Asus VG278H Lightboost and Dell l702x
Guy's, please can you advise.

I have a Dell L702x "3d" laptop but would like to see 3d on a larger screen, so I'm interested in the Asus 27" Vision 2 with built-in emitter.

My queries are - will my 3d laptop send 3d to an external monitor seeing as the laptop already is 3d and will I have to disable the laptop's built-in 3d emitter?

Secondly, my laptop has no dvi interface - only [b]HDMI[/b]/[b]DisplayPort[/b], and 3d games through HDMI would only be at 720p (so I'm told) , so can I send '3d 1080p' from a laptop which doesn't support dvi?

Any help would be appreciated.

The Asus 27" does support 3D over HDMI (any format) but you are limited to 3DTV Play HDMI 1.4 framepacking (1080p/24 or 720p/60 framepacked) on that connection. You may also have to pay additional $40 for 3DTV Play in that case because both of your native 3D hardware uses built-in emitters (not 100% sure on this). A potentially better solution for you is the BenQ XL2420 (whichever version has built-in emitter), as it will allow you to use 3D via DP and HDMI. DP would give you the opportunity for 120Hz frame sequential 3D Vision support, although your laptop GPU would struggle at 1080p/60 3D for most modern games: http://gaming.benq.com/gaming-monitor/xl2420t/specification/#skip

I believe you should be able to use an ACTIVE display-port to DVI adapter to do what you want.
My personal experience with them (not in 3d) is they are a pain in the ass.

Thanks - i did consider the benQ but the only version available in the UK is the one which doesn't have the built-in emitter, and I'm not sure if buying this version will complicate things due to adding a usb emitter to my already 3d laptop.

Yeah I've been looking into this with mixed results, though the 330Mhz version has proven to be okay, judging by the info I've read

One of my previous employers used to buy machines with only display port connectors, I had an active adapter to a 30 inch dell monitor, the issue I and several others running the same configuration always had is that the display and adapters would never come out of powersave, which I assume has to do with using USB for power, and the order the devices try and turn back on.
It of course would have been fine if IT had not locked the power saving settings.
