Did my emitter burning up? Really hot ... smells like burnt electronics ...
I got home from work today, booted up my pc, went ate the burger I got on the way home, came sat back at my computer, and noticed my emitter button wasn't glowing at all. Not green or red. So I grabbed it to check and see if it was plugged in, as I often unplug it, and not only was it plugged in ... it was hot. Not so hot I couldnt keep my hand on it but hot enough that if I did I would feel a faint burn. I unplugged it let it cool off and when i was going to plug it back in i took a close look at it, literally, and could smell that familiar odor of burnt electronics.

Well, I plugged it back in and the light came on so I took it for a quick test with geoforms and it worked for about 10 seconds then the glasse stopped but the emitter was till glowing bright green. I pressed the green button the image went out of 3d mode and back into 2d. Pressed it again it went back to 3d and the glasses came back on. Let it run for about 5 minutes and it seemed fine, the emitter isn't getting hot now either though and it has been plugged up for longer than it was since I booted the computer and discovered it so hot.

Anyone else know if this is normal?

Well played around with bioshock 2 a bit ... still dont like its not 3d readyness lol ... but so far so good not heat no electronics burning odor still working fine ... i wont be leaving this thing plugged at all ever when I am not using it ...

Anything guys? I am worried about this. I would like to go ahead and contact nVidia for an exchange if this is abnormal, which I am almost sure it is. The emitter down right reeks of burnt electronics ... which it never has before ... I am honestly shocked it is working, but I have to wonder if it will continue to work or will it crap out on me in the middle of something leaving me having to wait for a replacement to continue my game.

Hi,

I had the same problem about two weeks ago.
I have found that occasionaly my computer wont find the 3d emitter during bootup. This means that sometimes my windows bootup takes upto 3-4 mins. This is very slow as i bootup from ssd, and when i unplug the emitter, my pc will boot up in a few seconds.
Anyway i found that a couple of times it had not been connected during bootup, the green light would stay off. I went out for a bit came back to notice that the emitter was not green ( ihadnt noticed prior to these times). I touched the emitter and it was red hot both times (hot enough to make me think i could go on fire/melt if left much longer). This has not happened since as i now unplug my emitter and connect it just before gaming, as i dont want to come home one day to a house on fire.
It concerns me slightly to see that others have had this problem.

Phil.

Sounds about the same as what happened to me. I aswell dont leave it plugged if I am not using it. I too wondered if this thing could get hot enough to catch itself or something near it on fire if left like that or at the very least melt to my desk lol.

So I am assuming 2 weeks later and still no problems with the emitter functioning correct?

No, it's not normal.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you attempt to exchange the emitter. If it's since gone away, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

I too have had an issue with the emitter similar to this; though i don't think mine is heating up. Often when i start windows 7 the emitter will not be detected. Sometimes the green nvidia button will actually be the color blue, though more often it is the color red. What this means i haven't a clue. Unplugging the usb cable and plugging it back in corrects the problem and it works fine afterwords. It seems odd and it's a problem that occurs at seemingly random times during start up.

Is this a software issue or is my emitter failing? Should i exchange it for a new one?
