The info on nvidia's website seems to imply that support for 3D vision ended with the gtx 600 series. Is that really correct? Did nvidia abandon 3D vision in newer gpus?

Actually nvidia abandoned the support of 3D Vision and the info at their website is out of date, but the feature itself is supported in all new cards. And with the help of community (people who make fixes for games) 3D Vision is awesome !

Just to correct the above statement.
Nvidia DID NOT abandon DRIVER support for 3D Vision. All GPUS support 3D Vision.
Nvidia is still fixing bugs related to 3D Vision and 3D Surround (last driver actually solved a bug in 3D Surround + SLI in Windows 10).
What mistersvin tries to say is the Nvidia stopped SPONSORING games for 3D Vision so no more 3D Vision Ready titles sponsored by Nvidia will come out:)

I have a feeling that with PC stereoscopy, just like home cinema, the reason consumers gave up on it is because of multiple technologies competing and because a lot of people find active shutter technology uncomfortable.
Good news is that now there are passive panels that support 1080p @ 60Hz, easy to use EDID overrides and eye swappers and, with all the work done by people like yourself, heaps of supported titles on PC. I only got into stereoscopic gaming about a year ago but feel that, because of all the 'unofficial' support, there has never been a better time to enjoy it.

I think its more because hardly anyone has actually experienced it.
I just noticed my cousin has a 3d compatible monitor that he has had for years. and I told me he was crazy not to get a kit. He actually just had no idea, I told him if he didn't like it I would buy the kit from him.
Two days later, and after a bit of "training" by me on how to use depth and convergence correctly. He is now kicking himself he didn't try it years ago.
It's just one of the technologies that is impossible to demonstrate until you try it for yourself. I think this is the primary reason why it failed commercially. People. Just. Don't. know...

Yea, I would agree with that also - you really have to experience it for yourself to understand.
I guess most people have had experience with 3d at the cinema, where it has become a bit gimmicky and almost an annoyance - so they don't bother with gaming. But the depth it brings to a game is amazing, more than film, because you are controlling the action and perspective.
In truth, I wasn't expecting much out of PC - I got a 3d gaming monitor to try PS3 3d gaming. Now I have a bunch of 3d games on PS3 waiting to be finished because I enjoy it on PC much more :D

You need at least vista or higher to run 3D Vision. And I believe that the minimum requirement for 3D Vision is at least an 8800GTS or an 8800 series card. But Forceware 3D drivers will run on anything 7000 series or lower and XP.
