thanks, ad5os. I just tested GE again, but it's still not working in 3d : -(
I also went through all the settings in Nvidia Control Panel but I don't see anything that would prevent stereo in GE.
could it be that notebook version of GeForce driver (for GTX 460M in my case) is not supporting stereo in GE...? if so, why would Nvidia enable stereo in desktop card driver and not in mobile driver??

Do you have 3d Vision? I am using driver 266.66. Did you go to settings in google earth and make sure you are using DirectX instead of openGL? Did you restart the program after you changed it to directx? Are you using the latest version of Google Earth? I have 5.2.1.1588. If you go to Help then about google earth this is what I see.

ad5os, thanks so much for your kind report. yes, I have 3D Vision and GE is in DirectX. I had the latest GE v.6, but I reinstalled it to 5.2.1.1588 as you suggested, and still no luck. so now all the settings are the same as yours, except my GF driver is v.266.45, which is the latest driver for 460M, that is, mobile, whereas your desktop's GF latest driver is 266.66.
however, Nvidia claims that, starting with release 260, drivers support GE in 3D. so again, could be that mobile version of the driver still doesn't. go figure...

weird.... I would contact Nvidia and figure out if that is the case or not.... I doubt that there is much difference between those drivers. If you can run a good directx 9 game in 3d you should be able to do google earth!

Hi - agree with the above: Nvidia just did not make GE stereo 3d.
You can easily test for yourself:
1. In GE go to some mountain area (Alpes or so)
2. Look at the earth at a very low angle and turn it in the way that you see one mountain peak very close and another far away at the same time.
3. Take off the glasses. Now you see both peaks double (one image for the left eye, and one dor the right).
4. You will found out that the distance between the left eye / right eye picture of the near peak is the same as for the far peak.
If it was 3D stereo, then the left eye / right eye pictures of the far peak would be closer together than the ones of the near peak.
I attached an image to illustrate the above: [attachment=20031:Nvidia-no-3d.jpg]

Quite disappointing. I guess a lot of people were waiting for GE 3D stereo support.

Well I for one am not complaining!

But he is right... the 3d effect isn't right cause distant objects should in both eyes appear about in the same place.. but the effect is still better than no effect. I would rather see Google try to fix this issue as I feel they might have more interest in getting a real 3D solution than Nvidia. The 3d effect is really only effective when in motion... other wise you get this pseudo 2D/3D effect.. but it is closer!

Hi All

I'm glad some of you are trying this feature and I wanted to jump in and comment.

[list]
[*]We are working with Google to try to improve the 3D experience. We agree it could be better, but its a start. Overall, do you like it? If so, comment more and I can show Google this thread as positive reaction to support.
[*]Notebooks. If you are using a notebook, currently our Window Mode driver support does not work on Google Earth (or games). This was done since we didnt have time to complete testing in Release 265 drivers. So any of you with a mobile GPU, you wont be able to use it right now. The good news is with our next major driver update is that we will add support for notebooks to use this feature. So stay tuned its coming soon.

If there are any questions, please ask.

It works great for me. I am getting stereo on 3D buildings and terrain! Only downer is that I tried the plane-thing thing because the controls dont work but that's doesnt detract from the quality of the S3D which is cool!

So cool in fact that my mate, who lives in the Lake District, says the view and landscape from his house (on GE) looks just like the analogue one!

Thanks! If there was a way google could the convergence right so that it is a true stereo view per eye that would be great. Please show Google this... It would be a killer APP for 3D vision... I bet if you put this on display at stores like Best Buy it would sell more than just say video games. Maybe there is a way to ask Google to make the DirectX implementation in full screen to be the same as a video game?

Andrew, thanks for your post, it's always good to have a reply directly from Nvidia.
First let me say that we appreciate Nvidia providing 3D support for many applications, such as GE. I built a 3D system based on Nvidia solutions (3D Vision capable workstations, notebook, projector, etc.) and it's crucial for my professional work. keep on good work!

that said, I wish this GE-on-notebook issue was explained publicly, so we didn't have to spend our time trying to make it work,,, unlike desktop GPU users.

actually, it is not clear from your answer if GE in 3D on mobile GPU is not working in window mode ONLY, or not at all (even in full screen)?
if it IS working in fullscreen, can you please tell us how? (see my previous post on my settings.)
also, when can we expect this new driver for mobile GPU to be released (that supports 3D GE)?

thank you for your help!

It's only the windowed mode that does not work. The problem is GE is a windowed application. You can go "Fulllscreen" but it's not real fullscreen like in games. Andrew made it clear: "If you are using a notebook, currently our Window Mode driver support does not work on Google Earth (or games). So any of you with a mobile GPU, you wont be able to use it right now. "
So I'm afraid you must wait.

I appreciate also the support for windowed application a lot. But without the possibility to adjust convergence in GE, its not very useful. (Thinking about PCSX2 /rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />)
Oh and by the way: It's not Google's fault that the 3D Vision Driver is not working properly. IZ3D had it working since a long time with their driver, including the ability to change the convergence. So I guess, Nvidia just needs to do a bit of work. I hope we get proper GE (and hopefully PCSX2) support soon.

Hi

We did post the 3D Vision window mode support policy on the driver release notes pages. You will see that its different for notebook vs. desktop GPUs. But that's not the point - you are right it was hard to really know the difference unless you paid attention. We should have developed an FAQ for that. I will look into that.

Google Earth doesnt support true fullscreen mode that our current driver architecture for games uses to work, so Google Earth requires Window mode support. So the long answer is, just want for our next driver release to supprot notebook GPUs with all Window mode features.
