SLI - Poor framerates even with 3D off
I just installed a second GTX570 last night, so this is my first time using NVIDIA's multi-GPU solution.

I remember the whole mess concerning 3D Vision in The Witcher 2 when it came out, where you had to totally disable or uninstall 3D Vision or else you'd get bad framerates, then they finally fixed it in a patch. Well, the first thing I did after installing the second GTX570 was load up TW2, and saw both GPU Usage charts at 99%, so I'm thinking "Great - they're both being fully used!".... until I realized I was getting the same FPS that I used to with a single GTX570, about 45 FPS. Enabling 3D Vision only dropped the framerate to 40 FPS, so obviously both GPU's were being used correctly in 3D mode (although the shadows were messed up, even with latest patch), but when I disabled 3D Vision again the framerate only went back up to 45.

So I did a little test by disabling 3D Vision completely, re-launching TW2, and lo and behold I was getting 75+ FPS and it was super-smooth.

So, this tells me that when 3D Vision is enabled but turned off, it's still rendering Left Eye and Right Eye frames in the background wasting GPU time.

Are all games like this ?

If so, what's the point of buying an extra GPU if the framerate won't increase when 3D Vision is installed but not being used ?

Yes this is a known issue, when 3D Vision is enabled, the SLI profile is optimized for maximum performance in 3D. When its disabled, SLI is optimized for maximum AFR 2D performance. An easy way to get around this is to go to Start > Nvidia Corporation > 3D Vision and drag the two shortcuts to Enable/Disable 3D Vision to your desktop. This bypasses opening up the NVCP each time and is very/fast responsive/reliable way to turn off 3D Vision and get full performance in SLI when not using 3D Vision.

Ideally Nvidia allows us to specify 3D Vision in the Manage 3D settings profile, but for now the 3D Vision and standard 3D Settings are kept separate.

So you have to choose which one you want?

I like loading up a game, playing for a while in 2D, then enabling 3D vision whenever I feel like it for a few minutes, then turning it back off and continuing in 2D. Now that I installed a second GTX570 I have to save and exit the game each time ?

Or is this only for The Witcher 2 ?

Yes you have to.
It makes no difference if you use a single or SLI system.

That is based on the drivers - 3D-Vision is linked really strong into the rendering-process. So if you disable 3D-Vision with the emitter-button or Ctrl+T, the driver still does calculations for the second image. The rendering process must be terminated completely, so that 3D-Vision can be linked out of the rendering. Otherwise 3D-Vision wouldn't be as "fast" as it is. Just compare with Iz3D or Tridef - they will not get better framerates as 3D-Vision does.

When you say it doesn't matter whether you're using SLI or not, that's not correct.

On my single GTX570 I got full performance when Stereo3D was enabled but turned off (ctrl+t), and now that there's two GTX570's I'm only getting HALF performance when 3D is enabled but turned off, yet both GPU's are being fully loaded (like they're calculating left/right eye images and then discarding them), and wasting power.

When I exit, disable 3D, and re-launch the game, I'm getting full performance (2x 99% load, double framerate)

What I want is to be able to just leave 3D enabled like I always used to, and just pop in and out of 3D whenever I feel like it with ctrl+t

Yes you have to choose which one you want prior to loading the game, much like any of the more advanced driver features (AA, AO, AF, SLI etc.). The SLI profiles are optimized for either 2D AFR or 3D Vision, so you can have either max 2D performance or max 3D performance, but not both while 3D Vision is enabled. Its like flipping a train track switch. If you're familiar at all with SLI AA, its very similar to how that works from what I've observed as each GPU is tasked to render a different version of the same frame no matter what, negating any potential speed-up from SLI. You can still pop in and out of 3D but you will only get ~1xGPU performance while 3D Vision is enabled.

Exactly, that's my problem. I used to pop in and out of 3D whenever I felt like it with a single GPU, and got full performance when not using 3D. Now if I do that, I'll only get half performance.

Now, I just realized another problem, and this one is even bigger - if I have to disable Stereo3D to get the full performance of my SLI GTX570's, how am I supposed to force games to use 120hz ? That's one of the main reasons I left 3D enabled - it allowed you to specify 120hz to be forced for all 3D applications. Now, I just realized that Crysis sets the monitor to 50hz (!) when 3DVision is disabled

This just isn't acceptable to me. Things worked fine with one GPU, now with the second it's like I have to pick and choose what features I want, and I want them all.

Let me ask you, did you buy a 2nd GTX 570 for 2D? Or did you buy it for 3D? You can still get maximum 2D performance, just not while 3D is enabled. Its an either/or situation, not both.

Just force Vsync in either the NVCP for the game profile or in the game itself. If Crysis sets it to 50Hz, just set it to 120Hz in the options.

Well, unfortunately that's not possible for the reasons already stated. You can have either best possible 3D performance, or best possible 2D performance, but not both simultaneously. The solution is simple though, just turn 3D Vision on or off as needed and restart the game. Its like if you had 2 HDDs and had to choose between RAID 0 or RAID 1. The purpose of the two modes are fundamentally different so you have to choose which you prefer, but at least with 3D the change is non-permanent and can be easily reconfigured.

2.) Sure, kindly tell me how to do that and I would consider this problem solved. Unfortunately, that option is grayed out whether I have Stereo3D enabled or not, and will not let me change the setting on the global 3D settings page OR the application-specific profiles page.

You couldn't have, but the only solution for your needs is to buy a faster single GPU. GTX 580 isn't going to be worth it at this point, so you'll most likely have to wait until Kepler.

Vsync shouldn't be locked in the NVCP for any game, but if it is you can enable it in the Crysis console by hitting tilde ` and typing: r_Vsync 1

More detail here: http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_8.html

For refresh rate, you can set it in the Nvidia control panel either under "Change Resolution" or under "Setup stereoscopic 3D" and hit the "Test Stereoscopic 3D button". Choose 120Hz if it isn't already. I just double checked and Crysis can definitely get 120FPS but its still an extremely demanding game so you may only get 50-60FPS if you have everything set to Very High with AA enabled.

I never mentioned vsync, I always have that enabled as I hate tearing.

As for refresh rate, did you read what I wrote above that you quoted, starting with "Now, I just realized another problem, and this one is even bigger" ?
When I disable Stereo3D I lose the "Test Stereoscopic 3D" --> 120hz tweak. That's why I'm upset - it seems that with SLI I have to choose between fast Stereo3D, or Fast SLI but no 120hz lock.

Anyway, I did some tweaking with nhancer and did find a way to supposedly lock 120hz, (see here) - however I'm sure you'll agree that this shouldn't be necessary; there should be a very easy way to lock 120hz in the NVCP without using the Stereo3D Test tweak, or nhancer.

Thank you for trying to help me though, I do appreciate your responses.

Bear in mind that there is no real 100% 'by design' way of locking 120Hz. If you were using the nvidia panel for that, then it was just a side effect of the 3d settings.
I game in 2d and 3d and have SLI as well. All I can really do is set my desktop to 120hz and adjust each game individually, as required. That's not directly related to either 3D or SLI.
