2d surround... disappointed
Look nvidia,

I've been a fan for years. I waited months for the fermi cards and now have 2 480's in my rig now. I was really excited to hear about 2d surround (not a fan of 3d)

However....

I have a 22 inch monitor in the middle and 2 matching 20 incher's on the side. Why can't you support configurations like that for surround?

just render the screen at 4880x1050 and leave some option to control where the side monitors are so we can line them up and choose what to cut off.

I've read several threads were you're response has been "for the best experience use 3 matching monitors" Honestly, I dont think people want to buy 3 new monitors for this feature after they just spent a grand on your cards. Really how hard can supporting custom resolutions be? If you want to be competitive with ATI you'd best start blowing some of their features out of the water...

On another note then only reason I have 20's on the side atm is because I planned on buying a 30inch for the center at some point.

Since that has a resolution of
2560x1600

and the 20's have a resolution of
1600x900

can I rotate the 20's to portrait and use surround without stretching since the display in theory would be a 4360x1600 display?

The technology is there. Matrox was able to do everything that you are suggesting here. Why can't Nvidia do it? Because they are incompetent and behind on the game. They let the market pass them as they slept. Now, they are trying to play catch up.

the claim is if you set all the resolutions to the same you should be able to do the 22 + the 2 20s with no issues. I tried 2 17ths with a 24 inch but that didn't work for me. I think it might be because i was using 2 Nalaog and a DVI connection. You should be able to do your setup once you can set all 3 monitors to the same resolution. I would assume the native resolution of the 20s.

I have 5 monitors in my house, the Samsung and Acer 3d monitors and 3 Dell 17th inchers. Can you guess what i'm using for Surround?

Yes, they know nothing about anything :P

I have a feeling their knowledge and abilities have nothing to do with the issue. More likely their priorities. Think about it like this; the percentage of gamers out there that use multiple monitors is extremely low. Same thing with the percentage of gamers that use 3D. It's no wonder these things are slow to adopt. The isn't a large market for it yet, and they aren't going to dump more resources into a technology than they can earn from it. It simply business as usual. You can flip it and say, "well ATI did it!" In turn what as ATI done in the realm of 3D?

"hardware" frame lock is easier to do than "software" frame lock.

Thats why you need same type of displays too.

It just comes down to support, there's just infinitely more problems once you start throwing in more variables like heterogenous resolutions and panels. They probably think their time and efforts are better spent working out the kinks on a relatively few common panel sizes and resolutions rather than trying to figure out why Joe Blow can't get his 19" 4:3 + 23" 16:9 + 24" 16:10 panel working at 5227x943 in Nvidia Surround. If other solutions support what you're looking for, why not just use them instead?

well, if its about a 10 usd integrated circuit component thats being left out, thats sorta cheapskate-ish...

-plus it keeps monitor manufacturers happy, they can sell you stuff with those severe LCD profit margins... 3 times..!!

A $10 USD integrated circuit component paid for by whom and for what purpose? Its more like how many engineers, QA personnel and CS reps they'd need to hire to support additional features and configurations that are even less commonl used than the supported configuration requiring the same resolution. All the hardware is there, after that its all software anyways.

I'm done arguing , 'cuz , interestingly matrox and ATI solutions work just well.

Cool, hopefully whatever solution you decide on works out for you, maybe you can help the OP get his set-up working too. /thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I'll keep waiting for 28 nanometer technology coming next year with my 3x g92b SLI, no surround for me until then by any means. ATI too needs to get their 3d act together, and I'll get a screen (wall) big enough. /teehee.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':teehee:' />
-Usually it sucks to be an early adopter you know.
I was burnt with this DLP projector too somewhat ( all that EDID crap, what a mess, but i wont blame nv for that), at least the result is quite satisfying. Im not sure I'd say the same about those LCD screens.
