Major mitsubishi overscan and flickering new 3dvision owner with major issues!
  1 / 2
I just got a 60" mitsubishi DLP and hooked my PC up to it via the 3dvision dvi-hdmi cable. Immediately i noted that the left most column of my desktop icons, my taskbar, half of my sidebar, and an equal amount of the top of the picture are cut off. Also, the picture looks blurry, especially text. I've been googling around for the past 2 days and have found and tried a few "solutions" and haven't found anything that works.

I first tried going into the TVs menu and tried to find anything that would help, some sort of calibration or resizing options, but i found none. I found a setting called "vertical postion" and "horizontal position" but adjusting those two does absolutely nothing.

I was told that these TVs will overscan a 1080p signal unless you name the input "PC", but I had already labeled it as such, so no go there.

What i finally ended up doing was going into the nvidia control panel and resizing the desktop using the sliders, and while that got my desktop to fit on the screen, it reduces the resolution. Moreover, when I launch a game, it changes resolution back to 1080p and back to overscanned. I dont really see any games with a resolution options of 1808x1001 or whatever odd resolution i had to set my desktop to in order to compensate for teh overscan.

So i played L4D2 in 3d for a while (and it did look nice in-game, and 300 and other 1080p files i played looked pretty nice too cause i couldnt tell it was overscanned). My hud was over course off the screen so i could really see my health or ammo or any of that important information, but it was still playable. But for the money i spent, i expected to be able to see the whole picture!

next i loaded up GTA4. I had played the game in 3DVision Discover and it was awesome and worked perfectly (once I got a little mod that removed the 2d crosshairs). But when I started it up with the real 3dvision on, even in the opening/menu/loading screens, my right lens would flicker about 5 times and pause and keep doing that. When i got in game I could see that the 3d effect was on cause everything was blurry like usual without the glasses, but when i put the glasses back on the right lens was still flickering and I couldnt see any 3d effect.

If anyone can help me with either of these problems I'd really appreciate it. As it is now I'm really thinking about sending everything back and spending my $1500 on something that I dont have to fight with and only partially enjoy. Thanks.

You need to access the service menu.
Q9: How do you get into the service menu on these models?

A9: Menu 2 4 5 7 on the remote. From there, 0 will get you to the geometry menu (sometimes known as "keystone correction" to earlier generations of Mits DLP owners), which is the most common request to be in the service menu.

In there you need to access manual geometry or something like that and press 1 IIRC to disable the stupid geometry correction that makes everything ultra blurry for PC use.
I am not on my tv now but if you don't figure it out I will post better instructions later.

As for overscan you the resolution just below the highest option you have or use the Desktop Resize ( that is the name in the Nvidia control Panel) to maximize your screen area without going into Overscan.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check out that menu on the TV and see if that helps. I'm really not going to be satisfied with not being able to use full HD and be able to see it all on the screen though. This is just horrible design. Don't they test these things?

I was on Mitsubishi's site just now and decided to check out how much replacement lamps are out of curiosity. So i searched by model number which is "WD-60737" for the 60". On the results page, i didn't find any lamps, except this:

"WD-60737 65" 1080p DLP HDTV 915B403001 LAMP (180W) (V39/V39+/++/V41/41C/+) 'G' $99.00 YES"

The first column was for model number, the second is for model description. As you can see, it says 65" for the description. I'm not sure if the lamp is just a bulb or if it contains the mirros that the light reflects off of as well. If it does contain it all, then this is kinda re-confirming my speculation that the overscan is because they use the same projector/mirrors in the TVs of different size. When i was describing the problem i'm having to a friend yesterday i told him "The pictures off the edges on all 4 sides by a few inches, if the screen was a 65" or maybe a 70" the image would probably fit perfectly."

Overscan is the crappy thing we get but its not really their fault...its part of the NTSC if recall that right.
It would be logical though to have an option for zero overscan when using as monitor but yeah...that would be the day.

Hi All

We have a separate patch for fixing Overscan on DLP HDTVs.

Here is the Knowledge Base article on it. I recommend first downloading the utility at the bottom of this article, and then trying to steps mentioned in it.

TBH I'm not sure what this is supposed to do. I have win7 x64 and since the link only contained the vista versions i assumed they were compatible. Installed the exe and restarted and I haven't seen any difference in my overscan issues. Running 1080p still has my taskbar and everything off the screen, i can shrink the resolution down with desktop resizing in nvidia CP like i could before, but i can't use any resolution lower than 1080p in games without getting checker boarded graphics when i enable 3dvision, so my options are still.

Also, shaioin, since you seem to have the same/similar model tv, have you found any video setting for it that help maybe darken the blacks a bit more and make them not so blue? I set mine to natural color mode and lowered the brightness a notch but i pretty much left everything else on defaults. I think the picture looks great w/ the 3d glasses on though, they help make the blacks darker/blacker.... so maybe i shouldnt change it since it already looks perfect in 3d lol.

I think the picture looks great w/ the 3d glasses on though, they help make the blacks darker/blacker.... so maybe i shouldnt change it since it already looks perfect in 3d lol.

did you ever get this fixed? i have the 65 inch tv. i just manually adjusted the sliders to fit the screen in control panel. all the games i play have the option to select the native resolution (spore, batman, crysis, mass effect) any that dont- like crysis- you just have to search on the net for a way to run custom resolutions. i am surprised you dont like your tv- mine has been great! no issues other than initial set up. the slider screen on my computer is over sized and you cannot see the button that selects the resolution. make the text bigger on your computer to fix the blurry text.

Thanks.
I like the TV, it's great being able to watch/play stuff from anywhere in the room. it's been awesome for parties already (some mario kart, smash bros and such in 1080p goodness on dolphin emulator :) and movies look great on it (a bit too bright/blue in darker movies tho, and I do notice the rainbowing effect sometimes if i glance around the screen too much, which is something you do a lot on a screen this huge). 3D games look great on it tho. The effect sorta creates more jaggies in the graphics, but it's much better than the ghosting of the LCDs. The main complaints i have about the TV are in regards to it's use as a monitor (which i had my doubts on b4 i even ordered it because of the nature of projection technology i've seen in the past, so i've kept my 24" LCD hooked up and am in the process of finding a comfortable arrangement for dual display setup). In addition to the overscan, the top left corner of the picture bends upwards and is a bit blurry because of it. If I grab the top left corner of the frame and pull it towards me a bit it straightens out almost completely. It's not so noticeable in most movies/games, but in firefox and such, its pretty noticeable having the toolbars and such sloping up off the screen a bit.

Even so, after a weekend full of ME2 in 3D as well as replaying some other games, I'm happy with my purchase. Besides, I couldnt return it now even if i wanted, my cat's made a fortress of the box already.

Overscan, geometry issues, bulb replacement, all disadvantages of RP DLP tech. At least with my Sammy LED DLP I don't have to worry about bulbs. Only option now to skip bulbs is LaserVue through Mits.

When you resize the desktop with the Nvidia sliders it ADDS a custom resolution to your list, then Nvidia control panel adjust set you desktop top this resolution.

When you play the game you not supposed to play at 1080p but your supposed to select the NEW custom resolution that nvidia added, this is now a permanent resolution

This does reduce the resolution but not by much but you right it is slightly less but from now one use that custom resolution for anything related to stereo

Glad you are happier!! like one of the other posters said- you can fix the over scan issue by creating a custom resolution. i personally can not see a difference running a bit lower than 1080p. i wish NVIDIA would fix this so we could see the full 1080 goodness- that hotfix Andrew posted did nothing for my computer- i still had to manually adjust the resolution. as for the blurring try the geometry correction. i had the same issue and now have absolutely no blurring!! i use my tv as my primary monitor with great results and no complaints. Here is some links for information. you will have to play with it for a bit to figure it out- but its well worth the time spent.

the reason the picture is blurry is becuase there is allot of variation in the manufacturing process- the geometry correction should straighten it out- if your set is beyond the correction ability send it back- there are a few out there that cannot be fixed. you can also adjust the color effects by playing with the settings under Menu_picture on the tv- get it looking perfect! hope this helps you.

you are right about the dlp issues- but the newer tv are much improved. bulbs are only 99$ direct from mit. and they last 6000 hours. all my other hd tv's overscaned also- maybe im just unlucky! Does your Sam dlp overscan stock? geometry issues are easy to fix with the latest generation dlp- the olders ones- now thats a different story.... just curious, what happens when the LED dlp dies? how do you fix it? they both seem like nice tvs to me.
