Facebook buys Oculus for 2 Billion
Count me out. I want an OR for escapism. I'm sure that Facebook only wants in for more data harvesting and targeted ads. My day one purchase of the consumer model is no more. How paranoid must I be that this all feels rather ominous to me? You never know, it could all be splendid new for 3D Vision. That's all I really care about tbh. OR is a little too disconnected from reality for me to want to buy in; which of course is what is great about it!

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Hearing Iribe, Palmer now talking about how virtual reality "will be great for connecting people in new ways" when they have always focused on gaming gives me chills. Palmer has been addressing everyone on reddit saying that they will still do what they want, focus on gaming, money is great for hardware development, hiring staff, etc. All is good! Yeah, so basically Facebook gave you the money for free. I have seen a million times in gaming things like EA Bioware acquisition which had the same optimism, now both founders of Bioware are gone. At the end of the day, Facebook owns Oculus and they will do as told. I find it hard to believe that Facebook won't integrate somehow with the VR Oculus experience, that FB won't have the final say on publishing contracts, and so on. They have got a pile of cash in exchange of the VR dream, let's see what happens now. In any case, I trust Sony will do the right thing for VR and gaming, at least their most recent decisions in terms of indies, DRMs, hardware design, etc have been great.

I hope Sony would release something for the PC, but I am really hoping it's not the framepacking 1080p/24hz per eyes.

I think it's a brilliant move. If you put aside the natural dislike for facebook and think about what this means... I think the long-future of VR is in much better hands with Facebook than Sony. Btw: I hate facebook, don't have an account.

As far as independence, we have a real example: Instagram. Facebook acquired them in 2012 for $1 billion and said Instagram would continue to operate independently...and they have. I think this is far more relevant than examples of what other, much different companies have done.
Hearing Iribe, Palmer now talking about how virtual reality "will be great for connecting people in new ways" when they have always focused on gaming gives me chills.
Palmer has always been talking about how VR will have significant applications beyond games, so my first impression was that this makes sense in the long term. But what can Facebook actually do with VR now? Nothing. It will be limited to high end gaming PCs for a good long time. The only option I see for Facebook is to let VR develop on it's own (ie, PC gaming). Maybe ten years down the road when the technology has matured and your average person has much more computing power than they do now, then they can do something with VR.
Airion, i think your analysis is good and and could be right... but I personally doubt it. Many large companies spoil products, think EA. The fact OR was so small and built as a grass roots approach gave it a lot of love and respect. It also meant, the people in charge were there because they truly love VR.
It also meant that their much touted devkit (#1) was a clunky un-ergonomic piece of crap with multiple design issues, and a low-fi screen that was miles behind the technology curve. Some of these problems will go away now that someone has thrown so much money at them. Though I wholeheartedly agree that it shouldn't have been Facebook doing the throwing. If it were, say, Google, I'd be happier. (Though my prediction is that Google has their own in the works, which we'll find out about over the next few months) I'm kind of halfway between Airon and the doomsayers. I don't think Facebook will meddle massively in VR, at least not any time soon. It's just not their area of expertise. Sure, they'll have the power to veto certain decisions and contracts, and perhaps they'll choose to install some new staff into the Oculus organisation (probably industry experts from outside), but ultimately it'll be in their best interests to let the VR guys do their thing, and just sit back and watch the money roll in.

Imo, They were "grass-roots"/whatever and tbh not a single game that bothered to implement for Rift are non-indie BESIDES valve. Valve only basically showed an interest in VR because of indie scene/steam market tbh . People kind of avoid that truth for some reason. This is definitely going to hurt the indie scene/ modders/ etc. They are "corportate" now... Theres no changing that image. Not to mention making a Rift game was a risk before. Now they have to risk it for a "facebook owned company". Damage has been done. Rift was like a household name, sure people didn't know wtf it was going to be use for but everyone praised it and talked about.... now... I really think it matters if they plan to invest that money into getting dev's to implement. To sum it up Rift needs to buy allegiance now in order to be a success. I guess I was kind of turned off by Rift's mass market approach before this so you can grain of salt it if you want.

I want VR to be a high-tech platform that the Irrationals, Biowares, and Ubisofts of the world make gorgeous, high-end games on. Not just a B-grade piece of tech that 'almost works' and that interests only hipsters working in Unity. The automobile didn't revolutionise the world because some passionate indie hobbyist built one in his garage. It revolutionsised the world because Henry Ford took it and streamlined it for the mass market. The hobbyist automobile inventors are long forgotten and irrelevant, while 100 years later and on the other side of the world, I own a Ford, and it's a damn fine car. If VR is to truly take over, then AAA games are the only way it can do so. Either way, indies will always find a way to do what they do, regardless.

Look at the last two games I posted on helixmod. I got bored in like 10 mins of both. No offense to indie but I could get behind screwing indie for corporate games. Problem is its still mass market. Even if its latest tech/graphics. That device ant going to be built for us where it would take advantage of it. No way is a $2 Billion investment in VR going to lead to a device designed around the people who can afford $1500+ computers. Its going to be mass market.

It's really anyones guess as to what is going to happen. The fact that it is Facebook who acquired the Occulus somehow seems disheartening. Facebook is social media, not a game company. Money is what drove this deal and I really don't give a rats ass what Palmer has to say, he is going to have some hard lessons about corporations and large sums of money. Control is lost. Someone here posted earlier about facebook or fuckbook becoming passe, this is true. Chat now online with your thousands of friends and do all this in VR, wtf....I'll go out for a pint and do the real live person thing instead. If it was a game company like Valve, I would have a different view point...
