Dark Souls - prepare to die edition, DSfix help
  1 / 2
Has anyone got the DSfix to work with this? This game is locked at 30FPS which is too low for me. I am trying to use it for the FPS unlock but it crashes out immediately. Helix fix works (naturally). I have tried this with and without the Helix fix. Any ideas?

I've heard the 60fps unlock is glitchy, as the game is timed to 30fps. So I haven't tried. I got SMAA antialiasing to work using DSfix though. I put it and the associated files in the DATA folder, opened the DSfix text file, and deleted everything below antiasliasing. Then saved. It looks like a great game though. I too just started it today, thanks to last month's Steam sale and the Helix mod.

Will you let me know how you got it to run above 30 FPS if you manage to do so. I can't play it at 30 :(

Hello mate Thanks for this. I tried that setting but my FPS is still 30. Are you defo getting >30? Your abovementioned setting even says unlocked = 0 I wasn't sure about the "AA bits" though... Thanks!

hello Andy, you're welcome I didn't bother with FPS because it was remarquably smooth (no stuttering) almost all the time (sometime in the forest due to Ao or DOF blur resolution perhaps settings I think) but indeed I just checked with Fraps and I was locked at 30 fps so I unlocked it in DSfix and it works fine, I gained only a few FPS (between 5 and 10) because of my GTX660 OC limitation.

If it's crashing with the 60fps unlock as soon as you start the game, you have to disable Windows DEP. Enter this into command prompt.
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
then restart your PC and you should be golden.

Even after you restarted your PC? Hmm. You should go into DSFix and just toggle the unlock off and see if it crashes. If it only crashes when the FPS unlock is on then the FPS unlock is absolutely the issue, and that means we'll have to look into checking other ways if Windows DEP is disabled.

Yup, restarted. unlockFPS 0 <-- no crash unlockFPS 1 <-- crash Is there another way to tell if Windows DEP is disabled? edit I will try again, this time going to the root of the command prompt...

Resurrecting an old thread here rather than cluttering the board with a new one. Anyway, trying to play the first Dark Souls with 3D Vision, DSFix 2.4 and the latest helix mod and having some problems. The big issue is stuttering and framerate drops as you travel about, like it's loading in the new areas, and there's some odd speed-up/slow-down problem, where the gameplay speed isn't consistent. I know Dark Souls was a ropey PC port, but I don't remember having these problems last time I played this in 3D. I have the framerate unlocked to 60 btw. I was thinking maybe it's the current batch of drivers, or maybe it was always like this? Using a 970 and 353.62 drivers under W7. Also on a side note, although 3D Vision forces v-sync on, there's clear tearing and I have to force v-sync on via the nvidia control panel.

I'd probably try older drivers, these latest ones seem to have a few issues. 347.88 is my current favourite, though I've not tried it with DS.

Thanks. Just tried 347.88 but it didn't help sadly. With 3D Vision off the stuttering isn't there. Interestingly with 3D Vision on but the 3D effect turned off (with ctrl+T), the stutters are still there, so it's not just a performance issue. They even happen with both the helix fix and DSFix removed, but with 3D Vision on. Seems like it's something the 3D Vision driver is doing. They seem to happen at the same point in the levels, like on stairs or going through doorways, but they happen more if you're rotating the camera as you move. The game shouldn't be having issues streaming the level from an SSD. It's not just framerate drops, because as soon as you stop moving the FPS goes back to 60.

fish99: I had the same problem half a year ago with my 970 sli with 3dvision + dsfix/helixmod. Almost drove me mad trying to identify the problem. Then I found that disabling some of the HID-devices in device manager did the trick. Smooth as silk after that.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't help. I tried disabling all the HID devices and still the same stuttering. I've tried pretty much everything at this point, short of an OS reinstall.
