Anyone know if the Rift can work like that Sony VR thing and can be used to play normal 3D Vision games (without head tracking obviously)?
Rift is actually fairly appealing if it were dual purpose like that, especially if it worked in 1080p like that. If it doesn't work, any owners think that would be better than a monitor or no?
Thanks.

Current dev kit is definitely not going to work well enough to pull this off. Resolution is too low and wicked screen door effect.
Consumer version might work, but because of the optics, you will still be using only about half of the available pixels, and thus will be lower resolution than any monitor.
Here are some links to pictures I made using a digital camera through the eye cups, and are pretty realistic in terms of what you actually see.

Looks pretty bad. Can you see this as a possibility with the 1080p version? Is having your entire vision in the game actually any better than just glasses and a monitor?

Its a bad monitor regardless.
Basically its whatever resolution the OR is divided by 1/3-1/4 [not quite sure]. 1080P OR is going to be less then 720P on normal display over a large FOV which will make it seem even worse.
As a 3d monitor for 3d vision. It depends but it definetly will take a lot of intervention. Opposite eye order + distortion + hsbs

The improved FOV is good, but is countered by lower resolution.
In my judgment, the only reason to use Rift is for the head-tracking. If you take that out of the equation, current 3D Vision equipment will give a better experience.

The consumer one will have twice the pixels if I'm any good at maths, I hope that does some good because it seems the primary complaint is the crappyness of the image. Just thought the lack of ghosting and being able to see nothing but the game would be worth something.
Thanks for the insight guys.

+1 but hey we can dream of a 4k OR, then the resolution would be really great I think and a must to be without pixelization crap so give me 4k please :)

I have been using the OR for a week or so and even though I'm amazed with it, the degree of immersion is so much better than anything else I've ever used including 3d vision, I don't see it as a substitute of a 3d vision monitor / projector anytime soon, basically since it doesn't work with 3d vision and nvidia has done nothing on this regard, and right now the resolution is atrocious. I don't think it will be able to compete on image quality with 3d vision monitor in at least two or three consumer OR generations.
Besides, the more you use OR, the more you notice that games should be designed for it to really work well. I've been playing Call of Cathulhu with Tridef on the OR an even though the immersion is incredible, it really doesn't work well, in game cinematics are terrible since your brain doesn't like stuff moving without your head doing the same. Mouse emulation is done really well, but still it's not like VR demos where it's perfect 1:1 movement, menus and inventory are impossible to use, and so on. Right now the only games I consider playable on OR are minecraft and quake, both look great on OR and their basic graphics make the incredibly low resolution of the OR to be not such a pain, and it's really cool to feel like you're inside those worlds even though they look like crap lol
My recommendation is to go for an HMZ-T2 instead, it has day one full 3d vision compatibility, together with great image quality and availability, maybe you can find it cheap on ebay if you're lucky. Let OR stay in the land of VR only for now.

Hey buddy,
Since you have both hmz-t2 and oculus, how does the rift's screen compare to sony. I know the fov is twice as big but does the image appear to be like 8-15 feet away like with sony? Eqzitara already said that he/she didnt notice screen door effect on sony, but it was prominent on oculus.

I have the hmz-t1 which is basically the same as t2 but heavier. OR FOV basically covers all your view, you can still see the borders of the screen but it makes a great job at filling your eyes with nothing but the screen. The HMZ looks like you're sitting in the middle of a cinema, like a floating screen surrounded by black borders. OR FOV is amazing and it's one of the things that makes it so immersive, and it's much better than the HMZ. However the HMZ image quality is a million times better than the OR with no screen door effect or blur, it's just a different league.

Yeah im happy with hmz-t1 image quality, i have one modded to ski goggles. Anyway, i was just wondering how the screen looks like. I like how sony did it, for me the screen appears to be about 15 feet away from me, so i can relax my eyes. In 3d usage its appears to be much closer :D stronger the 3d, closer the screen looks to be.
