I'd say look on Nvidia's compatibility list. Start reading reviews on all the sets with the specs you're looking for. Specifically, read about crosstalk levels for each TV, as that will be the most important factor for a good 3d experience imo.

I own a lower end Vizio passive 3dtv which works fine for what I do with it (family viewing) minimal, almost no, crosstalk. Though, with passive there is the lower rez. But they also make higher end active TV sets as well. All are supported by Nvidia now.

The best anyone can do around here is share experience with their own TV's.

Do the research. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Yeah, checkerboard mode, that's it. CB is the only way to get 1920x1080 native res at full framerate. None of the 3DTVs other than some samsungs and Mits DLPs support CB mode, so these two are effectively the only choices.

>"I'd say look on Nvidia's compatibility list"

Ignore nvidia's compatibility list. It is woefully incmplete and therefore misleading. Most peeps are using 3DTV's under 3D Vision, but these 3DTVs are not on the 3D Vision list.

>" Specifically, read about crosstalk levels for each TV, as that will be the most important factor for a good 3d experience imo."

Disregard these reviews, they never test PC 3D gaming. Results based on broadcast video, Blu Ray 3D and such have no relevance to 3D gaming, so again, misleading.

Go to the samsung site and download the users manual for the 'es' series. Assume no support CB mode unless it specifically says it does support CB.

ok I vote this thread be a sticky... because buying the right/best TV for PC/3D vision IS THE MAJOR decision that affects experience... GTX 580 or 680 / amd or i7 vs whatever are meaningless cherrys on top of the cake... it's all about the display period.

I as well would always(from year to year) like to know what the BEST tv for 3dvision is...

This would be a very usefull sticky even given years from now if someone is looking at a used TV.. given of course that 3D format stays consistant.

ANyway, Right now I have a 2010 PN58C7000 samsung plasma and it's pretty good but I agree with roller personally... if it's not checkerboard then there is no point.

So question is then (1) right now who is making a modern TV with Checkerboard support? ANd on the heels of that (2) is plasma still the best solution or has LED caught up with regards ONLY to 3d vision hooked up to my PC using the TV as the monitor... I speak for myself but I do NOT care to discuss how the TV looks better when watching a DVD or BLUERAY etc or simply how it looks better watching TV. Could care even less about weight, size/thickness or ease of use in menus or power consumption etc etc etc... Focus here is on QUALITY 3D vision support.

So the apparently right now it comes down to sammy vs Mits... SO WHO IS BUILDING THE BETTER TV for 3d vision at the moment?

If you want the best 3DTV for gaming, I am sure you mean that you could play in 1080p60hz, and that's only possible with Samsung 3DTVs or DLP TVs that support Checkerboard which is supported by 3D Vision.

Many of us have used both 3DTV Play and 3D Vision. 3D Vision is a much better software and even if it's not full resolution per eye, Checkerboard 1080p60hz looks beyond better compared to ugly scaled 3DTV Play's 720p60hz. I'm sure you won't be able to game at 1080p24hz, will you???? So with 3DTV Play you're stuck at 720p in a big screen, so you'll see pixalizing effect and ugly image. I've used both and I have experience with both 3DTV Play and 3D Vision's checkerboard, so that's my opinion.

I also know that Libertine and Roller are not very good friends for some comments of them that I read in this forum, but to my understanding Libertine has never tried Rollermod and Checkerboard before cause his TV, I think it's Panasonic or Sony which doesn't support CB, so he can't test it and give us his opinion about checkerboard compared to 3DTV Play.

So, seeing is believing, which is a much more trusted source than assuming. If I were you I would hear the opinion of users that have tried both 3DTV Play and 3D Vision's CB, so you'll know what TV to buy.

I didn't want to be misleading... I just stated the process I went through when buying my TV. I went to the compatibility list since I wanted no hassels with edid overrides or anything else.

So... what reviews are we suppoesed to read regarding crosstalk levels for TV's? If no one tests gaming on them for reviews, then it wouldn't matter what they reviewed. They would all be the same, so buy the one that has least crosstalk for blu ray, broadcast or whatever. I support the checkerboard idea if you can find one. They're getting rare. buy a used DLP then...

Crosstalk tests are perfectly valid for indicating the "relative difference" in crosstalk between different models with a few caveats, like the HX929 did really bad on a black/white color test but it actually has very low amounts of crosstalk in real world use. Televisioninfo.com actually goes over different amounts of crosstalk for various colors in their crosstalk tests.

Im sure CB is better, but if your interested in accuracy, saying 720p is "ugly" just isn't accurate IMO and its not something i would say to give someone the info to make their own informed buying decision. You might remember my last monitor was a 2560x1600 30", thats what im used to and I've been playing The Witcher 2 for the last week and it looks beautiful 720p, as most games do. I just so happened to switch to 1080p last night to see what it looked like and the difference between 720p and and unscaled 1080p was somewhat disappointingly small. Maybe Sony has a really great scaling algorithm, i don't know.

One thing to keep in mind when buying a 2D or 3D Display for gaming is input lag.

When using a Display that has a bad input lag, things like precision jumping become very difficult.

Ahh, good point. I thought my TV had input lag, then I found an option on it called "game mode". Turned that on, and viola! No input lag. I get input lag when I turn on the TV's interpolated image smoothing for movies. My tv is cheapo, so I would assume most more expensive TV's are similar even if they call "game mode" something different in the menu.

Yes, switching to game mode, renaming the HDMI input to PC, or using a specific HDMI port that is designated for gaming by the manufacturer, are all things that need to be paid attention to for an improved gaming experience.

While these solutions can make terrible input lag better, in some cases better, is still terrible.

On the LG Passive TV I was using, the input lag was reduced by renaming the input to PC. The thing was that I'd be playing and notice that my input lag was increasing. I'd have to pause the game, switch to another input and back to rectify it. But even at it's best, I found it too sluggish and returned it. That was my experience, a subsequent firmware may have improved it, who knows.

I'd have to pause the game, switch to another input and back to rectify it. But even at it's best, I found it too sluggish and returned it. That was my experience, a subsequent firmware may have improved it, who knows.

I have a Samsung C7000 Plasma 3DTV and I always play games in the PC mode required for Rollermod to work under Checkerboard. I'm not sure why Game mode is greyd out in PC mode, but it's selectable in video mode. Maybe it's because what D-Man11 has just mentioned, that using the HDMI input as PC already corrects the input lag issue so no need for Game mode.
When I tried 3DTV Play a few times trying to play games at 1080p24hz cause I can't stand 720p60hz, I always enabled Game mode, cause 3DTV Play frame packing only works under Video mode, not PC mode. Video mode has better colours compared to PC though.

I'm not sure, but does Plasma have better input lag compared to LCD/LED TVs???

It really depends on the post processing that is applied to the incoming signal, which can vary significantly due to proprietary technologies of each manufacturer.

But yes, Plasma TVs are inherently faster are are less prone to motion blur.

Here's a decent article explaining the technology used in Plasmas and OLED Displays as well as their shortcomings.
