3D Vision on Windows 10

My PC doubles as my all-in-one theater PC and I play movies through Media Center from the couch using a remote control. Losing this feature is a no-go for me. I'm sure there will be something that takes its place someday, but I'm not rushing the inevitable. I installed Win10 a few months ago on an ancient laptop. Recently I tried to play a DVD on it only to find there was no playback software loaded of any kind. Seriously? That's ridiculous. So I spent twenty minutes trying to find something to download just to play the DVD, with no success. Everything seems to go through the Windows Store, and I found VLC player and downloaded it, but it behaved like a plug-in for the browser rather than a stand-alone program. Long story short, I got frustrated and gave up. I'm certainly not a tech-noob, and therefore the whole fiasco gave me a very sour impression of this "upgrade."

Any update on 3d surround on windows 10 please? I am still holding onto windows 7 because I am playing Fallout 4 and Witcher3 in 3d vision surround both in compatability mode as real 3d takes a massive drop in fps as SLI utilisation seems much poorer. By the way, is windows 10 netting any performance improvements in single screen 3d (sli/non-sli) vs windows 7?

Great reply and contribution as always which is much appreciated. I will stick with windows 7 because 3d surround gaming rocks! I doubt VR will best this although StarVR looks interesting although it is using a proprietary software. Pity to hear that windows 10 doesn't improve performance as things stand currently. Even on windows 7 real 3d surround SLI seems not to be working well in the recent drivers/games with the exception of Mad Max. I don't know if you agree with this or not. This has forced me to rely on compatability mode, which to me, seems to perform disproportionately way better in 3d surround. I still find cm mode very enjoyable in 3d surround, although I don't use high depth anyway.

In 3D Surround I play Witcher3 on High on 4800x900 and I get constant 60 FPS (lower FPS) in 2D Surround and 30 FPS in 3D Surround. I have VSync On and 30 FPS cap from in-game settings. One thing to note: You need to reimport the profile everytime before starting the game as some of the values are reset and then you get the crappy FPS again... On Windows 10 only 1 GPU works in 3D Surround.

I have to dig this up again. I would really like to upgrade now not only because of Killer Instinct which I am extremly interested in (Win 10 exclusive) but also because my Vive arrived 3 days ago (haven't even unwrapped it yet) and the Rift should arrive within the next 3 weeks. I know this is no real reason to force the upgrade but since I was planning to do the upgrade anyway it seems now would be the right time to do it. Helifax and Bob already confirmed that Win10 is on par with Win7 right now when it comes to 3D Vision single screen. Those still persisting issues in 3D Vision Surround kept me from updating until this point. Looking further into what was said it seems that those 3DV Surround problems only exist for SLI-setups!? Since I am almost exclusively playing relatively low demanding Beat'em Ups like Mortal Kombat X in 3D Vision Surround (all those immersive games I play on my Sony HMZ-T3)) I have only one Titan X installed. Did I get it right that I should have no 3D Vision Surround related problems when switching to Windows 10 because I don't use a SLI-setup?

I am seeing an issue in windows 10 where my games in exclusive fullscreen will randomly minimize themselves. It's very annoying and in the case of competitive games like streetfighter, is making me not able to use it for gaming as it can cost me matches. Due to the long amount of time it takes due to fullscreen and 3dvision to switch back. I am a huge fighting game player also being most of my gaming is in this genre, like you. I have been trying to track down a process that's causing this but have not been able to do so. I am running the exact same configuration in my windows 7 dual boot install and not seeing the problem there. This coupled with the slightly worse performance I am seeing, the abysmal implementation of the windows store exclusive games. All the telemetry they have added to this OS which IMHO pretty much makes it just a big piece of spyware. Then the simply fact of the lack of dx 12 games. I have at this point abandoned it for my windows 7 installation. Seriously. Don't upgrade. If you must play KI (I play it too) Dual boot. You literally can install windows 10 on a new partition without using a license key and the only restriction is you cannot customize the desktop and there is a water mark after a period of time. (which you can remove by a reboot for some hours). So if I want some KI action I just fire up my win 10 boot. At this point I would rather pay for a windows 10 key eventually and keep my windows 7 one. Obviously if you are on windows 8 this advise is void and you would be silly not to upgrade. But I won't be giving up my precious Windows 7 key for literally no real benefit at this point and a bunch of annoyances.

AFAIK, with the Windows 10 free version and Home version, updates are mandatory and can not be hidden/disabled. With the paid version of W10 Pro, you can opt out of an update that might be bug inducing for 3Dmigoto or something else. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/07/windows-10-updates-to-be-automatic-and-mandatory-for-home-users/ I see no reason to upgrade and plan to keep this system as a legacy W7 setup. My next build will be W10 because the newer CPUs will not have W7 support. Any games that are W10 exclusive will just have to wait. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/microsoft-processor-support-policy,31024.html W7 is good until January 14, 2020, W8 January 10, 2023

Another way to look at it, is to ask why you would want Win10? If there is something compelling you want, that's a good enough reason, but if it's just nice to have, then you are spending time on something that doesn't matter to you. While I think that Win10 is at rough parity with Win7 with respect to single screen 3D Vision, it's also not better. There are numerous people on HelixModBlog who run into glitches and problems with Win10, even today. Mostly they can be worked out, but cost you time. For Rift in particular, as of three months ago they now support Win10. Before that, they recommended not updating to Win10. That tells you that their primary software development is done on Win7. More to the point though- don't waste time updating until you break open that box and play around with the new toy. You might want to upgrade for stuff like Virtual Desktop, but there is time. I'd recommend firing up the Vive as is, get to know it, then when you rebuild your system you'll have a more solid idea of what to expect. I'm running Vive and Rift right now with Win7, and it's working very well. Even Virtual Desktop runs, unsupported. To get your Killer Instinct fix, a dual boot would work, but maybe that game alone is enough reason to update. Edit: Also seem to recall that helifax said that he was having dx9 games not work properly under Win10. Might also be surround specific.

It's what I do (just to play KI as well, I might add) and I am more than happy. Windows 10 has been nothing but problems for me so far. KI also has issues starting in 3d mode for me, and flugan hasn't been able to get it to work at all as I understand. Also note, if you do forfeit your Windows 7 key for an upgrade, Microsoft doesn't actually give you a windows 10 key, they have some weird new activation stuff going on that they are being pretty quiet about. (I assume for piracy reasons). it's done through their activation servers somehow. So you could run into licensing issues further down the line depending on what your current 7 license is, if you significantly change hardware. It seems from their wording like after a period of time you cannot go back to 7. Make a partition for a Dual boot with a clean install of 10 (you can create a clean install USB from Microsoft official download) You will probably thank me for it. If I want to Play KI I use it otherwise at least for the moment I am sticking with 7.

Make a partition for a Dual boot with a clean install of 10 (you can create a clean install USB from Microsoft official download) You will probably thank me for it. If I want to Play KI I use it otherwise at least for the moment I am sticking with 7.

Look, I'm not advocating piracy, because I believe you should buy software just like you should buy (and not steal) anything else. But as for the fear of losing your Windows 7 key... couldn't a person just use a key loader program to issue your system a new W7 key? I have uninstalled/reinstalled W7 so many times that's what I have done. As for W10, I'm not sorry I upgraded, but only because I knew it was inevitable and I had a good opportunity time-wise to do so. I have noticed a lot of little annoyances with the OS, and I prefer W7 so far. I have resigned my opinion to change however, as change is inevitable.

Thanks guys! Unfortunately it's too late. Yesterday evening I did the update and so far everything seems ok with one exception. Mortal Kombat X in 3D Vision Surround (which was my biggest concern) seems to run flawlessly (just like before when using Win7). While I still have not unwrapped the Vive yet I am facing issues with Rise of the Tomb Raider. I don't know if these are related to Win10 or rather driver-related. After the Win10 switch I instantly installed the newest drivers 365.10 and now 3D is completely messed up in Rise of the Tomb Raider (using the community fix that ran flawlessly until yesterday when I switched the OS and the driver). As far as I know profiles are overwritten with every new driver-update so I did the "Import NIP-profile via Nvidia inspector" again after updating the drivers but somehow the game started once with completely messed up 3D (weird shadows in starting menu and no 3D at all) and since then the game crashes directly when trying to launch it. The "import NIP-profile via Nvidia inspector" was the only step I "re-did" after driver update but as far as I know this should be sufficient since the Geforce 3D profile manager doesn't automatically update with a new driver (afaik) so it seems there is no need to re-do this step. Currently I have no clue how to fix this issue..... Edit: Everything ok now with Tomb Raider (had to redo the "Geforce profile manager step"). Game runs fine now just like before. So up to this point no problems using Win10.....

Necropants, just wanted to say that I am on Windows 7 yet I also have this annoying issue with games minimising themselves randomly. It's been there for a while, maybe 6 months or so, and I cannot determine a pattern or find a cure. But definitely not linked to Windows 10. If I had to bet, I'd say drivers, or maybe even more likely Steam, somehow.

It seems I started celebrating a little too early because I am facing a very strange issue now that I switched to Windows10! I am mainly using my Sony HMZ-T3 for gaming and when using Windows7 sometimes the HMZ-screen went black while playing as if the HMZ lost the video signal. It never really bothered me 'cause the picture came back within 3-5 seconds. Now using Windows10 I still get the drop-out issue but unfortunately once the screen went black the picture never comes back. That means that I can play just fine for 30 minutes or maybe even for an hour or longer but then suddenly the HMZ-screen goes black. Interestingly when I CTRL+Alt+Delete for the task manager the picture is back instantly so somehow this strange issue seems to have something to do with the 3D signal. When looking at the HDCP-tab in Nvidia control panel there is a warning telling me that the device is HDCP-ready but that there is a repeater installed. Maybe that does play a role here. Also I observed that switching to 3D under Windows 10 seems to be more of a hassle compared to Windows 7. When I did the "enabling routine" for 3D Vision yesterday after updating the drivers my PC switched back and forth numerous times before I could finally proceed with the "enabling-routine". Also I observed that my 3D Vision emitter seems to be constantly disabled when there is no 3D content available. Under Windows7 it always remained in standby (the dimmed green light). Now it seems to be completely dead but as soon as 3D kicks in it switches to the usual bright green and 3D is displayed Any idea?
