What is wrong with Nvidia these days?

My apologies if any of you have flicker issues and you feel like we are ignoring you.

If anyone of you are interested in coming to Santa Clara to do an onsite debug with our engineers, I am happy to set that up, just let me know.
I would come live in you alls complex over there if I could work and test and troubleshoot all day, lol.

Coming for just a visit, however, can't happen cause I got this job and all that is cutting into my gaming time and if I left I would miss work and then lose my job and then you would be stuck with me. If you threw me out you would still have to deal with my hanging out outside of the building panhandling. lol

Andrew, i am wondering if you are making any headway on the WoW fix. I remember reading you saying that it was gonna be put on the top of the list of things to fix, that was over 2 months ago and yet no word has been mentioned since. /confused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

In my experience flickering was easily sollved.. Play in a dark room, and turn off any other monitors.

I reckon Andrew's invite is giving you a hint.. In 9 times out of 10, it's enviromental.

Mine will flicker everytime my 2nd monitor is turned on, i turn it off and no flicker plus i do run nv performance tools and evga percision all the time (cause i have too) and no real ill effects other than a bluescreen now and then. Its nice that we can still pause in rant to help one another this way, very bonding, good show everyone.

Wow. This is pretty discouraging to see, after almost TEN YEARS later!

You see, I am probably what most of you would consider a "veteran" of stereo gaming. I have been been playing games in 3d since way back in nv's TNT days. (before geforce was even around!) I got my first pair of shutter glasses back in early 2002, big, ugly, geeky looking glasses. i think they were called "elsa revelators" or something similar.

I will never forget the first time I turned my glasses on and saw 3d popping out of my monitor, I was absolutely blown away! I spent the next seveal years happily gaming in 3d, and refused to play any games without my glasses. If the game didn't work in stereo, I just wouldn't play it..

Over the years I upgraded hardware, went thru various nvidia cards, and even purchased a newer set of glasses. Back then, nvidia didn't even make glasses of their own. They only produced software (drivers) that worked in conjunction with their graphics card, and whatever type of glasses you had.

In time, I too ran across my fair share of technical issues as well. I have experienced the dreaded "flickering" that I am saddened to see is still present. This was YEARS ago. Probably before many of you even knew of stereo gaming. Granted, nvidia didn't have a product of it's own, only "use at your own risk" drivers. There was no real support from nvidia back then. If you had issues, you were on your own to figure them out. Fun.

This was understandable back then, since NV were nice enough to make free software that we could use if we had the proper hardware. Support was limited at best. No complant there. But nowadays, they have their own 3d product, and are obviously STILL IGNORING problems that they were damn-well aware of beforehand. They even completely DROPPED support for xp (even when more people were still using it than Vista) and chose to support Vista and 7 only. And still can't get it right! I read someone above saying that this is 'fairly new still', it's not. Nvidia has been involved in this for way too long now for people to still have issues with their freaking glasses flickering. It's unacceptable.

I also see people are still complaining about the GHOSTING. (Although this problem is inherent with the hardware itself, not a fault of the product's) I see many are blaming it on the given state of technology with LCD's. Fun fact: Did you know that we used to use these same 3d systems on our big old 80 pound CRT monitors? It's true, I still use one today actually. 1024x768 @ 120HZ :) I can tell you for a fact that the ghosting is just as just as relevant on CRT monitors as it is on LCDs. Its just the way it is, but's it's a huge turn-off for a lot of people.

I suppose my reason for posting here is to say I'm quite disappointed to see these same limiting issues from years ago, especially when NV is now selling and alledgedly supporting it's own product. One would assume that support would be better from what it was all those years ago, but apparently not. Still the same problems being ignored.

I had been looking at getting a 3d vision set for PC gaming, but now that I've skimmed across some of these postings, I think I will wait perhaps. I just don't see the point in upgrading my computer hardware, OS, monitor, and having to buy 200 dollar glasses just to experience the same issues that I can right now with my old glasses, and windows xp.

PS - If any of you poor souls out there are experiencing the flicker issue, pm me. I have more experience that I would like in troubleshooting these freakin' glasses. I may be able to provide some assistance. Cheers.

"I know that if I upgrade to a GTX480 I'm convinced the flicking will cease. But I've just forked out £400 for a 295 and now I'm suppose to pay another £400 for a 480 just to stop a damn flickering bug?"

I just re-read this post, and I wouldn't get your hopes up my friend. The flickering is an OLD, OLD issue as I posted above. The solution lies more in making adjustments to how your computer is set up now. Adding newer, more expensive hardware will NOT fix the problem, I promise you. I've been thru this crap too many times.

For what it's worth, I've been playing in stereo for over 8 years now. Not much has changed.

I am getting the flickering to. I totally noticed it when I installed the Evaga Precision Tuner (I have tried to run it, then close, the fans stay on and the program shows it not running in the processes, this was recommended by someone in another post. This seems to alleviate some of the flickering but not all). It also happens when I run Rivatuner. So I have no problem uninstalling these programs if I can have Nvidia3D run stable but I still need to control my two 8800Gt fans. Is there a program that works with Nvidia3D that will let me do this.

P>S. I don't have ntune installed because it doesn't let me overclock past 2.7.

I too have had the 'dreaded flickering'... And I also found the issue was the fault of the EVGA precision software running.
Unfortunately I think too many companies don't focus on the little things or the "little" people. They have their own priorities and agendas which are usually, dare I say, stupid. Not that I am completely referring to NVidia, but I'm sure they've been working hard on the fermi cards and not focusing too much of their attention on their current customers. All in all, I think the new fermi cards are underwhelming and overpriced. I don't have any real problems with the drivers, though, but I've read enough complaints to give me a headache. I do remember the bug in the drivers that caused hitching in Champions Online which took them forever to fix and ended up causing me to cancel my subscription.
I agree with you as far as what you are saying (mostly), but the 480 is underwhelming? http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/..._GTX_480_Fermi/

One 480 is as fast as the gtx 295 in dx9 and dx10 content (giving the 5970 a run in some instances) and trounces even the 5970 in dx11 specific content such as tessellation (which is where we will need the performance most). It looks exactly on target performance-wise. This isn't even if you take CUDA into account which is vastly more efficient on the fermi and ATi cards cannot even use that feature.

I do probably more than my share of criticizing nV, but the 480 is no slouch. Considering it is brand new architecture and the drivers are in beta and certainly not optimized, I only expect the benches to go up significantly.

The 480 is a beast and has some technically very interesting architecture to boot (much like the cell in the ps3 was interesting)... I am excited about getting my hands on it.

I can categorically say now, this is not enviromental flickering. The flickering COMPLETELY stops when I turn off multi GPU on my 295.
The problem is performance takes a huge hit.

Here is a link to the exact problem I'm having....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJcZRAbECR4

That is not enviromental flicking my friends, that is the glasses fallout out of synchronization.

Unless you know something I don't?

Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your offer. Unfortunately I'm based in the UK so that's probibly out of the question. Believe me I'd be the first to help everyone out if I could to help cure this issue.

If you'd like any info whatsoever I can e-mail you, but I've already gone through this process with Nvidia support and not heard anything back, other than they are aware of the issue and are evaluating.

Just to repeat here in a link to my problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJcZRAbECR4

I'm sure you'll agree that this isn't enviromental flickering and I can stop this from happening if I disable multi-GPU but this costs too much performance., and this flickering happens in every single game people regard as fantastic in 3D vision.

Kind Regards
Dave

Hmm, lets start from the beginning and hopefully something helps.

1) Are you overclocked?
2) Do you have riva tuner, everest or any other software that polls the hardware for information?
3) Did you try setting environment type in setup to the center setting (room with other IR devices)?
4) How is your heat? Northbridge heat? GPU heat?
5) Does it happen in every game?
6) Have you tried a clean install and tested before installing anything but drivers and a game to test?
7) Have you tried disabling your network ports or unnecessary hard drives?
8) Do you have any other devices in any PCI slots, and if so have you tried removing them?
9) Have you tried a different PCI-E slot if you have one?
10) Does your bios have a toggle for 8xPCIE or 16xPCIE, if so have you tried toggling it?
11)Have you tried lowering the clock a bit on your GPUs to see if it has any impact?

That's all I can think of, but there is probably more that might have an impact. Good luck and hopefully something helps.

Alot of the processes there I have done such as clean install and tried various drivers. To be fair I haven't moved the gpu to another slot. I will do some testing and report back as you never know, you may have something in that list.

Thx and speak soon

I'm thinking that whatever causes microstuttering also causes the flickering in some cases. So a different motherboard might be the answer ultimately. I think we need to compile some hardware information from users that have and haven't had flickering and see if we can't come up with an idea of which boards don't have any issues. Personally, I had stuttering when I had evga precision installed, but it has gone away now since I got rid of it (I still get a flicker every so often, but very rarely, maybe once an hour when graphics get complex). I have an evga x58 ftw.
