hi there all
sorry for probably posting in the wrong place but i am a bit new at this.
i have been a console gamer and i have decided to try computer gaming. i just bought myself a HP ENVY DV6 NOTEBOOK.. it has I7 processor with a nvidia 630 screen with 2 gigs dedicated ram and a total of a gigs onboard ram, and the harddrive is 1 terebite.
is this any good for gaming

Hey there jerry. I will answer your question this time, but please in future start a new thread if you have a completely new topic that contributes nothing to the current thread (it really doesn't help any other users and makes the forum chaotic).
Your graphics card is a low end gpu. Will be fine for most middle of the road gaming on low settings, but I can not recommend this set up for 3D gaming.
If you want to talk more about your set-up for 3D gaming, please create a new thread.
Do not reply on this one.
Cheers :-)
EDIT: Jerrylovemore, you have made 7 identical posts spamming multiple thread with this completely irrelevant topic. If I was a mod I would delete all of them and threaten you with a ban if you made the same mistake twice. Since these forums aren't really moderated, please use good manners in the future or face being reported.

Does anyone find Chiz's mod (helix mods) actually makes the 3D worse? By pushing in the UI really deep into the screen, all the text is essentially behind the 3D models, making it hard to focus on.

I tried everything I could think of. Deleted the Helix fix, deleted the game's profile with NVIDIA inspector, etc. I couldn't find anything to get it to run, probably just have to roll back drivers. It'd be nice to know if it's a dx9 thing or a physx thing. I know they updated physx, which they haven't in a really long time. I don't have anymore time to mess with it but I wonder if you could get the physx dll and drop it in the folder kind of like the helix dx9 dll.

Hey TsaebehT, check my first post again, it is a driver problem. It is nothing to do with PhysX, as I left my PhysX version up-to-date, everything else now is an older Nvidia driver. Have you played this game before or is it on your backlog? The game runs perfect with older drivers, but I find the 'helix mod' fix less than satisfactory. I prefer how it plays normally (even though I'm guessing I will have a problem later when I have to aim with a weapon.)
Even the menu on the 'helix fix' one seems a bit borked. Depth has been added, meaning it now has graphical glitches to the left and right hand side where you see things you shouldn't be able too (and I am not compromising with black borders via F-11).
Looks fantasic on stock NVidia profile though. Don't see why the graphics were criticised, the art direction looks amazing.
i remember time ago in a driver update (Physx update) Nvidia breaks Alice, you have to put Physx to LOW or NORMAL....maybe its same issue.
I have PhysX on high, and it runs perfectly for me. My PhysX is up to date 9.12.1031
The NVidia drivers however are 306.97. Something in the drivers that would appear to be non PhysX related is what makes the game crash in 3D.

You may want to check the 3D profile to see if it has changed since 306.97 to newer versions. Also, it looks like everyone who is crashing is running Kepler GPUs. I know from one of eqzitara's AC fixes, Kepler GPUs need a blanking line in the shader code that wasn't necessary with Fermi. I'll try and take a look tonite but it's been quite a while since I've done any HeliX modding.
As for the comment about text and such being harder to read, that's going to depend somewhat on your 3D settings, if you use less depth you can adjust the values so the text isn't so far set into the screen. Keep in mind though, this will also pull the crosshair back, which is the main reason I pushed everything 2D to depth to begin with. I believe I documented it somewhere in the readme download.
I think HeliX has made updates to his DLL since I did this mod that allows finer control of 3D depths, so it's possible he is able to choose which shaders to render at depth and with how much depth.

I haven't downloaded the newest drivers yet, but I really hope this gets fixed, as it's a game I like to go back to from time to time. PhysX on high is just a MUST - This game sports the best use of PhysX I have personally ever seen.
@ Foreverseeking: I've never tried to use any fixes for the game. The targeting reticle is a little problematic, but is tolerable (It renders double - thus requiring you to aim in-between the two). It's not a terrible issue in combat, because the game uses a lock-on targeting system. The reticle is only needed in free-aim mode, which is required for activating certain puzzles/platforms. This can usually be accomplished in as much time as needed, and the reticle changes color when you are aimed at the target. It does present a challenge on certain puzzles in which you have to activate a platform, then get to another location, and activate a second platform before the timer on the first one runs out.
I would recommend using an Xbox controller, as it makes targeting enemies easy with just the pull of a trigger. I've never tried playing this using the keyboard.
The game is one of the best examples available of toyification - it would be a shame to ruin that just to fix the reticle issues.

That's interesting. I recently upgraded from a Fermi GTX 580 to a Kepler GTX 690. I haven't tried playing the game using the new card yet.

seriously, if it were because of the cards!!! I'll be very angry at Nvidia: while busy pimping out Titan and beyond expensive cards, you should at least take good care of your older products and tech.
I've been happy 3D surround gaming, mainly thanks to helix and the good people in Widescreen forum (also AMD joins the merry band lately since eyefinity titles would almost native surround too), and Nvidia you didn't help, instead breaks things for me? because I bought your new cards?
comon!

Yeah I was just skimming the post early this morning and just started messing with it. I only played a few minutes of it on PC in 3D, definitely on the 3D backlog, but I already finished it on PS3 and almost again on 360. Yes, I preordered both the PS3 & 360 versions. Huge fan of the series. I heard American McGee is trying to secure the rights from EA to do a sequel without their influence. I'd Kickstart that without question ... and then bug the sh-t out of him to make it work in stereoscopic 3D. :D
I can't even remember about the HUD ... then again I play at least 6' from the screen so they don't usually bother me at screen level but the crosshair is another story.

You should try the mod out, it doesn't impact your ability to crank up convergence to get that toyification effect but it does address the problem you describe with the reticle. I play with Alice popping out of the screen, all the mod does is place the crosshair between you and the enemy so you can aim accurately, and also places enemy icons closer to their object depths.
Definitely agree though about the 360 controller, it's essential for any PC gamer imo.

Well, just to clarify, I don't think it's anything Nvidia did on purpose to break things. It's more to do with me not really knowing that much about shader code and using a very powerful DLL that HeliX created and not realizing I couldn't just blank out all shaders without setting a default pointer of sorts. :) It worked fine with Fermi but makes Kepler GPUs choke, probably some subtle difference in their compilers.

seriously, if it were because of the cards!!!

I can't even remember about the HUD ... then again I play at least 6' from the screen so they don't usually bother me at screen level but the crosshair is another story.

physX breaks Clive Barker's Jericho (another 3D ready title AFTER Helix fix) for me, the last stable one is physX 9.09.0814. I have my rig duo-boot, one win7 x64 just for Alice and Jericho~~"
