Annoying Blinking problem
  6 / 12
OK, found something interesting on this subject.... I get virtually no blinking/flashing when playing Aion. It's the only game I've encountered so far where it's not a problem. I maybe see one or two brief flashes every few minutes, but it's so rare and so minor that I have to pay attention to not miss it.

So I asked myself "what's different about Aion than every other game I've played?" The only thing that jumps out at me is the constant refresh rate. Aion (at least on my system, not sure about everybody else's?) stays at a constant 60 fps. No more, no less. It doesn't jump up and down depending on the location or animation like other game engines.

So, could constantly changing fps be the culprit? Anybody else found another game/app that has a constant refresh rate that doesn't vary? Is the blinking problem in that game/app?

okay so i had a streak of random freak occurrence that will probably interest all of you. Well, so first i switched to the shorter usb cable. The green led on the emitter turned red and everything looked all crazy red/blue. i went back into nvidia control and it had turned on discovery mode so i switched it back, but it wouldn't stay and the light stayed red. i restarted my computer and switched back to the longer cable. light turned green and i turned off discovery mode. booted up l4d and guess what? no flashes at all. not one. BUT everytime i looked at something that was highlighted (weapons/people) the whole screen went super bright. (this problem was noted by someone on the l4d problems section of this forum) I restarted the game, and the brightness was gone and still no flashes. I only tested it for about 2 minutes, but I usually get alot of flashes right when i start up the game. I will test it some more and tell you if my flashes have been fixed or not. (ive got a cevo match in 15 mins so ill do the testing after that)

update: meh, it was a fluke. but my bsod problem completely went away.
you must not be having the same problem as most of us, since we are getting the flashes in the actual lenses of the glasses. I've been using the long cable so far, I'm gonna try the shorter usb cable and see if there is any difference.
My lenses are blinking, not the monitor of course. So it is the same problem we all are having. It is not the lenses or the USB cable, but could have to do something with the processing of the USB data, depending on the hardware used.

I'm getting the blinking with the 2233RZ only with SLI enabled, not at all with the CRT, I would be interested to hear, if other CRT users or DLP users report similar problems, I guess, that the problem is linked to LCD's only.

My glasses were blinking pretty badly last night. I put them on charge overnight and they're fine now.

Not sure what wrong OP. Hope it gets handled.
Do I have a defective unit? Should I send for an RMA? Also, why didn't they make the glasses work w/o the IR emitter when they are plugged into the usb? seems like a no-brainer to me.
I second that: why doesn't it allow for a WIRED connection? As nifty as IR is, this shouldn't be used unless it is a perfected technology. I'd rather have a wire than flashing.

Also: if this is a hardware issue, I think more of us would be interested in getting a "second revision" copy of the glasses. It sucks to be an early adopter if you have a hardware issue that can't be sorted out in a new driver release.

By the way, I'll add one more gripe. Why can't the glasses just CONTINUE TO ALTERNATE AT THE CURRENT RATE when they lose the IR signal temporarily? You know, like a watch can continue to keep time outside of a periodic atomic update? The IR emitter should be there to provide an UPDATED STATUS of the synchronization -- much like the RF signal provides an updated accurate time to a clock. Missing a fraction of a second's worth of data shouldn't cause a white flash. *rabble* *rabble*
For everyone that is having a blinking or flashing problem, please answer these questions:

- Please describe the flashing. Consisntent? Only during some games? Which games?
- How frequent is the flashing? Once per second, 15 times per second?
- What does it start flashing?
Flash description: I get blinking consistent across all games, the same kind that we saw in the video that Barrow kindly provided.
Frequency: It has gotten a lot better since I run my emitter in the "IR interference mode", whatever that does to the setup. If I'm lucky, I'm getting a few stray flashes an hour, and I'm almost not noticing them. Before setting up the emitter like that, I was getting them from anywhere a couple minutes apart to a few flashes/minute.
What does it start: Nothing in particular - at least not that I noticed.

I have to add that I also have almost zero flashing in AION and it might have to do with the fact that AION runs at a steady 60FPS on my setup as well (a stable 120 FPS with 3D Vision disabled, quite impressive).

On a side note: By experimenting, I found out that using a Xenon halogen lamp for my desk (a big one with a E27 socket an no UV filter) confuses the heck outta the glasses and the flashing becomes nearly continuous, so I'm now gaming with a regular bulb at night and all is good. I'm gonna try using one of the Xenon bulbs with an UV filter at some point, maybe that works better.

Sorry if I am misisng something obvious but how do you run the emitter in "IR intereference mode" ?

In the 3d Vision setup wizard, select the option for "multiple emitters in one room". I think it strengthens the IR signal or something.

Thanks. Actually there are 3 options. One which says to choose if you have other IR devices in the room. I tried this. I still get blinking although the behaviour of the flicker is different...hard to describe. Instead of rapid flickers, you see it sticks with one eye for a second and then carry on again. My test case is the Medusa demo as thats where I get it worst.

Yes, the one that says "In a room with IR remote controls" or something like that. I swear I get less flashes that way than when selecting "Single 3D vision setup". It all very well might a placebo thing too, since that option apparently doesn't do much for other people

Things were working fine at first but I now get the Blinking issue as well.
I can't believe this, I am using a Samsung Plasma screen.
Everything was working great at first but I tell you something is seriously wrong with this product.
Hey Nvidia why did you release such a floored product and how come with every issue that pops up you can never replicate it!
Very angry customer here, ready to actually give up on 3D.
So far I have spent near $3000 dollars getting this stuff to enjoy Nvidia's supposed 3D technology.
Bought a plasma just to be able do it on a larger screen and also bought the Samsung 2233RZ + glasses bundle.
Who the hell tested this product at Nvidia because I can tell you if the average consumer is having so many issues with it, it doesn't make sense some of these issues were not picked up in testing.

im gonna have to confirm that this lessens the blinking.

I have now found out I only seem to get the Blinking issue when playing during the day time, my living room where the setup is has a lot of sunlight beaming around.
As soon as evening hits and all through the night I don't get any blinking, I have always selected the 2nd setup option when installing as well the one that says other IR devices in the same room.
I have tested this for the last 2 days in regards to playing during night time vs day time, not sure if this is cause of others blinking but it is for me.
I have thought maybe build a little cardboard box around the back of the IR emitter and put foil over that cardboard just to block the back of my IR emitter.
IR is close to the suns spectrum isn't it? Call me crazy but think I have figured out blinking issue in my regards :)
