Sword of the Stars 2 and 3D Vision
Hi guys, This game was just re-released as an Enhanced Edition and is well worth your time if you're a fan of 4x games. The profile listed by NVidia is "Mars (something)", which doesn't work at all. I don't mean that it looks bad, I mean that there's no 3d effect at all, even though the game is rated "excellent" by NVidia. My question is two-fold: Can anyone suggest a rename for the .exe ? and, if so, how do I actually change the .exe name to make it work ? I've seen references to people doing this but I've never understood how to actually do it. Any help would be very welcome.

Try prototype / masseffect2 / aion Just rename it to prototype.exe / masseffect2.exe / aion.exe Nvidia inspector is an alternate method. I talk about it here. http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2012/09/borderlands-2-3d-vision-patch.html

It's a bit more complex. When you launch the program, it starts a little (.Net?) program that lets you change some of the options, get the manual, and start the game. WHen that program starts the game, it passes a command line along to the actual game program (which is called mars.exe). So, if you just rename the program from mars.exe to masseffect2.exe, the little launcher program won't find it. If you try to just start the game directly, you won't have the command line and the program won't start. (Or at least that's what happened when I last tried six months back.) I did make a tiny little .Net program to get around this. All it does is take the command line and start another program using the same command line. If worse comes to worse, I suppose I could post that somewhere. I think the way to go, though, is to do the NVIDIA Inspector thing. It will be easier to use and Steam won't blow it away every time there's an update. P.S. I can't remember the details but there was some reason why I had to actually make that little program instead of simply making a shortcut with the command line in it.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. However, it seems that Sword of the Stars II is not meant to be played in 3D... I've tried with both aion.exe and prototype.exe, and the starfields are at the wrong depth.

Rats. Well, about the only thing 3D would be good at would be screenshots in the battles anyway. All that UI tagged to ships/stars wouldn't have been attached anymore.
