Mine works. I did the pin ripping thing. I dont even think you need a different inf file, but I loaded the hacked optoma inf. It works fine with nvidia. It does take a lot of messing with to get the nvidia software to believe it can do it. I just dont like the idea that a 720p signal gets stretched across 800 lines. This will change that.

I'm running mine at 1280x800x120HZ too. Just used a VGA cable. I don't think you have to use a different inf either, as it's picked up as a generic CRT in 3d vision. The results are great, especially as you can set all the picture settings up for each input, so you can tweak the vga input setting just to make 3d content look better.
I would still have liked to compare it to a H5360 before I bought it but it looks great to me and it's very bright too :-)

The 16:9 unscaled mode is only available in the network config page, after firmware update.
So you need a 32bit xp machine and a usb cable. You need to hold down the power button and the menu and enter buttons until it turns on and then the two red lights flash - then it is ready for the firmware upload.

This does not work for me. I did use an XP machine and it gets to the end of the firmware process and hangs. I did it several times and it simply will never complete. Also, when you check the firmware revision in the menu, its not 1.47. I also do not see 16:9 in the network menu, it still just says 16:10 or 4:3. Several other people have said they cannot get through the firmware process either. I cannot. I think it may depend on the firmware you are coming from. I bet it doesnt work for some. My box has a september 2010 date on the bottom. I hear that if its earlier than august 2010 you need to RMA the thing to get the firmware fixed. Even though mine is later, i still cannot get it to work. The absence of true 16:9 is a huge screw up. To send this out day 1 without this was retarded for viewsonic. If you read the updated specs on the viewsonic page, they never claim it can do 16:9. They only say it gives a true 16:10 format. Well, too bad nothing is 16:10. They even expected vga signals to be 1280x720 and get stretched. They should have just used a 1280x720 chip in the first place. I am trying to get through tech support now to see what their official position on this is. No luck so far.

It does sound like there's something wierd going on with the firmware update. I haven't even tried on mine to be honest. I've noticed that the specs on the website have changed as well regarding 16:9 and 16:10.
What you say about stretching via VGA is not something I've encountered though. Via HDMI or VGA from the PC it's correctly identified as 1280x800 native, which is 16:10, but playing 16:9 videos from the pc results in a 16:9 image as only 720 pixels are utilized vertically.
It only seems to be 720p via HDMI (for blueray etc.) that is forcibly scaled up to 1280x800 and therefore stretched to 16:10.
The only way I managed to get proper native 16:10 1280x800x120hz in 3d was via a VGA cable and generic crt as you mentioned though. Are you going via VGA for that or DVI/HDMI? I just couldn't get that to work even after hours of messing around with inf files and reg hacks etc.
Also, something that's been mentioned on other threads and reviews is a 'whistling' noise from the projector. Mine seems to do this as well. Is it just because it's a 2x colour wheel or should I RMA my projector? Opinions would be welcome!

Yes, I am using the generic vga for 3d. I hear the new nvidia driver is different for this pj, but I dont want to get rid of my edid rig if its working. I dont think hdmi can even support 720p at 120hz by the way.

I have RMA'd 2x 6531w projectors for faulty projection issues, urelated to S3D. The third one I have stuck with.
I have been using the VGA cable method with the pin id removed with my modified inf (bottom of my original post), to install a "generic" display (non-PNP if I recall correctly).
I have "upgraded" to 2x GTX 470 SLI, and have been happy for months after playing many games in perfect S3D.
I simply gave up on the HDMI aspect ratio and instead invested in a very high quality VGA cable, which performs almost as well, if not as well, to play at 1280x800 @ 120Hz in perfect aspect ratio.
There is no whining noise from my unit.
It would be cool if someone can confirm if ViewSonic are accepting returns for upgrading the firmware which allows proper aspect ratios.
A big brain fart from ViewSonic on this one. I tried to explain it to them months back, but they wouldn't even listen - ignored my emails with detailed explanations etc.

I am confused as to what you mean. My problem is hdmi is stretched. If you have a vga cable, that means you are coming from a computer right? I cant do that as I am not running cable into my computer then to my tv. Do you mean you got an hdmi to vga adapter of some kind to fix the aspect ratio.

Just to clarify, I'm using VGA as well, for 1280x800@120hz. I was concerned about drivers, but I've upgraded to the latest WHQL drivers and everything still works perfectly. Via VGA it's picked up as a generic CRT. Depth adjustment is better through VGA than via HDMI and the 'depth hack' (batch file) still works anyway if you need it. I was running the 260.63 beta without issue, but I have to say that since going to the latest drivers just cause 2 and battlefield bc2 run so much better it's amazing.. that's on my single gtx470. I was getting good GPU usage before anyway, but the newest drivers are silky smooth :-)
I'll have to ring viewsonic about the whining noise then. If you look around the net and on the MTBS3D forums there are people complaining about the whining/whistling noise. Mine's there all the time and while I can put up with it just fine I was just wondering if it's normal for this model or if there's something wrong with my unit.

Just to clarify, I'm using VGA as well, for 1280x800@120hz. I was concerned about drivers, but I've upgraded to the latest WHQL drivers and everything still works perfectly. Via VGA it's picked up as a generic CRT. Depth adjustment is better through VGA than via HDMI and the 'depth hack' (batch file) still works anyway if you need it. Thanks for the update mate. Like I said in my previous comment I'm still curious as to how the Acer would compare, but I console myself with the extra vertical resolution, the extra warranty, the free bulb I got and the apparently better brightness. I really like the viewsonic but like you say, for the sake of better firmware they could have easily made this 'THE' projector from what I've seen.

I think he means that in 3d mode you just don't seem to be able to do anything other than 1280x720 via HDMI. The projector of course stretches this up to 1280x800 which distorts the aspect ratio.
Actually, via HDMI from any device other than a PC, the image is stretched.
Unfortunately you just can't go from HDMI to VGA. You can go from DVI to VGA but you need a DVI-I cable and adaptor rather than a DVI-D cable (I think) which is quite pricey.

Unfortunately you just can't go from HDMI to VGA. You can go from DVI to VGA but you need a DVI-I cable and adaptor rather than a DVI-D cable (I think) which is quite pricey.

I have followed the firmware instructions in the Viewsonic download and on this discussion and I was able to flash my projector without errors except for the failed reboot, however, like the others I still see 16:10 instead of 16:9 in the network remote utility. I was wondering if either of you two remember if when you flashed your projectors if you selected the option to skip the 32Kb boot sector as per the Viewsonic instructions? I am trying to figure out why this update works for some and not others and I was wondering if the boot skip check box that Viewsonic says to check might be the difference. Also, my projector is brand new, January 2011 manufacture date.

Mine works. I did the pin ripping thing. I dont even think you need a different inf file, but I loaded the hacked optoma inf. It works fine with nvidia. This does not work for me. I did use an XP machine and it gets to the end of the firmware process and hangs. I did it several times and it simply will never complete. Also, when you check the firmware revision in the menu, its not 1.47. I also do not see 16:9 in the network menu, it still just says 16:10 or 4:3. Several other people have said they cannot get through the firmware process either. I cannot. I think it may depend on the firmware you are coming from. I bet it doesnt work for some. My box has a september 2010 date on the bottom. I hear that if its earlier than august 2010 you need to RMA the thing to get the firmware fixed. Even though mine is later, i still cannot get it to work. The absence of true 16:9 is a huge screw up. To send this out day 1 without this was retarded for viewsonic. If you read the updated specs on the viewsonic page, they never claim it can do 16:9. They only say it gives a true 16:10 format. Well, too bad nothing is 16:10. They even expected vga signals to be 1280x720 and get stretched. They should have just used a 1280x720 chip in the first place. I am trying to get through tech support now to see what their official position on this is. No luck so far.

It does sound like there's something wierd going on with the firmware update. I haven't even tried on mine to be honest. I've noticed that the specs on the website have changed as well regarding 16:9 and 16:10.
What you say about stretching via VGA is not something I've encountered though. Via HDMI or VGA from the PC it's correctly identified as 1280x800 native, which is 16:10, but playing 16:9 videos from the pc results in a 16:9 image as only 720 pixels are utilized vertically.
It only seems to be 720p via HDMI (for blueray etc.) that is forcibly scaled up to 1280x800 and therefore stretched to 16:10.
The only way I managed to get proper native 16:10 1280x800x120hz in 3d was via a VGA cable and generic crt as you mentioned though. Are you going via VGA for that or DVI/HDMI? I just couldn't get that to work even after hours of messing around with inf files and reg hacks etc.
Also, something that's been mentioned on other threads and reviews is a 'whistling' noise from the projector. Mine seems to do this as well. Is it just because it's a 2x colour wheel or should I RMA my projector? Opinions would be welcome!

I have RMA'd 2x 6531w projectors for faulty projection issues, urelated to S3D. The third one I have stuck with.
I have been using the VGA cable method with the pin id removed with my modified inf (bottom of my original post), to install a "generic" display (non-PNP if I recall correctly).
I have "upgraded" to 2x GTX 470 SLI, and have been happy for months after playing many games in perfect S3D.
I simply gave up on the HDMI aspect ratio and instead invested in a very high quality VGA cable, which performs almost as well, if not as well, to play at 1280x800 @ 120Hz in perfect aspect ratio.
There is no whining noise from my unit.
It would be cool if someone can confirm if ViewSonic are accepting returns for upgrading the firmware which allows proper aspect ratios.
A big brain fart from ViewSonic on this one. I tried to explain it to them months back, but they wouldn't even listen - ignored my emails with detailed explanations etc.

Just to clarify, I'm using VGA as well, for 1280x800@120hz. I was concerned about drivers, but I've upgraded to the latest WHQL drivers and everything still works perfectly. Via VGA it's picked up as a generic CRT. Depth adjustment is better through VGA than via HDMI and the 'depth hack' (batch file) still works anyway if you need it. I was running the 260.63 beta without issue, but I have to say that since going to the latest drivers just cause 2 and battlefield bc2 run so much better it's amazing.. that's on my single gtx470. I was getting good GPU usage before anyway, but the newest drivers are silky smooth :-)

Just to clarify, I'm using VGA as well, for 1280x800@120hz. I was concerned about drivers, but I've upgraded to the latest WHQL drivers and everything still works perfectly. Via VGA it's picked up as a generic CRT. Depth adjustment is better through VGA than via HDMI and the 'depth hack' (batch file) still works anyway if you need it. I was running the 260.63 beta without issue, but I have to say that since going to the latest drivers just cause 2 and battlefield bc2 run so much better it's amazing.. that's on my single gtx470. Like I said in my previous comment I'm still curious as to how the Acer would compare, but I console myself with the extra vertical resolution, the extra warranty, the free bulb I got and the apparently better brightness. I really like the viewsonic but like you say, for the sake of better firmware they could have easily made this 'THE' projector from what I've seen.

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. This thread never took off in the early stages so I never gave it an update. Till today that is. By chance, I decided to catch up on the nVidia forums where it seemed to have got to FP.
I hope that someone may still find this post useful.
Updates:
I have RMA'd 2x 6531w projectors for faulty projection issues, urelated to S3D. The third one I have stuck with.
I have been using the VGA cable method with the pin id removed with my modified inf (bottom of my original post), to install a "generic" display (non-PNP if I recall correctly).
I have "upgraded" to 2x GTX 470 SLI, and have been happy for months after playing many games in perfect S3D.
I simply gave up on the HDMI aspect ratio and instead invested in a very high quality VGA cable, which performs almost as well, if not as well, to play at 1280x800 @ 120Hz in perfect aspect ratio.
There is no whining noise from my unit.
It would be cool if someone can confirm if ViewSonic are accepting returns for upgrading the firmware which allows proper aspect ratios.
A big brain fart from ViewSonic on this one. I tried to explain it to them months back, but they wouldn't even listen - ignored my emails with detailed explanations etc.

Thanks for the update mate. Like I said in my previous comment I'm still curious as to how the Acer would compare, but I console myself with the extra vertical resolution, the extra warranty, the free bulb I got and the apparently better brightness. I am confused as to what you mean. My problem is hdmi is stretched. If you have a vga cable, that means you are coming from a computer right? I cant do that as I am not running cable into my computer then to my tv. Do you mean you got an hdmi to vga adapter of some kind to fix the aspect ratio.

I think he means that in 3d mode you just don't seem to be able to do anything other than 1280x720 via HDMI. The projector of course stretches this up to 1280x800 which distorts the aspect ratio.
Actually, via HDMI from any device other than a PC, the image is stretched.
Unfortunately you just can't go from HDMI to VGA. You can go from DVI to VGA but you need a DVI-I cable and adaptor rather than a DVI-D cable (I think) which is quite pricey.
It's annoying as Windows 7 supports EID overrides by design, but the Nvidia drivers seems to completely ignore that. As much as I genuinely respect Nvidia and their software, this is poor as Microsoft deliberately allow you to do this yet it just doesn't work. In fact, by definition you could probably argue that it's a bug with the drivers..

I have followed the firmware instructions in the Viewsonic download and on this discussion and I was able to flash my projector without errors except for the failed reboot, however, like the others I still see 16:10 instead of 16:9 in the network remote utility. I was wondering if either of you two remember if when you flashed your projectors if you selected the option to skip the 32Kb boot sector as per the Viewsonic instructions? I am trying to figure out why this update works for some and not others and I was wondering if the boot skip check box that Viewsonic says to check might be the difference. Also, my projector is brand new, January 2011 manufacture date.

In answer to the folks at Viewsonic, it can do it, Wahim's screen shot proves that. You could send them the screen shot, but I doubt it would help because they want to believe it can't be done so they can leave their customers high and dry without help. Their assertion that it impossible to engineer is absurd, the 4:3 format that they do support works in just the way you describe, by blanking out pixels on the right and left of the screen. How sad that they resort to lies instead of just fixing the problem.

No, Not all 1280x800 projectors suffer the same problem as the Viewsonic.
