A bit specific - but nothing ventured...:
My setup has always worked great in 3D stereo - 5950ultra & ED glasses. But recently I changed the mobo to one with Sis7012-Cmedia9739 audio, which does 5.1 sound. As stereo shutter glasses are all about immersion having surround sound too seems logical. But when the audio-out is set to anything other than 2-speakers I get an annoying flickering band, about a cm deep, at the top of the screen in some games like UT2004 and NFSMW- kind of looks like a video tape with a tracking problem!
There are no resouce conflicts between the GPU and audio, so it puzzles me why this is happening. I Have installed latest mobo / audio drivers...
Any ideas?

surround-sound and vr is ok (i use Audigy 2 ZS)...
I tested my onboard-sound as well, with same problems -> low FPS, realy bad sound-quality and flickering in VR-Mode...

Thanks Hugo - so what you're saying is the on-board audio is using too many resources...
Only strange thing is, I do not suffer any drop in frame rate using 5.1 sound - just the problem I posted about. Indeed the Cmedia audio chips are meant to be 'proper' hardware audio rather than software-dependant.
Oh well back to 2 speakers :-(
