Stereo-In-A-Window on XP - It Works! (thanks Nvidia!)
  4 / 4
Gabriele,

Have you adjusted any of the application specific settings in the Nvidia Control Panel? What is your application? If your emitter is recognized, that a good sign. Nvidia's Stereoscopic player is a full-screen only app and doesn't use OpenGL what I can tell. It won't work for me either. The Stereoscopic Player I referenced in post # 41 is a player that works either full-screen or windowed. Are you using that one or Nvidia's?

On a related note, my work dual boot has been reduced to single boot (XP Pro, 64-bit) by reformat/reinstall. I've installed the 190.38 display/stereo drivers and can run stereo apps perfectly, BUT.... Only until I attempt to exit the app, or switch to full-screen. At that point the computer freezes and I have to do a hard boot. We have two XP workstations configured similarly, both using FX 3700s. I had no issues opening/closing/full-screening stereo apps on the other workstation when using the 3D Vision kit but mine's having none of it. If anyone has a suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Till then, I keep trying to figure out what's going on....

Just wanted to update this thread and let anyone subscribed/interested know that everything is now working fine. Once I turned ON the "Force stereo shuttering" option, I had no problems activating 3D Vision or opening/closing my stereo apps. If it helps, I posted my current 3D Vision settings and XP installation in this thread and am using the 190.38 drivers.

Hello everyone
Can someone tell how to find wich version off the stereo driver i am running under Xp(32)?
i find no entry in the registry for the stereo driver (i tried to find the keys from the .inf and .reg file).
I was using the 186.18 graphic and stereo driver then switched to the 190.38 graphic driver.
I first uninstalled the 186.18 graphic driver then installed the 190.38 graphic driver then restarted the computer.
On restart i just did the usual setup in the base profile.
I did not install ANY new stereo driver.
All my stereo apps( opengl quad) worked fine first time ,no trouble at all.
So i thought the stereo driver was part off the 190.38 graphic driver, right or wrong ?

In the lower left corner of the Nvidia Control Panel is a link that says "System Information", click it and after a few seconds it will pop up a window with two tab telling you which driver/components you have installed. Click "save" to save that as a text file and you can track installs for future reference. Mine says:

bigben - the stereo driver is a separate install. I would recommend downloading the beta 190.38 stereo only driver (link here) and installing the usb/stereo drivers manually using the same process I described here. I believe Andrew and others have recommended installing the same stereo driver as the graphics driver to make sure everything is compatible but I don't know if different driver versions are actually incompatible.

Hello Biglars,

I had already checked my configuration with the nvidia control panel,
but could not find any trace off the stereo driver.
In the registry i did not find any entry for the stereo driver and did not find any files referenced in nvstereo.inf.
That is why i asked if someone could tell how to find wich version off the stereo driver i was running under Xp(32).

I just finished testing testing the 3d vision kit on another computer .
XP 32 - quadro fx4600 -190.38_quadro_winxp_32bit_english_whql -dual crt+ z-screen.

-installed the samsung 2233rz + driver
-installed only the usb driver for the emitter(nvstusb.inf).
-did not install stereo driver(nvstereo.inf,OGLStReg.reg,NvStDef.reg)
-stereo display mode > generic active stereo with nvidia ir emitter
-reboot

On reboot just launched my test stereo software without any trouble.
Changed screen resolution > stereo apps still o.k.
So at least for XP32 and opengl quadbuffered stereo software ,did not need to install the stereo driver.

So maybe you don't need the stereo driver after all. I posted something similar here last Friday after I uninstalled my stereo driver and everything still worked perfectly. Perhaps you only need to install the nvstusb.inf driver and OpenGL will take it from there. That certainly makes XP installation a lot faster faster and easier. Thanks for the tip, bigben!

Ok, it works!!
now with XP 64 and my FX4600 I can enable stereo with 3d vision 190.38 drivers
The only softwares that I tested are Stereophotomaker and Stereoscopic Player, they support quad buffered page flipping

Is there any way of getting this to work on geforce crads In xp ( I have a 260)?
Like many people I detest Vista ( so many made harder applications - even with nvidia there is no nvidia settings quicklaunch and limited choice with the multiple display setup unlike the ease and simplicity of xp) - I use a dual boot system Vista/xp 32 bit and only use the vista for 3d vison. Thx for any help.
Well, my life just got a LOT better! For those users out there with Quadros and considering 3D Vision for windowed applications, you're in luck. I have no idea how crucial any of these things are on their own, and YMMV, but here's how I got there.

I work for U.S. Geological Survey and, like most other federal agencies, we use XP Pro exclusively and there are no plans to migrate to Vista. If we are going to use 3D Vision with our 3D GIS applications, it'll be on XP or not at all. When the 186.18 drivers advertised XP support, I thought 'we're in!'. And, after a lot of stumbling around, we are.

First, obviously, I installed the 186.18 XP Quadro driver. I'm using 64-bit XP and an FX 3700, so I got that one.
I downloaded the 64-bit Vista 3D Vision only driver and extracted the contents to their own folder. (If you use the executable, you'll get an error message telling you your OS isn't supported and the installation will abort.)
I navigated to that folder, found the nvstereo.inf (3D stereo driver) and nvstusb.inf (stereo usb driver) files and installed them by right-clicking them selecting 'Install' from the menu. The emitter was now detected.
I opened the Control Panel and on the Program Settings tab (my 3D app is esri's arcmap), I selected/enabled:
Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode
Enable overlay = On
Stereo - Display mode = Generic active stereo (with NVIDIA IR Emitter)
Stereo Enable = On
Stereo - Swap eyes = Off
Triple buffering = On
Unified back/depth buffer = On
Vertical sync = On

The others, I kept as "Use global setting". Again, not sure which of these are necessary for stereo-in-a-window, but I suspect keeping stereo on and v-sync on are the main ones. Just for fun, I used the included 3-pin DIN connector/2.5mm cable and selected "on-board DIN connector (with NVIDIA IR Emitter) for Stereo - Display mode and that worked as well.

3DForMe, you may need to place another order! We will be.

Hello Lars,

I am wondering if you upgraded to 192.XX drivers and whether your application was still 3d ?
I am currently trying to get a Quadro FX 3800 card to work on XP(32-bit) with USB Drivers(190.62) & the actual graphics card driver(191.78), but don't seem to get any type of 3d effect. Neeraj,

The Nvidia Stereoscopic Player is for Geforce cards and doesn't support OpenGL to my knowledge.. You'll want to use the 3dtv player available here (and be sure to select OpenGL for the viewing method).

I've tried updating my drivers to the latest 191.x versions a couple of times but had separation issues at the top portion of the screen in my 3d app (Stereo Analayst). I'm not seeing a 192 quadro driver option yet. I only see the 191 series, even in other OSes or beta drivers, If you post a link, I'll give it a shot but I think you'll have better luck with the other stereo player.

I've been using the OpenGL driver for some time and always end up going back to it. It's stable and has no real issues for what we doing (veiwing/editing aerial photos). The OpenGL page is here and the driver links are at the bottom. You might want to try that if you haven't already. BigLars, thank you for informing me about the openGL driver . It all works now. I am still using 186.18 driver for the USB controller instead of the 191.xx series, but changed to 190.58(for the fx 3800).

So, to sum up - I was trying to use the 3d vision kit on WinXPSP3 - 32 bit with FX 3800 driver and got it to work. I used the 186.18 driver for USB controller(BigLars has it working with the 191.xxx, but I never tried that) and the 190.58(openGL) driver from here for the quadro card.

Let us know if you're successful!

I followed BigLar's settings on this post.
