Sony â—¦Sony HMZ-T1 HMD support is now available New 3DTV Play Update Utility
4 / 8
Hi,
I went to update the drivers to 285.62 on my M1730 (2x8800) ahead of receiving my HMZ. I didn't know that 3DTVPlay was built in (or about the update) so tried to install the trial. However, it complained that my cards weren't compatible and sure enough they weren't on the list. However, It seems that hdmi 1.4a is the issue, but my machine has DVI-D output, not HDMI). Surely there must be a way to get this to work (without sound, naturally).

Took a step back concerning virtual screen size (for Skyrim using HMZ-T1) - the former HEX 43 was too strenous, also it lenghtended many objects unnaturally, at elast with the convergnece I like. After MUCH tinkering HEX 80 is very fine. Just had bees fyling around in my private virtual HMZ-T1 cinema audience room, hehe... and the horse, oh my... not speaking of that drgaon thingy of course... earthshattering, skytearing! Skyrim is soooo damn beautiful with the HMZ-T1. It's frickin unbelievable. Using standard FOV 65 (tried many diffent, wider ones, but that did not convnce me) and 720p60 (butter fluid and sharp, all Antialsiaing and Anisotrophe Filtering kicking in). Convergenc eset that in sneak close up to my char, frontal, her face slighlty comes out of teh convergnce plane (ie into the auditorium).

If you have an Acer monitor with built-in emitter, just connect it to the PC and 3DTV Play will unlock.

Darn. It seems in my excitement to try out my new HMZ-T1, I didn't realize 3DTV play was free for 3D vision owners so I actually bought it. Is there anyway I can get a refund Andrew? I do own a regular 3D vision kit.

Agree 100%. To me it looks like the FOV of a 22" or 24" monitor. Not good enough. This model is intended for movies and console games though, which means those users might see a FOV increase. So i think we'll really need a dedicated gamer version to get a high FOV.
People seems to be really liking it over on avsforum, which only one exception i think. Comments by gamers all seem to mention console games.

I just got this baby and it is way bigger than a 24, or even 28" monitor. I actually normally sit 4' in front of a Samsung HL61A750 61" DLP TV, with a HannsG 28" monitor off to the side about 2' from me and the field of view of the HMZ-T1 is bigger than either of them.

Well I have my HMD working with 3dtv play pretty well now, but I thought I might comment and provide some input on the "issues" that Andrew alluded to regarding multi-monitor support of the current drivers.
Basically after using the HMD and turning my system off it can take anywhere form 30 minutes to an hour to get it working the next day.
Granted, I have three 3d devices hooked up to the computer I am having trouble with. (the other computer which I run through an Onkyo reciever and then to my Sony HMD gives no problems). The three devices are 1) The Sony HMD, 2) an Acer 27, and 3) an older Samsung.
I am only trying to hook two up a a time since I am trying to run SLI on two gtx 570's.
Once I get it running, I can sometimes go to multi-monitor support and select or deselect devices. However sometimes a device will show but I cant switch to it. Other times I will switch to the Sony HMD and all screens go blank and I have to restart the whole computer. Sometimes upon restart the GTX570's have disabled themselves and I have to go through re-enabling and restarting. I am sure there are many other failure combinations I have forgotten. I have experienced them all.
Even when I can get it to work, the fact that the main 3d display has to be re-designated to the active 3d device is a pain because every time I switch, there go all my icons and gadgets into scrambled mode. It would be nice, eventually , to be able to designate a 3d display from the multiple monitors that was not necessarily the main display for windows. (like you can do with SLI focus).
I understand this is a new device and may take some time to get the drivers working properly with this and other monitors. In the meantime I wonder if there is a recommendation as to how best to keep all these issues to a minimum until the fix is in? I think I saw physical connection and disconnection was mentioned as a solution somewhere. I hope that is not the only option.

Hi
I certainly can appreciate how frustrating this is. We definitely need to improve our multi-monitor 3D support and will do that in 2012. We don't officially support it today, which is why there are problems you are running into.

You can use Stardock "Fences" to keep your icons in order to a degree. Works for me when I switch between my TV and Projector. At least it could help..

Surely there must be a way to get this to work (without sound, naturally).
Thanks!

No-one know the answer to this? It has been suggested that DVI-D can't do packed 3D (side by side?) which is a requirement, hence 1.4a, but I'd like a definitive answer. I know my machine is a bit old, but it was the top laptop 3 years ago and was hoping I'd get a bit more life out of it.

Yeah, i was mistaken. I went and looked at it again tonight and there were some other TV's around for reference. I'm so used to sitting just under 3ft from a 46" now that everything seems tiny. I had that experience with my 30" too.

Well, My set up is via DVI to HDMI, I have no sound output (and can't make the s/pdiF output to work) but Side by Side is working.
The HMZ doesn't even need to be the primary display :
I play video side by side full screen, in the soft (VLC) adjust the aspect ratio, and turn ON 3D SbS on the HMZ-t1 (menu) and voila ! :
3D video side by side.
On a side note if you are on the desktop and turn on side by side and have an image in that format, well the aspect ratio change and there is no correction to that, the image will be stretched vertically, which is too bad...
(I actually tried that with real time with a Stereo camera in Maya) Too bad it is deformed...

Thanks Olivier, good to know. Out of interest, was your video card on the requirements list? The reason I ask is that I tried to install the trial but it complained that my card wasn't supported (8800m) yet Installing the HMZ 3DTVPlay update worked absolutely fine. However, I can't see any reference to 3DTVPlay, so I don't know if it is really installed. How would I tell, given that I don't have the HMZ yet.

Well, I took the long road to discover Nvidia solution... I got the HMZ first... and tried to figure things out...
My card Is a GTX280 XXX OC and I guess it is on the list ^_^
Except for sound problem (so sound in HDMI, can't make my SPDIF to work...) and the fact that the HMZ has to be as a primary display to launch the games, it is pretty cool ^_^
I am experimenting also
Yesterday I attached a web cam on my self to have a 3rd person view of myself... it is an experience !
Pretty funny stuff !

Yea, ever since a certain scene in Ciry of Lost Children I've wanted to try that :) Perhaps with two HMZ's and two web cams, some extremely bizarre perspective swapping could occur :D

I walked the flame (Fire walk with me!), went to the drawing board, eye to eye with a thousand and one Sony engineers... and trumped them all!
A simple string chord now replaces that rubber band - it's not flexible, but there's no need to actually. A second string turns 90 degrees from it down right along my spine under my, you guessed it, arse and around my left thigh.
Besides the obvious intricacies of the placement of the device (I spare you the life like drawing Sony no doubt will include with V2.0 of the HMZ-T1; I will volunteer as that special body part model any time) it offers the benefit of reliability (no free willed glue) and extreme flexibility (adjust it on the fly by shifting weight or pulling the string tighter). It acts as the perfect counterweight on the backside of the head to balance the HMZ-T1 (and creates the pressure on the forehaed pad holder to prevent it from auto shutting down). No force or effort is required to keep it under tension... all you have to do is, you guessed again correctly, sit on your arse.
As if the nerd factor of a Geordie LaForge like Visor held by the arse string (TM, btw, you patent thieves, that you know it!) was not enough, I do no half-arsed effort and will present you with the full monty: Take the cheapest black plastic bag you find, stuff it with aluminium foil and wrap it around the HMZ-T1 with massive use of adhesive tape as if there's no tomorrow. Just leave enough space on the bottom side to squeeze your head somehow in. Gratz, yoú just created the all light blocking NERD-HOOD (TM), the ideal complementary friend of the ARSE-STRING.
Negotiations with Sony are right now pending, but I made them a two for one offer they simply cannot deny! If they don't accept the offer, I have threatened them with publishing pictures of me in my finest NERD-HOOD enthusiastically pulling the ARSE-STRING while wearing the HMZ-T1 - even their marketing practicants will understand that even truck loads of Harrods' models will not help to get this picture out off potential customers' heads.
No kidding, this wonder pimped device exists, lies right beside me and - indeed - grants the best visual quality ever (that is for me using it, not actually for the ones who see me using it - though even this might be debatable, I fear).

Well I have my HMD working with 3dtv play pretty well now, but I thought I might comment and provide some input on the "issues" that Andrew alluded to regarding multi-monitor support of the current drivers.

Hi,

Surely there must be a way to get this to work (without sound, naturally).

Thanks!

Thanks!

You know, in everybody's life there's that special moment. It only comes once and it rears its head for a one time decison only: take it or leave it. Jump the gun or cower. Today, I entered the Thunderdome, I became Mad Max and Mac Gyyer in one, broke the boundaries of the moral constraints of our society and invented...
...
the ARSE-STRING!
After my beloved HMZ-T1's back head rubber band decided to fall apart (no, I did not shred it into pieces, the glue decided on its own free will to become loose and it peacefully, silently and with out violence left this world for a better one...) I walked the flame (Fire walk with me!), went to the drawing board, eye to eye with a thousand and one Sony engineers... and trumped them all!
Sleep well, my fellow nerds.
