Now I see that AMD has come up with their own VR solution. So we have what now, at least a 1/2 dozen different VR systems in the works? To me, that's not a good thing...

TBH, I don't think that all these VR devices are actually going to see light of day outside the big three.
I think its mostly like trying to get an investor/patents/etc.
--------------
I don't think AMD actually has anything to do with it. I think they are powering the processor thats on the back of the head. Like in ways of PS4/XBONE is powered by AMD.

Yey! I liked it better in the "good old days" when Nvidia introduced 3D Vision and AMD came with their 3DHD (or what is called) only to later "move" it to Tridef (and TRIDEF SUX no matter what anyone says...compared to WHAT 3D Vision can achieve... TRIDEF "XUS")...
So...there were 2 (TWO) major players...Now, with VR it looks like the "Average Joe" will come tomorrow with "his VR" solution...
Personally, I don't care AS LONG AS ALL DEVICES ARE COMPATIBLE (like monitors)...but is when THEY AREN'T COMPATIBLE...that's when "shiet hits the fan".... (sorry for the rude words, but is exactly how I thought it;) )
Everyone coming to the party is not a bad thing IF everyone agrees to play in the same court;) (but most of the times this isn't the case... I hope Sony doesn't pull a "3D" like they did on the PS3....with how many games in 3D... 5 or something?? )
(If anyone is interested... and probably most aren't... I think I will "skip" VR for a year and see what actually COMES OUT of this "VR marathon" that we are forced to witness lately... Oh, and BTW! 3D Vision Surround IS STILL THE BEST FREAKING THING YOU CAN GET IN STEREOSCOPIC 3D ^_^. Not saying that I have 3 3D Vision Monitors (which basically forces me to ALWAYS have top of the line cards and invest a lot of $$$) but because is the TRUTH. Anyone who saw it and using it can't argue with the result it "show on screen"! (performance is a different topic here and is "subject to change" ^_^) ).
Since everyone likes to "lobby for their favorite", I also want to lobby for 3D Vision and 3D Vision Surround ^_^. (It amazes me...how people who previously complained about WEARING GLASSES are not OK with wearing a 2 pound HELMET ( speaking in general and not the people here)... I think VR is the new "iphone"... Speaking of which.. "IPHONE XUS"... Just look and understand Android ^_^ )
Anywho, I rambled enough lol:))
EDIT:
Sorry if I moved the topic a bit "off-topic" ^_^, but it seems that everyone talks about VR lately...soo.....

I am in the same boat even though I could order one now. My instincts are telling me to hold off until the dust settles. The content is going to drive my decision on which one to buy. I agree with Helifax that it be better if all manufacturers would play in the same court as far as content goes. Competition on the other hand for hardware is actually a good thing since this drives innovation and benefits to the consumer. All this exclusive shit for games drives me nuts though.
I am quite happy with my 3D setup on my BenQ W1070 on 120 Inch screen. I am well on my way to finishing Alien Isolation and with the lights out and hi fidelity headphones, all I can say is holy shit...why am I so tense....lol
Thanks again too all the fixers for making this happen!
This thread is good to see what kind of tools are given to game developers and what direction the industry will go. Time will tell I suppose.

Definitely waiting for the dust to settle. I am perfectly happy with what I can achieve with 3d vision surround at this point, and I'm mortally afraid of the VR sickness.
Until I started playing 3dvision I would suffer this in alot of engines. Some reason 3dvision stops it, but I hear VR is 100x worse.
I cannot even play Half life 2 in 2d without needing to hurl after about 15 minutes

The Game Developers Conference is here. It’s a time to catch up with friends, share our work and celebrate our passion for gaming at this week’s gathering in San Francisco.
GDC is especially interesting this year. Innovation, invention and transformation are everywhere. There’s so much potential. So much new opportunity.
In particular, virtual reality and the cloud represent fundamental change and opportunity on all levels of technology for business and customers.
And the PC platform, our home base, keeps getting better, delivering more choice, scalability and performance than before; and importantly, with ever increasing simplicity.
At GDC, we’ll focus on three things.
First, NVIDIA Launches GameWorks 3.1 software development kit. One of our most important goals is to create new technologies that help game developers make great games, faster, more efficiently and with amazing visuals.
GameWorks 3.1 includes three groundbreaking graphics techniques for shadows and lighting. NVIDIA Volumetric Lighting as seen in Fallout 4, NVIDIA HFTS as seen in Tom Clancy’s The Division and NVIDIA VXAO as seen in Rise of the Tomb Raider have been released to developers. And we’ve also released beta versions of NVIDIA Flow and NVIDIA Rigid Body Physics.
Second, we’ll show the results of our work in VR throughout the week. It’s clear that VR is an incredible medium, capable of a level of immersion that we’ve all dreamed of. But at the same time, it’s new, complicated and demanding. We’ve been hard at work with key partners in the VR ecosystem to build the gold standard platform for VR development.
From game engines to head-mounted displays and SDKs, our NVIDIA VRWorks SDK represents the most comprehensive and high-performance platform for VR development. With multi-res shading, VRWorks is capable of up to 50% gains in performance, which translates into higher quality, higher fidelity and, ultimately, more believable and immersive experiences.
We’re excited to share some incredible experiences that our partners have created in our booth and discuss during the sessions.
Last, we’ll be making exciting announcements for NVIDIA SHIELD – our family of high-performance devices that deliver both great entertainment and serious gaming. NVIDIA is pioneering streaming games from the cloud with our GeForce NOW service and GDC will bring some great new titles. Over the last year, we’ve seen SHIELD go from ambitious vision to product reality, and now we’re poised for a great future.
See you at GDC.

Looks like GTC will be more focused on VR.

If you want to see how virtual reality is about to upend not just gaming and entertainment but manufacturing, construction, medicine and more, then you need to be at next month’s GPU Technology Conference.
VR — which couples a new generation of thin, light, high-definition headsets with new kinds of content — is unleashing new kinds of immersive experiences. And it will be one of the main themes of GTC, set for April 4-7, in Silicon Valley.

Only one and half hours left until the oculus rift embargo lifts!
Hopefully we'll see something that'll make me want to keep the rift, otherwise it's going on eBay!
Exciting times.
That new starters VR experience looks impressive. Fricking lightsabers! :D

Everyone coming to the party is not a bad thing IF everyone agrees to play in the same court;) (but most of the times this isn't the case... I hope Sony doesn't pull a "3D" like they did on the PS3....with how many games in 3D... 5 or something?? )
[/quote]
Currently there are 50+ announced PSVR games in development, but since No Man's Sky isn't one of them I can't see why anyone would give a crap about sony's version.

Glad to see they keep crowing about the engines supporting multi-res shading. It really is an awesome stop gap until gen 2 and foveated rendering becomes available. It's basically just a very dumb version of it (that obviously doesn't track the eye).
I would be positively stunned if Sony isn't doing the same thing with their Sony VR SDK. 50 percent performance increase for something that's imperceptible is just too much to leave on the table.

I was hoping for some solid Pascal news. Looks like the cards aren't as far along as we all hoped. Probably due for release of middle-high end in 6 months, and then a Ti/Titan next year.
That means a long wait for good performance on both Rift and Vive :(

TBH, news doesnt really matter. As soon as they reveal a cards they release in store like 2 weeks later.
I don't think you have to worry about performance too much for a while. Custom resolutions are probably going to be inadvisable and are way too huge of a leap while maintaining that FPS. Maybe even more then card upgrade.
By the time you will be bother by your cards [even non-sli] they will be out imo. Unless renderer support gets crazy good crazy fast I guess.
Only graphical games I've seen that are near release that might push past a 970 [non-sli] is Alien Isolation[not sure if its happening], ethan carter, Project Cars. Pretty much games that were developed without VR in mind.
-------------
Wouldn't surprise me if release is held back cause they want people to double dip.
