£1,100 on 1080 gpu + 4k UHD 3d tv.
to find out I can only play @ 720p blur mess @ 60hz....
Not amused one bit.
One day I hope Nvidia would sort it out, instead of pumping out the next best thing.
Next Nvidia gpu will have BMAA, supports res of 50000000 X 256000 @ 60000000hz
BAA is short for Blind mans AA, all you have to do to activate it, is to just close your eyes and imagine.........

Not only Nvidia but to other manufactures.
$250 My first 3d vision KIt in 2009. Never was able to use it didn't have a 3d monitor.
$300 Geforce 560TI been using Nvidia excluvily due to 3D vision since for no other reason.
$1500 Bought Samsung 3d TV
$100 worth of additional glasses
$40 for Nvidia 3D TV Play
$1500 Another Samsung 3D TV
$400 Asus 3D Monitor with built in emitter and had glasses
$500 One of my Tv went bad so and had warranty paid extra for a new Samsung 3D TV
$150 Bought a second 3D vision 2 set
$1800 LG 4k 3D TV
$699 for Geforce 1080 TI
I'm not counting the game I've bought because of the fixes that otherwise I would not have bought or tried, or the donations I've made to the different shaderhackers.
I think this is the most I've spent money I've spent on any given thing besides food.
2009: After buying my first good PC (debatable. I bought a Core 2 Duo), I read about the first 3D 1680x1050 Samsung monitors. I was intrigued, but I had just bought a 1920x1080 monitor (that reached 76Hz).
2011 or 2012 (I don't remember): my parents bought the 3DS for my brother. I bought some games too. Woah! 3D is great! I wish I could have it for PC.
2013: I bought my next PC (which I had until recently). No money for a monitor this time. 250€ for the GTX 760.
2014: time to buy a high refresh rate monitor. The BenQ XL2411Z (279€). I had been looking at the 3D Vision 2 kit, wondering if I would like it. It was almost never on stock in the store I bought it. But this time, when I bought the monitor, there was stock! And cheaper than before (125€)! And free shipping thanks to the monitor! So I bought it.
Tried a few games, but there were broken effects in some games I tried to play (I couldn't know how to describe them at that time). I discovered Helixmod day 1, but those games didn't have a fix, so I was more fond of 2D 120Hz.
Half a year later, I began trying more games. Dark Souls sold me on 3D like no other game. Then I couldn't stop playing in 3D, and to this date I can count with one hand the number of polygonal games that I played in 2D (that were available in 3D).
2015: in September-October, I started fixing games. I stumbled upon the first game that I HAD to play in 3D (Dark Souls 2 SOTFS), but it didn't have a fix. It was time to start learning.
2016: my GPU was limiting me a lot, so thanks to the job I got in 2015, I bought the GTX 1080 (749€. Damn too much, but it arrived just in time for a 2 week vacation, and I played The Witcher 3 all that time). One or two months before that, I bought the Dell S2716DG (495.71€).
2017: I bought a second 3D Vision 2 kit (150€, I think). Just in case, and to have a second pair of glasses to play with friends. Also, new PC (except for the GPU and storage) two months later.
Oh man... That is PASSION right there!
Related to your Dark Souls 2 fix... Is exactly the same method that I used to fix Dark Souls 3 - to a way bigger degree, "Thank you Tile Lighting!"
(and some of it goes to Mass Effect: Andromeda as well!)
Pure awesome stuff there! Figuring that one out! I can't even imagine the "effort & frustration" finding that formula OUT!
I would like to use this post to THANK YOU once again for that and all your passion and spent time for us ("Furtive Pygmies" who are filled by Dark Souls and enjoy seeing the world in Stereo 3D with our both eyes!) ^_-
PS:
If you don't get the refference to the Furtive Pygmy:

That timeline should be the normal reaction for anyone that tries proper 3D :) (minus the fixing part. Not everyone has time at home for that).

Aw, man. It took a full week, 4-5 hours a day (more on the weekend) of trial and error until I found out how to fix it. It was too much difficulty for a first fix. Lighting and shadows had a slightly different method, but once I found one (shadows came first. What a joy when I saw them glued to the surface), the other was quick. After that, some other games needed the exact same formula (Skyrim SE), so instead of spending a week on shadows it was one minute.
I should try to replicate it or something similar for DX9 games. There's a specular reflections shader in Dragon's Dogma that behaves the same as Dark Souls 2 SOTFS did. And I still find fixing shadows difficult in DX9 (Tales of Zestiria). There are less and less new DX9 titles over time, though.

I still have a lot to learn to reach the level of the high end fixers (like you). Most of what I learned is based on trial and error and copy-pasting formulas I discovered in previous fixes, while I still don't understand all concepts (like what all the coordinate types mean. I get it when I read it, but then I forget quickly).

I wouldn't have spent much lately if if it wasn't for the fixes provided by the Great Hackers in this forum.

Only recently got into 3dvision gaming - but now I'm locked into buying Nvidia cards, whereas I previously had no allegiance and purchased based purely on best price/performance ratio.
Now I check daily for 1070/1080 deals for a more satisfying 1080p 3d gaming experience - I have a house and kids to pay for, so struggle to justify my entertainment purchases to myself.
The Furtive Pygmy is fully aware that the final Dark Souls expansion, though looking spectacular in 3d, makes my old 760 chug.

I've lost track of how much money i've spent on pc tech so i'll just list the 3d display tech i've owned:
1990 - Sega 3D Glasses: lol this probably shouldn't count, but this is what started that itch..
1999 - Elsa wired Revelator 3D glasses: first taste of 3D on a pc.
2009 - 3dVision 1 kit + Acer 5360 projector
2011 - 3dVision 2 kit
2013 - Oculus DK1: ebayed pretty quickly since it was a blurry mess because of my narrow (54mm) IPD.
2014 - Optoma HD26 with Edid override from Acer 5360
2014 - Oculus DK2: physically modded for my ipd, also hacked the drivers to offset the IPD in software.
2016 - HTC Vive
I'm a developer so I've justified most of these as "business" purchases ;). I also recently started working on a few 3d fixes for games in my spare time.

You guys have great memory, because I don't remember most of the exact prices nor the years I bought hardware.
Played my first stereo 3D game (AVP Alien vs Predator) with anaglyph paper glasses with a ATI 4870x2 (only time I'm close to some kind of SLI) and I fell in love with S3D gaming. I always loved S3D, I experienced anything that have anaglyph S3D I can reach; books, magazines, movies, TV Shows, etc.
Then bought a Acer GD245HQ and a GTX480, in first year GPU died because of overheating. RMA it with a GTX580. Played some games in S3D over the years with the monitor but I hated the monitor, because it was too dark. After 2-3 months purchasing the Acer, 3D Vision 2 (brighter) Monitors anounced, I was furious and couldn't afford a new 3D monitor. I stopped playing games in S3D, there were exceptions.
Returned to S3D gaming after purchasing a LG 47LW5500 3DTV, 3D image was beautiful, bright, colorful and more eye friendly. Only issue is large pixels and visible lines of FPR filter in 3D. But finally I was enjoying S3D as I've always wanted. Also purchased a Tridef license, was using both 3DV and Tridef.
For years I couldn't afford a new GPU, so I mostly played old games with my 580. I played only a handful of new games in 2D that I love and I couldn't postpone.
My later and last purchase was a GTX980 and with this GPU I started playing S3D games like crazy, because I had crazy amount of backlog games in my Steam library which are power hungry. For few months continue to play on LG TV, then bought a BenQ XL2720Z.
BenQ was nice resolution wise but image quality was still underwhelming after a passive 3D experience. So few months ago finally I was able to purchase a LG 55UH850V 4K 3DTV and it was a mind blowing experience for me. Resolution, pixel density, color quality, FPR filter visibility, lag values, etc are just as I wanted. I always loved the S3D gaming so much, but this was the peak point for me. I can never go back to playing in 2D and to use a 1080p 3DV monitor.
Currently I can't afford a new GPU or a system, but in future my plan is to build a new PC with a 1440p 3D monitor. 4K TV will be the main 3D viewer, but for power hungry and problematic games that won't allow upscaling will use the monitor.
Edit: Forgot to add, I have both 3DV1 and 3DV2 kits and I hate both glasses lol. Both of them are painful experiences (3DV2 one is a little better, but still...) with big headphones. I really want to meet the designer of the glasses to see how small his/her head is.

I am sure I am missing some stuff in there. For sure not included all the other PC upgrades along the way. Everything I buy revolves around Nvidia 3d vision or 3dtv play. Its the only way I will play a game, I refuse to play anything in 2d. If not for helix and the shaderhackers in this community I would probably have stopped playing most games. I do not even want to put dollar figures on all of that equipment, you all know how much these things cost.
But yeah, to answer your question. The only thing that ties me to NVidia is 3DV. I certainly do not need them for 4k Netflix, I can use onboard intel graphics for that, probably actually have it work right to.

I don't have a very memorable history. Aside from the occasional 3D movie and such, after buying the Nintendo 3DS, I really wanted to delve into more 3D gaming. I just thought it was so cool to get that extra layer of depth. After being in a somewhat bad place mentally, I made the decision to splurge on getting a high refresh rate monitor and a 3D Vision v2 kit. It was simply incredible to see it for the first time, and then to find the community on here still chugging along!
I later made the decision to build a computer for the first time (as I was running this off the family computer), keeping 3D in mind. This would lead to my mother forcing me to buy another pair of 3D glasses so that she could watch me play, since she also thought it was pretty cool.
After moving out, I ended up buying a 3D TV and a bunch of 3D movies. I now host 3D movie/game nights with my family and friends. So, I really like 3D.

I use 3DVision only to play video games in real 3D ( 3DVision / TriDef / iZ3D ), never with the Compatibility / Power / Crysis like / Z buffer 3D. (I can't bear texture stretching and 3D is to low for me, it's 100% or nothing.)
I can't do the math though, sorry.
However, I don't use my several 3DTV to play (55ES7000/55EF950V/75H6400), only for 3D movies (I've seen them almost all from BluRay 3D and/or Theater, even fishes movies):

Not amused one bit.

I'm not counting the game I've bought because of the fixes that otherwise I would not have bought or tried, or the donations I've made to the different shaderhackers.
I think this is the most I've spent money I've spent on any given thing besides food.

2014 - Oculus DK2: physically modded for my ipd, also hacked the drivers to offset the IPD in software.

I'm a developer so I've justified most of these as "business" purchases ;). I also recently started working on a few 3d fixes for games in my spare time.
