Mulitple Monitors Issue
Hey new to forums, My issue: I built a new rig last christmas. X79 Sabertooth MB, 64 gig RAM, i7-3930k, GTX 690, Asus 27" 3D monitor, & 3d Vision kit. It has been running games (both 3d & 2D) & 3d movies just great. Love it! Well I had another older computer that had 4x 2D monitors (3X 22" & 1x 24"). I used this computer for odd things. It finally blew either MB or CPU, not worth fixing for me atm. So I took out the GT 560 video card I had in it & put in my new rig. I kept the 3D 27" monitor in the 1 position on the GTX 690, plugged in the 2D 24" into the 2nd position, plug in one 2D 22" for third position of the outputs of the GTX 690. the other two 2D 22" monitors I plugged into the GT 560 that I added to the rig. So total of 5 montiors on my new machine. I can not get my 3D vision to work now on my 3D 27" monitor. Is this because I plugged in 2x 2D monitors on the same video card (GTX690) that my 3D monitor is on? Is it not possible to be able to use my 3D monitor in this setup? How can I fix this? Only have the one 3D 27" monitor plugged into the GTX 690. Remove the other two monitors. Get a third video card for those 2 monitors? so setup would be like below: GTX 690 - one 3D 27" monitor (primary screen) GT 560 - one 2D 24" & one 2D 22" monitor GT 650? - two 2D 22" monitors Would the above setup work? I really would like to have my 3D vision back, but still have my other 4 monitors. Thanks
Hey new to forums,

My issue:

I built a new rig last christmas.

Get a third video card for those 2 monitors? so setup would be like below:

GTX 690 - one 3D 27" monitor (primary screen)
GT 560 - one 2D 24" & one 2D 22" monitor
GT 650? - two 2D 22" monitors

Would the above setup work?

I really would like to have my 3D vision back, but still have my other 4 monitors.

Thanks

It's possible that when you added the monitors, your 3D monitor no longer became the 'focus' display. In order for 3D to work, your 3D monitor must be the 'main' monitor (with your start menu and desktop icons, etc..). It IS possible to run 2D monitors off of the same card as a 3D monitor - I have just such a setup. But go into Nvidia control panel and make sure your 3D monitor is the main display. Also, for a time, and I can't remember what driver it was, but I was unable to activate 3D when a 2D monitor was also activated. I had to deactivate the 2D monitor within the Nvidia control panel, and then 3D would work fine. Recent drivers seem to have corrected the issue. Maybe that's your problem? You might try a clean driver install if the first solution isn't the answer.

I do have the 3D monitor set as primary. But I do notice something on boot, the bios start up screen comes up on the 2D 24" screen connected to the 2nd position of GTX 690. But after the bios startup, windows comes up on the 3D monitor. Is there something else I need to do other than set the 3d monitor as primary? I do not understand your term 'focus' display. Also notice that after windows loads & all monitors comes up, I have the same toolbar on each monitor. I am running 64-bit Windows 8. Thank you for your help & glad to hear it should work, if I can get things right.

Well there are two terms for monitors in NVidia control panel iirc,... maybe 'focus' isn't the right term, but basically there should be two different symbols showing up on the rectangular box representing your 3D monitor in the "Multiple Monitors" section of the CP. I'm sorry but I'm at work right now, and cannot verify that - I'm going off of memory. I know one of the symbols should be an asterisk. And I think the other is a green square. Your objective is basically telling the software that you want games to run on the 3D monitor (thus the focus display) which also has to be the 'main' monitor from the standpoint of the OS. I didn't catch before that you are on Windows 8. I'm not familiar with that OS at all. But on Win7, you can also choose which is the main monitor by right-clicking on the desktop and going into the 'personalize' settings. As for the boot screen showing up on a different monitor, that's somewhat normal. Mine does the exact same thing in fact. Your issue may also possibly have something to do with "Multi-GPU" setup. Go into NV control panel and see if you are set to "Maximize 3D Performance" or not. In order to use more than two monitors, you must have "Multi-GPU" disabled. Finally, I am uncertain how you are referencing the positions of the DVI connectors on your 690. I have one as well, and from a design standpoint, the orientation of the connections doesn't make much sense. It is a dual-GPU card, and one connection goes to the secondary GPU, while the others go to the other one. I don't know why they didn't label them, but the top left position is on GPU B, while the middle and lower left DVI connector is on GPU A. - You may, therefore, want to insure that your 3D monitor is connected to one of the 'A' connections. I don't know that it would make a difference, but it's worth trying. Keep in mind, and this is something that I just learned yesterday(!), that if you have more than two monitors active, you are not using the full potential of the GPU when gaming. If you select "Maximize 3D Performance" it is like running your GPUs in SLI mode, which is much more powerful of course.

I seem to remember having problems with my two 2d monitors once I switched to 3Dvision. My solution was to plug the 2D monitors into the onboard graphics slots. Though I think your mb doesn't have onboard graphics, right? Something that may make all of this easier for you is Display Fusion. Since you've got a gazillion monitors I highly recommend it, as it gives you much more control over your different monitors. Among other things, it lets you set up hotkeys for profiles (for example you could set up a profile that turns off all 2D monitors and use a hotkey to activate that profile just before you play a game), lets you have different wallpapers on each, etc.
Display Fusion
For anyone using two or more displays, this is a fantastic app with more functionality than Ultramon. Have you ever wanted a taskbark on that second screen? Or a hotkey to snap apps that pop up on your display that is turned off onto the one that is turned on? https://store.steampowered.com/app/227260/DisplayFusion/ Lots and lots of functionality, very cheap in the current Steam Sale. Watch YouTube videos and read Steam discussions to understand it's usefulness.
