Tip: switching off disturbing effects when not offered by the in-game settings; Damnation, Velvet As
1 / 2
Unfortunately some games use post-effects and filters to produce bloom or blur effects that cause severe gosthing and are very disturbing when You want to play in 3d (I use the GeForce 3D Vision-Samsung-Bundle). Even worse, there often is no way to deactivate these effects by the in-game settings. I managed to solve this problem for the games Damnation (bloom), Velvet Assassin (bloom) and Collin McRae Dirt (shadows). I`m absolutely no expert concerning graphics (and ENGLISH!), I just solved the problems with try & error. But perhaps my solutions can help You to find methods to make other games more suitable for 3d. Please share them with us! And tell me when there are more elegant solutions for Damnation, Velvet Assassin and DiRT than mine!
Damnation: in reviews not rated very high, but as a platform game with wide landscapes interesting for 3d-gameplay.
Problem: Disturbing bloom-effect I could not switch off by in-game settings.
Solution: Edit the file DamnEngine.ini in ...:\Users\....\Documents\My Games\Damnation\DamnGame\Config (Vista). Find the following passage and change the entries to:
...
[SystemSettings]
MotionBlur=False
DepthOfField=False
Bloom=False
QualityBloom=False
Distortion=False
DropParticleDistortion=False
…
When You play the game now the disturbing bloom effects should be removed.
Velvet Assassin: in reviews also not rated very high, but as an stealth action game with claustrophobic and atmospheric settings very interesting for 3d-gameplay.
Problem: Unfortunately atmospheric also means a lot of post effects You can´t simply turn off.
Solution: I couldn't identify a game.ini that allowed me to switch off these effects like in Damnation. But I found a folder where these effects are defined: ..:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\velvet assassin\FX\PostFX
I moved the following files to a backup folder:
closekill_approach.pfx
closekill_cam.pfx
closekilLend.pfx
damage_impact.pfx
damage_impact_hard.pfx
death_cam.pfx
directional_blur.pfx
Dotbl.pfx
Dotb2.pfx
Fade_from_white.pfx
FTG1.pfx
FTG2.pfx
glow.pfx
glow_strong.pfx
LaIo1.pfx
LaIo2.pfx
LB1.pfx
Lost1.pfx
morphine_mode.pfx
pause_blur.pfx
standard_default.pfx
TM1.pfx
TM2.pfx
TM3.pfx
Then I replaced the moved files with a copy of the file None.pfx with the name of the file I had moved. Example: move glow.pfx to a backup folder, make a copy of None.pfx an place it in the folder ..:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\velvet assassin\FX\PostFX. Rename this copy to glow.pfx.
Attention: I didn´t test which files exactly are responsible for disturbing bloom effects (one of them are glow.pfx and glow_strong.pfx). But as I also didn`t like the other effects like
damage_impact.pfx or closekill_cam.pfx (both red filters) I simply removed them all. Attention: some in-game indicators about Your status are removed by this way. Nevertheless the game is still playable - and looks much better and realistic.
Collin McRae Dirt: playing in 3d I became a fan of racing games. The perception of speed is so impressive that You don't need a motion blur effect any more to simulate speed rush - You simply feel it!
Problem: incorrect placement of shadows, really irritating.
Solution: Unfortunately You can't turn off the shadows using the in-game settings, You can only adjust their quality. To turn them off edit the file hardware_settings_config.xml in the folder
..:\Users\Public\Documents\Codemasters\DiRT\hardwaresettings (Vista).
Change the phrase shadows enabled="true" to shadows enabled="false"
and
dynamic_ambient_occ enabled="true" to dynamic_ambient_occ enabled="false"
Now the disturbing shadows are removed. Luckily the shadows in the game are not removed completely. There still remain some pre-rendered shadows. So the landscape doesn't look to strange and rushing through it You won´t miss the shadows - especially when they don't irritate You any more.
So far my experiences.
A problem I couldn't solve are incorrect placed glow effects of some light sources in Splinter Cell Double Agent. I couldn't identify an .ini-file to switch off these effects. Removing/changing the files in ...:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent\SCDA-Offline\System\Shaders\HLSL didn't help. Any idea what else I could try?

Great! /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbup:' />
So the driver itself is able to switch off disturbing effects...?
Are there plans to support the Splinter Cell Series, too? I think they are quite popular ;)
Another game to polish:
Rise of the Argonauts
There is already a profile for that game. But You can significantly improve the quality by switching off disturbing shadows and bloom:
Edit the file LiquidEngine.ini in the folder ...:\Users\...\Documents\My Games\Rise of the Argonauts\LiquidGame\Config (Vista) and change the following settings:
...
[SystemSettings]
...
DynamicShadows=False
LightEnvironmentShadows=True
....
MotionBlur=False
DepthOfField=False
AmbientOcclusion=True
Bloom=False
QualityBloom=False
Distortion=False
DropParticleDistortion=False
...
LensFlares=False
....
Now the irritating shadow on the characters is removed. As only characters had shadows the overall impression remains the same. Setting AmbientOcclusion=True seems to make shadowed areas a bit darker and more realistic. Switching of bloom makes the sky and background much clearer. Unfortunately I couldn't find out how to switch of the disturbing ghosting effects when there is water in the background...
Damantion and Rise of the Argonauts use both the unreal engine. So it should be possible to remove disturbing effects in other games using the popular unreal engine in a similar matter by editing the .ini-file.

Yes, but what happens if you cannot disable that particular feature in an easy way like just turning it off from an in-game Config menu, but have to do it manually by editing configuration files or even having to edit/replace shaders of something even more harder... I remember that the first demo I saw of the 3D Vision some time ago I read in the in-game pop-up message that I have to disable something in COD: WaW and in order to do that I had to edit the config file of the game. That's something that is quite easy for me, because I'm an advanced user, but a lot of people out there are not... ;)
Not to mention the problem with using Nvidia's lasersight in some games like COD or Left 4 Dead (and maybe some other games) and you are aiming up close, you might have not noticed that, but the lasersight jumps a bit while aiming and that is quite annoying (at least for me)... I'm not sure if it is fixed in the latest 186.18 drivers, but in the previous version it was still present.
We cannot programmatically control effects in most games.
:(
As there often is no way to deactivate disturbing effects by in-game settings it seems the only way to get rid of them is editing .ini files or removing/replacing effect files...
As mentioned before I'm not an expert and just look for keywords in the game files.
These keywords are bloom, blur, depthOfField, distortion, glow, fog.
Do You know other keywords describing effects that can affect the 3d perception? That would help me a lot to look for solutions...
Another (silliy?) question: are these effects caused by post effects, filters or shaders...?
Sitll hope to find a solution for Splinter Cell Double Agent... /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />
By the way: 3D Vision is absolutely great!!! Some games that are rated not very high in game reviews and I wouldn't have played in 2D are now a great experience for me - simply because of the new perspective. Thank You /thumbup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':thumbup:' />
On editing .ini-files: as a 3D solution is not very cheap (yet) I think that someone who buys it is "nerd" enough to know how to handle a simple txt-editor ;) The problem is to find out which lines You have to change /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

Using the modifications mentioned above I would rate it good or even excellent.

Tip for Collin McRae Dirt 2
If You set the shadow quality to max You will see that all the shadows are placed correctly besides from some diffuse shadows around the cars.
To remove these diffuse shadows You have to edit the file hardware_settings_config.xml in the folder C:\Users\[YourName]\Documents\My Games\DiRT2\hardwaresettings with a text editor.
Change the phrase

Two other games that offer a much better S3D experience when You change .ini files:
Prince of Persia Warrior within and Prince of Persia The Two Thrones
Open the file Hardware.ini in the game folders (...\Program Files\Ubisoft\Prince of Persia T2T or ...\Program Files\Ubisoft\Prince of Persia Warrior Within) and change
PixelFog=1 to PixelFog=0
BlurFX=1 to BlurFX=0
This will remove disturbing blur and bloom effects so that the games offer a good or almost excellent S3D quality.
You should also deaktivate water effects in the in-game settings.
In POP T2T I also set special effects to low.

Divinity II (Ego draconis and Flames of Vengeance)
The trunk of some trees in this game look very strange (halo, wrong texture). This was very irritating so I've tried to solve this problem. Unfortunately I only could find a solution that seems to me to be the lesser evil.
If You look at the trees while approaching to them You will recognize that the problem with the halo only appears when they are within a certain distance (switching from low to high level details). When they are far away they look OK. So I lowered the value when they switch from the far distance detail level to near distance level.
To do that You have to change the value for TreeQualityMultiplier in the file graphicoptions.xml in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Divinity 2\Profile (for Win 7).
The only problem: in the far distance detail level the trees are rendered as flat 2D objects, have low resolution and stuttering animations. Also the leaves of the big trees with no halo problems are affected. If You set TreeQualityMultiplier="0" there will be no halo at all but the trees and leaves look quite ugly all the time. So I've chosen TreeQualityMultiplier="0.15". Now the leaves of the big trees are still detailed when You look at them from near distance. The halo effect will still appear. But it only will be noticed if You are directly heading to a small tree. If You pass them the switch to halo will only appear in the corner of Your eye.
As mentioned this is only the lesser evil. If You choose an isometric perspective and mostly see the trunks of the trees without the crowns this could be better then the halo trunks You have with the original settings.
BTW: After installing the addon Flames of Vengeancethe game always crashed when I tried to play a savegame from Ego draconis. So I would recommend to install the addon only if You have completed Ego draconis. As in story telling Flames of Vengeance is a sequel to Ego draconis this is not a huge problem.
Update:
Finally I could find a more satisfying solution for the problem with the weird trees: I'm using the experimental iZ3D driver (see http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=198856&st=0&gopid=1232256&). Now the trees are displayed correctly.

One of my favorite games is
Singles 2 Triple Trouble
Unfortunately I had problems with the chars and some other objects not being displayed in 3D but in 2D (like a HUD).
Now I have found the solution:
Edit the file shaderConfig.fxi in the folder ...\Program Files\Singles2\Effect.
Change
#define CHARACTER_VERTEX_SHADER vs_2_sw
to
#define CHARACTER_VERTEX_SHADER vs_2_0
Now the chars are displayed correctly the game provides an excellent 3D experience /biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':biggrin:' />

MotionBlur=False
DepthOfField=False

Damnation: in reviews not rated very high, but as a platform game with wide landscapes interesting for 3d-gameplay.
Problem: Disturbing bloom-effect I could not switch off by in-game settings.
Solution: Edit the file DamnEngine.ini in ...:\Users\....\Documents\My Games\Damnation\DamnGame\Config (Vista). Find the following passage and change the entries to:
...
[SystemSettings]
MotionBlur=False
DepthOfField=False
Bloom=False
QualityBloom=False
Distortion=False
DropParticleDistortion=False

Edit the file LiquidEngine.ini in the folder ...:\Users\...\Documents\My Games\Rise of the Argonauts\LiquidGame\Config (Vista) and change the following settings:
...
[SystemSettings]
...
DynamicShadows=False
LightEnvironmentShadows=True
....
MotionBlur=False
DepthOfField=False
AmbientOcclusion=True
Bloom=False
QualityBloom=False
Distortion=False
DropParticleDistortion=False
...
LensFlares=False

My 3D Vision Blog - 3dvision-blog.com
:(
As there often is no way to deactivate disturbing effects by in-game settings it seems the only way to get rid of them is editing .ini files or removing/replacing effect files...
By the way: 3D Vision is absolutely great!!! Some games that are rated not very high in game reviews and I wouldn't have played in 2D are now a great experience for me - simply because of the new perspective. Thank You
On editing .ini-files: as a 3D solution is not very cheap (yet) I think that someone who buys it is "nerd" enough to know how to handle a simple txt-editor ;) The problem is to find out which lines You have to change

Using the modifications mentioned above I would rate it good or even excellent.
So give the game a chance!
