Running 3D on second monitor, not primary?
Hi all,

I have my PC connected to my main monitor, a non-3D compatible LG LCD at 1920x1080, by HDMI. Windows 7 sees this as "Monitor 1". The DVI output on the graphics card (GTS 450) is connected to my nVidia 3D Vision compatible Acer X1130P projector by DVI-to-VGA cable, and appears as "Monitor 2".

Obviously I don't have the Projector on all the time, but switch it on when I want to watch something in 3D.

However, neither the nVidia 3D Vision Video Player or Stereoscopic Player will accept that "Monitor 2" is the 3D capable output, not Monitor 1. In fact, unless I switch the Projector to be Monitor 1 in Windows 7 "Display Properties", the nVidia driver flatly refuses to acknowledge the existence of a 3D capable device at all - if you go through the Wizard it doesn't acknowledge the Projector - even if you drag the application on to it.

The answer to this is, to play anything in 3D I have to switch around the arrangement of the monitors in "Display Properties", but then my taskbar and all my icons move to the Projector - which is only capable of 1024x768, and get all mixed up, and my wallpaper shrinks, and I have to squint at the screen to move the mouse around (it's a good 20 feet away from where the PC is located!).

I cannot permanently make this swap, and drag the icons and taskbar to the LCD, as the Projector is not left powered all the time - and as soon as I boot the PC without the Projector switched on, they swap back anyway. Also as they are different resolutions, the wallpaper doesn't line up. Oh, and some applications try to open on the Primary monitor all the time, which is tricky to resolve when it's not switched on!

I've ended up with a tool that stores the desktop icon positions, so I can restore them when I've finished, but much easier would be allowing the 3D device to be Monitor 2, and be able to run the players on Monitor 1 but select Monitor 2 for the output. It would also allow me to continue using the PC on Monitor 1 whilst the kids watch a 3D film on the Projector.

Any suggestions greatly received!

Bill.

I have spent quite a lot of time trying to get 3D working on a secondary monitor and in the end I gave up on Nvidia.

3D works on the secondary monitor when using Intel or AMD graphics solutions and I still confused as to why Nvidia don't allow that option.

ooo quite the dilemma. I assume I'll be in the same postition in a couple months when I replace my current TV with a 3dtv, compatible with 3dtv play. I want to have my tv hooked up to my kids pc as a second monitor with 3d capability, the primary monitor is a regular 2d. If you are having these problems, then no doubt i'll be faced with a similar problem. /unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
