3D HDTV's 1080p@60Hz Per Eye?

I'm curious why there is no side by side support for 3dtv play? it seems that almost every 3dtv supports it, why isn't there support from nvidia? Don't get me wrong, i have a samsung plasma and would love the checkerboard support. is there a visible difference between checkerboard and side by side?

Hi

Our primary plan was to support the HDMI 1.4 frame packed modes for 3DTV Play. We underestimated the demand for checkerboard and side/side support and we now have to go back and add it.

Checkerboard for Samsung plasmas and LEDs 3D Ready TVs support has aways been in 3D Vision. That support isn't documented on Nvidia's website so people think that CB isn't supported even though it is.

Great question. I tested this on my Samsung plasma using CoD Black ops and there is no difference whatsoever, CB is indistinguishable from SBS.
So why add SBS when we already have CB? With no SBS support, people with Panasonic, Sony, Vizio, toshiba etc. can't use nvidia's 3D drivers (Frame Packing doesn't count because it's ugly). I originally had a Sony, but I had to ditch it in favor of a Samsung so I could do 3D gaming with 3D Vision. If 3D Vision had SBS mode, I'd still have that Sony which I prefer to my current Samsung.

i didn't think i could use checkerboard with an hdmi 1.4 input though... i have read that there is a workaround to get it working on an hdmi 1.4 tv, but i'd need an nvidia transmitter to trick the pc into thinking i'm using the nvidia glasses. I'm thinking i'll just wait until 3dplay supports checkerboard.

@Andrew, i have read numerous posts about you guys implementing checkerboard in a future update. Any idea how far out that is? and are you going to be putting side by side in as well? BTW nice to see a company actually respond to questions and answers, and also troubleshoot on a public forum. You don't see that often :)

As far as I know, it's unprecedented having the manager of an entire dept. responding directly to questions by end users. For example, DirectV sold me an over the air tuner so I can pick up local digital stations. Problem is, they deliberately boobey trapped the tuner's design so that it cannot tune some available channels, thereby cheating customers out of available programming. Ya think I'm going to be allowed to speak to the person responsible for this outrage?
I think not!

Hi

Unfortunately I do not have dates for checkerboard yet. Side/side isnt confirmed yet, but we are going to investigate it.

Thanks for the kind words on my responses, I understand how frustating it can be when you buy a product and you dont know if the company actually reads it.

We support it on DLPs when using 3D vision glasases.

We are going to add it to 3DTV Play for HDMI 1.4 3D TVs next. No schedule yet though.

If you want CB mode, you'll need to access it through 3D Vision, not 3DTV Play. 3DTV Play is strictly framepacking and that won't change as long as current management is setting policy at Nvidia.

It's been a year or close to it.

Surely, if they had any intentions of reimplementing checkerboard to 3DTV Play for HDMI 1.4 3D HDTVs that can display the format, they would have done so.

Meanwhile, checkerboard is available from both of the competeing 3D middleware vendors, you might opt to give them a try.

You mean Tridef and IZ3D have had checkerboard this whole time?
