"Failed To Release D3Dev" and G-Sync issues, Asus PG278Q
Hi everyone, yeah I seem to be having a few issues with either or my display driver, my monitor and possibly Windows 10. I am leaning towards corrupt display driver, as I've had a few display driver failure induced full system lock-ups and usually after enough of these problems such as what I'm experiencing can crop up. I have an Asus Swift PG278Q and lately G-Sync has been refusing to work, which is usually (but not always) alleviated by unplugging the power from the monitor and plugging it back in. Lately I've been having to do this basically 3-4 times a day so I figured it would be time to clean reinstall the display driver I've been using for a while now, 388.71. So I restart in Safe Mode and run DDU as an admin, restart and reinstall 388.71. Afterwards, trying to get 3D Vision set up again, upon trying to initialize it through the set-up wizard, neither the emitter nor the NVCP 3D content would actualize and their absence was accompanied with a warning "Failed to release D3Dev". After trying this a few times and then trying after restarting the PC I figured I would revert to the restore point I created before trying to reinstall the display driver. Now, although 3D Vision works again, G-Sync is refusing to work, and that's after unplugging the monitor. I'm truly at wits end here. First, usually using DDU to reinstall this display driver alleviates all issues, but now 388.71 is doing for me what attempting to update to other recent drivers was doing, breaking 3D Vision and inducing the "Failed to release D3Dev" nonsense. Now, G-Sync doesn't want to work anymore. What could be the problem here? I'm still on Creators Update 1703. Any help greatly appreciated Update: SFC / Scannow returned without any integrity violations, so I want to rule out Windows being corrupt but am leaving that open as a possibility. Could it be the monitor? Update: Restarting again and now G-Sync appears to be working again. It seems switching between 3D Vision and G-Sync may be introducing problems, not sure if the fault lies with Nvidia or Asus here but this is really kinda unaccepable. I shouldn't have to restart the PC to switch between the two nor should I have to terminate power to the monitor to resolve G-Sync issues.

In a nutshell, Yes. Actually, if you only need to restart then you are actually pretty lucky. On this monitor (and it's refresh) Gsync is extremely buggy when paired with 3dvision. Obviously the two do not work together but they also do not co exist together very well either. For this reason I leave Gsync off as I'd much rather have 3dvision 99% of the time. As to where the fault lies. Unsure, if it's driver related or the monitor itself, but as the monitor has not ever have received a firmware update as far as I know the problem tends to go away after leaving the power cable out for a few minutes I assume it's an Asus issue.

I just got another full system lock-up (I believe display driver failure induced) playing GTA 5 online after a few hours, with clocks that 99% of my other games are stable at (2000 MHz, 1080 Ti under full water block). Since I'm not positive it was just the display driver I've increased the vcore on the CPU 5mv and dropped the clocks down to 1987 MHz on the GPU. Anyhow, yeah after restarting the computer G-Sync indicator refused to turn red, and disabling G-Sync and re-enabling in NVCP didn't fix it, so I restarted the PC a second time and it was the same problem, I even tried unplugging the monitor each time and it didn't work. So I completely powered down the PC, turned off the PSU, and then unplugged the monitor, then plugged it back in then turned the PC back on. Only now does it come back on. I am so frustrated with this monitor, like I'm totally over it, I've been having to deal with this crap every day for the past 3-4 days. If I could afford a new monitor I would spring for a 2D 21:9 curved one and just say goodbye to 3D Vison. Very close to doing so. Sick of the problems. Not sure if it's the monitor of Nvidia but shame on both of them for the abysmal quality control and support.

I have the PG278QR, Windows 10 FCU, and never had a problem switching between 3D and G-Sync. I do it multiple times a day when my mother wants to play Zelda BOTW (Cemu). The only problem I have is that switching G-Sync resets my vsync setting in the global profile. I commented just to note that this problem you two have isn't 100% guaranteed.

PG278QR and Win7. I have allways deactivated 3D in NVCP, that makes G-sync available instantly, and thus nothing gets a reset in NVCP!

I should note that I do not get any problems with gsync if I am just running the primary monitor so I assumed it was a multi-screen related problem. (apart from windows constantly reminding me I have a gsync capable monitor while I am using division which is borderline offensive. I guess starman is not using multiple screens though. "Failed To Release D3Dev" does seem to me to be more of a driver windows problem than an issue with the monitor and I guess I should clarify I have only seen this issue once and a driver reinstall fixed it. Also BOTW in 2D?!! Blasphemy! =)

I'm still on 1703, not sure if that's a problem but I think that the primary issue here is that if I attempt to update the display driver, or apparently, attempt to reinstall the current driver, even using DDU in Safe Mode, after the driver is installed I cannot activate 3D Vision and I get the "Failed to release D3Dev" error upon trying to use the wizard for the first time in NVCP. I've had this issue before when trying to update to newer drivers from 388.71 and using System Restore back to 388.71 alleviated the issue but now apparently I can't even attempt to clean reinstall 388.71 without getting the problem. Any ideas?

1709, yes. The wizard works for me but I never use it since I discovered the Advanced 3D Vision config tool. @Necropants: yeah, 2D. The fake 3D mode of the fix was decent, but I haven't played the game in ages because I'm kind of angry that I can't play the emulator in real 3D :p. So I'm somewhat waiting for a miracle to happen or something.

Yes. If it were DX11, we would probably be playing Wii U games in 3D by now :(. At least in RPCS3 the OpenGL wrapper can stereoize shaders, but not in Cemu (at least months ago the emu crashed it I tried it).
