Ah ya those points do ring a bell, I guess the only real benefit from going to 2x480 at the time would've been better DX9 performance in games that had problems with Quad-SLI since 1x480 was roughly equivalent to 1x295. Problems that could've/should've probably been fixed in driver updates instead of $1000 in new hardware. I remember it was kinda funny because DX10/11 games seemed to be the ones that had the worst scaling in SLI with my 480s in 3D Vision, but I think they've been hammering out those issues with each driver release.

But ya the 590 is similar to the 9800GX2 with Nvidia going back to 2xGPUs with full functional units, just down-clocked, so depending on how well it OCs it could certainly be quite a bargain for 2x un-neutered GF110s and more full memory bus/VRAM for roughly 30% less cost than 2x580s. Plus they do look very cool for sure! :)

However, Extended Desktop was indeed the only way to get 3D Vision + HD Audio (DTS HD Master) to work. Otherwise, with Desktop Clone, the same HD Audio failure would occur.

Again, thanks to your tip with regards to UltraMon, I was able to simulate Desktop Clone through this program.

I'll try to state this succinctly as I can for him.

If one wants to view 3D Blurays and bitstream HD audio codecs like DTS Master HD and Dolby True HD, one either needs a GTX 560/460 or with any other GPU they will need something like the Auzentech Hometheater HD or the Asus Xonar HD to supplement the GPU.

This problem becomes much worse with the latter solution since to have your 3D display detected AS a 3D display you have to bypass the receiver and go straight into the TV. One can use an INF hack or Gefen's DVI Display Doctor device, which both are kind of hardware and software hacks.

What I do to get around all this (and what I suggested to klau1) without using hacks, is simply to run DVI1 port out straight to the TV, and run DVI2 to the Auzentech HT HD, then to my HD receiver, and the receiver is now considered to be the "Extended Desktop Display." This will allow one to have their TV or display recognized as a 3D Ready display and to bitstream HD audio to the Receiver. This is a cumbersome method because it is a hassle to run Extended Desktop Display when you really only have one display. You can run programs like Ultramon to keep your mouse in Dekstop 1, and Ultramon has some other nice features as well.

Other than owning a video card like the GTX 560 that can bitstream the Bluray HD audio codecs, there is really no other way I can see to do this as I mentioned. The mandatory EDID reading of a 3D Display makes it necessary to run two different lines out of your graphics card if you want to be able to do 3D HT PC type activity.

This is my solution for klau1's problem, and it appears that it works for him.

Do you see a better way to do this?

The Audio fails, and the AV Receiver indicates "no signal", so picture but no sound.

I read elsewhere that the limitation was due to 3D+Bitstreaming requiring a HDMI 1.4 AV receiver because framepacking 3D modes require HDMI 1.4.

While all my AV components are HDMI 1.3, I'm using Checkerboard 3D mode which is entirely a HDMI 1.3 standard, so it should work.

In fact, I was able to briefly use bitstream + nVidia 3D Vision (set to generic dlp checkerboard) in TMT 3. But this stopped working once I restarted the PC.

This fluke proves checkerboard 3d mode can work together with HD bitstreaming. Indeed, CHECKERBOARD 3D is a HDMI 1.3 standard. There is no reason why it shouldn't work.

All my components are HDMI 1.3. The soundcard is Xonar HDAV 1.3 slim.

This problem occurs when components are connected in the following fashion:

GPU DVI1 > Xonar HDMI Soundcard > AV Receiver > TV HDMI

The current limitation is just artificially imposed with no reason.

Here are all possible scenarios:
3D Vision + Bitstream (ie: DTS Master) = Audio Fail (receiver indicates no audio signal)
3D Vision + Regular audio (ie: DTS//DD) = Audio works

Checkerboard 3D is also supported through HDMI 1.3.
