Spielberg predicts death of home consoles, rise of 3D gaming
Hollywood veteran Steven Spielberg expects to see the traditional home console die out, whilst virtual reality and 3D video games will make an emphatic comeback.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Spielberg boldly stated that he forecasts the conventional video game systems to go "the way of the Dodo bird," as well as declaring his preference for PC gaming.

"Now we're all playing at home and someday we'll be playing directly on our TV sets, bypassing all of the platforms," he said. "In the short term I would love to start seeing 3D games developed where with a good pair of glasses we get a real three-dimensional experience in front of an appropriate monitor that is designed just for 3D."

The director of Schindler's List and Jurassic Park has recently dabbled in video game production, with his Wii puzzle game Boom Blox being a surprise success both commercially and critically.

Spielberg's vision may seem like a lifetime away, but following the recent OnLive announcement it may become a reality sooner than we think.

I sort of agree with him, except that I would expect that as "stereoscopic" 3d gaming catches on, the console makers will adopt & incorporate the technology into their consoles. For better or for worse, as long as the "average" person is too "average" to build or buy a high end gaming pc, one-size-fits-all gaming consoles will remain the norm. But whether those consoles run games off a DVD, a blu-ray, or OnLive and whether they include sterescopic 3d technology is bound to evolve.

nvidia may say their 3d Vision will only be available on PCs, but nvidia doesn't have a patent on stereoscopic 3d, just their own particular version of it.

However, I totally agree that stereoscopic 3d gaming (and eventually virtual reality gaming) is inevitable, just like HiDef was inevitable 10 years ago and 5.1 surround was inevitable 10 years before that. One way or another 3d *IS* the next big thing, it's only a matter of time. :)

I can not imagine how OnLive can deliver 120 frames per second, it can not so it will not be true 120Hz experience but crippled stuff.
Now I have in most of games really 120fps (60fps) in each eye, it is now and working.

I think it's true! Inspite of some problems i think that gaming in general will help 3d become mainstream. And once other medias accepts 3d there will be no turning back!

I guess that not gaming but nasty pictures and movies will make this technology mainstream.

lol Well, it is true that the adult industry usually ushers in new media technology to the mainstream. ;) VHS & DVD never would have found their way into every home in America without it. In this case, though, I think we'll see gaming fully embrace 3d long before porn.

I was actually refering more to some newer hollywood movies: Coraline, Monstas vs aliens, Bolt 3d journey etc. I hope they can be gotten for 3d-users with 3d-vision or other stereosolutions but it maight take a while.

But of course: Nasty medias are probably quick to hookup as well.

Well we all know the internet is for pron... lol Since S3d movies aren't currently available for the 3d vision, it seems games will probably be making the bigger impact. All these nice 3d movies are going to be released in anaglyphic format. Talking to people at future shop and other places they haven't even heard of this. {Big sigh} I really hope they do a hd release of Coraline and the others, I would buy them all! Been a 3d junkie since my first 3d movie. I am currently trying to figure out how to make movies in s3d, looks like I need gear to do it though.

I use and old game called "The Movies, and have the Stunts and Effects action pack as well.} I mod for it as well.

I have put it on hold until I can record the s3d effects. That is why it's been awhile. I can play the game in s3d and watch the movies as the play in s3d, but cannot record them that way. Soon as I get the gear, I think it can be done. Here is one of my movies. {Not in S3d yet, but remake is ready to go soon as I figure it out.} Maybe fraps can figure out how to get the stereo effects recording.

You're right. lol
Great effort on the vid! It's funny!
You know: If you have a tv capture card you can use the iz3d driver and over/under option for a quite decent result. Check Blacksharks thread on the mtbs3d. He has a lot of good tips on how to capture gameplay stereovids. The result is more than decent too!
