Next Car Game (disable shadows, smoke and fire fix)
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ "Next Car Game" is a great early access game being developed by Bug Bear Entertainment. Demolition derby, and crazy tracks where it's all about molesting your opponents. The demolition physx in this game is crazy good! _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Problems : - Dynamic shadows - Static shadows (below the cars) - Smoke effects - Flame/fire effects Temporary solution : - Removed problematic shaders (disabled) I've created two versions. The first is the vanilla version, and the second is with a SweetFX profile that I included (not my own; removed only the vignette effect due to 3d vision distraction.). The d3d9.dll for SweetFX has been renamed to d3d9_sfx.dll, and also added in the DX9Settings.ini (ProxyLib). Instructions : 1. Extract the file (of choice) into the game installation folder where the .exe file is located. 2. If using the SweetFX version; edit the DX9Settings.ini (notepad or something of the like), and change the path in the ProxyLib line. ProxyLib = "your own game installation folder/d3d9_sfx.dll" without the quotes. 3. When launching the game, in the settings window, set shadows to low. (if not you'll see an annoying black box surrounding the car at all times. I was not able to localize the shader responsible for that anomaly) 4. (Optional) Custom SLI bits (for nvidia inspector). Either use these bits "0x03480005" in DX9 compatibility bits in the "Next Car Game" profile, or simply remove the game exe from the profile, and add the exe file to the "Ridge Racer Unbounded" profile. (I did the latter). Remember to set Ambient Occlusion to "On" if you add the exe file to the "Ridge Racer Unbounded" profile. That's it! You can now enjoy some heavy destruction without the extremely annoying offset on the shadows and effects. The shadows are completely broken/offset, as well as the smoke and flames being rendered in 2d and at screen depth level. I've come as far as disabling the shaders responsible for the problems, but I'm very new, so nothing is fixed, just removed. This does detract a little from the immersion obviously, however, the game is now more pleasing to the eye. - InsaneInGame

Problems :

- Dynamic shadows
- Static shadows (below the cars)
- Smoke effects
- Flame/fire effects

Temporary solution :

- Removed problematic shaders (disabled)

I've created two versions.

Instructions :

I was not able to localize the shader responsible for that anomaly)
Thanks Pirateguybrush. :) Yes, it was thanks to bo3b's school. He covered many finer details in the tutorials, and a couple of paragraphs in the guides section on the helix blog. So that was actually enough to make this temporary fix. I guess it's a whole different ball game to actually fix what is broken, but hopefully I will manage to tag along with his upcoming tutorials. I think it's fun though. :)

Completely Awesome! Congratulations! Could not be more stoked to help you get to the first level, and you have already passed Lesson 4, which is going to be fixing an entire game. (That was going to be Lesson 3, but that Const thing kinda took longer than I expected. :-> ) That smoke/dust effect is definitely a big loss, but since it's presently 3D versus dust cloud- I personally think the 3D shots are far more interesting. On the other hand, minus all the smoke, you get some really spectacular reflections off the cars. Depending upon what is happening with that dust effect, I expect to hit that in later lessons. Shadows are usually a whole different story, but I hope to hit those too. (I have yet to successfully fix a shadow effect myself.) I'd like to encourage you to contact <eqzitara@yahoo.com> to get a login for the HelixMod so you can make your post to share the game. There is a section at the bottom of the gamelist, which is for games with only disabled effects, not fixed, but as noted those can still be killer. Later on after you fix some effects, you can update your post. For extra encouragement- I have a game in that list too.

Awesome work! Thx a lot. Got a little bit low fps under 30, but its still Alpha.

@Bo3b Thank you so much. :) It feels good knowing that my teacher approves my work. hehe. Yes, removing those smoke/cloud/fire effects (they all belong to the same pixel shader), does reduce the visual fidelity and level of immersion, but as you say, thanks to the dynamic reflections (luckily they didn't seem to be affected) the 3d vision experience is still pretty good. Perhaps the smoke can be fixed when my comprehension level is high enough, by keeping up with your tutorials down the line. Perhaps it is borderline naive of me to think this highly of my own capabilities, but I'm going to stay optimistic. :) Thank you for the contact e-mail to eqzitara. I've already passed him a little note. ;) And I spotted your fix in the "disable effects section" on the gamelist. Flight Simulator X (FSX). Awesome! :D I'm looking forward to your next lessons. @ronrebell Thank you, and you're welcome :) Yes, this game is not very well optimized yet due to being in an alpha state, but using the "Ridge Racer Unbounded" profile (adding the game.exe to that profile in nvidia inspector) will, or should, utilize the gpu on the second card from only 10% to about 90%. That might vary of course. Perhaps you've already tried this. I've noticed that the "dynamic reflections" are processing hungry, so having it enabled will eat quite some performance, but with the aforementioned sli bits, it should at least help a little bit. The reflections are really worth having there in my opinion, since they add a lot to the realism and immersion. :)

At the moment my second GTX 780 is on the way to RMA :-( Played it @ 1920*1080 with one GTX 780. Dynamic reflections off and Vsync off works fine. Aboout 90 fps and sometimes short drops to 30 fps with 24 cars. Once again, great work here and thx to bo3b keeping 3D Vision alive!

Thank you for the fix. I just tried it without the sweefx and it looks good besides the annoying black box in the middle of the screen. Also now my crashes when i go to exit it. Not sure if this was happening for others. Here is a screenshot of the game.

@Arthane Hmm, that is certainly an oddball. That black box is related to a shader I'm not certain of yet, or perhaps it's related to something that cannot be modified. It's kind of like closing the window curtains, or opening them. They split off to each side based on the convergence value you set. I've also seen this happen in "Sonic Generations" (with the helix fix) as well, when you push the convergence above a certain value. If you change the convergence by holding one of your set convergence hotkeys down for a period of time, you will see that the box will start to divide itself. I haven't been able to figure out what is causing this. So as a temporary solution, I've just increased the convergence value until the box kind of cover the screen. It will look like it's a thin black layer on top of the picture. Not ideal, but that's the only way to get rid of that black box it seems. Either that, or you lower the convergence so the black "curtains" dissapear outside of the screen. It is very strange indeed. I'm not skilled enough yet to dive any further, so I can't do much more than suggesting to experiment with your convergence (in combination with separation/depth) until you're happy with the 3d effect as well as the state of the black box. The crashing when you exit the game happens occasionally with me as well. As far as I know, that is something that can happen with certain games when using the helix d3d9.dll file(s). I've tried the different release dll's, but the crashing happens no matter what. Annoying, but that's how it is. :/ Sorry that I cannot be of more assistance. :/

Ill try messing with the convergence later today. I know the game is in early alpha still so maybe it will go away when the game gets further into development. I also read yesterday there coming out with a new update soon with a new car and track i believe. So maybe something will change with the new build that is coming.

Sorry that I cannot be of more assistance. :/

Thanks for the info. Ill try messing with the convergence later today. I know the game is in early alpha still so maybe it will go away when the game gets further into development. I also read yesterday there coming out with a new update soon with a new car and track i believe. So maybe something will change with the new build that is coming. For those that are following this game, build #6 is out now on steam. It includes a new track, a car and also online racing! I asked bug bear entertainment about 3d vision support and there response to me was "well we were going to say maybe for our next project, but now were looking into our options here. can we say :)". So this is hope for this getting 3d vision! Edit: I just went into the game and now the big black square that was there is now gone! The game about looks perfect now in 3D.

Hmmm, I still have the big black square that follows the car around. Smoke and flames are still at wrong depth. Actually, for me, its as broken as it always was.

EDIT 3 The big black square I cannot do anything about unfortunately. It's still just as prominent for me as before, so why "Arthane" don't have the square visible anymore is out of my reach. This is all very funky to be honest. :P EDIT 2 I tried out the new racing track, and the smoke effects are re-enabled in the game. They've added quite alot. I've found the shader responsible for the smoke, and I will disable the smoke effect and upload the new version. I'll also check out any other anomalies in the game as well. :) EDIT 1 Well. I guess Bugbear has released another update that brakes the disabling fix. The smoke and flames are not supposed to be shown, since I disabled those effects through their respective shaders. I guess the shaders have changed due to new/more content so I will have to check it out later. I guess disabling and altering shaders on an early access game is just wasting time. "Arthane" mentioned in the post above you written just a few hours earlier than your post, that the square is now gone and that the game still looks good (with the effects disabled). I'll fire up the game myself now and check. ;)
