As a 3d vision and Oculus Rift fan, I could agree 60% that first discovering 3d gaming is what makes it so impactful. The fantastic headtracking and huge FOV adds a lot to the immersion and the feeling of being there. It can really trick your brain sometimes into thinking that you're somewhere else. we have 3 monitor setups and 100 inch projector screens (my case), but it's not the same that a screen that tracks you all the time, it's far more immersive, that's why horror games are so powerful in VR, you cannot detach from the experience. I've played Dead Space with my gf in my 100 inch screen and she didn't care much (she's a huge horror fan), but she couldn't stand Dreadhalls for more than 10 minutes, and she almost threw the DK1 away when the girl **spoiler**. Still I think VR doesn't have much sense out of first person experiences, so I'll keep using 3DV for these games. Yesterday I was playing Batman Arkham Origins with 3d vision and like all Batman games, it's so amazing in 3d. Then I thought it would be great to have a 3d Vision Viewer for OR, where you could watch .jps images and vids in the headset. With that we could promote 3d vision among OR users, and there are tons of screenshots of almost every compatible 3DV games out there in 3dvisionlive, 3dsolutiongaming and the helix site. Now that we're losing talent in the 3DV scene, it would be a great way to get people's interest back to 3DV now that they have discovered how great 3d gaming is. Sadly I know nothing about how to create such an app.

Finally got Radial G working on the DK2 and it's pretty good. Loaded up Radial G in 3D Vision (really good) so I could compare the two. I have to say, I actually prefer the DK2 version. It's just so much bigger. I suppose if I had a big projector I might feel differently, but it's the one DK2 demo that's impressed me. Actually loaded up Radial G in 3D Vision because I was trying to talk myself into selling the DK2. This thing really is a PITA (Developer kit... yeah, I know). But still, it's a massive pain at the moment. And for all those drones who would sheepishly say they refused to play in 3D because they refused to wear glasses? This VR is 100 hundred times worse. The glasses never bothered me. The stupid box strapped to my face with three wires running out of it does. VR will bomb massively unless they get this wireless and reduce the weight to nothing. I don't care how awesome it otherwise is. It'll forever remain a medical/industrial/learning tool unless this is a MAJOR priority with the consumer version. Lighting up all those pixels smashes it over your head. But something like the Tuscany demo or Radial G is actually acceptable. You can still see them, but it doesn't destroy the experience. Developers need to design around this. You don't want bright flashes on the screen.

Heh! I see the DK2 going for $950 on eBay. I can understand the temptation to sell and wait. I sold my DK1 since I found it unusable, for $500 two weeks ago. Used that to order DK2. If you get a chance to play something like Half-Life2 or Aaaa for the Awesome, I'll be curious if you find them actually playable. I tried very hard to play with an open-mind on DK1, and just could not. I'm hopeful that the better resolution and lower FOV will make it viable. The problem with HL2 and AAAAAhhh is that they're made with DK1's SDK. I have enough issues getting DK2 games working (if they require extended mode and don't support direct view). I shudder to think how hard it is to get the older games working. And they won't have any head tracking. Which, honestly, means I'm not interested in them unless they get updated. Something like HL2 would make me nauseous without it and I don't want to train myself for a useless skill (since DK2 does away with those nasty issues).

OK, good to know. I naively assumed they'd already be modded to support DK2 as well (not paying much attention). The head tracking worked in HL2 and TeamFortress, but from the mouse look approach, not native. It worked pretty well.

As a hardcore 3d vision user who owns a Rift DK2, let me tell you - 3d vision isn't comparable to the DK2. From 3d games being played on a monitor, to the same game being played in 3d, to the same game being played in VR... each time there's a similar jump. Although honestly, though all the thousands of hours I've spent with my 3d vision 2 glasses and lightboost enabled monitor... I don't see myself being interested in them anymore, at least not outside of movies. VR is a different beast entirely. You don't understand immersion until you try it. I have a 27 inch 3dv2 monitor, a W1070 projector, and again I'll say - there's just no comparison. Don't use a rift unless you buy one, because you'll be a lot less interested in playing without one afterwards.

As a DK1 user (for a couple months), the initial novelty is great but wears off after a short time. You won't want to play an RTS on the rift, or a point and click adventure, or anything third person, or even most first person games - as they're designed to frequently move your head around, either in cutscenes, or just during gameplay when climbing ladders, opening doors, etc (and this becomes uncomfortable and uncentres your view, as your vision is moving without you moving your head). Don't get me wrong, the rift is extremely cool, and great with the right type of games. But it's not a universally applicable device, and it will supplement screens - not replace them.

Just ordered my DK2, ETA is September. I take it this will work well in conjunction with SLI?

And it's true, SLI adds latency on VR, so it doesn't work at all at this moment. Also since DK2 runs at 75hz, it needs to have a steady 75fps minimum for low persistence to work, so it really needs a good rig.

Live for Speed is going to be the first racing sim available. The guy behind it is hoping he can have a test release either Monday or Tuesday. iRacing seems like it'll be next (although could be a number of weeks away). Assetto Corsa I'm not expecting before September (and even that might be optimistic.) Excited for Live for Speed. It's not at the top of my preferred list, but it'll show what DK2 is capable of. Many thought Live for Speed was the best DK1 racing sim graphically.

@Paul33993 Nice to hear about Live for Speed, it seems that I'll be able to use my new G27 soon after all :) And yeah, I agree that once Project CARS arrives it will be the de facto racing simulator for VR, but it launches in November, so it won't be anytime soon.
