yes they were running video demo loop just like andrew said. I don't think the glasses were broken. Thanks for the quakecon info, i'll keep that in mind.

If you couldn't see the depth, then it definitely wasn't working right. Most likely glasses not switched on, or out of charge, or not in line-of-sight of the emitter. When it's working the 3D is very obvious even at low depth settings.

Yeah, there is absolutely no mistaking if it was working. I was hesitant to make the plunge, but luckily my wife secretly ordered them otherwise I'd probably still be a doubter. The first time I experienced them was at home and it blew me away. If you are concerned that it's some gimmick, I assure you I wondered the same thing... and I also assure you it definitely IS NOT.

Last time I was at Fry's in Palo Alto, back in late November, the 3D demo computer wasn't even on, and it was inside of some protective box, not sure what was going on there. Also, there were no units in the booth, it was all back in the video card section, and some of them looked like returns.
Also, Central Computer in downtown San Francisco looked like it maybe was supposed to carry this product and have a demo, but the glasses were just sitting behind protective glass and they didn't have any units.
Marketing this product in stores must be pretty hard.

It's a shame that in order to sell 3D Vision you have to see it to believe it and allot of people won't make a purchase on blind faith. I went into it and bought it without ever seeing it and am completely blown away and so is every person who has seen it at my house. Unfortunately a looping video demo isn't going to give you even a taste to what you'll find running off your own computer. Hopefully now with 2010 being the year of 3D, we will see better demo set ups at your local retailer and even more retailers then the handful that are doing demos now.

If it didn't cost as much, I think it would sell quicker, as in, don't have to actually see it in order to give it a chance. Even if someone already has a nvidia card, and let's say, a 3D-Ready DLP display, it's still $200 for the glasses and emitter. Add in $150/pair for additional glasses, and people are going to want to try it out first.
This is a reason ATI may get the upper hand. If someone has an ATI card and a 3D-Ready DLP display, the iz3D drivers are free, so all you would need are the Bit Cauldron glasses (DLP-Link version, no emitter required). Right now, XpanD sells their DLP-Link glasses for $149, that's $50 cheaper to go the ATI route.
And no telling what the Bit Cauldron glasses will sell for. They may go for $100, you never know. Plus, with the same gear, you could even play PS3 and/or XBox360 games with the same glasses.

I can kind of see retailers not really embracing 3D, at least not in this form. Look at all of the compatibility issues that 3D Vision has with different TVs and monitors, and the more mainstream it becomes, the more people are going to simply just return product to the retailer instead of trying to work with nvidia to make it work. There's a lot of people on this forum who're used to being early adopters and put in a lot of effort to makes things work, and put up with waiting for patches, etc.

Agree that the glasses are a bit expensive. I can't image they cost much to make, and there's added value for nVidia in each pair they sell, because they tie people into having an nVidia GPU. If they were $100 I'm sure they'd sell a lot more of them.
If every screen being sold is 120 Hz in a few years time, that will make a huge difference too. One of the reasons I bought 3D vision is I already had a 120 Hz CRT, so I didn't have the added cost of buying a new screen. When most people already have a 120Hz screen, and the glasses are $100 I think you'll see a take up rate 5-10x higher than you see now.

There are 3 Fry's around Houston and the Ghetto oil rig Fry's had glasses with the glass broken and playing the video in 2D I tried using the little shuttle rig they had it hooked up to but it only had a mouse and no keyboard and couldn't get a demo of anything else running on it.
Now the other snazzy Fry's by Sugarland had the DLP screen running the movie flawlessly in a loop and a guy giving demonstrations of I think Batman or something. And they had the Samsung rig working well.
But the store that SOLD me on getting it was MicroCenter.. the guys in the game section helped me getting it to work cause it wasnt working and I was hellbent on seeing how good it was... after about 10 min we got it working and I played Battlefield 2 for like 20min and was showing it off to people coming by confused by what I was doing.... everyone seemed to like it... but I bought mine at Fry's for like $50 cheaper.

I saw a demo in the local Frys a few months ago and then I went and saw Avatar... Decided I wanted another look since I was so blown away by the movie. I work near a Micro Center so after work I went down to see if they had it. Was 215.00 but I was so hell bent on not wasting time (I bike commute 3-9am) I bought it on the spot... 'course I had it a whole week ready to be returned for a 15% restocking fee until I got wind of the work around for Samsung DLPs, but thats a different story. I'm the only hardcore dork out of all my friends (well, one other, but hes poor as hell... ha ha ha).. Everyone I show it to thinks its badass.
I really want to have them enable a 3D desktop - If at all possible :D
