I mean that I would not discourage the noob from considering even the beautiful experience that happens in 3DV - in my opinion - even with i.e. Thief 1997, although there is no match with latest games: as the "experience" could also be in the eye of the beholder, it may be good also without powerful rigs and the utmost effects
Both are good, thanks for all the good ideas.
I think having it be a noob list is extremely helpful, but also for me there are a bunch I've missed over the years. I have limited play time, so when I do play I'd like to maximize the experience, pretty much like a noob. So I think it works for both.
If you think it would be helpful to have a specific noob list, I can make alternate lists on different pages without any trouble.
Nah. It works for both. I just meant I was trying to pick best of the best for certain genres. So if you were trying to sell somebody on the merits of 3D, that's where you'd begin. Obviously that's applicable to everyone though. You don't have to be a noob to have missed something worth playing.
EDIT: UH OH. How did everyone forget about JUST CAUSE 2? Major oversight. Had to go and rearrange some points to get it some votes.

Lol, not sure if someone is messing around after talk of Witcher or remembering incorrectly but Witcher 1 has a 2D mouse/hud [also some water issues, swamp area but thats not huge].

Holy crap man, PLEASE don't play ME3 before ME1 or ME2. The ME1 part of the story is amazing and so so well told. The graphics are scenery are great in ME1 even though its older. [s]Just check out my ME1 video to see for yourself[/s].... Wait a minute, don't, its completely full of spoilers.

Yeah, the list can be funny. It's all new and we are still experimenting. Skyrim and Just Cause 2 were missing for awhile, and once remembered took a giant leap up.
That's also why I was asking before about different play orders. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll plan to play Witcher 1 before 2, even though it's not quite as good in 3D. And I'll skip to Rayman Legends. Seems pretty clear that Mass Effect series in sequence is clearly better. And Arkham Asylum slightly makes more sense before City.
I just voted myself, and it's an interesting question as to the difference between what I'd recommend to a noob as great stuff to play, and the games that I personally found the most fun. Ranking them is interesting and not as easy as I'd expect.
Pretty much had to go with Just Cause 2 as my most recommended, that game is epic in 3D. Beautiful.

Related question: Do you feel that Trine 2 is dramatically better than Trine 1?
I see that Trine 2 is rating as second on the list. I've only played Trine 1 so far, and it was spectacular in 3D. Is Trine 2 better, more of the same, or just the most recent incarnation?
A related question for new buyers would be whether you should play Trine 1 before Trine 2 for story or other background.

It's worth playing Trine 1 first for the story, and the gameplay is kinda fun once you get the hang of it.
Trine 2 is a visual masterpiece in 3d. Probably the best visually designed for 3d I've ever seen. It's a dramatic improvement over an already pretty game. Gameplay is improved too, though still somewhat more of the same.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll put Trine 2 on the short list. Has anyone played it in co-op? I was waiting to play it when my buddy would have a chance.
Sort of related question: what about Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion? I see it for $5 now on Steam sale. It made that previous best of 3D list, but is unrepresented here. 94 metacritic. Too old?

Oblivion was great, but Skyrim is better than Oblivion in almost every way. Oblivion is more generic, repetetive, combat isn't as good, world isn't as pretty. Not worth it at this point, imo.
I've played a couple of hours of Trine 2 in co-op. It's probably the most interesting way to play it. Though that's not saying much, as the Trine games are actually quite boring once you get past the graphics, in my opinion. The puzzles are super easy, and the combat is a tedious nuisance. You end up doing the same things over and over throughout the game. At least with friends it breaks it up a bit.
Witcher 2 is on sale now. For anyone who hasn't played it, make sure you also download the free semi-official combat mod for Witcher 2. It's a huge overhaul made by CDP staff in their free time. It rebalances everything, adds animations, changes existing animations, makes every snappier. You can also download the Polish language pack. Some English speakers prefer to play it in Polish with subtitles. From what I've heard of the English, the voice actor casting is better in the Polish version.

Oblivion is really good in 3D when used with the texture mods (Search for Qarl's Texture mod for Oblivion) and I particularily liked the Shivering Isle expansion due to some of the wackiness. There is one set of missions (I won't spoil) that still hold for me as probably the best and creative mission design. Oblivion with the expansion and of course the countless mods make it an epic package. I have sunk hours and hours. For 3D and if RPG's are your thing, I say get for sure. Especially at 5 bucks. There is a free downloadable expansion mod by a German group. The expansion is called Nehrim and this is a complete game in itself. Another hundreds of hours. It has German voice acting along with English subtitles. In many ways, Nehrim is better than Oblivion and it also has it's own world.

To sum it up, it plays very well in 3D. Just be prepared to spend hours and hours...

It really depends on what genre one prefers. Since I have a slow internet connection online multiplayer games don't work for me. Additionally, Some enjoy sims, others rpg and others still fps. Given enough time you get a mix of votes for titles across that cover every variation.
If you enjoy Fps and Race type games, you need to ask for votes for those categories.

I saw Trine 2 doing well in the voting. I just picked it up on steam for $1.99 (christmas day). Looks superb in 3D and what a great game. Reminds me of the lost Vikings on the Amiga in concept. Loving it so far. Absolutely beautiful to look at.

That was an interesting experiment. I am not sure how I feel about the results tbh. My gut kinda wanted Skyrim to win (though I don't think this was reflected in my voting choices)...
But hey! Not going to argue with the good punters here. :)
Here's to hoping you will open up another survey next year!
