3D Vision Surround @ 2160 x 1280 using Acer H5360 x 3 in portrait. Any experiences?

Little know fact - we do support 3D Vision Surround portait mode with projectors. It is documented on our website http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dv-system-requirements-surround-technology.html

In practice though its a real pain in the butt to align the projectors to be seamless. Ive done it at 3 tradeshows and its a challenge.

I am not aware of air flow problems since you space out the projectors a few feet a part, you dont stack them on top of each other.

Quick question...
According to that surround requirements page the max resolution for projectors set up in portrait mode is 2160x1280 (720x1280 per projector). However there are 3D supported projectors which do 1280x800. This Viewsonic for example - http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-PJD6531w-Projector--120Hz-Lumens/dp/B0033PRQE2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299971042&sr=8-1

3 of those would give a native resolution of 2400x1280 which would look better and is closer to the 16x9 aspect ratio anyways. Would 3D surround work in that res. I don't see why not...but you never know.

Has anyone taken the plunge and got this up and running? I am very intrigued by running them in Portrait vs Landscape and if actual resolution increase in your field of view makes much of a difference.

Yay, thanks andrewf for your answer :D That's the kind of support I like to see. I have also been wanting to run a triple projector 3D setup as I have found 3D TVs to be lacking in the resolution department and portrait mode is very compatible with old games that don't like triple wide, hence why I don't run triple 3d monitors.

Now if you guys can just add OpenGL support then the 3d feature set would be approaching complete! :P *hinthint* RAGE *hinthint*

Im running 1 h5360 at the moment. I am trying to sell my current mac to switch to a sli enabled mobo to run this setup. Will be doing it with water cooled gtx 480 superclocked.

I have access to a nice shop and I am considering building a 3 landscape projector mount on rails using these types of mounts here and some wood.

The projectors would, hopefully, balance on top of the mounts.. then they could be bent on side and moved closer to the projection surface for the 2160 x 1280 portrait view.

Generally speaking, projectors in portrait mode are a bad idea because of thermal issues. Also, I know of no projector manufacturer that will warranty their projectors mounted in portrait mode. Many manufacturers specifically put in their manuals to NOT mount them past certain degree of angle or in portrait. I've asked BenQ and Optoma engineers specifically about this option in a build I did awhile back and they wouldn't commit to it being a viable option (although in that case the BenQ W1000 did work just fine in portrait mode for at least 8 hours of nonstop testing). That being said, if it does not instantly burn out the bulb in portrait orientation, you should be ok after a bit of risky testing.

Also, butting projectors is wholly unnecessary. Just use NTHUSIM Plus and edge blend them. It works flawlessly with NVIDIA drivers and edge blending was added in version 3.0 released earlier this month. I wanted to work with NVIDIA on a few things previously in relation to NTHUSIM, but they gave me the constant brushoff via email. I've been running triple projector for two years now using both AMD and NVIDIA solutions. My current NVIDIA Surround setup uses 3-way SLI GTX470.

Keep in mind that projectors in portrait orientation is highly experimental and requires some risky experimentation on your part. Be fully aware that you could mount the projector portrait and instantly blow a $200 bulb in the experiment or even have thermal damage to the projector. Projectors are specifically designed to be only two orientations. upright or upside-down ceiling mounted. Everything else is a configuration that is outside what projectors are regularly engineered for.

If you do this, keep us all informed because noone has a list of viable portrait mode projectors. I am also interested in portrait mode projection (but with 1080p) because of the shorter throw distance for portrait mounting and the projection pixel height making it into 1920p.

In order to do this, I need to wait for some long throw projectors to come out which support 1280x720 in 3D and are 3D vision compatible. The longest throw I can find is 1.5-1.7:1 which is not nearly enough distance to mount the 3 projectors behind me.

Since none of these projectors have lens shift, they have to be placed sideways in the middle of the screen to accomplish portrait mode. Esthetically I can't hang 3 projectors in the middle of the room so I need to mount them on the wall behind everything...hence a throw distance of 2:1 minimum is needed for me to accomplish this.

LED is coming guys, "2D 120hz" is confirmed & it'll be good, you don't have to resort to DLP_Link, I wouldnt use it that way either.

The Qumi is DLP and it is DLP link. What do you mean no dlp link?

Even if that won't get 3d vision ready stamp ( other LED's sure will be) , generic CRT mode should work at 2D 120hz.

Anyway, better wait for others too. IR sync in theory will be much brighter than DLP Link.

Not too hot on the idea of 300 ANSI lumens even if it has killer bulb life.

1. it all depends on the screen...
2. H5360 has less than 500 after 800 hours
3. you can even stack these.

AAnyone tried running a acer 5360 in 4:3 aspect.ratio in 3d? Mine is packed up right now. Use the projector hardware scaling.

1280*800 pj are working in 3d mode at 1280*720 right?

...one year later...

anyone testet, if anti aliasing is working in 3D Vision Surround portrait?

is AMeLa right? http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=227662

or is something wrong with his setup?

i want to buy a GTX680 and 3 BenQ W700 and put them in portrait. if AA isn't working, this would kill my project.
