Today I created a .inf file that allows checkerboard and page flipping mode selection on HDTVs that support these modes regardless of HDMI type or software revision. This solves the problem of being forced into ugly scaled 720P frame packing mode on displays with HDMI1.4 inputs. I just got this working so it hasn't been tested over a wide range of displays, and software releases. My test set up is:
Samsung PN63c7000 2010 3D Ready HDMI1.4, plasma
windows 7/64 bit/home premium
gtx480
3D Vision rev CD1.45

Basically, this .inf replaces the generic pnp Monitor .inf. In effect, it does in software what the Gefen DVI Detective does in hardware.
Be aware that:
1. This is for HDMI1.4 displays only.
2. Tested under 3D Vision with Nvidia emitter attached to computer USB port
3. Tested on only one config described below, should work on all HDMI1.4 Samsungs 3D Ready Plasmas and LEDs.

Instructions:
1. Start by installing CD1.45 and make sure you see the 3DTV Play logo and 'enable stereo 3D' box is checked (nvidia control panel). I had to manually install the nvidia USB drivers via device manager, there was a yellow warning flag on 'nvidia stereo controller.' If your games have already been running in 3D, then you are all set.

2. UnRAR attached file rollermod.rar. Be sure rollermod.inf is by itself in a folder, no other .infs present.

3.To install, go to device manager > monitor > update software > browse my computer> let me pick from a list.
Uncheck 'show compatible HW' then click 'have disc'.
From "install from disc" box browse to the location of the 'rollermod.inf' file. Select it, hit 'OK' then you will be back at a box that shows 'SAMSUNG (EDID Override)'. Click on 'SAMSUNG (EDID Override)' to highlight it then 'next'. It will load and you will get "Windows successful update" dialog then hit 'close'. Reboot your computer, open nvidia control panel. You should see no 3DTV Play logo, instead a box that gives various Stereoscopic 3D dispaly type. Choose 'Generic 3D DLP HDTV' to get checkerboard.

Launch a game that is already set to 1920x1080. From the Samsung remote, navigate to 3D and choose checkerboard mode. You must have checkerboard mode previously enabled on your Samsung TV, checkerboard is grayed out by default from the factory. Turn on your glasses and you should be gaming in 1920x1080 3D checkerboard at 60 frames per eye. The only issue is that the left/right eye toggling may be reversed. To fix, use the remote menu button to go back to '3D' > picture correction. I usually had to invoke correction twice to get it to take, you will instantly see the difference.
Some LGs and Mits TVs also have HDMI1.4 and checkerboard, so this may work on them too, haven't tried.
I will appreciate any feedback.

are you able to implement SBS mode throught .inf ? it's a must have for post-2010 samsung plasma TVs as they do not have anymore checkerboard mode.

I keep reading this posts and everytime I go to a store and see those amazing New Samsung 2011/12 LED Plasma TVs and read that now the offer better glasses, bluetooth syncing, much less ghosting issues compared to my 2010 Samsung plasma 63" C7000. Then I think to myself, even these awesome new Samsung 3D TVs having all those technical advantages over my 2010 model, I woudn't trade it for the world, cause they no longer support Checkerboard.

Why would I care to game with a better screen quality, less ghosting, if I'm still only able to play games at 720p60hz? At least I can always play games in CB 1080p60hz and that is priceless, considering all other 3D Tvs in the market are stuck with frame packing and the limitations of HDMI 1.4. I consider myself lucky!!!!

IMO I don't believe this to be true. Even using the example given in the PDF, common sense shows checkerboard to have half of the horizontal resolution of a full 1080x1920 image.

The trick to the great image it produces is in the interpolation used to fill in the missing pixels.
In SBS mode for example, you cut the horizontal resolution by removing every other column of pixels. The interpolator then only has the pixel to the left and right to use to "guess" what goes in the middle. With checkerboard every other pixel is removed horizontally also, but each row is alternated between odd and even pixels removed, resulting in a checkerboard pattern, not alternating columns of pixels and blanks like SBS produces. The interpolator now has pixels on both sides and top and bottom to use to restore the missing pixel in the middle.

The image quality of checkerboard is better than SBS or TB for that reason and is very close to true 1080x1920. So until they up frame packing to 1080p60 or release faster HDMI chips, checkerboard is still the best 3D gaming format that is available for televisions today.

I've tried interleaved mode (Zalman EDID), Checkerboard and Generic CRT mode (Rollermod) using my Samsung 2010 C7000 Plasma TV. I can't really tell any difference in quality between interleaved and checkerboard. I have also used Crysis 2 in game 3D, such as SBS and CB, and I still coudn't tell any difference. All those 3D modes are half resolution per eye, so I can't really see any considerable quality difference in 3D quality. I've tried, but I can't see any at all.

Now when I use Generic CRT mode where I get 1080p60hz limited to 30fps per eye, as this mode is like frame sequential and it's full resolution per eye, 3D Vision mode, then I can tell a big deal of difference and the 3D quality really stands out. Unfortunately you can't play many games in this mode, cause 30fps won't be smooth enough for a lot of games like 1st person shooters.

I'm having the pleasure of playing Batman Arkham City in Generic CRT mode using Rollermod, and I can honestly say that Batman is quite playable at 30fps, is not really as bad as 24fps FP, cause it's 60hz vs 24hz, and 30fps is the frame rate average for consoles, so it's not that bad really compared to lame 24hz and 24fps.

Batman AC looks amazing in 3D in a huge 63" plasma screen and full resolution per eye, really makes a big deal of difference. I've also tried Checkerboard, but it doesn't have the eye candy effect that only full resolution per eye gives. I have some ghosting, but it's OK overall.

Anyway, I really like having a CB option, its far superior to FP 720p60hz or lame 1080p24hz.

All you can do is to be happy with your 2010 display and wait a few years till 1080p@60Hz frame packing is finally supported and these HDTVs have OLED displays (= zero ghosting like DLP) and are payable. /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hi all,

first here is a new Link to rollermod.rar.

I tried this mod too but it didn´t worked because my Philips 46PFL8686K does not support Checkerboard.

An other solution would be SBS or Top/Bottom Support through nVidia 3D TV Play because many TV´s support this modes and they lock better than 720P 3D and have 60Hz which is playable for shooters.

There have been changes/updates to rollermod, various versions. PM me for the correct version depending on your hardware and config. I'll send it to anyone who requests it.
