Wanting to try 3D
Hey guys. Long time and dedicated PC gamer. Cutting off other hobbies so I can deal strictly with this one, which leads to this. I've always been fasinated by 3D and I'm upgrading my system, so I'm ready to plunge. I want to try the Asus g sync monitor and a Titan X. I've read a lot of bad things about the quality and reliablity of the asus display. I know it's a nice unit, but the 3D is the selling point with the resolution for me. I personally use a AOC 4K monitor for gaming now and love it but I want 3D more. Is it even worth a try? I scan thru here from time to time and it looks like a lot of games don't work properly or not at all. I don't want to go out of my way for something that half works. My back up plan is 2 Titan Xs and the Acer 4K g sync monitor. More people make it sound like that the way to go. I'm not a fan of 1080P, but I read BenQ makes the best 3D monitor.

Once you try 3d,you won't ever go back. You'll be as perplexed as the rest of us that anyone even plays in 2d anymore. But out of the box, 3dvision is all but dead (because most devs and even Nvidia ignore it): very few games work in 3d out of the box anymore. So I couldn't in good conscience recommend it 'out of the box'. Luckily, this community exists. People here have created a couple of tools that can be used to fix games. The upshot is that many if not most high profile (and many low profile) games get fixed if you're prepared to wait a few weeks or months. All you then have to do usually is download the fix and paste it into your game folder - 30 seconds of work. As for 1080p, yes it's a compromise, but I guarantee you that the benefit of higher resolutions utterly pales into comparison to the benefit of 3d. Also, pixel size isn't *quite* as much of an issue in 3d as in 2d. In 3d,each eye gets a different image which acts as a sort of natural anti aliasing to an extent. Also, you can still use nvidia's control panel down sampling to downsample from 4k if you want. You won't get the extra pixels, but you will get the extra smoothness.

So if there was a best 3D panel, what would it be?

I personally recommend the VG278H. Though for the better experience, go for a 3D projector (if you have the space). You'll be limited to 720p (which sounds awful), but somehow with a projector it doesn't feel like a significant step down - and the large screen size more than makes up for it in terms of immersion. Quite a few of us here are projector users (I have a projector and the VG278H).

Acer announced a 34 inch curved screen 21:9 gaming monitor that supposedly will have a 144Hz IPS panel with a resolution of 3440 x 1440, the XR341CK. It's unknown if it will support 3D Vision. I think Display port 1.2 has the bandwidth for it though. http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/acer-predator-xr341ck-34-curved-gaming-screen-with-g-sync.html

If you go with this option, you may well need those 2 Titan X-es. For a 1080p monitor or projector, SLI 970 is probably the way to go for now. That should outperform a single Titan X in 3D most of the time. You could also go for 2x 980, but I personally don't think it's worth the price increase over the 970.

I don't think any of us will go so far as to say 3D Vision is in good shape, it's limping, and unlikely to get much attention from NVidia. Having noted that, take a look at HelixModBlog. http://helixmod.blogspot.com/ And look through the list of games that are fixed. There are a handful of other games that are fixed and work well, like Tomb Raider and Batman games, but if you don't see anything you like there, it's not likely to work. Hopefully something out of 300 games strikes your fancy. I would be hesitant to plunge for the 1440p screens at present. 3D is extremely demanding already on horsepower, and that takes it up another notch. Unless money is no object, I'd wouldn't recommend going with those monitors- too many problems, not well supported. If you have another device that already does 3D like a TV, you can make that work as a test case to learn more and understand the state of the world. For that matter, for grins, you can run any of our fixes in anaglyph for free as a trial run. It's not as good as the actual hardware, but it would give you a good sense of how 3D looks, and what you can tweak. I still think 3D Vision is worth jumping into today, we've got a giant list of games that currently work. The future is hazy, but the present is still good.

For me, 3D is a huge step forward in games. You won't have to wonder if you'll reach some platform when jumping, you'll know it just looking at it without needing to move the camera. It also makes the screen look much bigger, with the ability to look many meters inside the screen. Sometimes I see that the furthest depth is farther than my neighbor's house :p. It's funny that when I bought my monitor (XL2411Z), I played in 3D only a few games. But the last 4 or 5 months I've been trying to play in 3D every time the game is compatible or has a community fix. Another cool use is emulators. You can play games in Dolphin and PPSSPP in 3D. That includes Gamecube, Wii, PSP and some N64 games. It's sad that 3D Vision receives few official support. Developers are also to blame for this.
