Help needed connecting 3D vision to home theater receiver

I've read quite a few of the similar threads and tried a couple remedies, but nothing seems to work. I've spent years installing home theaters but am not as tech savvy on the computer side of things so I'm hoping someone here can help.
I'm attempting to run 3D Vision from my Dell XPS 17 laptop to my projector (Optoma HD66) through an Onkyo TX-NR509 receiver. I've seen where there are a lot of issues when doing this, but it sounds like the problem is always that people aren't getting any picture at all when trying this. I have no problem getting the picture (set at 720p/120hz) from the laptop to the projector, the problem comes when I try to watch something in 3D; As soon as it switches over, the IR emitter will never turn on. Is this the same problem everyone else has?
I can hook the laptop up directly to the projector and it will work fine but nothing I have tried will get the emitter working when routed through the receiver. I've tried a number of solutions including upgrading the receiver (originally had a TX-SR608) and purchasing a separate 3d vision IR emitter. I've also tried the EDID method posted in a couple threads but that didn't help (very possible I didn't do that right). Is it possible I need new HDMI cables?
Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm very eager to get this working but am almost at the point where I am just going to buy a new 3D Blu Ray player, Optoma 3D-XL, and extra glasses.

I'm pretty sure that the emitter will only function when the projector is connected to the VGA connection. Which blows because you will not be able to use the Nvidia glasses for 3D Blu-ray playback due to HDCP compliance, unless you use software/hardware to circumvent HDCP.
Is your projector even 3D capable? Earlier releases of those models were not and need an updated firmware.

I'm pretty sure that the emitter will only function when the projector is connected to the VGA connection. Which blows because you will not be able to use the Nvidia glasses for 3D Blu-ray playback due to HDCP compliance, unless you use software/hardware to circumvent HDCP.
Also are you sure your laptop is 3DVision certified, is it the XPS 17 L702x model? see the supported list here http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-system-requirements.html
Yes, it is the l702x and I can view 3D Blu Rays when the laptop is connected directly to the projector via HDMI. The problem occurs when I route it through the receiver. I can still view the movie, but the emitter will not turn on, thus, no 3D.

Well if it's working without the receiver connected inbetween, then it must be a handshake issue. When you connect with the receiver in-line, is the <""Nvidia logo""> showing up in the Nvidia control panel,under the set up stereoscopic 3D tab? If not try right clicking the desktop, screen resolution and then detect. Still not showing up? Reset the receiver? Upgrade the receiver firmware? You can try hotplugging (at your own risk). Call Onkyo support perhaps? Or maybe the Gefen HDMI Detective may solve your problems?

Have your display and receivers inf./EDID files ready to post for possible editing. Before posting, read the start of the of the sister thread for AMD cards , "EDID Overrides to solve bitstreaming issues for ATI 5xxx's"

I've tried the EDID Override method to no avail. It could very likely be that I did not try it correctly, but I might give it another go. I've purchased the Gefen HDMI Detective in hopes that this will fix the issue. I'm waiting till I receive it tomorrow before I try anything else....just trying to avoid as many headaches as possible.

Yah, HDCP is a pain in the a$$. The Gefen should work no problem, just be sure to follow the correct steps, so that it does indeed store the EDID of the Display.

I mentioned it a few posts up, he said it did not work. But also stated he may have done it wrong.
Who knows, he may be using a spoofed display EDID, and that could be causing problems. Especially if the CEA extension block is missing, as far as I know it contains the additional information for receiver support. (I may very well be wrong)

yes the EDID .inf does the same thing, but you need to append the extension block of the receivers EDID to the TV Edid in order to get multi-channel sound. Otherwise, your stuck with stereo. With the Gefen you are also stuck with stereo sound (because of the tV's edid) unless you are using an add-on soundcard which can overide all that.

Check out this thread of how to create a custom .inf file to allow this to work. You have to follow this to the letter but it does work.

I believe we as consumers shouldn't have to go through these types of loops to get our kit to work.

So wouldn't the EDID method work as well? Isn't that basically what the Gefen is doing?
