Tridef thoughts from a 3d vision user
  1 / 3
Well I have been always a 3d vision user and never touched tridef, but Bioshock Infinite was enough reason to make the jump, so I gave it a try. I heard horror stories from Tridef about terrible performance, constant crashes and what else that made me stay away from it until now. I have an H5360 projector and the HMZ-T1 HMD from Sony. After learning that the HMZ-T1 fulfilled the requirements for Tridef (HDMI 1.4 connection and SBS), and downloaded the 14 day trial and gave it a try. 1- Installation: no issues, everything worked fine. First thing first, turn off 3d vision. First difference with 3d vision, you need to use Ignition, the ease of 3d vision activating with every game won't work, you need the Ignition app to make it work adding games there. This sometimes has problems to make Steam or Origin work, in my case Steam games apparently need to restart the whole Steam app sometimes, while Origin crashed once and I had to turn Origin interface in game off, from there no issues. My only gripe is that for whatever reason the next time I activated 3d vision it didn't work in games, only with photos and the 3d test (looks like a 3d tv play issue). A quick driver reinstall fixed that. 2- 3d effect: I'm a total tridef newbie so maybe it can be tweaked better, but it seems a bit lacking, though its still really good. Tridef has lots of config options but still I find it hard to get a good 3d effect sometimes. With 3d vision you can tweak depth and convergence until your eyes bleed, here you can max it for a really good effect, but you can't go any further. Also Power3d, the 2d to 3d converter, works surprisingly well, it's quite clear it's no real 3d but it's better than 2d+depth on Crysis for example, so it's welcomed when there's no other solution. 3- Support: Oh boy, to see developers interact with users in the forums, working hard to fix games, what a sight! They really suport their product, so at least you know they'll give it a try to make your games request to work. Besides many users provide profiles of their own. 4- Gaming: I've had a rather positive experience with Tridef. Most of the games I've tried worked fine, no random crashes, decent performance (for my sub optimal rig), and most importantly, I've got to play several games that didn't work well on 3d vision. The games I've tried: 1) Hitman Absolution: Only gave it a try for a few seconds at the very beginning, but it had no issues, with everything maxed at ultra, though performance was severely lacking, still it looked great, damn I need to upgrade my graphic card. 2) TC Ghost Recon Future Soldier: This game worked great with everything maxed and DX11 on, it looked stunning though performance was lacking so I toned it down. The biggest problem though is that it has 2d waypoint marker that makes it really annoying. 3) Battlefield 3: It works in real 3d! 3d vision gives a meh 3d effect, but here it had real depth, though it had some issues with lighting, it looked very much playable and performance was surprisingly good. Crosshair is at the wrong depth though so I'll look around so that hopefully I can turn it off. 4) Deus Ex: I've tried everything on 3d vision to make it work, used the 3d slider posted in the forums, still I didn't like the effect. Tridef had the same issues in real 3d, however to my surprise PowerVR gives a great 3d effect with no issues. I've played tons of 3d games and I know fake 3d, and this looked like real 3d though supposedly it's not, so I'll surely play this game all over again in this mode. 5) Shank: I was surprised to see a profile for this, 3d vision doesn't add 3d to this game, but Tridef does, it's a bit weird on 3d the way it manages 2d with depth, but well, it has some 3d which is good. 6) Deadlight: Another broken game on 3d vision that works surprisingly well in 3d. Depth and focus need to be adjusted a lot but when done properly it works really well with amazing depth. 7) Psychonauts: I tried this game with Helix mod but didn't like it. Sky was at the wrong depth and that made the game hardly playable for me. Tridef fixes the sky depth but gives a below average 3d effect, no amount of tweaking made it look any better, maybe I'm not pushing the right tridef buttons here. 8) Bioshock Infinite: It has light issues here and there, so it's not perfect in 3d but is playable thanks to DHR profile, I would say "good" in 3d vision terms. Still you lack perfect 3d, but you get some amazing graphics in exchange, all in all this game shines is 3d and it's so much better than 2d. 9) Risen 2. This game has shadow issues in 3d vision. I tried it with Tridef and it's perfect in 3d, at least in the beginning, BUT the health bar is in almost in the middle of the screen, really weird. 10) Syndicate: This game has a profile so it should work, but it didn't even start on Tridef for me. 11) FEAR 3: Another game that has Tridef profile but works badly in real 3d. However the fake Power3d gives a good sense of depth, I would say like 30% real 3d vision 3d, so it's playable in 3d. I will try to ask why this happens in Tridef forums, since many people mentioned FEAR 3 as a good 3d game in Tridef. 12) Sleeping Dogs: It's performance heavy but gives a really good 3d depth effect. The only thing is that the waypoint marker is in 2d. 13) FAR CRY 3: 3d worked great but it was almost a slowdown at 1080p. 14) Kane and Lynch 2: Crashed while using any kind of AA, without it 3d is good with no issues. I want to try now: Crysis 2, it has a profile and maybe it will give a Battelfield 3 trick and be in real 3d? Also Lord of the Rings Online, in 3d vision it's unplayable due to sky at wrong depth, apparently it works well with Tridef, we'll see. 5- Overall: Tridef is really good, for me it's well worth the $50 it costs so I'll pay for it when my trial is done. It gives hope for DX10/11 games to work in 3d against current 3d vision status and gets you to play several games otherwise you wouldn't, and the 2d to 3d converter, even though far from perfect, it's a nice addition for some games with too many issues, so all in all, recommended.

I've not yet tried it with anything but Bioshock Infinite, but I've had a similarly positive experience and will also be purchasing after the trial.

Good to know there's a functional alternative out there. Shame there is no way of hacking it to work with a certified monitor though :( I heard the page flipping function or whatever it is on these monitors purposely doesn't work with an amd card in this fashion either.

Nice thread! Tridef its an alternative to 3Dvision/3DTV play.....if you're a 3D addict (like me and many others in this forum), its a must to have both softwares and others that come in the future (that works well of course).....if you still can play in 2D (i dont), stick with 3D vision. @birthright, the number 1....its not necessary to re-install drivers....you have to change one value in the registry (0 to 1). number 3: 100% agree.....Tridef staff are always trying to make games works in 3D...and if they cant, they WROTE in the forum "We cant...." i always appreciate sincerity...thats simple amazing. Yesterday i make Hitman Absolution to work in 3D...finally!!.....3D its great! but i still have some shadows/lights issues... i'm using the profile from last official Ignition (not using any beta).

lumpeh, it works with my Asus VG278H - though I got lucky and have one with newer firmware. Most people can't do it.

Yah, it's too bad that iz3D is no longer supported. I used their trial and it worked very well back when I tried it. A 3rd option would be nice, so at least we could have 3 strikes before were out of luck.

If it supports SBS 3d over HDMI, yes. Plug it in via hdmi, look in the image settings. Free trial, can't hurt to try.

Since the VG236H uses an external emitter, you have to run 3D Vision at the same time to enable your glasses. Huge performance hit. Use your 3D HDTV.

Ah yeah, you may not have much luck with an external emitter. Can't hurt to give it a go though.

Ok thanks. Don't really have a need for it for any games I'm currently playing, but just curious in case sometime I do.

Go into the tridef control panel, and set it to side by side mode. Then once the game is running, select side by side mode on your monitor (hopefully an option in the monitor settings) If your monitor does not support side by side mode, I'm afraid it won't work.

Yes, the DLP projectors only support frame-sequential 3D, not side-by-side. To get side-by-side, you can use an external converter box like: http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-3D-XL-Converter-Video-Gaming/dp/B0047ZH3CW/ref=reg_hu-rd_add_1_dp Not sure how well that works, haven't tried it myself.
