i am bit confused here. do you mean you can use 2d bluray drive to play 3d bluray movie disk? I know TMT3+sim3d can convert 2d movie into 3d (not real one but virtual one). So are you sure it's playing the real 3D vs 2D false 3d conversion?
There's no such thing as a 2D drive.

From his post it seems he's confused as to the fact that there are 2D and 3D standalone bluray players available. A bluray drive on a PC, however, is only limited by the software used to play the disc in the drive (aside from possibly the 128GB BDXL discs that were just announced) and as such supports the 3D format.

Some people have already answered your confusion about the blu ray drive. Its just a drive which can ready blu-ray discs no matter what data it contains. We need codecs to decode the movie files which is what 3D plugin from arcsoft provides. At the moment SIM3D does not support 2D to 3D blu ray conversion. So I am 100% sure that I am playing real 3D version of the movie. Real time 2D to 3D conversion is not that good anyway. So you can easily tell the difference.
