I go to kotaku every once in awhile for gaming news, usually I see sensationalist articles about sexism and things like 3D being dead, those are the reasons I don't bother going there nearly as much as I used to but today I read this article, which to me anyway has to be one of the best I've ever read and has me hoping that some how the Oculus Rift could work for someone like this the way the 3ds did.

There was a link of the day article on Blue's recently that reported a man went and watched a 3D movie in the theaters, and walked out no longer stereo blind at all. He was in his 40's I believe.

Its kind of ironic, people who didnt try 3d vision think its terrible but haven't tried it.
People think oculus rift is amazing but haven't tried it.
Some people who thought 3d vision was terrible but havent tried it now thinks it could be cool because of oculus rift, but still havent tried it.
The comments in anything related to 3D as of last three months make me want to strangle someone.
Next time I go to a restaurant I will ask the person at another table if his meal is good and if he says yes, then instead of eating at restaurant I will leave. Then tell everyone it was an awesome meal... cause that makes sense.

Yeah I don't usually read the comments much anymore. I left one ... but it's nowhere to be found but there was a comment about the 3D camera in the 3ds and using it as a window into the real world. I hadn't even thought of that, I wonder if the guy has.
I really wonder if the Rift would work for this guy out of the box, or if something would have to be done ... like adding a slight amount of divergence.

Im curious as well, but i doubt it. Image overlapping and stuff, may involve modding but rift uses a lot of software so hardware modding is probably out of question. I could be wrong though.

The comments on that article are surprisingly good for a 3D article. There are the usual morons and people who get headaches and therefore think no one else should enjoy it either, but the overall tone is surprisingly positive. Of course you'd have to be the worlds biggest douche to tell a guy who just saw 3D for the first time that it was a fad, and stupid, and gives you headaches, and doesn't add to the experience.
I commented there also, and suggested that he try 3D Vision or a 3D TV. If he can see it up close, a 3D Vision monitor up close should work too.
Not sure Oculus would work. He has a sort of built in convergence. Anything past the convergence point is blurry/inverted. Oculus put the focal point at infinity for relaxed normal eyes, and if he focuses there, he'll get double vision.
They could presumably slide the images horizontally though, applying a default anti-convergence for him that might allow a line up at distance. He could do the same thing with 3D Vision, like looking at a photo and slide the axes further out. Look like hell to us, but would match his convergence.
Not sure, but it's quite a story.
There is also this news about using 3D to successfully treat lazy eye:

It seems like we are trading 3d hate with 3d ignorance though. Sounds pretty elitist I guess but I have no problem with someone who puts on a pair of glasses/ rift speaking but these people who are just spouting stuff really bugs me. Its like less then a like a 1000 people have tried/owned a rift but everyone "knows" its awesome and they "know" this "game" works and all future games will work. No mention of it actually not working, no mention of issues, no mention of issues because it doesnt support head tracking[so it needs to use mouse].
Just youtube cymatic bruce, he records the dev kit renderer games on youtube. And you should be able to tell lots of shit is broken, but tbh its a dev kit and games can improve. But NOOOOPE the comments say how awesome it is and they can't wait to play it. Then all of a sudden there is an article about how a youtuber is showing how awesome this game is on the rift.
Now everyone thinks the dev kit is a consumer product... which it isnt. People are more excited about games which dont look to render well and have issues then games actually built for the rift like The Galleryhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry3w3s_CXcM&feature=player_embedded which already looks amazing.
End rant.

Yeah I agree, all the slavish drooling over it is a bit amusing, and all the tards (not a term I use often, but here I think it's appropriate) jumping on the devkit bandwagon to play games that have tacked on official support at best and more than likely none. And they will also be the first people bitching about the consumer product being so much better than theirs and they shouldn't have to pay as much to get one (lol).
They really should drop their internal renderer and include 3D vision into one version of the product, I can't think of a reason why they couldn't. They we get an actual shit hot must own product.

I agree too. The amount of positive press and impressions that Rift is getting is downright amusing. I'm a Kickstarter backer as well, and I'm guessing I should get the kit in another week or so. So, I'm inclined to be charitable, but geez, it's weird how tribal everyone is. Gotta be on the right team, no matter what. If it's time to hate on 3D, everyone is on board, if it's time to praise Rift, everyone is on board.
It's going to be fun, but I've always thought it would be unlikely to be that stunning for regular games. Having said that, I do expect to try out some regular games and see if it's good enough. As an NVidia user, I've been conditioned to lower my quality expectations a fair amount and still have it be playable.
I also wonder if the good press doesn't stem from the stereoscopic image itself. Most of the people I've seen giving truly jaw dropped looks are exactly the people who are too hip to play stereoscopic. If you've never seen it for real, it's incredible, of course.
I guess at the end of the day, I'd rather have ignorance instead of hate. :->

Unfortunately, ignorance quickly shifts to hate. We all saw it with 3D in general, for awhile 3D was all the buzz and then it took a nosedive. People complaining about headaches, probably never even having one themselves. People complaining it doesn't add to the game or it's not game 'changing' enough. Clearly they never played the 'bridge' part of Dishonored ... on numerous occasions I felt that in the pit of my stomach feeling with this game. Great stuff.
Take 3D Vision for example, too many people that own it and have tried it are too ignorant to have even looked beyond what was supplied to them. At best just moving the slider from 15% to 100% and never digging any deeper into the options, it's sad really.
