3D Gaming Questions
  1 / 4
I just started playing Rise of the Tomb Raider (Not the newest) and stumbled upon the 3d SBS setting and have been blown away by the 3D experience although my GTX 1060 in my laptop can only maintain a steady 60fps in the first zone and after that is garbage. This led me here which allowed me to discover that a game does not need native support to allow for 3D viewing which opened my mind to the possibilities. Here are some off my questions: [.]Does 3D gaming cause a performance hit? If so, how much?[/.] [.]Does 3D vision use "Frame Packing"? If so, what is better: 3d vision or SBS? Or is it game dependent?[/.] [.]What other software can be used for making games play in 3D? I have heard of TriDef but was wondering what other options are available[/.] [.]My TV claims to support 1080i 60hz frame packing but when 3D vision is enabled, I can only choose 1080p 24hz. Any reason for this? Is it possible to force this?[/.] [.]What are some of the best games to experience in 3D?[/.] [.]If a game does not have a profile for it, is it possible to use a profile from another game? An example would be Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 which does not have a profile created but Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 does have a profile.[/.] [.]Is the 3DTV Play app required?[/.] [.]Is this the most active community regarding 3d gaming?[/.] Link to a snip from TV manual regarding supported resolutions : https://pasteboard.co/HGVjp3S.jpg Link to Full TV manual: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201209/20120910094456985/[ENG_US]WEB-XTATSCE-1015-0907.pdf I am sure some of these questions have been asked before and I am sure I will have more questions. Feel free to link me to other pages. I have always been a huge fan of at home 3D and have been sorely disappointed by its lack of adoption. It is great to see a community still working on it!

This led me here which allowed me to discover that a game does not need native support to allow for 3D viewing which opened my mind to the possibilities. Here are some off my questions:

  • Does 3D gaming cause a performance hit? If so, how much?

  • Does 3D vision use "Frame Packing"? If so, what is better: 3d vision or SBS? Or is it game dependent?

  • What other software can be used for making games play in 3D? I have heard of TriDef but was wondering what other options are available

  • My TV claims to support 1080i 60hz frame packing but when 3D vision is enabled, I can only choose 1080p 24hz. Any reason for this? Is it possible to force this?

  • What are some of the best games to experience in 3D?

  • If a game does not have a profile for it, is it possible to use a profile from another game? An example would be Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 which does not have a profile created but Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 does have a profile.

  • Is the 3DTV Play app required?

  • Is this the most active community regarding 3d gaming?

Welcome to the 3D World! First of all, check the Helixmod blog to see what games are fixed: https://helixmod.blogspot.com/ Game list: https://helixmod.blogspot.com/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html Some unfinished fixes can be found in these forums.
[.]Does 3D gaming cause a performance hit? If so, how much?[/.]
Generally, 2x GPU usage to get the same fps in 3D as in 2D. But CPU usage varies depending on the game and the scene.
[.]Does 3D vision use "Frame Packing"? If so, what is better: 3d vision or SBS? Or is it game dependent?[/.]
3D Vision is frame packed 3D, yes. With 3D Vision, you get 60 full resolution frames per eye. SBS reduces resolution by half in practice (wasted resources, except when a game has SBS natively like the Tomb Raider games).
[.]What other software can be used for making games play in 3D? I have heard of TriDef but was wondering what other options are available[/.]
There's Tridef, that doesn't work in normal 3D Vision monitors (it needs SBS, and maybe it is TAB compatible too, I don't know). But for game compatibility, the 3D Vision fixes of the blog are unmatched.
[.]My TV claims to support 1080i 60hz frame packing but when 3D vision is enabled, I can only choose 1080p 24hz. Any reason for this? Is it possible to force this?[/.]
There are stupid HDMI limits when using a 3D TV or projector, instead of a 3D Vision monitor. In DX11 games that have fixes, they use a dll and files called 3Dmigoto. With it, you can convert the 3D Vision image to SBS and other formats. Other than that, other people here can answer you better than me.
[.]What are some of the best games to experience in 3D?[/.]
This is personal preference (biased towards my own fixes mostly), and your taste matters too: The Witcher 3, Dark Souls games, Tekken 7, Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy, Ori and the Blind Forest... Just take a look at the fixes list and try some games you already own.
[.]If a game does not have a profile for it, is it possible to use a profile from another game? If there's a fix on the blog, it will usually tell you all you need to do to play it correctly. But for Harry Potter 1-4 there isn't a fix (I don't know if it needs it). If you want to change profiles, assign the game exe to another profile in Nvidia Inspector (assign a dummy exe to the old profile if you don't want to lose it, if it only contains one exe).
[.]Is the 3DTV Play app required?[/.]
I'll let others answer that question. I only use a 3D Vision monitor. welcome to 3D, you discovered it exactly the same way I did - stumbling upon ROTTR's native SBS support and giving it a shot. found this forum and the fixes shortly thereafter, upgraded my TV for better 3D and never looked back. incredibly difficult to play any game in 2D now...
incredibly difficult to play any game in 2D now...
This is what I fear. I am currently house sitting for my parents who have the 3D tv. Now I must seriously consider making a purchase of either a 3D TV or monitor for my self although I fear the monitor experience will not be the same as a 65 inch TV.

Generally: Are you sure you are talking about 1080i? I can't image how Interlaced works with Checkerboard or Line Interleaved (though LI is nearly the same, except you mean alternate frequency, then you see ... nothing. Kinda funny imagining it. :D ). 3D Vision supports much better options too. Of course I did point out the workarounds too, there are several. Did you get that 4. was solely about 3D TV Play? I'm sry, what's your whole point, don't get it? I didn't thought of checkerboard as his TV doesn't seem to support checkerboard. Of course he can give it a try, prob. looking better than SBS.

Line Interleaved and Checkerboard are considered Interlaced Formats. You said that there was not any 1080P or 1080i support above 24Hz, I corrected you. It's not well known. The frames are completely rendered whole, partial frames are sent out, the unsent portions are discarded.

They render as full frames because how else would they render? The wiki is for a graphics technique to enhance performance and not the stereoscopic format.

Looking to clear some more things up. So far I have not been able to get 3D to work on any game other than Rise of the Tomb Raider's native SBS. I am able to get 3D setting working through the Nvidia Control Panel and the test 3D app works great but when ever I start a game using the 3D Fix Manager, the games starts in normal mode. I found this in the list of known issues thread:
16. 32 inch limit in 3D TV Play blocks HDMI 1.4 compliant 3D monitors from working.
Since the TV I am using is a 65 inch TV, I think this might be part of the issue. The other idea I have is to use an EDID override as others have suggested. However, I am not sure it will work. Since I am using an active 3D TV and all of the posts I have read have been in regards to passive TVs. I am thinking a different EDID would cause issues with active glasses, yes? The other thing I have not tried is installing the 3DTV app and use the 14 day trial. The last thing I am going to try is this: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/73peh1/1080p60hz_hdmi_activepassive_output_without_3dtv/ This post may be frowned upon but considering it on the Nvidia reddit, I thought it would be alright. One thing I have noticed while playing tomb raider is a large amount of cross talk/ghosting in certain scenes. Most of the time it is not noticeable. I did try out a few of the test videos and all of them show the effect, not just Tomb Raider. This would then be an issue with my TV, correct? I have not tried a blu-ray 3D movie recently but I am thinking it is only an issue with SBS. I wish this was simpler :)

Thanks Zig. How would I know if if my TV supports frame interlaced? I will try that override later.

Sometimes this is due to unwanted processing on the TV side of things, but generally I would say crosstalk is a function of the display, then to a lesser extent the glasses. You can mitigate this by a number of methods. 1. If it's an LCD display, make sure it's had time to warm up. 2. Play around with brightness and contrast, you might find a sweet spot. 3. Reduce depth and play with convergence to get the effect you want 4. Try different glasses, although like I say, the display itself is normally the main factor. I'm a bit unclear, what model number is your TV and is it active or passive? Active from what I can see? I think you're stuck with 3dtvplay, but with an EDID override to enable 'optimised for geforce', then you can use the 3dmigoto settings for DX11+ games to enable SBS etc. Not sure if you still need an emitter for that, sorry I'm tired and hungry :-) Glad you're enjoying the experience, good luck.
