Passive 3D Displays vs. Active 3D Displays Will these make a difference with how 3D Vision will work

Nothing has changed since nvidia narrowed down the supported hardware and as eqzitara says you have to use other solutions. It's too bad because nvidia legacy drivers is practically the only way to be 100% without framelag (sort of, with ati, eyefinity and special tweaks within the iz3d-driver some games works successfully with eyefinity mode).

I also use passive dual-projectors. I agree it beats any active or passive TV out there.
Indeed at the moment the best way to run them is using and ATI card using the Eyefinity trick to avoid the 1-frame-lag. Consumer cards have a driver-limitation to prevent them from using "frame-lock", Eyefinity is the only work-around confirmed so far, but I believe it should also be possible using a Matrox Dual-Head2go (but has not been tested by anyone)
I recently bought the Tridef driver : they also support the Eyefinity trick, they work great and there is no need for a hidden configuration required like with iZ3D, With Tridef it works simply by using the standard side by side mode, however I noticed the FPS performance is lower than iZ3D's performance on most games I play.

Thank you for the information (i recall i've seen it somewhere else) and if it's ok i'll probably get back to you with some questions on how to make it work practically. My rig is old and i want to upgrade both the projectors and get a new computer. I'm heartly fed up with nvidias nowaday policy and will go ati with this upgrade.
"Funny" thing: I bought the 8800gtx with great stereoperformance in mind (all the early predecessors worked splendid in stereo!) and ironically the only ones who made it go stereo was kinddragon, iz3d and tridef, not nvidia...
I stopped buying hardware after that (had riva tnt, MX 440, 5900Ultra, 6800Ultra, 7900GTX, 8800GTX and then the suite stopped...).
I'm still hesitant to buy hardware and imo the trend looked far better a few years ago inspite all the talk of 3d today.
Sorry for getting myself started ranting but i'm disappointed.

I've had my 3D Vision system for about a year.

In the begining I used my 8800GTS 640Mb together with my sapphire HD5850.

My 8800 was not up to the task running high quality settings at 1080p resolution in 3D.

Upgraded to a GTX 560 Ti and got rid of my ATI card.

Built a new rig with a GTX 580 at which point I will stay for the time being.

Likay you appear to need to upgrade your high end gaming card pretty soon.

If keeping 7900GT you can run the old nvidia drivers there.

To simplify configuration it is probably simpler to pair it with an ATI card
as you need 3rd party driver to run a dual projector setup.

Your need to replace the projectors is clearly up to you.

I agree about nvidia. I really want a dual projector and may use that as my main set-up. I did not know that their are ways to work out the kinks with tridef software/amd card(thanks BlackSharkfr). No offense to people who love IZ3D, I am not willing to use it as my sole means. And just use my other projector for helix mod games/nvidia 3d vision ready games.
The only real good thing nvidia has going for it is good Frames per Second and some developer support. Tridef is the better software but is not optimized well for nvidia(fps on amd rigs dont seem too high either). The software is so amazing though and works out of box much better then 3d vision for most games. Basically if a developer says yeah we can do that, 3d vision will be better. If not.. go with tridef.
The sad thing is nvidia probably spends so much more $ on paying their team then tridef makes..Not only do they release profiles that do nothing. They release them for games helix fixed and break them = /

As for Passive vs 3Dvision I have tried the Acer, Asus 27, then 23-24" Asus, Benq, Viewsonice blah blah blah. All had some kind of black light bleed. Black like bleed in which playing a movie or game you see the light on the sides on any black. I just got through playing with passive. I thought I would give AOC a try for fun and though it was a TN monitor it had no black like bleed at all. Yet there is a HUGE difference between Active and Passive. I could sit back a ways and 3d looked great yet on my 3d Vision.. wow sharper. This was in games yet movies can't tell. Though for ME 3D vision is better I just don't see it going much farther. For less then $250 you can get everything you need for 3D, passive and take off. Now if you dont have a NV card its going to cost you. Just the 3d 22-24" 3D vision monitor cost way to much. For the price I am so shocked no one speaks up. The black light bleed alone should NEVER be this bad and for $450-700.

Now LG is coming out with a 27" IPS passive monitor. Passive is just way to easy and you can ware the glasses for ever. And as for passive having less ghosting, lol so not true. Each game is different. Some 3D vision games had less and the same on passive. I do like Tridef better. Games like Skyrim Tridef was showing things in 3D that never happen in Nvidia. Anyways this is just my 2cents. I am an expert in my own world.. haha

Please, can someone tell me a game that looks better with Tridef compared to 3D Vision, cause all games I've tried in SBS (tridef mode) looked like **** compared to 3D Vision (frame sequential mode).

I read that Call of Duty - MW3 looked much better with Tridef, so I give it a try and got really disapointed with the results I got. The Tridef 3D looked fake in this game, the resolution looked horrible, lot of edges and it just looked worse, much worse compared to Nvidia's 3D Vision. Also, both 3D Vision and Tridef have the 2D crosshair issue with this game, so I don't understand how some folks said that MW3 looked better with Tridef compared to 3D Vision, I really don't get that? If Tridef at least had a 3D crosshair for this game, than it could make a difference, but graphics would still look inferior compared to 3D Vision.

I've also tried Tridef with GTA IV which also looked much worse compared to 3D Vision. Mafia 2, despite having convergence unlocked using Tridef it also looked horrible compared to 3D Vision, the resolution and graphics looked blured and ugly.

I don't understand how Tridef can look better than 3D Vision, since it only works in SBS (squished resolution) vs 3D Vision's FS (full resolution). Maybe Tridef is a good deal if you have an ATI card and can benefit from Frame Sequential mode, which is much superior 3D mode compared to SBS.

Tridef is no match for 3D Vision. Maybe there are some games that look better with Tridef, but I must find one and see for myself, the ones I have tried so far with Tridef, Left 4 Dead 2, MW2, MW3, BF3, Batman, GTV IV and Mafia 2 looked inferior to 3D Vision in many ways.

I have a Samsung S27A950D monitor that comes with a full Tridef license and I've tried it and have already removed it, cause I will keep using 3D Vision as it looks so much better for the games I play and also supports the best games out there. 3D Vision is the best 3D solution for gaming, period.

As for Passive vs Active, flickering is no longer an issue with you own a Samsung 2011 monitor or TV that uses bluetooth RF glasses. I've never dealt with flicker after I bought my Samsung S27A950D and the 3D glasses that came with this monitor are by far the best and most confortable I've ever worn. The 3D picture is 2x as brighter leading to less ghosting/crosstak issues compared to my old Alienware Aw2310 + 3D Vision glasses, but the best part is that Samsung bluetooth glasses really rock, they never flicker, never. You would never get a passive solution after you try an active solution with the RIGHT glasses. The problem are these old IR glasses suitable for annoying flickering...

I also onw a 2010 Samsung C7000 3D Plasma TV which I love, but unfortanately it came with IR 3D glasses and I am aware how disturbing and annoying flicker can be, as I deal with this everytime I play a game or watch a movie during heavy action scenes. If my TV worked with RF glasses instead, things would be completely different.

Shutterglasses always flickers... It's ehrm.. in their nature, bluetooth or not. /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
The only way to make flickering less noticeable is increasing the shutterfrequency or lower the brightness of the screen.
About tridef it almost sounds like you have virtual 3d activated and the result is very similar to watching a crap movieconversion.

So, why I have been using my S27A950D with Samsung bluetooth glasses (rock solid link) + 3D Vision with many games for these last 2 months and didn't have a single flicker issues, why??? I've played BF3 and Batman for hours and days and the Sammy BT glasses never flicked once.
Have you tried it or you just assuming they flicker???

Also, saying that passive solution has less ghosting compared to active is a complete joke. Maybe a projector or DLP TV, but never the LG Cinema passive TV or LG passive monitor solutions. I Like the LG Cinema Passive solution, but I can see those tiny interleaved lines and they bother me, the picture isn't sharp enough compared to my 2010 3D Samsung Active Plasma TV. I was about 3 metters behing the LG TV in a store and I could see the lines, and the ghosting wasn't bad, but it was there depending on the scene.

It's not Tridef virtual 3D believe me, I've tried that and I won't even comment about as how hideous it looked. I mean the read Tridef 3D SBS mode is just not comparable with 3D Vision's frame sequential mode, not even close, at least the games I've described above and played.

You can't compare tridefs sbs to 3dvisions 1080p frame sequential, there 2 different formats, one being much better than the other as it is full 1080p.
Sbs is a poor way to 3d compared to Page flipping/frame sequential.

I was exploring nvidia inspector profiles and saw this.
stereo display mode - WKS_API_STEREO_MODE_STEREO_MIRROR
which is
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2F3dvision-blog.com%2Fforum%2Fviewtopic.php%3Ff%3D24%26t%3D716&ei=ij5yT5uiI8fz0gHp0YC1AQ&usg=AFQjCNEReiXjolv8eB-RXWJr4Ck8pT0OAg&sig2=PICBEQv48f92L_HGdtvPgA
One screen overlaps the other and using polarized glasses they see the image. I am curious if this could be used to allow dual projectors to work. Perhaps its farfetched, thought its worth a shot. You have to open the inspector for (whatever game) then change profile to the setting above then launch said game.

According to the forum post you linked it has been removed from the drivers.

Not sure if it's true but I assume that even if it's gone some remnants might be left in the drivers showing that it was previously there.

A passive setup with dual projectors and silver screen could probably be massive.

I wonder how hard it is to calibrate to align the 1080p pixels even though due to 3D it probably doesn't have to be perfectly aligned.

I could not consider it replacing a PC Monitor so I would probably compare it to using a 3DTV but with bigger size and the need for dark viewing room.

The compability appears to be tricky but not impossible. Using 3D Vision is out of the question.

At my standard viewing distance to my monitor of about 45cm I currently use the old 23,6 inch BENQ.

Using anythign significantly larger than 27" at that distance does not seem feasable.

As I have no problem seeing individual pixels I would probably be annoyed if I every try a passive monitor.

Even with the LG 3DTV trick of actually showing all the pixels of the original 3D image but not at the same time the polarizing raster is fixed and each eye will see the black lines at all times.

LG might claim full HD 3D but it is IMO from my assumptions not that good when sitting very close to the screen.

When watching my 3D photographs using only one eye I would imagine that a passive monitor would give s really bad 2D experience. Constant black lines all over the picture and perhaps even and odd scanlines flickering back and forth.

Active displays have their issues as well but at least they can show a full HD 2D image to a single eye.

Thanks to everybody using my assembler it warms my heart.
To have a critical piece of code that everyone can enjoy!
What more can you ask for?

You can't compare tridefs sbs to 3dvisions 1080p frame sequential, there 2 different formats, one being much better than the other as it is full 1080p.
Sbs is a poor way to 3d compared to Page flipping/frame sequential.

I know that Mocca, I am very aware about the differences between these 2 3D modes, SBS vs FS. That's why I can't see how Tridef would look any better than 3D Vision in any game if it only works in SBS mode if you have Nvidia card. 3D Vision will always look superior to Tridef if you have a Nvidia card, that's what I thought.

It looks like we are using the term "flicker" for different phenomenon.
From what you write, I understand you use it to describe the glasses freezing when there is a loss of signal between the display and the glasses. It lasts a fraction of a second and then the glasses resume operating normally again.

We use it to describe the strobing effect that occurs all the time when using a sequential based 3D display, even at 120Hz. It doesn't affect everybody the same way. Some people don't see it at all, most people feel it as a slight eyestrain but bear with it easily, rarely some people are so disturbed by it that they can't watch the picture at all.
I haven't tested Samsung's 2011 displays but I have felt it on every single sequential display I have ever seen :
active shutter 3DTVs and desktop monitors @120Hz as well as both XPAND active shutter and RealD cinema @ 144Hz. I can bear with it for a 2Hrs movie but after that my eyes feel very tired which does not happen on passive displays (with simultaneous presentation in both eyes).
