You're probably thinking of the Novint Falcon which is a haptic controller (effectively a small robot about the size of a soccer ball from which three arms extend and connect to either a ball or pistol grip). The positioning of the arms and thus the grip can be controlled by a game, giving astonishingly life-like feedback effects. In Left 4 Dead, for example, you'll not only feel different recoil forces for each weapon, but also impacts from bullets which hit you or from walking into an object. When a hunter pounces on you it'll feel as if your arm is pinned down, when a boomer slimes you it actually feels as if you're moving through goo, when you pick up a fuel can you'll feel the weight of it, and when a zombie hits you you'll feel the direction of the blow etc etc.

It's a very, very cool piece of kit -I've had mine for 2 or 3 months now and absolutely love it. Combined with 3D Vision, it gives an incredibly immersive experience. Don't take my word for it, though, look through some of the reviews and testimonials on the Novint website (they also offer a full refund if you're not satisfied in any way).
Cheers,
DD

P.S. Novint have a referral program -if you decide to buy one, enter my code "ddfalcon" (without the quotes) and you'll get a 20% discount.

I use it mainly with FPS games like Left 4 Dead, Half Life 2 (+Episode 1 & 2), Counter Strike, Crysis, Battlefield 2, Quake 4, Day of Defeat, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Portal and F.E.A.R. with the pistol grip attachment and it's excellent with all of these. Initially your aim will be terrible, but after a bit of practise you can fairly quickly get to a similar skill level to that which you had with a mouse or even better. In fact, Novint have organized competitions which mouse users can enter and fight against Falcon players and the Falconers often (but not always) win. The main benefit for me, though, isn't about improving my aim rather it's that it's so much more fun and immersive to play with a Falcon than a mouse.

There are also a load of cheaper games in other genres which have been specifically designed to work with the Falcon (or adapted to it) including air-hockey, archery, puzzlers, driving games, shoot 'em ups and (one of my favourites) an extremely realistic pool game. IIRC there are currently over 60 games which work with the device.

Novint are also working on "F-Gen" drivers which will enable you to use the Falcon to control any game with which you can use a mouse. An early alpha version has already been released which has basic controls functioning and apparently they're adding extra features like screen scrapers, memory offset readers, keyboard interceptors and so on which will allow custom force effects to be triggered in appropriate circumstances.

P.S. I forgot to mention that their customer support is great too -the CEO personally answers every thread in their forums himself (which is a refreshing change compared with a certain much larger company that I won't name which can't even be bothered to employ a minimum-wage web gimp to answer forum queries from customers).

Heh heh. Can you imagine how odd you would look playing a game wearing this & the 3D glasses & waving the Sixense controllers around?

Would sure make for an amusing spectator experience. /haha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':haha:' />

Yeah, I think I may know what Santa is going to bring me ;) This forum has drained me of so much money... :P For anyone else interested, there is a bundle for a $100 on their website this weekend which is about 50% off.

Cool -did you remember to use the "ddfalcon" referral code for the 20% discount? In any case, I think you'll be really happy with your purchase. As I said, the support in their forums is great but if you need any other assistance getting set up you can PM me here too and I'll be happy to help.

Yeah just read about that offer myself on Novint's forums. Somebody said they'd ordered at the higher price just before it was announced and Tom (Novint's CEO) replied "for you guys who just bought one in the past week or so, and who read this, we can refund you the difference ;) send a note to falconsales [at] novint [dot] com". As for whether or not you can use my referral code in conjunction with the other offer, I'm not sure but it can't hurt to try :).

That NIA thing looks pretty cool too. I read a few reviews where different people had very mixed results using it, but then I saw a video here where a guy from the company took on Klaus frag^m Wiedemann (who's apparently a European champion at Unreal 3) one on one and scored something like 5-11 which is very impressive against such a good player. (The guy with the NIA was using a mouse just to aim and the NIA to control all other movement and firing). Interesting stuff!
