Zelda Botw .- Real gaming again
I've played almost all of them, starting with the first, I listed the original Zelda in my list of the solid action-adventure titles(The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, A Link Between Worlds, etc)... this game is largely influenced by Skyrim's faults. Lol. So far I haven't hit that 'Gameplay is king' moment yet... maybe one day when I get a sword that doesn't shattered like a glass dildo mid-combat, unless you mean foraging useless crap to make recipes in a pot so I can refill my hearts and get a 8:00min resistance to cold... Lol. Still the furthest thing from the original action-adventure... So for fans of the original(and almost the entirety of the franchise) like myself, this Zelda is Skyrim-lite with a new paint job... it's slapped together, dungeons/shrines have been utter jokes so far and more importantly it completely ignores the majority of the iconic stuff in the series... the stuff that makes the series the series... you can like if you want that's fine by me but I still think it's lacking... :)
Never had an issue with the weapons being destructable. By the time i had done 1 of the divine beasts I had so many decent weapons that i didnt know what to do with them. I think I used a cold resist potion once and that was early game, but even in the tutorial area you are given a jacket that gives you cold resistance. I hardly ever had to use healing potions either, especially once you do the Zora divine beast..So it wasnt really an issue for me. Its pretty insignificant in the scheme of things because you rarely even need to use potions if you know how to fight in the game and use the environment. It really doesnt ignore most of the iconic stuff. The exploration is the best its been since the original, and the game is the least hand holdy its been since the original. Finally a zelda that dosnt treat the player like a complete idiot. The master sword is there, the lost woods, tons of weapons like the boomerang and magic rod, the blue flame, lynels. So many conventions are here and reimagined in cool ways. Controlling link is the best its ever been, with the most varied moveset and traversal in an open world game. Dungeons are here, but i agree they are one of the games weak points. Everything else is represented in some way for the most part other than the hookshot

Destructible weapons are stupid/illogical in design... bows and shields that shatter like glass, and at the end of the day not exactly something you associate with TLoZ. Neither is having so many of them that you don't know what to do with them... yes I got the jacket after climbing the mountain, which is also pretty stupid Link can climb ANY surface... including the ice pillars he can make out of water... Not sure what you mean by using the environment yet, other than maybe push some perfectly placed boulders into a perfectly placed camp... or maybe climb a tree and take out the archers first. The bombs will take out pretty large trees yet fail to take out an archer's perch... Like I said I'm not impressed so far, the only reason I'll keep playing it is because it's a LoZ... there's isn't even theme music/background music, the things that I've found so far that are there almost feel like nods to the very game it's supposed to be... it's missing something, it's charm. I wanted to hate Wind Waker, I only pre-purchased it because it came with OoT for GC... but that game blew me away, I had made and printed out blank maps, charted the sea and was exploring every bit of it... and as much as I wanted to hate it because it wasn't what Nintendo had shown originally it still wound up being an amazing adventure while remaining true to it's style/roots... idk I'll keep plugging away at it when I can but it better do something major and quick because I'm not feeling it yet... it shouldn't take this long to amaze me, sure the landscape is nice but that's about it so far. :/

Mix that with the ability to glide and shield surf and you have the best traversal in the series. It doesnt sound like you are very far, only weak weapons break fast. Most of the weapons you get after a quarter of the game or so last 10-20 enemies at least and you have tons of them. Its just not a problem later in the game. And enemies are so weak in the eraly game that their weapons are good enough to kill them. It makes all weapons useful, its a great system. As for the environment: You can sheild surf. You can start fires, and ride the heat it creates upwards with your glider then pull your bow out and do a slow mo shot to headshot guys. You can shoot electrical arrows into metal containers near guys and they will get electrocuted. You can use your time stop move to smash things into guys. You can throw a metal sword near a group of guys during a thunderstorm and lightning will strike the sword and electrocute the guys, and possibly start a grass fire burning any wooden weapons they may have. You can paraglide over guys and drop your bombs from above and explode them. You can pick up large objects and drop things on thier heads. You can roll bombs loooong distances down kills or float them down rivers and explode them. If you want to see many many more cool things you can do in this game watch a youtube video. But that would rob you of the joy of discovery in this game. I didnt even figure out i could shield surf until 20+ hours in. I discovered i could hang glide and land on a deers back to catch it and ride it. This game is so packed with detials and mechanics its crazy. TRy pulling a bomb arrow out when you are in the volcano area. Suprise, it will explode from the heat and hurt you. The game has amazing systems that create tons of unique scenarios. Ive never had a game give me so many suprises even after 80 hours of playing it. As for wind waker...eh i think its piss easy, and has the worst dungeons in the series. Exploration isnt fun because the rewards suck and its just tons and tons of sailing. It has amazing art and music and a nice story, but the rest is not great imo.

I recently finished the game. I liked it a lot, it was fun. The low weapon durability wasn't a problem for me, especially since you are constantly showered with new weapons. In fact the breakable weapons is a key gameplay element that forces you to constantly change weapons, resulting in very different combat scenarios. For the same base enemy type, the combat feels very different depending on the weapon you are using. It also encourages you to play with the whole set of tools given to you through the physics system, instead of just using the same sword and going through the motions. The climbing part was fine. (no, it's not that amazing, it just works). The real great thing about the climbing is more about how the developers have managed to integrate this totally OP gameplay and made sure the gameplay and story would still work out fine. Clibing anything without breaking the game : that is quite the achievement. Overall, my first impressions (on the first page) have held very true. The game itself doesn't push the envelope of the open world games in any specific category, but what it does, it does well, and each part reinforces the others making the game as a whole much better than the sum of it's parts. I also found the gameplay to have very few clear defects. (no stupid XP gating, no feed to farm enemies of components until the very end, no stupid UI malfunctions, etc...). Throughout my time with the game, it just worked well for me. But the most amazing thing for me was that despite it's very low amount of enemy types, the very lacking story and sidequests, I didn't feel bored at any point and the sensation of repetitiveness (inherent to any open-world of this type) arrived significantly later than in other open world games I've played in the past. The only real repetitive part I felt early was the mini-games for finding Koroks (complete the stone circle, match the cubes), the optional quest for increasing inventory space. And you don't need to do them, you can just keep walking past them and do an other one a little bit farther, because there are more than enough to complete the quest.
