Nvidia, tell me, are you going to let 3d Vision die?
1 / 4
I asked myself all the years of development of witcher 3, why there wasn't any Information about 3d Vision compatibility.... now i know why! The latest Driver says witcher 3 is "not recommended" in 3d Vision... REALLY? There is a game ready driver especially for the release of witcher 3 and it comes without 3d Vision Support?
Project Cars not recommended? Witcher 3 not recommended? All the great games we were waiting for so many years and then that?
Me and most of my friends love to play games in 3d and don't play any games in 2d since about 6 years. But more and more it seems that you are giving up 3d Vision.
In many games we need mods ( thanks to the great helix team at this point!!!) to enjoy 3d Vision, some times in Sequels, despite the fact that the preceding games worked great, for example the mass effect series or now the witcher series. And the fact that there are effective mods shows that it can't be so much work for you to make it work.
And except for the games, there is also no new Hardware the last years and no communicated plans for the future! What about more than 1080p for 3d Vision. Not even dynamic super resolution works with 3d vision! What about gsync with 3d Vision? What about more than 27" or maybe 21:9 displays for 3d Vision? Nothing? Will 27", 1080p and year old games the last we can enjoy with 3d Vision?
It is so damn sad!
We thought 3d Vision is the reason for us to buy nvidia Cards for the rest of our lifes... but now it seems that this reason disappears.
3d Vision is a really great system that raises gaming to another level, and if you are going to care for it, i believe it will persist beside the upcoming virtual reality Systems, because many types of games won't be effective in vr, but with stereo 3d every type of game is much greater!
PLEASE NVIDIA, DON'T FORGET US!

The fact is that 3D vision is great when, and only when:
1) You have strong hardware to play decently smooth the game you want to play.
2) The game you are going to play is very well supported to play using 3D.
Anyway, inclusive in the situation you get those things, you sacrifice the posibility to play using G-sync, or if you do not have a g-sync/freesync monitor you sacrifice the posibility at least to play using more than 60hz. Also you desist about playing in a ISP monitor.
Provided that to get the 1st point is very very expensive (specially to play nowdays games), and 2nd point is increasely more and more difficult... the result is just one:
Try to convince yourself that playing 2D is better, and try to forget 3D, since 3D creates more problems than benefits. You also have to wear weird glasses and prevent your wife/girlfriend to see you while playing to avoid divorce.
And no mention that there is probably any kind of medical reason to make Nvidia forget the 3D support, since many people complain about eye strain and other different problems. Is it really healthy to play a lot of hours using this glasses?..., I am not sure, I would say probably NO. Is it really safe to play a lot of time looking at a superbright monitor with polarized glasses flickering at 60hz per eye? Why does Nvidia put off by default the option to modify convergence in the drivers?... maybe to prevent posible complains about headache?

What, are you kidding? What about just adding the screenshot hot key to the fool key configuration? What about enabling convergence by default? These are tiny changes we asked about for years that never happened.
It is so damn sad!
It sure is - but it's hard to blame NVIDIA. Sterescopic 3D flopped, plain and simple. Avatar came out and there was tons of hype, boosting 3D Vision. Then the endless flood of crappy 3D movies started. As far as 99% of the public is concerned, those movies are what 3D is about. The movies are bad so the PC 3D is probably bad too - and that's the end of it. You can't expect a for-profit company to throw good money after bad money.
We get another shot with VR in a year or so. If that flops then we're scraping the bottom of the barrel for another 5 to 10 years.

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views ... which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.
@b4thman:
Dude.. is that it ?? Really that's your "explanation" ? Most of us here don't GIVE A F if g-sync/freesync other crappy SYNC works or not (sure it will be NICE to have but not mandatory)... 60 fps is enough... What we ask is for PROPER SUPPORT !!!! from NVIDIA...
You complain about glasses... What about A FREAKING WHOLE FREAKING HELMET (like in VR) I bet your wife will appreciate that more than glasses ^_^...
My friend... MY POST WAS A COMPLETELY UTTER SHIT LIKE YOURS!!!! SO PLEASE STOP POSTING USELESS POSTS ^_^
If you can't see the error in your thinking I am really sorry for you.
But just because you don't have the money/will/desire/whatever to pursue this goal this doesn't mean that all of us should abandon it or think what you thing (want us to think).
As for medical reasons...please let's not go there... I can give you (parts) from reports that demonstrate the other way. Just google stereoscopy as medicine in optics and you can find find a slight portion of what is out there:)
PS: No offense included ^_^. I am sometimes just more aggressive in the way I explain things;)) But, I am not picking on anyone;)
@ZlothX: COMPLETELY AGREE!!! See this is WHY FREAKING ECONOMISTS SHOULDN'T INTERFERE WITH ENGINEERING!!! But these days are "ruled" by retards...err economists who have no idea about engineering! (If any economist reads this and has know idea the logic behind stereoscopy then you fall in this category...sorry... So enlighten yourself!.. Not hard...BASIC physics and some math!)
In any case I agree 10001%.3D flopped because we were flooded by CRAPPY SHITTY movies... Hell everyone wanted to make a dime from the " new tech".... Same as 4K now! Really hope that VR will not be the case...but....
SO... NVIDIA!!! SHOW MORE SUPPORT!!!

Your post has some well thought out points. However I must say it is people and posts like this that helped convince many people and possibly developers to give up on 3d.
Personally I agree with Joker78. Once you have experienced great 3d you never want to go back.
In my experience I only have eye strain when 3d is not properly configured or with incorrect convergence. When everything is dialed in correctly I can play all day with no strain.
Your post reminds me of people posting about how they can't run witcher 3 on ultra settings on their older 760 card. Oh 3d is too expensive.. If you want to play above and beyond, if you want the best experience you have to pay for it.
If you want to game on cheap systems by all means go back to your ps3 and xbox. Myself and many other people game on computers because they are the most powerful capable machines out there with resolutions beyond 1080p and 3d capability. It is not our fault developers don't set up proper 3d nor that some people don't have the patience to get it working correctly.
I'm not telling you thats how you should game, it's how I do.

so? are we going to get a reply? has Nvidia said anything recently, officially, about 3D Vision? as customers; how do we get them to respond?
we should all sign a petition, with a clear question laid out:
Is 3D vision dead? are you going to continue to support it? and why are recent AAA games like Witcher 3 not compatible?
and final question; will you be willing to hire some of our forum members as 3D vision staffers, we have good modders here and they deserve to be hired and paid.

@Helifax
i disagree. nvidia has had just activate a line to set Cm mode for the false witcher 3d in nvidia witcher profile. They do not and noob 3d community are owned.
why Nvidia or game dev not paid support or a more expensive game but optimized 3d ?

Ah, spring is officially here! We have some new people joining us that are confused as to why this awesome technology is not supported. And we have to have our obligatory yearly "3D Vision is dead" discussion. :-> Seriously, look it up, every year.
For the new guys like ibnlanizi and Joker78: NVidia doesn't read these forums, ever. This is user-to-user discussion on their site. So making requests of 'nvidia' here doesn't do anything, it's just us peeps. You will never get a response from them regarding the future of the technology.
And if we step-back just a second- has anything changed in the last 3 years? Same crappy 3D support from NVidia, same completely missing 3D support from game devs, same bad profiles at launch, SLI usually busted from the start. Check.
Is now really any different than before? If anything, my take is it's slightly better, because they demonstrated good faith by solving the lack of 3D Vision kits in the market, and released their CM. It's not a lot, don't get me wrong, but it's not zero, and it demonstrates they are willing to put at least a tiny bit of effort into it.
Yes, no question they have not solved any of the bigger problems. But we all know why. There's no money in it. No one can make a business case for 3D today.
As far as fixing the games at release- that's just not going to happen. If CD Projekt can't be bothered to do the tiniest of fixes, you know that literally no one in business cares. R* is a different animal, because they already had it 99% of the way there because of MaxPayne3.
The lack of a CM profile for Witcher3 at release- given that Helixfax proved it's possible. That's just embarrassing. And demonstrates again that NVidia as a corporation has a total lack of focus. I mean seriously, they can't be bothered to maintain the tech they released just last year? Oh that's right, let's look at their g-sync support too. <cough>
The thing is, I actually think it's slightly better to have their benign neglect. Waiting for corporations to thrown you a bone is exactly your life on the console. Want a feature? Sit, beg. Good boy.
In the current state of affairs, we are in control of our own destiny, not having to suck up to some faceless corporation that would rather we just leave.
So is 3D Vision dead? Hardly. Like I always say, as long as we keep making fixes, it's alive, no matter what NVidia does.
Another way to phrase that question? Was 3D Vision ever alive? When did NVidia ever give it the support that it deserves?

I must agree with bo3b in "3d visión is alivest than ever before", because of us... the old users & really heroic modders.
Never before this team was so efficient and focus... this are Golden age of true 3d.
But Nvidia... mmm... it was so difficult Cm in witcher 3?, to Helifax was a few hours question...
Bob you´re right ... 3D visión is not a bussines anymore, this technology trascends nvidia, actually is a product of all of us. Sadly nvidia let his son orphan to us... they loose it

My 2 cents.
Nvidia has provided the necessary tools to developers to include stereo in their games and it's the developers that are failing us.
Not only are the developers failing us, but we are failing ourselves by not providing a unified voice that is louder than the naysayers screaming over the years that 3D is a gimmick. They were heard, we were not. We should count ourselves lucky that some developers use the tech themselves and love it as we do. Also, that there are some developers that can see where the added feature can increase their bottom line.
I've often wondered the kind of numbers that the Helixblog site gets from people downloading fixes. Surely the word has spread somewhat far and wide, to where a fair amount of 3D enthusiasts know of and now use it. So what would happen if a majority of these enthusiasts using the site banded together to request 3D implementation upon release of a game?
Well...with enough people screaming louder than the naysayers, it would be a no-brainer that the developers would listen to the enthusiasts.
I've no idea of the number of enthusiasts worldwide, but I'm sure that the number is drastically higher than most people think it is. If somehow we could unite and petition developers as a unified voice via group petitions and direct dialog, things would surely improve.

LOL Bo3b, exactly!
When I bought my ASUS 3D monitor, what I did, in roughly this sequence, was:
1. Fire up a game and puke in my mouth a little bit seeing how broked the shadows were
2. Google the game + 3D Vision, and found the Helix blog
3. Played happily ever after :-)
4. From the notes on the Helix blog, found and joined the incredible community here, to express thanks.
5. Petulently started my own post about the decay of 3D Vision and why oh why Nvidia don't love us no' mo'!
EDIT
6. And then I discovered the convergence hotkey, and really got my mind blew out
I appreciate the stance and shift of focus that people like Eqzitara, Bo3b, Mike, DHR, Darkstarsword, Helifax etc brought about, from "dying 3D Vision", to "it never felt stronger, with more modders and more technology assisting modders than ever before".
To all the whiners like me, it's ok, you'll get better, you just need to see it all in context.
And never forget to give thanks.
THANK YOU GUYS!

@bo3b: You always make the nicest posts/explanations:) Seriously! Really awesome explained!!!
Usually I don't take part in this conflict but...It's because the consoles are now viewed at the primary market while PC is there somewhere.... Now asking for some tech that only 5-10% of the PC has (and even LESS use actively) involves more development time to a feature which will not get them more sales...
Problem is if the devs DON'T love the tech just like we do we can't actually do anything about it!
What I really want/expect from NVIDIA is bug fixes and driver support. Updating the driver to maintain backward and forward compatibility. MORE DOCUMENTATION!!! Seriously, the documentation is very limited or not at all (regarding NVAPI).
Their driver is very powerful and clearly they had a good bunch of talented people when they wrote the NVAPI profiler (3D Vision included) but there are settings which aren't documented at all or we don't have any idea what they do!
I learned quite a bit about the nvidia profiles and NVAPI by trial and error (took me around 2 weeks of constantly trying things) to discover some nice features;))
But is 3D Vision dead ? Hell no, far from it! bo3b is in touch with the 3D Vision dev team at Nvidia, which said they are willing to maintain 3D Vision as long as possible with bug fixes and so on:)
So, is not just some legacy forgotten code;)

- "Corsair Carbide 600C" case

What, are you kidding? What about just adding the screenshot hot key to the fool key configuration? What about enabling convergence by default? These are tiny changes we asked about for years that never happened.

Dude.. is that it ??

I'm not telling you thats how you should game, it's how I do.

we should all sign a petition, with a clear question laid out:
Is 3D vision dead? are you going to continue to support it? and why are recent AAA games like Witcher 3 not compatible?
and final question; will you be willing to hire some of our forum members as 3D vision staffers, we have good modders here and they deserve to be hired and paid.
i disagree. nvidia has had just activate a line to set Cm mode for the false witcher 3d in nvidia witcher profile. They do not and noob 3d community are owned.
why Nvidia or game dev not paid support or a more expensive game but optimized 3d ?
Yupp, completely true!
That's why I say...we want proper support (even if in Compatibility Mode) ^_^

But Nvidia... mmm... it was so difficult Cm in witcher 3?, to Helifax was a few hours question...
Bob you´re right ... 3D visión is not a bussines anymore, this technology trascends nvidia, actually is a product of all of us. Sadly nvidia let his son orphan to us... they loose it
(apology my bad english)
What a drivel, an absolute nonsense like this will probably kill 3D vision
