Sonic Generations

To be honest, Sonic is one of the best looking 3D games I've seen in a long time. Skyrim is excellent? That's awesome news. Even after all the anti-3D talk from the creator

As I said earlier, it works... But for a game that was made to work in 3D, it's disappointing. The modern Sonic parts are nice during "3D" gameplay (even with the targeting, shadow and HUD problems), but when it switches to 2D gameplay, or the classic Sonic parts, it's not impressive at all. For me that fan made Sonic game "Sonic Fan Remix" is way more impressive in 3D than those parts. What kills it for me is the impossibility to change the convergence, as the HUD gets messed up, so we can't bring things to front to make it really impressive.

Well, maybe the in-game stereoscopic option corrects some of the problems, but it doesn't work with 3D Vision. Maybe Nvidia could convince the developer to enable an option for us. And keep the HUD always at screen level. And get rid of the "hidden" images on the sides of the screen that show up when we change the convergence.

I agree with the idea of showing developers that we want 3D support in our games. I'm almost buying L.A. Noire on PC, even though I already have it on PS3, because it has 3D Vision support.

Same on my side. If I use the in game SBS, there is no convergence at all. If I use NVidia 3D Vision, the HUD kills me. A fix from Sega would be nice, but I doubt it because Sega doesn't seem to patch their games often. Need to find a hack to disable all HUD parts.

Is there no way on NVidia side to detect and replace the HUD? Registry entries like RHWLessAtScreen are long gone and no longer possible using fragment shaders.

sinse my monitor now work with nvidia 3d vision fully and is compatible with side by side too i can compare the differences.
and yea 3d vision is buggy in this game (the target vizor , shadows, particles and almost everything 2d,video scene included) and is less impresive in clasic gameplay.
but the ingame 3d mode (side by side 3d compatibility required and of course you need to disable 3d vision with ctlr+T) looks mutch better. and no bugs happend in everything mentioned above.
so if your monitor suport side by side 3d,you know what to do.
(this mode is in passive lg screen and most 3d tv. and is not limited by 3d tv play sinse it is game engine and monitor sided.)

@Chiri: Have you tried texmod? Usage involves texture extraction, modifications and loading the modified textures through texmod. By making the texture totally transparent it will not be visible anymore. It isn't difficult either but texmod does not support all games.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately texmod let Sonic Generations crash.

There was an update from Sega today but apparently with no fixes concerning 3D at all.

This patch optimized the game on Nvidia a lot!

I have a GTS 450 and I was not able to play in 1920x1080 60Hz Side\Side until now. It is smooth as hell with this update! I am using the latest beta driver.

Sick game in 3D....

I bought the game and tried it. It's gorgeous, and the best part of it is the native 3D mode works on my dual-projector setup.
It seems the game assumes the display is 16:9 when activating the native 3D mode.
When rendering 1920x1080, I get side by side squashed for 3DTVs.
When rendering 3840x1080, I get side by side at full ratio : exactly what I need for my projectors.

I agree about the convergence : the game's setting is 100% depth and no pop-out. There are still some nice moments where the 3D effect really shines despite the conservative convergence setting.

Here's a great community dealing with Sonic hacking:

http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=25598&st=0

I managed to set the HUD textures transparent, but I still need to remove the homing indicator and the left decoration bar.
On full convergence without the useless HUD, stereo immersion is perfect and on full speed the best stereo experience I had so far.

I'm sending e-mails for them to explain that we 3D Vision users can't use the in-game stereoscopic option, but they just don't understand. I already told them that that option only works for those who have 3D TVs, that's not our case, but look at the response they gave me.

You will have to change the 3D settings of your TV so it recognised the type of 3D rendered by the game.

If you see 2 images side-by-side then you should have an option on your TV allowing your TV to render the 3D as it should.

While we cannot give specific advices to set up your TV, if you encounter issues setting up your TV then we would suggest referring to the TV manual or to your TV manufacturer for further assistance.

So it seems they don't even know what 3D Vision is. Please NVidia, try to contact them and explain...

EDIT: Well, I'm trying to contact SEGA, because that's the e-mail I found... somewhere. I think I should have contacted the developer Devil's Details instead.

Hi

Sega is aware of 3D Vision and they purposedly disable their in game option when they detect 3D Vision and render into our driver.

However, they are not rendering it properly.

We have notified them a few weeks back and are hopeful they will release a patch, but we dont know yet.

Dam, I was really looking forward to playing this game in 3D, didn't realize it wasn't going to work correctly since the steam description explicitly stated it ran in stereo 3D. I suppose I should have looked for "3D vision" specifically... Obviously with this much time passed I guess I can't expect anything to be done about that :(

I played the demo and it had decent 3d experience.

I just wish I could try the side-by-side version.

I captured a side-by-side session with 3D Vision disabled and later watched it in Nvidia 3D Vision video player.

It is quite clear that the game has more issues when rendered through the nvidia driver. I havn't studied it a lot but the loading screen which is flat in side-by-side has elements rendered at very different depths with 3D Vision.

The game was clearly developed for the native side-by-side in mind. 3D Televisions have the ability to view side-by-side interactive content in 3D so it would be nice when we are using monitors lacking such ability if the graphics card driver could do the same thing without disturbing the game being rendered. I.e. rendered without 3D Vision but repackaged and resized and displayed with 3D Vision.

As I will not be playing in 2D side-by-side I will have more to add on the current 3D Vision experience as I get further into the game.

So GeDoSaTo implemented a toon shader, and playing Generations in 3D Vision, with the toon shader, downsampling from 4K looks absolutely astonishing.
