Future of 3D Vision Support (Official announcement from NVIDIA)
  9 / 42
3D Vision should simply be replaced with the Half-Over-Under (HOU) output mode supported e.g. by LG TVs. Now that nVidia officially admits 3D Vision is unneeded, it’s time to implement a useful 3D mode.

I own a monitor with active 3D and a TV with passive 3D and i watch movies and play games in 3D all the time on both. So if you really want good 3D the end of 3D vision is not the end of 3D.

Don't forget that you can make any game in to a 3D game with Reshade and other software. Here is an old video about Reshade/Depth3D. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5IhubGkGYU

So depressing...although I was worried about the future of 3D anyway when DX11 support starts dropping. All the push for Ray tracing (its here to stay, looks like it will be in new consoles) will actually accelerate this, as all new AAA games will be DX12 and eventually they will just stop supporting DX11 API I worry. of course, this was supposed to be years from now - not like this Nvidia announcement. I will support any way I can, I just worry there are not enough of us - and what unforeseen obstacles might be ahead. I do not care for VR at all, owned it and to me it could not hold a candle to 3D gaming. So this is a real gut punch, as I don't want to go back to 2D gaming. 3D didn't catch on because it has to be seen in person to be believed. I know because I was one who didn't care about it, because I figured it was like 3d movies - sure its cool at times, but I can live without it. Thats what gamers think, its just the same as 3D movies and tv which couldn't be further from the truth. I've never watched a great 2D movie and wished it was in 3D, but I sure do with games! its a completely different experience, where you are actually in the game world controlling the camera - not at the mercy of some director and editor and basically moving photographs. If our shaderhackers opened a booth at this years E3, had a 65" LG E6 OLED and passive glasses and demo'd the following games: Alien isolation Hellblade Abzu Subnautica Kingdom Come Deliverence Witcher 3 Inside [insert your favorite most impressive 3D fixed game here] I bet it would turn heads, there would be IGN articles like "the definitive way to play Subnautica" etc. But people don't know, I try to explain it to some of my friends but they have no interest and don't live close enough where I could show it to them. The technology is so much better now, you don't need the heavy uncomfortable glasses with batteries etc. Very depressing news indeed...

Unfortunately it's not that easy! I am struggling to get any sense into it but it rather seems like we are a very special breed! Special in the way that once we have seen how gorgeous videogames can look/feel there is no way to play it any other way. I would assume that everyone who is interested in videogames feels the same but that is not the case! I have numerous pals who are all very into videogames especially into the kind of videogames where 3D Vision absolutely shines and I have shown them the glory of 3D Vision on different occasions. Weren't they impressed? They were absolutely impressed admitting that these games in 3D Vision are a sight to behold! Did they run into the next store to get a 3D Vision setup for themselves? No absolutely not! And we're speaking here of games they played for themselves at the same time on their PS4/XBox One or in 2D on their PC. For me such a situation would be absolutely unthinkable as I couldn't enjoy a game anymore if I knew there was a way to elevate the experience by what feels like dimensions. To this day I have no real answer as these guys are all enthusiasts but still even witnessing the gloriousness of 3D Vision for themselves didn't turn them (although they admitted that those games are by far more impressive in 3D Vision)!

One of the best games for 3D in my opinion is: Fallout New Vegas. It's strange, but so it is. Mind that i wrote "One of the best" not the best.

I've asked why and they responded with some uncertainty about not liking to wear glasses. I have a feeling that average Americans are getting too comfortable and have become lazy, setting up a 3d game rig is an unsurmountable obstacle for most gamers, and going thru the menu setting up tv for 3d bluray similarly unsurmountable for most. The extra work seems to be the main reason that most pp are averted to this tech. Autostereoscopy and pnp in this case should cure it. I think even VR's (non)popularity is also suffering from the same issue.

There is a reason that McDonald's is omnipresent, a reason that places like Denny's still exist. Most consumer products appeal to the lowest common denominator. Specialty products like 3DV, that cater to the top 10% of the market, almost always fail/have a limited lifespan. Sure, there are exceptions to this rule, where quality beats quantity, but they are few and far between. I was working at Sony Computer Entertainment America (PlayStation) when we launched the 3D initiative. It was a corporate directive that all divisions support Sony Electronics and the 3DTV initiative in any way that made sense. Naturally, the PlayStation was a willing partner that had many overlapping interests. We even launched our own 3DTV (branded "PlayStation.") Less than 10% of the PS3 installed base could even be bothered to try 3D. But, we kept at it and made some of our biggest franchises/IP's 3D-enabled... for awhile. Eventually, however, we were forced to admit defeat. There was no way to market 3D effectively... the only two avenues that worked (at the time) were in-store demonstrations and trailers in the theaters before 3D movies, and that simply wasn't enough to get consumers excited/motivated in the numbers necessary to make it successful. It actually is quite amazing to me that we still get the occasional developer to support 3D/3DV (Frozenbyte and Nixxes come immediately to mind), as there is really no significant financial incentive for them to do so. And I, too, have failed to convert many self-described "hardcore" gamers to S3D... they just don't get it. Heck... I can't even get my own kids to care about it! They will admit to the "wow" factor, then go back to playing in the flatlands... maddening! :) And... make no mistake - VR will not be 3D's saviour. It is subject to the same challenges and the writing is on the wall that VR will never become a profitable consumer business. I hope that I am wrong about that, but I'm pretty confident that I'm not. I guess it's all up to our little community here to try to keep the 3D dream alive until the next inevitable push from the tech corporate world for the "next big thing" that encompasses stereo 3D technology.

@SubjectBucko I assume Vorpx does not work with 3d vison ready hardware and only works with VR. Am I correct?
Yes, as far i understood, there is a legal problem with accessing 3D-Vision Drivers. This will be probably the case for anyone else trying to access Nvdida drivers too. Providing SBS output to a monitor should not be a problem, but the Emitters are fired through Nvidia. I assume there will be legal problems when accessing (hacking) this.
