How so. It's the developer dropping the ball in this instance.

Without the ambient occlusion hack listed above, it's impossible to start a race.

However, even after doing the hack, when it loads the race all the roads and a lot of other stuff has no texture and is only black.
Another issue is that with the cockpit view, the right eye is in the cockpit while the left eye is far outside of the window looking at the sideview mirror.

Any fixes for this?

In the dirt3 gfx options turn ambient occlusion down or off, this will fix the black textures, well it does for me.

Thanks, that fixed the black textures.

However the game still feels a bit too buggy in 3D to really enjoy it. The cockpit view is messed up and I can see skidmarks and such on the roads moving as I get closer to them.

Otherwise the game looks great, and runs at a perfect frame rate on my humble PC.

Right click that pesky xml file after you have edited it and goto properties then select read only and apply /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />.
This makes the file read only so that it can't be modified/edited.
if you need to edit the file again just do the same but de-select the read only box /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />.

This game seems to play better using tridef.

Had to allso roll back from new drivers to 266 as i had the terrible 3dvision controller bug giving me 40% gpu and crap frames.

Can you post your tridef settings? After some tweaking with the projection matrix usage it nearly is perfect but I have to set shadows to lowest and there are still wrongly placed dropshadows under the cars. But you said you don't have any errors on ultra.
Which graphic driver version are you using?

I still get one eye with dark textures, having applied the XML config (write-protected) and newest Beta driver... /sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Try to force directx 9 in the .xml config file, this work for me in dirt 2.

directx forcedx9="false" to directx forcedx9="true"
