Hi all,
I've been trying to use 3DMigoto to activate compatibility mode in Durante's optimized PC-port of Trails of Cold Steel, but somehow can't pull it off. The game hit GOG and Steam yesterday.
Hopefully my fellow Falcom fan, masterotaku, can find the time to take a quick look at it :)
I'm as sick of the japanese highschool setting (Persona, etc.) as the next guy, but Cold Steel is perfectly tolerable, cause it has a military academy/political background, amazing world building and a bunch of field trips :P
The game's one of my favourite RPGs in years and imo has the perfect combat system.
If you like JRPGs, please also try the Trails in the Sky-Series, which works almost flawlessly in 3D, after tweaking the convergence.

lol. I wish Durante were into 3D too. He would be of help about getting port teams to hear about our demands.
That said, I still have to buy and play the Trails in the Sky games before this one (I have been waiting for a bigger than 50% discount on GOG), and I've just been gifted Tales of Berseria.
Is Trails of Cold Steel too broken in real 3D? If it's shadows what is broken, can you post their pixel shader here? Maybe we can help without having the game.

Hey there ^^
It's a DX11 game and real 3D wouldn't even kick in.
I've then tried to use 3DMigoto for the 1st time and watched Helifax' video on how to activate compatibility mode, but to no avail.
You owe it to yourself to grab the complete Legend of Heroes series on GOG, but I can get you Cold Steel as a gift for starters (friend request sent) :D

I'm working on this game right now. Once forced fullscreen in 3Dmigoto, the game is 100% perfect in 3D for now, in the first few hours I played (shadows, battle effects, ambient occlusion, some water that doesn't even have reflections, etc).
I was gifted this game, so I feel that I should do whatever it takes to improve the experience. What I'm doing is extra options (all of this with hotkeys too):
- Convergence presets.
- HUD depth and toggle (the content of the HUD is garbled if you enter a battle with it at depth, though, but it's safe to use in all other situations).
- Black bars toggle for cutscenes.
- Depth of field toggle. I can't just discard the effect, you you will see the covered area at the resolution of the effect, which is lower than native if you don't enable the high quality setting (but before a future update, high quality kills your fps, even with my hotkey enabled).
- "Sky" bloom presets. I don't like this kind of bloom that only affects the upper part of the screen.
- Bloom presets for other elements (windows, lamps, etc).
- Gamma presets (seven for the moment). There isn't an option for this neither in the launcher or ingame, and I coincidentally found the shader and it's easy to modify, so I made the option.
I'll release this "fix" soon, tomorrow or the day after. I could do it today, but I want to check compatibility with the update that hopefully should arrive to GOG tomorrow. Thanks again for the game, Gryzor.
Edit: spoke too soon about perfection. I've just fixed water in a swimming pool :p. So yeah, something needed a fix!

I've finally managed to run it in 3D, after forcing fullscreen in 3DMigoto.
Previously, I figured that forcing it wasn't necessary, since it was already activated in the game's settings.
Having played up to the "Celdic" field study area, it looks absolutely amazing and flawless in 3D Vision :)
Thanks for your feedback and I hope you're enjoying the game as much as I do.

A lot! I like it more than I expected.
By the way, here's the fix: https://s3.amazonaws.com/masterotaku/Trails+of+Cold+Steel/Trails_of_Cold_Steel_3D_Vision_fix.7z
At least with GOG Galaxy there are some random times where the game doesn't enable 3D. I think it may be because Galaxy sometimes steals the focus when it synchronizes my saves with the cloud. Restarting the game fixes it easily.
The only fixed effect is water in the swimming pool of the school. I've reached another city yesterday and for now there isn't any other effect that needs a fix. Once I play more and confirm everything is correct, I'll make the blog post.
Hotkeys:
- F1: convergence presets.
- F2: HUD depth presets. Don't make it be at depth when you enter a combat or fishing.
- F3: HUD toggle (not the minimap and some other stuff, because it could disable some unintended things).
- F4: depth of field toggle. Not disabled by default.
- F5: black bars toggle. It's part of the HUD. This hotkey removes pure black content of certain parts of the screen. Because of that, some text at the bottom (like talking button prompts) will lose its shadow, and you may see some artifacts while fishing.
- F6: sky bloom presets. Not disabled by default. Presets are disabled, x0.5 and x1.
- 2 (not the numpad): bloom of some objects (lamps, windows, some grass, some water). Not disabled by default. Presets are disabled, x0.5 and x1. The effect may still appear in some cutscene transitions.
- 3 (not the numpad): gamma multiplier. Not modified by default. Presets are x1.3, x1.2, x1.1, x1, x0.9, x0.8, x0.7.

New version (same link as before): https://s3.amazonaws.com/masterotaku/Trails+of+Cold+Steel/Trails_of_Cold_Steel_3D_Vision_fix.7z
This contains more water fixes, including one in the academy that I missed first.
As before, I don't know if more water issues will appear in the future. I'm at the start of chapter 3 (out of 7).
Thank you for fixing the remaining water shaders and pushing the UI into depth, along with providing various presets!
I'm on my 3rd playthrough and it feels like I'm finally experiencing the perfect version - so happy ^^
Just a word of warning about the irresistible cliffhanger at the end: Once you've beaten Cold Steel 1, you'll definitely wish 2 was available right away ;)

They are working on the PC port for the second game right now. Hopefully it will be released before the end of the year.
Still at chapter 3. I'm a bit about GOG not getting any updates yet. I want to check if one of them fixed HUD corruption when entering a battle with HUD at depth, because the changelog said that it fixed some HUD corruption issues.
Once the turbo feature is out of beta for the Trails in the Sky games, I hope they update the GOG builds and make a good sale so I can buy them :p.

55 played hours (although turbo speeds up the counter), and I'm at the schoolhouse in chapter 4 still.
Same link as always, I have updated the fix: https://s3.amazonaws.com/masterotaku/Trails+of+Cold+Steel/Trails_of_Cold_Steel_3D_Vision_fix.7z
I fixed more water (up to the beginning of chapter 4), fixed a fire effect in chapter 3 (torches at night) and caught more bloom effects for the hotkey.
New experimental hotkey:
- 4: it's a toggle that changes the gamma to make the top of the screen brighter and the bottom darker, trying to compensate TN gamma shift. I made it just for fun.
Attention: I made the fix compatible with SpecialK. You can get it here:
https://github.com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/releases
Download the "SpecialK_ToCS.7z" (or just click https://github.com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/releases/download/sk_0_8_17/SpecialK_ToCS.7z).
In "dxgi.ini", delete this part:
[Import.ReShade]
Architecture=Win32
Filename=ReShade32.dll
Role=Unofficial
When=PlugIn
Or else the game will always crash.
Now you can play with HD textures, have a nice fps limiter, etc. The game may crash on boot sometimes (white screen in my case), but it will eventually boot, like 50-60% of the time.
There is some bloom that appears in cutscene transitions that I couldn't catch yet, but it isn't too annoying.
