Why is it that using 3DTV Play, resolution is limited to 1280x720 res, but 3D Vision has no such limitation, games can be played at 1920x1080 on a qualifying computer monitor?

Another thread mentioned a limitation of the HDMI 1.4 spec, and I'd suspect it's the cause. They mentioned that the HDMI 1.4 spec allows for 'framepacking' 3D (which is full-res 3d) at 720p @ 60Hz, or 1080p @ 24Hz. They mentioned this is due to the bandwidth limitations, though then the poster started to talk about DisplayPort being better and NVidia not having enough influence over HDMI. It got political, so my interest waned a bit. :)

That being said, 1080p @ 24Hz sounded allowable in that thread - is this only on a certain game? Some games may not allow a 24Hz signal since they know it's too slow for 90+% of games. I don't have 3D TV Play at the moment, since I don't have the 3D Vision hardware, but this might help someone else help you.

This is all correct, HDMI 1.4 limits the modes that are supported, its not 3DTV Play limiting it.

You can try 1080p 24Hz mode for some games. It works ok, but you are limited to games that allow you to select 24Hz, and your frames will be maxed out at 24fps. Most users dont enjoy, but you are free to look at it and try it.

the hdmi 1.4 connection has sufficient bandwidth for 1920x1080x 51 frames per eye, so there is no technical reason for having to go all the way down to 24 frames. While 24 frames is unplayable, 50 would work quite well and it's a ATSC standard. Of course the best solution is for TV manufactures to provide DVI dual link input. It isn't like the technology doesn't exist yet.
If a game allowed a 50 Hz refresh, would 3DTV Play work at that refresh rate?

The new maxwell cards does support HDMI 2.0, but still my dual GTX 970 SLI have the same limitation even though more than 4 years has lapsed!!! I have a Samsung UE65HU8505 which can do 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz, still I must use 1280x720 for 3d??? Why can't Nvidia support 1920x2160 side by side or 3840x1080 top/bottom split @ 60 Hz and the tv can convert to 3d by the touch of a button. Has nVidia any plans to support anything better than 1280x720 @ 60 Hz With 3dtv Play???

Yup, pretty absurd not supporting higher resolutions on nVidia's part. It's the reason I haven't purchased 3DTV Play, upscaled 720p 3D looks bad. Has anyone with a GTX 970/980 and a 4K **passive** 3D TV that supports 4:4:4 chroma (such as an LG 55UB8500) gotten Tridef S3D to run at effective 1080p60 (line-interlaced) or better?

Thanks for the tip, Tridef works perfectly with my monitor. 4k 3d @ 60 Hz goes smooth as butter. nVidia just lost a 3dTV play customer, Tridef has no problem with high resolutions. I only have a Samsung monitor so I can't help you with the LG issues though.

All 3D capable output devices I've encountered yet support more modes in T&B and SBS than 3DTV Play allows, and I've only seen one device where 3DTV Play allowed the best possible mode (720p60 frame packed on that one). Considering my current screen supports 1920x2160p60 SBS and 3840x1080p60 T&B, this limitation is more than a little annoying.

That statement from Andrew is pretty old, so it could have been true at the time. The 1.4a and 1.4b are where they added the extra modes.
