Alienware AW2310 Review
  3 / 5
Does anyone know if Samsung is planning a followup to the 2233rz display? I am not sure I want a 16:9 display for my normal computing. If I could find a 1920x1200 3d display, that would be best for my use. I had hoped I would see something by either viewsonic or samsung come out as a second generation display for 3d.

Hi Guys,

I got my Alienware monitor today. This is my first time experiencing 3D vision. After reading alot of negative things online about this monitor I have to say that I am VERY impressed. The 3D vision with this monitor is better than I could have imagined. I have only tried 2 games so far and have made zero adjustments to the monitor itself.

Dragon Age is amazing in 3d. I also tried mirrors edge. I noticed the ghosting that everyone is talking about but it doesn't bother me at all. In fact the only reason I noticed it was because I have been reading these boards. I will answer any questions that any has for m regarding this monitor. In my opinion if you have the money to do it then by all means you should buy this monitor and get 3D vision. When playing Dragon Age on this monitor I feel like the monitor dissappears and I am looking out a window. The effect is that good.

HAH, I got my Alienware monitor today too! I pretty much have to second everything you say. I was a tad worried after reading the OP, but now I'm convinced he's just impossible to please.

The 3D effect is amazing. I don't have very many games to test yet (currently installing them as quick as I can!), as I just received my new computer yesterday, but my first impressions are VERY good. Like you, I havn't changed the monitor settings at all and the ghosting is VERY minimal. If I try and notice the ghosting at the top, I can. But in normal gameplay I don't notice it AT ALL.

Unfortunately I'm using a low end card because it's the only Nvidia card I have (My high end card I was using was a Radeon), so I have to turn graphics down slightly to ensure good FPS. I plan on buying a GTX 295 as soon as it comes in stock as Newegg. Didn't detract from the 3D at all really, in fact, the 3D probably made up for having to turn textures on medium instead of high.

First game I tested was Torchlight. It's a top-down Diablo-esque game, with cartoony graphics. Unrated by Nvidia, but it actually looks pretty damn good. I was very impressed. Only slight annoyance was the cursor not being 3D, but it really didn't bother me too much.

Second game I tested was Left 4 Dead 2. Wow. Playing this game in 3D takes it to the next level. I'm convinced that Chainsawing zombies in 3D is the pinnacle of gaming.

Overall, this monitor has exceeded my expectations. My previous monitor was a pretty good Samsung 22", and this monitor easily tops it. The colors are vivid, and the picture is crystal clear. As for 3D, the top ghosting is very minimal, if not noticeable at all.

I would recommend this monitor to anyone interested in playing in 3D. If you're going to spend $200 on the 3D glasses, you may as well go for the best experience and get the best monitor for the job!

Hey Guys,

I have now used this monitor with my xbox 360 as well. The difference between the Alienware and my Samsung T240 is astounding with Modern Warfare. Everything is so much smoother and the colors are fantastic. I miss the size of my Samsung when browsing the net but when it comes to games there is no comparison with the Alienware monitor. I'm selling my Samsung today (Breaks my heart) but I cannot justify owning three monitors just for gaming. My other monitor is a Kortek 36 inch but I only use that for 360 and PS3. I am now further convinced after an extra day of use that the AW2310 is a fantastic monitor and I have no problem recommending it to everyone.

My system specs are :
I7 920 2.66
GTX 295
GTS 250 (Physx)
6 gigs DDR3 1600
Thats 2ms goes upto 3ms whilst in 3d, as im aware of anyway.

And for no downsides...... i'd argue against that http://3dvision-blog.com/acer-aspire-gd245...monitor-review/

But on another note, Please post your impressions of the Acer when you get it /kiss.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Would appricate it, thanks
You should read the review fully:

"As with the previous generation of 120Hz 3D-ready displays, the Acer GD245HQ is also using a fast response TN panel with 2ms response rate for the pixels compared to 3ms (for 3D mode) in the first generation"

It's 2ms and the first generation and Alienware has 3ms for 3D mode. The review stated this because for 2D mode the Samsung 2233RZ has a 5ms response but 3D mode it had a 3ms response.

Also there are downfalls on both monitor but they share alot of the same faults.

I have this monitor and really enjoy it! It's true that it needs serious settings adjustment, but I wouldn't return it for all the world at this time. However, I absolutely respect the OPs opinion and it may just be that I'm nowhere near as exacting or as experienced in monitor evaluation!

Hey Guys,

I am just using the factory settings "Game". I have heard a lot of people say that they needed to adjust the settings on this monitor. Can you guys write down what you are changing so I can try it? I noticed when playing Far Cry 2 on this monitor when looking at the sun if the monitor is on any preset other than "Game" then the sun is doubled. I'm completely happy with the factory presets but if you guys know a better way to set up this monitor then I would love to know!

Thanks

UPS is now claiming it's still on the trailer when it came on Last Monday (the 9th) and there's about 60k packages and it will take about 1 week before they can get to it. even if i order the Alienware it wil ltake me 7 days to get it. :(

I don't get the different response time ratings. As far I've heard both the Acer and the Alienware use the same panel from Hyundai.

I suppose the Acer panel might have more overdrive going on but I'd guess the 2ms rating is just the best case gray to gray and is relatively meaningless.

Alienware is for people willing to pay more not to have an orange monitor.

I would be surprised if they didn't. They are not the no1 manufacturer of LCD screens in the World for nothing.

Hey Guys,

Last night I installed the drivers for the Alienware monitor. I have been using it for 2 weeks now without any drivers installed. I need to test it more but I noticed right away that my gun in Far Cry 2 seemed larger than before and that the aiming had improved significantly. Usually when playing Far Cry 2 in 3D I was forced to aim a little to the left of enemies in order to hit them from a far distance. Now I don't. Also I noticed less ghosting in all of my games (not that there ever was a lot to begin with). Even Mirrors Edge was improved. There was still ghosting visible but it seemed to be more transparant.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am hoping that this is not some kind of placebo affect and that the drivers have improved the monitor performance.

Folks,

I finally got it :D
I thought I should share my first impressions since now I feel this display received some unnecessarily harsh criticism.
Skipping the cool factor, I must say I am very pleased with AW's brightness and colour vibrance. It's almost (though not quite) as good as my previous Dell E248WFP (92% color gamut!) which I used for photo editing. Bleeding is more noticeable but hey, you can't have them all. Overall, the brightness and colour gamut advantage over Acer pays off well ;)

The 3D experience was jaw dropping I must say, particularly the Medusa application and the Nurburgring video.
I also tried the only 2 games I have installed on my system, Jade Empire and Witcher. The latter works perfectly, I was hardly pressed to notice any image artefacts and didn't, honestly. Maybe I need to look more carefully, maybe I need to play a little more. Maybe I need some more time to get a bit fussy, although I've been to IMAX in Berlin so I like to think my standards are reasonably high.
Jade Empire on the other hand didn't run so well... lots of double images until I adjusted the depth of field and the convergence. It still doesn't look near as good as Medusa or Witcher, but you have to take into consideration that Jade Empire is almost 5 years old, the graphics are a bit dated and was never designed with S3D in mind. It's not even in nVidia's approved list. Plus, there are ghosts everywhere (pun intended) so a little bit of ghosting is normal, I guess :D. However, nothing like "unbearable", "unplayable", or the 2 inch stripe at the top of the screen that so many talk about.

I don't know what to say.. I can only conclude the small variations from display to display are partially responsible for the crosstalk problem some people experience. I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

All in all, Acer has the larger screen and faster response, but Alienware wins in terms of brightness and colour gamut (although I am only comparing specs, I haven't seen Acer in action so far).
