PC upgrade needed?
  1 / 2
Hi guys, so, I ordered an AW 2310+nvidia 3D kit yesterday (both should be delivered within sept. 30) foolishly without considering that my pc would not be able to run 3D vision :P that's why I need your essential help.

My actual rig is: intel e6750 @3.0, 2GB ram, xfx gtx 260, enermax 535w

I understand it's a pretty outdated pc, so what should I upgrade first - if an upgrade is needed - considering a 750 euros (1000$)(possibly much lesser) budget? Please note that i'm currently able to run almost all games at max settings.

Thank you all for your help :) [hope I'm not OT, btw! ]

This is what I'd do...

1. Overclock your CPU slightly to 3 Ghz (if you are using the stock cooler, buy a better after market one)
2. Add another 2 GB of ram
3. sell the gtx 260 and get a gtx 470

Done

Shouldn't cost you more than 300 (euros) and youll run pretty much any game at 30 fps or higher at 1080p once at medium or higher detail.

Once you want to upgrade more down the road...new PSu, new CPU, new mobo, another GTX 470 in sli...etc.

It will depend somewhat on the games you play, too. Get the thing set up and see how it goes with what you've got and what you want to get. Then decide. If it isn't too bad, you might want to just save up and get a whole new system next year.

I have an e8400 at around 4ghz, with 4 gigs ram and 2 gtx 260s. In 3d mode, I can expect to have a fairly decent framerate in older games... but newer stuff I'm usually around 30 fps at 1680x1050 with 16x AF and no AA.

So yeah, I wish I could upgrade. And my system is a fair bit faster than yours.

Ok so, i got everything set up, and it's a bit worse than i hoped. I mean, the 3d is just amazing, but the drop in terms of FPS is just unacceptable. When playing prototype you can't notice, but i get a significant drop in games like MW2 or MW1. In MW1, for example, i went from a costant 90 to 45-50 which makes it totally unplayable after 4-5 minutes ingame... Buying a gtx470 may be a good idea, but i can't help thinking that the old CPU and the little amount of ram could be the problem. Could somebody clear my mind a bit more?

3D usually only adds more stress on your GPU, for right now I'd look into overclocking your 260 and look into getting a better GPU. That said however, I ran COD4 perfectly fine (@1680x1050) in 3D back when I had a 9600GT and it runs fine on my 260GTX. I also suggest you lower/disable Anti-aliasing as that should solve the performance issue. (Thats what I had to do on 9600)

By "look into getting a better GPU" you mean "look into getting a better CPU"?

No, if your CPU was the issue you'd be getting bad performance in 2D as well which you have already stated isn't the case.

3D only usually adds extra demand on your GPU. As I said, for MW1 you need to turn off AA, then it'll run fine on a 260 in 3D.
