3 hotkey presets for convergence?

We arent interested in implementing a FPS counter right since its freely available from FRAPs today.
Any of the GPU monitoring/tweaking programs like EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner serve as FPS counters and are also free.

But yes I agree this would be a very useful feature, as Likay described many games have problems with different camera positions especially during cutscenes which can result in some very uncomfortable viewing in stereo 3D. Some other examples would be Dragon Age or StarCraft II before they disabled 3D in cut-scenes. Basically tweaking Depth/Convergence for normal gameplay would break cutscenes and vice versa, and there just wasn't enough time to re-adjust them as you went with the scroll wheel or convergence controls, so the "fix" was to just disable 3D completely during cut-scenes. If we could save presets then we could swap between the settings with just a few keystrokes.

A pretty easy implementation would be to allow for a few presets that save both Depth and Convergence values similar to what's saved in the NVStereoscopic3D.Log folder after hitting Ctrl-F7:

Hitting Alt-1, Alt-2, Alt-3 saves current Depth/Convergence settings to one of those 3 presets. These keys could be rebound in the NVCP to avoid game conflicts.

Default for enabling those presets would be Ctrl-1, Ctrl-2, Ctrl-3. These keys could be rebound in the NVCP to avoid game conflicts or to make them context sensitive to in-game commands or event triggers.
This would be similar to what's available with most HID software from Logitech or even in the NVCP for existing 3D stereo options.

Hi

The preset is a good idea and I understand what you want it. I will take it back to the team to work on.

Please understand these features dont just show up overnight since we do have a release planning schedule and many features on our list.

Thanks Andrew, if this works out it will be the first truly new feature added to Nvidia's 3D drivers in at least eight years. I think that's great!

Some other questions if you have the time to answer them.

1.) Are you guys planning on restoring OpenGL support to the regular(not Quadro) driver? I know that there are a lot of GREAT games based on the Doom 3 engine. Plus id software's RAGE is coming, and it would be insane not to have 3D support for one of the biggest titles of the year simply because it is OpenGL.

2.) Have you guys tried any of your competitors 3D products? I know this is probably a sin, but you guys should fire up the IZ3D driver or Tridef at least once and see that they have some really great features.

These features you guys are asking for sound nice and all but really wouldn't it be more beneficial for everyone if Nvidia made it easier for the developers to do these things themselves?

1. We have no plans to bring out an OpenGL driver right now simply because there isnt an overwhelming demand. I understand its frustrating but that's our policy.

2. Yes I have looked at their products many times. What features do you like? I can comment on them then.

Andrew i get that the company has to answer to shareholders, but can i just say rage. It looks like it will be one of the biggest games of 2011. Also having a 3d platform that has a chance of running all games will surely help bring new customers who are on the fence due to incompatibility. You have locked the tech and trying to create a monopoly out of PC 3D, i have a few friends that simple wont go with nvidia as they don't trust you, and have gone the Tridef route, and even though i didn't make that choice, I get their argument. This tech should be being pushed hard, not via advertising, but via spending money investing in improving the tech. The advertisement is done for free by users such as myself, i have more of an impact on sales, as well as all your other users, then any advertising campaign.

and also, i would love to see amnesia in 3d... oh BOY that would be horrible. Cheers for your good work in responses :-)

Hi

The details on Rage have yet to be fully released. I'm not saying it will be in 3D, but we have some options we are exploring with them.

In terms of saying we have created a monopoly - that simply isnt true. You and your friends have options and you are free to use them on your NVIDIA GPU. To say we have only invested in advertising simply isnt true. Since I have launched the product we have introduced: 3D Vision Surround, Window mode gaming, 3DTV Play, 3DVisionLive.com, added 14 new 3D Vision monitors and added tons of games. We arent sitting on our laurels over here, trust me :)

Hi Andrew thanks for the reply. :)

Totally understand these features will take time to implement but any updates on progress or ETA would be greatly appreciated. Also, I think I suggested this some time ago when you weren't as active on the forums, but ideally all of these settings and features would be rolled into the existing Nvidia Profiles.txt for specific games so all the settings and changes are in one place. I understand this would also create quite a bit more work but it seems like that would make more sense. I'd also like to see some of the 3D Vision profile settings in there along with some kind of primer detailing what the settings change. I know that's a bit of a long shot getting more visibility on 3D Vision profiles but it'd certainly give us more control in fixing specific game incompatibilities, similar to what the the AA and SLI compatibility flag tweaks do for standard 3D gaming.

Wow that's really dissapointing, but not unexpected. When you guys created 3D Vision, did you build on top of the old 3D Forceware driver or did you totally write 3DV from scratch? And if you did build on top of what you already had, why did you remove the already working OpenGL support?

As far as features go, I remembered another one that would go along way. If the users had the ability, through the registry, to alter the timing of the glasses shutter we could probably eliminate some of the ghosting that plagues LCD's. Have you guys considered opening up any of the advanced features like that?

And thanks for answering our questions.

I'm pretty sure they wrote the post-R100 drivers from scratch, which is why you see all the users who care about legacy 3D and OpenGL support clinging to their pre-8000 series cards and pre-R100 series drivers. If you remember around the time of Vista's launch in early 2007, Nvidia's driver situation was a bit of a mess with numerous complaints about no DX10 support on 8800s and no SLI support on anything in Vista for quite some time. A lot of this had to do with changes to Vista's driver stack where Nvidia basically went from 2 driver versions (DX and OpenGL) to 6 driver versions (DX9 single, DX9 SLI, DX10 single, DX10 SLI, OpenGL single, OpenGL SLI). I remember this broke Nvidia's Unified Driver Architecture releases for quite some time as there were at least 4 different versions of Nvidia drivers for each release, 32 and 64-bit versions for 5,6,7 series and 32 and 64-bit versions for 8 series and even a few versions specifically for SLI. Here's a pretty good write-up of the situation from PCPer: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=357

I also remember there were quite a few complaints about game incompatibilities introduced with the newer drivers that did not exist in the R9x drivers. Pretty much everything from R100 on was hit or miss until the R13x drivers, which were pretty stable for me using an 8800GTS, so my guess is they had to cut some features out while scrambling to get baseline support up to spec. Maybe they just never got around to putting them back in.

But ya I think the 3DV profiles and implementation was written from scratch because a lot of older legacy titles that were supported in 3D in the R9x drivers are on the 3D Vision Ready list but are not supported or do not have 3D Vision profiles with the newer 3D Vision drivers.

OpenGL support is not important to me but I can understand why there are users who would like to see support added. Personally I don't think it would be hard for Nvidia to implement 3D stereo in OpenGL titles but I've suspected for some time they are holding support back so as not to interfere with their Quadro business and 3D Vision Pro. If anyone has access to that hardware and is able to verify that older OpenGL titles work without issue that'd be pretty good confirmation. While I can understand why Nvidia would put these artificial limitations in place, I still think even limited OpenGL support for those that wanted it would be a better way to go.

Yeah, they are afraid of cutting into their precious Quadro market. Even though the number of people who use those types of applications equate to less than one tenth of a percent of the total market. And the ones that do it in 3D are even less than that. They didn't seem too concerned about it before 3D Vision launched when the OpenGL 3d driver was given away for free, am I right?

Right now I'm still combing through the 3DV dll files. The laser sight bmp's were a good start.
