DVI-d to HDMI for 3dtv Play? Will it work?
I just bought a passive vizio 3dtv, that is on the nvidia 3dtv play list, for family 3d viewing. PS3 3d games and blu-rays look great!
I have plans on connecting the kids' pc to it and buying 3dtv play. However, after buying a long hdmi cable and everything, I neglected to pay attention to the fact that my gtx 285 in that pc is pre-hdmi. So, I've been lookin around and there are plenty of DVI-D -> hdmi adapters out there.
What I need to know is if an adapter will allow me to use 3dtv play, or will there be some kind of problem getting the drivers to see the tv through an adapter?

Btw, PS3 3d looks great. I was unsure at first since its completely dwarfed in power compared to my 3d vision pc. But really, I'm quite impressed! Playin through Uncharted 3 and it has very good depth and convergence! It's even adjustable in the menu.

The cable you have should be fine.

You will need to purchase 3DTV Play though to enable gaming to work. Its $39.99 and is available at www.nvidia.com/3dtv.

Yep DVI-D is backward and forward compatible with HDMI but only at Single-Link DVI speeds. Your GTX 285 should actually have included a DVI-D to HDMI adapter that looks something like this.

You can also buy a cable that has SL-DVI-D on one end and HDMI M on the other.

Should be fully compatible with 3DTV Play without any issues, but you will need to either connect the 3D USB emitter to that PC or buy an extra copy of 3DTV Play in order for it to work.

Thanx for the quick reply! Good to know that it'll work. If my 285 came with one, it's been misplaced. I did move into a new house and lots of stuff has happened. I'll just get another one. And yeah, I was planning on buying 3dtv play since my 3d vision pc is across the house. /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Ive if run a dvi/hdmi I lose some funtionality on my 3dtv. The ablility to adjust some 3d settings within the tv which i dont lose if i was to use straight hdmi connection. Nothing major but it does limit my experience somewhat.

I was going to post something about Uncharted 3 as I rented the game for a week. I wanted to see what all the fuss was regarding 3d and ps3, some were suggesting that its not all that great if you were to compair it to using the pc to 3dtv. My conclusion is that its AMAZING. Depth was spot on, great colors, bright, fluid I had no complaints and after reading some posts about it my low expectations were completely shattered.

Uncharted 3 in 3d is a must play. I was blown away and the ease of just poping in a disk and no fiddling. It will go along way in helping get 3d to the masses who are on the fence with this tech. Ill be play alot more 3d via my ps3 after this wonderful gem of a game.

I fully support your opinion. Although there were moments with very low pop-out, for example when reading the diary, the game generally benefited for a lot of depth. If you liked U3 you should definitely play Killzone 3 and the GOW PSP collection, both have really great stereo. The attention to detail in Killzone's hud in regard to s-3d will strike you as the very best in stereoscopic gaming. The only complaint I have with s-3d on the ps3 is the lack of AA and the sub-hd resolution and this does not concern the GOW games, since they are low-poly games and don't need that much processing power.
Just try running U3 in plain 3d mode and in s-3d and you will immediately notice the blurrier textures, the aliasing and the general lack of detail, which is a non-issue in the plain 3d mode. That said, stereoscopy adds much more to gaming on the ps3 than it takes, thus it is a fair trade.

I played the Killzone demo last night. Sure, they lowered the res a bit, but the textures still seemed good to me, and the lighting effects are best ps3 can do. Gonna pick it up tonite along with GT5.

Yes, I also really enjoyed the particle effects in KZ3, which are on par with what physx has to offer on the pc. As for GT5, the stereoscopic effect in great, however you will notice some graphical annoyances, which have been described in all reviews (the worst of which is the smoke pixelization). Nevertheless, GT5 is a great game, but I rather enjoy playing LFS on the pc more ( with a g25 of course).

Well I just found out that gt5 is in 3d too. Feeling a little stupid as ive been waiting almost a month now with my new 3dtv to try a 3d ps3 game and the whole time i had a working 3d title not more than a foot away lol. Once uncharted 3 is done ill return it and then play some gt5. Avatar 3d the other night was just amazing, forgot how much i enjoyed this movie in 3d. Been several years since watching it. The samsung is a smart tv so its hardwired into my home router and pulls directly from the pc hdd. No fuss or muss, no converting , no sofware to deal with. It found the avatar movie in seconds and never had a single issue the whole movie long.

Uncharted 3 is the game that never ends, I keep thinking it will end soon but they just keep throughing more levels at me, Its been a long time playing a game that does not end after five hours. The detail in that game is crazy. Last time i played a ps3 game was killzone2 and Uncharted just dwarfs it in everyway. Ill be playing ALOT more ps3 3d if they keep releasing games like that. I love my 3d vision but sitting back on my sofa, beer in hand and pillow behind my head is really very nice......
