Why there is no WinXP 3D Stereo driver? Is NVIDIA going to release a 3D Stereo driver for WinXP?
  1 / 3
Yesterday I tried to install the 3D Stereo driver but fail. Is it because I am using WinXP? I found it very strange if it is not support WinXP as Vista is far from usable to me. Anyone know that ss NVIDIA going to release a 3D Stereo driver for WinXP?

Many thanks!

XP is almost a dead OS atm.

Don't expect to see anything for XP after may.

I see so many people are still using WinXP. How come NVIDIA can abandon those customers?

^^ XP is nearing EOL.

Win7 is just around the corner and is set to destroy vista performance wise.

Not to mention MS said they will only support the OS until q2 of this year because of peoples / companies problems with vista when it came out.

Vista is a 'good' OS now, but still is way to bloated to be considered a real upgrade path for people with older hardware. This is why OEMs made the choice to stay with XP for as long as they did, and they are still offering it as an option for those who don't want vista.

XP may not be dead, as I said earlier, but MS is phasing it out in favor of Vista and Win7, and companies like nvidia have to move forward instead of stagnating.

It's a money game, as much as I would like it to be about the end user, what ever makes more profit will come out on top. And right now it's vista support.

Well, that's about as ignorant a reply as I've heard.. You say it's about money and profit... Do you have ANY idea how much more money (profit) nVidia would make if they supported XP also? That's plain stupid. All nVidia is doing is supporting the sales of that crappy Vista OS. The reason $soft is phasing XP out is so they can make more money on their bloated buggy new OS. nVidia supporting XP is not stagnating if they support future OS's also, No reason for them to only support one product at a time. Apparently they are happy with the profits they make now on Vista so they feel there is no reason to offer XP support. XP is the best OS to date, and time will tell if Windows 7 will be any better than Vista. Just like Rock and Roll, XP will never die. Millions still use it and are very happy with it, just like me. It does what I want and does it well. I guess I'll just have to do without 3D, and be happy with what I have. jmho

You just made my point even more clear in your attempt to tear my opinion down.

Nvidia will support the newest OS because they also want to move on with better technology.

If xp had DX10 support from the time DX10 spec was released MS would have issued an update for XP.

Thus, meaning that Vista is the logical path to follow for better and greater visuals.

I don't like vista myself, but I can see why nvidia and others are moving on.

If XP had not have been better than win2k when it came out we would have been having this same discussion back then.

My point is, basically, that for a company to survive and -innovate- new technology has to be implemented.

MS has an aggressive roadmap to follow and this is just the next step down that road.

MS doesn't have to make its customers love them, they just have to keep in front of their competitors and offer a reason to use their OS.

ATM, that reason is DX10 and upcoming DX11.

As I don't have DX10 compliant hardware I see no need to move on. But when the time comes that I do get new hardware I will be using Win7 or whatever else after that.

I am no fanboy, by any means, I just go where my interests are. Just like people will jump from ATI to Nvidia or AMD to Intel when newer, better, faster hardware comes out.

Its the game that these guys play, and their existence depends on it.

To say XP will never die is an absurd statement. Windows 98 was a very stable and solid OS, yet how many people are using it now. There is the forward progression of hardware, and there is the necessary forward progression of software in order to properly utilize that hardware. You say XP does what you want and does it well, but you are already missing out on 3D Stereo. How many more things are you willing to miss out on before you finally decide to upgrade?

It is very irresponsible if NVIDIA give up WinXP users by only providing 3D Stereo driver to Vista saw there are still million people out there still sticky with WinXP by their own wills or not. For me, I prefer WinXP much as I don't want to lose 30~40% of daily efficiency just because of the seldomly used DX10 (and in may cases, no visible visual improvement). Also, I can't see any difficulty for NVIDIA to provide the WinXP version of 3D Stereo driver along with the Vista versoin.

I say it is just a "preference" for NVIDIA to serve user better by providing WinXP driver.

The 3D stereo glasses is currently still an enthusiast solution, so the people who purchase this definitely have the disposable income to spend on such hobbies and pursuits. Which then begs the question, why don't they spend the extra to upgrade their operating systems as well? If you fear losing daily efficiency because of Vista, which I think is a non-issue now that SP1 has ironed out nearly all the initial Vista problems (unless if you are using really old software that only works in XP), then why don't you dual boot like I do and run Vista for gaming in 3D and XP for all your other needs? Just remember that XP is still essentially an 8 year old operating system. When was the last time you saw anyone using Windows 95 8 years after its release (in 2003)? And although the games still look the same, the driver framework that allows the GPU to render those games is different for either operating system (thats why there are separate XP and Vista versions of the same display driver), so perhaps the way NVIDIA is implementing 3D stereo now just won't work or work extremely inefficiently in XP.

XP is NOT dead by any means. I still use win Xp X64 and find it strange that Nvidia doesn't support it since it's the most widely used OS at this time. Luckily I use the iz3d solution which supports win XP.

XP is not dead until they stop making new games for it. Tombraider Underworld just came out
and it runs on XP/Vista.

Let's get back to the original issue.

e-ghost, what video card do you have?

XP has stereo drivers all the way up to 162.50 or more and many games work great under it.
I use 162.15.

I'm OK with you iondrive about the 3D stereo version 162.15 and 162.50. But this drivers doesn't work with geforce serie 9 or better. So what is the solution for the gamers that want to play 3D stereo on XP with video card 9600, 9800, GTX 260, GTX280, GTX 285 and GTX 295 ?

I wrote this topic to talk about that but I haven't answer for the moment :

As far as "No XP drivers" goes:

XP is EOL in a couple months. MS is abandoning it, why would anyone else develop new tech for it?

Sometimes you just have to move on if you want the latest software and hardware, spending time and money developing for EOL OS's dwindling markets is bad business.
