Not only resolution, but I'll also be concerned about other measures of picture quality, particularly black level and contrast ratio. It has the potential to be good, especially if it's OLED, but a lot of these small screens aren't made with that kind of visual quality in mind. The iPhone 5's contrast ratio is only about 1300:1. That's not horrible, but it would drag down the immersion.
.......That's not horrible, but it would drag down the immersion.
Well, maybe, but only after having first taken immersion to new heights. Regardless of the contrast, the net result should still be greater immersion than we're currently accustomed to

Until AMD starts making hardware as good as Nvidia's and Intel's, they won't really be in a position to blow anything out of anywhere. Except maybe smoke out of their you-know-whats.

Perhaps, but the same can be said about resolution. Resolution is just one factor of visual quality. We shouldn't lose track of the others.

Their graphics cards often match and sometimes exceed nVidia's, and they're extremely competitive on price. Their drivers aren't the best (though they're certainly improving), but they're definitely competing well.

But between their sloppy drivers, decidedly less capable high-end cards, dreadful CrossfireX microstuttering, tendency to be hot and noisy, and lack of extra features like TXAA and Adaptive Vsync, they are clearly second-best in almost every other department.
About the only thing they do better than Nvidia at the moment is marketing. Which is worrying, because the more they spend on marketing and sponsorship, the less they spend on catching up on the hardware and software.
I'm not saying this as a Nvidia fanboy. I'm saying this as someone who wants AMD to be the absolute best they can be (because strong competition benefits all of us....just look at how lazy Intel have become since AMD's CPUs stopped threatening them), and am so far disappointed by what I see.

Oculus Rift beats Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Game Critics E3 award

I know I'm a little slow posting this, but I think that the level of interest from all angles in this project is huge. I have been wanting to re-play halflife 2 series in 3D for ages, but am now putting it off until OR Consumer model. Winning best Periphal when there is 3 new mainstream consoles in the race and a few sideshows (Ouya etc) is quite an acomplishment.
I know many of you guys don't think it will succeed, but this has so much more momentum then nvidia 3D ever did, and I think we nearly got over the hill (though not quite). 3D broadcasts are being turned off around the world, and the tech seems to be going nowhere. Oculus rift could very well be the saving grace of continued mainstream 3D consumption.
Here's to hoping. Right now, 3D deus ex calls! Forever Denton out.

You may or may not be right, time will tell. I read an interesting article that attributed the second death of 3D being due to people watching TV having a different form of concentration, with a game or movie you sit and watch it through, with TV you usually move around during, so people cant be bothered with the glasses. I can totally see the point, you don't wear headphones when watching TV, but you are more likely to do so with a game or movie, its about commitment to it, I would never use a 3D TV for that reason.
It relates to the Rift in that it may have more success because with gaming you are already focussed on the game, so who cares if you 'have' to wear a headset. I still don't think it will go anywhere but at least it has that going for it.

I honestly think rift is here to stay and I truly believe in it [certainly not the developer kit though which people starting treating like consumer.] Problem is I really believe most people are believing in it without understanding anything about the device. There is going to be a lot of headache now that the kickstarter preorders ended and they are filling out non kickstarters starting this week. Too many people think they are going to play skyrim, future big name games, third person games, etc.
When I go into a rift forum where people throw around names of games they want to play on it such as... Starcraft, resident evil, mass effect and it just makes me wonder whats going to happen when these people get a rude awakening. A developer wanted to hop on the rift hype train and actually got called out on it [see top comments] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zyDD5lo7Us. Not to mention that many people interested in the rift, its really outside there tech experience [maybe in future it will be streamlined for consumer but I dont even think the average user knows what IPD is]. I been giving tech support on 3D vision for years, and I know for a fact its going to be a nightmare. Not to mention the people who actively speak out against 3D and condemn it openly and have a problem with people liking it are the ones where they can't see it/it caused physical pain to them... This is a very bad thing when people like this get a rift.
The oculus rift is going to be a great platform for indie first person titles perhaps a few non indie titles like I can imagine mirrors edge 2 just for publicity sake. People see Valve stepping in meaning that big name companies will. They really only did it for profit of steam store. Perhaps in 5 or so years things will change and almost all first person titles will support it. But their is really no evidence of this. The more graphics a game has the more development/costs/etc go into the rift conversion process. Like developer adds SSAO [screen space ambient occlusion] to game. Headtilt breaks SSAO where it detaches from models. How do you fix it? They need to figure it out. Same applies to all advanced effects. There is not "1" way to fix it. Valve had a research team involved in its conversion of rift... source engine is not exactly the most amazing engine not to mention they know it like the back of there hand after so many games.\The end results is only the pc elite can run it. An indie title will sell to more people on the rift for much less work.
To sum it up. I really believe it deserved to win. Its going to effect so many fields even outside of gaming. Indie developers are really given a chance. I think this generation's gaming cost of development was outside there means. So its going to be very interesting in what they can do now that they are worrying less about designing for the gamer as far as graphics and more so for immersion. The less graphics is actually better off for them since it will allow more users to run device at optimal framerate. Its not like 3d vision where some people can settle with 30-40fps. You will get sick, it will feel off, it will make you feel uncomfortable. And while the rift may not get the big heavy hitters a truly immersive game built for the rift could be better. Games like quantum conundrum, Sanctum 1, etc are not really the most graphical and they have wow'ed me in 3D. Being built on rift would of really changed people's perception of either title.
I get mine on Tuesday so I will write about it soon [not Tuesday.]

Starcraft, resident evil, mass effect and it just makes me wonder whats going to happen when these people get a rude awakening.
Easy. Many people will dismiss it as a fad and forget about the Rift altogether. Some will remain vocal haters (no surprise there - everything in gaming has its fair share of vocal haters). A minority will will readjust their expectations and enjoy the Rift, and look optimistically towards future iterations of the tech.
This will be a good outcome.
After all the dust settles and many people have moved on, there'll still almost definitely be a much larger pool of genuine enthusiasts than we have for 3D vision. With a bit of luck, it'll be a big enough market that at least a few devs will consider it financially worthwhile to spend the time and money solving the sorts of problems you've outlined above.
We don't need Day One perfection. We don't need every single (or even every tenth) gamer to be a convert. All we need is a reasonably sized market that is willing to spend money on VR. Once the market is there, the financial incentivisation will do the rest.
And I'm talking about real, market-driven financial incentivisation here, and not just something like Nvidia's TWIMTBP (which is the tech equivalent of the Soviet Union artificially subsidising food prices after many years of drought.....helps people out in the short run, but unsustainable in the long run)

You really start to notice the impact of the Rift when the recent DARK game supports the OR yet 3d vision is terrible. A non consumer device is getting much better press and support than a tried and tested technology already purchased by thousands of people, and theoretically supported by almost any 3dTV out there.

Well it has side by side support. I understand why they don't do 3D vision though. Its kind of a hassle with hooking to nvapi from what I heard though I cant really say personally. Deus ex was an example that took a while.
