Looking for one that won't break the bank and supports 3dvision at 1080p/60 (or am I stuck with 3DTVplay at 720p/60?)
How big can I make the image while still looking acceptable?
As far as I know, with current projectors you're limited to 720p@60 (or 1080p@24). For that reason, if the projector will be used for 3D gaming ONLY, buying a 720p projector might be enough, instead of buying one with 1080p.
I watch movies, so I bought the W1080ST (full HD) which requires 3DTV Play. It's also short throw (good for tight spaces). Placing it 180cm from screen produces about 110" and it still looks very good at that size.
At first I had an issue playing certain games (such as Batman Arkham Origins); changing driver solved it https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/693622/3d-vision/3dtv-play-on-tv-superior-to-projector-/post/4132096/#4132096.
Also if you get one that requires 3DTV Play, and need DLP glasses, check out the recent posts in this thread https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/512965/3d-glasses-reviews-dlp-user-perspective-/
Thanks. So are there no projectors I can run at 1080p with 3dvision?
There are (well sort of). (if we are not counting the 24hz 1080P that 3DPlay allows over HDMI)
You have to step up to "3DVision Pro" and/or professional line of projectors which I last checked cost $7500+ however many of the models (north of $8-14K) are sporting 4K output, dual $400 lamps and seemingly intended for use in theaters.
However all of these fail at "not breaking the bank" of %99 of 3DVision users.
+1 on the BENQ 1080ST, a little more costly than some purely 720P projectors, the ST ("short throw" allowed me to set it up in a bedroom (now converted to home theater/gaming room) and mounting on ceiling with 20' power+HDMI cords. Sitting ~7' in front of a 100" screen with full 5.1 sound creates immersion IMHO "to die for" and is the next best thing to VR.

I got the Acer H5360BD used on Amazon for £375 which is 3D TV Play 720p 60hz 3D set to 100" straight onto my living room wall and its great. Its not a short throw projector though, so you need to have a fairly long room for a bigger image. It also uses DLP link 3D glasses instead of the NVidia 3D glasses.
I was initially concerned how Blu Rays and games would look in 1280x720 after being used to 1080 for the last 5 years on my TV and Asus 3D monitor, but the added depth and bigger image paired with 5.1 decent audio is well worth it and I haven't regretted the purchase for a second.
The projector is also bright enough not to require a dedicated screen if your wall is pale and doesn't have too many imperfections.

If your only interest is games, then the Acer H5360 (3D Vision glasses) or H5360BD (DLP-link with 3DTV Play) is all you need. I've put over 2000 hours into my H5360BD and I think it's great.
I've put 95 hours into my new Benq W1070 (same as W1080ST, just not short throw). It's overall better. Better 2D, better 3D Blu-rays (full HD). But for 720p 3D games, it's only slightly better.

Thanks guys, so I'm better off just getting a cheaper 720p projector for gaming as 1080p will be useless thanks to 3DTVplay and current HDMI? I can live with 720p if I have to, I have enough horsepower to run SSAA to clean it up.
Next questions:
I suppose 3 in portrait surround would work too? How would I go about connecting 3 HDMI sources from GTX780 SLI? There is only 1 HDMI output on each card.
and
With the new HDMI standard are we likely to see full 1080p 3D projectors any time soon? Affordable ones that is, none of those 20k pro projectors.

It depends, anyone who says other wise is just guessing. I've always heard people say 1080P@60hz is right around corner for like 5 years.....often times they get pissed off when I say otherwise.
Projector manufactures don't really have a reason to increase past 1080P@24hz unless 3D blu ray format increases to higher fps/new hdmi format. They don't care about 3d vision market.
I really wouldn't worry about "future" of 3d projectors at this time. There might be 1080P@60hz 3D projectors but they will be crazy expensive since they cater to the few who really want it.

From what I read, you cannot use projectors in portrait mode. Apparently the airflow will cause them to overheat. I'm not sure that's true, it doesn't make sense to me that air forced by a fan would care whether it was sideways or not, but there might be something else in the design that makes them not work. Worth double checking if you go that route.
You can connect 3 HDMI via adapters. The DVI adapters are straightforward. There is another thread talking about surround setups and how they need to be connected.

If the problem is just airflow, then surely there's a DIY hack to fix it, if only to strap on an extra fan onto the grill to make sure the heat gets sucked out properly.

I'm really tempted to buy a projector. Though I would have to change my entire gaming setup. For those that have a projector, how do you game? I'm assuming you're on a couch, you have a wireless keyboard on your lap & a mouse to the side? Or perhaps you use a lapdesk?

Wireless mouse, keyboard and xbox controller. Job done!
Personally, I only play certain types of games on the big screen.
Fast paced FPS/multiplayer isn't really suited imo as you'll struggle to stay competitive.
I got my PC set up at the back of the room next to the sofa, use a wired keyboard and mouse and a 360 pad, and use a solid mouse mat on the arm of the sofa, keyboard sits on my lap.
Have a long optical lead to my amp for 5.1 and HDMI out directly to my projector.

I watch movies, so I bought the W1080ST (full HD) which requires 3DTV Play. It's also short throw (good for tight spaces). Placing it 180cm from screen produces about 110" and it still looks very good at that size.
