While things have settled down to 2.5 manufacturers creating mainstream video hardware in the PC space I'm still not sure if the PC market is 'attractive' enough to promote more developers that are exclusive to it. Dedicated gamers with deep pockets may keep up and have the latest (or 1-2 generation down scale) hardware but the hardware and software is all over the map. Everything from XP to W8 is out there along with being powered by 8800's and 690's, dual core to 8-Core CPU's.
A console on the other hand represents a stable platform of known hardware/software capabilities. Is it any small wonder that developers are able to optimize the heck out of their games and squeeze out such amazing titles on 7yo hardware?
I actually bought a PS3+3DTV for playing games in Stereoscopic 3D. Granted once bought there were only a few titles that had decent 3D and the effect the others provided was not much better then the 'fake some 3D please' button on my Samsung TV. The lack of PS3 3D titles lead me back to PC gaming and Nvidia hardware/3DPlay software.
The outright amazing thing to me was that at 720P/1080P resolutions there are titles for the PS3 that look absolutely amazing. BlackOpsI looked and played good. Uncharted3 looks absolutely and plays stunning. MassEffect2 was a bit of a mixed bag, screen tearing and impossible load times I switched to the PC for ME3.
I to was a bit disappointed that Sony did not even mention 3D support during the PS4 announcement. However given that Sony has a 3D/VR headset I have high hopes that the PS4 will be able to push a proper 3D image out to it and to any connected 3DTV.
Will I buy a PS4? Humm... my $400 PS3 gives me solid 720P video, 7.1 sound and a few 3D titles while my PC (which cost 5x as much) gives me the same or better video, intermittent 7.1 (but mostly Stereo) sound and while I can play more games in 3D, most titles require tons of tweaking and 3rd party software patches to work right.
Maybe we need someone like the late Steve Job's to revolutionize PC gaming and take it to the next level and beyond?
hehehehehe Not even Jesus Christ could save pcs. It is an inevitable fact, PC Gaming is destined to be just for MMOs Indies and not more than that.
The Pcs as a gaming platform, are relics of the past. What we will tell our grandchildren that we played them :).
Things like that are already about to hit the market - There's that gamepad on Kickstarter (can't remember what it's called - is it the OUYA or something?)
Hey SnickerSnack, there is other consoles on the market (or soon to come), but they are complete jokes. I am quite certain Ouya will fade into obscurity within days after its release. Why on earth would you buy an android based console when most phones have the same or better graphics capabilities than it.
That's why Apple would have the market cornered if it wanted to. All it needs to do is release a controller. Ipad 4 and great and iphone 5 and great have monstrous power (before anyone starts, I know android has extremely powerful phones and tablets to, but the android marketplace does not the market reach or power as apples app store does)
People used to argue for multiple devices, and leaving a phone as just a phone. How things have changed. Now imagine adding "games console" onto the list of things it can do, with current mobile hardware that really is now a real possibility.
Apple already have a few ps2 games on the app store, at what point is it considered a console? Anyway, if you look at it, there is a reason why Gabe Newell said the biggest threat to any "steam box" would be Apple, not MS or Sony in his opinion. I think he's right, there is a sleeping giant there that could ruin everyone's day (other then casual gamers) if it decides to act.
So please, everyone from every faith and religion, pray to whatever god, goddess or animal that you hold dear. To pray that Apple does not cut into the gaming market where it hurts until AAA blockbuster means "doodle jump HD"
I think the big hope for 3d is the oculus. I can see all 3d communities converging around the device, even more now that Nvidia has forgotten 3d vision, so community support is going to be huge. Media support is quite positive, and you have some big names interested in it, though they haven't done much about it yet. Hopefully, the steambox will seize the opportunity and make the Oculus their trump card. Can you imagine Half Life 3 exclusive for the steambox with full Oculus support? That would be crazy, and rival anything PS4/xbox720 offers.
My last bastion of hope this tech "generation" is with Oculus Rift. Maybe working with steam and making it a standard for the steambox which should be aimed at the serious gamer. It would seem to fit the bill that Valve has been fart arsing around waiting for new tech to come alone to make Half Life 3 shine, and OR might be it. They love their IP, and are in no rush to release it before its time. Problem however is this

Steam box seems to have bitten the dust. Maybe Gabe got wind of how much next gen consoles would be, and his accountants decided that they could not compete on the price to encourage people away from consoles. Or maybe I'm reading to much into it, but it seems strange to fire your dept on the console creation division if your serious about releasing it.
Without something like the steam box or attachment to a console, I am starting to fear that the OR won't have the platform needed to get games ready for it. Still, when a higher res consumer model is out, i'm buying one anyway, and with 2 GTX 880's in SLI i'm going to rock up the thin selection of games like there was no tomorrow.

To people saying the specs on PS3 are low. It is low compared to pc, BUT that doesnt matter. Games built on PC are built for EVERY spec available. Well here it is, playstation executive Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that 3D is "not a focus". Also all forms of 4K upscaling have been 100% knocked on the head. But who cares, 4K TV's will not be affordable to mere mortals for a few years yet.

So that's kinda sad, one console out of the two big ones down and i will guess that the nextbox will likely follow suit. So like the ps3, it will be up to the developers whether to implement 3D, may the vocal petitions start here :-)

Ouch. So they released a handful of fake 3D games on a platform that could not properly power them and gave up. (sigh) There was such synergy in 3D that won't likely happen again for decades. People were claiming to make content, OEM's were making devices and crappy/fake 3D could be found everywhere.
@foreverseeking
We have to understand that games for most folk are but a distraction. Something our parents bought for us or sat us in front of to keep us occupied. A 'casual gamer' might be looking for a 5min or 1hr distraction. The Wii is a great example of this. Add very short meaningless encounters to funky graphics and simplicity that just spelled fun for the masses and out sold Sony+MS. One of the big problems with that was when the users outgrew or wanted more 'meat' to their entertainment, the Wii was lacking. The hardware was never designed to keep up with the big kids and adults.
Forgetting that Android has overshadowed Apple in the phone and soon Tablet markets I think an Android box for the living room might be just the thing - to compete with Nintendo that is. The problem Nintendo and Sony have is bridging the gap from handheld game device -to- phone -to- tablet -to- big screen. Here's where Google/Android, MS or even Apple could make a big splash. Apple has tried to get into the living room but has failed (but has most the other bases covered). I fully expect MS to slap W8/Metro on their new Xbox and attempt full synergy across phone/tab/desktop/living room.
The only good news in any of this is that having one or more Consoles being 'PCish' the games that are optimized to run on them may not suck so bad when moved to the PC. Then it'll be upto Nvidia, Tridef and whoever else to generate a acceptable 3D output. (pretty much where we were before the PS4 event)

Errr, also in that article:
It's not a focus. But it does do it better. The basic capability is higher so more games will run at 1080p at 60 frames so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV.
So it DOES do 3D.

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views ... which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.
3D "not a focus" for marketing it appears. Makes sense to me. Most people don't have 3D TVs yet, nor are 3D TVs the fresh new thing on the market that manufacturers are hyping. 3D is just a thing that's there, and of course the PS4 supports it. Sounds good to me actually. And with better hardware, the Playstation now has a chance to do it decently.

We all knew 3d wasn't going to be the focus, but like ZlothX says, 3d is an option, and now that fullhd is going to be the norm, 720p 3d won't be so taxing so we could see it more, since it simply was too much for PS3 to handle, now less so. 3dtv sales are growing so maybe some developers will consider it more now.
Overall, the whole remark is rather optimistic: ""It's not a focus. But it does do it better. The basic capability is higher so more games will run at 1080p at 60 frames so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV."
I want to see the glass half full, besides, Guerrilla games just said about KZ Shadow Falls in 3d:
"We still like 3D"

So indeed there's a tiny bit of hope for 3d on consoles, hurray!

What we need is the "3ds" of consoles, or OSs on PC for that matter. One where 3D is always there and it's up to the user if they use it or not in a "3D" game. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Microsoft will do something like it, where it's just simply part of the underlying OS on the next console. They seem to be trying that with Windows 8 and DX 11.1 from what I've read.

There is a logic problem with consoles and 3d: the fixed hardware. If a gamedeveloper creates a game which is heavy already in 2d, it will probably be unplayable in 3d (unless using our all fave 2d-depth option...). Since there is a trend about being the worst with rendered graphics and that s-3d most often isn't priority i don't see consoles as something that will push 3d further. I would love to be wrong though.

This is why I find it harder to see the glass half full, but there is definitely hope there. Problem is, top games want to eek out as much performance out of the set hardware, like you say. Simply lowering the resolution of 3D will not make up for all those frames lost, and a lot of optimisations to max hardware seem to also include "faking" 3D effects on a 2D screen.
Anyway, I guess we all musn't forget that over 10,000 Oculus Rifts will be out in the wild soon. That has to be one of the LARGEST hardware Betas ever. If that many people are willing to try out a non commercial grade product with very low support in games, there really could be enough hardcore gamers out there to justify a small output of incredibly high def VR gaming.

As said earlier i will probably get a PS4 and thats only for their exclusives and the fact I like the controller :D
Annyway dont get your hopes up as the PS4 is really weak compared to a nice Pc and the devs will most likely use the little power there is for spicing up the graphics, of course it will probably get a game or 2 like fake 3d aka Crysis.
When PS3 and xbox 360 came out they was above or on par to high en Pc's but not this time as nvidia and crytek themself said, the Pc has evolve so fast thats it impossible to compete with what we have now or else the consoles would cost so much now one likes to buy it.
It has to be cheap and thats what we will get, a medium Pc that of course has no overhead as a standard Pc have and the best of all guys, you ALL KNOW IT ;)
As valve luuves VR im pretty sure they will embrace the Oculus Rift so no problem there.
Buy a PS4 if you would like for the exclusive games thou!

Nvidia said... lol.... doesn't mean too much considering they have been completely cut out of the loop this generation. ATI has crushed them on this deal, over the next 6-7 years maybe 140-150 million PS4's and Nextbox likely to be sold (judging by last sales)... Nvidia has every reason to dis the new consoles and make them out to be very weak. Ati has got a HUGE gaurenteed revenue stream, while Nvidia's market is of a ever quickly evaporating PC market. Why do you think ATI is not bringing out new cards this year? They don't need to, and are laughing all the way to the bank.
As for Crytek, as has been stated by another member, they are currently promoting for a current gen game. They are not going to criticise what they are doing now. Likewise I doubt you'll hear too much from Ken Levine right now about next gen consoles because of the imminent release of Biohock Infinite.
Also, I think Crytek is hoping to give a marketting wink to dumb *** PC gamers, that they still think PC is best (even though they have proved they really don't think that with linear closed levels needed for current console integration due to lack of ram).
You can't compare raw performance of the consoles, it will not bare a great reflection on what they can achieve. A lot of the extra bells and whistles of PC gaming come at extreme cost in FPS (MSAA etc). By removing all that and increasing looks via other less hard hitting methods will improve graphics by many orders of magnitude more then AA or depth of field effects. The games that will run on the PS4 at the end of it's life will look better than anything that is released now.
Proof? Look at current gen games on xbox, PS3, and go back to 2005 when x360 was released to see what PC games were around. By todays standards, even the X360's standard, they were pretty ugly. And it is not true that xbox 360 was above high end PC's of the day, my laptop was specced better then the xbox 360 at the time... ok, it did cost over £2k but still, that is by very definition a high end machine = expensive!
I personally wont buy one, as I like my mouse and keyboard, but I will not be surprised when new games coming out eat our graphics cards alive.
Because the PS4 or nextbox is more powerful then our PC's?
Not even close! But because their assets will be used as efficiently as possible, where as PC will get un-optimised console code to work over billions of different PC configurations. Go look at the "Samaritan demo" on gtx680 sli. It's not raw power that is holding graphics back!

@Foreverseeking..
Woow just woow man, do you sound like a console fanboy or what.
I know about how console works thank you but even the best optimization in the world cant change the fact that it is piss poor week!
You know the specs and how much it output so stops pretending it's the second coming.
It's not and ask any pc gamer who knows they can all atest that this time around it hant hold a candle as last gen was way better specwise compared to a Pc at the time.
This time it's all over and if you are such a ****** ATI Fanboy get the **** out of here and join the red team and stop trashtaling Nvidia.
You come off like a total turd mate and it's me remember who said I will probably get the Ps4 as I allways have get a new console but I know and understand what they can do and dont witch obviously you dont!

hehehehehe Not even Jesus Christ could save pcs. It is an inevitable fact, PC Gaming is destined to be just for MMOs Indies and not more than that.
The Pcs as a gaming platform, are relics of the past. What we will tell our grandchildren that we played them :).

@foreverseeking

So it DOES do 3D.
The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views ... which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.
