GeForce 3D Vision Bundle + ATI graphic cards?
  1 / 2
I want to buy the GeForce 3D Vision Bundle, but I have Dual high end ATI graphic cards.

I know the specs say you have to have nvidia cards, but is that just a selling point or is there something special on the gfx cards that make them required?

I will not buy new nvidia cards just for the 3d Vision.

thanks

I know that the installer checks against the system requirements and won't install if the system reqs are not met. Maybe somebody will find a way around this, but I think the 3D effect is specific to nvidia's drivers.

3D Vision is designed to work with NVIDIA GeForce GPUs only. Please check the system requirements at www.nvidia.com/get3d.

Thanks!

is there a technical reason for this?

seems to me your are shooting yourself in the foot, saying 45% of all people can't buy this product!

http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Nvidia is 65%

I saw that requirement page, just couldn't believe it was true.

I got rid of my nvidia cards because they couldn't do dual screen SLI. ATI can.

Dual screen is more important then 3d, so guess I won't be spending the $600.

Hi There,

3D Vision is a complete kit that utilizes dedicated NVIDIA HW and a driver which only works with our HW, so unfortunately we cannot support AMD GPUs or others at this time.

I am sorry, but you still did not answer my question. I wanted to know WHAT is the technical reason why only Nvidia cards work.

What makes the nvidia cards more powerful / capable?

Is it only a driver issue?

Could this be just a marketing ploy so people buy more nvidia cards?

Sam

It is a technical reason since we write drivers that take advantage of dedicated NVIDIA HW. We have no knowledge of the AMD HW architecture to write a driver for it.

Ok, thank you for the feedback.

So it sounds like theoretically it could work if drivers were made.

Yes, all that likely is required is for AMD to make drivers to support the Nvidia 3D glasses. However, this is extremely unlikely. First off, the 3D effect is handled by the video drivers actually making a 2nd frame for every frame they receive. Even if AMD made their only implementation, it likely would not have the same results as Nvidia's solution. The thing is that the 3D support is a combination of drivers and special configs for each game. In order for AMD to support this technology, they would need to not only revamp their drivers, they would need to have a team supporting them (by releasing new driver updates and game configurations regularly). It would pretty much be suicide for AMD to dedicate that many resources to support a product released by their competitors.

To make matters even more complicated, AMD is presently working on their own version of 3D that is based on having a special monitor that can display 2 images at once (using two LCD panels stacked on top of each other). With AMD already working on their own 3D technology, it's unlikely that they would spend time supporting Nvidia's 3D product.

I just bought two 6950's, an acer gd235 montor, and 3d vision glasses and was just wondering if this driver issue was ever resoloved?

Nvidia developed 3D Vision as a feature to promote their video cards. Why would you think they are going to allow their technology to be made to work with the competition's hardware? No money in that. If you stop and think about it you will realize just how silly this question is.

No, AMD now has their own stereo 3D solution called HD3D which includes its own drivers and hardware ecosystem: http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/amd-hd3d/Pages/hd3d.aspx

Sorry sambeckett, wake up and stop dreaming. /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

3D-Vision is hooked deeply into the Nvidia-display-drivers. I don't think that AMD allows Nvidia to take such a deep look into the AMD-GPU-structure.

You can try to get lucky with the HD3D-solution - but AMD only uses IZ3D or Tridef middleware. Its not such a deep link like 3D-Vision with an Nvidia-GPU.
I did testing some time ago with IZ3D and Tridef and in most cases the Nvidia-Solution has been the fastest.
