3D Vision and the GTX Titan X
  8 / 8
The 980 is a beast of a card and I was really happy with it, I only upgraded from it because: 1) I had a lot of spare cash burning a hole in my pocket 2) I run the ROG SWIFT in 3D 3) I wanted to try out 4k 5) I built a new PC and wanted a big enough upgrade to make me say "OMG WOW LOLZ!" 6) I don't use my 3D projector any more, so 1440p is now my bottom line, and I'm interested in VR so I need something as powerful as possible A 980 should be more than sufficient for 720 3D and decent framerates and AA settings.
I think we'd both be pretty happy with a cheapish 980. Here is one of the best comparison sites I know, AnandTech Bench: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1493?vs=1442 This is 780 vs. 980. And you can see it's a hell of a good bump. I use the 1440p benchmarks as a very rough proxy of what I expect a 3D system to run. (since it's all 2D benchmarks.)
thanks for that bo3b, think the 980 might be sufficient, my trusty old i5 2500 could also be an issue though so might look at upgrading that soon as well

It's probably not worth upgrading unless you really have to (IMO).

I will probably go with the 980 and see how things go. Thanks!

I think I need to take a bit of a backwards step with the GPU upgrade, after doing some tests I think my i5 2500 is being a major bottleneck in my system. with my 780 I am only getting 40 to 60% use in games like witcher 2, alien isolation, skyrim, farcry 3 etc, I cant get 780 above that, the CPU is going full bast 100% at 4.5 overclock. I am wondering if the i5 is damaged as I keep hearing again and again that this CPU shouldn't bottleneck. I have had my current set up a while so am tempted just to upgrade to a new CPU set up before getting a new card. I got a feeling that a new GPU wont be utilized. I realise this is probably not the best thread to ask but continuing from my discussion any quick tips on a CPU that would work well with a 980?

Normally I go for a 4 core chip, no hyperthreading, but with the advent of recent games, it looks like HT will actually be useful in gaming. Normally i5 overclocks better than i7, but it's too variable, and so i7 is probably the call today. But... that Haswell is not significantly different from your i5 2500. You could expect to gain maybe 20% there from your overclock to a i5-4690K overclock. It's not a giant leap. Moreover, tech magazines and blogs suggest waiting for Skylake at the moment. It's also not a big bump, but it's literally a couple of months, so you might as well get the latest. Seems to me that your CPU is misbehaving, as I also would not expect a CPU bottleneck on Alien Isolation in particular. Witcher2 is also not known to be CPU demanding. Check your temps- you have a pretty extreme overclock there, and if the CPU is overheating, it will cycle in and out of performance, throttling. This would manifest as still functional, but much slower than expected. Run Prime95. Stress test it, watch for errors, watch for temps. Especially if this is an old build, and you've run 4.5G for a long time, the thermal paste can get baked and perform poorly. If it does seem like temps, you can likely fix it by just reinstalling your cooler. It's not likely a hardware/CPU failure.

I found a reasonably priced (relatively speaking) Titan X and after I sold one of my 780's pretty much got it for the price of a 980ti so I am happy. I'll probably add another at some stage soon since I want to do 3d surround. I haven't noticed any issues with 3dvision with this card other than what's global. Performance is a fair bit better than my previous 780 SLI configuration on a single screen and depending on the game and much better if the title has poor SLI support. Surrounds about the same, and looking like I'll need to add another to really seriously consider 3d vision gaming in surround. Ultimately I'm happy with my purchase as it allows me to use some of the older drivers. My biggest problem with the 980ti right now is being locked into bad drivers
