Switching from ATI 6850 to nVidia 3D
  1 / 6
Just purchased ASUS VG248QE 24" 144Hz 1ms and now I want to try 3D. I'm used to playing at 1080 Anything from WoW, CS:GO, Skyrim, SimCity to BF3 etc So i'm going from a 60Hz 2ms with games jumping 20-60 FPS at 1080 with most settings on high Which version (single card) would produce decent results in 3D without changing PS? I'm hoping maybe the GTX 660 for $200 but would consider waiting to spend more if performance is bad Since im new to NVidia, I have no clue if the 670 = 660 SLI or 660ti = 680 etc. 660 good enough? 660ti worth the extra $100? what can do say avg 30fps+ at 1080? Would I cry if I only went for 30fps in 3D o.O Current system CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Power Supply GIGABYTE GA-F2A85X-UP4 FM2 AMD A85X (Hudson D4) AMD A10-5800K Trinity 3.8GHz G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1866 GIGABYTE GV-R685OC-1GD HD6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB SATA III SSD (no other HD) SB X-Fi Platinum with front panel ASUS DVD burner (System was built on a tight budget)

Thats the bad news with 3D. If you want 1080P... you need to run 1080P twice. I have no idea how good that cpu is. Most of us go intel nowadays[no offense to amd users] but CPU/GPU needs double performance. Id recommend a 680 minimum as a 1080P user to be honest. 660's sli will give yo better performance[Not to mention 3D vision was kind of built for sli] but doesnt leave room for upgrading. If you want to go an SLI route you might be able to knock a third off price by going used. I guess you got to weigh your options. Btw, check this site http://helixmod.blogspot.com/ most of the 3d vision games are here. Modded for support. And a little self-promoting... check here~! My opinion would be to go with the 660ti. It's worth the extra $100 from it's jump in cuda cores as well as clock speed, especially for stereoscopic 3d. Most games should run just fine in 3d in 1080p, with some of the more demanding AAA games needing to be run at medium, depending on your personal preference on framerate needs. Then, later on, you could get another and SLI it for a good boost.
Id recommend a 680 minimum as a 1080P user to be honest.
??!! that's kinda high for "minimum" imo. I started with 280 and then 480 @1080p single screen 3d vision, which was quite ok back then. later, 580SLI 3G (now 670s 4G) for 3D surround. for most games, a single 580 should do just fine for 1920x1080. it's not like we didn't game 3D vision before 600 series.

I run SLI 660s. You could get by with one (that's what I started with), and upgrade to SLI down the line - though be prepared to turn down a few settings with just the one. You'll still be able to run most games in 3d on "high" settings at ~40fps, just not "ultra". Though if you want a little headroom, a single 660ti or higher would be worth considering, with the aim of getting a second one in 6-12 months when prices have dropped more.

So a $200 660 can do most games ~40fps with med-high settings at 1080? or is that with rez turned down also? My current MB is Xfire ready, not SLI. And it will be many years before I can afford to replace it or any other part of system. While if a regular 660 can do 1080, med settings ~40fps I think i'd be happy. But i'm worried of lag or 10fps and kickin myself for not trying to squeeze $400 for 670 since I can't SLI ($400 and i'll be eating beans for a month)
no need to turn down res. actually, it's better to do mixed configuration: bumping some up and toning down or even turning off others. for examples, dof is virtually useless for 3d gaming, it can certainly be off; in many cases highest level texture on, with some special effect on medium or even off may be better than higher effects with medium textures. just saying, for me personally, the detailed 3D image is the decisive element for great 3d gaming experience, all other graphic bells and whistles are just bonus.

Depends on the game, but mostly yes. Older games no problem, newer/more intensive games will vary - but still mostly yes. Though if you don't have the option of going for SLI down the track, it may be better to save for something a step or two above it (the 660ti perhaps). Look up (2d) benchmarks for an idea of how the cards compare to each other, and how much each jump in performance is worth to you - but you should get by okay on a single 660 without needing to drop the res.

Just browsing for the last 3 hours, I see many people saying the 660ti is worth the extra $100... but by the charts I see a 7-10% difference. So if the 660 is doing 40fps at 1080 the 660ti is doing 44fps. At rez above 1080 it appears a larger gap. Say the 660 is doing 23fps at 1600 the 660ti is doing 32fps. But I will never go above 1080 or multi monitor. These ratings are 2d so I have no idea what they will do in 3d. So based off 1080 and single monitor, the 660ti does not seem worth $100 if I read everything correct.

Fair call, I faced the same choice when I bought my 660 (before I'd thought about SLI), and I went for the 660. It's a good card at a good price point.

Awesome. I'm actually researching for my brother, friend & myself. All 3 of us have almost identical system. And come this Friday all 3 of us will have that 144Hz 1ms 1080p monitor :D Sounds like they'll be happy to save $100 and get the 660 instead of 660ti. While I just might sell the cat and go for the 670.

Thanks for all the help :) There's no real charts for 3D vision. Just 2d charts. It's been driving me crazy! So far i'm looking at Gigabyte for 660 and 670. Not only have I been a fan of gigabyte for reliability but reading reviews of their stock OC cards, people seem to love how cool they run. Oh, and I should note that the second one I picked up died after a few days - after playing for a few minutes the display driver would crash, and when I went back to the game it would limp along at crappy framerates until I restarted. I was able to swap it for a new one pretty easily though, and I don't think they're often faulty.
