My prediction: This has absolutely nothing to do with VR or 3D. It's something much more banal, like online game-streaming or something. I hope I'm wrong.
The Rift will NEVER see the light of day. GUARANTEED. There is no way they can supply thousands upon thousands of units being such a small company. They are building an IP in the VR world. They will be bought out by someone and the guys behind it (the Rift) will be board members and become filthy rich in the process. Maybe even Nvidia has already bought them out.
How do you think all the big companies became big? :D They didn't just drop from the sky. They started as small companies, and became big as they got successful. Oculus will do just fine. They already have the momentum and market interest to become much larger if they wish. They've already shipped thousands of devkits, and they'll have no problem in shipping many thousands more retail kits when the time comes. They needn't even manufacture their own units, but might partner with an existing manufacturer. If they can't meet the demand, then even better for them, since it'll make people even more eager to get one (just like Apple purposely makes too few of their new phone each year to create an articificial shortage, so that people will camp at their stores overnight).
Also, for those that don't know Valve is announcing some big things related to hardware in the next week. Steam Box most likely but, Valve may have bought out Oculus as well.
Valve has no reason to buy the Oculus Rift. Valve's primary goal is to get as many people as possible playing PC games. That's the purpose of the Steam Box: to win back gamers away from xbox, playstation, and iOS. The Rift is already a PC-centric device, so it will draw gamers to the PC without Valve needing to get financially involved. Besides, Valve doesn't buy companies out. It sometimes takes modders and talented amateurs and gives them jobs. But as far as I know they've never tried to buy out a company. It's just not their style.

Dont know what to belive here but who knows, interesting read never the less! ( If you were wondering what Nvidia was unveiling soon that wasn't a video card, this is it) "[Nvidia] reached out to us and have been extremely cooperative," the employee said. "They even let us use their streaming tech – the one they showcase on the Shield (which is getting Steam integration, btw, as are all Tegra devices), even though we told them it would have to work on AMD cards. If you were wondering what Nvidia was unveiling soon that wasn't a video card, this is it. They're the first choice for Steam Box hardware. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/steamos-steam-box-reference-design-source-2-half-life-3,24388.html#xtor=RSS-181

Bah, looks like it was right. I said it was probably going to be something about streaming. I'm so sick of hearing hype about streaming. As far as I'm concerned, it would make gaming worse not better, by adding latency without adding anything else of value. I'm happy that gamers without much money will one day be able to play hi-tech games without a hi-tech PC. But it worries me when something that would only really benefit the low end of the market is hyped up as cutting edge and the next revolution in gaming.

I am actually looking forward to efficient streaming. One thing it adds for me especially in Multiplayer games is an efficient way to implement anti cheat precautions. If Video is the only thing that the client PC has or is able to process, then unless the server is hacked I shouldn't have to worry about developers writing hacks for games.

I kind of think nvidia showing something to Mark Rein / steam box are unrelated.

Just one of several good uses for streaming tech. But imagine if all games today were streamed. Sure, you'd get less cheating and less expensive gaming PCs. But you'd also likely get: -very limited graphics customisation -A "good" experience, but not a "great" one (the server-side PCs will be strong, but will definitely not be top-of-the-line...that would be too expensive) -Probably very little room for non-traditional high-end things like 120fps, surround gaming, ENB, etc. -limited or impossible modability -latency (considering the amount of hate vsync gets already, I'm surprised people are expecting streaming to be popular) -no helix mod......so basically no 3D! It sounds like a horror to me, actually
They used like 20% of the framework [the plastic] from an hmz-t1 when showing the prototype. I thought they stripped out the guts. Having briefly owned (and dismantled one), it sure looked like the OLED displays and the circuit board to me. I'll agree the other 80 percent was horribly designed junk that made focus and comfort intolerable, but that 20 percent was the real important 20 percent;)
You talk as if you've seen an Nvidia prototype VR? How do you know its the innards of the HMZ-1? This is all news to me.
Nvidia showed the video and mentioned buying a consumer grade device. I know it's the innards because I fought a long battle to try and get the focus to not be blurry in the corners. Unfortunately, it was designed for narrow IPD (inter pupiltary distance)and that made people with wide eyes not be able to focus 100 percent (unless you jammed it into your nose). I spent a bunch of time playing with that thing trying to overcome the inherent flaws with the optics and my wide eyes/big nose. Unforunately, that means I'm 100 percent familiar with all the components of the HMZ. And that's most certainly what it is. 100 percent sure. EDIT: Now the thing they reveal could be totally different from the previous prototype, but I was originally referencing how that fancy tech was in no way ready for release. They could, however, be releasing something more akin to the Rift.
