I guess you could call this the spiritual successor to the Baldurs gate games.
Now from what I can tell its 3d models but the backgrounds are purely 2D renders.
So I guess this game simply wouldn't work in 3d or am I wrong?

If 3D won't kick in at all, it probably can't be played in compatibility mode (fake 3d). Even CM relies on depth buffer information to work though, and if the backgrounds are indeed pre-rendered, it won't work.

I just tried with Tridef and only P3D works, but like someone above has mentioned that only the models is in 3D and background 2D renders. I'm still playing it even with 2D background renders. Still looks better than the 2d models. lol :))
