Planar Stereomirror DIY setup. Make your own for $x,xxx less

Sounds like your monitors have either both 0°/90° polarization, which is mirrored to the same angle, or one has 45° and the other 135°.
As a result both pictures have same polarization and can be seen troug the same filters...
What do you see without mirroring?
Are both images viewable at the same angle - then they should be 0/90°
If only one is visible per eye they could be one at 45° and the other at 135°, so after turning one by 90° they have the same polarization direction...

This is just a bump to get this back on the forum (why only 2 pages of posts?)

I got an 8800GT (yes, I know), but since I haven't got around to building a proper Planar mount and I lost what was left of my cardboard anaglyph glasses I couldn't do 3D if I wanted to right now (well, besides the old "nose in" regular mirrored setup, or the "cross my eyes and sit back 3 feet" methods).

I sincerely hope that drivers are forthcoming, and not just Vista, plech.

Not to mention the need for a commercial passive 3D setup cheaper than $500, HMD or direct-view. Minimum 1024x768 for HMD, 1280x1024 for a monitor. Preferably a wide-screen 19" for cost-effectiveness.

The real tragedy is lack of multi-monitor 3D for flight sims. The immersion possible with these 3-way SLI cards is just wasted, completely wasted. And this trend of games that won't play on current main (and high-end) hardware is just bad.

Well, enough rambling, I have already edited my top post to reflect the "locally sourced" mirror, my previous recommendation of a plastic mirror wasn't the best for all, it was found to sag in the middle with a large setup, and was more expensive and incurred shipping charges compared to a local glass shop. I haven't yet checked my own local shop, but I plan to when I source a bit of bent square tubing for the monitor mount. And one of these happens: Either proper stereo drivers, OR I find a 512MB 7900/7950 series card that can clock to 650-700 mhz.

Hi zebrastealer

Just wondering how you went on with your aluminium frame set up, any chance of some pictures as it sounds like it would be a similar best case scenario set up for myself?

Cheers, Optical10

I have mount a planar system using a teleprompter mirror and a box, but I have two problems:

1) If I use 162.50 driver + 162.50 beta stereo driver I have not the posibility to choose planar or any other stereo type, only anaglyph. I have revised HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NvCplApi\Policies, and ContextUIPolicy is with 1 by default.
This is strange, because if I use a CRT monitor I have more options types aviables, and now using two 19" ViewSonic widescreen LCD monitors I have this problem.
I suppose that not, because I can use 94.24 combo without this problem, but opengl games doesn´t work and some directx with more problems.

2) Any way to rotate the 2nd monitor (but only the 2nd) in clone mode?. I say this because using planar setup, the monitor in the top reflects the image in the mirror in 45º, and my monitor has not a good view angle if it is viewed from down, so the image reflected is too dark. If I could rotate 180º the monitor, it would reflect the image to the mirror just located like if viewing the monitor from up to down, with a very better viewable capacities. I suppose it happend with all monitors, because they are built thinking in a view position of the human eye located higher than the center of the screen.

Hi mopheta,

regarding the driver, try adding this to your registry ...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D]
"ShowAllViewerTypes"=dword:FFFFFFFF

This is what Zalman does to enable all stereo options in nVidia drivers.

Oruq

I was having a problem determining if my LCD monitors were suitable for a DIY planar 3-D setup because there isn't a list of compatible monitors so you have to use the polarised glasses to test for monitor suitability. But which glasses do you order 0/90° or 45/135°?

in my case - Problem solved I think because of the very kind chap who posted a DIY 3-D planar project called the TARDIS in the UK sent me a pair of cardboard glasses which i was able to use on both monitors to confirm that they are 45° polarisation, that is to say that in either direction of left and right one of the lenses turns black at 45°. I take it this means that I have to order a pair of 45/135° instead of the usual 0/90° glasses that he kindly sent me?

If you guys can confirm I have made the right choice of glasses (45/135°) I'm good to go for ordering the glass, second identical monitor etc to get my project started, thank you.

Optical10

PS I had to LOL when I remembered that my Dell 24 inch monitor can physically rotate 90° meaning that I didn't have to do tilt the glasses on my head to test the monitor, how weird it would be to do your gaming at 45°, if you are crazy enough!

The 45/135° are the ones to get.
There's is a lot of good info in this thread.
Officially there's not going to be any future Nvidia drivers for planar setup (and other) as Nvidia has teamed up with Zalman, but You probably know that.

Hi Freke1

I am bit confused at the moment about these angles so I've included some photographs to show you what happens to the 45/135° glasses I was lent when I place them in front of that monitors.

As you can see I seem to be working at a different angle with these monitors so does that mean I need to be 0/90° lens glasses or do I need to purchase two new monitors that work with the 45/135° glasses?

Any help appreciated, Cheers Optical10

PS
If I'm looking at having to purchase new monitors it looks like the Zalman monitor is the one to go for but I heard that they're not as good as the Planar setups because of the shutter glass technology, as the shutter glass is doesn't support many of the new special effects in gaming like post processing etc because the new forthcoming Vista NVIDIA drivers are currently restricted in their development?

Looking at the pics I'm afraid Your monitor wont work.
In a planar setup like this:
http://www.wow3d.de/3d-stahl-display.html
the top monitor is rotated 180 degree and mirrored in the telepromter mirror.
Only if the polarization of the monitors is 45 degree will the mirroring flip the polarization 90 degree.

So when You look at the monitor You want to use in a planar setup with the 45/135 glasses on, one eye should be clear as day and one eye should be black as night.
You need 2 new monitors from what I can tell from Your pics.

The Zalman monitor uses polarized glasses and You are correct, the Nvidia 3D driver is not as good as iZ3D's 3D driver. You will have to use the old free Nvidia driver with Your planar setup so there will be no postprocessing effects. Officially Nvidia are not going to update their free 3D driver like they did until 1 1/2 years ago.

You can use the new iZ3D driver to play in 3D on Your current system today with red and blue glasses if You deceide to wait and see what the future brings. Also it would cost only ~50$ to buy a 19" CRT monitor and shutterglasses on ebay.

Doing this does not give me other options, only anaglyph. I´ve test with 162.15 and 162.50 stereo drivers, and there is no difference, stereo3d works but only with anaglyph mode.

It is curiouse that if I plug the CRT monitor and unplug the two TFTs then I can choose all stereo3d types (now I am with CRT and shutterglasses).

This is incredible, I can choose planar type and all types if I use only my CRT monitor. If I use my CRT and a second TFT monitor I can choose all types too. But if I use two TFTs I only can choose anaglyph.
This only happend whith 16x.xx stereo drivers. With 9x.xx I can use the two TFTs without problem in planar mode.

Anybody can use two TFTs in planar mode with 16x.xx stereo drivers?.

Later drivers do support all modes like they did before. They don't seem to recognize all monitors/projectors and that results in having the anaglyph option only. I don't know about a workaround for this but i have two vga-tv-converters attached to the comp. (to do stereorecordings on vcr's). When i have them attached i have all options in the drivers. Connecting the iz3d for example removes everything but the anaglyph mode.
The difference: The iz3d is connected with dvi connectors and the vga-tv-converters with vga... Maybe that's why it works.

cheers

They are Viewsonic VA1716w tft 19" monitors, and only have VGA (not DVI). They are with drivers installed, and Windows XP recognize the monitors.

Previous stereo drivers (I´ve tried 9x.xx) works fine with the monitors and gives me all stereo types, so may be anything new in the 16x.xx stereo beta drivers.

I decided (I know, I am not zebrastealer) to use wood, it came out rather nicely.

I don't like this new plan to ditch Planar support (well duh), I can only think that these Zalman monitors had better cost under $500 for a 19" and have perfect picture quality in 2D mode, otherwise it just won't be cost-effective.

I just got back to stereo gaming and have my two Hitachi/Planar screens on DVI with the 162.50 pair (7900GS, I might try the 8800GT again, but I think it isn't well supported). I did do a trick to get all resolutions (so I can run 1280x720, 1280x768 and 1280x960) : http://wikitechia.org/wiki/The_custom_reso...cannot_be_added

I can try Dual VGA later (VGA mode only allows black bars on the top and bottom at 1:1 pixel resolutions, that means 800x600 and 1024x768 modes will be all stretched.), I also need to post some pics of my new bracket.

The new monitor/mirror stand is great, it is fully adjustable for angle (both the tilt of the whole arrangement as well as the angle between the screens, the mirror holding arms currently rest on the lower monitor, but think I can make an adjustable setup), is made mostly of wood with a little aluminum and some corner brackets. The cost is fairly reasonable and there is no welding. The only tools needed are a drill, screwdriver, saw, and crescent wrench (sandpaper and a file are highly recommended).
