Is there a fix for this? It's a huge problem that when I sometimes sit infront of my main screen, something randomly thinks its a good idea to open up on a screen that isnt even turned on.
E.g right now, both notepad and Steam opens up in limbo, cant reach them unless i go into the living room, turn on projector, turn on wireless keyboard/mouse, move them to screen 1.. It sucks.
Also, it's really odd that you can't even use "only show on screen 1" if i click that it will automatically directly turn into "extend".
Edit: ok, found a solution, had to click "disconnect this screen" (which isnt even turned on in the first place). I really think this implementation is rather lacking.. Is there a way to have presets for this so you can just click a keyboard combo to get what you currently need? I have 2 projectors (in different resolutions) + obviously the main screen.. so to have 3 presets to get what i currently want would be really great.

I use DisplayFusion for this.
You can bind a key(s) to move all apps to the window you are viewing.
Will not move WMC though.
You can buy it on Steam, I'd wait for the Fall Sale.

I use this as well. Must have for multiple display's IMO.
It's kinda criminal windows just doesn't deal with this more gracefully.

Nvidia does have NView, but it's full functionality is exclusive to Quadro cards. Years ago, it was available for GTX users.

They have implemented a small portion of it back into the consumer drivers for Dual input displays (a display that uses two LCD panels to make up one and needs two separate cable connections) Such as some of the early 4K monitors. A side benefit, is that now it's possible to use 2 displays for surround, instead of the previous 3 display requirement.
Another app like Display Fusion, is UltraMon. But I don't think that it's been updated in a long time and probably does not offer anything for W10 users.
DisplayFusion also has a free version and/or demo? I forget.

I might be missing something here, but on Windows 10, you just hold the windows key and use the left or right arrows to get a window to swap position to another screen.

By chance, a new Humble Bundle includes DisplayFusion. https://www.humblebundle.com/lifehacker-software-bundle
If it's any consolation, Mac OS X doesn't handle windows properly either. You can manually set up your windows to be just right, then if you disconnect from your monitor, like taking your laptop with you, they will randomize all the windows. Sometimes left outside the current view. My Mac friends also wonder why this seems to be so frickin' hard. (As a software guy- it's not that hard, they just don't care.)
