so basically he's capturing the image, converting the image to sbs and streaming real time to the rift?

Yes, he is converting 3d vision framepacking and he is converting to HSBS + distortion in real time and streaming. Headtracking is probably off the table due to latency but its still pretty amazing and Rift definetly needs renderer support through whatever means.

I want it to come out, but I also love that they're working to get the kinks out. Latest interview says they've eliminated all latency from any human POV. There's plenty of things they can still work on. Palmer also said there's a huge difference between a Rift running at 60hz and 90hz (big surprise). So I'd love for them to work on some controller hardware that could get their chosen screen at above 60hz. Plus, I'd also love for that 5.9inch 2540X1440 LG screen to be included.
I know people say that's too hard to drive, but it would have the same pixel per resolution (actually slightly worse if it had an FOV above 90 degrees) as the Sony HMZ-T1. Which for anyone who's used one, knows it still has blocky pixels at that PPR and suffers from some degradation compared to a nice monitor.
I'm of the opinion the best games aren't going to be next-gen console ports anyways. So if those games were to struggle with those specs, it's not really the biggest deal anyways. It needs as much resolution and hz as they can possibly find.

TBH, Im more excited for whatever sony announces. I know its a long shot but its more likely to be two separate displays and in a more "supported" format. TBH I really dont like the Rifts design/screen usage. It really limits it as alternative display to more of an accesory.
Though, I am curious if someone is going to "really" do open-source hmd.

Like so but with custom lcd panels would be interesting. Future proof since upgrading panels. [Though cabling/hardware will be an issue unless someone streamlines]

Have you ever worn the Sony HMZ? It's horribly uncomfortable. It also had a bunch of latency that I knew was there, and was ridiculed elsewhere for claiming such, but was then verified by Carmack last year as being 65ms worth of input lag. Sony sometimes ignores the most important elements.
I also have zero faith in Sony's version because I don't know that they really prioritize things properly (based on the HMZ experiment), and more importantly, there's no way to cheat the resolution per pixel problem. You need resolution. Period. You also need 60fps as an absolute unbreakable minimum (unless you want people getting sick). I don't see how the PS4 can possibly drive that. So I expect 720P (albeit dual screen). Which is going to look bad at 100 degrees FOV. And this is what it's going to be hardware locked into for the next 8 years.

Can follow research/news here. Surprisingly seems to work well.
