I understand that the earlier drivers had better performance for Doom 3 (<78.01). Also, Quake 4 has performance problems as well - though I don't know if this is driver specific.

It used to be fine for me, I used to get 70% performance in stereo as opposed to non stereo, which is pretty damn good.
7x.xx series with stereo gives me 95% performance DROP. Its definately a driver issue, My hardware has always been the same since the doom3 came out.
