If 3D isn't enabling, you can try to force exclusive fullscreen in the d3dx.ini file.

- Open the d3dx.ini file.
- Scroll down to where you see:

; full_screen=1 forces creation of full screen devices and swap chains.
; use this for 3dtvplay if game won't active stereo mode.
; full_screen=2 will also disable SetWindowPos which might help in some games.
;full_screen=1

..and change it to this:

; full_screen=1 forces creation of full screen devices and swap chains.
; use this for 3dtvplay if game won't active stereo mode.
; full_screen=2 will also disable SetWindowPos which might help in some games.
full_screen=1

If the game crashes, try setting "full_screen=2" instead.

@ Blacksmith56: Thank you so much for the fix. I have owned Dear Esther since the beginning, but my wife and I played the Landmark edition for the first time last night and it was beautiful. My wife grew up near the seaside but our current home is quite landlocked and she is homesick. She walked around the shoreline in the game for an hour, not even "playing" the game, but just staring at the horizon and taking in all the sights and sounds. Unfortunately she had to turn 3D off 75% of the way through because she isn't used to it and it was making her nauseous. But good job and again, thanks!
