This looks really cool!! Especially with the Vive coming in November;)) I wonder if the games made for Vive will also get Linux (SteamOs) support. That would be awesome and finally we will have 3D in Linux.
I really love the fact that Valve is pushing Linux Os an entertainment OS for some time now;))
Really looking forward to see what happens next;))

Isn't anyone concerned that gabe newell is doing the same thing bill gates did? (building a monopoly)
Everyone keeps praising gabe newell and valve thus making them stronger.
I wonder if history will repeat itself and when they control 100% of the market (and they are near that point), people will start hating them just like it happend with bill gates and microsoft?
Well, gabe newell's media manipulation is better than bill gates'.
Maybe people will be happy living under gabell newell's tyranny .
Personally, I miss the days when games where disc based: you kept what you paid for (not this "rent at retail price" we have now), you could buy the games in local currencies because you bought the games in a local store (steam claims to support many countries in the world but only charge you in 5 currencies, and it's a big deal for 3rd world country residents like me), you only needed to install the game (not this steam bloatware that's good for nothing) and some other reasons.
Nothing good comes from monopolies and valve is no exception.

Idk, I think Valve did a lot of good and are continuing to do a lot of good. Sure they aren't perfect ... but this whole Gabe Newell is the devil thing? He didn't create the mess that piracy did ... DRM here, DRM there, everyone pulling in different directions, He didn't create the mess DLC did ... oh you want to play that character? buy this, oh you want to drive that car? buy that.
Steam you buy a game ... you own it ... forever, you build/buy a new PC you can still play the game. Nintendo, I bought a game for the eShop ... oh you want to play it on your DS? Buy it again. On your Wii, buy it again. On your Wii U, buy it again. On your 3ds, buy it again ... Sony/Microsoft? What you want to play it on your ... BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Ok, fine ... HD Remake/Collection, pay up!
My only issue with Steam is double-DRM, like on ubisoft games ... other than that, DRM really isn't going anywhere, I'd rather just deal with one. Trying to create a 'unified' PC market, really isn't a bad thing.
I know people say competition is good but is it really? If you took everything good from iZ3D, TriDef and 3D Vision and put it together and we had one unified 3D base working towards the same goals and one unified 3D community would we be better off or worse off?

Lol ok :-)
I don't see how Valve could ever become a monopoly, and they are not anywhere near close to being one yet. Gamers don't celebrate monopolies or support them, which is probably why there are still Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo still operating and PC still has no single entity or company that really defines what PC gaming is...except...PC gaming currently relies mostly on Direct X, which happens to rely on Windows for the vast majority of gamers who aren't willing to take on Linux or limit their gaming to a few minority titles and indie games.
Windows and other PC game retailers/storefronts aren't going to vanish just because Valve are trying something to even out some of the competition. There is no way Valve/Steam will kill off all competition and somehow become the only place people can buy and play PC games. Steam itself is great (IMO) but their prices suck outside of the sales, I've purchased most of the games the last year from CD key retailers and Greenman Gaming purely because Steam actually isn't competitive.
As for Steam being bloatware, I'm not convinced. It virtually never gets in the way of me buying, patching or running my games, I cant say the same for GFWL however.

@TsaebehT: are you sure you "own" the game? are you sure it's "forever"?
You own the game as long as they let you. They have no obligation to compensate you in case they decide to close steam, or remove the game or whatever. They get to decide and their word is final.
And about the fact that you buy game game on PC and you will have it in all PCs but on consoles it's different, you are wrong.
If I buy, let's say, Biohazard on PS3, I can play it on any PS3.
PCs and consoles are not the same. You can't compare them on the same terms (I'm not defending consoles here)
I didn't understand what you meant about HD Remake/Collection part though. Does it mean if I buy BioHazard 1 (the original 1996 version) in steam I also get the new HD Version (the Game Cube one) as well?
On the other hand, piracy didn't create any mess. It's people greed that creates it.
People should be educated about buying original products.
People should buy original product out of their own free will because they believe it's the right thing to do, not be forced to do so (which is what DRM does)
Forcing someone to do something attacks that person's ego and in return, they will do the opposite of what you want them to do forcing you to enforce even more what you did in the first place and creating an even bigger reaction from the other part. And the circle goes on.
That's how you create "DRM mess".
I might be wrong here but, to me from what I've seen so far, people seem more inclined to pirate steam games rather than GOG games.
I don't feel any kind of guilt pirating steam games and yet, I can't bring myself to pirate a GOG one.
DRM "really isn't going anywhere" because people keep embracing it. Stop buying DRM stuff and we'll see what happens to DRM (of course, noone will stop buying so we will never get to see it).
Piracy isn't affecting companies in the way the say.
I'd like to recommend Sourth Park episode "Christian Rock Hard". The plot applies perfectly to the game industry (gabe newell would be Lars Ulrich in that episode)
And about unification and competition... they both have pros and cons.
With competition, nobody tells you what to do but like you said, there's no standard to follow.
With unification, everything works under one "concept" but you have lower your head and say "yes, sir" to anything the current tyrant tells you to.
None is better, it's just a matter of "what bothers me the least".
And about gabe newell being the devil... I never said he was although I will say I don't like what he's doing.
There's a blog post I found by chance sometime ago that I'd like to share with all of you:
http://0verhyped.com/2012/04/17/discussing-valve-and-how-theyve-become-the-george-lucas-of-gaming/
I usually read stuff and move on but this post... I felt I should save the link. It's very well written and addresses many problems about gabe newell and valve.
You might or might not agree but, please, give it a read.
@Foulplay99: I really hope you are right about steam not becoming a monopoly.
And about Games for Windows Live, I never had a problem with it, which I always found strange being a microsoft product and all.

Why does almost every thread need to transform in a piracy/non-piracy or pc/console thread...
You like consoles good for you!! You like PC good for you go and use that!
You want to pirate games... Good for you! You want to buy games...Good for you!
To be realistic PC/consoles target DIFFERENT PEOPLE... A few VS masses....and i'll stop here...
Piracy? Well think about it... before coming here and tell us we should be indoctrinated...err "educated" to buy EVERY CRAP THEY TROW US (sometimes for ridiculous sums) that Piracy appeared because it was needed and people WERE/ARE fed up with the same feudalistic approach we are given... Dig some old history books and see when was the first so-called "piratic" act ever recorded and mostly WHY!
Anyway back to topic: I am looking forward to giving SteamOs another kick ;))
PS: If my post post sounded threatening.. is not...just a bit tired and lazy to type a better one;)) So, I'm not picking on anyone;))

The points about consoles was that with Nintendo you have to buy the same 'eShop' game over and over again to be able to play it on other consoles and if I upgrade to a PS4/XBone I for the most part can't play any of my PS3/360 games, Microsoft and Sony haven't exactly been very friendly about backward compatibility and the fact that you even need an 'HD' Remake to play the same game at a higher resolution is ridiculous, no? I've bought better monitors, better GPUs all the while enhancing the same exact game ... my point is Steam/PCs suck less.
As far as games go, no one has the right to play a game they haven't either made themselves or purchased. That mentality sucks, you shouldn't be forced to play a game but you should be forced to f'n pay for it if you're going to play it ... a ton of talented artists and Devs created that game and sometimes those same talented artists and Devs lose their jobs when games don't sell, whole companies going under. It didn't used to be this bad ... greed goes both ways, people's feeling of entitlement coupled with people tired of entitled people stealing their hard work is what created DRM, you can candy-coat it anyway you want to make yourself feel better but every little bit hurts the industry and not in the way you'd hope, the fat cats at the top are still the fat cats at the top ... the talented artists and Devs on the other hand, I've seen them get axed in the first month or two of sales ... and loved the game.
Pirating a 'Steam' game to 'hurt' Steam/Valve is just plain asinine ...
Edit:I wasn't talking about Piracy I was talking about Steam/DRM ;P

Wholeheartedly agree with your viewpoint. The multi-pc single account experience has been a nightmare, with syncing issues causing game instability and system hangs resorting in unavoidable hard resets, due to intrusive home streaming and enforced cloud back-ups. A hard reset has a nasty habit of switching those supposedly helpful facilities back on by default after re-entering steam, further compounding any problem. I'm now actively buying steam-free game installation disks wherever possible now, and have cut right back on steam related gaming. Having read recently of a steam account holder who had gotten on the wrong side of a steam moderator, he promptly lost access to his account which had a game library which had exceeded 250 games. He was beyond distraught as he had no legal recourse whatsoever. I find this deeply worrying as gaming pc's are essentially becoming steam consoles. The more games you buy, the deeper in you get.

I'm not going to judge you, but you'll have to answer to someone eventually.

That guy was violating Steam's TOS and playing dumb about it. He was in no way, innocent.
But to his credit, "he was not pirating".
I'm with Helifax though.
I'm excited to see Steam endorcing and advancing Microsoft alternatives.
I wish more demos were available before purchasing since 3D working adds another variable to the mix. I have 688 games in my steam library that I wish I truly owned.

I'm happy that your personal experience with steam has been a good one. I however have not had your good fortune and reserve the right to my opinion. I have no idea as to the innocence or otherwise of this individual and I'm quite sure that both you and I are very glad to hear that he did not pirate anything. From what I could gather, I can only assume that he had actually paid for all of those games, not rented them. A so-called "agreement" signed with steam is nothing of the sort, if it's the only game in town, or do you think that consumer choice is of no importance anymore? Developer's rights should be protected, but not at the cost of consumer's rights.

Did I say that you didn't have the right to your own opinion? Did I say that my Steam experience has been a good one? You like to conjecture apparently.
That guy was buying games cheap in his country and selling/trading them for a profit. Thus violating TOS. I was just pointing out that he wasn't some kind of innocent victim.

I'm not completely close-minded on the subject, I don't want to be lumped in with those other 'tyrants' ... there's always special cases, like that 'guy' is entitled to download 'his' games as long as he purchased them whether he was banished from Steam or not and if someone was say working on a fix for 3D Vision well that's kind of a special case where the 'good' far outweighs the 'evil' but it still doesn't entitle them to own the game. Just like I'm extremely anti-people stealing 3D Vision/3DTV Play but on the other hand if NVIDIA refuses to update the software to support their Displays then that's their own loss and you do whatever it is you have to do to make it work ... but you're not entitled to it just because you don't need the 'glasses' and if they eventually do update it to support your Display then you kind of are obligated to buy it.
... anyway enough of my ethics. Lol. I am excited about SteamOS, I've always wanted a gaming OS one with less overhead and more of a direct control over the hardware, but I am a bit concerned about Stereoscopic 3D on it. It seems like they're only focusing on VR and not really on S3D at all. It'd be insane if the VR API could just handle a 3D Display as well without all the VR specific bells and whistles but so far it doesn't look like anything is hinting around that that may be the case.

It'd be insane if the VR API could just handle a 3D Display as well without all the VR specific bells and whistles but so far it doesn't look like anything is hinting around that that may be the case.
What is SteamOs? SteamOS is a Debian Linux-based operating system in development by Valve Corporation designed to be the primary operating system for the Steam Machine game consoles.

Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system. SteamOS is being designed and optimized for the living room experience.

As an example: Torchlight 2 is getting Linux support along with cross platform multi-player
•Game saves are compatible across PC, Mac, and Linux platforms
•You may redeem[support.runicgames.com] your non-Steam key on Steam if you purchased Torchlight II before February 2, 2015.

@ToThePoint
That guy was violating Steam's TOS and playing dumb about it. He was in no way, innocent.
But to his credit, "he was not pirating".
I'm with Helifax though.
I'm excited to see Steam endorcing and advancing Microsoft alternatives.

That guy was buying games cheap in his country and selling/trading them for a profit. Thus violating TOS. I was just pointing out that he wasn't some kind of innocent victim.
... anyway enough of my ethics. Lol.
