Built-in Emitter not showing up in device manager
Hi people,

I recently bought an Asus G74SX-3DE with built in Emitter.
The problem is that I can't seem to get it to work.

The 3D vision controller doesn't show up under the USB devices in the Device Manager.
I've tried several times to install the drivers, doing a clean install, etc... When I install the 3D Vision Controller Driver, the setup ends with the message:
"The InstallShield Wizard has succesfully installed NVIDIA 3D Vision Controller Driver but failed to detect the driver service. Please check the device connection."
I have the feeling that my emitter is broken. Is there a way to verify that?

I'm using the latest driver (Verde 280.26)

Thanks in advance,

Declan

The emitter is controlled by the monitor. There is no entry in the device manager.

Hmmm. That seems logical.

But what do I need to do to enabled the 3d then?
I've been staring at the 'Enable 3D vision' screen for quite some time now, but I have no clue what option I need to choose (USB IR Emitter and Glasses, Wired Glasses, Pro hub and Glasses)

The manual says the following:

Launch the 3D Vision Setup wizard by clicking on Start Menu > NVIDIA Corporation > 3D Vision > Enable 3D Vision.

Select Next to begin the Setup Wizard. The Wizard is very intuitive and easy to follow.

Select your gaming environment

3D Ready display found.

Turn on your glasses.

Test your hardware setup.
Problem is, I'm stuck at step 2.

Any insight?

I think the driver fails to detect that your monitor has an intergrated emitter.

Make sure that you're using a proper dual-link DVI cable to connect the computer with the monitor. Most DVI cables on the market are NOT Dual-Link!

You should also see that the monitor is listed in the device manager using the correct name (not a standard "Plug and Play" monitor or something like that) and you should be able to run the desktop on 120Hz (with 1920x1080).

    Hrmm... Laptop.

    Forgot to mention that :D

EDIT: I viewed the monitor in the device manager and it does indeed say PnP. Not good.

Well, in that case, you have to contact ASUS' customer support. It's their machine, they know exactly what to do.

BTW, you might want to try the latest GeForce driver from ASUS own web site (for your model). It might very well be, that generic drivers don't work properly with your intergrated 3D emitter.

    Hi

I just sent customer support an email.

I also downloaded the drivers from the asus members site. Can't seem to get it to work yet. Guess I'll just have to wait for their reply.

BTW, When it finally works, how do I enable it (e.g. What option do I need to choose in the 3D vision enabling-screen?)

Ok so I contacted Asus support, they told me I had to do a BIOS flash.

Did that, updated to ver 203. Now, when I press the ROG-button, a flash thing pops up telling me 3d is enabled.

In the manual, it says I then need to use the "Enabled 3D vision" option. Which option should I choose?

    thanks,

Declan, you might want to update to version 285.62, released a few days ago. I'm not familiar with this card but I am with the Nvidia Control Panel, accessed by right-clicking on the desktop. Once there, go to "Manage 3D Settings" and make sure you have set "Stereo Enabled" to "On" since it is set to "Off" by default. Also, make sure the display refresh rate is set 120Hz (in "Change Resolution") since I believe it also defaults to 60Hz, both of which will defeat 3D. That should kick-start the emitter and glasses. You might want to play around with other settings in there to tweak things to your preferences. Good luck!

    Hi

I'll have a look at the new driver, however, I have the feeling that Asus adds something to their specific drivers, so it will work with their screens/emitters.

I already set the refresh rate to 120Hz, and I also tried enabling the 3D through the nvidia control panel. This brings me to the setup wizard, but I have no idea what option to chose, as there is no option for built-in emitters.

A couple of questions, Declan - what are the options you are getting and have you worked your way through them? From my Quadro-only experience, once my settings are adjusted properly in the Nvidia Control Panel, firing up a 3D application always triggers the emitter. Have you tried running a 3D app/game or watching 3D content (see http://www.3dvisionlive.com/ or http://3dtv.at/Index_en.aspx or http://www.crema.co.uk/ or Nvidia's own http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-photo-viewer.html)? I often use OpenGL Stereo Viewer from crema.org to quickly test whether 3D is operating correctly. Keep us posted.

I just installed the 285.62 driver.
I opened the Nvidia Control Panel and it was already enabled, but the only option was the 3D Discover one.
I disabled it to try to get stereoscopic to work. Same results.
Do you have any idea whether I actually need to go into the "Enable 3D Vision" wizard for a built-in emitter?

Also went to the 3D vision live website, but it only worked when I had the discover option enabled.

Is it ok that my device manager says "Generic PnP Monitor"?

How should a built-in emitter show up in the device manager?

    -Declan

p.s. Take a look at the screen capture in the attachment - it only shows "3D Vision Discover".

EDIT: Some additional info: I just read the Nvidia 3d vision quick start guide, It said that if you had a built-in emitter, there should be a shortcut " Set up 3D Vision" on your desktop. I didn't have one.

Thanks for the sceen grab - those always help! I noticed that the "Enable Stereoscopic 3D" box was unchecked, though you mentioned that you had checked that box previously to no effect. Can you check that box again, then click the "Run Setup Wizard" and describe what happens? Are you still stuck in the Red/Blue 3D Discover mode? Does the emitter never glow more brightly? (Also, are your shutter glasses charged? Just want to remove that variable.) The Discover mode usually only happens when the display runs at a 60Hz refresh rate, requiring the red/blue glasses. Are you unable to get through the Wizard or does the Wizard ONLY work in Discover mode? I'm sure there's something relatively simple preventing you from getting 120Hz 3D and we just need to track it down. I'll try to download your manual and see if there are any other tips in there. Sorry for the frustration - hopefully it will be worth it!

I never really saw the field below the "Enable Stereoscopic 3D" active (non-greyed-out), because whatever button I click (either "Enable Stereoscopic 3D" or "Run Setup Wizard") it always opens the setup wizard.

Do you have any idea where I am supposed to set the screen and emitter (In the control panel or in the setup wizard?)
I think it should be in the greyed out control panel field, because the setup wizard simply doesn't show an option for built-in emitters.

I also never saw the emitter glow.
I charged the glasses the first day and the battery indicator still shows a green light. (meaning it's fully charged)

In the meantime, all Asus tech support can tell me is, I quote:
"When you are still having problems with the 3D function best you can try a recovery of Windows."
    Yeah-that ought to get it working /wallbash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wallbash:' />

Declan - my apologies for deserting you. I've had to finish up some work items and have not had a chance to return to this. Any luck lately? Do you still have this PC? ;-)

You've done everything you need to do it seems. I did download the manual and saw that there's a "3D Mode Switch key" just to the left of the Power button in the upper right corner of the keyboard - does toggling that on/off do anything? The manual also states that this only works when you've actually got a 3D app running so it sounds like you start the game/movie/wizard/etc. and then press the 3D button to activate the IR. (on page 45: "3D Mode Switch Key (on 3D models) - Toggles to activate the 3D mode function and again to switch back to 2D mode. This function is only available when playing a 3D video game or watching a 3D movie.")

You mention ROG-button in post #8 - is that the same as the 3D Mode Switch button or something different? I couldn't find "ROG" in the manual.
