I normally keep it off too but there's one reason I turn it on sometimes...
Sometimes I want to try a game in 3d but it freezes my system when I use the 3d toggle (on or off). Then I set it to auto-on and some games will work that way in 3d even though I can't use the toggle. Then if I want a part, like a cutscene, to be in 2d, I just reduce separation to 0 instead of using the toggle. That's the work-around.

Look for an option: "enable 3d by hotkey" or similar in the nvidiastereodrivers. I'm not sure about 3d-vision but it would be strange if they've altered it.
