I can't apply the monitors maximum refresh rate (120hz) probably because dual link DVI isnt work
Hi,

I could imagine that my problem is not new, but after trying to find a solution myself by reading a lot of different posts, I finally gave up. I don't understand most of the technical stuff anyways.

Today I received my Acer GN245HQ with an inbuilt IR-transmitter. After hours of trying to get nvidia vision to work I havent found a way to get the promised 120 hz needed for it - only 60 - 75 are available. Now my uneducated guess is that the required dual link DVI is not working. However, both the monitor and my graphics card (GTX 260M, notebook) support it and the cable is dual link as well. I am using Win7 32-bit. What am I doing wrong? Please help, I'm going insane here...

Are you positive it's a dual link cable, I always tell people to go back and try it with the cable that cam with the monitor, it's amazing how many people think they have a dual link cable and it isn't.
If it's not that the only other likely culprit is the monitor driver, there may be no driver for the Acer, but it may be a left over driver from your previous monitor, check with device manager.

Thank you for replying.

I'm pretty positive it's a dual link cable, because 1. it got shipped with the (3d-)Monitor and 2. it doesnt have a "gap", but all 24 pins. The latter is probably the more convincing fact...

I already downloaded a driver from acer and manually replaced the P&P-driver with it, but it didnt help.

EDIT: is it possible that the graphics card doesnt support certain refresh rates or combinations of resolution/rate? But since it is dual link compatible, I think that would be extremely pointless.
Damn, I was really looking forward to this...

I wonder if it's related to the Mobile chipset, judging by many threads on here I know getting 3DVision working on laptops connected to external displays is often troublesome at best.

I just played around with NVidia control panel -> custom resolutions. Most of what I tried didnt work. However, I just set it to 100Hz and the screen alternatively switched from black to on again every second or so. There was a message from the monitor. Something about the wrong cable. I should use the one that was shipped with the monitor, as far as I remember - I tried to reproduce, but I'm just getting black screens now for the same setting.

But as I said, not only did the frickin cable come with the monitor, it DOES have 24 pins, which makes it dual link, right? This is all so ridicolous. Can nothing ever make sense?

EDIT: it specifically says "please use the dual link DVI cable that came with your monitor"
also, the screen doesnt switch on and off, it was just the message (happened so fast the first time...). But the resolution didnt fit the extents. There small parts missing on the left and right. Dunno, if this is in any way informative or not.

So what I have is definitely a DVI-D dual link cable. I dont need a DVI-I cable by any chance, do I? (The one with the four extra pins around the blade)

If that's not the case, at least I know for sure that the cable is not really the problem...

I also found 3d-ready gaming notebooks on the internet that have the same graphics card as I do, GTX 260M. So I don't want to believe that this isnt solveable somehow. Maybe Windows 7 is the problem?

no you need a Dual Link DVI-D cable.
The ones that ship with the monitors usually are the best bet, 3rd party cables especially longer ones often have issues, though they usually don't prevent you from changing to the resolution.

Maybe you either have a bad cable or a bad connector somewhere?

Thanks again for helping. At least from the outside there doesnt seem anything wrong with the cable and it work fine with 60hz. Unfortunately, I don't have another cable for testing nor another computer/monitor that support dual link DVI. I thought about updating my bios, but it's from 2009 (maybe 2008) and not that old... I also installed the latest Windows 7 and service pack updates. Of course, nothing helps.

Maybe this isnt the right forum for this after all. Does someone know a good one for this kind of problem?

Have you made sure you click computer monitor in the change resolution tab of nvidia taskbar?

Thanks for replying!

So there is a HD,SD category and a PC category listing resolutions. HD,SD is limited to 1080p,1920x1080@60hz. The maximum PC resolution is 1680x1050@60hz, plus lots of smaller resolutions. Some of them allow a maximum of 75hz, most of them don't.

I still can't help thinking that dual link DVI is being treated as single link by my system for some reason. But I do have all the latest drivers and windows updates.

Just to see the 3d effect I created a custom resolution of 1280x720@120hz. Apparently that one works, although I didn't manage to count the actual pictures per second. I didn't make it through the NVidia 3d Vision wizard though, without cheating (I saw nothing). It changes the resolution and overrides my refresh rate, I guess. Then I started Mount&Blade using my desktop resolution with 3d effect on. However, putting on the glasses didn't make any difference whatsoever and they automatically turn off after a few seconds. So it seems the transmitter that is (claimed to be) inbuilt into the LCD doesn't transmit anything. Do I have to connect the glasses somehow - like an XBox-Controller?

I can also use the custom resolution 1680x1050@120hz (using it right now...), but I constantly get this message from the LCD in the middle of the screen saying "Incorrect cable. Please use the dual link DVI cable that came with your monitor." Below that is a picture of the dual link DVI cable that I'm using and that came with my frickin monitor. Is it really likely that a new cable that looks perfectly healthy is not working in dual link mode, even though it works fine otherwise?... Somehow I think buying a new one would just be a waste of money.
