Asus VG236 + 3D Vision Kit
  2 / 2
Thanks for the info.

Played around with the different settings last night and actually sat and played some games for a while.

I'm really impressed with 3D vision now. I played Gothic 3, Oblivion and Batman AA and all of them were completely transformed in 3D.
I can't explain it either, but I've got completely used to the change in brightness and I'm not really even noticing any flickering either.
That probably makes it sound like I was moaning about nothing at first, but they were things that I really noticed and now I assume I've just adjusted my brain or something! :-)

However, I'm still getting more ghosting that I would have thought. I'd not a funny colour and it's not isolated to any particular part of the screen. It seems to be the 'traditional' black/white ghosting rather than any off colour/muddy/overdrive ghosting.

I played around with trace free and it seemed to make no difference whatsover and I'm trying to ignore to effect but I've seen it in nearly every game I've tried apart from Oblivion.

Maybe reducing the contrast would help? Zloth, what settings are you using on your Asus?

I don't know if there is any such thing as a service menu on this monitor either? I've emailed Asus support but will try and give them a ring as there just seems to be hardly any info on this monitor.. The manual is completely useless ;-)

I've got my contrast set at 70, but the monitor is supposed to ignore that when it switches to 3D mode.

Well I've actually found that in game mode (haven't checked all modes) you can adjust the contrast while in 3D.
Looking at the outdoor tomb raider shot for example, I do get the strange coloured ghosting in the bottom right corner, along with extra pairs of feet and rails further up the picture! That was at a pretty high contrast level ~80. If you adjust it down, you can watch the coloured ghosting disappear almost pixel by pixel, which is quite an amusing effect actually. Taking the contract down to approx 55 removes the funny coloured ghosting completely (which I'm guessing is overdrive/tracefree related) and does reduce the overal ghosting quite a bit but it's still present.

I contacted Asus support and complained about what I said was 'bad ghosting'. Interestingly, they didn't actually ask me to troubleshoot at all.. They just said in this instance they recommend I directly RMA the whole thing back to them. I might just do that anyway but I still can't fully establish if the ghosting is normal or particular to my actual screen.

I also have the VG236 and also had to reduce the contrast to 55 to get rid of weird ghosting. I have always wondered if this is normal or not. I'd rather have the contrast at 100 to help brighten up the screen to counteract the 50% loss in brightness due to the active shutter glasses. If you do RMA the monitor to ASUS, please let us know if the monitor was indeed defective.

In the end I decided that it's unlikely that there's anything wrong with the monitor so I didn't RMA it. Plus by the time I'd thought about it, it was over the initial 7 day period so I would have been sent a refurb unit rather than a new one. That put me off as well.
From reading around, it seems that ghosting is just a fact of life with LCD screens and perhaps some of the intial reviews I read got a bit carried away when they said they couldn't see it. All that said, I'm very happy with my purchase now!
