I have been playing Deep Black : Reloaded...It is 3rd person shooter. The main character moves away and toward the camera while playing much like Batman : AC...Would it be possible to set dynamic convergences based on the distance the character is away from the camera? I am thinking that the distance from camera variable could add or subtract convergence values on the fly...Sound cool? It would just be minor adjustments but I think it would be awesome.

The closes to what you want is tridef's auto focus(its not too good)
What could be possible. Is making a .reg file that that edits your convergence setting and binding it to a key. Not sure if it would be that practical since everyone likes different convergence settings.

Wait Wait Wait...I think we are on to something here...I think that the SDK could support "Dynamic Convergence"
1. SDK has implementation for a special XYZ point. This Specific XYZ coordinate will be the same for everyone regardless of seperation settings. (EX. The main character center body in a 3rd person shooter)
2. This special point is labeled as "Dynamic" it changes based on it's parent item (camera)
3. Then when we all have our different setups, we set our convergence to our liking and we always get the same delta dynamic change. This delta would be hard coded then by the SDK.
I think that this could be implemented and deployed tonight by NVIDIA

Its alot more things then you think it is. Its SDK because its for developer to include its in code before its finished. The developer and nvidia have to work together just to draw a crosshair at depth. Developer needs to write the code then 3d vision software can make adjustment.
You are asking for nvidia convergence to scale with depth of character model but how does 3d vision access this information(you need the developer to include this in the code). Then 3d vision engine is also not built for this. Also scale from what value to what value. Many, many factors.
Deployed tonight is also very unrealistic.... no offense but this won't happen at all.

Interesting idea about the reg keys, eqzitara, but I think it would require an alt+tab on each regkey execution, otherwise it could be used to create profiles, tied to specific separation profiles and be similar to iz3d. It is even possible to launch regkeys silently (without confirmation) and through hotkey, but still without a way for this to work in-game (no alt+tab) there is no much use. As for DDD's autofocus, from what I've seen it worked great most of the time (for 3rd person games), because it also modified separation settings, that is, however at lower sep levels. It did provide pop-out for the objects closest to the viewer, which was very effective for particles, but was and still probably is performance-intensive.
I also think that this is very game-specific and has to be incorporated by the developer. The games I've played on the ps3 did have a similar feature, but far simpler, for example Killzone 3 effectively reduced separation and changed convergence on close-combat kills, it was awesome as it didn't break the immersion, while maintaining maximum separation at all other times. Best settings are different per user, but I still think that if we will continue having locked convergence in 3d-ready games, the least they can do is script it accordingly for different in-game scenes and not lock the same convergence setting for the whole game.

You can set the .reg to launch on a key binding similar to shortcuts on your keyboard. Then set registry to launch "silently". I believe their is a setting for current convergence level. Not gameprofile which would force you to alt-tab. Again this isnt practical and expecting users to do this is pretty much not gonna happen.1

As eqzitara says this is a feature that's implemented in other stereodrivers like tridef and iz3d. However the feature does not work well practically (causes nausea or doesn't work with good stereosettings) i don't use it. The best things is different hotkeys @ iz3d-driver for stereosettings. 3 settings are enough to make most games playable when shifting convergence and/or depth is a problem. The issue about shifting convergence/stereodepth is all entirely about bad programming of the gamedevelopers.

The new tridef seems to be nailing that auto convergence pretty well just now, feels a lot smoother and accurate nowadays, it works well for fifa 12 now, used to feel to stuttery the focus before.
I really wish 3d vision would try and incorporate this as an option, just like it is with tridef, makes engine rendered cut scenes come alive in games.

I've done this before using "Autohotkey" (a third party application) to try and set different convergence settings for Skyrim (mostly for the map and the silly 'level up' screen). Whereas the reg settings can in fact get updated silently I had to Alt-Tab out of the game and back in again (and when out of the game it always takes two attempts to alt tab back in...) for them to take effect. So its a pain. I assume the game only reads the registry each time it initializes the 3d engine. Turning the emitter on and off also did not work. Would be great if anyone else could work this out. I also tried sending multiple key presses to Alt-F5/F6 using Autohotkey as a way of jumping from one convergence level to the next quickly for a given game, but the key presses get sent to the game engine and don't get picked up by the nvidia driver and hence nothing happens.
Having said that, the new HeliX dll has convergence presets now - I've not had chance to try it though. Maybe this finally solves the convergence profile problem?

Yes, I already use the silent execution of regs to change my display size to 150% separation, but alt+tabbing is a requirement and as you said Skyrim in particular requires double clicking to get back in the game. As for Helix' new dll i think it allows for multiple convergence profiles for a particular shader and not for the game overall.
