I am trying to set up a sharp LL-151d lcd monitor with an nvidia geforce 7900 gtx. Unfortuately, I am not able to get the 3D capabilities of the monitor to work. You need to set "stereo" option to 5, I juess (I don't know your monitor type).

Are you try to see stereo image with any 3d-app? Nvidia linux driver cannot 'force' such applications to get him to the stereo mode. You need special 3d-stereo apps, that was developed specially for stereo. They use quadbuffered opengl. Besides, it need to configure your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. By the way, what videocard do you have? The only way to get stereo on Linux is to use Nvidia Quadro series.

there are various programs im trying to get the stereo graphics to work with some crystalography graphics programs, one of them being PyMol. The programs have 3D stereo capability.
I don't know what video card is inside the case because it is locked, but the system settings tells me that it is a GeForce 7900 GTX. I don't know if that is set correctly because I wasn't here when they installed it. Assuming that is the video card inside the computer, I suppose that I won't be able to get the stereo to work on linux.

Hey I think the issue is that Only Quadro Drivers will support Quad Buffered OpenGL. Most open source applications that have stereo built in make use of Quad Buffered OpenGL. Unfotunately no Geforce Cards natively support Quad Buffered OpenGL. Geforce 6800 Ultra based on the NV40a (not sure of chipset) chipset was I believe the last geforce that could be tricked into thinking it was a Quadro 4400 (not sure of exact model). You will need a quadro or one of the later FireGL cards from AMD/ATI if you wish to have support for quad buffered opengl.
If you are happy to use Windows and an older geforce card. I believe there are modified drivers and tricks you can do to get quad buffered opengl. Similarly using RivaTuner and some of the latest scripts you can trick 1950 ATI cards into thinking they are FireGL's. There are some programs that use quadbuffering (PyMol on linux or Morph on Windows). It is the 'right' stereo. There is no need in spesial stereodriver here. You must install just videodriver.
Windows has another, 'cheap' stereo approach too. It allow you to see any 3d openGL or directX application on GeForce series. It requare additional stereodriver. Not all appications work good here and it requare more resouces than 'right' stereo.
