Geforce 3D Vision and Intermittent Flashing
  1 / 4
Hi guys, new to these boards. Just wanted to post a technical issue.

I just got my Geforce 3D Vision with the Samsung 2233RZ 120Hz monitor pack. It works for the most part, but I get this intermittent flashing in the glasses when I play a game in 3D. Like one of the lenses will flash very brightly very briefly. Its very distracting when I'm playing. Does this mean I have defective glasses?

My current system:
Intel E8200
MSI P43 Neo
4GB DDR2-1066
BFG Geforce GTX 280 (181.22 WHQL)
3DVision glasses (CD 1.03 Jan 19th (latest))
Windows Vista 64-bit

Could it also be because I'm using a different display driver than the one provided in the latest 3dvision pack? (181.20 crashes Fallout 3 though).

Update:

I rolled back my drivers and completely installed everything from the latest 3dvision cdpack from NVIDIA's website (1.03 Jan 19th, and therefore the 181.20 drivers). The flashing is still there however. But I've also noticed it occurs differently in different games. It doesn't happen that often in Left 4 Dead, for example, but in Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare it happens so frequently that it makes the game unplayable.

The same thing happens to me as well. It happened so frequently when I first installed the boxed drivers that it was unusable. Curiously, this only occurred to the right lens. I unstalled all drivers and reinstalled the latest (1/19) and the latest display driver - an error message popped up stating that the 3d drivers were designed for the older display driver but I ignored it. The flashing now doesn't occur as frequently - every now and then it'll flash - the right lens only. It's annoying but I can deal. I would like however to submit a tech support ticket but there's no way to do it it would seem since the support page provides 3rd party company web sites instead.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get in touch with someone over at Nvidia for tech support and feedback? The fact that this flashing occurs troubles me. I'd like to know whether this is a hardware issue or a driver issue.

This happens to me only when I'm using the wheel on the back of the emitter to adjust the depth. I think it's because my hand is covering the IR signal or something.

edit: Oh, as far as getting in touch with tech support, I'd try the 800-number that's printed on the quick start guide that came with the glasses.

I just called their tech support and also left a ticket in their knowledgebase. I got a number for a second-level tech support group that I will be calling when I get home. Hopefully we can resolve this issue or pinpoint it as a driver issue, in which case we'll just have to wait for a newer driver. I just hope that its not defective hardware.

Hi

Congratulations on your purchase and you are definitely doing the right thing to get support.

There could be a few reasons for your flickering and we have some knowledge base articles online which could help. Take a look here.

Lol! Should've thought of that. Brain fart on my part. I'll do the same if only for the purpose of getting this issue out there.

I'm still talking to tech support on this, but I found reducing the refresh rate in the 3D Vision Setup from the NVIDIA Control Panel to 100 Hz helps a lot, although the flashes still occur. This lower refresh rate also is a harder strain on my eyes, so I'm still hoping for a better solution that allows me to run at 120 Hz.

Just out of curiosity, did you try running at 120 Hz and turn off your room lighting?

Yes, I've tried all different sorts of configurations. All the refresh rates with the lights completely off, a few lights on, the window blinds open so sunlight comes through, etc. The lighting situation doesn't seem to affect this issue, just the refresh rate. No matter what sort of lighting I have, the lenses will flash either alot at 120 Hz, or with reduced frequency at 100 Hz.

My glasses will go white vary briefly maybe once every 5 or 10 minutes in WoW. However, I don't really find it that distracting. How often in a 5 - 10 minute period would you say it happens for you?

Edit:

I spoke too soon. All of sudden my glasses are now flashing several times a minute. I've been moving stuff around so the glasses might not like the current position of the emitter. I'll play with it a bit and see if I can make the problem go away.

I had this exact problem happen to me in WoW. Flashing every few seconds or so in the right lense only for me. I solved it by turning off SLI (I have 2 8800 cards in my alienware). Turn SLI back on, flashing came back. Turn it off, goes away completely.

Interesting.. My flashing is happening in the right lense as well. I've got Sli (via a 295 GTX). I will turn of sli and see if it helps.

Now I'm getting mixed results. I turned off sli and got maybe 1 flash in a 5 minute period. However, when I turned sli back on again, I got the same results (1 flash in a 5 minute period).

Early this evening, I used the glasses for about 4 - 5 hours and turned them off because of the constant flashing (which started later in the playing sessions). I then let the glasses charge for 3 hours and tried doing the sli tests. At this point, I can't really nail down what was causing the flashing. I'm going to leave it in sli and see if it starts flashing again. If it does, I'll turn sli off right away and see if that fixes it. I also just turned PhysX off so maybe that had something to do with it (or maybe not)..

I am getting similar flashes on my system and I am not using SLI. For me it seems to be stray IR flashed caused from remote extenders which interfere with the sync of the glasses. During the initial setup you are given a choise between three options for the IR emitter, the default left, middle, and right. The middle works best for my configuration, and the right is the worst.

However, while UT2004 now works perfectly whereas before it flashed every 3 minutes, FS2004 still seems to flash. FS2004 was about as bad as UT2004, flashing every 3 minutes, now it only flashes every ten minutes or so. Furthermore, about once an hour the 3D effect goes out all together, the bright green indicator is still lit and the screen is still in stereo, but the glasses stop shuttering. My guess is that it is still getting some stray IR light which is causing some confusion within the glasses as this happens in both applications/games even after changing the emitter setup. I don't understand why the flashing seems to be application/game specific, maybe a driver bug?
