Nvidia...are you people insane?!

I know the 3DTV Play feature is built into all of the latest geforce drivers. It's free for anyone who buys an Nvidia 3D Vision kit or a display that comes with 3D vision. But for everyone else with 3D enabled displays (like my Panasonic PT-AE8000U projector with built-in IR emitter), we have to pay. It doesn't matter that I just forked out most of my paycheck for a pair of GTX 660 cards running in SLI...I guess that isn't enough for Nvidia; I have to pay to enable features of the drivers for my card on top of that! Are you kidding me? I'd rather throw out both of my cards and buy an ATI card and pay for a third party 3D enabler than enable this kind of corporate greed. Nvidia, your greed is an insult to any customer who thinks buying a video card (or two) from you will allow them to play 3d computer games on their 3d TVs or projectors. Being told we've got to pay you extra to enable a feature in the drivers is a kick in the face. Nice going.

Wow, get your hero-cookies from Nvidia. I know it's not a charity...I paid almost 500 bucks after tax for a pair of their cards. Expecting the drivers to have all their features enabled isn't asking for charity, it's a realistic expectation. I kinda figured the forum sheep would pounce on this. If you work for Nvidia, then I can understand your sticking up for the greedy practice of selling hardware and disabling some of its features in the drivers in order to wring out a few more bucks from the paying customer/sucker. If you don't work for Nvidia, on the other hand, well, good for you I guess (yeesh!)

The OP is really going to blow a gasket when he finds out 3DTV Play is only supported at 1920x1080@24Hz per eye for 1080P and that most games suck at that refresh rate. Whereas TriDef doesn't limit you to 24Hz at 1080P via HDMI.

Lol well considering nvidia do extra work to make non 3D vision ready displays work, yes they do deserve payment, tbh you would really benefit in getting a 3D vision monitor/projector imo.

Nvidia enables and put 3d-ready on displays when the displaymanufacturers pays $$$ to get their displays "certified". It's nothing more than turning a switch, a whitelisting in the driverset. If some people think this behavior is ok then... I disagree and do not however. It's only one of the ways that nvidia contributes to the great mess with 3d there is today. But with facit in hand: Nvidia do not make any effort of trying to push technology in any way. Today it's all about shortsighted screaming stockholders. The way they reintroduced stereo-3d is a proof of that. Displaymanufacturers pay, consumers pays, even several times with the final result that nvidia (once again just talking about stereo-3d) just lets the whole thing sink in the sand. 3d-vision was really a bad joke in the beginning. There were users with 3d-rigs that by a comparison made anything 3d-visionready available on the market look like utter crap. Without the softwaresupport that once was granted through the drivers nvidia probably lost the major part of former 3d-users. I don't mind paying extra (for a reasonable price) for the s-3d feature but noone was ever given the option. Guess why everybody is soo happy...

Nvidia pays for 3d vision support to developers. Thats the truth of it and more games = more money. Nvidia has to make money, developer has to make money. Money has to come from somewhere. As an old school 3D gamer its all sunshine compared to today. Compatibility before Nvidia stereo 3d -> nvidia 3d vision was so much higher then it is today because games were frankly not advanced. If nvidia stereo 3d's compatibility was 1/2 my guess is 3d vision is like 1/12 and its growing. I dont agree with 99% decisions nvidia makes but money must be made.

I mean, no one hates Nvidia more than 3D Vision users, but really, its like building a gaming rig then whining to Microsoft that you have to BUY Windows.

TBH, I dont know what they are doing. They are messing with tech/software ideas. They havent been sponsoring many games as of late[Some of which were just terrible as well. Yay MMO'S....] but the games they have. We DID infact mostly get support of some type[Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter, Metro Last Light, Black Ops 2, Borderlands 2[They f'd it all up]]. Of course, often the dev's suck[Seriously. How I fixed LA Noire was disabling a line of code they added for 3D vision] and nvidia's lack of qualitity control. Im not defending nvidia. Nor they dont exploit helix/I/others. Nor am I saying they are doing enough. Im just defending the need to charge. Seriously, I dont make a dime[Spend a bit on hosting] and even I defend charging. The day they decide 3d vision isnt profitable, you'll know it.

But they DID charge; I paid 500 bucks for a pair of cards. Fully functional drivers should come with those cards. That should be a part of the deal. Telling me I have to pay extra to flip a switch that already exists in those drivers is just a blatant rip-off. And dumb-as-a-bag-of-hammers comments like Cookybiscuit's is why Nvidia figures the current greedy money-grab policy is acceptable. No, it's not like whining that one needs to buy an operating system for a gaming rig (duh). It's complaining, and rightfully so, that the drivers for a paid-for piece of hardware are crippled and won't work until one forks out even more money than he's already paid.

If you buy an Nvidia monitor and glasses, Nvidia is getting money towards their software costs. If you buy a Samsung TV and glasses, they don't. Is that so hard to understand or should I simplify it further?

Nvidia are still shooting themselves and everybody else in the foot by doing this. Their halfassed tries will only kill of good technology because noone at nvidia are familiar with longterm investments. Is THAT so hard to understand?
