Guide to getting Optoma HD66 to work with CD1.27 (and possibly higher) drivers.

this may be an easy one to fix, but I'm not sure.

You must have the projector plugged into the first VGA or DVI port on your GFX card. I too get the VGA out of range when it's plugged into the second port.
Hi there mate, yeah I have tried that I'm afraid and it didn't work, just got the same 'out of range' message. So close!

I emailed Optoma about the support for nVidia 3D and this is the response (and my original email below).

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your support request, this product is not NVidia approved yet.

-----My Original Message-----

Problem With Product (if relevant): I would like to request Nvidia 3D support for the HD67 (at least).

Nvidia have told their users to ask Optoma directly and that is what I am doing. The thread for this request is located here http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=160042 .

Can somebody PLEASE clarify what is going on though? The internet is rapidly filling with nonsense on the subject and I would like to know if I can stick with my prefered hardware model (Optoma) or will I be forced by Nvidia/Optoma to buy a inferior Acer H5360?

The forums I am reading indicate that when ATI release their 3D solution that people may go with that over Nvidia's IF the solution works with Optoma (et al).

Please can my question be dignfied with a response?

I have asked similar questions many times before with no luck. If it is a political/business issue then please do say so, you don't have to give the details to the users just the reason.

Thanks and best regards,

Daniel James.

So there you have it, clear as mud. The only silver lining is that the answer was 'doesn't support it 'yet'.

Bah !

I have just sent a response back to Roy at Optoma.

Here is a copy.

Let's hope that there is more news to come soon.

Dear Roy,

Thanks for your swift response.

It is such a shame that Optoma and nVidia can't get 3D vision working together. I suppose you are being asked to pay a fee or something akin to that? As there is no official word on the certification subject we can only 'assume' that Optoma and nVidia are discussing things, we could all be wrong of course.

I presonally think that having to pay nVidia a fee is questionable but then again it could pay dividends if the technology becomes popular. You may see increased sales of your product because of the added support. Acer seem to have thrown themselves at nVidia certification and where I used to read on the 'AV Forums' nothing but how amazing the HD65 and HD700x was as a gaming/cinema unit the website threads are now being replaced by how amazing the Acer H5360 is (for all the wrong reasons).

I have already owned the Acer model and think the unit is inferior on every level to the HD67. Build quality for the Acer is atrocious, the lumens are way too much and create terrible RBE for users (I had 5 or 6 people complain when demo'd), the unit won't stay in ECO mode, the interface is unintuitve and don't get me started on the joke of a remote control !

I returned it to 'Projector Shop 24' within a week of use.

I am very impressed by the price range and performance of the HD67 and want very much to continue to be a very happy Optoma customer (I own a HD65 a HD700X and now a HD67), it is extremely sad to think that your customers may be forced away by nVidia dictating who can use their technology. Is that even legal ? Locking down techology/software/hardware has resulted in some interesting court action over the years between manfacturers - sometimes famously.

There does seem to be methods of 'hacking' the HD66 and other projectors to work with nVidia's solution, which proves that there is no technical reason why your brand should not work with nVidia. But then we all know that.

I have just tried to get my HD67 to work with the HD66 hack solution but I have had no luck personally.

I hope what I have written may help give you an understanding of how both Optoma and nVidia customers are feeling, we feel stuck in the middle of a battle that we have no say in and it will end up pushing us to go to other solutions in the end. I thought that writing to you may just help in getting a ground level perspective from an end user point of view.

My hope is that my contact will be of some use, not being able to hear my tone or inflection in an email is worrying me, I have nothing but respect for the good work that Optoma put in to the excellent product range and recommend Optoma over any other similarly priced product.

I am not trying to be critical of Optoma or of nVidia, but as a customer of both this issue is, of course, a tortuous one.

Again, thank you very much for your swift, if short, response. I had emailed a few times before and was beginning to think I would never get a reply. It is obvious that you can't say much more than you already have but I do hope that there is a definitive answer to my (and so many other users) question soon.

With kind regards,

Daniel James.

Woo Hoo !

Just got the HD67 to work with the HD66 solution.

I think the VGA cable I was using was too long and it was not getting a decent signal. I just swapped down to a 2 metre cable (after taking the beamer off the ceiling) and it works a treat.

The only issue I have is that I can't seem to get 1280 x 720 @ 120 hz to work but !024 x 768 and 800 x 600 @ 120 hz work fine.

I have a GTX 275 black edition and the VGA cable is on port one with nothing else connected running the 1.23 nVidia drivers. With the custom Riva driver.

The 3D glasses must also be worn upside down, exactly the same as the HD66 again.

There must be next to no difference with the HD66 and the HD67 to my mind.

I tried a 3D blu ray rip/conversion of Monsters Vs Aliens and the 'Bat and Ball' sequence at the beginning kicks arse ! The VGA cable may be letting down the party when it comes to doing a 1080p clip of Dracula 4D. There is major ghosting issues on the chubby guys shoulders whereas on my Samsung 3D lcd there is no sign of ghosting. Of course it could be any number of things causing the issue.

The above 3D clips are available from here by the way (I see there is an Avatar download available finally too!).

http://3dvision-blog.com/category/3d-movies/page/3/

Can anyone tell me how they set up 1280 x 720 @ 120hz custom resolution on their projector please? In detail, with timings etc. I have tried but with no success so far.

Thanks.

Holy crap, you guys play with dlplink on? And I tought 5360 sucks big time...

If it kills on / off contrast (blacks) return the pj or put it onto ebay... Thats much much lower than 1000 then, you are below LCD monitor perfomance.

Ok I got it to work and I am really excited.
Here's my setup:
PJD 6531w Viewsonic Projector
Windows Vista 32 bit
Nvidia 3D Vision drivers version 1.23
Nvidia 9800 GTX running the PJ and a 52" Sharp LCD
VGA cable with a pin modded VGA/DVI adapter at the video card
Used the driver for the optima
Folowed the steps posted earlier
I am now playing Far Cry 2 in 3D
I had no issues with the driver installation or usage.
Only gripe is I gotta wear the glasses upside down :)
Thanks to the fellow who posted the mod!!

I have wasted 2 weekends with Viewsonics tech support trying to get this thing to work. Still cant get the USB port to work but atleast I gots the 3D!!

HD66 user here, if you output at 120hz to the projector it will automatically turn on 3D in the menu and you are unable to turn it off.
I have played with brightness and contrast and colour settings in both Nvidia control panel and the projector options and am pretty much satisfied with picture quality now for what this product is.
I am also wearing the glasses the correct way around now :)

Fellow shafted Optoma HD66 owners I have treat for you, or other projector owners using the EDID hack around.

Use beta 1.27 drivers.
Use the Acer H5360 EDID override monitor.inf which is in these forums, can't remember which thread.

Thank bullripper cause you can now wear your glasses the correct way up /stud.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':stud:' />

I only discovered this on the weekend and wasn't sure to share in fear of a Nvidia revolt where they would screw me over in a future driver.
But I figured screw that mentality.

I have just tried HDMI instead of VGA and it also works.
Now I can feed my sound via HDMI to my amp and pass through via HDMI to the projector. Previously I had a seperate output to the amp for sound.
Also you get Tint and Saturation in the menu on the HD66 now as opposed to using VGA which will help us who like to tinker with the image.

So happy everything is as it should have been when I first bought the projector, well my expectations of how everything should have been anyhow!!!

I actually asked ages ago on these boards if any kind Acer H5360 users could get me the EDID and monitor.inf for their projetors but didn't have any bites then recently a user posted it up, thank you man if it wasn't for you I couldn't try it.

Ohh what does that say in my Nvidia control panel for Stereoscopic 3D display type: Acer projector H5360 DLP. But you know what you are don't you my little HD66 :)

Wow I can even go through the Nvidia 3D vision setup and it thinks I am using a H5360 certified.
All this is with that monitor.inf and that is it, I haven't pulled any pins for the DVI to HDMI adaptor.

The great thing about this is I can finally get to that screen where you can change the Hz in the setup, but Nvidia have changed it now to say either night time or use game settings where as before we could pick 120hz or 100hz.

YES !!!!!

This driver works totally perfectly ! I have had a Acer 5360 and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the HD67 works exactly the same as the Acer with these drivers installed. Here is a link to the driver:

http://mymediasystem.net/wp/2010/03/Acer_H5360.inf

I too did not have to remove ANY pins from the cable, I have a dvi - hmdi 5 metre cable running from my 275 xfx card and all is exactly as it should be.

I am using the 1.23 drivers but I will try with some newer ones soon and post how they workout.

I can 100% confirm though that this simple driver fix works as well as the Acer, the HD67 is finally a nVidia 3D working beamer !!!!

Great news it works the same on the HD67, I reckon it would work fine with all the 1280x720 (120hz) projectors in various brands.
You do know this probably won't last though Nvidia will be pissed and will try and plug it guaranteed, we need some hackers in the 3D world :)

I can also confirm it works perfectly with cd 1.27

However, there seems to be a significant reduction in the amount of depth that is possible. There was a hack around here somewhere to allow for depth increases for the H5360 so will look into that.

BTW at the rate nvidia seems to be monitoring these forums I doubt they'll ever fix these hacks due to their complete incompetence.

EDIT: Here's a link to the thread with the depth hack. Link

You need to let that batch file run while you are playing your game. So run the batch file, then start the game.

Yeh when I first discovered it I was using the latest beta not sure if that is 1.27 or not but it was the most recent, I'm with you from previously using the generic CRT method where the depth was great straight off the bat without even using the hack to using this method I had to go straight to 100% when I first fired it up.

I can see why all the Acer guys were complaining about depth and wanting the hack back that Nvidia promised they wouldn't take away but still did. Glad to see it's back!

Mourt you switched to using HDMI input now too?

I can see why all the Acer guys were complaining about depth and wanting the hack back that Nvidia promised they wouldn't take away but still did. Glad to see it's back!
