4K passive 3D or 1440p active? Which do you prefer
  1 / 2
Just looking for a couple of opinions. I currently have a LG 49ub8500 that I use for passive 3D and as a computer monitor. I have to sit back a ways from my desk in order to use it but it is pretty great quality 3D none the less. I'm thinking about going to a PG278QR instead because I'll be able to be right at my desk, less brute force needed for 3D, and because I've read that pixel inversion is no longer an issue. My main concern is, will it look as good in 3D and is it a decent size for gaming. Has anyone here tried both?

Nvidia 3D Vision @ 1440p (active) IMO is better experience than 4K or VR or anything else atm. Of course it has to be 3D Vision ready or fixed correctly by the community. Just playing any old random game this way that's not ready or not fixed won't give you the full experience. Make sure that monitor can do 3d before you buy it. Its hard these days since some monitors that support 3d vision don't even advertise the fact anymore. There are still a few options out there but make sure you do your homework and confirm 1440p and 3d vision from the manufacturer or community!

I say save your tv untill you Are tested the active. I personally can't understand how anyone can use active hardware but oviously my Eyes/Brains Are too sensirive to flicker as i have tried with two monitor asua and lastly BenQ xl 2411 and it Was as horrible as it Was with asus few years back. Plus TN panels Are quite booring looking on colors. But Offcourse the image quality is better with monitor interms of sharpnes and otherstuff, But i would recommended try first. No 3D is ever perfect even though you had truck Loads of cash. There is compromises everywhere but it still beats the Hell out of 4k/2D

I have a passive 55" TV and a Benq 3D projector and briefly tested in the past Active 3D TV. In terms of comfort, passive definitely. In case of colors and brightness, again, passive. In case of ghosting, (besides DLP) Passive. In case of inputlag, for sure a Active monitor has much lower inputlag. In case of resources/resolution, active is better. Because for passsive you render 2 FHD images to see 1920x540 or 2 4K to see 3840x1080. I moded my projector to work at 1920x750@104hz. Flickering doesn't really get my eyes tired but if they are already tired from daily activities (staring at charts in the laptop or driving long hours) I can feel the strain. But I felt the same at 120Hz. The only reason I don't use my TV for gaming and use the projector is image size and inputlag. the 45-50ms my TV has is to much for Battlefield. The worst think about Active 3D is trowing away 75% of the light, the worst thing about Passive is trowing away half of vertical resolution.

Good summing Joker. With dual projector setup you also get great light output/brigness And fullhd resolution for both eyes. But also dual projector setup has flaws. -getting matching brightness and color balance between eyes. -super hassle because of multiple devices to be turned on and Having right setting = you Are the only one capable of using the system :D -lots of spare lamps on the shelf. Allthough on the plus side you never have to be without projector as its not An option both projectors fail At the same time.

Hi, Yes it is an edid override. Normally this method could work on other projectors that support 120hz 3D. I shared my edid with a few people but it didn't work for them and I can understand why. The edid is pushed at the limit in case of blanking interval and bandwidth. Some projectors might accept very low Blanking interval like mine and others not... same with bandwidth. If you know your way with CRU I can give you mine and based on that you can search for the limit in yours. Another thing that might be specific/or not to my projector is the fact that my glasses don't sink with refresh 105-117 but they sink just fine below 104.

Thanks for the info. I actually do have an active projector and active 3D doesn't bother much. Of course, since it is a projector, there is less ghosting than even my passive display. Maybe I'll order the PG278QR and test it to see if I'm happy with the results. I've read good things and the low lag sounds nice for UMvC3. I guess there's no chance of a 3440x1440 monitor being released with 3D support. That would be my ideal 3D solution.

Well: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1001005/3d-vision/samsung-tv-3d-settings-to-low-crosstalk-crosstalk-comparison-/ For me it's Active all the way. The only point for Passive is their is no setting to do, noobs will love that. Just saying: TV sucks, in 2D they can't even use 120Hz input... .

I'm french, so it may be not very english... Most french people are very bad in english. Sorry. What I mean is: The only advantage of Passive 3D is that you don't need to do anythings, just press 3D and put the glasses on your nose. Active 3D needs so much setting to look good or even works. Who use my Rabbit Crosstalk test to set their 3D, almost nobody, so their 3D is probably horrible. People says they don't like 3D, well so do I... I hate 3D with crosstalk and 3D crosstalk is huge in 90% of the 3D market products, making headach to who dare to try it. If only it was set to the minimum, maybe people would not have throw it away... On the market, 3D is vanishing, people don't buy anymore, no source, no quality product, to hard to set. Bye Bye 3D. On PC, I have past several hours to get PowerDVD 11 to 16 works correcty, and it's not the worst software i've used. .

Dugom, I don't know if you followed the part of the forum where discussion about Passive displays are. It is not really plug&play. So this is not an advantage of Passive 3D, but there are many other advantages of passive.

And how you disable Nvidias red text alert about unsupported resolution?
