Nvidia you lost out on a sale from me.... well a single product. Because of no TRI-SLI or QUAD SLI.
Well these may seem like a rant but its not,

I've had 3X GTX 280's since their release and bought 3-way SLI as an enthusiast which I still am.

I have them watercooled and love the performance from them.

But because of the very shoddy optimization of 3-way SLI in new games and of course 3D Vision I think users with QUAD SLI and 3-way SLI should give up and getting more for no reason.

Personally I dont see much of a difference in fact I get glitches when 3-way SLI is enabled. I tested with SLI and I get more FPS 2-5 fps more in SLI than 3-way SLI.
(I physically took out one card to try this)

Other than that You guys did lose out on me buying 3X GTX 480's or 470s and instead will be getting 2.

I know not loosing out much but still if the support was there, I'm pretty sure you guys would have gotten alot more sales from us. When GTX 495 comes out and theres no QUAD SLI i'm sure the same will be then.

Usually if your FPS gains from removing a card, more then likely your CPU is bottlenecking 3-way SLI.
You may get better FPS with only 1 card. Depends on the CPU and Clock Spped.

However, by using 3-way SLI, the 3rd card can be used as SLI32xAA, without compromising the FPS.
The key to SLI systems is to balance each peice of hardware, or rather have the GPU/s be the weakest link in order for them to shine.
and I dont mean use weak GPUs just make the other components more powerful then the GPU/s

Post your system specs, and some benchmarks of this issue, I'll bet alot of people here can give you some pointers.

Nope thats not it because running 3-way SLI when 3d Vision iss off boosts my FPS to about 90-120. Also I've been using this rig for over a year and a half.

i7 965 EE @ 4.0 GHZ and 6 GB DDR3 RAM- 1866.

Its only when 3D Vision is on do I loose frames vs SLI. Because SLI works perfectly with 3D Visoin but TRI and QUAD Sli do not.

as i believed it even with only 2x cards you would lose fps because 3d can only go to 60fps? could be wrong if so im sure some one will correct me.

Sorry, I guess I did'nt read through well enough.
It does indeed sound like a glitch.
