I certainly don't want to say something like "3d is dead already" considering the news recently about 3d BD specs... but It's almost seeming that way to me right now. I know this forum may not be the best place to bring up a couple points, but as it really does seem like there are a lot of knowledgeable people and nVidia seems to be up there on the whole 3d thing... so why not post here.
Awhile back I thought about seeing if I could get 3d gaming, close to when it was actually released, but decided against it. Read some things that didn't make me too happy about somethings, like the Samsung monitor being locked into settings in 3d mode, people getting sick wearing the shutter glasses, the shutter glass system itself rather than a polarized one... and of course the cost (due partially/mostly due to the shutter glasses it seemed). Well, long story short, things have changed a bit now and I'm once again considering going the 3d route... and where before there seemed to options out the wazoo, now I can't seem to find any. On newegg I can find a whooping 1 120hz monitor PERIOD (out of stock) and some like idzeon monitor which uses 2 DVI and software to create a 3d with polarized glasses. Plus, I can't even seem to find the kit that includes the monitor anymore, even with some of the things said about it. Can you say wow? Plus now I'm hearing even more bad things about a (I guess) newer version of that samsung monitor, and someone saying someone from nvidia said to not get it? 0.o;?
So I mean, whats going on here? Is newegg just not a good place anymore? Is the samsung (normally a good company) really that bad? Did 120hz monitors die out that quickly? Or is all of this just my timing with it being so close to the holidays? Like I said above, I don't want to say something like "3d is dead" but man, trying to look up things to get an idea on whats good and would work really seems to make me think it. It's really disheartening actually, especially with how much hype 3d is getting in general now. I mean that 3d BD spec thing alone is going to cause a lot of stir and interest in 3d stuff. Not to mention it'd kind of a pain (for me personally) to be hearing so many bad things about the samsung monitor, as the last time I shopped for a monitor a samsung was the only one that turned out decent from 2 or 3 brands. All the others (I sadly can't remember a brand, but one may have been viewsonic since I had one of them before) had terrible backlight bleed through on the sides. I mean to the point of basically a pure white band a few pixels wide. Granted my current samsung has a little bit of it too, but it's a small little gray band fading quickly into the deep black. Not a bright white band.
Can anyone recommend a good 22" (largest I can fit in my current setup sadly... Well, MAYBE a 24 actually) monitor, keeping in mind what I said about about backlight bleedthrough, that is 120hz and will work with the 3d gaming kit thing? Also, the shutter glasses really aren't as bad as people made them out to be are they? Like they don't cause any more "sickness" then polarized? (some people were saying that they didn't feel queasy or anything with polarized but did with the 3d vision shutter glasses)

I'm in the US so if they'd even ship here it'd probably cost a lot...
On a related note... When reading some other threads and looking i guess there is high hopes for an acer monitor coming out soon... One of the things mentioned about how "bad" the Samsung is is there is (supposedly) a lot of ghosting on the top of the screen. With some people saying that it's due to the nature of shutter glasses. Thats kind of sad if true, as one would hope that a company wouldn't release something with such a flaw. Why not just go polarized (is that even possible on LCD actually?) then?

retailers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_etailers.html
kit from nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_GeFor...nBundle_us.html
Some people are sensitive to 120Hz and bothered, but I think most people can't see any flicker and wear them for hours and hours.
Apparently the 3D in games from Nvidia's 3D vision kit is bettar then Avatar's 3D in cinemas so if You see that movie You can get an idea.
There do seems to be a lot of complaint's about ghosting on the top etc. which is confusing when buying stuff. The samsung is/was one of the best 2D game monitors though.
I suspect it is like going to Creative's or Samsung's forums and You will find load of people complaining. Even though 95% of the customers are satisfied. There really should be a "positive only" forum to counteract. It is confusing to me also - like WTF!

I remember awhile back one of my local BM stores had a 3d vision display setup... I put on the glasses, and while I don't think I saw flicker on the video demo thing, I do remember feeling a little queasy.. However, at the time I didn't know a lot about the system, and so now I'm wondering if someone maybe tweaked the settings to max (or the store did, can't remember if the IR transmitter was in the open or behind glass) which may have caused that. I can't imagine someone can take max settings right off the bat w/o some ill-effect.

I actually DID go see Avatar, and that's actually partially what re-struck the spark for getting 3d gaming lol. That was pretty good, so to think that it can maybe be better... Makes me wonder if what I said above isn't more true then I think atm as that didn't bother me in the slightest. May need to head back and check again.

Ya, I have a samsung monitor right now (60hz obviously) and I really enjoy it and like it. One of the reasons why when I heard that I was like "really?" I'm doing more research on other things too, and it's not making matters any better lol. I obviously don't have one so I can't really comment on the ghosting, but from what I've read and seen in some research I've been doing, it sounds like it has a very legit reason for happening. Even if it's not happening to everyone for some reason, like slightly different manufacturing tolerances or people's eyesight.

Ya, most things on the net need to be taken with a grain of salt. You don't see many people posting saying that everything is fine, it's a great thing, etc. I guess i'ts just human nature. Still, if that 5% is from a large customer base then you should probably take that into consideration... Maybe I'd get lucky and not notice anything, maybe I'd notice it. But when a customer support rep for a company admits it's a problem... That acer seems promising, but it's too soon to tell of course and could just PR hype.
Also, even though I edited it out, thanks for the link to retailers. For big purchases like this I tend to prefer BM stores, or newegg, since I know I'll get fast CS (I live a few hours from a newegg shipping center) and if something goes wrong will get it fixed asap w/o having to shell for a ton more shipping.
Get a Zalman Trimon. It is a polarized 22" monitor that sells for half of cost of the Samsung kit. I have one and its really good.
I don't know, i've read some bad things about those (well ok, just about every 3d monitor actually) but supposedly there are a few faults in that like having to run at native res for 3d games. Not that that is really a big deal right now, but since 3d does give a performance hit could be.

(some people were saying that they didn't feel queasy or anything with polarized but did with the 3d vision shutter glasses)
duno if this helps but this is the store i shop at from new zealand so duno if you want to get it shiped where ever you are. Why not just go polarized (is that even possible on LCD actually?) then?

kit from nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_GeFor...nBundle_us.html
Getting 3D is totally worth it though.
