Skyrim HDR/SLI/AO What's working and what isn't...
1 / 2
Thought I'd start a new thread for this, as I've seen information scattered about in the other forums too.
I've read comments from people saying that some features don't work with certain configurations so I thought I'd post my findings.
I'm running in SLI and in 3D and ambient occlusion is definitely working. Running the 285.79 Beta drivers and using the Nvidia inspector 'hack'.
All the MSAA + FXAA settings seem to be working too.
I think HDR is working as well, as the brightness of the screen changes as I look around, unless that's bloom?
Also, this is important to note, but one of the HD texture packs I added broke AO, but removing it with the nexus mod manager resolved the problem and enabled AO again.

Interesting finds rustyk, I've read of a few incompatibilities with HDR or AO and SLI also, although I think some of the problems may be self-inflicted by users who are making custom profiles for Skyrim/SLI and thereby erasing their AO compatibility bits included in the driver. Or alternatively, using the 4gb.exe mod and not pointing to the new process. Doesn't surprise me that everything that SLI might break works with 3D Vision however since its technically no longer SLI for 3D Vision, but there's definitely some shared frame buffer issues still with the stereo driver (like water transparencies).

What settings are you using with Nvidia Inspector for AO in Skyrim? I could never get it working with 3D enabled.
It should be: 0x00000029 (Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim)
Pretty sure that flag has been set in the latest two Beta releases, 285.79 and 290.38.
If you are using the 4gb patch, make sure to add TESV.exe.4gb to your Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim profile via Nv Inspector or the GeForce SLI Profile tool or AO, SLI, and any enhanced AA modes (like TSAA) may not work properly.

Well that's got me thinking Chiz, since I just started using the 4gb patch and didn't update my Inspector profile. Maybe I'm mistaken about AO and confused it for something else?
To my shame I'm not being particularly scientific about this, but I wanted to try and establish some facts, hence me starting this thread.
I'm basically using most of the settings as recommended in the geforce uk tweak guide.
I suppose I was hoping someone with a more expert eye would be able to confirm what's working from the screenshots.
Interesting what you say about 3dvision v SLI. Are you saying that there is technically a difference in driver behaviour between plain SLI and SLI with 3d vision enabled? I bought a second card 'just because I could' but I've always been staggered by how well 2 cards scale in 3d vision mode.

I have tried a lot of tweaking with Nvidia Inspector and could never get AO working with 3D enabled. If I shut off 3D in the control panel and launch the game, then it works. It would be nice to have ambient occlusion working but I have to pick that or 3D, it's not much of a decision really.

I can confirm this, AO doesn't work in s-3d. In fact can anyone specify a game, where it works by forcing form the nvidia panel or the inspector in s-3d?

Just to bump this, as people in the main thread are saying AO isn't working in S3D.
I had to reinstall my drivers and noticed Skyrim was looking really flat.
Went back into Inspector and reconfigured the profile again (using Fallout 3 flag) and straight away, AO is working perfectly in S3D. It makes a huge difference.

I have been wanting AO since release, for us non-technically minded folk, what do you do to get AO working?

Sorry must've missed this reply earlier rusty.
Yeah I wasn't sure about the need to update the .exe in the profile, but now there's no need since the official .exe is LAA. I can't say for sure if it worked or not either but I do know the SLI and 3D Vision profiles are different from each other; they both use app detection to trigger, but the 3D Vision profiles are still hidden so that we can't modify or add .exes to them, we have to wait for profile fixes and use .exe renames in the meantime to get the benefits of the 3D profile.
As for AO, I can't say for sure if it was enabled or not since I always disable AO in any game I'm not already comfortably achieving 60FPS in. I did notice what appeared to be AO inside Black Briar Meadery near the walls under the cobwebs....kinda interesting. Looks like you did get it working though.
And last bit about SLI in 3D Vision vs. normal AFR in 2D. There are some differences since in normal 2D AFR, each GPU is rendering a different frame, but in 3D AFR, ideally each GPU is rendering a different eye view of the same frame. You can get some strange results as a result of inter-frame dependencies and frame buffer clears. In normal AFR its often exhibited by "flickering" because data isn't being synchronized between GPUs. In 3D AFR, it usually looks like something is only rendered in one eye, but in some cases, problems that exist with just a single card are actually fixed in SLI with 3D (I think Andrew made a note of this recently with Jurassic Park? I also noticed the same with Dragon Age a while ago). You can get a better idea of the kind of data synchronization and transfers that can impact SLI in this Nvidia whitepaper, P.7:

That guide is well known, and mentions that "Nvidia inspector" was only necessary while the game was un-patched.
The game now supports AO, but it doesn't work in 3D mode.
I just tried the "Nvidia inspector" method, and it doesn't appear to do anything, just like enabling AO under "3D settings" in the plain old nvidia control panel, it won't work in 3D. Are you sure its enabled? As sometimes its hard to notice. And as far as these forums go, you are the only one with AO in 3D...

I can't be 100% sure, which is one of the reasons I started the thread. BUT, I'm pretty sure AO is what I'm seeing in game.
I didn't realise you already knew about the guide. If you look back at my first post, I did state that I'm using the 285.79 Beta drivers. The 290 path added AO support so I need to use the inspector method.
Also, I'm running SLI. I think this is part of the key, but just conjecture on my part at this stage.
If someone can tell me a good place to demonstrate whether AO is working, I'll take some more screens and post them here just to help verify if what I'm seeing is AO.

Ok. A good place I thought in in Whiterun, on the door and windows cavities, there is 'more' shadowing than before. Along the hard lined edges of buildings, and 'smudges' pasted to the ground, under grass. Also, tree foliage appears shadowed towards the bottom.... Inside scenes, look for smudging under chairs.
Make sure its a bright day outside to test the best I think.
There is no test like a F5 saved mirror screenshot!
I really hope you do have it, because although by the sounds of this post, you can't notice it, I think it softens the not-so-next-gen geometry and increases realism a lot.

I had to reinstall my drivers and noticed Skyrim was looking really flat.
Went back into Inspector and reconfigured the profile again (using Fallout 3 flag) and straight away, AO is working perfectly in S3D. It makes a huge difference.

Just to bump this, as people in the main thread are saying AO isn't working in S3D.

I have been wanting AO since release, for us non-technically minded folk, what do you do to get AO working?
Im just using the "ENB series 3D Vision fix".

I'll do my best - here's a kind of random assortment of images. I'm quite happy if I'm wrong, it still looks great anyway :-)
