I've seen a few threads about this projector but they don't seem to address my issue. I've had this model for a while and successfully tried 3D on it back in the day. Anyway I've now got the 3D bug again so here's my set up:
GTX480 / 3D Vision kit / 285.62 drivers / W7 64 bit / Q6600 CPU / 8GB DDR5 RAM.
The 3D works on my AlienWare monitor, but not on the projector (well, 'works' if you forget 3D Vision Live due to my Silverlight erroring on every single video).
I have connected a HDMI cable from the GTX480 to the projector, nothing else.
I ensured that the projector is selected in the "Set up stereoscopic 3D" section of the Control Panel.
I then go to change the resolution to 1280x720 120Hz. What happens is the projector's welcome screen appears, and after 30 seconds of what I would call 'colour saturation changing', my PC screen comes back up as if I had not pressed Apply to change the resolution - I'm back at the native 1280x800 60Hz.
My projector just will not change to 1280x720 120Hz.
I tried 1024x768 120Hz which seemed to have worked - in that the screen went dimmer but my Stone Giant game demo wasn't 3D. I got a red error stating that the resolution might be too low.
Now I should mentioned that I have not taken my projector through the initial 3D setup wizard, like I did my monitor. However the nVidia Control Panel has detected it correctly. I would like to try taking my projector through the set up wizard but I have no idea how to launch it.

I would say drivers.. Try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers and run the 3d setup again.
GTX 1070 SLI, I7-6700k ~ 4.4Ghz, 3x BenQ XL2420T, BenQ TK800, LG 55EG960V (3D OLED), Samsung 850 EVO SSD, Crucial M4 SSD, 3D vision kit, Xpand x104 glasses, Corsair HX1000i, Win 10 pro 64/Win 7 64https://www.3dmark.com/fs/9529310
I uninstalled all NVIDIA drivers/software, restarted with only the HDMI connected to the projector. I then installed the latest drivers and clicked on "Enable 3D Vision" to start the set up wizard. At this point the same thing happens - I get the projector welcome screen and that colour saturation changing. I had to press Esc twice to return to my desktop.
Also, manually changing the resolution to 1280x720 120Hz doesn't work either, like before. Welcome screen then back to 1280x800 60Hz.
I have noted that the projector reports 59Hz when it's supposedly changing to 60Hz. Could that be causing this problem? Although, saying that, when I changed to 1024x768 120Hz the projector detects 120Hz correctly.
You pay £650 for a 3D projector and the 3D doesn't work. Great...

Thanks for that, it looks like it does the job but I got as far as clicking Test and I got the same problem - colour saturation changing. I pressed Esc a few times but it wouldn't go back to the PC screen. I had to do a 'hard shutdown'.
I did what you said with just the PC connected to the projector with a HDMI cable.
My projector will change to 1024x768 120Hz but Stone Giant is like using 8 colours and isn't even 3D.
This box is a replacement after my last one stopped switching on. As always, an RMA means you get another faulty projector. I'd flash the firmware of the projector if:
a) A firmware flasher existed for this projector
b) A firmware image existed for this projector

I just contacted ViewSonic who reminded me that this projector only supports 1024x768 120Hz, so not sure why people think they can use this projector any higher for 3D... so confusing.

Definitely sounds like the projectors faulty. hopefully they send you a late 2011 model
wow 3d vision blog and Viewsonic really need to update there info! the projectors edid and nvidia says it supports 1280x720 120Hz but even that's not the projectors native resolution of 1280x800. when you select 1280x720 120Hz the projector stretches the picture making it look wrong because 1280x720 is 16:9 not 16:10 the projectors native aspect ratio. Viewsonic messed up real bad on this projectors firmware. the newer firmware allows you to select an 16:9 aspect ratio which fixes the stretching problem but still doesn't allow you to select 1280x800 120Hz. most people who own this projector don't wanna lose 102,400 pixels by selecting 16:9 instead of 16:10. Viewsonic nor nvidia were gonna fix it /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> that's why we created the 1280x800 120Hz fix /clap.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thanks, I'll just keep RMA'ing until they send me the latest model. I have vague memories of using this model for 3D but I don't think I was very impressed. The good thing though is ViewSonic send a courier next day to exchange the base unit. I'll update you tomorrow unless I get the damn thing working right!

I'm not sure that it's firmware, because it seems to be confirmed on the main thread for this projector that the new firmware basically just adds a new aspect ratio.

Not sure if any of this helps either?

Other things...
On mine, via HDMI I see the 3d vision ready logon on the Nvidia control panel, and my pjd6531w is correctly recognised as such.
With the custom resolution, were you able to set the projector to 1280x800x120?
Last but not least, have you tried another HDMI cable?
Really not sure what this could be. I have had loads of problems with 3d vision and custom resolutions, but I've never had a problem just manually switching desktop resolutions.
I know you said you only have the projector connected, but are you booting the pc up that way too? The drivers sometimes get confused with multiple display devices being connected.

3. nVidia Control Panel > Change Resolution > clicked ViewSonic icon > 1280x720 120Hz = refuses to change, got projector welcome screen (searching and failing to find sources) then desktop again @ native 1280x800 60Hz.
4. Set up stereoscopic 3D > Stereoscopic 3D display type - clicked ViewSonic > Test stereoscopic 3D = got projector welcome screen (searching and failing to find sources), after pressing Esc a couple of times I get the desktop again @ native 1280x800 60Hz.
5. Repeated Step 3. Same result.
6. Repeated Step 4 but this time set the "Select when the display is in 3D mode:" to "Only while 3D programs run full screen" = got projector welcome screen, however curiously while it searched the sources and hit HDMI, it very shortly appeared to accept 1282x720 120Hz but never produced the PC desktop. After pressing Esc a couple of times I got the desktop again @ native 1280x800 60Hz.
7. Gave up.
Is it a problem if I'm running about 12 metres of HDMI cable between the gfx card and projector?
I'm tempted to sell this projector and use that money to invest in a more nVidia 3D Vision friendly 3D projector... if such a thing exists. :(

I'm running a 10m HDMI cable without issues, but I don't think it's the absolute length that causes problems, it's more down to the quality of the cable. Some of them do have a bandwidth rating, but as with all cables you never really know until you try.
You know I have a few long HDMI cables (all bought blind from ebay) and I'm sure one of them wouldn't work @ 120Hz. I ended up using it just for satellite TV instead because it would work at 1080p but not @ 1280x800x120Hz....

Initially I thought your point was addressed here http://hdguru.com/hdmi-cable-makers-and-dealers-use-misleading-labels-to-push-needless-expensive-upgrades/2175/
...but it goes on to state:
Only two types of HDMI cables are included in the HDMI licensing spec: “Standard†(aka category 1) or “High Speed†(aka category 2). The latter is required to assure the cable passes 1080p signals (including 3D), which is the highest bandwidth video signal (now and for the foreseeable future).
Im thinking the same thing im running a 10m cable. maybe your hdmi cable is not up to the bandwidth. its just like Ethernet cable there's cat 5, cat 5e and cat6. i always laugh at the sales people trying to sell me super bandwidth hdmi cable but maybe your cable is just not up to it

Please can anyone help?
Great...

:(

wow 3d vision blog and Viewsonic really need to update there info! the projectors edid and nvidia says it supports 1280x720 120Hz but even that's not the projectors native resolution of 1280x800. when you select 1280x720 120Hz the projector stretches the picture making it look wrong because 1280x720 is 16:9 not 16:10 the projectors native aspect ratio. Viewsonic nor nvidia were gonna fix it
Hope that clears things up

My graphics card appears to have a 1280x720 120Hz mode but the projector doesn't want to change to it.
Also again @ 1024x768 120Hz the screen has intermittent flickering.
It's almost like this model was not made 3D ready at all.
Or as others have said, the new firmware seems to have removed 3D capability from my projector.
Hatharry I tried your fix again but it wouldn't take - came back to same box with Test button and no Apply button.
So is my problem that I have the latest firmware and I should have old firmware?
Time to get a job and buy new stuff. I've got some tech lust building up and just need a wodge of cash to spit at online retail outlets...

1. HDMI from gfx card to projector only.
2. Turned on projector and PC.
3. nVidia Control Panel > Change Resolution > clicked ViewSonic icon > 1280x720 120Hz = refuses to change, got projector welcome screen (searching and failing to find sources) then desktop again @ native 1280x800 60Hz.

You know I have a few long HDMI cables (all bought blind from ebay) and I'm sure one of them wouldn't work @ 120Hz. I ended up using it just for satellite TV instead because it would work at 1080p but not @ 1280x800x120Hz....

I'm running a 10m HDMI cable without issues, but I don't think it's the absolute length that causes problems, it's more down to the quality of the cable. Some of them do have a bandwidth rating, but as with all cables you never really know until you try.
