3D 120 Hz Gaming on 3 Monitors
  1 / 2
I was asked to put together a gaming build for a business associate (I do his AutoCAD boxes for his engineering business) and put together a 670 SLI build w/ Asus 27" 120hz Monitor and 3D Glasses. He then asked about a 3 monitor set up and I came back with a 3 monitor 60Hz build as I told him three $580 120 Hz monitors was a bit extreme .... yeah ... you guessed it .... now he wants a three monitor setup as he has an opportunity to score several of the new Asus 144Hz models at a price that's a steal. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313 Yes, I have showed him the reviews :) I have never done a 3 monitor 120 / 144 hz build so I'm venturing in unknown territory. Questions: 1. Where do ya find GFX card reviews / benchmarks for 5760 x 1080 @ 120 hz so as to determine expectations ?. I can see here for example that BAC gets 49 fps at 5750 x 1080 w/ very high 4x AA but that is at 60Hz.....how does one figure what ya gonna get in 3D mode at 120/144Hz ? http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/2725/9/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-plus-sli-and-3-way-sli-batman-arkham-city 2. Again, not having ever gone down this 3D, 3 Monitor path, I'm not in a position to judge his Monitor choice and it's not as yet listed here so as to determine compatibility. Specs do indicate only 3D vision and LightBoost compatibility (no mention of HDMI 3D and BR 3D support) ..... my only opinion so far is that it's not a "great" monitor but does provide pretty good bang for the buck. Have not found any reviews tho of usage in a 3 monitor setup. 3. My 16 year old manages to handle dealing with nVidia control panel settings from game to game but he just finished building his 2nd PC (his 4th to date ... 1st 2 I built) but he has two older brothers and Dad to call upon when needed. This colleague lives 50 miles from me, is not computer savvy and this will be his kids 1st "gaming PC". I don't play a lot of games (played Batman AA and AC) so I don't run into a lot of problems going from game to game and don't have the experience to draw upon to troubleshoot a multitude of 3D games. With 2 teenagers in his house, I'm concerned that I'll be spending many hours as "Tech Support". Just how much fiddling do you "regular gamers" find yaselves wrestling with in this regard ?

I'd just give the simplest answer here, If you want to go 3D Vision Surround gaming, you must have three exact same 120hz Monitors, check your legit options: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-displays.html I'm currently using 670 4gb SLI, with three BenQ XL2420T's. DVI-D cables are what you need for 3D Surround gaming. other sort of triple monitor 3D gaming options...maybe someone more tech savvy than I'm would chip in...

It doesn't sound like this is a that great a route to take, I don't know if you yourself use 3D, but if you do you know that you usually spend more time setting games up to work in 3D than playing them. But if you want to go through with it, put simply it will need alot of GPU power at that resolution. SLI 670's fit the bill, probably need 4GB versions at that resolution, I don't think 3-way SLI works in 3D, theres plenty of arguing over it. The monitor is good for 3D and not much else, at least not in my opinion. If he/you decides not go go for a 3D setup there is no reason to go with it.

I'm running 3 27" ASUS 3D monitors with 3D Vision Surround and it works pretty well with most all games. You may need Widescreen Fixer for some games (like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2), but that's free and easily usable. I am also running two 660 ti's in SLI and it doesn't really matter on your quality settings, but don't go above 2x AA because you really won't need it (run three monitors with 3D and you'll see why). The 3D experience is unbelievable on some games and mediocre on others. Trine 2 has been the the simplest, but coolest experience so far. iRacing works flawlessly if you're into racing games. Adjust your bevels and you won't notice them at all while playing. Grab the latest drivers and enjoy some older games as well. It's crazy how well it works once you have it set up right. Dirt 3 is way more fun. You'll see the games that suck with it right away. Three monitors is way better than the one 3D I had, but 3 3D monitors is freaking awesome. Beats any 3D movie you've ever seen.

So not true cooky. There are loads of games that work out of the box in 3d surround. The ones that do require a fix is as hard as downloading a file and putting it in the game directory. Hands down the my best gaming experiences have been when I have been playing in 3d surround. Games like Max Payne 3 and the Trines are mind blowing and take zero effort to setup. I think cooks is just relaying someone else's horror story. But I can assure you I have had no issues with my vg278h monitors in 3d surround.

And Google Helix 3D. He fixes any game that isn't 100% 3D awesomeness. The biggest problem you end up running into are games that don't support your ginormous 5880x1080 resolutions like mine (not the 3D part).

...and. The only headache I've had had been with ASUS and their model numbers. I have three of the same models (in the display options on the monitors themselves), but they have a different model ID in Windows. I have a driver (or can show you a different way to rename your driver) to make the models work together flawlessly (it ate about 7 hours of my life finding out how and have been posting on forums everywhere).

I did three monitor 3D gaming awhile back, and it was hit or miss for games that would work properly. When they work, it is really terrific. A resource I can suggest as reliable is the Wide Screen Gaming Forum. Here is their example list for 2012 games: http://www.wsgf.org/mgl/releases/2012 That is the first step for having it work properly with 3 screens. Adding 3D on top of that trims the list a bit more of course.

to enjoy 3D Surround gaming, you need games that work in triple monitors and 3D vision at the same time. few games meet this requirement out of the box; oftentime you rely on good gaming community to make games work (Helix, eqzitara and co., and good people from Widescreen forum, Hyden and Helifax...). Vram becomes more important than any other gaming solution; I started with 580 3G SLI, and now 670 4G. for me personally, the best way of gaming is 3D Surround, then 2D surround, then 1080p 3D vision or 720p projector 3D (720p wins in rare cases such as Tomb Raider 2013 which delivers decent image quality at that low a resolution. I don't have chance to test out 1080p projector). after getting used to triple screens, 6100x1080 or 5760x1080 gaming, it's very hard for me to get back to single screen or lower resolutions.

Yes, the new Asus is very similar to the BenQ XL2411T..... well experienced with the cable requirements. had long running argument with son when he moved his computer and he lost 3D capability. Told him that he prolly used wrong DVD cable and "must use the duallie". He said he did .... Main reason he picked it was he can get them for little more than a song. Thanks everyone for the input and the references. My goal is to pass them on, not actually use them myself cause he's calling me instead of looking them up himself. Anyone using the ASUS GTX670-DC2-4GD5 ? ASUS's DC2 line usually has good reputations; I myself prefer MSI's lighting. I think any of the 4GB version of 670 would do the job. it's your son's call heh? as for me personally, I probably won't spend a cent anymore on Nvidia's products due to their pulling plug off 3D vision support. what Nvidia have been doing for a long while now is to pimp out pricey products and let the PC gaming community take care of tech support and game fixes...just hang around here a bit, you will notice that Nvidia's official support for 3D vision is non-existent

Wish people would stop posting lies about nVidia pulling support for 3d vision and nVidia surround. With each new driver come new 3d profiles. Sure support could be better but telling porkies isn't going to help anything.
