Welcome Ted_R, and thanks for sharing your great experience. As 3D users we get a lot of gloom and doom, and it's always fun to be reminded how awesome it actually is. Unlike other forums, you will find everyone here has an abiding love of 3D. I've been using 3D Vision for almost 5 years now, and I still say Woooow. Here is another thread that you will probably find interesting, where people were sharing their path to 3D Vision.
Ray. Man. Legends. Required playing. SO fantastic in 3D. Origins was my first 3D experience and it's one of my top 3 gaming experiences of all time. It's incredible.
Did you play Trine 1/2? These games simply blow me away in 3D, I sit there sometimes and I just can't get enough. I tried Rayman Legends demo yesterday and it looks sweet as well, but not as sweet as Trine. And Metro 2033 will forever remain in my memory as one of the most thrilling game experiences ever. So many more games to enjoy, largely thanks to the guys here who help fix them!
I've been using 3D Vision for almost 5 years now, and I still say Woooow.
A big phat plus one! I still gush over 3D. When I sit down with people on my rig and they see what I see i.e. properly set up 3D, they all gush too. My favourite anecdote (you've all heard it), a media studies teacher colleague was quite vocal in his anti-3D rhetoric; I demo'ed Portal 2 and the time it took from its fade from white intro was all it took for him to announce 3D wasn't a gimmick. I have said this so many times, I am convinced professional reviewers stick rigorously to nvidia's defaults. Why else aren't they gushing too?

Convergence is a pretty tricky thing too. It's so simple to understand after somebody takes the time to explain what you're shooting for, but this is completely ignored. No explanations for noobs. And then it's locked away in advanced features and isn't even enabled by default. People mistakenly think they shouldn't touch it. I'm still convinced a significant portion of the mainstream Oculus Rift buzz is people finally seeing 3D on a PC rig and seeing what it can do. I've had that position from day one. And had to nod my head when someone from Star Citizen (think it was none other than Chris Roberts himself) spent a lot of time discussing the same thing in one interview.

There's even a "ToggleAutoConvergence" Key in the registry (Ctrl+F8) that sounds like it could be a very useful thing but for whatever reason it was either never implemented or phased out. I think it could work really well if you could set a max 'convergence', just like you do with depth, and it would keep the scene within those constraints.

Like I was playing Serious sam HD. 1.4 convergence is normal 3 is high. Borderlands 2 80 convergence is average 140 is high.

Yeah it's just a thought, but if you could set a max separation on the 'front' plane like you can on the 'back' plane then they could all be relatively equal, something like a V setting for FPSs and an X setting for TPSs. Sure it wouldn't work 100% of the time but it might be able to keep cutscenes among other things in-check from popping too far out of the screen because it wouldn't pass that 'front' separation setting. A 'V' setting would = 0% (aligned) and and 'X' setting might equal Depth (crossed), or more or less depending on your tastes.

Hello to all, My bad for necromancing an older thread, but I read some things that intrigued me and have a few questions for the veterans out there: 1) I've had 3d vision for around 2 years now, but never bothered tinkering with settings like convergence and did not have time to play games. I now have some extra time on my hands (mainly due to retiring, finally) and would absolutely love to try my hand at some (new to me) games like Mass Effect and Skyrim. I have already discovered the Helix mod - but is there anything else I should be doing / installing? 2) Convergence / laser crosshair / other 3D vision settings: Should I be changing settings / what are some good settings for a game such as Mass Effect 3? If this information can be found elsewhere, just say so :) Thanks
Hello to all,

If this information can be found elsewhere, just say so :)

hi Skorostrel, definitely mess about with the settings! I played Mass Effect 3 for roughly 350 hours, 2 playthroughs, and about 300 hours of the online horde mode multiplayer, and pretty much all of it in 3D. For convergence take off your 3D glasses, hold down whatever key you have assigned to Increase Convergence for roughly 5-10 seconds, and you will see the split 3D image of Commander Shepard or your multiplayer avatar slowly merge into a single 2D image. Once the avatar is perfectly set at 2D put your glasses back on you should see your character perfectly at screen depth, and if you increase the convergence some more they will start to pop out of the screen. Be aware that this effect is AMAZING, but if you increase it too much it becomes uncomfortable, and your character gets progressively smaller. This "getting smaller" effect is also sometimes called 'toyification' because things look like small models you could pick up and play with. This effect is amazing in games like StarCraft 2, and anything where you see your character in 3rd person. Try it in Dead Space or Batman Arkman Asylum/City/Origins. Some games like Tomb Raider 2013 have quite a dynamic camera, so you might have to choose a happy medium with the convergence settings, and to be honest you will get used to setting it up individually for each game - there is no single universal "best" setting as our eyes and preferences are all different, and a lot of us are using different equipment at varying view distances. After you set the convergence up to your personal preference, set your depth as high as is comfortable. On my Asus 27" screen I use 60% depth in most games, and on my Acer projector with roughly 100" image I use a depth hack for extra depth and set depth to 100% of the new increased value in almost all games. The laser crosshair is for 1st person shooters or Skyrim type games where you may have to disable a static 2D crosshair, and you can use the NVidia crosshair instead, which is dynamic and 3D, although in most new games this function seems to be broken. The Helix mod fix for Mass Effect 3 has O and P set to toggle self shadows on and off, as they sometimes look screwed up, and Y U I to set the UI convergence out of screen depth, at screen depth, or slightly into the screen, IMO using the I preset looks the best. A lot of the Helix fixes have settings so you can set and save 2 individual depth and convergence presents, either for watching cutscenes where convergence is often broken, or for 1st person shooters when you aim down sights (lower depth and convergence makes aiming down sights much easier).

Self shadows was stealth patched in recently. Not that they make a big deal. Just saying cause it was mentioned.
