Big shock to me, I did not expect to really need more than 3G for the next couple of years. To be fair this is the first game that really has needed it.
But, one of my 3 year old 580's just got smoked, so of course that's time for upgrade. I was looking closely at GTX 780, but with 'only' 3G of RAM, it seems somehow less desirable than GTX 770 SLI 4G, for a longer view, kinda/sorta the same money. SLI 770 will of course beat a single 780, but I was thinking of waiting on SLI for a bit.
The 2G cards are a lot less interesting now, and to save some bucks I was planning to SLI 2G 770s, $700 instead of $800 for the 4G cards.
The other dilemma is that the card is under warranty, which is nice, but the replacement is a 2G 760, which is really not interesting at all. It's a 'better' card than the 580, but breaks my SLI and is a dead end as far as I'm concerned. But 4G 760 SLI at $600 is not terrible, just seems like a wasted opportunity because I upgrade so seldom. Choices, choices.

The SLI 4G 770's are a good option I think. I have 2x 2G 770s and can run Watch Dogs in Ultra with a few things turned down, but the 4G cards won't require even that. If you are not going to upgrade for a couple of years, 4G cards seem preferable since the difference in performance between 780 and 770 is not that big (10-15% or something). I think SLI 780s are quite a bit more expensive as well.

800 series is bound to be soon at this point. Give it 2 months from release then buy used 770's/780's since people will be trying to dump them. Thats me though, I bought my 600's / 400's new SLI and I always regret it.

I think the high-end Maxwell cards are still a while off, as TMSC or whatever they're called aren't ready yet with the 20nm process.
Officially, Maxwell is already out. There are 8xx series laptop cards, and the 750ti is a Maxwell card. But these aren't the real deal yet, and Nvidia has said that they're going to save the top-end cards till the end of their release schedule. The impression I'm getting is that the serious next-gen NVidia gaming cards will come in Q1 next year, if that.

Hey guys!
I have the same dilemma, what card should I get hmmm.
Right now I on the old gtx 570 and was holding on for the Maxwell cards, but as it seems it will take like forever, next year right ?
I was thinking going GTX 780 but now I see how VRAM hungry the games (Watch Dogs) I cant get any less then say 4gb card as bo3b says.
So it seems like going the gtx 770 4gb are the best bet for now and I am thinking about buying the lovely Asus ROG 27 g-sync 1440P and then you really need even more vram then on 1080P that I game on now.
Well what should I do, it driving me crazy to game on the old gtx570 right now so I must do something but what ....

Don't get a 1440p monitor unless you're prepared to spend a lot on graphics cards on a regular basis, or deal with running everything on medium-low detail settings.

Thats probably very true mate so if I will get that Asus monitor I will go SLI aswell, or it will be gaming at medium as you say and who want that :/
And GTX770 is pretty cheap and by any chance one 770 4GB will hold me over untill Maxwell comes out :)

how much VRAM those have?
I have 2 GTX 690s and can't run much maxed out. But those are only 2 GB per GPU.

for dual gpu cards or SLI setups, only the vram of one card is used, and so only 2G vram of your 690 is used while gaming.
btw, always go by the total resolution check, not just by y res; the difference between 1440p and 1080p is quite a bit; it's 2560x1440 VS 1920x1080.
of course though, not as dire as surround 5760+ x 1080 VS standard 1920x1080.
670 4G SLI can handle most past and current games in 3D Surround with medium to high settings. for most games, AA is not needed at such high of resolutions.
so 770 4G SLI should be adequate for 2560x1440 3D gaming.

[EDIT Ha! I was ninja'd!]
Are you sure SLI works this way?
I was under the impression (again, according to totalbiscuit) just because you SLI 2 x 2GB cards, does mean you get 4GB VRAM. I think you just get 2GB. You do see the benefit with 3D though (two scenes) which is why the 3D cost isn't as great as a single card.

Yeah trust me I am aware that even when i am in Quad SLI i effectively only have a 2GB pf VRAM that was why I said it was only 2GB per GPU anyway. Since each GPU may handle one frame at a time if any at all.
I normally play at 6056x1080 with my cards, but most times I can't max out even the simple stuff at 1920x1080

Mine are the 2gb model.
SLI doesn't add up the total ram on your cards. Each GPU has access to only it's own memory, so while both cards may use their own stash of memory, it won't be the same as having twice the memory.

Maybe a single Maxwell card might eventually do the trick, but I guess you don't want to wait that long.
