Red Faction 1
  1 / 2
OK, stupid question of the day for this antique game. The game enables the emitter, glasses darken with sync, projector notes 120Hz. Seems fairly clear that 3D Vision is being turned on. Game only renders a single image though, no double vision as per usual. I'm out of ideas for things to try, so I thought I'd ask if anyone ever got this to work, or if it's a lost cause.

is there a profile? does afterburner/rtss fps counter say d3d8?

If its 60hz with 3d vision off, 120hz with 3d vision on. Then its probably going on. Certain profiles will cause game to render 2d. Try a different one. Though I have no idea how emitter can be triggering and depth bar not showing other then not full screen mode.

With latest drivers, there does not seem to be a profile. I tried a couple of the usual candidates like Protype and Aion, but no change. I went back to ancient drivers as an experiment, the first drivers for my 580s that worked. My thought was this would be closer to when it was released and maybe it worked then, but not now. In that version (263.09) there is a Red Faction profile, but it also does not work. Same symptoms of glasses clearly coming on, emitter is on, I can see the green text when I do ctrl-alt-insert, ctrl-f4 shows depth bar. But only single image. Tried full screen, and also windowed mode, including starting with 3D Vision off, then turning it on when in game. Don't have Afterburner, but I'm pretty sure it's a DX8 game. I know that some antique DX8 games work, like Unreal Tournament.

@Kingping1, not sure why you killed your response. I think trying that iz3d solution is worth a try. I'll give it a whirl later today.

it didn't work. all i got was a yellow screen with some coronas. without profile and with vsync enabled in the launcher i get a low convergence/high depth 3d effect while turning and high convergence/low depth 3d effect while strafing with lots of tearing. the problem could be that 3d vision doesn't support transformed vertices (anymore).

Last chance probably. I just checked and its DX8. Can try this, some work -- most don't. http://enbdev.com/download_convertor_dx8todx9.htm Ive never thought of it but it may be possible if that works, to try tridef. [If it can get it to dx9]

Interesting ideas, and worth a try. I tried the enbdev download for Silent Hill, not sure if there is anything game specific there. It seemed to run without any trouble, or perhaps not run at all, I couldn't see any difference. Running the iZ3d driver as described in that other thread, I also get the same bad result that KingPing1 is getting- a heavily yellow screen with some lights burning through what looks like acid fog. Also with iz3d, I need to use the Pure Faction launcher, otherwise it crashes at launch. Minus iz3d, it launches fine and runs fine, but no 3D shown. Seems to be converting to DX9. When I run Helix mod at the same time, I can see the red debug text at the top. No other commands work, and cycling shaders doesn't work.

Thanks for those suggestions, I really appreciate the good ideas to try. Tried all those comobos, including even trying the Vireio driver against the app. I also double checked that System Shock 2 is working with iz3d, to be sure my system was working correctly for known good cases. Tried all the variants I could think of, outside of Tridef, but they don't include a profile for this old game. No good. Can't get anything to change, except for that yellow mist. Dang! Those parts with the submarine would look terrific in 3D. I love these old games. It reminds me of how games today are trying to be movies, instead of games.

Well, one last thing to add here, in case someone else googles this. Tried moving back to older equipment, an 8800GTS card, running the earliest driver (off the old CD install) of 185.85. That's Vista only, but I did install them with Vista compatibility. No change. The driver lights the pyramid for bright green, but the game doesn't show any 3D effect. Frame rate halves from 120 to 60, but game is still 2D. Looks like this game can only be played in 3D using the original shutter glasses like Elsa Revelators.

Lol. You know all the Settings I've thrown at this one trying to get it to work... the last version of dgVoodoo introduced DX8 Support but unfortunately I couldn't get it to run, it would just crash with an insufficient memory error... anyway here's what I did to get it working with the latest version of dgVoodoo. :) Download the Latest version of dgVoodoo(v2.51) http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2.html and drop the DX Files(D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll) into Red Faction's folder(C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Red Faction). Then using GeForce 3D Profile Manager(Import/Export) and something like Notepad++(Edit) replace Red Faction's Profile with the following Custom Profile, if you haven't used GF3DPM before I'd suggest reading Helifax's CM Guide:
Profile "Red Faction" ShowOn GeForce ProfileType Application Executable "rf.exe" Setting ID_0x701eb457 = 0x2241ab21 InternalSettingFlag=V0 Setting ID_0x708db8c5 = 0x58be476a InternalSettingFlag=V0 Setting ID_0x70edb381 = 0x2420894e InternalSettingFlag=V0 Setting ID_0x7058b6e1 = 0x6e0326f9 InternalSettingFlag=V0 Setting ID_0x7064f0c2 = 0x6322a896 InternalSettingFlag=V0 EndProfile
Notes:The LaserSight/Crosshair isn't Dynamic but it is into Depth and quite usable, remove line 9 to use NVIDIA's LaserSight instead of the in-game Crosshair... it can be a bit small/hard to see. Edit:The movies are a bit messed up but I think that's an issue dgVoodoo...
