Microsoft HoloLens
What do you guys think of Microsoft HoloLens? I know it's not VR but still impressive, and it's coming out this year like Ocultus Rift. You think it can help OR or will still it spotlight?

Right now, HoloLens is nothing more than a ticket for the hype train for MS to catch up with other companies like Sony or Facebook/Oculus. The tech behind it is much more complicated than VR devices, so the gadget will not live up to their promises in the foreseeable future. Let's talk about it again in 5 years.

I feel like AR has better/more real-world applications than it does gaming applications, not that it can't do some neat things as far as gaming goes, it's just to me VR/3D have much more of an impact on gaming. Now if you could mix AR with 3D glasses/Monitor, maybe you could add that element of things popping out of the screen's 'culling' zone(edges of the screen) and into your living room ... like in Skyrim when the dragon flambes your arse, the flames could come out around the edges of the screen instead of being cutoff.

Take in consideration that they want to use it as a selling point for Xbox, so you never know what they will think of. I wonder what resolution HoloLens have.

It won't be good for gaming, for many reasons. And I don't even think it will be that amazing besides gaming. I think VR will be much better. AR will be useful some day, but not now, and especially not from Microsoft. This hype train is going to crash at the same wall that stopped the dreams that appeared after first Wii presentation. Or first Kinect presentation. Or first Kinect 2 presentations. Ooops... last two were from Microsoft...

I thought the Wii was actually a pretty good contender, despite it's obviously lacking GPU and that it was drowning in a casual/kiddie game hell ... or at least it could have been. It was, and still is, the only console to rival M&K controls. The IR aiming in games like Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Twilight Princess, etc. was the system's strength, it's what they should have been focusing on instead of motion controls. That path lead to horribly clunky motion controlled aiming of Skyward Sword instead of the superior IR aiming ... just so they could sell Wii MotionPlus, ugh.

TsaebehT I was talking about expectations vr. reality. I saw first video about the upcoming Wii console, and imagined what will it give, if done right. Real Wii turned out to be nothing like it. And that's exactly what I think will happen with all those AR ideas in the near future. It's not what people expect after watching many sci-fi movies and/or MS presentation. It'll probably be similar to "it looks almost photorealistic!" being said about Gran Turismo 1 on Playstation 1. "Holograms" = "photorealism" If you really stretch it, then yeah. ;) Wii was good enough for many, I don't say HoloLens won't be successful as well, for MS. But I do think it will have many serious, very serious flaws.
