So, my LG 55LM6700 comes in tomorrow and I was debating or not to purchase 3d Play for my HTPC.
(movies only)
I have been reading mixed reviews in combination with a Passive set up. Anyone able to point me in the rite direction for a passive (real D) review or give me a quick personalized review of this combination?
Also, the LM series offers it;s own conversion software with depth adjustment on the HDTV which has been getting great reviews. Will this conflict with 3dPlay? Should I just keep my HTPC the way it is and utilize LG's software for movies or should give my lil' HTPC a gpu upgrade and buy 3d Play?
Someone set my mind at ease here lol :P

3DTV Play is a stereoscopic gaming middleware offered by Nvidia.
For stereoscopic video playback you want something else.
Arcsoft, Cyberlink or Corel for 3D Blu-ray and/or file playback.
Or stereoscopic player for file playback. (there are a few others too)
Nvidia does offer 3D Vision player with 3DTV Play, so you it might work for you depending on your needs.(it's licensed from steroscopic player by Nvidia).

If you mean Real D Passive like in the theater, that's Dual Projector technology using a silverscreen for polarization. Lenses in front of each projector polarize the light in a circular manner. Like in these videos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVTGCQoPR1E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPRnjsfYM1g&feature=c4-overview&list=UU42G1z_FJpVsYjuuPuhT4Yw
Passive TVs use a film pattern retarder and the polarized light is not rotated it's linear, so if you tilt your head sideways the ghosting increases and turns purple.

It produces very good 3D, especially for movies. Gaming can be hit or miss due to lag.

What LG has to say:
Awesome news... your favorite 2D content can join in on the excitement of 3D. LG's innovative 2D to 3D feature can turn anything from sports to cinema classics into larger-than-life 3D with the push of a button on your Magic Remote. And with more and more content for the entire family available in 3D, there's no end to the viewing selections!LG Cinema 3D offers a wide horizontal viewing angle to enjoy a full-immersive 3D experience virtually anywhere you sit. There's no need to squeeze together in front of the TV. LG's generous angle optimum viewing lets you share the fun with all of your friends.
So if my movie collection is "side by side" will this play it natively or do I need 3rd party software?
See the problem is, I don't have the TV yet... hopefully will arrive today. But I'm trying to gather up a small movie collection to show my wife that is was worth the $$$. ;)
And how does this work?(in case my kids decide to play in 3d on the xbox360)
TWO-PLAYER GAMES ON THE SAME SCREEN
Now two-player split screen gaming is on the full screen on the same TV with LG's Dual Play* technology. While wearing the special light-weight and battery-free glasses, each player is only able to see his unique point-of-view (in 2D) and across the entire TV screen without being able to see the opponent’s. No more sharing the TV screen real-estate and no more cheating by peeking at each other’s screens while you battle it out in 2-player games such as Call of Duty®: Black Ops II. Dual Play works with most current gaming systems or even older consoles as long as it is a split-screen game. Dual Play uses two pairs of special glasses F310DP sold separately in a bundle.
The native format is line interleaved.
Any other format that you input will be converterted to interlaced by the TV. Except Sensio 3D, which is seldom used but supported on Vizio 3D HDTVs.
SONY calls it SimulView, there are several different names for the technology.

LG has one of the better 2D-3D conversions that I've used.
Of course it's no good for gaming, but it was great for a 3D Desktop as well as some movies.
Finding Nemo on DVD looked great converted and interpolated.
They way my Vizio passive 3dtv works with movies: Pretty much any (ripped) 3d movie can be played through any video player ex. Windows medea player, or VLC etc. side by side, over under, interlaced. All I do is select, on my tv, which format the movie is in, and the tv does the rest! If you have blu-ray's, you'll of course need a 3d blu-ray drive and program like cyberlink, to play them, or a standalone 3d blu ray player (which i recommend for family viewing anyhow). But, the tv's functionality stays the same. You select the format, and boom.. 3d. Same with game consoles with games that support 3d.
Pretty sure that the LG tv functions in a similar way.
My family and I watch a ton of 3d movies, and I have two 3d vision pc's for me and my boys to play 3d games on. For family 3d blu-ray viewing, and console 3d gaming, my PS3 has been a godsend. Maybe consider grabbing one of those as well. :)

Ok GREAT, sounds simple enough.
So bottom line...if I'm using this just for .mkv/MP4 movies, I do not have to worry about installing
any 3rd party software as the TV's encoder will work just fine.

Yep. Oh, looks like i forgot to mention, your media player of choice must be in fullscreen, or the tv might get confused. ;) Anyway, with enough experimentation, and general usage, you'll easily be watching all kinds of 3d shit on the internet... youtube 3d fullscreen works as well, no special drivers, just your 3dtv.

I know I should probably be posting this on another forum since Im not using 3dPlay rite now... but thought I'd keep you guys updated ;)
I either need a high volume USB pen drive or a cheap external HDD.
I got my LG 3DTV yesterday (Absolutely incredible btw) and found out that it has it's own MP4/MKV decoder built in... So I don't have to buy f***ing 3D blu-ray's since my buddies and I all share our collections. (You'd have to at $40 per 3D movie). With LG's 3D VOD ( video on demand) serice I can purchase 3D movies for as little as $8 which is nice, but again I must have a HDD ran to it in order to DL.
But each 3D movie is between 2Gb-5Gb. I have a couple 8GB USB pen's but would love to have a huge storage so I don't have to keep erasing the movie every time I wanna watch a new one. We (the family) watched OZ: The Great and Powerful last night and the quality was "better" than it was at the theater(mostly due to the Tru-motion tech.).
Oh...and the TV's Mpeg decoder is directly linked to a USB 3.0 input.
I "could" stream it wirelessly via NAS... but from what I'm reading 3D requires ALOT of bandwidth
and I would hate the youtube type occasional freeze while I'm into a movie.
So I'm thinking....
Would you buy a 32Gb USB stick for $27.99... or a 320Gb refurbed 2.5" External HDD for $39.97
The pen drive is USB 3.0 and the ext. HDD is 2.0.
With 32Gb I could put about 10 3D movies onto it;
so the 320Gb it's more like 100 movies.
For those wondering:
The 2-D to 3-D conversion is "O.K." The picture is clear without any signs of ghosting and you can def. tell you are watching something in 3D. However it really lacks the depth a true 3D encoded video would have. IT was pretty cool though, watch House at 2am in 3D. (Especially when he was tossing his ball at the glass wall between his office and the consult room.)
The built in 2D-3D converter is the reason I chose the smaller (55")LG over the lager (60")Vizeo at the same price point.
Another Question...
The "component" input on the rear uses what "looks" to be like an old S-video port. The book shows a "pig-tail" with the s-vid type connector going into the TV and 5x rca type connectors coming out. Anyone know what this is called? I "THINK" I've seen something like this before on the newer Direct-TV receivers. The TV did not come with them so I have to look elsewhere for purchasing a pair of them. How "Good" is the quality? I only need them for the Xbox 360 and DVR.

HDD is 2.0.
With 32Gb I could put about 10 3D movies onto it;
so the 320Gb it's more like 100 movies.
