Hi GibsonRed,
My Marantz 6010 works fine with atmos in movie too.
But as I said, in game Windows switches to hdmi tv stereo device instead staying with marantz audio hdmi. I think it's because my 4k tv is plugged through the marantz via hdmi because I only have one hdmi out on my gtx1080.
Is your monitor directly plugged too your gtx or through the marantz?
I go HDMI out of my 980ti into the marantz. Then HDMI out of the marantz to my projector.
It doesn't matter what settings I have in the windows sound settings (stereo, quad, 5.1, 7.1 etc)
I then load up battlefield 1 or starwars battlefront, go to sound options and turn on Dolby atmos.
It did this weird turning on and off really fast when I first tried it but a reboot sorted it out.
Battlefield 1 sounds fucking amazing in atmos. It's the steering (panning) of the sounds. You get much more height (obviously) but much more depth to the 3D sound stage.
Maybe try a firmware update on the marantz, I also half remember reading that you must have the amp configured for atmos (on the amps configuration) and all speakers must be connected, but I don't know if that's true or not.
Make sure you have the marantz selected as the default playback device in windows sound settings (should be a tick next to it)

Yep, last firmware, Marantz is default playback but soon I launch any games, Marantz HDMI device disapear from windows sound settings and is replaced by PhilipsTV HDMI (stereo). Even so I put only AVR in audio hdmi marantz settings...
So For the moment I can't play any game in 5.1 or more via HDMI...
But it works great on movie, I'm watching right now Star Treck in Atmos and 3D. The Marants reconize Atmos without problem.
So I ordered the club3D display port to HDMI2.0 active converter to separate Audio and video, hope this works...

Just downloaded the 'Dolby access' app in the windows 10 insider program and now I have Dolby atmos available to choose in windows sound settings.
The major thing though is that every game I have tried so far is now in Dolby atmos!
This is massive. I've only just tried it and I'm not sure if it's native atmos but rocket league, tombraider and doom all outputted atmos to my receiver and sounded awesome.
How is this possible? I know Windows has a Dolby license but does this mean they have a software atmos encoder?
Is it taking the positional audio or is it using some direct X API to talk directly with the game engine???
This is a big thing for me. Star Wars battlefront and Battlefield 1 are the only games with native atmos support that I'm aware of.
Looks like the update is on the Xbox too. Just downloading it now.
Anyway, if you have a Dolby atmos decoder/receiver/amp/prepro etc then check it out.
I hope they add a Dolby atmos decoder so I can go back to using professional soundcards for atmos instead of these preprocessors and Nvidias noisy ass built in soundcards!

Too bad it's not available on W7 :(
I was contemplating getting an Atmos capable AVR or perhaps trying this extractor with my current receiver.
http://www.kanexpro.com/item/?id=HAECOAX3 edit: Atmos is only on passthrough
I also saw on AVSforums that you can use an identical second AVR to get additional height channels. I didn't read into it very much, so I can't comment on it. But, it would seem to me, that they could not be individualized channels. Or perhaps they are?
And fuck AVR manufacturers for not including a Display Port input/output :P

I tried Watch Dogs 2 and The Witcher and thus my Marantz AVR recognized Atmos from PC via those games, Absolutely no sound came from the above 4 Height Speakers in these games ( ok there is no planes in the witcher but in Watch Dogs 2, I called the police helicopter and I had no sound from above, no ambiance sound, nada). Movies works fine.
Are you sure you have sounds from above height speakers in TR, Rocket League and Doom?

It doesn't seem to be working for me either, I've tried Alien Isolation and Doom but I'm not getting any sound coming from the height speakers. Movies with the supported audio format work no problem though.

I think you are right. I did a test to night and I don't appear to have any sound coming from the height speakers.
The AVR receives a Dolby atmos input and syncs but I think it's just 7.1 or whatever the game supports.
I've also noticed that it stops me selecting 'pure direct' model on the AVR when I'm listening to music in iTunes.
I watched a video with a Microsoft engineer and someone from Dolby at a conference less than 2 weeks ago talking about how it works.
I really hope this takes off. If we could get the games sounding like the films it would be amazing.

Yep, the AVR is forced to Dolby Atmos whatever is received (except for direct non decoded HDMI output option in powerDvd for example).
To have Atmos in game, the game sound engine have to evolved be 3D sound ready (Atmos, DTS-X, Auro 3D), like in BF1 and SW battlefront audio engine. I can't wait for that.
I'm currently mixing an ambient glitch electronic music Band ( TRDLX) in Auro 3D 5.1.4 in Reaper, it's awesome!
For now, in game non atmos ready, the best we can have is the upmixing Atmos or DTS Neural-X by our AVR.

This is the video I watched with explains how it works and what game developers need to do to implement it.
Sounds promising, I really want it to take off in the gaming world. After watching so many films with atmos, it'll be hard to go back to 7.1!

Hey,
this is not an Atmos related question, but since there are many people here used to complex audio routing systems. Maybe someone here can help me.
I'm trying to get video through either DVI or DisplayPort, while simultaneously using an hdmi 5.1 amp for audio.
I do not want a separate extended desktop (don't want to loose windows and apps on non existant display.) So I must use cloned mode.
Unfortunately, cloning fails because resolutions are not compatible :
I have 2 different situations :
-> video on the monitor : 1920x1200 (16:10 ratio)
-> video on dual-projector system : 3840x1080 (Full Side-by-side 3D, Tridef mode) or 1920x1080 120Hz (Frame sequential 3D Vision mode)
As long as the hdmi Amp is active, the NVidia control panel won't let me select 1920x1200 or 3840x1080 resolutions. It looks like scaling does not work when using cloned display.
At the moment, I am using an old Xonar DX card with Dolby Digital Live function to output 5.1 through optical SPDIF, but I would really want to be able to use the Hdmi out for audio.
Any ideas ?

AFAIK, no one has found a work around.
People using DSR with an AVR run into the same issue.
Using Optical out, you only lose lossless when playing back Blu-rays.
Monoprice has an audio extracter made by BlackBird that works up to 4K@30(no atmos), it might offer enough bandwidth for you if you have analog inputs on your receiver. But I've no idea if it would add any frame delay and bork your system. I'm not sure if there's a way for you to even shoe horn it in your chain, maybe just before the projector and then use a port saver? Still just the additional port saver may likely bork your frames?
There was a thread in Driver fedback, that did not gain much traction, asking for an option to designate the HDMI out as audio exclusive. An Nvidia employee popped in and said it sounded like a geat idea (SteveK I think), and that he would pass it along to the driver team. That was over a year ago, so not looking good.

The Nvidia employee was NVGareth, who is apparently not with them anymore because his profile is no longer green

I don't have the insider/atmos addon. I just heard about it this morning. Is it just a headphone simulation like what Overwatch has? That would be cool for some people if it's allowing them to use headphones in BF1 and Battlefront with Atmos.
I found this so far, (it's kind of old):

Chtiblue,
I noticed you have Atmos too. I was playing around with my the other day and I noticed Battlefield and Battlefront are sampled at 48khz when in Atmos. Is it like that on your receiver? I want to see if it's like that when I turn Atmos off.

Yes Atmos and others (DTS/Dolby) are 48 khz sampled, it's enough ;)
192 khz is needed only when you record foley/FX for sound design so records could be pitch down or up witj maximum resolution.
