Hey Gang,
In case anyone interested, this game can now be played in 3D Vision with a D3D11 renderer developed by a talented individual on the World of Gothic forums. Gothic II is a classic RPG and I've always wanted to play this in 3D vision. Now, I am enjoying the hell out it!
Although the game mechanics are a little clunky and graphics may be dated, there are some things you can do to increase the visual appearance which I am happy to say is quite incredible looking considering the age of the title. There are graphic updates included in the following guide. I have included the link where you will need to follow the instructions closely. I set this up in about 15 minutes.
http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1415847-D3D11-Renderer-f%C3%BCr-Gothic-2-(alpha)-7
There are english instructions and after the first install and launch with the new D3D11 renderer it did one automatic update online. I have Steam version and works find. Just as a side note, I always disable Steams GameRenderOverlay.dll by renaming it before I play games in 3D to avoid crashes.
One of the screenies I attached here show an advanced graphics and options overlay that is triggered in game by the F11 key. The only thing you have to do is turn off shadows. See attached photos to show you how it looks. I did adjust both vertical and horizontal FOV which is done through the advanced options overlay and all these settings can be adjusted in real time without having to leave the game!
Also, no Nvidia profile has been attached to the game's exe. I am going to experiment and see what else can be done.
This is a defining PC RPG classic and if you have never played any of the Gothic games and you like RPG's, get this game which you can get dirt cheap nowadays and enjoy it in 3D!
P.S. Note: There may be issues that I am unaware of or have not encountered but I have played for several hours without problems. I did notice on one occasion the 3D vision disabled for no apparent reason. I believe this may be due to the FOV adjustments I was fiddling with. Anyway, I have no complaints considering I thought this game was a lost cause for 3D.
Enjoy!
One of my old time faves... Hmm... I remember playing it in 3D... maybe I played it with ELSA's drivers?
I do recall seeing at one time in the Nvidia control panel that it had a "good" rating for 3D but I was never able to get it to work. I suspect, as you mention, it was probably working with older drivers and hardware. This new D3D11 renderer I found is using DirectX features. Between the use of Directx 11 features and a few graphic mods, the game looks pretty good and up from the originals.
Further investigation into this, the creator is planning to improve the graphics and performance and also make this compatible with Gothic I. Modding is the greatest thing to happen to PC games.
I also attached Gothic II's exe to Max Payne 3 so I could save my convergence and depth settings. Not sure, but I imagine you could use a profile that supports DX11 for this purpose. I don't own Max Payne 3 so this works for me.

I'm sure there is no problem, when you follow the guide from the link above, watch for the "Non Steam" files and install the appropriate ones. I can't imagine it not working. In fact, I just found this out, I don't even have to open steam to run the game.

It worked, thanks. But I have to say "no"when the renderer asks for update and use Max Payne 3 profile.
EDIT:
Only 25-30 fps though.

The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views ... which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.
That DX11 renderer got me interested (I didn't know about it), so I've just installed the game, installed the mods, and fixed shadows and lighting in the starting area (my Dark Souls 2 formula, yeah!). I welcome savegames from multiple locations if someone has them. I want to check skyboxes (I have suspicions from hunting shaders), lighting from other locations, etc.
Here is a very low effort WIP version: https://s3.amazonaws.com/masterotaku/Gothic+2+Gold+Edition/Gothic_2_Gold_Edition_WIP1.7z
Unzip it in the "Gothic 2 Gold\system" folder (I have the GOG version).
To see the main menu and loading screens, you need very low convergence. I didn't even supply convergence profiles because I'm running out of time today. The fix includes a driver profile setting to enable 3D (StereoTextureEnable was at 0x00000000 by default, which is effectively 2D. I changed it to 0x00000023).
By the way, do text boxes from NPCs just not appear at all for you (even in 2D)? I can ask questions to NPCs, but I don't get answers.
Edit: later versions of the fix (whis week?) will have HUD options, convergence options, SMAA toggle, sharpening (ugh) toggle, etc, I hope.

I haven't tried it yet - gotta get through NieR! I don't think I have that much further to go but it's hard to tell with that game.

I have not tried it out yet but those pictures in the linked thread definitely look great.
@masterotaku
The shader sources are available here https://github.com/ataulien/GD3D11/tree/master/D3D11Engine/Shaders. Maybe this helps you fixing.
Thanks for linking the source, it may help if I get stuck about something later.
Today I've fixed sun shafts, the skybox (at least in the starting area), lighting for all shadows settings, and I also made a global SMAA + sharpening hotkey and an only sharpening hotkey (because I don't like sharpening :p). The game looks really nice now :). For now, only the HUD needs fixing. I still have one hour before going to bed, so I may release another WIP if I have time.
I'm in the process of downloading that >4GB mod too.

Done (I've fixed the main menu too): https://s3.amazonaws.com/masterotaku/Gothic+2+Gold+Edition/Gothic_2_Gold_Edition_WIP2.7z
Hotkeys:
- 2 (not the numpad): convergence presets.
- F2: HUD depth presets (some things have their individua depth, so this isn't an absolute value in most cases).
- F3: HUD toggle. Not disabled by default.
- F4: SMAA + sharpening toggle. Not disabled by default.
- F5: sharpening toggle. Not disabled by default.
The skybox is at full depth, but it suffered cropping at the sides as a side effect. I may do what I did with DMC4SE, allowing a toggleable stretching to cover the cropped area. But it will affect the sun...
Another thing: with the DX11 mod, vertical and horizontal FOV can be configured separately, in the F11 menu. I think that they have to be different and not equal, because both at 100 degrees make it look squished. 85 horizontal and 100 vertical works OK and the sun is round (may not be accurate).

Wow, they haven't even released the installation instructions in English yet! Thanks Masterotaku!!

I've also fixed Gothic 1 today (no release yet). It had some extra shaders to fix (skyboxes, fog and more shadows), but its HUD shader this time is also part of the skybox. I could separate them at the cost of having to use low convergence in the main menu. The rest is OK.
I think I'll make just one fix for both games. Exclusive shaders for each one will simply not load and it will be easier to maintain. And the fix is almost done (I'll change that F5 hotkey to F6, test more locations, etc).
