I have a GTX 590 and I can play the game just fine in 3D.
I have everything at HIGH and turned off all the Anti Allising and Ambient Occlusion and i get a steady playable fps around 50 and mostly it stays just at 60.
Though i am sure that a better driver form Nvidia will correct the fact that sometimes when there is too much lightning the FPS drops near 40 which is not as great.
However I am enjoying the game in 3D for sure. Been playing online and singleplayer in 3D all the time.
Its a joy for me.
However I do agree that the performance could be better with better drivers.

Yeah a lot of complaints here. I just wanted to add... This is the best 3D Vision game ever in my opinion. It's going to be very hard to top this especially since it's multiplayer. With all the convergence options, zoom options, etc. tailored specifically to your liking, makes it completely playable in 3D. You can tell they put a lot of effort into making the game actually 3D playable. Without these options I doubt I'd play in 3D simply because I wouldn't be able to aim properly and just switch to 2D and be done... But this is what it's all about - you have to give Nvidia and DICE some credit here. A lot it.
As for performance, SLI gpu utilization could be better for sure... the performance hit is pretty steep but I'm sure this will be resolved eventually... It'll be really interesting to see how the single core kepler gpu's perform. I think that will be the ultimate bench for the next gen and hopefully we'll see them tear through this game in 3D...

I'm hoping someone can answer a question I have about performance in BF3 with 3DTV. I'm trying to determine how powerful of a gpu I need. Since I have a 3DTV, I will be playing the game in 3D at 1280x720, and want to run high/ultra(don't need MSAA) settings, and hopefully maintain 50-60fps. I was hoping something like and EVGA Superclocked GTX 570 could handle this, since the resolution is only 720p. Is this possible, or am I expecting too much?
BTW, the 570 would be paired with a 2500k@4.4Ghz and 8GB 1600mhz RAM, so no bottleneck I think. I probably won't get a 570 since Kepler will release soon, but I just want to decide on how powerful of a card I need.

Is it me or this game is not very good in 3D? It feels like its only 2 layers: what is real close and everything else its like far away. I play it 3m away from a 80 inch screen, the renderdevice.soldierzoomconvergencescale (which I didnt quite understand what it is yet) is a 0 and the renderdevice.convergencescale is at 3 (more that this and the gun seems unfocused). I tried differente settings but the 3D Vision effect just looks weak...Metro2033 and Batman´s (both) looked much better. The good thing is that the game is very well made otherwise: graphics, sound, gameplay, but it almost feels like a Crysis 2 fake 3D effect!
Do you agree?

Andre, there's also a renderdevice.stereoseperationscale (or something like that) which is like the depth wheel to give more depth. I have it set at 1.25 I think but that is in a 23" monitor so play around with that. You may need to adjust your other settings to line everything up too. I take it you have opened a user config folder in your bf3 directory so it sets these settings each time you restart the game?

A single mid-range Kepler that performs similarly to the GTX 570 (rumored GK104) with 1GB+ VRAM should be fine for BF3 at 1280x720p in 3D. The game has performance issues however in 3D even with top-end configs so 40-60FPS is probably more realistic. I personally think this is an engine limitation in S3D that needs to be addressed by DICE, but we will see if Kepler improves the situation. The recent 7970 launch somewhat confirms my suspicions however, since the GTX 580 performs very favorably compared to the 7970 in BF3 but falls further back in other non-CPU/engine limited games.

I know what you're saying, the game needs a 3rd convergence control for objects in the distance or dynamic adjustments made to convergence as you increase depth. Right now there's only 2 convergence settings: gun and ADS. The end result is that objects look very flat with different 3D depth planes. Its not nearly as bad as Deus Ex HR but its still slightly better than Crysis 2 imo.

Wait for more 3D Vision 2 monitors to come out. Also, the 590 should be more than capable of achieving those framerates.
that would be a big fat negative on the FPS for the gtx 590. I'm using two GTX 580's and still can't get more than 40fps on ultra settings. If two GTX 580's is faster than a 590, there's no way a 590 can get more than 40fps.

If people would read the thread they would know that there is a 40fps cap (in outdoors scenes, in 3D) regardless of what hardware you have. The Frostbite 2 engine is itself limited (crippled?). It is literally impossible to get more than 40fps with all settings maxed no matter what kind of rig you have and neither NVIDIA nor DICE seem to give two ****s about it.

Not at all. You need to tweak out the 3D settings via the console. The convergencescale setting in a tough one to get right. Too much the gun looks off... Too little the background is out of focus a bit (and gives me a headache).. Just right gets some pop-out and the gun looks just right. Some maps need different settings though... It takes me a few minutes to adjust all my settings. I must set 6-7 different settings before I even begin to start. But I'm not complaining... This beats console port untweakable crap games anyday.
And oh yes, comparing Crysis 2 to this game is an insult!!! :)

Hey guys saw this morning there was a new BF3 patch for PC. No specific mention of improved 3D Vision performance improvement but a few lines that gave some hope:
DICE-
We are releasing a minor PC update that aims to improve general performance and stability and solve some reproducible crash issues. The update also includes support for the upcoming Intel “Ivy Bridge†product line and performance improvements on AMD Radeon 7xxx series graphics cards .
List of issues fixed:
Support for Intel’s new Ivy Bridge product line (as yet unreleased)
Fixes for two reproducible client crashes:
Operation Firestorm- Conquest Large – Fixed a client crash when users spawn in certain vehicles.
Canals - Rush – Fixed a client crash at the 2nd set of mcoms if the player drives a vehicle into the vicinity of the exploding rocket battery.
AMD Radeon 7xxx series performance improvements
This minor fix is releasing on the 14th February, 8AM UT. This download will be via Origin.
We would also like to inform the community that we have several ongoing developments with regards to balance and gameplay, performance, stability and the overall feature set that will be announced in the coming weeks.
I briefly tested this morning but unfortunately there does not seem to be any major improvement in performance, still ~40FPS looking in directions with far draw distance and GPUs only 70-80%. I also did not see any new 3D stereo console commands.

Hey chiz, have you come across any new console commands taht help to increase preformance in BF3? Or any other tweeks that may help?
The last suggestion you had posted was the worldrender.dxdeferredcspathenable. This helped to incrase FPS by 7-10 fps.

Thanks for the command advice, I will try it also and leave my input here. :)
I have a config.cfg file in the base directory, at least this is what 3dvisionblog site told me to do. But it dosent work, I have to set it everytime I enter the game. Can you please explain me how to do it, please?

I'm hoping someone can answer a question I have about performance in BF3 with 3DTV. I'm trying to determine how powerful of a gpu I need. Since I have a 3DTV, I will be playing the game in 3D at 1280x720, and want to run high/ultra(don't need MSAA) settings, and hopefully maintain 50-60fps. I was hoping something like and EVGA Superclocked GTX 570 could handle this, since the resolution is only 720p. Is this possible, or am I expecting too much?

I briefly tested this morning but unfortunately there does not seem to be any major improvement in performance, still ~40FPS looking in directions with far draw distance and GPUs only 70-80%. I also did not see any new 3D stereo console commands.

Hey guys saw this morning there was a new BF3 patch for PC. No specific mention of improved 3D Vision performance improvement but a few lines that gave some hope:

Hey chiz, have you come across any new console commands taht help to increase preformance in BF3? Or any other tweeks that may help?
The last suggestion you had posted was the worldrender.dxdeferredcspathenable. This helped to incrase FPS by 7-10 fps.
Thanks

If people would read the thread they would know that there is a 40fps cap (in outdoors scenes, in 3D) regardless of what hardware you have. The Frostbite 2 engine is itself limited (crippled?). It is literally impossible to get more than 40fps with all settings maxed no matter what kind of rig you have and neither NVIDIA nor DICE seem to give two ****s about it.

it's total bull****, i'm upset that with $1000 of graphics cards (two GTX 580's) I can't get more than 40fps in 3D.

Hi sorry I didn't see anything else in there that might help improve performance, but I only played with it for about 10 minutes. I tried all the major console commands with no success.

Thanks for the command advice, I will try it also and leave my input here. :)
I have a config.cfg file in the base directory, at least this is what 3dvisionblog site told me to do. But it dosent work, I have to set it everytime I enter the game. Can you please explain me how to do it, please?
Cheers,
Andre
