I'm not sure head tracking will ever work properly in games not designed for VR: AFAIK, Mouse movement would never be able to account for head roll (mouse can only be mapped to pitch and yaw). This would kill immersion :(
Headtracking with mouse is just easiest way. Vorpx has some solution that doesn't even use mouse. I haven't tried it so I cant talk 100% about it since I haven't used it since DK1. Anywho I "BELIEVE" head roll works. ---------------------------- Regardless it doesn't have to be VR support in game. If its just a replacement for a stereoscopic monitor I believe many will be happy especially if resolution keeps increasing. Its a good alternative to a 1080p monitor as of now cause of lack of ghosting.

I am getting both Rift and the vive. But if I had to choose I would go for Rift. Much better launch titles imho. I am surprised that Valve doens't have any selfmade game yet. It just confirms my believe that they are not truely commited to VR.

Schmeltzer valve just announced the lab for VR. Check this use of room scaling out.... https://youtu.be/KirQtdsG5yE The fov of the oculus cameras has been leaked. Doesn't look good for rift room scaling, especially if you are going to be crawling on the floor like the guy in the game I just linked to. http://m.imgur.com/v5YnLCf

Vorpx emulates headtracking with mouse sensitivity, although it has its own configuration tools to fine tune headtracking until it feels almost as good as VR native games. I finished Bioshock 1 with DK2 and felt nearly VR native if you switched to walking, it was amazing to play it and felt like I was in Rapture, a whole new level over 3D Vision. I hope Nvidia makes 3D Vision work in VR, they are sitting on hundreds of 3D ready games, even more with helix patches. They just need to setup configuration tools ala Vorpx, or at least enable a room with a 100'' virtual screen to project 3d games. If not, third parties will do it anyway like Vorpx or Vireio, even more now that we can add profiles, their loss then.

This is an interesting video that's just been released from GDC 2013. Valve talks about making a game work in VR. They discuss 3D and rendering crosshairs and the likes. Might be of interest for some people on here. http://youtu.be/Gpr0FE2ATaY

I know it's probably just me, but I find the oculus games just like normal 2D games with head tracking tact on. Seated gaming with head tracking doesn't really translate as VR to me. Walking around a room with hand controllers is what VR is about IMO. I think the vive games are full games but because they are in one room everyone calls them tech demos. I think the lab will be a bigger deal than most think. They are underselling it so people don't go too nuts. It would be the sensible thing to do.

I'll just throw it up here too The EU preorder process is a joke. So I've placed the preorder on the first day it gone online. First thing that seemed odd was that I've chosen paypal as my payment method but I was never asked to login and confirm the payment, hence why I decided to contact the support and ask what's up with that. I clicked the link I've received in the order confirmation email and wrote about the issue... unfortunately it turned out that let me quote that email: You've contacted the customer service of eXpansys. Until recently we also handled HTC orders via the official website. Now we have completed our partnership and the mentioned order was not placed through our services. oh well seemed odd that they would not update their order confirmation email with proper email, but I found out that the orders are processed by Digital River Ireland Ltd. for the EU, so I wrote them an email instead pointing out that the links with the confirmation emails are wrong. I have received a reply relatively soon, let me quote that too. Thank you for contacting the online store. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Unfortunately, we do not handle the customer service for HTC EMEA. Please contact them directly with your request through one of the following methods: -bunch of EU countries Poland - Phone: 800 70 26 80 Hours: 9:00-21:00 (Mon-Fri), 9:00-13:00 (Sat) Email: shop.info-pl@htc.com -bunch of EU contries Ok, this starts to be annoying. In the meantime all of a sudden I have a €971 transaction popped out on my paypal. So I continue and copy/paste my initial email to shop.info-pl@htc.com to my surprise tho it gets redirected to first@expansys.com and I'm getting the same exact automatic response I've got the first time from expansys. The information on how the payment is going to be processed got resolved by itself but now I want to change the shipping address as im going to move out in a month or so but it seems that there is literally nobody I can contact to get any meaningful information back.

Hmm that sucks, yah Digital River just processes on-line order payments for companies. Nvidia uses them for transactions with their on-line store. Maybe you could try Twitter to reach someone at eXpansys for a change of address? GL

If a game is happening in one room, they may be full games (which I think they are not), but they look boring to me.
That is exactly the point. While non-seated VR may be more authentic I guarantee you that a device that is asking you to run around in a room all the time will never succeed. In the end people play videogames for relaxation and enjoyment which you won't get by running around in a room. Thinking of games like Skyrim, GTA, Witcher....can you really imagine someone running around non-stop in his "VR-corner" for 4-5 hours; I can't. But then it is really important that those new VR devices not only fulfill the desire for very specific "needs". Of course it is cool to have a VR device that tracks all your real movements but that will only be cool for so long. It would be cool if there are some titles that support this and maybe even are build on this premise entirely. But they should not make the mistake to go 100% for this "gaming only while standing and running around"-feature. There may be games that you will still prefer to play on your projector, monitor, Surround-Setup even after the VR devices have launched but it is absolutely crucial for the VR-success that VR gives you the same enjoyment and relaxation like todays gaming devices. VR may not drift into the "corner" of gimmick-games that are only nice to be played from time to time. To be succesful VR must come to mind first in the future when you are planning to "sit down" for a game-session. While I was very sceptical lately about this requirement when looking at the state of the VR devices today the hype is slowly coming back for me thanks to the Gear VR. Well that may sound ridiculous but honestly the only thing that was just not good enough for me with either the Rift's DK1 as well as the DK2 was the percepted resolution. It was just too low to really give me enjoyment and it still is even with the Gear VR but to a much lesser degree. With the Gear VR I saw some incredible 3D clips where you are not only totally immersed but also get at least acceptable resolution. Then I played some games and to my surprise those were games that weren't just tech-demos. The fact alone that a VR solution that is only powered by a small Smartphone while the VR device itself only has some magnifying lenses instead of actual screens is able to create total immersion just let's me get hyped for the "real deal" thast is about to come. I played a game named Herobound:Champion that is something like a Zelda clone and thus being a third person type of game definitely not the main genre for VR. But let me tell you this is a full-fledged game that is absolutely stunning in VR (because of the immersion factor). Another game called Hidden temple is just a little and short game were you try to get out of a mysterious temple. Definitely nothing special but even this barely 300MB-heavy adventure is absolutely stunning with the Gear VR. Now you have to keep in mind that I absolutely don't like Smartphone games. But being designed specifically for VR those games absolutely shine. And that's the point that is important here. The fact that it works. The fact that real games of different genres even genres that don't come to mind first when thinking of VR absolutely shine in VR if done right. Now with the upcoming Rift and the Vive we have 2 devices that are powered not by a small Smartphone but by your mighty PC. The games that will be released for those devices won't be just a mere 100MB big. Currently I am really looking forward to the Rift/Vive thinking of the pure fun that even the Gear VR with its little games (but already acceptable resolution that will definitely be even better with the Rift/Vive) was able to give me. And let's be honest the Gear VR is nothing than the small step-child of the things that are about to come. That being said the Gear VR's role as an ambassador for VR shouldn't be underestimated. Since you can take it with you literally everywhere I made good use of the portable capabilities of the device and showed it to countless people (which caused countless dropped jaws in the process). Here in Germany they even give away the Gear VR for free currently with every purchased Samsung Galaxy S7.
