So I wanted to buy my mother a new TV and I was really surprised as I almost couldn't find the one that does not have one or another version of 3d in it(passive/active), so why is 3d considered as a niche? Sorry I'm not a TV guy I dont watch tv at all so it was a surprise for me to see that almost every tv nowadays come with 3d.
It's fairly niche when it comes to gaming, and I don't think many people actually use the 3d functionality of their TVs.
Many people don't actually know how to use it except the damn Blu-Ray 3D part..and that is it... I myself watch 3D Blu-rays on my PC but seriously the difference between watching a 3d movie and playing a game in stereo 3D is....HUGE... so I imagine most have no idea what to do with the "TV 3D" :)) except watching movies

Samsung is doing the same with I think with Gaikai, but I'm not sure since Sony recently bought up Gaikai for $380 million.
Hopefully they'll have stereoscopic support via the Grid/Cloud that helps boost the 3D Gamer ranks.
You can hear Andrew Fear discuss Grid features in this YouTube video, at the end he talks about a few places already offering trials.

So far I know only one other person with a 3D TV and he's admitted to buying 3D movies and being too lazy to bother to put the glasses on to watch them in 3D and winds up watching the 2D versions.
There's the people that hate it, for whatever reason, there's the ones that could just care less about it ... and then there's us. Let's face it we are the minority, there's more 3D equipment out there than there are people that thoroughly enjoy it, like we do.
Take a look at sound, there are so many people that could just care less about the quality and 'positioning' of the sound and it's been '3D' for how long? As far as the 'mainstream' goes even 3D full range audio is a niche, they're perfectly content with the 2 speakers in their TV.

I think its a cheap feature to "add" to a tv. But expensive to perfect if that makes any sense. Most of them are probably unplayable if they were able to be supported for 3D TV PLAY. I had a generation 1 3DTV and man was it bad. It had ghosting for just PS3 games and I didnt cheat the depth or anything.

Amen to this! There are so many people who cant tell the difference between good quality audio and visuals, and bad, that's its pretty surprising. I've seen people with their TV's set to "torch mode" where faces are luminous orange and they think it looks great :-(
After getting my Denon AV amp and 5.1 audio I've never looked back, and added to 3D it makes gaming amazing. One of my friends said one day that he thinks his £20 PC speakers sounded just as good and a little part of me died lol.

yeah I wasnt really on board with 3d when it comes to watching movies and yes gaming is so much better especially when tuned to your preferences. I hardly watched any movies in 3d since I bought 3d vision kit, tried like 3 wasn't impressed and just didnt bother with them anymore.
It was just a surprise for me that most of the TVs already have it yet neither sony or m$ haven't touch that with their new consoles. The pc gaming will benefit from new consoles immensely and I think that 3d would as well considering that there are so many people that already could play 3d games on their tvs.
@Foulplay99
hehe maybe you were listening to some overly compressed mp3 like 8bit, 16KHz :D in which case I suppose there will be little difference no matter where you play that :)

I've never understood why people dis 3D movies. When I saw my first IMAX 3D movie 12 years ago, I was like "I never want to see another 2D movie again!". Which is more or less the same reaction I had when I played my first 3D game 2 months ago.
I agree that 3D games are even better than 3D movies, but I personally find them both to be a massive improvement on their 2D counterparts. People's reluctance with 3D movies has always puzzled me just as much as people's reluctance with 3D gaming has.

3D movies are notorious for looking underwhelming due to the fact you have no control over depth or convergence, compared to a perfectly set up 3D game on PC your average movie just looks dull.
You rarely get that "window into another world" feeling, and a lot of 3D films play up to the fact its 3D rather than use the 3D as a tool to enhance what is already there - or worse they just convert the film afterwards from 2D to 3D and it just looks shit.
Maybe 3D gaming spoiled us, but I'm not as much of a film fan now as I was maybe 5 years ago and I'm not too bothered any more.

Animated stuff looks good but besides that yea, 3d movies are kind of ewww.
The "low settings" are bad but its kind of messed up in most movies. Like everything closer then X distance is 2D and eveything past X distance is in depth and scaled properly. Its kind of like the games that barely give you any convergence to use. Its a bit frustrating more then anything, but thats probably just me.

I'll admit that I haven't really watched any 3D movies since getting 3Dvision. And yes, most of the 3D movies I've seen in the past were animated. But the ones that were good were very enjoyable, and I remember feeling nicely immersed (monsters vs aliens and Up come to mind). And surely you guys agree that Avatar looked awesome!
And anyway, even mediocre 3D is better than 2D in my opinion, as long as it's not actually broken

Even the best 3D movie is probably pretty 'underwhelming' on a 3D monitor, where it's so much smaller than a big screen. As it is it's not exactly the best format for 3D, being locked into whatever 'settings' they use, there not being a real standard for the settings, and also being conservative overall in the separation to conform to a wider/younger audience.
If I'm buying a Blu-Ray and there's a combo/3D version, that's always the one I'll get. I own way more 3D movies than I've gotten around to actually watching, just like my 3D games. I agree mediocre 3D is still far better than 2D ... after all there was a time when I'd buy and watch an anaglyph 3D movie, needless to say those times have since passed. :)
It does make me wonder if there is a target screen size when they release a 3D movie for home consumption. Is it resized, or 'redepthed', for smaller TVs? Or is it the original theatrical release?

I've never watched a 3D movie on a home monitor, TV or projector. My comments above were about 3D in the cinema, which I've always found to be pretty great.
I briefly played Borderlands 2 last night it 2D. Even though it enabled me to get a silky smooth 120fps, I found the 2D so distracting! The main problem was how everything felt so scrunched up and close-together. Kind of claustrophobic.
I always thought of 3D as adding mainly immersion and atmosphere. I now realise that the way it simply creates a feeling of 'empty space' between objects in the scene is just as important, even though it may seem like a more mundane aspect than something like "immersion".
