The answer would be "yes" you do need an emiitter due to the fact that the W700 is only HDMI 1.3 compliant.
So it will not work with 3DTV Play, but is officially supported via 3D Vision.
1 or 2, they both basically function the same and either would work with a lightboost monitor if you were to ever get one.
The 3D Vision 2 glasses have slightly larger lenses and are more comfortable to wear.
The emitter is not sold separately.
If you were to find a good used one, then you could use DLP Link glasses if you already own a pair.
Nvidia's emitter is USB driven, you connect it to the PC, preferably a USB2.0 output off of the motherboard.
