Windows 8.1 or 10 - exclusively for 3D Vision gaming - need help
  1 / 2
Hi all. I'm upgrading my 3D Vision gaming system in June when the new Intel X299 chipset and socket 2066 is launching. I need help deciding which version of Windows is best for 3D Vision. I've read quite a few complaints in the forum about Windows 10 not working well with 3D Vision. I have Windows 8.1 and so far so good. I wanted to get some feedback early on so I can decide in June which OS to get. Thanks for the help :)

As bad as Windows 10 is and as much of detractor of the operating System that I am. Windows 8.1 is far far worse... seriously. In fact for 3d I remmeber a time many people where saying to roll back to 8.0 if you had no other option. If anything try and get a copy of 7 pro for the best 3d experience.

Microsoft will not allow updates for new CPUs on anything other than 10. So you'll probably want to dual boot. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/04/new-processors-are-now-blocked-from-receiving-updates-on-old-windows/ People have recently been being greeted with the following NAG Screen. https://betanews.com/2017/04/18/how-to-bypass-microsofts-next-gen-processor-update-block-on-windows-7-and-8-1/
Thanks all for the info and help. Oh yah I totally forgot that the new hardware is not gonna have Windows update. Last year it created a buzz but then we kinda forgot it. Thanks D-Man11 for sharing; the bypass method is very useful. I wonder how long it will work until Micro$oft will block it in a future update. As much as I hate Windows 10 and especially Micro$uckers, I must admit we can't avoid the inevitable. As new hardware comes and we eventually need to upgrade, and there's no guarantee the bypass will continue to be an option, and support will eventually drop for earlier Windows versions...we'll be forced to adopt Windows 10 with all it's flaws for 3D to keep the hobby alive. I've been reading the 3D Vision forum about Windows 10 issues and resisted the free upgrade. After going through so many updates and patches of Windows 10 I'd like to ask current Windows 10 users here:
[.]What kind of 3D issues are you currently experiencing with the latest updates How do Helixmod fixes work with Windows 10 Are there any games that absolutely don't work in 3D in Windows 10 And if you found a way to make games work, do they work normally like on Windows 8 [/.]
My apologies I think there's a separate thread dedicated to Windows 10 problems, but I think it's relevant to this thread as well. Thanks all again for helping me on this.

Honestly 3dvision works pretty good in 10, some problems I used to have in 7 may also actually have been fixed in the 10 drivers. Dragon age inquisition for example seems to work for the most part fine in 10, but requires some sort of voodoo ritual for me to get to work in 7. Only real issue I have is some titles actually refuse to start in 3dvision at all in 10, but work fine in 7, and example of this is Torchlight 2, regardless of the game having a exclusive fullscreen mode. In this case you can try a workaround of setting your desktop to a different resolution than the game and most of the time the emitter will then turn on when the resolution changes.

I heard W10 does not support exclusive Full Screen mode like previously. Does that have any impact? I know under W7 I play all my games in 3D in Full Screen so I'm a bit worried about that.

3D Vision must live! NVIDIA, don't let us down!

I don't know why people keep promoting Win 7. Both windows 8.1 and Win 10 provide better performance in all the games I play. It is true that there might be occasional issues, but TBH I didn't encounter any besides a problem in Black ops 1 in Windows 10.

For my setup (including joker18's great 4K EDID mod), Lords of the Fallen and XCOM 2 did not work correctly under Windows 10, but work great under Windows 8.1. All other games I have work great under Windows 10, however.

Win 10 "no safe mode"... i think that pretty much says it all. Blu-ray burning is all fucked up in 10 because my old mobo. Some usefull old apps don't work. I don't know Win 10 just feels like the greatest blow job but in middle of the action you look under the hood and see jingle bells.

Of course there is Safe mode in win 10. What do you mean? How old can those apps be if they don't work?

I've done extensive performance profiling, and I don't see any difference between 7 and 10. Not slower, not faster. 3D Vision performance is my only concern, I don't give a damn about 2D, and I don't give a damn about boot speed.
