The A2A 3D lights redux does not fix the problem. Essentially any effect in FSX is rendered in 2D, so the 3D engine never has a chance to manipulate them.

I have exactly the same problem. I can start FSX, choose a plane and scenery and fly. As soon as i wanna end the flight, or go to flightplanner or settings, i get a black screen (i can move the mouse over it though). But other than quitting the game via Task Manager there is not much i can do. Any help really appreciated.

What I do is, before hitting "ESC" button, press "Alt+Enter"... this puts it into windowed mode. Then press ESC, and click "end flight".
