Best 3DTV for checkerboard support

I'm looking at picking up a used 3DTV and have a couple questions; does checkerboard look more detailed than passive interlaced? I've found that while it's not the "effective Full HD" that LG claims, the end result is certainly not "losing half the vertical resolution" like many believe (even though it's technically accurate). It's easily better than 720p. I prefer passive to active, IYO is checkerboard worth the jump? Does anyone know if the Samsung PN51D8000FF 51" (2011 plasma) supports checkerboard? Neither the spec sheet nor manual at Samsung's website have any mention of supported formats for 3D.

The high pixel fill factor of the Samsungs makes them worth checking out just for that, if you view your screen relatively close up. Made a massive difference from my old Sony NX711 from 2010. I have never tried interlaced mode outside of a store demo from far away though, but i always found the lines far to wide to use and i would definitely say checkerboard is better from that experience. It really gets close to 1080p (with the help of your brain).

Nvidia announced 3DTV Play in 2010, so it should be HDMI 1.4 compliant. Older Samsung HDMI 1.3 3D HDTVs were not officially supported. As I recall, Checkerboard was widely supported on Samsungs through most of their lineup. Then a few years back someone posted saying that Checkerboard is only available on the 8000 and 9000 models. They also mentioned that Samsung did not call it "Checkerboard", I think they said pixel sampling or something. AFAIK you have to also use a specific HDMI input and also rename it. You should PM Libertine, if he doesn't reply. I'm 80% sure that he's the one that posted everything I mentioned above.

Thanks for the information everyone, I appreciate you posting compatible units and meeting the 1.4 spec is especially important. I've been scouring the web and found a few of the previous threads here; IIRC, Samsung calls checkerboard "pixel mode" on later models. Since I'm not sure how I'll respond to regular use of active 3D, I'm thinking of this as a big movie screen first and a gaming display second. Since I already have two passive IPS monitors I think I'll make it a Plasma...

Eqzitara was the one who figured out that at some point only Samsung's 8000 and 9000 series supported checkerboard i think. I can't remember which year though, but around 1013 maybe. I know the ES6000 doesn't, i use the ES7500, which does and is a 2012 TV. Make sure to check the manual before you order/buy. It calls checkerboard some like 'pixel mode' or something. No idea about plasmas, which i wasn't interested in because i really like life-like brightness levels and the 3D shutter effect already dims the screen quite a bit.

As strange as It seems, all manuals on Samsung's site for 2011+ sets make no mention of supported 3D formats. I've downloaded several PDF's and combed through them. I've resorted to asking the sellers to check for Checkerboard or Pixel Mode under 3D settings.

Retailers won't know jack about 3D, let alone checkerboard. Only time i ever trusted a retailer about whether or not a TV supported checkerboard, i ordered it and it didn't, an ES6000. Ugh All the manuals i've downloaded checking for it did so thats weird. Which TVs are you looking at? Keep in mind there are a couple of different 3D sections (or more) in every Samsung manual i've looked at. Im guessing your looking at the more basic section. Its at the same section in every manual in my experience. Like here at page 106 in this maunal for the F8000 from 2012. http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/tv-audio-video/televisions/flat-tvs/UE55F8000STXXU

The TV in question is a 51" Samsung PN51D8000FFXZA. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/PN51D8000FFXZA There's a series 6+ 58" Plasma from 2009/2010 I'm looking at where the manual clearly shows it meets the 1.4 HDMI spec and supports Checkerboard, but I wonder if the newer set is significantly better. http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201009/20100906140249796/[PC680-ZA]BN68-03116A-01Eng-0902.pdf I've downloaded a bunch of manuals for 5000 and 6000 series sets and there no mention of 3D formats, just that the displays are 3D capable. Search (Control+F) makes it easy. I bet you have stricter disclosure laws when it comes to consumer goods over in Europe than the US does. On Samsung's part, they probably figured no one cared, since it most likely works with all the modern 3D formats for the display type.

I think for a long time now the lower end sets had very limited 3D capability, if any.

I can confirm that the Samsung 4K UN65HU9000FXZA has checkerboard support in PC mode. The resolution has to be set to 1080p60 to function and works with 3D Play HDMI Chekerboard mode. Samsusung's checkerboard mode is called "Pixel" in the manual.

Cyberscott, are you sure of that? I've just bought a new Samsung 4K LED UN55HU8700 curved TV and I was wondering if it supports 3D checkerboard, frame sequential, interleaved, as well as SBS, Under-over and off course, Frame Packing just like my 2010 Samsung 3D Plasma PN63C7000? Does it support all these 3D modes that are only available under PC input (HDMI-DVI) I've just mentioned, or just checkerboard? I haven't been able to try out the PC input function with my new TV, cause my PC is still sitting close to my 2010 Samsung 3D Plasma in the living room and my new 4K TV is in my bedroom, which I'm only using for bluray3D, Netflix 4K, but not 3D gaming. Therefore I'm not using the HDMI/DVI input so I can't see the hidden 3D modes. I'll be moving to a new apartment in a few months from now and I'll then only use my Plasma TV for bluray3D, movies and cable, not for 3D games. I bought my 4K TV already knowing that in the near future it would be the TV I would hook up to my PC and I was afraid that checkerboard might not be available in these new 4K TVs. I'm really glad you said your TV supports checkerboard and since my TV is about the same as yours, just a little bit cheaper, but the specs are really similar, I think there's good chance that it might support CB as well, hopefully it does. I'm glad I bought a Samsung 4K TV and I was about to close a deal for the LG 55" 4K UB8500 LED since I read so many good comments about the new 4K 3D+ that comes with these new passive 4K TVs such as Sony and LG. I think that 4K TVs have really improved 3D, cause of the extra high resolution, so you don't see those horizontal lines like in the 1080p passive Tvs, so it's a big improvement, but I still don't think it wasn't better than the active Full HD 3D that the new 4K curved Samsung Tvs uses. I think it's a close match, but despite all reviews saying that passive Tvs are crosstalk free, I have to disagree since depending where are you sitting you might get distorted 3D and lots of crosstalk, it depends much in the angle, while Active 3D always corrects these issues and crosstalk issues have diminished in these new Samsung LED Tvs. So I think active wins since its full resolution per eye and the crosstalk is not a problem at least concerning 3D videos and bluray3D. I haven't tried gaming in 3D yet. I think active 3D has really improved over the years. I remember how much active 3D sucked in the 2010 LED TVs, so much crosstalk/ghosting issues compared to the 3D Plasma TVs, but this 4K 2014 models are just amazing concerning 3D, at least regarding bluray3D it absolutely blows away my 2010 beloved Sammy 3D Plasma, hands down. There's no crosstalk at all in my new 4K LED TV, if it does it's it's so little that you don't care at all, and the image is very bright compared to my older Plasma TV. I can't hardly wait to try out checkerboard in my new 4K TV once I have my PC hooked up to it. Since these new Samsung curved 4K LED are 120hz native I can assume that input lag should be much better, and also the colours and contrast in these new Samsung Tvs are just impressive, pitch black, it beats my Plasma. I am amazed how much LED tech has evolved over these last 4 years since I bought my first 3D TV in 2010. The new 4K LEDs are a good match for Plasmas in terms of image quality in my opinion. Please, feel free to comment here if you have tried checkerboard in the new Samsung 4K Tvs and if it's a big step in image quality, crosstalk issues, and input lag compared to the 2010, 2011 Plasma, LED Tvs. It's better to hope for that instead of believing in miracles, like Nvidia adding support for HDMI 2.0 for 3DTV Play which means FULL HD 3D 1080p60hz. If that miracle ever happens in the near future I'll be more than glad to upgrade my GTX 690 and get a HDMI 2.0 compatible Geforce card, maybe a GTX 990. At least my TV has HDMI 2.0 and I'll be ready to enjoy the extra bandwith.

BTW, There's absolutely no mention about 3D in the Samsung 4K TV's manual? I overlooked it and there's no mention of the word 3D or 3D modes. I have looked the PDF file instructions manual in Samsung website for both UN55HU8700 and UN65HU9000 and there's nothing concerning 3D????
