Custom resolution breaks 1080p 3D
Hi, My setup is as followed. My GTX 670 card is connected to an Yamaha A2010 receiver through hdmi, receiver pass the hdmi signal through unprocessed with hdmi to my JVC X35 projector. The problem I have is that I use this computer as a HTPC and thus want to achieve perfect smooth playback. So I created a custom resolution for 23.976 Hz, while using this resolution I go from 24hz to about 23.978, ie not perfect but close enough. The problem is that after creating this resolution I cant output 1080p 24hz FP(3D) anymore. 720p 60hz works but not 1080p 24hz. The resolution is there and I can activate it but starting the 3D test the projector does not receive a 3D signal, just normal 2D. As soon as I remove the custom resolution 1080p 24hz FP works again. I guess this is a driver bug or is there something I do wrong setting up the custom resolution?

I thought I read somewhere, that the newer versions of Cyberlink and Arcsoft had this feature and auto enabled it as a forced refresh rate or perhaps it was simply a suggestion in their future feature request subthread.

It appears to a limitation of the nvidia driver. It wont let you set a 2D 1920x1080 resolution if 3D is enabled in the NCP. To watch a film in 2D 24p I have to select the 3D 1080p resolution then press the 3D button on my TV remote to force 2D. This is the only way I can watch a film in 1080p 2D 24p with stereoscopic 3D enabled in NCP. It's a colossal oversight by nvidia, no matter which way you cut it. All those people living with the 3:2 pull down judder because nvidia won't let you set the refresh rate. Pure video and fancy codecs but can't get the refresh rate right! School boy error!

What are you using for playback software? One of the two I mentioned, auto matches (forces) the FPS of the Blu-ray. I can't remember which, I think it's Cyberlink.

TotalMedia has auto refresh changing but it doesn't seem to apply in this case. There are different settings for 2D and 3D in the Nvidia Control Panel. If you have a custom resolution for 2D, then 3D setting does not work with native BluRay 3D. If you delete the custom 2D resolution all works again. It would be great to get a fix or workaround for this outside of deleting and recreating the custom 2D settings every time you want to play a native 3D bluray.

I don't know if anything in this thread will help, but I think it might. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/535628/3d-vision/a-way-to-quick-toggle-between-extended-duplicate-and-3d-enabled-disabled-/3/ I might be able to make a script that uses Display Changer http://12noon.com/?page_id=80 to change resolution, refresh rate, and enables/disables 3D.

This is a great idea. However, we would need a script to create a custom resolution, not just change the existing resoltuions. If we had a script to completely delete the 2D 1080p custom resolution, then select the 3D HD 1080p resolution, then recreate the 1080p 2D custom resolution this would work. I may try to call support and report the issue. I'm sure it's already been reported, but can't hurt.

I'm not sure. Do you really need to create a custom resolution? Couldn't Display Changer be run with the switches -width= -height= -depth= -refresh=? dc.exe -width=1920 -height=1080 -depth=32 -refresh=24 (or 23.976 in your case, although I'm not sure if it supports decimals)

Also as far as 23.978 goes, unless your display was designed to specifically support it, I don't think you can make/force it to do it exactly. There are inherent characteristics of displays and the way they refresh. Eventually after a set amount of time, it will fall out of sync and cause a problem. So the script would need to be customized to the specific model it would be used on.

In order to get smooth playback of bluray I had to set up a customer resolution. I actually set it up for 23.976 with the following settings and my display supports it: 23 hz custom active pixels horizontal: 1920 vertical: 1080 front porch horizontal: 638 vertical: 4 synch width horizontal: 44 vertical: 5 total pixels horizontal: 2750 vertical: 1124 refresh rate = 23.976 The actual display rate on madVR says 23.97661. At times it estimates a dropped frame every 20 hours or so and this is the best I've heard of anyone getting with the NVIDIA cards. Playback is completely smooth. MadVR actually makes the changes to 23 hz (customized to 23.976 in NVIDIA control panel), so I think DC.exe would just be duplicating that. What I really need is a way to delete that custom setting and re-enable it before and after native 3D play with NVIDIA 3D HD 1080p resolution. I found some tools, but they tend to require a reboot and I'm not sure they have all those custom settings. It might be easiest just to manually delete and create the settings before and after 3D play. Anyway, I hope NVIDIA will address this.

Maybe registry settings, I'm not sure where the custom profile is stored but if you could find it you could export it as a .reg file.

I think it is stored in the reistry under.... microsoft windows.control panel...., but those might be values from using CRU Utility BTW...CRU Utilty puts the monitor/display in test mode, which causes it to be seen as generic so it is not recommended to use with 3D Vision/3DTV Play due to the driver needing to verify the display model to enable stereoscopic gaming. Great program for AMD users or 2D gamers.
