Steam Box - Biggest Hope for 3D and Gaming Innovation?
2 / 2
Could be interesting I suppose (half life 3 on the box?) but i'm more looking forward to the Playstation 4 gaming console, well, that's if the PS4 hardware specifications are indeed correct? :), rumours say 8 GB of DDR 5 RAM, if so, wow, faster than PC RAM, I wonder if PC memory makers are designing new DDR 5 sticks of ram now? :)
New consoles could not have come a moment sooner. New consoles always help spur development of new IPS, graphical techniques and physics. The work done on consoles always positively filters over to PC. The fact is is x86 architecture can only help make this process easier and mor streamlined. Hopefully all the optimising on consoles will really help for more efficient code on PC also. It certainly must be easier than cross coding for Power PC, Cell and x86 procs.
You know, I'm excited and afraid about oculus, if indeed they get the consumer model at 1080p, we now need our rigs to dual render full HD at 60 fps no matter what. That's going to need some serious hardware.
Lol, damned true. Hence why I have said next year (if nvidia line keeps steady and OR consumer model is out) I will be buying two gtx 880's...If i play VR I want as close to 0 latency as possible. Although looking at current chip movements, maybe 780 will only be coming out in 2014? Titan is a strange move if gtx 780 is on the horizon... I really hope that's not the case, but with amd going AWAL on PC Until 2014 it's certainly a possibilty.

About the oculus rift, every day has better news than the day before, and apparently EA is thinking on adding support for their frostbite engine : http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/05/ea-may-bring-dragon-age-battlefield-to-oculus-rift . OR future looks really good, and the Steambox supporting it would ensure day 1 purchase for me no doubt, no matter if it's linux or not.

I wouldnt get too excited about frostbite. This is where one journalist writes one thing then another misunderstands and writes something else.
Its covered on MTBS. They were looking for someone to come to there studio and implement into the engine on their own dime... Not sure how that will turn out. I strongly doubt they will add support for dragon age (Its not really a VR game at all, not first person, low fov, doesnt benefit from head tracking). I think they were just looking into it for Battlefield and IF a new mirrors edge is in production.
That said I bought it and januarary and still look forward to it.

Is anybody else prying that they are a "freak"? LOL
I was looking at the Sony one, then the Rift then decided that I'd wait until they got the bugs worked out.
DirectX: I thought OpenGL ran great on Lynix? Considering that the PS4 will be OpenGL based, it could be an easy port - however I don't recall Nvidia/AMD showing much love to Lynix. My guess is that Steam is working on beefing up and optimizing DX to OGL translation in a Lynix driver.

I was talking about it with someone else, Playing less then 30fps is a huge issue in 3D for many people. Adapting/length can improve this but I still dont recommend playing lower then 30fps.
People want graphical games like battlefield in 3D which is insane since probably 50-60fps is going to be required. There are too many people that have never played 3D / VR excited about the rift.
They had a video where they talked about this. With gradual expanding playtimes. I dont remember where anymore. The options for eyes are rather impressive.

Which is why by the time I get a consumer OR (i guess 2014) I will go sli gtx880. You're going to need them even at 1080 resolution if you want non-nausea inducing gaming with the OR.

Damn I was writing a long rumbling about the OR and nvidia and my fumbely finger tuch some buttom and it went off :/
Well I was saying I think this will take of as this is the holy grail of gaming and I wouldent be to surprised if the big nvidia themself has some eyes on this tech.
Imagine 4k resolution with OLED screens and faster, better in every way then the Oculus, then what ? :)
If this will be a sucess and I really think so then maybe nvidia comes out with a better VR headset as they really have the cash to make it dont you think ?
About 4k, alright we will then need a hell of a comp to run the games but I think that OLED is like say the old CRT, you can choose a different resolution and it wont be any fuzzines like on a LCD screen right ?

To be honest I get the feeling Nvidia is stepping away from the hardware side of 3D, but maybe I'm wrong. Nvidia are wrapped up in Tegra, and it looks like NVidia 3D hardware hasn't had any love for a year. Hopefully they will be supporting OR via 3D driver updates. This way they can treat it as a compliment good, that will help Nvidia sell lots of high spec GTX's.
As for running 4K resolution... lol. I don't know. If you look at the performance hit of resolution in super widescreen gaming, you will see it really does grind computers to a halt.
VR requires incredibly high min frame rate to lower latency (great articles found about this on the net) 60 min FPS is seen as the base minimum for OR to be a pleasant experience.
4K res with 60min? Not happening soon on any modern game. It will happen eventually though. One problem I see with VR is, to make it so that the eye can't see any pixels, aka 'retina', you would need a resolution so insanely high I can't imagine we'll be playing with something like that this century, let alone within our lives.
Still, from reviews the OR's incredibly low resolution didn't seem to nirk people that much. I'm sure a 1080 panel (hopefully in the consumer version) will be a wonderful experience regardless.

All it'll take is a few people whining about motion sickness and a few articles on big gaming sites "OR IS DEAD, THANK GOD!" and before you know it every little whiny snotty nose punk will be running around crying "OR is dead!" & "it's just a gimmick!" like the little lemmings they are
... cliff's this way! --->
For now it's news, it's keeping those gaming news sites in business ... just like 3D was. All the hype, all the articles but eventually it'll wear off and they'll stab it in the back just so they have another sh-tty article to write
