3D Vision support on HMDs !!?
  1 / 2
Hey guys I have just been wondering. There seems to be a few projects going on concerning HMDs for example the Oculus Rift. I just haven't heard about any 3d vision support. Does anyone know whether there will be support for 3d vison or not? Or will it be just a tweak or personalized profiles for these hardware? What do you guys think? I mean it would suck if it just worked with a very limited amount of games. It should support side by side with no problem. I would love to loose these outdated 3d vison glasses shit. It feels like there needs to be an update from nvidia. They need to come out with some new and improved technologies that will increase the market size.

The Sony HMZ headsets are supported. The rift is not (and probably won't be).

Hi Does anyone know if the Totem kickstarter would be 3d vision compatible. Its interesting as its advertised to work with multiple platforms incl pc, ps3, ps4, xbox, tablet etc. If 3d vision would work - that would be interesting! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2091603040/totem-the-premium-full-featured-virtual-reality-he

No extra fiddling, Plug n play, whether its 2d or 3d gaming, desktop usage or movie watching. Its trying to simulate projector and screen around 100-150"(45% view-fov) and not even trying to be a vr device. Not that simple with the oculus, it requires a proper sofware level support to correct image and use headtracking, and probably very in-depth look at every game it supports. in-game fov has to match or slightly exceed rifts viewangle fov, headtracking needs to be spot on etc... Just thinking outloud, i do hope we get nvidia behind oculus, but now im with Pirate and dont think we'll get oculus support anytime soon.

I guess what we need is an Nvidia HMD. Why are they not doing this? I would just love 3d with no ghosting, high convergence, brightness. I have 3d vision 2 but I think that the technology can definitely be improved with a Nvidia HMD that supports multiple resolutions and not only 1080p

I posted on totem kickstarter - and someone replied that Nvidia 3dtv play will probably work for 3d vision games but the resolution is only 1280x720 x 60fps. So you may be able to play 3d vision games on the totem hmd but not at full resolution. I am interested in totem - it works out as £280 + delivery + customs (based on 495 Canadian dollar option).

Don't buy into the Totem. Or any VR headset yet, for that matter. Unless you're a developer actively working on VR experiences, you're throwing money away. Wait for a consumer VR solution to become established before dropping any cash.

VR needs to be designed for. These tacked on games have unpleasant locomotion issues. If you're not a developer or sim racer, DK2 is severely lacking. All cockpit games naturally translate to VR, but flight/space definitely need another resolution bump since they are so reliant on text/identifying and dogfighting with ships on the horizon. And yeah, the difference between Sony's HMD and VR is there is distortion involved to get the necessarily high FOV. Since the HMZ is only simulating a 24 inch monitor from 2 feet away (45 degree FOV), it can get by with simple optics that don't need to correct for distortion.

LCD panels are still slow and lame like always, and that causes the ghosting. Even the ULMB style LCDs are still prone to this. For brightness, you can make a projector bright in a couple of ways. First, make the screen smaller and sit closer so it still fills your field of view. The same amount of light leaves the projector no matter the size of the screen, so smaller makes it brighter. Second, use a high-gain screen. I find my H5360 is actually too bright a lot of the times (drapes on windows, nothing heroic), but apparently my eyes are better than most. I find the VG248QE to be comically overbright to the point of unusable. Not sure what people are looking for here, bright in a bright room? When I adjust ingame sliders for gamma, I never have any trouble getting a great picture, even with 3D glasses on. People always worry about resolution for 720p, and I did too, before I used the projector. 2x 720p (cuz 120Hz) makes for a terrific 3D experience, and I never notice the pixels when in 3D. The Sony HMD displays are going to be second best (maybe first best) for ghosting and convergence and brightness because they use two OLED screens, one for each eye, so slow LCDs don't impact it. The current VR setups are also this way, with half a screen for each eye, but the resolution is pathetic, because they stretch that half-720p image over a wider field of view. This is going to take at least a year to get better, maybe longer.

I Am just so happy to read this =) "Before VR there were a number of 3D technologies, such as our own 3D Vision. Fundamentally, the rendering technologies of 3D Vision and VR are extremely similar: 2 slightly different images displayed in such a way to create a 3D dimensional effect. Realizing this, we have developed Auto Stereo, which will convert 3D Vision-compatible games into VR experiences, with mouse and keyboard commands mapped to VR inputs like head movement, similar to Gamepad Mapper on NVIDIA SHIELD devices, which maps touch and motion inputs to physical controls. Auto Stereo will be delivered automatically through GeForce Experience."

Hopefully we start getting some nitty gritty details soon.
