So I have been trying to research this for the past few weeks before taking the plunge..

Didnt find any real concrete information - but what I had seemed solid enough..

SO I go and get a brand new pc + nvidia video card = $800
Buy the nvidia 3d vision kit + extra glasses = $400

Buy a new tv (not that I needed one but I wanted the 3d support) = $1100

get it all setup.. cant watch any dvds in 3d.. videos that are downloaded crash.

NOW how are all these sites boasting that they can turn your whole dvd library into 3d experiance - yet no one on the net has posted that its all bull..

am I doing something wrong? t3d media has made it clear that they are using nvidia hardware - yet amazingly enough - there is no where on nvidias website that helps declear that movies can actually be watched in 3d (at least not current movies)

and when I try to use the nvidia 3d video player to play DVD - it keeps giving me an error that no audio decoder has been choosen - no matter HOW many times I pick one out of the list..

anyone have any thoughts on this.. im dying to know how Im going to explain the $2300 in wasted hardware to my wife other then Im retarded

thanks!

I agree, you are retarded. You said yourself "Didnt find any real concrete information " and "there is no where on nvidias website that helps declear that movies can actually be watched in 3d". So what exactly was the problem. Dont get me wrong I spent about $1200 myself on the 3d setup, but I also did enough research to understand what 3dvision does and does not do.

I guess if you aren't a gamer it seems like some wasted money. You can't just convert regular DVD movies to 3d as they simply don't have any depth information included. You can find certain dvd that will work with 3d vision but there aren't that many. You have to get dvds that are "field sequential" type I believe.

Seriously though, I don't think 3d vision is really worth it for anyone that doesn't plan on doing a significant amount of gaming in 3d stereo.

there is software out there that tries to convert dvd's into 3d......but because the information isn't present to correctly separate the left and right images, it will never look as good as a film that has been SHOT in 3d, or a game that can be rendered live in 3d.

http://www.ddd.com/product/products.html

you can try that as a starting point......but as i said, don't expect it to work miracles, none of your dvd's will look that amazing using this software, but you might get some small amount of success with some?

Get into 3D Gaming! Its really where its at anyways. By the way, welcome to the hellish world of 3D with Nvidia. Prepare to suffer. You should be able to put all that equipment to good use soon enuff, hopefully. Im sure Nvidia will work with Sony PS3 when it becomes 3D-ized. Anyways, good luck with the wife. I have been having to talk my wife into letting me spend tons of money on this too! (Im on my 3rd projector, and even the one I have NOW isnt properly supported!)

wow...LOL... I actually read that whole post because it was so entertaining the whole way. haha. How much research did you actually do, one sentence? Too funny. I spent $3500 and don't regret it in the slightest. /sorcerer.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sorcerer:' />

Sorry but I have to agree with the others. Any decent, not even in depth, research would have been enough to avoid making a mistake here.

You can make Your own 3D videos and 3D pictures with 2 cameras.
There is a lack of "official" 3D movies, the 3D movies You can watch in 3D theaters is just not available (for some strange reason...). Allthough there are 3D video festivals, the content is unavailable to us mortals. Go figure?
There are individuals making 3D videos and/or converting and selling these. I've listed some links (like http://underground3dmovies.com/) here: http://www.3d.wep.dk/3dgallery.html

If You are having trouble with Nvidia 3D player then maybe try Stereoscopic Player from http://3dtv.at/Index_en.aspx
(and Windows Media Player 11 codec or something...)

I don't know anything about the DDD conversion (2D to 3D) program. I do know that if a movie company converts 2D to 3D it is done frame by frame creating a grid so it is a timeconsuming process.

Well I can't add much else to what everyone said. lol. I personally only spent $200 on the glasses (and snagged a free CRT) to make sure I liked it before spending anymore cash. I'm going to be getting the 6210 Viewsonic projector ($479), which is still well under a grand. I'm a gamer tho. :\

I would say if you are not really into trying 3d gaming or already into 3d content, dont bother spending so much money. If you dont want to do gaming in 3d, start researching the still and 3d places you can find. Right now, youtube 3d exists with the yt3d tags. There are more and more good HD 3d videos going up there every day. Flicker has several groups dedicated to 3d photography, which has been around since the mid 1800s actually. You can also take your own 3d pictures and video with new cameras like the Fuji 3d camera or build a fairly cheap 3d "stereo data maker" rig.

The one thing that has always been a joke is converting a 2d movie into 3d, come on. That would require artificial intelligence and we arent driving flying cars yet. There is no magic that can figure out exactly how a scene is supposed to look in 3d, they can guess, but it just isnt like the real thing.

Well all in all.. Thanks :) I guess a few postings could have solved a lot.. I guess my deal is how or why companies boast this 3D movie experiance and yet no one has fully defunct thier stuff.

I figured since I dropped the coin.. I would start playing PC games and check it out.. and I must say.. DAAMMN... I beat Batman Arkham Asylum probably 4 or 5 times on my xbox already and now going through it on the PC.. Halo 2 on the PC needs some work - I need to figure out if its the game or the settings - the extra ghosted second weapon while only carring one bothers my eyes with the way it flickers on and off the screen.

Assassins Creed doesnt do much for me.. I need to adjust the 3D settings - the game barely was worth a second run through on the xbox - let alone a run through on the PC - might get the sequal - hopefully the story line will be good.

Call of Duty MW2 - WOW.. want to work on the settings and depth on that too.. but wow.. its awesome.. the game needs controller support - but not 3D related.

Star Wars force unleashed sith editon - tried it once.. some ghosting issues there as well as it crashed on me after the end of the first level - havent spent time to go back to it yet.

Im concerned about the underground movies looks like the guy is rendering them himself - which isnt a bad thing.. just doesnt look trust worthy.. or like it would be quality.

Are there any studio released steroscopics motion pictures out there.. Im not really feeling the Hannah Montana sorry.. Jaws 3D would probably be cool.. its old as all hell but a classic to some I guess.

Shame Nvidia cant get studio support for some of the major motion pictures like newer 3D movies to release exclusive titles to support 3d vision directly through them.. it would cost more.. but hell I would pay the money for a high quality release of a 3D movie that isnt over 20 years old...

All and all since I have been playing with it.. the setup is off the hook for gaming.. just a shame my wife cant enjoy it more with me.. I need to do some research in the HDTV forums for a optimization disc something that will help me with the image colors - the defaults on this tv are ASS.. watched a x264 on the system the other night and it was disgustingly bad.. but that is not her nor there..

I am really happy with the setup though.. gaming on it is truly fantastic..

Thanks for all the comments.

Is there any 3D Blueray DVD yet? What is the format? Is this something we can (or will be able to) play with 'Stereoscopic Player' ?
