Hi,
I've recently gone back to playing Shogun 2. Sadly, this title has issues with some shaders in 3D. The sky "fog" effects appear at screen depth and shadows are an eyesore. Otherwise the game is surprisingly good looking - especially in 3D.
However, all hope is not lost. The game can be run on DX9. It is my understanding that games that use DX9 shaders(?) can occasionally be user-fixed. My technical knowledge is extremely limited, I've given up on even trying to do any kind of fix myself as I simply suck at this.
I figured I'd try to ask here if anyone has more knowledge on the matter before giving up on trying 3D on this title. Can a fix be done for this game? Has anyone tried to do one? Searching the internet yielded pretty much nothing but threads complaining how disappointed people were about Shogun 2 not supporting 3D, even though previous titles supported it and looked awesome with it.
Thanks.

The Sky/Fog effects are pretty easy to fix by moving them to depth.
The shadows are nearly impossible for mortals to fix, pretty much only Helix has the ability to fix those.
I had a very brief look recently at the demo, but I did not determine if a fix was feasible or not. I don't play these games tbh, I can't get into them. I seem to remember the hud icons are 2D? Could you handle disabling features? Because lots of people (myself included) could probably do that quite easily - I will say though that fixing shadows = hard. It is true that Empire Total War looks great in 3D, better than Shogun2, that much I remember.

I think removal would be fine in most of the cases, such as the fog etc, which mostly adds just a very small bit of atmosphere. I'm not certain how the game would look with shadows completely stripped.
What kind of amount of work would fixing shadows entail? Are we talking minutes or hours? I was thinking of asking a friend of mine to take a look if it's small enough - busy dude with programming work in general.
Also, would it be possible to sink in the mouse cursor to the level of depth of the terrain it's hovering over? Or are HUD elements out of reach? Because if it can't be fixed, then I'm not sure if there's much sense to even begin with the fix.

This was a game I could tell by the screenshots which elements were rendered in 2D. I love the TW series and still load up Med2 with the LotR and GoT mods now and again!
I would love to see a fix but it isn't just the shadows that are borked, certain burning effects are also 2D. To my knowledge a 2D mouse to laser target mouse converter hasn't been done yet and is unlikely here.
Really gutting. :(

Yeah Empire was probably the last TW that was OK. It has issues but very playable. Napoleon was also OK with graphical tweaking. Shogun unplayable

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Shadows - to fix shadows effort will vary from hours (by some random fluke with a probability of 10e-24) through to weeks (most likely) though to never. Helix could probably do it quickly but he does not dabble with old games on an ad-hoc basis. He puts his talents into new titles.
HUD - HUD depth is usually doable. Some games more of a pain than others depending on how many parts there are to the hud, which parts needs putting into depth, etc. This is a perfectly achievable goal for most people who have picked up and read the tutorials etc.
HUD PRESETS - The above technique sets the (chosen) hud elements at a fixed depth, but the Helix tool allows you to define up to 9 (I think) so you can have different presets for different zoom levels.
MOUSE - depending on the game, the mouse will move in depth with the hud. Or it may not. If the former you are in luck, if the latter, you are not. However, this will not map the mouse to the terrain depth, like it somehow sticks to the ground. It is possible in some games to create a dynamic crosshair by re-using a depthmap, but I am not sure if this would work for the mouse - it would require the specific hud element of the mouse cursor to be individually isolated, and sometimes this is not possible.
You could get your friend to (a) disable effects (b) push the hud into depth (c) set up a few presets. But shadows and dynamic mouse is much more of a learning curve.

.I've never in history fixed a game with 2D shadows, nor do I know of anyone that did besides helix.
Games where I've fixed them they are 3D [though can be completely wrong]. You basically need to understand the programming of the shadows and exactly what 3d vision is doing.
I HIGHLY doubt that mouse is a software mouse. Its 99% chance a hardware[Will remain 2d]. The only RTS with a hardware mouse I've ever seen is XCOM enemy unknown and people complained and it got patched out after one update.

I've only fixed shadows in 2 games, but the shadows in Overlord 2 were 2D. There's a particular method to fix them in a Pixel Shader if the technique is deferred rendered ShadowMap, and you have access to the VPM. I can PM you if you want an explanation. I haven't personally seen many games use this technique (only other one I saw was Divinity 2, but you don't have access to the VPM, it does some bodge to unproject, then applies inverse View, so I've never fixed it). Don't want to derail this thread though, so I'll also just emphasize that fixing shadows in this game is quite unlikely to happen.
I might have a quick look at the mouse though - I just checked and I still have the demo for Shogum 2 installed.

I think you'll be wasting your time on mouse. It would be amazing if it could be done but the odds are extremely slim at best.[Though I will sound like an idiot if wrong]
Maybe later on the shadows though if you wrote a post ill link to it in tools section. Im trying to focus on learning one thing at a time. I need to fully soak something in to give it the time it deserves before I can replicate it and I just learned two new techniques. Im a bit different then you normal programmers [I guess you can say I'm a 3D programmer lol.... As a 2D programmer I'm a drooling idiot]
