3D Vision Built-in Emitter Missing
  1 / 2
I am trying to get my Alienware 17 laptop to display in 3D again but for some reason I can't get the Setup Wizard to detect my setup. I am running Windows 8.1 with the newest nVidia drivers on a GTX780m and was able to play in 3D on it in the past, but I am not sure what has happened. I have had work done on my screen by Dell technicians and have had to get the entire screen replaced in the past, but I believe it has worked since then.

So is there a way to make it work again without reverting to 8?

8.1 is shit for 3d, but it should at least work. Does the laptop have an internal emitter? It's possible the technician disconnected or damaged it, or maybe replaced it with a screen that wasn't 3d ready. I'd call Dell support.

Double-check that all the hardware in the Device Manager is properly installed, then maybe try a clean reinstall of Drivers? The only time I've ever had 3D completely crap out on me was when a Windows Update updated Display Drivers on me.

Yes, the laptop has a built-in emitter on the screen. I am not sure where to find drivers for it to do a clean install. Dell doesn't offer 3D screen drivers on the website but I will give them a call, my warranty just ran out but they might cover it because it is potentially their fault it stopped working.

I was checking over the screen part numbers in the repair orders on Dell's website, and it seems like it is possible that they have replaced the wrong screen in my system. I am hoping that this is not the case and that is just the part number for a full install kit.

The clean Driver install I was referring to were the GeForce Drivers, have you tried googling the part number? Might shed some light on what it was.

Well, I looked up the parts number and it is a combo kit for a cable and screen, and I did a full reinstall of windows 8 so the driver should be a clean install, also what program would you recommend for the driver clean install? My laptop is at factory settings and the IR emitter still isn't registering, what would it look like in device manager? I'm going to call them tomorrow and hopefully they will re-seat the cable for free because it seems like a faulty install while the warranty was active.

Windows 8.1 is fine for 3d I have found now Im dual booting both 7 and 8.1. Sure 8.1 you have a few extra issues to solve with some 3d stuff but performance is the same as 7, I have not come across any 3d game as of yet that benefits more from windows 7

I would not recommend using 8.1 for 3D. In general, I get pretty tired of having to fix extra problems, so I'm really not interested in having 8.1 add more to the pile. I still think the question should be phrased to ask what 8.1 buys you? Why would you leave something with higher compatibility and fewer problems? What is the big draw? Remember that corporations always lie to you. 8.1 might be better now, or it might not. I know for a fact that it blew up 3Dmigoto, ENB, and SweetFX. Also blew up Skyrim and NexusMods. Anything using dxgi.dll directly gets a fatal error now. For SweetFX I think that now you can only use the injector version. http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1024421-windows-81-killed-skyrim-nmm/ XCOM didn't work on 8.1: http://steamcommunity.com/app/200510/discussions/0/792924412019874499/ More to be found in all gaming forums. Please don't suggest that Win 8.1 is fine for 3D, it's not. The fact that you personally have not run into problems does not mean there aren't any.

SweetFX I have used with radeon pro, the dxgi.dll I have had to remove to get the game to start. I have had games that wont launch after opening them due to admin problems. But performace wise put all the other stuff aside I cant tell the difference. It just takes more messing about. Watchdogs works good with sweetFX just waiting for an external emitter to turn up so I can give 3d a go on it. Looking forward to giving your guys fix a go and thanks for all the hard work put in.

Just had a new screen installed in my laptop and new cable to the IR emitter installed but still no luck on getting the 3D screen to show up in the Setup Wizard. The tech ordered a new IR emitter in case that device has failed, if that fails Alienware said they would like to examine my laptop in depot to see if they can determine what went wrong.

Even with built in laptop emitter, I'm pretty sure you need to have the NVidia Stereo Controller in the list.

I thought so, but it doesn't show up even as a hidden device currently. I am not sure if there is a way to make it show up or if one of the needed components is missing.
