I'm really getting pumped now. I didn't receive my confirmation email, but I've managed to find a site that has basically confirmed my order.
I was in the htc vive camp at the start but knowing valve time, htc share price and the lack of any exclusives for the vive so far it's not much choice.
The vive will be more expensive, for sure, maybe even double and I also know how lazy I am.....
I'm sure walking round the room is great for a while but after the novelty has worn off, I'd just be sat down anyway.
I might cancel the rift preorder and get a vive if valve pull half life 3 or portal 3 out of the bag.
The rift is like an apple product. There's only one and they make both the software and hardware.
The vive is being made by HTC but valve have said other partners will release there own versions of the vive later on down the line.
This sounds like android to me. Defragmentation.
Not good for gaming.
We've already got a pc with lots of possibilities for incompatibilities, never mind the headset itself aswell.
This is what swayed me to buy the rift.
As much as I hate Facebook they seem to be getting the rift right.
Also look at steam OS and the not so well received steam controller.
When you take that in to consideration and the fact the vive was born from gabe throwing a hissy fit about Facebook buying the rift, then I think i made the right decision.
I think the price is spot on too. When you think how much a gfx card cost these days or a high end monitor its a bargain!
I hope powerdvd add support for 3D films with no loss of brightness or crosstalk! Yes please!

Open platforms not good for gaming? Worked pretty awesome for WIndows (gamers) these past couple decades. I'm really uncomfortable with the Apple comparison, because Apple has been an horrendous mobile steward when it comes to gaming. The app market sucking is solely due to Apple's irresponsibility in my book. And the fact Facebook has a lot of the same priorities/ethos as Apple makes me shudder at that comparison.
I don't really care that Android is even worse than iOS, because that's not the point. Play simply built on the cess-pool foundation that Apple had already established for mobile. There was no turning back time no matter what Google would have attempted.
Here is a question for everyone.
What are you willing to pay for HTC Vive?
Like I "was" willing to pay $600 for oculus rift but based on reception did not. However thats pretty much as high as it gets.
Valve is a strong name in gaming community and I can see that community/gamers. I am strongly interested in what Source Film maker community will do with it. I could see myself spending $800 simply because it has the advantage of name and controller [I am not going to even acknowledge 360 controller]. But pretty much only if others were happy with it. Yes, rift has a controller which will be added eventually at a price thats unknown but I am less impressed treating a controller like an accessory/optional. Not to mention a Rift developer does not have to support the touch. Most people "might" not even buy it.
Honestly, if they announced 799.99, it would be a no brainer insta-purchase for me. I can probably talk myself into 999.99, but they'll need to give me a day or two to psyche myself into it (none of this stealth nonsense please).

If it is only 100 more expensive than the rift i am totally getting it instead. I am not going to support rift after this. They should have been honest with the price. They lost me there!
And they also lost me when they say that a GTX 780 is not recommended, that is ridiculus!

Hi guys,
It's your decision, but I am trying to understand the rationale here :)
1. The minimum requirements are agreed upon by both Valve/HTC and Oculus. Both have the same set standard.
2. No-one ever said the price would be cheap. Luckey gave a rough ballpark. As I posted earlier, there is a huge difference between DK2 and CV1. Now he tells us the price before the pre-order and assures us that it is at cost. No-one twists your arms to buy it but a large part of the VR community is in agreement that it's better to be expensive and good rather than be cheap and gimmicky. No-one has really lied to you, and you can cancel the pre-order any time you want.
Could they have made a good $350 HMD and sold it? Yes.
But, would you rather there be a good $350 HMD or a great $600 HMD?
Testers at CES have outright said that the CV1 is a similar if not a better experience than VDK2. We don't know the final price, but Valve haven't given any hints. Except perhaps an as yet unknown development environment, (remember that they claim to be Open, great, but they also haven't invested into any developers either, whereas Oculus has) there is no real difference as the software for both will likely be modded to support the other's device regardless.
Why on earth, then, are you guys happy to pay hundreds of dollars more than the rift, the price of which you are already complaining about, for something which is likely going to be the same thing?
Is it just a pitch forks and hate train thing?

Windows 10 64-bit, Intel 7700K @ 5.1GHz, 16GB 3600MHz CL15 DDR4 RAM, 2x GTX 1080 SLI, Asus Maximus IX Hero, Sound Blaster ZxR, PCIe Quad SSD, Oculus Rift CV1, DLP Link PGD-150 glasses, ViewSonic PJD6531w 3D DLP Projector @ 1280x800 120Hz native / 2560x1600 120Hz DSR 3D Gaming.
As a 3D gaming immersion enthusiast, I am planning to get and try all 3 VR headset types (I have no plans to cancel my Rift pre-order, for example). However, for anyone planning to get only one headset type, more information and pre-purchase comparison is good (in my opinion).

It's apple and android all over again.
I shouldn't have made that comparison!
They'll both be good, without a doubt.
These are excited times, we shouldn't ruin the excitement by guessing which is better and investing emotionally in that decision.
That would be silly.
Whichever you choose it's going to be epic!
I just hope the vive comes out this year!

Tried Elite Dangerous with an older DK (don't know which one). Head trackig was good, but was seriously underwhelmed by very poor resolution. I know it will be higher for the CV, but I doubt it's enough. I'd really have to see with my own eyes.

It comes out 1 month after Oculus Rift. And its pre orders are Feb for April.
Anywho thats the problem. These are $500+ items and all comming out at same time and people are already weary. Theres a "chance" that whichever you choose might not be around in a year or two.

Many people including myself were willing to pay the Rift's price. We weren't expecting it and they never corrected them selves based on previous estimates. They just dropped it and said go buy it. No one expected it to be that high. This created a huge negative feedback loop. I would of paid that price happily knowing that XXX,XXXX people are as well.
They just don't have the numbers where I am confident that investing in them is right. They seriously have like only half the people who bought Developer kits buying it seems based on forums. They are sold out for however many months but thats kind of BS marketing where they only expected to sell X amount and underoutput to make it seem better. Nintendo does it with Amiibo's as an example.
Day one purchases are an investment and for $600 bucks. Not many people are going to "invest" in them with such a negative outlook. They really screwed up.

dice have just got a team together working to make the frostbite engine VR compatible.
You know what that means?
Light sabre fights is what that means.
The hi-res 3D audio working like Dolby atmos. Pew pew lasers, ATAT's walking over head as you look up.
+ battlefield 5 this year. imagine the helicopters and tanks wth the rift or vive.
Then there's shooting games like duck hunt, operation wolf, time crysis etc.
I'm thinking out trying it with music production too. Would be cool to try with logic or Cubase.
Eqzitara,
I hope you're right. I just feel a bit cheated after they delayed the vive. I really wanted one for Christmas! :D
The controller was delayed multiple times, the steamOS that has not really gone anywhere.
My heart is with the vive but my head is with the rift.
I'm just going with what comes out first. I've waited too long already!

A.) It's not a pitch fork thing. I already said how my mind works. I don't respond to gun to my head tactics. If I would have had a night to think it over, I could have talked myself into 599.99 (or at least made the pre-order and kept the option open). But constantly misleading and then forcing me to pay almost 700 dollars (after taxes + shipping were added) was something that I'm going to react negatively to. Maybe it's a tactic that works for most, but I'm deliberate and thoughtful with my purchases and putting a gun to my head and telling me to respond doesn't yield positive results with me.
B.) I have no problem waiting now, because the wait time quickly went to June. Then you throw in the Touch controllers and wham, you're mostly likely talking 800+ once you factor in more shipping and tax (and that's assuming they're 100 and not 150 or more.)
C.) I consider the Vive concept much better. Palmer can talk all he wants about room scale with CV, but without a chaperone system, this is just stupid talk.
I expected Rift to be significantly cheaper as a result. This was how I was led to think, and I thought for a first gen product, if the savings was significant enough, I'd make that sacrifice and just roll with Rift.
D.) For me, trackpad > analog stick. Don't really care about the finger gestures, because those are gestures used for Facebook apps. So I actually like the Vive controllers more than touch (Though I agree one or the other is a necessity for VR).
E.) I don't really buy that Rift is better. I've seen numerous CES impressions state the screens were identical. And even if the Vive does have a little bit more SDE, which I couldn't say without comparing them myself, I'm not sure I even think this is a bad thing. All these consumer sets are running low resolutions for that FOV. The only way to hide SDE is by smearing up the optics (which is why Palmer once ranted and raved about Fresnel lenses). I'm not so sure I wouldn't rather have slightly better text legibility (at the cost of more SDE). It's not like Vive still isn't a massive "upgrade" of DK2 in that regard anyways.

Guys, I've just read some disheartening news.
Someone anonymous has posted to pastebin which highlights disappointing delays with the Vive, which are as-yet undisclosed but extremely likely. The consensus on the forums is that due to a lot of the post's predictions being true, that this is genuine. Intriguing read here:
http://pastebin.com/eSrfwwpU
Most people are agreeing that there will be no Vive launch any time soon. Acceptable launch quantities will be attained in September, and mass availability will be Christmas 2016.
I hope at least that the final Vive will have at least 1 review sample so we can compare apples to apples against the rift before the rift starts to ship. If the Vive is indeed better, I would hesitantly wait until Christmas.
Someone analysed this and said:
It's not that it's not going to be a good HMD, or even the best HMD, it's just that they are not ready. Not even close. If they launch, it will be a paper launch, and extremely hard to get a hold of a consumer unit. You are just not going to see them in any number until September. I'm thinking they they have been making noise they are close to juggle possible buyers along and get them to wait for Vive pre-orders and not dive in on the Rift. If they said, "We wont' really be ready until end of 2016" most VR enthusiasts would just buy the Rift and wait to get the Vive (if they do at all). But when it seemed like they'd ship at the same time, it makes sense to wait and see. However, I strongly fear we'll be waiting a while for the Vive.
If this is true, it means that HTC have deliberately lied to us regarding the launch date of "Ready for Christmas 2015", Lied to us with a launch date of "April 2016", and will lie to us again stating something similar to "Ready for September 2016".
I certainly hope this is not true as any scandal like this is just bad for VR in general.

I certainly hope this is not true as any scandal like this is just bad for VR in general.

This review compares the two as they were available at CES:
Two GameSpot editors' opinions, based upon back-to-back CES comparision: http://www.gamespot.com/videos/htc-vive-vs-oculus-rift-at-ces-2016/2300-6428847/.
It's hard to imaging the final consumer version of the Vive being better than this, so it's a reasonable data point for comparison. They say that Rift is better visually (no screen door, unlike the Vive), but has smaller FOV. The main rave about the Vive was that you could walk around a room, which I would not give a crap about as I can't move 2ft in my house without tripping over something. The Rift controllers were preferred as well because they have little sticks on them...

From my POV:
I want to chose "3D Vision" VR equivalent over "AMD 3DH" VR equivalent...
Just look which ONE is still around and which ONE was ABANDONED! (Hint: 3D Vision is still around while AMD abandoned 3D 2 years ago...)
I don't care about ANY BRAND! They are ALL made in CHINA anyway:) (reference to "Armageddon" film)
What I am interested in is:
- SUPPORT...games, apps, DRIVERS, ability to write your own programs
- BACKWARDS compatibility to games BOTH CURRENT, PAST and FUTURE GAMES!
- A piece of hardware that doesn't GO ABSOLUTE within 2-3 YEARS!
I plan to PICK one and STICK WITH IT! Like I did with 3D Vision and 3D Vision Surround! I basically have 2x 3D Surround systems around. Compared to DK2, 3D Vision Surround is ... 1000 better (No actual comparison can be made)!!! And I will not abandon 3D Vision Surround anytime SOON!
Now I want to see CV1 or Vive...
ALSO! What I am mostly interested (and YOU SHOULD TOO) is what 3D Vision fixes we are able to run on any of the VR headsets! Just look on HelixMod Blog and the amount of games we fixed and the TIME PEOPLE PUT INTO FIXING THE GAMES !!!
This is PC gaming FFS not the "next Iphone" GIMMICK.
Let's not even start between Apple and Android... APPLE IS SHIET! ALWAYS HAS BEEN! ALWAYS WILL BE!! BUT PEOPLE ARE STUPID! They think a "cool" design JUSTIFIES the shiety hardware they put inside, just because it "looks cool"...(I am talking about Personal Computers here...but their phones/tablets are just as crap). But, ONE IMPORTANT thing to mention is the SUPPORT! PEOPLE believed in the devices and THAT IS WHY we see so many apps for IOS !!!
Which puts us back on the track: We want a "IPHONE" popularity VR or a "Windows Mobile" popularity VR ? (BTW I have a Windows Mobile Phone... It works perfectly well...but the application support is non-existent).
So... My opinion is to WAIT... and see "who" is MASS adopted: the Oculus Rift of the Vive!!! (I don't have enough time to play games in 2D. If I do a fix or work on my wrapper that is alot of time that I "break" from being a gamer. This is for 3D Vision. Now imagine trying to support multiple VR sets... I know that a lot of the people who are responsible for 3D game fixes are in the SAME boat, so we should play SMART ^_^).
Also, we should look for the VR hardware that supports 3D Vision (as best as it can), so we can still enjoy the current fixed 3D Vision games IN VR. Since nobody asked for a PRICE/PER FIX I find it MORE than acceptable and also shows respect to the developers who made these fixes possibles!
I am talking about: Helix, Chiri, Eqzitara, bo3b, DarkStarSword, Mike_ar69, Flugan, DHR AND ALL THE OTHERS that don't come to my mind tight now!
I think is in OUR best BENEFIT/Interest (as a community) that we should stick together and PICK the best thing FOR US (gaming and developing wise)!
(PS: I know I am being picky, but after the abundance of "3D Vision Ready" games, that you can count on your two hands, I am very hesitant on following "the wave"... My advice is: "Patience and make an EDUCATED choice, once we have more info: info on what is supported by whom, hardware/software reviews, etc")

The problem is waiting but neither is going to win over controller/technology since its at a high price point.

Yes please!
I don't really care that Android is even worse than iOS, because that's not the point. Play simply built on the cess-pool foundation that Apple had already established for mobile. There was no turning back time no matter what Google would have attempted.

I shouldn't have made that comparison!
They'll both be good, without a doubt.
These are excited times, we shouldn't ruin the excitement by guessing which is better and investing emotionally in that decision.
That would be silly.
Whichever you choose it's going to be epic!
I just hope the vive comes out this year!
