It was developed by Avalanche Studios using their in house Apex Engine, the same one used for Mad Max and Just Cause 3/4.

There's another game by avalanche releasing March 26th, gameplay looks a little lack luster/repetitive for single player (just killing robot after robot?). It will have online multi-player
https://store.steampowered.com/app/704270/Generation_Zero/
Also for those that do not know, Bethesda has a new IP called Starpoint. It will not be releasing any time soon, but it is sci-fi based

Note: Just Cause 4 fix by Losti contains some Regex features and might partially work with this game at launch. No guarantee :P

I enjoyed the first Rage and really liked the ID tech 7 Engine it ran on. I spent a lot of time developing with OpenGL and prefer it over DirectX for multiple reasons (primarly fuck Micro$oft). John Carmack, who unfortunately is no longer with ID, is also a technical genius, so I've always been a big fan of the engines that him and ID have developed. Sure, Rage had a ton of technical issues with the texture streaming when it was first released, textures looked blurry up close, and there wasn't much in the way of dynamic lighting since the lighting was baked into the textures. That being said, artistically is was top notch, all the textures were unique and the baked in lighting looked really good. All this combined made the environments look incredibly organic and life like. Playing it with Helifax's OpenGL 3D vision wrapper was a real treat. On top of that the AI was pretty awesome, the way enemies were animated and how they traversed the environment is still impressive to this day.
When Rage 2 was announced I was pretty hyped, as a developer I was really looking forward to see what ID would do next with the ID Tech Engine... Then i found out that Avalanche was developing it using their Apex engine. Now don't get me wrong, Avalanche are a decent developer. But I've never considered their games AAA, definitely a far cry from ID in terms of quality. On top of that their last release, Just Cause 4 (their leading IP) was universally panned. Most people consider it a downgrade from JC3. It was riddled with bugs and mediocre repetitive gameplay. It was only announced about a year before it's release. Avalanche just released Just Cause 4, and they've been working on another online multiplayer shooter which looks like absolute garbage. They're not a big studio by any means so releasing this many games in such a short time span is probably stretching them super thin. All this combined give me the feeling that Rage 2 is being rushed out the door quickly and will be pretty buggy. I've got a feeling like this is going to be a re-skinned version of Mad Max. They're basically throwing a bunch of pink and purple colors and adding in some mutants to make it look different. Most of the gameplay i've seen has been outdoors, most outdoor games nowadays are following the Ubisoft path of simply littering the map with icons and menial tasks to artificially extend game play. Given Avalanche's track record they'll probably do the same thing here. So yeah, my interest in this has basically plummeted. Add in the "Games as a Service" BS, loot boxes etc... I'm expecting this to be utter crap. Hopefully I'm wrong, I'll reserve my final judgement after it's actually released, but for now my expectations are abysmally low.

I'm definitely not a fan of the Games as a Service approach. I much prefer the pay once and your done model :P
Stretching the DLCs and gameplay out over a few years just downright sucks imo.
I'm hoping that the base game is decent/rewarding enough to warrant buying this, if not, maybe in 4-5 years at a huge discount that includes everything.
Look at Ghost Recon Wildlands, Year 1 Pass, Year 2 Pass and soon likely to be Year 3 Pass. BTW, the last update for Year 2 Pass is dropping on the 27th

I have to agree with D-Man11 this software as service just s**ks.
At this point with close to 2000 games in my steam library just wait 6 months to a year a pay a fraction of the price.
No more software as service no more games with loot boxes enough is enough.
Another horrible thing is Creation Club in Skyrim, the prices are stupid. Some things are as much as the DLC used to cost. WTF
Of course, it's all optional unneeded stuff for the most part. But it's a bad direction for developers to be pocketing mod cash.

Is Creation Club paid mods?
No. Mods will remain a free and open system where anyone can create and share what they’d like. Also, we won’t allow any existing mods to be retrofitted into Creation Club, it must all be original content. Most of the Creation Club content is created internally, some with external partners who have worked on our games, and some by external Creators. All the content is approved, curated, and taken through the full internal dev cycle; including localization, polishing, and testing. This also guarantees that all content works together. We’ve looked at many ways to do “paid mods”, and the problems outweigh the benefits. We’ve encountered many of those issues before. But, there’s a constant demand from our fans to add more official high quality content to our games, and while we are able to create a lot of it, we think many in our community have the talent to work directly with us and create some amazing new things.

Thank god for Nexus, but if all Skyrim mods were moved to Creation Club their overall game sales would have been shit, because at their creation store prices, the game would cost about $1000.00 fully modded. And Lord knows, this game is somewhat sucky until you mod the bejebus out of it.

Well that sucks, no options for 3D then :(
Anyhow...
It seems that Bethesda is going all in on microtransactions after their success in the first week of early access with Skyrim Blades. Though they are not truly needed in Rage 2 to play the game, there seems to be a lot of them from what I've seen in the Steam Discussions.

Very sad news…
Perhaps possible with Tridef or Depth 3D?
@chtiblue
Tridef or depth 3d don't work with Vulkan it doesn't matter to me regarding this game due to micro transactions I refuse to purchase a game that cost $150 to play.

Well from what I've read, it is limited to cosmetics only at this time, but it is very dis-tasteful for a game that's not F2P. If they are selling a 35 dollar package, there must be quite a few. Unfortunately, there are a number of developers that see this as their cash ticket to success
