Is this Ghosting?
Hi, recently bought my first 3D monitor, the Asus VG278. I played Mass Effect 1 for 5 hours and i love it. Today when i started playing i see 3 commander sherpards, one in middle and 2 ghosts, one on left and one on his right side. Same with other objects. This was not the case yesterday. What changed? I applied the Helix dll's yesterday and it was fine. This ghosting occurs everyware now, should i change the drivers? Even the nVidia test application has ghosting now and it didn't before.

To answer your question in the topic title: Yes, it is :)

Unfortunately I don't have an out-of-the-box-answer for your issue but you could try one or more of the following:

- Make sure the glasses are fully charged and clean (a little spot on the infrared sensor can really mess things up)
- try lowering the depth (CTRL+F3 / CTRL+F4 to adjust)
- lower the contrast (55-60 seems to be a good value for this monitor)
- raise Lightboost

Also try out another game and see how it looks there - if the other game runs fine, then it's definately Mass Effect.

It works =) Lightboost, was at max allready, i did lower the contrast to 55 like you said and swiped the IR reciver. I did remove the dll and shader folder to. No idea what made it work but it was really ugly before and now there is no ghosting at all =)

Another trick you can try, if you can live with a max frame rate of 50 FPS, is to change the refresh rate of your monitor to 100Hz - it does a good job of reducing ghosting even more. I have the same monitor as you and found using a contrast setting of 55, with Lightboost at max, was a good way to reduce ghosting while still having a brighter image than I had with my old Alienware 3D monitor. This is with the refresh rate at the normal setting of 120Hz.

I was experimenting with my settings one time and found I could reduce it even more by dropping my refresh rate to 100Hz. For games like Skyrim I set my contrast to 70 and run at 100Hz. I find I don't really notice much of a difference in capping my framerates at 50 this way as opposed to 60 since 3D Vision already forces vsync anyway. I always have the option to alter either setting if a game demands it. I even made batch files where I can change my refresh rate to 100Hz or 120Hz at a click of an icon without having to go into the Nvidia control panel. Obviously the exact path to the monitor refresh rate differs from between operating systems and 32/64-bit but mine looke like this since I am on the 64-bit version of Windows 7. The first line below is for the 120Hz batch file and the second one is for the 100Hz batch file.

REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D" /v StereoRefreshRate /t REG_DWORD /d 120 /f

REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D" /v StereoRefreshRate /t REG_DWORD /d 100 /f

Hmmm

Although the lower Hz significantly reduces ghosting I find the glasses flickering at 50hz per eye makes using them feel 'oppressive' somehow. Like gaming when I am really tired. The next step up, at 110hz (55 per eye) is far more comfortable and still reduces ghosting but sadly for me the lights in the house flicker like crazy.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Yeah, I am sure it's not for everybody but might be useful for some people and worth checking out.

I don't have any magic settings, basically lower contrast to 55, also i enable the 3D after the game launches. Ghosting appears now only when i see for example my characters head against a very bright background. Try resetting all settings, re-install the drivers with clean install etc. I had heavy ghosting for a while and then it disappeared so it must have been some bad sync or setting some ware. Also try reducing to 100Hz, i did that and it's even better. By the time you read this you probably have played through ME1 =)

Yeah i have no idea suddenly i don't notice any ghosting. Something weird with this game, but when it works, it looks amazing.

And nope i'm not through ME1, not by far :)
