Another push to bring 3D where it was shortly after Avatar?
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/stream-tv-and-boe-team-up-to-bring-high-resolution-glasses-free-3d-to-the-global-market-300580527.html And speaking of Avatar, Mr Cameron said he wants Avatar 2 (2020) in 3D again but glasses free like stated at https://www.tribute.ca/news/avatar-2-may-be-first-3d-movie-without-glasses/2017/06/28/ So this can only help our cause to have 3D come standard. After all there are still many movies (and most animation movies) made in 3D so it's far from dead. It wasn't just widely adopted but this may change again soon. Keep faith!

Nice. I hope it gets done and sells well (and isn't extremely expensive).
Avatar 2 (2020)
Ha! I remember when it was going to be released in 2016... Glasses-free 3D can give 3D a second chance with "casual" users. I hope it will go well.

It's a quote that has been misunderstood, distorted and repeated... James Cameron's R&D deal with Christie projectiors is about increasing the brightness of commercial projectors to improve the theatre 3D experience. (Mr Cameron isn't happy with the current dark picture in 3D theatres) Glasses free 3D is just a wish he has for the future but doesn't know when it will take off. (by the way, glasses free 3D has been available for years, but there are hard technical reasons why it does not take off) There is no practical and affordable way to make a theatre sized screen display glasses-free 3D for a large audience. Avatar 2 will be released in 3D with glasses just like any other 3D movie.

It's not even obvious how to do it with the new fangled microled wall size arrays. ... Even though they can multiplex the hell out of those...

Lots of marketing speech in that article. Luckily, RealD publishes the actual stats on their website : https://www.reald.com/#/ultimatescreen Really nice stats. Just in case the image doesn't work, they have 2 models
[.]3030 : 2.1 Gain, 250:1 circular polarisation contrast, 38° half-gain angle (hotspot)[/.] [.]2040 : 2.8 Gain, 500:1 circular polarisation contrast, 32° half-gain angle (hotspot)[/.]
For comparison. A typical silverscreen has a 2~3 gain, 100~200 : 1 polarisation contrast linear (circular is worse) and a half-gain angle of 20~30°. Hybrid 2.5D screens do compromises to reduce the hotspotting (reduce gain and increase the half-gain angle).
