This doesn't work in games at all... What am I doing wrong?
1 / 2
Took the plunge and bought an EVGA GTX 480 and an Acer 120Hz monitor. I get everything hooked up and test the 3d hardware in the Nvidia tester, and it looked incredible. The Nvidia symbol was floating over my keyboard, and there was plenty of depth.
But, when I play a game (I tried Champions Online first, then Star Trek Online, then Avatar), I get NO 3d effect. Avatar just showed menus as double vision, and when I got into the game, no 3d effect. Well, actually, I do get some effect from the online games. The action seems to be taking place behind the HUD, but that is as far as the depth goes. The glasses were on (got dark and the emitter light turned bright), and I could read the text if I crossed my eyes really hard (which I can't do for long), but the game itself was totally unchanged. It looked the same with the glasses on or off (no separation). Same with the other games. No 3d effects at all. Do I have to set up profiles or something? I can't find an answer to this on the forums, so I had to sign up and ask. Sorry if it was asked and answered before.
Anyway, if this is all I am going to get out of this (a pretty demo), I am going to have to sell it off at a loss. Hell, this monitor went on sale for $70 off 3 days after I bought it. Glad I didn't buy three of them at once.
Thanks for any help,
Chunkhead

You have to enable the advanced keyboard options in the Nvidia Control Panel for 3D Vision. After that, you can use Ctrl-F5 and Ctrl-F6 to adjust Convergence, which will allow you to focus objects like text, HUD, overlays and objects, and also allow you to adjust pop-out effects. If you're getting a flat gaming experience, you want to adjust Depth which can be changed with the scroll wheel, but generally the greater the Depth, the more need to adjust Convergence to compensate. Some games that have crosshairs or text at screen-depth limit how much you can set Depth before things start breaking, so for those you typically have to go low depth and higher convergence. That should set you on your way, although there are still some games that do not handle 3D well with various post-process effects, or shadows and lighting that render in only a single eye or incorrectly. I don't know about the online games, but Avatar in 3D Vision is one of the best showcases of 3D.

Thanks for the ultra quick reply!
Nope. Doesn't help. Avatar does not change no matter how much I tune those settings (all the way up and down). There was one short cutscene that went 3d for a moment, then everything went back to 2d. The only thing in Avatar that changes is the HUD and subtitles. The subtitles float over my keyboard, but that doesn't make the game any more 3d. Geez, I don't know how to describe this. The graphics are unchanged from 2d to 3d. Isn't there supposed to be a double vision type thing going on? Other than one short cutscene, it all looks the same. Depth and convergence do nothing, except to the text and minimap.

did you go into the game settings and set it to 3D? There should be an option for Nvidia 3D Vision. I didn't have to set that as it kicked in automatically, but if configured correctly, the 3D effects in Avatar are unmistakable. Is the USB emitter green light on when the game starts?

Hey, an actual conversation going on in a forum! Neat!
Anyway, NO, I didn't know there was a 3d setting! But, yes, the glasses are working during gameplay. Whenever I start a game, they come on. But, yeah, that may be the problem. I will try it now and get back to you.

Ok, I set up the 3d in the game settings, and WOW!!!!!!! THAT is what I'm talkin' about!!!!
Thank you SOOOO much, bud. This is amazing, incredible, mind-bogglingly awesome stuff. I am not easily impressed, but this really did it for me. I think I am calling in sick tomorrow.
Now, I just have to figure out Star Trek and Champions...

Sometimes I find if a game is being difficult, simply disabling and reactivating the 3d in game usually forces it to kick in. (Crtl+T by default)
There are usally a few basic settings to check to make sure the 3d is gonna work.
Make sure you have the latest 3d drivers to insure you have the most up to date game profiles. (they will tell you what settings work best with 3d)
Display settings should be always be set 100 (or greater) Hz
There are certian effects that mostly always need to be disabled like Post processing, motion blur, Bloom and high quality shadows (mostly, but not always thankfully! I do like my shadow effects)
Even some of the 3d ready games require the ocasional graphical setting to be disabled.

Cryptic made City of Heroes using OpenGL. Chances are good they used it for Champions and Star Trek, too. That means doom. OpenGL isn't supported by the current drivers at all.
Edit: I checked and STO works just fine with 3D Vision. I did have to set it to the desktop resolution to get the 3D effect to kick in.

Once again, thanks for the quick reply.

Hey, an actual conversation going on in a forum! Neat!
Anyway, NO, I didn't know there was a 3d setting! But, yes, the glasses are working during gameplay. Whenever I start a game, they come on. But, yeah, that may be the problem. I will try it now and get back to you.
Thanks again!

Edit: I checked and STO works just fine with 3D Vision. I did have to set it to the desktop resolution to get the 3D effect to kick in.
