3D Vision 2 Kit on Alienware M11x R2
  1 / 2
I have the Nvidia 3D Vision 2 Kit hooked up, the latest drivers installed and I am even using a DELL Bizlink Adapter that is hooked up to my Alienware 3D monitor through DVI at 120hz but even though I am clicking the Enable 3D option under the start menu I can't get it to work. I've seem forum posts where others have used this method and had success, any help or suggestions?

You need to set the external display as your primary monitor. You can not use Vista after driver 313. The output port from the laptop must be directly off of the discrete Nvidia GPU. The Display must be 3D vision certified.

My first response with these issues is normally "Your adapter isn't Dual-Link" but that Dell Bizlink Adapter seems to support it fine. Have you done a clean driver installation? Sometimes things get a bit odd. I reckon you would have done so already, but make sure the external display is the primary display. Also, disregard the shortcuts in the start menu, go directly into Nvidia settings by right clicking the desktop and opening the control panel.

Ok thanks everyone, I've tried setting it to the primary display, and for some reason when I went into the Nvidia control panel the stereoscopic 3D vision option isnt on the left. I've read in other forums that the problem is that the M11x is a dual-card system managed by the Optimus technology and the 3D vision driver is only recognizing the IntelHD. There must be a way around this because I've heard of others having success in doing so but I can't seem to find anywhere how they did it, any suggestions?

Here is the link to the forum where a user at the very bottom of the post got it to work, but he hasn't replied to my question regarding how because it is rather old. http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/636051-nvidia-m11x-r2-nvidia-vision-solution.html

Unfortunately your solution will not WORK. As you can see in the pic provided by you the only connector DIRECTLY hooked to your GPU is the VGA one and NOT the DP which is connected to the Intel One. So the Intel chipset acts as a router in which case this is why the GPU doesn't see the monitor as 3D Vision Ready. The only way to go would be to buy a DL-DVI to VGA adapter..BUT I don't think it will work since the VGA is an analogue signal while the DVI is a digital one. This means your monitor will work for standard 2D but not 3D. Sadly there is no way that I know of (and hardware wise impossible) to fool the GT to believe the monitor is directly connected to it. It is possible the other guys from that post to have a different motherboard / version of the M1X/R2 laptop. (Not all are the same based on the configuration you chose when you buy it). I am sorry this doesn't help you more. Other solution would be to use Tridef if your monitor supports it.

Since the VGA is connected to your Nvidia GPU, you might opt for a 3D Vision certified projector.

I would but the weird part about it is that it says it's connected to the VGA port but there isn't one on my laptop. The other solution I was thinking of was trying to use an external graphics card by connecting it to where my wifi card is plugged in on my laptop.

Now that I think about it and there are 3D Vision Ready projectors, I wonder is a DL-DVI to VGA converter would make a 3D Vision Monitor work.... Tridef is a totally different solution than 3D Vision and is mostly used with 3D TVs. You will be required to use the TVs glasses and not the 3D Vision kit. You would be able to connect your TV to the VGA port or HDMI I believe. In order to use the 3D Vision Kit you need to connect a monitor or projector (like D-Man11 said) directly to the nvidia GPU (on the VGA port) there is no other way around it.

A damn... so there is a connector on the mobo but you don't have the connector exposed basically..damn... Can you hook an external GTX card to your laptop?
