3D vision on ATI GPU as main but secondary GTX295
  1 / 2
Hey there,

I want to purchase a 5970 but I dont want to miss my 3D vision as I know it does not support ATI gpus. Seeing as the GTX 480s heat and powerconsumption is through the roof and it cost the same as a dual Ati gpu and does not overclock well I will be wanting to go ati on this. However I want to still use 3D vision so is it possible to leave my GTX295 in as a secondary gpu allowing me to use 3D vision?

Thanks for your time guys.

Funny question but .. unfortunately no, only one graphics card driver allowed in operating system, sorry.

IMO power consumption is comparable between the two cards and GTX 480 offers much more for you, if you like 3D Vision, not to forget PhysX of course. Perhaps wait for the announced Fermis with alternative coolers/fans, which will run quieter.

Do you really want to go back to 2D flatness for the sake of a few more frames per second?

Actually you can install 2 different GPU drivers and you can get Physx to work on ATI I can show you proof if you like. its very easy And no I do not want to go back to 2D but I need a new GPU because my 295 cant handle 3D vision on highest settings in For example Just cause 2.

Except under Win 7 which will allow the use of two different display drivers at once.

I am currious as to if it will work also. But i would tend to think that the hack that has to be used to enable Physx on and ATI chipset may disrupt the 3D vision. But hey I may be wrong, sure wont be the first time.

Yes, but then you're using in this case a Geforce as PhysX driver only, not as graphics driver. You cannot use ATI graphics driver and NVIDIA graphics driver at the same time.
I think a fermi will still be a upgrade over a 295GTX in several ways. And you can still double the performance by going SLI if necessary.

Yes you can. I had a 5750 running F@H on the same rig as 2 GTX 295's all three GPUs where rendering a desktop monitor. So the ATI display driver and nvidia display driver will work at the same time.

ATI will very soon be supporting 120hz displays and OEM shutter glasses, so if you like
ATI/AMD I'd suggest waiting for that.. you might as well get that 5970, and sell ur 295 :P

just get the 480 man.... its a great card and its cheaper than the 5790. or go for the sli 480 at 250$ more than a single 5790 and you will have the fastest set up period.

who cares how much power it uses! its the fastest single gpu card! heat? why does that really matter when your fraggin in 3d? i just dont understand these complaints. it not any louder than your 295.

or you can always try the iz3d setup- but its only dx9 and no sli- no shutterglass- ect and totally wont work with your 3dvision.

I have not bought a 5970 yet because I want to keep 3D vision support so im still deciding if it should be 480 or 5970. Also although Ati is coming out with 3D support I will need to buy another pair of shutter glasses and their software will be wonky for some time like nvidia had lots of ghosting in games at the beginngin and other such problems.

Stick with your 295. wait until the 480 matures, maybe a revision that doesn't waste that much power and produce that much heat.
remember Fermi is made as a GPGPU and a GPU is only a secondary addition. So we are paying for features we may never use.

Why would you say that?

The 480 in SLI obliterates, esp in games with CUDA.
