aww crap.. I've decided that I will return asus vg278h for now and wait till they release fixed(revised version) or something. Oval shape lightbleeding and refletive glasses are starting to bother me coz now I know they are there. They don't effect actual performance now but I will be very mad if they release better version in next few months. Since I am spending $700 on this item, I want it to be perfect and don't wanna feel bad about it few months after if they release improved version. I am just gonna keep acer hn274h for now and see how things go for next few months. I better do so now coz I still can get full money back for this defected unit. So much fun for just few days of use. :(

That's a huge bummer on the Asus VG278H but I totally agree with your course of action. That would be some serious buyer's remorse if you didn't return it in time to get a full refund. Hopefully Newegg does right by you and gives you a return shipping label so you don't have to go out of pocket on any of this. And hopefully Asus gets their act together and fixes the problem. From what I saw in your other pics, it looks like it may be the backlight warping/distorting one of the TFT films/layers. These kinds of growing pains on LCDs aren't uncommon though, I remember there was a lot of these kind of defects going around when the first 1920x1200 24" panels hit the market for $500+.

My work got one of these in today and I played around with it. Overall I'm very impressed.

First some of the negatives: the DVI cable is a little snug to get in, the stand seems a little off kilter on my desk, but only very minor. This monitor is 27", but it doesn't seem that big to me. I have a 16:10 samsung 24" beside the VG278H and its about the same hight screenwise, just wider. Its not like a 27" imac which to me looks massive. Once in games it definitely felt bigger than my ~23" BENQ XL2410T I have at home.

There is a bit of backlight bleeding around the edges, no halo/oval. Monitor is a bit bright out of the box in 2D mode and needs some adjustments, but isn't that bad colorwise after tweaking.

Now the real important part: 3D! This monitor is great! Ghosting is still there. I tried a number of games I have played extensively on my BENQ at home. In skyrim I see the same types of ghosting i get at home, though personally it doesn't bother me all that much. The Lightboost however is amazing. At home on my Benq when the 3D glasses kick in I really notice things get dark and when either popping the glasses on and off while looking at the screen or toggling the 3D effect on and off I would notice significant brightness changes and perceptible color changes. Not so with this thing, glasses on and off there is the slight yellow tinge but brightness wise there is hardly a difference between the 3D and 2D mode when toggling back and forth. Bravo Nvidia and partners.

I wish I could have waited on jumping on the 3D bandwagon to get one of these. The brightness makes that much of a difference to my enjoyment of the experience. I don't have deep enough pockets to run out and grab one for personal use, perhaps the Benq XL2420 or some other low cost 24" model with lightboost will arrive soon... and I can enjoy lightboost at home

halo, oval lightbleeding is invisible unless you set brightness level to very high and put completely black background on it. Some units get it a little while some others get super visible. It depends on unit. From what I've heard, all the units out now are going to get it in few days of use, not right away. I use mine on 0 brightness level on 2D so I never see this oval lightbleeding but I know it's there coz I did test on higher brightness with black background. Even I don't see it in actual use, would anyone wanna keep it potentially defected unit that could get worse later on?

I've read that thread over at Hard|OCP. Total bummer. Hopefully this doesn't happen to our work monitor as it totally puts a wrench in some of our plans. Thankfully personally I have no money and have to wait anyway. I guess we'll see what other lightboost monitors appear over the next 6 months.

Try turning up the digital viberance in the Nvidia control panel before going into 3d mode. It can really help with the darkness.

Hi there, I just got a brand new Asus vg278h lightboost 3dvision 2 monitor that I love.
I have an alienware M17X R3 3d... This laptop has mini DP.
I'm using a proper Dl-DVI adapter that is 330 hz, designed for output of 3d to a monitor from mini DP.

With the 285.79 drivers getting 3d to the monitor through the DL-DVI adapter works great, no problems at all.

Once the 290.36 drivers are installed the 3d output to the monitor now STUTTERS every 3-4 sec.

Thus I have gone back to the 285.79 drivers.
I know that the new 290.36 drivers have DP 1.1 support now for the new BenQ DP monitors coming out soon.

I hope this is a problem that can be adressed as I know many people that use a DL-DVI adapter to output to a monitor.

Please help and please fix. Having new DP support is great but what about people who dont have DP monitor and still want to use 3d on their DL-DVI 3D monitor.

I really like my new VG278H so far. Decreasing the default contrast to about 50% reduces the crosstalk to the point where I can't really see it and the monitor is still way brighter than my Alienware ever was. I can't really describe it, but with the increased brightness and reduced crosstalk, it makes the 3D better and more immersive.

I already registered it on the Asus website and they provide a 3 year warranty so if anything goes wrong with it, I feel confident that I will get a replacement.

I am not so sure how my acer hn274h looked like coz I already put it back to box and was gonna sell it to friend. I am too lazy to unbox it and set it up again but I might do so and see if acer hn274h had same problem or not. anyway, here's screen shot and pretty much this is how mine looks like. I already got my rma # from newegg but gonna wait a week and see how this goes b4 i ship it back to them. how is yours?

edit: i took out my acer hn274h to compare with asus vg278h.
pic 1: one on top left is asus vg278h. acer hn274h pic came out more bluish and bigger due to monitor position. acer one was too closer and lower so color is slightly off.
pic 2: acer hn274h close look. it doesn't have halo. it looks whitish but don't have halo. everything has spread evenly.
pic 3: oval halo.. i hope it gets better in time.

Shinobier, do you notice any issues when gaming or typical desktop usage like surfing the internet? Since they offer a 3 year warranty you do have the luxury of waiting a while I think.

I just ran the UDPixel and tested the black level with the brightness and contrast at 100% and did not notice the halo/oval issue that you are describing. I did this in a room that was completely dark at night. I have only used this monitor for a couple days now but I will check again after more usage to see if anything changes.

I don't have any issue on gaming or regular use yet. at current level of halo problem, it's not really noticeable unless i put complete black background. If asus is going to swap mine for brand new fixed version later, I wouldn't mind keeping it but I don't know. I don't think they will just swap it to v2 for me if they ever release it. it's too much of work for me but I will unbox again and see if my acer hn274h has similar problem. I only tested for dead/stuck pixel or white bleech problem so wasn't really paying attention if there was any irregular lightning spread or oval halo bleeding problem like this.

still, i think asus probably received many complain about this from early buyers and aware of this problem. they might release fixed version silently in order to minimize financial loss since giving replace to everyone who already bought it would cost them lots of money. at least intel did announced cougar point problem and gave customer fair replacement option when they first released 2nd generation i7 sandy bridge processor even though they lost lots of money. that's kind of trust i expect from asus so i really do hope asus do the same as intel. we will see.. at this point, replacing isn't option since every single one that's out now are having same problem.

According to some the issue starts to come up after a few days of use, but then begins to fade back to normal after a few more days. I won't be RMA'ing mine any time soon so I'll let you know how it goes, though so far I have no signs of halo'ing (only my second day)

Well got a pair of 3Dvision 2 glasses today...

Gotta say, i'm not too impressed with them, i was really hoping for improvements not just different issues. The frames themselves feel too small, the arms of the glasses arent long enough and now pinch directly above my ears rather than above and behind them like the old ones... the shiny glossy glare around the lenses is just as distracting as ppl have said it is, this is the dumbest design choice ever. Total fail.

Its sad that I waiting a couple year for redesigned glasses just to end up wishing i would have just got a pair of the original glasses...

has anyone tried taking some sandpaper to the glossy finish around the lenses to dull it up some?

I will agree that I would prefer the newer model without the glossy finish but besides the larger lenses I also like how there is some space from the front of the glasses themselves and the lenses. I can already see these don't get dirty as fast as the old models for me and protect it from getting scratched better. I wouldn't call it a total fail though.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

since it's still early for 3d vision 2 stuff, nvidia should take things off the shelves and replace them all like how intel did with sandy bridge. it will let them make more money in a long term instead of constantly getting these complains and not being able to sell half of stuff they suppose to. right now, ppl by because 3d vision 2 is new and ppl are curious but once they see these critical problems, they will end up returning them and not buying at all. so i say fix it while the damage is still minimum.
