1080p 24 fps Is this good enough for games?

I game on a Panasonic 50" plasma. Ran both 1080p and 720p in many games. As I said, 1080p vs. 720p - go with 720p, it looks just as good as 1080p but without the fps issues. I get no flicker and ghosting is very very minimal and barely noticeable on these 2011 plasma sets except in very high contrast scenes.
Wrong comparison. Correct comparison is 1920x1080 CB on a Samsung vs 720P on any 1080P HDTV, including Samsung. As your post illustrates, people who have 3D gamed on a Samsung in CB mode will never say "scaled 720P looks just as good as native rez 1080P". Francomg's evaluation above is spot-on, he has seen both.

You are basing it all on checkerboard, which cuts your resolution in half, so your 1080p is only 540p per eye. Drop it down to 720p and you are doing 360p per eye, of course that will look like garbage vs. 540p.

I really don't think CB is the way to go for 3D gaming on a TV.. Granted I've only seen 3D CB gaming on one display, and it wasn't a Samsung, but I was not impressed at all in comparision.

No problem.

I'm sorry to hear that Samsungs looks so bad at 720p.

Hippo69, if you are dead set on 1080p 3DTV gaming it sounds like you should go with a Samsung. Also I believe the 2011 Samsungs have dropped the Checkerboard 3D mode, so be sure to get a 2010 one. And it sounds like you will always have to run games at 1080p, cause 720p looks so horribly bad on Samsungs. So be sure your video card(s) is up to the task.

I'm very pleased with the 2011 Panasonic ST30 at 720p. The difference on this set going down from 1080p was not really noticeable, except for the increased FPS and visual effects @ 720p. To generalize and call 720p on a 1080p set nasty or hideous is very misleading as that is far from the case on many sets out there.
No problem.

Exactly right, but I doubt if you appreciate the reason your 1080P frame packing looks almost as bad as your 720P frame packing. Panasonic, like Samsung, does 'video mode' pixel processing when in frame packing mode. In all other modes (CB, SBS, etc.) 'PC mode' pixel processing is used. All TV makers have a "PC mode" because they acknowledge Video mode looks bad for computer graphics. The prob is that because frame packing is mandatory on 3DTVs, all TVs automatically jump from PC mode to Video mode whenever a game is launched in frame pack, no way to stop it. Like you, both Libertine and I have observed this lack of difference, Libertine on his Sony, myself on both my Sony and my Samsung. Now you report the same thing, except Libertine and I also see a big difference in aliasing (jaggies on edges) which you don't see. No surprise, my wife can't tell the difference between standard definition 640x480 and high definition 1920x1080 broadcast TV. Go figure.
The key is that with CB, games are processed in PC mode instead of video mode, that's why CB is so important.
There's no need to rationalize a Panasonic purchase, Panasonic is a fine TV except for 3D gaming. That's why I hope that next year either Nvidia will add SBS mode, or Panasonic will add CB mode so that Panasonic will become a viable option for 3D gaming.

Well, I can't say much about Panasonic 3D Plasmas and 3D gaming at 720p60hz frame packing cause I don't have one. I know Panasonic Plasma are awesome and may do a batter job. But Samsung Plasma and LED look horrible in 720p for gaming, both 2D and 3D. It looks hideous!!!!!!!!
I've seen both Panasonic and Samsung Plasma playing bluray3D and I can say that Panasonic might be a bit better, but the price difference made me choose Samsung. They're both great TV's and what matters is the technology which is Plasma, way better than LED for 3D. I haven't seen 3DTV Play in a Panasonic yet, sI I can't comment about that.

I do disagree that games look better in a 3DTV (1080p24hz or 720p6hz) compared to 3DVision + 120hz display. No way, 3Dvision for me is still the best 3D tech available for gaming.
Nothing beats 1920x1080p 120hz frame sequential. I've compared many games in both solutions, not talking about hertz 24hz vs 120hz, just the 3D quality and crispy image.
Frame sequential looks superior to frame packing, don't know why though????
Just try out Just Cause 2 and Batman in a 3DTV in 1080p and then try it out with 3D Vision in a 120hz display. Forget about LCD vs Plasma, size, hertz, just look at the graphics quality. 3Dvision looks much superior in my opinion!!!!!!

So very very wrong.

That's ok though, you clearly know all and have experienced many, if not all, types/brands of TVs and have decided that all non Samsung/CB 3DTVs are garbage and the only realistic solution to a quality 3DTV gaming experience is on said TV at 1080p. Lets get something straight here.

Roller or anyone werent praising Samsung just because they like the brand, its because of the FACTS. All new 2010/2011 LED TVs are great, and they all more or less have the same options.

When talking about 3D Vision and 3D TV play, all brands you will either be able to play 1080p/24fps or 720p/60fps. Thats on all new 3D Tvs, now with Samsung tvs you also get CB mode which gives you 1080p/60fps, its the only TV brand that inlcuded this option. When other brands also include this option then we will also recommend them.

People argue that 720p/60fps is great, well ok maybe to you, but nobody is saying that mode is great on samsungs either, doesnt have to do with TV brands, it has to do with the modes they support, and since samsung is the only TV that supports all 3D modes at the best resolutions possible, that makes it the best option for 3D gamers out there. You can get a samsung and game on your desired 720p/60 fps as well, if that looks great to you.

Obviously with 3D vision you arent gonna crank up all the settings, but i am sure if you have 2 graphic cards like the 560 up until the 590s, and you have all settings on max with NO AA and AF at 8x-16x, you will be able to get around 60 fps at 1080p.

I agree with your comments Kahled and almostinsane. I wish Nvidia added the CB option for 3DTV Play, so we would have more options, frame packing or CB. I would not complain If I was able to play games at 1080p60hz CB even if it's only half resolution per eye, cause it's still way better than 720p60hz FP. I've seen it and compared, played many games like this and 720p60hz FP really looks nasty. Saying that it's hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p 3D gaming, well not to my eyes, no sir............. Maybe I'm too picky.

Just cause 2 looks ugly in 3D 720p60hz FP, it looks really nice in 1080p24hz but it's unplayable at that refresh rate. Therefore I must say that nothing beats 3DVision quality. Try to really compare the graphics details of games like Left 4 Dead 2, Just cause 2 or any other game in a 3DTV at 1080p24hz and then compare to 3Dvision + 120hz display in 1080p120hz. I don't know if it's just me, but 3dvision kicks ass, much crispier graphics and realism. Don't know why??? The technical differences between both solutions, but maybe frame sequential works better than frame packing for 3D gaming??? 3D Games should look better in a Plasma or LED TV cause they are much superior than a simple LCD 120hz display. It's strange that games look way better in 3D in my Alienware 120hz display...

It's strange thought that 3D videos and bluray3D look way better in a 3DTV compared to a 120hz display, no comparision, 3D quality overall and ghosting are much better. uUnfortunately in my opinion this is not the case for 3D games. I still prefer 3Dvision frame sequential 3D solution quality over any other solution I've came across such as IZ3D, Tridef and 3DTV Play.

Dude I have a Panasonic 3d plasma and it is GREAT for 3d gaming. I enjoy playing in 3d on my Panasonic plasma much more than I did on my Viewsonic monitor. Alot of that has to do with the bigger screen, my 5.1 surround sond but the 3d picture is by no means bad. Also theres almost no ghosting with my Panasonic plasma which is a huge benefit.

Panasonic plasma are very good at 3d gaming. In fact did you know Nvidia and Panasonic worked together to make sure 3DTV Play worked well with Panasonic plasmas?

Panasonic plasmas are definitely no slouches at 3d gaming. Please save the snobbery for elsewhere.

Please save the snobbery for elsewhere.

snobbery:
I can tell you guys how worse is a plasma is compared to CRT. Just FYI, Plasma was never meant to be a household item, they just made it acceptable, now they must make it acceptable for 3d, they are in deep trouble. Greatly suffer from lack of brightness. CRT mk2 would be so much better.

Welcome CRT! No native resolution ^^ ,low brightness & sh*t... ˘˘ This is where the culture begins!

FTR: Im one of the people who find 720p beautiful and im mean #$%!ing stunning sometimes. Yet i recommend going with the iz3d or tridef drivers for side-by-side or CB mode which is "half res". Samsung has quite a few claims against there TV sets for ghosting and input lag that go undisputed so i personally wouldn't rush in that direction. When i tried SBS (on Roller11's suggestion[read: cage fight challenge]) recently, in seemed to result in a little finer picture at distances and the equivalent of 4x - 8x AA. I really don't think it will effect the core experience of a game very much though. In other words, if your were playing an online game for a month in 720p and then switched to SBS with high hopes for an amazing improvement, based on my experience, you'd be sorely disappointed. For flight sims however, 720p might make the dials and far away planes/details harder to make out. SBS/CB mode might just be your ticket for flight sims. Unfortunately, just switching from 1080 to 720 won't tell you the whole story about how 720p will look in 3d since the two individual pictures for each eye take some of the jaggies away. For example, if you own Metro 2033 in 720p and load up the "Market" level, the guy who addresses Bourbon right at the start has a ton of jaggies on his neckline that simply vanish in 3D mode.

It was only after Roller11 had me try SBS mode that i really started noticing the jaggies of 720p. Which is to say that anyone is perfectly capable of enjoying a game in 720p just as much as full res, provided they get used to the jaggies. If your used to loads of AA, it might not be your cup of tea. My previous monitors were 30"@2560x1600, 24" @ 1920x1200, 17" @ 1920x1200 and Im familiar with high resolution (and scaling) and i prefer 720p in 3D over 2560x1600 in 2D. Higher resolutions offer its own set of visual problems, as i noticed in Metro 2033 in full 1080p @24hz, one being that you can clearly see the fakeness of far away backgrounds and special effect (first outdoor level), while in lower resolutions it looks like a blurry version of real life. Another being that it can reveal unnatural straightness of geometry, while lower resolutions add in some more natural looking bumpiness and noise.

Btw: Does Roller11 still think that framepacked 1080p is compressed like he claimed a few days ago? (Reason # 32,396b that i still have my doubts about CB.....)

it's just compression... Someone over avsforums already said which half res compression for better spatial vs temporal resolution. So the question is null.

If you choose DLP or CRT you don't have to deal with that kind of compression , that's the way of life! /wave.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Tritosine2K,

My Samsung 3D Plasma is amazing for 3D videos and bluray3D and also 2D gaming/bluray/videos in 1080p and even lower resolutions. What do you mean Plasma should never meant to be a household item and that they made it acceptable, do you mean that Plasma TV sucks????
CRT is past my friend, it's old stuff, period. This isn't the 90's anymore. You may not like Plasma technology, but you must realize that CRT days are over, and you must choose between Plasma, LED or also the old DLP TVs.

Maybe my TV doesn't handle well 3D 720p60hz frame packing, but it does in 1080p and all 3D videos, especially bluray3D I've tried look amazing. Saying that Plasma was made acceptable for 3D is unacceptable. Plasma is better than LED for 3D and I think you're aware that Panasonic Plasma was considered the best 3D TV of 2010. I really don't get why you hate so much Plasma?
