Steam put up a teaser page for a new head mounted display called the Valve Index
https://store.steampowered.com/sale/valve_index/
I assume this is a VR headset, since that is what they were rumored to be working on. Or could it be WMR?

It looks like it will be a typical narrow FOV, so nothing ground breaking there. Hopefully, it has great displays or something to set it apart.
I can't help but wonder if they have some special game to go along with it at launch.
Valve also recently fired quite a few of their VR employees. Was it because this end product isn't up to snuff? Perhaps this is the first and last head mounted display from Steam?

There is just so much wrong with this post...sigh...
>I assume this is a VR headset, since that is what they were rumored to be working on. Or could it be WMR?
WMR (Windows Mixed Reality) is just Microsoft's term for VR. It's also VR. There is no difference between VR and WMR.
>It looks like it will be a typical narrow FOV, so nothing ground breaking there. Hopefully, it has great displays or something to set it apart.
How would you discern the FOV of the device from the picture? Judging from the massively big (!) lenses, we can expect a large FOV. Rumours are it has 130+FOV so it would be wider FOV than Oculus Rift.
>I can't help but wonder if they have some special game to go along with it at launch.
They already said they will release this with 3 titles...Half-Life VR is likely.
>Valve also recently fired quite a few of their VR employees. Was it because this end product isn't up to snuff? Perhaps this is the first and last head mounted display from Steam?
Valve already said that the "firing" of the people had nothing to do with VR, in fact all (?) their VR people are still happily working there from what I read. That people were let go "because their end product is not up to snuff" is a silly assumption

Yah, whatever
VR amd WMR devices are not the same.
WMR uses inside out tracking and you have to keep LOS on the controllers, VR uses external base stations, so the controllers are tracked, even behind your back.
Also Valve has not mentioned releasing games at launch with the device. Their VR games have been in development for a long time and might be vaporware like other games of theirs that never came to be.
Yes, Valve released "half" of their VR employees. That right there should tell you that it is not business as usual. Something has been shelved. Not to mention that their SteamVR update today is borked.
130 degree FOV, I'll believe it when I see it. To me it doesn't look that big, unless those hands are gigantic in real life.

WMR is an umbrella term for MS HMDs and HoloLens. VR means "Virtual Reality", nothing more.
How tracking is done has nothing to do with "VR". It's just different tech.
"Oculus Rift S" will also have inbuilt camera tracking btw.
And for FOV ... www.pimaxvr.com

Well said
OK. my bad, I was under the impression that Steam was building something with LightHouse Tracking. Not just another inside out type HMD like the WMR devices that we have seen. Hopefully the Index is a standout among the rest. The Steam Link and Controller were well made pieces of hardware, I'm hoping this is as well. But I will not be holding my breath.
It would be an instant buy if they launched it May 4th with an exclusive/decent Star Wars game :P

Atleast according to one video this uses lighthouse tracking as there is marks on the unit if you bump up the brightness. So
The cameras would be for passtrough or Something like that.
Though i don’t understand why Couldnt you use both simultaneusly for tracking, Wouldnt that make it even more accurate ?
Personally i Hope its great but wont believe untill its out.
I have my Hope on yhe xtal gamer edition or some future business edition of xtal that can deliver me movie theater like
Experience with games so i can switch my dual projection system for just one jvc projector.
Though these Things usually take time and i may find my self updating my projectors At the start of next year

This image shows that it uses a Display Port connection, I typed in the controller address shown, but it just defaulted to Steam's Home Page.

It was a wip/placeholder that was leaked or accidentally uploaded, then taken down.
These type of marketing stunts suck and make me think that it's doesn't bring much to the table. Otherwise why not just send out the product to journalists and have them post reviews?

Its how marketing works nowadays. You make tiny reveals, leaks, etc. Each time is a piece of news/hype and its not an information overload when its all revealed. Been following Persona 5 since I wanted to replay it and its way worse. There is a date set that revealed name. A date set for a new trailer. It will be three months before we know what it is.

LCD 1440×1600 Valve says that there’s 50% more sub-pixels in the LCD display than in an equivalent OLED display.
Claims perceived FOV is 130 due to the displays being canted by 5 degrees
Valves states a they will be releasing a VR game "sometime this year" but offer no details.
So um yah flexy456, what do you have to say?
I have to admit, I just saw the details today when I opened up Steam, and this seems enticing given the news regarding 3D Vision.
I have very limited experience with a VR headset and the screen door effect was TERRIBLE. Is there anyone here who could comment on how the specs of this Valve Index sound comparatively?

1440x1600 is just to low and too late. I bought and sold after 3 days the lenovo explorer 1440x1440, it was terible. Picture quality was horrid. The biggest problem of this HMDs is that they generate a lot of heat and you face starts to sweat.
When other are coming with 2160x2160....
