Is there a future for 3D Vision? (the hardware version)
  1 / 9
I'm sure everybody here on the forums already know that 3D Vision would be dead already if not for the contributions of a handful of people of this amazing community. You know who you are, and I've showed my appreciation and support many times, I am constantly in awe of your talents and selfless dedication to 3D gaming. What I'm worried about now is the hardware part. Here is a loose sequence of occurrences that I've experienced recently: 1. I badly wanted to have a 3D laptop with the new nVidia cards. They would have driven 3D Vision superbly, the time was just right. 3D LAPTOPS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. 2. I have an Asus VG278HR, and at some point I started to become paranoid and imagine what would happen if it got broken. So I starting contemplating maybe buying a spare one. THIS PERFECT SCREEN IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE 3. I thought I would give in and go with a ROG Swift although I find the pixel density not fit for 3D Vision. SLI STILL NOT WORKING, AND WITH REPORTEDLY WORSE CROSSTALK THAN MY OLD ASUS. 4. Today I read this article about upcoming top-of-the-line Asus screens: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/asus-rog-swift-displays,30292.html. One is 165Hz IPS, the other only 60Hz. Of course, both have G-sync. OF COURSE, NEITHER WILL SUPPORT 3D VISION (even if by some miracle the IPS one supports 3D Vision, it has 4ms response time, I don't know how that would work in gaming. And it still has the issue of having too many pixels to push, so if SLI is still broken, not feasible for 3D Vision) Maybe some of you have contacts at Nvidia or elsewhere within the industry. Providing that Nvidia itself does not start neutering their cards to not have 3D Vision somehow, any idea if there will be any hardware (monitors/emitters) to use with 3D Vision in the future? Thanks

The same is with every other technology;) VR will come and go as well;) only to appear again later on;) As with laptops, I got lucky to be able to buy my Alienware m17x last September with a 3D Screen. 3 months later they stopped being produced. I looked at the panel information and is a Samsung 3D Screen that was manufactured in 09/2012 (I bought the Laptop in 09/2014). So, most likely the panels are not being produced.

I think unless NVidia starts investing funds into 3D again, 3D Vision is definitely going to die off at some point down the line, and I can't see NVidia making a big effort in this area again seeing as it didn't really take off last time. The only thing keeping it viable right now is blind luck and the dedicated people in the community who are doing the work that developers and NVidia could/should be doing. Devs have zero reason or incentive to support 3D any more unless they have an interest in it themselves. I'll be keeping my ROG SWIFT for 3D (even though it's turned out to be a disaster so far) but my next monitor will either be the Asus or Acer 34" ultrawide, whichever happens to be available in the UK first. I also have a 3D projector but I can't use it properly in my new house so I'll be selling it soon. It's a shame because it's amazing, but long throw projectors are bad for short rooms :-( The best I can hope for long-term is that my 4k 8200 Samsung 3D TV is compatible with 3D TV Play, but last time I tried it, it wasn't detected.

Hi Helifax I was talking about my Asus, the model with integrated emitter. That's gone forever, apparently, for some insanely stupid reason. And of course, all technology stops being produced at some point, but if it's not within my lifetime , I don't really care. I was talking about the foreseeable future, and the technology/commercial logic up to now was that one technology dies off to leave the place to another better technology. But what happens with 3D Vision really shocks me. So gaming in 3D is replaced by gaming in ... 2D? I was expecting 4D, or holodeck or whatever. This is insane! Foulplay99 That's exactly what I mean when I say I'm getting paranoid. How can you say you hope "long-term" a particular 3D TV will work with TV Play? As far as I know, there are no 3D TV being produced any more. Stereovision, at least in a movies/console/livingroom context is really dead and buried. Contrary to 3D Vision, that really never took off. Anyway, you guys (and a lot of other users on this forums) seem ok with playing in 2D. I cannot do that. And I cannot find another hobby that stimulates your mind and makes you dream the same way games do. Games are like books/music/movies fused up into a supreme art form, and gaming in 3D Vision cannot compare to anything I've ever experienced. This is why I'm really worried. I will need to decide if I just order one of the Asus screens without integrated emitter, plus a separated kit (which is 220 eur! on Amazon France, plus they don't deliver in Belgium). just to have a back up in case my setup dies. But still ... will we still be playing games in 3D Vision 5 years from now, when all our screens are busted and no new ones support it? Especially if VR is a lesser experience or doesn't take off.

@Zappologist: I am not ok with playing in 2D. Otherwise I wouldn't spend insane amount of time trying to fix games to work in 3D;) I am sure a lot of people who are developing fixes are in the same boat;) (There is also the passion for doing new things involved, true;)) ) When I lived in Belgium I made all my orders from the Netherlands. Most of the shops had zero transport fees;) I would recommend buying from NL rather then FR. Look here: https://www.cdromland.nl/product/1185/951279/3D-Accessoires/Nvidia-3D-Vision-2-Kit 160 Euros;) I used that site before and they are reliable;) and ofc they do bring you the stuff in BE:) Hope this helps;)

Three days ago, a friend of mine came to my house to see 3D Vision 2 for the first time. He said "Whoa! This is the future". I gave him a sad look and told him that the last 3D Vision 2 monitor was the Asus PG278Q and that there aren't any future monitors with it in plans, unless the Acer Z35 surprisingly has it or something. For me 3D is essential now, and my only idea of an upgrade would be buying 2 more monitors like mine. My friend may buy one XL2411Z someday, he said. He really liked 3D and blur reduction.

All the high end Samsung and LG TVs still support 3D and you can use the Acer HR274H 3D Monitor EDID Override. I currently use the above on both my Samsung 3DTVs. NVidia added 3D support for direct X12 in the latest drivers. 3D support is not as robust as was three years ago but I still have a ton of games in my backlog.
4. Today I read this article about upcoming top-of-the-line Asus screens: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/asus-rog-swift-displays,30292.html. One is 165Hz IPS, the other only 60Hz. Of course, both have G-sync. OF COURSE, NEITHER WILL SUPPORT 3D VISION
I was also very concerned by this and thought of posting this right here but forgot in the end after my day of work... I LOVE 3D and it would suck hard having to return to 2D. nVidia is reading here to monitor not our wishes but for moderation purpose but I hope they would care too about our feelings. Pretty sure everyone here would instantly buy a 3rd revision of 3D Vision if it was announced.

The future is looking more grim than I imagined I expected 144hz g-sync monitors with 3D-vision to keep being produced. I have difficulty deciding on a replacement for my ASUS VG278H as it covers much ground. I can use it with my PS3 the only 3D console I know of and to play 3D movies through PS3. Having trouble with PowerDVD in W10 resulting in no 3D at all.

To have a critical piece of code that everyone can enjoy!
What more can you ask for?

Recently i've bought my third pair of glasses(second emitter) and i still keep one old gen LG monitor. My current Asus with the built in emitter is no-brainer for console gaming as well. I'd be in a dead end if it fail. I can only hope for Asus to release some new 3D model.

I preview a future with many people playing "abandonware" 3D games with obsolete nvidia drivers supporting them. In my case I have just installed Skyrim again, and I am having a lot of fun. There are plenty of games I have not explored so far, so if Nvidia stops supporting 3D I have still a couple of decades to have fun (without spending a single euro more in hardware, and that is something important to have present). As always, we have to look at things from different perspectives. I have still my old Samsung 2233RZ monitor, and I still do not find a good reason to move to another monitor (well, the truth is that I have not seen another to compare). I also have an old single MSI 660 TI, and waiting prices to lower to buy another one more powerfull. If that does not happend I do not worry, I can play games decently in 3D, and as I said before, there are plenty of older games I have not even installed on my hard drive anytime, so...

I also have an old single MSI 660 TI, and waiting prices to lower to buy another one more powerfull. If that does not happend I do not worry, I can play games decently in 3D, and as I said before, there are plenty of older games I have not even installed on my hard drive anytime, so...

- Windows 7 64bits (SSD OCZ-Vertez2 128Gb)
- "ASUS P6X58D-E" motherboard
- "MSI GTX 660 TI"
- "Intel Xeon X5670" @4000MHz CPU (20.0[12-25]x200MHz)
- RAM 16 Gb DDR3 1600
- "Dell S2716DG" monitor (2560x1440 @144Hz)
- "Corsair Carbide 600C" case
- Labrador dog (cinnamon edition)
All the high end Samsung and LG TVs still support 3D and you can use the Acer HR274H 3D Monitor EDID Override. The 4K 3D timing is different (Samsung supports full-frame 3840x2160@24fps, while LG supports interlaced 3840x2160@60fps). What display modes are supported with your EDID-modified Samsung (versus LG - see https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/818183/3d-vision/gtx-970-4k-3d-vision-gaming-success-with-lgub850v-passive-tv-/post/4693711/#4693711)? By the way, the LG passive 4K EDID mod is not the standard 2K Acer HR274H mod. By the way, I thought your suggestion to buy second SSD and clone original SSD, for Windows 10 testing, was a great idea!
