3DTV Mac Compatibility?
I own a MacBook with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and was wondering if anyone could be kind enough to let me know if the 3DTV software will compatible under Mac OS or Windows with a mini display port to HDMI adapter. If this GPU isn't compatible I would like to find out if any other Mac GPUs are. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time,
Pablo

Sorry but i don't understand the point... What do you want to do in 3D with your MacBook on a 3DTV ?

1) Play Games in 3D ?

The 9400M chip can't do miracles in 2D with "heavy" games... So what do you expect in 3D ? Some old games will be OK...

2) Play Bluray 3D on a 3DTV ?

Is MacBook able to play 2D Bluray already ?

3) Install Windows 7 on the MacBook + 3DTV PLAY + TotalMediaTheatre 3 + 3D Plugin to play Bluray 3D on your 3DTV ?

Yes you could...

But if you want to play a BD 3D ISO, then you must choose TMT 3 + 3D Plugin (PowerDVD Mark II can't stand ISOs)

Last thing : NVIDIA 3DTV PLAY is still not released... So you will have to wait to know how it works...

Thanks for your input guys! It seems that at this time NVIDIA 3D isn't possible with any Mac under Windows. Below is a conversation I had with a very nice NVIDA support rep:

Thanks for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

NVIDIA 3D TV Play software will only be available for Windows 7. There are no public plans for Mac OS support.

Thanks for the info and quick response Troy. Could you please comment on if this would be compatible with the graphics card and video adapter I originally mentioned if running under Windows 7? What are the graphic card requirements and what if any Mac NVIDIA graphics are supported if running under Windows 7?

Thanks again!

Response (Troy) 08/18/2010 06:24 PM

The preliminary GPU's for Windows 7 are as follows.

•Desktop GPU: GeForce GTX 480, GTX 470, GTX 465, GTX 460, GTX 295, GTX 285, GTX 275, GTX 260, GTS 250, GTS 240, GT 240, and 9800 GT.

•Laptop GPUs: GeForce GTS 360M, GTS 350M, GT 335M, GT 330M, GT 325M, GT 320M

As far as Mac Boot Camp support is concerned Apple has not allowed NVIDIA to provide Windows 7 drivers that support their newest laptop products released this year.

Thanks for all info Troy! I know that all the latest Macs with NVIDIA cards function under Windows 7 so I was wondering if you could please elaborate on the drivers issue?

Thanks once again!

Response (Troy) 08/19/2010 01:53 PM

I cant really comment on issues. Can you define these issues with specific details and how to reproduce them in a bug report?

I'm not having any issues I was just asking for you to please clarify your statement that "As far as Mac Boot Camp support is concerned Apple has not allowed NVIDIA to provide Windows 7 drivers that support their newest laptop products released this year" since all the latest Macs perform fine under Windows 7 with the provided NVIDIA drivers from Bootcamp.

Thanks again!

Oh ok I'm not referring to the drivers provided via Boot Camp but the reference drivers provided on NVIDIA.COM

Isn't running Windows 7 on a Mac the same as any other PC and you can install any drivers that are available for your hardware?

Thanks a million!

Response (Troy) 08/20/2010 10:41 AM

Yes, but NVIDIA is not allowed yet to provide Windows 7 reference drivers that support their newest laptop products released this year. You cant install NVIDIA.COM drivers on these new Mac books and expect it to work.

Thanks for all the info Troy! I appreciate your time. Could you please explain the difference between reference drivers and the other drivers? What prevents NVIDIA from creating reference drivers for their own graphics cards under Windows on a Mac?

Thanks once again

Response (Troy) 08/20/2010 12:23 PM

Boot Camp driver updates are provided by Apple. NVIDIA Reference drivers are also distributed via NVIDIA.COM. They are not the same.

Apple legal contracts prevents this.

So if I understand correctly 3DTV won't be compatible with any Mac under Windows & because Apple does allow NVIDIA to provide drivers outside the ones they choice for bootcamp?

Thanks!

This is correct. Their policy is subject to change in the future.
