So what is the deal with Nvidea Vision Surround Technology? When is it coming out etc?

The idea of 3 monitors around you sounds so dang cool. Can I go out and expand my one monitor 3d experience i have currently to 3? Or, as I think the website states, do I need to wait until summer?

If you're really impatient and have 32-bit Vista or Win 7 you can use 256.76. Personally, I'd wait for the official beta release, as 256.76 are not meant for public consumption. Yes, thee-displays is cool, I've been doing that since 2007. I've been using 3 projectors a year now, which is even more cool. Previously, I had to do this stuff using a Matrox TH2G box or SoftTH. Now I just use 256.76. /shock.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

What annoys me about it is I'm a 100% nVidia user and always have been. nVidia had the surround-game market cornered since 2007 with the use of the Matrox TH2G. It took a swift kick to the head by AMD/ATI october of last year before nVidia realized there was money to be had in the surround-gaming marketplace. By then, it was too late for nVidia to make a proactive move. It's all been clean-up and reactionary to ATI since then. Really disappointing to me as someone who watched nVidia dominate the market without even knowing the market existed for years. nvidia couldn't see the forest through the trees until it was too late and they got out-maneuvered. I'm hoping Mr. Fear gets his division's act together in short order. Just my typical 2 cents.

1-what will the difference be from using 256.76 compared to official beta? Is quality going to be that much worse?

2- I didn't know ati even HAS 3d tech. They are that much ahead of nvidea? I don't even see ati 3d ready stickers anywhere

Apparently 256.76 was not supposed to be released, so it's not a public beta. It's a build that isn't fully optimized.

I'm not talking about the 3D aspect of the driver, but the surround aspect. This is something that further muddles up the process, nVidia has glued 2 totally separate technologies together at the hip that need not be -- 3D and Surround. I suppose this was done because both 3D and surround require a lot of driver programming to get working and the 3D Vision side of things has the capability to get it done. Otherwise it makes no sense to refer to these technologies in the same sentence. nVidia Surround and nVidia 3D Vision are 2 different things, but the way nVidia is marking it is confusing at best.

AMD/ATI leverages 3rd party drivers for 3D using iZ3D and DDD TriDef. Personally, I prefer nVidia's free fully integrated way of doing it.

Ok honestly, I don't really even grasp what you are saying. 3d vision will be in a surround setting right? How and when can i get it?

Also, won't the corner black areas of the "connected" monitors make for an interrupted view that has these weird black lines very visible in the areas where the side monitors connect to the main center one?

Thanks!

Yes, nVidia 3D Vision and nVidia Surround will be able to be used together at the same time, or separately depending upon your needs. 3d Vision has it's own menu while Surround is enabled and disabled through the SLI/PhysX menu. As far as I know there is no firm release date for 3D Vision Surround. If I had to guess, the public beta driver will be out in a month or so. 256.76 works but it's not optimized yet. Again, this is just my random guess on release, take it with a grain of salt.

By black areas, you mean the bezel frames of the display? The nVidia Surround setup wizard gives you ability to do bezel adjustment, so that is not as noticeable. It's looks just like looking through a window after adjustment. you have the bezels there but what is displayed on the screens looks correct.

My personal experience is that how much they're noticed varies with each person. I started surround-gaming on 17" LCDs with a Matrox TH2G box back in 2007. Even on screens that small I would get so much into the game that the bezels were tuned out for the most part. Other people swear that bezels are the most annoying things ever. It varies depending on the person. I shifted to using projectors a year ago, so bezels are a long gone issue for me though. I only have to worry about edge blending between the projectors and pre-warping the image with 3rd party utilities now.

Hmmmm. Projectors sounds tempting. Is 3d as good quality in projectors compared to traditional monitors? It probably doesn't look as crisp right? Not having bezel frames sounds great! I recently rented out my 2500 sf house and moved to the beach. My current place is a small 2 bedroom house. Could I use projectors well like you are descibing with 3 displays (maybe one for now in 3d but 3 total in surround 3d When the drivers come out) in a standard 10x10 room? Or do I need a huge living room type setting? I don't know much about projectors so thanks for the help so far with all of this :)

What programs are you using for edge blending? If you wana do a curved screen I can send you a pdf...

Also someone should try the Sony shutters with 3d vision , you might need to use additional polarizer foils tho.

I use Sol7 Pro for edge blending. I already use a curved screen. 13x6.5 deep perfect half circle with 3 short-throw projectors. My main priority is Surround. Using 3D Vision is just an incidental diversion at times for me. I use red-blue anaglyph snap-on glasses with my regular prescriptions.

Q How do you set up a 3-way projector stand? Just the Idea gives me headaces. I was going crazy over setting up 1 beamer in my room, now 3? What do you place the projectos on to make it work, and is it a steady solution ?

I seriously felt like a kid at Christmas on May 24th, but I went out to my stocking and it was an IOU that said I have to wait 5 more weeks for my stocking stuffers(maybe more). Early in May it was stated on these forums the 256 driver would be out on May 24th. People like me who did the research on the 3d surround technology were looking for the 256 drivers for the sole fact they would support 3d surround. Instead we got a minor performance boost and blueray 3d capability. The person stating the 256 drivers would be coming out didn't mention the fact that the main functionality (3d surround) would not be included in this release. People like me that saw "3d Surround" on the drivers and the video card packaging and the website went out and did the research and were going to do what it took to see this technology in their home. The 3d Surround advertising on the nVidia website that was once prominent on the main nVidia 3d Vision page has now been buried and can only be accessed by specifically searching for it (shady to say the least). I am thinking this hiding of the web page is a last ditch effort to try and quell some of the uproar from people like me, but it is only yet another slap to the face. I am STILL waiting for the REAL 256 drivers! I am a true nVidia fan, so I wish they would quit being shady like this. The forums said we will be getting the real 256 driver at the end of June, but I wouldn't be suprized if this is hogwash, especially with the burying of the 3d Surround info on the website. The advertisers were way ahead of the programmers on this one. And what does it matter? They still make money, who cares if they piss a few thousand people off? Ok, done venting, I am going to go enjoy my one 3d monitor between my two un-powered ones.

Nice setup. I've mostly been using Sol7 Pro lately, but I also have NTHUSIM. My triple projector setup is pretty much the same setup. My ceiling mount of the projectors has minor difference but the circular projection screen looks about the same size.

About setting them up. It's why NTHUSIM and Sol7 Pro exist as a utility. You just get the beamers shooting in the proper area with about 2-3% overlap and use the utility to fine tune the three projection areas to be a perfect semi-circle. It's pre-warping software that tweaks everything. Think of it as very advanced keystoning that can warp the picture into about anything you want it to do.

Here are a few old pics that kind of give an example of just what I mean.
I can understand that viewpoint, but imho I'd rather have a late driver that is functional than nVidia shoveling crap out the door at us to placate people. The quality of the driver is more important to me than the release date. Then again, I have a Matrox TH2G I can revert back to if needed and stereo 3D isn't my interest in the driver, while surround is.We come at it from different perspectives and wants/needs.
