Hi Everyone,

After reading this entire thread, I am still confused.

Recently I bought a Mitsubishi DLP TV (model 73-738) that came with a couple of 3D glasses (still in the box) via a rebate. I've build a HTPC with a NVidia GT430 video card. My main rig has a NVidia GTX570, which I hope to connect to the Mitsubishi once in a while to play 3D games.

Which software do I need? 3D Vision or 3DTV Play? If I understand this thread correctly, 3DTV Play will play 3D BluRay at 1080p24 checkerboard, but not 1080p60 for gaming (only 720p60)
Correct, except 3DTV Play doesn't do checkerboard at all, it is strictly framepacking up to 720P/60 or 1080P/24. Above all else DO NOT buy 3DTV Play, it has severe disadvantages and no advantage over other solutions for what you are trying to do. And 3DTV Play isn't even cheaper, see below.
I will be able to use the Mitsubishi 3D glasses I have now, or DLP link glasses.
I assume so, but I've tested only Samsung.
On the other hand, with the latest version of 3D Vision I can play game and 3D BluRay at 720p60 only, not 1080p60 because the Mitsubishi DLP is HDMI 1.4 standard.
No. There is no limitation on BluRay 3D playback due to HDMI1.4, BluRay 3D is native 1080P/24 which HDMI1.4 handles easily. So there is no issue regarding BR3D, only 3D games.
Most importantly, 3DTV Play prohibits satidfactory 3D gaming due to nvidia's design blunder of disabling hi quality checkerboard mode even in HDTVs that support CB, like the Mits that you have. 720P looks gross due to the scaling errors,
espcially on a large screen, and worse still with DLP technology. With 3DTV Play, you'll be doomed to 720P gaming hell and there's nothing you can do to save yourself.
And I couldn't use the Mitsubishi 3D glasses, nor DLP link glasses. Only NVidia 3D glasses works with 3D Vision.
No. 3D Vision works with TV Makers glasses. You must plug your computer into the 3D Vision emitter in order to get 3D, if you don't, game will be 2D. If using an HDMI1.4 HDTV with 3D Vision, the emitter amounts to a "proof of purchase", nothing more it doesn't do anything. You will use only the TV Makers glasses and emitter. The only time you use the 3D Vision emitter and glasses is if you have a computer monitor, or if your Mits has a compatible 3D sync out signal that can be connected to the Nvidia emitter.

Consider the following: If you use 3D Vision for gaming, you will need to replace your monitor .inf file with rollermod.inf. Even with this simple fix, you will get a red overlay message whenever you launch a game. To eliminate this message, a 5VDC squarewave must be present at the sync input of the emitter. See "checkerboard hdmi1.4 fix, part 2". If you have a compatible '3D Sync out' port on your Mits that can connect to the nvidia emitter, then you would not need the squarewave generator.
Another consideration is to bypass all this and just get Tridef or iZ3D drivers for the same cost as 3DTV Play. You can get a free trial download, and they both support checkerboard. I've tried both in limited testing, and they seem to be about the same quality as 3D Vision. In this pure software scenario, you don't need anything except their 3D driver, and you use the TV's glasses and emitter. It's kinda like 3DTV Play without grosss image quality.
As to Blu Ray 3D, gaming stereo 3D drivers described above aren't necessary, you need only the basic driver at the nvidia website.

Really, IZ3D and Tridef DDD are not a gaming 3D solution for HDTV's because the lack of performance in games are huge. I know we are doomed to 720p woth frame packing HDMI 1.4 3DTV Play, but at least the performance is about the same from what we get when playing games in 3D with 3D Vision + 120hz display.

I hated Tridef when I used, it lacks performance in games a lot, for example when I tried Mafia 2, GTA IV. Also many games don't work with those solutions, only a few. I had to play in 720p 60hz checkerboard most of games I've tried, cause in 1080p the performance was so lousy that I coudn't get more than 20fps, horrible. It doesn't support SLI very well and the 3D quality is not even close from what you get with 3DTV Play. I think Nvidia should give us checkerbord as an option, but I don't think Tridef or IZ3D are an alternative or better option than 3DTV Play. At least 3DTV Play uses the Nvidia drivers and the game's support is way, way better than crappy Tridef and IZ3D. I haven't tried IZ3D, but I tried Tridef and I hated, very lousy, I woudn't buy it for nothing. I really don't get why you guys are saying so much good things about Tridef, I haven't liked it at all and tried it for 30 days trial and I hated. What good is to play at 1920x1080 60hz if most games you get lousy performance and must play at 720 60hz instead???

That's the big diference, 3DTV Play will always have better performance in games cause it uses Nvidia drivers and Tridef and IZ3D weren't developed with SLI, Fermi's, Physx in mind, so it has it's own drivers that were made for all kinds of hardware and not a specific hardware like Nvidia 3DTV Play, so it will always lack performance in games.

Come on guys, playing Mafia 2 in 1920x1080 60hz CB with Tridef with this PC: QX9650 at 3.8ghz + 2 GTX 480 in SLI and get 15 to 20fps. Is this a joke??? I had to play in 720p 60hz checkerboard and it looked horrible. That's why I stick with 3DTV Play, cause it has it's bugs and limitations, but it's better than those lousy cheap solutions you guys are saying good things about it. You just didn't mention the performance hit in games using them.

You obviously have some performance issue unrelated to TriDef, I get as good or better performance vs 3D Vision (i'm using both now so I can switch back and forth). Where you are getting 20 fps, I'm getting 70 fps with my single gtx480. And image quality is superb because of checkerboard. Sounds to me that when you were using TriDef, you had Stereo 3D enabled in the nvidia control panel. I have done this and I get extremely bad results that you are reporting. Are you certain that Nvidia stereo 3D was disabled in CP when you were using TriDef?

I didn't know that Roller, thank you for pointing that out, I guess I had 3D enabled for 3D vision in the NCP. Anyway I've just read a message that Andrew product manager for 3D Vision is going to give us checkerboard. Those news are awesome, I really hope he's serious about that. Who cares about IZ3D or Tridef if we will get CB with 3D Vision. I'm pretty sure 3D Vision CB will be better than the competition, cause it uses Nvidia drivers.
Maybe I had performance hit due to having 3D enabled for 3D Vision, but you must agree that Tridef is not compatible with a lot of games, only those they listed and it's not made for GFX cards, SLI, Physx and Tesselation, so it will never be as good as Nvidia solutions.

Let's cross our fingers dude and hope CB will be available in the next 3D vision drivers release.

yes indeed franc. TriDef performance is a non-issue the second we get checkerboard (and page flip) in 3DTV Play and 3D Vision HDMI 1.4. No more forcing users to jump through flaming hoops backwards to get the hi quality gaming we demand.
Andrew has been considering this improvement for three weeks now, so he has had time to discuss this with his engineers. Seems to me that if there is a problem with implementing CB, he would not be asking us if we want it.

Let's hope for the best Roller.

I didn't understand what you meant with 3DTV Play and 3D Vision HDMI 1.4??? 3DTV Play is for TV's and 3D Vision for PC's. So, there's no HDMI 1.4 for 3D Vision, just 3DTV Play that uses HDMI 1.4.
I mean with 3D Vision you use a 120hz display that has a DVI-DL and it uses frame sequential format to enable 3D.
3DTV Play you need a 3DTV that has HDMI 1.4 and uses frame packing format to enable 3D.
You sound like there's a way of using 3D Vision and it's own glasses and IR receiver with a 3DTV, but I probally misunderstood you. Please, explain that to me.

Cheers...

I've had my 3D Vision kit since May 2010, believing Nvidia when they said that 3D Vision would not work with my 55" Samsung HDMI1.4 LED 3DTV. I even had customer service tell me that over the phone. In November 2010 I found that Samsung 3DTVs work under 3DV.

5 months, no change.

P.S. to enable checkerboard 3D processing in Samsung TVs, open the Menu->Input->Edit Name and change the source's name (usually HDMI1/DVI) to PC or DVI PC. The TV will go to (nearly) zero-lag mode and disable some picture enhancements (very similar to Game Mode). To go back to normal change the name to any other option from the list, such as Game or Camcorder, anything that doesn't include PC in its name.

Without changing the source's name to PC, only Side-by-side and Top-bottom processing options are available.

Guys

Can anyone post a link to the thread where Andrew (from Nvidia) stated that 3DTV play would be ammended to support 1080p checkerboard (and other modes). I know it exists somewhere on this forum, but I can't find it.

I keep checking in from time to time to see if this has been delivered and being disappointed.

CB/SBS modes violate Nvidia's 'no user intervention' policy, that's why it hasn't been implemented. The only reason 3D Vision has CB mode is because in 2009 when 3D Vision was designed, CB mode was the no user intervention mode on DLP TVs. Had 3DV been released in 2010, we would really be screwed, no way to do native rez 3D gaming on full sized displays, we'd be stuck with tiny little monitors.

Thing is, 3D Vision CB mode is available on all 3DTVs that support CB modes, so the fact that 3DTV Play doesn't support CB is unimportant. Gamers need SBS mode, not a second implementation of CB.

Hi,

Can you give us a estimation of when SBS going to be implemented?

If its going to be months from now, i'd rather just pick up Tridef and start moving in that direction. Given that 3DTV Play is for TV,s which are generally large screens, you'd think getting all the resolution you can out of that would be a priority since they must stretch 720p across such a large area. I also noticed i cant record in 3D using Fraps with frame-packing. I need to record some 3D footage asap, which i can do with SBS.

46" Samsung ES7500 3DTV (checkerboard, high FOV as desktop monitor, highly recommend!) - Metro 2033 3D PNG screens - Metro LL filter realism mod - Flugan's Deus Ex:HR Depth changers - Nvidia tech support online form - Nvidia support: 1-800-797-6530

My guess is its 3-4 months away.

The FRAPs issue with frame packing bug would be new to me. What happens? Is there an error message?
