I was thinking the same thing.
According to Steam's recent hardware survey from December 2017, 68% of their users are still using Windows 7.

At least on Win7, you'll be able to disable this fix to keep your performance. On gaming machines, I'm personally not particularly concerned about these sorts of vulnerabilities. On Win10 you'll take what you are given and say "sir, yes sir!"
On the other hand, I've yet to see good benchmarks, the smallish ones I've seen were using 3Dmark, and at least 3Dmark showed no performance impact for gaming. DirectX runs in user space, so doesn't switch to kernel very often, and thus is not likely to be impacted by the fixes.
If you want to cut to the chase, here is a good test app that lets you see status, and enable/disable the patch.

I'm keeping my windows 7 Partition for Gaming when required and will not install the updates. I'll do all my other work on the windows 10 one.

Nice tool here to check for vulnerabilities. If you run it as administrator you can disable the fixes that cause the slowdown.

Still can't get my 3d driver to install with the latest drivers on windows 10, so still on windows 7 for gaming. Linux for all else.

They forgot to include Windows 7 + Skylake or newer to their benchmark.

It seems like Microsoft screwed up a Spectre patch released within the last few days and are reversing it.

For what it's worth, I'm not at all worried about these type of vulnerabilities. I follow the security news fairly closely on Ars Technica, and these exploits are not really how malware happen today. These are more academic exploits, that can be turned into the field malware, but hasn't happened quite yet.
But the bottom line is that all of our code and systems from top to bottom are complete shit. We don't have good security models, our software is written to be fast to market, not accurate, and even the hardware in the CPU has glaring security mistakes. Intel has a security token for their trusted enclave that was leaked. It's all retards, 24/7.
Passwords seem like a pathetic answer? You are right. 2 factor authentication is barely a speed bump, but it's all we have. For stuff that matters like your phone and bank accounts, use an authentication app, not SMS.
But... on my gaming computer, I disable all that Spectre mitigation jazz. I want performance more than I want their fake security. Same with NVidia security bugs. It's just not that significant.
And the actual security for my data and my machine is to do proper backups. Daily, with at least one off site in the cloud. If I ever get stung by malware, it matters not at all, I just restore from a backup.
Your decision as always, is yours. But... make backups, alright?

LOL backups... i can't tell how many times i have a tried a software and when its time to restore it eather does not work or the backup is just oo frikin old that its no use. So maby its a blessing your pc would go over total format once in a while, atleast you don't need to organize it as thats just too much work LOL . Do you really have anything value there ? Photos, do i ever look at them ? No. Old documents, not rarely used. I would say only important thing could be some emails but actually still most of them are crap and the ones important should be printed. .... maby we should things valued to us off the computer
