3D movie for you all 3D movie posters
  1 / 3
Hi, I'm new here although I've been lurking for a little while. /shifty.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':shifty:' />

I'm a 3D expert in that I have been making 3D animation, holograms and lenticular 3D since 1998.

I'm currently working on several new 3D projects, the biggest being a new animated 3D TV series.

However, the most well known of my 3D work is the 3D posters that are currently in shops. I developed the technology that we use to convert 2D pictures into 3D.
It has several features that nobody else's system has, but we'll get into details later, if anybody's interested.

Meanwhile, I've edited a few of the posters together to show off what my system can do. The animation starts with the poster in 2D and then changes to the 3D version. After that, it shows some zoomed in details. The theme of this first "movie" is movie posters. I might put some others together soon if anybody's interested. You can see what posters we sell at our website.

I have provided the left and right eye animations in Mpeg2 format. This seems to be the best compromise between download size and image quality.

Here are the download links;
Left
Right
WARNING: These are big files! Each one is over 160mb and is a 720p video. It might be a good idea to right click and "save target as".
/geek.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':geek:' />

sidebyside
This version has the left eye on the left. If it appears squashed, set the aspect ratio (on the file menu) to 16:9.
This file is the same material as the two views above but is more compressed. The whole thing is only 121mb. There is some loss of quality in the dissolves, but the saving in download time might be worth it!

Very impressive work, really good depth effect with no ghosting ;)

If you don't mind me asking, how much time does it take you to convert a single poster from 2D to 3D format?

I've also joined and converted the two files into a single and smaller AVI file (Xvid compression) in side by side format for easier downloading: download

Thank you. They could be a lot deeper but this is the limit that a lenticular print can cope with.

The time varies dramatically from a few hours to a few days.

And you are doing that with a custom software by creating depth maps for the images, or not?

Do you think that the same process can be applied to movies (frame by frame) and if it can be done how long could a movie conversion take?

No, not depth maps. Something quite different. It allows me to emulate the properties of a surface, like a hologram does. You'll see examples of that in the next movie with the shine on the Mustang and the reflections in Darth Vader's helmet.

The system would be more efficient with converting a movie. The set up time would be required once per shot rather than per frame.

Not a program. This isn't a "press a button" solution. You need a skilled operator to nurse every frame, but the results are worth it.

Okay, here's an oldie but goldie (or should that be "greenie"?)

Left eye
Right eye

The idea here was that having converted an image to 3D, we can flay through it. I thought that this might be cool for a DVD or Blu-ray menu.

Very nice "flyby" effect, but here there is a bit of ghosting visible... but still this is not made from a true 3D model of Hulk, so still very good.

I've recompressed the left right side video again into a single and smaller side by side AVI file here: download

I have a tiny bit of ghosting around his feet. Is that what you're seeing?
Incidentally, that's not a result of a problem with my work.
Are you using the Samsung monitor too?

Yes, the fingers of the foot in front and a little bit on the fingers that are on the right, also at the final scene what is visible of the hand also has some ghosting. I'm currently using the ViewSonic display, not the Samsung.

well that blows. you're very good at this but i can't imagine that you'll be doing full length movies. it would take you how long to do a movie frame by frame?? i was just hoping that i could play around with my 2d movies and get em to work in 3d.

"that blows"?

I'm very sorry to disappoint you and your ambitions for your 2D movies.

You seem to have misread my previous comments. I think you'll need to rely on the existing "push button" 2D to 3D solutions.
...

..

Wait a minute.

....

Oh yes, of course, there aren't any! :)

This is no dig toward yourself. Reread what i said. It's more about the lack of a solution to a problem. Like i said you do fantastic work, not saying anything bad about you, your work, or your solution to the problem at all. No need to get all childish and start creating a problem when there isn't any.

Soon enough the Blu Rays will be out in 3D and we'll all be able to enjoy it and no need for any solution's as i'm sure older movies will be remade in 3D just like they're now being remastered in HD. Newer movies will be unbelievable and all is well. :D

they only button i'll be pushing for a solution is my blu ray players open/close button ;)

Sorry, my post is meant to be read in the voice of Stewie from Family Guy. I forgot to add that line and then couldn't post again because of "flood control" on this board (?)

The only way older movies can be re-mastered in 3D is if somebody converts them using a system like ours.
