1. Pay $40 for 3DTV Play.
2. Submit your TV for 3DTV Play certification (if it doesn't work already).
3. Enjoy 3D games.
Stereoscopic 3D support isn't free for Nvidia, they're a business and they have a right to try to make money off of this. Or perhaps, a right to cut their losses, depending on how financially successful this stuff actually is. Frankly, I think a one time payment of $40 is extremely reasonable.

Your conclusion is no surprise given its how you got in this predicament to begin with, absolutely no research done beforehand.
The answer is yes if:
1) You buy a 3D Vision Ready certified display.
2) You buy a 3DTV Play certified HDTV.
If you don't fit in either of these two categories, there's a good chance you're SOL like 99% of the rest of the 3D industry if you buy from one vendor and expect support and compatibility with another.

I don't believe you about edid. The main purpose nvidia has for it today is indeed to choose what displays to support.
Information of the display working modes is contained within the edid (which is the purpose of the edid to make displays plug'n'play). Why would nvidia want the edid when the graphiccard easily reads what resolutions and frequencies the display supports?
This is experiemented with years ago with the old legacy stereodrivers. 91.31 stereo supports every mode on every display while using 162.50 requires pinmodding (disbable read of edid) and utter **** to enable other stereomodes than anaglyph.
So believe me: Nvidia are evil!

Maybe its easier to ask this question, what 3D HDTVs has Nvidia selectively decided NOT to support if they are using EDID to filter and support displays? The only display I can think that remotely fits this category is the Sony Playstation 3D Display and the reason given was because Nvidia does not consider it to be a 3DTV. Beyond that, its obvious Nvidia would rather explicitly state which displays it supports by at least verifying the input, timings and outputs support 3DTV Play rather than making a blanket-statement about support for all 3DTVs and then running into compatibility issues.
Its pretty clear to me they have a defined support model in an industry and technology that clearly lacks that same level of support and dedication. But as an iZ3D user I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about. Now which is the lesser of the evils?

"Nvidia has stated on these forums they do not get a penny from HDTV manufacturers to support 3D Displays. They will support most any 3D HDTV on the market if you send them the EDID info of your display."
So just to see were i would end up with 3d hdtv i submitted my edid info and got this response.
Thank you for your submission. I am sorry but NVIDIA 3DTV Play can only support displays that are 32" or larger.
my own set is 27", so its a non starter again on the support front. its really vision support i need for my passive 27" 3d monitor.
Not singling you out Chiz, had a look at some of stuff you mentioned and got supported

The thing I have a problem with is their lack of official support for "all" 3D Displays. Displays that are perfectly capable of working such as certain Samsung monitors like the S23A700D, S27A950D, etc are shunned by Nvidia.
