Will the GTX 970 be enough for 144hz 3D gaming with G-SYNC.
2 / 2
I got a Ga 97 G1.. 27"144 and NEWER games run great in you guessed 3D VISION. Yes ANY GAME will get more FPS if you have 2 GPU's. Can you get by with one? YEP! This is at 1080P.. higher you might want sli..talking 3d

GTX 970 is the sweet spot for 1080p gaming, both 2D and 3D.
In my opinion if you're gonna get a new card, stick to single card setup. SLI usually has way too many unwanted issues.
Right now the best bang for your buck is a 980ti (970sli is not worth it imo)
For the time being you can clock your 970 to 980 speeds as well until you decide to upgrade.

If you simply check prices your best option is a single 980Ti, with this choice you will avoid SLI and it's cons (at least you will for now, if you consider to upgrade in 1-2 years you will have the oportunity for another one 980Ti,something that you won't if you go SLI now).
The performance difference between 970/980 SLI vs 980Ti is same in an average scale (some games benefit for SLI,some for single due to no profile or no good multi gpu-scaling).
You won't regret buying two 970 or 980 but there is a big chance (more than 50%) that you will in ~2 years most..

I'm pretty much convinced now to get a GTX 980 Ti. I want to save as much as I can so I'll pick up the PNY reference model. I pick that one because is one of the cheapest and it has lifetime warranty which will come handy for a card that expensive. I know is not the fastest, but I'll be playing at 1920 X 1080 so it'll be enough, I think it'll be enough even for 1440p so I'll be covered even if I pick a higher resolution monitor. What I need to do now is to save for the next 4 months because I don't have a dime for the card yet. I wanted to do some research in advance, which is free and that's why you see me posting here.

I don't have a GTX 970, I have a GTX 660 instead. I was planning to get GTX 970 SLI, but the members here convinced me to get a single GTX 980 Ti.

There is nothing wrong with SLI except in just a few games where the scaling is not ideal.
But SLI works in 95% of the games and GIVES better performance than one card.
If a game doesn't have SLI bits enabled you can add them manually via nv inspector anyway...
In this case I don't know if 2x970 will be better than a 980Ti. You need to make some research, but don't discard SLI just because a few people say it without actual PROOF. Also, like I said don't expect to see double gain in every game, but you defo get performance improvements using a second GPU.

Also you should have in mind what type of CPU you have, to prevent bootleneck. I have a single GTX 660 TI thinking to move to one single GTX 970, and the reason I do not think about 980 is because not only the price but also the fact that for my rig (CPU intel i7 930 + 6Gb Ram DDR 3 1600 Mz) apparently that is too much power.
What I really do not know is what difference I can expect changing from 660 TI to 970 without changing anything else. And what I really do know is the cost of the change..., around 350€.
