3D gaming; is it really that good ???!
for years i am dreaming of 3D gaming, just afew months ago i found out that this is possible when you have a NVidea card, what i have (ENGTX275).
now i need to buy a new screen, the 3d glasses and unit, and a new OS (did the test for 3d on the NVidea site), and then i am done. this does cost
quit a lot of money and now i am not sure if i will do this because i have read quit a lot about this and people do say different things.

what it all comes down to, as far as i understand it is that it does look great. but movement and aiming is harder as in normal 2D, and some can get a
headache. then a lot of articles write about ghosting, specialy when your close to objects, (i don't know what i ment by this ghosting, i'm Dutch).

so, all in all, what to do? i did save money for months to be able to buy me this stuff, but now i am not sure anymore.
is it really that great ???

could someone please help me with this, who has seen and or played it himself???

thanks,

leon

I think you're gonna get quite a few varied responses to this which probably won't help you very much in making a decision as to whether or not to part with your cash.

The best answer is “it depends”…

It depends on what type of games you play.
It depends on how well those games support Nvidia’s S3D technology.
It depends on how enamoured you are of big screens.
It depends on how much patience you have in tweaking the settings to get the best 3D experience and the list goes on.

It depends on a whole lot of things that only you can decide if it will be worth the investment.

Personally, I bought the 3D Vision kit & 2 new 120Hz screens & while it works pretty well considering what it is trying to do, I think it’s overrated for what you pay for it.

Some games do give you a genuinely immersive 3D experience (Batman: Arkham Asylum, GTR 2 & Ghostbusters are all much better in 3D) others take a lot of fiddling with depth & convergence to get right & even then are probably better off left in 2D. There are plenty of threads in this forum which cover which games work well & how to tweak those that don’t.

There are people who rage because they get un-fixable ghosting (where the stereo images don’t quite match up to give full 3D & you see a doubled version of the picture) & others who swear they wouldn’t go back to 2D gaming. It’s all very personal & up to the individual & how they use their system.

The best advice I can give is to try out the tech using the Nvidia 3D discover kit – it won’t give you exactly the same effect but you will at least get a feel for what to expect. Better yet, check out a few of your local computer stores. Many of them have demo rigs set up so you can try before you buy.

Indeed it depends allot like emmSgd said. When youre playing FPS games like COD it wont help allot, couse youre game will suffer. When youre playing WoW it can really make a diffrence. Altough it takes some time to tweak the settings. Ghosting in youre case is that a object can appear dubbel. Like when youre moving the objects leave a trail behind. Sad thing is that you cant try it in holland ( im dutch too ). I decided to pass on it and go for a full HD screen instead couse i mostly play shooters

thank you both for the clear answer.
i have looked around were i life to see if there is a shop that has this set up, but there is none.

i have a 22" screen and i think this is big enough, i don't need a wider one. i play for 90% fpshooters and for the other 10% race games.
so most of my time it will be shooters, and i understand that it depens from game to game, even after tweaking the 3D settings.

i totaly overlooked the option of Nvidia 3D discover kit . what a splendit idea !!
i asume it does the trick, but not that good as the actual systhem. still, its a great way to get a little bit of 3D so to speak.
i just need to change my OS, i now have XP and i think i will install an extra OS on my harddisk, the Vista home version or so.

also do i need more power qua CPU
Recommended is: Core 2 Duo 8300, AMD Athlon X2 2600 or better
and i have: 2 processors running - Intel® Core(tm)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
but even with that it does the trick says the site.

now i just have to find out were i can buy myself such a cheep red/blue type of glasses to be able to see the 3D.
on the NVidea site it says they give them away at tradeshows and events. but those are not near me, and i don't
bel;ieve there sold in normal retail shops.

thanks!!

i have decided to first use the the Nvidia 3D discover kit, i allready have ordered such a paper/plastic cheep glasses.
now i still have to install a second OS like Vista, (don't want to stop yet with my familiar windows XP). and as soon as i have these glasses in home
and vista installed i can start testing 3D gaming.

i understand that the real 3D systhem is much better looking, but like Emmsqddo said above; i get at least a feel for what to expect.
