Slight confusion... is the vesa cable required?
Hello,

So I want to take the leap into the 3D gaming scene and in preparation I picked up the 3D Glasses kit (with the little emitter pyramid)..

I was ready to get a monitor too when I noticed that there is a vesa cable / plug requirement from the emitter.. Is this required or is it an optional thing?

I have a nice monitor now that I know isn't compatible and wont work but its large (28") and I'd like to get a similarly sized monitor.. I went to the store and looked at all the 120hz monitors that claim to be 3D compliant and none of them had the vesa plug in the back..

So now I'm confused.. will any 3d 120 hz monitor work?

That 3 pin VESA is only needed for some older DLP HDTVs. Not any 3D 120Hz monitor will work, it needs to be Nvidia certified to work without any surprises.

Personally, if you can still return that 3D Vision kit, I would get this when its available later this month: http://promos.asus.com/us/VG278H/

It includes both emitter and glasses, and also satisfies the size range you are looking for. Its also the latest gen 3D Vision tech and will benefit from both 3D Vision 2 and LightBoost.

Thanks for the quick response.. I got the kit from nvidia's website.. how are they at taking returns? It's unboxed though I do have the box still..

Any idea how much that monitor from Asus will run?

MSRP on the Asus kit is $699 but I can see it going for a slight premium at places like Newegg for a few weeks judging by initial reaction and demand for stuff like this. Keep in mind though, it basically saves you the $150 you would spend on the 3D kit anyways, so its still a good deal imo, especially for someone who is looking to just get into 3D Vision.

I have no idea what Nvidia is like on returns, at worst you may have to pay shipping and perhaps restock fee, really don't know as I have never bought from Nvidia store directly. If they won't take it you can try Ebay but those kits weren't going for much more than $80 and will certainly drop further as soon as the V2 hit the market (soon). Hopefully Nvidia can help you out and take it back, just try and put everything back the way you found it.

Okay one final question then.. Can these glasses I have work with that new monitor? sort of as an extra set? I don't really want to have to do that but if I can't return them then there is at least that..

Yeah, you'll get lightboost too even with the old glasses, main differences are 20% larger on the new ones, and diff frame materials for a bit more comfort. Having the emitter handy isn't bad either if you get a 2nd display sometime down the road that doesn't have a built in emitter.
