I have no experience at all with 3D tv's. Is 3D on tv even close to what it can be on a pc? What should one think about when purchasing a 3D tv? Plasma or LCD? Stuff like that.

Some PS3 games work really well in 3d, others don't. There aren't a lot of games that actually support 3d though, I believe there's a list on wikipedia.
As for the PS4, wait a while. Wait to buy it, and if you want a TV especially for it, it wouldn't hurt to wait on that. 3d games on the PS4 have been hinted at, but so far nothing concrete has been announced.

Do you mean 3D gaming, or watching 3D movies or other video?
In general, 3D movies and video are set at very low separation for the mass market, and are not adjustable, so if you are accustomed to 3D gaming it's a bit of a let down.
I agree with Pirate, no rush. For TVs, wait for Black Friday at least.

Got to do research.
Ghosting matters a ton. Not every display is equal. Look for feedback on any display you decide to look into. Keep in mind 3D gaming 3d is a lot stronger then cinematic 3d so ghosting is more likely.
Size matters imo.
Id recommend a 1080P projector but that's probably too inconvenient for the average person.

Thanks for your input guys, i think i'll wait a while. One more question, has anyone tried the function where two people watch two different programs on the same tv wearing glasses?
Is 3D on tv even close to what it can be on a pc?
It'll be the same as long as you connect the two! Maybe you meant a TV vs 3D Vision monitor. The key difference is that games will have to run at 720p on a TV.
LCD vs plasma, generally plasma is better for active 3D. Usually they have better picture quality and less ghosting that active LCDs, but it's best to read reviews and treat each model individually. There's a lot of variation between models and it's best not to generalize between plasma and LCD too much.
Passive 3D has it's advantages, and it's found on LCDs. Minor ghosting, cheap glasses, bright image, but there are resolution concerns (and black horizontal lines) if you sit close.
As others have said, the best you can get is a 1080p DLP projector. DLP is the key for ghosting though. There are also 1080p LCD 3D projectors that I wouldn't recommend (over DLP).
Get as large a screen as you can. It impacts gaming of course, but your screen size is essentially your depth setting for 3D movies, as they're designed for the big screen and are not adjustable at the source. For 95% of Blu-rays, the larger the screen the better.
And research as much as you can. That's half the fun anyway! The 3D Displays subforum of AVS has a lot of good discussions. (just be careful careful of active vs passive biases):

Lag needs to be looked at as well and factored into the choice. Last thing you want is one with horrible lag, though it generally is much better on TVs now than in the past. So make sure that it has a PC/Gaming function built in.
The thing I hated about my 3D HDTV before I took it up was the friggin updates.
There would be no kind of patch notes, you might update to the latest version only to find out that ghosting or lag it suddenly terrible. But guess what, there's no option to roll back..wtf.
Yah, I took mine back
