Switching Monitor back to normal doesn't work for many games
Since a few days I am running 3D Vision, utilizing a ACER HN274H monitor with built in IR-Emitter.

While trying out most of the games I played over the past years, I noted that sometimes the monitor won't switch back from 100% brightness to the sub 10% value I configured for "normal" use. I contacted ACER support about this problem, but according to them it's the Nvidia driver's/controller's duty to control the monitor in this regard.

After further testing I found out that it depends on the game if switching back to normal happens or not:

Game | Switches back
--------------------------------------------
Assassin's Creed | no
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood | yes
Tomb Raider Underworld | no
Mass Effect (1) | yes
Mass Effect 2 | yes
Batman Arkham Asylum | yes
Dead Space 2 | no
The Witcher 2 | no

As can be seen, it's no exception that switching back doesn't work properly. Interestingly the shutter glasses seem to get deactivated all the time.

Now I would like to hear from others who use such a monitor with integrated IR-Emitter, if for them any of the listed "no switching back"-games behaves different. Which would mean that their monitor DOES switch from 100% brightness back to whatever value they have configured.

I've added Mass Effect (1) to above list, for which the switching works as intended.

I am a little surprised that no one has contributed yet about his experiences regarding the no-switching-back issue... Surely the ACER HN274H is not widely-spread. But as of now it seems this problem is NOT related to this model (or to my monitor) specifically. It seems to be an issue with Nvidia drivers/software. Or why would my monitor show this strange behavior with some games and not with others (repeatable)?

So, if someone owns a 3D Vision monitor with built-in IR-Emitter, I would appreciate if he/she checked with his/her games (or even one of the apparently problematic ones listed above) how they behave. Does switching back brightness (and contrast, color-settings) from 100% to a lower value (if configured for "normal" use) happen with all games?

Also it would of course be interesting to hear from someone connected with Nvidia if it is actually possible that this problem is related to their drivers/software...

I have noticed it as well from time to time. I have not tried to correlate it to specific games but I will in the future. The acer actually goes through so many blinkings and screen blanks during most game startups I usually leave 3d off until I get into the game. The handshaking seems very unstable so I am not suprisec something gets left switched incorrectly after exit. My older Samsung 3d never was so glitchy. All said I love the 3d once it turns on.

I'm having a similar problem with my projector. After gaming or watching movies in 3D when I exit and my PJ stays at 120hz. What I do is open up the Nvidia control panel, go to the "Set up stereoscopic 3D" tab and hit apply, this will return you to your 2D setting provided you do not have the run at all times option selected.

Thank you both for contributing your experiences.

@Edo1946: Yes, it would be interesting to know if this issue is correlated to certain games, as in my case, or occurs randomly. According to my observations, that this problem is consistently related to some games only, I would conclude it seems not to be a matter of unstable handshaking...

@D-Man11: Well, I guess the source of your problem might be the same as for the non-switching-back issue I have.

Now the question really is if these things could be easily rectified by future (bug-fixed) versions of Nvidia's 3D driver and/or 3D-Vision Controller. Or if it's rather a matter of buggy firmware on several hardware-products... ?
While firmware-bugs are ubiquitous without doubt, for the reasons stated previously I tend to believe the cause might be Nvidia's software.

well, for me it sometimes takes a considerable amount of time to switch back, up to 10 minutes or more. But so far it always switched back eventually...

I actually thing that this is intentionally.

So purchased the HN274H. 2 things:

1. Gets hung when exiting 3D programs (running SLI)

2. Automatically stuck in 3D mode when returning from sleep (latest Nvidia beta driver)

What is everyone's work around to get it unstuck aside from restarting the computer?

I usually just wait it out until it switches back to low brightness.. oh...and put on sunglasses

It doesn't. It'll sit in 3D mode all day. Switched back to the stable drivers. Going to see if the sleep bug persists.

this happens to all 3d vision ready displays with a brightness handshake through DVI
all in all, if a game doesnt perfectly destroy the d3d device and unload d3d, the brightness will stay
what i do is, i just run the spinning nvidia logo test, as that unloads perfectly, so after you exit it, your brightness will return back to 2d mode

For a 3D/2D-mode "reset" you may change the refresh-rate from/to 120/110/100 Hz (whatever actually changes it) within Nvidia control panel (other things like resolution probably will work too, but...).

I have the same issue: just open IE 9 & close it - seems to destroy or refresh the 3d vision session.
