The aircraft part of the game only works flawlessly at a separation setting of 1. The x key should be set to s1 c7. Any higher settings and things start going wrong from the veil to the hacksaw and eventually the clouds.
At the settings I suggested the stock clouds (these are 2D clouds) work perfectly there is no need for removing them. I know that it was intended to fix everything but it simply cannot be done as both Bo3b and 4everAwake had a look at the game code and the clouds in particular.
If you run the air section with my mix and amended x setting you will not find any faults as separation has been removed from the equation. Meanwhile the tanks are almost flawless with stunning 3D. I have spent many hours testing it all the way through to online combat. It was only when I took an aircraft out on the snowy plains of Russia that I realised that even my conservative s6 would need to be toned down to s1. That is the only change required in my submission to get the game done.
Try flying, using s1 setting, between the cloud layers. They appear as if they are 3D objects because you fly between layers while a parralax shift between the layers make them appear as if they are actually 3D clouds. Difficult to visualise but just set to cloudy or overcast to test this.

Hey Flowbee, I noticed something with AA Disabled I have the aircraft section on High separation and do NOT get the Shadow veil effect..
So maybe the shadow veil was linked with the Anti Aliasing all along, I just double checked and had separation too 75 and convergence to .8 I think..
Well either way I think we got something here and it may even rate an excellen rating..
Also did you say you have the clouds on but in 2D in the aircraft arena?? or where they in 3D because with the mod as it is not the clouds are in fact disabled??

Well sorry for the somewhat false alarm it seems that eefect is still there in some of the other maos but it definitely was not there in Hawaii this is really weird I am unsure why the other mao had the veil but not Hawaii when AA was disabled..
I am continuing to test..
Came across a problem flying simulator mode over Russia. My x key needs to be s1 c7. Anything over s1 and the veil is visible over the snowy plains. Also my ini file still has Shader hunting turned to 2.#101
The x key setting should be s1 c7 for aircraft otherwise veil returns in winter maps.#105

My file submission was made in post #98. The point I was trying to get across in my posts after this was that my x key assignment needed changing to s1 c7 and that my Shader Hunting was left set to 2 (it should be set to 0 before posting fix).
This is what the x key assignment in the d3dx.ini file should look like:
; cockpit aircraft and main menu
[Keycockpit]
Key = x
separation = 1
convergence = 7
also:
[Hunting]
; 0: Release mode is with shader hunting disabled, optimized for speed.
; 1: Hunting mode enabled
; 2: Hunting mode "soft disabled" - can be turned on via the toggle_hunting key
hunting=0
Could that change be made on the submitted fix?
OK, after a long struggle I found that when testing the effects of Anti-Aliasing I had neglected to switch it back on. This caused the aircraft double image coming back.#74
Or in other words turning off Anti-Aliasing results in double aircraft at distance. However some maps show almost no veil effect while others are horrendous. If you really want to see if the veil effect is better or gone try the British or Russian aircraft testing maps. The final test is snow covered flat land as even a trace of veil will mar the horizon.
I also noted in my earlier posts that one eye shadows on hill sides disappeared after disabling FXAA. And Flashing ground textures stopped after changing resolution to 2560x1440. As I couldn't be exactly sure which combination of settings had fixed these two glitches I took a screenshot of my settings at that point and included it as a good starting point for settings.
I will be truly amazed if you find anything new in the settings as I have tested the sh/t out of this thing over 5 years. If you do I will be not only amazed but delighted. :)

Well is there a good reason you took out the toggle for the UI besides a key conflict???? I like being able to toggle it into 3D. the way it is right now it is in 2D??
I made the other changes for you and will post the fix soon..

OH and I noticed you used hotkeys that conflict with keys in the game Z,X,C could we replace those key presses with some other keys??
Z,X,C are the Aircraft ones in game and makes it hard to go into the different views.. ;)
Great, just remember to update the readme with the new key settings. You also had trouble opening an rtf file extension so maybe save it as txt instead. All good.
Oh, and the reason I changed the cycle to a toggle was that my Hud was scrambled with lettering at different depth and also overwritten, it was a mess. I had mentioned what I had done in posts, #14, #28, #53, #79, #84, and #88 .
Changing assignments is very easy as you have just illustrated. For instance after 5 years the games default assignments are well lost to me so I chose letters that were not in use by me. I will be surprised if any players will not be in the same situation so maybe mention where to customise the assignments. I had not considered that aspect until you brought up the issue.
Also I note that although key x has changed to key . the separation and convergence are still wrong. I thought after listing my requests in quotes and post numbers and spelling it out in post #112 I might have managed to convey the reason why separation should be 1 and convergence 7. As I now no longer feel able to contribute in any way I will thank you again for your assistance and actually start playing the game.

Yes I got your settings for the cockpit 1s c7 I just copied that real quick just more or less to show the key presses..
I will update the file you sent and will make the readme a txt file so others can open it too in case they don't have office..
If you can think of other things to do let me know.. I will post the new version soon just need to assemble it all..
