can i get a bit of buying advice for a 3d projector that will work with 3d vision?

So would you or anyone else in the 3d vision community cared if I tried playing resident evil 5 or just cause 2 or some other old game in 3d vision and I told you it didn't work due to some recent directx changes or modern GPU changes or something? I don't think so because you guys have had 3d vision for years and played all these games already. So if I'm going to pay for a 3d projector or something else for no reason but to game in 3D, I need a bit more certainty that the tools are going to work now and work in the future.

No, I didn't wanted to sound like that;)
Nvidia didn't break our fixes;) 99% of the time, it was the developers with "updates". But, we always went back and re-fixed them;) Updating a fix is WAAAAY easier than MAKING one;) Trust me;) (Unless we are talking about a couple of "special games" like Rise of the Tomb Raider where you basically have to play the game again 0-100% to get all the shaders out;) and is time consuming ^_^ But this is the only example I can give you).
Is not a purely "plug & play" experience;) You will need to familiarise yourself with how the Geforce driver works and the game profiles;) Not a bit thing, if you know a bit about software and PCs in general;)
I never gave up fixes (although I did say about it a couple of times, for other personal reasons), but I still release them to this date:) and I also try to maintain them (Like the Battlefield 1 fix, or DOOM(2016), Witcher 3 and many others)
Once you experience it, you will never want to go back;) While VR is awesome for what it offers, it lacks the graphic fidelity we came to love in 3D Vision;) I would LOVE and spend 2k pounds on a VR setup just to play Battlefield 1 in VR for example;) But, developers are a bit afraid to push and currently, it seems VR picks up in other, non-gaming, areas :(

In any case, 3D Vision and VR address different "worlds" ;) So, you will lose nothing by going both 3D Vision and VR way. Currently, 3D Vision is better developed, we have the tools and the 400+ games fixed, while VR has what it has;)
Regarding DX12:
Things are BLURRY there... Nvidia states that 3D Vision works in DX12 (and I can get it work in ROTTR for example) but SLI is missing. Other people report that 3D Vision (while works) in DX12, offers abysmal performance :(
Like in the past, if is a bug and reproducible, I can always fill in a bug and chase it with Nvidia and (eventually) we will get it fixed;) But, currently DX12 is NOT a big thing (like Vulkan). Awesome in theory, but not mainstream;) Once this changes, I bet Nvidia will be ready and we can always do our part and help out;)
(For the record: Nvidia is fully aware of our community and what we are doing here. Part of the reason they are still maintaining this technology. They will always try to help and fix bugs, if we report them properly and communicate with them in a professional manner. While 3D Vision is now considered "old tech" - 6+ years - they are still maintaining it;) Probably they know exactly what they have here;) But can't make investors/publishers/developer to commit to old tech;) )

If you want 3D and you are worried about the fixes and worried about investing in a projector, just get a 4K 3D TV, coz then you always have the option to play in 4K 2d or in 3D, it is a win-win option, you can use the TV for anything else, watching 4k movies etc. It is easier to setup than a projector that also requires some more tweaking I think. There is more ghosting in a TV but as I said you can use the TV for other things and 4k content. If you are not a sort of "hardcore" 3D vision player already, then i don't see the reason to want a projector. If you really liked 3D Vision to the point of investing in a projector, you wouldn't make these comments, so i think in your case you might be better of with a TV instead.

Hehe my opinion is opposite - get a projector, make a dark room, put giant 120+ inches screen and enjoy movies games etc like you will never be able to do with a small tv - even 4k :) But yeah there are requirements for PJ to really shine - light controlled room, dark ceiling/floor/walls near the screen etc. But result is awesome if you have all of that - for movies, games in 2d and most of all for games in 3d :)

BenQ came out with some decently priced projectors earlier this year that claim to have an all-new premium glass optical system.
Most budget projectors have plastic lenses. These tend to be slightly out of focus until they reach operating temperature.

- I have an Optoma GT1080e on the way, but it doesn't come with any 3D glasses, considering it's DLP, do I need to get an RF transmitter (plus RF active glasses), or any IR DLP glass would work right away with 3DTV Play without a need for additional hardware?
In regards to the above question, I would like to know in what scenario would the 3D Glasses won't be synced with 3DTV Play? I mean as long as they sync with the projector, they should work with 3DTV Play, right?
- In regards to 1080p, wasn't there a checkerboard option to make games render at 1080p @ 60FPS in 3D? That was a long time ago when I researched about this, so I would like to know what happened to that option with projectors?
- I assume there's no EDID override and stuff like that available, right?
- Would games like GTA V, Dues EX: MD, etc even need anything from Nvidia? I mean as far as I am aware, these games provide 3D independent of Nvidia's drivers.
- I imagine with DLP, there's almost zero crosstalk even if you extend the convergence to max, right?
- How's TriDef? Does it get any updates nowadays? Does it allow 1080p @ 60hx for 3D?

With this projector you can use DLP-link glasses, no emitter required since it's white flash based.
Or you can buy an external emitter to plug on the VESA 3D Sync output and use other types of glasses (IR if you use an IR emitter, RF if you use an RF emitter).
The 3D glasses sync with the projector. You must send the picture in a 3D format the projector understands and the projector will activate the glasses.
The projector supports hdmi1.4a 3D standard inputs but not much more. No checkerboard support.
Notice that the manual only states 1080i60 side by side and top over bottom not 1080p.
I do not know if it is just copied from the hdmi minimum specs but 1080p is still available, or if it is truly limited.
3DTV play would output either 1080p24 or 720p60 frame packing hdmi 3D resolutions. Not 1080p60.
3DTV play chooses the resolution automatically based on your desktop resolution before you launch the game and the game's resolution.
Tridef receives rare updates (every few months). The last one was last month and provided profiles for a few games (not the most recent). So the software is still alive, but not very healthy.
Tridef is able to output any resolution as long as your computer is capable of sending it to the projector.
Side by side and top/bottom are available and very reliable.
I haven't tested Hdmi frame packing mode with an NVidia card (Tridef hands the picture over to the Windows/DirectX 3D output, which in turn hands it over to NVidia 3D Vision/3DTV play). (Windows 8 or later)
I believe there is a conflict with 3DTV play which causes issues but I haven't checked in a long time, so I'm not up the speed with the current situation.

Plastic optics has Nothing to do with image sailing wit heat, or atleast is not the only and main factor.
Plastic optics is more leikely just not to give even sharpness on the image.
I have had Panasonic ax200 and mutsubishi hc5/hc9000 those models all suffered from sailing optics. And you could buy 8-10 BenQ unity with hc9000s Price when it was first launch

I was aware that the GT1080e would work with IR glasses right away, but based on some stuff I read, it seemed that 3DTV Play might not sync or recognise those glasses, though fortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.
Anyway, I have the projector now, but I have yet to set it up. Hopefully things will work out fine.

helifax, thanks for the reply and all your efforts on 3d Vision. You have given me good news with nvidia and your continued efforts with 3d vision. I can now consider 3D Vision worth the effort again. I still think a projector is the best way to go about using 3D vision or is at least a lot better than any of the 3d vision monitors being offered. I bet technology is at the point now where a 3d vision headset on an OLED display could be made for $100. The OLED displays in phones are only about 70$ to make I think. I guess there's just not enough consumer interest for such a thing to happen at this point. Too many people with eye/neurological defects I guess.

Because I find 4K a bit over-hyped. I think my video card's power being used to give me better lighting and textures and such would make a bigger impact on graphics than 4K. Besides, if I saw 4K and was amazed by it it would only make me annoyed as I imagined how much more awesome it would have been to see the same graphics in 3D.

I bet technology is at the point now where a 3d vision headset on an OLED display could be made for $100. The OLED displays in phones are only about 70$ to make I think. I guess there's just not enough consumer interest for such a thing to happen at this point. Too many people with eye/neurological defects I guess.

Because I find 4K a bit over-hyped. I think my video card's power being used to give me better lighting and textures and such would make a bigger impact on graphics than 4K. Besides, if I saw 4K and was amazed by it it would only make me annoyed as I imagined how much more awesome it would have been to see the same graphics in 3D.
If you are still looking for a projector....I just bought an Epson 5040UB. This is a pricey projector to say the least, but it is the one of the best 3D experiences I have ever had. This is also an LCD projector and crosstalk was a big concern I had since I have bought many DLP projectors in the past. The picture on this projector is amazing to say the least...even @ 720p...which is mind boggling to me.
Anyway, the TB/SBS solutions that this stellar community has provided work even better. There are minimal crosstalk issues with this projector and it does accept 4k input even though it is not a native 4k projector. It will however only do 3d in the regular HDMI specs... 720p @ 60hz / 1080p 24hz and tb/sbs.
I replaced my Sony HW40ES SXRD projector with this and the 3D picture is an amazing improvement. Not to mention the 2D picture quality and the ability to accept 4k input and HDCP 2.2 compliance.
The benq that the others talked about in this thread is also really nice. But DLP has always lacked in black level and contrast so there is always a compromise. I also have an older Mitsubishi 3D vision ready DLP TV which is 1080p checkerboard and this Epson smokes that thing.
There is also words of wisdom in what these guys are saying about trial and error if you have a love for 3D. You are going to have to take some leaps of faith and see what works and looks best for you. If you buy something and you are not happy with it, send it back and buy something else until you get the result you want that is within your budget. I have been playing games in 3D since elsa released the revelator like 15 years ago and I don't even want to know how much I have spent in that time on 3D....but it is worth it to me...can't even play anything in 2D anymore. This community has spoiled me rotten...

No, I didn't wanted to sound like that;)
Nvidia didn't break our fixes;) 99% of the time, it was the developers with "updates". But, we always went back and re-fixed them;) Updating a fix is WAAAAY easier than MAKING one;) Trust me;) (Unless we are talking about a couple of "special games" like Rise of the Tomb Raider where you basically have to play the game again 0-100% to get all the shaders out;) and is time consuming ^_^ But this is the only example I can give you).
Is not a purely "plug & play" experience;) You will need to familiarise yourself with how the Geforce driver works and the game profiles;) Not a bit thing, if you know a bit about software and PCs in general;)
I never gave up fixes (although I did say about it a couple of times, for other personal reasons), but I still release them to this date:) and I also try to maintain them (Like the Battlefield 1 fix, or DOOM(2016), Witcher 3 and many others)
Once you experience it, you will never want to go back;) While VR is awesome for what it offers, it lacks the graphic fidelity we came to love in 3D Vision;) I would LOVE and spend 2k pounds on a VR setup just to play Battlefield 1 in VR for example;) But, developers are a bit afraid to push and currently, it seems VR picks up in other, non-gaming, areas :(

In any case, 3D Vision and VR address different "worlds" ;) So, you will lose nothing by going both 3D Vision and VR way. Currently, 3D Vision is better developed, we have the tools and the 400+ games fixed, while VR has what it has;)
Regarding DX12:
Things are BLURRY there... Nvidia states that 3D Vision works in DX12 (and I can get it work in ROTTR for example) but SLI is missing. Other people report that 3D Vision (while works) in DX12, offers abysmal performance :(
Like in the past, if is a bug and reproducible, I can always fill in a bug and chase it with Nvidia and (eventually) we will get it fixed;) But, currently DX12 is NOT a big thing (like Vulkan). Awesome in theory, but not mainstream;) Once this changes, I bet Nvidia will be ready and we can always do our part and help out;)
(For the record: Nvidia is fully aware of our community and what we are doing here. Part of the reason they are still maintaining this technology. They will always try to help and fix bugs, if we report them properly and communicate with them in a professional manner. While 3D Vision is now considered "old tech" - 6+ years - they are still maintaining it;) Probably they know exactly what they have here;) But can't make investors/publishers/developer to commit to old tech;) )

You asked what projector you should get, so people replied based on your question. Now it seems you are not sure you want to get a projector. If you are not sure, then doesn't help to ask which one to get? Instead, I think you should be asking what is the best way to enjoy 3D Vision without much investment for starters.

Hehe my opinion is opposite - get a projector, make a dark room, put giant 120+ inches screen and enjoy movies games etc like you will never be able to do with a small tv - even 4k :) But yeah there are requirements for PJ to really shine - light controlled room, dark ceiling/floor/walls near the screen etc. But result is awesome if you have all of that - for movies, games in 2d and most of all for games in 3d :)
Most budget projectors have plastic lenses. These tend to be slightly out of focus until they reach operating temperature.

- I have an Optoma GT1080e on the way, but it doesn't come with any 3D glasses, considering it's DLP, do I need to get an RF transmitter (plus RF active glasses), or any IR DLP glass would work right away with 3DTV Play without a need for additional hardware?
In regards to the above question, I would like to know in what scenario would the 3D Glasses won't be synced with 3DTV Play? I mean as long as they sync with the projector, they should work with 3DTV Play, right?
- In regards to 1080p, wasn't there a checkerboard option to make games render at 1080p @ 60FPS in 3D? That was a long time ago when I researched about this, so I would like to know what happened to that option with projectors?
- I assume there's no EDID override and stuff like that available, right?
- Would games like GTA V, Dues EX: MD, etc even need anything from Nvidia? I mean as far as I am aware, these games provide 3D independent of Nvidia's drivers.

With this projector you can use DLP-link glasses, no emitter required since it's white flash based.
Or you can buy an external emitter to plug on the VESA 3D Sync output and use other types of glasses (IR if you use an IR emitter, RF if you use an RF emitter).
The 3D glasses sync with the projector. You must send the picture in a 3D format the projector understands and the projector will activate the glasses.
The projector supports hdmi1.4a 3D standard inputs but not much more. No checkerboard support.
Notice that the manual only states 1080i60 side by side and top over bottom not 1080p.
I do not know if it is just copied from the hdmi minimum specs but 1080p is still available, or if it is truly limited.
3DTV play would output either 1080p24 or 720p60 frame packing hdmi 3D resolutions. Not 1080p60.
3DTV play chooses the resolution automatically based on your desktop resolution before you launch the game and the game's resolution.
Tridef receives rare updates (every few months). The last one was last month and provided profiles for a few games (not the most recent). So the software is still alive, but not very healthy.
Tridef is able to output any resolution as long as your computer is capable of sending it to the projector.
Side by side and top/bottom are available and very reliable.
I haven't tested Hdmi frame packing mode with an NVidia card (Tridef hands the picture over to the Windows/DirectX 3D output, which in turn hands it over to NVidia 3D Vision/3DTV play). (Windows 8 or later)
I believe there is a conflict with 3DTV play which causes issues but I haven't checked in a long time, so I'm not up the speed with the current situation.

Plastic optics has Nothing to do with image sailing wit heat, or atleast is not the only and main factor.
Plastic optics is more leikely just not to give even sharpness on the image.

I was aware that the GT1080e would work with IR glasses right away, but based on some stuff I read, it seemed that 3DTV Play might not sync or recognise those glasses, though fortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.
Anyway, I have the projector now, but I have yet to set it up. Hopefully things will work out fine.

3DTV play sends the 3D picture to the display, and the display is in charge of dealing with the glasses.
Your projector does not have an embedded IR emitter.
DLP-link is not IR : it is visible-light based (white flash).
If you want to use IR glasses, you need to plug an external emitter to the VESA 3D-Sync port of the projector.
The Nvidia 3D Vision glasses will not work with this projector.
