Netflix launches 'Super HD' and 3D streaming

This is only available with certain hardware and a few ISPs atm. The hardware list includes PS3, WiiU, Windows 8, Roku, Apple TVs as well as Blu-ray players and smart TVs with 1080p support. Watch Instantly customers can see if their ISP on the list by visiting the Super HD page and, if it isn't, they're encouraged to call and ask for it. See the full story over at Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/netflix-super-hd-3d-streaming/ Even if you are using windows 8 on your 3D Vision rig, I wonder if Nvidia would allow their glasses to activate? Has anyone tried it yet either with or without Nvidia 3D Vision?

Even it's not gaming related, this is the kind of new that I want to hear, anything that makes more 3d content available to more people will help move the 3d industry forward.

Well, I found out that my ISP does not support it. I may take my 3D Vision monitor over to my cousin's house and try his ISP, but I doubt it will wprk even if his ISP supports it since the Acer GD235HZbid does not support HDMI 1.4 formats.

Well I was excited ... but neither is mine. I get connection speeds in the mid 20s, so I have the speed just not Open Connect support from my ISP. :( On a side note, it'd be nice if they added lores 3D streaming on the 3ds. I always wondered if they were going to try to do that when I found out netflix was on the 3ds.

I heard that they lifted the Open Connect restriction and 3D content is now available to all users, although I haven't had a chance to test it out myself.

Interesting. For 3D, requires 12Mb download speed. Here's a link: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/09/netflix-no-longer-blocks-best-hd-content-when-feuding-with-your-isp/

Which movie was in 3D? I can't seem to find any. Nor any with the "super HD". What i've learned about 3D movies is that it REALLY helps to use the "3D perspective" functions on the TV if you can which increases the amount of separation between the images. To give an example of the low separation in movies, Tron for example had a half inch (1.27cm) of separation at the most on a 46 or 55 inch display, i can't remember which. Backing up from the display helps only a little in that case. Contrast that with 6.25cm of separation using 3DTV Play. It would be like lowering depth to almost 1/6 of what your used to. BTW: Increasing the separation in movies to the maximum amount the "3D perspective" setting will allow still has far less than 6.5cm of separation for distant scenery. Stars and planet Earth will not even have 6.5cm of separation on my Samsung using that to its fullest with the movie Gravity. ( i test all of this on youtube with trailers as i don't own any 3D movies yet.) This makes 3D movies look "better". It still doesn't account for content which has little different in separation between the most distant objects and objects closest to you. The main effect is that it puts things in their proper position to match their FOV maing it look more realistic. IE, if Godzilla is at near screen depth on a 46" display that is 2 meters away from you, the FOV that it takes up would in real life put Godzilla at a half mile away, this also giving Godzilla's physical dimensions the size of the monitor. Pushing it out using the aforementioned setting to increase the separation, puts Godzilla at a more realistic position on the 3rd axis, more closely fitting its true size and FOV.

The Walking Dead (Season 3) showed up as Super HD on my PS3 and there was a section dedicated to 3D just like this: ... I still haven't had a chance to check anything out yet.

HD requires changing a setting in you main account online before HD is streamed to your machine, it sucks bandwidth down like theres no tomorrow, pretty much makes my connection slow as the second coming of Christ while using HD. I ended up changing it back to "average-default" 3d is locked for me as I live in Canada and my ISP does not support it, one of those or both combined made it so 3d Netflix did not work. I used "unblockus" to open the American Netflix at which point I was allowed to choose from 3d content. Seems to work well, 3d was fine although I think a physical disk of the 3d content played through my PS3 is a better image. Its nice to have a feature like this and I hope its unlocked soon for everyone .... and more content.

Im getting mixed opinions, but it seems that you need a specific device for this to work, like a PS3 and it only supports Win 8... Anyone have this working on Win 7?

I'd have to fire up the PS3 to check it out but with over 40 3Dbluerays in my collection I'm doubtful they have anything I don't already have on disk. If it is WIN8 only my passive 3D laptop is out and the 3DS seemed to be a natural for 3D streaming. (sigh)

The 3ds seems like the perfect 'fit' for 3d movies but now I'm not so sure. I'm not knocking it ... I have an XL and I really like it for what it is and what it does, but since the movies have the separation 'baked in' and they're already extremely conservative as is I'm not sure how good they'd look on such a small screen. An inch or so of separation on my 65" screen would only equal roughly .074" (1.8mm) on my XL, never mind the original 3ds. It's hard to say without actually seeing it for myself but it doesn't seem like it would be enough.
