I recently moved from trying to project to the 110" screen which I had been doing for a long time and attempt to get some extra lumens.
First go was projecting onto a bit of white cardboard I found laying around and moved the projector really close, it looked amazing.
There was big improvement viewing in 3D was getting heaps more light.
I then bought a piece of that foam cardboard that has a layer of foam in between it, sort a smooth surface on each side and foam in the middle.
I got that in a really light grey colour and it gives even better results. $10.00, can imagine maybe coating it like Tritosine talks to get even better results. Eyeing off goo 3D paint I seen on their site.
I know it's silly and the projector is meant for big viewing but this gives better results then the 3D TV's and if you stick to that sort of size you'll get excellent light output.
Colours and Blacks and are better and 3D is heaps easier on the eyes for me, looks like a hole in the wall in 3D effect to me.
This picture is shot with my phone camera and through the right eye lens on the nvidia shutter glasses while shuttering, it's not the best quality camera to take a picture with but it shows the foam cardboard being projected onto.

I just wonder what other cheap stuff I could use to get it even better, I held up a black mousepad and I want to try black cardboard next as it could give best blacks.
I could still see everything all good even though it was projecting onto black.

Blacks won't be better if you use smaller screen, but what happens is that you perceive it better because of the extra brightness.
Better blacks requires better on-off contrast spec, thats not so good on these DLP pj's cause theres light bleedthru, projector innards could be stuffed with better light blocking/dampening, that'd give better blacks. It can be done but its hard, and guess it 'd void warranty.
Another way is using an iris inside before the lense . Sent you pm btw, Im not so sure about this stuff, yet to try it, will do it in weeks though. Iris without *very* high gain screen won't work , because the 120hz brightness is quite low to begin with.

Yep got your PM thanks man, I'll be interested to see how the iris works out for you but don't think it's for me.
My epson 1080P projector has a mechanical iris.
Im still pretty impressed in the gains I got from a simple idea, mind you I drop from 110" down to a 40 or so inch bit of cardboard :)
That toy story scene is great to view because it has white, black and every colour of the rainbow in it.
My crappy picture doesn't do it justice to what I see in real life.
what are you using now for 3D display ?[/quote]
Hey mate hows things.
You own the Samsung plasma (old school checkerboard) 3D tv too don't you?
I got a Optoma HD66 back in April and mainly have been using that for 3D.
I still own the 2233RZ and Samsung PS50B450 as well.
Recently I had to get a repair on the HD66 so was playing around with the Plasma again whilst it was being fixed.
The latest 3D blurays looked sensational on the Plasma so I am still happy I bought it, didn't see any ghosting.
I have been to demos of the latest Samsung and Sony 3D screens and I can say the checkerboard 3D of my plasma still looks every bit as good as the new 1080p 3D tv's
I struggled with ghosting in gaming on it, but I did get it to a point ages ago which I was quite content with.
One day I will try different shutter glasses on it too which I'm sure will help and possibly other drivers besides Nvidia's in a gaming perspective for ghosting issues.
