiers in the original every battle.... That was an arse. As for simplification, i actually thought origins was the perfect blend of geeky and streamlined, just could have had a little snappier writing. Never played the second as that really was dumbed down. Anyway, after all this time thinking your pic was from a hitman game, i finally realised yesterday on booting up xcom for the first time that you are the 'agency'. A fan then? Or just a cool 'incognito' picture?

Im a bit confused but I am pretty sure it remains on one camera view with no/little zooming. Overhead with everything off. I kind of raise it till hud is just above heads as if air unit so if it zooms a bit I dont remember it going all over but I also played at high depth. I use a controller as well so no 2d mouse. Could be wrong but thats what I think I ended up doing. Im a fan but its mainly because of all of the anonymous posts on helixmod site. I thought it was kind of funny when you compare to them.
