I finally convinced my wife that an 27" monitor is essential for my future gaming life (that was a tough nut to crack :)
So I would very much like to hear you guys opinions on this matter !
The new Asus PG278QR or Dell S2716DG or...???
I know much has allready been written about this topic, but I think it's difficult to get a complete overwiev !
Personally, I despise Dell as a company.
But FFS, the Asus 1440P monitors are overpriced.
Almost $700.00 for what?
The Dell can usually be found for under $500, it's $479.00 right now. I was able to get it $100 cheaper than that with some coupons and a gift card they offered.

I do like Asus, but the majority of the monitor manufacturers are bending people over these days, IMO.
When the ROG Swift launched, I could understand the premium price, because G-Sync and 1440P were a new thing, but that was quite awhile ago.
I think the Dell is less compatible about different 3D modes on different inputs? Read that here.
Was also trying to read on this recently as I think from 24" 1080p going to 27" 1440p is the next logical step. But now I have doubts if a 1060 can handle 3D in 1440p. I currently play the same few old games in 1080p with a 660 Ti without issue and I know 1440p is requiring a lot more power but a 1060 is almost twice powerful as a 660 Ti so I thougt it should works for current games I play but maybe not all the latest ones. Certainly not for Witcher 3 as discussed here where a GTX 1080 is not enough.
Oh well, fact is I was never able to afford a x80 series cards, the sweet spot was always the x60 series but maybe the day I'll be ready to buy I'll have a second look at a 1070 if wallet permit. Or can I start a gofundme for that? hehehe
Glad you have your wife on your side. :)

I have the Dell, and what I can say is that it is a good monitor and in general I am happy with it, but of course it has some disadvantages (I don't know compared to Asus PG278QR):
- Too much bright, I have to lower down the brightness around 10% to have a decent black. It is essential to download a icc profile.
- Some crosstalk/ghosting when playing with Nvidia 3D Vision glasses.
- TN panel (even though it is a good one).
- Some minor details: no led indicator of what mode your are using (g-sync, ulmb or normal). No posibility to memorize presets to have different seupts easily. No speakers (I would have loved some basic speakers with decent quality). OSD navigation not good enough (but no need to use too much because you don't have many options).

Just bought the PG278QR. Amazing monitor in 3D Vision. Ghosting is practically non existant on this one.
A bit hard to drive with my 980 ti though.
Another good option would be the PG258Q, which is not so taxing on the graphics card. The latest panels seem to be dealing with the ghosting problem quite good.

GTX 1080ti - Rampage III Extreme - XEON i7 920 @ 4.0 GHz - 24 GB Ram - Windows 7 64 - ASUS PG278QR
Damn kinda regretting getting 3 of the previous model now being scared I was soon to run out of options.
But I think i am going to move to that new 4k screen they announced, as You should be able to play in 1080p without the scaling problems anyway.

Hi,
I have the Asus PG278QR and i can tell u that is a GREAT monitor, i love all abut this one...3D/2D works flawless.
I have single 1070 AsusROG OC + this monitor and all the games i've tried working smooth with max details
In my opinion is the best choice for 2K+3D...my only problem is Mass Effect 3 but has nothing to do with the monitor
some infos here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asus_rog_swift_pg278q.htm

Would be nice they review it though and that they focus on comparing both.

That PG278QR looks great but I'm sick of ASUS and thier inflated prices
Look at the price of the ROG Swift years later....they aren't even trying to give us a good deal.

@D-Man11: Here in Denmark the prices on the Dell (€570) is more or less the same as the Asus (€600) :/
@BadONE: I'm very pleased to hear that the ghosting is minimal, this is one of my major concerns..
I also own a 980 TI and I know this must be the next replacement, but I hope that many of the not so taxing games will run just fine.
I guess might have to run some games in 1080P ATM, what about scaling issues ??
@Clammy: I have bought so much Asus hardware over the years, and allmost never got dissapointed..
It aint cheap but but for most parts it's quality IMO.

Actually there's a BenQ 27" Zowie XL2730 it's without G-sync thus the pricetag at €615, haven't heard anything about it though...
Edit: Sorry if I've misleaded anyone about prices in the above post, it was a typo..
Real prices:
Asus €700
Dell €670
BenQ €615
Also the new HDR monitors "might" be an option, if they work with 3D Vision, they'd be more future proof.
The dense PPI on these smaller displays would make for a great image, although not so easy on performance.
So, you might wait until people start giving them reviews and see if they are any good.

The problem is that they are going to be IPS or VA, and there isn't any monitor with those types of panels with 3D Vision (yet).
We may have to wait until OLED+4K+HDR+3D, because I think it's unlikely that they'll keep making TN monitors.
About current 1440p monitors, I have the Dell S2716DG. The biggest problems are the vertical scanlines pattern caused by pixel inversion (which affects the whole screen in 3D) and more ghosting than my old BenQ XL2411Z. I got used to those flaws, but having a monitor without them would be awesome.
Still, I paid 495.71€ for it, and it would seem unwise for me to buy the Asus PG278QR for 700€.

I hope that's not the case with the Asus PG278QR, I could be settle with 1440P for now, 4K is too demanding for the time being IMO
