3D vision, openGL and confusion
I have read in several places, several different pieces of information. And, well, I wanna get to the bottom of it.
I have heard that since about version 171 of the 3D vision drivers, openGL was supported with non quadro cards.
I have heard the only way to get openGL support is to buy a quadro card.
I have heard that there are 3rd party drivers that support opengl and the 3dvision hardware.
And finally (And the one I am most interested in, aside from getting it to work without a quadro card) there is software out there that will convert opengl calls to directx calls in real time, allowing you to run opengl games using directx, and thus with nvidia 3d vision.

Can someone please shed some light? I have a couple of opengl games I would love to play in 3d. Not enough to buy a $4,000 card mind you, but would still love to play them.

I think it's 3D Vision Pro that supports OpenGL. It's a different product meant for professionals that do... something or other with them that ain't gaming. You can check NVIDIA's product page to read how it supports OpenGL and what it requires.

There are a couple of freeware utilities to convert OpenGL calls to DirectX but they only work with fairly primitive games.

There are some third party drivers out there but I haven't looked into them at all.

As of right now to run OpenGL 3d you need either:

3D Vision pro + Quadro card

3D Vision + GL Direct(pre Doom 3 OGL games only)

Old Nvidia 3D Forceware 162.50 + 7900 series card or earlier

IZ3D's(third party) OGL driver will reportedly be fixed this year. They are trying to work on a universal solution that benefits everyone and runs on the latest games. And Tridef as far as I know, is in even worse shape as far as OGL goes.

I don't think opengl games will work with 3d-vision pro even if you get a quadro card (not 100% sure though). The only way to get 3d with those is for applications that uses quadbuffered commands for opengl (which doom3, quake4, prey etc doesn't). There could be a slight chance to change this in the consoles for these specific games but again i'm not sure if this option even exist.
The best shot for those would be the old nvidiastereodrivers, winxp and 7900.

Then this leads to the question WHY did NVIDIA do this? I have heard rumours that it was done to force professionals to buy $4,000 cards. I have heard that it is not practical. I have heard many different things. So the question is why did they do it? And do they have any plans to support openGl? I and part way though Amnesia: The Dark Decent, and can only imagine how much better it would be in 3D vision. The game is already as scary as hell, 3D could only make it better; but of course, its openGL :(

Regular 3D Vision + Quadro card will also do OpenGL quadbuffered stereo. It is the Quadro card, not the glasses kit, that does the OpenGL stereo. However, it doesn't convert non stereo games into stereo - the application must be programmed for OpenGL stereo.

There are Quadro cards that do stereo well that are only $120-$150. We use the Quadro FX 580 and get perfect stereo.

Now, how powerful are the Quadro $150 cards for 3D gaming compared to there $150 Geforce counterparts?

That my friend, is the million dollar question. You solve that one, and we'll make you the new Nvidia CEO.

Right now all I want to do is to play Doom 3 in 3D with a decent framerate without having to dig up ten year old hardware. Maybe I should contact the make a wish foundation with that as my last request.

Geforce and Quadro Cards have the same architecture chip with slight variations between the two(microtransistor-wise) not to mention Quadro cards have the more developed drivers, more Video RAM, better and longer warranty, ect.

There used to be a time when developers trying to save a buck or a grand, would buy Geforce products then install Quadro drivers for it, and it would still work!

This was a while ago though, Nvidia has since made hardware and software differences between the two cards so drivers don't get installed for the card it wasn't intended for.

I believe 3D vision Pro supports OpenGL in stereo, simply because a lot of professionals and developers use OpenGL, so it would make sense for Nvidia to create a product that would allow 3D vision with OpenGL to allow those professionals to view their work in Stereoscopic 3D.

I've made a OpenGL stereo application... which works perfect with Quadro FX and CRT monitors....

I've bought an Quadro FX1800 video card, ViewSonic VX2268wm stereo ready monitor, the nvidia 3d kit.....(glasses) and ... I get stereo, but a terrible ghosting ......

I am still running XP....

Do you have experiences on this terrible unacceptable ghosting...??
