I don't know how it is for other projectors but for my Benq SBS is worse than 720P but Top Bottom is much better than both.
I am feeling the same way at least for this fix, which is fine by me, I can use either SBS or TB.
The only game I have gotten this to work for is Dark Souls 2 DX 11, if anyone did some tricks for Witcher 3 or Far Cry 4 that was different I would like to know. I can't get either of those games to cycle with F11 or any other key binding. I am still re-dl'ing AC4 to test that one. Still, I am really please with Dark Souls 2 in TB.

I tested this morning Dying light on my LG 55UC970 and IT WORKS in 1440P.
You have some wrong setup at your end. If by picture in picture you refer to small image in the middle of the screen than you need to open NVIDIA Control Panel -> Adjust desktop size and position-> Select aspect ratio and perform scaling on Display.

For my 46inch tv, SBS 1080p is worse than frame packed 720p and TAB is about on par with FP. FP 720p offers better performance so will probably stick with that.

Ok thks Joker18 and Ramps, it works in 1440p with huge gain of fps (x2) but with huge loss of quality image compare to 4k but playable if you have a low GPU, Ramps ;)

My TV's scaling is so good there really isn't any visible difference between SBS and TB and smaller than expected difference to FullHD image. I didn't test 720P because i would need to change my setup and I won't.
Dying light on the my Benq w1300 on the other hand is as it follows.
720p@120hz - zombies from distance look like ants made out of squares. Leaves watched from distance are squares. Electricity poles and water towers or other thin poles are a mess. Up-close objects and text looks OK.
1080p@60hz SBS - Zombies have a shape but you can still see pixels. Everithing is blurier than in 720P. Small text looks kinda bad. There is a lot of aliasing even if I crank up Antialiasing. Grass, leaves are a complete mess.
1080P60hz TB - Zombies from distance look OK, you can make up some details. Leaves are not squares but still there is some blur in it, grass doesn't seem to have to much aliasing. Water Towers, Electricity poles look are quite OK. Just a little bit of aliasing. Some of the text looks weird.
My conclusion is that it depends very much of the image processing done by the projector/TV. Even if the no. of pixels is the same for SBS ant TB there is a big difference in image quality, Pixels are probably stretched and deformed. 720P has lower no of pixels and this is visible, no matter how much some would like to believe it is not.

SBS through checkerboard is working fine this way. Looks better than 720P imho.
Is there a way to use that knowledge to get 1920x1080 working at 30Hz over HDMI 1.4 (3DTVPlay)?
Got a Benq W1070 and the difference 24Hz to 30Hz is huge...
Thanks
Jack

The 24Hz limitation is written in the drivers somewhere. The only way would be to find out where and hack it. I've looked for it unsuccessfully using freeware. Someone with more knowledge of DLLs could probably use something like PE Explorer and a dependency walker to find and change it, but it would need changed every time that there's a new driver.

For me also TB looks better than SBS....with TB distant object now look more sharp than using 720p FP. And closer objects also looks better. I have to setup again the settings in the TV, now i'm using Sharpness = 100. With 720p i have to use 90 for example to get a better image. Also i have a 5 - 10% impact in performance using 1080p/60hz TB compared to 720p FP (i will test OC'ing my GPU to get back that %)
The image quality and definition depends on the image processing that is done by the 3DTV or Projectors, some models do a better job with one 3D mode than other....others models i've tested when they have to stretch the image ruins the quality (for example using 720p), For example my TV Checkerboard and Interleaced looks like sh**t....others have some really nice algoritms for upscaling..........this have to be tested in each individual setup and settings used in the TV/Projector.

Testing so far for me:
Dark Souls 2 DX 11 = Works perfect in win7 and win10 - TB Looks great
Witcher 3 = Can not get to cycle with F11 win7 and win10
Mad Max = Works but environment glitches in and out win7 and win10
AC4 = Can not get to cycle with F11 win7 and win10
Far Cry 4 = Can not get to cycle with F11 win7 and win10
Still looking for info on how anyone got Witcher 3, AC4 and Far Cry 4 to work.

Note that passive TV's line-interlaced format is similar to TB format, with respect to stereo baseline (non)compression.
