Good points about the CPU. Sounds reasonable I guess.

Should be interesting to do some test on that theory. If one could find a way to monitor CPU load from within a fullscreen game, that could give some hint to if the theory has any substance or not. I would expect in that case that the CPU load would shoot sky high when enabling stereo and probably stay at or close to 100% when running in stereo.

Does anyone know of a way to do this test? Any tools of some kind?

I´m actually suggesting the opposite, I´m rather confident that the P4 3.0 isn´t the problem here. I should know because I´m running one myself. ;-)

Is your game game working OK, except for the spa track??

And the fact that the AA/AF settings doesn't impact materially on the performance. That would imply that there infact aren´t any bottlenecks of that kind.

I´m running the GTR2 demo. Work lika a charm after having re-assigned the stereo activator keys (default CTRL-T) since it conflicting with the time compression utility in GTR2.

Interesting reading this.

I to am experiencing v bad fps with GTR2, I have rfactor and that plays smooth with everything turned up. My question would be do you disable stereo sound in your dxdiag options or is there another way?

If you mean to suggest that I do not know, because I'm not running one in my main rig, then you are mistaken. I go through alot of builds and I have experienced the difference better CPUs make first hand. The P4 3.0 [i]is[/i] a bottle-neck performance-wise in any reasonably modern gaming system (i.e. 6600GT and above). As I said previously though, the performance may be perfectly acceptable to you but if you had a better chip you would see substantial gains, particularly in those areas where the frame rate dips.

Not to say that there isn't a problem with the 9x series drivers though. If it's the same games performing alot worse, such as the Doom 3 engine ones that seemed to be fine in drivers past, then yes, it seems to be a bug in the drivers. I thought the comments were about stereo gaming in general, hence my original post.

When I had windows xp pro when I played online I had 50-60 fps now what I have vista and the newest nvidia drivers I get 4-15 fps. is there a program I can test my FPS when not online. Is the 7950gx2 not compatible with vista in the area of fps with online games, I have read many posts on gaming websites that many gamers are experiencing this downgrade in fps to the point where online games are unplayable.

If you run FRAPS when you play a game, it will give you a frame readout. If you are playing games that use the UT engine (excluding Rainbow Six Vegas), typing "stat fps" in the console will bring up your live FPS.

Although I haven't investigated first hand, I have always assumed that it was because stereo was forcing hardware calculations into software hence the varying degree of slowdowns in different games. It was backed up by the fact that older games not using special effects too much had a very good frame rate when stereo was toggled.

Of course, this observation does not apply to the doom engine games.

Maybe the stereo driver has become such a low priority and strain to produce support for every card that the driver implements stereo for the lowest common denominator ie uses the same code for all cards, high end and lowest end. This is just conjecture, but it will be interesting to guage the percetage difference on a selection of games being run on high end, medium end, and low end cards.
