A rated "good" game must be a game that is played with all (or all important) graphics options ON, and it is not the case. I think Oblivion is really "poor".
Correct me if i am wrong, but it is only character shadows that are needed to be disabled no ?? Or is it the shadows on grass?? Or is it the tree shadows ??
My experience with oblivion was fantastic... actually, all this talk is making me want to reinstall it!
Oh, and by the way, there is commonly considered a manditory mod for oblivion called 'OOO" or "oscuro's oblivion overhaul". It is said by all that it is how oblivion should have been. It is awesome.
Here look at this youtube video of the mod very own 'trailer' and see why its manditory.

I think all shadows are at the wrong depth, so it looks better if you turn them all off. But that means you can turn up the eye candy in the other setting really high, and install Qarl's texture pack 3 which increases the texture resolution and clarity by like 3-4 times the original. There's so many good mods out for this game now its really worth picking it up and playing again but this time go crazy with the mods and it makes this game so much better!

The only shadows I turn off are self (even in 2d they are ugly) and the shadows given off by npcs although they are good enough when on. Grass, trees, and whatever else I leave on.
