Heads UP for Alienware users. Sony also recommends AGAINST upgrading to Win10 on VAIO laptops currently: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/862417/geforce-drivers/windows-10-official-353-62-drivers-killed-three-samsung-lcd-displays/post/4627512/#4627512 (I don't intend to spread "panic" but I just want to help people make an informed decision)
anybody else having this issue with the emitter turning off??
Yeah, it seems like Win10 is turning off power to the emitter when it's not being used, like USB power saving or something. For me at least it's always powered straight back up when 3D was activated though.

Yeah, it seems like Win10 is turning off power to the emitter when it's not being used, like USB power saving or something. For me at least it's always powered straight back up when 3D was activated though.

My emitter turns off as well. And when I try to run the set-up wizard it says "primary display's adapter does not support 3D vision." Yet it did in 7 & 8. I'm using an accell mini display port adapter hooked to an alienware 23 OPTX. I only get the 3D-setting option in the nvidia panel, the one at the very top, everything else is gone. This is all on a brand new alienware. Anyone have any advise please?

One of the biggest problems I see going forward with Win10 is a subtle change. As near as I can tell, the user no longer has the ability to block or defer updates. You can block a specific one AFTER it has caused you grief, but you can't block anything in advance. This is a deal-breaker for me in 3D. It's hard enough to keep stuff running as it is. I really, really do not want to be force fed updates that stand a good chance of breaking the driver, or a game fix. Imagine the new world where you get a brand new NVidia driver whether you like it or not. Even when your system is currently stable and you want to finish that game. I'm on 350.12 right now because it works best with Mordor (Win7). If they force fed me the top of tree 353.62, this would break my game. The latest driver fiasco from NVidia will hopefully make them reconsider.

It is a concern, I think that the home version has no control but with PRO and other editions you can actually defer updates.

Its nice people help but again this is not the place if your looking for blocking this or that. They have reg hacks and *.cmd files and theres a program called "DoNotSpy10" that you can check which you dont want. So I have mod drivers installed and not once has Windows installed over them. As for the emitter in Win 8 to 10 it always goes off after awhile. Yet I never leave it plugged in. And I cant tell you how many times in Win 8 that it installs it and then you plug it back in or something and you get that yellow triangle. So I really dont think its a Win 10 problem. If you did ANY testing of Windows 10 before launch then there was a problem where you would install something and windows would over right it. This has been fixed. Just like in Windows 8.1 you can tell Windows 10 NOT to install drivers. So for ME.. if I do anything that really matters I dont' use windows.

According to that KB article, without extra hacks, you only get to block a driver AFTER it has hosed your system and you recover. I'm not very interested in that scenario. Also, when do they force a shutdown? When running Win7, I had it literally shut the computer down and reboot while I was in the middle of a game at full blast. I really don't trust Microsoft to get this right, but maybe no one else cares.

It's not an ideal system for people like us, agreed. But it's something. I get why they're doing what they're doing regarding updates though, it certainly makes for much better security for most of their users though.

Yes, the PRO version of W10 allows updates to be applied the same as in W7. You can choose when and what to install. I recall reading that previous versions of Windows OTHER THAN the Professional Edition would only be allowed upgrades to the 'Home' edition of 10. This is apparently not the case. I did a clean install of W10 after downloading it to a flash drive, and I was given the option of which version to choose - Home or PRO. I chose PRO naturally, knowing in advance that it meant greater control over the system. Anyway, I was upgrading from W7 Ultimate, so I don't know if that made a difference, but at any rate, I would highly recommend installing PRO instead of HOME edition. As for people complaining about using this thread to discuss general issues NOT directly related to 3D, please ease up. It isn't everyday that we get a new OS and the infinite number of questions/concerns that accompany it. And frankly, this is one of the only tech-specific forums that I participate in. There are probably others like me, so really, what's the big deal? I'm not going to form an account at Tom's Hardware or FubarTechDaddy's (not a real site btw) just for the sake of keeping one thread in accordance with the proper forum category.

You can tell Windows not to install any drivers by way of Windows Update. Enter the system menu (right click "This PC" and select properties, or right click the Windows start menu icon and select System). Hit Advanced system settings in the left nav, select Hardware from the tabs on the new window and then select Device Installation Settings. Pick "No, let me choose what to do" which will expose some more options. From there change the setting to "Never install driver software from Windows Update". Obviously you'll have to manually check for any driver updates with this set but I suspect most of us do that anyway? Just a thought... As for Windows reboots - it always schedules at a "time you don't usually use your device" which is normally in the early hours (between 2am and 5am) depending when you're gaming I suspect. Most people probably know this and choose not to disable the updates but thought I'd offer it for anyone that wasn't aware of the option.
I would highly recommend installing PRO instead of HOME edition.
I've read that if you have a home edition of Win 7 or 8.1 you're stuck with Home for 10. They MAY have gone nice nice last minute on that, but I kind of doubt it. There's no advantage that home has over pro that I know of, so it'd be pretty derp to select it.

I mean, you HAD to have read it to get down to the sentence you quoted.(?) Let me summarize what I've already said: I have W7 Ultimate edition. I had the option to choose HOME or PRO when I downloaded W10. Whether or not having Ultimate W7 made any difference with that, I don't know. All I know is that PRO gives you the option to choose when and how updates are applied. Home does not. (At least that's what Microsoft has said). So yeah, there is absolutely an advantage to installing PRO if you care about that sort of thing.

- " I recall reading that previous versions of Windows OTHER THAN the Professional Edition would only be allowed upgrades to the 'Home' edition of 10. This is apparently not the case." I'm correcting that bit of your post. I'm saying if you have Home when you upgrade, you'll still be stuck with Home, you wont be able to pick Pro in *that* case. - "So yeah, there is absolutely an advantage to installing PRO if you care about that sort of thing." Yes, and I said Home doesn't have any advantages over Pro, so why would it always be optional for everyone to be able to pick Pro? Further adding to my argument that existing Home user can't get Pro through the upgrade. Hopefully that clarifies my post.
