Got new rig w 1080gtx (no dvi) and old Asus vg278 monitor with only hdmi and DVI. so how do I go about connecting my 10xx gen Nvidia card to my VG278 and maintaining 3d? I'm looking at DP to DVI converters on Amazon, and they seem to list a max of 60hz at 1080p. Solutions?
Would an hdmi 2.0 cable work on this monitor, and be able to do 120hz/3d in full rez?
Thanks for any help!

There's info about using DP to DVI adapters at the link below and since there's no DVI out I'm guessing you'll want to scroll down to the "PART I.1 - LAPTOPS ONLY!!" section...

All 1080s have a DVI port AFAIK, please would you post pictures of your connections? Thank you, I find this interesting!
For DVI 120Hz Stereo3D Monitor, you need Dual Link DVI AFAIK. I don't believe DP is capable of outputting Dual Link as it physically lacks the number of pins. You might be able to use an active adapter to convert the bandwidth from DP to dual link DVI, but that might add lag, manifesting itself as ghosting on your screen when in 3D.

I'm a friggin idiot... the dvi port was behind a metal "flap" that came on my computer, that wasn't obvious before... Oh man, sorry to waste everyone's time. I had "verified" that dvi was missing on 1080s by a cursory google search, and some articles seemed to confirm it, but I glanced over them and interpreted them wrong.
Anyway, got Tomb Raider up and running in glorious full 3d and it's frigging phenomenal!! Can't believe I went so long without going back to 3d. Now the hard part will be going back to games without it :-(
Thanks so much to this community for keeping 3d alive!

Why go back to games without it when there's so many games with it!? :)

I also have an ASUS VG278 monitor and am getting an ASUS ROG GTX1080 Strix Gaming OC card next week. I am curious if I can use HDMi to get 3D and 120Hz or does the monitor not support it. I have set up my rig in my lounge room and the DVI-D DL that came with the monitor is only 1.5m long. When trying other, longer DVI-D DL cables (2m, 3m), as soon as I enable Stereoscopic 3D, I get a big error saying I have to "Use the DVI-D DL Cable that shipped with the monitor"
I have a 5m gold plated heavy duty HDMi cable and it would be convenient to use that in the new card as the case can be moved further away from the monitor.
I can't seem to find any information about the VG278 and HDMi2.0, only later models like the VG278H & the VG278HE appear for me on google, and mine is just the VG278.

Network Specs:
iiNet N.B.N. 100mbps Download/40Mbps Upload with Unlimited Data. (Slow in world standards, but the fastest and priciest connection in Australia), with an ASUS PCE-AC68U Wifi Card/ASUS RT-AC68U Router, 5Ghz/2.4Ghz Dual-Band WiFi My PC is connected to the 5Ghz Wifi, and my Guest Wifi is the 2.4Ghz band.
The VG278 does not have HDMI 2.0.
It does however have an integrated emitter that allows HDMI 1.4 content to be used. But this is not available on the first product run of this monitor and was added in during later production runs. So if you have a newer version, you can use the HDMI input for 3DTV Play access to the Nvidia drivers. 3DTV Play is 720P@60 or 1080@24.
When buying Dual Link DVI cables, "you must" make sure that you buy the high bandwidth version, capable of High Speed Digital Transmission to 9.9Gbps.
Single Link maxed out at 3.96Gbps which was only capable of 60Hz at 1440x900. When Dual Link first came out, it allowed 1920x1200@60 or 1080@85. You probably bought a cable that was made for this version, they are quite common.

I believe I have the first iteration of the VG278, as it has the built in emitter and has no H or HE at the end of the model number. When I tried HDMI on my old GTX970 before RMAing it due to a faulty set of ports I could not get 3D and could not get past 60hz. The GTX970 also has HDMi 1.4 I need a longer DVI-D DL cable than 1.5m to properly seperate my monitor from the rig as it is a lounge pc. and acts as my TV, 3D 5.1 home theater and entertainment system.
At some point in the future I plan on getting a 120HZ projector (hopefully a 4K one) with a retractable screen, mount my speakers to the walls and go from home theater to home cinema, but that will be some time away as I broke the bank getting the funds together for the GTX1080 I am getting next week.
I will look into getting a 5m DVI-D DL cable and make sure to tell the store I want a 9,9Gbps one. Thanks for your advice. Much appreciated.
Would this monitor and 3D work on Display port is is the only option for 120Hz and 3D a 9.9Gbps DVI-D DL?

AFAIK, none of the Asus VG278 model have a display port in, so Diual Link DVI is the only option. If yours has DP, I'd recommend using it and buying only a cable from Accell. Or go to the DP site and check to see if there are any other certified vendors that have been tested.
