460 gtx sli or...

hi

I'm going to be buying a 3d projector and it has given me a reason to upgrade my video cards.

Was just wondering if i'm better off going with

2x 460gtx 1gb cards sli

or

a single 480 gtx card

There are reviews about two 460s being better then a 480 and its a little cheaper to go with the 460s
(i'm not going to buy two 480s)
Just because the reviews about games not in 3d are better with two 460s then a single 480, would there be an increase in performance in 3d compared to the single 480?

Just i want to know if two 460s in sli would be enough to play most games in 3D. Or would i be better off going with a
single 480? If there isn't much difference between them and i get a single 480 and later on i get another one will there
be a noticeable change?

i know i'm asking a lot since there won't be many people who had a single 460 with 3d then got another one. Just wanted
to know your thoughts.

Thanks in advance :P

Now i'm starting to change my mind again >.<

If i do get a 480 gtx and i wanted to add another is the heat really that much of an issue?
Did you water cool yours? I don't want to go down that road yet /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

I have a cooler master stacker 830 for a case which has 4 fans which pretty much blow right on the cards
well atleast the bottom two do.

Would that be enough? I don't think its going go help though since

My mother board (msi x58 pro-e) has the two pcie x16 slots so close that my current two cards in (8800gtx)
have about 5mm of space between them and are running at 80 degrees c
(Of course my machine hasn't been turned off in about 5 weeks hahaha)
so that might be why they are that high, i guess i'll never know.

But read some reviews about the heat from the 480s and its meant to be pretty insane /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

I think my brain may explode :( Since I don't want to buy a whole new board (are there boards with double spacing between the pcie slots?)
or water cool it, i'm probably going to get two 460s /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

i take back my comment about spending money :(

EDIT: just read your sig, :[] i would have the same system as yours (not the case though) if i did get two 480s haha. Well mine would be by the same brand since i'd
more then likely get them as the same time /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

How is the heat issue with yours?

It all depends on your upgrade path. The dual 460s are indeed better than a single 480, but you can't upgrade from there (460s can only go max 2 cards in SLI). If you got a single 480 you could add another in the future, but it will require a monster power supply and serious cooling. If you're using a projector though you're likely limited to 720p resolution, in which case dual 460s should be more than sufficient.

No, heat is no issue at all. I was running a tad hot when I was running them only with a CorsairTX 850 W. No issues at all since upgrading to the CorsairHX 1000 W, which you already have. Your case also appears to be pretty decent. I also had some space problems, especially since the Zotac card is quite large because of the attached Zalman fan. I solved the problem by installing the Zotac Card in PCI-e 1 slot and the Leadtek card in the 3rd PCI-e slot.
No problems at all after that and all my games run blazingly fast with not too much heat.
Stop having so many doubts and just go for it.

or water cool it, i'm probably going to get two 460s /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

i take back my comment about spending money :(

EDIT: just read your sig, :[] i would have the same system as yours (not the case though) if i did get two 480s haha. Well mine would be by the same brand since i'd
more then likely get them as the same time /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

How is the heat issue with yours?[/quote]
You won't regret it !

The 3d pcie slot is only x8 not x16 though isn't it? Will that matter, thought it would /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

You said you got one 480 then another later on ( well i assumed that )
did most games run fine with just one, not super new ones but like most?
Or did you need that second one.

Might just get two 460s and if they don't work out, i'll sell to them my friend who
buys any thing. I mean some games must run ok with just them two cards?
From what I've been reading some of the older games look better then most
new ones and their requirements are much lower.

If you can, don't talk me out of buying two 460s or i will go insane.

If any one can assure me that two 460s with a projector that will be on 720p
will run most games fine i'll greatly appreciate it.
