He does mention that they intend to eventually add in VR support as well.
On the one hand:
"Oh #!%@, a major engine update!"
I'm still dealing with the breakage of a couple of my fixed games that updated to Unity 5 and broke literally *everything*
On the other hand:
"Hmmm, this dev cares about 3D Vision - maybe they will add support to UE4 for it?"
Last time I looked at the UE4 source code (admittedly that was a while back now), I could not see any evidence of the 3D Vision support that UE3 had.
Yep, sketchy for UE4 update. Clearly they are moving to UE4 for the DK2 support. Guess we'll see if they go past that to add 3D Vision support.
On sale right now on GOG, so I went ahead and picked up a copy there.
Unlike stupid old Steam, GOG doesn't force feed me updates, so I can download the old version and keep it. Upcoming feature says it will allow downgrades too. I like the idea of giving me options instead of treating me like a console player.

The move to UE4 is primarily to port their game to the PS4.
"Yes, we used Unreal Engine 3 for the original release of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, now we are moving to Unreal Engine 4 as a natural progression. We will be able to achieve some additional graphics effects with it (make it look even more amazing!) and we are going to implement some other improvements in the new version of the game as well, such as a better saving system. However, the most trivial reason was that Unreal Engine 3 simply does not support PlayStation 4."

The REDUX version been already released. I didn`t play it yet, still downloading but I will let you know what`s up with 3D.
Good thing is that you can keep your old (UE3.5, DX9) version untouched. This UE4 version have separate installer on Steam.

One view is totally blurred out - you can`t see nothing. There is not even possible to see if there is anything else broken.
Anyway engine is phenomenal. The world is life like with very fantasy looking art style. If this is the way Unreal Engine is going to - i like it.
I don`t think anybody will jump back on this title (to fix it) since we all got 3D fix for DX9 version. But maybe on this one we can check if any debugger works.

I bought this on the current GOG sale (70% off). It's wonderful with the UE3 version + helixmod fix. The UE4 version isn't as bad as I expected in 3D, at least at the start of the game. Disabling water reflections in the options makes the white left eye efect disappear, and I have only seen a few things wrong (some shadows, blood on the ground, water reflections and not much else).
Since they are working to make an update for VR devices, I wonder if that update will fix the game in 3D Vision.

TBH, I think they only ported over from UE3 to UE4 for eventual VR support. The visuals are a bit better for most part and in some cases a little worse. Lighting/shadows are much better, water/reflections is a bit worse. Texture resolution is the same [Ridiculously high].
I really don't see the point of anyone looking at the DX11 version unless its impossible to play original version. Is there any way? If so lemme know and Ill add instructions.
Since they are working to make an update for VR devices, I wonder if that update will fix the game in 3D Vision.
No, not unless they add engine support for it (or take my proof of concept plugin and finish it). You can use the -emulatestereo command line parameter to make it output side by side to see how it looks on a 3D TV, but it still uses a VR style stereo projection, meaning it doesn't use an off-center projection like 3D Vision and won't look as good. It also won't be calibrated to your screen like 3D Vision is and will almost certainly violate infinity. There's no convergence control so no real pop-out, and the FOV is fixed too high. Some of their menus are broken as well.
