I don't know why you compare the HMZ with the Rift. Excepted they are both HMD, they've not the same purpose. It's 2 different concepts for 2 different uses. Ideally, you have to have both: HMZ for 3d vision and the Rift for VR compatible games.

People compare them because they are similar devices, with pretty much the same target audience, they just have different specs. Essentially both are Stereo 3D HMD's. One is a higher rez HMD, the other a higher FOV HMD. We're not comparing apples and oranges here. I play VR on my HMZ and have done long before I heard of the Oculus Rift but of course I have to use a 3rd party head tracker such as a wiimote gyro or TrackIR. Take a look at Datura on the PS3, it came out way before the Rift and was developed with the HMZ in mind for a VR experience. To be honest I would not be suprised to see more direct comparisions between the 2 products when Oculus have a consumer ready version of their Rift. Lets face it there isn't much else to compare a Rift to at this present time. I also would not be suprised to see a HMZ-T3 with larger FOV released if the Rift takes off. Sony already have a consumer ready product out there which can offer a comparable or better VR experience and I'd be very suprised if they were not working on an upgrade with all the "VR Buzz" going on right now. I do agree that at this moment in time, owning both devices would be the best option. I guess it depends on the limitations of your wallet.

So while you have a 640x800 screen such a small amount of the screen is dedicated the movie. Which is ridiculous. Though I think virtual realitity movie theatre is a cool idea to try out but I think the hmz-t1 is the best designed by just total darkness seperating you from video. You watch a movie to be immersed by movie. The rift's "theatre" is the immersion of being a person watching a movie. Since beating Tomb Raider (sometimes using the HMZ and other times using my living room television) I've since begun playing the Capcom game "Remember Me" and it is also incredibly good. Once the headset is comfortably situated on your face, and the screen is as clear as you can get it, the game is very fun. I use a depthhack mod with it sometimes too, and while it distorts some of the text, the end result is amazing and the screen ends up feeling so gigantic it's hard to describe. To be honest, the key to the experience with the HMZ-T2 for me has been to remove the plastic light-blockers entirely and instead use a soft black stretchy fabric to wrap around my head and the headset, blocking out light that way. Also, while removing the forehead pad and putting thin foam instead DOES increase immersion, I've found that getting bigger, pillow-like forehead pads has been best for me. What you give up in screen immersion is more than made up for with the comfort-level. The more comfortable and relaxed you are as you play, the easier it is for imagination to take over and feel swept into the game. I love this headset, bought two of them so I can share the experience with my wife as well. 3D HDMI splitters are available on Amazon. I also use it paired together with my Nvidia Shield when I'm in the bedroom. While the Shield doesn't output 3D, the IMAX experience really brings my game-streaming to another level. I have played Tomb Raider on the HMZ-T2 and can confirm that this man's review is spot-on! It makes it so easy to attach with the character. Since beating Tomb Raider (sometimes using the HMZ and other times using my living room television) I've since begun playing the Capcom game "Remember Me" and it is also incredibly good. Once the headset is comfortably situated on your face, and the screen is as clear as you can get it, the game is very fun. Sorry in advance for being noob :) Is the Rift and the HMZ just the same (excluding resolution, FOV and technical spec) when you disable head tracking in the Rift? What stopping Rift then, to be used to watch movies and play games using 3D Vision like HMZ? How i see it, it's just a matter of software. They both are more less build in the same way, one screen per eye. Am i right?

They are not the same. Oculus is using one ~5" screen with cheap lenses and corrects image through software. Sony is correcting image in hardware level using expensive optics and 2 small expensive 0.7" OLED screens for their hmd. Thats why its basically acting as a regular monitor and can be plugged in to basically enything with hdmi out. Anyway, thats how i understand it, i own dk1 and modded hmz-t1. 0.7" 720p oled screen has 2,098PPI, so thats one of the reasons why the image quality is superior to oculus atm. Basically no screen door effect, whereas oculus still has one at 1080p sbs(dk2) I suppose you are right though, basically just the software is holding rift back. Sony HMZ-t# has twice the resolution of DK2. [Like 6 times of DK1] In specs for Movies. Though in fact the difference is more in application. This is not even mentioning that viewing at the extreme FOV of rift makes the resolution appear poorer. Just that unless you are watching a movie "designed" for the rift [like it needs to be 960x1080 per eye] its not really a great device for movies. Though the perks are 3D. But you get that same perk with a hmz-t1 and with 1920x1080 per eye. Like as of NOW I think if your planning on getting a Rift for movies don't. [Who knows maybe some people will start developing for Rift] Its still in development and while there isnt much content for anything. It really depends on how fast people develop qualitity content for it. Sony HMZ-t# has twice the resolution of DK2. [Like 6 times of DK1] In specs for Movies.
Though in fact the difference is more in application. This is not even mentioning that viewing at the extreme FOV of rift makes the resolution appear poorer.
