Assassin's Creed (1, 2, Brotherhood): Workaround for skybox problem
1 / 4
As the Assassin's Creed games are one of my favorite games I am quite happy that there are only a few problems with S3D. On the other hand it's a shame that these games do not support 3D vision as these kind of platformer games are predestinated to be played in S3D.
The most annoying problem to me is the fact that the sky is at a wrong depth and also causes a lot of ghosting. As You spend most of the time uppon the rooftops You are quite often confronted with this problem. You could reduce depth and play around with the convergence settigs but personally I prefer 100% depth.
The best solution would be to place the sky at the correct depth (as a mod for TES Oblivion does). Unfortunately I don't know how to do this with Assassin's Creed /sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
On the other hand there isn't a great variety of cloud/weather situations in these games and the sky is quite unrealistic as the cities seem to be positioned in the eye of a storm: the clouds circle with high speed around the cities /wacko.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
So I decided to remove completely the strange and wrong placed clouds by replacing the textures for the clouded sky with a texture for a cloudless sky. I also removed the wrong placed sun/moon/stars and their halo. As a result I got a clear sky that still is at wrong depth but You can barely notice that. There are haze effects so it still looks quite realistic and You can observe afterglow or dawn. Besides from that AC takes place in regions where a cloudless sky isn't a curiosty /cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I also got rid of ghosting caused by the clouds and some disturbing dazzling effects especially in AC 1.
Compare the pictures for AC1, AC2, ACB.

To replace the pictures You will need TexMod (a common program for texture mods). There are many download and tutorial sites for TexMod.
This also means You will have to play the DirectX 9 version of AC1 (\Program Files\Ubisoft\Assassin's Creed\AssassinsCreed_Dx9.exe).
Using TexMod with AC2 und ACB causes problems as the Ubisoft Game Launcher prevents TexMod to work /argh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':argh:' /> So You have to use "special versions" /rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> for these games that circumvent the launcher (this fact should not prevent You from buying the games!!!).
I also used a color correction mod for AC1 that improves the S3D perception by making the picture clearer (see).
Here are my tpf-files for AC1, AC2 and ACB. I'm not sure if I have found every weather, daytime and level situation so it might still be "work in progress".

I discovered uMod:

In contrary to TexMod this software also works with games You have to start using a game launcher. So You don't need to use the "special versions" of AC to be able replace the sky textures. You can use uMod with global hook instead. My tdf files for TexMod will also work with uMod. I even was able to remove also the irritating dark spots on the ground that likely represent ambiant occlusion shadows of the characters in AC2 and ACB. Load with uMod the tdf file for the game and additionally the shadow_fix.zip.

Unfortunately at the moment I don't have STALKER or Gothic 3 installed on my PC. I could find a notice about a nudepatch for Gothic 3 using TexMod. So in theory it should be possible to change the sky textures in Gothic 3 too. There was no connection between STALKER and TexMod. But I remember that STALKER can be modded quite easy compared to AC as it's files are more accessable. Perhaps in this case the sky textures could be replaced directly...

well if you want to give it a try, Gothic 3 is on sale at Steam for 3.75 euro, and really the only problem in 3d is the sky's wrong depth, if you want to check it out lots of us will surely be grateful /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It is not a matter of getting the game (allready bought it but didn't install and play it) - but a matter of time /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
To identify the sky textures You have to find all of the different weather situations and scroll through hundreds of textures that are loaded at that moment /ermm.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ermm:' />

Thank You for Your feedback!
Please report if You discover a sky texture in Assassins Creed that has not been replaced by my tdf-files.
Just fixed another game with the skybox problem:
PURE

Was quite easy as there only a few sky textures. Now PURE can be played with 100% depth using the attached tdf-file.
As You can see on the pictures the workaround also removes some mountains in the very far distance. But You will hardly have noticed them during the races...
Update:
There is now a fix using Helixmod that places the sky at the right depth. I would recommend to use this new fix instead of my texmod workaround. Attachment and images removed.

Yeah it is a shame, i just recentley played acb and gta4, they can look great and messed up at the same time. 2D looks the best but then you lose the perceptual depth, games that are not 3D supported look horrendous at times.

also suffers from the skybox problem. As it is more modding friendly I didn't have to use texmod but make a modding file. Simply extract the attached erf-File into the folder ...\Users\...\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age 2\packages\core\override. Unfortunately I couldn't find the texture file for the sun or moon (if there any...). So You can still observe a doubled sun or moon. There also seem to be special textures for the first level. But within Kirkwall the clouds now are removed. In many situations this helps to get a less irritating picture:
