What Zalman monitors work with Nvidia Old School 3D stereo?
Guys,
Need a little bit of help from you old school stereo gamers. I'm looking to do some OpenGL Doom 3 [engine] gaming. For this type of setup I already have built a Core 2 Duo 3.2 Ghz, Nvidia 7950 GX2, 2 Gb of ram, and Windows XP 32-bit. Right now, it has the Forceware 163.71 and Stereo 162.50 with registry hacks to see the old control panel to enable stereo. The next thing I need to figure out is the display, and Im not very interested in hunting down a good CRT (nor do I have one any longer). What about the Zalman monitors? Do they work with this older stereo setup? I'm considering the ZM-M220W or possibly the new ZM-M215W or ZM-M240W (would the old drivers still work with the newer models?).

One final note: I have a Mitsu C9 series 60 Inch DLP for 3D vision on my big rig, but I don't believe I could use that display under the old school stereo method. If I'm wrong, and you know of a configuration that isn't anaglyph, let me know.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Old-school supports the zalman which makes this display the most compatible device as is today (or par on with a dual projection rig since newer nvidiasteredrivers won't support zalman anymore. :( )
Using the 91.31+91.31stereo you probably need to deactivate one of your cpu-cores to make it work. I don't think sli will work either (not 100% sure) so deactivate one of the cores in the 7950gx2.
Using the 162.50stereo+for instance 169.21 displaydriver you may need to do the pinmod (check mtbs3d.com. There should be several threads about it) for the display to be recognized as a 3d-capable display. If anaglyph option only is shown you need the pinmod. Dual cpu-cores can be used but probably not sli.

What kind of stereosignals do your zubitchi accept? I can't run the old school drivers anymore due a fried 7900 but i'm hunting down a functional used one. I get back if i get info again.

In regards to the 91.31 combo, what is the reasoning behind deactivating one of the cpu-cores? Will it crash if you don't? With regards to sli for the 7950gx2, it says on both the forceware and the 3d stereo driver for the 91.31 that sli is supported and that the 7950 gx2 is supported. So, I guess I'll find out when I give it a shot.

For the 162.50 stereo + 16X.XX forceware, I'll have to look into the pinmod on the dvi cable. But as of right now, it is hooked up to the Mitsu DLP and it only gives me anaglyph as an option, in fact you don't even have an option to select from the pull down menu in the nvidia properties for stereo type. I can't see why sli wouldn't work, if it is supposed to work on the 91.31 drivers (another avenue to explore). But it sounds to me like I should just use the 91.31 combo and skip doing the pinmod to a good dvi cable since I'm not going to use this machine to play any new games. There may not be any added value to using a 16X.XX driver over the 91.31 drivers. If anybody can shed some light there, let me know as well.

The Mitsubishi DLP C9 only supports checkerboard format...so I haven't a clue if the 91.31 or any other old school driver could be used to support that. I noticed e-dimensional has a kit for DLP's here: but it states an Nvidia 8000 or above is required.

It seems to me that for the best bang for my buck in pursuing this avenue, the Zalman seems to be the best choice. My next question would be if the new 1080p Zalman's would be recognized properly by the 91.31 driver.

Thanks for the help,
photios

Yeah, the Zalman works on the old XP driver, I was using that when I first got it (the 22" model, but the newer ones should work too). I believe I was using the 91.31 combo or something there abouts. Then selected "Horizontal interleave (V-Rex)". Works like a charm. You can also use your Mitsubishi DLP with a registry hack, search MTSB3D.com for details.

Okay if the Mitsu will work with the old 91.31 combo, then I have no reason to buy the Zalman.

That means also that I'll have to get new glasses either emitter or dlp link to try out with the XP setup, since the Nvidia 3d Vision glasses/emitter only works with Vista/7 and 8800 and up series.

With the older drivers, you needed to use the same display driver version as the 3D stereo version so you need to downgrade your driver version to 91.31.

Manuel,
Thanks. I was initially going to try the 16X.XX drivers since they supposedly are better (can use dual cores etc.), but I'm not sure about that now after doing a Doom 3 session with the 91.31 combo.

Guys,

So at this juncture I have a little more news to report on this. I downgraded to 91.31 foreware and stereo, installed them, and then did exactly what this thread said here at mtbs. I was uncertain of whether or not this registry hack would work with 91.31 since they no where indicate in that thread exactly what drivers they were using to implement the hack.

Changed my Mitsubishi DLP C9 60" to 1768 x 992 using the underscan feature in the Nvidia control panel (wish I could make it 1824 x 1036 which is what I use on my GTX 295 Quad SLI setup using the new nvidia drivers desktop resize for DLP's, but 1768 x 992 ain't bad), reconfigured Doom 3's .cfg file to use a custom resolution of 1768 x 992, changed the Stereo type in the Nvidia control panel to Interleave SeeReal saved and closed out, ran the registry hack, then fired up Doom 3 and maxed out the settings.

I started up a new game and to my amazement Doom 3 had great seperation all over the place (at this juncture I was skeptical anything would happen). I had excellent framerates on the 7950 GX2 with stereo enabled (Doom 3 running at the highest settings possible). Now, I just need some DLP-Link glasses to try this out full force. Wish I could use my 3D vision glasses...

As a side note: I did NOT disable SLI on the 7950 GX2 and I did NOT disable one of the core processors on the Core 2 Duo, and lo and behold Doom 3 did NOT crash. I ran around the game for a while to see if it would crash and it worked fine. I was fully expecting to have to disable a core on the Intel processor as others have said to do with the 91.31 (more testing will bear this out). So far this is really good news, and saves me money of having to buy another monitor for OpenGL stereo gaming.

Now to decide on glasses choice...

Okay guys, I'm not very good at this, so here is what I did. I took the screenshots using the in-game Doom 3 screenshot (bind F12) and then converted .tga file to .jpg using gimp. Loaded it into Nvidia 3D Vision photo viewer and toggled the stereo view (be sure to set your viewer to 1768 x 992, as that is the rez that the screen's were taken at). If you know a better way to do this, let me know.

Anyone know where I can upload files in their original files that won't downscale the image? When I try to upload an attachment here it says "Upload failed. Please ask the administrator to check the settings and permissions."

You can use the stereodriver: press ALT + F1 while ingame and you'll have a screenshot placed in an nvidiaimg (or similar) directory. I recall this nvidiadir is in the rootdir of your systemdrive.
