Tron, Avatar, etc... they do have proper 3D, but depth doesn't seem as big.
Why?
Because it's filmed for cinema.
Where you you have huge screen.
Thus separation is quite small on monitor/TV, unlike when on BIG screen (cinema), where separation is 'proper'.
Unfortunately, this cannot be fixed by adjusting convergence, but it's just how it's filmed.
So, only way to have more depth is to have bigger screen, and sit a bit further away from it.

Surely not, how come the occasionally movie like Resident Evil gets plenty depth then? They didn't make that for the cinema huh? More like they are scared of hurting the poor little non-3D initiated' eyes too much so they won't push anything out the screen very often and barely any depth. Seriously, even Avatar doesn't have that many true 3D scenes in it, even tho it is better than most. Resident Evil and any IMAX 3D content seem to be the only things not scared of using proper 3D - those were made for the cinema too you know.

The big difference is those that are filmed in 3d and not. Also if they have lots of CGI, 3d is usually much better. Resident Evil was filmed in 3d and it shows, the scene with rain at the beginning and the fight against the huge monster with a hammer if I remember well, together with the fight and the beginning too are really good in 3d, and pirates of the caribbean was also filmed in 3d too and it shows, though it not as impressive as transformers 2 for example, but you never get flat 3d like thor or titans.
