as for what I want out of 3D gaming? I play games for aesthetic pleasure (the artistic presentation of gameworld and characters)
Gotcha. To me it's all in the service of immersion but regardless the addition of the third dimension adds a lot artistically.
I think we're losing track of the real numbers though. A 720p DLP projector is 1 million pixels per eye. The 720p Rift dev kit is 0.5 million pixels per eye. This 1080p Rift prototype is 1 million pixels per eye. By the raw numbers, it's the same as a 720p projector, only half of what a 1080p active 3D display offers.
In other words, it's not actually a 1080p 3D display.
Therefore, if 720p DLP users are skeptical about even a "1080p" Rift, it's because they know it's roughly the same resolution they already have but with a different aspect ratio and most likely a larger frame of view.

Surprised more of you arn't more stoked about this. Immersion for me is the most important thing. Higher resolution can help that, as you forget about pixels. 3D helps that 10x as it starts to become a real world with a window to it. OR allows that would to wrap around you, for you to be in thhe middle of it. I think even a rollercoaster sim will make your stomachw churn on a big dip. That immersion sounds awesome ti me! I guess half of you don't agree, yet.
Thanks for the vid birthright! It looks great, and remember, this is the proper consumer model, 1st model. When 3D was launched it was far from perfect. I think this product already looks very advanced considering this is new tech. If they have a yearly hardware re-fresh, it could get super exciting very quickly.

I will be buying this 100% regardless of reviews at £400 or less. With great reviews and a killer app i would pay up to £600 without to much thinking. I really think that with the right games, most people on here will end up converts (unless motion sickness is an inherent problem that can't be resolved). But i think with faster displays, faster fps and popping a few sea sickness pills before playing (way hey) all will be good.

I am excited for the OR. I honestly have no problem with anything hardware related with it. I just dont think there aren't nearly going to be as many titles as people think. I just really believe people are getting excited for the wrong reasons. May be a few mainstream titles here/there but its going to be an indie platform imo.
Im honestly concerned that its death will be caused by hype, everyone thinks its for everyone and believes they can play anything. There are too many people selling a Utopia future. Its partly due to people who have no concept of 3D/VR and perhaps as far as 3d crowd goes helixmodding. Dont even get me started on the fact that I think too many people interested in VR who think mainstream/big name titles are coming don't even have computers good enough computers to run them. Their is going to be some rude awakenings.
As far as renderer's. I really doubt they will get many titles to work. If you don't believe me. Raise your hand if you ever started a first person shooter and guns depth seems off. Thats at 70-80 fov. Now increase FOV to 100-110. They arent designed for it.
Regardless, I follow 3dizzy on youtube. Check this out

I hear what you are saying dude, and mostly agree. But i think you are off about guns depth etc. Guns in fps are unrealistically large and placed in the wrong place (very high in your fov). This is only a problem due to conceptions of how a fps should look like (people like the gun in their face). When one company gets it right for vr (aka, gun, legs body all in perspective and correct position) and gamers say that works, all other companies will 'borrow' that idea. Just like how halo forever changed console fps controls and the re-gen bar.
Once one great, shining example main stream of vr has been made, e.g. Im betting on Hl3, the work for other devs is less as they can see what worked and what didn't. If one killer app sells enough and raises awareness, you could end up with 1 killer app a year, which will be enough imo to get things geared for OR 2 and a second wave of energy.
I am obviously looking at it through positive rose tinted specs, as i so dearly want it to take off to replace the seemingly dying nvidia 3D brand.

The ones that are unrealistically large are not a problem. Guns that are too big are a slight annoyance but manageable. A gun being right in you face is not a huge issue since well its right in your face. Play ones where its further in depth. Its hard. Set fov to 110 in borderlands 2/half life 2/ Painkiller/ etc.
Black Mesa is definetly the best example of this. 2 weapons are too low in depth out of 12. There are actually more that are too high in depth then too low. The reset are normal. When I posted game patch the complaint was the weapons were too low in depth. So only solution I could find was increasing the convergence on ALL weapons. Now there were no complaints. So the big weapons were BIGGER but the weapons that were too low in depth were better off. Its hard to put something in front of your face and say nope its ten feet down.
I am pretty proud of my new borderlands 2 patch but I really don't recommend going above 92 fov. Set it to 110 and walk around sanctum. You'll see.
A developer can fix this, yes. A renderer can not[I jury rigged something in past for black mesa but its hard to do in 99.9% of games]. This is just one of many issues a renderer will face on top of tilt, etc. Occulus rift needs something not only as good as tridef/ 3d vision but better just to break even.
Im not sure on HL3. I dont think valve doesnt love VR as much as people think I believe. People forget they are a business. They said they are testing the response. They want to see how big the response is as far as steam games/community spotlight. If no response, probably no more games/

ok fair enough, modders are going to have hell to try to fix it (probably wont) but it's still the same problem underlying. That the weapon is rendered on a completely separate plane as the rest of the game, it was never supposed to be seen as 3D. I'm pretty sure this will change at some point. The weapon being set as it is because of a highly narrow fov and they want to make sure you can see the weapon in all it's glory. I'm sure realistic modelling will happen at some point, and that gun will actually be connected to a virtual hand and to your virtual torso as part of a fully rendered character.
As for Gabe Newell, I think no one knows what he's planning. He was incredibly pro OR in the run up to launch, and was vocal about devs should support it. He was also very vocal about how KB&M doesn't cut it anymore. There is a reason why HL3 is not out yet. It is a 100% cash cow, so why sit on it? I choose to believe that Valve has been waiting for the right tech to come along to make it, kinda like J. Cameron with Avatar. They are sat on a huge amount of good will, and so I think after all this time a simple FPS (however good) will not cut it.
Time will tell, although I think however much you question if I'm right, we both hope that I am!
Headcrabs wrapping their claws over your face. YES PLEASE!!! Also we have seen 'laser guns' hardware etc. Isn't it about time for a 'laser crow bar'. 8D

Also, we shouldn't forget or support in tf2 and hl2 and all the artwork valve made. That's huge support for a beta device! Imagine what support the consumer model will get ;-)
Heres some other good news:

Regarding 1080p “This will be the lowest possible resolution we end up shipping to consumers,” Iribe said. “Less than a year after our Kickstarter campaign began, we’re already able to offer this for the same price that we sell the [720p] developer version for.”
$300 for a 1080p panel. Bargain toy!

thanks for the link foreverseeking, great read! 1080p for $300 already, and they mention that's the bare minimum, so we can expect it to get even better, wow.
I'm also surprised by the lack of enthusiasm in this forums since 3d main asset is added immersion, so I really supposed that 3d users would be the most hyped about it. I understand all the doubts everyone has, but still omg the possibilities are mindblowing.
I'm completely sure that support would be scarce like eqzitara says, there are a ton of genres that don't go well will OR, any 3rd person games, strategy games, etc., still some games with VR could change gaming forever. On any game, shooting someone is nothing extraordinary and you can kill a thousand NPCs, but suddenly on VR killing someone could be a lot tougher now.
In any case, Oculus Rift now supports the source engine, UE3, UE4, apparently Frostbite engine is being worked on, the Unity Engine, and maybe more, so basically, all the big ones. It also works with Tridef, which has a huge list of supported games. Implementation may vary, but still, that's a good starting point for some solid support.

I'm super enthused!!!!!! I'll buy the consumer model even if it cost 1000.00. Lets hope the hype continues, and meets most peoples expectations.
I'll all about immersion and VR sound like the most immersive gaming experience we can possible have other then a holodeck or matrix.
Also, I don't think that anyone is expecting the the Rift to be the end all of VR. It's only the begining and it can only GET BETTER. 3 years from now we will have a curved OLED VR with 8k resolution. Bookmark this thread and you will see I was right.
This is exactly right. We suffer heavily from Confirmation Bias. (An actual psychology term, that GTA spoofed by having you see the car you are driving show up a lot more often.)
No, it ain't. The widespread hype was evident to me long before I ever got into 3D gaming, or set foot in this forum. And that hype came from the mainstream gaming press, mainstream gaming forums, and prestigious awards at E3 etc. Those are people who largely don't give a crap about regular 3D.
I mean, the Oculus Rift got its own front cover on Edge magazine for cryin' out loud. Guess what didn't make any Edge front covers this year? The Xbox One.
Maybe the OR will suceed, maybe it won't. But saying that it's not currently caught a lot of mainstream attention is just nonsense.

Whatever you say my man. But if you stop 20 people on the street, how many will have any idea what Edge magazine is?
Hell, I've never heard of it, and probably should have.
I think we might have a different idea of what constitutes 'mainstream'.
