3D Vision over Display Port? Does 3d vision not work over display port? and 290/285 comments
My samsung monitor died that came with my 3d vision package I bought so long ago. I went shopping and found another 120hz monitor, that was even a samsung, a SAMSUNG S27A750D ... I didn't read very close, or even think that a newer monitor that was 120hz wouldn't work with the existin 3d Vision adapter that I had.

And, although, overall, 3d Vision is cool enough that I keep trying it, I've played no game more than 30 minutes at a time, due to rendering artifacts like glow being rendered only on one eye or ther other... which makes sort of a flicker on the post processing glow effects... I figured 1) games would get better at supporting this, and I keep trying. 2) the driver would get better? Actually on point 2 I didn't even realize was possible until just today.

This monitor which doesn't work with 3d vision for some reason - I even tried some dvi-d to hdmi and display port adapters, and nothing. With the 285 drivre, the display port works, with the 290 driver display port on this monitor doesn't work at all, and I have to use a hdmi connection.

This monitor's 3d system is HORRRIBLE! Please I wish 3d Vision would work better. This system (tridef 3d) makes me use a launcher for all games I want to play. I can't just start a game and hit ctrl-T. AND! Their driver only supports like injecting into the render stream the ability to render split screen mode, which the monitor has buttons to compensate for in pretty much any way one would send the information to the monitor. I find the monitor itself very flexible. But anyway, the half screen rendering means everything is squished then stretched out to 2x it's halved size, which makes everything look really crappy when you're used to 1680x1050 60fps stereo full resolution. And I really find it disturbing that so many people said this was a GOOD thing.

I did, however, with the 290 drivr get the native glasses that work with the monitor to work with the enable 3d vision support. (over hdmi cable, which meant I had to reduce resolution). But I couldn't get it to trigger in the game with ctrl-T... it would only work in the test application.

I will say this; after fiddling with the tridef stuff for a LONG while (and after figuring out how to configure a game in their launcher *puke*) I did get a mode that sort of worked pretty well. And, all the dynamic shadows and light blooms, etc were actually in the right place, heck, even the sky was rendered at the right depth. Then I began to wonder, is it maybe easier to process the single render into a split screen sort of mode? then bloom filters etc could actually work on the whole image left and right, instead of being only on the one rendering pass.

Maybe the double pass for 'frame-sequential' screens somehow loses a pass to the application? I don't know, but I do know that someone else's injections into the stream can result in a better image, and should be learned from :)

But; I hate that I spent $399 on a monitor that became out of stock on cyber monday to upgrade and pay $499 for the next model (samsung, 120hz, probably compatible; how wrong I was?) and now I have to wait another week to return this one and order yet another... because really this launcher thing is for the birds; to have to configure a launcher to launch a launcher to launch a game? insane.

This monitor only has 2 inputs, Display Port and HDMI - and maybe I can find a DVI-D->display_port adapter somewhere and that will fool it?

and I'm really trying to say I like 3d vision, but even as I write this, I remember all the blooms and explosions that were rendered correctly in stereo and wonder if I could stand to use their launcher; but it's not frame-sequential interleaved screens, even though on display port the monitor is 1920x1080x120h no problem; [I read a rumor that nVidia's stance was they wouldn't allow them to somehow use the driver to send full screen images instead of 2 halves; because somehow samsung was now allied with ATI? Who knew? So I guess that's my other option -froget the whole thing and get an ATI card? their 5x cards can apparently support 'frame-sequential' mode. that nvidia isn't going to allow tridef 3d to get to ] doesn't sound like that's a winning strategy either.

I intend no offenses; I did want to share this experience, and offer vague comments about the whole thing. And hopefully learn that if I just wait a couple days a beta driver can fix my issues alltogether.

Oh, my one other thought I had in the middle of that was - 'What if you could have the game render on a virtual resolution that was 2x as wide as the monitor, and render it as two halves, then send those to the monitor frame-sequential? Then that'd be 3840/2 = 1920 so i'm back to native width.

You could try the USB-powered DisplayPort (DP) to Dual Link DVI-D from either Nvidia or Startech (both about $100). I was able to successfully run the full-screen 3D Vision 3D Wizard by porting a 3D signal from a laptop's Quadro with DP only to a 120 Acer monitor. Might be worth a shot....
