Topic: Papercut / layered 2D games that renders in 3D
1 / 3
After playing Candle wich is a perfect example, I realized that this subgenre in 3D gaming is one of my (many) favorites.
So now I've been trying to track down layered 2D games, able to render in 3D !
I guess we all know Child of Light and Valiant Hearts, both very beautifull games..
My last attempt was The dark eye: Chains of Satinav wich clearly uses layered graphics, but I can't get 3D to kick in, I've tried all the usual stuff, and also the WoW profile wich is known for rendering i windowed mode.
Any help or advice is appreciated :)
Does any of you guys know other layered 2D games ??

Win7 64bit Pro
CPU: 4790K 4.8 GHZ
GPU: Aurus 1080 TI 2.08 GHZ - 100% Watercooled !
Monitor: Asus PG278QR
And lots of ram and HD's ;)
Ballpoint Universe, Tesla Grad, Child of Light
There's a few more, those are the ones I can think of at the moment.
I wish that South Park The Stick of Truth would fall in this category, but it's one of the ugliest 2D games that you'll ever play (if you do)
Edit: I had to look for this one through my library, I can never remember the name of it Radical Heroes: Crimson City Crisis
Dust: An Elysian Tail. Kinda. With the Google Earth profile (or 3D Hub, I don't remember) profile it works with layers. But the layers don't make too much sense. I preferred to play it in 2D at 120fps.
Ori and the Blind Forest is the perfect example of this kind of game in 3D. The best "2D" game I've played in 3D.
I've tried to do something about Shovel Knight, but 3D isn't enabled even if I add the exe to the typical profiles, it doesn't dump any shader with the "DumpAll=true" option, all the LOG.txt says is (even with "UseExtInterfaceOnly = true"):
Start logging..
Direct3DCreate9Ex Created
NV API initialized
It would be cool to play it in 3D, like the Nintendo 3DS users do :(. If I could dump shaders, if 3D could be enabled, and if each layer had its own shader, I would be able to give them different depths.
I'm downloading Volgarr the Viking again now. But I don't have any hope at all. Edit: nope. It doesn't have shaders.

A few more in no apparent order... :)

Ys: Origin & The Oath in Felghana (2D/3D)
Into the Gloom(2D/3D... FPP 8-bit horror)
LocoSoccer(2D/3D... stupid fun couch MP)
Thanks for your suggestions guys :)
Yeah, how could I forget Rayman and Ori and the Blind Forest, some of the very best layered games !
I found some of your suggestions in my backlog, just waiting for a rainy day like today :)
Teslagrad actually works very well, Knock-Knock was also a big surprise, Dust: an Elysian Tale is a very beautifull game and I think it's surprisingly good with the Google Earth profile but not on par with the others.
Muramassa is a very stylish sidescroller, wich I have been playing, there's another WII title with similar effects, but I can't remember wich one right now...
Does all Ys games work with 3DV, I know masterotaku has made a fix for Origin, but what about the others ? ?
I have never played any of them, but owns Origin, suppose it must be the right place to start...

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows looks like it would be a paper cut style of game.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/459090/
It has a Demo(1.3 GB install) that's dx11, the exe shows Unity 5.34, 3D does not kick in though.

I tried the demo, it has many similarities with The Banner Saga..
3D kicks in with hubplayer + force DX9, but apparently it doesn't have any depht at all :/

I just tested Night in the Woods and it looks pretty good. The only issues I've noticed so far are scene transition effects and loading screen icons have too much convergence. I think I'll upload a fix for this within the next day or so.

Hollow knight using the 3D hubplayer profile seems to work perfectly so far, only put 20mins in but no problems to report and the ui was at a more than comfortable depth.

So the main menu looks a bit weaird but once I am in-game everything looks fine. I believe I am playing in 3d compatability mode, I think maybe a couple of the flares on some lights are not in the right place but it seems I don't notice most of the time anyway. I tried proper 3d mode but the depth felt weird and tbh honest I'm happy with compatabilty mode.

god damn it, I haven't been playing anything in 3D lately and now I'm going through some of my 3D screenshots and I'm quickly reminded how awesome it is. I need to get an LG 3D passive tv fast before they disappear!
