Big fan of 3D gaming here :) I've used a Plasma 3D TV (47") for some years with TriDef and some games are really amazing (recently played Grow Home, great game and fantastic in 3D). I had the former version of Occulus Rift and it was pretty good, it's too bad so few games has proper support, with that price its expected i guess..
I do get a headache if i play in 3D for too long on the Plasma though, try to keep it to max 40 mins..
So, I just found a cheap 720p 3D projector (Benq w700) + glasses (3D vision 1 + 2) so i bought it, should get here next week. Exciting :)
Some questions:
1. Can i expect a big difference between 3D vision and TriDef? 120Hz should make a difference i guess. Perhaps less of the Ghosting too? Anyone compared?
2. With Tridef you can set depth and how the image is presented in 3D (you can push aspects of the 3D back/forth so that e.g the character is just infront of your eyes - which can be annoying). I find this is really handy because you can tweak the setting a lot.. 100% screen depth looks amazing and often works really well, the depth is immense on my Plasma. The butterfiles in Grow Home looks like they're directly infront of my eyes and 1m from the actual screen, and the character looks like its floating within my grasp, looks really great. Ghosting can be an issue, but can be tweaked to get less annoying. Can you set screen depth with 3D vision too?
3. Does the Nivida 3D vision (software) cost anything? If i remember correctly it does (..or did?)
4. I found out about the page Helixmods. It seems to be some kind of hacks so that games works with 3D vision. Will the 3D in those games look similar to TriDef (better/worse?)
5. Generally, what has the better 3D, DLP projector or Plasma? Again, has anyone compared? I guess im a little worried that the 3D wont be as amazing as i have now.

1. 3D Vision is much better than Tridef. You'll find game support to be the biggest improvement.
2. Yes, you can set depth and convergence. Be sure to enable advanced settings in the nVidia control panel
3. For 3D Vision (using official 3D Vision certified displays), it's free. The W700 appears to be one of those, so you're fine.
4. Usually it looks better. You will need to use Helixmod for the majority of games you play in 3D.
5. DLP. Less ghosting, bigger screen, more immersive.
helixmod = stereoscopic compatibility patches made by members of the 3D Vision community. Most fixes are simply drop in and play, but please thoroughly read the instructions for each individual game.

If you are getting headaches, it's probably because you are using separation that is greater than your IPD or there are effects causing eye rivalry from rendering in one eye only.

The problem with the 3D Vision compatible list, is manufactures have to pay money to get on that list. That's why it's limited. Especially since manufacturers have moved on from the 3D craze. Why would a TV/monitor manufacturer want to pay money to Nvidia (so Nvidia can use that support to sell GPUs)? The whole concept was stupid. 3D Vision locked consumers into the Nvidia ecosystem and sold GPUs. The fact they insisted on double dipping with revenue streams probably cost them money in the end.

Others, like me, have bypassed obsolete 3DTV Play, and are using an EDID mod to enable 3D Vision games to display interleaved 4K 3D on passive LG HDMI 2.0 3D TVs. NVIDIA seems to at least provide driver-level support for HDMI 2.0 (but not through 3DTV Play)...
By the way, this EDID mod works great with Ignition, as well. When properly adjusted (and with identical shader fixes), 3D Vision and Ignition provide comparable true 3D gaming. However, Ignition support for new games/technology stopped long ago, while the uniquely talented 3D Vision community (not NVIDIA) has kept 3D gaming very much alive!

Unfortunately, Nvidia has never updated the software to take advantage of the higher bandwidth that was now available. 1080p @ 60fps is no longer a technical issue, but the software is still locked into very old limits that were imposed many years ago.
Arent most people connecting their PC monitor with HDMI? It shouldnt be too different from using a TV.

EDIT: Just to avoid any confusion, all those HDTV LCDs that were claiming 120/240/480/960hz were inputting the signal at 60hz and then just doing interpolation with on-board processing. They didn't have the bandwidth to actually accept a 1080p signal at 120hz.
Yes i know about that hz-thing for TV's i think my plasma has 900hz, it doesnt say anything and it was pretty eaasy to understand since that kind of jump is far too big to take seriously.

By the way, this EDID mod works great with Ignition, as well. When properly adjusted (and with identical shader fixes), 3D Vision and Ignition provide comparable true 3D gaming. However, Ignition support for new games/technology stopped long ago, while the uniquely talented 3D Vision community (not NVIDIA) has kept 3D gaming very much alive!
To cut to the chase though- your just purchased W700 equipment is among the very best, if not the best setup you can buy today. Your plasma is not nearly as good. DLP Projectors have zero ghosting because their switch times are super fast, so for anyone concerned about ghosting, this is the best setup.
With HelixMods, I am sure you are going to be blown away at how good it looks and plays. You'll be able to get the same out of screen effects you've enjoyed before, but this time they'll be life size and in your room.

It's very good to hear i did a good choice with the W700 :) Hopefully it arrives today. Would be really interesting to try out 3D vision on the monitor too though, if possible. It's "just" 34" and it certainly will have far more ghosting than the w700.
