Also, you guys can vote with your dollars. Nvidia isn't the only game in town. The iZ3D driver fully supports checkerboard format and its free for AMD users. DDD TriDef Ignition also fully supports checkerboard format. Both drivers will work on Nvidia or AMD cards and even XP if you really want (of course Vista/7 are also supported).

Do newly released DLP TVs (such as 92 inch Mitsubishi) still work on checkerboard only or do they support frame sequential 3D like the projectors? If they are still checkerboard, there is no way they can force us to use 1280x720/60. At that resolution in checkerboard, only 1/2 of the screen is usable, rest is just blank. Its how checkerboard works...

Also, you really don't need to use 3D TV play to use the new DLP TVs. 3D vision bundle and glasses will work fine if they still have the 3D Sync port, and if they don't...you can still use 3D vision base with a pair of DLP Link glasses.

But if you have the HDMI 1.4 LCd or Plasma...even if it supports checkerboard, you're screwed with 3D TV Play.

Good to know Cyber. I was wondering if TriDef supports checkerboard, iZ3D game support is hit or miss. Thanks for the info, I'll try them.

Interesting point. The new 92" Mits is not available until this summer so I don't know if it will even have a 3D Sync Port. I do know that Mits is going to have the emitter built-into these new sets and I'm pretty sure that the HDMI inputs will all be 1.4 (Not 1.3) since they had a firmware update for all 2010 sets to 1.4.

So if NO 3d sync port.....then I'm afraid the new 92" DLP will be 3DPlay only(HDMI 1.4)!!! Thats not good for selling these new sets!

Indeed what he says is correct. nVidia simply has stolen the 1080p@60Hz checkerboard support from 3D vision owners with HDMI 1.4 TVs, even if the TV (like Samsung) supports it.

And 1080p@60Hz checkerboard is far superior to 720p@60Hz frame packing, that's for sure.

To get checkerboard back, you have to do 2 things:

1) Fool the driver to think it is conneted to a HDMI 1.3 TV
2) Provide a dummy sync signal to the 3D vision emitter to surpress the red "No 3D sync signal input" error message overlay


I have the first achived with a Gefen DVI Detective programmed with the EDID of my old HDMI 1.3 Samsung.
The second requires a TTL level squarewave generator of roughly 60Hz connected to the 3D sync-in of the 3D vision emitter.

I know this is not a solution for everyone and also not cheap, so nVidia has effectively locked out most customers from this superb 3D mode.

But if enough people complain I still have hopes...

3DTV Play is invoked when the setup wizard detects an HDMI 1.4 input, so how does DLP Link glasses bypass 3DTV Play? How do the glasses work, how are they different from any other 3D glasses?

DLP link works based off the white flash that the DLP technology omits every time it shows a frame. They sync with the TV automatically when you switch it in to 3D mode. No IR required. But wait...you are saying the 3D TV drivers kick in automatically when HDMI 1.4 is detected?

7. Enjoy 3D

But if 3D vision and 3D TV is the same driver and it just switches on the fly depending on the HDMI port version...there goes this idea down the toilet.

I spoke to nvidia customer support today (jan.18) to find out marketing's reaction to the request for checkerboard support on HDMI1.4 TVs. The marketing guy, the one who can make it happen, asked "how many people want this checkerboard mode?" Guys, you need to make the call to nvidia customer care. Don't ask "why is checkerboard not supported?" They will just say "because it isn't". Tell them that you know that the support is built into all drivers, so fix the program to allow HDMI1.4 users to access checkerboard mode. There is no reason why this cannot be done since the support is already there. 408-486-2300 San Jose, California.

I had to send my Mitsubishi WD-73838 HDMI 1.4 set out for service because of a stupid issue with static IP not working. Anyway, I still have my Sammy HL-67A750 HDMI 1.3 set. Just Cause 2 would only run in crappy 720p mode in a weee little window (about the size of an LCD TV /haha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':haha:' /> ) in the center of my screen on the Mitsubishi, but runs in full 1080p checkerboard glory on the Sammy. Never changed drivers, just unplugged the Mitsu and plugged in the Sammy. So that checkerboard mode IS in there. Just disabled for HDMI 1.4 TVs.

720p = NOT how it's meant to be played!

The Mits should fill the screen in 720P while gaming. Be sure the game is set to 1280x720/60 under the video options in the game. In control panel > set up stereo 3D, it should say '3DTV Play' with the Mits attached assuming you used 260.xx drivers or later. What do you see under set up stereo 3D? 3D Vision? DLP selected?
The Mits should fill the screen in 720P while gaming. Be sure the game is set to 1280x720/60 under the video options in the game. You guys are probably better off contacting Mitsubishi than dealing with Nvidia. It is likely Mitsubishi still might have some time left on their contract with Nvidia, meaning that Nvidia would be legally obligated to provide checkerboard support. If you got in contact with the right person at Mitsubishi, they could put pressure on Nvidia to comply. If you guys don't know, these display manufacturers have to pay yearly license fees to Nvidia in order for them to support the device in their 3D driver. How much this costs is a mystery. $50,000? $100,000? $500,000??? I don't know. But don't expect just because something worked yesterday that it will work tomorrow. Better start archiving every version of the Nvidia drivers before they take them off the internet. Probably the best thing we have going right now *IS* actually HDMI 1.4a, since its a common standard that not one company controls. The only problem is that its gimped to 720P currently because the HDMI chipsets can't support higher. But sometime soon it will support 1080P60 (could be this year, maybe next year, I don't know). And at that point everything should just work. Thats the idea.

If using the TVs glasses, the sync port has no relevance for all 1.3 and 1.4 equiped sets. The problem is that the HDMI1.4 disables 3D Vision setup for all post 258.xx drivers meaning that anyone who bought a HDMI1.4 TV + 3D Vision kit finds that 3D Vision game support ends as of March 2010. So those 1.4 people are clearly getting screwed...can't play any game that was released after Spring 2010. That means all 2010 TVs have no sync port. Doesn't matter because if you bought a 2010 Samsung, you have the Samsung glasses so no need for a sync port.

All Mits DLPs have terrible 2D image quality, so they are a non-starter for me. Best solution is to get a 1.4 TV of your choice, then do the hardware hack to defeat Nvidia's HDMI1.4 boobey trap that's built into all post 258.xx drivers. If you get a Mits with HDMI1.3, then you need not do the hack, everything will just work under 3D Vision.

If using the TVs glasses, the sync port has no relevance for all 1.3 and 1.4 equiped sets. The problem is that the HDMI1.4 disables 3D Vision setup for all post 258.xx drivers meaning that anyone who bought a HDMI1.4 TV + 3D Vision kit finds that 3D Vision game support ends as of March 2010. So those 1.4 people are clearly getting screwed...can't play any game that was released after Spring 2010.
And for the second biggest question: Do the new HDMI 1.4-equipped Mitsubishi/Samsung DLP TVs come with the old 3D Sync port seen in TVs made only a year or two ago, or did they all abandon it and use the HDMI 1.4/Blu-ray 3D standard only?
Samsung has no sync port on HDMI1.4 TVs, the emmiter is built into the TV. That means all 2010 TVs have no sync port. Doesn't matter because if you bought a 2010 Samsung, you have the Samsung glasses so no need for a sync port.

I'm really glad I caught this thread because I was thinking of taking the plunge later this year on a nice Sammy/Mitsu DLP TV. If this is all true, I will definitely be looking for an older model Mitsubishi or Samsung, one with HDMI 1.3 and actually comes with (and 3D Vision allows the use of) the 3D Sync port.
Be careful, the 2009 sammys have severe problems with 3D gaming. All Mits DLPs have terrible 2D image quality, so they are a non-starter for me. Best solution is to get a 1.4 TV of your choice, then do the hardware hack to defeat Nvidia's HDMI1.4 boobey trap that's built into all post 258.xx drivers. If you get a Mits with HDMI1.3, then you need not do the hack, everything will just work under 3D Vision.
