Yes the monitor dims in 3D mode.
But the dimness is cosiderably less on the new 3Dvision 2 version monitors :)
3D vision 1 was too dark in my opinion.
I never had a problem with this, I just upped the brightness in-game until it was normal again. The Lightboost feature on my monitor IS nice though.

EDIT: I quoted myself instead of editing the original. That was dumb LOL.

There used to be a gamma setting in the control panel, before '3D Vision', which used to work perfectly with my old H3D shutter glasses. When Stereoscopic 3D was enabled it just kicked up the gamma to what ever you set it to, the funny thing is the settings (StereoGamma & GammaAdjustMore/Less) are still in the registry ... they just don't do anything anymore ...
Does the monitor itself actually dim? Or is it just the fact that the glasses are shuttering which is blocking the light?
No the monitor actually dims..
It's a feature which reduces ghosting independent of the glasses dimness. Some people force it on in 2D mode too to reduce motion blur in games.
