My Viewsonic PJD-62203D Review...
Ah. Stereo3D gaming is so bittersweet.

I recieved the Viewsonic pjd6220-3D last week, and have been playing around with it since. I havent had much time to use, since I've had to reformat my pc a few times. Anyhow, my intial reaction to finally seeing the Nvidia screenshots after the 3D wizard and Nvidia Test was outright excitement and joy! No ghosting, perfect color, no flicker, checkboard was inperceptible. I was in 3D heaven.

However, upon more play with this projector, its flaws became glaring. And frustrating. /bloated.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':X' />

1) The projector doesn't have an easy time getting the signal you are sending it. If I switch resolutions, there is about a 5-6 second wait. Then the projector can show you the picture. Most times I barely have time to click the "Are you sure you want this resolution?" button before the signal switches back

2) Most games I try in 1024 x 768, the projector just doesnt get the signal. It just shows me a blank screen, and then I have to ALT-tab or Ctrl-Alt-Del to get back to the desktop. I have a feeling this is Nvidia's fault, as some XGA games have no problem with the switch (DreamAquarium works no prob). Any ideas?

3) Contrast is different in each eye. Close one eye and everything is gamma dark, the other eye looks normal. This also seems related to the game, as some games the picture is perfect.

4) 1080i jitters, I had to knock my devices (PVR HD Cable Box and XBOX 360) down to 720p to get rid of the jitter.

5) Less than fantastic throw distance (My Benq screen was bigger)

6) Projector seems to lose lumens when in 120hz.

7) Cant use the 2nd VGA input when you are in 120hz on the other. You have to downgrade the rez first.

Ok so thats the bad stuff. Here are some good points:

1) When the 3D works, it works really great. Picture is great, flicker non existent, color and clarity is just fine

2) Very little ghosting (I had trouble with Blue ghosting until I lowered the contrast, then it disappeared.

Thats about it really. If Nvidia supported the Edimensionals and 85hz, I would have been very happy with my BenQ, as that had a better picture IMHO.

All in all, 3D seems kind of tacked on to an already lackluster projector. Heck even the box had the original pjd-6220 model number, with a "Fuhzion 3D ready" sticker just added on.

Unfortunate that it just could have a better level of quality. I hope that most of these issues are driver related, because its frustrating to have to play my games in 800x600 because my "3D READY" projector cant get the signal. WTF.

Summed up:

Picture: 7/10: colors are nice, but this projector doesnt really stand out for me as far as picture goes. 1080i jitter hurts too.

3D: 9/10: When the 3D works, it works great! The Nvidia Test is perfect. But problems with XGA at 120hz is very frustrating.

Looks: Butt Ugly (My BenQ was fashionable and modern, this one looks like a corporate PowerPoint box.

Features: Nothing great, a very basic projector with 120hz tacked on.

I hope over time I will grow to love this projector. If I can get it working better, Ill be happy enough. At least until a 720p or 1080p one comes out next year. And I'll buy BenQ instead.

Sincerely
Damo3000

(PS: any suggestions on solving any of these issues Im having would be great - Andrew? you must have tested this thing!!)

Great write up, I will forward this thread to our projector team and see if we have comments on it. Yes, we do have it in house.

Thanks Andrew. I'd appreciate any help. By the way, the glasses work fantastic. No flickering or ghosting. Its too bad about these projector issues.

Thanks again for getting back to me. I am going to do extensive testing on the weekend. But at the moment, Prototype seems to give me this issue. I try to change the rez in game and it goes to a blank screen, then again back to the 800x600. Sigh. Ill get back to you with more.

By the way Andrew, thanks for your involvement in the community. I think I can speak for all that we all appreciate it.

Hey Andrew

Here is a mini update for your "projector crew"!

I tried 4 games, Mirrors Edge, Farcry 2, Devil May Cry 4, and Flight Simulator X

Mirrors Edge: Will only work in 800 x 600, with Vsync on. Try XGA, same issue, Projector cant catch the signal. Ctrl Alt Del, Task Manager, Game comes up, in XGA, but no 3D

Farcry 2: starts fine in 800x600, but a switch to XGA results in the same problem (projector flips out with these color flashes, like its trying to get the signal, and poof, back to 800x600 again.

Devil May Cry 4: Cant even get into the game at all, color flashes and no signal. I'd edit the config if I knew where it was and how.

Flight Simulator X: No problem at all. Which makes all this that much more mysterious. Seems games that are already aware of the 120hz setting work fine. Some games seem to be set in their ways!?

(I have applied the "Apply refresh rate to all games" setting)

As a consumer, I am greatly disappointed in the fact that I should be able to take a product home and have it work as stated. I understand the difficulties of this as well though, due to all the variables involved. However, both products are stamped with "3D Ready", and unfortunately its the basic user who will be confounded (I've been a 3D Gamer for 10 years - and Im stuck for answers here). This will definitely hurt 3D sales, until we get past this craziness. But don't worry, Im used to it now.

Anyways, any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Just venting!

Damo,

I had an idea.

What option are you selecting from the 3D Vision Setup wizard when it asks "Are you experiencing any environmental flicker?"
Damo,

Ive tried both. Now I have it set to not apply the refresh rate to all. Before I did set up that way. Which do you think I should select? Are you guys having the same issue over there?

I really want to demo this setup here at the animation studio I work at, but I would rather the set up be better.

(see my other post - Im having gamma issues (one eye gamma is dark in dark areas, the other is light in dark areas and its ruining the experience)

No we arent having this issue as all.

We recommend selecting the override option from the CPL as seen from the attached email which shows a 120 Hz selection. This will force the 120 hz mode on any game.

OK, Ive already done that but will do again. Going to try using my laptop to test the projector as well. Try to nail this down. Like I say, some games work and some dont so Im racking my brain here.

Do you guys also get the one eye darker gamma than the other?

Whats your test bed setup?

Thanks again Andrew.
