Hi All,
I looking for some recommendations for a new 3D Ready monitor. I'm completely new to 3D on the pc.
Current spec i5 - GTX660
I would prefer to purchase the 3D Vision 2 Glasses Kit, as I don't want the emitter built in to the monitor.
I watch a lot of films as well as playing games. Ideally would be a 27" monitor.
How well will my GTX660 work for 3D? Should I be looking to upgrade?
Thanks in advance.

Hey Mark,
I'm not accross all the current monitors so I'll let others make suggestions there, but I can give you a few pointers.
-Your 660 will work, but it won't work well, and not on good graphics settings. Many newer games may not work at all. Take your current frame rates, and halve them. That will give you an approximation of your expected performance.
-Go for 1080p. Anything higher will struggle to run newer titles smoothly even on high end cards. Even if you upgrade, I'd still stick with 1080p.

I am using a 27" Asus VG278H with incorporated 3D Vision 2 glasses (basically every day for about 8 years).
It is good, but not perfect, as it has ghosting, just like all of them. Even with that, i didn't played a single 2D game since, that's how much i love it.
As for the GTX660, i don't know, i had a GTX670 and it worked for a while but i had to upgrade it to a GTX970 to keep up with the new games. Even with GTX970 i have to play Fallout4 on medium settings to get at least 40-50 fps. Everything lower than this makes the camera movement jerky which induces motion sickness for me. But i suffer from motion sickness in all games, so you may get away with lower FPS.

I have now placed an order with Amazon for the Asus VG278HE and will be buying the 3d Vision Glasses and emitter separate.
However I can't seem to find anyone in the UK with the 3D vision 2 glasses kit in stock :(

3DVision will basicly suck half your frame per second. So you must have at very least 60fps in 2D to hope running games in 3D.
If not, you can use the Compatibility Mode who stretch textures to get 3D effect, this take less power but develops halos around objets/caracters, the 3D is pretty weakened too (low separation) but the 3D placement is true. I personnaly don't like it but some does.
I've the ACER GD245HQ/GD235HZ, I think this is one of the best 3DVision monitor. It's pretty old but works great, there is quite a lot of ghosting on the bottom of the screen and a bit in the upper. But with the good settings you'll love it, but it's a 24" though.
I've make a pattern to easily find crosstalk (ghosts) on screens, it will let you find the best setting for your screen:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/828986/which-is-the-best-3d-monitor
Crosstalk is the worst ennemy of 3D so I've try to make people share results, to compare and find the best product, but nobody care here... I can't explain why, cause it take least than 2 minutes to make this test... Laziness or selfishness probably.
Know that 3D gaming is dying, the only thing that make it alive is the HelixMod site and the community that fixes games. No more games are 3D, even 3DVision games are not true 3D. Be carefull about that, don't spend your money regardless. There is a lot of work from coding guys here to make it happened, but they work on their free time and can't correct all games, plus some are completly messed up and won't be ever corrected.
http://helixmod.blogspot.fr/
Believe me 3D gaming worth it, but it's dying anyway.
For me 2D is like using black and white over colors, it's ok but so less pretty.
Hope I helped a bit. CU.

The only problem with that choice of a monitor is that if you decide to implement 3D Vision surround at a later date.
I have a VG278HE/980ti, if I wanted to get two more for surround, I would also have to get two Active Display Port Adapters that cost around $100 each. Now if you bought a monitor that also had a Display Port connection, you would be future proof.

as noted elsewhere, I've been using a BenQ XL2720-z monitor and it's display is very good...issues with the software I'm using aside! Just in case anyone is looking for an alternative!

WOW! I can't believe it! I bought a kit last Year from Amazon and there were a lot...
You can try here and buy an "previously used kit" though:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00292BG82/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all&qid=1452561687&sr=8-2
Also, E-bay can help!
I think nvidia finally pulled the plug on the production of 3D Vision 2 glasses + emitters:(
If you LIKE it I would also recommend buying a spare pair of glasses to be a bit "future proof".
Also, 3D Vision is not really dying! As long as we, as a community, still have interest and still develop things for 3D Vision, 3D Vision will be as strong as ever! And we STILL DO DEVELOP FIXES EACH MONTH !
Currently, 3D Vision IS THE BEST 3D EXPERIENCE YOU CAN GET! with hundreds of game working in 3D (older) and over one hundred (didn't actually count but the list is here: http://helixmod.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html) of community fixed "3D Vision Ready equivalent" games.
(Tridef pales in comparison).
The only thing that is "dead" is future 3D Vision Ready games, since developers don't find it "worth enough for their time and budget"... After all we are a niche branch (sad...really...but is the truth).
In any case, once you experience you will understand why most of us can't go back to plain 2D ;)
(PS: Nvidia is still maintaining the drivers and fixing bugs we report, so is not an "end of line" product yet)

Thanks all for your replies. Ive found the glasses kit on ebay and should have them in just over a week. Monitor is due to me tomorrow.
I hadn't really considered 3D Vision Surround but I am considering a projector at some point when I can afford it.
I knew I would have to upgrade my graphics card sooner or later so that will probably be my next purchase.
Thanks again for your comments.
Also, 3D Vision is not really dying!
Ok so, which new monitors are 3DVision ready ?
Can we send full3D (even 1920x1080) through HDMI 2.0a with Nvidia graphic card ?

Yes, Nvidia has confirmed that it 9xx series of GPUs is HDMI 2.0 compliant and capable of 1920x1080P@120Hz.
No, there are not any "certified" monitors or projectors that support this currently via a HDMI connection.
The Asus VG278H is the best 3D monitor I've had. It still amazes me that more people don't get 3D gaming, and I can only assume they haven't seen a game running on a monitor that works as well as this one. If you want to go for surround, a model without the emitter is the way to go, but this is real power user stuff.
Some people have supposedly got 3D Vision working on the 2560x1440 ROG monitors, and that would no doubt be even better, but it is very hit and miss from what I understand.
