Please help me find 3d-capable laptop
Hello fellow 3D enthusiasts. My old Qosmio laptop has died and now I'm trying to find a replacement for it. Since no one sells 3D ready laptops these day, I guess my only choice is a laptop capable of pushing 3D to external monitor. Please advise what are my options if I want laptop with 900x GPU. Yes, I'm aware that non-optimus laptops could do that. I only know about ASUS G751x / SAGER / MSI Dominator (Probably Alienware?). Unfortunately these laptops weight so much it is impractical to move them around. (I do need to move my laptop every day between 2 locations). I also heard there are optimus laptops with Displayport attached to nvidia card that are 3d-capable as well. Does anyone know brand/model of such laptops? ( Could it be HP Omen or Lenovo? I know both MSI GS series and Gigabyte laptop have DP attached to Intel card) The perfect laptop would be a 15'' one with 970/980 gpu that doesn't immediately identifies owner as a gamer :) I would appreciate any ideas. P.S. I need some mobility, so desktop is out of question. P.S.P.S. Is it possible to buy used Alienware with 3d screen and upgrade GPU to 980m? I heard vBIOS on 980m doesn't support 3D on internal screen, but maybe there is a custom vBIOS that could solve it? Thinking of that as a backup plan.

If you only move between two locations, get 2 monitors/emitters/glasses/keyboards/mice and get a mini-itx PC such as this. http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/geforce-gtx-750-ti-mini-itx-pc-build-guide IF you want a handle on the case, try one of these. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517035 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112408 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139046

The biggest factor will be the video outputs that are connected directly to the Nvidia GPU. Say if the laptop has Display Port out but it connected to the Intel IGPU, you will not be able to use it for 3D Vision. If a VGA output is the only video output off of the Nvidia GPU, you'll be limited to using a projector. MSI is releasing a new line of Laptops with 4K screens running at 60Hz in 2D. To be able to run at that resolution and refresh rate, they need to be fairly beefy and should be adequate for an external stereoscopic display using 3D Vision or 3DTV Play, provided there's an available video output from the Nvidia GPU. http://www.kitguru.net/laptops/jon-martindale/msi-gs60-ghost-pro-confirmed-60hz-at-4k/ But otherwise I haven't seen any new laptops with integrated stereoscopic displays. Even Quadro workstation laptops seem to not have the option for them anymore.

Thanks for finding time to respond! That's what I'm looking for! A portable laptop with DP output connected to Nvidia card. I'm actually using MSI GS60 ghost pro right now. Nice lightweight laptop which is due for return because its DP connected to Intel GPU and no 3d vision possible :( Mini-ITX looks interesting, but not feasible in my situation. Hopefully I'm not the only one looking for modern 3d-capable laptop and someone else could share their experience.

Unfortunately the tech is dying... My best advice currently is to go to a big PC shop (where they have lots of laptops) and ask to show you all the Laptops with a GTX card inside;) Then use this picture for reference and see what is connected where;) Also I recommend reading this guide if you haven't already: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/571045/-tutorial-review-3d-vision-on-external-monitor-using-an-active-adapter-displayport-to-dl-dvi/ Cheers!

I came across an article stating that Maingear will use "Desktop Skylake CPUs" in a laptop. Might be worth looking into. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/maingear-nomad-15-announcement,30358.html

Answering my own question: Both SLI and G-sync tech are not compatible with Optimus. So pretty much every laptop that has SLI graphics or G-sync display is capable of 3D vision on external monitor. Good option are Clevo laptops (branded Sager in US). Here, for example laptop with 980M weighting only 5.5lb: http://www.sagernotebook.com/Gaming-Notebook-NP8658-S.html Personally, I purchased this one: http://www.sagernotebook.com/Gaming-Notebook-NP9758-S.html It weights a little more, but has upgradable GPU and desktop CPU.

Please let us know how it works out for you and which display you end up using. Keep in mind that if the only input on the Display is Dual Link DVI, you'll need an "active" adapter if you GPU output is display port. So the better option might be a display with a Displayport input. Though previously, I haven't heard of problems with Display Port inputs on 3D vision monitors, this post was made just an hour ago.
I have Benq XL2420TX, when using DP cable - I have this sync off problem in all games, rly dunno why, DVI-D connection is free of such a problem. and yes, if u have more than one display plugged in, u need to use only one (win+P), reinstalling OS might help as well
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/892309/3d-vision-resetting-losing-synch-/?offset=4#4714792
