SONY HMZ T2- and Nvidia 3DTV PLAY + TOMB RAIDER = This is why 3D exists !!
1 / 3
I urge anyone who enjoys 3D gaming to get their hands on a SONY HMZ T2.
I really cannot express in words- how disheartening it is, that people still perceive 3D as a gimmick. Playing the new TOMB RAIDER on a Sony HMZ T2- is an experience unlike anything that has come before.
I cannot understand why people are not jumping all over this unit!- I guess apart from the cost- but the price has come down.
Let me just say TOMB RAIDER- on the SONY HMZ 2- is nothing short of BREATHTAKING- WHAT GAMES CAN BE IN 3D- and I tell you- nothing comes close- it is so clear 3D is the perfect marriage for gaming!- TOMB RAIDER- becomes a LIVING-experience through this device- Just wipes the floor of anything- I have ever seen before........ ( in 20 years of gaming).
I am a very jaded old skool gamer- and I could not write these words on a whim. It really is
THAT GOOD- This experience alone justifies the need for 3D to catch on- It is depressing to think that gaming experiences like this- may not be reproduced in the future- with the announcement of 3D not being a 'focus' on the PS4.
It is only Nvidia- and 3D Vision and the PC community that must ensure 3D- remains alive and kicking.
Wading through a ACTUAL body of water- walking through ACTUAL corridors that stretch out in front of you as far as the eye can see- or the spray of waves, of picking up TANGIBLE solid objects. Lara herself- is a SOLID figure-- like a holographic toon- just standing there- as if you could pick her up....
I mean this is REALLY exciting stuff- why why why- does 3D have such a hard time catching on.
GIMMICK MY ARSE!- bleeding edge experience

@blueonyx These could have been my words. Currently there is nothing better nothing more immersive than 3D-vision in conjunction with the HMZ-T2. I sold my 3x27“ Full-Hd 3D-Vision Surround Setup because it could not compete with the immersion of the HMZ-T2 . Tomb Raider is just one glorious example. Let us not forget about Arkham Asylum\City, Resident Evil 5, the Assassin's Creed series, Witcher 2 ,the Dead Space series, Far Cry 3 and all the other glorious examples that really come to life with the HMZ-T2......

So what's the screen coverage like on it? I read somewhere that it was like a 750" screen and somewhere else that it only covered 40 something percent of your FOV.

You are getting a bigger image tsaebeht, its all advertising. I had a hmz-t1 for a time. Its big but not as big as your setup. Its comparable to a 55" display as a guesstimate. Though the pro of an hmz-t2 I guess is "closed off" which could aid immersion.

Field of view coverage of about 40 percent is absolute nonsense. The field of view is really good. There is a small frame around the screen and that’s all. I also have the Oculus Rift Developer kit and by now I am not really impressed (being used to the glorious 3D of the HMZ-T2). But don’t let us compare a retail-product with a device that is still in development. I just want to say that in its current state with this low-resolution and average 3D (my feelings about the Oculus developer kit are just the same as bloody posted in his 3D-vision-blog) I would never take the HMZ-T2 off to put the Oculus on (although I cannot wait to get my hands on the final Oculus Rift version). Right now it cannot compete with the HMZ-T2!
When it comes to the HMZ-T1/T2 most users make the same mistake. They put the device on are not satisfied then they take it off and consider it an underwhelming experience.
The first important thing you have to do is to throw those spacers that lie on your forehead out of the window. Sony gives you three of them and they all are too thick so the distance between your eyes and the screen is just too far This leads to blurry edges of the screen. Also the screen looks smaller (the Oculus manual also emphasizes that your eyes have to come as close as possible to the screen to give you really good FOV).
All you have to do is to rip one of those pads off and put a really thin foam material on it instead. This step took me 5 minutes of handicraft work.
The magic comes into play when fiddling with convergence. Now that your eyes are really close to the screen(s) the cranked up convergence really sucks you into the game. Other than a monitor or a TV you have no real frame around the screen that separates you from the virtual world (don’t forget to crank up the convergence) so the immersion-factor is much higher compared to a monitor or a TV-screen. The black edges around the screen are more diffuse. Also to me the screen really seems huge. I don’t understand how people compare it to a 40”-screen.
I literally did some side-by-side testing with my 3X27” Full HD 3D-Vision Surround Setup for a couple of days (I don’t know how often I played the first 20 minutes of games like Arkham City, Just Cause 2, Assassins Creed II alternating between the HMZ and the surround-setup) and I really wanted the Surround-Setup to succeed so I could game in Full HD. In the end I sold the Surround setup because of its lesser immersion. I couldn’t get over those monitor bezels (even with correction) that really took away the immersion. Also everything looked small compared to the image that the HMZ provides.
I guess the strongest evidence promoting the HMZ would be my Dead Space experience. I really had a hard time playing Dead Space 2 on the HMZ because with this grade of immersion it sometimes was not only fun to play. I went from one heart attack to the next because I really felt being sucked into the Dead Space world. Dead Space 3 is sitting on my shelf for weeks now and I have not dared to play it yet just because I know that I will constantly be terrified when playing it on the HMZ- T2. If I would play on a monitor or a TV I wouldn’t hesitate to play it because you are more decoupled from the virtual world. When playing it on the HMZ I was feeling like a little girl walking through a dark forest constantly singing to minimize the fear……indeed while walking the forsaken corridors on the Ishimura I constantly spoke some nonsense to myself just to calm down. I wonder how silly I must have looked sitting alone in my apartment, the HMZ attached to my head and constantly speaking to myself although there was no one around beside me…..

Looks like 1280x720 x2 screens, so same as a 1280p projector at 120Hz. But those are OLED screens so the black levels are going to be dramatically superior to a projector. Color, brightness, contrast should be quite a lot better.
Image size is 40° FOV, pretty close to the 47° FOV I calculate for my 1280p projector.
The sizing business of 750 cm at 20M viewing distance I just don't understand why they present it that way. Maybe because the 20M is the focal distance, a more relaxed distance for your eye.
Seems pretty great, but not sufficiently different from projector to get me to switch.
(But you convinced me it's worth a try if I get a chance.)

Since you are moving the screens closer to your eyes, it sounds like you feel the FOV is wider than the Sony published 40°.
Have you measured the FOV to see what you might be getting?
(When I measured my projector field of view, I was very surprised it was as low as 47°. I would have sworn it was much higher.)
I have not actually measured the field of view and have no clue how I would do that with the HMZ. But since I am also using an Optoma HD33 projector I can tell you that the HMZ gives the Overall better experience by far imo. Not only do I find the screen to be bigger (I am using a 121" Screen for my projector) but the Overall image Quality is way more better of course (the OLED-displays really shine here).

By the way the official FOV for the HMZ would be 45°. Since I use a thinner pad that lies on my forehead you can add some FOV. But I cannot tell you a specific number by which the FOV is increased.
What I can say is that I have ever been very satisfied with the FOV of the HMZ but I jumped on the hype-train when everyone was praising the FOV of the Oculus. While the Oculus surely has a bigger FOV than the HMZ I must say I was a little bit disappointed when I first tried the Oculus and found that the FOV was indeed bigger than the HMZ's but not as much as I had expected.

I have very little qualms with the Hmz-t1 and I really like that it blocks out everything. Its just not for me as someone whose constantly interrupted in sessions.
I did not say it was a bad device, I do plan to one day get t2 or a cheap t1 when I can especially since all those OR dev kits are going to be garbage and can gut it for the headtracking.
I also think people would be MUCH happier with a hmz then an OR Rift Dev kit.

The problem most certainly is that the original design is absolutely horrible. I could not get image in focus and overall first impressions were pretty bad. Then i ditched the front pad completely, looked the image just by holding the device with my hands. First time the image was crystal creal and it aligned perfectly between the 2 oled screen. Earlier i saw something i would call a double vision. 2 displays werent "synced" properly.
Anyway i saw the potential it can give me, so i modded mine to ski goggles. After achieving comfort, only issue reamaining was inner lens reflections and "halo" around you eyes. I read posts about paintint the lens edges but it didnt work for me, so i decided to let it go and just enjoy my device. Sadly i could not get past that so after a while i opened up the optics and painted inner lenses too, which worked really nice. So now when i put the goggles on i get a total darkess and little to no reflections from the edges. Perfect device at this price point for me now, i paid a little under 500, used.
I also have a 3d vision projector, optoma hd67n. I can safely say that sony gives far better image quality and immersion. But it cant replace pj of course, whenever i watch movie alone, or play alone i choose the sony.
