Why Generic CRT mode not available anymore with new beta drivers? 3D Vision + CRT mode has been ditc

Yeah there was another lengthy thread about this, and I agree with some of the other posters here that existing functionality in the drivers should not be removed if that means breaking support for advertised features that people have come to rely on.
Personally I think it was a business decision and unintended consequence to close a support loophole on some of the competing unsupported monitors out there, like the newer Samsungs. While I can't fault Nvidia's decision to not support a competitor's product, I think its a bad idea to go about it this way if that means breaking legitimate product support. Best to just leave the fringe loophole/workaround cases intact and keep your core customers happy, imo. Hopefully this was just a lapse in judgment on Nvidia's part in a few Beta releases that gets remedied going forward.

Chiz, you've got to stop putting so much thought into your posts. It's struck me that I keep finding myself agreeing with pretty much everything you say and it's making me feel kind of redundant. Can't you just start making a few opinionated comments and let the forum descend into some more argumentative threads? I mean, that's what it's all about isn't it? ;-)

It's stupid that Nvidia thinks that by eliminating the Generic CRT mode it will prevent folks from playing games with 3D Vision using unsupported monitors. Someone could use a EDID override based on a 3D Vision Ready monitor and use it for any other not supported 3D monitor that has FS mode and it should work the same way. So, I don't see how Nvidia has eliminated any loopholes/workarounds to avoid people from using 3D Vision with non supported monitors?
What matters is that you need 3DV emitter to have 3D Vision support, so leave CRT mode alone, we still have to buy 3DV glasses to play games in 3D as we need the emitter even if it's not Nvidia glasses to be used for playing game, we're stil, using Nvidia cards and 3DV kit. I see no reason for eliminating CRT mode, it hasn't prevented anything.

I really hope that Generic CRT mode is back with the new WHQL driver??? I really need this for my Samsung Plasma TV and S27A950D monitor. I'm now stuck with drivers 285.62 WHQL.

Yes, and 3D Vision games look wonderfull using S27A950D. There's almost no ghosting at all in games compared to my old Alienware 120hz 3D Vision Ready display.
I've never seen 3D Vision 2 yet, did not have the chance to try them out, but using the Samsung S27A950D in Generic CRT mode, I get a very bright 3D, at least 2x brighter compared to my Alienware display, and the ghsoting level is amazing in this monitor, close to zero. Im not sure if 3D Vision 2 is like that, but I don't think it's any better than the Samsung.
The great advantage about the Samsung is the glossy screen, it's wonderfull for gaming, the colours and contrast are just amazing in this screen, you have to see yourself to believe what I am saying. I've never seen such a beautiful 3D using any other display or TV comparing to the S27A950D, it's definatelly the best 3D I've ever seen. I don't even feel like playing games in my TV anymore, despite of the huge 63 inches. The 3D quality in the S27A950D is far superior to my Plasma TV and Alienware 120hz display.
I cound't believe that the ghosting level is so good in this Samsung monitor and it works like charm with 3D Vision, if you're using drivers 285.62 that still have Generic CRT mode available, it's really amazing.
I don't understand why Nvidia has ditched Generic CRT mode??? I'm still using my 2 GTX 480 in SLI and my Nvidia 3D Vision emitter, I don't use the Nvidia glasses anymore, now I use Samsungs, but I still must keep my 3DV kit cause I need to emitter attached to my PC. So, what's the problem Nvidia, why getting rid of Generic CRT mode???
It's not my fault that the companies that are making 3D Vision Ready display don't give a damn about glossy screens, and keep making horrible matte screens with heavy anti glare coating that just makes colours look opaque and black look grey. It's not fare to make us buy an inferior product to have access to 3DV support. I am using the 3DV kit, I'm not asking for you to support Samsung, I'll I ask is for you guys at Nvidia to keep Generic CRT mode in the newer drivers, as a lot of folks still enjoy CRT displays and have bought your 3DV that is now worthless with newer drivers.

A while ago I had an TFT with a glossy screen aswell - think it was an Asus PW191 or something like that (not 3D compatible). The display had a brilliant picture, better than anything I had seen at that time but everytime I tried to watch a movie during daytime or tried to play a game - the reflection I got from it drove me nuts.
Guess thats the main reason those TFTs are hard to come by nowadays - they definately look good in the store, on the home workspace and have an excellent quality if you prefer to play at night. You're basically screwed if you own a window and sometimes try using the TFT at broad daylight.

I agree, but I don't play in the broad day light, I usually close my windows or turn off the lights, so I don't have a reflection problem. Playing in a dark enviroment for 3D is a must, I mean you don't need to play games in the dark, just don't leave an opened window behind you. Reflection is not really that bad, but in the other hand playing 3D Vision games in a nice LED glossy screen, you have excellent contrast, very deep blacks, a very bright 3D picture and real live colours, the S27A950 has an amazing picture. If there was a nice 27" monitor with a LED glossy screen 3D Vision Ready I would have bought it for sure, but since Nvidia partners keep making these nasty matte screens with their poor colour saturation, I had no options, so I got Samsung. This is just my opinion though, I respect others opinions and whoever like Matte screens and hate reflections, it's only a matter of taste. Maybe that's why I love Apple products...
