Games crash because of low memory on 4K 3D max settings
Is this a ram issue? I have 16gb normal ram and 8gb VRAM in my GTX 1080s? Both Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider crash when setting are maxed in 4k 3D. If I lower the settings they don't crash anymore. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a VRAM or RAM issue?

Something like that happens to me even in non demanding games. For example, Ys Origin at 5K (DSR) + 8xMSAA = crash. However, that doesn't happen at 1440p with 4x4 supersampling (which would be 10240x5760). I guess that it's a bandwidth problem more than VRAM issue. I can use SSAA and SGSSAA without problems, but combining DSR at 5K with a high amount of MSAA always gives me problems. In The Witcher 3 it happened to me at 5K, but not at 4K. I could do something like this: Main menu -> choose 5120x2880 -> disable 3D -> load a save file -> game working -> enable 3D -> crash.

Thanks for your input. It did seem strange as I wasn't maxing out ram when the crashes happened. Guess I'll just have to lower settings for some games...

you could be overheating or not enough ram you would have to look around the log files and dmp files if getting a BSOD tho to be sure.. it is really hard to diagnose with required info let alone no info basically..
