Having played for a week or so now without any luck, today I'd finally raised a ticket with Rockstar highlighting the problem of shadows eventually rendering incorrectly to 2D, but so far this has solved it, though I'll keep on testing. For the time being I've switched off V-synch in the NVCP and in-game. Many thanks.

Spoke too soon. Play tested for a prolonged period before confirming your solution, tried the game again, and then after a couple of minutes it did it again. It was worth a try, but when it does work though, this game looks fantastic.

For me going from non-SLI (mid 20s fps), to dual SLI (high 30s fps) is a very rough gauge of the average increase in frame rates running in 3D. Top fps range usually spikes up to 55-60. I don't experience any stutter even at those relatively low average frame rates in SLI, so the improvement using SLI is definitely noticeable.

My GTA V settings.xml file is set to be reasonably high quality, at 720p.
Ran the batch file, then straight away ran the game. (It can be handy to run the batch file from a console so you can see any errors.)
I was hopeful, and at first all was well. Then at the 15 minute mark, 3D failed as usual, went back to 2D. Since I was in the middle of a mission, and GTA V is so stingy with the save oppurtunities, I kept playing in 2D for another 5 minutes.
And then... there was a Christmas Miracle. Stereoscopic rendering suddenly started working again. I played for another hour and 45 minutes before I quit, and 3D was still going strong.
I don't know what made a difference, the batch file, the full uninstall, or just persevering through the 2D dead spot. I'll be interested to see if it works next time.
Have to again say that, when this game is working in stereo, it's one of the best, if not the best, stereoscopic experiences I've seen.

I reset my CPU to it's base clocks to see how CPU bound I was and it definitely had at least a 20% hit going back to 2.8 Ghz.
I still don't understand why I'm getting a 70% higher hit running in 3D though. Without 3D, I get 80-90 fps on GTX 670 SLI based on my settings.

Hi guys, I've had some time to install and run tests. Here is what I have found.
Cores are set by using the task manager affinity.
For meaningful results from the SLi setup, im going to combine both core usages and divide the result by 2 to give a percentage of overall GPU power being utilised.
Configuration in signature.
Resolution = 2560x1600
VSync Off
All other game options at lowest setting for obvious reasons.

Intel Xeon x5660 @ [b]4.2GHz[/b]
1 cores = 12 fps
2 cores = 40 fps, 35% 46%, Total GPU Usage = 40%
3 cores = 50 fps, 37% 60%, Total GPU Usage = 48%
4 cores = 50 fps, 37% 60%, Total GPU Usage = 48%
5 cores = 50 fps, 37% 60%, Total GPU Usage = 48%
6 cores = 50 fps, 37% 60%, Total GPU Usage = 48%
6 cores 2D = 138fps 97% 98% (toggled off), Total GPU Usage = 97%

[b]1.[/b] While GTA5 in 2D uses all 6 cores to almost saturation (5 cores approaching 100% saturation), as soon as 3D is enabled, it drops down to only 3 cores being almost saturated. Adding more cores does not yield any more core usage, nor GPU usage.

So, ladies and gents, from the results, the conclusion seems to be that the game becomes severely CPU limited as soon as 3D kicks in as it loses the ability to use more than 3 cores, thereby also severely degrading GPU scaling in the process.
The end result: 3D fps drops to ~35% of 2D fps.
Since I have seen similar problems with games such as AC4 Black Flag, and CoD: Advanced Warfare, it seems as though it is a 3D Vision Driver optimisation problem.
I would also conjecture that we have not seen this before as only recently have games started using more than 2 cores. The driver may well have been designed to only work with a small number of cores.

That's an interesting question. As CM works in a fundamentally different way, I would have said no; but if I recall correctly, AC4:Black Flag and CoD: Advanced Warfare both had a huge hit in CM compared with 3D set to off in the CP; although not as big as real 3D.
I'd be more than happy to update benchmarks if there is a way to test CM with this game. AFAIK, CM mode doesn't work with it?

Another update regarding Cpu performance.
I overclocked my 4690 to 4.4ghz and gained an extra 5fps average so it would seem the game likes high individual core speed considering my fx8350 was clocked at 4.5ghz

That currently stands as the best explanation for poor 3D scaling, including SLI. Something about the 3D driver itself prevents proper core scaling for games that support it. This explains a lot.
Probably the driver is overusing critical locks to avoid multi-threaded problems, which prevents other work from going to other cores. This is also very, very, bad, in that we don't have any workaround for this. Assuming this is true, that means that anything more than a 3 cores won't be used, and puts 3D Vision on higher resolutions like 1440p into question.

Came here and registered to complain about SLI and 3D Vision. Just recieved my 2 970 cards and I get worse performance on SLI then on one GPU, wtf nVidia??? Afterburner shows ~84% CPU usage and cards are often used under and about 50%! Thats no scaling at all... is this a bad joke? FIX IT ASAP!

SLI is indeed fully supported with GTAV, however in the process of some troubleshooting steps, we do ask that you disable any active SLI that you may have in order to help fully figure out what is causing an issue which we are trying to troubleshoot.
We took a look into this issue for you, and GTAV does have support for 3D Vision in compatibility mode as Nvidia has not released a full 3D profile for GTAV as of yet. We are aware that there may be some rendering issues with this, and there are some reports of this that we have received and are looking at further. any point upgrading my 3930k CPU? My titan x usage goes as low as 30% usage. GTA V is unplayable for me right now. It's great spending 1400 CAD on a video card and only getting 30% of it's usage. LOL.

Edit: Next game, 3D failed at 15 minutes, shadows and flares borked, and about 23 minutes the game crashed.
So it looks like the good run was just a fluke.

I still don't understand why I'm getting a 70% higher hit running in 3D though. Without 3D, I get 80-90 fps on GTX 670 SLI based on my settings.

Cores are set by using the task manager affinity.
For meaningful results from the SLi setup, im going to combine both core usages and divide the result by 2 to give a percentage of overall GPU power being utilised.

All other game options at lowest setting for obvious reasons.

6 cores 2D = 138fps 97% 98% (toggled off), Total GPU Usage = 97%

Conclusions:
1. While GTA5 in 2D uses all 6 cores to almost saturation (5 cores approaching 100% saturation), as soon as 3D is enabled, it drops down to only 3 cores being almost saturated. Adding more cores does not yield any more core usage, nor GPU usage.
2. GPU usage scales well with CPU clock and usage all the way up to 100%, which indicates that there is no "GPU underutilisation" problem. I would recommend overclocking your CPU as high as possible for best results.
So, ladies and gents, from the results, the conclusion seems to be that the game becomes severely CPU limited as soon as 3D kicks in as it loses the ability to use more than 3 cores, thereby also severely degrading GPU scaling in the process.
The end result: 3D fps drops to ~35% of 2D fps.
Since I have seen similar problems with games such as AC4 Black Flag, and CoD: Advanced Warfare, it seems as though it is a 3D Vision Driver optimisation problem.
I would also conjecture that we have not seen this before as only recently have games started using more than 2 cores. The driver may well have been designed to only work with a small number of cores.

That's an interesting question. As CM works in a fundamentally different way, I would have said no; but if I recall correctly, AC4:Black Flag and CoD: Advanced Warfare both had a huge hit in CM compared with 3D set to off in the CP; although not as big as real 3D.
I'd be more than happy to update benchmarks if there is a way to test CM with this game. AFAIK, CM mode doesn't work with it?

I overclocked my 4690 to 4.4ghz and gained an extra 5fps average so it would seem the game likes high individual core speed considering my fx8350 was clocked at 4.5ghz

That currently stands as the best explanation for poor 3D scaling, including SLI. Something about the 3D driver itself prevents proper core scaling for games that support it. This explains a lot.
Probably the driver is overusing critical locks to avoid multi-threaded problems, which prevents other work from going to other cores. This is also very, very, bad, in that we don't have any workaround for this. Assuming this is true, that means that anything more than a 3 cores won't be used, and puts 3D Vision on higher resolutions like 1440p into question.
