Geforce 280m and notebook adapters being left behind.

Guys!! I think you might be forgeting one "little" detail: Mobile GTX280 or GTX280M is very far from being the same as a GTX280 for desktop. The mobile versions are simply put the good old 8800gts mobile, and thus has not the hardware architecture of the desktop's GTX2xx series.

Other than that, as far as the notebook has a dual link DVI output there aren't more limitations for 3D stereo beyond the little graphic power these graphics adapters provide.

As a sidenote if you do not know whether you dvi connector is dual link, you can check if it allows for 2560x1600 resolution output, but anyway, probably all the high end machines you are talking about have no problem with that.

Just remember, a GTX280M is not a GTX2xx graphics card...

After some Google-time I possibly have the answer.

First I have to say, I know from an other Dell XPS M1730 user that 3D Vision with the Nvidia-Shutter-glasses works.
But the M1730 has a DVI Dual Link Port that is nessesary for the Samsung 120Hz Display.

The Alienware M17x only has a 19-pin HDMI (called Type A).
But only Type B with 29 pins supports Dual-Link. But this Connector seems to be used nowhere.
I found this at wikipedia.

So it seems that you never get 3D-Vision working on the Alienware, sorry.
The strange Display-Port near the HDMI is not compatible to DVI/HDMI standards unfortunatelly.
