Optoma 770 Color Issues! Help me! Color issues with Optoma
Hey Everyone,

Bought the Optoma EP770 and it works in Stereo at 85hz. I know people talk about color issues (L/R color difference) but Im not sure why, but one eye seems to have a solarized look (like 16bit color vs 32 bit color) almost like there the color is out of range. Is this normal for these series of projectors? Im sure this model is the same in stereo as the EP739 so anyone know if this is something that can be fixed? I was expecting color differences (blue tint) but this 16bit solarized look in one eye is odd, anyone have any idea (does this make sense?) By the way, other than that Farcry looks fantastic!! Stereo works awesome except for that dropping color in certain ranges.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The reason for the usual slight colour difference between the two eyes is identified in this technical paper:
http://www.cmst.curtin.edu.au/publicat/2007-05.pdf
"The compatibility of consumer DLP projectors with time-sequential stereoscopic 3D visualisation"

However, this doesn't explain the solarized look you're getting.
Do you get this effect with everything you show - how about still JPS images?

One possibility is the time-offset (phase) of the switching of your LCS glasses - but this doesn't entirely explain it either. What glasses and dongle are you using?

BTW: An extensive list of 3D compatible and incompatible projectors is provided here: http://www.3d.curtin.edu.au/3dmovies/projectors.html

Cheers,
Andrew.

First off, thanks for your reply Andrew,

Ive read up extensively on 3D stereo before getting this projector so I was well aware of the L/R color difference, but the solarized look was a suprise. Doesnt appear so much in W.O.W, but badly in Flight Sim. (It does however appear in all games - some worse than others) That could be brightness/contrast relative to each game (brighter in Flight sim) that determines the amount of solarization/out of range color glitch. I am an Optoma ep770, ED glasses and dongle, and ED's new high powered emitter and glasses - 6800GT on XP - latest, . The Optoma is running through a 75 foot VGA cable, which I think may be the culprit. Best way is to test with a shorter cable to determine if that is the issue. I originally tested it that way, but only for a short time and didnt have good testing time. Now playing FS2004 and the sky is banding in places, same with most games, solarization in one eye dammit! So im not too sure, checked all connections, but i think Ill eventually get to the bottom of it. Wish I got a PB6240 instead, Compu-America sold it on me the jerks. Anyways, will make do until the next upgrade, just wish I could get rid of this damn solarization problem. May need a super VGA cable, cause its doesnt present the cleanest picture.

Cheers Andrew, any ideas are welcome. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

OK, here's some suggestions:

1. Go ahead and try the shorter VGA cable - it is worth trying. However I can't see why this would affect one eye and not the other.
2. Try running your display at 60Hz 3D rather than 85Hz 3D and see whether that changes the presence of the solarisation. Flicker will obviously be worse, but this should also eliminate the slight colour difference between the two eyes. It will be interesting to know how the solarisation effect is affected.
3. Try reproducing the solarisation effect with some JPS still images. e.g. find the game where it occurs worst and grab a JPS still image using the NVIDIA Driver screen grab function. Also try some colour bar images.
4. Is the solarisation effect always in the same eye or does it happen on different eyes on different days.
5. try taking a photo of the effect with a digital camera (through the LCS glasses) and share the result with us.

Let us know how you go.

Ok, will try the shorter cable, but your right, one eye and not the other? Besides, I never had this issue with my Benq 6200. When I run the projector at 60hz, no problems, but 75 or 85hz, and the screen starts to show odd flickering in places (again, not an issue on my Benq). This projector may be defective, so first thing Im doing is going to Costco and exchanging it, and when i get home Ill try long cable again, then the short. (Actually, Ill see if the demo version at Costco will do this same thing at 85hz). The solarization seems to affect only the same eye (I think, Ill check again) but it is major distracting in games, screws up the depth since colors arent merging properly (played painkiller last night and man it really looks bad in that game). I will also try to get some pictures to you guys ASAP. I really hope replacing the projector will do the trick. Ideally I would return it and buy a PB6240, but can't find it anywhere. What kind of setup are you running by the way? What projector (if any) do you use or would suggest based on best results and cheap price? Anyways, Ill be damned but Im gonna fix this somehow!!!!

Thanks Again! Your help is greatly appreciated!
Damien

By the way, what are your favorite games in Stereo? So far I would say:
1.Farcry
2.Flight Sim 2004
3.Painkiller
4.FEAR
5.WOW (WOW!!!!)

Any games you would say are "must see"?

Newer XGA PJ from BENQ are good, (MP 720, 720p, 721) - 720p is positively tested for 3D. The picture is only cca 10-15% smaller from the same distance (smaller DLP chip).
Useabler are MP 6.. series , only 600x800 res.
(I have 2 6240 - this is my love :-)

Flatout 2 is cool but flashes all the time (acessing harddrive). Any fix for this?

So I got the replacement projector and Ill test it with a short cable first to see of is giving me the solarization. If not then I know the cable is at fault and will order a VGA signal booster. Maybe that would do the trick (I think it would). If it isnt the cable then Im at a loss (I would guess its just the limitation of the projector) but Im sure the Optoma series is all the same (739..etc), so why this 770 would be doing this Im not sure. I hope I get this figured out, but thats half the fun with making setups like these. 3D Stereo sure rocks, its unfortunate its being marred by such a strange glitch. Color difference doesnt bother me at all, but the damn solarization is driving me crazy!!! Any one out there with an Optoma series projector offer any suggestions?

Again, you all rock for your help. Will post results later this evening.
Wish me luck

If this doesnt work, Ill return it and order a Benq MP721. Is this the one you guys think is a good choice? Any suggestions? I just want a decent all round projector that can do the stereo3d with minimal color differences!

Ok, tested it with a short cable when I got home and its the same thing, solarization in one eye, same eye too. I close one eye and the image is perfect, close the other and its like parts of the image are dropping the proper color and those areas are greenish. I wish I could offer a better description. I will try and take screenshots tonight. Very distracting so I think Im going to go ahead and order the Benq MP720. I would love to hear from you guys first, just to verify this projector does indeed work fine (close one eye, color is bluish, close other eye, color is yellowish - that doesnt bother me, just the green wierdness is driving me batty!)

So....which Benq should I get?

Holy rush job Batman!

Placed an order for the Benq mp721 - Hope to god it works without issue!! I cant see it not working with every other one working from the 6 series and the 720p too. But with my luck eh...Isnt this projector the next step over the 720p? its gotta work :(

Ill let you guys know how it works..... :D

Just not gonna put up with the solarizing...also buying a Belkin VGA signal booster as well, just to get a nice clean image through that 75 foot cable...

Man, I just want blemish free stereo (slight color tints I can deal with)

By the way.. does anyone have a 7 series Benq to report on?
