But I will get excited Andrew when I know that this thing will work with QUAD-SLI and DX9 games. What kind of game is Crysis 2 right now? Oh yeah, it's a DX9 game. /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> Of course you hardly need two GTX 590's to run that game well as you demonstrated it across 3 monitors. But a future proofing system AND not having to go back and forth in the NV control panel turning quad on for DX11/DX10 and turning quad off in DX9 is a must.
Don't believe me? Check out guru3d.com's review of Quad SLI GTX 590 and compare the Modern Warfare 2 (DX9) benchmark to Metro 2033 (DX11) or Battlefield Bad Company 2 (DX11). Can we say driver bug still in DX9? Of courset this isn't even with 3D Vision, but the problem is still manifest.
I'm a potential customer for TWO of these, in order to have the BEST. But I won't dare touch one of them until I see these cards SLI'd and the problem fixed for DX9 in 3D Vision. I'm not going to play Crysis 2 and switch over and play BFBC2 and having to turn QUAD SLI off, that's not a fix. That's only evidence that I partially wasted my money.
Your best card is on the table and the problem is still there Nvidia. Fix it and fix all the dual gpu cards. I'd like to know that I'm handing off my two GTX 295's to a capable and workable solution!
Is QUAD SLI necessary? Well if Metro 2033 is an indication of what PC gaming can be, and someone wants to run 60 frames per eye with DX 11 maxed out, then that is an unquestionable Y-E-S!

No it won't be possible Acid, they're too different (different vRAM amounts per GPU for starters, which is enough to make SLi not possible).
Also, 3 GTX 580s run Metro 2033 maxed out at 90+ FPS, so Quad-SLi is hardly necessary... matter o' fact even 3-Way isn't really necessary by today's games standards. 2-Way of GTX 580s, or a single GTX 590, will run almost any game maxed out, and maintain an average of greater than 40fps, which is perfectly fine for playing, at a 1080p resolution. The whole 3D and Surround things, to me, are a waste of money, but if you wanna go for that, have at it, but be ready to get 3-4 GPUs (GTX 590s or 3 580s) to run such a resolution/settings.

Meh, oh well, just thought I'd ask. Thanx Goddess.
Doesnt bother me too much though. My current rig runs Black Ops maxed with 16xAA IN 3D, at solid vsyncd 60fps. And Metro 2033 DX11 maxed IN 3D, at around constant 40 fps. Heh, plenty fast enough for a couple years. I'll maybe pop in a 3rd 570 next year for a tiny boost. Should be a hundred bucks cheaper by then.

Goddess84,
It will start to become necessary right when you enable 3D Vision. I doubt either QUAD or TRI will get 60 frames per eye in 3D in Metro. More likely both hit in the 40's and the 50's, acceptable but at that point justifiable as well.
Not to mention that one could save a little bit of money buying two cards instead of three, and this would be a better solution IF (and this is a big IF) Nvidia gets their drivers fixed for QUAD SLI/DX9/3D Vision.

I'd try ebay, look and see what the going nominal rate for used 480's are and go from there.
Very impressive card, especially the thermals and acoustics, although I think Nvidia went a bit conservative on the clocks to keep rated TDP under control. Curious to see what kind OCs are possible by users, TDP be damned.

This wasn't always true, they must have changed it recently as VRAM or even SP counts alone weren't enough to make two variants incompatible in SLI on some past cards. Some examples as recently as the GTS 250 were compatible with different memory amounts like 512MB and 1GB. I'm also pretty sure the non-reference 2GB GTX 285s were compatible in SLI with the reference 1GB versions. Even different variants with various SP counts were compatible like the 8800 GTS with 96 and 112SP and the GTX 260 192 and 216SP. Maybe they changed it to improve compatibility and troubleshooting problems or to make QA easier, but still a step backward sadly.

Thanks for posting about the DX9 Quad SLI issue. I wasn't aware of the issue and this can be a contributing factor on my next upgrade purchase. I would definitely like to keep my games library running without fiddling with my settings between them.
On the specifications for the GTX 590 they mention you must use DVI #1 and DVI #2 on both cards and that DVI #3 can not be used (GTX 590 Specs). I thought NVIDIA 3dVision was only tri-monitor capable. So what would the fourth DVI output be doing?

Yes it very much does influence our purchase decision here, because to buy 1 GTX 590, you have already by that conscious decision opened yourself up for a second one in lieu of "such and such" game isn't maxed out by one (provided the funding and the will is their of course). Most games wouldn't do that now IN 3D except for maybe Metro, but to fail to recognize that there will be games that do limit one GTX 590 within two years (in 3D Vision), one year, or even six months from now, is to be far too short sighted. I'm not saying anybody should go out and buy 2 of these now by any means, BUT one should do careful planning. If one is a 3D Vision fan and wants a GTX 590, I say we hold back and watch Nvidia and be asking the right questions. $700 is a big commitment for a single card, so one better know what they are getting themselves into. The potential in that card is undoubtedly there (which makes it the apple on the tree), but the support from Nvidia has to be equally there too, and not just a half-way effort (good 2D, bad 3D), but it has to be their fully featured product in the most extreme manner.
Of course, if one is just interested in 2D gaming and not 3D, I would just go buy a single GTX 560 TI and be done with it.

Goddess84,
It will start to become necessary right when you enable 3D Vision.

Even different variants with various SP counts were compatible like the 8800 GTS with 96 and 112SP and the GTX 260 192 and 216SP. Maybe they changed it to improve compatibility and troubleshooting problems or to make QA easier, but still a step backward sadly.

No it won't be possible Acid, they're too different (different vRAM amounts per GPU for starters, which is enough to make SLi not possible).
This wasn't always true, they must have changed it recently as VRAM or even SP counts alone weren't enough to make two variants incompatible in SLI on some past cards. That's certainly what my aim is too, we'll just have to wait, watch, and see and possibly do a little nagging to get Nvidia to fix quad/3D vision/dx9. Dual GPU cards definitely have the cool factor, I still love my 295s.
