Headsets that are comfy with 3D glasses?
  1 / 2
I've been getting into some online games where i really want to use voice chat, so i'm going to be ordering a headset this week. I was on newegg looking at a couple different headsets, mainly circumarual ones (the bigger, noise-cancelling ones that fit all the way over the ears), and then i remember how uncomfortable it was to wear my old set of supra-aural "on ear" headphones because they would push my ears against the hard, thick and generally uncomfortable arms of the 3dvision glasses. So i started to wonder if circumaural headphones would be uncomfortable too, or if the arms of the glasses will hold the cups away from my head and there wont be as good of audio because there isnt that seal around them against the head.

So anyways, i've been using a set of nice sennheiser canal headphones for the past year or so because theyre the most comfortable style for with these glasses on. But I cant really find a decent canal HEADSET, so i'm wondering if other ppl have recommendations. Or is anyone owns these two headsets, which are the two i was looking at the most before i remembered how much it sucks to wear headphones with the glasses:

sennheiser PC151
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106157

the sennheisers are similar is size/style to the headphones i mentioned that were really uncomfortable to wear with glasses, so i'm mainly looking at the circuimaural creative models i guess...

I'm pretty close to just cutting off the arms of the glasses and rigging up some more comfortable way of attaching them to my head.

I went through a similar search and ultimately decided that no headsets, circumaural or supraural, would be comfortable enough to use with 3D Vision glasses. I went with a pair of decent quality ear buds with an integrated mic instead. A few downsides to note:

1) these are not USB so you need a sound card or onboard audio for both voice input and output
2) they use 4-pole 3.5mm connector so you also need an adapter (link at bottom)
3) with both ear buds inserted, most noise is blocked/cancelled by design so you don't hear yourself talking into the mic. Somewhat awkward in practice.

Overall I've been pretty happy with this solution, although voice chat without hearing yourself definitely takes some time getting used to. Its like covering both your ears or talking under water. Here's the links to the stuff I got, the ear buds were significantly cheaper when I got them.

Thats kinda what i was afraid of. I'll probably just try picking up one of those ~$10 logitech PC mics at walmart and pair it up with the sennheiser canal headphones i'm currently using and see how that works out. I'd really prefer a headset, but oh well, not going to have them and the glasses make me feel like my heads in a vice.

I find myself having the glasses sit above the cups of the headset, though awkward at first, it's much more comfortable than having it tucked in your ears, inside the cups of the headset.

Yeah i've done that in the past. The problem is that with the lenses angled like that, you get glare from the ceiling and, in my case, the ceiling is white so yeah a good bit of glare. it also seems like the tint to the lenses is more noticeable when viewed that way

I wear eyeglasses + 3D vision glasses + Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones
It's normally very comfortable.

After 2-3 hours, my ears start to become a little uncomfortable. Happens with and without glasses.

Here's a review of the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 headset (which are very similiar to my DT 880 headphones)

They are expensive but quality is very good.

So you just wear the headphones ON the glasses instead of resting the arms on top of the cups, and it's comfortable? Maybe its a difference in head size, because i barely find the glasses comfortable to wear just by themselves.

I think I'm leaning towards the Sennheisers since they sit on the ear and I could more easily rest the arms on top of the cups, as mentioned above, if need be.

Although i'm really really thinking about taking a dremel and cutting the arms off just past where that bulge is on the left side and then making some sort of hole/slit on both sides that i could loop some elastic band through... if this wasnt my only set of glasses and if the didnt cost so much, i would have already done it.

Interesting point. I just tried wearing the 3D vision glasses without my regular glasses ...
and to my surprise, it's a little more comfortable while wearing both glasses than only wearing 3D glasses.
The reason is because the arms of the 3D vision glasses sit on top of the arms of my regular glasses.
Since I wear regular glasses, maybe my ears are less bothered by glasses.
I also notice that having longer hair seems to increase comfort.

Yes, my headphones are very comfortable. Wearing all 3 right now.
Arms of both glasses are inside the headphone cups, same as how this guy wears them.

One final thought ... I am using the big nose piece on the 3D glasses. Maybe a different nose piece will increase comfort.
You could try wrapping the arms of the 3D glasses in something more comfortable.

Another problem with this method is that it results in severe ghosting/crosstalk in some games due to the polarization of the lenses; I used to do it this way with my Sennheiser RS-130, which have rather large circumaural earpods until I played Mafia 2 and saw extreme crosstalk at the top and bottom of screen. Could've swore it was a problem with the game and even documented it here and elsewhere. Turned out it was because I had my glasses tilted forward, put them on straight on and the troublesome crosstalk was gone (mostly).

The supraural suggestion would probably be the best bet I guess. You guys can also try putting some rubber sound dampening foam on the tips of the 3D Glasses. I found that helps considerably with comfort over time, but if you have a pair of cans resting on top of that it still gets uncomfortable after some time.

It's the same for me. I have my usual glasses and the 3D ones sit on top of them and I have no issues. When I tried to wear only the 3D ones, they started to hurt in less than 30 minutes. I guess having the normal glasses under them helps with the pressure they create with those cheap-feeling plastic endings. For sounds, I use an old pair of Altec Lansing headphones, which sit comfortably on top of the two pair of glasses and I can game for hours without any need to stop.

I've gone through about 3 headsets since getting my 3D vision. All of them have had large ear pieces like full earmuff type things (whatever you wanna call them =P). I also wear NORMAL glasses AND 3D Vision Glasses, and out of the 3, only one of them was uncomfortable and actually caused some pain because it was too tight. The other 2 were a Creative Labs headset I forgot the name of and my new one is Gamecom Plantronics, these 2 caused me no problems or pain at all, I regularly use 3D Vision for up to 10 hours at a time with no problems.

TBH tho, most peoples heads are different sizes and ears are different sizes, all you can do is try some headsets and see what feels more comfortable.

I use the Corsair HS1 headset, and it is very comfortable with the glasses under the head set. Actualy more comfotable than using the glasses on there own because the relieve some of the pressure on the bridge of my nose by squeazing ever so slightly on the arms of the glasses. If that makes sense.

You can find comfortable headsets. I have the Creative Aurvana Live, and they are really comfy. Only 2.0 stereo, but the sound is decent. I also have the Psyko Carbon 5.1 headset, with much better sound but then its just a tad uncomfortable.

I ordered the Sennheisers yesterday, found then for $40 on amazon and that seems like a really solid deal. Plus i've come to trust the Sennheiser brand with previous headphones and microphones i've ordered always being top notch quality for the price and all.

I think they will be more comfortable than having bigger circumaurals resting on the glasses and pushing them harder into my skull. I actually found that if i wear my one deeper baseball hat that i can put the glasses on and have the tips of the arms rest on it, instead of pinching into the soft flesh above/behind my ears. the glasses have to be tilted slightly like mentioned before, but not that much at all cause of how low the hat sits, so I'm thinking the headset will be ok to wear with this method.

If not i'm fully prepared to cut the glasses down where that weird green plastic stuff starts (at least where it WAS before it came off the glasses) and attach them to my head with a strap of some sort.

Well, got the Sennheisers today. They pretty nice, esp for the price. The build quality on the frame is questionable, theyre definitely light fragile plastic that I know i woudlnt want to travel with, but thats fine with me. on the flipside they're comfortable, and because of how they sit on the ear they dont really interfere with the glasses like i thought they would. The mic picks up really well too.
