Hmm, not a bad idea. But wouldn't really suit me. I'm not too fond of touchscreen gaming, and I don't realise use TV. The idea is that I could play something handheld next to my wife while she's watching TV, or else on the couch in my study (where I don't have a TV)

Vita + PS4 is a better choice, other than the Vita has fantastic games like Tearaway, Killzone, Gravity Rush, Little BIg Planet, Dragon Crown etc of its own, I can't wait to remote play games from PS4 like Elder Scrolls Online, Injustice, etc. anywhere at home, even through wifi it works rather well, and MMORPGs can tolerate a lot of latency so I can't wait to play DC Online on my Vita anywhere. I have a 3DS and I love it, luigi mansion is great, but if you're looking for more than a zillion Mario games and JRPGs, Vita is a far better portable.

Hmm, I'll look into a vita. Though if I'm honest, the last thing I need is more games. My backlog is bad enough already. A Shield will at least give me more opportunities to play the games I've already paid for.
Though I can imagine getting a PS4 at some stage. There were some killer games that I missed out on on consoles this time round (Red Dead Redemption, Metal Gear Solid, etc.), and it'd be nice to not have to miss out again. So a vita might be a good investment, whereas it sounds like a 3DS isn't getting more relevant any time soon.
It's not touchscreen if you're using an xbox controller. Mine works fine from a few rooms away.
So you juggle an android device and a gamepad at the same time?

I have a case that doubles as a stand, works well enough for occasional use.
If you're worried about having missed out on the "last" gen, it's well worth buying a PS3 now. There are some fantastic titles out for it, and you could get one on the cheap.

Actually, Vita is a great purchase if you missed PS3 games, since you will be able to stream PS3 games on the Vita with Gaikai next year. At home in my couch I want to play 3d at 100'', but on the go, PS3 classics that you can only play in 2d anyway are a perfect fit for the Vita.
Also, any PC player will have a tough time playing PS3 games, recently I tried to play Red Dead Redemption and the aliasing was so bad I had to stop playing, 100'' screen and PS3 are a big no no.
Yeah, I'm a big Vita fan if you haven't noticed!

Two issues. Firstly, I believe that's US only (at least for now)? Secondly, on the go? You'd need one hell of a 4G connection for that, unless you mean while connected to wifi.

What sold me on the 3DS over the Vita was the 3D AND hoped that a dedicated gaming system might play games better than my EVO-3D. (plus I have other Nintendo portable HW and like some of their games) Games DO play better (IMHO, because of the controls, not the somewhat 'jerky' movement at times that Bob also noted) even if the 3DS screen is lower resolution and CPU/GPU is underpowered as compared to the EVO. My first game for the 3DS (LOZ OOT) looks pretty darn amazing for a portable system.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Super Mario 3D Land, LOZ OOT and even Animal Crossing:New Leaf look pretty decent in autostereoscopic 3D. Starfox64 3D looks pretty amazing. I just turn the effect down so that its not so jarring when you move in/out of the 'sweet spot'. If the effect in/out bothers you, the 3D can always be turned off.
If your thinking of getting a Vita there still might be the older (more expensive) OLED ones available. That beautiful OLED screen (and dual analog sticks) are big selling points for that one.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I ended up requesting a Shield for xmas. I'm enjoying it so far - it's a really elegant and well-thought out device. The android gaming works well, and the PC streaming is great.(though I needed to buy a new router that was compatible with it). I kind of didn't know whether to believe that game streaming could actually work well, but it does. Feels nice playing AC4 with max settings on a handheld, and the latency is very slight.
The screen could be a tad bigger and less reflective, but apart from that, it's great. I haven't missed 3D much - I guess on a tiny screen on the couch I'm going for convenience and comfort rather than immersion.
