3D on HDMI TV - Not working. Don't understand Nvidia 3D it, like at all. :-)
1 / 3
Hey guys!
I have just bought a new LCD TV (55", LG LM671) and now wanted to play some games on it. My Windows 7 PC with a GeForce GTX 670 and Drivers 314.07 (also tested with 314.21) is hooked up to the TV with a HDMI cable.
I ran the 3D Stereoscopic setup, my TV switches to 3D mode automatically, and I can see a 3D effect in the installer. Then I also have an option to select a 3D mode for the Windows Desktop that is "kinda 3D".
Now as soon as I run a game that should offer 3D (Batman: Arkham City, Trine 2, Tomb Raider) the TV says "3D mode detected" and displays a scanline-like effect -- but no 3D. This is evident by switching the LG TV 3D mode to "off", because then the picture is still 2D with some scanline effects.
I have tried starting games with 3D Desktop first enabled, also disabled, re-installed all drivers, tried also to disable stereoscopid 3D mode in the NVdia Control panel, but all to no avail. Once the PC switches to DirectX, it simply does not display 3D properly. No change if I switch to 720p or 1080p, no change if I use 60hz, 50hz or 24hz.
In the Nvidia control panel, the Depth-Slider, the buttons 2Change 3D Laser Sight" and "Set Keyboard Shortcuts" are greyed out, but for "Stereoscopic 3D display type:" it says "HDMI Blu-Ray 3D".
How is this whole Nvidia setup meant to be played (*g*) in 3D? Do I need any addons? I mean, the setup wizard properly shows 3D, so it can't either be the HDMI cable nor my glasses, but must be something in software. What is this ominous "NVIDIA 3DTV Play"?
Please advise. I'm really stumped. My friend has an AMD card and says Tomb Raider simply starts the screens in "Side to Side" mode, which his TV properly translates to the 3D mode. So it SHOULD work on my Nvidia card as well, shouldn't it?
Many thanks!
Garvin

Hey garv, hopefully we can help you here. First of all, you said you have bought a new 3D tv, but are you aware that you need to buy 3DTV play to run nvidia via hdmi onto your tv? Are you using this software?
3D desktop is something I have never heard of, which suggests to me you are enabling this on your TV? Can you confirm that.
So I am guessing that the problem is that you simply do not have the correct software yet. If you are not using nvidia 3DTV play, you can download a free 14 demo here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dtv-play-14day-trial.html
Us nvidia 3d users (aka we own the emitter) get 3DTV play for free when the emitter is plugged in. Sometimes buying the emitter can make more sense if you get it for a good price, as you can always re-sell it.

Nope, not aware of that, and not using it. The way I read the website was that I only needed it if I wanted to watch BluRay movies on the PC (which I don't).
So if I need to install/purchase/whatever that to play 3D games, that would explain a lot. :-)
3D Desktop is what I referred to when going to the NVidia panel, then "Screen resolution", there I can pick 3D resolutions that then also switch to a 3D mode of the windows desktop (it has no real effect, but the glasses seem to interpret it as 3D, I can describe it like that).
I will definitely try out this software, thanks for pointing this out and replying so fast! Much appreciated!

Garvin

No worries garv, if you have any trouble with the software come back and someone here is bound to be able to help you. For 3DTV play over hdmi you need to set your resolution for games at 720p max output.
There are 'hacks' to allow 1080p 60hz output, but I can't help you with that I'm afraid. Anyway, welcome to the world of 3D gaming (it really is the next step). Make sure you unlock advanced controls in nvidia so that you can change 'convergence' to get the best pop-out and 3D effects.
Also, don't forget to check out helix mods, where many games are made virtually perfect tolay in 3D:

If we don't hear from you again, will assume you are currenly masquerading as the caped crusader :-)

@garv, Increase depth to 100% and enable Keyboard Shortcuts in Advance feature. In game press CRTL+F6 to increase convergence (CTRL+F5 to decrease)....CTRL+F7 to save.....that 2 simple thinks make games looks AMAZING!!. The first time you see a game in 3D is priceless...i still remember the moment :)
Those LG 3DTV (i own one also) dont have any ghosting or crosstalk...so you can use 100% depth always, no matter what convergence you use.
Hey foreverseeking,
just wanted to report back. Just installed the trial software, and it works. Great - thanks for your insanely quick answer. :)
Glad you got it sorted. As DHR stated, make sure to unlock covergence so that you can increase the 3D effect to your liking. As for depth, everybody's preference is different. Newbies might find 100% depth very difficult to focus on depending on the screen size, so my advice is, see what works for you and play around a little to find something that feels good.
Helix mod, as stated again by DHR, is your greatest friend for nvidia 3D. Always check on there before playing a game on nvidia thats not 3D ready, as many games have been improved via the friendly mod community.
Happy gaming :-)

Just keep in mind with 3DTV Play you only get 5 activations on your serial/key and then you have to deal with customer support to get a new one.
Another alternative, if you don't need the 3D Vision Kit and if you're lucky enough to find one resonable, is to get an emitter off of ebay, that's what I did, and then you get 3DTV Play for free.
NVIDIA should really just sell the emitters for people that don't need the glasses, broken emitter or DLP users like myself.

This is completely off topic, but Nvidia should really offer the software for FREE for all gtx 670 & above owners. I can't believe they earn so much money of 3DTV play that it outweighs the extra sales and customer loyalty bundling the software would bring.
And software should never, ever, period, have a limit to activations, as long as it is used only on one machine at a time. In EU that is 100% illegal and have been proved so in 2012 under German case law. I love nvidia, but this EA style tactic does not breed customer love and loyalty.
3DTV Play is included for free with the driver downloads for 3D Vision hardware. So if you own 3D Vision hardware, you do get it - just to clarify.
Thanks for the input Steve. The more regular of us know this and advise newbies to consider getting the hardware as its less faff then losing keys. But you guys should really look at the benefits of either or
1: offering 3dtv play to top line gpus free (it's a selling point, encourages brand loyalty and rids consumer problems with codes as it's linked to gpu).
But if nvidia really thinks it makes more profit in the long run from selling the software, than at least:
2: Make the software be able to be installed an unlimited amount of times. Even apple have made a way to release all keys for itunes when you have accidentally changed your computer without deregistering your user id.
It is 2013, companies meed to realise word spreads very fast. A little bit of good will from nvidia will breed a lot more in profits and revenue in the long run. It does well to look at certain large game publishers stock prices, and how DRM and antagonistic copy protection methods affects share price. People having problems with your software effects my opinion of nvidia despite me not needing it (as i have nvidia 3D).
Bottom line is: customers should never have problems, jump through hoops, call non existent support to get their legally purchased software to work.
Anyway, good to hear from a member of the team, cheers ;-)

If you already have 3D Vision with an emitter plugged in, then you get 3D TV Play for free.
It should show up automatically in the NVidia control panel when you have a 3D TV plugged in. Not sure here, only what I've read.
