The problem with most headphones are that they only have one speaker per ear, so you'll only get poorly simulated surround sound. Not that it matters that much, in most games it will be perfectly acceptable
Funnily enough there is plenty of research into the matter that should allow any earphones/headphones to perfectly simulate 3D sound. The problem for commercialisation is that it requires an accurate scan of the shape of the user's ears so that the distortion applied to the sound from different directions can be simulated accurately, but this varies significantly from person to person so there is no one size fits all solution.

2x Geforce GTX 980 in SLI provided by NVIDIA, i7 6700K 4GHz CPU, Asus 27" VG278HE 144Hz 3D Monitor, BenQ W1070 3D Projector, 120" Elite Screens YardMaster 2, 32GB Corsair DDR4 3200MHz RAM, Samsung 850 EVO 500G SSD, 4x750GB HDD in RAID5, Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7 Motherboard, Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow Edition Case, Corsair RM850i PSU, HTC Vive, Win 10 64bit
simulated virtual sound is more than fine in games, i have tried my Steelseries 7H USB and Steelseries H Wireless (virtual 7.1) in The World of Wacraft - the sound positioning seems to be almost perfect.

There are a few Gaming Headsets that actually have multiple speakers, like the Asus Strix 7.1 that lacuna has. Reviews vary.
With Asus Strix 7.1 and both 3DV 1 and 2 glasses I can play max 1-2 hours without pain or discomfort. But with Sennheiser PX 100-ii there's no discomfort for any duration.
3DV 2 glasses are a little better than 1 but not comfortable with a headset. How come Nvidia never thought about the headset compatibility is a mystery to me.
THE NEXT LEVEL OF MULTI-DIMENSIONAL SOUND!
AstoundSound™ uses enhanced 3D sound technology software, we call 4D, built on over a decade of research and development into how the human brain perceives sound. In a similar way to what Hi-definition did for visual experiences, 4D audio immerses listeners in a 360-degree, realistic sound experience addressing azimuth, elevation, distance and movement over time. In other words, a 4D listening experience allows the listener to hear sound placement and movement within a complete, spherical, 3D listening environment.
pressure on my right ear causes physical pain
If you haven't had this professionally threated, I ran into a similar problem with ear pain several years ago. A friend of mine told me about ear candling, I was skeptical, but it solved my pain that materialized after a sinus infection.
Warning, this video is kind of gross

This is all getting way too complicated, we need a VR headset like this... it'll wrap your head with 360° audio/video and rest comfortably on your shoulders... ;)

I think of staying on earphones and why not of trying in-ear headphones for a better insulation. In view of some answers, I am afraid of quickly having a discomfort with both headphones and 3D glasses. Really shame that Nvidia did not better study it.

I got the good old Turtle Beach HPA 5.1, sadly discontinued. I rest the arms of the glasses on top of the cans instead of squeezing them in, works fine for me. I'd really like to try some of those 7.1 models someday. They're so damn expensive though.
