Batman: Arkham City in 3D Vision

Tomas,

As Joohan said, stereo 3D creates its own anti-aliasing effect. The image sharpness is enhanced by having the two images converge. While AA does help the quality some, it is much less of a factor than if you were playing in 2D. In Batman AC, for example, I play using FXAA, which is almost no performance hit. I've ran the benchmark using several AA settings and found very little discernable quality difference from one setting to the other (in 3D). The fps was impacted slightly each time the AA level was increased. So in performance versus quality, AA is not an issue. For comparisons sake, I sit away from my monitor about 1 meter as well.

As for the quality of the monitor, I can't tell you what to expect because I don't have one of those. I DO have the ASUS 23" monitor, which looks identical to the 27" minus the lightboost technology. The 23" has been a fantastic monitor, and even using it in 2D (most of the time) the colors are better reproduced than on my LG monitor sitting next to it. I wouldn't hesitate for a second on buying another ASUS monitor based on my current experience.

As you are aware though, native resolution is low compared to most regular LCD monitors. It's one of those things that you can see that yes, there is a difference, but does the image look bad? NO. My LG monitor runs at 1900X1400, but I would still pick the ASUS as being better overall image quality. It's brighter and has better color tone. And that's saying something, because my LG is a good monitor as well!

Hi Tomas,

We have a very similar system. My 570sli is almost identical in performance to the 590, and I'm also 6gb tripple chan ram. I've played through Batman AC in DX11 extreme settings, Tess high, FXAA, and I get pretty good performance in 3d. Sure, it's not 60fps the entire time, but it's far from unplayable. Believe me, once you see the true 3d, you'll facepalm and wonder to yourself, "How did I miss out on this for so long?". 3d is the next step, and the single most impressive graphics boost in gaming. Just go for it man!

Loving this game. It 'feels' great to play.

People said DX11 makes little difference to the visuals and TBH they're right; I am certainly not missing it anyway. Also I am playing without PhysX and I am not missing that either! Batman's cape and all the hanging drapes around AC still flow nicely and the pretty solid 60FPS I am getting on my rig, on the highest settings (bar what I have mentioned), at pretty much all of the time is well worth the lack of debris, which may not be there anyway.

I had to look quite hard to spot the difference with DX 11. I guess the gargoyles and giant plants are lumpier. I couldnt tell that much apart. With ambient occlusion on anyway I couldn't make out too much difference with the lighting and shadows.

If I had a more powerful rig I would turn on the PhysX as it you can see it and it probably is worth some performance decrease. But DX11? I just don't see the point.

First post here. Will try to make it as clear as possible.

I just purchased a GTX 680 the other day. VERY happy with this card. It is an absolute beast. Also picked up 3DTV Play for my desktop. I have a 46" Samsung 3D LED TV. I've downloaded the latest drivers for the 680. (that came out today)

Everything is up and working fine, except for one thing.

I cannot for the life of me get Arkham City to run in 3D. I've tried most everything. Stereo 3D is enabled. And it shows in the settings of Arkham City, 3D is enabled. All other 3D games work no problem.

What is strange about Arkham City, is when it launches it says on the TV that 3D picture is enabled, and the glasses go on like I'm viewing a 3D image, but it literally is not there. The info bar doesn't pop up, and none of the 3D controls are reacting as they should. Can't change depth, can't activate it, nothing.

I've tried messing around with various settings, and nothing seems to work. Any idea on this? I'm thinking it might be the drivers. I can revert and try, but figured I'd ask first.

Also, I should state I CAN run it in 3D off 3DTV Play on my laptop, but it barely chugs along and is unplayable. So I find it very strange I can't do it on the desktop. It's almost the same setup, minus the drivers and the video card.

Anyone got insight? Thanks. Hope I was clear enough.

Have you tried 'hiding 3D' in the stereoscopic menu? Sometimes that works for games with built in 3D support. Toggling the 3D off and on sometimes kicks it in. I don't think I needed to do that though.

Good luck

Strangely, that option of hiding 3D isn't there. It doesn't pop on the desktop (the machine I am having the issue with). I know exactly what you're talking about though. I have seen the option on the laptop. Also I can't physically toggle it ( I have it set to Ctrl+T) the 3D controls do absolutely nothing in the game. Not even the info prompt most games get upon start up.

I'm one that does notice a difference between DX11 and DX9. In fact there is a very noticable difference in the way far off objects look. DX11 looks more realistic and immersive - I can't put my finger on what effect it is exactly, but there just seems to be more "substance" to the air between near and distant scenery. The buildings look more like real buildings as opposed to cardboard models of buildings. That's the only way I know how to describe it. But basically I hadn't played the game in a couple months, but started again with the new DLC. I messed around with settings again, switching between DX modes, and it's not my imagination, DX11 is noticably different.

Your probably right. I didn't spend too long looking at DX11 in B:AC tbh. I know what you mean about DX11.

When you play spot the difference between DX10 and DX11 screenshots, the differences are subtle. They must add up when you take in the scenes as a whole because DX11 does look better.

I played Max Payne 3 in DX11 and DX9 and noticed quite a difference which I just couldn't place my finger on. But I have chosen to play MP3 in DX11 @ 800 instead of DX10.1 @ 1050 because it looks better!

I'm playing B:AC for the first time on my new GTX 690. I gotta say... and maybe it is a placebo effect... but DX11 really *does* look noticeably better to me. Looks gorgeous in 3D.

I'd like to play in 3DSurround..... but the hud elements on the outside monitors is just too annoying to me. I can't keep an eye on when I should do combo moves.
