Is it possible to remove players' names in L4D2?
I know how to remove the crossair, which is good.
But does any1 know how to remove the players' names. They can be very annoying sometimes.

Thanks!

Totally agree, the screen depth player names ruin the 3D experience. The only way to disable them in multiplayer is to play in Realism mode. In single player, you can get rid of them but you have to enable cheats (so you won't gain any Steam achievements whilst playing with them off). To do so, paste the text below into a new file in notepad and save it as autoexec.cfg in your Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg directory:

alias "namestoggle" "namesoff"
alias "namesoff" "cl_drawhud 0; alias namestoggle nameson"
alias "nameson" "cl_drawhud 1; alias namestoggle namesoff"
bind s "namestoggle"
bind BACKSPACE "toggle sv_cheats"

You can replace the keys I use ("s" and BACKSPACE) with others if you prefer. Then fire up L4D2, bring up the console while still in the menu and type "map " (without the quotes). A list of all the map names will appear and you can scroll through them to select the one you want to play. Once it's loaded, hit BACKSPACE to turn on cheats and then you can toggle the names on and off by pressing the "s" key (or whichever key you replaced "s" with in the autoexec.cfg). Another drawback is that when the names are disabled you'll also not be able to see your health and ammo on the right side of the screen.

the names don't affect me, and I have the 3d crosshair. is there something I'm missing?

Screen depth player names have a very negative impact on the quality of the 3D experience in the game. Have a look at these two images from the original L4D and you'll see that the player names look much better when rendered at the correct depth:

In-game stereo screenshot

Edited version in which the player names have been moved to the correct depth

(The best way to compare them is to download them both and then start a slideshow in the 3D image viewer consisting of both images. You can then flick from the first to the second by left clicking, and back to the first by right clicking. Focus your eyes on Bill's face and you'll see that it's much easier to read the player names in my version than it is in the unedited one which requires you to totally refocus your eyes to read them).

I don't get this, how can the players names ruins the 3D experience? I've never played Realism mode, only Campaign and single player and I don't see any problems with the player's name. I can read without problems Nicky, coach or any other player that joins multi mode.

With drivers 1.17 the crosshair is perfect and precise and it's in 3D you don't even need the Nvidia red crosshair. So why removing the game's crosshair???

The only issue that somehow's affect the 3D experience is the water reflection which is in 2D. That's the only issue I've found so far in this game.

I see the difference however as I said it doesn't affect me in game play. I never focus much on the names hovering above the players and when i do it's not difficult for me to figure what name belongs to which avatar. I guess i just tuned it out

Download the two stereo images I linked to above and compare them in a slide show in the stereo viewer -you'll see that player names look much better when drawn at the correct depth. The issue isn't that screen depth player names can't be read, it's that it's impossible to focus on a character at the same time as their name when they're drawn at widely differing depths -if you focus on the name, the character will be doubled (and vice versa).

There are major bugs in the 1.17 drivers which prevent them working with many (if not most) types of stereo capable monitors, so lots of users are unable to use them and are stuck with the 1.15 drivers which don't contain a L4D2 profile (and therefore don't have a 3D in-game crosshair).

If you look harder you'll see the game is riddled with problems in 3D. I describe them in the thread I linked to in my previous post (with example images), but briefly they include the following:

-Player name tags drawn at screen depth instead of the depth of the corresponding character.

-Pop-up labels for things like levers or buttons which you're required to interact with drawn at screen depth instead of the depth of the corresponding object.

-"3D skybox" objects (the distant 3d objects like the tower blocks surrounding the roof-top level of Mercy hospital in L4D1) are also drawn at an incorrect depth so that they appear to be closer to the player than other nearer objects which obscure them.

-In the first game the 3D crosshair was frequently drawn further away than the object you were aiming at, reducing accuracy and making it look like your target was partially transparent. The implementation with the 1.17 drivers may be better but I'm unable to test it properly due to the fact that the bug I mentioned before prevents these drivers from recognizing my monitor.

-Spitter goo doesn't render correctly in 3D.

-Water reflections aren't rendered correctly in 3D.

-Water effects aren't drawn on those parts of the water which would have been obscured by a character if you were playing in 2D. This leads to an apparent doubling of the edges of character models when they stand in front of water in 3D (as each eye can see areas of the water which wouldn't have been visible in 2D).

-Sometimes you'll see misplaced blue glow effects around objects at an incorrect depth (although this can be fixed by ALT+TABing out of the game and back in).

DD

Have same problem in Left4Dead2. Big omission from Nvidia Maybe we can turn of it like crosshair 0? cl_drawhud 0 is cheat 8( In Realism game mode there's no players nicknames. But Nvidia 3D Vision crosshair doesn't work! P.S Why avatar does't work here?
