3D Vision and Duel Video Cards (GTX280's) Lets see
  1 / 2
I have duel gtx 280s, 3.0 extreme quadcore whatever, im not much of a tech guy with computers, but i racked up a bunch of money from a deployment to iraq and blew it on an alienware :). I know i could have built it by myself but whatever. I got a high end gaming machine, with those 2 video cards, how can i potentially use them to its fullest, speaking of terms using the 3D Visions with it and also not using. Im not sure how my machine is using both video cards anyway. If yall could provide some insight on this please feel free, or how i can benefit the most using them.

Thanks!

Hi CPL Buczak

3D Vision today supports 2-way SLI (meaning 2 graphics cards working together). Like all normal gaming, SLI helps 3D Vision by providing more power to play games faster. Since 3D Vision uses more GPU rendering power to display two eye views, SLI helps to make the games faster.

I a running an Alienware GTX 280 SLI setup as well and it is super fast. Lately I have been playing Left 4 Dead and Burnout Paradise and they both look and play fantastic.

Hope this helps.

I have an SLI setup as well (2 x gtx 280) and they appear to work well with 3D Vision in SLI mode. Since the game essentially has to render 2 x 1680 x 1050 screens for stereoscopic display the more GPU power you have the better (and SLI helps a LOT).

I also have a pair of 280's in SLI and the second graphics card is really pulling its weight now with 3D stereo enabled. The performance increase from 1-2 GPUs is much more noticable now than it was before trying to render games in stereo.

Hi

Yes since SLI supports multi-mon you can connect two displays and still have SLI enabled. The second display wont be used for the 3D, but the primary one can be used in stereoscopic 3D mode. I was actually doing this test today with Burnout Paradise and World of Warcraft and it worked fine for me.

So Andrew, you are having no flickering with SLi turned on? Sounds like my rig is pretty similar to yours (dual GtX280's.. Blackbird 002) yet I find several games that flicker every 5 seconds with Sli on yet run smooth with it off. Specifically Mirrors Edge, Fallout, Need for Speed Underworld have a flickering problem with Sli for me. I will have to recheck which ones dont flicker but so far it is the exception rather than the rule.

I have all the latest drivers installed. However I am unsure of whether you can have different stereo driver numbers than GEForce driver numbers. As I recall that used to be a No No with the old XP drivers? I am 181.22 GeForce but 182.07 stereo and 3d vision drivers? Is there a 182.07 GeForce and does it matter??

We recommend the 1.05 CD which is 182.05 GPU and 182.07 stereo. Please use that setup and let me know your results.

Also are you running Vista 32-bit or 64-bit?

I am using the 32 bit version. i reinstalled with only the 1.05 Cd and am still getting the same issue. I got Burnout paradise to try since i understand you are having no problems with it and get the same result with SLi turned on... i.e. flickering every 10 seconds or less and then a shutdown in stereo every now and then which requires a repress of the stereo enable button. I have turned off multimonitor, switched USB ports in an attempt to isolate the problem with SLI.. so far no joy. It works perfectly in non SLI mode.

Here it is:

basically a stock Blackbird 002 exhilaration edition
Extreme quad core QX9770
Motherboard nforce 790i Ultra
Vista Ultimate 32 bit
dual GTX280
using onboard sound/ creative titanium card disabled (see below for why)

If I had to question anything suspicious about my hardware I might suspect my motherboard Bios which has been reported to have a problem with random noise when using creative sound cards and SLI. Also a problem that disappears when you turn off SLI.
