Annoying Blinking problem
  2 / 12
Using a single gtx 280 and thus no SLI I get blinking too, in my case brief flashes of light where the shutters are not in sync with the monitor/emitter. I used to get a couple of them a minute, sometimes maybe going for a few minutes without them, but I had them even in the setup application, so it is not a game driver/FPS/vsync issue.

I managed to reduce the blinking by a very noticeable amount by re-running the 185.85 setup application and, when prompted to select my emitter setup (single computer, living room or multiple computers running 3d vision), I chose the "living room - together with IR remotes" option. I assume doing so forces some sort of increased transmission fidelity or pairing between the emitter and the glasses, hereby reducing out-of-sync phenomena, but I am not sure. For me, it reduced blinking from a couple times per minute to nearly zero. I'm very happy with the glasses now.
Interesting suggestion, I just might give that a try. I get a series of flashes in rapid succession every 20-30 seconds, although at this point I've gotten pretty good and simply tuning them out so I barely notice them. Sure would be nice to find a way to make it stop, though. I keep meaning to call nvidia tech support about it, but they're only open during the week and I rarely get home from work early enough to call....and generally speaking my encounters with nvidia tech support by email have been less than productive.

I have vista x64 and a Geforce GTX 295.
I also get the blinking problem, not in all games, but it is most noticeable in the Call of Duty games.
When I disable SLI, the blinking is nearly gone. It is much much less frequent, so I definitely think so there is an issue when Geforce 3d Vision is combined with SLI.

My guess is that this problem is related to the micro spikes you receive when using SLI/crossfire.
As an example:

You are playing with 30 fps which means you should have one new frame every 33,3 ms.
The issue SLI and Crossfire as well currently struggle with is that the frames do not refresh constantly.
This means, that at 30 fps the first picture may come after 33,3ms but the second picture takes about 50ms, the third only 16,6ms (just an example).
The two cards just don't work exact synchron.
I think because of this the rate your glasses refresh is not exactly synchron.

As I'm not using SLI, thats just a guess without proof... anyone knows more about this?

I think we probably have two different problems here which might both be traced back to the glasses not syncing correctly: one is the SLI issue which can be somehow fixed by turning off SLI and consists of rapid flash sequences, the other is happening on people with single GPU set-ups (like mine), and I was getting a single bright flash every 10-15 seconds at peak, but not flash sequences.

My subjective perception was that the shutters were getting out of sync for a period long enough for me to perceive the "non-dimmed" monitor image, which is significantly brighter than what you see through the glasses. However, that might have been just my particular problem.

I did some extensive play testing today and I am about 99% as good as I can be, I just get one-two blips per 10 minutes or so, not nearly as bright as my old "flashing" and I'm totally content with that now. Not sure if I managed that only by the re-pairing of the emitter and the glasses, but that was the only thing I changed.

Heat was my problem. I got my temps down by messing with the air flow and BAM no more blinking while using SLI. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

It has nothing to do with heat. If your glasses somehow stopped blinking/flashing at the same time as you changed the airflow in your case it's sheer coincidence.

I don't know about him, but I'll say I've been using 3d Vision with SLi for 6 months and I've never noticed any "blinking" or "flashing" unless I turn my head away from the IR emitter and it's losing connection.

I don't think I've ever seen it noted in a review, and the people I've shown it to didn't notice it either.

Very strange.

Thanks for your input, Brian. I wonder if it's possibly a bad batch of glasses rather than a single bad pair? That could explain why so many people report this same problem, but not everybody. I have to believe if everybody, especially reviewers, were seeing the blinking/flashing I'm seeing it would have found its way into several reviews. There's no way to overlook it, it's like a strobe, it's not subtle.

I've gotten very good at ignoring it after seeing the flashes every few seconds while playing for the last couple of months, but at this point I might just RMA the glasses to see if maybe another pair wouldn't have the same problem.

I've just been hoping to find some other solution as I'm pretty sure being without my 3d for a few weeks during the RMA process will kill me. ;)lol

Hmm..I think its drivers. I get no flicker playing Left 4 Dead. But I get loads of it just using the stereoscopic viewer which requires a lot less horsepower! Its as if there are periodic losses of sync. You can see the glasses are no longer being driven at 120Hz properly during that time.

Sorry to hear :( Maybe there's something to jonstatt's suggestion that it's driver-specific. I'll try to do some testing in various games this week and see if there's a pattern of certain games blinking and other games not. If that's the case, I could live with that answer as at least it would indicate to me once and for all that there's nothing wrong with my glasses. As annoying as it is, I'd be content to hope for a fix in future driver updates if I just knew for sure I didn't have a defective set.

Do you only get the flashing in SLI?
