Get 3D Vision now or GPU upgrade first
  1 / 2
My system includes an Intel Q6600 G0 (which has been overclocked to 3.2GHz), Abit IP35 Pro, Geforce 8800 GTX, 4GB PC2-8500 RAM running Vista Premium (32bit).

I'll have the money to either upgrade my GPU from a single 8800 GTX to a GTX 275 or get the 3D Vision bundle this month

Any suggestions regarding which I should get first, taking into account that it'll be 7 months before I can spare the cash to get the 2nd choice?

EDIT: I have it connected to a Samsung Syncmaster 226BW @ 1680x1050 and mainly play FPS and MMORPGs

Well, put it this way... are the games you typically play going to be playable at half the fps you get right now? If so, then go for 3d Vision and upgrade to the 275 later this year (price will be lower by then, too); if not, then you might want to go for the 275 first and work on 3d Vision after that.

Good point. Don't think I've checked to see what FPS the games I've currently been playing run at on my machine. I know I generally play games with pretty high settings enabled ('cept for Crysis anyway) so I'd probably be willing to take a cut in image quality to improve fps.

Card then bundle.
The 3d is an amazing spectacle but it wont mean much if your frame rate isnt high enough to enjoy the visuals.

Yeah, if you're playing on HIGH or ULTRA HIGH settings now, you'd probably be able to drop that down to MEDIUM settings and maintain about 2/3 of your current fps in stereo mode (but don't bank on it. To be on the safe side, assume you'll get half your current fps in stereo mode). So the question is would that be enough fps to be playable and enough eye candy to keep you happy?

Normally I'd say get the 275 first, but in this case just because of the timing, I'd probably say get the 3d Vision first and make do with the lower fps and quality for a few months because graphics card prices are going to plummet as the 300-series release approaches. Six months from now you'll probably be able to pick up a 275 for around $150, and it'll still power your 3d Vision magnificently. 3d Vision prices, on the other hand, aren't going anywhere no matter when you pick it up.

Or as an alternative, consider picking up a GTX250 or GTX260 instead. It'll cost you a lot less than a 275 and it will run 3d Vision nearly as well. Then you'd be able to pick up 3d Vision a lot sooner. :)

Very true I would expect the cards to go down in price MUCH faster than the bundle.
Its a tough decision...

Do what I did buy the bundle on your bank card and put the GPU on your credit card. /haha.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':haha:' />/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':w00t:' />

tempting as that would be, our credit card balance is bad enough as it is :)

birthday next week so father-in-law will be sending me a cheque which is why i can afford to buy one thing, and then will more than likely receive another cheque for xmas which will pay for the 2nd.

lol Here, here! ;) Or do what I did and buy a brand new 285 AND the 3d bundle only to soon realize you love 3d so much you want a second 285 so you can run it at ULTRA HIGH settings with no performance dip. :D

Honestly, though, I love it so much I can't even be angry at myself for dropping thousands on it. hehe

Your system specs is similar to my "original" system. A core 2 duo at 2GHz, a 8800GTS, and a Sony CRT. I bought the 3Dvision the first days it came out and throughrougly enjoyed the S3D gaming for 6 mos before upgrading to a Samsung DLP, and lastly came the GTX285's turn couple weeks ago. Believe me you don't want to wait, life is too short not gaming in S3D. Framerate is not the all important factor in this experience though in reality the 8800GTS itself is satisfactory in most game except the most demanding ones, I got >20fps in Witcher, fluid motion in Tomb Raider: Underworld. Besides you can always turn off S3D to get the old fps back anytime or better yet, just walk around and look at the spectacular S3D effects. This way you can experience S3D gaming the earliest and not losing anything. A faster card can come anytime later as a bonus. What do you gain to have 275 now? More fps for those boring flat games? /w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':w00t:' />

I'll have the money to either upgrade my GPU from a single 8800 GTX to a GTX 275 or get the 3D Vision bundle this month

Any suggestions regarding which I should get first, taking into account that it'll be 7 months before I can spare the cash to get the 2nd choice?

Get the 3d vision bundle. Your Gtx is fine for playing in 3d for now.

Wait before you buy a video card.

The 300 series from Nvidia is right around the corner, and prices on everything else will drop.

a bit of a delay in updating but they arrived a couple of days earlier than expected and are working wonderfully especially with Left 4 Dead. No sign of any reduction in FPS either.

Also play it with Lord Of The Rings Online and it works pretty fine except for floating text above character/objects which doesn't quite line up correctly in L&R.

Great news! :D

About, LOTRO, are you playing in DX10 mode? I've found that the unreadable text problem is only in DX9, in DX10 I can read it just fine. However, the text does float on the 2d screen level plane (i.e. it has no z-depth), so being able to see character depth AND read their floating text on the 2d plane just takes getting used to. With a little time you'll be able to read it just fine. Also, make sure you're using the latest drivers. LOTRO performance improved significantly with 3d Vision with drivers v 1.08

For the coolest effect, IMO, check out the spiders in Foundations of Stone. They give a really cool pop-out effect.
