Oculus Rift First Impressions
  6 / 14
Here is an experimental JPS image I made of HL2 from what it looks like in the Rift. This gives you a relatively decent idea of what it looks like in the Rift, using 3D Vision to see the stereo. This is a photograph, using a point and shoot camera, with flash disabled, focus set to far. I tried to align the images properly with Gimp, but you might want to use 3D Vision Photo Viewer, and play with the up/down (d/f) and left/right (e/r) keys in full screen.

I reprocessed your Image with stereophotomaker to make it watchable.

That's gross. Like I can see in the future of the device but people who talk about immersion[though dont own it]. Its just a big head tilt for me. Looks like I should play on Rift without my glasses[Legally blind]. Got an email a week ago about it preparing for shipping then no tracking or anything,

The Rift currently has swappable eye cups for glasses, future models are supposed to have an adjustment for use without glasses. http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/a-bespectacled-look-at-the-oculus-rift/ Rift inventor Palmer Luckey said. "Different eye cups are not the plan for the consumer version," Luckey said. "[The] consumer version will use lenses with a much narrower depth of field, so that you can just use a minimal physical adjustment via a knob or a dial or something to tune in the focus."

Something that looks interesting and useful with the Rift, is the Leap Motion paired with Windoes 8 touchscreen navigation. http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/25/leap-motion-gesture-control-technology-hands-on/ The Leap is still in it's infancy but has some incedible possibilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC1xxJvj-2M

Co-founder according to article I read. I never heard of anyone besides Palmer as founder past today so who knows. People who write articles go less for fact and go for sensational. @dman I know of eye cups. I was referring to being blind enough that pixels wont bother me. Was a joke.

Co-founder. We'll see how much this impacts the product going forward. I'd be interested in trying this out.

It looks to me like they ship once a week in a large quantity. The eye cups are odd, but OK, I used the strongest when I didn't feel like doing my contacts, and my glasses don't fit. Not bad at all. Roughly a -4.0 on the C cups, which is almost exactly my prescription. Another thing of note is that it definitely causes more eyestrain than usual. I'm having a hard time getting it dialed up to be more relaxed. Might not be doable, but I'm still working at it.

I've followed the story fairly deeply since Kickstarter, backed it about half way through the campaign, signed up on the forums, got the SDK as soon as it was available, saw some event stuff like GDC- and I'd never heard of Reisse before. That's not a huge surprise, lots of people work in companies that you never hear of. Seems more like a personal friend of Palmer's. Still sucks. Doing the thing you love and making progress and boom.
I reprocessed your Image with stereophotomaker to make it watchable.
Thanks, great suggestion. Not sure how I went all this time without knowing about StereoPhotoMaker. My other shots were too far off to share. Not surprisingly, taking photos through the lens is challenging to get useful stereo shots. But StereoPhotoMaker pushed them back to usable. Attached here are the other 4 shots I took. I think these are pretty representative of what you actually see.

I know we usually say that 3D [Vision] is like looking through a window into another world but the Rift really is like looking through a window ... screen and all. :D

I really hope this supports the Razer Hydra as well but it does have Oculus Rift support. It sure looks like it could be fun. Surgeon Simulator 2013 (Team Fortress 2) http://store.steampowered.com/app/233720/

It supports the Hydra, but the support was a little buggy at first. It's been patched a few times since I tried it, so maybe it's improved. It's kinda fun, but also very frustrating. Doesn't work in 3d.
