Anyone try DLP Link glasses w/ 3D Vision dongle (& projector)
I'm using Optoma 3D capable projectors (GT720/700) and currently have a 3D Vision kit with the included Nvidia glasses. One issue is the Optoma needs the Acer spoofed .inf to be recoginzed as 3D Vision capable. It works with that .inf. I understand Optoma will do a firmware upgrade if I send the units in, but that is a hassle I'm avoiding so far.

One annoyance however is when 3D is enabled on the Optoma menu, it defaults to DLP Link, and I need to manually go into each projector and set it to "IR" (3D Vision) instead. If I leave it DLP Link, the contrast goes out the window and blacks are futher washed out since DLP Link uses projected white flashes in between frames to sync those type of glasses.

So it had me thinking, rather than send the Optoma projectors back (I have three) and pay for shipping and wait times for them to upgrade the firmware, is it possible to grab a $100 pair of DLP Link glasses and just use those with the projector's default DLP Link 3D mode instead? How would that work with the 3D Vision driver? I know the dongle is not needed with the DLP Link glasses, but can I still use the Nvidia drivers? I don't want to have to hassle with 3rd party like DDD or other 3D solutions. I also don't want to have to revert to an older, outdated Nvidia driver that won't work with the newest games and not support 3D Vision Surround.

I'm no expert at all here, but I think there might be some hope. I thought most of the DLP projectors were supposed to work with Nvidia 3D Vision through DLP link glasses straight out of the box.

I have the Optoma GT720 projector and i have few issues on them too. My thread is here.
I just bought them like couple weeks ago and it should be with new firmware for 3d vision. However it still work only with modified Acer inf file on 1.29 nvidia drivers. Optoma says that they gonna add support to their projector in August 2010, that mean everithing should work fine, because optoma projectors came to Best Buy only in October, so firmware should be new. And i can't see on box and on the projector when it was made, also in the options i can't see the firmware date. And i don;t find any information.
So my point and question is - Why you think if you gonna send your projector to the optoma service center that is gonna help ypu to solve your problem? I'm just curious why nVidia trying to say that is the Optoma problem, and the Optoma trying to say that nVidia had the problem! I'm pretty sure that is not a big deal with projector because it already have support with moddified inf, so i'm pretty sure nVidia doing something wrong. Also i fount pretty interesing file. It calls Protocol Function where you can clearly see some information for rs232 about nVidia 3d Vision. I wish i can try but i have laptop without com port. I'm probably gonna try to figure out later.

Why I think that is vie read several accounts here and elsewhere that people have called Optoma customer service, and they have asked them to send the unit in for new firmware and a new circuit board to enable native 3D Vision support. Call them, its very possible best buy got a batch made before the new firmware was put into production. I've heard its about a one week turnaround to get it worked on and no cost...

It's not available in menu. You need to call them and go over it. They may be able to tell by serial# or simply by what you see in the menus. Mine show option for DLP-Link and IR. I THINK when they are upgraded they show 3D Vision instead of "IR", but I may be mistaken. Ask Optoma customer service, that is what they are there for. I've been meaning to call myself. I tried using their email on the website since it's hard for me to make calls out from work, but they don't seem to respond to email, but others have said on the phone it's been handled well.

I have an Acer X1230PK projector (only £200 but not 3Dvision certified) and Optoma ZD101 DLPlink glasses, the DLP glasses give a MUCH better picture than the Nvidia glasses, sharper and brighter (better contrast). In DLP link mode the Nvidia glasses just look "muddy" and the 3D effect is also reduced.

I think 3Dvision certified projectors must have 3 modes: 2D, 3Dvision, and DLPlink. In 3Dvision mode the projector must change the timing / brightness / color to match the Nvidia glasses and so they look ok, but in DLP link mode the "white flash" is not blocked so the contrast is really bad.

My projector has no IR / 3Dvision mode, if I turn 3Dlink mode off the Nvidia glasses look much brighter but I get very bad ghosting / cross-talk on bright videos, I can do nothing to stop this by changing brightness so I think it might be a timing problem???

@mikemav - do you get any ghosting in IR mode? I am not sure if you will have the same problems on your projector if the same hardware has been certified it should work ok with the Nvidia glasses in IR mode (DLPlink off)

I'm sure my X1230PK has the exact same hardware as the certified X1261 (I used the inf for that model to get it working) I might try flashing it with the X1261 firmware if I can find out how to do it...

Hi NickDvB,
I have a Acer H5360 projector, and that does have the 3 options you mentioned above. You can turn off 3D, have it set for Nvidia 3D vision, or you can set it for DLP Link 3D.

Though I don't have DLP Link 3D glasses yet, I tried to set the projector to DLP Link mode, and used my NVidia glasses connected to my laptop, and I was able to watch movie in 3D. I ordered DLP Link glasses, and expecting them in a week or two at most. I'll try using those with NVidia emitter and see how it goes. I'll post my findings asap.

Hi srichand, I would be interested to know what you think of the DLPlink glasses. The nvidia glasses will still activate in all 3 of the projectors 3D modes, but in "3D off" mode you might get ghosting, I eventually managed to cure the ghosting but I had to turn the projector's brightness / contrast down to 30% and then reduce the video gamma in the nvidia control panel, but the image was so dark it was unwatchable.

My DLPlink glasses work great though, the contrast is good and they never loose sync, but as I said before you can't really use both types of glasses at the same time becase in DLP 3D mode, which must be enabled to make the DLPlink glasses work, the contrast will be really bad when using nvidia glasses (the image looks really washed-out). You can test this for yourself by switching between 3Dvision mode and DLP 3D mode whilst wearing the nvidia glasses.

Some people also report that the nvidia emitter interfears with some models of DLPlink glasses causing them to loose sync, but I have not noticed this with mine. What type of DLPlink glasses did you get? These are the best I have found so far, they look great and are half the price of the nvidia glasses:

http://www.ultimate3dheaven.com/uldlpliwi3dg.html (cheaper)

http://www.curtpalme.com/DLPLinkGlasses.shtm (same type but black)

Let me know how you get on,
