The holy question.... Beamer or LCD?
  1 / 2
Hi all,

I need help. I want to switch to 3D as fast as possible and I search for the right setup.

Right now, there are so many different solutions, and I am not able to decide which one is the best, without taking a look by my own.

I tried to read online-tests and user reports, but unfortunately I cannot find any clear reasonable answer. And YES, I have searched in this forum, too.

The problem is, that all the beamer-guys are fascinated by their beamer, and all the LCD guys are fascinated by their LCDs. And >90% of them give their advice to all the other users wihtout knowledge about the opposite side.

So PLEASE: I need answers of guys (or girls), who tested BOTH, and please, not for 5 minutes in the Media-store only!!

There are two possible and usable solutions:

FULL HD 1080p LCD 120HZ <----------------------- VS.--------------------------> HD-READY 720p BEAMER 120HZ

So, PLEASE dont talk about 5000$ Mitsubishi solutions, or your 5$ selfmade home-cinema!

Obviously, there is a quality advantage because of the 1080p on the LCD side. And obviously, there is a bigger picture advantage on the beamer side.

The very only question is:

Will I say: "WOW DAMN! The picture quality of my FULL HD LCD is so fantastic, I want to touch this Mass effect 2 - girl, because I think it is a real woman!!!", after buying an LCD.... and I wont say the same with an beamer?!

OR

will I say: "WOW DAMN! The picture is so big, it is filling up my whole room, I want to stand up, and want to walk to the Mass effect 2 - girl, by my own because I think this is a real room!!", after buying a beamer... and I wont say the same with an LCD?!

Which influence is greater, bigger, more fantastic, and more playable?

And do not forget: Before posting, think about the following question.... "Did I really tested both systems??"

Thank you very much

Mabe just be happy with what you have =) 3-D is pretty pointless right now, just save your money and wait for a better method, the Nintendo 3-DS has an amazing method of 3-D without glasses which we may see on flatscreens "properly" in the future so quit stressing over the 3-D rage thats Robbing people of there money...

It's getting old to most people because it's just a gimmick to suck you out of your hard earned Cash =/

nVidia do a cool job of it, but really thats about it, mabe go for a multiscreen experiance, will be cheaper and much more effective for entertainment and gaming.

Besides whats wrong with the 3-D world you live in?

Take care and hope this helped =/

I notice you don't mention ghosting (which in 3D terms means stereo crosstalk), which is a problem on LCDs. I would recommend you have a look for all the 120Hz LCD reviews on the website below (he's reviewed at least 3 of these screens) -

http://3dvision-blog.com/

- and look at the pictures he's took through the 3D Vision glasses of the ghosting on these screens and decide for yourself whether it would be an issue for you.

Hi all,

[/quote]

I have both the samsung 2333 screen and the acer 5360 beamer - not sure this is really going to help - I still use both - yes the lcd is sharper and better colours, but yes the beamer produces a good picture at 720, colours not as good, sharpness a little less, but it's made up for that with the wow factor at the large screen and considerable ghosting reduction.

if I had to get rid of one it would be the lcd, keeping the beamer - but I would miss the lcd, especially for normal pc work and a quick 5 minute blast gaming.

If im sitting down to watch a movie or a proper stint in a game - I would choose the beamer

like I said - probably not much help :-)

So i had a 2233rz I bought after this DLP beamer, and I tried using that LCD for 30 min , then I gave up. /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

funny everyone ignores screens, talk about white like nothing else exists. /pinch.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':pinch:' /> spending on screen / room at all? What results do you expect?

Solutiongaming has probably 800:1 contrast only when the pj is in 2d mode, then that lumens drop to mere 5-10% of that 2200 lumen in 3d mode (screen size counts) ,and all that contrast is gone due ambient light hitting screen, bad black levels and not enough brightness. You percieve that as worse (washed out) colors and other bs /tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> . Notice how more washed out the 2d mode looks with white screen, thats ambient light killing off colors for you.

Indeed this IS a very good help, because you want to sell your monitor, even if you have to navigate through windows via beamer.
If I will buy a beamer, I will have a normal FullHD monitor, as well. It will be sold, if I will decide to buy an LCD. (So the LCD solution will be 350€ cheper round about).
So I think, it is a good pro beamer comment.

Thanks! Noticed!

Furthermore it would be great to get an opinion of a guy, who is not using the most ghosting monitor. (I think so, because of many online-reports)

Keep the beamer, this is coming from someone with a 52 inch 3DTV. I love the TV but the beamer is so much more immursive.

I'd only consider a projector if I had somewhere to set it up permanently where I can have good light control.
I do have this for my home theater, but my home theater isn't setup for gaming.
As was mentioned in an earlier post, you need to budget for a good screen, even with decent light control 800 lumens (which is what you really get on these 3000 lumen projectors in 3D) is borderline without a high gain screen.

LCD's have there limitations, but I find the experience good enough.

Thanks for the link, it was very helpful to know, that there is no LCD, which has completely NO ghosting. The tested 27" LCD would be an option, too. But it will be more expensive then a normal 3D-beamer. 0o

Thanks! But I dont know, how to compare that. Because you have to play without 120hz on your 3DTV I think?! For that reason you are maybe using side-by-side 3D or something like that, correct? For that reason your 52" TV has a 26" 3D picture, I guess.
But Anyway, Thanks for the comment.

I have a very big living room. Right know, I have my full HD Epson beamer to watch TV on a 120 inch selfmade screen.
So, both criterias are checked. The second screen will be perfect like the first one, and the second beamer will setup permanently to flash into the other direction.

But you have talked about light.
I cannot guarantee, that the room will be dark the most time. Because of my girlfriend watching TV on the first beamer etc.
I think the most time, there will be repressed light.
Is a beamer no good choice anymore, if there is repressed light the whole time?

And another question:
When starting the thread, I thought about a close decision, but as I can see, EVERYONE sais, that a beamer would be the better choice!!
Is here ANYONE, who would prefer an LCD, even after playing games on a beamer?? If no... my decision will be made.... of course.

suitable room for projection has no bright coloured walls, or if you can't do that you have to use a "high contrast" (high power) screen for 3d.

Google for dynaclear , you want something similar.

I have been 3D gaming on a 2233RZ for the past year and a half and just got a HD66 beamer a week ago. I also have JVC RS1 projector that I have been using for a couple of years so I was already use to the big screen wow factor of a projector setup. The 3d image from the HD66 at 720p is SO MUCH better than the 2233rz, mainly because of the competely ghost free experience and because the 3d effect is much more pronounced on a bigger screen. As long as you have the space for it there is no doubt that the beamer is a better experience in my mind. The only thing is that having a high gain screen would probably make it even better. I currently have a DIY blackout cloth screen that a built years ago and have always been happy with it. The 3D image is just a little dim on it though and I am toying with the idea of painting it with one of the high screen paint formulations that I've read about over on the AVS forums. I still may not bother though because the image does already look good.

Check the sig, I have both a 1080p 3D monitor and a 720p 3D projector. For my money today, I'll take the projector every time. Yes, I notice the crappy resolution compared to 1080p. But, as fish99 pointed out, the projector wins out on crosstalk. This is a function of the technology. The lcd shutter glasses cannot switch instantly, so you get some bleed through while they and the lcd screen are in transition. However, a DLP projector's color wheel spins through projecting the whole screen in red, blue, and green and does it fast enough that your brains combines them into a full picture. The key here is that most of DLPs throw in a blank frame, too (so 120 times per second you see red, blue, green, and black) and the glasses time their transition during the black cycle. This means literally zero crosstalk.

The way I see it is that 720p 120Hz 3D projectors like the Acer H5360 are so cheap now that you can afford to buy one for big, cross-talk free 3D and by the time the bulb runs out, hopefully you'll be able to replace it at a similiar price with a 1080p version.

Thanks to both!
The thread is a few days old, and except the Nintendo guy, everyone is using a beamer.....

Obviously, there is no one, who tested both and sais "LCD is better". So The decision is made. I will put a second beamer into the living room. Now, I need to convince my girlfriend..... /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

Thanks to all!
