460 or 470 GTX enough for 3D Vision with newer games?
1 / 3
I am thinking about getting the ASUS VG236H monitor with 3D vision glasses. I also need to upgrade my video card. I was thinking of a OCed 460 or stock 470. Will that be enough to run newer games like Mafia II decently? If not, can I play in resolutions lower than native? It's hard to stomach needing a 480 or SLI in addition to all the other costs.
What setting sacrifices will I need to make using these cards?

The best way to think about 3D Vision is this - You basicly have to double the performance numbers needed from the GPU in 2D. For every one 2D frame in 3D you need two. Make sense? So, yes a GTX460 1gig card could do it, but SLI is definitely recommended to get the best experience performance wise. As for what settings you would need to lower with a single card, I'll leave that up to the hard core 3D guys as I only know the concept and have played with it once or twice. They'll hook ya up.

Don't have mafia, but going from 260 to 470 made those newer 3D ready titles (metro, bad company, dead rising) smooth on highest settings, 1080p. 260 was doing a fine job, but 470 gave a nice bump for the new stuff.

it's not like you wouldn't notice the 3d, but just like with 2d, to me, 1fps per hertz would be desireable, or 120fps, @ 1080p, along with good pq settings and AA. I looked at some benchmarks recently and it seems as though highend sli wouldn't be a bad idea, to this end, imo. (Apologies for the sacrilegious benchs.)
