"1080p display, 90-degree field of view" Interesting. I am still crossing my fingers that it will be pc compatible one way or another. 90 FOV is high but I think it can still be a good 3D display. 110 of rift kind of cuts out possibility of non-vr designed games. I suppose time will tell. Now heres where I am concerned though. Is it 1080P FSBS [3840X1080P] / 1080P TOTAL. ----------------------------------- To be honest not enough info to be excited or not.

How could the PS4 render 1080P 3D ? There is only one 3D game on the PS4 and that's Trine.

Probably smart PR not to specifically mention "3D." The term carries a lot of negative baggage that "VR" doesn't. I can't imagine it's not 3D though.

Sounds like reduced gfx to me One great thing is that since they have overlapping partners (Unity, Unreal, etc) it will only mean more VR cross-platform development because it is now more economically viable for big-name devs
How could the PS4 render 1080P 3D ? There is only one 3D game on the PS4 and that's Trine.
HSBS 3D can be done pretty easily. Which what is what I fear.[1920x1080p] However I do think its FSBS [3840x1080P] as both danielM and I realized. Because he answered a question in such a way that it seemed like he dodged the answer. Q: Games will be "very intensive graphically," but will the overall quality be reduced in order to render it in three dimensions? A:"The graphics are so rich because you're immersed. It's a different kind of feeling." Which really sounds like reduction of graphics. ---------------------- TBH, I wouldn't get excited even if you think its the second comming. It just sounds REALLY far off. Like 1-2years, specs aren't final. Design is no where close to final. Developers don't have it. I understand that Sony will be able to get traction faster then Oculus but it still sounds at least a year off.

Sony's marketing people would understand that "VR" carries much more cache than "3D" does, for whatever stupid reason. It'd be absurd to make a VR tech that isn't 3D, especially when the only other meaningful competitor at the moment is already 3D. PS4 users can't just go out and buy a 2nd GPU like we do :)

Those ps2-quality graphics are gonna be sooooo immersive It's gonna be a, long 5 years for console games, I must say - never have they been such utter garbage in comparison to PC I'm getting a late 90s PC gaming vibe these days, and lordy if I'm not enjoying it a bit too much!

I wouldn't knock PS4 as far as VR graphics. To be honest I think Rift will be getting the same "graphical" games as PS4 VR for a very long time. Developers will be using unity/udk cause it makes it so much easier not to mention you are designing games where you want 60frames per second and frame drops are like a sin on "all consumer hardware". Building graphical games for VR is just a hassle and will not get you extra sale not to mention much more work. Now that PS VR is official even less of a reason. That makes unity/udk even more essential since you want to release your game on multiple platforms. It just reduces costs so much. Some people see VR as a few steps forward in immersion which is true. But its going to be two steps back as far as graphics. With 3D vision, no one really gave a crap. We are "enthusiasts" in a "niche" genre. Can't run it well, buy another video card. Though I guess thats why Nvidia keeps us around lol.

The consoles have finally caught up to PC, meanwhile PC games today look much the same as they did 3 years ago. I'm still waiting for that next-gen feel, yet the closest any game has come to it is Crysis 3 which was from a year ago. I think eqzitara's right about VR hurting graphics if anything. I guess it'll be similar to how people embraced terrible Wii graphics because they loved the motion control so much. Or, in the mid-90s, how we all abandoned beautiful hand-drawn 2D graphics for awful blocky, aliased games like Tomb Raider or Doom.

Looks like Xbox One is working on their own version. I hope all these devices will be close enough that devs will be able to develop for all of these units at once.

Well if its true thats kind of lol. Games as is have trouble with 720P on xbox one. Though they would have greatest advantage of xbox/pc. If its just xbox well, they might as well burn there money *IF* it is true. I still don't think the one has enough junk in its trunk though. VR FOV + 720P = gross. ---------------------------- The PS4/Rift are very similiar. All the major "players" who supports Rift supports the PS4 VR. The main battle is getting game 3D/HUD/Function properly with headtracking [basically stuff breaks]. After that its kind of simple imo. Its more of an issue to port games at that point [rewriting code] though I guess you can keep Opengl for PC and its a lot less work. Though is kind of moot if people go with an engine that does most of the work like udk/unity.

I thought the TF2 solution from Valve was perfect The HUD is literally a HUD *inside* the game world - it "sticks" to your head movement, independently of your head tracking in the game world.
