It has insane rendering requirements at that FOV. And for what purpose. I know people will argue about their superhuman peripheral vision on the internet, but clarity in your peripheral vision is basically only when you're super conscious of trying to resolve things. Otherwise, only our center vision is clear and everything else is varying degrees of "low resolution". Until we have eye tracking (so we know where the human eye is focused) and foveated rendering, it's just pointless. That massive FOV is just going to be blurred out by the human eye. And require massive GPU power to render it.

HL2 gives me motion sickness even without bringing Vr or 3d into the equation so I most likely won't be adopting Oculus and the like

No one would invest this money in hardware.

No one? Why even sell a gtx 980ti then? I do research in 3D Interaction and VR. In my opinion, if they sell VR as a desktop display replacement, they are doing a big mistake. True VR should let you be able to move. However, true locomotion is still difficult with today's technology.

I also had motion sickness with HL2 without VR or 3D, but when I use Oculus Rift (in other games, have not tried it with HL2), I do not have the same trouble. I think HL2 does some things that make motion sickness worse than other games, like making your weapon sway back and forth and having the view bob up and down as you walk. Now that I have read on the web about HL2 motion sickness, I might go back and try HL2 again with some of the suggested options. I have no idea why a gaming company is trying to break into a niche hardware market with a product that's completely over the top with requirements that virtually nobody can afford, that will result in games that will barely run at 30fps. It will just be another poor experience that VR can do without right now.

Played it twice for a total of about 30 minutes. Like all FPS VR games, it's got locomotion issues and kind of makes my head feel like I'm in a free fall. Never felt I was going to get sick, but I knew I was pushing my luck and didn't want to feel cruddy and lethargic by pushing much further.

HL2 on the DK2 is horrible, hands down the worst VR experience I've ever had. The locomotion issues are far worse than any other game (FPS or otherwise) that I've played so far. Using the HL2 VR 1.4 mod with the Razer Hydra fixed a lot of the problems though, and its one of the best FPS experiences I've ever had.

I'll give it a second chance when the Vive is released. That mod + the motion controllers + standing might be a different experience. With none of those, I'm sweating after about 5 or 10 minutes in that game. And sweating is my early radar that things are amiss and I better quit soon if I don't want my day ruined.
