Future of 3D Vision Support (Official announcement from NVIDIA)
  7 / 42
Sad news indeed. I've been using the Nvidia 3D driver pretty much since they acquired it from 3DFX. I just got the current version of 3D vision working on my projector with my new PC with a 1080ti. I still maintain an old PC that uses a 2005 version of the Nvidia 3D driver. I also have another PC here with a full licence for Tridef that I use on my projector. They are now also out of business and their website is gone. No more ability to authorize their licence. IZ3d, Tridef and Nvidia 3D all dead, yikes. I have both Vive and Rift CV1 I love VR but it saddens me that it has fractured the 3D world and created the 3D void. For the life of me I can't understand how and why Nvidia isn't a market leader in VR. Their driver worked brilliantly in VR 15 years ago with the Emagine Z800. Another bad decision from Nvidia. I think they should stay with things that they are good at like 3D instead of re purposing video cards to collect monopoly money

I would like to make this following suggestion, as we as a community, process and come to terms with this announcement. 1. We should start an online petition and in this way we should be able to get a more tangible idea of just how many community members and 3d vision users are out there. I for one rarely post in this community although I read forum posts daily. There may be many hundreds of users just like me out there. 2. We should try to engage in a unified dialogue with nvidia about the future of 3d vision beyond April 2019 and April 2020 as the active community that we are. I for one have just checked the boxes of the 3 PG258Q monitors and the PG278Q I bought less than 2 years ago and they all list "3d vision ready" on there boxes. I also upgrade my gpus regularly only purchasing 2 2080 Ti's around 3 months ago. What I am getting at is that the financial contribution of 3d vision users to nvidia may not be insignificant when you take into account a few thousand or more users. THis could easily run into millions spent on gpus by community members for each upgrade cycle. I personally doubt that there is a significant cost in nvidia maintaining 3D vision support as they seem to have done very little since announcing 3d compatability mode several years ago. I think we would need representatives to speak to nvidia on our communties behalf if this is what the community agrees to. I plan on contacting nvidia support and asus support myself, as to me, it is unacceptable that newly purchased hardware has stopped being supported for the one purpose I purchased it in the first place. I wonder if we have legal recource to mount a class action lawsuit against nvidia and I am going to speak to a lawyer later this week to get some advice on this. Alot of options have been mentioned by community members including nvidia making the 3d drivers open source, nvidia starting a subscription service for updating 3d vision drivers or allowing us separate 3d vision driver downloads. I think we need to raise these or other questions the community feels are appropriate with nvidia directly in the first instance. After all, nvidia has given us the best stereoscopic gaming solution out there for the last few years, and if we could work with them in a meaningful way, then that would be ideal. Although it is a pity that thusfar nvidia has not addressed our concerns about poor cpu optimisation and disproportionate poor performance with 3d vision (Yhis has been one reason why I use 3d compatability mode which works well for surround gaming by the way). Please let me know your thoughts.

I agree with the above spending a lot of money on hardware to play in 3D Vision and then have the company no longer support it. This just s**ks.

1. Nvidia's move to ditch 3DV is very, very stupid. They had a great idea to make it a neat feature for VR. Displayes of current mainstream VR HMDs were too low resolution, but upcoming ones will be good enough for 3D V "emulated TV" to work. Why are they doing this can have just one explanation: they're out of touch with gamers just as much as Blizzard was while announcing Diablo Immortal. Maybe we should try to convince them somehow. 2. If not, the second best option would be to try asking NV to open it. It never should've been a closed standard anyway. 3D worked without certified monitors in CRT monitor era and they did it wrong this time. The mistakes continue if all the work put into making so many games work well in 3D, was to go to waste. I'd be careful if the work was to be sold on Steam. That could attract the lawyers and hurt the cause. Unfortunately I don't know how else people working on 3DV could keep up their work. But hopefully (getting a financial reward big enough to allow for further work) it can be solved one way or another

Ay, that's a bummer indeed. I haven't been a lot around here the last 6 months. Mostly since I started my youtube channel I also stopped more or less to play games in 3D. But hey, I am still a great 3D VISION fan and this is indeed some bad news. From an economical point of view this seems to be conclusive what NVIDIA is doing, but as a 3D VISION gamer, I am of course also a bit disappointed, especially since I wanted to wait for new GPUs for my new rig, also in order to get more into 3D VISION gaming again - my old machine was not enough for Shadow of the TR in 3d. On the other hand, VR took a lot of the 3D VISION "wow feeling" for now. Games like Fallout 4 VR, Skyrim VR or Contractors are exactly what I loved in 3D and now they are even available in VR. With new VR HMD and better resolution this will be even better in the future. But hey, I am absolutely willing to financially support the driver project. I think some sort of petition in order to get to know how many are out there would be interesting and then a kickstarter or similar. thanks a lot to the community for the last 8 years I am here. I won't go away, this is for sure. mrorange

no, believe me current gen VR headsets are brilliant with desktop 3D games. There are some games that were released in side by side 3D like Crysis 3. Looks stunning in VR with virtual desktop. I can play most of my games with Virtual desktop and Tridef 3D on my old machine. If Nvidia would sell a 3D wrapper for VR, it wouyld sell. The Emagine z800 was only 800*600 but in 3D the resolution makes those old games look like they are at a much higher resolution.
ast 8 years I am here. I won't go away, this is for sure. With new VR HMD and better resolution this will be even better in the future.
This is so obvious. Releasing 3DV instead of discarding costs nothing. There's no need for special "support" or any work from Nvidia. Just allow all games running in 3DV out of the box or with the community patches, to work on a virtual 3DV display. Do as little as required to allow the community do the rest. And that's it. That's not much. Virtual display has to be done for traditional games to play in VR anyway, so it's not really asking NV to put signifirant amount of work or money into it. And when high res VR becomes mainstream, the numbers will grow waaay quicker than finansists or NV boss thinks right now. Having 3DV+patches library for by that time, awesome virtual 3D screen, could be an important thing for NV and their sales of VR-related hardware (which may mean even 50% of all GPU sales at some point) There are three options. 1. Open it. 2. Turn it into a virtual reality friendly feature. [s]3. Discard [/s] ^ this seems like 2+2=? test

Just struck me and wanted to add the thought of having to play Cyberpunk 2077 in 2D fills me with dread... I probably wouldn't even bother.. I'm considering selling off my cards and upgrading to a single 2080ti but I am loathe to give Nvidia any more of my money at this point.

Bad move by nvidia! 3d vision was one of the reasons i only buy nvidia cards! its also the reason why i stopped buying new consoles! if there was no 3d vision i would've been getting amd cards instead! i have a 2080ti so i have the extra beef needed to play 3dv in 4k on my hdr 60" LG tv. but if 3dv goes why would i need something so overpowered? this may be my last card from nvidia :(

I've just shared the bad news on Blue's News. If you never visited that news site, I highly recommend you add it to your favorites, it's updated twice a day, except the weekend once a day. It covers a lot of topics I like. It's old school style but you get quick to what interest you.

Very bad decision from Nvidia, although I feared that this will happen one day. Because of 3DVision I always bought Geforce and never AMD. This may change in future.

I really wonder how many people still play 3D vision? I would say around 3000. What do you think? But of course it is a very small number, a niche product. I am happy it exists.
