Ethics of ShaderHackers having to buy games... A Simple Discussion
  1 / 2
I will likely get some flak for this post, but I think it's worth gauging opinions around the community. ShaderHackers do us all a great service. That is a fact that cannot be denied. Unfortunately, ShaderHackers can only fix games which they own and are interested in. No-one can expect them to buy games and fix them otherwise. If the game is quasi-interesting, or multiple ShaderHackers are working on a fix, then a shared steam account is being used - but even with this account, Shadehackers are careful to purchase the game legitimately. We are a community with tiny and dwindling numbers. Generally, we don't have support from nVIDIA, nor the vast majority of developers when it comes to 3D Vision. So what happens when a ShaderHacker might be interested in the game but understandably doesn't want to go out on a limb to purchase the game and fix the issues. Case in point, often occurring threads like these: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/973639/3d-vision/titanfall-2-3d-vision/ Here, a ShaderHacker is somewhat interested in the game, but due to considerable cost, understandably cannot justify to himself the purchase of said game. I am of the opinion that if one is not going to play the game for themselves, then they should not be under any obligation to buy the game, even with pooled resources (shared steam account). I am not advocating Piracy. I would like to float the idea that under these strict circumstances, ethically speaking, there is an argument that it is justifiable to use a 'free' 'Fixed' copy of the game for ShaderHacking purposes only. In my personal view, I do not believe that this constitutes Piracy. If the ShadeHacker ends up liking the game and wants to play it, then of course, he would be ethically obliged to buy it. A lot of us have strong feelings against 'Piracy', especially as some of the community work in the software engineering field. I simply ask the question 'Would you agree that even if one were to count the ShaderHacker's version of the game a lost sale, more people in the 3D Vision community would be inclined to buy the [now fixed] game and therefore negate any loss to the developer?' I would like to remove the stigma around this volatile issue. What is your opinion on the matter?

ShaderHackers do us all a great service. That is a fact that cannot be denied.

Unfortunately, ShaderHackers can only fix games which they own and are interested in. No-one can expect them to buy games and fix them otherwise.

So what happens when a ShaderHacker might be interested in the game but understandably doesn't want to go out on a limb to purchase the game and fix the issues.

Hi RAGE, Hmm.. In what order should I address all this stuff;) Let's see;) 1. I am a software engineer and I know that Piracy DOES hurt;) But in the same time the more "valuable" the product/software is the more it will get pirated;) 2. I also did a lot of work on licensing/protecting against piracy. No software is 100% safe;) But "we" can make it way harder;) If the product still get pirated, then we have a very talented person there;) (No company will pursue this. Normally, you get "some" level of protection and stop there;) Also, if somebody went through all the "loops" to get your software cracked then it means something ^_^). 3. Now, in our field this doesn't happen as in the "PC gaming" field but it does happen occasionally. 4. I was born in Romania and studied and lived there until my 20's. Unfortunately, You can't pay 50 Euro/£/$ for all the games that are release when your medium sallary is around 500-600 Euro (really don't know this anymore as is quite a bit of time since I left the "mother/father-land") So, people who are passionate about gaming will look for "alternative" sources. Not, to mention the cost of the actual hardware in the first place;) Now if you have the money and you just "Pirate for the kicks of it" you are a bad person ^_^ 5. I think you were referring to me in that post;) I simply wanted to let everyone know, that I am interested in the game and that I will buy it at some point, but not this month, sadly:( (My wife's car broke down - Ford SportKa (2006) - not an expensive car by all means. She is commuting a lot daily - 160 miles (both ways). So, we will buy a new car and which will be pretty expensive as is brand new and hopefully reliable - unlike the Ford ^_^). 6. I apologies, if I made it to sound like I am waiting for someone to buy/gift me the game, in order for me to take a look and try to make a fix :( I just wanted to let people know is on my radar in the future;) 7. PIRACY IS BAD and DON'T DO IT!!! Developers need money to make new games!!! If we all PIRATE all the games they will not work and go unemployed (Like everyone) and no more games will be made! SO PIRACY IS BAD! If you have the means BUY THE GAME!!! (50 bucks is nothing to the amount of effort and "gray matter" they put into creating the game !!!) Cheers! EDIT: 8. Sometimes the Pirated version is an older version. And any fix you made on that "old" version will not work on the latest released one. So again, Piracy is bad and "unreliable" ! ) 8.1 All the 3D Vision fixes & OpenGL ones were all made on my own private and bought copies of the games;) I will normally try to fix a game that I like and want to play ^_^

My line of thinking is this: 1- I want to play a game. 2- Is it known to work perfectly in 3D by default? If "yes", jump to step 5. If "no", step 3. 3- Is there a community fix? If "yes", jump to step 5. If "no", step 4. 4- I fix it / try to fix it. 5- I play the game. I buy games before step 2 or just before step 4. The only exception I will make is Dead Rising, where I'll use a shared account. However, I act different (in a more selfish and cheapskatish way) from other fixers that fix the latest games when hype is at its highest peak. I almost always buy games when they are on a deep sale, so my fixes are usually for older games (Blazblue, Ys Origin), remasters (Dark Souls 2 SOTFS, Ori), free remasters (Shadow Complex, Skyrim) and late contributions to existing fixes (Darksiders 2, Lords of the Fallen). Or sometimes I'm just a year or two behind. Exceptions are games that are cheap at release and if I'm a big fan (FFX/FFX-2). People that fix the latest expensive games must feel a lot more pressure. And they also get screwed when a game update breaks a fix. Ask helifax :p. What would be different if I had free access to all the games I wanted? I would have helped more with Dark Souls 3, I would be fixing DB Xenoverse 2 now... and not much else. I have a huge backlog of games I want to play. And about piracy, my opinion is that having legit games we make sure that our game is fully updated and that files are correct. Shared accounts is a good middle ground between buying the games for personal use and piracy (well, it absolutely isn't piracy, but you know what I mean). Edit: and what helifax said. Making a game is hard work that deserves money if you are going to enjoy it.
People that fix the latest expensive games must feel a lot more pressure. And they also get screwed when a game update breaks a fix. Ask helifax :p.
SHH!! The Dark Souls 3 fix still works (THANK GOD!!! Or else I'll have do redo like 90% of it - the screen is split in tiny tiles and each tile uses a different shader and ALL needs fixing -_-). Hope it remains like that ^_^ Yeah, I got a few PM's about Battlefield 1 fix while I was working on it;) I know people are very impatient about a new game, as I am ;) There weren't any hard feelings or anything, as I perfectly understand them! But until I get a fix to my liking I hesitate to release it - for obvious reasons:) I just wish these devs would hire us - as contractors - for a week or two and then we could implement a fix that isn't broken with new releases and so on, but most of them don't know about 3D Vision or that "we" are still here, using it;) Fixing a new release also is awesome! It gives you access to the latest "tech" and often you see how an engine develops (like the Frostbite 3 one). So, I find this motivating enough on it's own;) "Cracking" the latest renderer to make it work with 3D Vision ;) I showed Battlefield 1 to a few people and they were all OMG (and this is on a single Screen on my laptop). Now imagine that in 3D Surround, 4K, Projector - any HUGE screen ^_^ or even better imagine that in VR (if the VR hardware would actually be able to push it!) The OMG will be multiplied by... how much ? :) Definitely A LOT OF potential here! And I always try to encourage people to try to understand how things work, one step at a time! In time they will understand things better and they, themselves can become "Shadercrackers" ^_^ I am side-tracking here! I think the shared-account scheme is a good idea! I know some of us use it! I didn't so far, simply because I bought all the games that everyone was interested in (mostly). I just wish! The devs would do something like this FREELY (just gift us a copy to an account - so we can look it up). After all, it helps their sales (probably by a 0.01% margin ^_^ ) but still;)

Ethics aside, piracy isn't practical for game fixes. Game fixes need to be updated to account for game updates, which frequently break games. Pirated games are either non-updatable, or new versions are released whenever pirates feel like it. We do have shared funds, and we get occasional donations to top that up. That money sits in my paypal account (and is recorded in a document that myself and DarkStarSword have access to), until someone makes a request. If Helifax (or any other shaderhacker) wants to work on a game, I'm happy to make the purchase - just ask. I can't buy Russian Origin games most of the time, as they usually have language restrictions (so a Russian purchase gets us a Russian-language game). But I can still buy from key sites (I'm ethically okay with doing this for AAA EA titles). Anyway - if you want me to get it as a shared game, let me know. Or if you want it on your own account, the cheapest price I can find is £33 over here. https://www.scdkey.com/titanfall-2-origin-cd-key_1418-20.html Or alternatively, I'm also happy to let you borrow my Origin account so you can evaluate whether or not you think it's possible to fix it.

Straight up, I used to pirate all my games up until 5-7 years ago (heck, I used to mod people's Xbox 360's for them). Then once I bought my first 3DVision setup, became converted to stereo/PC gaming, and started (wastefully) accumulating a massive Steam library, I simply had no interest in playing something I downloaded for free versus games I've paid my hard earned money for (especially since 95% of the ones I bought I never even got around to playing yet). Pretty much every game I've fixed I owned at the time (or had access through a shared account) except for 2. There was one game (that has a V in the title somewhere ;)) where I had downloaded it to see how it was before committing to buy, and was able to make a day 1 fix for as a result (and then ended up buying my own legit copy within the week), so that ended up being a good call and benefited everyone all around. The other game I thought would be awesome but didn't want to go out on a limb and shell out the $$$, so I got a 'trial' version of that to make a fix, and it turned out I got bored before I got far into the game, stopped playing, and was glad that I didn't end up spending that $$$ (and as far as I'm aware, I don't think many people bothered with my fix for that game either), so that ended up being good for me, but probably not so good for the dev. In general, there's a ton of games that I would love to jump on as soon as they come out, but don't have the $$$ for (currently not working), so I'm always glad to be able to help out if something does get picked up on the shared accounts (and grateful to those who do contribute to enable me to do so), but am independent/self-sufficient enough that those that don't get picked up I'll simply throw that game on my Steam wishlist in hopes that it'll one day come down to an agreeable price for me rather than make any sort of request, or bother trying to pirate it. These days I also don't even bother checking any torrent sites or the like anymore, although with the changes to the lack of significant price reductions in games on Steam over these past few years I can't say for certain that I won't ever find myself doing so again or that I feel largely unethical about it.

I'm happy to help out shaderhackers with Russian games privately as well - they're usually less than half price compared to everywhere else. Just shoot me a Steam message or PM, and I can gift games in exchange for Paypal transfers. To pick a couple examples: The Witness is $12 (instead of $40) Hitman Season 1 and Deus Ex Mankind Divided are $22 instead of $60 Throw a Steam sale on top of that, and things get pretty cheap.

I'd Buy games for Shader hackers and/or donate it to their personal account. Particularly like Dishonored 2, or Hitman. (BTW I will donate one of the two games to any of the main shader hackers. (IE don't be a shader hacker that's fixed like one game). I know it gets tricky since shader hackers put in a ton of work. And even with free game, it's still not worth it for them to fix it unless they enjoy it. I also don't want to buy a game for a shader hacker acct that gets shared and not used much! I also know that if people donate they get pushy which I wouldn't be. I'm not sure what I'm saying ^_^ but i wrote it anyway.

I can get Hitman for $22US, or Dishonored 2 for $33. The shaderhackers do use the shared accounts via family sharing, it works quite well. I'm happy to arrange that if you want to donate to those. I'd advise against preordering Dishonored 2 though - I loved the first one, but I have technical concerns with what I've seen of the second, and with Bethesda's new anti-review policies. Wait until after release.
I can get Hitman for $22US, or Dishonored 2 for $33. The shaderhackers do use the shared accounts via family sharing, it works quite well. I'm happy to arrange that if you want to donate to those.

@ishiki & Pirateguybrush: By all means, if you two were to coordinate obtaining a copy of either or both of those games (I'm personally interested in Hitman) for the shared account, I'd be willing to take a look. I'm also not opposed to being provided the copy(s) directly, but I generally prefer that if I'm reasonably certain I can actually fix the game first. Again, I don't like to directly ask for stuff like this, but I'm quite happy to speak up when someone expresses their own interest. Also, in general, I'm very welcoming of people contacting me to make fix requests. I might not be willing/able to do them all (I'll probably turn down most DX9 game requests because I absolutely hate working with Helixmod now), but if someone is waiting on something and no indication anyone is working on it, then by all means feel free to discuss with me on the possibility.
