playing games on hdtv Sound but no graphics when trying to play games
Hi,
I have a Nvidia geforce 9800 GT 1gb graphics card 2.88ghz quad core processor, 6gb RAM running windows vista 32bit. I have the graphics card linked to a toshiba 1080p tv through a HDMI cable and all works fine until i come to play games.
When a game loads i get an error message saying unsupported mode, i can hear the game just not see it. I have tried changing the resolution in the settings but the ones the game would probably like the tv does not and the whole screen goes off and i can't even see windows.
I have updated the drivers and this has not fixed the problem. I have tried contacting the game developers and they don't know why so i can only assume it's a problem with the graphics card not the game.
The games in question are empire total war, medieval 2 total war and sims 3. I have managed to get sims 3 working by going into the game options file in programme files and changing the resolution there before loading the game and this works but the other games do not have these files for me to change.
I am completely lost, can anyone help???
Thanks
Ps the games do work if plugging in through a VGA cable but i cannot have both VGA and HDMI plugged in at the same time and would rather use HDMI.

Are you going to use 3d vision on this tv? If so, does your tv support 120hz? I play on the 2233rz so idk what cables to use with HDTVs but I am assuming you still need to run it through DVI.

not all games or resolutions works on a tv. I had a monitor where the native resolution is 1440*900 at 75hz. When I launched GT legend, it would do like you said "mode not supported"...so the way around it, I went into my control panel and selected 1440*900 at 60hz. Worked .
Now for the TV, some games may not accept the 1080p resolution or the frequency of your TV. Try the nvidia control panel and try to find a common setup between desktop and games. Takes a bit of time, but it should work.
I am using a 42" TV with a VGA connector at 1280*1024 @60HZ. Works with all the games. The next one 1367 (something like that) works also. However, 1440*900 does not.

Thanks for the reply but i have tried finding a common resolution but ones the games like the TV doesnt and ones the TV likes the game doesnt.
I know the games support 1080 as it did work when it was first installed for one game but since wont load no matter how many time i reinstall it. I have also spoken to the devloper and they say there is no reason it shouldn't work. With Sims 3 i could change the resolution in the options file before loading the game. With total war i cannot find this file.
The games does work through VGA cable but not HDMI but i would like to run it through HDMI otherwise i have to keep switching the cables to get full HD when doing all other things on the PC.
