Looking at 3D vision 2
  1 / 2
I was wondering if 3D Vision 2 is worth picking up. I am currently playing World of Warcraft, but I have some other games that I would like to get into such as Dead Space, The Witcher 2, Metro 2033, and Fallout New Vegas. I have read the topics on this forum about 3D Vision dying, but I am still kind of interested in the technology. Also I have heard some good stories from people explaining how games feel more immerse. I am looking at this kit from amazon right now http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VG278H-27-Inch-Integrated-Speakers/dp/B0063BM5NK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1364316729&sr=8-3&keywords=3d+vision+2+asus. The only thing kind of holding me back is that I currently have an HP ZR24W, which I love a lot. Going from a IPS panel to TN panel kind of seems wrong to me. Also I only have a 570GTX. I don't know if that is enough horsepower to game with using 3D vision. Thank you for the help.

Ive been 3D gaming on a 580 pretty well for 12 months with the Asus VG278H, and its the best gaming upgrade I ever did. The games you listed all work really well (although I'm not 100% sure about Fallout NV) and there are plenty of fixed games on the Helix site. The future doesn't look that great right now to be honest, but if you are willing to give it a try you won't be disapointed with all the existing games that do work really well. Metro 2033 will bring your 570 to its knees, so you will need to turn down some graphics options, and WoW doesn't run at particularly good framerates anyway (and you can only run WoW 3D propperly in DX9 with the hardware cursor dissabled), but TW2 and Dead Space will run completely fine. Basically run your games in 2D and divide your FPS by half, and thats roughly the performance you will get in most games in 3D, except Crysis 2 and 3 which use fake 3D with only about a 10% FPS hit.

No offense to Foulplay99, but I believe your framerates will drop by approx. 1/3 based on research. Still significant, but jus' sayin' for accuracy's sake. I gamed in 3D at first with two GTS450s in SLI, and it was passable in some older games, but I quickly saw the need to upgrade. I upgraded to a GTX580 3GB and it would destroy any DX9 game, even in 3D. Once you start playing games like Batman Arkham City and others that use DX11, you will get bogged down with the Fermi-based video cards, or else have to turn down settings. Tesellation in particular really drains them. As for whether or not you should go for it, my answer is a resounding YES. Basically, if you have a game, or games, that are just your all-time favorite, that you foamed at the mouth waiting for them to be released, and they work in 3D vision, that's all you need for the purchase to be worthwhile. --- I personally, am such a huge Batman fan, that when I knew that the Arkham series could be played in 3D, I HAD to purchase the system. It made the games SO much more enjoyable, that even if there wasn't ANOTHER SINGLE GAME that could be played in 3D, I would consider it worth the money.

If it wasn't for 3D, I would have quit playing WoW long ago. WoW is optomized for DX11 and you will generally get better FPS using it. It also runs well using DX9. You can run a script via in-game macros to determine for sure that you are using DX9 or DX11 by using /run message(GetCVar("gxApi")) You can also use console commands in WoW to easily adjust the graphics to your desired settings when switching from 2D to 3D. These will override the in-game settings and show as "custom" in the UI pane. To enable console commands, you'll need to put a -console after the Wow.exe see http://www.wowpedia.org/Console By using console commands, you can greatly increase or decrease WoW graphics settings to match your GPU whether it's low end or a high end SLI setup.

3D Vision rocks dude! Buy it! Don't forget to enable your convergence keyboard shortcuts in the NVidia control panel. Oh, probably spring for another 570 if ya can. I'm runnin 2, and so far most games max in 3d. no need to upgrade yet...

Another voice of support from me. I have that setup you're looking at, and it's amazing. All the games you've listed should work well (though I'm not sure about Fallout NV). You will probably want to upgrade your graphics card to at least a single 660 though. I'm running two of them in SLI and it's great, but one would do fine for those games and you could wait for further price drops before getting a second. EDIT: AcidBong's suggestion of a second 570 would be good too, if your motherboard can take a second card.

as Nvidia support for 3D vision is dead and buried, I wouldn't buy any Nvidia 3D related product again...and of course it's just me personally.

As unhappy as I am with Nvidia's actual support, if I was faced with the choice today I would still choose an Nvidia GPU for 3D gaming.

Glad to see you joined the tribe. I wanted to add my advice, in case anyone else runs across the thread. Technology companies routinely lie about the future. You cannot trust any future predictions. Don't buy any technology unless it does what you want today. Do not buy for the future. If you can play a giant stack of games Helix or 3D Vision Ready, and you like the list, buy it.

Yeah, good to hear you have taken the plunge. I just bought that exact same amazon deal as you about 2 weeks ago - I was using 3d Vision 1 before, but 2d Vision 2 is so much better. As others have pointed out: 1. Enable the advanced keyboard shortcuts in the nvidia control panel so you can change convergence. Remember there is no "one" correct setting, everyone has their preference, and also each game generally requires a different convergence setting as well. By all means come back here and ask for advice on getting this right. 2. Always go to the Helixmod site posted above - the "community" (and in particular Helix himself) has fixed a number of games that were poor/terrible in 3d and now look perfect. Your next favorite game might be there. 3. All the games you list are fantastic in 3D (Dead Space 1,2 3 all have Helix fixes which are essential and make the games amazing). Fallout New Vegas is pretty great out the box, but there are a couple of minor fixes (skybox and hud/pipboy depth) also available on the Helix site. I have created my own hud fixes for that game to easily toggle between normal view and pipboy view 4. Don't wory about people ranting about 3d vision being "dead". There are hundreds of games that work in 3d (many as a result of the community Helix fixes) which will keep you busy for many years. I still play games from 10 years ago, and I am sure I'll still play games from today in 10 years. And if you haven't already, check out the latest Tomb Raider - a *brand new game* - that is amazing in 3d. Now go have fun with it all :-)

regarding SLI with 570's, check out your PSU before you jump. The old 5XX series of cards have monsterous power requirements compared to the 6XX series. My own PSU (700 Watt Tagan modular) only just supports my 2 670's and I5 2500K, but there is no way in hell it would have supported 2x 580's because they would draw more Amps than the PSU can push. Just something to watch out for, as SLI can make a massive difference to 3D gaming and is well worth the money.

I have a Corsair 750W PSU running 570SLI, with an i5-3570@4.2 Ghz and it's always been rock solid even running Folding at Home for hours on end. Your (the OP) 3D vision experience will be massively improved with an extra 570 in your rig (if your mobo supports it). I just checked online and saw one for $181 - a bargain for what you will get out of it (link: http://www.aztekcomputers.com/ZT5020310MR-ZOTAC-3283710.html).
