I have a 2.4 gain screen, but with my small room and short projector throw, can only get a screen size of 60" *grumble*. It is VERY bright, even with the glasses on. It does allow you to operate the projector in eco-mode, though. This adds another 1,000 hours onto the bulb's life. I remember Tritosine saying that DLP projector bulbs lose a lot of brightness after 700 hours of use, too.

Can always go short throw I guess. http://www.amazon.com/Optomas-GT750E-Short-Throw-Projector/dp/B005G2HR6W/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1327541611&sr=1-2
4 feet away from screen is 80"(DO NOT GET A HIGH GAIN SCREEN IF YOU DO, Get something a bit lower/medium at most. Unless it has low lumens.)
Average projector is Like 9 feet is 80".
Screen gains(of one you should get) depend on lumens, darkness of room, Distance from screen, and angle of projector to screen, and also to keep in mind 3d cuts brightness.
I heard of some1 who got a high gain screen and a short throw projector and he described it as a flare.

I have had or have just about everything and the best still is the projector. I have a viewsonic pjd6531w and its only 720p, but the quality looks amazing on this thing. There is nothing like a huge 3d image. Its more interesting than the acer 1080 monitor I have. For gaming, I would say, go with a monitor, but for anything else, the PJ has the most impact. I now am seriously thinking about getting a 1080p pj.
I had the Sony HMZ and returned it quickly, its just not comfortable at all and the resolution was not enough to justify it. The deal breaker there was the fixed distance you are at with that thing. I mean perceived distance. With the projector, I can sit close to the screen and it fills my vision, I have to turn my head to see the corners. It gives more immersion. I also have a samsung d8000 hdtv 3d 55 inch display, which is great. It really is amazing for stuff where you are ok parking yourself 6 feet from the display.
With 3d, it seems to be all about getting in the right spot to view the display. It does not translate to just get close to a smaller display, like my 26inch acer. There is something to the bigger size. The hmz I was hoping for that immersed feeling and its just not there. Its not there if you have really logged in lots of time with all the other types of displays. I think it may turn the corner though and top everything out there. Maybe with adjustable virtual positioning so you can push yourself in a little too close if you want to.

I can vouch for the Asus VG278H as I have had it for 2 months. The Lightboost technology does wonders for games and you can dial down the default brightness of 76 to about 55 to further reduce crosstalk while still having a bright image. As a bonus, you can play PS3 games in 3D using the HDMI port and without having to install 3DTV Play software.

how is that possible ? play ps3 games in 3d?

I guess I should have specified any "3D" PS3 games with the VG278H. Just plug your PS3 up to the monitor with a HDMI cable and then enable 3D in the PS3's display options. As a bonus, you can tell the PS3 the monitor is smaller than 27" to get increased depth similar to how the depth hack works on the PC.

I also had hmz-t1 and also returned it next day. The "pinhole" to look through was so small. I took off padding and stuck my eyeballs as far as could go...still had blurry edges. I dont care about "dark blacks" when the image was also very bad. Not pixelated per say but it two many visual issues with looking through a magnifier at an image behind it. Image looked worse then my much bigger projector image(which is a $500 dollar projector) over a hmd $800. Not to mention the hassle of it. I really don't recommend it.
I think the people who are truly happy with it were people who went from heavy crosstalk hdtv's/ big hmd fans. I would recommend either a projector or newest model lcds over it.
