Samsung PN51D8000 3d support
  1 / 2
Reviewed by many as one of the best 3d Plasmas of 2011 I went ahead and just bought the Samsung PN51D8000 TV without checking to see if it worked with nvidia 3d. I figured it would have some sort of 3d TV play or 3d vision support. Does anyone have this TV and is there any hope of it working with Nvidia 3d vision/tv play now or in the future? Maybe 3d support with some kind of mod (not nvidia)? I have a nice BenQ 3d monitor so I'm not too heartbroken but I was really hoping to get some 3d on a big screen as well, but I must admit I am disappointed if this "amazing plasma 3d tv" doesn't work with my PC.

Any feedback on this model is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It should work, don't worry. If there's no 3DTV Play support for your TV yet, you can send yours TV EDID to Nvidia and they will add support to it, plain simple.

Please send Nvidia the EDID following these steps: http://nvidia.custhe...hp?p_faqid=2774

I'm not sure if your TV supports Checkerboard and Frame Sequential mode like my Samsung 2010 C7000 Plasma 3DTV, but if it does, you can always use Rollermod to play 3D Vision games in checkerboard mode. Using the newest drivers, Nvidia no longer gives you the ability to use Frame Sequential mode (Generic CRT Mode), but if you go back to drivers 285.62, than using Rollermod, you can also play 3D Vision games in Frame Sequential mode, as long your TV supports this mode.
Samsung TVs are the best 3DTVs cause they support many 3D modes, but in 2011 most of these extra 3D features were taking away by Samsung, so I'm not sure if your TV supports these modes.

Still another person who buys the TV first, then asks the forum if the TV is the correct one.
No samsung plasma since 2010 work with 3D Vision. This means you're stuck with crippled low res scaled 3DTV Play and it's resulting bad image quality. Had you asked before you purchased, we would have warned you that the "reviews" you refer to never consider the possibility that someone would use a TV for a computer display, so they never address suitability for 3D gaming.
If you are within your return window, consider swapping your plasma for a xxD7000/8000 samsung LED model. These are the only D series that support native resolution 1920x1080 with checkerboard mode. 1280x720 images on a 1920x1080 display is downright ugly.

3D vision wasn't the primary reason I bought the TV as I have a 3d vision 2 monitor that does it quite well. I was more interested in the 2D qualities of the TV to be honest. Just seems odd that a 2010 model would be superior for 3d purposes. Is there any chance a system update for the 2011 models will support checkerboard?

Anyway, as long as there is a way to get it working with 3dtv play is all I care about which looks to be the case. If it really bothers me, I'll reconsider for the LEDs, but I'm very pleased with the TV overall so far. I still feel like 3d TVs have a way to go as there is no true 120hz solution that the monitors offer (right?). When that time comes, I'll probably flip my Plasma and pick one of those up.

I actually just read about how much better the checkerboard is.... uuggghhhh I had no idea. My biggest gripe with 3d has always been ghosting so I figured plasma would be superior in that respect. I dunno, I might look into swapping it. I saw a deal on a D8000 LED and I turned it down in favor of the plasma too. I read the wrong reviews. Damn you CNET.

EDIT: I'm just going to keep it. 3d movies should look equally good right? If that's the case I'll keep it. Thanks for the tips, though.

I don't know how the "less ghosting on plasma" myth got started but it isn't true.

Since HDMI1.5 didn't happen in 2012, we are stuck with 1.4 for AT LEAST another year, probably much longer. So forget about 3D gaming on a 3DTV for a long time.

Sure, 3D movies will not be affected by samsungs decision to start charging for CB mode. Apparently you have no desire to 3D game on the plasma, so it should work for you.

I think I heard somewhere that the superior refresh rate of the plasma reduced ghosting to nill. And the non-gaming reviews I've read seemed to say that 3d was superior on the plasma compared to the lcds.

In 2010 THX would only Certify Plasmas for 3D. In 2011 they Certified a few LCD's. We have not seen what they are certifying for 2012 but I imagine more plasmas than LCD's again.

Ahh....the old "some guy said" testimony.
I've been using plasma for well over a year for 3D gaming. The amount of ghosting is 99% dependent on the game, 1% on the technology. So reviews of Blu Ray 3D, broadcast 3D, 3D videos, etc. are absolutely worthless in evaluating 3D gaming ghosting. I've also compared ghosting on Blu Ray 3D plasma vs LED. Both have noticeable ghosting. When the compare is done properly, i.e. same scene in same video with same settings...everything the same except the display, there isn't much if any difference in amount of ghosting. Even if there was, it would mean nothing in 3D gaming. The suggestion that "plasma reduced ghosting to nill" is laughable, play Portal2 in 3D on a plasma and see if the ghosting is "nil". I just hope that nobody buys into this "no ghosting on plasma" BS. Plasma has a TON of ghosting in some games 3D games, almost none in others. It is far from "ghost free".

Well, I got 3dtv play working... ****ty image aside, the ghosting on the plasma was not too bad but noticeably worse than on my BenQ xl24t 3d vision 2 monitor which is lcd. I'm sure some of it can be reduced by tweaks but all in all... meh. The movies I tested on the other hand were quite gorgeous, I did not notice much ghosting if at all.

If I didn't have the BenQ, I would most definitely return it for the led 8000. As it stands, I've got a solid 3d gaming monitor, and a nice 2d gaming and 3d movie watching big screen. Everything is covered so I'm not gonna throw a huge fuss. It is a really nice hdtv regardless. It'll hold me off a few years until hdmi 1.5 or whatever finally comes around. Who knows 3d might be a dying tech by then anyway.
