I've asked this question of the forum users and by the replies I'm guessing something is wrong. At 1920x1080 at 24hz, I'm loosing about half the screen resolution. This happens both at the desktop as soon as I enable 3D and in the game itself.
Please understand I have a very good eye for resolution.
1. In windows, I can change the desktop to 1080p24 with no resolution loss. It looks perfect. The second I enable 3D in the Nvidia control panel, it becomes about half res. The text looks grainy and horrible.
2. The same thing happens in games. 1080p non 3D looks great (normal). Turning on 3D kills about half the resolution.
3. Crysis 2 uses side by side for 3D (native to Crysis, not Nvidia product). This results in half of the horizontal resolution. The Nvidia 3DTV play in 1080p 24 looks very similar to that. A bit beter, but NOT FULL RES 1080.
4. 720P with 3DTV Play looks worse than 1080p24, but not much, and definitely worse than 720p non 3D.
5. My TV is a Samsung UN40D6420, recently added to your support list. I've downloaded the update and 3DTV Play now installs and runs perfectly...except for this resolution issue. I am running 266.66 drivers because the 270 drivers give me BSOD (memory management), however, the resolution issue was the same with the 270 drivers, so that has nothing to do with it.

Hey thanks! Turns out there was. I can't believe I missed it. It wasn't the problem, unfortunately, but at least it looks better now with the sharpness turned down.
However, I'm still at square 1. It definitely is not 1920x1080.

You can't game in 1080P on an HDTV. Its limited to 720P due to the HDMI chipset. This has been discussed in multiple threads. Please take a look at the forum.

Yes you can. 1080p at 24hz. It's still 1920x1080.
And 1280x720 has resolution loss also, so it's a moot point.

Mike,
Are you connected to HDMI1 input on your back panel? This is the first thing you must do, and you must label this input "DVI PC" under "input' using the Samsung menu.

Yes, I'm connected to HDMI1, which is labeled HDMI1/DVI when I access the menu, but there is no input setting in the menu. I know what you mean, though, my LG had such a setting. This Samsung does not seem to need it.

Can you take a picture through one lens in 3d and 2d mode so we can see it ourselves?
I think i might know what you mean, but im not sure, if I do, its just the effect of 3D, but again, im not sure, perhaps your display is lowering it in some sort of performance mode...I hope not. I would try turning AA on very high and switching back and worth from 3D and see if that made it look more similar.
Btw, i also noticed the 1080p to 720p didn't make a huge difference in Halflife 2, although i have AA very high when using 720p.

I tried taking photos, but it's actually very hard to see the difference that way. You can get a very good idea if you just run a game without 3D and cut the resolution down, like go from 1920x1080 to 1024x576 or something along those lines. You'll see that things get chunkier, particularly the leaves of trees and other fine details. That's exactly what I'm experiencing, except in 3D.

Hmm...this is disturbing. On my 2010 sammy, before labeling, no 1 to 1 pixel mapping, looked bad. After labeling, text/graphics was just as good as a computer monitor, 1 to 1 pixel mapping. So is the 2011 Sammy HDMI1 "stuck" in non 1 to 1, or is it stuck in 1 to 1? This question must be answered before I even consider ditching my 2010 for a 2011.
When you go to "input" setting off the main menu, do you see "edit name" then right arrow to a list of all your inputs? On my 2010, all these inputs are are default unlabeled, then I can right arrow to a sub list of possible preset labels. If I choose either 'PC' or "DVI PC' I get the good desktop 1 to 1 mapping. All other labels result in ugly desktop.
Do you not get this list of pre defined labels?

In this TV the scan options are seperate from input settings. The "Just Scan" option gives you 1 to 1 mapping in any mode. That was the first thing I checked once I realized turning on 3D loads preset settings, but it was still set to "Just Scan."

Mike,
I think I finally understand your post. Previously, I could see no difference in image quality between 2D and 3D in games, 3D was just an extra dimension. Now I believe it depends on the game. I had been using my current game BulletStorm to compare, but I was comparing BS 2D to BS in 3D checkerboard, no difference in image quality. But I swapped 3D Vision for 3DTV Play so that I could observe BS in 1080P framepack and I totally see what you mean, FP looks very bad vs checkerboard and 2D. Other games look the same and don't display this problem, what ever this problem is. For example, Modern Warfare 2 3D CB looks same in 2D vs 3D framepack (both at 1920x1080 of course). Bioshock and Bioshock2: framepack looks ever so slightly better in framepack vs CB. Only difference is the colors are a tiny bit stronger, more vivid in FP mode. Difference is so slight, it took 10 minutes of back and forth to convince myself that there is any difference at all.
Could you tell me what games you believe 2D looks much better than 3D Framepack both at 1920x1080? I see this on only two games, bulletstorm and CoD Black Ops.

Should Bioshock look the same in 3D as it does in 2D, except for added dimmension?
[/quote]
Thinking about it, I probably compared 2D to 3D page flipping (instead of framepacking) since I don't normally have 3DTV Play installed. PF should look just like framepack because they're both 1920x1080 per eye. However, now I'm thinking there's something about framepack that is 'off'. Can you compare 1080P framepack to 1080P pageflip in Bioshock, or any other game? I think you're on to something, I would like to figure this out. Let me know if there's a specific game you want me to test. Meanwhile, there's a very big difference between Bulletstorm 1080P FP vs Bulletstorm 1080P PF.

Are you connected to HDMI1 input on your back panel? This is the first thing you must do, and you must label this input "DVI PC" under "input' using the Samsung menu.

Yes, I'm connected to HDMI1, which is labeled HDMI1/DVI when I access the menu, but there is no input setting in the menu. I know what you mean, though, my LG had such a setting. This Samsung does not seem to need it.
Maye I should try a different input?
Hmm...this is disturbing. On my 2010 sammy, before labeling, no 1 to 1 pixel mapping, looked bad. After labeling, text/graphics was just as good as a computer monitor, 1 to 1 pixel mapping. In this TV the scan options are seperate from input settings. The "Just Scan" option gives you 1 to 1 mapping in any mode. That was the first thing I checked once I realized turning on 3D loads preset settings, but it was still set to "Just Scan."

Dragon Age 2 loses resolution.
Witcher loses resolution
Mass Effect 2 loses resolution.
Crysis 2 loses resolution.
With the new drivers and my tv on the supported list, the only game I've tried is Crysis 2, no change.
Should Bioshock look the same in 3D as it does in 2D, except for added dimmension?
