METRO 2033 3d Ready, and it shows......
  1 / 5
Hi all, just posting a brief review and starting a topic about the new 3d ready game "Metro 2033".

Its a post nuclear apocalypse FPS, set in the metro tunnels below Moscow. It is done in the linear, camera smooth, cinematic type style. This game is impressive... Very impressive. It is visually polished, highly immersive, erie, shocking and frightening, and beautiful. The FOV is set a bit low, but this can be changed in the user.cfg file (i think). And as the game is also on consoles it supports gamepads.

First impressions where that even the menu looks good. In game the graphics are phenomenal. A high end GTX in SLI would not go to waste here at all. On full graphics settings, my single GTX 295 was only just able to hold on. When things got exciting, my framerate would drop to about 15fps. Other times, my card would suffice when exploring. The advanced graphics options simply allow only to select from "very high, high, medium, and low". There is no ability to make tweaks from the options menu.

The only minor things i have noticed in the 2 hours i have loved this game are; that there are minor control issues with mouse and keyboard, like no walk funtion, and an overly sensitive mouse aim. I suspect the mouse sensitivity could be controlled further in the user.cfg file. But like I mentioned before, I use my 360 controller for this game, as it smooths out the frame rate and offers me a slower more immersive walking/creeping experience.

I cannot overstate how impressive this game is. The stunning visuals, audio, and environments are excellent. I had feelings of dread when looking down that dark tunnel knowing i had to go there.

I recommend "Metro 2033". If you have a powerful rig especially, I would suggest playing this game soon.

The game looks amazing in 3d. Between this and Just Cause 2, I am starting to forgive nV for Bioshock 2.

For anyone using the 2233rz, I set the resolution to 1280x800 and the aspect ratio is exactly equal to native. The scaling on this monitor is pretty damned good and I don't notice any difference in fidelity whilst playing in 3d, however I am able now to play at Very High in dx10 mode with 40-50fps.

Downloaded on steam this morning. Ready to play it tonight. I doubt it would look as good as Avatar but my expectation is getting high.

The reason consoles look so decent with inferior hardware is because there is so much less overhead for one, and for two, the devs are able to really program to the metal and do not have to take multiple configurations into account. Not only that, they run the games at low resolution compared to how PC gamers expect to run their games and often forgo AA and almost always forgo AF.

When devs develop for PC, they have to make sure it can run on many different configurations and they are very much unable to push the capabilities of the systems since the performance boundaries of different systems will be different. different...there I said it again. /teehee.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':teehee:' />

Metro 2033 pleasantly suprised me. It's a really great game, especially for 3d vision. I really love the realism they have added. Like using you flashlight and recharging it. Or your objective map. If you want to read it you got to find some light or use your own lighter. /shifty.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shifty:' />

Interesting tip on the resolution change. I'll have to give that a try. My GTX 285 SLI setup sometimes struggles with the high action moments in the game at the monitors native resolution setting of 1680x1050.

MAybe someone here can help me!

I updated my drivers to the new CD 1.23 last night hoping I could run Metro in directX 10 mode. But when I select directX10 and reboot the game, my frames are so slowww in the menu screen. I didn't even try loading the game it was so slow. I'm running a GTX295, 4gb ram, 2.66 quad, win 7.

If I change back to directx9 then everything works fine!

any ideas?

I have to run this game in Normal Video settings to get decent frame rates. I am using only one GTX285 card, DX10 at 1680X1050 resolution. How do you see your actual frame rate in the game? Also, I might try the trick of reducing my resolution to 1280x800 to see if there is any effect.

How slow are you refering to? I'm running it with DX 10 but on High not very high and I get between 40 to 50fps per eye with Dips in the frame rate every once in a while.

Please see signature for hardware config.

I just disabled AA4x and my FPS got a LOT higher (GTX295 + i7@4Ghz) I think AA in this game has a big hit on FPS...

Over on the evga forums the guys are loving this game … and hating it lol. Not hating it like it’s a bad game, but they are all talking about how its pushing their rigs to the max. Some are declaring they are waiting for the 400s before they try it because it looks so good they want to enjoy it in all its glory on their first play through. I may do the same actually, but really only because I have so many new games to finish and some older ones I want to go back and play with 3d.

Got dx10 working fine. You have to set reconfig and restart game to get it to work. (reset twice)
Eye candy is even better with dx10 and still get pretty good fps of 30-50 per eye @1920x1080 all on high (not very high).

This game works much better with 360 controller wireless for pc, motion model is well implemented, smooths out framerate!
This game is outstanding! As good as batman aa in 3D.
I will be ordering 2x480s to run this game on very high!
Awesome!
