Hey guys, I'm going to return the rift Volnaiskra generously lent me soon, but I'm putting it out here in case anyone else wants to borrow it next. It's currently in Australia, and cost $20 to send it interstate last time. You pay for shipping, and the cost of returning it to Volnaiskra when you're done. Anyone interested>

Still on the go? Where is it to be sent back to once its done with? Wouldn't mind a go if its being passed around.

It's being sent back to Victoria, Australia. I'd suggest it would be prohibitively expensive to send overseas (I don't know where you are), but I can look into it (if Volnaiskra says it's ok).

Just did a quick check anyway, you'd be looking at $50 to send by sea, or $90 by air (conversion rate is closeish to 1:1 between AU and US). Once you sent it back, you'd be a good portion of the way towards buying a kit yourself anyway.

My turn!!!! Yes, I have resurrected this thread. Say something. Wot!? tl;dr DK2 in Elite Dangerous: Horizons is a game changing experience - I think it's literally worth the VR and new rig asking price alone. VR needs/must have a cockpit game to get the most out of it Everything else I have tried is ok - only OK (Remove Elite Dangerous from the equation - rather play 3D Vision.) Here is my first impressions spiel: [PREAMBLE] I have gamed in 3D for nearly 10 years now. I can no longer play in 2D because I can't get immersed. I am addicted to games. I eat drink dream games. BUT can effortlessly walk past any game when not in 3D. I currently have a DK2 on loan from a kind friend. ***DAY 1*** I put it on and executed the OR software's desktop simulator to acclimatise. Pretty cool! I was in the room. Yes I tried to touch the card towers. Ran ED:H ROUND #1 - DK2 •My experience went something like this: •Looked around the cockpit of my ship. •Noticed how big it was. •Looked at the floor. •Felt vertigo (the good kind). •Noticed I was actually holding my breath. Literally took my breath away! •Lined up for docking at a little space outpost •Noticed how big it was. •Double take of the size of the outpost. •Docked •Noticed the blur caused by low resolution •Noticed I had to keep the head kit at precisely the right place to keep the blur to a minimum •Noticed I really had to tighten the headgear •Noticed the 'dots' •Noticed the text (you can read it but only just)! •Noticed I was conscious of the headgear. •Undocked •Tried some combat •Noticed the blur •Took off the unit INTERLUDE •Felt actual dismay at how small my 27" monitor now looked. •Marvelled at how clear and vibrant it was. ROUND #2 3D Vision + head tracking equipment ('VR-lite') •Noticed how sensitive I had the headtracking •Turned down sensitivity •Aware of the 'light' aspect of VR 'lite'. •Considered how much smaller things seemed •But very much aware at how much brighter and clearer things seemed in game •Quickly back in the immersion zone •Wife called me to bed. INTERLUDE •Snuck in a quick Rift demo. Temple Run clone. My first impression of 3rd person perspective games in VR wasn't great. Frankly 3D Vision won here, with regard immersion in similar games (toyification, looking down a fixed perspective like guns etc.) •Quit game •Star Conflict - also pants bar looking down at the floor which resulted in good vertigo. •Remembered weight •Remembered text •Basically remembered all the bad things •Looked at the cables •Wasn't sure what to do with it •Boxed the headgear but kept the camera plugged in ***DAY 2*** •Serious, I mean SERIOUS cogitation about giving the DK2 another go or not. •Decided I was borrowing it so might not get another chance. •Unboxed and connected DK2 ROUND #3 - DK2 •Blown away •Blown away •Blown away •Looked at the size of the hand holds in the ship I was in •Blown away •Looked at the planet •Landed •Bummed about in the buggy •Realised I was really enjoying just jumping about on the planet. •Didn't want to leave the surface •Returned to the ship •Noticed it looked massive •Swapped the my ship for a super quick, super manoeuvrable, super FOV cockpit one •Returned to planet •Flight Assists off •Low flying •Red impact lights flashing •Thrilling •Crossed a ravine •First thoughts: jumping across this in the buggy would be SWEET! •Boosted hitting the lateral thruster •Watched the surface rapidly drop away from me. GAME OVER VERDICT DK2 wins [WEEK 2] Got VorpX and I have played a bunch of games in VR. I hate to say it but I am not impressed. The only game which might be OK is a really old racer. Other racers are too claustrophobic in the seat or look dodgy in VR or have no 3D We have been spoilt for 3D - Outlast 3D is borked in VR but is meant to be a good example. Skyrim is OK but clunky. If I didn't have Elite - VR would be firmly in the gimmick zone!
My turn!!!! Yes, I have resurrected this thread. Say something. Wot!?

tl;dr

DK2 in Elite Dangerous: Horizons is a game changing experience - I think it's literally worth the VR and new rig asking price alone.
VR needs/must have a cockpit game to get the most out of it
Everything else I have tried is ok - only OK
(Remove Elite Dangerous from the equation - rather play 3D Vision.)

Here is my first impressions spiel:

[PREAMBLE]
I have gamed in 3D for nearly 10 years now. I can no longer play in 2D because I can't get immersed. I am addicted to games. I eat drink dream games. BUT can effortlessly walk past any game when not in 3D. I currently have a DK2 on loan from a kind friend.

***DAY 1***

I put it on and executed the OR software's desktop simulator to acclimatise. Pretty cool! I was in the room. Yes I tried to touch the card towers.

Ran ED:H

ROUND #1 - DK2
•My experience went something like this:
•Looked around the cockpit of my ship.
•Noticed how big it was.
•Looked at the floor.
•Felt vertigo (the good kind).
•Noticed I was actually holding my breath. Literally took my breath away!
•Lined up for docking at a little space outpost
•Noticed how big it was.
•Double take of the size of the outpost.

•Docked
•Noticed the blur caused by low resolution
•Noticed I had to keep the head kit at precisely the right place to keep the blur to a minimum
•Noticed I really had to tighten the headgear
•Noticed the 'dots'
•Noticed the text (you can read it but only just)!
•Noticed I was conscious of the headgear.

•Undocked
•Tried some combat
•Noticed the blur
•Took off the unit

INTERLUDE
•Felt actual dismay at how small my 27" monitor now looked.
•Marvelled at how clear and vibrant it was.

ROUND #2 3D Vision + head tracking equipment ('VR-lite')

•Noticed how sensitive I had the headtracking
•Turned down sensitivity
•Aware of the 'light' aspect of VR 'lite'.
•Considered how much smaller things seemed
•But very much aware at how much brighter and clearer things seemed in game
•Quickly back in the immersion zone
•Wife called me to bed.

INTERLUDE
•Snuck in a quick Rift demo. Temple Run clone. My first impression of 3rd person perspective games in VR wasn't great. Frankly 3D Vision won here, with regard immersion in similar games (toyification, looking down a fixed perspective like guns etc.)

•Quit game
•Star Conflict - also pants bar looking down at the floor which resulted in good vertigo.
•Remembered weight
•Remembered text
•Basically remembered all the bad things
•Looked at the cables
•Wasn't sure what to do with it
•Boxed the headgear but kept the camera plugged in

***DAY 2***

•Serious, I mean SERIOUS cogitation about giving the DK2 another go or not.
•Decided I was borrowing it so might not get another chance.
•Unboxed and connected DK2

ROUND #3 - DK2
•Blown away
•Blown away
•Blown away
•Looked at the size of the hand holds in the ship I was in
•Blown away

•Looked at the planet
•Landed
•Bummed about in the buggy
•Realised I was really enjoying just jumping about on the planet.
•Didn't want to leave the surface
•Returned to the ship
•Noticed it looked massive

•Swapped the my ship for a super quick, super manoeuvrable, super FOV cockpit one
•Returned to planet
•Flight Assists off
•Low flying
•Red impact lights flashing
•Thrilling

•Crossed a ravine
•First thoughts: jumping across this in the buggy would be SWEET!

•Boosted hitting the lateral thruster
•Watched the surface rapidly drop away from me.

GAME OVER

VERDICT

DK2 wins

[WEEK 2]
Got VorpX and I have played a bunch of games in VR. I hate to say it but I am not impressed. The only game which might be OK is a really old racer. Other racers are too claustrophobic in the seat or look dodgy in VR or have no 3D

We have been spoilt for 3D - Outlast 3D is borked in VR but is meant to be a good example. Skyrim is OK but clunky.

If I didn't have Elite - VR would be firmly in the gimmick zone!

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I might as well give my impressions on consumer version now that ive been playing with it for over 10 hours. I'll keep it short and compare it mostly to dk2 and gear vr. I do not own cv1 myself but i have somewhat restricted access to it through my friend. Ive tried 3 different games on it and have somewhere between 10-20 hours in it. I was very impressed when i put it on for the first time. I could see SDE faintly when i tried to look for it but It fade away as the demo continued. Fov larger than dk2 and much larger than gear vr. I spend first few hours in the same game(through multiple sessions). After the initial awe and becoming more familiar with the headset i started to notice flaws too. The other two games were brighter and i saw SDE more clearly. Its greatly improved over dk2 and even gear vr but you can still see sde pretty clearly and resolution is still too low. Its not fit to see movies in virtual theater but that is highly subjective as some people already find gear vr to be good enough. I dont. Optics and sweetspot are MUCH better compared to dk2 and gear vr. I cannot get acceptable focus in those, the sides are always blurry no matter how i put them on. Cv1 was pretty clear throughout the screen and there was very little chromatic aberration, if at all. I didnt ask but i suspect lenses still produce CA but its removed through software same as dk2. CA ruined the gear vr for me, its really bad in it. cv1 is also very comfortable and headphones were suprinsingly good. For reference i found dk2 and gear vr to be pretty uncomfortable. How do i think cv1 compares to 3d vision? Honestly i dont know how to answer that well. They offer different experiences and i can see them complimenting each other. The resolution is much higher on 3d vision setups, its less hassle to setup and the game support is much better. Im honestly very tired of putting helmets on my head, i gamed with 3d vision on ski-goggle modified sony hmz-t1 exclusively for over a year which left me scarred! I have oculus cv1 in pre-order and i will keep it but i dont see myself using it very often compared to 3d vision with a projector. Cv1 is the first VR headset which is in my opinion consumer ready. Gear vr is not despite it having a consumer version. CV1 still has much to improve but it is an impressive device. Its hard to see anyone getting dissapointed over it but i also dont see it replacing 3d vision setups for us 3d enthusiasts. Maybe gen 2 or gen 3 glasses will do that.

If that's legit, it's very interesting to hear CV1 impressions from someone accustomed to 3D Vision. And it's not far from what I would have guessed - a somewhat diluted stereoscopic experience. I think 1st generation Oculus/Vive will probably be awesome for people who have never experienced proper 3D (3D Vision 2 on lightboost monitor, with a nice community fix - or similar). But for people like me who only play in 3D Vision there are too many inconveniences: - big vision-blocking headset instead of just light glasses which allow you to still see around you without hassle. Awareness of your surroundings aside, can you people see yourselves playing comfortably the same number of hours per day with a headset, compared to the 3D Vision glasses? - impossible to share an experience with my wife/friend, and even if I had two headsets I'd also need two PCs to power them. I'm not even getting into the cable situation. - huge uncertainty as to developer adoption and content creation To clarify, I'm only talking about a mainstream type of gaming. For specific experiences, in addition to stereoscopic gaming, VR is the next frontier and will probably be awesome, when done well. But I think what I'm saying is that I don't see it replacing 3D Vision for me. It would be truly sad if 3D Vision would finally totally die out. It's the only thing, together with this community, which kept me a gamer, after the constant disappointments that the game industry offers nowadays.

Nice update Sammy123. I'm hoping to get my 3D fix through VR, 3D Vision became too unreliable in the games I really wanted to play, plus the issues with the ROG SWIFT and SLI...so in the end I got a 21:9 ultrawide monitor and my ROG SWIFT and 3D Vision kit have been gathering dust for 6 months unused. VR is going to get far more developer interest than 3D Vision, so my hopes are high that I'll get to experience some awesome new games that actually support my hardware :-)
