First of i wanna say i have zero hour experience before this with VR headset. Tried one of those cellular phone cases to watch 360 videos with my iphoneSE (yes too small screen) but that´s about it.
I currently use a curved 135" screen with dual projector setup playing 3D games with fullHD passive 3D (1080p for both eyes) from about 4 meters distance.
My friend bought pimax4k headset. i drove there today at the same trip i got some new screen material, so i had seen any setups ect so i kind of was in the dark about everything. He had gotten project cars working so we tested it first and then some 360 static image as the time was on the card and my friend had not put that many hours on the device so he was also little unshure about everything.
My fist impressions were WOW ...not from what i see but how cramped feeling i got from the FOV
if you ask me the 100-110 degree FOV is a joke ! I felt like i have my head in a tube, talk about imersion.
I don´t think that feeling constantly help to bring imersion.
I don´t know why i did not get to have sharp visuals, i felt constantly like everything is a little blurry.
yes there is ghostin. quite a bit in high constrast scenes.
The crostalk is wery annoying once you notice it, atleas in high contrast games it´s gonna be there all the time ( one reason i chose omega filtters for games and not polarizers, zero crosstalk).
Don´t know why but the project cars looked super crap even with the 4k resolution. i don´t know if the pimax takes 4k@60hz from the input or is just the panel 4k, but it looked no better. If we turn the AA on wow it was uplayable as the frames cut too low with gtx980ti.
All the time i felt like the separation was too much even we changed the ipd setting. and i all the time i fellt my eyes were too close to the screen like 10cm.
It´s a super hassle to use way more not user friendly as 3d vision with sli.
All in all allthough vive and oculus would give twice better experience i would say 3D vision from a big screen with my dual PJ setup is like 10 then VR is like 2 ... or maby that´s too much.
Happy to say im going to the fairs in 7 days and hopefully get to try out vive, oculus and psVR to compare but
right now only good thing to say about pimax is the tracking head movements was good, actually pretty exellent. And yes you hardly see the pixels. that´s about it.
And mostly what i felt after the test... man the FOV sucks and man i have not seen project cars looking that garbage in terms of resolution and visuals. And the 3d efect wasn´t that good to be honest.
even the static 3d image felt lowress.
I hope there was something terrible wrong with my friend setup !

Seems everything was ok with your friend's headset.....which means The Pimax4K is pretty lame! The fact alone that it is not using HDMI 2.0 but HDMI 1.4 instead says everything about native 4K support!
I am a little bit surprised about your positive headtracking-feedback. Nearly everyone who tested the device confirms that there is hell of blurring as soon as you tilt your head.
All in all it seems my decision to cancel my Pimax-order was just right! :-)
Thanks alot for sharing your experience, Meta!

I did not notice blurring, only ghosting. But it could be the fact it was so blurred all the time :D ha..
But i meant the latency when you turn your head it felt snappy. but that´s about it.

Hadn't heard of this one before, so I took a look at some specs, and the reviews.
This thing is a total piece of crap. This is the classic Chinese knock-off, concentrating only on the spec that gets the buyers attention, the 4K resolution. And price, of course. No attention to anything else, or whether the experience completely sucks or not.
This is 4K in name only. The reason you saw it being blurry is because it's HDMI 1.4b for 4K, which is just indefensible. That means to get 4K, you cannot run any faster than 30Hz. That's not going to cut it for VR, that is hurl-city.
So, it seems they cheat it by running at 1080p, upscaled to 4K, in order to get to 60Hz. Also unacceptable from a VR standpoint, but maybe possible with something like Asynchronous Time Warp. But, the 1080p is going to look terrible, as it's split between two eyes.
It doesn't have positional tracking. This is the part that know when your head moves forward and back. Without it, you feel like your head is stuck somehow, and it's not very convincing. This is what GearVR does as well, and it's marginal. They claim gyroscope tracking, which is possibly better, but gyroscopes were abandoned because they drift over time. So you wind up with a head tilt for example.
This is basically an Oculus DK1.
Maybe worse. I have no idea how they manage to get ghosting in a headset with a split screen. Should be impossible. Maybe this was 'smear', or high persistence on the screen leading to last frames being visible? It should not be physically possible to see ghosting like we see with 3D Vision setups.
So... do not base any assumptions about VR on this piece of crap. If your friend can get his money back, he should.
The gold standard for VR right this second is the HTC/Valve Vive. Try to get a demo of that setup, and you will see what true VR is all about. I still personally prefer 3D Vision, but real VR has moments of serious awesome.

While the Pimax definitely leaves a lot to be desired overall it seems it is not total garbage in the end.
There are numerous reviews across the net which confirm a significantly higher visual fidelity for the Pimax compared to Rift and Vive. The device even got a "best VR"-award from an expo. But since this was an Asian VR related expo I guess there was some biased decision making involved ;-)
According to those reviews I mentioned above the screendoor-effect is basically non-existent on the Pimax. No positional tracking is pretty lame but I have to admit that I was impressed by the Gear VR even without positional tracking. Unfortunately the Pimax has too many problems to be really enjoyable but regarding the "4K"-screen alone it seems the device is not too bad.

Don't be confused by the reviews, this thing is total garbage. People were raving about the Oculus DK1, and that thing totally sucked too.
The hardware specifications make this a deal breaker. It is not possible to do a proper job at 4K using HDMI 1.4b. If you think the specs are wrong, maybe it's possible, but the Primax website itself says 1.4b.
People's standards would have to be impossibly low to accept this level of VR. The GearVR is actually far superior here. This is at the level of Google Cardboard, and interesting novelty, nothing more.
The biggest problem I run into with VR is that the people reviewing are never-ever 3D gamers. This is the first time they've ever seen stereoscopic, and even with a shitty headset like this- it's stunning, leading to a good review.
Be wary of random reviews on the internet. As you know it's full of the most insane stupid shit imaginable. And that's assuming it's not straight up shilling/fake reviews for the company. If you've never heard of the reviewer, it's probably wrong. If the reviewer does not also review the Vive, and compare, it's definitely wrong.
VR makes for terrific demos, but you really have to be critical, because there is far, far too much VR fanboyism to get a real picture.

I Also said to someone that lack seeing proper 3D ever is the one reason why people get edited on VR.
i will definetly Try the oculus and vive at the fairs next weekend but still the basics are so off to me its propably a
Couple years untill i would like to get into VR.
I have 980ti for even normal fullhd 3D i would like to buy another or 1080ti... needs money
Need a new cpu and mobo...needs money
VR needs it even more as im not even slightly interested to play tech demos. I want AAA titles for it.
The major letdowb was The FOV that was super limited and felt uncomfortable. I don't wanna turn my head to see whats in my preferal vision, I wanna see it.
The lack of positional tracking as an idea feels not important, i don't know maby that increases presence but some how
I feel its un nessissery as when you play enough you don't move your head like that, Back and forward alot. Its like polarized 3D glasses, the only work when your head is not tilted. But you never actially have to worry your head isnt oriental right, it just is
About the resolution. I think the there actually could be something wrong with the pimax just as the specs in pimax does not differ that much from the oc and vive and the panel on pi is higher res so it upscales, eather its the worse upscaler ever or there is something actually wrong.it was that smudged.
But all in all in experience, usability ect if oculus and vive are 10 times better still i feel like the time for VR is not in couple years if im looking to replace my system . Ok maby at the side but atleas i Have so many things in my shopping list before 700€ headset,
The 300€ would have been ok to buy it on the side ans use for few titles.
Im not shure not it is the time to make lots of money, not sell hardware.
Its kind of funny how oculus costs over 2 times it was suppose to. And vive is even more a joke on its Price point.
Companys are Bettin' people get as exited about VR as phones now days, whick prices have Also gone to Joke sums.
Actually last night i found a statement saying there has halpened something in the shipping ocerseas with he lenses that causes blurrines,
I personally don't quite buy it but it would be great it that claim was true.

Im not saying i want more with couple hundred and its kind of unfair to compare thousands of dollars costing dual pj setup to a 3-700€ headset. But i would gladly pay 1000€ Or more for a superb headset with great FOV
Vive is Almoust thousand here and thats a lot for it even with out testing it.
But offcourse all of these things are personal preferences and you gotta Try out self what you value most.

This is exactly the reason why I didn't ignore the Pimax instantly. I found a review for the Pimax on
http://www.vrnerds.de/
This is a German VR-related page and the folks there definitely know their stuff. So they are dealing with everything VR (especially Rift/Vive/PS VR) on a daily basis and they should definitely be able to properly compare those devices.
While they also come to the conclusion that the Pimax is not quite the headset you really need they confirm that the visual quality of the Pimax is definitely ahead of Rift and Vive with basically no screen-door effect.

Why doesn't any producer make a good quality, Full HD HMD on which you can view a large screen tv and have crisp image and decent FOV.
It is definitely possible with the current technology but on the market you see only VR headsets with large FOV and screen-door effect not suitable for all game types, LOW res headsets with decent size screen, and good quality screens with low res and low FOV.

My thoughts exactly. They fucked up the transitition to VR if Playstation VR fails its 3D in home all over again.
Not everybody gives a Fuck about moving in space ect.
I move all day, i have like zero interest into crouching and moving in space in VR.
I wanna sit down, take a controller into my Hands and start playing great 3D games and if the trade off for looking left or right
Is a tube around your head feeling low FOV, im happy to stay in normal stereo and use the controller to turn the camera.

Be wary of random reviews on the internet. As you know it's full of the most insane stupid shit imaginable. And that's assuming it's not straight up shilling/fake reviews for the company. If you've never heard of the reviewer, it's probably wrong. http://www.vrnerds.de/
Thanks for that review link. I'd agree that in general that should meet my bar for a given review. They've at least tried the Vive, and it's clearly not just straight up advertising.
Keeping in mind that I read a Google translate from German, I still thought the review was pretty weak though. Maybe they are trying too hard to get clicks or their policy is to not be too harsh.
As an example, they say they cannot see the screen door effect, but that text is still not readable in Virtual Desktop. If it's 4K, 2.5x the Vive, it for damn sure should be readable. This is consistent with my observation that the only way Pimax can hit 60 Hz, is to run at 1080p. So, it's pointless to have a 4K screen that is upconverted from 1080, that's just indefensible. But the reviewer doesn't really seem to understand the technology.
They do talk about smearing, lack of tracking, and small sweet spot, so I guess my main objection to the review is that it is too short, or not enough actual detail.
Essentially they think everything is terrible about it, with the sole exception being the resolution. So as long as you don't move your head, and only look at static images like photos, it's good because you don't see the screen door effect.
For what it's worth, in my experience the screen door effect is not significant on either Vive, Rift, or GearVR. You can see it if you focus upon it, but gamewise it's never a problem. Unlike DK1 for example, where it was game breaking, like I observed in my review. Rift's Achilles's heel for me is the goddamn god-rays. Vive's Achilles's heel is the low resolution making distance viewing bad (like 800x600 screen).
I still think that Pimax qualifies as a really shitty VR headset. Not even worth the $280.
This is the sort of terrible product that can actually slow down VR. Like metaloholic's experience as his first VR experience, the reaction will be that if that is what VR is about, it's not worth doing. That's actually not the case, VR is limited, and it's not even close to being as good as 3D Vision on a projector, but there are some parts of VR that are very impressive.

Yes the vrnerd's review was pretty weak and undetailed. But after reading it I looked for other reviews and they all confirmed the same weaknesses but all of them also confirmed the better screen compared to Rift and Vive. Of course it was clear to me that the Pimax isn't able to feed native 4K using just HDMI 1.4 but I couldn't find a single review that didn't rate the sheer visual quality of the Pimax higher than Rift/Vive (no other aspects and features considered). So initially I hoped for something like a Gear VR with a really good screen.
After I had a look at the official Pimax forum I instantly canceled my order ;-)

VR makes for terrific demos, but you really have to be critical, because there is far, far too much VR fanboyism to get a real picture.

i will definetly Try the oculus and vive at the fairs next weekend but still the basics are so off to me its propably a
Couple years untill i would like to get into VR.

It is definitely possible with the current technology but on the market you see only VR headsets with large FOV and screen-door effect not suitable for all game types, LOW res headsets with decent size screen, and good quality screens with low res and low FOV.
