Quick AW2310 impressions
  1 / 2
My friend brought it over today to try and we compared notes.

1. Definitely not ghost free.

2. Running games at 1920x1080 is very taxing, even for my core i7 and gtx 295. You are going to need an absolute beast of a system to play smoothly, and that is not cheap.
3. No "overdrive ghosting" that I could see. This happened a lot with clouds and buildings against sky in mirror's edge on the samsung.
4. Verified with my 600fps camera that the monitor refreshes top to bottom just like the samsung does. I guess this is just how these monitors work. Top and bottom ghosting problem is by no means fixed.
5. Sometimes the Samsung actually exhibits less ghosting. For example, batman's face against the moon at the menu screen. I clearly see the outline of his cowl on the moon with the alienware monitor, but with the samsung it is very hard to see ... you see just a hint of overdrive ghosting if you look closely. It appears that the samsung aggressive approach to refresh rates pays off in some instances, but not in others.
6. The alienware performed much better in my torture test scene (mirror's edge, start of level 4 just after exiting the red door). Still pretty heavy ghosting of the orange sign, but the building to the right exhibited less ghosting and the ghosting of the black lines on the floor was diminished compared to the samsung (where it's just terrible) but still by no means perfect.

All in all, this is a minor upgrade 3d wise. The monitor appears to have better color fidelity to me overall than the Samsung, so that's another plus. But I certainly do not feel any need to upgrade from my Samsung after seeing it and putting it through its paces. Plasma and projectors hold a lot more promise as potential ghost free technologies right now.

I have to admit, for whatever reason, I see flickering on the samsung at 100hz, but on the alienware, I do not. However, at 110Hz and above I don't have issues on either screen. Flicker is something that is perceived differently by different people however, so it's going to be tough to make an objective assessment.

I'll also add that I felt the AW2310 was brighter overall, but I've had my Samsung for a year so undoubtedly it's lost some of its original brightness.

Also, the drivers using the Alienware were crashing my machine left and right. I have no idea why the monitor selection would matter, but it did, b/c when I switched back to the Samsung all the problems stopped. I assume this is something that will be dealt with quickly, however.

Thanks for the update. Think I will wait to see how the Acer performs but I am fairly certain there is going to be ghosting on that one also. I am starting to lean on waiting until I get a GF100 and then buy a new monitor.

One thing to remember Rkuo is that there isn't any offical support for the monitor from nVidia yet. Andrew did say however a driver should be out by the end of the week. This could help the situation

Played more on the Alien AW2310 last night. Still working flawlessly on 1.18 drivers.

There is ghosting in white skies but it's really not even noticeable or a distraction. It's still a god send compared to the samsung. Now for last night....

Played

Left 4 Dead - Always an impressive game but the pop out effects weren't impressive at all with the AW2310

Avatar - AMAZING... Simply amazing. If you have this monitor...buy this game.

Trackmania - It works and looks great. There's ghosting in the white sky but its very thin/faint. If your racing it's not even enough to be a distraction.

Shadowrun - Flawless...if you have this monitor buy this game. (response time is shocking)

Serious Sam II - Very little ghosting in the sky sometimes...Looks amazing with this monitor. I still standby you haven't seen 3D gaming until you have played Serious Sam II. Especially on the DLP.

I play all my games 100% depth and I play with the convergence. Scale of 1 to 10...10 being the highest I'd say my convergence for all games is up around 3-4.

What happens if you try knocking the convergence up ? does ghosting become an issue ?

Also why are there no reviews for this monitor on any websites yet ? Does Alienware (Dell) not send out review models to top sites ?

If you jack the convergence up far enough in any game it becomes an issue. /sorcerer.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':sorcerer:' />

The 27″ ASUS PG276H 3D-ready monitor is expected in late May, which is why I am holding off and not paying $499 for that extra inch of realstate that the Alienware would give me. Plus, who knows what else will pop up during the year "2010-3D".

27'' in TN is nonsence. You should know that. And if it is not TN it is gonna cost small fortune.

I will let you know the tech behind it as soon as my application for employment to Asus gets approved, but until then here's a video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1lImS8aKxs.
