Source Engine and 3D Stereo
Anyone else having trouble with Source games like Half Life 2 or Portal?

Vista 64-bit
GeForce 8600 GT
174.76 stereo driver

I've tried starting Half Life 2 with the -32bit extension and it seems to at least detect the game and put it in 3D stereo mode right away - the problem is it's not actually in stereo! Everything looks like it's on a flat plane. Portal does the exact same thing.

Tried UT2004, Max Payne 2, Crysis - all work beautifully.

Anyone have advice?

hello buddy just to ask what set up are you useing ?
my: rig 64bit vista home pre.
8gb ddr2 667mhz ram.
q6700 quad core.
p5w dh deluxe.
2x 1tb sata 2 hard drives.
creative x-fi pro gamer.

screen: optoma hd70 dlp projector.

drivers : 178.24 nvidia geforce driver.
174.76 stereo driver.

ive just started on this stereo 3d im just useing the red/cyan card glasses, its not poping out of the screen but its like looking through a window all the hud is floating in front of the background, and also the gun is also slitly longer in depth then the background, my games are need for speed pro street, crysis, crysis warhead, waiting hopeful for far cry 2 to be done in nvidia stereo 3d, you may not have it turned on in the stereo 3d control pannel if you have see if the game is compaterble with 3d.

Thanks for the reply - I'm running in anaglyph mode also, if that's what you were asking. And yeah - its turned on. When I toggle it stereo on and off, it goes from being flat on my monitor to being flat an inch or so into my monitor. Like i said, I've had a great experience with some other games. I've heard of HL2 working reallly well, but I haven had any luck yet...

I think nvidia drivers are still very sensitive for postprocessing effects.
Turn off color correction and motion blur (display settings in the game) to see if something happens.

I think you might be right....but unfortunately, that doesn't work either; I've turned off or set to 'low' everything I can. Along the same lines, I tried forcing it into earlier versions of DirectX and that also failed. It seems I'm a bit stumped...

Ok, well, now I've downgraded to Vista 32 bit, thinking that was the problem, but it's still acting the same. Has anyone with a GeForce 8000 series gotten any Source games to work?

Also, in HL2 and Portal I noticed the informaton box that appears in the lower right corner when you turn on stereo says "Rating: Good" but the NVidia website and the 3d stereo control panel rate them both as "Excellent." This is getting annoying.

Problem solved!!! I just installed the iZ3D drivers instead of Nvidia ones. Now the convergence settings respond also. With HL2, the HUD is at screen depth, the water surfaces are still the best I've seen to date (especially in full 3D) - it looks like the only thing that isn't absolutely perfect is the depth of the weapon, but I can live with that. Beautiful!
