3D Vision Longevity How much longer?
  1 / 2
I am deciding whether or not to sell my 3D vision setup and invest in the new 3D TV's or just continue to use what I got. I currently have a 61" Samsung DLP, GTX470, 2.4 Quad Processor, 4 GIGs DDR2 RAM. Basically 3D gaming is great but definitely not perfected. It kills framerates and I am weary of the 3D BluRay capabilities. Should I sell my 3D vision kit and wait for it to improve or do you think the 3D Vision kit will have at least a 4 year life span. I am worried about this being old tech and may consider selling it and waiting for the next gen. Are the new 3D TV's better than what I have got? How far down the road do we think console gaming 3D is. Sometimes I think Nvidia doesn't respond here anymore because they are working on something newer/better. Any opinions?

3d vision is by far the best 3d technology right now
even if it dies again (because there are no good 120hz displays again)
it'll be back in 5 or 10 years

How are you worried about the 3D Blu Ray capabilities? That makes no sense, doesn't the current version of PowerDVD have 3D Blu Ray support? It has Blu Ray support and it has 3D support, so I doubt they wouldn't have 3D Blu Ray support. While its true that 3D is framerate killer, you have a 470, so it can't be THAT bad lol. If you're looking to switch to console 3D gaming, you will have a long wait ahead of you, unless you want to play crappy games like wipeout or whatever the hell sony is releasing in 3D. The next consoles probably won't hit for another 2 years, that is a long time to wait for 3D gaming, especially if you have already gotten used to it.

Its not perfect, but nothing ever is on the PC, look at all the problems with Splinter Cell conviction on release date! I'm not talking about the S3D aspect of it either, I mean how can a game come out without support for the 360 controller? Assassins Creed 2 is another example. S3D is finally (albeit slowly) gaining popularity with developers and you're thinking about pulling out now? You gotta give it a little more time, early adopters always have to put up with this, its part of the game, always has been and probably always will be.

Though if you're in the market for a new TV, this makes sense, as I don't know if any of the new non-DLP 3DTV's work with 3D Vision (probably not). Of course they will be better screens, but what are you gonna use them for if not for PC games? You know the console games are gonna suck, so are you just going to watch movies on it? Or whatever they broadcast in on TV in 3D? It's not going to be much at first, you're better off sticking with 3D Vision and your current TV for now. If you have the itch to buy something, build an i5-750 or i7-930 system, should give you a decent boost and run you less than $500, you could get another 470 but I would wait that one out, as we are about to hit a big drought for games. Not much is coming out until August/September, and by then you could get another 470 for a good amount less than you would pay now.

Just give it time, it's not going anywhere (I hope lol).

Another thing to note...is that according to the 3D Vision Blog, ripping and re-encoding Blu Ray 3D movies is now possible...so you know what that means :) You know PC gets all the codecs, with consoles you have to wait for Sony/Microsoft to add in support with a patch, or you have to convert it to something it will read. IMHO thats too many steps, I would rather just be able to get something and open it right away without having to do any conversions.

Which equals 1 since 3D Vision is greater than FOREVER!!!!!!!!
P.S.: I am counting in millennium.

Seriously though, 3D Vision will be around for a long time. I've been gaming in 3D with Nvidia for almost 10 years now and 3D is bigger than its ever been. Its not going nowhere.

Your issues with the framerate isn't a problem about 3D, it's about the game developers not designing their games for it, they consider the available hardware and target a certain framerate in 2D. Since stereo3D needs 2x the power, you end up with 1/2 the framerate the game developers intended originally. Then there are the games on which the game developers miss their performance targets, they end up with beautiful but outrageously heavy games that have ridiculously low framerates already in 2D (Crysis when it was released, or more recently Metro2033). When game developers will realize people want to play in stereo3D they will modify their games and optimize them to make sure they run smoothly in stereo3D when the games are released.

For the hardware, 3D vision will last until display manufacturers start to take 3D seriously and use the standards that have been designed for 3D :
-> for computer to display connection use Display Port (DP1.1 supports 2x 1080p60 with left/right eye image marking, it's over one year old; the more recent DP1.2 goes much higher) or hdmi1.4 (with support for 2x 1080p60 frame packing format, which is in the maximum of hdmi 1.4spec but is an optional format which no TV manufacturer has implemented yet)
-> for shutter glasses synchronisation : use a standard VESA 3D sync port on the display so that you can plug any emitter with any brand of 3D glasses.

Until this day, your TV will still be an excellent choice. Keep it.

Heck yeah. DLP rocks. Plus the two main problems with a DLP TV that require replacement are a bulb and a color wheel that could probably easily be replaced by even the technologically ignorant. Good luck fixing a Plasma or LCD that dies in 5 years.

Anyway, there will always be some sort of work around for incompatible hardware. Eventually someone will find a way regardless of what the manufacturer intends. I'd definitely keep the DLP.

Let me start off by saying, AWESOME THREAD!

I love it when I can unleash my inner technology nerdness in threads

OK, op I have the same HL61A750, which is 3d Vision compatable. Please Remember that newer technology is not always better...

Our 3d Ready HD TV's have an LED light engine, with combination of DLP to give, "Hands down best 3d Vision Visuals"

Any other type of 3d Vision on a LCD, or Plasma, absolutely sucks in comparision. I have owned a Plasma 3d Monitor from Samsung and it has "Ghosting like crazy"

LCD screens also have ghosting in areas that DLP users don't If you haven't checked out other monitors in 3d, you really don't know how lucky we have it

Ok, worst case scenario. 3d Vision stops right now. So what do we have? We have awesome T.V.'s with 3d Vision that supports like 400 games! I would be satisfied with what I have now for the rest of my life!

It's like imagine a picture in the air, looking down at a big green grass field. Now, there are 4 sections and all the 4 sections are divided by fences. Now, there are 4 cows in each section. What do you think that each cow is doing? He is putting his head through the fence and trying to eat the grass on the other cows side! Isn't this true in our lives too? We can never be content...

We are so privileged to live in an era with 3d that is available like this. I think that we should enjoy what we have, especially Samsung LED DLP 3d Users and enjoy our 3d Solutions for many, many, many years to come!

Well, I kid you not, I took pictures this afternoon to put my 3D vision on Ebay. I think you guys have some excellent points but can you help me with these questions.... (this is not a rant, just rationalizing)
Let me start off and say I have been doing this for about a year now so I understand most of the basics.

1) I have heard of a non-glasses 3D technology on the horizon. Can anyone confirm and how far away is it?

2) Since such a small demograph have 3D technology, how long will it really be before it is "streamline"? I really feel like I am beta testing these things.

3) More of a vent but some of the imperfections are annoying. There should be autoconvergence with adjustable depth. I know I am asking alot but if you set this stuff up wrong it can really hurt the eyes or make the game look bad. Lighting and shadows appear to be far away from being fixed (although Metro did it right).

4) I am all about early adoption ( I have been gaming seriously since Pong), but losing half the FPS is HORRIBLE (yes, I understand why).

5) In order for me to add a GTX470, I would have to buy a new motherboard, processor, RAM. I would also have to have a machine that makes my computer invisible so the "warden" doesn't kill me. (note this here incase it happens /haha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':haha:' /> )

I am trying to figure this out. Don't get me wrong, I love 3D but I feel it needs to "cook" a bit more.

3D VISION ALL THE WAY!!!! /w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':w00t:' />

Even if you do sell your setup for a 3DTV it would be a waste of money at this moment in time, as the following shows:

1) Sky will be releasing there 3D HD Box at the end of the year, so it would be pointless until then.

2) There are no programmes in 3D.

3) Sony have said that there 3D update for the PS3 will be released in June/July, with it being sony and the first 3D firmware it will definately be delayed. Not sure about Xbox but it will probly be the same senario. Again being pointless until the update actually comes out.

4) You won't have a PC anymore.

So you would end up with a good lukin 3D ready display which can't utilies it 3D as there is no 3D content for it to utilies. (make sense? /ermm.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ermm:' /> )

So until all these are actually available the 3D part of the TV would be pointless. Waiting until these things happen and then purchasing the 3DTV at the time everything is available would definately save you a few £100.

Do i have a point here ppl?
