8800GTX / GT Stereo? :'(

I really wouldn't worry about Vista drivers.

All the major 3D manufacturers use NVIDIA as their base driver set, and it's in everyone's interest for driver support to continue.

How would it benefit NVIDIA to turn the tap off on all the manufacturers who are promoting the NVIDIA brand with their 3D solution?

Vista may take a bit longer than the other driver components, but I can't see why support for cease.

Best wishes,
Chopper

I hope Nvidia keeps making Stereo drivers, I have been buying Nvidia since the TNT days just to use my 3d glasses. Nvidia if you don't conitune to support the 3d market people like me will have no compelling reason to buy your cards.

In any case, thanks for the support.

Is there any news about the drivers? Does anybody know a more exact date than just "spring"?(which is soon :D )

I dont really feel very good about nvidia anymore, as thier stereoscopic page still says "Works on all NVIDIA GPUs "... /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well, It is Apr. 24th. The flowers are blooming, trees are budding.. but I still have yet to see an updated stereo support driver.

I have been debating on getting some 3D glasses since a few friends of mine online have been saying that it changes the way you play a lot of games and breaths some much needed life into them.

This may be the best forum to ask this since it seems a lot of users have some goggles here. The ones I have been looking at are these:

VR920
http://www.icuiti.net/vr920.html

Sadly are only 640-480 native, but I am not sure if it matters that close to the face.
If I could get some feedback on what gear works well with most games that people have played, then once NVIDIA gets that support ready for us, I can play WOW as if I am IN the game.

Thanks. :)

Well, there have been some reports of success with a combination of the 158.19 driver and the beta stereo drivers.

Alas, the lookout for Vista is bleak, as far as I can make out.

Hunting through the XP forceware drivers reveals the "Stereo3D" string that identifies the registry key that switches the features on. It's conspicuously absent from the Vista drivers (apart from the OpenGL ICD). Despite the version number being 158.18, it's very different from the XP driver in terms of architecture (because of Vista).

Any comment from nvidia about Vista support for stereo features would be welcome.

We have 2 HMDs in the UB VR lab. The problem with them is that you have to use your head to look around, so if you have a game with alot of interraction involving your hands, it becomes impossible. I would seriously take a second look at those until them make them with a higher resolution. Even so, the ones we use cost over $1000 each...

Try an LCD Planar stereo mirror direct-view Polarizing setup:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=32547

Mine is under $300 total, and that is with 5 pairs of glasses. Dual 1280x1024 resolution :D.

If you currently have an LCD it is cheaper because you can use any LCDs, just get another.

There are pictures, it works.

What HHD's to you use in your UB VR lab? I got a good deal on ebay today for a set of z800's. I doubt these will give me an emmersive experience, but I believe it will be a satisfying 3D (and tracking) experience. Are you familiar with the Z800's? Can you comment. Thanks.

I also await new drivers for stereo, but I'm not so cutting edge that I need vista support. I run a 7800 GTX 256Mb and my next video upgrade will probably just be another one for SLI.

I can't comment on the Z800s as I am not sure the actual brand we use. I could inquire when I am in the lab again on Monday if you want, but as far as I know, the stuff we use costs about $1500-$2000, each.
