Underrated 3D games.

Woah, hold up. Shadows work? Edit: Nm, that sonic all stars racing[1]. Transformed is sequel[2]. You got first one there. First one has working shadows. Second one I had to rip them. First one is practically 3d vision ready out of the box. You dont need to refilm the first one or anything. It was a stupid hud fix when I first started. It just makes aiming/hud a bit easier to look at. It was one of those "got to start somewhere games."
Morrowind with the very popular v3 Graphic Overhaul. You'd be surprised how good this makes Morrowind look now. The shader for the new godrays is even perfect in 3D with the rays appearing to have depth and in the right positions. Just turn off the distant lands option after instal. http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/mods/36945/?
Is it just me or is it impossible to get a decent framerate with this mod? I'm sure its not brilliantly optomized, but in 3D I struggle to break 25FPS with an overclocked 780 and 3570k at 4.5. You say to turn distant lands off, is that why? I remember testing it like that but its just so much more gorgeous with it on its hard to not use it.

I was pretty active in ES forums during the Morrowind and Oblivion time periods, and this is what I remember learning. Granted, this is from other arm-chair forum members, but at the time the particular discussions sounded legit.. The engine at this time (and for Oblivion) render scenes from furthest away, towards you... most rendering engines do the opposite. Because of this the renderer can't do back face culling. Meaning, it can't determine what polygons the player can't see and skip rendering them. This eats up VRAM as well as taking longer to render. Also most of the architecture, like building and such, were just stuck into the ground at various depths by the developers. There's entire sections of the building you can't see, period (I saw how severe this was in screenshots using the TES editor). The engine still has to render all the out of view polys too. I doubt the engine scales down the number of polys for distant objects also, hence why it's still crappy on modern hardware when you're rendering out to the horizon with distant lands checked. Plus the engine's just not as efficient as modern code, and who knows how well the mod jives with the moded technique being used. These are all the reasons you have to be real conservative when using those Oblivion mods that render far away architecture, and your frames drop to nothing when you face the Imperial City. If you turn off distant landscapes your framerates should jump significantly. I get perfectly smooth frames with AA and even 4x Super Sampling for alpha to coverage. I know it sucks, but I just consider Morrowind to be a very foggy place and in it's own way it IS lore since that's how it was originally designed :p Though, yes.. any future visits to Morrowind will very probably be less foggy.. strange problems with the dew point during the time period in that part of the world..?. Anyways, you get to play in 3D.. I'm sure it's just a matter of playing enough and you'll acclimate to playing it like that. Just to be clear for others, there's reasons other than frames that you have to turn off distant lands in stereo gaming with Morrowind. It doesn't render correctly. The only other things that render incorrectly (*cough* hint *cough*) that I've noticed are the moons, but it's not horrible. They're just slightly closer in the sky than they should be (the night sky is no where near as bad as un stereo fixed Skyrim). Edit- I use this guy's list for all the remaining gameplay tweeks. All the asthetic mods in this list are covered by the graphic overhaul mod I linked earlier. Very... entertaining descriptions http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html

Interesting, seems a really stupid way to have the game render. I guess you are right about the fog, it does add to the atmosphere. I was dumbstruck at how small the map really is once you take away the fog that hides its size. Still holding out for the Skyblivion mod (Oblivion running on the Skyrim engine, similar to Morroblivion). That will be truly amazing.

I would so buy an official port of previous games to whatever the current ES engine is if Bethesda did that. They better at least do it when they figure they're on their final ES game and ready to hang their hats concerning Tamriel. ..no, who am I kidding.. all the console players will bitch.. "Why do I have to READ all the dialogue??". edit- and to be fair, I've heard more than once that internally Bethesda was never very happy with the Gambryo engine after buying the license for it.

Not sure it counts as underrated, but it's fairly unknown at least in 3D gaming. Limbo. Side scrolling 2D game play in the virtual 3D display world, like Trine. Super impressive.

I've been toying around with Call of Cthulu: The Dark Corners of the Earth; it's on my Halloween playthrough list. It seems to work well in 3D. The only problem I've seen is the sky being at the wrong depth, which seems to be a problem in many games. Fortunately, the sky isn't a big deal, at least not in the first few areas that I've seen. I've got this game set up with a cool SweetFX configuration that adds vignette and a bit of sepia-toning to make it look like a creepy old movie. Also, I've played a bit of John Woo's Stranglehold in 3D. It works alright, but needs Helix fixing to be really playable. It has a 2D crosshair that doesn't turn off, and water reflections that show only in one eye.

-Avatar: The Game -Uncharted 3 (I played it on HMZ-T1 with screen size tweaking. Looks awesome, at times almost on par with Tomb Raider) -The Secret World -Toy Soldiers -Inversion Also Skyrim. Yes, Skyrim. Many played it in 3D but only few played like it should be: with mods, tweaks and ENB.

I've not tried it in 3D, but Call of Cthulu is one hell of a game. Definitely DX9, and if there's only one issue perhaps someone could fix it? Before Amnesia came out, it held the title of best horror game for me.

I started then gave up. Thought there would be no/little interest. I think it had two issues. Skybox was wrong depth, something minor. And I disabled the static filter based on preference[I have a feeling some horror fan wants to stab me]. TBH, I skipped it because I figured anyone who wanted to play it could regardless and its old enough that they probably did. Skybox being at wrong depth isnt a huge deal in it because its high up and FPS so less convergence. In all honesty, people dont care that much about old games especially if they could play it before anyways. There is also that sega game with the crazy hobo's.... I forget name. I BELIEVE its on wrong profile though but looks pretty good. Its ringing a bell. EDIT: Condemned: Criminal Origins . If it had anything wrong with it it wasn't major. Hitting people with two by fours in 3d was nice.....

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners and Condemned: Criminal Origins ... now we're talking. :D I started both in 3D to see how they were, previously finished both on Xbox, with Cthulhu for some reason the doors just seemed odd to me, too wide? But still it was really good. And Condemned was excellent from what I played ... I just got sidetracked trying out and messing around with Wii controls for it ... Both excellent games for their time ... if you're into horror games like I am. :) Still trying to get a deal on Silent Hill: Homecoming. Silent Hill 2 is also really good in 3D with the widescreen hack, it just uses DirectInput and not XInput so rumble wasn't working with my wireless 360 controller. I can either use XBCD drivers with a wired controller or these 'other' lesser know drivers (xi.win7.x64.en) for the wireless one I found after some extensive googling ...

I'm playing through Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter right now in 3D, and it's pretty impressive. The game is ridiculously intense, with thousands of enemies attacking you in each level. So many Kleer bones have flown out of the screen at me, you'd think I'd need a shovel to dig out! The 3D problems in the Serious Sam HD games are minor, and can be fixed by creating a user.cfg file to disable the dynamic lighting and shadow options. The water reflections on a few levels are wrong also, and there is a .cfg file variable dealing with reflections, which might disable them (haven't tried). You can also disable the crosshair and use the nVidia laser sight. Here's a link to some Serious screenshots: http://photos.3dvisionlive.com/Pyrocles/album/51a6c7d85ec346cb4a00016f/
