While I haven't been following the latest development it seems to have slipped my attention that nvidia has introduced another deliberate, arbitrary, and foolish limitation by removing generic CRT support and alternative S3D modes from their drivers???
So to sum it up:
NO OGL?
NO generic 120Hz aka CRT mode for CRTs, 120Hz displays, and beamers?
NO generic TVplay?
No alternative stereomodes such as side by side, interlaced, checkerboard, whatsoever?
Can someone confirm this? That 3Dvision is seriously stuck and probably thus will stick forever in the dead end road of being available exclusively for an insignificant number of arbitrary selected hard to get by displays and even applications? Why so?
All of these features actually were formerly part of the technology so cancelling them out one by one not only MUSt have happened on purpose but also seems a very stupid move. Why should I buy one more nvidia GFX card that are typically priced higher than the competition? Right now I can already playback S3D BR movies through my PS3 already, my GeForce powered system won't let me. The only advantage over the competition is /was the gaming market and now they seem to just give that away with S§D on consoles and AMD cards on their way....
I've been on nvidia's bandwagon since Riva128 (seriously), early S3D adopter (Elsa and even Metabyte/H3D, which [s]were[/s] are at the foundation of nividias solution. And the only reason sticking faithfully to the green goblin camp was my childish hope for return of the S3D.. now as this seems futile I am afraid they lost a customer for good...

I'm not sure if CRT mode is disabled or broken. In the latest drivers its still in there as an option, it just doesn't work. Which leads me to believe that its bugged and Nvidia hasn't gotten around to fixing it.
And Andrew promises things that he can't deliver. He promised OGL support in 2010, its now 2012, it's not happening. At this point I don't see 3D Vision getting any new features now or ever, the driver has pretty much gone into maintenance mode simply to ensure compatibility for the latest drivers(just like the old driver did). Let's be honest, the man is more worried about people stealing 3D TV play(read my sig) and closing forum threads than listening to the community.
Within the next few driver releases it wouldn't surprise me if 3D Vision was cancelled altogether or at least support was dropped. I'm sure Nvidia could use the 3DV programmers on other projects that need attention, rather than having them twiddling their thumbs waiting for a nonexistent roadmap for a product going nowhere.

Face it guys. The times when nvidia added useful features to their cards and driver are far gone. What annoys me most is that nvidia just had to choose one of the worst technologies for 3d, probably because it's cheap.

I am not talking about adding new features but rather removing old ones :S And why should I care about the technology at all if I am not even able to put it to practical use. Still, I wouldn't even agree that bit is a bad technology. Everything else (line reduction with circular polarisation, dual display like IZ3Ds solution)is not workable for a 3rd party after market product since it relies on the apropriate monitor. The very beauty of shutter technology lies exactly in it's flexibility: It theoretically could work on everything - if they just would allow for that. If you recall Metabyte's driver you should know what I mean.

What is the problem?
Are you sure your monitor is on the official nvidia list?
THAT, my friend, exactly is the problem. This list gets shorter and shorter by removing generic modes. (it never was a long list from the getgo)
In the beginning (Metabyte driver stack with H3D dongle and glasses up to Elsa Revelator) I could use any monitor (CRTs at that time) at any refresh rate and resolution the monitor would support (yes, that means down to 50Hz if I would like and up to 240Hz) under any Win95/98/XP, Direct X, OGL and even 3dfx.
Then nvidia bought up Metabyte's IP (very much like they did with 3dfx). After that they started their castration rampage on the drivers: First to go was the 3dfx support, then they pulled the OGL plug, then the XP plug, then limited the whole thing to 100Hz upwards, then pulled the dual output, interlaced & checkerboard plug, introduced 3DTVplay just to pull the generic plug shgortly afetrwards and now they seem to pull the generic sequential frame plug alltogether, which in fact limits the technology to just a fistful of hard-to-get-by TN LCDs and some projectors -> dead technology. 120Hz monitors and projectors get more and more but rather none is supported by 3Dvision. Just tell me why I should keep my glasses or my next GFX board should be a nvidia one...

Worldwide, the writing is on the wall for CRT. Production is certainly dipping. According to the most recent hard data from DisplaySearch, CRT shipments totalled 23 million units in Q3 2008, down 15 per cent from 2007's numbers.
But when you compare this to the 26 million LCDs and almost 4 million plasmas that were shipped in the same time period, you can see that CRT technology is still hanging in there.
The key to CRT's staying power (at least for now) is price. In China, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East, flat-panel prices are still too high for many consumers. But once LCD prices fall, nothing will save CRT from ending up alongside cassettes, Teletypes and HD DVD in the technology dustbin.
If they are not being produced why would support continue? Can you support my 1974 Ford Fiesta? No? Then your support sucks.

Honistly i dont get why poeple hold on to CRT and say i like it cuz its 120hz! But the colors comparied to LED or even LCD are horrible not to mention most CRT's are at max 1200x720 pixels (not 720p because they arent 6:9). If you paid for the hardware to beable to run 3d games spending 300 for a 24 inch LCD from acer etc doesnt seem like much of a deal.

your complaining about not wanting to buy another nvidia graphics card because they took away CRT support? lol maybe you should spend that money on a WIDELY AND READILY available 3D LCD/IPS/Projector before worrying about your next graphis card. This stuff cost money to develop, i do not see the problem with nvidia wanting the customers they designed this software for to upgrade to new systems were they can make the best of thier hard work and centrilize thier development.
And people here crying about how andrew, a rep mind you, from nvidia didnt keep his word? are you a little girl? seriously that sounds like such a cry baby statement i cant even wrap my head around it. You guys act like you should be given everything and that nvidia should just eat the cost of r&d for this with out a second thought. I spent retarded amounts of money on my 3d vision set up and it was totally worth it, because i understand that im apart of a niche and i have to pay to play. I understand the development limitations and i know THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE IT BETTER IS TO SUPPORT NVIDIA AND DEVELOPERS! show them your gratitude and it might be a little more worth thier while! Talk positively and try to correct people who have negative views on 3D. Its the atmosphere surrounding 3D that has killed it lately, not nvidia or the lack of crt support.
also every time i update my drivers i see added 3d support

It's not just about CRT screens, the removal of these modes stops people from being able to use the best picture quality for their screens.
For example, I bought one of the best 3dtv's a few years ago that would work with 3dvision. Even though it wasn't supported at the time I knew it would work and it was going to be supported in the future according to Andrew from nvidia. But as we all know now they didnt, and the removal of these modes means I would have to use 3dplay which just sucks in comparison.
The thing that gets me is that if a small games developer, like the one that made trine 2, can add support for just about every single 3d mode available for no extra cost to the consumer then why cant nvidia just leave them in..

Removing CRT support removed flexibility from the drivers and stopped legitimate owners of supported hardware from working around limitations in terms of 'supported' resolutions and advertised modes. Nvidia probably did it because of illegitimate use of the emulator, but the posters on this topic saying that CRT displays themselves are old tech are completely missing the point.

What is the problem?
I've had no problems ever since I bought my 3D Vision 120hz monitor (Benq X2410T) and a 3D Vision kit.
It has worked with all drivers with all my three cards (8800 GTS, GTX 560 Ti and GTX 580).
It has worked with PowerDVD 10-12.
I can view the 3D pictures I've taken with my Fuji Finepix 3D W3 as well as the movie clips.
Obviously most games does not work perfectly in 3D Vision but some look really great.
From my perspective nothing has been removed. OpenGL never worked in this incarnation of the driver.
Are you sure your monitor is on the official nvidia list?
How can you consider shutter glasses cheap?
You say that because you don't know the whole story of the 3D Vision driver. It began its life as Forceware 3D under Windows 98, 3DV is built on top of that. And it worked with literally EVERYTHING. There were also a great many options in that driver that have been removed, like the ability to set your monitor size, locking a refresh rate for all modes, 3D stereo gamma adjustment, front plane and back plane adjustment, Open GL support, the ability to create new profiles for your own games, the list goes on.
The old forceware 3d driver, while the compatibility with games was spotty, had ten times as many features.

Long time ago I used a geforce 4200 and a 19" CRT.
My CRT died and I seriously can't buy a brand new one.
Why are so many people still using CRT computer monitors when they are clearly a dying breed because of the limited lifespan.
Mine got increasingly worsening focus.
How many TVs are truly 3D Vision supported (I'm not talking about 3DTV Play) ?
Some Mitsubishi DLP that are not available in Europe as far as I can tell.
Use the old driver stack from early 2000s if you like it so much.
Watching Blu-ray 3D with a HDMI 1.3 reciever and HDMI 1.3 monitor is clearly something my PS3 can't do.
Before the nvidia reboot of the driver and the birth of 3D Vision I doubt 1080p 3D with 60 fps (120hz) was very common.
I really get the impression that you want to use 3D Vision without having a 3D Vision supported monitor.
When did they last remove support from a monitor that is actually on their list?
Any recent changes to reduce compability has as far as I can tell affected any of their supported monitors.
As many don't seem to have understood: When I talked about "CRT mode" I meant "generic mode" that would feed frame sequential output to any display, CRTs, LCDs, projectors, your choice.(hell, this driver even fails on dual Link KVM switches just because they don't pass the EDID)

See? So, why can't 3Dvision simply work on every display with native input 100Hz and above, like it once did? Or 3DTVPlay work on every display with HDMI 1.4?
After all, frame sequential output and frame packaging are standarized (As are side-by-side, over/under, checkerboard,color-code, dual output, etc. etc.)
There simply is no bloody need for this "3D Vision Ready" sanctification.
If they get their act together with manufacturers to incorporate their emitter and bundle nvidia's glasses or license an integrated solution with the manufacturer's own glasses, fine. But the stand-alone version should be exactly this - "stand alone" and not "stand together with a display of our choice"...

These have definitely been removed without prenotation, and features have been pulled. That's a fact, even if most of you don't miss them, I do, and I payed for it. Period. Finally, this "list" features obsolete models and doublettes (some are just differing by being bundled or bulk) So you can scratch about 50% off that list to get the effective count. It's your good right to be content with what you've got, but it's also mine to be not.
As many don't seem to have understood: When I talked about "CRT mode" I meant "generic mode" that would feed frame sequential output to any display, CRTs, LCDs, projectors, your choice.(hell, this driver even fails on dual Link KVM switches just because they don't pass the EDID)

Why are so many people still using CRT computer monitors when they are clearly a dying breed because of the limited lifespan.
Mine got increasingly worsening focus.
Mine's still working fine, so?

To have a critical piece of code that everyone can enjoy!

No? Then your support sucks.

your complaining about not wanting to buy another nvidia graphics card because they took away CRT support? lol maybe you should spend that money on a WIDELY AND READILY available 3D LCD/IPS/Projector before worrying about your next graphis card.

WHAT?!? "We are working on..." is not a promise.

It also stopped legitimate developers and QA folks from wasting time trying to support a technology that EXTREMELY few people were still using. That is the point.

Thanks to everybody using my assembler it warms my heart.
To have a critical piece of code that everyone can enjoy!
What more can you ask for?

Mine's still working fine, so?

On my GTX580? Seriously? Or should I revert to my Win98, nForce3 mobo and my 6800? (I still run this for my old HMD)

Well, as said I did 1280x1024@200 on my Iiyama at least. And now there are plenty of monitors that can - but still cannot be used with 3Dvision (e.g. quite a batch of Sammy's monitors and TVs and the all new Iiyama ProLite G2773HS)

Yes! So what? I paid for the glasses and the card(s) when and only because it included explicitedly generic 120Hz mode. I feel betrayed, now comes you...
(On a side note, I even own the first supported model, theSammy RZ2233 - which as most would agree sucks big time - more than any other 3D capable - uncertified - monitor I came across...)

As mentioned, this "list" formerly did include "all displays with native handling refresh rates of 100Hz and above" - So where are they now? These have definitely been removed without prenotation, and features have been pulled. That's a fact, even if most of you don't miss them, I do, and I payed for it. Period. Finally, this "list" features obsolete models and doublettes (some are just differing by being bundled or bulk) So you can scratch about 50% off that list to get the effective count. Which I consider ridiculous in the face of displays being actually capable of handlig S3D in one way or the other the 3Dvision could (and did) support...
It's your good right to be content with what you've got, but it's also mine to be not.
