2017 does not appear to be bringing much hope for us 3D enthusiasts. Beyond HMDs, are ANY new devices/products supporting 3D viewing? It appears that all TV manufacturers may have stopped supporting 3D this year, so what new 3D displays are left? I am seriously considering buying a duplicate of my current display as a future backup...
How will new people be able to join this unique community and experience its shaderhackers' world-class 3D gaming mods? Perhaps only through some type of limited HMD (like Rift or Vive) 3Dmigoto interface - even though it would be inferior to having a physical 3D monitor?
Although, VR does not appear to have much broader adoption, yet (see https://www.cnet.com/news/vr-disappoints-at-ces-2017-lenovo-oculus-htc/).

They don't... 3D is Dead IMO and VR was dead on release date... But don't take my word. Time will tell. But currently 3D is DEAD and I have ZERO interest in pursuing this anymore (like many others)...
The moment manufacturers stop producing "that thing" is named "legacy"... And only "collectors" might be interested in it ;)

There was Stereo3D before 3D Vision. ELSA Revelators, EDimensional, TriDef, iZ3D, all had their own drivers, not just nVidia.
Although there is nothing new, Stereo3D is still stronger than in the past.
On the horizon, we have HDMI 2.1 which promises 8K@60Hz, 4K@120Hz all with HDR. This means we can all inf modify 4K displays to work with nVidia 3D Play.
Although nVidia are not actively promoting 3D Vision, they are still supporting it in the form of new drivers in every GeForce driver release, and numerous bug fixes.
If you look at the 3D Vision bug thread, most of them have been fixed by nVidia recently (they have been scored out and are in grey). One complex bug which I reported has already been assigned to a developer at nvidia to fix. 3D Vision is certainly still being supported, even if not actively.
Although the future might not be bright, it's not dark either. It continues to be a cloudy day but a day non the less for StereoScopic 3D.
As for VR, there are 700 VR games coming out in 2017 alone:

@helifax, if you want to go mate, we will all miss you. I hope you won't. I have just finished playing SOMA with your wrapper, and I thanked you in the SOMA thread. On these forums, you, bo3b, DarkStarSword and others, are all superstars!

Maybe after Avatar 2 3D will reborn: http://www.cinemablend.com/news/1579799/avatar-sequels-could-have-3d-without-glasses-james-cameron-is-working-on-it
Im bussy with a lot of the older games. Particularly Half Life 2: Episode 1
There was one area where I had to turn off 3d Vision to be able to see what the hell was going on. And I thought to myself "WhOW! how did I ever enjoy gaming this way?". Cant see how I would ever be able to move back to this. It would be like waking up from one of those good dreams you get every once in a while and you so badly want to go back to sleep to see what happens next. But you just cant. So you go through the day still wondering what might have happen. Like the end of Matrix Revolutions where the action was getting you so hyped and the next thing you see "Too be concluded" and you hear the final movie is already made but you have to wait another year!!!!! Same shit with the Hobbit. Did they want to kill us?? Or something.. After the "To be continued" at the end of the first Hobbit movie you couldve heard half the people in the cinema shout out with disappointment. One guy even went to take a dump right infront of the movie screen!! Okay, maybe not really. But I couldve sworn i saw one guy who actually wanted to!
If nVidia completely drops the ball on 3d Vision I will fly my ass all the way to their head office and take a dump infront of their main entrance every day for a whole year!

I know what you mean :)
I'm playin' Witcher 3 (again), and still I'm amazed by the beautifull scenaries, I litterally scream WAUUU every time I round a corner :)
I don't wan't to play this game with a helmet or anything else, I just wan't to enjoy it on my screen again and again !!
And yes koelermeester@ What a great pleasure to play old and otherwise outdated games in 3D, it really brings them back to life again....

Win7 64bit Pro
CPU: 4790K 4.8 GHZ
GPU: Aurus 1080 TI 2.08 GHZ - 100% Watercooled !
Monitor: Asus PG278QR
And lots of ram and HD's ;)
I posted this in another thread, but at CES Nvidia announced 4K 120Hz G-Sync monitors.
It's very possible that 3D might work on these.
http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/g-sync-hdr-monitors-announced-at-ces-2017.html
The new Asus PG258Q is the new 240hz monitor that is 3D vision certified. It was just featured this week at CES. If you pull up the Linus tech tips CES review on youtube you will clearly see the 3D vision lable on the stand.
https://rog.asus.com/articles/gaming-monitors/rog-swift-pg258q/
The problem us 3D vision users have is that the way 3D vision inversion works is only compatible with verticle pattern of TN pannels. With things moving to IPS, Q dot, OLED, they are just flat out not compatible with the way 3D vision works. And with VR on the rise that takes any attention away from developing 3D monitors for our niche community
