Today attended a "touch the future" demonstration of 3D tv by panasonic and Nvidia.
As predicted the >50" plasmas were only capable of displaying 720p@120hz(3D).
The Nvidia people on hand (including director of technical marketing Nick Stam) were very knowledgeable and helpful and recognized that although the Nvidia equipiment and hdmi1.4 cable could both handle 1080p@120hz,
none of the Pannys in the offing could handle such a signal. This is a shame since: 1) each display has 2,073,600 pixels, 2)each pixel is cycling at 120hz. But the net result is that only 921,600 are pixels displayed which on such a large display
looks sadly pixelated even with high antialiasing.
Anyway the first large flat panel company that displays 1080p@120hz gets my $4000. In the meantime I'll stick to this excellent $400 acer gd235hz 1080p@120hz, it is OUTSTANDING FOR THE PRICE!
I would love to buy two more for 3DVision surround, but it is pretty clear that some of the most interesting games BC2, Metro2033, and perhaps even Assassin's creed 2 would have to have graphics settings turned down substantially to run on 3 1080p screens with good framerates even with two GTX480s that I hope to buy in the next few weeks.
Also the 48:9 aspect ratio of such a system might be pretty strained given the off-axis performance of these tn panels.
A 30" 2560x1600 120hz panel would be a great alternative, hopefully we will see one soon.
Thanks to Nick Stam for interesting discussion.
The reviewers always ignore or minimize Physx and 3DVision. Individually these are two of the most exciting technologies to come to gaming in a long time. Together they enhance gaming in ways that can only be experienced, not described. This experience cannot be had on game consoles or ATI equipment.
You guys should get 3DVision kiosks in big-box stores (best buy etc) in some demo cycle implementation that is immune to best buy "techs". If people could experience this stuff on the acer24" monitor in a slightly darkened setting these systems will sell themselves!
Anyway thanks again and... CRANK THAT SH#T UP!

I have a 50" 720p plasma TV that does 3D (although with ghosting and checkerboard 3D) and it really helps if You sit 2m away. The pixel size on these big displays are around ~0.7mm so You can see them if You sit close.

Baragon - great meeting you today at the Panasonic event ! Coulda spent another hour talking tech :) Great to see users of our tech so knowledgeable.
To be clear - the first of 3DTV Play from NV will support the standard HDMI 1.4a 3D protocol formats of 1080p24, 720p60 and 720p50 and work with both with active-shutter TV glasses and passive polarized glasses. So while our high-end GPUs may be capable of higher perf as you said, these are formats we'll be using initially to talk to the various new 3D TVs.

That 720p60hz protocol is complete BS!! Why the hell would I spend 4500 (panasonic 65" 1080p) to play my PC games at 720p?!?!?! I was looking forward to getting one of the new 3D tvs but I will not until there is a model that can do 1080p60. Maybe if we are lucky there will be a nice projector that comes out that can do 1080p60hz. Seriously, I can't believe how crap this all is. What about 60hz content like Documentaries, Nature stuff, Concerts, etc. Are they all gonna be 720P in 3D?
This just doesn't seem right. How can a single DVI cable be able to pass 1080p60 but an HDMI 1.4 can't handle it?

yea, most of the 1080p24 demo material that was displayed by panasonic did not have proper pull-down and seemed very staccato. Made me felt as if I had a serious neurologic disorder.
Panasonic and other display manufactures (sony?): GIVE US 1080p@120hz!

That's disappointing but expected. Hopefully CEMs will make some 1080p60 displays at some point. I also saw the Panasonic VT20 with a 3d bluray sample disc. The 1080P content looked great, but the 720P content was a huge step down. Not even the same league. Too bad.

Completely agree, nothing comes close to 3d vision and how it changes the gaming experience and I have been here since the Ping Pong days. :-)

i went to check out these new 3d tv's locally. I was not impressed- and now that we know that they cant even do 1080p ill defiantly pass. These new tv's do not look any better than my old 65"Mitsubishi DLP tv thats been on the market for three or four years. these tv's are a bargain at $1000 price range- and work perfectly with 3d vision- no ghosting at all! If you cant wait for high resolution gaming i would highly recommend this Tv on a PC and 3d Vison.

Right! Thankfully they can just play in 2D! No worries.
I would very much like to buy the big ghostless 65" 3D DLP TV's for a 1000$... but... unfortunately they have never never never sold those in Europe. Just like we don't get the VESA sync cable and the DVI-HDMI cable in Our 3V Vision package. I think a 65" ghostless 3D display must be the tops.

To be clear - the first of 3DTV Play from NV will support the standard HDMI 1.4a 3D protocol formats of 1080p24, 720p60 and 720p50 and work with both with active-shutter TV glasses and passive polarized glasses. So while our high-end GPUs may be capable of higher perf as you said, these are formats we'll be using initially to talk to the various new 3D TVs.

Yeap, first brand to make one 1080p gets my 4 grand too... On the bright side, holding off our purchase might allow time for improvements perhaps

yea, most of the 1080p24 demo material that was displayed by panasonic did not have proper pull-down and seemed very staccato. Made me felt as if I had a serious neurologic disorder.
Panasonic and other display manufactures (sony?): GIVE US 1080p@120hz!
Nick and NVIDIA: keep the good stuff coming!

Agree 100%. I can't understand why nVidia hasn't pushed to get 3d Vision demos into BestBuy at least.

You guys should get 3DVision kiosks in big-box stores (best buy etc) in some demo cycle implementation that is immune to best buy "techs". If people could experience this stuff on the acer24" monitor in a slightly darkened setting these systems will sell themselves![/quote]
