DLP Projector advice
Right fellas, i am sick of the ghosting on my plasma, my hmz is ghost free but there is something weird about the 3d that just feels off. I have heard people for years saying that DLP projectors are basically ghost free, now my question is to all of you who actually have one, is this true? If you use the nvidia test and converge really high do you get any hint of ghosting or is it pretty much perfect? I am hoping that the answer is yes, its bloody perfect, and of thats the case, what would be a good low/med costing dlp projector with good image quality? I already have an old optoma themescene projector that is not 3d compatible, but i really fancy a good display to get back into my 3d games. Any help would really be appreciated. :)

I've got the OPTOMA GT720 since 1.5 year and it's really gosthing free. I ve bought the ASUS VG278H 6 month ago and my first try was : Hugh, wath is this s**t. I ve discovered what means "gosthing" whit it. Btw the colors are more "washy" with a projector and the "rainbow" effect is a little disturbing too. My dream is a 1080p tri dlp projector with lightboost.

I never got a rainbow effect on my projectors. I always assumed it was lcd projector related. I guess not. Which did you like more out of curiousity. Projector or monitor. Tbh I sold my vg287h.

The rainbow effect is more noticeable in 2D and some people are not affect by it. For me when i ve got a black screen with some white elements (like a mouse cursor) if i go my eyes lef/ right rapidly , i can see the rainbow effect on the white parts. For the colors and the resolution i prefer the monitor (in particular for the First Pesron Shooter) But for the screen size (immersion) and for the gosthing free (wich is very unbereable for me on the monitor) i prefer the projector (for the third person view games). Something as particularly shocking me with the monitor, the firt time i've tried it is the depth. I was used to play with 100% depth and convergence focus on the character on the projector , but with the monitor, if i put 100% depth and convergence focus on the character its very unconfortable for me. in order to have the same effect with the projector i've to used the "depth hack", but by default , i found the 3d vision effect on the projector more than enough.

Well I have had my optoma HD72i for years and the rainbow effect never really bothered me to be honest, i could see it if I darted my eyes about the screen, but it was minimal. I have a samsung syncmaster 3d monitor in the cupboard, it is the worst of all for ghosting, and for some strange reason, it has never worked with my 670, i can get no picture output, its fine if i use my old card though. Weird. The HMZ-T1 is a strange one, it obviously is ghost free with having an oled screen for each eye, but the lack of depth cues outside the screen just make the 3d lack punch, still looks lovely though and the huge benefit is no light loss as well, I think the HMZ would work better if each screen had a frame round them, so you have a visual clue of the screen depth, for example, when i use helix mod with a slight adjustment to the hud to push it into the screen, i notice the difference much more on the plasma.

For DLP, ghosting just depends on the glasses. Basically, the DLP technology itself can't ghost because of how it works. As long as your glasses are fine you won't see any. The technology is built on extremely fast pixel response times. DLP projectors actually only display a single color at a time (red, then green, then blue). Each pixel is a mirror that moves to pass or block each colored light. It all happens so fast that our eyes just see it all blended together into a natural image (but if you ever see rainbows, you're simply perceiving the image for an instant as it really is, a sequence of colors). Essentially, the reason DLP doesn't have ghosting in 3D is the same reason DLP works at all in 2D. If you want a projector that works with 3D Vision, with the 3D Vision glasses, I'd recommend the Acer H5360. If you want a projector that works with HDMI like a 3D TV, I'd recommend the Acer H5360BD (720p, not available everywhere) or the Benq W1070 (1080p). These work with other 3D devices like Blu-ray players are consoles, but you can't use 3D Vision glasses if you have them. You have to get DLP-link glasses, and activate 3D TV Play on your computer.

I put a little effort into taking some actual photographs of my Acer H5360 in use, through the NVidia glasses. Extensive details and pictures in this thread: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/529466/3d-vision/3d-on-videoprojector/1
Btw the colors are more "washy" with a projector and the "rainbow" effect is a little disturbing too. It's pretty important to adjust the color and contrast when it's in 3D mode for the best picture.

The Acer H6510BD might be another option for you. Something interesting I recently saw was a YouTube video of a BenQ W1070 being used with a Black Diamond Fixed Frame screen. The interesting thing is that the screen has some kind of overlay that helps to prevent the image from being washed out in a semi-light room. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuCLH8g79Xo http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Rpy4HCIRNxs#at=36 Optoma is releasing a 3D Hybrid Laser Projector model HD 91 supposedly in September that looks promising, it'll likely be a lil pricey though.

@100" Black Diamond Screen for $2500 It'd be funny if there was a $5 paint/primer combo that did the same job. :)

Cheers for the advice. bo3b thanks for linking to that thread, very informative, really nice to see how well that test pattern held for each eye. it would be intersting to see the diffrence in the test pattern when running at 60hz and 50hz, when using the plasma for 3d i try to run any games at 50hz instead of 60hz as the ghosting is much improved.
