Has anyone tried the Vireio Perception stereoscopic gaming middleware?
I know bo3b tried it with the Oculus Rift as well as a few others. But is anyone currently using it? Is it worth trying out with the games it works with? I know they are looking for people to help develop it, so if interested, check it out. I posted this a few days ago in another thread. [quote="D-Man11"]Cyberreality is working on a stereoscopic open source middleware for gaming. He was a 3D Vision user then switched to AMD, I don't think 3D Vision support is offered. More people joined the group to help write it. I'm not sure how far it's progressed or how well it works, it has it's own sub forum and wiki over at Meant To Be Seen. One guy left the group and is doing his own thing. I only learned of it a few weeks ago, while catching up on past 3D Vision Blog articles. Its not currently working. Im just saying that before anyone tries it. Even prior it didnt really do a great job, I really disagree the hyping prior to getting games to work. Don't get me wrong a lot of work was put into it and maybe down the line games will be playable. But so many people were made to believe so many games were supported well and this is going to cause a lot of problems when people go to try out these games. I don't blame Cyberreality, just someone else. The person who seemed to be most actively working on it who had a falling out[stereoificator] seems to be doing well though. MTBS honestly seems to have a lot of drama. [Not going into details and its not just one occurence] Cyberrealitity used 3d vision + tridef so either two computers or nvidia. Just wanted to point out. Im also not certain but Im pretty sure he stopped working on his driver, or at least not actively since he started working for OR [no idea what actual company is called.] Its "open-source" now.

Bummer, I'm glad I checked. It's too bad that iz3d didn't get released as open source. Their price tag of 800K to do so was rather high.

By chance I just looked at the current state of Vireio yesterday. The only version that is actually functional is the old one, 1.1. It works in some games, including Black Mesa, which is what I was looking at. The new version that Chris Drain/stereoificator has been working upon is currently broken and unusable. The main reason they switched though was because the old 1.1 version doesn't render both eyes at once, it alternates. That doesn't sound too bad, because 3D Vision does that too. Except that 3D Vision requires 120Hz, and Virieo uses 60Hz by default. That means you are getting 30fps for each eye, which is not a compelling experience. Virieo does not support frame sequential. It does support sbs and over/under and checkerboard and assorted anaglyph. Is it worth a try? I'd say definitely yes. The Black Mesa experience in Rift was surprisingly good. If you have a SBS or supported display, I think it's definitely worth trying a couple of their supported games. The 1.1 version is a lot better than the 1.04 version I used before. When you change the separation it works at a reasonable speed and is effective. In Black Mesa, riding in the tram car, I played with separation, and it was a real trip to feel like I was getting smaller in the car, or taller in the car. I tried convergence, but could see no effect. The SHOCT tool that they talk about does not seem very good to me, and the instructions are barely comprehensible. I skipped it for Black Mesa and just entered my IPD into the xml file. I agree with eqzitara's assessment. For some reason MTBS seems to always have drama. I found some myself when asking some polite questions about the Sleeping Dogs review. VorpX is another driver that will someday work on Rift, and probably not on regular 3D setups. VorpX was another high drama exit from MTBS. CyberReality did take a job with Oculus, and no longer does development on the Vireio driver. He did however do the integration of Chris's new simultaneous code back to the mainline of the project. Virieo has a lot of potential, and being open source will be dramatically superior to what we have now. It's going to take awhile though, maybe as long as a year, before it can rival 3D Vision. And that's assuming they don't have other drama.

I thought Black Mesa was Vaporware, somehow I overlooked that it was released. I'll have to give it a go soon and maybe try out Vireio.

Kinda makes you wish '3D Vision' would go open source, doesn't it? At least then someone could work on it.
