Alice: Madness Returns (Crashing with 3D enabled)
Now all the game does is crash after selecting a player name. I reset the NCP to defaults and rebooted to no avail. Select name - crash. Where and which .ini file do I need to edit to fix this?
i'm not at my pc right now, but i should be able to help. The .ini file is found in Mydocuments:mygames:alice: then engine folder i think. It is called engine.ini or something similar. Search for framesmoothing and make it say FALSE. framesmoothing max= (i put mine from 31 to 120) Framesmoothing min = (i put mine st 30, not sure what that does though) Also i disabled vsync in this ini (set it to false) as i found it slowed the game down. i found adaptive vsync works much smoother and stops screen tearing. however other people have problems with adaptive vsync. I don't know why your game is running letterboxed. Mine runs 1920x 1080 full screen (other then in cutscenes I believe). The crash after the player name is caused by the drivers. You can use kingping's method but it makes the 3D look terrible. Please roll-back your driver to 306 as the gameworks fine on these. I just did a clean install (no unintall from control panel) and physx stayed the most up to date version. Make sure that nvidia 3D is enabled in the game menu, as i found that having it as off could make the game crash (i believe so anyway).

With it set as enabled the game hasn't crashed once, so i assume that was the problem although I have no idea what problem it would be causing. Maybe it only effects my pc, but it might save someone else who has a similar problem. As for adaptive vsync, i'm not arguing with you any longer. it is clearly documented that adaptive works with nvidia 3D. I hate screen tearing, and hate playing with vync off. With adaptive on i get the best of both words when frame rates are not always 120+. If it doesnt work for you, i'm not going to argue that it does :-).

where is that documented? is fraps reporting more than 60 fps? if you hate tearing then you definitely wouldn't like adaptive vsync. adaptive vsync disables vsync as soon as fps drop below the refresh rate (=> tearing).

Why would you get screen tearing when your fps is less than your monitor? Screen tearing happens when your frame rate is higher then your screen hz. There is no need for vsync on a game that does not get high fps (higher than your monitor can reproduce). Each frame will be rendered as a full frame on your display. If you want to continue this, please create a new topic about adaptive vsync, how it 'creates screen tearing' and 'doesn't work with 3D', as it's really taking this thread off topic.

I did find the 'enablenvidiastereoscopic' (or some such) in the config file and set it to false - the game now runs! I set the frame rate to min-60, max-120 and disabled the vsync (use NCP adaptive vsync) - Success! When I got into the game the shadows were fubar. I exited the game and did a bit more looking and there's a switch under a 'hack' section 'advancednvidiashadowworkaround' (or some such) It was set to FALSE. Setting this to TRUE and the Nvidia 3D option to TRUE the game looks almost perfect and does not crash on startup. Now all I need to do is rid myself of the "letterbox" (black stripes on top/bottom), I'm playing at 1280x720-3D, everything else I've ever played gives me a full screen - I always thought the 'letter box' thing was an artistic decision? (BTW: the game has native 360 game pad support which is always a plus for us couch/easychair gamers) EDIT: Letterbox image issue fixed. It seems this game gets the aspect ratio from your Windows Desktop setting and not from the screen resolution setting in game. My desktop is 1024x768 and I was getting a 'letterbox' game. Simply changing to 1920x1080i on my desktop enabled me to have full screen 1280x720-3D image.

Vsync types in nvidia control panel work in 3D vision. I always force vsync on unless I face an issue. First thing I do when reinstalling driver is Vsync On. Power management - max performance. Maximum pre rendererd frames - 1. I never looked into adaptive. I think its for people below monitors refresh rate/hz. I am constantly riding 60fps in game and once I enable adaptive I get tons of tearing.

Setting nvidia to false is kingping's fix, and as i have stated it BREAKS nvidia 3D in this game. Nvidia 3D should always be set as = true as far as I can tell. Shame you still have it letterboxed, it definitely works on higher resolutions at fullscreen, I can't check right now, but I think it might go letter boxed during cutscenes, but the main game is definitly 100% full screen. can't help you correct that though i'm afraid. As for xbox contoller, cheers I know that and would not be playing it without it! I advise anyone playing this to play with a control pad, no matter how much you love kb&m. The mouse felt terrible even with smoothing turned off.

Please start a new thread if you want to continue the conversation of adaptive vsync as it's not really adding anything to a fix for alice.

For anyone who hasn't played this game yet, please do. I'm only about half way through, but this is definitely one of my new favourite 3D games. Can't believe Nvidia only rated it good. That system is royally broken!

This allows the game engine to generate as many frames as possible but allows the Nvidia driver to control frame lock and swap and which frames to output or toss. In most games it probably doesn't make that much of a difference, but in others, like Dead Space, it makes a HUGE difference. Enabling Vsync in that game will make you puke, enabling it in the NVCP makes it smooth as butter (and utterly amazing in 3D with HeliX mod)
For anyone who hasn't played this game yet, please do. In fact, I would rate this game a much tamer 'M' than most slaughterfests that are constantly on offer. It is definitely a mature story, and very compelling, if one looks past the superficial gameplay aspect and focuses on the narrative. I remember on my first playthrough, and going into the story blindly, that I would encounter things that subtly felt 'off' and made me speculate about the motives of some characters, and those speculations turned out to be quite true. It wasn't that the story was cliche or obvious, but simply that it progressed very well and presented messages via some very poignant and yes, at times, disturbing ways.
