Wondering if 3DTV Play will work on the new TV I'm looking at
So I just built myself a new system: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition motherboard Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon quad core 4GHz CPU 32GB DDR3 2666 RAM 2x GeForce GTX 980 video cards running in SLI (which reminds me, I just updated my drivers and need to re-enable SLI) Currently my "monitor" is a 40" Sony Bravia TV. I've been using it for a few years and it looks and works great. However it only runs at 60hz, so I've been limited to running my games at 60fps. Kinda sad seeing as how my computer can output far more than that. So I've been thinking of getting a new one. The two I'm looking at are both Samsung 40" 4K UHDTVs. One of them is $700 and 120hz. The other is $900, 240hz, and a 3D TV. I'm leaning toward the second one because like the idea of being able to play some of my PC games in 3D (not to mention the 240hz would be nice). So what I want to know, is this: Does 3DTV Play work with ANY 3D TV? And other than the software, the TV, and the glasses that are for the TV, would I need anything else?

3DTV Play will work with any 3D HDTV provided that it supports HDMI 1.4, it costs $40. 3DTV Play is a Stereoscopic gaming middleware and is not required to play back Blu-rays from Discs, using software such as PowerDVD Ultra. (just an FYI for others that stumble upon this thread) Most games do not work very well with Nvidia's stereoscopic drivers, but you'll likely find a patch to add compatibility to a lot of them at http://helixmod.blogspot.com/2013/10/game-list-automatically-updated.html Stereoscopic gaming is highly recommended and is not a gimmick. Make sure you visit this forum often.

Also 4K TVs only run at 60hz in max resolution. The rest is done via interpolation. Some 4K TVs will run at a true 120Hz at 1080P though, but on some the firmware won't allow it.

All the 3DTVs are 60hz They up convert the 60HZ to 120HZ or 240HZ depending on the 3DTV this is called interpolating. With NVidia 3DTVplay you will be limited to 720P. My two Samsung's support all the 3D modes so I can use EDID overrides. IF you looking for a excellent UHD 3DTV the Samsung 55HU9000 supports all the 3D modes and the price now is roughly $1500 this set retailed last year for $3495.00.

With EDID mod (see https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/818183/3d-vision/gtx-970-4k-3d-vision-gaming-success-with-lgub850v-passive-tv-/post/4510149/#4510149, for example) and higher-end passive LG 4K TVs, you can use the full resolution capabilities of the 3D 4K TV @ 60 Hz - and require the full performance of your 980 SLI setup. 3DTV Play is NOT required/needed with this EDID mod, and the circular polarized passive display can provide less ghosting than active displays.

Cant find anything saying it is circular or linear. The LG 3D TVs are linear or circular? I dont lose the 3D effect when I tilt the head a bit like it happens with active 3D.

Sorry, but LG offers circular, NOT linear, polarization. Suggest checking web references like https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarized_3D_system and https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film-type_patterned_retarder. For example, theater RealD circular polarized glasses work great with both my LG and Sony passive 4K 3D TVs.

You should consider a projector. Similar cost, much better gaming experience.

Unfortunately, projectors do not provide the same resolution (3840x1080 per eye @ 60 fps), but can provide better FOV. However, my 55 in LG provides great FOV when viewed at its minimum viewing distance (4 ft). A 10 ft diagonal screen viewed from 10 ft has the same viewing geometry (eye steradians) as a 55 in screen viewed from 55 in. 3D eye focusing may be a little easier with the more distant screen, but I have not had any focusing problems with my 4k TVs.
