Need extreme help yes i am the moron who keeps asking technical questions

i hope you manage to get this fixed, as a few folks here are very curious as to what the trouble is.
i very much doubt its psu related as you stated the card will only take what is needed and nothing more,
but now its been mentioned i recall a smiliar issue when i changed my old 8800 ultrs from water bk to air and the sink on one of them wasnt sat correctly.
could poss the psu isnt giving enough perhaps? maybe try the card in another machine to rule that out,
until you can run the card in another pc, it defo looks like the card is borked, imho.
best of luck and fingers crossed nothing will need replacing. /thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I replaced the DVI to HDMI cable last night and all the artifacts went away on bootup so I was prematurely happy. I decided to try to back up the HD and went to play my Xbox. Sure enough, about 1 1/2 hr in, I noticed my computer had restarted. When I switched back over to the PC, the screen was fine, but windows had a message that said it had recovered from a forced shutdown. It said it was the type "Blue Screen". I will have to find the event log to get more info. I ran a full diag on the computer and everything passed with flying colors. Both blue screen issues happend when I was backing up the HD (Raid 0). I wonder if I have 2 issues going on at the same time. I appreciate everyone helping me out. Lets hope I can solve this before the wife kills me.

If the PSU (650 watt Corsair) doesn't supply enough power to the card, won't a message come up stating that (i saw that in a few other posts)

I hate it when something goes wrong with my pc. I really feel for you.

Try playing a power intensive game like crysis. I think I had similar issues a long time ago. On Crysis boot up I would here a sort of squealing noise which I thought was interference from my sound card. I later upgraded and it seemed to work well with most, if not all games until I tried crysis and that would cause my machine to blue screen restart. Bought a bigger PSU and that fixed the problem.

Andy

edit - did you say you put in your old PSU incase your new PSU is faulty?

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I am hoping a 650 watt PSU is big enough for the new 470. I have a 9800GT. The old supply was only 440 watts. Switching back to the old power supply is definitely on the agenda.

I check the Action Center error report and it say "my Nvidia Driver has stopped working"
Odd of being a driver issue are??? I have the newest 3D vision one.

I am like running crazy right now working on my house. But later this evening when I get time I will cruise back through here and see where you stand. I have a few tests that I will want you to run to see if we can isolate your issue down to hardware or driver.

Sorry I dont have the time to run through it with you at this time.

EG

And just to let you know the windows error report only shows what failed, not why it failed. Bad hardware can cause the drivers to fail as well as many system instabilities.

I really appreciate that. I will keep my eye on this post. Another update, the new DVI cABLE may have been the problem. I also went back to 3D vision driver CD1.13. I am reading in the driver forums that people are still having major fan/overheating probs with the latest driver. I am running my computer (with the side open) just to see if it bsod's. So far it has been an hour and it is ok. I playe WOW in 3d vision for 30 min and am now running video.
God, I hope it was something simple as a cable (although it did bsod last night)

If it is a driver issue, why don't they make seperate drivers per series, 9800/8800/200 and so on. Most of the people having issues have 8800/9800's. If their driver fried my card, who is responsible. How long do I have to wait to get a replacement. I normally have alot of confidence in Nvidia, I just don't want to be another casualty.

Whelp...I was wrong. After 1.5 hours almost exactly, computer screen gets funky and the computer reboots itsell. I get the bsod on reboot and due to the returning artifacts, i can't even read the screen. artifacts on reboot and the resolution is off. I tried plugging into what i though was an onboard video card but they must have removed that at HP (d5000z) since I bought it with the 9800gt installed. I really have no recourse since my diagnostics (the HP Pc Doctor) says everything is 100%. The only thing I did was change a power supply to prepare for the upgrade. I have done it twice before (other computers) with no probs. I guess I am just "lucky". I am going to put the old supply back in to see if it is in fact a faulty power supply and after that, I am going to pay someone to fix my mess.

I REALLY HOPE THIS IS NOT DRIVER RELATED!!!

I, of course, will post my results later.

You all might see a grown man cry.

Switched back to the original working power supply and the problem persists. Rules out PSU. I am going to go with a fried 9800GT.
I will have HP come out and look at it. I bought their 2 year on site warranty. When I get my new GTX470, I am definitely paying someone to put it all in and optimize.

My wife is going to kill me.

oh and THANK YOU EVERYONE who chipped in to help. Have a virtual beer on me.

OK where do you stand at this time?

Have you gotten any joy or are you still having issues?

if you can lay out for me when and how this started that could help greatly. Prior to this issue was everything working fine? Or did you have issues from time to time?

What have you attempted so far and in what order?

No issues prior. No viruses, reboots, blue screens, or graphical errors. It is definitely the GPU, it happens after about an 1.5 hours. It is probably overheating and shutting down, then all the artifactscome back. I am sure if I turn it on now it will work fine for an hour.
I want to say the card just went bad but I don't overclock anything and the card isn't overclocked either. I am curious about the new drivers.
I think I am beyond hope.
If you want to get a detail of what I did, I pretty much laid it out on this thread.

Thanks for showing up to help!!
