I know. I'm just blown away by the quality of the gameplay video. If the game looks as smooth, detailed, with the draw distances shown on the clip, on the current gen consoles, when released next month, I will be very impressed. :)
Console lifespan is short? What planet are you from?
The 360 and PS3 are about 8 years old, and going strong. How many new graphics cards have you gone through in the last 8 years? They'll also both continue being supported for a few more years at least.
As for controllers, they're obviously not more accurate. But they're certainly better for some types of games.
I don't get all the fuss about consoles vs PC. I have a 360, PS3, high end gaming PC, and I plan to pick up a PS4 6-12 months after launch. Maybe an xbone after that, if they lure me with enough interesting exclusives. Though I'd prefer exclusives didn't exist, and all major releases came to PS4/xbone/pc.
I think you are completely missing the point Pirate guy, and for future reference, I am from planet Earth.
I am talking about the future life of consoles. Consoles are machines dedicated purely for gaming. With incredibly powerful phones, tablets etc, and with PC's always ahead of the curve there is less and less need for dedicated consoles.
As soon as Apple/Google release a decent console system via their handsets and wifi controllers, I really will be surprised if there will be a market for consoles. Many top business analyses believe that this is either the last or penultimate generation of dedicated consoles. Most people won't be able to justify a console purchase when their TV, Phone, Tablet can run amazing graphics (all it needs now is amazing games which if you look the quality is always rising) and by then cloud computing and internet based gaming really could be a reality for most people.
But anyway, just because you mis-understood me, no need to jump quite so hard. This was not a console vs pc post. It was simply giving an educated rational as to why I believe (know) that GTA V will come onto the PC platform.
As for GTA V not coming to xbox one or PS4...The biggest game of the year will surely be released on the new consoles when they come out.. It would be insane for them not too. And they have stated they will support it 'significantly'.

Apologies, I misunderstood you.
As for Apple though - I'm not sure they've got enough credibility with gamers to really take off, if they tried to launch a "real" gaming console (as opposed to a new appletv that supported basic gaming apps). It costs a lot of money to get into that kind of market, and success is far from guaranteed.

Apology accepted :-)
I don't think apple needs any credibility to dominate the games market though. Despite some signs of a waning appetite for small games , there are still a multitude of 'social games' that make multiples more in profits than even massive hitters such as COD. All apple or android would have to release is a compatible controller that connects wirelessly to your handsets/ tablets. Minimal costs, minimal risks. Google are showing signs they are about to do this (patents on controllers etc). When they do, I think we can kiss goodbye to a large % of people willing to spend money in expensive dedicated consoles. Especially when you see some of the FPS' available on the ipad... they really look amazing.
Which is why I believe there is so much new interest from almost every developer and publisher into the PC format. Which is why I am quite sure that Rockstar also made their statement about commitment to PC on all future games. So I am sure GTA V will come to PC (even if it's 6-12 months after console launch).
So lets all just get excited that whether you play on console or PC, we will all have a chance to play this, hopefully, amazing game on the platform of our choice and in 3D! woop :-)

While what can be played on a 'bare bones PC' today is rather amazing compared to 10yrs ago the AMD/Intel dedicated graphics are not there yet. Sadly the Android market is to fragmented and low powered for consideration. Apple mobile devices are less fragmented but are currently even lower powered than the Android mobile devices.
I think MS was going in the right direction on the XB-One in their attempts to be more than just a dedicated gaming device which may shield their sales in 5yrs when other handheld devices start to catch up in performance and a catalog of AAA games start to become available for them.
IMHO the company that releases a device or series of devices into a rich ecosystem that allows you to play the same game on a big screen, laptop, tablet and a pocket friendly handheld device will start and finish whatever 'platform war' there is or was.
Nintendo could of released the 3DS-XL with dual sticks and wove its use as a secondary controller+screens for its failed WiiU but gave us a underpowered box+single overpriced screen to contend with. MS could of introduced cross platform play+control with WIN8+XBone+Winphone but completely missed the idea+concept+chance. Sony is giving us PS3/PS4+Vita play but don't have desktop or tablet systems to complement them with.
IMHO my bets are with Apple and a "iGame store". (I mean, they have to do SOMETHING to counter falling market shares in all their key markets)

I can't see an Apple/Android console being that much of a success. There just isn't the market for it. As mentioned above, some casual games may out sell AAA titles but they are casual games and casual games require a TV which show programmes like: Teen Mum, Man V Food or some other nonsense. (OK Man v Food is awesome!)
My wife complains of RSI because of the ammount of time she puts into Candy Crush Saga but I have never seen her sit down and play without something else going on in the background.
There has already been at least one kickstarter project which has failed on release. If you want to game seriously you are going to game on a powerful machine not on something powered by ARM processors. I bought GTA3 on my Xperia S and it sucks.
I cannot see any point of a middle ground here. I *can* see the point of the vision of XBone but as the Edge Magazine said, it's five years too soon; the world is neither ready for it nor does it want it.

Gta 3 on the ipad is as smooth as butter. Also some of the gameloft games, and ifinity blade 1 & 2 show that the graphical capabilities of these devices are huge. You are right that many games are only enjoyable while doing something else, but if you could plug in your phone/tablet into your tv and use your xbox/ps3 style controller to play console games, i think it would be a lot harder to justify spending £450 on a dedicated console. All the other stuff XBone offeres is integrated into top tv's anyway, and the tv companies will keep improving this tech every year. I don't know if I will buy a console this time around (the first time I have questioned whether to buy a generation of consoles ever!). And with the future looking so bright for multiplatfor PC releases, the reasons just got less.
Whatever the case, I think there is a very good reason MS strategy appears to have changed. The idea of people gaming in the lounge is sn oumoded concept. People game everywhere. If we could play our favourite games on our tablet on the train, jump on our main pc, play the same game (cranked to max with 3D on and save files shared via the cloud) and then sit in the lounge and play the same game with a wireless controller connected to your phone which is wirelessy sending hdmi signal to your tv, things could be awesome... And would have no need for another standalone gaming console. We will see, i think they still have a good 7-10 years left, but not much more, but maybe you are right.
What I am sure about though is that I will be purchasing GTA V, cranking everything to max, enabling 3D and enjoy my PC crumbling under the unoptimised PC code! Unless as cookybiscuit says, this is more like Max Payne 3 rather than GTA IV. Fingers crossed ;-)

Nvidia has to "sponsor" it as MP3 was.
Sponsoring can be a real double edged sword on a game as open world as GTA5 because features/everything/optimization. Games that are sponsored, yes ussually look awesome... but they have a high chance of running like crap. Which is huge on a massive open world game like GTA5.
TBH, modders on a game that runs well ussually do a better job at half the cost. Look at GTA4 with graphic mods/ skyrim/ fallout series/ etc.

GTA is one of those games that has so many incidental objects (rubbish, peds, cars, animals, leaves etc.) that you need a beastly CPU to calculate all the actors as well as the need of a weighty GPU to render the textures and models etc. Double so for S3D I found. (It's seems like the CPU also needs to calculate everything twice!)
GTAs and TES games tend to make me want to delve into the overdraft for a major hardware upgrade. Another one on a teacher's salary. Two young mouths to feed too. (Violins please.)
@Foreverseeking
Apple clearly have one up on Sony/Android there then! NFS also is ropey on Android (played on my Xperia as well as on an Galaxy Tab II), have you tried that on your ipad?

I haven't played those sorry Andysonofbob, but I have a couple of other racing games that run very smoothly with very good solid, low end xbox 360 graphics. If you look at the landscape of android devices, there are 12,000 or something like that itinerations of hardware. It really doesn't surprise me at all that things run better on apple vs android devices despite benchmarks showing apple to be lower powered. Just a shame the functionality isn't very good... still holding out on a windows tablet in a similar form that has an equivalent battery life before I can boot Apple out of the door.
And your a fellow teacher? haha, then you know my pain! I have a budget for upgrades that is laughable. But eventually it slowly builds into something worth while. I imagine that my I7 2.8 will struggle with GTA V (overclocked before, but it became unstable after a year). Bloody good job it likely won't hit PC till 2014 when an upgrade may be due and affordable!

Steam says I have 250 hours in GTA4, and I also played another 125 hours on XBox before it came out on PC, so I'm hoping GTA5 is closer to GTA4. :->
I could never seem to stick to the story, and would play a game I called Ruckus. That's when I could not control my antisocial tendencies and would drive down the sidewalk or set fire to a cop car. The ensuing chases were always amusing, and I'd find I played 3 days in a row without advancing the story. I certainly hope there is no truth to the idea that playing GTA will turn you into a criminal.
As far as games go, it's my personal belief that the hardware doesn't really matter, the games do. It's all about the software and how well it uses the hardware. There are compelling games on all platforms, when they take advantage of the platform itself.
The reason I run a PC is for S3D. If the Xbox or PS would do compelling 3D, I'd run those, but pickings are sparse.
S3D is almost magical in that it can take a game that might otherwise not be that interesting on the PC, and transform it into something genuinely fun and entertaining.

I meant in terms of port quality. MP3 had DX11, 3D support, high res textures etc. GTA 4 is second to Saints Row 2 for the worst PC game I've played.
Though as you say, it's a fantastic game. It seems to never get boring, you can hop on free mode and lose hours doing what you thought would just be a quick 5 minute game. It's too bad RDR didn't come to PC because it had similar qualities, though the single player was far better in my opinion the online wasn't quite as good.

I think chances are very good for a PC release. PS3 and 360 are going to become obsolote very quickly, so GTA5 sales will probably drop off sharply next year. PC will likely be a good way for Rockstar to get more mileage out of it.
I bet 5k gta V will be on PC. I also read that every future title would be on PC but maybe not past (RDR).
I love GTA, but i do hope the next is more fun than gta IV. I know I'm in the minority here, but I found the game mechanics to not be hugely fun. Despite being 'less' of a game overall, i actually preferred and had more fun with Just Cause 2 (and I normally LOVE a good story).

I respected how much effort went into the quality voice acting and screenplay, but it kind of made the game not sit well with me, since the characters were all psychopaths.
Just Cause 2 has abysmal script and horrible voice acting, and just feels like a cartoon, and is a barrel of laughs as a result. GTA4 on the other hand just became depressing to me. Also, I missed all the wacky side missions from the earlier ones.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

@Foreverseeking

Yeah, I totally agree. I never ended up finishing GTA4.
