Well, I shouted out as much as I could to warn the S3D users out there. I hope I reached a few folks. Thank you all who tested out beta to find this issue!
I'm rather dubious about HeliX's chances of fixing this. If the Z info from the shadows is gone then about the best that can be done is to just pick a distance and render it there. Maybe it can be pushed out to infinity (without pushing the interface along with the shadows).

I was finally able to disable the beta and restore to 1.4. Not sure why it wasn't working before, but I got it working eventually so all was good. Today I find that 1.5 went out of beta, and Steam automatically installed it, so I'm back to square one. And yes, I have since disabled automatic updates so I won't get caught again.
My sole hope is that I made a complete backup of my folders when I was still on 1.4. Does anyone know which files need to be overwritten to revert to 1.4, or at least to disable the files causing the issues with shadows? Is this even possible?

I didn't even bother trying to pick out the files. I just renamed my Skyrim directory to "Skyrim - porked", made a second copy of the directory that has the 1.4 version, and renamed that to "skyrim". That's all after turning automatic updates off, of course.
Now all seems well. It's not going to stay well for the long term, though. Modders aren't going to be making new mods that work with version 1.4. I won't be able to get new features and bug fixes from Bethesda. That expansion they've been hinting at is very unlikely to work with version 1.4. The "Death of Shadows" will get me eventually unless Bethesda takes this change back. Considering their attitude towards S3D, the chances of that are pretty low.
So yeah, not a good day at all for the Elder Scrolls.

Shadows aren't at screen depth, that would be welcome compared to the ****ized state they're in now. It would look like you're looking through a stencil of shadows (like the unfixed of KoA:tr).
Something really weird has happened to the way they're rendered. For example now looking at a pillar sticking up from the ground about 30 feet away has the shadow rendered on opposite sides of the object in each eye (!?)
Shadows don't just have a "Z depth" per say they occur along the z plane (hopefully) so this might be something HeliX could fix - look what he did to ME3 after all.
Real piss off though, I missed this thread till today and of course it updated and is no longer beta. Guess I won't be play Skyrim for a while.

I put Skyrim to not update automatically. Then, yesterday, a Steam update has changed this setting and returned to the automatic option, without noticing it.
I stumbled, surprised with the message: "Steam just downloaded Skyrim." I am very upset, because I have a backup of the vanilla game, but had not made a copy of the game in version 1.4 because I relied on settings update of Steam ....
I can only hope a genius to solve the problem of shadows in 3D.

As far as I know the developer, Bethesda, doesn't give a flying crap about 3D, so we're definatelly relying on the modders out there to overcome this annoying issue.

Luckily 2D users seem to be having problems with shadows too, so I think there's hope. Bethesda needs to be more responsible about these things though. The Creation Kit which they made is all about mods isn't it? Do I misunderstand Bethesda's relationship with mods? If they're going to point players to third party and user generated mods, then they should be more careful not to break them.

I'm going to try restoring my old directory, but I've noticed that Steam keeps changing my settings to "Always keep this game up to date." I've changed it a few times, but it seems to revert back after every reboot. There's no point going to all this trouble if Steam will just overwrite everything again.
An earlier post mentioned we can disable shadows with this setting: iShadowMapResolution=0
I don't have that setting in my skyrimprefs.ini . Instead I have iShadowMapResolutionSecondary & iShadowMapResolutionPrimary. I changed them both to 0 with no effect. Should I just add the above setting?

I've rebooted my machine and it still isn't trying to auto-update Skyrim. It DID revert some time between my buying the game and the 1.4 update, though, so I certainly believe that is happening.

Apparently, Steam updates the game even if you don't start it up (also, Skyrim was set to not update automatically on last playing).
I last played on Sunday, and current update was displayed as 1.4.xx. I hadn't opened the game since then. I went to back up the Skyrim directory today, and I noticed the "date modified" of Skyrim.exe was yesterday. Sure enough, when I started up Skyrim today, it was updated to 1.5.xx! So this likely means that everyone whose PC is connected to the internet is updated to 1.5 automatically.

I thought that perhaps replacing "Skyrim - shaders.bsa" with the old version might fix the 3D shadows, but no - the problem is with the new executables. I tried running the old TESV.exe with the bsa files from the new patch, and the shadows are still looking good in stereo 3D.

As a temp fix, I wonder if getting a pre-1.5 update TESV.exe file (only 16.8 MB on my PC) would make us good again for those of us who have been overwritten, and have no 1.4 backup?
If so, anyone know where I can get a TESV.exe file that is only updated to 1.4?

A quick (and ugly) fix is to disable shadows by setting
iShadowMapResolution=0
in skyrimprefs.ini
At least it makes the game playable again.
Hopefully some genious figures out how to fix the shadows.
