Temporary "Ghosting"?
  1 / 2
Hi

Completely new to this so not really sure what I'm doing. My problem is that last night, I was playing Bad Company 2 in 3D and it looked great. However today I tried it again, and the two images that make up the 3D effect seem to slowly diverge over about 10 seconds, and then converge again (to a nice sharp 3D image), and then start diverging again. It does this repeatedly.

I think this is called ghosting(?), and I'm guessing that it's something to do with the glasses not being in syn with my monitor, maybe the timing is out or something. Does that sound plausible?

Can anyone tell me what I should do to eliminate this problem? I tried Just Cause 2 for the first time in 3D today too, and it has exactly the same problem, so I dont think its a problem with one particular game, more a problem with my hardware of drivers (I'm guessing).

I've got a GTX 570, BenQ monitor and the nvidia glasses/transmitter bundle.

Appreciate any help, thanks!

Richard

Its not ghosting, you get ghosting when you are getting the wrong image in the wrong eye, or extra images in both eyes from the wrong eyes. What you are getting is different, not sure what it is sorry, maybe reinstall drivers?

Thanks Eightball, I'll try a driver reinstall when I get home. Does this effect I'm seeing have a name? It would be useful to know so I know what to search for. Thanks.

It's not something i've seen myself. When you reinstall the drivers, there is an option for a clean install, i'd try that first. Failing that, maybe other people have had the same issue. Also, is your CPU/Mobo intel or AMD? If its AMD theres a fix on these forums about disabling the USB Host Controller that the emitter is plugged into, and it fixes some ghosting and sync issues with AMD boards.

Hi. No, it's an Intel Core i5 / Gigabyte (Intel) motherboard. Wierd that it's started happening when it's been working fine in the past. Thanks for the tip re clean reinstall, I'll give it a go. Hope it works because it looked amazing when it's behaving itself.

Try the 270.61 drivers, several people running surround have had this issue with the 275.xx drivers, usually on only one monitor.

You can also try rerunning the 3D setup wizard, that sometimes fixes it.

Spent some time with some very patient nvidia suport engineers. Still not solved, but some clues

Maybe the dual dvi cable is faulty
My res in nvidia cc waset to 60hz, so changed it to 120hz.
Bad company 2 for some reason want to use 119hz which cant be good. Why doesnt it let me choose 120?

If I take the glasses off, the image on the monitor is fairly solid, although there are clearly two images. Wearing the glasses though, because the 'refresh rate' doesnt seem to be in sync, I will sometimes see the 'left' image and sometimes the 'right'. Sometimes it looks perfect. The problem is as it blurs in and out of each mode, i'm getting shot in the face because I cant see what.s going on lol.

Any ideas please share thanks

Still struggling with this. If anyone can offer suggestions I would really appreciate it. To recap, when playing games, the image will be nice and sharp, but slowly the left and right images will diverge (so its completely blurred). Then they will start to come back together again (takes about 10 seconds) until the picture is sharp again. Then the cycle repeats.

The other problem that I sometimes get is a bit different; It'll be in 3D but perhaps every half a second the display will flick between the left and right images and then back again. To try and describe it, imagine looking at a normal screen (no 3D) through your left eye. Now through your right eye. Then back to the left eye... right... left... right... left... you get the idea. The perspective is constantly shifting between left and right, which makes the games unplayable.

I have tried the following...

Moving the IR pyramid so it's directly in front of me
Plugging the pyramid into another USB port.
Trying a different DualLink DVI cable in case the cable that came with my monitor is faulty
370.61, 375.33 and the latest beata drivers (all with a clean install)
Tried every setting and resolution I can think of in the games
Checked I am running at 120Hz in Nvidia control panel
In Nvidia control panel I have set the 'single GPU mode' on and set the power settings to 'Performance'

Interestingly, after installing the new beta drivers, I have for the first time ever seen the test patterns hold steady i.e. triangles in one eye and hexagons in the other. This is a small victory at least, in the past they have ALWAYS just cycled endlessly.

I don't know what else to do! I have a support case open so hopefully I will get some help but it's nearly the weekend and it looks like it'll be in boring 2D... :)

Thanks

The newest driver actually got released properly, you don't need to use the beta one anymore, you can just download the newest driver from the official page. Unfortunately, it sounds like it probably won't do any good =/ I don;t think there are a particularly large amount of changes to the new one compared to the beta or anything.

Couple of suggestions - Could there be another IR device nearby causing interference? During the setup, I think there are options for the IR strength, it mentions like 1 emitter, 1 emitter + ir devices, and multiple emitters. Try picking different settings there - it could help? Or unplugging any nearby IR devices, see if it helps. I say this, because the train of thought I am using, is that if it was fine one night, then no good the next, maybe there was something else different other than your computer? The pyramid can be pretty sensitive sometimes.

Or are there any settings on your monitor? Things like that could potentially change what windows picks your refresh rate up at.

It does sound like it could be driver related tho, in that you are seeing different things with different drivers. You could always try doing a windows restore to the point before you had the issue if you have a restore point from before then - or just reinstalling Windows (you can do this without a format, tho some applications might still need reinstalled regardless to get registry stuff back in, however any files will still be there, tho you probably know this).

Wish I could be more help, these may, or may not work or help at all, it could be none of the above. In desperate situations its the kind of things i'd try anyway, some things to think about. =)

Cheers, like I said I am desperate now so all suggestions are very welcome! I'll try all those suggestions out when I get home. I think the IR and maybe the USB drivers are worth investigating. The lighting in my room perhaps. And also any settings on my monitor which to be honest I have not played around with.

I think the beta drivers I used were version 280.xx actually, so quite a big leap from 275.33 or whatever I was using.

I think I have an evening of tinkering ahead of me... :)

Thanks

Solved!

Ok, I think the main thing I did tonight that fixed it was unplug the IR receiver BEFORE I started the setup wizard. Then I ran the setup wizard, plugged the IR thing in when it told me, and after that everything worked nicely. In fact I have just been playing Bad Company 2 and Just Cause 2 for the last 2 hours and they are mindblowing in 3D. Surely it's the future??!!!??!

Some other things that may have had an effect:

Running in 1680x1280 resolution, read somewhere that matters (3D Vision tips and tricks manual I think)
Put the IR receiver directly in front of me and raised a bit (on a shampoo bottle) so my keyboard couldnt interfere with the signal

That's about it really. I think having the IR receiver unplugged is what sorted it out. Also I reckon if I send my PC to sleep (Windows 7 64bit) I will need to run the setup wizard again. I don't think it copes with being woken up very well.

Worth the hastle though, Just Cause 2... so nice to look at!

Still getting this problem. I thought I had fixed it but it's still a nightmare to get working. Maybe for every 10 times I run the setup wizard it will work just once).... /wallbash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wallbash:' />

Would I be better off with the wired glasses? What do people think? I'm thinking the problem is due to a timing issue between the IR emitter and the glasses. Surely the timing problem would be solved if they are getting their data down a wire?

It's my Belkin Wifi USB network adapter! It's interfering with the IR emitter or the glasses or something.

Done loads of checks. With it unplugged, everything is perfect.
With it plugged in, all my problems come back...

Currently speaking to Nvidia about whether there are known issues...
