Gaming in 4K 3D Vision - which options?
I know this is a question that has been discussed here for a very long time. Up to this point I wasn't really interested in the matter but I always kept an eye on the discussion. Judging from what has been discussed here the options for playing in 4K 3D Vision are limited and still generally require additional fiddling with EDID etc. I would like to know the following: 1) does anyone have an overview concerning the required display. Is there a display that turned out to be best suited for 3D Vision in 4K? 2) is there some uncertainty involved or can I assume that it will work flawlessly with all 4K and 3D Vision compatible games after the neccessary steps (EDID override) have been applied. 3) are there any downsides (apart from the huge hardware-related demands) to the whole matter? 4) would it be possible for someone to sum up all the neccessary steps that have to be taken with a compatible display (doesn't need to go into detail. Just name the steps that have to be done). Thanks in advance guys!

Honestly I wouldn't even consider it at this point. I thought it was currently mcapped out at 1440p anyway. I don't think there is 3d vision support for 4k. I'm pretty certain it requires work on Nvidia's part and I don't see it happening. I am currently gaming at 1440p in 3dvision and even that is extremely taxing on my hardware, it's a huge difference, I have gone from max detail in all games at 1080p and bare minimum 60fps to having to carefully consider graphics options again. Witcher 3 drops right down to an average of 45 fps. Rise of the Tomb raider is a bit better 50-60 but it has really good SLI scaling Doom is pretty much impossible to play at reasonable setting due to requiring 100fps to resolve eye sync. Also, you are a fighting game nut like me and remember those games pretty much have to run at a locked 60fps. Personally even if possible, I don't think its worth it at this point. I would rather be able to just set my game to max graphics settings and forget. More resolution is nice but if you have to set textures lower whats the point? I'm not sure there is a computer on the planet that could run 4k 3dvision to a reasonable playable framerate. You also play in surround do you not? SLI is pretty much required for me as it is and we all know what headaches that can bring with generally poor support. I'd be interested to know benchmarks for 3dvision at 1440p in SLI with a couple of 1080's

lohan - yes, this has been discussed a number of time before. One of the more recent postings: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/943900/search-information-about-edid-for-3dvision-on-lg-oled-4k-55ef950v-55ef9500-/?offset=3#4907065. The best suited 4K displays are passive, with low ghosting via circular polarization. I currently have LG OLED (55EF9500), which has great black levels when using full-range RGB settings in NV Control Panel. The EDID override has worked with all games I have tried in 3D Vision, as well as TriDef's Ignition. With the passive display EDID mod, note that in-game scaling does not work correctly in a number of games like Dark Souls 3, so the native 3840x2160 display size requires at least 980 Ti for some games (I HAD to use 980 Ti SLI to play Dark Souls 3, but the visuals are superb)...

You are totally right, necro! I am a fighting game aficionado and I am also using 3D Vision Surround for this type of game. But there are some drawbacks for me using 3D Vision Surround that I assume I wouldn't face when playing in 3D 4K instead. First while I like the huge display span of 3D Vision Surround (I am using 3x27") I can't get over the fact that the displays only span horizontally but not vertically. So while I have this huge field of view horizontally the height stays the same compared to single monitor which is not very immersive. I know this is complaining on a high level but I am used to playing immersive games on the HMZ-T3 where size picture-wise definitely is no issue (on the other hand it's 720p only). Another drawback for me is the fact that many games that I play, especially the games that I prefer playing in 3D Vision Surround (those are normally Beat'em Ups) are not compatible with 3D Vision Surround. Just to name a few: Killer Instinct, Street Fighter V, WWE 2K16........So I rarely get to use my Surround Setup which is occupying a lot of space in my flat. And speaking of more immersive games (which I usually play on the HMZ-T3) I can't get over the annoying bezels! And here I am thinking of 4K 3D Vision Surround where all those drawbacks I named above would be nullified. The whole matter would be even more taxing than 3D Vision Surround @1080p but then I am currently planning on a new Nvidia 1080 based rig. Right now I have no issues playing those games in Surround with a single Titan X. I guess 4K 3D Vision should definitely be possible using a 1080.
