I tried posting in the SLI forums but no one has replied. I am seriouslly considering adding a 2nd GTX 295 to my system.
I7 920 2.66
GTX 295
6 Gigs DDR3 1600
My question is will I see much benefit from doing this? Would I be fine staying at 2.66 with no overclock?
Rumors say that the Fermi will be around 600-700 dollars. On top of that I will need a different power supply. That is a lot of cash!
Any advice / opinions are appreciated.
Thanks![/quote]
I am on the same boat and right now I am thinking on going Fermi. Not sure where you get those prices as I have seen $450 lately as well...I will just wait until it is out I guess.
Quad SLI does not seem to be that efficient that is what bothers me.

Yes, you should oc your processor. Your cpu speed has a lot to do with driving the information flow between gpu's in a multi-gpu setup such as yours. ~4GHz is the sweet spot for the i7 & SLI.
No, you should not buy another GTX295 right now unless you have found some obscenely cheap deal. Fermi is actually rumored to be debuting more in the $450 range and will almost certainly beat the pants off any 200-series card AND will be DX11. Adding another 295 right now just costs you a boatload of cash and makes you even less future-proof. Sit tight for a month and see what happens with Fermi and then make a decision.

The only reason I am even considering quad sli is for 3d Vision. 3D Vision has changed me. I do not ever want to run any game in medium settings. I want maximum performance. It's too bad that 3D vision causes such a hit to FPS. Hopefully some new drivers will improve things a bit.

i have quad. It is not worth it- unless you dont have any money issues. Go with sli fermi- ill be upgrading to this set up. 3d vision is still in beta for quad sli- only a couple titles work well.
quad does add speed but not much. I game at 1080p at max settings in all games with 3d vision. with one 295 i had to lower AA from 16xq to 8 or less depending on the game. Typically i see 30-40% of my cpu being used and not more than 40 percent of each gpu being used. Thats a lot of hardware not being utilized. This is in the most intense games to day like crysis or shattered horizon. I think game creators dont design games to utilize the best hardware. I am hoping a simpler sli fermi will use more of my cpu. I blame the drivers and the game creators for this.
you defiantly need to overclock the cpu- performance will be worse with quad at stock cpu clocks compaired to a single 295!!
