Decline of 3D Vision - Thought you all should know - Dark Times Ahead :(
  5 / 14
:D bo3b, thanks, i hope you are right. Sometimes i think - was it good for me to begin to play 3D when 3D Vision released? My friends that never saw 3D gaming do not have have this problem - to check does the game support 3D before buying it. Checking this forum, checking Helix page, asking 3D support quality and then making a descision - buy or not to buy. They simply buy it and enjoy it. Sometimes i envy them. THEY ARE TOTALLY HAPPY PLAYING 2D! But on the other hand.. it's like you try to drive perfect and expensive car for some time and you can never drive some cheap crap again after that, becouse you simply tried something much better. It is nature of life. Unfortunately, Nvidia had bad advert of 3D Vision all this years. Many, no, M A N Y ppl never knew what is that and how games looks in 3D. Some of them still thinks that 3D gaming is the same crap as 3D films in cinema. So basicly many gamers are simply nit noticed what they may have. ALL my friends that played 3D at my home liked it much, even sceptics. Anyway, in spite of we are all angry on Nvidia, we should all to do 3 things: Thank Nvidia for 3D Vision and thousands of hours of great 3D experience. Thank all these people that made huge work for all us, 3D gamers. And the last thing, we should hope that ppl like eqzitara, bo3b, mike or others specialists will continue to give a life to 3D gaming.

This makes me feel like going out of retirement. My goal is to start learning shader fixes but I would really like to collaborate regularly with someone and Learning the art of shader fixes together. I'm less inclined to work alone without anyone to talk to. I expect to begin small. Anyone interested?

Reading thorough this whole thread so far;)) And I can't help to compare it with.... DARK SOULS.. yeah you got it right ...DARK SOULS... Why? Well, for anyone who played the games DS and more important DS2...you will inevitably understand one thing: CYCLE... The flame is lit...an Age of Fire starts and exists...The Flame slowly starts to dim...the Undead appear.. The Flame keeps on dimming until one brave Undead rekindles the Flame so a new Age of Fire starts...CYCLE... The same is with people... They come they do things and at some point they want to retire...and new people come instead to do the same thing;)) Now, since that analogy is done... I understand about why they want to leave...but, I still believe they will not sit completely idle... (call me an optimist if you want) and we will still see some activity from their part... Now here comes the BOMB: - The reason I believe people are very "doomy and gloomy" is because they were expecting all the newest games to be fixed by them so, they can just download the fix & Enjoy !!! (I know that at some point so many fixes were rolling out, that I wasn't able to keep the pace with it and was thinking like: "Ofc I will buy this game... I bet HelixMod already has it fixed"). - Now since Mike and Eqzitara said they will retire this will not be the case... And this is were everything is screwed up: - People started to expect fixes from them like they were owned by Nvidia (or any other company/corporation) and they would get revenue for their work... which we know is false. - They are just passionate people/gamers who have a passion for 3D and wanted to experience the best of the best from their games. Now, when they will leave, they will not take the tools with them and let us in the blue with our fingers in our.....pocket ^_^. The tools are and will still be THERE... and is up to US to make fixes, if we want to play a game in 3D. I bet they will still be around and they will help WHOEVER wants to start fixing games in 3D. - The same thing I did with the OGL-Wrapper... There is no point in being just me who makes a fix for an OpenGL game. If I decide I want to stop... that ability would be lost for everyone. So instead I tried to open-source it as much as possible... give it to other people so they can start looking around and learn how all things tie togheter... - I remember using the HelixMod 2 years ago... It literally took me 20 minutes to find a shadow shader and disable it in Divinity 2 (what I was playing at the time). So is not hard!!! and can be done by anyone who really wants to contribute!!! So... If we want 3D Vision patches to go on... we need to be a strong and real community including patching games;)) not only exchanging ideas and thoughts;)) I will stop now;)) Since I expect I could probably type for another hour;))

I wish to thank those whom made fixes for games and helped make 3DVision a viable product for so many years. Your time, effort and dedication to the community is something we're all thankful for. Thankfully I have a decent backlog of games that I've yet to play or finish and with age comes "foggy memory" so replaying titles I've already enjoyed is always an option. On a positive note, the tools are still there. Granted the limited documentation might frustrate all but a few to try their hand at this sort of thing and maybe fewer still maybe successful at it. Bob is still working on the DX11 wrapper and one never knows if Helix himself might resurface with his own DX11 solution. It has been pretty clear to many/most of us that Nvidia has little or no interest in supporting 3DVision. While their 'compatibility mode' seemed like an 'olive branch' of sorts and a possible path into the future with DX11 titles (and above?) unless Nvidia is able to engineer in, license or purchase IP to provide at least Tridef level of functionality/visual quality and gain SLI performance in the process my next video card purchases will be with the Red Team.

I'm happy for all that Eqzitara and Mike have given us, and I wish them the best in their next efforts. I can personally say it was a pleasure and a thrill to be able to help Mike testing his AC3 fix. Considering these guys did it as a hobby, it only makes sense that they eventually got burned out on it. While I'm not in the "fuck Nvidia" camp, I think Eqzitara's post on Helixmod makes a good case and I think it's good for them to put pressure on Nvidia. I agree with bo3b's posts here. People thought it was over when Helix became inactive. Then along game 3DMigoto and Mike who gave us a handful of fixes we never thought we'd get. The tools are all there, and the talent is probably out there. Sometimes we even get the game that runs good with no fix at all, such as Dark Souls II. Might Nvidia 3D Vision be on its way out? Yes, it might. But even if so, there is always Tridef, and more significantly Oculus Rift on the horizon. It's not the end of 3D gaming at all. Worst comes to worst, we'll need new/different hardware, but that's not a big deal in the long run.

Wanted to thank Helix, eqzitara, mike_ar69 and everyone else who has contributed to fixing games for 3D Vision. Having said that though there's enough fixed games to play to keep me going for 5+ years, and plenty of the fixed games I've already played in S3D are very replayable (heck I just played Thief and Thief 2 in S3D last year and those games are like 15 years old). Even if nvidia turned around and dropped 3D Vision support tomorrow (which btw wouldn't stop their old drivers from working), I'd still have a nice 120Hz screen, so I don't regret getting into 3D Vision one bit and I've had a great time with it over the last 5 years. I know a lot of people hate nvidia for neglecting 3D Vision, but let's face it, it hasn't sold well enough to warrant better support from either them or developers/publishers. It's sad but even amongst PC gamers there's still a general apathy to stereo gaming. So while there may be lean years ahead, this isn't the end of 3D Vision or stereo gaming.

Since DX11 and fake stereo mode by Nvidia, we KNOW that 3dvision will die very soon. I was one the guys who claimed this fact on this forum, despite some people here who did not want to look at the true in the eyes. Fixing DX11 games without a little help from Nvidia is a pain, and now that famous modders are giving up, it will be even more difficult. BUT this is a simple step. Very soon, we'll have VR games which will be, according to the little part I've seen with my devkit Rift (and soon my DK2), a real gaming revolution (yes, more than stereo gaming). And, more important, it will be a massive and lasting change for everyone's entertainment. And in a little more distant future, quality stereoscopic screens without glasses will be on the market, and this time, people will buy and use it, there's no doubt about it. And then, we'll see a 3D stereo gaming "revival", with way more success and users than the actual 3Dvision. Simply because, like we all know here, 3D gaming is simply infinitely better than 2D gaming! So this is just a break, the end of a cycle for 3D gaming. Not the end of 3D gaming. This seems obvious, at least for me. PS: thanks to Nvidia and every modders who make my last 7 years of gaming absolutely great. Can't wait for the next step!

I really hope bo3b is right. It reminds me when Chiri migoto failed and Helix dissapeared after his Bioshock Infinite fix. All was lost, but at that point Flugan appeared and he offered to create a wrapper, then open source 3dmigoto appeared, and also the OpenGL wrapper, and 3d vision was back at full force. The thing is that 3d gaming is something you can't just forget and go back to 2d, so I hope those with the skills for making fixes will try to learn and we have new modders around. I'm a teacher so I can't do much, still I'm always open to a pay-per-fix model at a reasonable cost. And, like Laast explained, I think 3d gaming will survive, no matter if it's on 3d vision, tridef, virtual reality, or some other form.

I certainly thank all the ones involved with the Helix Mod project for releasing so many patches during the last two years, which were indeed "dark times", but I must admit I didn't really like the way Eqzitara decided to step out of the 3D Vision modding community.
As we had less and less support I questioned NVIDIA as to why we are having less support. They said in short, That I didn't understand and that developers are not likely to want to implement because it will not effect sales enough. The fact remains though that NVIDIA is not offering any incentive to developers. They blame them for the lack of support but they sponsor developers to support their technologies such as PHYSX, TXAA, ETC.
AS unfortunate as it sounds, it's true. Also due to lack of coverage from hardware and gaming portals, I don't think I've ever read a single line about 3D Vision sales (we could be 1000 or 500000, who knows?), but, based on my forum experiences, it's not like the 3D vision community has ever looked like an unstoppable horde. For example, there was this Watch_Dogs 3D vision request thread on their forums which was also well advertised here: last time I saw it (close to release date), it got 20 requests at best. The infamous Bioshock Infinite thread also revealed that there's not just "general apathy" over 3D, but something genuinely close to hatred. I and others were ridiculed by moderators!!! Once developers see stuff like this, it's pretty obvious that they can't take stereoscopic 3D seriously. As for devs more willing to use HBAO and TXAA (please leave hardware PHYSX alone, it has even less support than 3D Vision) for money, the thing is simple: that stuff doesn't require additional hardware and I guess adding filters requires less time than rewriting shaders. Also, 3D hasn't really been successful on consoles as well... to say the least.
Not surprisingly the modders of Helixmod have been treated poorly. As most know, we are not employee's of NVIDIA. Nor are we paid for our time/contributions. We do not do this for NVIDIA but to help the community often at great costs. All we ask is that NVIDIA supports 3D Vision ~ which they haven't. Not get in our way ~ which they've done several times. This may come as a shock to many people since we have been almost the sole method of support for 3D vision. NVIDIA has broken our patches on multiple occasions and frankly made our lives more difficult
Sorry, but what did you expect? Modding has been going on for long, it's universally praised, some developers release tools to do it and that's that. Many mods stopped working and had to be partially redone after a game or whatever was patched and many others were lost as well. It's how it works, like it or not. I'm pretty sure NVIDIA didn't break your patches on purpose: they're in the middle of a hopefully ongoing driver update process (in spite of what most users say...) and it happened. Also, they turned the new 3D Vision features into a "compatibility mode" upon community request and stated they are investigating the issue. Has your beloved AMD ever done anything like that or have they dropped 3D after less than two years and 5 or 6 officially supported games? Let's not even talk about other great stuff like TressFX.
NVIDIA has done many other things that upset all of us ranging from Negligence to False Advertising. To the point many games including ones we added support to are claimed to be 3D Vision supported. -They even made a special advertisement of a game that was patched by myself and is otherwise unplayable. -Depth buffer/Fake 3D is a cheap method to easily gain support of virtually every title. NVIDIA is giving these games high ratings to attract new users. -Since they are no longer contacting developers about support. Any game with depth buffer support and is sponsored by NVIDIA will be claimed as 3D Vision supported
I wouldn't call it "false advertising", if it's a problem with the actual developers: Assassin's Creed 3 was supposed to support 3D, but the amazing Ubisoft guys denied it at the last minute. As for Borderlands 2, Gearbox publicly claimed their title was 3D Vision Ready, they even released a patch for it. Once real results were seen, the game was correctly rated "not recommended". And now, the "Fake 3D". It seems I'm alone with this, but I think it's about time they're working on a method which potentially works with every game, regardless of developers and brand (AMD) affiliations. You guys keep insulting it, pretend it doesn't exist ("3D is dead", "it's the end of a cycle", "I'm switching to AMD for public protest") and even praise TriDef, a very similar technology which doesn't work with SLI and it's a paid application. We've seen this compatibility mode for three months and three drivers, so I suggest we gave it time and showed some support instead of saying "no", "f*** you", "I'm switching to AMD" (heck, do it if you want. You need no one's blessing!). I've tried Bioshock Infinite and, well, maybe my eyes are not as super developed as yours, maybe it's because of the settings I normally use, but I didn't find it that horrible or tragically flat. 3D vision is not dead as we speak, but it may be very soon if you show absolutely no support for it. Just don't blame NVIDIA when it happens. In the end, eqzitara and co. have all the rights and their reasons to stop doing what they do, but the rant was a bit inadequate. I praise, respect and thank all the modders who are not going to give up. I'm not good with graphics as I am with AI, but, if I have the time, I'll do my best to join you.

I wouldn't call it "false advertising"
I know I am picking on a little snip of your post but it was definately false advertising. The incided eqzitara is mentioning is where nvidia were using Borderlands 2 to promote 3D Vision. I raged about that for months. It was on 3D Vision's home page for months. 3D without eqzitara's fix was outright broken. Discusting behaviour from nvidia. False advertising.

False advertising.

Well, I wasn't planning on posting again but WOW. Seriously?
3D vision is not dead as we speak, but it may be very soon if you show absolutely no support for it. Its still up as I've stated. Its also rated supported on GEFORCE PAGE as well. They rated game PRIOR to release GOOD. The update to increase 3D vision support came around 6 MONTHS LATER. Where are you getting your facts from lol? B. There are games that MANY of us came to 3D vision because it claimed support this was due to them supporting it on "old 3d vision". I wasnt even talking about AC3 they put 3d vision supported next to titles that arent even out all the time. Mass Effect 3 was even one of them. There are at least 10 others. D.
