No luck with 91.31 drivers Becomes unstable after a while.
More than once I have tried to upgrade from 78.01 driver/stereo, which works fine on my machine (AMD64 3200+, 6600 LE, Edimensional wired glasses, DirectX 9.0c). I have followed all the recommendations - uninstalled, run driver cleaner, installed new drivers in safe mode, disabled antivirus, etc. The new setup works for a while, then after a few hours crashes every time I try to run anything in stereo mode. Screensavers, games, Stereo Photomaker, and even the Nvidia stereo test app will crash the machine, causing instant reboot. It's strange that it works at first. Luckily, thanks to Roxio GoBack (now owned by Norton) everything can be put back as it was.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

TIA,
Ed.

Is the crash triggered by running anything which uses OpenGL?
After your computer reboots, can you run stereo apps again?

I've not tried anything using OpenGL; and no, stereo doesn't work after the reboot. In fact, I got so sick of it rebooting every time I tried ANY stereo app, that the GoBack revert button was the only resort.

The only thing I can think of that was changed was to set 'Enabled by Hotkey' instead of permanently on in NV control panel. The hotkey works fine with 78.01.

I allways set it on "Enable" and I can turn 3D off and on again with the hotkey.
I only have a crash if the firewall blocks a program/service (popup) while playing.

Are you running anything like Rivatune or nHancer in the background? Have you tried getting all your TSRs out of memory?

Temporarily clean out your startup sequence just to make sure something isn't interrupting the stereo driver.

For example, I found the triple buffering utility in Rivatuner had unpredictable results with some games.

Chopper

Thanks for suggestions, but I'm not using any enhancements. The video setup is 'straight out of the box'. as it were.

Something about your post struck me. In particular, why would your system work well for a few hours, crash, and then never quite recover?

Does your recovery to an earlier state let the stereo work again for a few hours?

I'm wondering if you are having an overheating problem, and that is what is creating the instability.

Are you over-clocking anything? After your computer reboots, have your tried letting your computer shut off for 20 minutes before trying again?

Have you tried under-clocking your card - just to rule it out?

Along a similar vein, what are you playing on the card and what are the specs?

6600 LE might be your problem, I had one and it wasn't specced better than a 6200, the RAM was terrible and the clocks were worse. Also if it happens to be an AGP card the AGP -> PCI-E chip can get really really hot.

I might suggest that real PCI-E 6600GT and a PCI-E nForce4 motherboard can be had for $100-$120 total (board $50, card $50-60), I bought a 6600GT on eBay last year for $63, and a nForce4 Socket 939 motherboard from compgeeks.com for $50.

The Athlon64 and your RAM can be re-used (I hope you don't mean socket 754, although since the Memory controller is embedded in the CPU there are nForce4 chipset boards for Socket 754, 939 and AM2), you can even sell the old board and video card and get some money back for the upgrade.

Of course at this time an AM2 motherboard is the same price and AM2 Processors are available from $45 so an AM2 upgrade would be recommended, especially if you need RAM too (IE you are currently running 1GB or less), since DDR2 is cheaper than DDR.

The problems with staying with AGP are many, seeing how an AGP card that is any good usually has a price difference that would allow you an upgrade to a PCI-E motherboard and a comparable PCI-E card.

You don't mention what all the exact specs are, AGP or PCI-E? Socket 754, 939 or AM2 (I am guessing 754 or 939), the chipset can be very important, VIA/ATI minimum, nForce preferably, I wouldn't go SiS (If it is AGP you might need the latest AGP drivers, on my old SiS I had to install the latest driver manually as the install program installed old drivers even though it included the latest in a folder with the driver package /no.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ). The card specs too, DDR, DDR2, or GDDR3 RAM? Again just guessing, but I think the 6600LE isn't really very good memory probably DDR2 MAX and with very slow Memory clocks. Core clocks, memory bus bandwidth (like I say, I owned a 6600LE and it turned out to be pure crap, 64bit memory path and only as many pixel pipelines as a 6200, also I think it had DDR RAM, ick).

So it is possible the new driver just turned up a pre-existing instability in the system. The Stereo drivers by nature greatly increase the activity in the Video Card memory, so if that is where the LE is skimpy, then that is where it will show up more, using 3D drivers and gaming for a length of time.

I learned the hard way that you don't want an LE (A GS on the other hand is a Nice thing, especially if the first two numbers are 76 or 79 :D).

Thanx guys.
Mobo - Asus AN8-SLI with nForce4 chipset & drivers. PCI-E GFX card. Card is not overclocked, & temperature rarely gets over 32 deg. Athlon set to 10% auto overclock, and has never given any problems at this setting. The case alone has 5(!) fans - 2 intake, 3 exhaust.

One problem on installing new GFX/Stereo drivers is that it removes the monitor driver (Samsung Syncmaster 1100DF), which allows me to set refresh rates which are not supported, so I've ended up with 'sync out of range' & no picture more than once until I remember to reinstall the monitor driver.

I'm still thinking it's something to do with the 'Enable stereo using hotkey' setting, which may be clashing with some other keyboard, game, or utility keys.
I'll have another go at reinstalling when I get the time and leave that setting alone for a while, just to see how it goes.

I've always got GoBack if all else fails.

Thanx again for your suggestions,
Ed.

Your motherboard is similar to mine. I'm using an A8N SLI SE.

Try turning off that CPU overclock. Rule it out.

Nope. This time it only got as far as the medical test image. It did display in stereo, but hung up & would not respond to the esc key (or anything else). Task manager /end task was the only way out. Any attempt after that to use stereo at all resulted in instant crash & reboot.

/no.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It's not the AMD overclock, the hot keys, the antivirus, or the stereo refresh rates. Back to square one...

:D Looks like I might have got it. Last session, there was a brief error message about the Microsoft Intellipoint mouse software (v5.2) before it rebooted. Uninstalled mouse driver, then reinstalled Nvidia drivers. Everything OK. Downloaded latest mouse software (v6.1), installed, and all OK so far. DirectX, OpenGL, and Image viewer all working. Holding breath...

Thanx for all your suggestions guys. Will let U know how it goes.

Best,
Ed.

Update:
Well, that lasted about 5 minutes. At least this time it doesn't crash & reboot, it just doesn't work. Reverted drive to before mouse software installed, and all OK again. So now we know it's down to a clash with the mouse driver. Who to blame - Microsoft or Nvidia?

PS, anyone know of any good generic 5 button mouse software?

I have an IBM 4-button here and windows just works with it. Scroll wheel and two buttons on the face and a thumb button. In Firefox 2 I can click the scroll wheel on a link to open it in a new tab, in Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer/FF 2 I can also use the thumb button to activate the "go back" button. The programs should support the buttons. I DO NOT hold with installing drivers or taskbar icons for hardware that should be standard. Mice and keyboards with "internet" buttons especially.

AFAIK the drivers are totally unnecessary.

It would be a different story if the drivers were simply functional, but they always cause hangups and are to bloated for there simple task. Even if there was a nice GUI that generated an *.ini file for the driver to use I would be fine, but sadly hardware can't get their act together.

Maybe try a Logitec driver (chances are that is a re-branded Logitec anyway).

Update 2:
I have a Trust Gamer 6 button mouse which has never been used as the driver v1.0 was faulty. Now there's an updated driver available, so I decided to try it.
Upshot is that everything works perfectly.

So who to blame, Microsoft or Nvidia? Microsoft obviously  (or are they going to tell us that the Trust engineers have not followed the official MS API guidelines?)

Thanx again to all who offered advice.

Best,
Ed
