Facebook said it would build on Oculus' technology, particularly its virtual reality headset aimed at gamers, seeking to develop it for other areas such as communications, education, and entertainment.
Is this a good thing for 3d Gamers?

Depends, oculus was already primarily focus in game. Facebook seems to be more interested in communications.
In my opinion if its being designed for "everyone". It kind of homogenizes the brand. Like you want stunning graphics/while still running at required fps for rift is meant for but since its being branded for "everyone". Can scratch off the stunning graphics, games will be built so everyone can play them.
Like I think it could be great for the "console gamer". People who don't care about graphics and just want to plug and play.
I just don't think it would be great for us.
Guess time will tell.

I just think everyone who ordered a Dev Kit 1 was doing so to support a company that needed some help.
There is just something wrong about a lot of people funding the damn thing on Kickstarter & then years later everybody gets rich except them.
Am I a little jealous I didn't create a VR prototype in my garage??? Sure.
What's going to bother me is when I buy the final product I just know it wont let me play unless I have a Facebook Account.

As much as I dislike the direction that Rift is going [mass-market].
I doubt it would go so far as to alienate gamers.

That's not what Kickstarter is, is it? It's not buying a share in a future company. Nor is buying a development kit. But don't all these steps matter? A guy in his garage can't go from "hey VR would be cool" to Facebook buying his idea for millions of dollars. All these intermediate steps have mattered immensely. This is just the next logical step to success I think.

I agree this would be terrible, but it's baseless speculation. I don't think this will happen.

You make some great points. I am just bothered that a social media company bought this & not a game publisher or something.
But I want what everyone on here wants. Excellent 3d gaming whether it is VR or with 3d Vision.

I am curious if this will effect people who were planning on modding/adding support/making renderers. I think that kind of stuff may make a huge drop. TBH, I wouldn't want to do that stuff for a facebook company unless I was being guaranteed to be paid good money. Hell, some people don't think money is enough.
Notch just canceled minecraft for oculus rift.

Wait... what? FAISbuci bought Occulus? This idea is very smelly....and for some reason I don't like it at all... Facebook should stick to "likes" and "share" buttons not VR...just my 2 cents...
Like somebody said above...I am shocked that it was bought by a "social media" company rather then a gaming/hardware company.....
If we (the gamers) will benefit....I don't really think so...Probably it will end up to be VR on mobile/tablet/web browser etc...and instead of going the "proper" and real way it will try to mainstream it so everyone can buy one since it's created by Facebook (more or less). I bet they will implement a "Like" button on the headset ^_^ Which might be ok...as long as they don't implement the "Share my VR to my whole friends" list button we are OK;)) I defo wouldn't want that:))

Reading comments around the internet, I see a lot of negativity based on guilt by association ("I don't like Facebook, so now I don't like Oculus") and pure speculation ("this means banner ads in VR games"). Notch's decision just seems emotional, reactionary.
Time will tell how things play out from here. At this point, I don't think this will mean much for core gamers, except that maybe the technology will get better quicker thanks to all the cash. On the other hand, it will probably accelerate non-game applications of VR. That's fine, because it's not like they have to choose between one or the other. They're making hardware which can be used for both. Both applications have the same hardware requirements.
As DanoC1982 said, this is going to help them break into the mainstream and be taken seriously beyond just the tech world. It will elevate Oculus and VR as a whole. They can afford to lose Notch.

Equity crowdfunding is currently illegal in the US at the federal level. With the recent passing of the JOBS Act, there is a pathway to legalization, but that portion is scheduled to be finalized at the end of 2014.

Dammit. And it sounds like Facebook is looking to utilize this for more social communications connectivity crap. I was hyped for VR because of it's potential to be the exact opposite of that, the power to shut us off from everything on Earth and enter a different world. I guess there's no reason it can't still have such potential, but Facebook probably isn't going to help with that.
The way things have been going lately it's looking more like VR is going to end up being presented as this generation's Kinect, rather than this generation's HDTV as it should.
