2d surround 3 monitors 1 is different, will it work?
Hi All,

I'm after some detailed information about getting 2d surround gaming working with two different monitors.
I'm looking at getting a 3rd monitor (3d) but obviously it'll have faster hz

The 3D monitor's i'm looking at are either
http://www.asus.com/Display/LCD_Monitors/VG278H/
or
http://www.asus.com/Display/LCD_Monitors/VG236HE/

What i want to know is will it work?

Thanks

To display 2d surround they need to be SET for the same resolution, hz. However to be honest, I dont really agree with going diff monitors. Surround is all about immersion. When you got 2 screens look different in size contrast etc. It kind of kills immersion. To each his own though I guess.
So basically you'd have to set your 3d monitor for 60hz(or whatever your monitor supports). Then same resolution.

well it's cheaper than buying three totally new monitors.
considering the screens are pretty damn close to teh same size i'd say that's pretty negligible.

You can do this and honestly, its not a bad set-up. Just use your new 120Hz panel as your center panel and your older panels on the wings. This way, you can game in 3D when you like or go 2D Surround in games that don't play well in 3D.

Generally however, you will want panels that are of the same native resolution and roughly the same size (<1"), otherwise the breaks and differences in image sizes for the wing panels would be too distracting imo. How many monitors do you have now and how many of the 3D monitors are you planning to buy?

You can actually trick the Nvidia driver to go into 3D vision surround with only 2x3D monitors and 1x2D monitor, at least you could when I tried it a bit over a year ago. Again, not recommended as you get full performance penalty of 3x3D monitors but only the benefit of 2.

Yeah might as well, will still be pretty good but HUD elements split across the screens will be even more bothersome. Worst case you have a nice productivity/poker/youtube set-up. You may just be playing in 3D most of the time anyways. What kind of GPUs config are you running? Surround is very close to 3x the GPU requirements, maybe closer to ~2x with 2-3x the VRAM requirement and 3D is ~2x the GPU requirements of 60Hz Vsync, so in order to run either you're going to need a good bit of GPU horsepower, probably GTX 470/560 Ti in SLI or better.

You should be aware what the actual requirements for 2D surround are and read some of the threads in the surround forum.
For surround you require 3 monitors with identical refresh rate, resolution and sync polarity.
It's hard to guarantee the last requirement without identical monitors.

You used to be able to work around it with custom resolutions, but there are reports of this no longer working in the surround forum.

Yeah, well aware of the actual requirements, i won't make a move to get the monitor until i know that it'll all work.
