1x 3D Monitor/3x 2D Monitors - Will I be able to use all 4? & other ?
I just got my Asus VG278HE monitor. I do not have the 3D Vision 2 kit just yet, but figured I would set it up and see it game in 2D at 144Hz. However I find that when I go into the Nvidia Control panel, all it shows is 60Hz, the same as my 2D monitors. I suppose this is because it is trying to equalize itself? Is it possible to have one monitor that runs at 144Hz and three at 60Hz? Will I need to disable the other three 24" monitors in order to use this one with the 3D Vision? When I started the wizard to set up stereoscopic 3D, it gave me a message "Out of range" - is this due to the fact that this 3D monitor is not showing up as a 12oHz or better monitor? I was able to set up the displays and have them work in the configuration I anticipated with the middle bottom monitor being this 3D 27" and runnning along the top of the 27" are the three 24" monitors. All 4 monitors are 1920x1080. I have the 3D monitor hooked up via HDMI using the dongle that comes with the GTX 580 to convert from mini-HDMI ro HDMI. I also have the far left 24" monitor connected to the same GPU 1 in DVI port 1. The 2nd 24" is connected to GPU #2 in DVI position 1, nad finally the fourth 24" is connected to the last GPU #3. Do I need to move 24" #1 to GPU 2 in order for the first GPU to see the new 27"'s 144Hz? Does the 3D 27" need to be on the first card by itself to do 3D or does this matter? I researched Nvidia's Nview which allows for desktop scenarios and allows switching between these easily, however it is not supported nor allowed in Vista or Windows 7, they have discontinued this and no longer available to GeForce cards, only Quattro's. Because these GeForce cards should allow for multiple monitors and multiple GPU's, I am not sure why there isnt a solution to allow one to switch easily between various usage scenarios desktop configurations. I ran 3x 24" Asus monitors in 5760x1080 using Nvidia Surround. I was able to do single screen gaming in the middle monitor or three screen gaming if I desired to and did for the last year. Now that I am introducing the 27" 3D monitor into the array, there are three scenarios I want to run at and so far I seem to be lost in trying to locate an easy solution. Scenario 1: Daily work, using all 4 monitors. Currently this is no issue and the way it is set up. I can get this scenarios to work just fine. Scenario 2: 2D Widescreen Gaming, there are times I will want to go back and game on the three 24" monitors and enjoy some widescreen gaming. Switching to this easily is not something I have found a solid solution for yet - any ideas out there? Scenario 3: 3D Gaming, setting up the 3D Monitor to allow for 3D gaming while I have 2D monitors connected as well, potentially using them as reference displays or cutting them out completely during the 3D gaming time and going three way SLI to ensure I have enough GPU power for full eye candy and 3D. Either way, I still have yet to find an easy solution to switch to this mode either. Suggestions, help, feedback, advice, direction - all appreciated and thank you for your time to assist me in my quest.

What's with 144Hz? I have never heard of that. I think 3D Vision uses only 100Hz to 120Hz range. Another thing is using correct cables. 3D Vision needs DL-DVI (dual link), regular DVI cable wont work. Its same with 3D televisions, HDMI 1.4 is for 3D cause regular HDMI cable cant provide enought data. I have no idea if converting mini-HDMI to HDMI has an effect. I have single GTX480 with 2 monitors 60Hz and 120Hz. While I play with 120Hz the 60Hz is showing normal Windows stuff. I havent tested 2 graphic cards with 4 monitors, but I think it works like my setup.

Quite a setup you have there!

The HE is a new version that supports 144Hz. From what I've read elsewhere you can still only use 100-120Hz for 3d vision, it won't support 144Hz. Mixing and matching 3d and non-3d has been an issue in the past that would cause warning messages, but that might have been fixed in newer drivers. Mini-hdmi adaptors shouldn't cause any issues. Have you installed the driver for the monitor (if there is one) or tried "allowing modes the monitor does not support" in windows? That might unlock 144hz.

If you connect your VG278HE with anything other than a DL DVI cable you will be limited to 60hz. You will also not be able to run 3D Vision as mentioned above as that requires at least 100hz. If everything turns out great you should be able to run windows desktop on all 4 and switch between running 3D on the 27" and running 2D surround on the other three (it did sound like they were setup in a straight line). If it is that easy in practice and if you have to rearrange display connections at the back of the computer is another topic.
