Why are many 'professional' gaming reviewers anti S3D?
  2 / 3
2D to 3D is a gimmick, full 3D is the world laid out in front of you.

It does have drawbacks right now though, but the technology exists to solve each problem so hopefully they'll fix things sooner rather than later. The Sony 2011 HX929 was reviewed to have almost no ghosting and its LCD, but its $4000 bucks right now and was just released. OLED displays are $15,000 right now at only 25", the last 25" OLED, released 6 months before that model, was $30,000, but they could be cheap in a few years. My Dell 30" display was 2,200 when it came out, now i've seen it go for $600....and so on..... The technology isn't mature either. I just finished Metro 2033 and Bad Company 2 in 3D (and was blown away and will not be moving away from 3D... )and only just realized i could over saturate the colors and increase the white level to compensate for the glasses. This should happen automatically.

I also don't think everyones very informed as I went to two Sony 3D displays at entertainment stores and both had major flicker because of the florescent lights overhead and it was totally beyond unwatchable. During my research and while browsing various forums, I see so many, "im not sure i could tolerate the flicker" comments, as well as comments from manufactures like LG who put "3D with no flicker!" in some of their advertisements for their passive 3D TV's, but THERE IS NO !#$^@!^*! FLICKER! It is completely solid at 60hz/eye just like my last 2 60hz 2d monitors...

@Heedless One *cough*fitting name*cough* /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

It does cut your performance in half, or about, yet you can lower your resolution. I have to since i use a 3dtv, which has a 720p limitation due to HDMI or something like that. But it looks great. You can also bump up your graphical setttings due to the lower resolution. That it requires SLI is just bull$*@!. I own a gtx 260 and a E8500 and Metro 2033 plays excellent in dx9 at 720p and "very high" settings. Check out my screenshots to see what it looks like

But as long as the people who created the 3d helmet mounted display that had head tracking (HEAD TRACKING!), but then granted it a whooping 800x600 resolution, aren't in charge, 3D should take off in my estimation.

I started in 3D with a 6600GT and played FSX and HL2 with it. When you find out that you can't have the best graphics and stereo 3D at the same time each one has to do a choice. I chose 3D, others choose all effects sliders maxed out.

@ Libertine

Your entertainment store comment made me laugh.

Your right, people are often ill informed. The other day I went to my local Sainsburys store. Throughout the store were loads of large adverts for the Nintendo 3DS. I went to their tech bit and asked if I could check it out. 'Sure!' said the lady who carefully unpacked the DS and then stood there smiling patiently with the unit opened in front of her. 'OK' I said and asked if I could see it running. 'Oh, we cant do that.' *edit* -sigh

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

The reviewers do not care what is "right and wrong" about 3D, they care about how many subscribers and readers they can attract with their FUD.

And right now they can attract LOTS of them with 3D, it is easy pickings, just like all the Vista VS XP FUD that did not disappear (and still exists even today in some cases with regards to 7) until Windows 7 came along, even though anyone who ran Vista for any length of time can tell that it is just a prettier slightly (barely noticeable) less resource intensive version of it.

That did not matter to proffesional reviwers because it did not matter to most people either what the "truth" is, they cater to people who are sick of their own ignorance and refusal to become more "tech aware" and instead complain about the constant need to upgrade and all the usual excuses for just not having a clue.

When they have milked the 3D is crap lie enough they will move on to greener pastures, fear not.

Personally I have only played in Anaglyph 3D mode and I can tell you it was awesomely amazing! pity about the performance hit but sometimes its barely noticeable (depending on the game)

And Heedless One, your a slave to drivers no matter what, 3D or not, SLI or not....and yes performance varies......performance varies 3D or not, SLI or not, so that is not really a valid arguement against 3D, nor is the arguement that learning how to adjust a few sliders to customize your 3D image to your liking is to much information for the average idiot to handle. (well, it sort of is I suppose, I keep forgetting the average idiot is probably twice as stupid as I even assume them to be)

3D will take off when the movie industry doesn't crap all over it with post-production garbage 3D.

Also, when 3DTV price come down enough in price in that the average household can afford them.

Also, when people are ready to replace their working HDTV they bought a few years ago. HDTV was pushed before this and many people bought them to replace 10yr+ tube TVs. Why would anyone replace a working HDTV for a 3DTV so soon?

3D gaming isn't enough to push 3D as the avg consumer usually only owns a mainstream PC and/or console.

Most people here forget, we are all niche gamers with hardcore hardware. Even the modest system is usually many grades better than what avg people have.

Till then, 3D is a gimmick for TV companies to sell pricey TVs.

I compliment everyone for their restraint in answering the ridiculous, inflammatory ignorant comments made by a few folks.

The truth is that we live in a diverse world, and there are many points of view based on personal opinion. These points of views should never be regarded as absolutes, they are personal preferences.

I would say that very few of us do not want the latest greatest effects/hardware/technology. There are many that cannot afford it, not the same thing. Some who cannot afford it would rather express that they are not adopting as the new area of interest is garbage, rather than just state they cannot afford it at the present time. This is known as "sour grapes".

Yeah I was referring to 3DVS about my negative experience. I didn't have near the amount of issues with stereo 3D in a single monitor environment. 3DVS is a technology that nvidia does not support and you really ARE a slave to drivers to make this s*** work. Like I said before, I myself have had to find problems and solutions to most of those problems for nvidia! That is no way to vet a technology and support a customer. 270.51+ drivers have brought this technology officially into the beta stage but for the past year it was an alpha tech at best. I just don't see for the life of me why it's taken them over a year to fix these issues when they have known about them the entire time?? FAIL FAIL FAIL.

A couple months ago I decided to put together a new game computer to replace my 4 year old one. I noticed the Nvidia 3D glasses for sale. I read up the less than stellar reviews, but on various forums also noticed many people saying they loved it. I figured if I was going to spend 3 grand on a system, whats a few hundred more for a 120 MHz monitor and the glasses.

Glad I did. So far have had zero problems and 2d games now look pretty boring once I played in 3D. The first couple weeks I took it easy, playing in 3D for short times to let my eyes adjust.

I joined the forum just so I could follow Nvidia's progress on 3D drivers and find some help if/when I run into problems on any games.

3D is expensive ...compared to what? Owning a home?, not. Modding my Jeep...lol not. I work for a living partly so I can try new things and enjoy life. I enjoy this 3D stuff.

Not everyone will, but choice is nice.

Nvidia and AMD have a legitimate motivation to keep single card performance for main stream cards top notch. We see this with dual GPU cards all the time. The first couple sets of drivers are ok, then they just stop fixing things because the work involved in determining the problem and contacting the developer and fixing said problem are way more intensive, and the expected consumer base that would buy the card probably bought it on launch anyway. Back in the GT200 days, there were many scenarios where a GTX 275 outperformed a GTX 285 simply because of the driver and it's the same way in any niche market whether it's dual GPU, SLi, or Vision/Surround. I'm sure the driver team for the GTX 5xx series get way more dead presidents then the 3D guys.

Most people, especially on these forums, but more specifically, in this subdivision, 3D gamers, think that everyone is computer literate...they are not. Most gamers couldn't tell you what socket processor they are running, or what graphics card they own let alone research, purchase and set up the correct equipment for a 3D rig.

I agree, 3D is ingenious and novel.

3D and 3D gaming has its issues like any other consumer product i suppose, but the experience differs from user to user. Like it or don't?. I like the fact nvidia offer the options of 3D,, physX, most games are generally supported by nvidia. No force is applied to play in 3D and you can switch to 2D at any time in game. I changed from iz3d to nvidia, but i do prefer the nvidia 3d package and support. I'm sure the technology will advance and the price may go down?.

From my own experience I have found gamers on PC have some passively learnt technical knowledge just by being PC gamers e.g. at the very least exploring the graphics settings menu. This is even more true for any pc gamer who has upgraded their machine. Think about the minimum technical know-how needed to simply upgrade a graphics card.

You are a consumer and have your opinions which you are voicing on this forum. This is fair dinkums because unlike profession reviewers people can can respond. Also you seem clued up unlike the writer of the article in PC Gamer. It frustrated me because it was so obviously net reseaerched. Left 4 Dead, Burnout Paradise, WoW it even talks about a single crosshair in B:BC2! Plus a good chunk of the article was about the ups and downs of cinema 3D. This is totally different to gaming 3D which reading MTBS3D has been on the steady increase since the spectrum (I think) or something. It did mentioned nVidia's involvement but that was it.

I shew SC2 to my father. What suprised me was that despite not being a gamer, my father said he was quick to dismiss cinema 3D as gimicky (something about using popout which is probably a throw back to early cinema) but didnt think 3D computer games were and saw them as different entities. If my fuddy, 70 this year old father could see the difference, why cant the reviewers?

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
