How well will my PC handle 3D games etc? You opinion required :) Description of my PC and your opini
Dear all
Many thanks for entering this thread and potentially providing me with the information I need.
Firstly the disclaimers: I am not an "avid" PC gamer - in fact my PC games experience is quite limited, I prefer standardised consoles even with lower specs. This should give you an insight: I use my xbox gamepad to play games still, I hate k/m combos!!! haha
So hopefully with that bit of info you'll be forgiving in your replies...
Here are my system specs, I would like to know how well you expect some of the newest and most graphically challenging games to be handled on this machine, in 3D especially.
The machine cannot handle SLI so dual cards aren't a possibility (to be honest the PC is for graphic design work and I've only just added a few games)
I'm in the process of upgrading the ram to around 8gb or 16gb, depends on what ebay lets me do at the time. Plus my PC needs certain processor specs to handle its maximum capacity of 128gb of ram - but that's very far off in the future.
Now I've installed Crysis Warhead as a sort of benchmark test for this...I've been running it in 1920x1080 mode on almost all highest settings - seemed to be fairly trouble free. However I have the 32bit application and I'm running Vista 64bit. So I don't know if I'd get better out of installing the 64bit version?
So what are your opinions on how this game will, for instance, run Crysis Warhead or just Crysis in 3D? What about other games, potentially more hungry ones (I don't know any examples really) - I think Warhead is like a graphically truncated version of Crysis? Someone said that to me, unfortunately I just don't know.
The reason I ask really is this: I installed 3D vision and ran a game and it had a framerate of about 0.1 fps - obviously rubbish, but I was using a standard 1.0 dvi/hdmi cable. I have a 1.4 cable at home waiting to be plumbed in - that should change everything, no?
Many thanks for your help and please feel free to offer an idiot (me) any more info or tips or whatever to get the best out of both my nvidia card and my pc!!! (aside from ditching Vista, that's inevitable!)

I should also add: I am not using nvidia spec 3D glasses...
I am running this on a Samsung 50 inch 3D TV - with active shutter glasses sync'd to the TV, this showed me the 3D example photos in stereo 3D with no issues, of course when the images started moving, that was another issue!

Besides processor (i know nothing of xeon I had an amdx6 but same card + ram) I had same set up and was playing ME2+DA:Origins at a little lower then 40 fps at 1280x720 at max everything else. Im not sure if that helps you at all. What he said about running at 50-60% is spot on. Try game without 3d vision and run fraps. Cut value in half and thats what you should expect.

I run games fairly well (see sig) but games like BFBC2 and Metro 2033 lag a bit and I have to turn the settings down. Darksiders and Batman AA run very well though, Darksiders is 60fps at all times. Even turning the graphics down low still makes some games look a lot better than it being maxed out in 2D, IMO. Crysis Warhead looks crap in 3D on my rig, the game has problems with water and clouds anyway, plus I have to set everything to mainstream or lower and it just doesn't look good.

Your set up should do well enough. Seeing as how you're gaming on your tv, most of your 3d gaming will have to be in 720p 60hz ... with the least desirable alternative being 1080p 24hz /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Crysis sucks in 3d, Crysis 2 on the other hand, should be /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

As others mentioned, you can generally expect to have your FPS cut in half once you enable 3D Vision with a few exceptions. Crysis 2 for example has very little frame rate hit in 3D as the stereo images are calculated in real-time by the game engine, a feat Crytek was trumpeting almost a year ago. The easiest way imo to counter this drop in FPS is to double up your GPU horsepower by adding a 2nd card in SLI, but that doesn't seem to be an option for you. However, as also mentioned, at 720p in 3D you may not need more FPS to get close to 60 FPS in many games with a GTX 460 and if you move up to 1080p you'll be limited to 24Hz anyways. Most recent games of the last 2-3 years will be able to run with a single 460 at those resolutions and refresh rates in 3D without too much issue with everything cranked up except for AA. If you feel performance is too low, a single 470/570 or 480/580 would be a solid upgrade from the 460. Personally, I find low FPS are one of the most annoying/distracting problems with 3D Vision so capped 60FPS are really a must imo to avoid a nauseating/fatiguing experience. At 1080p with a target framerate of 60Hz in 3D, I'd say 2xGT200 or 1xGF100/GF110 would be bare minimum for a good 3D Vision experience, but ideally, 2xGF104/GF114 or better cards in SLI would be my recommendation for a great 3D Vision experience.
