A new experiment
I guess it was a quiet day today, so I decided to run a little experiment on my PC. I dug out my old copy of Flight Sim X, just wanting to test what it was like in 3D vision. Pretty good, apart from a few misplaced lights.
Next I downloaded some Web cam/head tracking software. Also a nice little program that updates FSX textures with photos from Virtual Earth (or Bing Maps, or whatever MS are calling it these days). I had to make a little tracking triangle to stick to the front of my baseball cap, so the head tracking can focus. After setting up and linking everything together, I took a nice flight over my house and my city.
The effect is really amazing, especially with the hi-res 3D cabin in FSX. Still need to do a little fine tuning with the settings, it doesn't quite feel right yet, head movement is a bit laggy. Also it is very heavy on my average PC.
But I definitely recommend giving it a shot if you have a copy of FSX. Just try not to get airsick.
