Skyrim I know it's doubtful but?

I think we're getting somewhere. I also replaced TESV.exe with a 1.4 version and the shadows appear to be fixed. There is still some strangeness, similar to what the 2D players are reporting, but the 3D aspect is working properly. Certainly it's playable, for me anyway.

Windows 7 keeps backups of folders as a default setting. If you have Windows 7, simply right-click on the main Skyrim folder, and select properties. Then select the Previous Versions tab. You likely have at least two folder backups of Skyrim in there. The 1.4 version of TESV.exe is 16.7MB, not 16.8. Make sure to make a copy of the 1.5 version, just in case, then overwrite with the 1.4 version. That should do it. I'd also recommend putting a copy of 1.4 in a different directory for safekeeping, as the Windows 7 backups refresh every few days and will be overwritten eventually.

Hopefully this helps.

I have checked the game and can't say anything good about it.

You can't get old shaders to work with new .exe, because it works with vertex in other projection(was world converted to view in the shader, became view - i.e. converted by the game).
So after this changes any information about w- depth lost and we can't calculate appropriate offset.
The new pixel shader contain z coordinate, but it's not exactly what we need for position correction(linear W value required).

At this moment I see only two ways :
1. Convert z value to W in the shader. it required Projection matrix, but shader doesn't have this matrix.
2. Do approximate offset, this can cause incorrect shadows depth at big convergence values.

I'll try later to hook Projection matrix in the DLL, but don't know if it'll work.

I allowed the game to update to 1.5, turned off auto-update in STEAM, and then overwrote TESV.exe with a copy of the version 1.4 one I kept on my storage hard drive. New fixes like being able to marry Lydia work and I get to keep the working shadows from 1.4. I have only played it a few minutes here and there since doing that so I don't know if this will work longterm or if there will be some issue that causes a CTD later on.

Personaly, I ve made a backup of the Skyrim folder in 1.4 on another HDD. So I can still play with this proper version without Steam update checking.

Thanks for the suggestion. /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Now I have a good copy of the entire Skyrim 1.4 folder.

I also set the .exe file to "read only". I hope that will keep steam from writing over it again.

Thanks for looking into this. I looked at it briefly on Sunday and couldn't get any of the old methods to work and didn't really have time or knowledge to put more effort into it.

For everyone else, our best bet is probably still to lobby Skyrim to revert the old shader code in 1.4 in this thread, its got quite a bit of feedback and views so it'll be harder for Bethesda to ignore it: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1359268-15-beta-shadows-broken-in-stereo-3d/

Yeah I have tried the game in 2d mode only (ewwww, just for testing though)
Shadows are flickering and all over the place, going underwater has issues, it's like they really need a new Quality Assurance team.

I'm not really worried and fussed though since Beth will fix it since 2D users are having an issue (if it was just 3D users having the problem we'd be ignored), I'll just move onto another game at the moment.

I kept an earlier version of the Skyrim Steam exe (1.4.27) and can still play. I don't think it would be illegal to host it somewhere for people to revert back to, since its a previous version of the game you need to buy in the first place in order to do anything with it? Does anyone know where it could be hosted? Would be happy to upload somewhere.

Sharing Skyrim.exe is like sharing a part of the game (or even the whole game files), I'm afraid it's illegal because it is a copyrighted files. As anyone could DL it and use it, even people who did not buy the game, you should not host it on a public server.

However, you can use MP to share files.

Thanks for the advice, I will not share it then. Hopefully Bethesda will make the 1.4.27 version available as a download from their site. I'll go and post over there requesting this (not holding my breath though).
