Odd temperature spike with 3d Vision Enabled Only when 3d Vision toggled on temp's skyrocket!
Hi everyone. I always thought I had an account here, but I guess not /bloated.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':X' />. I've been assembling P.C.s for awhile, but I'm still an amateur at best.
Any who, for what it's worth my major system specs are an i7 950 (no O.C.), 8gb DDR3, and GTX 460 1gb SLI'd. My i7 temperature does get up there during gameplay (80 C or so if I'm maxing out something, overclocking the GPU's) which is sadly disappointing considering the O.C. potential and whatnot - will be buying liquid cooling soon. However, my temperature woes are coming from my video cards!
If I have 3d Vision toggled off I am able to do 15-20% overclock and never see either card go over 70 C - micro ATX mobo places these cards very close to one another so my top card is often in the 70's range whilst my second card stays around 50 or so. When I turn on 3d Vision, my GPU usage will largely stay the same - perhaps it'll peak more often than with 3d Vision off but I do run into one problem...my GPU1's temperature peaks at around 99-101 C - too close to the shut off temp. for my liking - plus it's almost Winter and I hate to play PC games while freezing!
Any suggestions? This hasn't been a new problem with the new beta drivers - it's always been an issue but now that I've added the O.C. during gameplay I'm worried about doing damage. Is 3d Vision supposed to raise my GPU temp's immensely? Even with no overclock my temperature for GPU1 rises significantly with 3d Vision enabled.

It's probably more or less what you'd expect, your card is pushing 2x the geometry and filling twice the pixels when running in 3D.
In SLI in particular GPU temperatures have more to do with case design than anything else.
If you can ge a fan to blow air directly between the cards and pull colder air into the intake of the top card you can dramatically reduce the temperature difference .

Yea micro atx(small case) and two cards sli (460's are power hungry heat heavy cards) can be problematic. Id consider adding an exhaust and make sure a strong fan is pointing at cards. Micro atx isnt really the problem imo. I have a 3 sli mobo with a card stacked on after another. Its that the case is so small air doesnt circulate.

Yeah as others stated, this is normal as your cards are going to be pushed to their limits if you aren't hitting the 60FPS per eye cap in 3D Vision (not easy to do). SLI can compound the problem for that top card, you just need better case airflow and next time you upgrade, consider buying an SLI board that allows at least 1 slot worth of space between your GPUs. I've run 3x dual-slot GPUs together and it definitely makes that first card run hotter. The other option as other's stated is to get something like AfterBurner and use the fan profile to ramp up fan speeds higher at a given temperature. I would personally try to add more case fans or get a better airflow case first, but if the GPU temps are concerning you that would be the quickest way to cool things down assuming the fan isn't hitting 100% duty cycle already and still hitting 95C+.
