GTX 970 Displayport adapter required for ASUS VG236H (1920 x 1080) 120 Hz monitor

I recently had 3 ASUS VG236H 120HZ monitors running 3D surround in landscape mode (5860 x 1080P @ 120 Hz) with 2 MSI GTX 580 video cards. Each video cable used was a DVI-D (digital dual link) cable.
I replaced my 2 GTX 580 video cards (each with 2 x DVI-D dual-link connectors) with a single MSI GTX 970 (1 x DVI-I dual link, 1 x DVI-D dual-link and 1 Displayport V1.2 connector).
I am trying to get all 3 monitors (1920 x 1080 120 Hz) into nVidia 3D surround mode (5860 x 1080 @ 120 Hz). I can span the three monitors to (5860 x 1080P @ 60 Hz) but not (5860 x 1080P @ 120 Hz).
I can set the DVI-D and DVI-I connectors to (1920 x 1080 120 Hz) each separately. The Display port will only set to (1920 x 1080 60 Hz) with the DVI-D to displayport adapter (Rocketfish RF-DP49401 ).
Do I need a different displayport adapter or do I need another MSI GTX 970 to put in SLI to have nVidia 3D surround mode (5860 x 1080 @120 Hz) again?

You need an "active" adapter, Club 3D and Accell make them, maybe others by now.
Active adapters also have a USB cable coming out of the adapter that is used for power.
Make sure it's at least capable of 300MHz and Dual Link DVI.

I did see this item advertised but thought it was over kill for its purpose and price. $503.05 (CDN) + taxes and $45 shipping...

It would seem a lot more reasonable to purchase a second MSI GTX 970 for SLI and nVidia 3D suround.
It is disappointing that there is no difference between using the Displayport or the HDMI port for a monitor displaying 1920 x 1080P @ 60Hz. It's a shame that displayport doesn't have better capabilities.

As you can see in the following picture found on Wikipedia, a conversion chip is required.

For a single link conversion, there is enough power to do it. But to convert to Double link, extra power is required, hence the USB cable used for additional power.
Dual Link DVI has 6 more output pins than Single Link DVI.

But there is not a HDMI 2.0 to DVI Dual Link adapter, because HDMI is 19 pins and Dual Link DVI is 25 pins.

I linked the earlier versions of the Display Port to Dual Link adapters that were for 2k monitors running 2560x1600@60Hz. It was compliant with DisplayPort 1.1 specification for 1.62 and 2.7 Gbps

I received the Accell adapter yesterday and tried it with mixed success. Yes I could set 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz for the third monitor but noticed an issue. First I tested this with Windows 7 and then with Windows 10 at 5760 x 1080 @ 120 HZ. Later I tried 2D and 3D with the same resolution for Crysis 2 and Burnout Paradise.
First issue with Windows 7 and Windows 10 using 5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz surround.
My Asus VG236H with the displayport adapter connected would oddly be set to (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) and the other 2 monitors at (1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) in the full surround mode of (5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz). This was corrected by setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz, apply and then cancel to revert back to the 120 Hz setting.
After logging off or restarting my system sometimes the displayport adapter worked correctly giving (1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) but more times failed and set (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz).
I did try a different monitor as I have 3 ASUS VG236H but experienced the same random results.
Booting into Windows 10 had the same issues occasionally the correct selected resolution came up.
The nVidia control panel displayed the correct desired resolution of surround mode set (5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) even though the adapter was sending a signal of (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) to the monitor.
If you don't mind having to correct the screen resolution more often than not then you may decide to live with this issue. I don't know if there is a possibility of a firmware update for this displayport adapter, but the USB cable tag has "REV A2 3.0 F/W 2.19" printed on it.
Today's test results: Resolution not all ways set correctly to 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz
From a cold start, boot up...
1) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz correct resolution and restart.
2) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
3) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
4) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
5) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz correct resolution and restart
6) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
7) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz log off and log on.
8) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz log off and log on.
9) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
A) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
B) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart
C) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
D) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.

I tried 2 games: Crysis 2 and Burnout Paradise. Both games had no problem setting the screen resolution to correct resolution and refresh rate. 2D no problem, but when 3D enabled the monitor with the displayport connected was not in sync with the other 2 monitors. When using the nVidia active shutter glasses 2 monitors were perfectly in sync to the alternating frames. Monitor 3 was not in sync and was ghosting the 3D image. This effect was noticeable as if not using the nVidia 3D glasses on the out of sync display. After confirming this I did try a second pair of nVidia 3D shutter glasses and found the same results.
3D Surround with 3 monitors failed but I would expect this displayport adapter to work fine with just one monitor for {1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz} with only the issue of most often incorrectly displaying (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) on boot up or screen resolution change ups. I was interrupted with a pop up screen while in game and noticed the monitor at the incorrect setting. After returning to the game the correct resolution was achieved. This resolution randomness is uncontrollable and would be annoying during game story cut scenes.
So I paid my money and took my chances that this displayport adapter would fill the gap that nVidia left when choosing to use a display port with a 60 Hz limitation. Maybe a 120 Hz monitor with a displayport input could function at 120 Hz. MSI said the GTX 970's display port would do a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz but could it do a lower resolution at 120 HZ? They couldn't say that it was tried or tested. I also know that the HDMI port is limited to 60Hz as well. MSI does not test 3 party displayport adapters and can't comment further. ASUS could not offer a solution that would adapt the displayport either.
So to get proper 3D Surround at 5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz. I will need to use 2 GTX 970's with my Asus VG236H monitors. These monitors only have DVI-D and HDMI inputs. For myself the MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming cards are the best choice as they each contain a DVI-I and DVI-D connector for connecting my 3 Asus VG236H monitors. Some of the other 970's and other GTX card only have one DVI-I connector requiring 3-way SLI for 3D Surround with DVI-D monitors.
It's too bad that displayport V1.2 is not fully compatible with 120 Hz monitors with DVI-I inputs.

Yes you are correct sometimes (although very rarely) I also get that weird resolution 960x1080 in 3D Surround.
Now I noticed this problem is actually from the DP adapter.
Most of the times I solve it just by powering down the monitor (turn off) and turn on (after 5 seconds).
I also have a theory as why this happens: Most games change display modes when entering a game. Sometimes the adapter makes a mistake (for some weird reason as is a digital transmission and not analogue) and sets a wrong resolution.

That's interesting. I tried the power reset and that also worked to correct the problem. Slightly faster and easier to turn off and on the monitor than reset the refresh rate through the nVidia control panel. I noticed you have 3 Asus 144 Hz monitors and was curious if other non 60 Hz displays were experiencing this issue. This adapter is spec'ed for 120Hz , are you using 120 Hz or 144 Hz in 3D surround?
I really hoped the MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming card would do it all on one card. This is my first experience with a displayport card and its limited compatibility with DVI-D monitors. I'm curious if a displyport monitor would have no issues with setting 120 or 144 Hz. There must be others that want to keep there 3D surround setup when upgrading their video card. Now, I use the ASUS VG248 display as the center display and I use the display port connector to connect it to the display port on my 970. In other words, I use a DP 'TO' DP Cable, which I had to buy separately, but it was only like $15 USD.
So, does your display feature a display port? I saw you were reluctant to believe (can't blame you) that it was capable of going beyond 60Hz - it does. I have NO problem playing @ 5860 x 1080 x 144Hz although I play @ 120Hz.
So, if yours won't handle it, it's MSI's fault, but my bet is it would work fine, the real question is, CAN you connect via a display port on your ASUS display?

I replaced my 2 GTX 580 video cards (each with 2 x DVI-D dual-link connectors) with a single MSI GTX 970 (1 x DVI-I dual link, 1 x DVI-D dual-link and 1 Displayport V1.2 connector).
I am trying to get all 3 monitors (1920 x 1080 120 Hz) into nVidia 3D surround mode (5860 x 1080 @ 120 Hz). I can span the three monitors to (5860 x 1080P @ 60 Hz) but not (5860 x 1080P @ 120 Hz).
I can set the DVI-D and DVI-I connectors to (1920 x 1080 120 Hz) each separately. The Display port will only set to (1920 x 1080 60 Hz) with the DVI-D to displayport adapter (Rocketfish RF-DP49401 ).
Do I need a different displayport adapter or do I need another MSI GTX 970 to put in SLI to have nVidia 3D surround mode (5860 x 1080 @120 Hz) again?
Active adapters also have a USB cable coming out of the adapter that is used for power.
Make sure it's at least capable of 300MHz and Dual Link DVI.

It would seem a lot more reasonable to purchase a second MSI GTX 970 for SLI and nVidia 3D suround.
It is disappointing that there is no difference between using the Displayport or the HDMI port for a monitor displaying 1920 x 1080P @ 60Hz. It's a shame that displayport doesn't have better capabilities.

For a single link conversion, there is enough power to do it. But to convert to Double link, extra power is required, hence the USB cable used for additional power.
Dual Link DVI has 6 more output pins than Single Link DVI.

HDMI and Single Link DVI have the same amount of pins, so they are compatible.
But there is not a HDMI 2.0 to DVI Dual Link adapter, because HDMI is 19 pins and Dual Link DVI is 25 pins.
There is a HDMI cable type "B" that has the same amount of pins as a Dual Link DVI cable, but it has never been used/manufactured AFAIK, nor is their any hardware that has a HDMI output port with 29 pins. Regular HDMI only has 19 pins.

I linked the earlier versions of the Display Port to Dual Link adapters that were for 2k monitors running 2560x1600@60Hz. It was compliant with DisplayPort 1.1 specification for 1.62 and 2.7 Gbps
I didn't realize that there were active adapters that were not capable of 1920x1080@120Hz

First issue with Windows 7 and Windows 10 using 5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz surround.
My Asus VG236H with the displayport adapter connected would oddly be set to (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) and the other 2 monitors at (1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) in the full surround mode of (5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz). This was corrected by setting the refresh rate to 60 Hz, apply and then cancel to revert back to the 120 Hz setting.
After logging off or restarting my system sometimes the displayport adapter worked correctly giving (1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) but more times failed and set (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz).
I did try a different monitor as I have 3 ASUS VG236H but experienced the same random results.
Booting into Windows 10 had the same issues occasionally the correct selected resolution came up.
The nVidia control panel displayed the correct desired resolution of surround mode set (5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) even though the adapter was sending a signal of (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) to the monitor.
If you don't mind having to correct the screen resolution more often than not then you may decide to live with this issue. I don't know if there is a possibility of a firmware update for this displayport adapter, but the USB cable tag has "REV A2 3.0 F/W 2.19" printed on it.
Today's test results: Resolution not all ways set correctly to 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz
From a cold start, boot up...
1) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz correct resolution and restart.
2) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
3) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
4) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
5) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz correct resolution and restart
6) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
7) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz log off and log on.
8) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz log off and log on.
9) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
A) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
B) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart
C) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
D) 1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
E) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz shut down and restart.
F) 960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz correct resolution and use as is.
There is no rhyme or reason for the display port not setting the correct resolution.
Next test is with a game setup in 2D and 3D Surround 5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz
I tried 2 games: Crysis 2 and Burnout Paradise. Both games had no problem setting the screen resolution to correct resolution and refresh rate. 2D no problem, but when 3D enabled the monitor with the displayport connected was not in sync with the other 2 monitors. When using the nVidia active shutter glasses 2 monitors were perfectly in sync to the alternating frames. Monitor 3 was not in sync and was ghosting the 3D image. This effect was noticeable as if not using the nVidia 3D glasses on the out of sync display. After confirming this I did try a second pair of nVidia 3D shutter glasses and found the same results.
3D Surround with 3 monitors failed but I would expect this displayport adapter to work fine with just one monitor for {1920 x 1080 @ 120 Hz} with only the issue of most often incorrectly displaying (960 x 1080 @ 120 Hz) on boot up or screen resolution change ups. I was interrupted with a pop up screen while in game and noticed the monitor at the incorrect setting. After returning to the game the correct resolution was achieved. This resolution randomness is uncontrollable and would be annoying during game story cut scenes.
So I paid my money and took my chances that this displayport adapter would fill the gap that nVidia left when choosing to use a display port with a 60 Hz limitation. Maybe a 120 Hz monitor with a displayport input could function at 120 Hz. MSI said the GTX 970's display port would do a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz but could it do a lower resolution at 120 HZ? They couldn't say that it was tried or tested. I also know that the HDMI port is limited to 60Hz as well. MSI does not test 3 party displayport adapters and can't comment further. ASUS could not offer a solution that would adapt the displayport either.
So to get proper 3D Surround at 5760 x 1080 @ 120 Hz. I will need to use 2 GTX 970's with my Asus VG236H monitors. These monitors only have DVI-D and HDMI inputs. For myself the MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming cards are the best choice as they each contain a DVI-I and DVI-D connector for connecting my 3 Asus VG236H monitors. Some of the other 970's and other GTX card only have one DVI-I connector requiring 3-way SLI for 3D Surround with DVI-D monitors.
It's too bad that displayport V1.2 is not fully compatible with 120 Hz monitors with DVI-I inputs.

Yes you are correct sometimes (although very rarely) I also get that weird resolution 960x1080 in 3D Surround.
Now I noticed this problem is actually from the DP adapter.
Most of the times I solve it just by powering down the monitor (turn off) and turn on (after 5 seconds).
I also have a theory as why this happens: Most games change display modes when entering a game. Sometimes the adapter makes a mistake (for some weird reason as is a digital transmission and not analogue) and sets a wrong resolution.

That's interesting. I tried the power reset and that also worked to correct the problem. Slightly faster and easier to turn off and on the monitor than reset the refresh rate through the nVidia control panel. I noticed you have 3 Asus 144 Hz monitors and was curious if other non 60 Hz displays were experiencing this issue. This adapter is spec'ed for 120Hz , are you using 120 Hz or 144 Hz in 3D surround?
I really hoped the MSI GTX 970 4G Gaming card would do it all on one card. This is my first experience with a displayport card and its limited compatibility with DVI-D monitors. I'm curious if a displyport monitor would have no issues with setting 120 or 144 Hz. There must be others that want to keep there 3D surround setup when upgrading their video card. SLI with the 970's is a lot more expensive than my previous 2 580's. Only reason I upgraded was to be compatible with my new nVidia shield console/android TV box in the family room.
Now in 3D it also works, although I am not actually sure the display itself works at 144Hz and not at 120Hz. I think the 3D Vision driver will scale the refresh back to 120Hz as required. I say this because the glasses are created to sync at 60Hz per lens. If the monitor will flicker at 75 HZ per eye and the glasses at 60Hz per lens then we would see huge ghosting or "other eye image leaking" which is not the case;)
