3D vision R.I.P. 2013....Oculus Rift and Bioshock Infinite.
2 / 3
Anyone with a display that supports it should try triDef 3D driver... it really is a world better than 3D Vision. I run both, but always start triDef first, and often never even turn on 3D Vision except for 3D Vision ready title ( the ones that are really 3D ready ). You can try it free for 14 days by the way.
Not sure I would agree about the death of 3D Vision, nor do I think at this point the Rift is anything more than novelty, not in its current state with obscenely low resolution. And before anyone runs to its defense, I would revisit my opinion if a consumer model proves to be substantially better. Nvidia clearly adds improvement to existing games and releases profiles with each new driver release. Not the sort of thing a company does if they do not care about 3D.

I do not think 3D Vision is dieing but I think it like Eyefinity and Surround is and will always be some what of a nich tech. Or at least I hope it is not dieing with the money I have spent between the two of them. With three rigs and three Asus 27" monitors on each rig plus two Crossfire setups and one SLI plus a Panasonic 50" 3D Full HD Plasma just for gaming. I really hope both technology's are around for a while longer. I just wish Nvidia would get there shit in gear and fix there Surround support correctly in Windows 7 and Windows 8 it is a shame that Nvidia has let it go this long as it is.

Well, I think Nvidia has stopped supporting it already now, but as long as we got some community involvement, I think we may be good for a while. THE WORST thing that could happen is that one day we install a new driver and their is no 3D vision support/driver. Then we would be stuck forever using an old driver.
My expectations for the Oculus rift have been tempered by user reviews on this site. It's still our best chance for mainstream 3D acceptance, which may also trickle down support to 3D vision.
I DO LOVE my 3D vision surround setup. Playing GRID 2 right now and damn do I get into that game with 2 extra monitors. I can't imagine how awesome flight sims would be in 3D vision surround, if I was into them.
If/when I buy a new house I'm thinking I may do 3D vision surround with LED projectors!! Still gotta wait till HDMI 2.0 as I can't stand playing at 720p on my Acer projector. 1080p 3D vision projectors would be SICK...

The future of 3D gaming . . .
?
Wonderful technology that really struggled to take a proper grip of the market
as for why - many reasons:
* general lack of interest / slow sales of 3D related products from general public
* massive negative media coverage of 3D in general
* a lot of people hate the idea of having to wear 3D glasses
* lack of CONTINUED investment marketing the technology
* lack of interest from developers supporting 3D
* sizeable investment required to achieve 3D. I thinks its easier to convince someone to buy a nice big family tv with 3D than it is to convince someone to invest in a replacement monitor, which is no doubt the same size or smaller than the one you have already, along with buying the 3d vision kit swell.
* 3dtv with vision - confusing launch - which models worked, which don't - quality loss etc - all concerns for the buyer
* crap bodged 3D cinema movies - again just bring bad press on itself time after time
More immediate concerns
=================
* With dx10 & 11 now slowly becoming the normal, making direct 3dvison support even harder
* sony and xbox not showing much interest in promoting their continued support to 3D
* rift - very mixed reviews, in current state doesn't sound any better, infact worse that 3dvision
I don't see the dx10 / 11 issue as being a great problem, if the developers WANT to support 3d in theirs games, they can - and are able to achieve the very best of 3d gaming experiences - Tomb Raider 2013 , Metro Last Light
The future
=======
* 3D needs to loose the terrible dark cloud that seems to follow its every step.
* 3D vision / Rift / Movies need better marketing, with better press coverage
* The initial cost of getting into 3D needs to be lower
* Developers need to embrace it FULLY, thats the only way it can succeed, theirs no point in patchy support, with the odd release here and their working - embrace it across the board
Im not saying I expect it, but 3D Vision could easily keep going for a number of years, it's not so much the technology that's the problem, its the consumers opinion of 3D in general. The only way that will improve is with committed, top notch, consistent support.
Some of the very best 3D vision experiences throughout its time have been recent releases, where developers have properly invested time and resources in trying to achieve the best possible 3D. Developers aren't going to invest, unless public opinion improves, that wont happen unless investment is made in marketing.

I really love 3D gaming. I find that it is a very unique experience, with that being said technology will continue to advance now entering the ERA of VR and I am excited for that to as well. It's like remembering the good ol days of playing Super Mario bros on a big CRT an experience that will live on in my memory, so too will 3d gaming. Like Mario Bros, 3d Gaming will soon fade away into a distant and cherished memory of awesome gaming

I think 3D Vision just has lack of advertisement SO much.
I never see any adverts of 3D Vision when i buy it many years ago, i never see anything all this years. 3D Vision just HAS NO ADV AT ALL.
I discovered 3D Vision at it's release just because i checked this technology and i found it myself.

3D for gaming is natural and 2D is actually unnatural. Our brains want to experience the world of gaming like we do in everyday life and that's in three demensions.
This is subjective, it's also personal preference to the end user. I still sometimes use the first nvidia 3D Vision kit which i purchased several years ago now, whilst games like metro 2033 and max payne 3 can look different on very high stereoscopic depth-it still (to me) is nothing like my natural vision and the perspective on the real world i see on a day to day bases. I see 3D Vision as a bit of a gimmick really and i much prefer playing games without 3D enabled, with 3D Vision i just loose to much detail, colour and in game lighting effects, maybe the first 3D Vision glasses are too dark?. 3D media and tech seems to come into fashion and then goes out of fashion, it's been around for a long time but i think the day you can throw away those 3D glasses it might be better once the technology and monitors or TV's have advanced?. I enjoyed nvidia 3D Vision at the start (two-three years ago) but the novelty wore off for me. Maybe nvidia 3D Vision kit 2 might be better than kit 1?, don't know don't care if i'm honest plus i got better pc hardware to think about and invest in.
Yes, 3D Vision 1 with non-LightBoost monitor makes the picture notably darker
Bloody says the Rift doesn't have quite as much depth as 3D Vision. I don't think its full IPD.
The 3D depth I've seen on the DK2 is more than sufficient for my own tastes, the only down side is the resolution and the fact the headset makes me sweat after 30 mins. Some may want more depth, but I don't think more depth would look natural.
Elite Dangerous looks fantastic, the cockpit looks the right size and things in the distance look like they should, except the screen door effect makes distant objects fuzzy. DCS World A-10c also looks as I feel it should, other than the cockpit feeling a bit too large.
Doom2, Quake 2 and HL2 also look great.

I would search youtube for the t-shirt mod. Works great with keeping sweat out. I can play Live for Speed endlessly without issues.
The only caveat is I will still start sweating on my head if there's subtle (sometimes otherwise undetectable) levels of nausea occurring. It's like my early radar detector with it. HL2 will have me sweating within 10 minutes.
Also agree that depth is very good. The 3D, resolution aside, is every bit as good as 3D Vision IMO.

Unfortunately they are the masses, it's either them or the kids raised on Halo and CoD. I'm pretty sure OR/VR will still be consider a niche. The masses don't want to wear glasses to achieve stereoscopic 3D, it's highly unlikely they'll want to wear a set of VR goggles to achieve the "Palmer Part". :D
Don't be as closed-mind as the people you blame (the 3D haters masse). The Rift is not simple glasses, the Rift is a display. A new kind of display. And this time, this tech won't be discredited by cheap 3D effects movies like for stereo 3D. People have no prejudice toward VR, on the contrary, they are curious about it, and actually want to try it asap.
And they will be mind-blown by this thing.

Exactly what I think, and by all the investments going on their is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that it can fail.
VR is the future but 3d as we know it with those stupid glasses is a thing of the past, it's pretty much dead and burried long ago!
VR is a whole different media and 3d done right!!

I'm shocked when people say something like "3D with glasses is past", "Glasses is dead" while they are currently playing flat games on simple monitors with no any enhancements at all

Don't take and use my words out of context, the masses I was referring to weren't the 3D haters but the micro-transaction lovin' masses along with the kids raised on FPSs ... the majority of 'gamers' that couldn't care less about or even be bothered to set up stereo sound(or anything for that matter). They don't hate the tech and troll the forums(those are a special breed) but considerably worse they just don't care about it at all or can't be bothered with it at all ...
People don't have a prejudice towards VR because they haven't even experienced it yet, to them there hasn't been some dumbed-down anaglyph version, or extremely 'ghosted' version, or some lo-res lo-depth console version. To the masses VR is like some gigantic mythical unicorn piñata full of hype, once they finally crack it open then they'll have a chance whine about it and once that starts it just becomes the cool thing to do, hey let's bully VR!!! It happens with just about every enhancement with video games, rumble, 3D audio, 3D, controllers, etc. I'm far from close-minded but that's the reality of it all ... personally I'm sure I'll love VR for some games and still love my 3D rig for others.

TsaebehT, people often say "3D gaming? I don't need it, i'm quite well play on my monitor. I'm not impressed with 3D gaming at all".
But true is: "I never see any game in "right" 3D, but saw 3D movie recently. 3D movie = 3D gaming. I'm not up for bothering myself creating this for my games".
Many and many ppl that say they are satisfied 2D gaming and need no any 3D just never saw it in flesh.
If Nvidia pushed 3D Vision as agressively as they push PhisX or some bullsh1t like Shield or their last feature "gaming" tablet, 3D Vision was much more popular at present day i'm concern

People have no prejudice toward VR, on the contrary, they are curious about it, and actually want to try it asap.
And they will be mind-blown by this thing.
VR is the future but 3d as we know it with those stupid glasses is a thing of the past, it's pretty much dead and burried long ago!
VR is a whole different media and 3d done right!!
