I can't be the only person who's noticed this.
When I turn my 3d vision 2 glasses sideways, they block the light from the monitor completely. They also make it very difficult to use my phone (Galaxy S2). Does anyone know why the glasses have some kind of polarisation in addition to the shutters?

You're right, they're polarized. Active shutter glasses have two polarized filters, and the LCD in the glasses uses polarization to block light or let it though. This link explains it:
