HELP! Cannot get 3DVision glasses to work!
After installing the drivers, it returns an error message saying "StereoCPLAPI returned invalid refresh rate (80) from StereoLauncer->getDefaultModeInfo."

Everything is set up properly with my CRT monitor. It's set at 1440x900 @ 120 Hz. I even tried other resolutions like 1600x1000 @ 110Hz (the recommended refresh rate) and also 1680x1050 @ 100Hz. The same error message keeps on popping up whenever I try to enable Stereo 3D or click on the setup wizard. I'm running Vista x64 with the latest drivers.. all of the system requirements are met. How can I fix this refresh rate error if my Sony GDM-FW900 is already set at 120Hz?

Just a long shot here, but try RivaTuner to set these rates if you haven't tried it yet, it sounds like the monitor rates weren't seen by the S3D driver for some reason. RivaTuner works for me on Vista 32, at least got me thru the setup wizard.

Yep, tried that, but no success.. Thanks for the reply.

I even uninstalled 181.22 Forceware and went back to 181.20 WHQL drivers combo from Nvidia's download site--- still a no-go. Perhaps it's a bug in current Vista64 Nvidia drivers? I'm running Athlon64 X2 with 2GB of RAM and 8800GTX, 300GB of free disk space, etc.. and Vista is updated with SP1 and all of the latest Window updates. I even tried RefreshLock, which still works in Vista, but it still did not make the S3D driver recognize the refresh rate.

Hmm, do you also have a CRT monitor? Did you have to set it to a 100+ refresh rate first before you could enter the setup wizard? Was RivaTuner's injection method the only way you got it to work?

Yes my setup is 3D Vision + CRT, Vista SP1 32 bit though.

Here are the steps I used:

- RivaTuner to change refresh rate for the CRT, only needed once.
- Change CRT to the resolution and refresh rate you want for the desktop. (I selected 120Hz, 1152x864?), only needed once.
- Run Setup Wizard

That's it.

However from other users on MTBS3D forum, you don't have to set it at 100+ Hz before doing the Wizard setup, but you have to guess what it prompts with regard to left and right images during the setup. Check out this thread:

Bo_Fox you are not the only one. I too am struggling to get nVidia's 3d vision glasses to work on my FW900/vistax86 box.

Just got my glasses yesterday. Since then I've been fighting with that damn wizard that refuses to run. "StereoCPLAPI returned invalid refresh rate (80) from StereoLauncher->getDefaultModeInfo." every single time I try to run the wizard.

I guess what pisses me off most about this whole ordeal is that I know the glasses will work fine but since I get this lovely little software error (probably because using a crt for these glasses was an afterthought) I can't.

I just got mine working today. What I did was dig out an old crt from my closet (Dell P1110) and ran the wizard on that. Everything went fine, no error messages. Now with s3d enabled I turned off the computer, reconnected my FW900 and s3d stayed enabled and the demonstration disk worked. :)

I would like to know if this is an isolated problem with the FW900. Did anyone manage to run the wizard with the FW900 and not run into that dreaded error?

All right, thanks for sharing! I wish I had another CRT lying around like you. I've tried 2 newer versions of S3D drivers released last week, and they still return the same refresh error. Hmm, perhaps I should knock on my neighbor's homes and find one who has a CRT I could borrow just to solve this ridiculous problem. Nvidia, please make sure it works with the FW900 with the next drivers, and I'll be making positive reviews on Geforce 3D Vision if it's fixed.

Also, the 181.20 and newer Forceware drivers do not allow me to set custom resolutions anymore (the error says that the testing has failed, but my FW900 was displaying the "test" resolution perfectly fine until I clicked "ok" on the error message).

Hi

I suspect whats going wrong is your FW900 doesnt have a plug and play mode or a driver to load to properly report it can support high refresh rates. Is that correct?

Vista already comes with drivers for the GDM-FW900, as all of Nvidia's Forceware drivers can properly recognize the monitor, providing the pre-supported resolutions. 2304x1440 @ 79 Hz is already present as the highest resolution (I did not even have to check the box for "Allow modes not exposed by the display"). The lowest resolution, 800x600, offers refresh choices from 56 Hz up to 150 Hz. 960x600 also offers up to 150 Hz. But there's one strange thing that appears to be broken with the drivers ever since 3DVision was publicly released--I can no longer add custom resolutions/refresh rates in 180.20 and above Forceware versions. It will always return an error message saying "Custom mode test failed", even though my monitor is correctly displaying the test resolution, as it was always capable of such resolution/refresh in the previous drivers. Thanks for your concern, by the way.

Hi

Thanks for the info, we are going to have to look at each issue separately.

Try this to start with. Go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and enable stereoscopic 3D. Then, launch the test application and select 800x600 and at least 100 Hz or higher. I would like to know if that works to enable stereoscopic 3d.

this custom fail mode happens to me too if i try to change the refresh to 110 or 120 Hz at 1600x1200 (i have do to it with riva tuner)

i can run the wizard but the problem is it says it does not detect a 3D rdy screen - after that i do the medical test etc..etc..but i don't get an option asking if there is any flickering and fixing a refresh rate. Can you guys get access to this?

Also what cable are you guys using to connect to your crt?

Yep, been there done that. I cannot even enable stereoscopic 3D after setting the desktop resolution to 800x600 @ 100+ Hz. Whenever I click on the check box for "Enable stereoscopic 3D", a pop-up message says "StereoCPLAPI returned invalid refresh rate (80) from StereoLauncher->getDefaultModeInfo." It would not allow a check to be placed in the check box.

I've tried connecting the monitor via 5BNC instead of ordinary VGA cable, and it still did not solve the problem. Even making sure the monitor is not identified by Windows Vista by disabling one of the VGA pins did not work either.

Reinstalling windows is not a viable option for me--all it should take is some registry cleaning or something like that if reinstalling windows solves the problem. Let's keep it up guys.. hopefully it'd be solved here. I cannot even use anaglyph red/blue glasses like I could with previous driver versions (174.76 S-3D and 177.83 S-3D a few months ago).

I used to get this once or twice when first playing around with different version of the 3D Vision driver. Had to uninstall and used "driver sweeper" to cleanup before reinstalling the proper drivers. You might have some luck trying that route.

I have the same problem with the error when trying to start the wizard. Tried Rivatuner refresh force, 3 CRTs, and newer (1.04) drivers and eventually got it working.

Vista64
C2D
4 GB ram
GTX280
GDM-FW900 (Sony 24" CRT)

Wizard would not start with 1.00 or 1.04 drivers on either my GCM FW900 or and old 15" Dell CRT.
Wizard did start with 1.04 drivers and Sony 21" CRT.
Driver did not detect 3D compatable monitor. I picked the CRT option anyway.
Octagon/triangle test did not work until I used Rivatuner to force 100Hz refresh at all low resolutions. (The rediculously low resolution of the wizard may be a source of many people's problems. It does not appear to run at the desktop resolution. Also, the new display driver does not enable as many supported res/refresh combos as the 178s for some reason. I had to make a buch of custom ones.)
The greyscale 'square in square' test image looked great, but I could not check "next". It was greyed out for some reason. Esc did not work. Eventually I got past that part by finding the registry keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D]
StereoDefaultOn 0 -> 1
StereoVisionConfirmed 0 -> 1

This allowed me to tick the "enable 3D stereo" in the driver and re-install my good monitor. If I tried the wizard again, I still could not get past the Square 3D image test and had to reset the registry again. Everything seems to be working fine now, but what a pain. Another Saturday wasted.....
