3D Vision confusion
I recently purchased a pair of nvidia 3D vision goggles along with the Alienware OPTX 2310 Monitor. I love the setup, and the monitor is absolutely gorgeous. However, I think i feel as if things ive read online and marketing images have given me the wrong impression of stereoscopic 3D. Every picture you see marketing 3D displays images popping out of the monitor, lapping over the bezels, essentially comming into the real world. My experience with nvidia's stereoscopic 3D has been exactly the opposite, instead of things popping out, it's like im diving into my monitor. It's as if my monitor was 5 feet deep and I'm looking into it. Is this the correct way stereoscropic 3D works? or am i missing some key setting or component. Either way, I am completely pleased with my purchase

So far I've tried MW2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Tomb Raider Underworld, Global Agenda, Mirror's Edge, Left 4 Dead, Torchlight, Warhammer 40k, World of Warcraft.

Out of that entire list, I'd say the 2 best games were torchlight and world of warcraft

Learn your tastes regarding convergence. There is a bit of a learning curve with 3d. Make sure you have the advanced keyboard controls activated in the nV control panel.

I just recently played some Street Fighter 4 with some characters completely out of the monitor fights. Pretty cool.

You should see some pop out with Tomb Raider Underworld. I don't remember if Batman has any but the game looks great in 3D. To me the added depth is more important.

As another member spotted, try this

Make sure the short cut keys are enabled from the shortcut key option in the control panel.

Set depth to a low 18 - 22%.

Run the screen saver. Choose texture example 5 (press 5) and gradually increase convergence ALT F6. Put your hand where you think the bubbles are then press forward until you hit the screen texture options 6, 8 and 9 are also pretty good.

On my 22" monitor textures were flying out to a very comfortable 20cm and that was holding back! Course tune with depth: each 1% seems to equal 2 - 3 cm and fine tune with convergence.

Stuff overlapping the display bezel is totally impossible with stereoscopic solutions. With or without glasses. This would be volumetric 3D displays (what many people wrongly call a hologram, like in Star Wars).
Pop-out allows stuff to appear in front of the display, but it must stay in frame at all times, otherwise it gets cut by the bezel.

But the stuff overlapping the bezel is a commonly used trick that has been used for over 50 years in every marketing imagery of stereoscopic 3D hardware, movie or gaming system. Everyone has probably seen at least once some 3D cinema ad showing stuff flying into the theatre over the crowd of a cinema.
These effects are pure dramatization to illustrate the difference when the ad viewer watches using a 2D display. It can't be achieved and never will.
At the moment, this dramatized 3D is accepted but i'm not sure it will hold for years as stereo3D capable TVs ( "3DTVs" ) are about to be launched everywhere. There may be some class actions in the short term future about this.

Get the advanced settings enabled and apply some convergence! I rebinded all the controls so i have everything on the numpad to avoid conflict with game keys.

Agreed, they'll likely have to change the way they market 3d once this goes "mainstream". My guess, though, is that with it going mainstream we'll see in-store displays at every BestBuy etc and every Tom, Dick, & Harriett will have the chance to see what it does firsthand. With that, they'll no longer need overly-dramatized pictures to try to sell the effect to people that have never seen it before.

Agreed, they'll likely have to change the way they market 3d once this goes "mainstream". Same thing here, I've never seen anything really 'pop-out' with 3D Vision on my 21 CRT. I tried that GeoForms nvidia thing, which someone said had great pop-out, but I got zero popout, as soon as it got closer than the screen depth it just went blurry.

Of course when you say 'overlapping the bezel' I'm sure you understand that's impossible, it's just how they show the '3D-ness' in a 2D image, even if it's a little misleading.
