Tomb Raider 2013 3D Stutter - My 3D pain!
I am experiencing what I guess is micro stutter in Tomb Raider 2013. I use a single card set up. I just recently upgraded to a GTX780 over a 580. It stuttered with the 580, movement was not smooth at all although the frame rate was stuck at 60fps. What I noticed was that when I installed the 780 there was no improvement on this at all. In fact I have not noticed a lot of gain in using the 780 over the 580 in general, while using 3D vision. I was using driver 314 with the 580 and am now using the latest driver 335 with the 780. What I am finding with 3D is that it is a major ball ache getting games to work, you really have to set up each game individually and play them until you have to change all the settings again for the next game you want to play. So right now I am forgetting all my other games in order to get Tomb Raider working! I believe the effect is worth it but I am getting to the point where its just too time consuming getting 3D games working. Anyway, my processor is an over clocked i5, 3.8Ghz and as mentioned is running a single 780. I wondered about my processor being to weak for the newer games as well, but like I say, the fps stays at 60, its just the jerky stuttering movement that seems to be the problem. thank for any advice

TR2013 - surely one of my favorites from last year. Here are a few generalized hints that could be applied to any game: - If there is a Vsync setting in game don't use it. Use rather the adaptive or forced on vsync setting in NCP instead. Some games (including this one) will perform better. - Always start with the lowest visual settings you can. This can give you a baseline. For example: The 'fancy hair' (I forget what its called) can chew up a bunch of performance. With all the settings on LOW you can run the in game benchmark or experiment/replay early sections of the game to get a feel as to how your rig performs. With 3DVision enabled, low enough settings and enough HP to drive the game you ought to be getting ~60/60/60 (MIN/MAX/AVG) on the in game benchmark before playing. - Keep in mind that there are places (and entire sections: "shanty town" comes to mind) where your frame rate will drop for no visual/apparent reason, this is normal and mostly everyone experiences these in this game. - PC gaming (to an extent) and S3D gaming has always been like this as there is a wide range of CPU's "out in the wild" for developers to contend with and even wider range of GPU ability for them to develop for. It is expected that the user/player has to fine tune the graphic settings for their rig and individual visual quality (eye candy) and FPS preferences. Generally developers will allow us to "run" the game @ 30FPS on very very weak rigs with mostly or entirely gimped settings and thankfully include settings and visual elements that may give those with top-of-the-line PC gaming hardware a decent challenge or at least a good workout.

I felt little stuttering in mouse movement while playing Tomb Raider; enabling smooth mouse and reducing sensitivity helped, then I discovered that stuttering is much less annoying when I play with controller (in other games as well).

Thanks for the tips. I have tried some but the jerkiness is still there when looking around. Its strange because when moving forward, backward and strafing its smooth, but when looking around with mouse it stutters. so it seems not to be a performance issue, a mouse issue. but I tried a pad and its the same, when looking it stutters, moving forwards and backwards fine.

This really needs to be stickied. It's a bug. DO use the in game vsync. Each time you boot up in game you need to switch it to double buffering, then back to triple buffering. Game will run smooth after that.

After fiddling around I have managed to reduce the stuttering to a degree where I can play the game. I disabled some of the graphics settings but [b]the main problem was the V Sync.[/b] Disabling VSync in the NCP seemed to erase the problem. A schoolboy error you might say but I hadn’t noticed as my other games played ok with it on. VSync is also off in the game options so I don’t know what that’s about as it seems smoother without. I never thought I would say this but I might have to use pad for this game. Its obviously designed with a pad in mind so playing with mouse would just seems an uphill struggle, it just doesn’t feel right. I am a mouse user but its getting to the point they just wont sort out these console ports so that they are usable with a mouse. It’s still not perfectly smooth but nevertheless I am looking forward to getting into the game as the 3D effect is pretty awesome.. EDIT - just to add, using the pad didn't eliminate the problem, looking with the pad also stuttered until I disabled the vsync in all options.

I also had stuttering issues in tomb raider with both xbox controller and mouse although fps were constantly at 60 with vsync enabled. I found out that this problem is indeed related to vsync in 3d vision mode because it is not properly limiting the fps to 60. You have to use a frame limiter to get rid of all the stuttering. The only one which worked for me was the MSI After Burner bundled with the Riva Tuner Statistic Server. Just set FPS limit to 60 in Riva Tuner Statistic Server and everything is smooth now. This also works for the stuttering in Left 4 Dead 2 + enabled vsync.
