I picked up a Benq w1080st last night. Its fairly impressively bright - lights up my living room with the windows desktop displayed. Sadly, the screen I bought defaults to being way to tall. I had planned on the projector to sit on a 1-1.5' tall coffee table and this just would not work with the bottom of the screen >3' off the floor. Alignment seems to be very problematic. I can get the bottom of the image level with the bottom of the screen but not get a perfect rectangle. I'll get the level out tonight - I think my screen is not level. :( I did not have an EDID handy to 'spoof' 3DVision/3DPlay into enabling my emitter - the knob and button only adjusted 3D depth and 3D on/off and never turned bright green to sync with the glasses. DLP-Link glasses ought to be here when I get home tonight. I'm going to have to figure out that &*(&(^ screen and lower it. Right now the top is ~1' off the ceiling.
I just heard about this new projector from Epson (Home Cinema 2030): http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Product/Overview.do?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&sku=V11H561020 http://reviews.cnet.com/home-theater-projectors/epson-powerlite-home-cinema/4505-7858_7-35826968.html http://www.avsforum.com/t/1489252/epson-home-cinema-2030-a-projector-that-wont-break-the-bank The specs say that it supports 1080p 60Hz 3D video signal. Is it a mistake or we are seeing a first 3D projector with 1080p 60Hz support?
Nope. Just a less expensive version of the 3020 (does not include 2 pairs of glasses). While to us gamers "full hd 1080P 3D" equates to 1080P @ 120FPS (60hz per eye) "full hd" simply means that 1080P is the projectors native resolution and "1080P 60hz" is 2D while anything 1080P+3D will be limited to 24 or 30hz (us Nvidia users will be stuck at 24/48hz, 24hz per eye thanks to Nvidia). This is the least expensive 3LCD projector currently on the market. Expect equal lag to 3020 and 5020 of ~50ms. If I were to try a 3LCD I'd go with the 5020 - everyone says it has impressive black levels for a projector.

You need to understand digital keystone and it's effects. You "want' to use zero keystoning, any "digital" keystoning will effect the picture quality. http://www.theprojectorpros.com/learn-s-learn-p-keystone_correction.htm http://www.xyhd.tv/2008/01/product-reviews/reviews/optical-vs-digital-keystoning-why-you-want-a-sanyo-plv-z2000/

Interesting, just like digital vs. optical zoom on cameras/camcorders.

Right, it's the same reason that warpalizing on a curved screen is not a great idea. Excessive scaling/stretching in any area can play havoc on text, as well as the image can appear blurry/soft. So for a crisp image and text, it's best to avoid digital corrections. Optical corrections FTW.

It can be a challenge to get the projector perfectly squared to your screen, so that top to bottom and corner to corner are resonably/perfectly in focus. For some this is unachievable due to mounting/placement limitations. If you have no limitations and can not get decent corner to corner focus, you need to look at such things as a mismounted DMD/DLP chip or lens. With some of the cheap plastic lenses used on bargain projectors, you might find the lens is warped/distorted. When focusing the projector, the image should simply get blurrier or sharper. If the image jumps around, the lens is mismounted or defective.

Some success..... I was able to lower the screen ~1' - its still ~1' higher than I'd like it but I can live with it for now. As far as 'keystoning' I was able to get a reasonably rectangular image on the screen - not perfect but good enough. Odd that they even bother allowing the front foot to drop until you consider that if your going to be using it in 1280x720 there's quite a bit of resolution/chip being wasted considering its native 1920x1080. I'm starting to think that if I'm going to sit the projector on a pile of stuff to get the bottom of the lens @ the bottom of the screen I'd rather have a long throw model so I can stick the pile of stuff against the wall instead of in the center of the room. (sigh) The current placement puts my eyes just over the projector if I were to use my primary gaming chair. Secondary chair is much better but offset to much from the center of the screen. Currently using 'cinema+economy' modes. 'black' appears to be the color/shade of the actual screen without an image - this is good! Where I'd normally see ghosting during loading screens in Skyrim (bright object on dark background) this can be seen if VERY close to the screen but vanishes if 10-12' away from it. Nice. While Skyrim 'just worked', Tombraider was a bit problematic. It somehow went into some strange video mode that was displayed top-bottom on the screen. I had to go in and reset it to 720P. Looks nice! I still have Metro 2033, BI and Remember Me to toss at it. So far it looks fairly decent - even if the viewing position and placement is not idea. The 3DTV Corp DLP-Link glasses worked fine - even keeping sync when I turned my head. No pinkish tint from sync signal visible. Since my plasma is sitting BEHIND the screen - I guess no TV for me unless I take the screen down. Even with this enormous (77" vs 43") screen I really did not notice any visual difference with playing Tombraider @ 1080/24hz vs 720/120hz - other than the lag/stuttering of the controls that is. 720P is much more preferable.

3DTV Corp DLP-Link/True Depth are the worse dlp glasses on the market I honestly forget all the issues [definetly ghosting was one of them] but I had them and know the name. I know they were low end. Im not sure if its on the list I had a topic for [too hard to find it]. I know they were terrible though. TBH, you can kind of tell good 3d glasses by price USSUALLY. Any glasses that are sold in "bundles" are to stay away from. These ones are 2 for $30 each. Optoma ZD101's are leagues better [But massive] I've never gotten a chance to look into the ZD201's but they got rechargeable batteries and better size [cant speak for qualitity personally] Im pretty sure your issues are with glasses rather then display. Viewing angle doesnt matter for me at all but I use 3d vision 2's. ZD101's were next best thing for me but I never had oppurtunity to try the 201's. I wouldnt doubt that either of them are best dlp glasses on market... they wouldnt screw around because they actually sell projectors. The rest of these dlp link manufactors dont even sell projectors so they dont care about qualitity.

They work just as good as my Samsung ones for my Plasma. (which IMHO were very good) I've walked in/out of the room with no problem, only the mentioned very faint ghosting if I'm 3-4' in front of the screen with a very high contrast image, not a problem from my different seating places. It'd be nice if they were rechargeable but I can live with them for now. Do the "Optoma ZD101's" effect the 3D picture brightness vs cheaper ones? Reducing the light actually seems to be a bonus as it makes the black level darker. There's plenty of brightness on a 77" screen - (it lights up my entire living room) even in cinema+eco mode. (I've since switched both the 2D&3D profiles to use 'smarteco mode'.) Maybe I've given up on the 'holy grail' of 1080P or superHD resolution 3D @ 120hz. While my 780's might seem way overkill for 720P both were hovering @ 70-80%UT using almost 1.6GB of VRAM. The cards could drive a higher resolution but at this point I'm not sure my old tired eyes would be able to see it. Signal searches seemed problematic until I just told it to use HDMI#1 and turned off searching all inputs. The new firmware may speed that up as well as give me 1080P TNB @60hz but I'd need 3DVision to be able to drive it to make any/much use out of it. The extra mode would be nice but I'm thinking I'd rather have checkerboard format added (3DVision/3DPlay WILL output THAT). I did have to readjust my 3D settings for Skyrim and Tombraider. Both games looked awesome on the w1080st. While playing around with the 'depth' setting in TR - with 1/8th depth setting (a few clicks from the far left of the slider) the game menu was floating in the middle of my living room. Cool.

Like it takes me a laundry list of games to find a situation where I will ghost even at said distance/screen size. I think you will find that those glasses ghost more then they should. Finding a game where you ghost in like one day after getting it strikes me as very odd with a dlp projector. If your happy with it, fine. But if you run into more games where you ghost just keep it in mind. Ive tried those glasses and they are on my bad list. In my experience ghosting with DLP depends on a few factors. One is brightness. I never saw ghosting with my DLP Acer 5360BD until I upgraded to a high gain screen, effectively doubling my brightness. Second is contrast. Even with a bright screen, it took an image of a bright light against a night sky before I noticed it. Third is glasses and viewing distance. With my NEC DLP-link glasses, they're perfect in the center of the lenses but less so in the top and bottom. If I'm sitting far back, the whole image is seen through the center of the lenses so there's no issue. However, I prefer to sit very close: 6 feet from my 90 inch screen. So unless I move my head, the top and bottom edges of the image will be seen through the weaker top and bottom edges of the lenses, and so there's the potential for ghosting when there's high contrast. With my Benq D3 glasses, ghosting can only be seen in the lower corners of the lenses. I think that's probably why mbloof saw some ghosting up close. That said, in practice seeing ghosting is still uncommon. Doubling my brightness with a high gain screen was a huge improvement in quality, and sitting as close as possible greatly improves the 3D experience. If anyone can verify a pair of DLP-link glasses that are perfect over the entirety of each lens, I'd like to buy them, but otherwise I won't be reducing brightness or sitting further back.

Where I'd normally see ghosting during loading screens in Skyrim (bright object on dark background) this can be seen if VERY close to the screen but vanishes if 10-12' away from it. Nice.
I opened up skyrim when you said this. No ghosting for me at 5 feet @ 70" [unless abnormal viewing angle]. Thats why it struck me as odd. Then I read which glasses you used and went to check my list. Ghosting with a DLP projector is very abnormal. Ive tried those glasses and they are on my bad list. https://s3.amazonaws.com/eqznew/pop/proofofpurchase.jpg I honestly don't remember anything about it other ghosting. I really don't remember anything about colors/blacks. Ive tested quite a lot of glasses.
I suppose I was at a rather odd viewing angle - my old gaming chair now sits at the bottom left corner of the screen - I would of been looking up at and to the right at a fairly sharp (and uncomfortable) angle. Odd, I would of suspected LCD's to react to voltage from the outside first and the center last but it seems everyone has kinda confirmed the center blackens first and the edges later. Comfort+size wise these are rather 'clunky' - compared to my featherlight Samsungs. I guess I can get 50 CR2032's shipped for ~$9.50 - I normally rotate two rechargables. A quick look at Benq's website only shows documentation available for download - no firmware or upgrade tools. While the picture quality was decent enough for what I'm going to use it for (and I'm not to sure how I'd go about attaching/using my Xrite to calibrate it) I found it odd that the calibration screen was locked for 'professionals only'. There are plenty of gain+offset adjustments that are unlocked but really? They honestly want users to hire a 'pro' to calibrate their projector? (and have them or a service center update the firmware?) Very odd in 2013. One thing I was not expecting to see was much less motion blur. I'd always assumed that my Plasma had very fast response time and compared to my LCD monitors always looked much better but simply standing and rotating the view (as fast as the render engine+gpus can spit it out) in a few titles looked more natural to me. Even the Tombraider benchmark which used to show different numbers for min/max/avg FPS now shows 60/60/60 on completion. So while using the same resolution in the end: almost 2x screen size, no ghosting and less/no motion blur. The only things I've lost is my black levels and ability to watch TV while the screen is setup. (and of course the $$ needed to replace the bulb when it goes out) Surely was a 'visual upgrade'. Maybe I'll stop by the camera store today and pick up a ND filter to drag brightness+blacks down a bit more.
