When I try to download people's attached .jps 3d screenshots from these forums, I can only save them as .jpg or .bmp files, which obviously is not the right format for the 3Dvision Photo Viewer...what am I doing wrong?

Change the file extension at the bottom to 'All files.'
Then delete the .jps from the file name, and then type it back it in. I have no idea why you have to do this, but if you don't then Windows will just save it as a .jpg.
