Woolfe - beautiful 2.5D platformer with promising S3D potential
  1 / 2
In the summer I have backed Woolfe The Red Hood Diaries on kickstarter (release in February 2015). It's a 2.5D platformer with puzzle and fighting elements. Most interesting for me was the wonderful art style that reminds me to Alice Madness Returns and Trine. Here is my gallery of the game: http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/3d4dd/album/545a5680d475fe9c5f00013a/ (pressing alt+F1 for screenshots causes the character to sneak so don't be irritated about the posture ;) ) You can download the alpha demo of the game on steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/330700/ To run the game in S3D and another resolution than 720p I had to do the following: in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\WoolfeTRHD_Demo\Demo\Engine\Config change in BaseSystemSettings.ini
ResX= [value You want] ResY= [value You want]
and set
Fullscreen=True
and in BaseEngine.ini set
AllowNvidiaStereo3d=True
The game uses the UR3 engine so I could fix the issues the demo has (halos caused by water and fog, light shafts). It should also be possible to fix dynamic shadows but atm they are disabled (I hope that I will learn how to fix them until February ;) ). To use the fix (for the 64bit version!): - download this zip file https://s3.amazonaws.com/3d4dd/Woolfe.zip and extract the content into the directory that contains the game's EXE file WoolfeGame.exe (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\WoolfeTRHD_Demo\Demo\Binaries\Win64) - start the game directly with WoolfeGame.exe (in my case the game crashed with the fix when started from the steam library) - enable high quality graphic (in the main menu press esc for options) - if there a still issues (3D doesn't kick in, bloom effects or ambient occlusion are at wrong place) restart the game until it works - v as hotkey to toggle between 2 different convergence presets (cut scenes, gameplay); You can customize the settings by pressing the hotkey, adjust convergence/depth and save it with Ctrl+F7. I have tried several profiles (Alice, Prototype, Aion, etc.) but it messed more up than improved the S3D quality.

@ 3d4dd: I installed the demo and was able to get 3D working using the .ini edits, but I was not able to get your fix working. I'm sorry but I didn't understand the bit about it being a .jpg and changing the name. That didn't make sense to me, and since it was a .jpg, I couldn't do anything with it. I did try to make it a winrar file, and then unzip it again into the directory, but this did not work. As for the game, it felt like a poor man's Alice. For some reason my 360 controller would not work, forcing me to use the keyboard only. That made it too frustrating to try and conquer the more difficult encounters. Has anyone else had this problem? At first I thought there must not be any controller support, but the control scheme screen shows my controller, so... I dunno...

It's a zip file in disguise, rename Woolfe.jpg to Woolfe.zip, not sure about the controller my wireless 360 controller worked and I can't remember having to do anything special ... the only thing I can think of is when you start a game before turning on the controller and it doesn't 'see' it.

Okay, thanks. I thought I tried to rename it to .zip, but maybe I didn't... I honestly can't remember because I tried several things. As for the controller, the only other game I've ever had a similar issues was with LA Noire. Occassionally it just wouldn't detect my controller no matter what.

@SnickerSnack: As it is not allowed to attach zip-files in this forum I had to rename Woolfe.zip to Woolfe.jpg. Make sure that You can see the file extensions in the explorer when You rename Woolfe.jpg to Woolfe.zip. Otherwise You might rename it to Woolfe.zip.jpg. Both Xbox 360 controllers (wired and wireless) worked for me. Update: Here You can download the fix without the need to rename it: https://s3.amazonaws.com/3d4dd/Woolfe.zip

This game released a few days ago on Steam. http://store.steampowered.com/app/281940/ It's $9.99 for volume one with 2-3 hours of gameplay. Volume 2 is expected in August. So how is the 3D? Gameplay?

^^ Due to my backlog I will probably not buy this right away. Based on the demo, I'd say it would be worth picking up eventually. 3D was playable even without the fix, but as mentioned above, I had trouble getting my controller to work. I would probably be more excited about the release if not for that. Very similar to Alice: Madness Returns with a more side-scrolling feel.

The game works fine with my Xbox 360 controller. I'm just working on a Helixmod fix for the game...

I was thinking about grabbing this, Dead Island Franchise Pack(for Riptide/DLC ... hoping they're single keys)and Nail'd. Edit:Grr ... wasn't paying attention Nail'd wasn't a Steam key. :( Edit:Double-Grr ... Dead Island Franchise Pack was a single key, already had Dead Island. :(
