The issue of the monitor remaining in 3D-mode (just the monitor, not the glasses) after exiting games in my experience depends on the game. With some it happens, not with others. So I conclude it's not specific for my monitor (added to signature) or graphics card.

For me it is not an acceptable workaround to close/open the web browser every time I run a game, because that's much more time-consuming than "resetting" the driver in the control panel (for example by changing refresh-rate). Obviously NVIDIA should get rid of those annoying bugs as soon as possible. (And I wonder how it could NOT have been possible already...)

Here's probably the best concise explanation of what's happening when the brightness stays on:

this happens to all 3d vision ready displays with a brightness handshake through DVI
all in all, if a game doesnt perfectly destroy the d3d device and unload d3d, the brightness will stay
what i do is, i just run the spinning nvidia logo test, as that unloads perfectly, so after you exit it, your brightness will return back to 2d mode

Its not really a bug on Nvidia's side, although they could/should probably implement an easier way to manually kill brightness if the user chooses to do so. The workaround for opening/closing a browser is similar to rajkoderp's suggestion to open the logo test, it redundantly turns 3D Vision on even if the monitor already thinks its on, then unloads it properly to turn 3D Vision brightness off. Similarly, I think people are having problems sometimes because they leave browsers or apps with Flash embedded open, which tells your monitor to keep brightness max when they don't want or expect max brightness.

I get the "monitor stuck in 3D mode" thing as well pretty often. And, just now launched Dead Island with 3D disabled in the Nvidia CP and monitor turned to 3D mode by itself. Had to close to game to get the 3D mode off again. The biggest issue for me is the fact that 3D mode settings don't stick. I have to manually set the depth and convergence every time I launch a game. Which, as you can probably understand, is somewhat of a hassle so I went back to my old drivers.

Have you tried using Ctrl-F7 to save your 3D Vision settings? This requires you to enable the advanced config settings in 3D Vision, which you already have if you are messing with Convergence. Unfortunately the saved settings don't override the Depth settings which are still global, but it will definitely save your Convergence settings. If you just remember what your depth is for that game, this can save you at least some config time.

Probably you know more about these things than me - which isn't hard to achieve. But I'm still wondering how it is possible that so many games don't "perfectly destroy the d3d device and unload d3d" (if that really is the cause). In my list it's by now about 50% of all games! Including for example "The Witcher 2", a recent title that generally performs really good in 3D - at last...

As said before, in order to "reset" the brightness I prefer to change refresh rate in control panel. A special "kill 3D" switch could be helpful - but only if it wouldn't require to answer "yes" in a confirmation dialog (unlike when refresh-rate is changed..).

About leaving browsers open: This probably causes this, but who closes such essential programs these days /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> I leave a lot of them running myself, and with windows 8 you're not even supposed to close them anymore just like on current mobile phones.

Yep, saved every time when I get a good setting. However, convergence is not saved when I launch the game again. After going back to older drivers, everything is saved.

Not that anyone from Nvidia is reading this, but now I'm having problems with the 3D photo viewer that seemed to be fixed with this driver at first. When I first installed the driver, I was happy to see that you can now view screenshots in 3d while in windowed mode. earlier this week I had to reinstall windows due to a different problem, and now after reinstalling this beta driver, the photo viewer will no longer show stereo images in windowed mode, only fullscreen - which is exactly the way it behaved before they said they fixed it.

Other than that I'm having no problems with this driver.
