Samsung PN50B450
  1 / 3
I was at my local 6th Ave Electronics and saw the Samsung PN50B450 plasma for $900. The picture/colors were amazing. Plasmas still rule as far as color reproduction and no pixelation that I saw. Then low and behold I saw the rear in/outs and I saw the 3d sync connector. Measurements are 48.1x29x2.9. Awesome price!!!! I might just pick this up for 3dvision/pc gaming. Anybody has this set with 3dvision? So the resolution in 3d games would be 1360x768? Any overscan.

Yup. I have one of these and for gaming I have to say it's awesome, if you don't mind the 1360x768 resolution.
(It supports 1920x1080 in 2d though)

I'm sitting about 10 feet back on my couch and the only thing I've had a problem with is being able to read
certain text in 3d mode, most likely due to the checkerboard pattern it uses for 3d.

Other than that, it's literally mind blowing in terms of how much pop out you can achieve in certain games/apps.

Beautiful t.v for the price you can't really go wrong, get it now, enjoy it and then when the super nice 3d displays come
out in a year or two, grab another :D

Edit: A thought on the ghosting. Hardly any issues, especially once you get the settings right. Just beautiful.

Best Buy has it for $850 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...;ci_sku=9239371. You can probably get it for $800 if you know how to bargain.

Also since the native res is 1365x768, this should make most games run at least 60fps rather than the 1680x1050 on the Samsung and Viewsonic 22" 120hz monitors, especially if you are running a GTX 260 or above SLI setup or a single GTX 295.

Personally I wouldn't run this as my main monitor for regular Windows. Too much power draw and not enough resolution. I'm using my Asus 25.6 lcd monitor connected to the first DVI output of the main card and then would have the plasma connected to the second DVI output and switch primary monitors/SLI focus between Windows/gaming.

Firstly, its a great HDTV in general I use it as my primary TV and I love it for Blu-ray, HDTV, Xbox, etc.

Secondly, it will take some serious tweaking to get working properly, and is not as user friendly as the 22" Samsung. (You have to enable 3D Mode in the TV's menu every time you want to use it.)

I don't believe its 3D gaming performance is as good as the Samsung 22". For example, in my experience in Resident Evil 5 ghosting is twice as obvious on the plasma than the 22". Also the aforementioned text issues.

It seems to me that watching 3D movies on it is just as good as the 22".

I will admit that I have not spent anytime tweaking the settings while in 3D mode (perhaps turning down brightness will help?). Just be aware that it will take some tweaking.

That said, I still think its a great TV for the price.

Hi, setting up profiles within the standard, movie and dynamic presets and using say dynamic for 3d can give you the best of everything with a few remote button presses, as not trapped to settings like the 22". Changing from mode 1 to mode 2 in the 3d settings can greatly increase the 3d effects in some applications/games/movies experiment 'one setting fits all' doesn't seem to be best. Avoid bright lights behind you as the screen seems to reflect this, in regard to ghosting I find very little and it is almost totally application dependent, further, due to the surface area of the screen being 4+ times larger than the 22", artifacts in the software will be 4+ times larger. Also, if used as a computer monitor for normal applications the fonts are almost unreadable unless you use HDMI2 set the name of this connection to PC and resolution to the native 1368x768, in which case you will get a very pleasant surprise and the fonts will now be as clear as an LCD for normal computer use (I have both).

Aside from this the picture quality, contrast and colours are vastly better than LCD, and the 1368x768@60Hz x2=120Hz 3d picture wipes out all pixilation and is greatly superior to 1080x1920@60Hz in 2d on this or LCD screens, for that matter also check 2d performance of games at 1080x1920 compared to this same resolution on capable LCDs, hands down the plasma wins, what I thought was a great picture on one of Samsung's most expensive LCDs is clearly inferior in motion and colour reprioduction. The 3d emmitter plugging directly into the TV to sync the glasses probably also is quite an advantage compared the latency and sync issues experienced by the double rate DVI connection of the LCDs.

I game at about 5-6 feet distance and am very impressed with this TV despite its' ridiculously cheap price.

Well for one I turned down the cell light to about 3. Sure the picture
get's a little darker but it's not that bat at all. I also turned down
digital vibrance in the Nvidia control panel. That made a huge difference
in terms of ghosting -almost got rid of it completely ! Other than that
I just messed with the contrast/brightness and mode until I found
something that looked the best.

The pop out is ridiculous ! Some things come about 5 feet out into
my living room as though they're hovering above my coffee table!

Hey MorSage thanks for the tips eh? I'm going to rename my
connection to PC, as right now it's named Game, and see
if that makes a difference to the text.

Again, it looks great watching the demo movies in 3D, but games like RE5 and NFS Shift look terrible.

Just a curiosity, when you press "info" on the remote, while running 3D, does it say 30Hz, 60Hz or 120Hz?

Your in "checkerboard" mode right?

Can't wait till i get my hands on this Samsung. Batman on a 50inch should rock! ;) Let's hope they will still be available by januari. I'm guessing the next 3d ready tv's would be more expensive becuase of the hype around 3d blu ray.

Man it makes me jealous reading this thread. I love 3D Vision and I have an awesome Plasma TV and it's not 3D Ready.
I have the Samsung 22" monitor that I use to play with 3D Vision. It was the best choice I made in years regarding games. I can almost imagine what would be the sensation playing 3D in a 50"inch TV.
I don't get it why there are only two old Plasma models that are 3d Ready???
My Plasma is a Panasonic FULL HD 50" TH50PZ80 and it's a much better and more expensive TV than those Samsung models, but unfortunately it ain't 3D ready like all the others Plasmas in stores .
I also love Plasma TV's and think they kick ass, way better than any LCD screens out there. Mine stays next to my PC and until I had 3d Vision I thought It was awesome to play games in thta huge perfect screen. But now since I migrated to the 3D game world I can no longer play in 2D even in a 50" inches TV. I think that 3D is so freaking awesome that now I only use my TV for BD and HDTV, games must be played with 3D Vision and the 22" Samsung from now on.
I envy you guys, it must be awesome the pop out effects in those Plasmas Tv's.

Hm I'm pretty sure it says 60hz, but I'll have to double check that.. (from what I understand
it's 60hz for each eye with this t.v?)

And yes, checkerboard mode. And for 3d mode, I usually just use mode 1.

And to anyone thinking about buying this t.v -don't expect it to work flawless out of the box, be
prepared to tweak the settings to find that sweet spot. Once you do though, you're laughing..

I have to agree, at first I was getting quite dissapointed... the ghosting was a horrible bright greenish shade but after using some of your settings I'm getting closer and its looking incredible to say the least.

I'm noticing all bright scenes have 0 ghosting or if the tv brightness is kicked up 100% ghosting is almost non existant. I tried your nvidia setting also.

I'm trying to wash out the "percieved" colors of the ghosting while preserving as much true color as possible.

I read some where there was a way to enable all the picture settings on the TV like you can with the other HDMI inputs, is this true? I'm going to go as far as trying to color cellophane to the "percieved" ghosting color as a test to see if I can remove it physicaly than go from there.

Do you have any further tips on RGB settings, brightness/contrast levels?
