Compatibility mode doesn't work

But even without tinkering with that, just adding the executable to a profile that enables it doesn't work

Well that clears things up a bit. Apparently your nVidia game profiles are not being read from the nvdrssel.bin file and some of the games you've tried probably work natively without having any nVidia profile attached to them so I guess there is definitely something wrong with your nVidia drivers or system. First thing I would do is try to fix the nVidia drivers by using Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode and reinstalling the latest ones. If you've already tried that and it still doesn't work then some Windows setting or something on your system is screwing things up. LE: On second thought you should try DDU in Safe Mode and after installing the drivers again don't touch anything related to the nVidia profiles or nvdrssel.bin and just start any game with a 3D vision rating to check if the profile is working correctly :)

Done DDU maybe 20 times in safe mode. Driver sweeper perhaps 5. I've even booted into safe mode, DDUd and deleted every single mention of nvidia from anywhere. I'm going to try a windows repair now, I think.

So after DDU'ing the problem still persists for any officially 3D vision rated game without touching its nVidia profile or tinkering with nvdrssel.bin ? I'm really not sure what's going on then :( If Windows Repair doesn't solve the issue, you might want to consider reinstalling Windows but not before scanning your OS drive for possible corrupted sectors. LE: I think one other thing that might cause this issue is having some sort of caching program installed. D-Man11 made a recent thread about this here https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1009115/w10-crashes-possible-solution

Last time I checked DDU didn't delete the 'temporary' files located in C:\NVIDIA\... I remember someone having an issue with corrupt install files located there and it just kept using them over and over again... Personally I rarely ever use DDU, I usually just delete that folder(and occasionally the one's Volnaiskra mentioned here) and do a Clean installs without GeForce Experience...

I just reinstalled windows (well, repaired it). And now compat mode is working fine. Thank you all for helping me pinpoint the issue.

Still kind of unsure of exactly where/what the issue was but either way glad you got it sorted.

My guess would be that one of low level dlls, maybe from directx, was borked. I managed to find a pretty painless way to reinstall Windows, so it wasn't too bad.
