My Acer GD245HQ review experiences of a new 3D vision user
  7 / 16
how they could put that monitor into market with such stupid and annoying issue

they could just include a 3D preset inside the menu (or just a button) to enable the OD only when needed (3d games) and the monitor could be perfect.
Today if i want to disable the OD i need to access the service menu (very annoyng) and then happen the biggest problem: the contrast/brigthness presets will be lost everytime the monitor is switched off/stand-by

I hope they fix it with a new firmware but i think the monitor should be sent back anyway for upgrading.

Today i filled a form in the Acer italian support website explaining them what happen with the overdrive..

Is my monitor faulty?
My Acer arrived today, but i'm really disappointed. Got oversharped fonts in 2d (Windows desktop) and backlight problems in 3d - lower half of the screen is much brighter then the upper. It's really noticeable during 3d gaming, specially in dark areas and also playing 3d clips.
Its strange, but the "backlight" issue is visible in 3d mode only.

Attached two pictures showing this problem. Should I replace this monitor?

Please help.

Ive got the same prob but at the borders of the screen. Yours is far worse. I have yet to try a game to confirm 100%... will check it out later tonight. But i dont recall such a huge backlight prob on the screen.

EDIT: Ok i checked it out. Ran Doom 3 and i can see that backlight only on the vertical and horizontal side of the screen. So it was not visible in the middle like in your picture.

The oversharp fonts are definately a "normal" problem. Your bleeding isn't though.

oversharp fonts is beacause you have overdrive enabled. If you want better definition in 2d applications you need to disable it. Just look at the first page of this thread how to.

In the service menu, is there a way to adjust Gain or Offset to acheive a reduced brightness? The zero´s seem blocked/unavailable. I want to use OD off, but reduce the overbright default setting that the mnitor are reset to after every restart.

And, how would a firmware upgrade go about? Need to sent to the repair shop?

i suspect it's not because it goes into standard settings but because it activates the ACM (automatic contrast management) that makes it look more bright even than standard settings.
That happens only when OD is swtiched off, whenever it is restarted.

I use the Acer eDisplay bundled software to keep my presets at least when starts Vista. But it doesnt work when it goes in stand-by. :(

I didn´t manage to change the ACM setting in service menu either... Even if it´s set to OFF already.
If we were to set this to ON we could actually personalize brightness & contrast after that.

What´s the good with a service menu if you cannot change most of the values?

For me, a definately more solid way is to reduce contrast to 75% using the Catalyst Control Panel bundeld with my ATI graphics driver.
So this will work until I either change my GPU or there is a updated F/W for the monitor available.

yes it works also with nvidia control panel
i tested some nvidia settings with ACM activated (because when restart the monitor it will be enabled) but the output is lower quality (i see less fades colors) than the monitor settings.
Anyway, i have found that 32% brightness and 27% contrast is similar to the text preset of the monitor. I could'nt make better.

Although I´m still using ATI, and plan to upgrade to Nvidia card soon the near future along with new 3D glasses. /shifty.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shifty:' />

I configured a Task Schedule Action in W7 to trigger at Log on of any user:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLI.exe" start Load profilename="Reduce Contrast"

The ATI profile 'Reduce Contrast' needs to be setup(for every user account) first.
This way the Acer overbright monitor setting is merely a fire & forget for time being.

Assumingly this procedure could be replicated using Nvidia cards.

I forced the 1.1.0.0 drivers to install in xp. They seemed to install but with a warning that it wasn't for my OS. Can anyone confirm that these drivers improve the ghosting in 3d from the top of the screen (or at least reduce it).

Most of the screenshots I've seen show ghosting but not to the degree that I am getting it. It is a complete double of the image at the top of the screen and 50% ghosting in the middle. Has anyone else got this and seen an improvement in vista/win7?

I have the opportunity to get a return/refund and just wondered if it's woth sticking with this monitor.

i use the bundled software and it works to keep my preset when i logon in vista.
But when the monitor goes in stand-by, at restart it's again overbright because use acm activated or default settings.
Have to go inside the menu and confirm my preset.

Also: the bundled software communicate with the hardware of the monitor while the nvidia control panel (and i presume ATI too) use the software to reduce/increase contrast and brightness given.
That means the bundled software is better.

Maybe you guys can help me decide.

Right now I'm debating which monitor to get. I've read most of whats available online, but I'm still torn between the Acer GD245HQ and the Alienware OptX AW2310. I'm planning on replacing my current monitor with whichever 3D one I chose, and reading all of these horror stories about terrible 2D image quality is making me lean towards the Alienware. Should I assume that the Alienware's image quality is better overall?
