3D TV Advice Which is the best 3dtv?
Hi there guys,

I am looking to buy a new 3dtv (About 47") which I would like to use with my ASUS G73JW-3DE notebook.

1. Which Type of 3d TV is best? (Passive or Active)
2. Which TV is best for around £1000 (47")
3. Is there a TV which is passive and delivers full HD 3D and is compatible with 3dtv play? For around £1000?

Thanks guys, your help is much appreciated!

3DTV Play does not deliver "full HD 3D" aka '1920x1080 per image at 120' Hz to any 3DTV. The best you can do for 3D gaming is Samsung, the only brand that does 1920x1080 per frame native resolution gaming at 120 Hz with 3D Vision. Other brands restrict you to either scaled 720P at full frame rate, or 1080P at 24 fps which is unsuitable for gaming.

I would like to use it for 3d gaming via 3d vision. Also just for general 3d viewing like 3d bluray etc. Thanks

If you go the non-Samsung route, consider iz3d or tridef drivers instead of 3DTV Play as they support SBS at 60hz, which is 1920x540. It looks better than 720p. To me its like adding 4 to 8x AA and helps the detail at distances. If you can find a Samsung that has reviews stating low amounts of crosstalk (in games, not movies) and input lag, id recommend them too. They also support full 1080p frame sequential at 60hz (30hz per eye), which is not bad at all considering i can't see flicker @24hz at all in dark scenes and its very "ignorable" even in lighter scenes.

What Fullofit11 means by "native resolution" checkerboard is that the processor creates every other pixel in a 1080p resolution frame and sends those pixels to the TV to be displayed, according to Roller, the benefit is they are not subsequently scaled, which is the case for 720p in 3D. As a frame of reference to gauge Rollers enthusiasm vs. bullcrap ratio, consider that 3 weeks ago Roller said that CB looks far superior to FULL 1080p(using frame packing), which is obviously untrue.

I agree, roller definitely did overstep his mark with the "native resolution" comment. Very out of character indeed.

Not a typo. Checkerboard mode = 1920x1080 per frame in 3D . Samsung TVs are 1920x1080 displays, hence native resolution

CCheck out Mitsubishi dlp if u want a bigger screen for the same price that has the same checkerboard 1080p and has a better 3d image quality. Zero crosstalk on dlp. All led, lcd and plasma have crosstalk.
Price
the sammy is nice too but more expensive and requires hacking to run checkerboard.

I've never seen a DLP 3D TV and I would like to see one some day, as DLP owners always claims that DLP TVs don't have crosstalk issues. DLP TVs don't exist in Brazil, I really would like to see one Live and check out CB gaming just to feed my curiosity.

One thing I know for sure is that any 3D Plasma is much better than a 3D LED TV when it comes to ghosting issues. I'm not talking about brands, just the technology and Plasma is far superior than LED for 3D gaming/videos. I agree that Samsung LED has to much crosstalk, but Plasma is much better. I've only compared Samsung LED vs Plasma for bluray3D, not games. But I think games should be a different comparision, it depends more on drivers, games and 3D implementation, than the technology itself.
Just Cause and Batman look amazing in my 3DTV, and other games that don't have a very good 3D implementation have lots of crosstalk, it really depends.

Sony was the best LED TV I've seen so far, but I wound't trade it for a Samsung or Panasonic Plasma. LG I didn't like at all, I think they're behind Sony, Panasonic and Samsung. I haven't seen any Sharp Toshiba or Philips 3D TV yet.

Actually only DanielJoy is claiming zero crosstalk.

You would be disappointed. I had a Mits 67 inch for almost two months in Fall 2010. I played BF2, CoD. The image quality was pretty good EXCEPT there was a very obvious 'screen door' effect, like some pixels were missing in a regular diamond pattern. Since native rez, it was crisp, so it was much better than 720P on an LED/plasma. This is why I was skeptical when Nobsi reported how good CB was on his samsung plasma in Dec. 2010, I figured it was fault of CB technology. After seeing CB on Plasma, I knew prob was with DLP tech, not CB.

Totally agree on every point.
I prefer the colors palette on Sony and seems to show tiny bit more detail than Samsung LED. Sony also defaults to PC mode processing unlike Samsung. LG was way behind the rest.
Like Samsung, Panasonic defaults to Video mode in 2D. At the time, I didn't know about Video mode vs PC mode issue so I didn't try to fix the panasonic.
Of course inability of 3D gaming in native rez trumps every other consideration, so only real choice is Samsung.

So, Roller in your experience CB does look better in a Samsung Plasma compared to DLP Mitsubishi TV? That's great news, I thought that CB lookwed better in a DLP cause there's no ghosting and since this is the major issue for 3D these days.

What do you mean by obvious screen door effect in DLP TVs? You say there are some unpleasant lines when playing games in CB mode in a DLP TV. I was curious to understand how this issue looks like in a DLP TV.

I don't remember how bad the ghosting was, but it wasn't zero.

it's like if you draw an imaginary line starting at the top left corner of the screen, it goes down at a 45 degree angle. This line is transparent, excpt every eight pixels you have a black pixel, like the pixel is missing. Draw several of these lines all at 45 degrees so they are parallel to each other, spaced about eigth pixels apart. Draw these lines so they cover the screen. It's like you take a piece of window screen and apply it over the TV screen, and you turn it at 45 degrees. The screen will block some of the pixels in a regular diamond pattern.

Hi coolboy101,

I would recommend the Samsung 50" C7000 which is a 2010 model tv.
Note that 2011 entry level screen from samsung no longer support CB or FS. (get the 2010 model)

Have you considered a projector? Have a look at the Acer5360.

As for Passive-Active the recent Passive LG isn't getting good reviews.

You will need the proper 3D Vision kit with the emmitter (not just 3D Play TV)to use the rollermod with the Samsung.

Hope that helps.
