Alright so I've done a lot of searching trying to find the new way of doing this.
In NVidia stereoscopic 3D setup, you used to be able to pick discover glasses, then change from red / blue, to the dark tinted ones you find in the movie theater (what I did on my 2nd previous NVidia card).
Then they changed it so you had to pick 3d glasses with IR hub, and just not use an IR hub.
Apparently NVidia stopped you from being able to do that too. There is some kind of work around that emulates the IR emitter so that you can get away without having one once again, but then NVidia stopped that from working too...
Why they would go to such lengths I have no idea.
So my question is what is the current way to use plain old dark tinted 3D glasses like I used to with my NVidia card?
If the only way to get 3D in my games, which I have had for free for the past 15+ years is to force me to go out and buy specialized 3D equipment, I will, it's called an ATI card that lets you use the RealD 3D glasses.

Real D glasses require that you have a passive 3D monitor, do you have one?
If it's a Zalman, Iz3D is free. But it's also no longer updated.
What OS are you using? If Vista, it's no longer supported.
Also support was dropped for some of the older GPUs as well.
Yeah, my monitor is a passive 3D monitor, I've tried Iz3D (what I used back with Windows XP), and also TriDef 3D trial. Neither one seem to work as the driver fails to initialize for the settings that enable the RealD 3D glasses.
Using Win7 64bit
I tried updating my monitor drivers to the required ones, but they didn't seem to have the correct native resolution, and everything went super wonky when enabling 3D, and then eventually black and white...
I'll try finding the correct drivers for my monitor and see if that helps.
Thanks!
(changing your monitor driver affects a lot more than just your display. I wish there was another way to do it)
Why they would go to such lengths I have no idea.
Hmm, maybe it's their product and people were effectively stealing it ...
Just to clarify RealD 3D glasses are the glasses you get at the movie theater
@TsaebehT I used to use RealD 3D glasses with this exact same video card and exact same monitor. Updating my drivers doesn't mean I'm trying to steal something that used to be included with the software in the past. That's like saying sharing your lunch is piracy.
@zig11727 ATI cards are supported by both iZ3D and Tridef3D (third party software)
To use your standard run of the mill 3D glasses in:
iZ3D
(ATI) Select ATI 3D DLP -> Checkerboard
(NVidia) Select 3D DLP -> Checkerboard *doesn't work anymore for whatever reason*
Tridef3D
(ATI + NVidia) Select Advanced -> (standard display types) -> Direct3D Stereo *NVidia now fails to initialize the driver for what ever reason*
I'm sure that NVidias 3D suite of products in conjunction with 3D displays offer much better 3D experiences and performance, but I don't like having something that used to be included stripped away (or made hard to access) in an effort to get people buy **** they don't need. My point was if you are going to force people to go out and spend another $200 on a 3D kit, why wouldn't they get a $200 video cared upgrade that can do what the 3D kit (probably not as well mind you) does with a $10 pair of glasses.
I apologize for being salty, but I have been dicking around for 3 days trying to flip on a switch in the software that I used to be able to do in less than 5 minutes and less than 5 clicks
Anyways back to the point. Who knows how to turn the checkerboard 3D back on with NVidia?

It may help if we knew a little more about what you're working with.. ie: monitor make/model#, OS, drivers used/tried, and GPU.

Yes I have the Nvidia 3DTV Play software? (14 day trial), and it didn't open up any new options.
I'll humor you with my specs.
GPU: GTX550Ti
Monitor1: acer x223w
Monitor2: acer AL1916W
OS: Windows 7 64bit
The reason I said my monitor is a passive 3D monitor, is because it is, all monitors that are not active 3d monitors are passive 3D ones, and the actives can be set to be passive. NVidia, however only recognizes certain vendors and models in their software.
My monitor can do it, it did it 2 years ago with the same graphics card.
You either know how do enable them the way it used to be, or you don't...

As far as I can see neither of those monitors are passive/polarized 3D ... there's no way those glasses ever really worked with them, even on Legacy Drivers ... I needed active 3D glasses to play on a CRT.

not sure if this is what you are talking about. I have a LG 32" 3D TV. What I do is use "Acer HR274H 3D Monitor EDID Override" inf. You have to press F8 and disable the driver thing to install this. Then nvidia sees the TV as 3D and it works great.
I got them from http://3dvision-blog.com/
but if you cant find them.. just PM me your email and I will send them.. I downloaded "Zalman 3D Monitor EDID Override" also. I think Acer you can use HDMI sound and the other you cant.. not sure.. I just know ACER works great. Tried it on a 32" LG and a 27" lg 3D.
EDIT:.. duh both were PASSIVE so..

I use the RealD 3D glasses with my Zalman passiv 3D Monitor.
3D Vision: Zalman Mode
3DTVPlay: not supported
Tridef: Line interleave
iZ3D: Line interleave
What kind of passiv Monitor do you have? Line interleave or checkerboard?

Ok; then go back, install XP and use the red+blue/green glasses that came from a crackerjack box.
Your monitor is NOT "passive 3D" and will NOT support Real-D.
