LOVING Mass Effect 1 in 3d! But, will Mass Effect 2 be as good since it is rated FAIR?
1 / 2
I'm 1/4 of the way through ME 1 for my first time. Playing in 3d with increased convergence really makes it almost perfect in 3d. I am discouraged that when I move on to Mass Effect 2, which I also have never played yet, that it is rated only Fair on Nvidea's list. Mass Effect 1 was rated Excellent. 3d is a REQUIREMENT for me when playing these games. With increased convergence in Mass Effect 1 I don't even mind the aimers/targeting systems because they seem "inside" my screen and deeper compared to the character which is coming out of the screen in 3d.So my question is....
1 - with all of the tweaks ive read about on these forums, can I make MAss Effect 2 look as good as mass effect 1? If i can tweak some things like i've read about here...then I will be happy if it looks as good as part 1. Does it?

Mass Effect 1
1. Go to folder: Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Config
2. Open BioInput.INI in notepad.
3. Add this line under: [BIOC_Base.BioPlayerInput]
It adds a key in game that can turn the hud on and off by pressing the 4 key.
4. Download this program I wrote. Basically it allows you to specify a key to turn off the hud when you're aiming and it automatically turns on the nvidia crosshair. Then when you let go of aiming (right mouse click) it turns the hud and everything back on and disables the nvidia crosshair. Follow the instructions.
This may be a lot of work I know but it's worth it for Mass Effect. It is also possible to disable the ME1 crosshair but this causes a bug with FPS that makes the game nearly unplayable in my opinion. I strongly recommend against disabling the in game crosshair in ME1.
Mass Effect 2
1. Go to folder: Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 2\BIOGame\Config
2. Edit the file gamersettings.ini in notepad.
Your system settings should be like this or similar if you want to try and tweak something:
Some people say you should set FloatingPointRenderTargets to false but that makes the game look unbelievably horrible. More info here: http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=5627
3. Go to Folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mass Effect 2\BioGame\Config\PC\Cooked
Backup the Coalesced.ini
Copy the attached Coalasced.ini in this post over the existing one.
* It turns off the in game crosshair
* It fixes the lens flare issue
* It makes planet scanning more efficient with the mouse
* It assigns the G key to be used to turn the HUD on and off
* It also gives you 1 million of each resource when you import a ME1 character. I HATE planet scanning and refuse to do it. I'll scan once for anamolies but that's it. Mass Effect 2 without planet scanning is an epic experience. With planet scanning it's a horrible experience.
If you want to edit the Coalasced.ini yourself then let me know.

The only problem left with Mass Effect 2 is the halo effect around fogvolumes. I know this can be fixed but NVIDIA doesn't have the time to do it. I think they only dedicate a certain amount of time to profiling each game instead of going all the way to fix everything. Once NVIDIA lets us profile games I'm sure we could fix this problem in a heartbeat. The problem with fogvolumes isn't unique to Mass Effect 2, it's a problem with many other games so I have no idea why NVIDIA doesn't fix it.
Mass Effect 2 could have an excellent or 3D-Ready rating if the halo was fixed.
I am now going to punch a hole in the wall since I have absolutely no control over profiling games. Fixing problems like these doesn't require 3D expertise. It requires programming knowledge, resourcefulness, will, dedication and being able to learn from someone else's code.
If you have questions let me know. I am all about making the mass effect series as 3D friendly as possible.

Yea I agree. The loading screens killed immersion. And now look what they did with Dragon Age 2. *sigh*

There are files floating around the internet that cuts the loading times by 3/4s. Bioware seemingly coded it so that a certain amount of the loading screen had to play before the level would load.

Is that what he was talking about? I never had a problem with loading times. I thought he was talking about the mission complete screen.

Jensen. Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed response. I'm sure I'll, with a bit of trouble, be able to do all that you recommended here once I beat ME 1. With my convergence way up in ME 1...i actually dont need to do anything. I play on a large 3d projector and the aimer etc all look deeper in the screen so I'm happy with it. A couple questions about ME 2 though.
1- Is this "halo" effect or thing that CANNOT be fixed (well it can...but you said it just won't be) THAT bad? Will I enjoy the game or is it in EVERY image I look at?
2 - when you say -
Your system settings should be like this or similar if you want to try and tweak something:
I dont quite follow you here. Only because to play 3d on my projector resolution HASX to be 1200x700 or whatever. but you say 1600. I can't do that. I have to have my desktop AND in game res to the 1200x700 ish.
Thank you greatly for your thoughtful reply. It will make my little space adventures so much more kick ass! oh and are you looking forward to ME3? Think it will be good in 3d?

ME1
When you aim in the distance don't you see double on the crosshair? That drove me nuts. With my fix it's 3984934 times better to have the hud completely turn off while you aim and to have the nvidia laser crosshair come up automatically then turn off when you're done aiming and having the hud return.
ME2
The res can be changed in the game itself. Make sure you turn off dynamic shadows. Turn off bloom in game. You won't even have to touch gamersettings.ini if you don't want to. But follow the rest of the instructions.
The Halo is annoying, it's the only problem left. If the halo was fixed Mass Effect 2 would have a 3D ready stamp. But NVIDIA IS TOO INCOMPETENT TO FIX IT. These guys have so much power in their hands but they don't know how to use it. They think that the developers of these other companies have to fix all the problems, and sure I agree with that. But if you want to sell glasses you don't rest until every single game in that compatibility list is 3D ready all across the board. Then you start selling tons of glasses, the tech becomes popular. When you hook inject you ultimately have a LOT of control, it's only a matter of heart and persistence after that. I tried everything I possibly could to fix the halo. For some reason I think the halo is a side effect of the nvidia profile itself. I've tried renaming masseffect2.exe and the halo goes away but with other problems emerging. Profiling should not only be done by the nvidia but the community should be able to profile as well. It's foolish not to share non-critical workload with the community.
I'm definitely looking forward to ME3 since the new unreal engine supports stereoscopic 3d out of the box. There is no excuse for that dumb pathetic excuse of a company Bioware not to implement stereo 3D in Mass Effect 3. Also if NVIDIA had some sharp reps they could easily contact Bioware setup an hour demo and convince them to support 3D and give them a free pair of glasses.

you said "The res can be changed in the game itself." The fact is, that I HAVE to HAVE to have my desktop AND game...BOTH set to 1280x720 or wtvr it is. If the desktop is not set the same resolution as the game then I get the stupid red writing warning "trying to run game in non 3d mode" or whatever.

So the only reason you're worried about the res of the desktop and and the res of the game is matching is because you're worried you'll get spammed in game with a warning message?
When you get the warning message does the game still appear in 3D or does the 3D not work at all?

I am using some 110 dollar screen. don't remember the type. Yes the 3d is still working...but the message is constantly in the "way." I solve this by matching my desktop res with the in game res and it is fine.

2. Are you using a CRT screen at 120hz? The old school monitors?
3. I always get a stupid warning message when I turned on/off the 3d laser crosshair. I had to hex edit the message out in the DLL because NVIDIA are too freaking stupid to make a simple checkbox that disables nvidia warning message spam during gameplay. Their devs may be experienced in 3D but they have no clue about interfaces, gui's, hotkey systems, ease of use and all other 95/100 things that make a programmer a good programmer. I bet if I took one look at their code, none of it would be commented.

I am using some 110 dollar screen. don't remember the type. Yes the 3d is still working...but the message is constantly in the "way." I solve this by matching my desktop res with the in game res and it is fine.

Pretty sure he is talking about projector screens, you know once you have DLP setup it's easy to forget about everything else. /yes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

1 - with all of the tweaks ive read about on these forums, can I make MAss Effect 2 look as good as mass effect 1? If i can tweak some things like i've read about here...then I will be happy if it looks as good as part 1. Does it?

1. Go to folder: Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect\Config
2. Open BioInput.INI in notepad.
3. Add this line under: [BIOC_Base.BioPlayerInput]
Bindings=(Name="4",InputMode=BIO_INPUT_MODE_NONE,Command="ShowHud",Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False).

Summary

Bah It just shows what kind of company they are, they replaced the somewhat inadequate planet exploring with this derp, and they even have those derp loading screens.

1- Is this "halo" effect or thing that CANNOT be fixed (well it can...but you said it just won't be) THAT bad? Will I enjoy the game or is it in EVERY image I look at?

I dont quite follow you here. Only because to play 3d on my projector resolution HASX to be 1200x700 or whatever. but you say 1600. I can't do that. I have to have my desktop AND in game res to the 1200x700 ish.
Thank you greatly for your thoughtful reply. It will make my little space adventures so much more kick ass! oh and are you looking forward to ME3? Think it will be good in 3d?

ME1
When you aim in the distance don't you see double on the crosshair?

Thanks for all the fun feedback!
you said "The res can be changed in the game itself." The fact is, that I HAVE to HAVE to have my desktop AND game...BOTH set to 1280x720 or wtvr it is.

Just curious what kind of screen you're using?

I am using some 110 dollar screen. don't remember the type. Yes the 3d is still working...but the message is constantly in the "way." I solve this by matching my desktop res with the in game res and it is fine.
1. Did you tell NVIDIA about this?
Pretty sure he is talking about projector screens, you know once you have DLP setup it's easy to forget about everything else.

I see. Why would he get an nvidia warning message if 3D is working fine when the desktop res and in game res is different?
