SteamVR released today. Steam expected to reveal a VR headset in the next few days. Steamboxes are all built on nvidia vid cards. Nvidia told us to expect a big 3D Vision announcement in mid january. Connected? Am I going John Forbes Nash here? Let the rampant speculation begin!

No. Steambox are not nvidia exclusive. Nvidia announcing an exclusive piece of hardware at a valve/steam convention is not going to happen [public lynching?]. Not to mention many other facts such as Valve wants to go non-directx and nvidia is heavily vested into directx/windows. They will sell hardware[$] but I highly doubt they want to make any move/support to get into bed with valve especially concerning steam box.

Other companies have put out models with AMD hardware, but all the demo/prototype boxes valve sent out had nvidia cards in them starting with titans and ending with low end 600 series. nvidia has been stepping up quite seriously with opengl support if the linux nerds at slashdot are to be believed. *edit* http://news.softpedia.com/news/Nvidia-Shames-AMD-with-New-OpenGL-4-4-Linux-Compatible-Driver-376690.shtml

Opengl is still needed and is important, I believe much of the quadro based business is Opengl related as well. They do however, not support games implementing opengl over directx. You won't start an opengl game and get that "The Way It's Meant To Be Played" message. Valve would have to authorize a proprietary device on steambox... I *highly* doubt that would happen. Even "if" nvidia wanted to. Valve is still prototyping there own VR device... that would be weird.
