Looking for a cool analogy for gaming in 3D I keep writing them for 3D sceptics so want a goodie!
What about...

Imagine walking around and the only way to see the world was from the lense of the video camera you were holding. Its fun at first using the camera screen as your eyes but imagine having to use it to view the world like that for a few hours...

Imagine the difference being able to see properly using your eyes in our depth filled world. That is exactly what gaming in 3D is, especially when playing FPSs! Appart from you need to put on glasses...

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Nice thread. I am always struggling to explain to people why 3d is so much different than 2 d.

Some of the analogies I have found useful are:

A 2 d picture to me is much like a where's Waldo game where you have to search for patterns amidst the jumbled colors. In 3 d the objects jump out from each other and clearly separate.

2d is cyclops vision

Another one which struck me was from one of the Hollywood producers talking about how 3 d adds mass to the world. You can almost feel the mass of a dragon in witcher. You don't have to calculate w your mind what those lines and colors might represent in reality. It is reality vision.

3D on projector looks at least 60% better compared to 2D and if you have decent force feedback device that adds around 20-30-40% immersion to the equation, so at the end you play a whole different game!!

Analogy with sound. Small soundboxes today always have at least 2 channels stereo no matter how small they are. A lot have 5.1 or even 7.1 audiosystems when only one speaker is enough to hear the sound. :P
Could we have a similar situation regarding stereoscopy please? /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thanks guys!

I have often used the sound one: Going from stereo to mono. It is a fairly accurate one.

edit
I often use this to explain why it is hard to go back to 2D from 3D maybe not to describe what 3D is like if you know what I mean.
Thanks guys!

How about: "3d is to a gamer what a bicycle is to a fish." ? :D

Human vision works in 3D because we have two front pionted eyes. So the easiest way to see in 2d is to shut one eye. Now at first your brain will compansate for the change with no intitial onset of "Hmm, this all looks so flat". But keeping one eye shut for a long duration will cause the world around you to go Flat.

I think of it like this. "TV, thats a gimmick, radio broadcast is the way" -1935

"Color TV, all hype" -1965

"HD TV? What, I have a great picture on my Sony, whats with HD, I don't think it would make it better than my Sony" -2001

In the future, there little left to the 2D image and one day tt will be considered retro.

The problem with 3D is not 3D in itself which is natural, but how it is rendered and captured.

I think rendering is ok now (I own a samsung 3dtv UE46D7000 and Avatar was almost better than at the theater).

The problem is how it is caputerd.
Many (too many) movies have sorts of 2d layers on a 3d field. That's awful.

3D Games should be ok..

I wonder when a good 3D director will come up with good and lifelike 3D shootings...

On another angle: we don't see word il 3D from a distance; we are immersed into it.

Star trek-like Holosuites are the way to go but they are still way out of reach. :(

Playing games in 2D is like eating a hot dog without ketchup or mustard.
