I'd promised some folks pics of Descent 3 in Stereo 3D on my Mits DLP using Forceware 91.47 (w/modified .xml profile from Forceware 163.75) and Stereo Driver 91.47. Images are in 1824 x 1036, the resolution I use due to DLP overscan.

does the old school driver run open gl? or is it only DX?
The old driver has OpenGL support. Have you seen my Doom 3 screens on the forum?
I ran Descent using Directx, because it works better in that game than Opengl. Though in most games that have the option of both, OpenGL is generally better in 3D, cleaner, less you have to do to get it to work correctly.

dude thanks again. its interesting on my modern current machine opengl works better than direct x for descent 3. After asking the question i dug up old documentation from nvidia on the drivers that answered my question about opengl support. Man i miss the old days, much more freedom with the old drivers. Shoot, it says it even supports 120hrz 3d! Hello 720p 3d projectors and DLP link!
I even found a cool glide wrapper that converts glide games to DX9! http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide it works great for d3 on my modern system but failed to give me 3d. actually it activated the emmitter but failed to use the 3d depth and convergence, but it mite work for other games with the legacy harware and drivers. its a nice wrapper. the best i have tried so far.
Im going to try out the dual boot xp with a 7950 card like you suggested with the Mits dlp and dlp link glasses. Do you think there would be any point to SLI it or use the SLI on one card version of the 7950? I searched and found very little information on legacy 3d SLI support.
If its ok, ill PM you for the registry hack whenever i get the hardware and software built up. I found allot a info on the web, but its nice to get the first had experience from you. if it all works i might build a legacy rig hooked up to a 3d projector. 720p will probably be better with such a low end card. i like insane FPS in D3 multilayer- its not your typical ground pounder FPS- more like a feeding frenzy.
How does the game look in 3d? any issues?
thanks again for the ideas, im really looking forward to this.

Hi Daniel, I'll have to give that glide wrapper a try. If it works good, I might have to completely and totally archive 3 old 3DFX computers: 1) w/3dfx Voodoo 1, 2) w/Voodoo 2 SLI (the original SLI!!), and 3) Voodoo 5. Yes, yes, I like maximum coverage/compatibility!
Oh and Get a 7900 GTX, not the 7950 GT. Compare the benchmarks and the card clock speeds/memory speeds. The 7900 GTX is hands down the fasted single GPU card of the 7 series. The only card that is faster is the 7950 GX2, but not in 3D. I own all 3 and have compared all 3. Get the 7900 GTX unless you already own a 7950, then don't bother, but if you have your choice and before you buy get the 7900 GTX.
As far as SLI goes, well just how extreme are you? /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> If you are anything like me, and judging by your 3D Vision setup we obviously think alike, you would get SLI. BUT, be aware that you're only going to get about 5-10 frames per second difference in Doom 3. In Descent 3 it won't matter, because that game will never come close to pushing a single 7900 GTX in 3D. If you DO go SLI, also be AWARE that modern SLI certified motherboards will NOT be detected as such by old school drivers. If you go the extreme route, get Nforce 590 sli with both slots x16_1, fully x16. For example my motherboard the Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe is such a board. As far as Ram goes, don't bother getting more than 3 Gig because you will be running 32-bit Windows, and anything above that won't be detected. I'm sure you already know these things though. Don't hesitate to contact me.
As far as Descent 3 LOOKS in 3D, it looks as good as 3D vision. The quality is all there. Let me know how it goes, and PM me whenever you need a tip. I have hundreds of old games on my 7900 GTX SLI rig that run in 3D.

BTW-the 7950 GX2 is a little more buggier in 3D than the 7900 GTX. I recommend you either run one 7900 GTX or if you SLI, SLI a single gpu card. The QUAD SLI and SLI on a card isn't mature enough in the 91.47 drivers (which are the best drivers quality wise in my opinion). I also use the .xml profile from the 163.75 drivers to get a few more games compatibility, for instance Prey (which wasn't released upon the inception of 91.47), which is slow with the 91.47 .xml and faster with the 163.75 .xml where it gets a true nvidia profile. You won't be able to use the 163.75 drivers straight up because you will be using a digital display and Nvidia blocked certain displays starting with those drivers via the EDID and the pin mod to the DVI cable will just give you a black screen (I've tried). Believe me I've tried all various solutions and the 91.47 are the best that you'll be able to use with your DLP display. The only folks that can run the 160 series drivers w/3D are CRT users (using the VGA pin mod) or Zalman users (no mod needed). Zalman is a good display, but they are both a step down to a DLP, so the added value of the 160 driver series isn't much anyways: it fixes a few games and breaks others.

Thanks Photios for the good advise. You just saved me allot of time and money :) Im building this machine for just one game, and thats Descent 3. its funny after all these years its the only game I play consistently. something about 6 degrees of freedom that just does it for me i guess.
Im going to test it all out dual boot, and if i like it then ill build the dedicated box. its kinda fun researching all this old stuff.

No problem, but be aware that since you are crossing the Rubicon, that you will NOT be building this for one game. That is the intention now, but that will not be the end result. Ya see, like you, I built this computer to play one game: Doom 3. And the project dove tailed into playing and running ALL sorts of old games in both widescreen 16:9 AND 3D.
Descent 3 just got A LOT more exciting now. 6 DOF and 3D. What kind of controls do you use or do you think are the most optimal for Descent 3?

haha you are probably right! im sure ill fill it up with lots of games. I would love to play doom 3 also! with the state of current games this might be the best way to go anyway. at least back then most games were not consul ports.
For d3 i use a joystick. i prefer the MS sidewinder precision pro. it allows for some very creative tricording. its hard to believe but there are quite a few old die hards still mixing it up in the mines! we use a program called Vortex to show the current servers. But man some of these guys can really fly. its usually a good A@@ whippin for me :) but hey, it probably is not as much fun to be the best anyway.

I'm a big fan of the Descent franchise myself and would love to have my DLP working with this game. I got an old machine with a 7900GTS collecting dust that might work. What is the OS that you use for D3 3D? XP or Vista? I think I might have it on Vista but it can be restored to the original XP if need be. If you don't mind, please send the registry hack for DLP compatibility. Thanks in advance. BTW, could you get D1 and D2 running in 3D as well?

Daniel,
I have Descent 3 installed per the way they did here which includes Vortex: http://www.dateiliste.com/en/descent-3/26-descent-3-installation-updates-and-modifications/120-download-the-full-version-of-descent-3.html
Perhaps we should try and hook up sometime and play, I'd love to give it a shot. I have an old Sidewinder Forcefeedback 2 USB which is functionally the same as that Precision Pro w/the added feature of forcefeedback, so I think I'll have to give that a try in Descent 3. I remember when I used to play Descent 3, I had tried mouse and keyboard but didn't like that much. I remember playing with a joystick back in the Descent 1 and 2 days.
When you get to Doom 3, someday, give me a shout on that one too, I use a custom .cfg file for best 3D results.

You will need Windows XP 32 Bit. 91.47 does not work with Windows Vista 32 Bit (or at least I haven't figured or tryed to make it work, XP is better for older games anyways, and if you have EAX capable sound card you won't have to monkey around with Alchemy like we do for Vista and 7).
Here is how the Registry Hack works for DLP owners:
1) dowload this registry patch: http://www.3d-hdv.net/forum/3D_DLP.zip unzip and place it on your desktop (or anywhere else)
1a) Make sure that you use the old Nvidia control panel, the new control panel with the 90 series drivers doesn't give access to Stereo options. You can access the old control panel by selecting it in the top down menu in the new control panel (or use a registry hack)
2) activate your stereodriver in control panel using either vertical interleave (Seereal)
3) Be sure to set your screen size correctly in the stereo driver control panel, dig through the options
3a) Save settings and exit Nvidia control panel
4) apply registry patch, choose left or right first according to your TV setup
5) Play your game.
Note: This is very important. Each time you open Nvidia control panel the interleaving settings will be reset to their defaults: usually "DDC VGA Glasses". You will have to re-select Seereal. Apply and exit. And then reapply the registry hack. This is why I keep the registry patch or link to it on my desktop.
PM me if you have any issues.
You can get Descent 1 and 2 to work using Descent Rebirth which supports OpenGL. You can run either of those games using the old Nvidia stereo driver or 3D Vision using GLDirect 5.02. Descent 3 on the other hand will not work with GLDirect using it's opengl renderer. The best way to play Descent 3 is using the Directx 6.1 renderer and the old Nvidia driver. I didn't have any success getting OpenGL and Descent 3 working properly with 91.47 stereo driver. It'll either crash-to-desktop, BSOD, or display no textures (white walls). Directx 6.1 renderer is the way to go and works great.
Thanks to the good people at MTBS3D.com for making this all happen.

does the old school driver run open gl? or is it only DX?
The old driver has OpenGL support. Have you seen my Doom 3 screens on the forum?
I ran Descent using Directx, because it works better in that game than Opengl. Though in most games that have the option of both, OpenGL is generally better in 3D, cleaner, less you have to do to get it to work correctly.

How does the game look in 3d? any issues?
thanks again for the ideas, im really looking forward to this.

dude thanks again. its interesting on my modern current machine opengl works better than direct x for descent 3. After asking the question i dug up old documentation from nvidia on the drivers that answered my question about opengl support. Man i miss the old days, much more freedom with the old drivers. Shoot, it says it even supports 120hrz 3d! Hello 720p 3d projectors and DLP link!

As far as Descent 3 LOOKS in 3D, it looks as good as 3D vision. The quality is all there. Let me know how it goes, and PM me whenever you need a tip. I have hundreds of old games on my 7900 GTX SLI rig that run in 3D.

Kinda regards!

For d3 i use a joystick. i prefer the MS sidewinder precision pro. it allows for some very creative tricording. its hard to believe but there are quite a few old die hards still mixing it up in the mines! we use a program called Vortex to show the current servers. But man some of these guys can really fly. its usually a good A@@ whippin for me :) but hey, it probably is not as much fun to be the best anyway.

I'd promised some folks some pics Descent 3 in Stereo 3D on DLP using Forceware 91.47 (w/modified .xml profile from Forceware 162.50) and Stereo Driver 91.47. Images are in 1824 x 1036, the resolution I use due to DLP overscan.
System Specs:
TV: Mitsubishi WD-60C9

haha you are probably right! im sure ill fill it up with lots of games.

Daniel,
I have Descent 3 installed per the way they did here which includes Vortex: http://www.dateiliste.com/en/descent-3/26-descent-3-installation-updates-and-modifications/120-download-the-full-version-of-descent-3.html

System:
Intel I7 920 overclocked to 4ghz
Asus Rampage Extreme II
2 Ge-force 480 in SLI
GTX 295 PhysX Card
12gb ddr3 2000mhz ram
Intel SSD in RAID 0
BR RW
1000w Sony surround sound
NVIDIA 3D Vision
3d displays tested:
Mitsubishi 65" DLP 3d HDTV (good old 1080p checkerboard since 2007!!!)
Panasonic VT25 (nice 2d but I returned it due to cross talk)
Acer H5360 720p on 130" screen (the best 3d)
23" Acer LCD monitor (horrible cross talk- sold it)
Samsung 65D8000
I'm a big fan of the Descent franchise myself and would love to have my DLP working with this game. I got an old machine with a 7900GTS collecting dust that might work. What is the OS that you use for D3 3D? XP or Vista? I think I might have it on Vista but it can be restored to the original XP if need be. If you don't mind, please send the registry hack for DLP compatibility. Thanks in advance. BTW, could you get D1 and D2 running in 3D as well?
