Star Wars: Old Republic not quite 3D ready
  1 / 2
Hey all! Woohoo! I got Early Access! I'm in!!! See you all next year! /w00twave.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':w00twave:' />

Anyway, graphics all ramped up to max and my PC is handling them fine. 3D just about works, but clearly the game wasn't designed for it. Nameplates and suchlike are all 2D while everything else is 3D. I have to set convergence so my character appears deeper into the screen so it doesn't clash with the control bar also.

Other than that, I've just hit level 2 after a handful of missions - playing Sith Bounty Hunter. Graphics are good for an MMORPG, but not spectacular. It's faithful to canon so far, and I'm on a rescue mission for a Hutt. It was awesome getting a holoprojection SOS from an R2 unit, but instead of a beautiful princess, I got a giant fat slimy slug! /bloated.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':X' />

I haven't had a chance to try out the chat interfaces, but the combat one is relatively straightforward.

Anyway, this is the kind of game that could so easily be classed '3D ready'. Some of the effects work really well, such as explosions and laser fire. Once I'd fiddled with the F5 and F6 a bit, with depth set at about 35%, it looked pretty good. I just need to find a way to make the nameplates transparent or not pop up or something.

Anyone else played it? What do you think?

You can turn nameplates off (except when you specifically click on a person / npc / slug like creature). It's under one of the option menus.

And yes, the game works really well in 3D, there's no reason not to try it. Some lighting effects don't look quite right, but they're used *very* sparingly, so it's hardly a major problem.

I'm playing at 100% depth and about mid-way convergance.

Also, for once in an RPG, all the water I've seen looks fine even on high graphics settings. :)

Any word on an official profile, NVIDIA? *nudge*

I thought the TOR in 3D Vision was very good, main issues as mentioned already are 2D nameplates and mouse cursor. Everything else is manageable. I didn't get any artifacting or lighting issues with everything set to max in the normal game mode, but I did get some issues in Space Combat with planets being at the wrong depth or having a weird halo. That's definitely something to check out though, the space combat in 3D is REALLY sweet looking even if its a pretty basic Star Fox-like rail shooter.

Biggest thing about 3D however is it goes a long way in masking TOR's sub-par graphics and textures. Given the launch binaries are the same as the last Beta, I don't expect much to change graphically except maybe enabling AA officially.

Playing now on the new AE7000U 3D Projector. Screen size is about 12 feet wide. I love it.

Just having a small amount of ghosting on distant objects. Not game breaking, but they are there.

At about 75% depth and middle range convergence.

I couldnt tweak it well enough to get the close-up shots of characters in cutscenes to look right. When they come on, it feels like my eyes cross so much that I can see my brain. Of course I can make the 3D settings work better, but then I get no depth and there is little point. :( I wonder if patches/new drivers could possibly ever alleviate this for me. Hope so. ATM I prefer to play it 2D, which is rare for me. Enjoying the game though!

Maybe I will give it another shot in 3D...havent tried 100% depth with low convergence yet I dont think

Cutscene are working fine for me, and I feel I have a very decent amount of over all depth.

The camera jumps all over the place in cutscenes, often causing massive popout with the screen-depth interface covering it up, causing craziness. I would either turn 3D off with cutscenes or just shut one eye when it went crazy.

DEFINITELY could use a profile. Heck, we got one for Guild Wars 2 months ago!

Blaster fire and lightning attacks look superb in 3D!

Zloth turn down the convergence and save the settings to fix the cut scene problem. The jedi sages telekinetic throw is an amazing animation in 3D, rotate the camera around so that it is between your toon and the mob and you'll think you're about to get hit in the face.

Just got my pre-order code and spent a couple of hours in-game. I'd say s3d is decent but 2d nameplates and cursor kill the immersion factor, and I was quite disappointed with overall graphics quality... Imho...

Hi All

We are aware of most of the issues on SWTOR as we have been testing the game for a while. We are working with the developer to hopefully fix these issues.

As soon as we have any details, we will be happy to share them. Thanks.

Dont bother, Andrew - this one is going to flop real fast, same as recent Bioware's Dragon Age II. What a shame.

I recall playing original SW by SoE, that was my first MMORPG, and it was awesome in terms of grabbing you and throwing into a beautifully crafted and beleivable world. Same goes to WoW and EQ2 - and both are awesome in s3d. Rift is a world you just dont belive in, and all Korean games are shallow eye candy. I enjoyed original LoTRO untill they opened "commando" schools for squirrels with each expansion - so you fight same mobs over and over again which killed the attraction. I saw huge number of servers for SWOTOR's launch, my bet is the number is going down by the end of this week.

SWOTOR comes from creators of Mass Effect, why they are on the path of making sub-par titles, eludes me.

I don't think it will flop that fast, its not going to make hardcore MMO players happy and its definitely not a WoW killer in its current form. Its just a good single player game in an MMO online environment, so it will still have a strong following for more casual players. Its even more fun if you have a few friends you can play and quest with for a co-op game experience.

As for the quality of BioWare games declining, I tend to agree and think its because they're being spread too thin. I was somewhat concerned when I found out they were working on 3 big IPs at once (ME, DA and SWTOR) while inheriting the mess of WAR. ME is still great overall, but I really felt DA1 could've been better supported after launch if they didn't have manpower being pulled toward TOR. And I think everyone saw what happened with DA2...a step back from DA and just really uninspired overall.

But ya TOR gets some things right, its just really subpar graphically. If people wanted to know how DX8 games or KOTOR OpenGL would look in 3D Vision, SWTOR is their chance to check it out. Its really that bad. Still a good experience, especially if you enjoy the BioWare styled content (basically same as KOTOR, ME, DA), but I know I'm not missing out on much by skipping it. The game has a huge following though and is starting out on a strong foot with ~3m sales/presales, so I think they have 5-6 months to refine their overall MMO identity with TOR before being declared a failure.

As I said - I only dabbled in SWTOR for a couple of hours and my negative opinion is a reflection of superb stereo-3d experience of Trine 2 and Skyrim as of late. Maybe I was expecting too much. On the other hand I asked my son, who is 19 years old and is a hard-core raider in WoW to play SWTOR on my account and tell me his impressions. Actually he was more tolerant to the cartoonish feel of Star Wars but also said he did not feel like the game "grabbed" him either.

SWTOR is inferior graphically to any active MMO on the market, I guess I'll strike Bioware from my list of AA developers for ever (DA2 was a beginning of the slide). They work on ME3 but I just wonder now, its like they have a new creative director who pushes for console-style action games. I keep active subs with WoW and EQ2, so I guess I will stick with those for now. ... No WoW killer for sure.

And this game is going down real fast, believe me, I play MMOs since forever. And Bioware having IPO talks hoping the game will make it sort of market-attractive like Blizzard... Dream on.

I think the haters in this thread are totally wrong, this game will go the distance. The only real problem I am having with the game, and a lot of others, is that no matter what setting you put the texture resolution at it won't use high quality ones. The textures are there, and if you take a photo with the holorecorder it uses the high quality textures, and you can tell the difference instantly.
