Nvidia 3D Vision And Movies
Can someone tell me what kind of difference can we expect if we use Nvidia 3D vision to see movies?

Will there be any big difference between watching movies with and without 3D vision?

I do know that Nvidia provide a software which converts games into 3D, but will Nvidia also provide a DVD player that will convert normal movies into 3D? Or we need to get 3D version of movies to watch with 3D vision?

AFAIK edimensional had a software that does (or did ?) that, but (as all similar ones I am aware of) they are not very good, in some scenes it is very enjoyable but in most of them, IMO it is not good, I mean that for example sometimes during a sequence the same object/person, etc can change quickly (as a flash) of depth. On other scenes where the depth should be great it is flat because there is not too much movement. And in others one single object has different depths because the software doesn't detect correctly the object/person's limits, or the contrary an object that has great perspective (it is in screen plane and reach the horizon of the scene), appears flat because the software is not aware of what it represents...

I think that these algorithmes are based on movement mainly, so there are movies that are better than others, but for me, in general, it is not very interesting.

Nevertheless I encourage you to try (trial) one of these softwares and see if you like it or if you have more luck than me, maybe these softwares have improved.

On the other hand, the movies already done for 3D are really different, but I have seen only a fews. Nonetheless, if they are designed minimaly well, they are really amusing. The problem could be that most of the movies might not be really good movies (3d aside), in that case even the 3D don't save a bad movie during much time :P . That depends on taste, though.

This is what I know, which is little and poor. Hope it helps, though.

For now and the foreseeable future, only movies specifically recorded for stereo 3d can be viewed with 3d Vision. The movie has to be specially encoded with alternate-frame sequencing in order to work with the 3d Vision glasses.

It's "easy" to convert 3d graphics such as in a video game into 3d because each pixel has a programmed coordinate that is known by the hardware & software and can thus be duplicated & manipulated to create the stereo effect. A recorded video, on the other hand, even one of 3d animation, has no such pixel-by-pixel coordinate details, thus can't be accurately converted to a stereo image. Personally, I believe that someday we'll see such video conversion technology, but not any time soon.

For now, we have to settle for the 3d movies nvidia provides and a handful of DVDs that are released with AFR versions of the movies.

I have the 3d movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth and it is pretty good in 3d. The weakest thing is just the format. DVD is not a good format for 3d movies because they interlace the 3d and that cuts your resolution in half. The movie is pretty darn good even so. If they release some 3d movies in the blu-ray format, that will be really good. For a movie, the quality can be really good if you get source material that is good. You can download 3d shorts and clips that are at very high res and you can see how really cool it is. This site has some 3d HD clips and even a free video player you can use to watch them. The player is also bundled with 3d vision, so you dont need another one.

These 3d videos are great, so there is excellent possibilities for 3d movies, just as soon as they start using bluray to distribute them. Its now up to the content makers to get stuff out to people.

What software player would we use to view 3d blu rays? I use power dvd 9 to view blu ray's currently, I do not think the current stereoscopic player would play blu rays.

Thank You everyone for your replies.

I do not have 3D vision at the moment but I thought that it will change the way of viewing movies, but I guess that is not true :(

There are very few movies that are released in 3D version. And I think many of them release in 3D after a long time after the normal DVD version is released.

Hey, I just hooked up my 3d vision and Samsung LCD screen just a few days ago and have been enjoying and experimenting with videos and stereoscopic player. The games are fabulous, besides the massive darkening of the glasses once in 3d mode. I've been screwing around with some videos aswell, was able to find Jouney to the Center of the earth in 3d online and play it in the stereo player.. but was wondering if its possible to increase depth with the videos as I can do with the games. I've messed around with separation of pixels in the video properties but that seems to only distort the video in 3d mode. I was also wondering if there is anyway to convert the youtube and online videos that are side by side or anaglyph into stereoscopic that could be viewed with the 3d shutter glasses... THanks

I don't think it would be possible to increase the depth since these videos are prerecorded for a certain depth in 3d movies. No depth coordinates present.

For the side by side on you tube you can just view it and play arroudn with the options in the 3d video player. there's a few to choose from.

For the Anaglyph I don't know of anyway to actually seperate the two images to play them using shutter glasses.

I use SUPER to convert videos: http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html
a 3D video will look like a side-by-side video when You play it with a standard player like Windows Media Player.

That is correct, 3D movies have hard coded depth.

I just got my 3D Vision 2 kit and a GTX660ti GPU + an ASUS 27" 144Hz monitor. I have all the latest drivers up to date and games look great. However when I use the Nvidia 3D Vision Video Player to watch an MP4 in 3D, I only get about 15 FPS and its un-watchable. The 3D effect is there but just really low frame rates. Is there a way to speed up the frame rates to make 1080P MP4 files such as The Dark Night Raises watchable?? Anyone experienced this problem?
That is correct, 3D movies have hard coded depth.
Not only that, but the convergence point for every element in the scene shrinks with the screen size change. Theater -> home ~55". Ouch. This is why im sure they will eventually film with two or more sets of cameras. Edit: old post, oops.
