So I recently picked up a 3Dvision setup and have a couple of potential concerns. I've noticed that while testing (by holding down the button to lock the lens shutter) that only 25-30% of the lens is completely opaque, right in the middle.
Looking through the sides of a lens (which are semi-translucent) produces a ghosting effect, which becomes really annoying if I'm looking dead on at the display.
I have a few days to return/exchange them, but I'd appreciate some insight on whether or not this is completely normal. I called Nvidia support, but they couldn't understand the fact that it wasn't a monitor-related problem, and had no clue. arrh..
Insight appreciated,

That is how mine look, only dark in the middle (but you can still see through them) and I've got ghosting in almost all games. I did notice recently though that my monitor did need to warm up to the 120hz. After about 20 minutes, the ghosting disappeared in Warhammer Online. Can't speak for other games though, UT3 is especially bad.

When did you buy it? maybe it's an issue of a bad batch.

Ordered them on 03/01 and they arrived 03/06, so one month today. I would like to know what others who DON'T have ghosting experience when they press and hold the power button. If it's completely black then yes, we have a problem.

Agreed.
I actually returned the first pair I bought, only to recieve a second pair that suffered from the exact same issue.
Hopefully someone can chime in and tell us how the glasses should normally behave.

The likelihood of a bad 'batch' just doesn't seem very good. They would need absolutely horrible quality checks (really, none at all) to let something of that magnitude go by.

No kidding, but I currently have little reason to believe otherwise.

i did notice that the lenses do not go completely black when holding the button but they were not designed to block light indefinately. when i use evga precision OSD( temp monitoring tool) it only appears on my left eye and not matter what i do i cannot see it though the right lense. using a dlp i notice no crosstalk but i have only tested two games.
on a side note i have read many people saying that checkerboard is a deal breaker for them. from my experience there is no perceptible loss in resoloution even when i watch with one eye closed. the image appears continuous and does not flicker. so imo its a waste of money to have passive polarized( no offense likay) now that wobbulation is in town. rather than burning two lamps, having a lower res(unless your running 1080p projectors) and having to deal with all the hassles of front projection i can sit close to a big 3d screen. i have probobly spent more time in the spore creature editor than anything else.

I spent quite a bunch of time figuring this out. The Samsung bundled LCD does not refresh the image instantly ... instead, it scans from top to bottom. Therefore, only the vertical center of the screen has minimal ghosting. As far as I can tell, the glasses shuttering is only a minor component of the ghosting issue. The non-zero scan time from top to bottom accounts for most of the ghosting. You can see the ghosting minimize and then reverse if you move your viewpoint up and down in an FPS (mirror's edge or otherwise).

I don't think its possible for it to go completely black. You have to remember that your eye isn't as far away from the LCD as your camera is.
Easy way to tell if a ghosting issue is the glasses is if you move your head around if the worst areas move around with it. If they don't then its a TV/glasses sync issue, not necessarily the glasses themselves.
