Hi all,
I have made a fix for Risen which fixes the skybox, halos in almost everything and shadows.
The game is a bit old now, but with the fix it still looks very good in 3D.
Thanks to Bo3b for his shaderhacking school.
Download and screenshots are available on github https://github.com/mx-2/3d-fix

I finished the game without shadows too and it was a fantastic game, thanks for the fix!

Thanks a lot mate - I will def. buy it NeXT time it's on sale...
I have Risen 2: Dark Waters thoug, thought it was worth tryin, but as expectet it was a no go :/
Would you consider fixing that too ?
It's more or less the same issues - shadows and perhaps some lights (Bloom), skybox is ok in this one..

You can fix the shadows by reducing convergence to one. If the stars at night are still too close, reduce convergence further. The only effect that has to be disabled are water reflections.
After adjusting this during my playthrough, I have seen no problems with lights. Do you have an example for this problem?
Maybe I'll look at this if I have some time in some weeks.

3 pics posted, it's from the start of the game, it's night - haven't any daylight Pictures yet..
I love high convergence in 3person games - so if I have to chose between shadows and convergence - I'll chose convergence anytime ( but sure I'd prefer both )
Pics
1. Skybox at night - I can't see any issues at all, uses borderland profile.
2. Water at night - no problems, I don't no if daylight causes any, but most times it can be solved with the profiles..
3. Ligt reflections on walls are wrong - they are rendered in mono, I think...
I will be very gratefull if you can find some time to look at it :)

Risen 2 worked pretty well with compatibility mode, at least at the beginning of the game. I hope we get a patch at some point, but it's a decent substitute.

Awesome! Thanks for fixing this game. I see from your comments in the shaders that you found one of the most enjoyable parts of shaderhacking- when you magically get something to work.
Very happy that the shaderhacking school was helpful.
Would you be willing to post the fix on HelixModBlog? We like to keep all the fixes there as the first place to look. If so, send me a PM with your preferred email address, and I'll send you an invite to be an author.

I'd like to have my fix on the Helixmod page but I found no sumbit patch or login button there.
How will posting to the Helixmod blog work if I'd be an author?

If you are setup as an author, you can create new blog pages. You'd create a page similar to the prior ones, with example pictures, and the zip file stored off the AWS/FTP that eqzitara hosts. (keeps them all in one backed-up spot)

Update: Shadows are now working with any convergence
@bo3b
It seems that there is another "prime directive" for shadows/PixelShaders:
pos.x += sep * (1 - c * conv / depth)
where c is a constant that has to be found by trial and error.
Edit: Torch shadows still cause problems at high convergence.
Edit2: The next post is for linking to Helixmod blog.

Installation:

Configuration:
This fix has two presets for the HUD settings which can be selected with the numpad 9 and 3 keys. Preset 1 is the default after start. Preset 2 moves the HUD to higher depth and stretches it in X direction for better readability. The depths and amount of stretching can be configured with the Const1 and Const2 values in DX90Settings.ini.
Known issues:
- Loading screens have red bars on the left and right side.
- Torch shadows are disabled - this should not be too bad as only the players torch casts shadows at all.
Changelog:
- v1.2: Disabled torch shadow due to problems at high convergence, updated screenshots
- v1.1: Shadows are now working with any convergence
- v1.0: initial release
