I'd been thinking of getting a 3Dvision 2 monitor for awhile now, but I've just recently come to find out that TN panel monitors are the most hideously unviewable things ever, at least from what I've seen in stores (yeah, I've been out of the loop on monitors for a long time). I couldn't ever see myself using a monitor where I can't even get uniform brightness across the screen or barely be able to see it at all when slouching.
Are the 3Dvision 2 TN panels really THAT bad in viewing angle, or can they be drastically better than the cheap monitors I'm seeing in stores?
There is one 3D IPS monitor out there, VG23AH, but it doesn't support 3Dvision and it's passive so you have to sit far away. Errgh. Should I just give up on the idea of 3D monitors for now and get a 3DTV instead?

I'm using an Asus VG278H, and I'm very happy with it. Colour reproduction is reasonable (after some tweaking to lower the blue levels), and brightness is reasonably uniform - though there's definitely some backlight bleeding along the bottom edge. Honestly though, I can only see that when I go full screen on single colours with the lights off - when using it normally I can't notice any issues.
Viewing angle is pretty good too, especially from below, compared to other monitors I've used. TN panels are certainly the cheaper option when it comes to screen technology, but the VG278H is decent enough - and you won't regret the move to 3d gaming.

VG278H user. Yes TN isn't great. I've been photo editing on it before and get confused when theres a gradient on what should be a solid colour, then realise its the viewing angle.
That said, pretty much the best 3D monitor there is. Integrated emitter, nice size, very little ghosting etc. You can cut out most of the issues with a monitor by going with a DLP projector though, 0 ghosting on those according to users.

While IPS panels have better colors, they inherently have higher response times and slightly higher power usage.
The VG23AH is not the only passive IPS 3D monitor, LG has several.
Some of the 3D HDTVs use IPS panels as well.
Higher response times = more ghosting
Note that passive 3d monitors don't work with 3d vision without annoying workarounds. Best to check nVidia's official supported list before purchasing anything.

As a DLP projector user, I'd recommend going with a projector instead. Much, much larger screen, and zero ghosting. Brightness is generally not a problem, and viewing angles are good at all angles.
Resolution is 1280x720@120 Hz, which is on the edge, but I've never found resolution to be a problem because of the inherent doubling of pixels with 120Hz stereoscopic. Effective screen is 1280x2=2560x720 pixels. (your eyes see slightly different angles, and different pixels per frame, so the resolution is doubled. But only on one axis.)
Only drawback is takes some space. You can get short throw projectors for less space demand.
I've used 3D monitors as well, and in my judgment playing S3D with a 10' screen is the way to go.

Couldn't get rid of my VG278H fast enough. Just wasn't as good as using my 1st gen 3dtv that had loads of crosstalk and input lag and very low brightness levels. Mainly because of the field of view increase that could be had and also the enlarging effect the bigger display had on 3D imagery. If you can afford a newer 40"+ 3DTV, i'd recommend that or a projector. Just played through Skyrim with a 90 degree FOV using newer 2012 checkerboard 3D [Samsung or DLP tv only, i think], was very happy.

Thanks for pointing out the LG IPS monitors, may look into those if only to at least have a new monitor for 2D that can still do 3D if needed. VG278H seems to be the most popular 3D monitor, but I still don't know if I could tolerate TN.
I have tried out a 3D projector but wasn't too impressed with the colors/contrast (which may have been due to not having a proper projector screen, but that's another hassle and expense). I'm sure I'll get a 3DTV at some point but haven't looked into it much yet.

Yeah I have to say that saying the VG278H wasn't as good as a 1st gen TV with tons of ghosting is a little miss leading. I play in my study, and very close to my monitor. If you play in your lounge, or further away from your screen then sure, always get a TV or even better (for 3d) a projector. If you are looking for a monitor for your PC though (for work) that also does 3D, you can't do much better then the Asus. Nothing worse then having to physically move your head to look at another column on a spread sheet.
So assuming you're looking for a monitor:
Passive,in my opinion is disgusting for 3D. It is so grainy (caused by low resolution) and the ghosting has always been terrible. If you want to mostly work on photo's & video, get DLP and suffer poorer 3D. If you want the best 3D get a TN and suffer less vibrant and accurate colours. Unfortunately right now you have to compromise. Good luck in your purchase!

Be sure to look at one properly calibrated in 3D. Just like if you go to Best Buy, the TVs will always be maladjusted.
I use mine on a plain white wall, and have decent color, contrast, brighness.

Oh damn, I didn't even think about that. I had noticed the projector switched to YCbCr mode when playing blu-rays and the colors looked drastically better than otherwise. I think PS3 can only use that mode for blu-ray and nothing else though. But if my graphics card can do that it may be worth another shot.

another thing to watch out for with displays, is if you are sending full or limited RGB

I used a Dell IPS panel for years before I switched to gaming on my Samsung 52" LCD, then after 3 years I switched to gaming in 3D on the Asus VG278H, and I have zero problems with the Asus. I only use my PC for 3D gaming, browsing some gaming sites, and playing the odd unplayable 3D game in 2D.
TN panels can look poor when you are used to an IPS, however after trying out my friends Dell 1440 27" 60hz IPS I wasn't really impressed by the difference in quality - I still prefer my Asus screen for the higher refresh rate and OFC playing in 3D.
My same friend also tried out a cheap passive 3D monitor after having a go on my setup, and he hated it.
