Non-3D movies in 3D question
I have friends that have 3D TVs capable of... "emulating" let's say, 3D on non-3D things. With that feature they can watch, for example, the news, cooking shows, sitcoms and things of the like in 3D. They told me that 3D is not great but it works. Now my question is, is there a way to achieve the same on the PC with 3D Vision? I'd like to watch the movie Hellraiser (and others too) but it's not available in 3D. Is there a way to emulate the 3D here like there's on 3D TVs?

I believe PowerDVD does it. But trust me, it's not worth watching something in fake 3D like that.

I can only imagine ... 3D Blus are bad in comparison to 3D Vision, Post-Processed 3D Blus are bad in comparison to 3D Blus and 'Emulated' 3D is bad in comparison to Post-Processed 3D Blus. It gets to the point of just as long as it looks different it's '3D' ... I'm breaking out the RealD 3D glasses! B)

Yeah, PowerDVD can do it, but I really don't recommend it - I actually feel nauseous trying to watch something like that as it has a tendency to invert and distort the 3D just as often (if not more often) as it manages to fluke getting it right. Here's a few screenshots of it butchering Babylon 5. I increased the 3D setting to the maximum to better demonstrate these issues (though they will be harder to see in a smaller window like this). These kind of distortions are clearly visible even with a lower 3D setting. Immediately after a scene cut is when it is at it's worst, then it gets a little better over the next few seconds, but some things start getting overly exaggerated (note the clothing in some of these screenshots) and some things it just never gets right and remain inverted: Scene mostly flat with some distortion. Torsos are further back than the rest of their bodies. Example of how it copes on a close up shot. 3D on the right is OK, but background on the left is rendered at the same depth as Susan's face. Example of stereo inversion - the person walking past the blue light is being drawn behind the light. In the background the spotlight hitting an extra's shirt is causing him to be rendered in the foreground. Another example of a close up. Not too bad, except Londo's hair is being rendered as part of the background. Season 1 intro cinematic. The star fury is being drawn behind the station. Another space shot - the starfield depth is distorted and too close. Multiple depth errors in this scene - the whole thing just looks wrong. Note the depth inversion on G'Kar's clothing and the fact that his face is flat except for his eyes and forehead which stick out too far. Another wide scene with lots of depth errors - control panel lights in foreground, railing in background, Susan is flat except for her face and hands, background is distorted. Another space shot - the planet is being drawn in front of the station and star fury. Mid-shot of Susan showing that the leather on her uniform is overly exaggerated and too far forward, and most of her face is distorted and inverted. Thanks for the reply everyone. Yes, you're right. It's terrible. Just out of curiosity, I tried the first few minutes of the movie Last Vegas and that fake 3D almost destroyed my eyes. Too bad it doesn't work. Guess I won't be watching Pamela Anderson in 3D in the movie Barb Wire.

You could try playing a standard movie in 2D with separation in StereoScopic player or nVidia 3D player. Basically, because of the separation, the image will seem pushed into the screen at infinite depth, and will feel like you are watching it on a huge cinema screen. No 3D involved, just separation. It is an interesting experience on a monitor... not so much if you have a projector...

@ DarkStarSword: Of all the potential examples you happened to pick my all-time favorite show! Sweet! But yeah, my Samsung TV has this pseudo-3D feature, and I've activated it about all of ten minutes. It is completely useless, and isn't messed up only in certain examples... it's messed up on everything.
