I've been using the new Asus vg278h this weekend and aside from the terrible backlight bleeding that extends across the middle of the screen, I've been getting this distorted image about half of the times that I enter 3D mode. Has anyone else seen this issue on their new Asus or any other 3D Vision monitor? I've tried the latest betas and WHQL drivers and even went so far as to reinstall Win7 x64 in an effort to take that out of the equation. Could it be a faulty monitor? The bleeding is bad enough that I'm going to be looking to get an exchange because of that alone, but I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this before and if/how they fixed it. I'm running 2x eVGA GTX 570s on a P55-GD65 mobo.

On the bright side, I like how the 3D looks. Just as long as there isn't a darker scene on display that allows me to notice the bleeding, and it isn't one of the times where it looks like an out of tune tv station. Restarting seems to help, albeit temporarily.

Is the Asus the first 3D Monitor you've had to work with or do you have another as a frame of reference/control option? Can you try to set your config to single GPU and then test the monitor again to help isolate whether its the monitor with the issues, or if its a driver issue?

I've never seen that problem with just the test utility and it could easily be drivers or the monitor at fault, but if you can do some additional testing that could help isolate the problem.

Is that how it looks with the glasses on? If so, then that is a defect and I've not seen that on my Samsung or Acer.

Also, it seems that ALL the Asus 27" monitors are defective right now /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I found a thread where people are getting replacements and all have the oval shaped bleeding in the middle. Sometimes it takes up to 3 days for the Oval to appear. /wallbash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wallbash:' /> but EVERY person has the problem.

It's also happening when I have SLi disabled in the Nvidia Control Panel. About 6 months ago I had the opportunity to play with the Asus VG236H attached to this machine and I didn't have any problems at all with 3D Vision. My little sister currently uses that monitor and I'm going to ask if I can swap mine with hers temporarily for testing purposes. I'll post back here with results as soon as I can.

That's how it looks with glasses off. If you put the glasses on, you can actually see the 3D effect working as intended behind all of the distorted insanity. To be perfectly honest, this whole experience has me leaning toward just getting a refund.

Yeah if you have another monitor you can test against that'd be perfect. If the VG236H doesn't have the same issues you can pretty safely narrow it down to the 27". Also, try swapping the cable as something like a faulty cable can definitely be a problem too, but it sounds like those 27" Asus panels are having some QC issues.

You know, I have a 50 Inch 600 Hz Plasma TV.

It would be nice to see a 600 Hz compatible version of 3D Vision, but that would be too expensive and would consume alot of power.

You could also try using Passive 3D, but the quality is just horrible. Half-Resolution, Limited Viewing Angles, Limited Distance, More Ghosting, etc. But Passive 3D Glasses are ALOT cheaper, and much lighter, than Active Shutter Glasses.

But the company known as RealD (they make those cheap Moview Theater glasses) is currently working on a new TV that combines the best of both worlds. It is a standard 120 Hz Display with a special Polarized Sheet, which changes the polarity of the entire screen every frame. Whenever the screen shows the "left" frame, it changes to the "left" polarity. Whenever it changes to the "right" frame, it changes to the "right" polarity. Thus, you can use Passive 3D with Active 3D Quality.

So I was thinking that maybe someone could make a 600 Hz monitor with one of those sheets on it. It would be VERY popular, I just hope that it doesn't hurt 3D Vision sales :(
Not only that, but some companies are making new pairs of Passive 3D Glasses (adopting the RealD standard) with some design changes that increase the quality.

For example, Gunnar made Passive 3D Glasses with an Anti-Reflective Coating on the lenses, allowing for a brighter, more vivid image.
I also believe that Polaroid uses heat and pressure to give the lenses a curve, that way you can perceive shapes and distance more clearly.

Ok. I finally received my asus vg278h monitor today and I've been messing around with it for past few hours. I already own acer hn274h so my goal was comparing two products side by side.
Here are things I noticed.

1. build quality - asus monitor built slightly sturdier than acer hn274h. Oh, yeah.. it boots up slightly faster too. Nvidia 3d vision 2 glasses has 2x height of 3d vision 1 when they are folded. It takes up a lot more space and feels kinda flimsy coz it's huge plastic piece. Oh, yeah..20% bigger lenses too.

2. Performance - Honestly, this so called lightboost technology and 20% bigger lenses didn't impress me much. I've been using acer hn274h for awhile now and I compared these two side by side. this so called improvement aren't noticeable at all unless you compare them side by side and being really picky about it. I mean really picky about it like you have OCD. Acer hn274h already had eye burning brightness so with or without lightboost technology, it was really bright. In fact, I had it down to 0 brightness all time coz it was too bright for my eyes when I don't go to 3d mode and wear 3d vision glass. This asus vg278h monitor is just as bright and I turned it down to 0 brightness too for regular use and only go higher when I go 3D mode. 20% bigger lenses aren't noticeable either cause it's just glasses. You put right in front of your eyes so you can't really tell the difference in size when you use it. Do you notice difference in your glasses size when you get a new one in real life? I don't think so. It's same here.

Overall.. Asus vg278h is clearly step up from acer hn274h and definitely is the best 3d monitor on market right now. However, does it justify extra $100+ of its price? I don't think so. Does it worth upgrading if you already own acer hn274h? Nope. I think not. Buy asus vg278h only if you have extra $100+ to burn over already expensive acer hn274h monitor. I would have blown away by asus vg278h if this was my first 3d monitor but acer hn274h already spoiled me much so It's hard to impress me with this minor improvement. sigh.. I kinda feel stupid spending $1400 on monitor in mere few months.

P.S. I forgot to mention about this 3rd generation ghosting bust technology that asus vg278h has.. well.. it's nothing special. You are going to get same seperated image if you set high depth and convengency, just like acer hn274h. I was kinda hoping this new monitor can let me go maximum depth without image seperation but well.. it wasn't the case. :(

I also own the ASUS VG278h since 2 weeks and had the ACER HN274h before. I agree that it really is a step up. In the case of my 2 samples the (2D-)picture quality is roughly on the same level; that is it's quite good, the biggest flaw being what is called "gamma shift" in the vertical direction.

What I prefer MUCH over the ACER is the significant quicker start-up and wake-up time. And access to the monitor's configuration menu via real buttons also is much preferable, quicker and easier to operate, in my opinion. Possibility of height-adjustment, pivotable base and not excessively stiff tilt (as on the only adjustment the ACER offers) are other advantages I value rather high. All in all: given that the ACER lacked significantly in the aspects mentioned, I think that the currently higher price of the ASUS is kind of justified for it's better "quality" in these aspects alone.

In my opinion the ACER's 3D already was very good. The only real "problem" (if you tend to obsess over any kind of imperfection...) was with it's ghosting. While for me it was easy to ignore most of the time, it definitely was a regular reminder of the premature state of '3D Vision'.

"LightBoost" and the newer glasses the ASUS VG278h comes with DO improve things, especially the ghosting. Interestingly I didn't think so during the first hours. May be it was not until after some tweaking of the monitor's contrast I did, but however, now I consider the result as clearly improved over that of my former ACER. Although the glasses suffer from some stupid design flaws like being unnecessarily heavy and reflecting the monitor's picture on the edges when it's bright. Along with the - slight but valuable - reduction of ghosting goes a slightly more "vivid" picture quality. That too probably is a consequence of "LightBoost"-technology, I think.

I ended up taking my Asus VG278H over to a desktop that has been using the Asus VG236H as their main monitor and, using their DVI cable that's known to work, was able to reproduce my issue after about an hour of watching 3D movies. This leads me to believe that it's the monitor and I plan to send it back. Thanks for the help.

Has nVidia given any official comment on the reflective quality of the new glasses? I'm kinda worried about getting them after hearing about it.

I'm sure they've heard the complaints and negative feedback as virtually every review I've read has pointed it out. If anything I imagine they will do a silent upgrade/fix, but I doubt we will hear anything official about it because that would quickly devalue/depreciate their existing stock of 3DV2 glasses with the reflective finish.

Personally I wouldn't let the reflective finish stop me from buying them if I needed a new pair, I would just use a bit of painter's tape to mask the offending edges for a non-permanent solution that's easily reversible and it should take care of any of the reflections.

I'm hoping there's a repaired version, because I'm too OCD to mod products; I like to keep things in their original form. I might just end up getting a cheaper 3D monitor and use 3DTV Play, since I doubt I'd mind a slight drop in resolution in exchange for framerate, though I'll wait and see if things change.

what? really? all asus vg278h monitors are defected now? shoot. I hope not mine... so far, mine has zero dead/stuck pixel or this oval light problem in center or distorted 3d images yet but I only had it for past 30 hours. If the problem really starts from 3 days of having this, I will be very mad. I hope this problem doesn't apply to second batch of shipment coz I ordered mine(on 11/22/2011) when newegg got it restocked which means that's after their first batch sold out. I think first batch they had sold out a week before I've got mine. :(

While it's not a huge upgrade from acer hn274h + 3d vision 1, I don't really see real problem on mine yet. I haven't really noticed reflective glass problem or serious backlight bleeding problem. everything looks pretty normal to me and I don't have this white bleech screen some monitors have when screen's background goes black. well.. at least not yet. I will update my progress next week if I notice any problem. I am using i7 2600k + gtx 580 sli and nvidia 290.36 beta driver.

Got mine last night and made some quick comparisons against the Acer 27", at stock settings. Crosstalk is the same on both, so unfortunatly no benefit there. Maybe there is a montitor setting I need to adjust, but I compared a number of scenes between both and crosstalk apeared the same in each. 3d brightness is better, it is also apparent that the glasses don't darken as much when using light boost. I have had a terrible time seeing the keys on my keyboard with 3d vision 1, but with the new glasses and lightboost it is much easier. I don't think the Asus monitor has quite the 2d brightness of the Acer, but the 3d image was definitly brighter. Build quality seems much better also, the Acer monitor is rather light/flimsy. The Asus monitor was much more solid and the additional adjustment options are welcome. I like the new glasses, more comfortable than the original, which I think were horrible in the comfort department. 2d picture quality seems about the same, not really seeing much of a difference. I still hate the fact that I will have to take a loss on selling the Acer monitor after having it such a short period of time, but my initial impression is that the Asus if the better monitor, especially for 3d brightness.

What level of contrast are you running in 3D at Mdym? I just got mine this week and I agree that the brightness is fantastic. What I ended up doing is dropping the contrast down to the 50-55 range - I am still tweaking the settings for my personal tastes. At that level, the brightness is still high but it did wonders for what crosstalk I had.
