GTX680 Do I need it? A question I may regret asking.
I have 2 GTX 470's and they have been good to me. Is it neccessary to upgrade to the 680's? Am I reading the wattage on the 680's right? It looks like I should be able to use my same power supply that I use on my 470's (950 watts). I don't OC. I posted this here because I "know" you guys and I trust your opinions most.

I am getting one but I dont recommend it. Its almost always a bad idea to be early adopter as far as tech. goes. I am getting them because I want to sell my 580.
However if you sell used cards its probably a good idea since your old cards they will probably be worth a lot less soon or if you don't mind buying used cards 580's / 590's will be worth less soon.
The price on 680's won't go up. 680's also need good cooling to be optimized. It clocks itself based on its cooling from what I understand. So while you see these AMAZING specs that people are able to push out your system based on cooling/location, and most people who are getting them now are the enthusiasts with good cooling.

Me too, if mine knew how much I spent she would absolutely kill me /fear.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':fear:' />
I'm thinking of upgrading my GPU, CPU, Motherboard & Ram, and maybe a 3Dvision 2 kit with Monitor (although that can maybe wait). Would it still be worth going SLI with the 680?

I guess that depends on the setup you have (plan to buy). If it's a kit with just one monitor then you should be good for a while (I think).

I saw the review and I loved it..... But I am running two 570s in SLI at the moment and cannot afford to spend 1000 on two replacement cards. At this point if you have the cash go for it, but I wouldn't suggest breaking the bank to get it.

why you sellin your 580? Why not just buy another for much cheaper than a 680? X2 580's will vastly out perform a single 680.

2 580's = $800-850 1 680=$500
I paid 440 for a 580 like a week and a half ago. Returned it 3 days ago for 440. For an extra 60 I can get a 680 instead.
That and high speed hdmi port MAY find some use when someone gets around to implementing some devices.

Running Just Cause 2 maxed in 3d with over 30 fps and temps never rise over 75c! So yea 680 is practically perfect and will only get better with newer drivers....still can't run ubersampling in witcher 2, averaging 15-20 FPS ....but that's what sli is for!

GTX 570 SLI is still a tad faster. at least on sli supported games.

So, as GTX 570 and GTX 480 are about the same in performance, I can say that having 2 GTX 480 in SLI would be the same as 1 GTX 680???
I think I'll wait for another year with my 2 cards, cause I can play all games with settings maxed out + 3D Vision having my SLI GTX 480 rig. I don't use Surround, so I'm not sure if I would really need all that power that 2 GTX 680 in SLI would provide. I'll wait for the upgraded version, GTX 685 or GTX 690 dual core.

Even on non-supported games, 570/480 SLI should be faster since 3D Vision with SLI basically handles like explicit stereo rendering with each GPU tasked to render each eye view.

I'm personally holding off on upgrading for BigK, 1x680 isn't faster than 2x480 SLI for anything and 2x680 isn't a big enough upgrade at the asking price imo. The only major benefit imo is the decreased power draw compared to the 480s which would be great in the summer months, but not worth upgrading imo.

I have 2 GTX 470's and they have been good to me. Is it neccessary to upgrade to the 680's? Am I reading the wattage on the 680's right? It looks like I should be able to use my same power supply that I use on my 470's (950 watts). I don't OC. I posted this here because I "know" you guys and I trust your opinions most.

question to you is:

Do your current cards provide at least 60FPS on max graphics settings for the games you play? If not, go ahead and upgrade. If you are still getting decent framerates and can run games like Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 no prob, just keeping using them.

I think I'll hold off for now. I'll give it another year (two if I'm lucky). Thanks for all the input.

I was able to play Crysis 2 with settings maxed out and having 60fps most of the time having 2 GTX 480 in SLI. BF3 is a heavier game and I got a 40fps average, but I felt this game was very playable and I didn't fell any lagging and gameplay was smoother enough in my opinion. I think I'll wait a few more months before I decide to upgrade to 680s. Batman AC was also very playable with settings maxed out and 45fps average using 3D Vision + 2x480 in SLI.
