Any projectors do 60Hz 1080p s3d?
  1 / 2
So I'm thinking about getting a projector for 3d gaming, but I absolutely want 1080p resolution and 60Hz. I will not compromise on either. I have heard that no projectors support this format over hdmi and that you need to use dual link dvi. Is this true and are there any projectors out there with a dvi-d input? What about display port? Will it work over display port? How do I know if a projector can do this other than emailing the manufacturer?

Others will probably confirm (I'm not a projector user myself), but from what I've seen around here you'd need a 3d-vision ready projector with a DVI input, and that doesn't exist. The best you'll get is 720/60 or (I think) 1080/24. All reports say 720/60 looks fantastic despite the lower resolution though.

What about this guy? http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-EH500-1080p-Network-Projector/dp/B00FU4X81Y It has display port. Will that work with an nvidia card that has display port for 60Hz 1080p 3d vision? What if I use display port to dvi cable adapter? My current card does not have display port.

The only ones with dvi-d I can find are digital projection models. Unfortunately I don't have $20k to spend on this. So it would have to be display port. Does anyone use display port on any monitor for 60Hz 3d 1080p? I have never even touched a display port cable. It's such a shame there aren't more projectors with dvi-d. It doesn't seem like it would add much to the cost of a projector to include it. But without it I simply will not buy.

Some cheaper projectors have DVI as well, but none confirmed as dual-link electronically. The optoma EH501 has DVI, but I don't think anyone has confirmed what display modes it supports or if it's actually dual-link. 3D vision over display port works with some BenQ monitors. You'd need to try and confirm with Nvidia whether that would be the case for any other displays.

I should clarify my statement. There are no projectors with dvi-d and an acceptable native resolution within my price range. There are many low res projectors with dvi. Edit: On optoma's page it says the EH501 does indeed have a dvi-d input. No word on if it supports a 3d mode. I emailed them about this and the other one with displayport. I'm waiting to hear back. The lamp life is not so great though. I wish there were some affordable and brighter led projectors.

Unless this is a Christmas present you have to choose right now, I'd really try and hold out. I fully expect HDMI 2.0 to have it's blowout at CES (early January) and this should finally end the non-sense of no projectors (or HDTVs for that matter) doing 1080p@60fps.

I'm sure there will be announcements about hdmi 2.0 at CES, announcements. Then I wait a few months for actual products to be released using it. Then I will probably have to wait a few more months for their prices to come down into an affordable range. So maybe this time 2014 I could think about it again. Although if they bring out an led or laser lit bright dlp with hdmi 2.0 and 3d I will spend all my money on it.

Actually it seems surprising to me that it's taken this long for non-lamp based projectors to catch on. I have a Samsung A750 and that came out a few years ago. I love not replacing lamps. I would have thought that would just be standard these days, but no almost everything is still lamps in front projectors.

Can you imagine a 3d vision announcement together with HDMI 2.0 1080p @60 hz ? No matter what, this is going to be a really interesting January with CES consumer Oculus Rift, Valve Days HMD, Nvidia mysterious january announcement, HDMI 2.0 lurking around, and who knows what more.

Oksy so according to the email I received from Epson, 3d does not work over displayport. However, the guy claims the following: "The issue here is more about the computer output and cables. The Full 3D standard is based on the use of HDMI 1.4a (and above) which has the bandwidth capability to pass the signal to the display. I’m not certain about DVI-D bandwidth. I checked cables to go and the specification for the adapter only stated that the adapter can pass through a 1080p signal. It looks like DVI-D to HDMI cables can be used with higher bandwidths." Then in another short email claims this: "Using HDMI we can accept up to 1080p 144Hz. So 60Hz is not an issue." I was under the impression that 1080p60Hz s3d is not defined in the hdmi 1.4a standard (for absolutely no good reason). So I don't think this guy knows what he's talking about. Yes the cable has the bandwidth to trasmit the signal, but the hdmi chip will not decode it. Unless they have some secret the rest of us don't know about.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Look what I found. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI HDMI 1.4b was released on October 11, 2011.[154] One of the new features is that it adds support to 3D 1080p video at 120 Hz -allowing frame packing 3D format at 1080p60 per Eye (120 Hz total) .[155] All future versions of the HDMI specification will be made by the HDMI Forum that was created on October 25, 2011 So all this time the option has been there over hdmi, since 2011. Why does everyone always talk about hdmi 1.4a? It's hdmi 1.4b that everyone is looking for to do 3d. I had never even heard of 1.4b. Time to look for a projector.

The problem you'll find is that short of buying a device and trying it, you'll struggle to find out what the results will be. HDMI 1.4b might have added support for that mode, but manufacturers don't seem bothered about it and without knowing what actual HDMI chip is inside the display you won't know if it has the bandwith to support modes like that. Remember it's got very little to do with the physical connectors. We're all hoping that HDMI 2.0 will be a fresh start and the manufacturers will get their acts together at last. And yes, sounds like the guy you spoke to at Epson doesn't know what he's talking about. Good luck in your hunt, I suspect you're starting to see why it's so frustrating!

I went through a similar search 6mo's ago. While there are plenty of professional projectors with DL-DVI or dual HDMI inputs (one for each eye) the pricing on these units are way beyond the $5K I was willing to spend. Many of us S3D fans are hoping that with the official release of HDMI 2.0 and next generation consumer 4K display devices will drive the prices down to levels affordable to dedicated gamers. While many 2D gamers poopoo 1080P and would not even consider 720P a viable option it looks surprisingly good in S3D and has the extra benefit of 'giving back' some of the CPU/GPU load/FPS required for S3D. Outside of the frame rate I honestly can't find any visual difference between 1080P/24hz and 720P/60hz.
