Just thought I'd share this, I was futzing with my framerates in a bunch of my games, including modern warfare 2, street fighter 4, and left 4 dead 2. I had the screen resolution turned down with my 3d glasses because the framerate wasn't good at a lower resoulution that I tested at while installing. I recently tried the "native" 1080p (1920x1080) setting in the above games (not sf4 yet, but I bet it works there too) and when I increased the resolution, the frames per second went _UP_!!!!!, the opposite of what I expected. This is totally awesome, now the 3d glasses look way better than they did, which was already very impressive if a little blurry. Anyways I have a nvidia gts 250 and amd 64 2x3.0ghz if that matters, this could be a video card specific thing or a 3d thing, but anyways there should be a note or popup to mention that the cards run better at the HD res and not the blurry rez, which is totally counterintuitive for someone who's been using a pc for a while!!!!

It's mainly because at lower resolutions your PC is more CPU reliant and GPU's really come into play at higher resolutions. That's not to say it is quite as black and white as lower res = low fps, higher res = high fps - that's not what I'm trying to say. Using 3D would only emphasise this aswell.

You can see that in many benchmarks. However, as mini said, you will reach a point where too high of a resolution will show a drop of FPS. Your GTS 250 would go down in FPS if you go higher than 1080 and also in games such as Crysis. Games like L4D or L4D2 will run fine on you GTS250 at higher resolution.

That was my first thought as well, but it's mainly based on statements that I've heard over and over on the web without a real justification/explanation attach to it. Is it because at lower resolutions the main load consists of physics calculations (done by CPU), while at high resolutions it's about rendering? Even so, doesn't GPU always assist the CPU in physics calculations (at least for nVidia cards)?
Regardless of the explanations and the truth behind it, I still think it's a bit odd. On all 3 systems I ever owned, I noticed more or less the same trend: increasing resolution always led to frame rate drop (everything else being equal).

It can be easily verified, check rivatuner gpu usage percent, if lower resolution howers around 50-75% this equals cpu limit, very ugly stuttering artifacts.
