Oculus ( Rift ) Crystal Cove Protoype - First Impressions
  1 / 3
The word on the Oculus Crystal Cove prototype from CES is: it works very well. - The motion sickness seems to have been fixed because of their new "low persistence" technology. - Motion tracking works a charm. - Screen door effect mitigated with new higher resolution OLED display. - Panel manufacturers now working with them directly to produce custom parts instead of off-the-shelf phone/tablet panels. Your move, Nvidia. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMPFXYGoNHI

Yeah, i've played a minecraft type game on my OLED smartphone and i could tell the motion was pretty good as it was. They are doing something on top of that i guess. Looking good, but i hope they increase the FOV very soon.

46" Samsung ES7500 3DTV (checkerboard, high FOV as desktop monitor, highly recommend!) - Metro 2033 3D PNG screens - Metro LL filter realism mod - Flugan's Deus Ex:HR Depth changers - Nvidia tech support online form - Nvidia support: 1-800-797-6530

Dumping the gyroscopes for head tracking is a good idea, but I bet trackir is a bit pissed they stole their solution.

This is one of those new techs that I won't be on the bleeding edge of the bandwagon to adopt, but once they perfect the consumer version I will definitely be interested. What little I could see of the space dogfighting game on that video looked awesome. That is right up my alley.

Yeah. Everything about this reveal has me excited. High hz Oled, driven in a low persistence mode, and the new motion tracking. This thing is going to be sweet as heck. If they could somehow get a custom panel at 1440p, this thing would be gaming nirvana even in consumer version 1. Hoping we get the consumer prototype unveiling at E3 (another 6 months to add even more goodies) and launch details for a Q3/4 release. With Valve out of the picture short term, I don't think anyone should be looking for Nvidia or Sony. Besides, with Carmack working in tandem with Abrash (at Valve), that's brain power that's unequaled. Not only are they depressingly smart, but they also understand the most important thing: latency, latency, and latency. And they're obsessed with focusing on it. P.S. Here's Sony's solution: http://venturebeat.com/2014/01/06/sony-vr/ LOL No wonder it's not getting any attention. Looks like an HMZ with Playstation Eye tracking tacked on. They even use the same rhethoric they use with the HMZ (750 foot screen... from half a mile away). 45 degree FOV is just terrible. My HMZ looked exactly like what you'd expect from a 45 degree viewer. Like I was looking at a 24 inch monitor two feet away. And let's hope they finally got serious about latency with it. Because the HMZ-T1 had a bunch of input lag. Carmack even had contacts at Sony and offered to rewrite the firmware for them (for free)... but they never took him up on it. I can only imagine how terrible it's going to be unless they've somehow found religion and embraced gutting anything that contributes to latency.

lol "Your move, Nvidia." I couldn't agree more. They gave us 3D Vision, it would be incredible to see what they could come up with in the VR department. Who knows, maybe they will Branch out in "other ways" I am so exited about the Oculus Rift, they continue making great improvements on it. Thanks op for posting the video :)

There are so many great people who have joined Oculus rift now, that I think that even doubters have to admit that it has a pretty good chance of being THE system that leads us to true next gen gaming. The fact that Oculus has also made it clear that they are interested in growing their software and game development team from advising and ideas to actual original game creation is also rather exciting and potentially crucial for its success. So I, maybe foolishly so, will likely be buying one on day one consumer release (along side a shiny new PC ) and these accessories: http://www.priovr.com/ http://www.virtuix.com/ I know many would not be interested, but I really want to run around and get a work out when I game. I think with these three tools, and one decent game, it would be worth the price for me at least. Here's to 2014; a fantastic year for gaming and PC.

so what is the new resolution on it ?

1080 last I heard (split between two eyes). But the consumer one could be getting a higher res screen. They have made it clear that they are no longer using phone panel hand me downs. They are in discussion with the manufacture (Samsung from what i've read), so the final specs could be a higher res device that may or may not be seen in mobile phones. Considering 2k 6" inch displays (2560x1440) are being demoed. I think we may see something along that line for the consumer release (even if that's the "pro" edition).

Maybe Samsung will buy Occulus and compete with Sony. They used to love competing with sony. Then again they used to be the underdog with emphasis on "used to be".

The Verge just demoed the latest version of the Virtuix Omni and it's also coming along nicely! (Note that in the video they are using the Oculus dev kit) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H75BT43uT0 Wasn't there someone else doing something similar but with an omnidirectional passive treadmill? The dream of the '90s is finally alive! :)

The dream would probably be a couple of smaller bendable OLEDs for each eye. That's getting greedy, and more likely a second or third gen wishlist, but the possibility is pretty cool. P.S. Here's more impressions of the Sony "VR" unit: http://www.tested.com/tech/tvs/459687-ces-2014-impressions-sonys-head-tracking-hmd-prototype/ Basically an HMZ-T3 with a tracker tacked on. That thing's an absolute gimmick for VR. Expensive and bad (for VR).

Mid december they announced they had $75M in venture capital investments, that is some serious bank for research and development.

So much for facing any direction you want. I really hope they can find a better solution that suits the hardcore VR crowd as well as the mainstream, who I'm guessing Oculus believes will be sitting in front of their monitor and camera (which to me makes no sense, as there would still only be one proper way for your head to be facing, largely defeating the point of being able to look around.) I want to be able to: - Look one direction - Fire in another - Run in another L4D2 with friends would never be so fun, scary, immersive and healthy!
