HTC Vive release date and launch price announced

I have to give credit to the HTC Vive for the innovation of the hand controllers and sensors but with the risk of sounding like a naysayer, none of the game demos I have seen impress or excite me. My initial reaction is $1,200 CAD will be an expensive dust collector. I can't help but get the feeling we've gone back to the days of 640x480 resolutions and playing a game in 1024x768 was a luxury. VR is the start of a great idea that has potential but needs to grow up and mature by 10 years. Perhaps I've been spoiled with 3D vision but I have to say that playing a game like Dead Space 2 in 3D using a projector on a 120" screen is mind blowing. There was one level where you had to fly a little space ship pod from station to station and the illusion of being there was impressive. Nothing has matched the experience of the Dead Space games in 3D on a 120 inch screen and projector setup. It is the total sum of all the parts, with the helix fixes of course :) Everything I have seen thus far only resembles a sample or glimmer of interesting ideas. None of these games seem like a full experience and I can see being bored after the novelty wears off. I remain optimistic for VR, but it's going to take a few years to evolve. Until then, I at least got a backlog of PC games to play in 3D which should keep me busy until then! Hmmm, another play through of the Dead Space series is in order...lol

I've ordered both because I'm always an early adopter but even so, my experiences on the DK2 were freaking amazing and beyond what I got on my 3D vision projector 110" screen setup. I know exactly what you are talking about with dead space 2 because I can clearly remember that moment as well :) At least you are experiencing games in 3D vision which is already miles better then any 2D setup. Here is a game you might find interesting if you like dead space.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiqExGynEnM
Here is a game you might find interesting if you like dead space....
Thanks for the link. Great video, this kind of thing excites me for VR. I have been following the Rift for awhile and two points in the video link makes a lot of sense. 1.) Industry veterans. Think of a guy like John Carmack who is not only highly technical, he has a ton of experience surrounding games and what makes them enjoyable experiences. Tech alone cannot achieve this. Great games with a sense of full experience is what drives hardware success. 2.) Knowing the limitations of VR in it's current form. Utilizing the VR headset as a camera mechanism to connect to the character in 3rd person sounds pretty cool. This can offer the full experience. The first person perspective seems like the obvious choice for VR but the way the developer from Insomniac explained the 3rd person perspective, it makes sense. The ability to phyiscally move around as it is with the Vive while functional, seems half baked to me since you can't for example, walk or run down a hallway. I hope they don't invent treadmills with VR in mind. I've tripped on one at the gym and not only is it painful physically, it's embarassing as shit....lol...I have no problem sitting in a chair and playing a game like Skyrim in 3rd person. I suppose if it is implemented correctly for VR, could be quite immersive and provide that full experience with great FOV. I hear that Euro Truck Simulator 2 is pretty cool with VR. Folks over at the forum talk about it. I have hundreds of hours in that game. Anyway, I'll probably pull the trigger on one of these VR headsets in the fall of this year. I love tech and always like new toys....outdoor soccer comes first for this kid...ha ha....being a Canuck here in Ontario and the warmer months coming, need to get out of hibernation...lol What province you in Conan481?

Someone's made a game for the rift where they push rift players around in a wheel chair. It's called Conans a c*nt! It starts off where some fool thinks he can room scale properly with a rift. He walks around, bangs into things and unfortunately breaks his legs. This is when the vive player has to walk into the room, pick up the mangled mess of a rift player who is heard muttering ...."room scaling seemed so plausible"..... and "they promised it would work" (albeit through superior headphones) and place him into a wheel chair, which the vive player now pushes around the room. This gives the rift player an excellent opportunity to test the amazing 3D positional object based audio (that isn't atmos or DTSX) and listen to that excellent 3D positioning...... of the vive player laughing behind him! But did you hear how it moved? Glad I made you change your mind and buy a vive Conan! Consider yourself educated in the ways, glad you've seen the light! :D

HOWEVER, remember that without trying VR and experiencing it for yourself, it's impossible to know how much it will effect you... 3D gaming is also just a gimmick.....until you try it! If people were more open minded and actually tried 3D vision before condemning it, then it would have been much more successful. That's why I'm gonna try all the VR that I can. DK2 made me see the possibilites, but the poor visual quality kinda ruined it for me. GearVR had some really compelling experiences as well, but you can only do so much with a phone hardware, but now I think we will finally see what VR is capable off.

Maybe we can play Hover Junkers in multiplayer. What's your steam ID, so I can add you?

These are my top Rift "exclusive" games that I'm looking forward too: If you're a fan of Mario or platformers. Luckys Tale looks really fun and having played 3rd person games on the GearVR and DK2, I think they are really awesome in VR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KezCxrrchGE Esper 2, which I played on GearVR is an amazingly polished game, with portal like writing and humor with great puzzles and it's coming to the Rift with enhanced graphics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDcz5yB97I8 You want a great looking Space VR experience, check out Adrift. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b98j9w7Pet4 There is lot's of great stuff for launch, but I guess we are still waiting for the system seller, BUT VR has to be experienced first hand. Something that looks mediocre may in fact be amazing in VR because of the sense of presence and immersion. Example. I played Alien Isolation in 3D vision Surround, and played it on my DK2 and the DK2 experience was FAR superior to playing it in 3D vision. I seriously felt like I was their on the DK2, When I think about playing it on the DK2, it's more like recalling a memory or dream. It's crazy and the DK2 SDE was horrible and visual much less appealing then my surround setup at the time. VR is the evolution of 3D gaming, and I think we who value ultimate immersion will really enjoy VR, even though some of the games looks less polished then we are used to with current triple A titles. Here are my 3D vision setups I've had over the past few years: single monitor 22" samsung 3D vision, Samsung 3D vision surround, Acer 5360 DLP projector, Benq 24 2420T surround setup, Sony HMZ headset (2 versions) Epson 5020 projector, Optoma HD66 projector, Mitsubishi projector, Sony 300es 4K projector, Benq 1070 projector, LG 49" 4K TV, LG 8700 OLED 1080p, LG 9100 OLED 1080p, LG 9200 4K OLED (current TV), almost forget that I've owned the Rog Swift, and still own the Benq 27" 3D vision monitor. I've had a CRAZY amount of 3D vison setups. LOL. and the DK2 experiences were the best for me and converted me to VR. The DK2 resolution was too poor for me and I'm really hoping that the consumer VR headsets are acceptable in that

It was like 10 degrees yesterday, same thing on Xmas (more like 14 degrees) and also at times throughout Jan and Feb. I've been riding my motorcycle all through it! So I'm definitely not complaining. ;)

I love tech and always like new toys....outdoor soccer comes first for this kid...ha ha....being a Canuck here in Ontario and the warmer months coming, need to get out of hibernation...lol

What province you in Conan481?

yeah, the winter here can be brutal! I think that people who are looking for more traditional experiences but wan't that VR immersion should get the Rift, and those you want room scale (at launch) and don't mind the more experimental type of games and tech demos should go with the Vive as an all in one solution.

I'm also in Ontario. Wasaga Beach, which is great during the summer, but currently it's like fucking Siberia here. Luckily I'm going to Central America for 20 days on the 14th.

Torontonian here... and what are you guys talking about it being cold? Winter? Pffft. As far as I'm concerned, winter called in sick this year. It was like 10 degrees yesterday, same thing on Xmas (more like 14 degrees) and also at times throughout Jan and Feb. I've been riding my motorcycle all through it! So I'm definitely not complaining. ;)

Very interesting thoughts from the Budget Cuts developer explaining why there won't be room vr on the Rift: "Currently, all of the publicly available information points towards the Rift+Touch primarily being a forward-facing, non-360 experience. Whether or not the Rift can technically support room-scale doesn't matter all that much to us as developers, because in the end, as long as room-scale is a fringe setup used by a small fraction of the customers, rather than the recommended setup, we'd be losing more than we gain by targeting that platform. That's of course not to say that Rift+Touch a bad platform, it's the best one for seated experiences, the same way Vive is the best for room-scale experiences. All of us developers would love to talk about the Rift+Touch and PSVR+Move, sharing all the information and thoughts we have, if we could. But that's not how companies work - the way Valve lets us freely use and talk about the Vive is an exception, not a rule." https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/478w8r/dear_oculus_you_might_have_a_slight_messaging/d0bunes Also ironically he thinks that room vr is what made him thought that VR is not a gimmick: "Room-scale is what convinced me that VR is more than a gimmick for games, so in terms of quality of experience I would go for Vive. " https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/478w8r/dear_oculus_you_might_have_a_slight_messaging/d0c3lq1 Also since Conan said that there was no one preferring Vive over Oculus here's a fantastic reaction video after trying the Aperture demo on Vive, check his conclusions starting 9:50 compared to Oculus, saying "that's exactly what VR should be": https://youtu.be/XCrnEbxOR60?t=9m50s

You fairies don't know what cold is. Try living in the UK. I went to Lapland over Christmas and it was -27C in the day, it got to -40C at night. Bo3b I'm glad you've got a vive. Does that mean you'll be seeing how easy is to get all the 3D fixes to work now we can use SBS mode? :D
