Blank screens Only the beta 3D drivers worked for me...
Hi all. I submitted a post regarding 3D driver problems a few days ago but didn't get any replies. Basically, both screens went blank when I tried to set up 3D. Hope the following provides something for somebody.

It's working now -- with everything apart from Dark Messiah.

The NVIDIA 3D drivers from the CD supplied with the glasses didn't work, nor did any of the current drivers on the NVIDIA site. Every time I tried to set the system up using the 3D wizard, the screens blanked but Windows continued to work. Very frustrating.

Only the beta 3D drivers worked for me.

I would like to help more but now that my system's reasonably stable I don't want to do any more experimenting for a while. So I'll just share what I have from recollection.

When I was trying out the non-beta drivers I remember getting everything working fine until I enabled Physx and multi-GPU. My gaming system comprises a GTX295 with a GTX275 that has a GTS250 co-processor (no SLI).

With these earlier attempts at loading drivers, I assumed that it would be best to assign Physx to the GTS250. When I installed the beta drivers and got the system working, I noticed that Physx had been automatically assigned to the GTX275. Could that have had anything to do with my problems I wonder?

Nothing but the beta drivers properly recognised the Alienware 23in monitor. As an aside, if you're thinking of buying this display, take a close look at the specifications. My local supplier (Overclockers UK) advertised it as 23.6in. It still is. (or "They still are" if you prefer). The largest screen dimension is 23in dead. It's small.

When evaluating this monitor, I just looked at the 23.6in specification and thought, "23.6in only a little bit smaller than 24in". But the Alienware, although pleasing to look at, is a relatively small display. I'm pretty sure that at least some of the 22in 3D displays on the market would trounce it in total display area. It currently stands between a 24in Samsung and a 24in Acer and believe me, it is small: bright though, which is possibly more important for current NVIDIA technology.

ps if you're using Vista (maybe XP too) and you get a blank screen, don't press the reset button immediately. Try CTRL-ALT-DEL then tap TAB four times, then RET , then up arrow, then RET again. That way you may be able to restart Windows properly (not that it deserves to be restarted properly!) and get into safe mode. Cheers.
