"green FPS overlay" are back, could you remember me where to deactivate it? I can't remember ;)
Ah - sorry folks, I keep forgetting to remove this... I will do so in the next release.
I just want to add my contribution to the "how the hell do I make this game work" thread, because I have similar issues to most people as well. One thing I found that always causes my shaders to not load is when, after starting a new, I choose "load" and pick a save game. Always without fail the shader fix does not load. However, if I just go straight to "continue", they always do load, and without fail. So if I want to load save game, I have to do it in two steps - load it, get into the level, quit (by killing process), restart and pick "continue". I find that I can play for a long time after that, and unless I am messing with the debugger and shader hunting etc I see very few crashes.

Actually, I see the same thing but I did more testing and have a better explanation:
- It doesn't matter if you hit LOAD or CONTINUE.
- FIRST time you load a LOCATION (after a fresh reboot of the PC) the game will take a WHILE to load... you can see this if you measure the HDD activity. THIS IS WHEN THE FIX BREAKS!
- If you quit TO MAIN MENU (doing the alt+tab trick) and LOAD/CONTINUE the game (+ ALT+TAB trick) the fix will re-enable.
=> Game is pre-loading a lot of stuff. I think it puts it in the so called "Virtual Memory" = pagefile (which doesn't get purged until you restart Windows) and this is WHEN the fix is disabled (during the pre-load state)!!!
In ANY other CASE if the fix disable itself => quitting to main menu and resuming afterwards will fix the problem.
This what I constantly see (doesn't matter what config you have).

Removing KB 2670838 - "The EVIL UPDATE" made a heck of a difference to me.
I'm running SLI BF4 profile on latest drivers and have loads of issues (as to be expected), but removing 'the evil update', means i can now load with shader cache on, which i couldn't before, and interestingly... It has fixed the frustum! Before i had (as i believe most do) issues with the effect and polygons not rendering at the extreme sides of the screen (worse so than most other games). Deleting that win update fixed this perfectly, on top of allowing me to run with shader cache on and not getting broken shaders.
The overall 3D fixes have turned this game into an incredible thing, and i am impressed by how much all of you can achieve when you put your heads together (both in terms of 3D and stability fixes). Now let's just hope Bioware and nVidia can come up with a fix for the stability overall :)

Ever since I removed that update I have had next to 0 issues with the fix breaking with the shader cache on and absolutely none with it off. (minus the crashes which can be circumvented with alt+tab)
Occasionally it will still fail to load a shader or two but its very rare. This is going from the game pretty much failing to load correctly every single time and me having to practically reset everything for it to work (as documented earlier)
Mike and Helifax, this is interesting findings Ill play around with this and see how it acts for me.
Jason.
Your global profile doesnt look any different from mine. But I think I would be more interested to see if there are any differences between the default DA:I profiles of people who get it to work and those who don't.

This is my experience as well. I just tried using the DAI profile with SLI and shader cache on and tried the steps Helifax describes above about the first load being broken and then going back to main menu to reload. I could not make that work. I just kept getting broken 3D or it would crash on me. Though, I did try it with 347.09.
Necropants, I suspected our profiles might be the same since we get such similar results. Helifax, would you compare your global profile to mine posted earlier?
I have run into one issue while 3D is working properly. I am not sure if this is a known issue or actually just a odd ball shader that is actually broken. Sometimes when I use search the highlight will be at either HUD or screen depth (not sure which as for now I have HUD at screen depth).
I captured a screen shot where one item highlighted is at proper depth and the other is not. Is that fixable? I have never tried to post a stereo image here so I am not sure if I did this right or not.

Hi - as it happens I saw this last night when interacting with a character (it was a purple outline). I've not seen it before. We did not need to fix any of this stuff, it was working out the box, so I will try and track it down and see if it is some odd shader that is different to others.

Hi, thank you for looking into it. It is not a big deal but a little disorienting. It seems to be happening with things like crafting and upgrade tables and some chests or boxes I come across. So far it seems that most books are at the correct depth, but signs are not. I am still early in the game so I have only been in Haven but there are many highlights for me in Haven at the wrong depth.
Also, I just started doing some of the "training" quests in Haven (such as learning how to craft, upgrade, etc) and just walking around in Haven I have had the 3D break several times. Each time I had to save and reload, but at least with shader chache on it is not too long a process. Once it broke during a cinematic conversation with Solas and it was very hard to even get through the dialog with the screen all messed up.
So far the quirks are still worth it as it does look great in 3D.

Uhh, there is more to this puzzle.....
First I cannot stress enough how important it has been to REMOVE the so called evil kb update. It just causes chaos!
I Just got off a session of a few hours, with the Shader cache OFF. (After Helifax and Mikes suggestions didn't resolve any zoning issues with the shaders for me particulary)
But, At this point I know exactly how to make my machine render incorrectly or perfectly every time.
With shader cache ON I actually very seldom get an issue on load with some shaders broken, but its vastly reduced from before and in some zones, groupmate configurations, I don't even notice it. Once I removed the Microsoft platform update. Only one screen element appears to be out and it is usually related to the loot highlights and certain assets like the female mage robe. (like Jason points out) It's actually kinda random.
So, To experiment I turned shader cache off again....
Not only did I not get any broken effects the entire session. I actively zoned to Skyhold a number of times and not with not a single crash!!!!
Alt+Tab was not touched a single time...
When I eventually did crash it was a CTD in Skyhold on the second floor, in the research tower. I have seen this before however even in 2D. It's not a load screen.
This was also all with Vsync on forced through control panel to adaptive. (off in game) and letting windows decide visual OS elements.
Only things I think I have changed at this point.
Honestly my machine is pretty damn fast (moderately overclocked 4.6ghz Devils Canyon i7 on an SSD) so at this point I am going to leave the Shader cache off after all, the load times aren't really slightly painful and its a small price to pay for a stable game...
At this juncture purely for my own record, I am going to take an image of my machine, and try to do some sort of concise and brief write up recording my settings on everything I consider relevant.
I have since had a couple of crashes after multiple zones (usually right after a cutscene to zone) but other than that its a exponentially more stable. disturbing it with an Alt+tab is actually generally breaking the fix for me instead.
This has to be the wierdest situation I have ever come across in my 30 years of gaming, no joke..

That is not a broken shader...
That is a shader that the 3D Vision automatic failed to steereorize (aka broken 3D effect). If you just reload it should fix it... I've seen this multiple times (very rare though)...
- Regarding the GLOBAL Pofile... Mine is exactly the same as yours... so not sure what is going on there..
@necropants:
-Yes, I understand and know what you are saying;)) That's why we decided to put the shader cache OFF in the first place, as it being ON introduces some random things...
- For me ALT+TAB is kinda needed... otherwise I do get a crash in a load screen...
- For crashes in cinematics ... are you using FWS? or playing the game without it? (I get alot of crashes in cinematics without it:) )
PS: I see I also have the famous patch (KB2670838) installed on my system on 25/12/2013 interesting... yet for me it doesn't seem to be a grief...hmm

I follow the setup to the letter as a baseline and then experiment. So yes FWS is always on.
I should clarify, the crashes occur When a cinematic plays and then zones into a new area, as per missions such as companion quests often do. I don't get crashes on general cinematics.
Yeah that issue with the shader cache on is definitely a fail to stereoize a shader they aren't broken. (another reason I have at this point abandoned the idea of playing with shader cache on even though its rare it eventually happens.)
I also notice if I don't use the registry change to disable 3d on startup, only turning on 3d once I am in a zone. I will get problems with the fix breaking as I am running around. Otherwise it works flawlessly.
As for the "evil update" I have played around with it on and off and if I have it installed I have to perform a voodoo ritual and reset virtually my whole machine before the game will render right on load (even with shader cache off) as soon as I took it off its back to normal again. I think this a good part of the reason why my game is all of a sudden stable on zone as well.
I can't help but keep going back to the fact me and Jason for example have to use the battlefield 4 profile in SLI I think this is the cause of the anomlies and differences between how the game works for the rest of you.
If I play on default profile with SLI off the game is virtually flawless.
The issues with the default profile in SLI for me are weird it appears to engage properly with the fix apart from some text elements and for some reason the textures are all corrupt and whited out in places.
Along the lines of Jasons thoughts on the global profile can one of you who have the game working in SLI on the default profile post up some screens of how it is on your machine? I would like to check if there are any differences.
I figure if I can sort out the cause of why this profile works for some and not others in SLI Ill be able to put up one last configuration post up on here and bow out =)

Can you provide a screenshot of this? I am using the default profile and I do see some "whited" textures here and there but I thought that is how the engine renders them as it is specific to different zones and especially lighting in that zone!!!

How do you remove it?

I could not make it work so here is a link to the image on my Google Drive.

@necropants:

Wait, wait wait!!!
Can you provide a screenshot of this? I am using the default profile and I do see some "whited" textures here and there but I thought that is how the engine renders them as it is specific to different zones and especially lighting in that zone!!!
