Question: Can this DVI cable run 120Hz and 3D vision
1 / 2
Hi I am looking for a longer DVI cable for my PC as I have set it up in my lounge room. My 1st gen ASUS VG278 comes with a short DVI cable (1.5m or 5ft, I guess?) and I want a longer cable to tuck my rig away in the corner of the room while the monitor is still in the center.
A while ago I bought a cheap DVI-D DL cable and it did not work. As soon as I kicked in 3D I had an error saying to use the cable that came with the monitor.
I heard that a 9.9Gbps cable is needed to display 3D and I could have has one that did not have that bandwidth.
however a 3m (10ft) DVI cable that boasts 9.9Gbps is at an outrageous price of between $40.00AUD and $70.00AUD at local Australian retailers and MSY (Cheapest local store in Australia) could not guarantee their cables would do 9.9Gbps. I found this cheap cable and wish to ask for advice on if this cable would work for 3D vision. It comes from China and is considerably cheaper than the Local Australian products.
I will copy and past the details of the cable as I know it is against most forum rules to share links to these these sorts of shopping websites, as advertising concerns spring to mind.
This cable is less than a quarter the cost of the cheapest local product with free shipping to Australia.

I got this cable and it does NOT work with my Monitor. If I select any more than 60Hz I get a 640x480 screen with"
"incorrect Cable. Please use the cable that came with your monitor."
Looks like only one DVI-D DL cable on earth will work on my monitor and that is the one that shipped with it. No other DVI Cable with surpass 60Hz and as the HDMI on my monitor is HDMi1.4 I can't get more than 60Hz with HDMI regardless of the GTX1080 having HDMi2.0b.
So I am stuck with either 60Hz and no 2D or a short cable meaning my box is very close to my monitor in my lounge room.
I have wasted money on 2 cables now and I am not wasting any more money on cables that won't work. Either the manufacturer lied about 9,9Gbps bandwidth or only an ASUS brand DVI made for the VG278 will surpass the 60hz boundary and allow 3D.

I have a pretty long DVI cable that works with 3D. I couldn't tell you where I got it from though, it was a long time ago. Just buy one from a retailer and return it if it doesn't work - most Australian retailers have a reasonable return policy (ask before paying).

when I have the credits to pay the high price of Australian retailers, I will give it a go. At least I could take it back.
I have heard 10ft (3.0M) is the max due to cable attenuation issues affecting the monitor/GPU sync.
Is this the case with DVI-D DL or is this a HDMi/DP issue? (My monitor does not have DP only VGA HDMi1.4 and DVI inputs). DVI is my only chance to get 3D and refresh rates exceeding 60Hz.

The cable you bought is a ripoff. I hope you can get a refund.
It is clear that proper DVI DL cables which do have the required bandwidth cost more than the simpler ones, but there is no guarantee that an expensive cable will be of good quality.
The product description of good cables is often insufficient, and the ones of bad cables are usually full of marketing speech that create more confusion than anything else.
For example the one you bought seems to be speaking more of the capabilities of the DVI DL format ("up to 9.9Gbps") than the actual capabilities of the cable they are selling you.

I bought it on Ebay so I won't get a refund. Like the pre-bricked Sandisk 256Gb MicroSD I got on Ebay last year. The seller did not even contact me back until I sent a bad review. Then the seller contacted me saying if I changed the review I'd get a refund. I got no refund and the seller closed down the account and set up a new one, with an almost identical name to get rid of the negative review. Ebay is a gamble, and I seem to always lose when I gamble.
I am through with Ebay and will never use it again now. at least with the extreme high price of Australian retailers in Australia under fair trade laws they are required by law to replace or refund if the cable is not what I asked for and I keep proof of purchase.
Ebay is just a good place to be ripped off and D***ed around for a refund that will never happen, and countries like China have no fair trade laws so I need to cut my losses and say "another life lesson learned"
It would have been great if the cable that came with my monitor wasn't so short. If it came with a 10ft or longer cable I would not be in this mess in the first place. *facepalm
P.S. If these monitors are so picky with the type of DVI-D DL cables they should have shipped with a backup cable in case the primary one gets damaged.

If you received something faulty/defective then it's their responsibility to pay for return shipping, if it's a cheap enough item most places will tell you to just keep it...

When ordering on EBay any thing that comes from China is a gamble. I would purchase from Amazon and if you purchasing from a 3RD party on Amazon like for fulfilled by Amazon this way returns are no problem.
I'm in the USA and order all my cables from Amazon great cables at very reasonable prices.

Not much in matter of fact the CPU runs very hot I would have to say about 5% increase if that. To be honest Windows 8.1 booted but I have not used Windows 8.1 with the CPU.

From what I know it is the GPU that mainly determines the 3D Performance. I have an i7-4790k and a GTX1080 and 3D is amazing. I would recommend upgrading your GPU instead, if you need that extra boost in 3D.
I think windows 10 is required for an i7-6700k to function properly and you said you were using windows 8.1
I have read many tech articles about the latest iterations of intel and AMD CPU's requiring windows 10 to function properly. That's a deal breaker for me in upgrading my CPU as I don't want to infect my system with the Windows 10 Virus.

I usually buy all of my cables through Monoprice or Amazon but I haven't bought a DVI DL through them yet, just DVI to HDMI.

I'm in the USA and order all my cables from Amazon great cables at very reasonable prices.

Not much in matter of fact the CPU runs very hot I would have to say about 5% increase if that. To be honest Windows 8.1 booted but I have not used Windows 8.1 with the CPU.
