His "3D Theater" concept is very good, very practical - good solution for minimizing motion sickness. I hope NVIDIA can incorporate this - they should have enough money this year (their stock price has more than doubled this year, thanks to PASCAL and deep-learning/self driving tech)...

No prob. Its so weird that i don't think i've ever heard someone express passion for 3D like this guy, not verbally. Like Neil Shnieder comes close but hes very reserved in his view. Agree, great video and this guy has a new subscriber for sure.

Isn't this Conan from the forum here? Whoever it is, he's pretty funny. And I agree with his assessment. I think the "3D Theater" idea is a good one.

I see you guys always complain about the blurriness on the edges. I already told you, if you support the 3D that pops in, instead of pops out, you wouldn't have that problem. It's caused by an object that is 3D that's supposed to appear to pop out and if it gets cut off by the edge of the screen, it hurts to look at it. Instead of expecting the image to pop out of the tv, you should set your settings to make sure it just pops out at screen level so that that problem wont happen and instead make the 3D image pop in instead. This has been a problem for every 3D thing, even 3D vision. Pop in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3lDoVwEmts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1StCGhmjvI Pop out: everything else. The only driver i've seen that lets you do the pop in effect is tridef. See how in the pop in 3D vids that the effect doesnt try to leave out of the screen? Thats the thing that will fix the eye straining edges.

Hey, isn't this sort of the thing the video blogger was suggesting? http://www.tomshardware.com/news/xbox-one-streaming-oculus-rift,33079.html I get that it's Xbox One and not 3D Vision, but the principle is the same - allow a user to play non-VR games with their headset.

Microsoft streaming makes NO mention of 3D rendering for Rift, however (probably just flat, undesirable 2D), so it is not the same...

I was talking about it being the same in principle: Streaming a non-VR game to a VR headset. It looks like you would enter a virtual "Theater room" that IS in stereo 3D, but the "movie screen" would be in 2D - much like going to the theater in real life. Seriously, it can't be THAT hard for NVidia to do the same thing with 3D Vision games... just eliminate the head tracking and make it a "theater mode," which would actually serve a purpose rather than this dumb thing Microsoft is doing with 2D streaming.

There are already at least four different ways to do a virtual screen/theater mode with VR. There are already multiple apps that will take a SBS display and make it 3D. Offhand, I know of Virtual Desktop, Big Screen, Steam Theater mode, and VorpX. There are surely other theater/movie apps that also do SBS. If you setup your game to output SBS, like GTA5, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, or Trine support directly, you can then play the game in 3D, in the virtual theater. Same idea holds true for SBS generated from DX11 games with 3Dmigoto. I've tried this a couple of times, and while it works, in my opinion it's still a weak experience. If you had nothing else to run 3D upon, it's possibly worth using, but if you have any 3D hardware (TV, projector, monitor), that experience will be far superior. The problem is the resolution. You get a worst of both worlds problem where in order to make it not look like crap, you need to up the resolution using super-sampling, which is then downsampled to the low resolution display you are seeing. Visually, I put this about a 1024x768 quality screen, and that's assuming you are using supersampling. So you need to have a monster computer to make it look barely adequate. This is like some of the other gimmicks in the market today, like streaming from a Shield device, or streaming from your Xbox, or PSNow. It works, but your bar for quality needs to be lowered. Everyone is different, so maybe this is acceptable for the novelty or no need of other hardware, or maybe the large screen for non-projector users giving a sense of scale. For some people, maybe the sense of scale is worth the trade-off for lower quality.

bo3b has also pointed out another huge spanner in the works in the past, and touches upon it in his above post. Basically, VR requires a monster system to run already, and you need to run at 90fps on top of that as opposed to 60fps in 3D Vision. Also, 3D Vision is more accepting of a drop in FPS and stutter - VR is not. This is why most VR games look like they have 'PS2 graphics' but still struggle to keep 90fps in VR. Unfortunately, playing AAA games such as The Witcher 3, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, et al; at 90fps in VR, especially as VR has chosen to lock out SLi, becomes an impossibility. Even today, VorpX allows the cinema screen Stereo3D experience with a lot of games, but the experience is sub-par. I have played through Half Life 2 and its expansions as well as Portal 2 in this mode. It was a novel experience but I was not very impressed in the end, even though head tracking worked well.

What is the difference in terms of 3D image quality from a Rift to one of those Sony HMZ-T2 Personal 3D Viewer? I remember quite a few people were using those to play 3D games. I guess for people that dont have a 3D monitor/TV/Projector it would be a good way to introduce 3D via a VR headset, this would benefit everybody. We would have more games with 3D support and a bigger community to support 3D gaming as VR matures with more and more users. I don't see why nvidia doesn't do this! They already have 3D Vision drivers, that is really not much they need to do. It is unbelievable how useless Nvidia can be sometimes. In cinema mode the FPS wouldn't need to be as high as 90, games would be playable with low fps like in a 3D tv/monitor.
