What to blame? The monitor or the glasses? (AW2310 woes) Or both...
So I've been working this monitor hard, trying to get all the ins and outs of it for review, and now I'm starting to wonder if maybe it isn't the monitor at fault here...

I've noticed a large number of games that have some pretty bad ghosting and double image problems, some of which include Team Fortress 2, Mass Effect, Avatar...and many others. However, it isn't while an object is in motion, but rather, when its stationary.

Here's an example...I've got a screenshot from TF2 (jps posted below), which the 3D Vision info window popped up suggesting to turn the HDR off (it also said it was HL2, which I can understand since the .exe is hl2.exe). The test level isn't standard, but it has enough random junk going on in it to be valid for testing. Below is a pic taken through the glasses while they were on.

As you can see, the caution sign has a double. So far, the only way I've found to fix it is to set the depth to practically 0%, and this affects other Source powered games. When I tried the Port level in CSS, I almost threw the glasses off when I stared out at the pier...seeing triple of a lightpost isn't fun.

Now, in Avatar, I noticed some strange performance. At first, the bottom of the screen had horrible ghosting, primarily in the left eye, and could be clearly seen when running through the water (the splashing effects). However, when I shut the monitor off for a few hours, then came back to play again, the ghosting was almost completely gone, save for a few sections. The jps I have included doesn't have much in the way of ghosting about it on the AW2310, except for the vine near the top of the screen.

As a final example, I've got a screenshot from Mass Effect, which as many know, has some 3D problems related to overlay. Now, for me, the ghosting effect appears on either side of Shepard's torso, making it look like a dark aura is around her. I tried using shortcuts for convergence tweaking, but got nowhere. Again, setting the depth to near 0% seemed to fix it.

At this point, I don't really know what to do. I'm on the fence for returning this monitor because of some quality issues I have with it, but until Blood from 3dvision-blog posts his review of the Acer monitor, I'm torn as to what course of action to take next. Either I can return the monitor, and try another for use with 3D vision, or I can return the whole kit and wait until they fix the hardware itself.

NOTE: I also ran the MTBS3D "Ghost Test" (posted below) and...oy...nothing good came from that...

Question: I just watched my 3D Vision glasses' left eye start shuttering without anything running...that's not normal, is it?

i too have an aw2310, ghosting is def an issue. BUt the truth is, i think all 120hz lcds on the market today will suffer from this. Im def noticing alot of ghosting in games, prob not as bad as the samsung though.

That sample pic with sign you have posted - such a ghosting is negligible, it is nothing.
However ghosting in Avatar and glasses shuttering without anything running - this is strange, because with Samsung monitor I have no ghosting in Avatar (I have only small not perceivable ghosting because I increased gamma in game to have brighter image).

And ghost image tests - you will see small ghosting even with dlp on these test images.

I guess from picture you have posted that AW2310 seems to be quite good.

I will keep Samsung for some months and buy Full hd when the price drops down.

Hi

We have researched the Alienware issue you are referring to and have some suggestions to fix your ghosting problem

Select preset mode ‘game’, set contrast to 44 (default 50) for best 3D quality

Allow your monitor to warm up and stay on for about 30 mins before you evaluate ghosting. Monitors needs time to warm up to have faster response time

If you turn off the power to the monitor and turn it back on, the 3D settings are lost and they have to exit/re-enter the game to get correct 3D
Thanks and let us know your results.

Thanks for the response Andrew. I'll try using Game Mode. Do you suggest I turn the response time overdrive off? Also, should I keep the dynamic contrast on or off (game mode uses it by default)?

Here's what I've been using as settings thus far, as well as some notes from my further tests.

    Preset: RGB. R90 G93 B100.
Contrast: 60. This is what my XRite calibrator suggested based on my target settings. However, this is also based on a first time calibration, which might not be 100% accurate after using it for a few days now.
Brightness: 50 (suggested 35). Games using 3D vision set this to 100...also, there seems to be a bug where the brightness doesn't always reset when you exit a game that uses 3D vision. Changing a setting that causes the monitor to resync, such as resolution, sets the monitor back to the preset settings.
    ICC Profile posted below.

    Game Notes:
Avatar - Very little ghosting now on objects, with exception to waterfalls. Strangely though, while I set 25% depth in the nvidia control panel, after exiting Avatar, this setting is reduced to 17%.
TF2 and Source Games - Almost unplayable due to the "aura" effect described in my ME1 post, and every object except for the gun has ghost doubles. The pic I posted doesn't really do what I'm seeing justice.
ME1 - Aside from being bombarded by the 2D interface elements, ME1 seems fine in indoor areas. Outside however, distant objects are doubled. I certainly hope ME2 performs better.

I'm taking a quick break from testing for a moment to let my eyes recover. I'll run some more checks in an hour or so with the settings you suggested.

EDIT: Alrighty, I'm back. Tested out the monitor with 44 contrast, Gaming Mode, Overdrive = On and Dynamic Contrast = On. Avatar still performs just as well as previously set, with a slight reduction in ghosting around the waterfalls. Not much changed with TF2 or CSS, ghosting was still pretty poor. I hate to say it, but every other game I've tried so far is mediocre at best...

I'll be posting my review later today (being about 2am where I am, I need sleep), but to be brief, between my original monitor, a BenQ FP241VW, for non-3D gaming and everyday use, and the AW2310, with it's 3D support, the tradeoff just isn't worth it. Here's to hoping that the tech keeps getting improved, and other monitor companies start including 120Hz on non-TN tech.

    Hi

Keep overdrive on, Dynamic Contrast is turned off automatically when 3D Vision is enabled.

Nice I will do this as well. I have noticed you do need to let the monitor warm up. Most of the time this alien monitor runs extremely well. I love it. The only ghosting I get in Avatar is when looking straight up in white sky. Other then that I don't see it at all. Still very very pleased with this monitor and 3D vision. I've been running mine in Cool. I'll try Game and the contrast when I get home tonight. Thanks! /sorcerer.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sorcerer:' />

JYTRA - Once again... I have this monitor and I'm not experiencing your issues.(maybe some but not as drastic as yours) Maybe it's your computer or graphics card? But yeah if you want something that has no ghosting...Purchase a DLP..

There is one game that works flawless on the alien monitor(that I've seen so far)... Street Fighter IV. (there is one level that doesn't work right, airport level) So I would recommend trying this game out...No really pop out effects in this game, but you might want to try it out since your having drastic ghosting issues.

On my DLP Devil May Cry 4 works AMAZING. I just bought this game again to try on the alien. Should have a review on that game in a week.

My wife just ordered me one, was getting kind of worried based on Jytra's review, although he seems to be a little bit more tech savvy and nit picky than I am.

Relieved to hear your experiences are good. I know it's Alienware, and probably a little overpriced, but it also seems like the best monitor available right now, which is why I was leaning towards getting it.

Wife knew I was kind of on the fence, so she took the plunge for me :P
