3D vision performance issues
I am planning to buy a 120Hz 3D monitor and play the games in stereoscopic 3D. As far as I understand, this requires 120fps. Does it mean that right now without having the 3d support, I can check the fps of a game and try to find where I can get minimum ~120fp which shows the maximum performance settings I can get with stereoscopic 3D. Probably this means reducing the graphic settings on BF3 because playing 120fps on average is not easy. I have a 560TI SLI configuration. I would be glad if 3D gamers share their experience. In non-CPU limited, non-Vsync/framecap limited situations you can roughly expect your FPS cut in half in 3D Vision. However, the rules are a bit different for SLI for the reasons you stated with maintaining a high min/max FPS in 2D and SLI scaling. You actually will get closer to single GPU framerates with Vsync in 2D when running an SLI config in 3D Vision. If you wanted to get a more accurate gauge of 3D Vision performance with SLI, I'd play your favorite games with just a single GPU and Vsync enabled. If you can maintain 60FPS, you'll get a similar experience in 3D Vision. This is where the robust, high-end GPU SKUs tend to pay off the most, as they generally have higher minimum FPS than weaker cards.

Also BF3 is very demanding in 3D Vision and you may get slightly less than 1 GPU performance because there's some kind of frame sync/Vsync cap with the game in 3D on faster rigs. I've noticed it slightly on my rig, some with faster GPUs have noticed it a lot, but with 2x560Ti you may not notice it at all.

Overall though I'd say your rig will be great for 3D Vision, as you'll be able to play maybe 90% of the games in my list with everything maxed and still maintain 60FPS per eye.

I think what you're asking, is 120 frams per second in a game required? NO. You can play 3d with a crappy videocard, get 10fps, and still be in 3d. It will be the same as bad performance in 2d. yes 120 HERTZ monitor is required, but monitor refresh and games fps are 2 different things.
