Hopefully, this means that 1080p 120Hz / 720p 240Hz DLP projectors etc are now possible.
Whether or not these will actually make it to market or not remains to be seen.
The final hurdle will of course be nVidia. From what I have been hearing, their licencing fees to add 3D Vision support are so high that no one has been interested for quite a while now.
Time will tell...

The news is still very fresh and I haven't seen confirmation of 1080p 3D 60fps capability yet. It should be there though.
Presumably all new video cards will support the new HDMI spec within a year. I'm not worried about that. As far as upgrading older cards, we'll have to hope for a dual DVI to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

Technically it could all be done with 3DPlay since it's HDMI. But being as Nvidia has their new toy with Shield, I'm guessing it'll be ignored until they begin their 3rd 3D initiative (who knows when). I'll say this though, it's hard for me to get excited about Shield when I know Nvidia usually abandons things after a couple years. Unless it's something I really want (like 3D Vision was), it doesn't really pay to pay the Nvidia tax since who knows how long they'll support anything.

Stereo 1080p60 frame packing is already possible with Hdmi1.4 if using the full bandwidth provided by hdmi high speed cables (actually, the bandwidth was already there in hdmi1.3), and it's official.
It's part of the optional formats, AMD has been claiming to support it for almost two years (since the release of Radeon HD7970), Nvidia GPUs also have it in the hardware since Fermi but stopped talking about it (because it's locked in software).

Because NO TV or PROJECTOR will accept the 1080p 3D signal. Sure the card may output 1080p 60hz but the display will not recognize/accept that signal. It's not Nvidia fault. We should have some 1080p HDMI 2 projectors this fall. Sony already announced it's 4k projector will be HDMI 2.0

What I mean is that hdmi2.0 displays won't unlock 1080p60Hz frame packing support.
It's already possible to do it with hdmi 1.4 and yet manufacturers don't want to make TVs and projectors capable of taking these inputs, even when they do have the bandwidth and processing power (Sony's current consumer 4K projector which is firmware upgradable to hdmi2.0), they still stick to the usual 24Hz frame packing input.
If they don't want to do it, they just won't do it. hdmi 2.0 or not.

They will do exactly that (unlock 1080p frame packing) The problem was that when they finalized HDMI 1.4 spec 1080 60hz was not mandatory. Also the early 1.4 chips DID NOT have enough bandwith to to it anyway. It was a latter revision which could technically handle 1080p 60hz. So there was a range of chips with different bandwiths. Now HDMI 2.0 is guaranteed to support it and it's mandatory for the HDMI 2.0 standard. Hopefully Nvidia doesn't block the signal from 1.4 cards to 2.0 devices.
Also the Sony is NOT firmware upgradable, you have to buy a whole new interface board from Sony. I've been reading through all this crap on AVSforum. What I really want is a 3000 lumen 1080p HDMI 2.0 DLP.

I'm sorry to be so pessimistic, but I still haven't found any confirmation that hdmi2.0 will unlock 1080p60 frame packing. I am not a registered hdmi member so I do not have access to the hdmi spec, all I know about it is based on what the media relates, and all they speak about is 4K 2D, I haven't found a single article about Stereo3D through hdmi2.0.
Even though the chips obviously have the bandwidth, at this point I still haven't found any hint that manufacturers are going to support 1080p60 frame packing on hdmi2.0 displays.

Nooo, I was holding off on upgrading, but just bought the Panasonic AE8000, which only does 60Hz 3D at 720p. Oh well, will have to upgrade if and when 1080p 3D @ 60Hz projection lands...

I wouldn't worry about it. 1080p60fps frame packing is well below the bandwidth limits of HDMI 2.0. The news is still fresh, and the fine details haven't been released yet as far as I've seen. 4K is the marketing flavor of the year (just as 3D once was), so naturally that gets hyped up first.
If for some reason 1080p60fps frame packing isn't supported, we can mutiny! So I'm not worried.

With high end projectors using DVI-D Dual link, you'd think HDMI would add it to their specs to get in on the action. With their claimed bandwidth, it would be doable.
But if you look at their FAQ, there is no mention of it.

Haha,
Well, as a dual-projector user gaming at full 1080p60Hz per eye on a daily basis, I am proud to have chosen a different ship then ;)
Although the price is high and the cabin isn't as luxurious as on the Nvidia 3D Vision ship, at least the AMD/Tridef captain is actually bringing me to the destination I paid for.

Bah! Where's your sense of adventure!! :)
I'm with Jack Sparrow ... err umm ... Libertine, though! :D
As a 1080p60hz (Checkerboard DLP TV) user, I'm really interested in 4k 3D @ 60hz ... I know actual 1080p60hz is better than Checkerboard ... but what's the sense of jumping up to 4k if I'm only going to go back to 1080p. They kinda blew it with the 3D specs on the last gen of HDMI ... think they'd learn their lesson ...
Edit:I want this at home ... [drool]http://www.dlp.com/cinema/dlp-enhanced-4k/[/drool] :D
