You'll need 3rd party hardware such as a SiliconDust HDHomeRun.
For OTA (over the air) and Clear QAM signals the basic model will suffice.
For encrypted channels you'd need an advanced model (SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME) that is capsble of using a cable card that you'd optain from your content provider.

Well actually I think I already know the answer to this but my new Alienware 17's 780m does have HDMI input, and I can feed in HDMI but it then switches over entirely and I have no access to the windows side of things. My question is this, is there anyway to access the HDMI input as a capture device within windows? And if not, seeing as my screen is a 120hz 3d vision certified panel, can I feed it 3d content either in SBS or frame packaged format through the HDMI input?

I think thats a question best asked "Alienware" don't you think? (I did notice the HDMI input was only v1.3 so no S3D in (v.14a minimum for S3D over HDMI). Still not sure what a HDMI input is doing on a "gaming" laptop?)

I just saw this thread and when I saw Josh say "we dont have inputs on any of our cards" I had to chime in to see if this is a feature of the nvidia mobile chipset or, more likely, some bios feature of the laptop (fn+f9 toggles HDMI input). I'll eventually get around to calling them but it's basically just dell support and not sure they'd even know the correct answer anyway. The HDMI port is the same one used for nvidia output (I use it through my receiver to my h5360 over hdmi, 720p@120hz 3D vision).
As for why put an HDMI input on a gaming laptop, you're right I'd never connect my 360 or whatever into it rather than play on the PC, and I could've cared less if it hadn't come with this feature but I've found it useful in my job (AV/Automation) to setup and configure equipment that hasn't been integrated yet into a system yet. Now I can get video output from the device (including audio from the hdmi) right on my laptop which is usually on top of the equipment rack anyway while troubleshooting. I now use this feature everyday and it definitely makes life easier.
Anyway, 3D vision certified lightboost LCD built in, HDMI input being fed into it, there's gotta be some way to get 3d input working (any 3d format, SBS/OU, interleaved or frame packed). This is the new model 17 not MX series and I can't find a lot of details online so I'm not sure if its 1.3 or 1.4 HDMI but either way it would probably need to communicate with the built in 3d emitter in any case.
Sorry to sort of jack the thread here, but another longtime wonder of mine has been if there is anyway to use a capture device as an input source for 3d vision player (stereoscopic viewer). Similar to the way that vlc lets you open a live capture as a feed, but have the ability to set the content input options (hsbs, aspect ratio) to transform the signal for 3d vision (interleaved, I believe) in order to do as the OP asks - display the signal from a cablebox (usually hsbs here in Canada) on the computer. Granted that this would be using some kind of third party capture device as an input (not related to the above about my HDMI input stuff).
So anyone know if this is actually or feasibly possible?
