Thief 3 Deadly shadows in 3d game tweaks to make it work better
  1 / 2
Running Thief 3 in 3d:

This was done on winXP with a geForce GTX7800 using driver 77.77, but much info here should be useful for a 3d-vision system on Vista.

Recently I put some effort into getting Thief 3 Deadly Shadows to work good in 3d and I was a little surprised at the progress I was able to make. This game has some issues that need to be overcome and then you need to find some good 3d settings for it. You may want to make a backupcopy of DEFAULT.INI and T3UI.ini before you start changing things.

1) Make sure that Bloom is disabled.
Bloom causes what I call a dual-mono effect in 3d mode in which each eye gets its own view but the views are identical so that the 3d effect is like a flat image at a variable depth. No good.

2) Disable motion blur.
This game tries to do a motion blur effect when you turn left/right. That causes a temporary change of depth problem in 3d mode so disable itby editing DEFAULT.INI in the game's SYSTEM folder and change the [FLESH] section to this. (thanks to a ttlg.com forum on thief-3 tweaking)

[Flesh]
; TTP 26348 - set light and shadow intensity tolerances to zero will impede performance,
; but it will fix this bug. They were 10 & 30, respectively. Ian and John Talley will attempt
; some optimizations later.
LightIntensityTolerance=10
ShadowIntensityTolerance=30
StaticVPScale=100
DynVPScale=3000
DynVPMinRotationRate=3000
Overbright=True
Multisample=0
UseNewConversion=True
MaxAnisotropy=0
MipFilter=2
MouseLagThreshold=0
RemapRogueUVs=false
UVThreshold=500
MouseLagThreshold=0

3) Disable the overlay for the zoom-in/out function of your mechanical eye.
This function also causes a temporary change of depth problem in 3d.

[CameraOverlays]
EnableCameraOverlays=true
CameraOverlay_0__t=0

If some other overlay causes problems in 3d, you may want to change true to false above.

You can try 3d at this point and see how you like it but I recomend more mods:

Changing the HUD:
I think some of the HUD elements are at a bad depth (too far so bring them closer), but if you want to get rid of that element then find it and change Active=VISIBLE to Active=NOT.

Moving HUD items:
You can also move things around by changing BOTTOM to TOP or LEFT to RIGHT but it might wind up off-screen unless you also change another value. For example to put the compass at the top, edit T3UI.ini and find [CompassWindow], then change Placement_Y=BOTTOM to TOP and change Pos_Y=-50 to Pos_Y=50. This means changing it from 50 units above the bottom to 50 units below the top. If you forget to change the Pos_Y, then the compass will be 50 units above the top and offscreen.

Changing the depth of HUD items:
To fix the compass and gemlight, edit T3UI.ini. It's the Pos_Z depth that you want to edit in order to change the depth of HUD elements. Greater negative values are closer to you. Things no longer show up onscreen if the Poz_Z value is more negative than -697.

I think these are good values but feel free to change them to match your 3d settings and style of play.

Fixing the Gemlight's depth:
find [LightGem] and change Poz_Z to -625
find [LightGemLight] and put a ';' in front of Poz_Z
find [LightGem_Case] and put a ';' in front of Poz_Z
find [LightGem_Gem] and put a ';' in front of Poz_Z
(the last 3 here are child windows of [LightGem] so they inherit its Poz_Z setting of -625)

Fixing the Compass's depth:
find [CompassWindow] and change Poz_Z to -625

Fixing the depth of the selected weapon icon:
find [InventoryItemWindow] and set Pos_Z=-625
find [ItemBackgroundWindow] and set Pos_Z=-625
find [ItemBackgroundGlow] and set Pos_Z=-625

You can tweak more settings but I think that's enough. Now edit the registry to set a good convergence.

In [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D\GameConfigs\T3Main],
Set "StereoConvergence"=dword:41ac3f6a.

This is for winXP so the registry location should be a little different for Vista but you should be able to find it easily. Search for T3Main.

The reason I specified that convergence is because of this game's use of a zooming targetting sight on your bow. Zooming targetting sights tend to limit the range of good settings possible.

Now try it out and find a good value for separation.

The sky is still at the wrong depth (too close) and I don't know how to fix that. You just have to ignore it.

Concluding:
It's a rare game that I figure out how to change the depth and location of HUD items and I also feel fortunate to find good 3d settings that make the game's targetting system usable so I'm really happy about this one. It's pretty cool splashing water arrows into a guard's face.

One final note: This game does work with HW-TnL off resulting in a perfectly auto-ranging nvidia 3d LaserSight as well as working front and backplanes. So you could find more good settings to play this game in if you could figure out how to disable the bow-view so it's out of the way of your LaserSight. That mode does have some visual anomalies like occasional dark lines across the 3d space though. It's your typical crack in the space-time continuum. I think most people will prefer to stick to the HW-TnL enabled mode even though the LS doesn't work good then.

Please post if you use this info and tell us your results.

Enjoy.

I've just installed the game via Steam, modded with hires textures and FOV patch:
with 3D depth at max and convergence value raised quite high as well, TDS is a joy to play again

It does work then, I'll have to try it out.

Do you have input lag from having to enable Vsync?

Libertine,
I did not notice anything wrong;
like I've said: I've jumped into the game with mimimum modding effort, 3D maxed out and not too much effort for the system (I can comfortably see Garrett and objects materializing 25 cm off the screen, no ghosting at all), and it is a joy: I even quit Deux-ex after a few missions (no dark, too simple intel, horrible 3D, same textures everywhere, etc etc), preferring this already played twice game, give the environment in 3d vision

iondrive, great fix :)
I only have a one question:
I've used the T3FovPatch and the t3_widescreen to get the game to run in 1280x720, but it crashes on exit, requiring a process ending through task manager, any ideas on how to fix this.

Have you applied the "crash fix" from the first fov patcher?

Note: for those that have input lag with Thief 3 you can use the Dxtool or Nvidia Nhancer (or inspector?) to limit your framerate to 58, almost completely eliminating lag. You must keep the Vsync ON to be able to use the lockpicking system and climb ladders, as far as i know at least.
