were the shadows ok with GTA4? because they are broken with episode liberty city
No, I played with shadows off in GTA4. Trust me without the shadows also the game looks insane in 3D. The depth and the pop out are too good that you will just ignore the shadows once you get into the 3D aspect of this game :) Are you saying that the same fix of GTA4 worked in liberty city as well but with only shadows broken?

In that also the shadows are broken and you have to turn them off to play it properly in 3D
It really does cut the FPS in half...and maybe a little more. I really like the idea of 3D and i really think it's the future of gaming and movie but personally i will need to wait some more. Maybe later this year i will replay my older games in 3D.
Well 3D looks to be the biggest reason for me to wait for Haswell-E and Maxwell 800s. It really does cut your FPS in 1/2, because your GPU renders each frame 2 times (3D is Length, Width and Depth). As of what I hear, 3D is best when you have it fixed at 60FPS, but when you think about it, this is even more FPS than on a normal 3D cinema (24FPS) and IMAX 3D cinema (48FPS). Clearly that is impossible to achieve as I see with 1 GPU. Even with 2-way SLI, it might be a big boundary on some resolutions (1440p and 4K). I am now wodering, will 2 GTX 870s give me enough performance for 3D on a 1440p for 60FPS? However, as you said, yes it is a future of gaming, but it's the future in Virtual Reality Gaming (remember Oculus Rift is 3D as well?) It's great that we will finally have a consumer grade this year which will be a 1080p 3D display, but most worrying thing is that you MUST make sure 60FPS is the minimum you get on a game on your 3D 1080p screen (when stereoscopic 3D vision is turned on), since it is minimum requirement for Oculus Rift. The recommended FPS on this VR display however is 120FPS, so, I don't see how would you achieve this, or close to this, unless with SLI... Prepare for double $ on electricity bills if you are going for 3D gaming :D

3D gaming is like buying as expensive car, if you can't afford to maintain and insure the car, you can't afford to drive it. In the last 2 years since I started 3D gaming I believe I've spent £1000 on graphics card upgrades, £350 on 3D glasses and £775 on a monitor and projector. Next I'll be buying the Oculus and will have to consider replacing my SLI 670's with something more powerful. Its expensive, but worth it.

I guess if I wanna play on 1440p 3D monitor, it will require a beast of PC...Oh well, as I thought, there is no going around SLI...Nvidia and AMD will need to hurry up, more performance is needed!

Really late to the party but never got to play gta4. Today I tried the game and the patch on helixmod and it works well but it has broken shadows, and apparently there's no fix for them according to the comments. I tried compatibility mode and it didn't work, however the old trick of low depth / high convergence makes the game reasonably playable with shadows and everything on, so if anyone hasn't played gta4 yet you could try that out.
