Any reason the Optoma EH500 couldn't do 1080p 60hz 3D over displayport?
  1 / 5
I've tried to search the web for an answer and am on the verge of being a $1,500 guinea pig. I'm thinking that with an Asus Vg248QE EDID override, which does 120hz 3D over displayport, I could get the projector to do the same. Any reason not to try this, does anyone know that this won't work for one reason or another? It's the cheapest 1080p projector I could find that has displayport, the specs are pretty nice though.

No idea what display you are talking about but there is no projector @ 1500 that supports 1080p @ 60hz[3D] on displayport. Just in case your going in a wierd direction.... You can't force a 120hz non-3d display to 60fps 3d. You can't force a 24hz display to 60fps 3D. You certainly can't force a 60hz display to 60hz [3D]. If edid overrides were the solution all 120HZ would support 3D. Don't do it.

It has a displayport, supports 120hz and in the user manual it states that you can turn on and of frame sequential 3D manually. This sounds similar to my old Samsung S27A750D. In order to get it to work with 3D vision, I used an Acer Edid and was able to turn on frame sequential manually. Worked perfectly. I seems like this projector would be capable of the same from what I've read thus far.

Supports all HDMI 1.4a mandatory 3D format Uses a DLP chipset. The "gold standard" for projectors. Its a part of the DLP chipset. You want to do something it doesn't know how to. Your 3D monitor which is 120fps : 60fps[3D] can just as easily be a different 120fps : 60fps[3D]. It can't do 120fps[3D]. Which is the same thing you want to do with that projector.

In the user manual it states that 3D auto detect only works with HDMI 1.4a but other 3D modes may be used with other inputs, frame sequential being one. I admit, I really know what all is involved with processing the 3D, so you may be right. It just seems that if you can get the 3D signal to the projecot, then have the ability to turn on frame sqequential manually, it might work? That's how it work with my Samsung 3D monitor, only problem was that eyes were swapped sometimes. Maybe I'm just dying for a 1080p 60hz 3D projector and want to believe.

I just opened the manual but I am not sure why you think it does 1080p@120hz but its not there. It only does that @ 720p/800p. Could be wrong, doesnt matter regardless.

Amazon's site states, 120hz or 144hz compatibility but it sounds like a no go anyhow. Thanks for saving me the time of ordering it, experimenting, failing, and sending it back to amazon. I guess if there were an affordable, 1080p 60hz, 3D projector out there someone would have stumbled onto it by now.

My friend has this projector and it indeed does work for 1080p 60hz. Just gotta have a 3D visikn kit. Use an inf override from any 120hz monitor with a displayport, I think he used an asus. Only small annoyance is the you must activate 3D on the projector, it doesn't turn on automatically.

I was 95% mentally prepared to purchase the Benq W1070 next week. Then I read this!
My friend has this projector and it indeed does work for 1080p 60hz. Just gotta have a 3D visikn kit. Use an inf override from any 120hz monitor with a displayport, I think he used an asus.
This is a huge find if true. I looked through the manual and it seems plausible. Everywhere I've looked says frame sequential only works up to 720p, but I could see how this might not apply if we're using an EDID override. Displayport has the bandwidth, and the projector has to display 1080x1920 pixels at 120hz even with a 720p signal, so it's just a question of if it can be force-fed the signal. I would ask Triclops, is your friend absolutely sure it's displaying a 1080p signal, and not just 720p? Some other questions are about the picture quality. It's rated for 4700 lumens. Part of that is probably simply due to a more powerful lamp. The projector uses 380 watts in bright mode, versus the Acer H5360's 244 watts. The rest is probably due to the color wheel, which is probably designed to sacrifice color brightness for white brightness (and therefore a high lumen rating). However, typically these white segments are shut off or used for DLP-link flash in 3D mode. It's hard to say how good or how bright it will be in 3D mode. I would guess it looks at least decent. On the other hand, this might not be a good projector for 2D content.

1080p @ 60HZ [3D] correct? Not 1080p @ 30hz [3D] right? Can you ask your friend to come on here and give more information. No offense but I am modder/support guy. I have tons of people tell me they tried it, there sure, they read directions, etc. But alot of time its really that they want someone to figure it out for them. I just want to know if this is sincere and not someone trying to get someone to jump hurdles so they can see the results. If its true I would greatly appreciate information since it would interest me personally. Maybe he knows me from Helixmod site, if he does tell him I'd be in his debt since I would like to upgrade.

I really hope this works as you say, Tricops. Seems like it would. It might be worth a purchase from Amazon just to test it out. I'll only be out $30 in shipping to return it, if it doesn't. If I decide to do so, I will definitely let everyone know my results.

I decided against my test run. I already have a Samsung 55ES7500 3DTV that cost me around $1200 to purchase, couldn't rationalize spending more than that on a projector that will be used for gaming only. If the EH500 lowers to around $1000, I'll give it a test run. For now I've got an Optoma HD66 and am thinking of going for a Benq w1070 as an upgrade when it goes on sale again at around $700.

Unusual I come across a post that isn't ridiculously old, but... It just so happens I bought an eh500 for my office and set it up at my house temporarily to play with it... So far, 3d vision doesn't even work with the 3d vision emitter (3d play seems to disable the nvidia emitter, and the projector doesn't have an emitter built in, just the vesa out... Why nvidia decided it would be prudent to disable their own emitter, even if it is hooked up to the vesa out of the projector, I don't know... but regardles...) I plan on using an EDID override to test frame sequential, during which I will answer your questions for real (as opposed to "this friend of a friend said he swung a magic wand and it magically projected 3D @ 60hz...) the only problem is currently I am fresh out of display port cables. I do have one at the office I will bring home tomorrow, just have to verify its version (first rendition of display port did not support 1080P 120hz). Otherwise, I will have to order one as you can't seem to find them in stores... I have a GTX 780Ti which has display port out, so if everything goes well, I will post my results. Now I just need to find a display to use as an EDID override, will try the display listed above first.
