Commenting on the special free 3D PlayStation 3 promotion, Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said, “Sony is a clear leader in all aspects of 3D and this great promotion allows us to bring together the technological leadership of Sony’s 3D TVs with stunning 3D stereoscopic gaming. Only Sony can deliver this breadth of 3D entertainment.â€
Right at the bleeding edge 15 years later than the PC lol.
The roots of the Nvidia stereo driver can be traced to the software supplied with the wired ELSA Revelator shutter glasses from 1990s. Nvidia has acquired the technology ans has provided support for various stereoscopic display technologies, including stereoscopic shutter glasses, with their own version driver which only worked with Nvidia graphics cards.

NEW: Revelator now supports TNT, TNT2 & TNT2-Ultra boards of all brands. Get the generic driver at the german ELSA page. You have to fill out the registration form.
* Yes thats how old the "PC" home version of the tech is, note the GPU's supported.....
versions of the revelator idea strech to late 1980's and pro-commercial VR devices.
The idea of Stereoscopic "3d" dates from:

So yes Sony your leading 3d.
.......
Stereoscopic 3d as entertainment predates Radio, Motion Pictures, TV and Aircraft....
You would think Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Sony just invented it.
Remeber next time someone tells you Steroscopic 3d is a new tech....

Didn't xbox invent online play as well with xbox live? Or was it the dreamcast?
If consoles didn't do it, it didn't happen... :)
One plus (not to sony bash to hard they are a easy target!) Is the PS3 BR player should also be BR3d ready with a sony TV. And we may see some fake 2d-3d on the Ps3 for DVD's or web media in time. So it's cheap route for the console being 3d for some games and media vs a PC. Downside is the 3d TV cost as in general the 3d LED TV's are 2-4x the rpice of older 2d models at 1080p.
Where a n3d ready scren for PC is dirt cheap and games can really be 1050p3d or 1080p3d with AA_AF. So right now its cheaper to build a 3d ready media games PC thats 1080p ready than buy a Ps3 and add a sony 3d tv.
That's should change by next year though and the 3d tv's being kinda the same price as the 2d sets are now + the spec's cost.
Of course the Sony PS3 3d is kinda an offshoot of n3d....
Be intresting to see if people can hack n3d glasses and PC screens to work with PS3 though, this will be getting the n3d IR to mimic what the TV IR is doing and get the ps3 to sync it up.
Additionally, Sony will be filming 25 matches at the World Cup this Summer, and will be screening 3D promotional trailers for the games in its own-brand retail stores.
Prices are yet to be announced, however, we expect the KDL-HX803 to be around £1,400 for the 40in version (£1,600 for the 46in). The BD-S470 is about £190 (so the BD-S570 will be approximately £250). And the home cinema systems will be £400-£500.
Sony's 3D glasses will cost £90 each and come with 100 hours battery life. And while two pairs will be bundled with the flagship LX903 TV range, they will need to be bought separately, along with a £33 transmitter, for both the HX803 and HX903 TVs. They do come in child sizes, in pink and blue, though. You know, for the kids. Aaah.
So the sony glasses have same batt life as n3d specs huh? and need a transmitter.
