My Acer GD245HQ review experiences of a new 3D vision user
  11 / 16
here's an experiment to show that OVERDRIVE does not cause the DISPLAY SHARPNESS
enter service menu
switch OD to OFF
go to Reset, hit the 3rd button
the sharpness should go away, and brightness should increase
switch OD to ON
go to Reset, hit the 3rd button
the brightness should decrease, sharpness doesnt come back
exit service menu (but dont restart the monitor)

go to http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/sharpness.php
notice that there's no oversharpening (the image is uniform gray when looked from distance, no blocks)
play a 3d game
notice that there's no ghosting (OVERDRIVE IS ACTIVE)

all in all, they goofed up with this monitor's firmware
Disabling the OD made no difference regarding the bad input lag, at least for me.

That's another thing I forgot to mention in my unbiased review: try putting a CRT next to this monitor, the input lag is clearly visible when dragging windows or playing fast paced FPS games like quakelive.
Is it because of the input lag, the general slowness of LCD display changing its crystals, or both? The Acer does have some input lag it seems: (16ms is two frames at 120hz)

- The Acer shows from zero to about 15-16 ms delay compared to the ViewSonic, but have in mind that both displays are running a clone image (using DVI splitter) with resolution of 1680×1050 which is not the native one for the Full HD Acer display!

How interesting! please contact Acer and explain. The more input they get, they bigger chance they will a.) release a firmware with more options b.) do better with their next display.

Is this monitor really 23.5"? The other 120hz LCDs are 23", and my CRT is 20.0" according to specifications but measures 19.7". My dads 24" 1920x1200 measures 24".

Is there a difference with the "bid" at the end of GD245HQbid?

i used acer online contact, wasted like 7 days asking in different ways, they dont want to put me through to an engineer/service center repairman unless i call them, and even then im probably going to waste an hour with noob support people
the GD235HZ and GD245HQ are the exact same monitor, running exact same firmware
the only difference is that in europe, you can round UP the screen size (so 23.6" becomes 24", so GD24)
in america you have to round down, so 23.6" become 23", so GD23)
the input lag is due to image processing in the display, it's not the same as response time.

i also contacted the italian acer support trying to explain the problems when the overdrive is enabled (2d low quality) and when it is disabled (losing the brightness/contrast setting when turned off). They just ignored the content of my messages and invited me to send the monitor to the assistance. I explained it's not a problem of my monitor but a project defect. No chance, they just ignored.

This is not the way to listen own customers and make a better and winning product. Acer, wake up!

i currently just always run in service menu.... using the trick to turn od off then on
except you cant change input source or brightness in this mode...
you can change color temperature though, thats what i use to change brightness between 3d and non 3d (monitor will still go 100% brightness in 3d mode)

I just sent a message to http://www.theacerguy.com and told him the gd245hq would be very good if the issue of overdrive ghosting and/or sharpening of the text would be fixed, i.e an option to adjust them in the menu. You guys should too, tell him what you want.

rajkoderp: Do you think some guy at Microsoft realized the same, and created a monitor driver that fixed this? There have been reports of people downloading a monitor driver file from Windows Update in Vista 64bit and got much better 2D quality.

thats bullcrap
the right side of the screen intermittently gets sharpening turned off if you mess with the service menu
this is probably what he experienced, you cant do anything about this with drivers or anywhere other than the firmware inside the monitor itself
as i said before this isnt overdrive ghosting, overdrive is only in effect when you have a CHANGE of pixel values, while this is just normal "horisontal edge enhancement" that almost every monitor/tv has, its just turned on by default to a high value and cant be turned off on this display
i sent a message to him too, doubt he will be able to do anything

yesterday my gd245hq went crazy.
The right side of the screen was black, while left side was still working. I can confirm that was a screen issue.
So I unplugged the AC cable for 10 s, then replugged it and all went right.

i have read this issue from many italian and german users. Someone sent the monitor back and get refunded because there was no new monitor available.

someone from the USA should send their monitor in to acer for a firmware upgrade, see if they actually have one that fixes it, because i called their number they gave me and it was about as useless as the emails were, just repeating some things over and over, nobody knew anything

I understand it is frustrating with malfunctioning hardware but please try to be kind. If you are patient and humble with Acer employees it is much higher chance they would put more effort into this. Be a bit idealistic.

An angry roar on online forums from disappointed customers also have an effect though...

Hi guys,

I've bought this LCD and with everything you said, I'm gonna add:

there's some buzzing noise (coming from the power supply I guess) if you put your LCD in 120Hz & you watch things with too much color(black?) contrasts (like http://forums.wow-europe.com/board.html?fo...11219&sid=2 , it does a freaking unbearable noise, have to put it in 60Hz to not hear the sound.

Is there no way to fix that?

Because I can take it back to the vendor for still 5 days, I don't want to switch the OD for the desktop, the Hz for the gaming, can't play game in windowed, just too much trouble for the price /pirate.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':pirate:' /> , how the freak can you release a LCD like that?

Thx for your answers, and sorry for the bad words.
