3D VISION: performance loss, very low fps low framerate when 3d vision is enabled
  1 / 2
Hello *,

A while ago I bought a new system but I got only 17..20 fps in Crysis & Crysis Warhead with a 295gtx. My first guess was a hardware failure or bad drivers, so first I installed all drivers for the board's chipsets and even flashed the bios. Enable/Disabled multi-GPU & PhysX. But, nothing changed - just a slight improvement to 18 fps.

Then I tried to figure the problem out and run Crysis' GPU benchmark tool which started in windowed mode and giving me 50..60 fps. As soon as I switch to fullscreen mode the performance dropped and I got the 17 fps again. Strange! So finally I found the wrongdoer - it was the 3D vision's driver settings.

In the settings you have two options:

you can enable / disable stereoscopic 3D

you can hide stereoscopic effect when a game starts
If you have it enabled but hidden for game start then I got the bad performance.
If you disable the whole stereoscopic effect you get the performance as expected.

Remark: The funny thing is if I enable stereoscopic effects and run the games in 3D I get a fps about 35..40!

(!) Summary:

3D vision enabled but not active: 17fps

3D vision enabled and active: 35fps

3D vision disabled: 50fps
Maybe someone else experiences similar problems!?

greetings
Geoffrey

Thanks for that. Thats a bit of a bummer since you may not want to play all games in 3D, so what your effectively saying is that we would have to disable the 3D vision feature for anytime your not paying in 3D, which is a bit of a pain........

Yes! This is exactly what happens on my system. I don't know if it's true for other users! /pirate.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':pirate:' />

what about disabling it from the start menu, gives you an option to enable or disable it. does it work out the same doing it from there?

Do you have the crosshair enabled? Even if it isnt visible ingame it still takes considerable resources. You get worse frames than me on my 260 its crazy! /turned.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':turned:' />

    *EDIT*

Perhaps i misread your post, but do you even have a 3d vision setup? If so there is the nvidia stereoscopic service that you could easily stop & disable from within Computer Management - this will completely pull 3d vision from affecting your system.

correct! no 3d at all! but more performance. and in enabled state and 3d effects visible the performance is not so bad either!

crosshair disabled! no need for that little thingee! ;)
Yes, I have a 3d vision setup and another passive stereo setup. That's not the point. Of course, you can disable it all. But I experienced a strange performance drop when 3d vision is enabled, meaning you can turn it on and off at any time you want, but not visible. I.e. in the settings 3d vision is enabled but hidden at game start. And the performance drop is significant! It's worse than with 3d effects turned off which is... a little bit curious!
But maybe this is only a Crysis issue. As far as I can remember there was no significant performance drop with Colin McRae Dirt oder GRID! Will report after the weekend...

This is absolutely normal. Your GPU needs to render two separate frames and mesh them together, so there's a huge workload for the stream processors.
I suppose that if 3D games gains success over the market in the following years, hardware designers will dedicate hardware to 3D vision rendering, adding proper processing units to the framebuffer stack to render the two perspectives, and alter their colours properly (if using discovery)

    not exact
GPU renders two separates frames when 3D mode is ACTIVE. but here is a problem of catastrofic fps drop just if stereoscopic AVAILABLE in nvidia control panel - this thigs are not the same

In my experience, having the "enable stereoscopic 3d" option checked in the nvidia control panel leads to vsync being forced on. This adds input lag and reduced performance drastically, but must be done to avoid screen tearing which would ruin the 3d effect. Vsync will be turned on if the option is checked off - regardless of whether or not you're actually using 3d.

There's no fix for it. If you want to play with skill or high framerate, turn off the 3d option from the control panel.

I am having the exact same issue with crysis.

3d vision enabled in control panel (but not in use) 15+ fps average
3d vision enabled in control panel (and in use) 8fps average
3d vision disabled in control panel 50+ fps average

    1920x1080 480gtx, q6600 3ghz.
I am having the exact same issue with crysis.
