Noob here and unsure of how to install these mods. The steps in the blog don't make sense to me. From what I read there, this is my interpretation of how to do it (please let me know if wrong)
"To install fix only you need "Release" version of the dll.
You can find it in Release.zip"
Ok so I downloaded that, in that zip file is the file named "d3d9.dll"
So that's the one I use for every game I'm installing a Helix mod for?
It also says to then extract the shaderoverride file to the game directory.
Then I see steps saying to change the d3d9.dll file to res.dll
Is that for every game? I know some of the games have special extra instructions, but what is the right way for the simple ones. Is it just to extract that d3d9.dll file to the games directory and then extract the shader zip file and then good to go? Do you rename the dll file for everything? I'm seeing different instructions on the helix blog site and am super confused
Please help

You've gotten far more confused than you need to be :)
Everything you need for each game's fix is contained in the zip file you download from that game's fix page. You don't need to install any of the other stuff you'll find. Take this one, for example.
http://helixmod.blogspot.com.au/2013/09/brothers-tale-of-two-sons.html
1. Download the shaderoverride.zip
2. Extract it to *\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons\Binaries\Win32\ (replace * with whichever drive/directory applies for your Steam folder)
3. Play
For this specific game, you do actually need to edit one of the game's ini files as well (as noted on the fix page), but the actual installation of the fix itself is almost always just extracting one zip file to the right location.
I suspect you've been reading this guide:
http://helixmod.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/guidehow-to-install-helixmod-game-fixes.html
That's for installing a fix in conjunction with additional (non-3d related) dlls you might want to apply to games, like sweetfx or dsfix. That's a little more advanced, and not really necessary for you right now (unless you're playing Dark Souls).

For most fixes you'll only need to unzip the zip file to the correct folder, they'll already include the correct release(d3d9.dll) dll specific to the debug dll that was used to make the fix and the ShaderOverride. Most fixes will be structured like so:
ShaderOverride(Folder)
d3d9.dll
DX9Settings.ini
There are some older fixes that are just include the fixed Shaders(ShaderOverride folder) that require you to download the d3d9.dll separately, in those cases you just need to download and unzip both to the game's EXE location.
The other stuff, like renaming to res.dll, is if you're using other dx9 mods with HelixMod. So that's unnecessary if all you want to do is fix the 3D aspect of the game.

Ok So I found the mod for a game that I have that does not require any extra instructions on the helix mod page
"contrast"
The game is installed here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Contrast
I don't see a game exe file in that folder. Do I still extract the mod to that directory or does it have to always bee the same directory as the game's exe file?
In the path that I gave, there's 4 other folders:
_commonredist
binaries
contrastgame
engine
and a file called "installscript.vdf"
I was able to find the contrastgame (application file) in this directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Contrast\Binaries\Win32
So is that the same directory the mod should be installed to?

Most of the mod pages will tell you where to find the exe, looks like this one doesn't. But yes, that's the correct location. If you find yourself looking through a game's folders to find the exe, good places to look are:
binaries
win32
x86
x64
bin
