Mass Effect + Helix Mod (Crash on start up) solution ...workaround found
I seem to be having some issues trying to load up Mass Effect 1 with the Helix Mod Fix http://helixmod.blogspot.ca/2013/04/mass-effect.html. I was able to play the game for almost 4 hours perfectly fine then, for some strange reason, it just stopped launching the game. I tried running it in comparability mode and at worked for me 1 time then after that it would fail to start. Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a solution? Running as administrator

Update:

The only solution that I have found is to run a cracked.exe. This prevents Steam from starting up ,thus stopping steam overlay. If you own the game,i can't see their being an issue with this, but I am a little worried about stability as some cracked.exe can cause issues.

[[b][i]You can avoid the crashes by renaming the overlay dll here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\GameOverlayRenderer.dll When I rename or delete it, I can launch Witcher and Fear2 with Helix mod. The only solution i could find was to run a Cracked.exe by passing steam overlay . I don't really like doing that but there is no other way, that I have found, to get it running.

I also get the crash with Steam Beta. If I rename the GameOverlayRenderer.dll, it runs fine for me. Another option is to use the Origin version of the game. I think your key works in both spots. Origin at least respects the Overlay-Off setting.
