Silent Hunter 5 and 3D Vision Petition to NVIDIA (Andrew please...!) and Ubisoft
Hello,
Well, it has been confirmed and a trailer full of news and hopes has just been released for the upcoming title Silent Hunter 5, a WWII German (U-boat) submarine simulator, developed by Ubisoft in its studio in Romania.
One of the news of this title is the complete modelization of all the compartments of the submarine (kitchen included)!, all the crew with own initiative and ability of interaction, and first person/free roaming perspective!
The previous u-boat title of the franchise (Silent Hunter III) worked in old school nvidia 3d system, and it was really impressive, more than Left4Dead or TombRaider Underworld, for example, simply because of the confined spaces of the submarine and crew so close to you that it gave a specially intense "I'm there!" feeling, more intense than what open-space games can deliver in 3D (which btw, is already amazing). At the same time when in the conning tower/exterior the feeling of vast ocean spaces was there. The 3D really shines with the contrast between infinite and confined spaces.
Unhappily although the 3D environment was wonderful in 3D, the HUD was completely offset, and it could be only played in 3D with HUD deactivated or by playing with 3D settings somewhat tuned down (convergence, separation), which reduced the big 3D potential of Silent Hunter 3. Also some places (stations) of the submarine needed different 3D settings than the rest...And the periscope view needed also some tweaking in the code of the game (just as a sniper view in fps games)
At side of these glitches I think that I don't exaggerate at all if I say it is one of the few games where 3D Vision is more impressive, much more than in most FPS, or even racing games.
The worst news is that Silent Hunter 4 (developed by same studio after SH3) doesn't work at all in 3D (neither 3D Vision, nor old-school nvidia system). Now the same studio develops Silent Hunter 5.
Ubisoft has publicly endorsed the 3D Vision technology (Avatar, etc). So I would like to ask, or better to pray Nvidia and Ubisoft to work together to bring what might be one of the best submarine simulators (and franchise) around, to the true 3D Vision that it deserves.
I would like to add, that personally I don't know of any (and I mean ANY) person I have shown Silent Hunter 3 in 3D to, that was not the most impressed by 3D, and now most of them have bought 3D solutions (most of them 3D Vision kits!). Sure other games look wonderful and impressive, but there is no doubt for me; according to my experiences no other game in 3D impress people more than SH3.
In my sessions to show friends 3D, I show also COD (2, MW & WaW), Grid, TombRaider Underworld, NoLimits Coaster, L4D, etc no question, they ask me to put back SH3 and they spend the rest of the session looking around the sub. And they are NOT simmers at all...
I think that it could be a good chance to promote 3D Vision. I know that sims are not the top selling genre of all the pc games, but after all, Silent Hunter has sold 1.5 million copies which is not a negligible customer base.
This is a post mainly directed to Andrew/Nvidia and Ubi, and I would love to hear some word from Andrew (even a simple, "no promisses but we will try to work on it"), if possible.
Also I would love to read people’s opinions/support.

I simply love the silent hunter games. From what I see in the screenshots, it seems to be based on the SH4 engine, I fear that it will not support 3d vision.

I'm also for this calling to attention to Nvidia/Ubisoft as well. I love simulation games and since there hasn't been a S3D compatible WWII submarine game in the market for so long it would be great to put my hands on one that really is.
If this game allows user to pause and jump to the outside view roaming the sim world then it also must have user customizable convergence presets. Virtually all simulation games must have these presets in order to have the same depth immersion between the inside (close view) and outside (sim world) views.
So while at it, please NVDIA/Team 3DVISION: put in couple convergence presets key for the users!

Sorry to bump my own (old) topic. But still we don't have a decent (or any) profile for Silent Hunter 5?
I understand that Nvidia is not interested in doing a profile for Silent Hunter 3 (although it is a real shame, because it deserves it more than a lot of recent releases!), but please, could you do a profile for Silent Hunter 4 and Silent Hunter 5? They both are the same engine, they are built one over the other, so a profile for one should work for the other with no extra work or very little. In fact they work, but with gfx glitches about water transparency, some halos and some explosions: type of things that you have fixed in other games.
These games are specially impresive in 3D because of the narrow spaces inside the sub. Please could we expect some profile? A word from someone close to Nvidia would be very welcome, even if it is to say "no".
