I have an Alienware M17X laptop that comes equipped with a GTX 280 board, and I was wondering if it's possible to load software onto it that allows 3D viewing with NVidia 3D glasses. I understand that there is new generation of 3D-ready laptops out there. I was wondering nonetheless if the GTX can drive the monitor on the M17X in stereo mode.

Does this laptop has 120 Hz Screen? If not, then you cant use Nvidia 3D glasses with it.

The M17x has got an ordinary 60Hz display. But maybe you can drive an external 120Hz Monitor with your laptop. You will need an active adapter for the DisplayPortConnector that converts Signals to a Dual-Link-DVI. And you have to install Nvidias Notebook 3D-Vision-CD .

The Notebook-drivers work fine with the Dell XPS M1730. You can read at 3D-Vision-Blog. But the M1730 doesn't need any adapters - it has a Dual-Link-DVI-connector.
I don't know if there are any sync-problems with the DisplayPort-adapters.

Michel, that unit goes from DVI to Display port, meaning it is intended to connect an "older DVI" computer to a monitor sporting a Display port.
The Alienware 2310 I purchased does not have a Display port merely a DVI-D port (and HDMI).
it is my intention to connect the display port end to the M17X and the DVI-D to the monitor..

Hi David,
I got one as well. I'm having trouble getting the NVIDIA Control Panel to go to 120 Hz. Do I need to do that?
Or can I just go to set up stereoscopic 3D directly?
I'm able to switch off the laptop display.
For some reason, the computer forces me to be in 640x480 mode...
Edit: woops, neglected to download the notebook drivers... doing so now. Will report back if there is still a problem.

The 3d worked briefly using the HDMI to Dual-DVI cable although we needed to run it at 110hz instead of 120hz.
It no longer works but when it did it was dazzling.
I was considering buying the Display Port to Dual Link DVI adaptor to see if that would work.
Dell Wreck Support says it will work, will not work (mixed comments).
Flint Eastwood, how do you know the Display port adaptor will work?
Thanks,

Hi David,
I got one as well.
Cheers,
Michel

Yes you need the lates notebook driver. Mine will allow mt to go to 120hz if I want to, but 110 works also.
