DEAD SPACE 2

Down loading now. Looking forward to checking it out. I can live with the shadows but I'm curious about the lighting and fog. Guess I'll know soon.

Turns out this game is very playable in 3d so far, I'm not to far into the game. A few issues with shadows in some areas but not to bad at all. Smoke, fog, mist effects look fine.

That's just crazy to me that people are sacrificing shadows for 3D. Don't get me wrong, I love me some 3D, but if it is fundamentally broken (shadows) it is ok to pass on playing in 3D. Shadows are a must have in a horror game like this. There are many specific set-piece moments where shadows are cast for dramatic effect. (ie a monster waits around a corner and as you approach a light flickers behind him that cast his shadow just in-front of you, jump scare style).

I guess to each his own, just bothers me when people are like "its not that bad, you only have to disable shadows..." come on, in my book that is pretty bad. In the end it is a big bummer though, dead space is really the IDEAL game to be played in 3D. No HUD, all the holograms in the world, the fog, and horror atmosphere, it could of easily been the best use of 3D so far.

I did not turn off shadows. Only in scene did I have a weird double image around my guy as I left the room, most the time they look fine. But like I said I haven't got very far into the game so maybe there are other lighting issues I have not seen yet.

Shadows do give more depth to the game..and so far I played with shadows on high...

There are some isues with the shadows ,but not so much...so I don't turn it off.
I have turned off,... depth of field, and some other settings, that I think would not work with 3d,..but I haven't tested it yet.

It really remains to be seen how much nVidia can fix with a profile. I've noticed in the past on other games that oddly placed elements were relocated to screen depth properly by new profiles ... as if some detection of specific elements in the rendering process can be hacked up or worked around. I think some of those elements do exist in Dead Space, if not all.

On the other hand, we never really saw any of those things fixed in the original Dead Space ...

I continue to believe that getting ahead of the release of these games is important. I can't believe EA did zero work on this for such a blockbuster game...

But it's precisely the Blockbusters that don't get the work.
Every game release comes down to the wire to ship, every game ships with missing features and bugs, it's all about severity and priority.
Unfortunately given the adoption of 3D on PC today it's always going to fall off the bottom of priority lists, especially if your rendering pipeline doesn't lend itself to the auto 3D that NVidia offers. Honestly in this case I'd be surprised if stereo 3D even made in on the priority list.

I have still not played DS2, but if it is supported like DS1 (I wrote because somebody was comparing then) it doens´t worth to play in stereo, at least for me. It is very easy to take a simple shot with all perfect, only we have to shot when anomalies are not present in the scene. In DS1 shadows was really a problem, and when disabling the whole scene lost a lot of beauty and inmersion. Also was big problems with lights, and of course in a isolated scene without the problems it is possible to take a "3d ready like" shot. I do not say it is the case (it is a hope), but it is possible and usually happend.

As I said, people usually rate games 3d compatibility very high, and the lie dissapoint to any who want a perfect (or near to perfect) stereo sperience (forgeting if the game is funy or not when playing in stereo). As I said, if I must disable shadows and lights are not render properly, it is imposible to rate with a good note... IT IS MY OPINION, OF COURSE. I hate to buy a game rated like "excellent" and see that the final result is disapointing. Another reason to rate with more accurate is to give developers an opinion about what is the minimun... otherwise I prefer not imagine how future games can be. I have enought with ghosting anomalies... please, do not rate 10 if ghosting problems are very visible, or if shadows, lights, fog, water, or any other different effects are nor render properly, or if framerates decrease a lot, or if you see any important thing. I also can play with a tack fixed in the eye, and I can finish the game, and also it may be fun, but if I rate the game with "8" I will have another tack in the other eye in the next game.

Edit: I have just installed and tested DS2, and as I imagine it is really WORSE. Do not play in these conditions, it is not playable and no good for health eyes. My rating (after playing 3 minutes) = 2,5
No reason to play more than 3 minutes. Also with all graphics disabled the image is corrupted and also with shadows disabled still there are shadows rendered incorretly, and halo around objetcs, lighs doubled.... etc, etc.... INCREDIBLE how bad it is.

Very strange you are getting a halo around objects and lights doubled I don't see this. Too bad for you. Enjoy the game though.

My first impressions with DS2 are also disapoiting, very bad. I don't know if it's just my impression, but Dead Space 1 looked better in 3D, not sure though as it's been quite some time since I played it in 3D.
Please, how do I disable shadows? I'm also seeing shadows rendering in 2D, just like Left 4 Dead 2. In the menu settings for dead space 2 the option "custom render settings" is greyed out, not selectable. Does this happens to you guys also or is this option selectable for you? I think that option is where you turn of effects and shadows. Please, someone help out, why I can't select that option, all other options are Ok.

Anyway, could be worse, like the last Medal of Honor, totally unplayable in 3D.

Edit: How stupid I was, I had to select custom for graphics instead of very high. my bad.....

In Mass Effect 2 this was caused by Fog. For example if there was a lamp on a desk, they would put a fog volume at the center point of the lamp where the light originates. If you were to stand in front of it and align your characters head with the lamp, you'd see a halo on the left & right of your head.

If there is a way to disable fog, try it. Look in the config files maybe?

Even with the 3D bugs, I must honestly say that this game is played different in 3D, it's way better than 2D, very immersive and scary as hell with depth and convergence. No way I'll play this game in 2D despite of all bugs encountered in 3D. But you must disable shadows, you don't really lose much, as the lights, smoke and fog bring the horror to the game. Shadows will distract you a lot as they're rendered in 2D. This game must be played in 3D, it's another atmosphere, definatelly worth it.

Mass Effect 2 which I think is built using the same Unreal engine suffered the same fog effect issues but you could disable it with the FloatingPointRenderTargets=false switch. Doing this does affected visual quality, making environment textures look a little grainy. Fortunately, ME3 easily still looks cool enough to enjoy in 3D.

If you could find a similar switch in DS1 I would be greatful. I too had to give up on it because I can no longer gaming in 3D.

It's INCREDIBLE how bad you think it is...
There are no health problems ,and we decide if we like to play it or not
3 minutes and you already made up your mind...?

1..most levels haven't got much troubles I think the first one (like in DeadSpace1) is the worst...
2..you haven't take much time to setup convergence and depth..,and played with the settings...,took me a whole day to see there are some settings, that are almost perfect, but you have to take the time to mess around with them.
3.. Bad for eyes..come one...! you probably tried only 100% depth and gave up...

If you really dislike what you see, then try the ("splintercell conviction settings") Depth 6-10 % convergence high till you aren't seeing double images...
That give's you nice effect and everything looks pretty good !

Examles pictures below ! (sorry about the darkness..I cannot rename the file and make it brighter with Photoshop)

BTW If you want higher depth ,then turn lights to normal.
