Tridef, I think that was it. I thought they had died in like 2014 though. I forgot about VorpX as well. I didn't realize that was still around and it has a 3D cinema mode now and allows shaderfixes. Has anyone asked them about adding support for non-VR displays? That could be a big opportunity for them now, considering the circumstances. Either way, I'm significantly less worried about the death of 3D gaming with them still around. Headsets are only going to become more and more of a viable option as time goes on.

iz3D was the older one that stopped development to concentrate on their Zalman branded products. They tried to sell off their stereoscopic middleware for something like $600,000, but had no takers.

Re: VorpX, see here: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1101775/3d-vision/future-of-3d-vision-support-official-announcement-from-nvidia-/post/6032979/#6032979 Some other things to note: Vorpx's Proper 3D nor its fake 3D are on par with properly fixed 3DV games / Compatibility mode - e.g. in proper 3D games, shadows and other effects don't work on a number of games with VorpX, whereas they work perfectly with fixed 3DV games. If we can make a similar driver that works with VR, which can also utilise our current fixes and allow shaderhackers to fix new games, it would be hands down the best thing on the market for now and the future. More importantly - not many people are interested in VR games as much as people are interested in playing normal games, but in VR. VorpX can potentially do that, but it has its limitations. If we can properly integrate VR with S3D, there is an absolutely huge market waiting to be tapped. Facebook/Oculus, and Valve/Steam would be willing to pay through the nose to buy that tech up and make it exclusive technology - it would't simply be a killer app, but an absolutely crucial functionality. Whoever has this tech would control VR and its entire landscape for a long time to come. That software, if and when it were to exist, would potentially make billionaires out of the creators... it's a shame nVidia and AMD are short sighted and cannot see this. Up until this point, nVidia had an easy way to make that happen. It's quite astonishing that they decided to let the opportunity slip. Our friend costiq made this in remembrance of that wound: Great, I'd rather the huge success come to our hard working smarty friends who have done so much for the community for next to nothing over the years, than an already multi-billion dollar company who has done little more than sustain us with pre-chewed cardboard, leaving us to fend for ourselves, and then tossing us aside like a used condom after taking our money. Chaps, whoever is making this thing, we wish you all the success - Not only are you capable, but you shall have well earned and well deserved the triumph.

bo3b mentioned that he had a rough working concept of something to this extent. I believe he posted it in the first thread.

Thanks, RD. That post didn't come up when I searched for vorpx somehow. This topic does though: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1077376/3d-vision/vorpx-with-shadertools-availiable/post/5898543/#5898543 I don't know if that means it allows custom fixes on the same level that 3Dvision does.

I just installed 425.31. Plan to ride this driver on my 3D Vision rig until the wheels fall off. It's been real, guys.

Tridef went out of business last year. They had both a regular and a VR version of their driver, obviously neither could save them. I think everyone who believes there is big money to make from a 3D driver is just delusional. Probably better to stop deceiving ourselves, 3D gaming for most people just is not the holy grail it is to us, it's just a small niche that is getting smaller every day. I had my eyes on VR for a while, but after trying a few times I just can't see myself strapping such a thing to my face on a regular basis. Also VR seems to be dying already too. Awfully reminds me of 3D already. A few years of hype, lots of money getting poured in, but then it fails to gain critical mass and slowly fades away. History might not repeat itself 1:1, but I'd be quite surprised if the fate of VR was much different from what we see happening with 3D right now. Most VR folks I've spoken to also absolutely loathe the idea of tacking VR onto what they call "pancake" games. The general consensus seems to be that VR is much more than just 3D. The VR crowd wants games made for VR that allow them to walk around in the game and grab and manipulate stuff etc., they don't want to play regular games in a VR headset.
The VR crowd wants games made for VR that allow them to walk around in the game and grab and manipulate stuff etc., they don't want to play regular games in a VR headset.
What I think (well, OK, mostly hope) will happen is that all our monitors will go virtual. VR systems already have the ability to show your desktop. Windows will want it to be rectangular but there's really no limit to the size, ratio, or number of your desktops can be if it's virtual. I think it would be better to have an Augmented Reality system doing it instead of VR so you can see your keyboard and whatnot but the principle is the same either way. Once you do that, there's no reason to keep the images "on" the monitor as 2D. It will be wasteful for the game to do all that 2D projection (twice) just so we can see it as it was in the first place inside the virtual space but it should work. So, if people want to play an old game and they don't have any real monitors, they might as well play it on a 3D virtual monitor.

AR will be a great boon if it gets good development and general support. Imagine online shopping where you can try out the product in your environment to see how it looks... eg, furniture.. clothes.. etc without leaving home.
