- Put Hairworks on LOW.
I think Hairworks on Low makes it apply to Geralt only. High adds it to horses and monsters. I prefer to leave it on High. If you want to see where it makes a drastic difference, check out the hair on the griffin in the initial cutscene with the merchant just before you come to White Orchard. I actually wish there was a "Hairworks on everything *except* Geralt" option, as obviously having it on Geralt comprises the bulk of the performance hit, but alas, I don't think it can be done.
- Put grass view on Medium/High - Put grass quality on Medium
I don't find "Grass View" and "Grass Quality" settings. There is a "Grass Density" setting, and yeah, lowering that from Ultra to Medium didn't seem to matter much quality wise and appears to be worth 2-3 FPS, so thanks for that tip. If by Grass View you meant the Foliage Distance View, I leave it on Ultra for the trees, for reasons described in previous posts.
- NPC count doesn't matter
Agreed, which is why I set it to Low, in case higher settings reserve resources that will never be used. Not worth testing to see if it actually matters FPS wise, just no reason to set it above Low.
- Disable AA
Agreed.

Skaut: I had checked that guide before, but your link got me to look again and get full use out of the "Interactive Comparisons" which I neglected before, so thanks for that. Yeah, I think I'll keep Foliage View Ultra and reduce grass density to Low. EDIT: Actually I think Grass Density on Low is a visual improvement. The grass that gets added as you raise that setting seems different from the grass you can see on Low, in that it's back-and-forth motion in the wind goes all the way down to the base, which if you notice it looks kinda terrible, as if the grass is sliding back and forth on the ground. Setting this to low eliminates most of that grass, and what remains is grass that moves at the top, not the bottom. Add to that the framerate boost for turning it Low and yeah, kinda a no-brainer to set this to Low.

I notice Qwinns playing 1440p. I think i'd rather play at 1080p than turn the settings down. But do you even need AA at 1440p? Have you tried this or does it cause issues with your monitors native resolution or something? 1440p and 4k for that matter is nice and all, but I feel unless the textures are that high detailed it becomes a case of diminishing returns.

1440p is my monitor's native resolution. I suspect I'll get the best quality keeping it at that. As far as lower settings, I'm really not missing any of the ones I'm turning down. I don't like the blur effects. VSync isn't necessary, not seeing any tearing. AA doesn't make the game look any better at 1440p that I can tell... really, at this resolution, AA becomes just another blur effect in a sense. I'm keeping foliage and Hairworks at highest settings, at least for now (tho I will try Low and compare fps and quality tonight, helifax). The grass actually looks better on Grass Density Low as I mentioned before. The only setting I'd really want to change is putting Shadows back to Ultra, but even there the effect is really minimal. If Helifax is right and Hairworks on Low gets me enough FPS boost without losing much quality, maybe I'll do that then.

Ok, just did a bunch of testing with Hairworks, and wow, they must have really improved the efficiency over the last few updates. I know it used to be legendarily hard on performance, but (given the caveat that I'm keeping Hairworks AA at 0, which may account for some of this?) I'm seeing very little difference in FPS by turning it to Low or even completely off. At most I'm gaining maybe 2 FPS dropping it to Low, and only about 4-5 FPS by turning it off completely. I expected more in the 10 FPS range from turning it off altogether. Quality wise, Low is certainly a lot better than off, but I can see the difference between it and high. Worth 2 FPS? Yeah, for now. For that little bit of impact I'll even leave it on for Geralt (though thanks for that mod link, helifax, I'll keep it in mind if I need it in Velen to keep foliage view at Ultra). Note that I've been primarily using the cutscene I mentioned earlier, with the griffin attacking the merchant, for my testing. I figure it's got lots of trees, grass, etc. all around, plenty of foliage at far range, and it's got Geralt, Roach, another horse and the griffin for testing the Hairworks. Incidentally, I tested out Tomb Raider 2013 today, and I gotta recommend it 3D graphics wise. It is one of the few 3D Vision Ready games out there, and I noticed that Lara's hair looks every bit as good as Hairworks on max. Read up on it, and apparently it uses AMD's hair solution (TressFX I think it's called) which was apparently always quite efficient. And at absolutely all max settings I was getting solid 58-62 FPS on the in-game benchmark.

Last driver works great, and yes, helixmod installation guide works too. The only issue I have is, once in a while when I alt-tab out of the game, then alt-tab back in, about 5-10% of the time it'll freeze/crash. Then if I restart the game, my FPS is cut by about half. Rebooting at that point solves it. Had only one crash actually in game during 4-5 days of pretty intensive play. On the positive side, turned out most of my tweaking above was unnecessary. I've turned grass, shadows and anti-aliasing back to max settings (and 4x AA for hairworks) and still running very smooth, in the 40-55 FPS range most of the time. How? First, I discovered that my 980Tis were considerably easier to overclock beyond the factory settings than I thought. Added +125 Mhz and 500 to the memory clock without even increasing voltage, running quite stable and didn't seem to increase heat at all. So that helped a few FPS. Got 24990 in 3DMark Fire Strike after that, up from like 23200, woohoo. Then, also, and I'm not sure how much if any effect this had, I went to NVidia control panel and in "Manage 3D settings" changed the global "Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration" option to "Single display performance mode", seeing as how I am only running 1 monitor. Again, no idea if that helped, but it's the only other thing I've changed besides that overclock that could explain the improved performance.

What kind of frame rate are you getting with that surround setup Helifax? and are you turning graphical settings down?
You mean the game freezes after 10-20 minutes or in certain locations while the audio is still going on? When ALT+Tabbing it exists and the game generates a dump ? No nvidia driver crash or anything else?
Yes exactly that 10 - 20 minutes in, usually audio keeps going for a bit and then exit to desktop!
