Problem with WoW after upgrade
  1 / 2
I have been using the 3D Vision with a few games one of them being WoW. It has been phenomenal and exceeded my expectations. So much so that I decided to upgrade my 8800GTX to a GTX260 55nm. After upgrading the video card everything works except for WoW. Once in game there is terrible flicker on the right eye. I've removed all nvidia drivers and reinstalled them. With the 8800 I ran everything on high. With the 260 I can get the flicker to stop but I have to reduce to minimum the "view distance" and "ground clutter" settings under video / effects. I also noticed that the pull down dialog boxes for screen resolution and monitor refresh are doubled now and I have to place the cursor between the two boxes to make a selection. Something similar seems to be happening to the map. Before the map was 2d. Now the map is 3d and my location on the map ends up being two markers with the actual location being in the middle of them. I even tried reapplying patch 3.0.8 which added 3d support. I am not sure what else to try now.

Some more info of your setup would help. What version are your Nvidia drivers?
Did you download the latest 3D Vision drivers, ie CD 1.04?

With my 8800 I was running 1.03. After the upgrade I tried reinstalling 1.03 with no success. When I saw that 1.04 was out I installed it and still have the same problem. The only other game I have installed is Left 4 Dead and that works fine in 3d. The nvidia steroscopic 3d test in the control panel also works fine. The problem only seems to be in WoW. I am running Wrath of the Lich King (WoW v3.0.8.9506). Nvidia drivers are 181.22. I don't recall which I was running with the 8800 as I installed the latest drivers when I upgraded to the 260.

Well, I'm not totally sure... mostly a guess... but are you sure the WoW config is the same? I know that WoW will sometimes reset all it's video settings if it sees a hardware change. Just a thought.

That's strange because the 1.04 CD explicitly says it supports the WoW 3.0.8 patch, I take it you already tried the new stereo option in game?

-----------------quote from 1.04 CD release note-----------
# Improved support for World of Warcraft patch 3.0.8, New features of the driver and patch include:

* Fullscreen glow effect now supported.
* New “Stereo” option available from World of Warcraft > Video > Options which allows in-game control over convergence and depth.
* In-game mouse cursor now supports correct 3D object depth. To use it, disable the Hardware Cursor support in World of Warcraft.

Yeah the in game stereo option adjusts for convergence and depth. The depth option seems to be linked to the depth adjustment wheel on the 3d Vision transmitter. Adjustments on one shows on the other. I'm not sure if convergence is linked to the shift+f5/f6 adjustments for the driver. I can adjust these to the point that I don't have the double images in the pull down menus under video options and no longer get the double image for the map pointer while the map is open. The thing is when I do that my depth in game is minimal. If I set the depth to where I like it then the double images return in the areas I just mentioned.

I opened a ticket with Nvidia a couple of days ago. I have not heard back from them yet. I haven't tried uninstalling WoW. I did try resetting all WoW settings by deleting the config.wtf file in the wtf folder. That was how I determined which video settings were causing the problem. I moved them back to max one a time. I also suspect that the 3d map and loading scenes (which used to be 2d) are a result of the 1.04 cd. This is just a theory as that is when I noticed the change. I may try installing 1.03 again. I still have the old 8800gtx so I may install that to determine if it is a generic software / driver issue or if it is related to the hardware somehow.

I have also encountered flickering problems with Nvidia 3d vision. In order for it to run best, make sure the room you are in has NO LIGHTS ON PERIOD. I had all lights off except for my laundry room lights on in the next room over and I had flickering issues. Once the light was turned off all of the flickering went away. BTW flickering still occurs during the day with all of the lights turned off. I suggest gaming during the night!!

Ok its not just you lol. I have to do the same with my GTX280. But most is I have to just turn down ground clutter. And I get flickering in like Stormwind. Makes me wonder what GRAPHICS card NVIDIA uses to get EXCELLENT rating for WOW haha. Its the ONLY game that flickers for me. I put back my 181.20 stereo drivers because when ever I look at the map I cant tell where I am there are TWO dots for me.

It's nice to know I am not alone. My ticket with Nvidia has gone to tier 2 support. I will keep this thread updated with any progress.

Hi there Logan,

Glad you are contacting our support team.

Just one quick thing to try, did you use the "NVIDIA Test Stereoscopic 3D" option in the control panel to see if the NVIDIA test application works fine for you? That might give us some good insight to understand if its a SW or HW issue.

Logan

So only when you play games do you get flickering in one of the lenses? Here's some ideas:
- Have you tried following all in-game instructions from NVIDIA (the green text in the lower right hand corner)
- Have you tried to make sure you have a clean driver install and a matching set (I recommend the CD 1.04 build)
- are you using a remote control in the room?

Actually the problem only occurs with WoW, all other games are fine. I have done a clean install with both the 1.04 and 1.03 build. The computer sits in a home office with no other remote controlled device in the room. I have tried in the daytime (sunlight only) and with lights on and off at night. I will try the new 1.05 build when I get home. The problem sounds identical to what others have mentioned in the thread about the "flashing" effect. I did not have this problem before I upgraded my video card.
