Hoping to call in a favour from someone solutiongaming and sound card issues
Firstly sorry for posting a non direct 3D question on this forum (I do ask about external sound card and 3d vision), but ive come to trust the input from this forum and hope someone might be able to help, an
My problem:
having bought the Tritton AX pro 5.1 headphones - I discover my pc's sound is lacking the ability to output 5.1 only stereo through the optical port
firstly my spec
I have the Asus Rampage ii Extreme, which comes with a SupremeFX X-Fi Audio Card, which i understand is a stripped down creative card that is actually pants.
even worse, I read that my motherboard doesn;t really have room for a proper sized sounds card, hence them shipping with this crap mini cardI learnt of ths size issue here amoung other places: -
Is it possible with this board to to run a soundcard in the top PCI-e slot? ... yes it is, I did it really easy just bend four little heatsink pins, .... 3-way SLI 280's on a rampage 2 extreme with and i7 and i was

Can anyone suggest a sound card that has optical out and 5.1 which does fit on my motherboard without me having to damage heatsink to make fit (im WINDOWS 7 64bit)
I was considering some of below barring fit problems
* PCI Express X-Fi Titanium
* Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro (external) this would solve my fitting issue but are external any good, would the fact it usb mess with 3d vision? (product link below)
http://uk.store.creative.com/products/product.aspx?catid=1&pid=20055
* ASUS Xonar Essence STX
or a card from this link or anything anyone recommends
ps _ ive read this in the xonar review "Unlike the HT Omega Claro Plus+, the Essence STX is a PCI express (PCIe) card rather than just PCI. Although technically PCIe is better than regular PCI, using this sound card will take up a PCIe slot. For some this isn't an issue because they don't need all of them but for others this may be an issue. Most motherboards these days should have plenty of slots and shouldn't be a problem for the majority of people thinking about getting a sound card."
maybe I can get round the room problem by choosing pci over pcie ??

As far as my experiance goes ,a Creative card ,doesn't have any true 5.1 output on the optical output.
It's sound like 5.1 ,but it's not filtered correctly.
For example..If you connect the optical output to any a/v reciever it will not react to dts/5.1 or whatever bitstream it sends...
If you want to connect your headphones..it might work, but with Creative you never know...
Don't get me wrong I own a Creative soundcard and it's far better then an onboard soundcard ,but it's software driver don't work right...
You probably have more luck with an Auzen soundcard ,that is really dts certified card...
There are also USB soundcards on the market....
Btw pci or pci-e doesn't matter much for soundcard.
I remember the Theatron works also with the optical output and dts.
I tried that card ,but wasn't impressed with the software,..but it's cheap and works.
I found this german forum-thread.
The Creative Sound Blaster Fatal1ty Professional didn't fit, they had to cut 5 Pins of the heatsink(not a good solution I think).
http://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/mainboards-und-arbeitsspeicher/139184-asus-rampage-ii-extrem-creative-sound-blaster-fatal1ty-professional-2.html
But the Fatality Professional has this big housing.
The X-Fi Titanium don't has this housing but I guess the board of the card will also hit the heatsink (same length as the Professional).
Don't expect the best sound-quality with those USB-cards.
I had a Audigy 2 NX and I wasn't very lucky with it(yes I know, its an older one).
Best "external" solution for my old laptop was the Audigy2ZS for PCMCIA-Slot - excellent sound but PCMCIA. Had an Optical out but no Dolby Digital Live.
@Ferry: All Creative cards that come with "Dolby Digital Live" should output true 5.1 over optical/digital connectors. Maybe this doesn't work correctly?

managed to get them working by forgetting the optical lead and simply using the 4 jacks into the onboard sound, seems to work but at what quality loss not sure
correction:
actually seems to work with the optical now, the windows test fails but ingame seems fine.
Found this simple sound test for 5.1 - works a treat, and pretty happy with headphones

as far as I know auzentech sound cards are by far the best around, give them a look. I've had a few along the years and they always delivered.
As for me, now I cannot use real speakers so I'm incredibly happy with my razor megalodon headphones, they're 7.1 and they really give a great surround effect and the sound quality is amazing, they're expensive but they're that good.
As always great work with your website, keep up the good work, the only bad thing about it is the name sorry, solutiongaming never sounded too catchy for me /unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

the name is fine, the thing is that there's nothing in 'solutiongaming' that suggests that it's a highly specialized website dedicated to stereoscopic gaming on PC. It took me a while to visit the website because nothing suggested me it provided so much good info for 3d gaming, at least 3dsolutiongaming would have given me a clue, but that name is a bit too long /confused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> In any case content is good and that's what really matters.
