I've been using a Asus VG278H for a while and recently got a new pc, I was using the monitor connected via hdmi before, aware that you don't get the full 3D functionality doing so. Now with the new pc I want to play more in 3D so want it at its best with this monitor and as I understand it, needs to be connected via dual-link DVI instead of hdmi.
I connected monitor and pc with the dvi cable and I just can't seem to get it to work properly. The pc doesn't detect the monitor for a start, it just shows something like 'Generic pnp monitor' etc. So there's only one resolution setting which isn't what it's suppose to be, this is the same in both the desktop setting and nvidia control panel.
I've looked for drivers for the monitor but there seems to only be the multiframe software available.
So to break it down
Works fine with HDMI, pc detects monitor, works in 3D but is limited to 24hz.
Dual-link DVI works, but does not detect montor, only poor resolution with no other options.
I'm not technically sound so things like this baffle me, is there a simple solution i'm missing....barring buying a new monitor.
Is my DVI cable outdated maybe, I found it in a cupbard, must be about 2-3 years old?

Does your monitor have a mode that can select between input mode ? Ex: HDMI/DVI/AUTO ?
It could be that the cable is not working properly... Are you sure is a dual link DVI cable ?
The easiest way to test this would be with a different cable.

Yeah, to make sure I checked the ends of the cable with diagrams etc of the DVI cable required and it matched fine, there is a mode on the monitor to switch over to dvi/hdmi/vga which I did before changing over.

Do you have the 3D Vision portions of the driver installed?
Make sure that it's plugged into a Dual Link output, it should be stamped in the metal next to the output.
Confirm that the monitor is properly connected and recognized by looking in the Nvidia Control Panel, in the resolution tab it will say either the model number or the manufacturer's name. For the Asus, it will say "Ancor Communications". If it's not recognized you can try "hot plugging" the display, this should trigger windows to recognize it. I'm not sure if W8.1 supports hotplugging though since it uses a new WDDM (version 1.3) and I think somewhere I read it doesn't.
Monitors that have an internal emitter can sometimes have issues initializing, this can usually be solved by unplugging the monitor for a little while from it's power source to initiate a reset. To check, you need to look "system setup" portion of the "Display's built in menu" to make sure there are not red letters indicating emitter problems. See this link...

It is infra red and can not be seen by the naked eye. Of course it will not come on until the need arises, such as running the setup wizard.
