Hi, I'm new to 3D gaming as I've only recently discovered it. Now that I know what I've been missing out on I have a question which I was hoping someone could answer for me?
First off, how much difference is there in the 2 types of 3D? I am currently just using the red/blue lens glasses on a normal monitor but rather curious about the kit (glasses, emitter and 3D monitor) do they still have different coloured lens in them? With the "cheaper" way it kinda distorts the colours (but get used to it after a while) and if I go for the big kit I want it to be much better than what I have, which is fair considering the cost (I got my current glasses from the Final Destination in 3D DVD, LOL!).
Been playing Assassins Creed II in 3D, game looks AMAZING!

As the glasses effectively only switch between closed and open, there is no discolouration going on whatsoever. Sure, it gets a little darker, but that's what the gamma settings are for.
To be fair, the entire bundle is rather costly, but you have to consider that with it you won't only play games. There is a plethora of 3D movies rolling our way, which you will be able to watch with the kit as well.
What you do have to consider tho is that to really make 3D take off, you have to have a fairly powerful rig.
Still, I don't regret getting my kit at all. I would recommend trying it out for a little bit before commiting to a purchase if you get the chance , as some people report feelings of dizziness and eye-strain from the frequent shutting of the glasses. I don't notice it personally, and apparently no one on this forum agrees with me on that, but a lot of people I have shown this setup stated that they didn't find it a comfortable viewing experince.

Thank you for the quick reply, that's just what I wanted to hear :D
Worked out it would cost me about £320 for the full kit (monitor, glasses and emitter) which I definitely want to get now, thanks for the tip on the dizziness etc, far as I know I have no issues with that type of thing, don't suffer from eye strain, dizziness, VDU headaches, vertigo etc.
Unfortunately I'm not able to "try before I buy" so think I will just go for it, as you pretty much just sold it to me ;)

Going from anaglyph (red/blue) to shutter glasses is a huge jump. I mean, in terms of depth they are about the same actually. You can still get nice depth and popout effects with old-school anaglyph. However the color experience and overall quality and clarity of the image is much better with shutter glasses. So if you like the experience with anaglyph then you will surely appreciate a real 3D setup.

I made the jump on the cheaper side and tried it with a CRT monitor I got for free and bought the 3D Vision glasses. I suggest trying that, play the Avatar game, and if you're like me you'll never want to go back to a flat screen. I've since bought a 3D projector. I've always hated anaglyph so I was hesitant at first. However, shutter glasses are so far and away better than anaglyph that it's turned me from a skeptic to a 3D nut.

Going back to the first reply, you mention about a hefty PC needed, well i've just upgraded mine to a Phenom II X4 965 black, 8gb 12800 DDR3, XFX GTX 285 1GB, Creative XFI with a raid 0 setup as well. Out of the ones ive tried they all run fine at max, i may need to turn a couple of settings down for assassins creed 2 but other than its good, so would that mean it would be ok for the "real" version of 3D? or does that require even more oomph?

I think you'll fair well with those specs. I am guessing the anaglyph and shutter glasses 3D probably are very similarly hardware intensive. My modest system fairs well, but I'm on a XGA projector (1024x768) so I can get away with quite a bit at that res.

Thanks for the info chaps, i may upgrade my GFX card again around xmas so the wife can have this one and benefit from 3D as well.
From running several 3dmark benchmarks with different versions and comparing scores, the GFX card was getting the least, wanted to get one of the new GTX400 series cards when i upgraded but they aren't out yet :(, hopefully by xmas all the driver bugs will be sorted out for them.
Now to browse some more of the forum and find more games to try!! 3D can be so exciting i feel like a little kid, lol

I'm glad I could help and even mor excited that you caught the 3D bug as well /woot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />
It really is a great way to enjoy your games, and even older titles really take on a literal new dimension.
GFX wise you should be fine. I'm running a severely oced GTX280 TriSLI setup myself and do get stutters from time to time, but that's because I'm not prepared to turn down any details.
If you get the chance, make Metro 2033 the first game you play in 3D. It absolutely blows my mind, and imho is the best 3D title around so far, with Battlefield BC2 a close 2nd.

Well, I have tried Avatar as well as Bad Company 2 and Metro2033, and my ranking is Metro then BC2 and then by a loooooooong way Avatar. You really have to try them out!

Sweet, I've been reading about metro in my mags and going to give that a try, i have bad company 2 but not got it installed yet. I did try avatar a while back but game was rubbish IMO, but will probably give it another go once I'm fully 3D :D.
On a side note, jmbuehler, what PSU do you have to run 3-way SLI? a mate of mine is thinking of doing it and wants me to build it for him, but with each card needing 2xPCIe power connectors gotta be a hefty PSU!!!
I was playing modern warfare 2 online yesterday in 3D, if only they would let you turn off the crosshair and hit detection cross thingy, that would be absolutely awesome! Sniping is much easier as well, lol

Any help appreciated, cheers
