Black Screen activating Stereo on XFX 8500 GT (1G) XP SP3 on Gateway Dual Core
I followed the excellent step-by-step instructions posted at http://www.3d.wep.dk/driverguide.html. I found that link on this forum.)

I did everything per the intructions including using Drive Sweeper to clean up all the old files. I can get the Stereo Control panel to appear and I have all the configuration options. When I right click on the desktop to get to the NVIDIA control panel, my Sony monitor is listed - although I did not confirm if the exact model is correct.

Per the instructions in the link above, I modified the Stereo settings (laser sight, stereo gamma settings, etc.) I set the stereo type as Anaglyph glasses. I did not make any modifications or load any software for overclocking.

The problem is that as soon as I activate Stereo from the NVIDIA control panel, my screen turns black. When I used the drivers recommended in the link above (Windows XP/2000 32-bit ForceWare ver. 163.71 and consumer 3D Stereo Driver Windows XP/2000 ver. 162.50), the entire screen turns black as soon as I click on the enable Stereo button.

I also tried a slightly newer ForceWare driver, 163.75, with the same Stereo driver. With this combination I can enable Stereo and return to the control panel and my desktop but I get a black screen when I run the medical test or the test app (I forgot the exact name of that button). I can hit esacpe and get back to the control panel so it does not seem like my system is freezing up, just confused about how to display the stereo tests.

Just in case, I loaded nHancer and disabled the dual core support globally. That did not seem to make a difference.

Hi, the older Nvidia 3D drivers don't work with the 8 series card or newer, and the new Nvidia 3D driver (174.76) is for Vista: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d_stereo.html

Nvidia changed strategy.

But You can use the iZ3D driver: http://www.iz3d.com/t-dcdriver.aspx
(no PunkBuster though)

Thanks. I was planning to try iZ3D based on what I got off the forum but I wasn't sure if there might be a magic combination of Nvidia drivers to get stereo working on the 8500 GT on XP. You saved me the trouble of lots of trial and error. The Nvidia stereo page is vague - not surprising since they dropped support for stereo on XP.

I'll reply again to confirm I got it working. Thanks for all the info you've posted and for the personal reply here.

I was able to get analgylph stereo 3d working with my geforce 8500GT card on XP by using the Nvidia NetForce driver 163.75 and the iz3d driver 1.08.

I can't claim to have done extensive testing with lots of commerical games. It works with Half-Life and a C# demo game called Rocket Commander. My son is writing his own program and the low power 8500 GT seems to be fine for what he wants it to do.
