graphics card upgrade for vg278h
hey,
atm i have a nvidia 560ti which is great for 2d on my asus vg278h, however is lagging a bit when 3d is activated for games like skyrim. on swtor and batman aa the framerate has dropped from 60/70 to 30/40 which is playable but would like a smooth gameplay.

*also for a game with crappy graphics like mount and blade, when 3d is on it lags like hell yet batman is nearly fine.. whats that about??

should i get another 560ti and run in SLI mode? (also is SLI ok in games and 3d? im not much of a techie but keep hearing about SLI problems?)

or get a gtx 580? this would obvi cost more but will it support the 27" in 3d smoothly in high rez?

advice would be greatly appreciated

cheers!

2 560ti SLI mode is faster than a single GTX580 3GB according to Tom's Hardware. Would be cheaper too. I personally went from 2 GTS450 SLI to a single GTX580 3GB just because I'm tired of dealing with SLI optimization issues. Most games work with SLI, or else Nvidia releases drivers with an SLI profile for the game eventually, but it's true that having a single video card does eliminate the possibility of complications. I think either choice you listed is probably a good one, but are you talking about the 1GB version of the 580, or the 3GB version? I don't think you would be gaining a whole lot if you only bought the regular 1GB version of the 580, but a 3GB will set you back $500 - $600, so, pick your poison.

The SLI 560Ti is OK. The 580 at this time is a bad idea as it is approaching its end-life and the new 28nm GPUs are about to arrive. Sure NVIDIA says that the high-ends are for late 2012, but it wouldn't say otherwise as it would hurt its holiday sales. With AMD releasing its own early, NVIDIA will have to follow.

I suggest you get an EVGA one, because you'll have the option of a 90-day step up upgrade to a next gen NVIDIA by late Q1

Yep as mentioned a 2nd 560 Ti will scale amazingly well with 3D Vision and get you closer to 60FPS per eye in games that struggled on your single card. Also, 2x560 Ti is faster than a single GTX 580. Generally Nvidia is excellent with SLI support, but in the rare case they don't have an SLI profile available, you can tweak and make your own using tools like Nvidia Inspector or GeForce SLI Profile tool.

I went from a sli setup to the single most powerful single i could, i hated a lot of the problems with SLI, even though i had 60 fps in most games it never felt like it a lot of the time, just occasional judder a that i found hugely annoying, gaming in 60 fps with a single gpu does feel a much smoother experince in general.

Elias24 is right as well though, the most powerful nvidia gpu is nearing the end of its lifespan, really depends on the type of money you have to spend and wheter you have the patience to wait for the 600 series and go for the fastest then which will probably be very simiar to the price just now for the 580.

Obviously I'm a little biased here since I just recently plunked down some major cash on a GTX580, but it doesn't make sense to me to wait for months on whatever Nvidia is coming out with next. Why deprive yourself of that time that you could enjoy gaming in 3D? And as for the GTX580 nearing its lifespan... well,... there's an easy cure for that - when it starts lagging on the latest and greatest games just buy another one and SLI them! That's my plan.

thanks for the replies guys, very helpful!

ok plan is, to get another 560ti and run in SLI. then wait for the next gen cards to come out. as stated no point in getting a 580 for £400 and the best next gen one comes out and is near enough the same price.

i had a look at this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo9uyEi7tGM and he states that the SLI 560 is good but as dsk1210 said the average fps wasnt satisfying but still better then a single 560ti of course. small price to pay for a few months.

thanks again!
