3D Vision + ASUS VG278H + PS3 = work?
  1 / 2
Hello, this monitor is awesome and works great with my PC setup at 120hz and EVGA 670 card on the DVI connection + 3D Vision 2. BF3 looks amazing in 3D at 45FPS.

I have my PS3 hooked up to the HDMI connection with 1.4 HDMI cable. It detects 3D fine. However when playing games, the 3D turns on, but shifts back and fourth every 20 seconds or so making it unplayable. This happens with every 3D game. It plays fine in 2D. As you know, the PS3 can only push 60hz on HDMI so the fps is pretty low compared to the PC.

Sony support was no help, just told me to change the HDMI cable which I did. Nvidia Vision support told me the PS3 was an unsupported product and told me to get lost. Asus support told me to RMA the Monitor which I refuse to do since I think this is a PS3 issue.

Could this be related to the latest PS3 update we had? I have ruled out the 3D Vision 2 Glasses since they work fine with the PC. Can someone confirm they have 3D working properly with this monitor via the HDMI port!

TIA

Innitially it sounds like you had the same problem I did. I have the same setup as you, and about the same time you put up this forum thread I was trying out a high speed/ethernet HDMI cable which cured the problem completely.

The problem is probably going to be that you are using a standard HDMI cable. You may need a high speed cable instead for 3D or else you get bandwidth problems and the glasses periodically lose the left/right settings which causes the flickering you can see.

I had read up on various forums for hours without finding anyone else with the same issues, or any clues about how to fix it, but I saw a lot of posts about a different problem which gave me a clue about how to fix this one.
Due to a bandwidth limitation problem (something to do with the upgradeable HDMI firmare on the slim PS3) the slim PS3 can't output uncompressed audio and 3D vido at the same time, although 3D blu ray players can do both at the same time if you use a high speed HDMI cable.

Slim PS3 can output 1080p 3D at 24 frames, or 720p 3D at 50/60 frames which is the HDMI 1.4 standard - but it can only do it with standard compressed DTS or DD5.1 audio. It's worth noting that HDMI cables are just cables, there is no such thing officially as an HDMI 1.1 or 1.4 cable, its the HDMI ports on your hardware that are subject to the standard. HDMI cables are either standard or high speed/ethernet.

A fast HDMI cable is required for simultaneous 3D video and uncompressed audio (DTS-HD Master Audio and uncompressed DD5.1) on a standalone Blu Ray player, and its well known that the slim PS3 can't use both uncompressed audio AND 3D at the same time - BUT it appears you may sometimes require a fast HDMI cable just for 3D video on the PS3.

I got a 5m high speed HDMI/ethernet cable from ebay for £10 so it wont cost much to cure the problem. Sony support will usually tell you to change your cables first, because cables can cause more problems than you might think, but if they didnt ask about you using fast HDMI they probably do need to be shot, same as the guys at Asus.

Anyway, now that I've got a high speed cable I was able to watch Transformers 3 in 3D from start to finish without any problems at all, and with my old standard cable the 3D was flicking between L/R and R/L almost every 10 seconds.

Hey thanks for your feedback dude. I am using the old PS3 fat model not the slim. I have switched out 3 cables already with same results, each one better than the next with respect to quality and speed rating. I am thinking of getting a high end monster cable with the highest rating to see if that fixes the problem. So far this is only happening in games, I have not tested 3D movies since I don't own any. Can you let me the know the brand and make of your HDMI cable and if it has the 1.4 or 1.4a specs?

Thanks!

Here is a link to the ebay page for the lead I used. Are you running just a single HDMI cable straight from the PS3 into the screen, or are you video switching through an AV amp/receiver? And since the firmware upgrade have you set the PS3 back to defaults and ran the initial setup again?

Works here but I have the slim PS/3. Both games and 3D Bluray's work fine. I can't remember if I bought the HDMI cable or not but it could be a 1.4 cable. If I did buy it, I bought it from firefold where I buy all my cables.

Sorry to dig up this thread, but I need some info and I'd appreciate your input. I have a friend that bought a PS4 and wants to lend me his old PS3 to "convert" me to consoles (probably because I always say that consoles = Satan and that I'd never buy one :-) ) Anyway, I'm going to shamelessly accept his offer, and use this situation to play some exclusives probably :-) My questions are: 1. Will my ASUS VG278H be enough to play games? He'll probably give me one of his old HDMI cables, but will this cable also output the sound? Or do I need something else? I think there are some incorporated speakers in the Asus monitor but I never used them, will they become active when the HDMI cable is connected? And if the cable will output sound through the monitor, can I connect some stereo headphones to the monitor? (I see some jack connections there but have no idea whether they are some sort of passthru for the PC sound, or real audio output from input sources like the HDMI) 2. Will I be able to play 3D games (nVidia 3DVision 2)? I guess it depends on the level of support of the games individually, but is the console capable, and compatible with the Asus, light bost, and 3DVision 2 technology? I think he will lend me the Uncharted games first, so I try that. Of course I do not expect the level of 3D quality and framerate of my gaming PC, but was just wondering, I've never explored the idea of 3D on consoles. 3. If 3D is supported, are the depth and convergence settings located in the games themselves, or in the console's main menu (if there is such a thing)? Or is it always blocked and on a game by game basis? I think what I'm trying to do is - just in case 3D is viable and impressive in a console 3D title, I could start a stealth operation to "convert" my friend to 3D by lending him the monitor in turn. That would be awesome, since it's difficult for him to visit me so I cannot show him proper 3D on my PC, so he always teases me that I should not be so excited about 3D since it's a gimmick. Sorry for the many questions. It would be great to hear from anyone. Thanks in advance

Yep VG278H works "fine" with PS3 in 3D, but it's not real 3D, it's more like the new compatibilty (fake) 3d mode. Settings (only depth) are located in game The trick to increase a little the 3d effect is when the PS3 detect the Vg278H and ask for his size (27") to cheat on the size and instead put 15" (what I put if I remember good). Uncharted 3 is better in 3D than in 2D (but they decrease graphism due to ps3 hardware limitations. Sadly Last of Us is 2D only but you Have to play this masterpiece :) Ok with the sound via HDMI and headphone.

^Incorrect, some games render in 3d. The VG278H works with 3d on the PS3 sometimes. Depends on the revision of the monitor, I think. For mine, it works. PC > Consoles, but you have to play a few things while you have it: Last Of Us Journey Flower Uncharted (all) Red Dead Redemption Shadow Of The Colossus (HD Remaster) Heavy Rain* Beyond: Two Souls* *Only play these two if you're willing to experiment with some very flawed, but very interesting titles. They really explore some interesting ideas in terms of storytelling, but the gameplay and stories themselves are very divisive, and definitely flawed. I enjoyed them very much, but many people didn't.

Thank you guys very much for your replies, I appreciate it. I'll just hook the PS3 to the monitor then, and see if I'll get both video and sound with only one cable. I'll try to remember to declare a lower inch value to see if it improves pop-up as chtiblue suggested, but really my hope is not big for 3D gaming on PS3. I'll be glad if I can play some exclusives, that's all - I simply will not invest any money in a console just for exclusive games, I'm just old and stupid like that, I guess. Also thank you guys for the game suggestions. The only one on my "mandatory play list" was Red Dead, but I think my friend has that on Xbox, not PS. And GTAV, but he does not have this either. I've also heard good things about Last of Us, but my friend will probably want to buy it on his PS4. I'll see if he has any of the ones you mentioned here. If I end up buying some games just to play them once, I'll gift them to him when I'm done (unless they're locked out to some kind of account/profile DRM, I really hope it's not the case on consoles, the games are expensive enough) Thanks again all

I remember playing Wipeout and one of the God Of War games in 3D on my PS3 hooked up to my VG278H, and it looked great.

I was just checking out this thread. Is it true that you can use that 27 inch 3D monitor with the built in emitter, Nvidia 3D Vision glasses and a PS3 to play PS3 games in 3D? I've always wanted to do that.

Depends on the monitor, but it sounds like all models of the VG278H will do it. I should think most other monitors should do it too. There's no way to use a monitor without an emitter though.

Reporting back on the experiment "Was I missing out by not having a console" The "thing" is hooked up to my Asus, works fine, sound is fine, thank you all for your technical tips. My friend also provided some exclusive games. So far I tried Uncharted, Killzone 3, God of War 3. Some impressions and questions: I could not shoot a guy in Battlezone if my life depended on it! (unfortunately, my life in the game did depend on it, so due to constant dying I had to abandon the game, at least for the time being). I tried God of War next. I got owned by that first boss so many times that my wife questioned my manhood in the end. She could not believe I wasn't able to beat a stupid "horse with crabs". It did not matter that I explained to her that there was no visual feedback whether you hit the boss or not, or that it was not clear when you got hit either, in order to avoid it... bla bla bla I tried to redeem my honour blaming it on game design, but it did not work. We played Uncharted 1 for a while, enjoying the story, but even this game backfired on me, when we reached the second island when you parachute out of the shot-down plane. Once you are on the ground, the game becomes a shooting gallery for a while, and I'm so lame at aiming and shooting with the gamepad that I was either dying or running out of bullets, so she got bored and stopped watching. 1. Is aiming/shooting with a pad supposed to be so retarded? 2. Is the video quality extremely low? Is that normal, or maybe something I did wrong with the display setup? In teh console settings it says 1080p, and it looks crisp enough, but when entering a game, everithing is a mess of huge pixels, jaggies, a blur-fest every time I turn around, and a FOV that's so low I sometimes fee like puking. 3. Are games like God of War 3 the norm? It looks like a very retarded and dumbed-down Darksiders, with nothing to do but run along a predetermined corridor and kill things with a stupid whip, with boss fights without clear visual feedback, or sense of weight? To restore my wife's trust in my manhood, I'm going to a shop to see if i can find a cheap copy of Red Dear Redemption (the only game I think I may have really "missed out" by not playing it). Maybe playing as a sweaty booze-addicted cowboy will show my digital macho side :-) Will probably report back if I have something worth sharing
