Hey Gang,
I haven't been on the forums for awhile and it's great to see all the latest activity from the usual suspects!
Since winter is approaching I have decided to finally upgrade my dated hardware and put it to pasture soon. My plans however, is to get away from the flat screens and go with a projector. I understand that ghosting is less prevalent and the only issue I am wondering is fidelity in terms of graphics. I am quite happy with what I game in (1920x1080) and I really appreciate the toyification effect mostly. I do have a good space for a projector and I'd really love to hear your viewpoints for those that are familiar and experience with a projector.
Ok, after that preamble, can you good folk provide your opinions or thoughts on a good 3D projector and perhaps a solid 3D Vision video card that matches my gaming style. I am going to build my own PC and know where I want to go with that.
I have only posted in this forum because I highly value your guys opinions only!
Cheers,
Stryker

I have an Asus VG278H monitor, and a BenQ W1070 projector. I'd definitely recommend a projector, the resolution downgrade isn't a significant issue for most games, and the size more than makes up for it.
As for the card, what do you want to play? SLI 970s are at a good price/performance point, if on the high end.

Cheers dude for your input. I have been looking at the BENQ W1070 as a potential. Happens to be the same model projector you have. Are you happy with it? If needed, I may spend a little more.....hmmmm, choices....lol

I think the 970 is what I'll go with, this one appears to be good. I already have an existing ASUS and have been quite happy with it.

Playing on a projector at 720p doesn't look that bad at all compared to 1080. I have the Acer H5360BD and its really good. I still use a monitor for most things and use the projector mostly for watching films, but for a while after I purchased it I used it as my primary screen for desktop and gaming use.
Its bright enough to project straight onto my wall and gives a decent image at 100" without any pixelation.

I'd recommend two cards if you can afford it, though one will give you solid performance in many titles. I'd definitely recommend the W1070. I don't have much to compare against, but it looks great to me.

I run an older H5360, no BD version projector, and it's fabulous. No ghosting whatsoever, 10' diagonal screen.
In terms of resolution, this 120Hz version gives you twice as many pixels per 60Hz frame, which is roughly on par with 1080p in 2D at 60Hz. (1280*720*2 ~ 1920*1080) In terms of use, I never notice pixels when running in 3D. I can just barely see the pixels in 2D.
I think the H5360BD is probably equally as good, because it uses frame-packing if I remember correctly. That still gives you 2x pixels for a given 60Hz frame. You use the DLP glasses, not 3D Vision glasses for that setup.
Other aspects of image fidelity are not as good with projectors. Brightness is not nearly as good, even though I personally have no problem with it, other people complain it is too dark. You can help that a fair amount with better screens. But then, the brighter the screen, the more washed out blacks get. Contrast is probably their biggest weakness.
Also color fidelity is not particularly good with projectors, the color gamut tends to be smallish.
In general for gaming I don't care about those things, but you might care.
One odd, but big, advantage to projectors currently is that we are limited to 720p. That means far fewer pixels, which means waaay less load on the GPU. I can typically run everything maxed out with 580 SLI. I'm presently on 760 SLI, for the few (recent) games that pushed me past that spot. A single 970 is roughly comparable to my 760 SLI, and would be a good start. If you find it's not quite enough, going SLI will do it.
Just my opinion, but people going 4K and Rog Swift have it exactly backwards. In my judgment, if you can't see the pixels, then you have enough resolution. Just like a current 1080p monitor- do you ever see the screen door effect, or the pixels, or jaggies? (I harp on this, but no believes me. It's all about pixel-arc-seconds of visual acuity, and nothing else matters. This is why DK2 is relatively feeble at present. pixel-arc-seconds are pretty bad, far worse than a projector.)

Thanks bo3b for your comprehensive reply. I do have an open mind since things you mentioned are subjective. The place where I'll purchase will allow for a return if I am not happy. I think I'll go with the BenQ W1070, the same one that Pirateguybrush has. I'll work with this with my existing set up and build my new PC from there. A couple of 970's is what I am thinking. The trade offs you mention versus a flat screen may well be worth it. Good point about the screen since this is something to also consider.

One on the biggest factors to consider is your placement of the projector in relationship to the wall. If the room is small, you'll need a short throw projector.
MHL is being integrated into a lot of the new projectors being released. In fact the HT1075 is the replacement/upgraded version for the BenQ W1070 .
There are also some projectors offering interpolation on their lower end models. Interpolation has come a long way and is so much better than it was at inception. I used to be a hater and love it now. (of course you never use interpolation when gaming though)

I have a w1070 projecting onto a wall at around 100-110' I do indeed notice the pixels on straight lines if I don't use high level AA. The shitty thing is that I can't even downsample because then it's above 720p therefore won't work in 3D.
Then again I sit like 2 meters away from the wall so I guess if you sit farther away then you won't notice it as much. But sitting so close makes you nearly completely immersed in the game as nearly my entire field of view is in the game (especially since the dlp glasses block a lot of the peripheral vision) so 3D looks glorious.
When I don't play in 3D, movies look amazing with it in 1080p mode running along with my frame interpolation software.

edit: just noticed D-Man mentioning the frame interpolation software that I was referring to. We should start a club. HFR-MR (high frame rate master race).

Great feedback folks!
Well, I took the plunge and literally just picked up the BENQ W1070 a couple of hours ago. I will be setting it up in the next few days and I'll have time over the weekend to determine the results.
All this feedback has me realize that the enjoyment of a projector for 3D gaming is subjective. One of the drawbacks with my current setup is the ghosting that I get in some games. The TV I have does have adjustments that help to either eliminate or reduce. I hope the results of the projector converts me a proponent of projector technology.

Probably a bit late, but I have a Panasonic PTAT6000E (In USA it's called PTAE8000U) projector and I'm really impressed with it.
It's so much brighter than my Panasonic 3D plasma. Gaming on a 3d Projector really is a level up from a TV or monitor.
I also recommend looking at the screen goo alternatives for painting a wall rather than having a screen.
I have used this method mixing standard paint with this high reflective stuff and it was better than my screen when I A/B'd it.

Playing Alien isolation with 7.1 on a 127" 'screen' in 3D felt like I had been transported to 10 years in the future!
Truly amazing, especially in 7.1 on the 360 pad!
All I need now is a DBOX motion system (have you seen the prices?!? Ouch!!!) and I'll be in gaming/filming nirvana, I have the chair for it but those actuators cost a fortune!
Anyway enjoy the projector, I know you will!

The Benq1070 is a good choice. I use the short throw version (1080ST) on a 100" screen.
There is surely plenty of brightness <= ~100", even more the smaller screen size you go. I have my setup in a light controlled room so did not have to fuss with fancy high gain screens.
One thing to consider is that the 1070/1080ST is "native" 1080P so if your concerned about picture scaling degrading your image quality be sure to find/change the default options in the projector setup menu and feed it a 1280x720 (720P) windows desktop while figuring where you want to place/mount the projector.
Toss in some 5.1 sound and you can have a really immersive gaming experience.
I'm sure you'll have hours of fun with your new projector!

I have set the projector up along with a fairly large screen and I am hooked without a doubt. The benefits of the projector are significant over the flat screen Samsung I have. The flexibility and the 3D effect are a step up no doubt. First thing I noticed was brightness and the elimination of the ghosting effect. It's not 100%, but pretty dam close.
I now understand bo3b's post more clearly. The fidelity and resolution factor I was concerned about is completely eliminated now. The overall price for everything outweighs current flat screens and has all the additional flexibility.
I am going to build a custom track system for the ceiling which will allow me to move the projector forwards and backwards. The mount will also have vertical adjusting between 12-33 inches.
Thanks for everyone's input. As I mentioned in my original posts, the feedback in this forum is terrific. Now to start planning my new PC build with a couple of 970's
