Battlefield Bad Company 2 BC2 Choppy
Hi all, I know this game was probably touched on, but I searched in here and couldn't find my answer. I just got my laptop, xps 17 6gigs of ram, 1 gig of video, 7200 rpm sata, 3D vision. I have Battlefield Bad Company 2 and cranked it up and the 3d is beautiful in it. But I cant get it to be smooth when I move/look around/change weapons, etc. I tried turning down the resolution (its 1900x1080p 120mhz) and I still have pretty bad chopiness. Enough that I can't play it like that. Can someone share what the optimal settings are for this? Appreciate it....

quite simply, i don't know if the 550m has the power needed for bc2 in 3d. stuff like this is why i will never purchase a 'gaming' laptop. no, sir, i don't trust it. however, i am no master on 3d perf, i'm just guessing based on 550m compared to 2d system req's for bc2. best of luck!

Make sure the option for HBAO is turned off in game, it does nothing in 3D and has a massive performance hit. Otherwise I agree with the other poster, laptops = t3h suck. It takes something along the lines of my computer to play BC2 @ 1920x1080 smoothly with everything maxed -- quad core 4.0GHz, dual 460GTXs in SLI.

So I have a new computer with 3D, and the video card is junk for 3D, am I understanding this correct?

Don't listen to the naysayers, but they are right - to an extent.

It depends on the game and how optimized the graphics engine is. You can't expect a laptop to play every game on max settings @ 1080p. Especially in 3D mode. Your laptop will do fine in 2D mode at highest settings, but even the desktop computers with single GPUs struggle to render games at the highest settings in 3D stereo. Witcher 2 is VERY demanding on hardware (especially single GPUs) and Shogun 2 is another high profile game that is just too slow with a single GPU (in stereo).

I just recently bought a laptop with the ATI Radeon 6850 installed with 3D and I do have to adjust settings in certain games. Dead Island is HIGHLY optimized and runs @ consistent 30fps with all details MAX in 3D on my laptop. However, I have to turn off SSAO and tone down texture filtering in Deus Ex in order to play it at good fps (40s+). And that's without 3D mode (even though the 3D implementation is ****)!! Bioshock 2 and Team Fortress 2 work very well at high settings in 3D stereo.

It all depends on the game basically.

Great, good to know. What settings should I adjust depending on the game? Can you give me some info on what to set the card at in nvidia control panel and what game settings to look for/adjust that will make it run more smoothly?

Like I mentioned make sure HBOA is off. Set AA to 2x at most. Shadows at medium will pick up a few FPS without much visual quality loss too.

I wouldn't even think about AA; while keeping in mind that you will get used to jaggies after awhile, if you aren't already. I'd also try and change the game to directX 9 by editing the lines in one of the game files or using one of the mods that help you change settings that aren't available in the menu.

The DX9 suggestion is a great idea as well. Turning AA completely off will certainly help, but it will noticeably reduce the visual quality. Luckily playing in 3D kind of has a natural anti-aliasing effect anyways, so it wouldn't be as bad as no AA in 2d...

Play using 120hz. I have notice that playing in 100hz cause not smooth gameplay.
