Screen door effect on matte 3D monitors?
I have an ASUS VG248QE monitor. I like to get really close to the monitor when playing 3D and this seems to produce a screen door effect, due to the matte coating. It might just be me seeing the separation between pixels but I don't think so. Will removing the matte coating on my monitor break the monitors 3D capabilities? I've seen tutorials online which discuss how to do it but none mention if the monitor is still 3D capable without the matte finish.

If you remove the coating the monitor cant polarize with the glasses anymore, no 3D. The screen door effect is normal, mine does it too.

In my experience the outmost layer of an lcd-panel is the polarizing layer. It's needed for the display to function properly (regardless 2d or 3d-monitor) and if you peel it off you will end up having a bright shining backlight device. If the tutorials describes that it works on lcd-panels, then i believe that the people doing those tutorials only wants to mess with people.

All 3d vision monitors have that effect at some level I belive. I have two. the old Samsung 2233rz, and the asus vg278he. I think it also has to do with pixel density. My Samsung, being smaller, has a greater pixel density, therefore not as noticeable, but still there. With my 27", it is more noticeable but still looks pretty good to me. People I show 3d to don't even notice it.

It isn't noticable to me either unless I'm close to the screen but being closer screen adds something to 3D gaming in my opnion (while destroying my retina I'm sure). If that's the way it is, I accept it, was unaware removing the matte finish will ruin 3D. I've seen that a good handful of people have removed the matte finish on my monitor and use it for 2D Lightboost only.

On the VG278H i insisted on using it up close for a wider FOV and it sort of worked ok, but i also ahd a problem with a strange patterned blurring from what i believed was the matte sheet (which was also the polarization layer). I tried peeling it off but luckily i noticed the light without it was pure white. I think it was Linkay that pointed me to a website that sold polarizing sheets. I would certainly have tried using them if i could stand using such small displays over my 46".

I used a 32" for a short while from probably 800cm away and found myself going "OMGWTFWHEREDIDHEKILLMEFROM" then realising I couldn't see the middle of the screen and edges at the same time.

I do turn my head and I do remember thinking about it each time i've upgraded my display, in particular from 24 to 30 and then from 30 to 46, but im happy to report that i don't ever think about it other than that. When walking to the various destinations in Skyrim for example, I have an appropriate FOV setting so that i look around a little bit like im wearing an Oculus Rift.

Is there any way to reduce this effect? It isn't that noticeable usually but, as I've stated, up close it is. I just feel in would make 3D objects look more real and enhance the VR experience if the matte coating wasn't messing things up. Is there a 120 hz 3D monitor that doesn't have this effect?

Hmm, so far I think it is the norm for 3d monitors. Nothing you can really do about it until they double or triple the resolution capabilities of 3d monitors. :/ But, if it bugs you that much, I believe that 3d vision projectors don't have that problem (maybe equzitara can elaborate further). I'd have a projector, but I don't have a wall, or anywhere, in which to put a huge projector screen like that. Damn kids taking up all my spare bedrooms!! :P

I also do not have enough room for a projector. I do have a Samsung that has 1080p checkerboard, it's pretty close to the quality of my monitor though. I'm looking into Libertine`s suggestion of removing the matte sheet and replacing in with a smooth polarizing lair. Info on how that might work is hard to find though. I'm not gonna risk a disaster unless I can be sure of the process or find some repair shop that can perform such aa service.
