Grainy Texture (Horizontal Lines) When In 3D Mode Samsung 2233RZ 22-inch Bundle
1 / 11
I believe others have complained about this as well, but it is worth repeating. I am having one annoying problem with this 3D technology that is preventing World of Warcraft from looking as good as it should: A grainy texture when in 3D mode. It looks as if there are little horizontal lines across the screen which causes a "textured" or "fuzzy/grainy" look. This is only in 3D mode -- if I disable the 3D component of the driver this annoying texture goes away. If I alt-tab to the desktop, the annoying texture goes away.
This texture problem (horizontal line problem?) only appears when in full-screen 3D mode. It is in World of Warcraft, but also in any 3D game / environment. For example, the driver setup pages have this same grainy texture (horizontal lines) when configuring the 3D.
I bought the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ 22-inch monitor nVidia Vision bundle through TigerDirect.com.
I am using an XFX GeForce GTX 260 Black Edition video card
Gigabyte motherboard (I can dig up the exact model number if it is important)
I have installed the latest drivers for both the card and the 3D Vision. I even downloaded and installed the beta drivers that are currently available. (I have tried 1.04, and the 1.05 beta)
I have verified that the monitor cable (the DVI dual-link included with the monitor) is firmly affixed to both ends.
The product technically works just fine. The 3D looks great, and I'm very excited to see continued support for this product and World of Warcraft specifically. If you get these kinks worked out, my wife wants to upgrade her computer too. At the moment, I'm just concerned about this grainy texture problem (horizontal lines problem) that might be hardware specific. (Are these Samsung monitors not all they are cracked up to be? We obviously don't have much choice right now, and I assumed this bundle and combination of hardware would have been thoroughly tested. I was surpirised to even see this problem -- considering this technology is offered as A BUNDLE and we are just going along for the ride on hardware that should already be tested TOGETHER.)
Anyway, hopefully a driver patch or something can fix this problem. World of Warcraft will look amazing in 3D, if you can just GET RID OF THOSE HORIZONTAL LINES!!

My mind is all discombobulated from reading posts in these forums for hours now but what i remember i might be able to help you.
i would try switching to DX 9, I heard of people having good results with wow and DX 9.
Also Im not sure but it could just be your video card has some problem with the drivers which is what you were talking about and im pretty sure thats what your prob is.
Unless you can either A. find someone who plays WoW, has the bundle kit, and has the same problem you have, than im not sure your gana find a deffinet answer :(
Or you could get another video card that people on the forums claim works flawlessly so far i seen 8800 GTS, GTX and i think GT are safe for sure so far...

It occurred to me that I have a EVGA GeForce 8800 GT that I upgraded to my XFX GeForce GTX 260. In other words, I have a card that can technically do 3D, even if not as fast.
So I put my old card back in, and fired up Warcraft. The grainy texture (horizontal lines) issue is still there. I'm not sure if I'm glad about this or not, it would have been an easier fix had it just been the video card causing the problems. But I guess my new card is off the hook.
By the way, doesn't that seem like a very small jump in frames per second for those two cards? Maybe I'm also experiencing the "low frames in WoW" problem others are seeing. Hopefully nVidia will get this ironed out soon -- this is so much fun playing in 3D I just want it to look CLEAR and FAST. That isn't too much to ask, is it? :-)

So, I get this issue with both cards:
EVGA GeForce 8800 GT (11 fps)
XFX GeForce GTX 260 (21 fps)

I went to Best Buy this morning and bought the most expensive dual link DVI cable they sell ($100). This did NOT fix the problem. I was hoping it was just a bum cable.
So I've swapped out the video cards, and the dual-link DVI cables. I wonder if the monitor is bad?
I would love to hear confirmation from anyone using the Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ 22-inch LCD display that is currently bundled with this nVidia Vision product. It would seem that a lot of people are buying this setup because it comes as a bundle. I'm wondering if this problem is on every monitor (it it just how these look in 3D and there isn't much I can do about it?)
Thank you for your feedback.
Once again, the problem is very simple: in 3D mode only, there appear to be little "horizontal lines" across the display, giving the appearance of a "grainy texture" while in 3D mode. It isn't the end of the world, but does detract from what could be vibrant, beautiful 3D.

Bumping this because I'm hoping to get some more feedback. Even if you aren't having this issue, please let me know. I need to know if my monitor is bad, or if this is a universal problem with the Samsung monitor.
If you have this Samsung 120Hz monitor, please let me know whether you get horizontal lines in 3D mode. Thanks.

I've seen the same issue in WoW. It only happens in full-screen mode, though I've not toggled the stereoscopic feature in the control panel to confirm that it goes away if that part of the driver is de-activated (WoW fps is so bad in stereoscopic for me that I just play in windowed mode currently).
I can state that it's not likely the monitor unless it happens to be a flaw with most all of the Samsung monitors. I've tested a couple of the Samsung 120Hz monitors now, and they've all experienced the same issue. Most likely something bad happening as a result of the stereoscopic part of the driver (I'll try to check tonight to confirm the statement in another thread that disabling this part of the driver gets rid of the issue). I've only seen this in WoW at this point, for whatever that is worth.

Thank you for the reply klausing, I appreciate it. It is actually encouraging to know that someone else has this issue, because I was very concerned that it was just a bad monitor.
I appreciate any more feedback when you test further. For me, it is definitely appearing in all games -- but WoW is the most noticable.
Hopefully a driver update can address it in the future. I can be patient for a driver, I just wasn't sure if I needed to return this monitor and get a new one.
Anyone else able to confirm/deny that they get this issue? Thanks in advance.

Issue in all games sounds serious. I would contact tech support asap before return date expired. DR

I just got my bundle today, same as yours, and I have an 8800 GTS.
I have the same grain you are speaking of. I'm surprised it bothers you so much, I don't consider it an issue, it is minor and hardly worth noticing or worrying about. My guess is it's a by-product of the shuttering 3D effect.

Hey Sliksock,
First, thank you very much for your reply. Believe it or not I actually agree with you: this grainy issue isn't that big of a deal and I will have no problem accepting it and enjoying the 3D regardless. It is easy to overlook when you are playing a game and not focused on it.
However, my real issue was whether I was alone or not. You at least had the advantage of hearing someone else ask about it so you expected it. I wasn't sure if I was the only one with that grainy texture. In other words, is this just how it looks for everyone at this stage of the 3D game, or did I get a bum monitor?
If this is symptomatic of the current Samsung monitors with 3D Vision, I'm ok with that for now. I am having a blast playing Warcraft in 3D and won't switch back to 2D unless forced. :-) But I do notice that grainy texture, especially on the text in the chat channels, etc. and was concerned that I needed to act quickly to fix it before my return/replace window expired.
Your reply has cemented my decision: I'll just assume everyone has this grainy texture for now and ignore it. Maybe someday we'll have access to even better technology and can upgrade -- I'm hoping this product is a commercial success so it is continued and improved.
But: I still think it is useful to get this information out on the forums. The grainy texture isn't just in my head, even if it is a small thing. It would be awesome if a driver update was able to clear it up. Who knows?

Ok, so I attempted to turn off stereoscopic in the control panel, but WoW just kept turning it back on as soon as I switched to full screen. I then uninstalled the stereoscopic piece of the driver, rebooted to make sure there wasn't any remnant still running, and fired up WoW in full screen. The horizontal pattern was gone completely and things looked as crisp as they do playing in windowed mode.
My only conclusion is that it's not a problem with the monitor by any means, just a bad interaction of the stereoscopic part of the driver with WoW. I've not had a chance to try any other games yet to see if the same problem exists, but I don't personally recall seeing it to a point where I took notice (I definitely did in WoW as it stood out pretty badly on the action bars and on the small font I use in my chat windows).

I believe you guys are complain about the screen door effect, the text looks normal with out the glasses but computer is in 3D then with the glasses all text and some textrues will get a screen door effect.
If this is what you are seeing it is your brain that is doing this as it cant put together the checkerboard effect 100% its gets very close, this causes a little specs or screendoor on text.
To test it take off glasses and look at the 3D screen and look at the text, is it gone?
If you see when your glasses are off you might be discussing and different issue, hope that helps...

Thanks for the reply pappmasta. The answer is yes: I can still see it without the glasses. In fact, it is actually "worse" without the glasses -- with the glasses on it is easier to get "used to".
What you are saying makes sense, but I don't think that is the cause. There are horizontal lines even without the glasses, but only in 3D mode. Hopefully it is just a driver issue that can be patched.
Here is another way to describe it: it is as if the images are switching so quickly between the two images that you can actually see the "white light" running across the row of pixels. This extra "white line" on every or every other row of pixels creates this texture look. It isn't just in our imaginations, I swear. I call my wife over every now and again to confirm I'm not just seeing things.

Yes, this describes it exactly. It only happens while in 3D mode -- so hopefully it really is the driver. Windows, in 120 Hz mode (no 3D driver) works just fine and everything is crisp. So it would *seem* that the monitor is quite capable of displaying this refresh rate without issues.
However, who knows? Does switching the pixels that "dramatically" 120 times per second cause the problem? Is the monitor "just barely" able to keep up and this causes the effect? I don't know the answer to that.
I'm hopeful an updated driver can fix the issue.
BTW, to help troubleshoot further I put this monitor on my wife's computer and installed the 3D driver. She has Vista 32 and I have Vista 64, one of the things I wanted to help isolate.
Bottom line: the problem is still there. So at this point I've swapped out literally every other component, including the DVI cable, and it is only the monitor that remains. So -- it is either a driver issue or a monitor issue. Oh well, it really isn't that big of a deal, just kind of strange that nVidia and Samsung wouldn't have noticed it. :-)

I've not had a chance to try any other games yet to see if the same problem exists, but I don't personally recall seeing it to a point where I took notice (I definitely did in WoW as it stood out pretty badly on the action bars and on the small font I use in my chat windows).
Windows Vista 64 bit, 8 gigs of RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo processor @ 3.6 Ghz / core (overclocked 8400)

So I put my old card back in, and fired up Warcraft. The grainy texture (horizontal lines) issue is still there. I'm not sure if I'm glad about this or not, it would have been an easier fix had it just been the video card causing the problems. But I guess my new card is off the hook.
So, I get this issue with both cards:
EVGA GeForce 8800 GT (11 fps)
XFX GeForce GTX 260 (21 fps)
By the way, doesn't that seem like a very small jump in frames per second for those two cards? Maybe I'm also experiencing the "low frames in WoW" problem others are seeing. Hopefully nVidia will get this ironed out soon -- this is so much fun playing in 3D I just want it to look CLEAR and FAST. That isn't too much to ask, is it? :-)

Who knows?
