I've caved in and decided to purchase the Acer H5360 but I need some advice as a lot of forum posts have left me a bit confused, so forgive me if I've missed anything obvious! I should be getting the PJ delivered early next week with any luck, and I already own the Asus VG278H with 2 sets of 3D Vision 2 glasses.
Can the projector run at 720p 120Hz in 2D? I believe only the HDMI 1.3 projectors with Frame Sequential could do this, but I'm still not sure.
Can I definitely run it in 3D using HDMI, or is it through the VGA?
Can I use DLP Link 3D glasses to view 3D Vision content and Blu Rays, or am I limited only to using 3D Vision glasses? I'm a bit confused by the 2 standards and what they are limited to. Any Blu Rays will be played back by Power DVD on my PC through the HDMI.
As I don't have a separate USB emitter and only have one built into my Asus VG278H, can I clone my displays so I still get the emitter signal (and use the projectors NVidia 3D mode to disable the DLP link signal)? Or will I need to buy an emitter separately?
Does it matter if I have the projector set as the primary or secondary display whilst I still have my Asus monitor connected?
Is it worth getting a high-gain screen? Any indication on minimum and maximum screen sizes to still maintain acceptable brightness and sharpness at 720? I can get my room pretty dark.
I'm still confused how the projector knows how to sync with the 3D vision glasses separately. If anyone has a similar setup I would love to know how you configured it to work together.

Yes, no problem. The image is a bit softer and not as bright as 60Hz, but it does work without any trouble.
Running in HDMI?
Yes. This is how I run it. I've also run it through VGA, but HDMI is more convenient. Highest resolution supported in 3D is 720p, 1080p in 2D. I can't recommend anything other than native resolution though, it's too blurry to use at 2D 1080p.
DLP Link glasses?
I don't think these work with the straight H5360. If you have the H5360BD, they are required, and in fact the 3D Vision glasses won't work. You might be able to get this to work with their built in 3D menu, which is otherwise unused. Since DLP Link uses the white flash to sync up, it's possible this might work.
Need new emitter?
Probably. But it is worth trying to see if you can clone the displays and still get proper sync. If the monitor is the primary display it will still enable the emitter, and the projector will likely stay in sync because of the vSync. Maybe. Still worth a try.
Primary or secondary?
NVidia control panel will only allow 3D Vision when a supported device is present. Since you need the emitter on, it's very likely to require the monitor as primary.
High gain screen?
Depends on personal preference too much to say. I can offer that in my main room, I can still use it during the day with drapes drawn, with no home theater heroics. Off white wall, no high gain. In Eco-mode, it's fine, in non-Eco, it's bright enough at night that the shading from the glasses is welcome. 10' diagonal display for me.

The setup I use is with the external pyramid. This combo works pretty much flawlessly. The driver uses the projector's vsync to signal the glasses to shutter, keeping them in sync. With your alt-monitor approach I'm not sure.

They will.
I still recommend 3d vision 2 glasses however. Most DLP link glasses are trash. The ones that are good are at same price point as 3d vision 2's which makes the point moot since 2's are better.

I've just purchased a 3D vision 2 kit with the glasses and emitter just in case. I would rather not have had to spend the £100, but I would hate to have the projector risk not being able to use it, and at least my girlfriend and her son can also watch stuff with me.
I'll let you know how I get on, and if it is possible to use the built in emitter from the monitor to sync the glasses and projector. I have real doubts about it, but it will be interesting to try out.
I just hope the NVidia drivers don't throw a fit and make the emitters conflict with each other...

Completely.
Unless you can get an edid override to work, no 3d vision glasses/emitter. Some rare games you might have issues getting to work. You can only use dlp link glasses.
I highly recommending if anyone has gotten an edid override to work with it. It sounds likely given that they are same model almost.

When you say "completely" are you referring to the fact that 3D TV Play is worse than 3D Vision (and if so, how much worse)?

Its same as 3d vision for most part.
Due to hertz of 3D tv play. Some games have issues getting to run [very small number]. Best place to go about edid overrides is 3dvisionblog/forum. Maybe someone there already tried it.

If it's possible to cancel or return the projector on account of the confusion between BD/non-BD, that might be the best option.
I did a quick search about using the 5360BD with an override, but I didn't find anyone saying that they in fact tried it and that it works. It might work though. I have the 5360BD myself and if I feed the projector a 3D signal and forget to turn it to DLP-link mode, the image appears as you would expect, with a double image. Whether it's actually displaying at 120hz or not, I don't know.
The 5360 (non-BD) has options for both DLP-link and Nvidia glasses 3D modes. Perhaps the Nvidia glasses mode is just to account for any color shift specific to the glasses, but I fear there might be something more to it. The lumen output of the projector drops significantly in both 3D modes (to around 700 lumens according to Projector Central's review of the H5360). Perhaps the projector has to turn off the white parts of its color wheel in order to properly operate at 120hz.
Worse case scenario, you'll have to buy DLP-link glasses. In that case you'd want to get high quality ones, in the $70-$120 range.

To be honest id rather take the 5360BD, it does side by side right? 3dtv play works great, and you have the option to go tridef too. Always nice to have multiple 3d driver options. Im still using 3d vision projector, but next upgrade will be to 3dtvplay, so i can use tridef too. Fortunately my sony hmz supports that so i can use tridef too.
To be honest id rather take the 5360BD, it does side by side right? 3dtv play works great, and you have the option to go tridef too. Always nice to have multiple 3d driver options. The left and right image each have 960 horizontal lines, and the projector has 1280. Basically, you're getting an image that's inferior to 720p 3D.
That said, it doesn't hurt to have the option.

Yeah i agree that 1080p sbs looks slightly worse than true 720p 3d. But on a 1080p projecor, 1080p sbs looks better than 720p frame sequential imo. I have tried all those combinations and on some cases, if you dont have the possibility to do AA, 1080p sbs can look as good as 720p frame sequential, even slightly better.
edit: i actually preferred top/bottom on 1080p projector, looks slightly better than sbs. Have you tried top bottom format?

I'll let you know how I get on, and if it is possible to use the built in emitter from the monitor to sync the glasses and projector. I have real doubts about it, but it will be interesting to try out.
I just hope the NVidia drivers don't throw a fit and make the emitters conflict with each other...

Does the H5360 need an additional converter box to use 3D? And does the 5360BD need a VESA lead to work with the 3D vision emitter? I'm starting to get even more confused...
I'm reading that the 5360BD only works out of the box with NVidia 3D TV Play...Do I have to get an EDID override so it's detected as 3D Vision capable and is this possible? Is 3D TV Play any different to use than 3D Vision, and any worse feature-wise?

Unless you can get an edid override to work, no 3d vision glasses/emitter. Some rare games you might have issues getting to work. You can only use dlp link glasses.
I highly recommending if anyone has gotten an edid override to work with it. It sounds likely given that they are same model almost.

I know not much is mentioned in here about EDID overrides (probably for good reason) has anyone here used one to get the 5360BD working with 3D Vision and NVidia glasses? If I got one working can I then definitely use my 3D Vision 2 glasses?
And if I can't get an override in place, does 3D TV Play still allow me to set depth and convergence in the normal way?

Due to hertz of 3D tv play. Some games have issues getting to run [very small number]. Best place to go about edid overrides is 3dvisionblog/forum. Maybe someone there already tried it.
Depth/convergence is the same. You might need to use a depth hack if your projectors screen size is smaller then 80"

I did a quick search about using the 5360BD with an override, but I didn't find anyone saying that they in fact tried it and that it works. It might work though. I have the 5360BD myself and if I feed the projector a 3D signal and forget to turn it to DLP-link mode, the image appears as you would expect, with a double image. Whether it's actually displaying at 120hz or not, I don't know.
The 5360 (non-BD) has options for both DLP-link and Nvidia glasses 3D modes. Perhaps the Nvidia glasses mode is just to account for any color shift specific to the glasses, but I fear there might be something more to it. The lumen output of the projector drops significantly in both 3D modes (to around 700 lumens according to Projector Central's review of the H5360). Perhaps the projector has to turn off the white parts of its color wheel in order to properly operate at 120hz.
Worse case scenario, you'll have to buy DLP-link glasses. In that case you'd want to get high quality ones, in the $70-$120 range.
I'm not certain exactly how the resolution would vary. The big difference here is between frame-sequential, and frame-packed 3D for the 5360BD. I believe this would be exactly the same experience for both projectors- 60Hz frames for each eye. (120Hz in H5360, 60Hz doubled in 5360BD)
Assuming that's true, you wouldn't really notice any difference in experience between H5360 and 5360BD. Game-wise, they'd be the same.
Also, you wouldn't need a license for 3D TV Play as long as you leave your monitor with emitter connected, that will allow you to use 3D TV Play software.
Seems like the real difference is in the glasses. You'd need to run DLP Link glasses instead of 3D Vision glasses.

I'm gonna play about with an EDID fix when the projector arrives next Tuesday. It's coming with 1 pair of DLP link glasses included, I hope they are rechargeable and are good enough to get me started in case the EDID solution fails. Apparently they cost about £60 but no idea of the make and model, so I have no idea if they are actually any good.
Can anyone possibly link a decent pair of usb rechargeable DLP glasses that compare well against the 3D Vision 2 glasses? I don't want to spend any more than £100 for a pair. There are so many on ebay, plus I would only trust comments or reviews from NVidia 3D users regarding the quality and how they compare to the NVidia ones.

This is true, but I find it doesn't look so great because it's 720p native. If you have a 1080p sbs signal, the image has 1080 vertical lines but the projector only has 720, so you lose a lot of detail right there. The left and right image each have 960 horizontal lines, and the projector has 1280. Basically, you're getting an image that's inferior to 720p 3D.
That said, it doesn't hurt to have the option.
Yeah i agree that 1080p sbs looks slightly worse than true 720p 3d. But on a 1080p projecor, 1080p sbs looks better than 720p frame sequential imo. I have tried all those combinations and on some cases, if you dont have the possibility to do AA, 1080p sbs can look as good as 720p frame sequential, even slightly better.
edit: i actually preferred top/bottom on 1080p projector, looks slightly better than sbs. Have you tried top bottom format?
I think it makes sense what you say, that 1080p sbs would look better on a 1080p display than 720p frame sequential. 720p can't be upscaled evenly to 1080p. Meanwhile, upscaling exactly half 1080p to full 1080p is perfectly even, and aliasing could easily be reduced in the process.
