Evochron Mercenary: awesome in 3D

I'll have to try the demo out when I get a chance, the first video I saw had me until I saw the Mechs on the planet ... they just looked silly, the second video I saw was the one on their website, which is mainly outer space stuff, and that one looked great. I've always liked space games like these, dog fights in space, and have always hated that you couldn't at least go down to the surface of the planets in them.

From what I understand, the mecs are more for utility than combat as they are used for mining. I completely agree with you with regard to flying to and landing on planets. David Braben is remaking Elite. I am really worried he will make another X style game trying to remake Elite rather than Elite: Frontier or First Encounters. I have looked (fairly) closely for Braben to make mention of planetary mining but cant find any. :( Elite/X4 vs EM; kind of reminds me of Diablo 3 vs Torchlight 2 I am aware I am gushing a bit too much about EM but it ticks many of my boxes. You can fly/fight anywhere. You can build a variety of stations (more X2 than X3 though). You can buy and upgrade new ships. 4X. And it looks brilliant in 3D too!

Kol's tip number one : Don't jump directly to the asteriod fields, explosive decompression may occur.

I can't play the game in 3D (no green light on emitter). Some people in this thread said that it helps to turn on AA from off to 2x. Where do I have to turn the AA on? In Nvidia-driver (new profile) or in sw.cfg as there is no ingame-setting for AA? If it has to be set in sw.cfg: which line is it and how has it to be entered ("2x" or "2")? Thanx in advance...
There is an in game AA toggle in the settings menu.
Where? I can't find AA toggle in the in game settings. Would like to insert a screenshot of my settings I took with FRAPS, so that you can see there is no AA toggle-option but don't know how to do so... Could you please insert a screenshot of your settings or explain me how I can insert a screenshot? At least I can write what I see: GAME OPTIONS: Video/Effects: Resolution: 1920X1080 (in red color!?) Font Mode: Standard Background Nebula: on Star Detail: high 3D Cockpit: high Shaders: high Graphics Detail: high Planet Detail: Ultra Screen Mode: Locked (FS) (in red color!?) That's it! @3D_Mike, I believe you have an older version of the game. (my legacy copy has those options) Make sure to get the latest version at http://www.starwraith.com/index.htm The red text just means "not recommended" but you can still select those options. In the sw.cfg file it should be 2X on the 3rd line (capital X, the resolution needs to be cap X as well like 1920X1080) Hope that works for you.

That's a weird one. Are you trying the demo? At first mine didn't work in 3D but now it happily works on amy setting! Try changing the screen modes FS and WM (windowed). Have you Ctrl + T to switch on 3D? Once it works make sure you increase depth to max and then reduce convergence until the two compasses look like holograms just sitting above their console. :) I have edited some HUD elements and will remove the artificial horizon, which I'll share, then the game will pretty much be more 3D ready than 3D ready games!

I really love the way the relative position/heading sphere in 3D gives it about 10x more context that in 2D. It really is an entirely accidentally awesome 3D experience. I personally like the HUD in mode 2, I'm an information nazi.

Heh! I like that HUD too. A 3D compass sort of needs to be 3D to be effective doesn't it! :D I love the sense of scale in this game. I think because the planets are 'real' they genuinely appear to loom(?) behind space stations etc. Brilliant!

Awesome! Thanks to EM's dev's hard work and patience I have edited/removed some textures to make it (I think) pretty much spot on in 3D. http://speedy.sh/knpW3/Evochron-Mecenary-3D-Vision-TweaksV2.rar I have removed the target boxes so only the info text remains below (you can still see all the targets but they are not obscured by the doubling boxes anymore); I have increased the size of some of the target circles because they were too small where they were rendered. I have also removed the artifical horizon because it was too close as well as the target shield indicators both of these have info elsewhere so are redundent. If you want the Artificial Horizon back, simply delete the HUD tape and HUDtapshadow files and remove the text file for the shield indicators. :) To install, just dump the HUD folder and the text file into the folder where your EM exe is. Screenies here: http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/andysonofbob/album/515f3b0e5ec346f3410000b3/ FYI: I have used the textures from Viper's Silicum HUD pack. I hope this person doesn't mind!

Awesome stuff andy, I shall check it oot later today! And yes the size of the game is impressive, I seriously get a bit nervous descending through the cloud layer landing on planets, the first time on sapphire I was thinking is this pea soup gonna end? is it a cloud bank over a fog bank? What if it's a cloud bank over a fog bank over the ocean? Can I swim? Kol's tip #2. Move well away from planets before engaging the jump drive. Space is big, but because of Murphy 9 times out of 10 you'll jump straight back the way you came and suffer for extreme ship disintergration. There's a lot of ways jumping without thinking can be fatal in this game. Like docking at a station and a naval destroyer jumps in right in front of you when you're travelling at 5X max speed.

I have edited the tweak ever so slightly. Two versions: My basic tweaks for vanilla cockpit and HUD style etc. http://speedy.sh/3B8tu/Evochron-Mercenary-3D-Vision.rar RECOMMENDED: As above, using MAX's cockpit and lots of Viper's HUD - this sleak cockpit has matt display consoles which make it easier to see the target ship details in 3D. I seriously recommend this one. http://speedy.sh/2sUFY/Evochron-Mecenary-3D-Vision-with-cockpit.rar @Kol Showing off outside the stations? You gotta be careful!!! Heh! I like jumping whilst still *in* the spacestations. I think it's rude. Also saves time. ;D
