Asus ROG Swift PG278Q vs. Acer XB280HK - exclusively for 3D Vision - Which one?

I definitely need your help now. Now that I know 1440p in 3D Vision is absolutely possible my next monitor will be one of those two mentioned above.
Keeping in mind that the monitor will be bought exclusively for 3D vision I would like to know which one I should get.
Any advice?

Research is the problem in this case. While you can find some comparisons of those two monitors they are never compared from a 3D vision viewpoint so I hoped someone could share his thoughts.

It's kinda hard to recommend a monitor to you not knowing what you know.
You have not mentioned what GPU you have or if you have a SLI setup. People are reporting issues with SLI 970's and the PG278Q. Do you have a 970? or what.........SLI or what..........How's the rest of the rig???
It's also kinda funny that you ask about surround and then say you tried it and hated it due to the fact that monitors have bezels. They still do.

Do you have any use for G_sync, because it "Does Not" work with 3D Vision. But of course this isn't even a factor, because money isn't an issue. So a few hundred more for a GSync feature that you'll never use is frivolous.
Since money is not an issue, buy 3 of the Acer XB280HK and let us know how they work out for you, since no one here has one or three. Of course there are plenty of threads discussing the PG278Q, have you read any of them?

Yes the bezels really took me out of the immersion and after long testing sessions always switching between my Sony HMZ and the Surround setup I found the HMZ to be way more immersive even compared to those 3 x 27" displays in surround...

there was always one aspect that bothered me since then and that was the "only 720p on Sony HMZ"-aspect. During the last couple days it really shocked me when I was fiddling with the game Injustice, 3D Vision and SweetFX. Normally I set everything up on my main monitor (as I said earlier the good ol' Samsung 2233rz) to avoid the hassle with constantly putting the HMZ on and off. To me it was quite shocking that even on this 5 year old monitor the overall 3D image quality was way more appealing to me than the 720p-HMZ 3D-image. Don't get me wrong, I still love the HMZ for its immersion factor but the difference in overall 3D quality really bothered me. So that led me to think again about a really good 3D monitor (wanted to switch the old 2233rz anyway). So Surround came to my mind again thinking that 3D Vision is still limited to 1080p no matter what resolution the monitor is capable of.
Now that I know 1440p is possible in 3D Vision I am tending to one 1440p monitor instead of 3 1080p monitors in Surround (would even nullify my "bezel-problem").
What really bothers me now is the question if I can run 1440p in 3D vision with my setup. Currently i am still using my GTX-690 and this one was declared as being sufficient for even powering a 3x1080p Surround Setup. My tests with Surround 2 years ago proved this assumption to be true.
Now here's the point where i may be totally wrong and I would really appreciate some insight on this: even considering that games nowadays are much more demanding than 2 years ago shouldn't I be able to run 1440p in 3D Vision (of course no Ultra settings) with my GTX-690 (having in mind that the GTX-690 could handle the 5760 x 1080 in 3D Vision Surround back then)!?
After considering what I said would you say I could do 3D Vision in 1440p (no need for Ultra or very high settings) or would a 3x1080p Surround Setup (again no Ultra or very high settings) be the better choice?

First, both monitors only have a display port input. I'd assume you 690 has one.
The ASUS PG278Q is 2560 x 1440 with an external power brick. (some people prefer external)
The Acer XB280HK is 3840 x 2160 with an internal power supply.
The Acer would be great for 2D gaming and watching movies at 4K.
Gaming at 4K can be a problem in some games because text and UIs become tiny and are hard to read.
1920x1080 or 2560 x 1440 might not look good on a 3840 x 2160 monitor. I know on my cheap 4K Seiki TV they do not, but being a cheapo 2D model it's to be expected. But will those resolutions look good on the Acer? Does it have built in upscaling?
A 4K screen = 4 x 1080 screens. So you can have a game in one corner, a walkthrough open in another, plus Netfix playing and the baby monitor in the other so the wife doesn't yell at you for not watching the kid, all in 1080p.
If you tried surround and didn't like it, no sense in discussing it. The bezels never bothered me, but I've only done it in 2D via Eyefinity.

There's also several other monitors being released that "might" be 3D Vision compatible. 144 Hz ISP panel with or without G-Sync. Plus a 144Hz 21:9 monitor.

Thanks alot for your support D-Man. That pretty much confirms my assumption that the Asus Rog Swift would be the better choice since it sports a native 1440p resolution while the native resolution of the Acer is even higher so its performance in 1440p may be questionable.
Earlier you asked if I am aware that I won't benefit from G-Sync when using the monitor strictly for 3D vision (meaning I have to fork out a lot of money for a feature that I even won't be able to use). The answer is yes, I am ware of it but honestly beside the Acer UHD monitor I didn't find any other alternatives when it comes to 3D Vision in 1440p. Those 2 monitors are the only ones I found that feature a resolution of 1440p while also supporting 3D Vision. If you know of any other 1440p monitor that also supports 3D Vision P-L-E-A-S-E let me know! (Otherwise I will order the Asus tomorrow)

I'd suggest reading the forum posts here about the Swift. As near as anyone can tell, the Swift breaks SLI. No driver+Swift works in SLI.
Assuming that's true for you, that means you'd be running 1440p with a single 680 instead, because the 690 requires SLI to work.
Another factor to consider is your VRAM on your 690. Is it 4G per side, 8G total? Or the more common 2G per side, 4G total?
If it's 2G (mirrored for SLI), that's on the low side going forward. Newer games are already pushing past 3G, so you might have to turn down more than you'd want. 3D and the higher resolution also eat more VRAM. So, it's something consider.

So somehow I came to the conclusion that he must also run an SLI-Setup if he is able to run 1440p 3D Vision like a charme.

Just found out that the 1440p Acer Predator (XB280HK) is 60Hz only. Only the 27" Full HD Predators (XB270HA/XB270HB) are 144Hz/3D Vision capable!
So I am pretty much left with...no options for 1440p 3D Vision :-(
I tell you all different way. If you can sacrifice that 690 and go for single 980 then choose ROG Swift because of one thing - the quality of 3D ! This was the most impressive thing I`ve seen since I went down from 3D Surround (nothing will beat that btw:).
That higher resolution makes picture so clear and details, textures so vivid then you will be wondering how anybody can even play on lower Res\Quality then this. Greater field of view combined with this sharper picture makes you want to sit even closer to the screen so you can get better immersion!
I still keep my Swift hoping for gtx980ti to kick in with some good power boost so I can run Witcher 3 on this beast.

Nvidia would not certify a 3D Vision monitor @30Hz per eye nor is there the bandwidth to push4K stereo gaming in a frame sequential or frame packing format @120Hz.
Max resolution would be for 2D gaming.
3840x2160@60= a pixel clock of 533.28
2560x1440@120= 497.76 <-----------<<<<< well within the 60Hz limit at 4K
Using your math, my projector that can do 1920x1080@60hz "at max resolution" for 2D gaming couldn't possibly do 1280x720@120Hz 3D gaming.....oh wait....it can!

Using your math, my projector that can do 1920x1080@60hz "at max resolution" for 2D gaming couldn't possibly do 1280x720@120Hz 3D gaming.....oh wait....it can!
