Low FPS on HL² with 3d vision don't understand why...
  1 / 4
hello,

i don't understand why i can't play hlaf life ² correctly with 3d vision.

Whenever i play a HL² game i experience some kind of lags, but my fps never get under 60fps (neither over)! I don't understand why it's not smooth.

Someone have the same problem ?

You've pretty much answered your own question.

"i have an average of 150fps without the 3d vision" <-- that is WITHOUT 3d Vision.

3d Vision doubles the load on your graphics card(s). It takes a big bite out of performance. You can compensate either by lowering your visual settings or adding an additional card for SLI.

You might want to upgrade to GTX 260 or better. 8800GTS is sitting at the bottom of the supported video card list together with 8800GT, so the poor S3D performance should be expected.

I understand the fact that the fps is split in half, but hlaf of 150 isn't 60, and 60 fps is enough, it should be smooth !

I think it's my hardware too, but i am just checking if it's not the game that adapt correctly to 3d vision

Some games drop more than 50% in stereo mode. I don't really know why.

I have similar experience with LOTRO. In regular mode, I easily get 120+ fps.... but in stereo mode I average about 42 fps.

I just did some test, and something is wrong ! Even when i drop everything to low and even if i put a lower resolution, same fps ! it should go up !

Apparently not.

Like Zeratul pointed out, you probably need to upgrade to a more powerful graphics card. The 8800 would be the lowest compatible model, you'll get much better performance with a GTX260 or higher.

Sure, I don't see why not. As long as it has a PCI-Express x16 slot it should work with any PCIe graphics card.

From my Understanding of 3d Vision, Frame Rates and Refresh rates you wouldn't get more than 60Framers per second in any game in 3d vision.

The video Card is pushing out a max of 120 Frames per second so that we can have a max of 60 Frames for the right eye and a max of 60 for the left eye. In this case the Max fps coincides with the Refresh rate per Eye.

What's funny is that everyone is concered abotu the FPS that get's produced by the video card,

but if you are getting 120fps but your screen is only refreshing 60 times in a second it's impossible for the entire 120frames to be displayed to the screen in that oen second interval.

Even if you are getting 10 frames in a second, the conventional Monitor still refresshes 60 times in a second. And because the refresh rate is lower than the Frame rate you get more repeated frames.

So if your game is getting 60fps a second with 3d vision that's the max it will get with the current setup.

That is correct IF you have vsync enabled.

Without vsync enabled your fps are limited in OR out of stereo mode only by your gpu(s).

In my ExperienceNot it doesn't matter if Vsync is enabled or not the max frame rate for any game I've played with 3D vision is 60fps. I've used FRAPS on quite a few games and that's the end results for my system.
Please go ahead and test that on yourself.
The GPU limits the frame rate in Stereo mode to make sure the corresponding two frames are drawn on screen one after the other (that is frame for the left and right eyes)

Vsync is always, always, ALWAYS forced on when stereo 3d mode is enabled. Otherwise the screens would tear like crazy and no 3d effect would be noticed.

That's why using 3d introduces mouse lag and a stuttery image - 60 fps isn't smooth. 100 or 120 is, but 60 is still pretty choppy. Unless, of course, you've been using an LCD and you're used to the low framerate and getting raped in online fps games.
