Bought a 3d projector
  1 / 3
And after owning the Asus VG278HE for about a year, I can say that the monitor has been the better experience by far imo. The low resolution of projector was a big one for me, a lot of people here said they did not notice much difference. I also did not like the low brightness of the colors, that was a pretty big deal for me. However it wasn't completely unpleasant, I did enjoy the nearly ghost free experience, and the huge 106 inch screen. I had the Benq w1080st for about 5 days then returned it.

That's a budget projector. If you want better you have to pony up! Panasonic have bright projectors with technology that reduces the gaps around the pixels and do look awesome even in 720p but that's still low end really and they're at least £3k. If you want 1080p 3D you'll need at least £10k for a projector and nvidia 3D Vision pro and a quadro card! Nvidia sure know how to chicken feed tech out and make people pay for it! It's like they don't know 3D 4k TV's with HDMI 2.0 exist. 3D is a lot better on a bigger screen. You get the effect more! There's no way I could go back from a projector now!

I have essentially the same setup, a VG248QE (with g-sync kit) and an Acer H5360 projector that is roughly comparable to your W1080ST. For me, the monitor is not even close to as good an experience as the projector. I wonder what the difference might be, whether personal taste or technology? The big difference there is that the W1080ST is a 1080p native display, the H5360 is a 720p display. Since the deal breaker was resolution for you, I wonder if the upsampling from 720p image to 1080p display was done badly. Assuming we are talking about gaming, not movies. In gaming, you'd need to run 720p to get 60Hz, and I pretty much assume that any display not running at native resolution will be fuzzy. In 3D mode, could you see the pixels? When I'm in 3D mode I cannot see the pixels on my H5360. In 2D mode I can. 120 inch screen, I sit about 120 inches away. I can agree the lower brightness of the colors is not nearly as good as the monitor, but mostly if you don't use a proper screen. I just use a flat-white wall and it's definitely not as good as the monitor. For me, I find the ghosting on the VG248QE is absolutely terrible and distracting. Edit: to use right model #.

I have both an Acer H5360BD and Benq W1070 (same as W1080ST) and personally I prefer the upscaled to 1080p image of the W1070. It's a trade off between smoothness and sharpness of course, and somewhat up to personal taste. Mainly I appreciate the better pixel fill factor on the native 1080p image. As far as brightness, for my tastes a high gain screen is required for good brightness in 3D. I've used both a 1.0 gain screen and a 2.6 one. The only trade off is that the bright image can over power the weaker parts of the glasses and you can sometimes get a little ghosting in the edges of your vision, if you're sitting very close (which I do).

There are a couple other reasons I took the projector back, the depth in 3d games was not good enough for me even with depth hack, compared to my monitor. Also I wanted this projector to double as a good solution for 2d gaming (I play ffXIV) It was pretty terrible for 2d games mainly because of brightness, however playing console games the brightness seemed better, I played around with the windows 7 calibration and could not get a good picture. I also was using an Elite screen 1.1 gain. I cannot say the experience was horrible, but not worth the 900 rupees I spent on it. Btw who wants to buy my 106 inch screen? Interesting take on it. My monitor (VG278H) has higher image clarity, but the projector (W1070) still provides a great image, and I find myself favouring it most of the time.
I geuss I am a sucker for high resolution toyified textures
I picked up a BENQ W1070 just within the last couple of weeks along with a 120 inch screen and before I purchased the projector, I had this very concern you mentioned here. A couple of differences from my previous setup were evident. The toyification effect is certainly a difference, but I realize that it has everything to do with how close you are sitting to the screen. In fact, I can really get a great toyification effect without causing cross eye. Having experienced both a screen and projector, the projector is hands down a better proposition for me. I love the elimination of ghosting (well almost 98%) and the immersive gaming experience. In fact, I find the brightness much better than my Samsung 51 inch plasma. Raising the "light cell" or "brightness" on the plasma would in some cases create a lot of ghosting or double images. This problem simply does not exist with the projector. But having said that, I can see that it is purely subjective. I just re-visited the Dead Space series on the projector and even though I am running at 1280x720 resolution, I am blown away by the experience. Games actually look much better than they did before and this is also probably the help of the GTX970 and CPU I just upgraded. I've adjusted my viewing distance and I can honestly say that I hardly notice the resolution difference from 1920x1080 to 1280x720. Perhaps, this may be that I have adjusted to the projector now. I won't go back to LED, LCD or plasmas at this point. The projector is certainly a great option since the price point is in the same area as the plasmas etc...., but this may not be for everyone. Having the right space and environment is important.

Ya I saw the toyification worked just fine, but it didn't look as good with the low res. Wish there was a good way to compare 3d gaming setups in person . It would definately help with purchasing decisions :( , but I guess I am happy enough with my monitor. Wish I could see the rog swift 3d in action...

The ROG Swift has had a whole lot of reported problems in 3D, I'd stay away.
