Emitter flashing red, not visible in Device manager
  1 / 2
I had been using my 3D Vision 2 and loving it for a couple of days. I left my computer running all night to do my weekly virus/malware full scan. In the morning Windows 10 was bugged, the Start button wasn't working. I used a fix that I found online, it involved using Powershell and a long command. It fixed it, but the first thing I noticed was that almost all the items I had on my Start menu were gone, except the ones that came with W10. I was putting them back in place when I decided to watch a 3D movie, and that's when the emitter first started lighting up (it was in sleep mode before that, I guess), and it was flashing red. I tried reseating. I tried other USB ports. I looked at Device manager and saw it wasn't even listed under "Other", and in USB there was one with a ! that said Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I tried reinstalling the driver and even tried a clean install, nothing seemed to work. I hope you have a fix, if not I have to return this ASAP.

It could be your USB drivers that's been fucked up aswell.. try a reinstall.. Clean install ? with DDU, otherwise it's not clean ! Why would you want to return it, there's need to think anything than your software is broken...

Yeah it was a clean install. And with Amazon I have 30 days to return it on their dime, if it turns out it broke. I'm going to try it on my gf's comp and see if it works.

helifax I've tried that and it hasn't worked at all, clean reinstalls, everything I can think of. The only thing that worked is restoring the computer to before I installed it and reinstalling everything again. I notice that when I do that I still can't get the 3D to work for movies unless I download codexes (or however you spell them hehe). I wonder if that's part of the problem, any suggestions? D-Man, thanks for the list! It happened again this morning. This time I had the computer off all night, but when I turned it on the emitter was flashing red. This is very frustrating.
D-Man, thanks for the list!
lol, you mean the link :) I can't take credit for the list, it's the result of a lot of different talented individuals fron the 3D Vision forums. If you are handy at such things, you can start here. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/766890/ Back to your problem... A lot of times issues like this can be resolved using a drive sweeper to avoid corrupt driver installation. As Blacksmith56 mentioned, DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) is a good place to start. You have to keep the emitter plugged in at all times during the driver installation. The light being red, indicates that the drivers are not installed for the emitter. Nvidia recommends that you use a USB port that is located on the motherboard. Make sure that you have all of the correct motherboard drivers installed that are the most current. If you have any type of quick boot option in the bios, turn it off. It might not be giving the emitter enough time to be recognized before the drivers fully load. Also try wiggling the cable at the emitter, although it's not likely a problem, I have seen it posted once where something in the emitter wasn't properly soldered or something. Overall, the 3D Vision kit is quite reliable and will last for years.
The light being red, indicates that the drivers are not installed for the emitter.
Allow me to be pedantic ^_^. Actually the RED LIGHT means that the FIRMWARE is not loaded into the emitter;) How it works: 1. You boot from SHUT-DOWN State: - Emitter is RED. - 3D Vision Controller DRIVERS pick up the USB device when Windows is booting and is Loading the firmware in the device (emitter). - 3D Vision works, etc 2. You boot from an OS restart: - If emitter was previously GREEN it will stay green!!! Reason is simple: - As long as the emitter HAS power the firmware is loaded and working on it;) - Once is loses power, the memory (some sorts of RAM/EEPROM/FLASH - don't know what memory chip it uses and the specs) is reset because the CHIP is not what we call "NON-VOLATILE" - meaning it doesn't maintain it's content on power loss - like the PC RAM :) The fact that is RED could mean a few things: - USB slot is in POWER SAVING MODE in Windows - Prevents the 3D Vision Controller driver to UPLOAD the firmaware. Recommended step is to disable ANY USB POWER SAVING in Windows (See Power Settings) - USB Cable is faulty ?!?! - USB Driver is not working correctly ?!?! - 3D Vision Controller DRIVER IS NOT INSTALLED. Check in Windows "Add/Remove Programs" that "NVIDIA 3D Vision Controller Driver xxx.xx" is installed !!! - Some sort of Software error/corruption or software that DOESN't allow the firmware to be uploaded or other unknown reason. - Last it could be an Emitter Hardware fault. But, in 6 years I have never ever SEEN one go faulty! (I have 4 emitters that are used daily. One on my Surround Desktop, 2 on my Laptops and 1 on my Parents PC). To the OP: - Try the above list and see if you can narrow it down. - Also DDU your drivers and reinstall them! If is a software issue related to Nvidia that will solve it. - Also update ALL your drivers for the Motherboard!!! (Including Chipset drivers - MOST IMPORTANT!!!) Hope this helps:)

Yes, for 3D Movies (MKV or MP4) you will need EXTERNAL codecs! Just like you do for NORMAL 2D MKV/MP4 videos! Having a codec pack installed is not an issue;) I recommend K-Lite Codec Pack: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm

Thanks, guys. I've tried all these except reinstall Win10. This cheap comp I bought didn't come with a disc, and they say so sorry but we can't send you one for that computer, so if you want to reinstall Win 10 you'll have to buy it. Very disappointing. As for the USB, only thing I could remember finding them was the power settings. I had "USB Selective suspend setting" on "Enabled" because we usually watch stuff on Plex on our Roku and most of it is stored on an external drive, it was falling asleep and I think that's what kept it awake. This whole thing makes me sad. I even restored my comp again and this time it didn't work, it's just not seeing the emitter. NVidia's people are looking into it. This thing took me months to get, I don't think an exchange is going to happen. EDIT: I noticed that the USB 2 drivers updated so I plugged it into there. The light turned off instead of flashing and now I have a ! on the USB list, saying "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)". Not sure that's gonna help much but I doubt it, hehe.

If you run Windows 10 you can get the ISO from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 Just use a program to make your USB stick bootable and "burn" it there. I recommend Rufus: https://rufus.akeo.ie/ It looks like definitely an OS problem... Hope this helps;)

When I tried that, it always got stuck when it was the black screen with the circle counting down the % installed. Once I waited for 12 hours seeing it stuck at like 48% and I just said screw it and restored a backup. I'm really afraid to try that again but I'll think about it. The problem is that Asus sold me a crap computer and some half-arsed version of W10. Thanks for your help, everyone. I'll try something soon.

Well can your run a SFC /SCANNOW in a cmd prompt to check for file integrity?? also you can run a CHKDSK Command too?? Also Win 10 has a way to refresh the install if things get corrupted, can you do that. maybe someone more knowledgable about Win 10 can chime in on that process??

I did the sfc /scannow bit, but not chkdsk so I'll give it a shot. And no, that's what I'm saying, this is some half-arsed version of Win 10. It won't let me re-install, it asks for a disk or a USB key but even when I have the .iso on a USB key it says it needs the installation disk. Asus refuses to send me one, I guess I'm gonna have to spend a $100 and just get me the full version, this is ridiculous. EDIT: no errors in chkdsk

Yes that sucks bad.. it maybe a Starter version they threw out on some laptops a few yearsd ago so maybe something similar.. I still don't understand if you buy a laptop they should at least give you a key but I guess with a half baked OS that will not matter.. The stuff some companies can pull off is sometime criminal..
