It wasn't just buggy at release, it was pretty unplayable. Egosoft pounded on the game for years afterward, though. Throw in some mods to keep the smalltalk minigame out as much as possible and it's a pretty good game. X4 is looking really good but Egosoft does have a history of biting off more than they can chew and releasing games with some fairly nasty bugs in them. Rebirth was an extreme case. They also have a history of staying with those games and improving them for a long time, though, so they end up as excellent games for people who like long, deep gameplay.
