Experience with Passive 3D TVs?
Hi Everyone. I'm looking for a 3D TV to compliment my Optoma HD33 which works great with 3DTV, Philips has a couple of friendly priced sets such as the:

42LW650S & 42PFL4307

But these don't show up in the 3DTV specs on the Nvidia site. As these sets have Passive 3D technology I wonder if anyone has tried them out or can confirm/deny it works with 3DTV? Does Passive 3D have any drawbacks in terms of resolution?

Thanks!

I had a LG 23" passive 3d monitor, worked very well with the TriDef software, the games were amazing and the blu ray 3Ds were really nice too.
It was too small for me so i went for 25" asus 1080, but sure passive 3D is very nice just need good quality glasses.

I'm not sure if 3dtv supports Passive screens, i know that with third party drivers like TriDef you will be able to enable passive 3d but not so sure about 3d vision.

BUt yes of course the 3D passive have some drawbacks in resolution, actually you will be seeing HALF resolution, so if you are playing at 1080p actually you are only seeing half resolution on the eyes 540p, passive 3d polarizes the vertical lines on one eye and the horizontal lines on the other eye so that causes some resolution drawbacks... as oposing to the Active 3d that you can actually play at 1080p and the loss is in the refresh rate, that is why you need to use 120hz to play at 60hz in 3d... 60hz on each eye 120hz total.

Thx, I heard the half resolution story before, but wasn't sure it was still applicable to the newer TVs. It's just damn hard to get the right specs on these TVs, most websites don't even feature the supported resolutions, and most newer TVs are not featured on the supported list on the NVIDIA site, which you also have to take into account (see my other post)...sigh..

I have a small update for those interested. I just tried out a new generation Philips 42" passive 3D LED tv. I returned it to the store.

I had no trouble running 720p 3DTV, but also tried 1080p 24hz frame packed, 1080p SBS and some other 'tricks'.

Trust me on this one: Passive 3D are a poor choice for gaming (or movies for that matter). the resolution is truly cut in half and it's butt ugly to be frank, it reminded me of looking at the Nintendo 3DS screen with this clear interlaced lines visible. I tried the Philips myself, but there was a 2000 Euro LG in the store which had some first person shooter on Demo, and it didn't look any better. Perhaps I may be a bit spoiled with my Optoma HD33 (it's in the living room and I want something in my gameroom... hence), but active shutterglass is far, far better. I think I'm gonna go for a Panasonic Plasma this time round.

Yeah, passive 3d does not have the resolution that active shutter can give. I definately like gaming on my 3d vision monitor vs. my passive 3dtv. BUT, do you have small children in the house? I have 4. The reason I went with a passive screen was that the glasses themselves are super cheap. There was no way I would let them have free reign with shutter glasses at $80+ a pop (they are not allowed to even TOUCH my 3d vision glasses). For family viewing, passive is THE way to go imo. Sure, res is cut in half, but for just playin simple 3d games with my kids it's great! And blu-ray from my ps3 looks great to me, and the kids can use the glasses to their hearts content since they cost almost nothing.

Of course, if you ain't got kids... nothin to worry about. :P

Which are you happier with tv, or projector? Id imagine projector since hd33 is the best out for consumers(I believe).
Also are you using 3d vision or tv play with projector?

I use 3DTV play with both Panasonic and the HD33. The PJ is awesome of course, because of the large screen and great for both movies and gaming, but obviously it is sensitive to light, in my case I can only use it at night. The picture and 3D quality on the Panasonic is pretty much the same and I am very impressed with the set as well, both can be highly recommended for 3D gaming with Nvidia 3DTV.
