does SLI give good results with a fast and a slower card on 3d vision?
I know, SLI has seen better times. But one day it will be working again...
What I wonder is: Does it make sense to mix e.g. a 980 Ti with a 770 card? or does that not really give a higher frame rate? or give unregular image refreshes as one card is slower?

SLI Requires the same card on the same BIOS revision, with 2 different model cards the best you could hope for is to run one as a dedicated physicx card.

You can not "SLI" (link) two differing Nvidia GPUs. Both graphics cards must match in Vram amount, model# (ie:GTX970), and thus Cores.
If you were to use the 980ti you could then use your 770 as a dedicated PhysX card in "specific" Nvidia PhysX coded game titles. Other times the card will just sit idle consuming additional power and introducing heat to the GTX980ti above.
Using the 770 for PhysX would only be benificial in a few game titles.
