Its dead. Their activation server has been offline for a month with no ETA. If it isn't dead, its definitely dying. If their VR support is anything like their 3D vision, I will not use them for my VR hardware. I just built a rig with 2x gtx 980s for VR. I plan of selling these to get a Fury X. AMD's open source route is what i agree with more. Even if it doesn't run better, I'd rather put my money towards a company that would atleast try to make it better.
Pff... 3D Vision ALIVE??? Where??? Did you miss out on all the drivers from the past few+ months?
(I AM NOT TAKING ABOUT THE FANTASTIC MODDERS SUPPORT HERE BUT OFFICIAL NVIDIA SUPPORT)
They broke and broke the 3D Vision driver over and over again... Not to mention not fixing issues that are there for like 1 year ago...
3D Vision Automatic is END OF THE LINE!!! Look at GTAV... (Crashes over crashes and 2D/3D switch issues and so on...)
The only 3D Vision that exists today is Compatibility Mode.... Funny as I can play non stop all the games in Compat Mode without issues.. but once I enable proper 3D Vision Automatic... crashes or CTD or renders in different weird modes or even in 2D...
(Lords of the Fallen, DA:I, RE5, Witcher 2, Witcher 3, GTAV)
Sure, nvidia will fix the drivers to avoid blue screens, GSYNC LED crap issues (I couldn't care less about the freaking LED ON), etc, etc... Will they fix the 3D Vision Automatic driver to work PROPERLY ??? NOPE...
I'm really sad that I must give you this news (if you didn't already figured it out)... but with Win10 around the corner, 3D Vision Automatic is D.E.A.D :(
I still think we should create OUR OWN 3D VISION AUTOMATIC MODE if we still want to use 3D Vision... Relying on 3D Vision Automatic from the NV driver is PURE CRAP.... as we can see lately in HUGE amounts...
Really sad and I really wish they would pick it up back...but... I don't think is gonna happen....
Which tells me one thing... TO AVOID the VR implementation from Nvidia as well in the future....
(Now I'll go and poke one of my eyes out since WHY THE HELL NOT... I DON't NEED IT ANYWAY since everything is still 2D)
As much as I love 3D Vision... I don't think things will improve if we don't take things in our own hands...
I'll tell you right now, if AMD can be competitive with performance per watt on their next-gen card, I may go with AMD for the VR support. It's not like 3D Vision is likely going to work on Pascal's GPU drivers anyways.
Of course, it's AMD. About the only remotely nice thing you can say about Nvidia, is they're better than AMD:(

I like to make a distinction between the current state, and a possible future state.
Right at this moment, the future is completely murky, no question. Will Nvidia pull out of their death spiral? Hard to know. This isn't just 3D Vision- look at the forum posts for everything. G-sync, Rog Swift, SLI, drivers for current games in 2D, 4K, HDMI 2.0 support in 2D, receiver pass through problems, Batman DOA, and on and on.
Nvidia has big problems, and it's not just about 3D Vision. My personal take is that they simply must have lost some key engineers to the hot economy, and the people they've got left are simply incapable.
So future state? Hard to say unless Nvidia as a whole can get back to doing even trivial shit like keeping a licensing server working. Getting a decent driver instead of the ones we've had that make AMD drivers look good.
I won't disagree that if they don't get their act together, it's all doom and gloom for us too- I just make the distinction that it's PC gaming as a whole, not just us. If they can't seem to get a grip, I'd consider giving up PC gaming altogether.
As far as the current state of 3D Vision? Pretty great in my opinion, and I agree with lohan. I've never had so many games available at such a high quality of experience.
I've got a stack of old hardware that will last a very long time, there's enough residual hardware to last for at least 5 years even if nothing new comes out. 3D TV's are still sold by the bushel, another possibility. And let's not forget pro markets where there is more (pricey) 3D available than ever.
There is absolutely zero chance of me upgrading current hardware though. I'm not falling for that always upgrade path until it's clearly better than what I have. They always lie about the new stuff, and how much better it is. Win10 will fix all our problems. The newest cards will give stunning performance. Pfft. Running older drivers, everything I've got is eminently playable, even including newish stuff like project Cars, Far Cry 4, Witcher 3, and 100s of hella fun Indie games. (Thanks 4everawake, I, for one, really appreciate your efforts!)
So far at least the next 5 years- it's got some value using current hardware. Scoff if you like- but the last 3 years have seen a modest 50% bump in performance. And performance is the only reason I would consider 'upgrades.'
But... if you only care about the very latest AAA games, and have a deep desire to run the newest of the new- yeah, you're screwed.

If I were a better prophet, I would imagine this:
a congregation of the fantastic guys from Helixmod (and other talented and ambitious people from Earth) into a company, funded maybe through Kickstarter. (Personally, I would be happy to contribute.)
People in this company, I imagine, would have the financial support, ergo the full time and superior incentive to create a software able to convert every game (and not only -see The Witcher 3 wich is not just a game IMHO) into a "really Real Stereoscopic 3D", by pushing just a few buttons inside the specific program. (if you are thinking Tridef, don't! Tridef seems to be defunct).
I would imagine this new company -let's call it Helixmod Ltd.- working closely with the game developers and nVidia [AMD?], to the benefit of all parts and to the joy of the two-eyed people.
If I was a man with ideas, I would imagine some marketing shows at the next E3 and maybe in cinemas all over the world, where, to the masses of unaware two-eyed people, it would be shown live, on huge screens, really Real Stereoscopic 3D real-time in-game footage. If done properly, I couldn't imagine a human been wanting to play any game in the flat 2 dimensions. No more. I, for one, already can't. Anymore.

I hate that I love 3D gaming so much!
I actually haven't played a game in almost a month because I've actually become depressed with gaming, and this directly relates to 3D gaming, and Nvidias lack of support and their FUCKING CRAPPY drivers.
I have to have fidelity in games, and 720p 3DTV play wont cut it, even though I have multiple 3D tv's and projector. My gaming woes are partially my fault for wanting the best of the best. I gave up surround 3D gaming because of the hassle. I went to a Rog Swift (3 times and all went back for different reasons), but the ghosting, combined with no SLI made me give up on it. I then tried 3D in 4K passive 3D and I was blown away, and I'm currently using a 4k LG 8500.
My woes started with Dragon Age Inquistion. It looked so amazing in 3D, that I had to have it work and refused to play it in 2D. I spent over 20-30 hours trying to get it to work, going from win 8.1 to win 7, and many trial and error settings changes, etc. I got so fed up with trying to get it to work that I got sick of the game and haven't played it again.
Then came GTAV.......
Now with the Witcher 3 SLI does NOT work in 3D at 4K. So I can't get a playable frame rate, even though I own two 980ti.
Then came the problem with drastic performance drop in 3D because 3D vision will not work with more then 3 cpu cores. Many games, even at 1080p resolution have horrible performance with GPU usage going as low as 30% per GPU.
I've spend WAY more time trying to get games working then actually playing anything. It says I've played 8 hours in GTAV and I havnen't completed a single mission. I've played 10 hours of Witcher 3 and haven't done a single thing in the game. I'm constantly monitoring everything with fraps and afterburner, and getting pissed at what I see with 3D performance.
I start playing at 4k 2D and EVERYTHING is perfect, SLI works, frame rates are 60fps, etc. BUT it's fucking 2D. aaaaaahhhhhhh!
Also, I spoiled gaming with the Oculus Rift. Playing Half Life 2 and Alien Isolation fully with the DK2 was a transformative experience. 3D vision can't touch the immersion offered from VR, but I sold the DK2 because of the crappy visual fidelity, those damn pixels are way too visible. But, I still remember how awesome the experience was, and I'm EAGERLY awaiting the CV1 and VIVE. Going back to 3D vision after a few months exclusively using the rift was a different experience...
I almost wish 3D was officially dead, and the great community here would stop fixing games and the only option would be 2D gaming or NO GAMING, and just wait for VR to mature. Of course, I don't wan't you guys to stop fixing games, because 3D is so much better! and I greatly appreciate what you guys do and how much time you spend fixing games. If it wasn't for my severe ADHD, Id most likely be trying to fix games myself. But, I get distracted and frustrated very easily... Gaming was actually one of the only things I was able to concentrate on.
Mostly I'm just really pissed at the crappy support, and drivers from Nvidia, and I'm wondering if they will just dump 3D vision from future drivers entirely.
Getting my first 3D vision setup many years ago, was one of the best moments of my life, and it seems like it may be time to move on soon.
I just want to enjoy gaming again :(, without all the troubleshooting and hassle. I own a PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U, but haven't really been using any of them lately. No good exclusives, coupled with the fact that I'd be stuck with 2D only really has made gaming boring for me lately. This sucks for me as gaming has been a huge part of my life, and it really feels like something is missing now. Not to mention, there has been very little innovation in gaming for the past few years. We are basically playing the same games over and over and over...
Thinking of going to a single 1080p screen and selling one of my 980ti. What is the best 1080p monitor available? low ghosting, no iversion, etc.
Thanks guys.

For the most part this post could have been written by me, Conan. Yes it is a real burden being a perfectionist who is only able to enjoy if he is totally convinced that everything is set to perfection! I often envy those who can settle for "just good" and are perfectly fine with that.
My buddys are making fun of me on a regular basis because while they just play and enjoy their 2D console games I am fiddling, modifying and optimizing my 3D-PC games which recently even has become inevitable to just get those games acceptably running in 3D.
Yes these are hard times for 3D Vision and in case my initial post was not clear about that I say it again. Nvidia-wise 3D Vision is dead since a long time now. All I wanted to say was that this great community here and this community alone is keeping it very alive.
I am also highly awaiting VR and I really hope that VR is able to revive 3D/VR to a degree where it is finally accepted and welcomed by the masses. My experience so far with VR was the exact same as yours, Conan. With the Rift DK1 as well as the DK2 I saw incredible potential to a degree where I abandoned 3D Vision for a few weeks if not a few months. My initial impression was "This is it. This is the next big thing!"
But then beside the huge potential I was not able to really enjoy gaming with the Rift in its current state because of those damn pixels/the crappy resolution. With the Rift I never just "stood there" in a given game watching the scenery with my jaw dropped in the light of sheer beauty. In fact the longer I stood there the more the crappy resolution became apparent.
So I went back to my HMZ-T3 (which already features a lot of those VR-benefits while maintaining the awesomeness of 3D Vision) for all those First/Third-person games and additionally I built a 3D Vision Surround-Setup for all the other games (mainly Beat'em Ups, Racing games, games like Trine......)
Still I say AND hope that VR (Rift/Vive...to a much lesser degree Morpheus) will be my next big thing but this will only happen if VR also delivers on the graphical fidelity-front. Also there is one thing that prevents me from thinking that VR will render 3D Vision totally obsolete and that is the reason why I bought the 3D Vision Surround setup additionally to my HMZ-T3. Eqzitara (by the way has anyone heard of him lately?) also mentioned this when he gave us his first impressions with the Rift DK2. While 3D Vision can be used for every game of every genre I don't see VR delivering when playing games of genres that I currently play on my Surround setup.
So right now I am hoping for VR to take over and elevating the experience for all those games/genres that I am currently playing on my HMZ-T3 (First person/Third person-games) but I am not sure it will be a fitting solution for every genre!

I just don't get how a company worth so much money can't keep their 3D tech alive. Especially with VR giving 3D a new lease of life!
Aren't they proud of the amazing 3D tech that they pioneered?
It can't be for financial reasons as the community are making fixes without being able to access the source code for games and making them perfect (or close enough)
Nvidia has its gameworks teams that could get this sorted whilst a game is being developed but they choose not to?!?
How hard would it be to take the 720p limit off 3DTV Play?
I'm no programmer but surely it's just a few lines of code that needs changing?
Why would you not do it as a company?!?
The amount of gfx grunt you would need to run 4k 3D would create a lot of hardware sales surely?
Someone please enlighten me as there must be something I've missed!?!? It's like they want to kill of 3D for no logical reason!
Can't someone hack 3D Vision to remove this resolution limitation?
If nvidia aren't going to support it anymore, why don't they make it open source so at least the community can have a bash at what they can't/can't be arsed to do/can't be arsed to pay to do/whatever other reason.
I really don't like nvidia anymore. I sold my 690gtx and bought a 980ti to get rid of my SLI woes but this 3D limitation annoys me.
Some people have 60hz 4k working over hdmi 1.4 though 4:2:0 colour compression but they can't give 3DTV Play 1080p!?!?
Someone please explain as it just seems like some stubborn buffoon in the company holding the tech back for no reason!!?!
Anyone got an insight?

Of course Nvidia isn't going to support the product anymore, they already have your money. We all bought high-end cards/rigs to run their 3D. I despise companys who treat their products/customers this way and I think everyone should be talking about this more. Nvidia gets alot of love on the internet because their cards are slightly better than what AMD can offer. Nvidia just isn't a company I want to support anymore and I think everyone who feels the same should spread the word more. The way their 3DTV customers are being handle hasn't been very public so far.

Well for me it's simple, once it breathes it's final breath and it's to the point where the latest games I really want to play have no hope of 3d support. I'll be jumping ship on principle. There will be no longer any reason to stay with the company. Or perhaps I'll just simply give up on gaming completely. 3D has in a way ruined it for me, the alternative just doesn't live up to it.
4k is nothing compared to correctly supported 3D title
If it's because it never really took off commercially, what they should have done is do some advertising in cinema shorts to 3d movies, to show people the possibilities of the technology cause it seems most people just simply aren't aware.

Helifax is so damn right about all he wrote. How can we "push" Nvidia to work again (and "demand" at least AAA titles to have real 3D support) ? with petition..? Should this be enough ? I don't think so but still maybe it's something if many users join in..
I am certain that we will all support whatever move Helifax with the other great 3D fixes' modders put in action.

3D gaming is very difficult to wean one's self off of, it took IPS colors + 144hz + gsync to do it for me (plus my monitor has the best contrast I've seen on an IPS / TN panel which is pretty nice in and of itself).
And that's the thing, no new monitor technology will be built for 3D Vision (unless pigs start flying), on top of all the other advancements in terms of GPU's and OS that have already been mentioned. I still catch myself thinking of how much better X game that I'm playing would look in stereo, but not often enough to bring down my enjoyment.
This is the second time I've had to go back to 2D gaming, as I used to game with NV's old OpenGL stereo drivers. I remember playing the original Alice and Half-Life 1 in stereo. I think Quake 1 was the first game I saw in 3D, I was totally amazed at seeing the lava on some level actually flowing under the floor. In 2D is just seems more "hinted at".
Oh well, VR seems to have a much more broad acceptance, even if niche at the start. Hopefully that'll be the one that sticks around.

If you got couple dlp projectors Try the dual projector setup with omega filtters. Passive 3D is something different in terms of comfort
And ghostfree. If you got projectors (allthough they should be same model) You only need the filtters and geobox from wnstv
In the ballpark of 5-700 hundred dollars. You Also get superb movie setup

I'll tell you right now, if AMD can be competitive with performance per watt on their next-gen card, I may go with AMD for the VR support. It's not like 3D Vision is likely going to work on Pascal's GPU drivers anyways.
Of course, it's AMD. About the only remotely nice thing you can say about Nvidia, is they're better than AMD:(
Right at this moment, the future is completely murky, no question.

Anymore.

Thanks guys.
