Huh? Sorry, but that confused me even more. The underlined sections below are my understanding, could you please point out specifically what is incorrect:
3D Vision is an optional program supplied with Nividia drivers. It allows compatible games to be played in 3D on 3D Vision approved monitors such as ASUS VG248. There is a proprietary handshake which ensured that only the approved monitors can be used.
Nividia released a paid extension of 3D Vision with the same game compatibility called 3DTV play, it allows you to choose a standard format to output in, such as Side-By-Side, or Checkerboard, so standard 3D displays can be used. But as a "penalty" for not using a 3D Vision approved display, you have to pay $40 and are still limited to 720P.
The reason people use EDID mods is to use a standard monitor with 3D Vision (not 3DTV Play) above 1080P, so 3D vision thinks the monitor is compatible, this method avoids 3DTV Play completely. There is no reason to use an EDID mod with 3DTV Play because it is compatible with all standard 3D displays.
However, if you have an approved 3D Vision display with a built in emitter (or bought a kit with an emitter separately), you automatically have access to 3DTV Play for free. Downloading the activation utility is not necessary.

3dTV Play doesn't do side by side or checkerboard. It uses framepacking.
3DTV Play is limited to 720p 60hz or 1080p 24hz due to the bandwidth limitation of HDMI 1.4.
Nvidia havent updated 3dtv play for HDMI 2.0 which would allow higher resolutions.
Nvidia have also got 4k 60hz working over Hdmi 1.4 using 4:2:0 colour chroma (but not in SLI) but won't do the same for 3D for some reason.

3D Vision supports Checkerboard. but only on older Mitsubishi DLP 3D HDTVs.
3DTV Play supports Checkerboard, but only on HDMI 1.4 compliant 3D HDTVs that accept the format, such as some of the Samsung models.
3DTV Play "does not" officially output line interleaved, although Optimised for Nvidia GeForce does.

It is not your PC it is a NVidia problem
I also have a key and cant activate I am using a 120 day trial until it is fixed
Aloha :-)
I did have a working win-7 installation that I could watch 3d iso's using powerdvd and 3d-play from. Did work most times, but the problem was not nvidia...
Now, I have upgraded to win-10 - the os works wonderfull too, but my 3d-play has disappeared !
When I go to the Nvidia control-panel I only see the 3d-vision options where I saw 3d-play too before.
When I install the 3d-play that I bought in 2013, it fails because it is allready installed...
So, do I need to deinstall and install 3d-play again (including the activation problems) ?
Or do you know of a different solution ?
