Trying to decide between TV or Monitor
I am trying to decide between picking up a Planar SA2311W or a Vizio E3D320VX for use with 3D Vision. I am hesitant to pick up another monitor as I already have a 30" Dell LCD as my main display, but through reading on here I kind of get the impression that I will be happier with the performance of a good Monitor vs a TV. On the flips side I already have a 32" TV, it just isn't 3D capable. My current setup is a i7-950 & a GTX 460.

So I am little lost at which way to go. I will use the setup for a mix of 3D gaming and watching BluRay. I have a PS3 so it would be nice to use that for the 3D BluRay movies as well, but I assume since the Planar has a HDMI input it could be used for the PS3 (with audio going though something else). I do like the though of the extra screen size of the TV, in fact I may move up to the 42" E3D420VX if I go the TV route. The monitors do add the option of Surround gaming, but that would require the addition of 2 more displays, and probably a GPU upgrade.

Appreciate and opinions on the options.

This is a total no brainer. Even more then 2D, 3D is about immersion and immersion is size. True for gaming, true for Blu Ray, true for everything except news and weather. I take that back, even those progs are better big. Get a Samsung 3DTV and 3D game in native resolution.
I got my first HDTV for computer display in 2007, a 55". Now, I'v got a 63" plasma and I wish it was bigger. I can't imagine going back to a 23" screen.

The Planar does not support HDMI 1.4a, so you can't use it with PS3 for 3D. An HDTV is bigger, but lower quality. You can only play games in 720P, plus that Vizio is interleaved, so resolution is additionally cut in half. Maybe a better option would be the Acer HN274H 27" monitor. It supports HDMI 1.4a, so you can use PS3, Blu-Ray players, etc. It also supports the 3D Vision driver for full quality 1080P gaming at 60Hz. If you can find it, it retails for around $700 but includes the glasses. Very nice kit.

Exactly, Vizio vs Acer is the classic quality vs quantity trade off. Better still, get the best of both worlds with a full sized display and native resolution 3D gaming on a Samsung. Why settle for one or the other when you can have both?

I have been looking for a HN274H but they seem to be few and far between, plus the fact they came and went so fast makes me a little leery. I should add that the TV will be on my computer desk so I don't really so that is why the 32 Vizio peaked my interest. The current 32" LCD TV acts as a second monitor for main PC, TV for Xbox 360/PS3, and Monitor for extra PC's as needed. The 40" Samsung UN40D6420UFXZA is only ~ 6" wider them my current 32" TV so I will have to measure and see if it will fit, but the 32" is almost to big as it is based on how far away I am sitting.

You definitely don't want D6429 Samsung, it doesn't do native rez.

By native rez I assume you mean since it is interleave each eye is only seeing 540p. I am sure there is a visible difference, but I know from watching things on a smaller tv that my perceived difference between 720p and 1080p is much less then when I have seen the same comparison on larger (55+) TV's. Granted sitting closer the the tv can negate the TV being smaller. Ugh.... All this started for me when looking for a new laptop and seeing the Toshiba A655-3D, almost tempted to just go order a laptop or a Vision kit and monitor and call it good for now and hope more 32" TV options come out later in the year.

Checkerboard is not 540P. Technically, checkerboard is 960x1080 per field/image which is 1920x1080 per frame (1 frame = 1 L + 1 R image). You are seeing two 960x1080 images which compose one 1920x1080 frame.
People who have never seen checkerboard incorrectly assume there's a 'big difference' between 1x 1920x1080 vs 2x 1920x1080 per frame 3D, but there's not. In fact, people who have eyewitnessed both claim they are virtually indistinguishable. You give up nothing by getting full framerate gaming.

Thanks, that was really helpful, definitely helping me not toss $ in the trash. Just have a few questions for clarification. So looking at the list of Samsung TVs that are on the list that are 40-46, I went and search to find what was still for sale. Based on your comment of "You definitely don't want D6429 Samsung, it doesn't do native rez." I assume that I need to stick with the Samsung TV's that are 240hz, as some I looked up on the list were just 120hz, is this correct?

Are the issues the same if you moved from a LCD to a DLP, such as some of the Mitsu models.

Seeing that every thing that will work well is 40+ and what I was looking for was 32-40 I may change my plans and look for something to replace our living room TV and go with something larger. I am still tempted to order a LCD Monitor and Vision glasses just for PC games (still think a laptop would be cool but don't like being locked into a GPU) so I have something in my office as I spend a bit of time there when I need to get a way from the rest of the house hold.
