Avatar: running smooth and beautiful! The fix guide :)
  1 / 2
Hi folks,

I have been fighting to get Avatar running smooth and beautiful for quite some time now (look at my various posts). Well, what shall I say, I found the solution (at least on my config). And the result: breathtaking. All details ultra or high, betweeen 25 and 50 fps (measured with FRAPS, before changes I had half of this). System: core i7 920 @ 3,5, gtx 285, 6 GB, vsita 64bit.

Here we go (if all steps are really neccesaary I don't know), all changes on your own risk, of course (Slightly EDITED)

1) Get and install 1.17 and complementary gfx driver (best download: uk/gbr site, regular, full cd)
2) Choose "Hide stereoscopic effects when game starts" under nvidia 3d vision menu (new EDIT)
3) Start Avatar
4) Under ingame options choose: directx9 and chose 3dvision as method (EDIT: chose enanble 3d ingame later on, see step 13)
5) Exit Avatar
6) Rename Avatardemo.exe to avatar.exe (it is found under /bin in your install folder)
7) Locate gamerprofile.xml (under user/"yourusername"/documents/mygames/avatardemo)
8) Open gamerprofile.xml with editor (right click - open with)
9) Change "maximized=0" to "maximized=1"
10) Change "Platform=d3d9" to "Platform=d3d10"
11) Save and close gamerprofile.xml (EDIT: best to change it's properties to "write protected" after you got your setup figured out; in my case it reset to dx9 otherwise)
12) Start Avatar
13) Activate 3d by the ingame menu point only for the first time (not by receiver or strg+t)
14) Enjoy!

Note: If you alt+tab out of game, the game will stay windowed with no 3d, so dont do :). To see your frames start fraps before you enter the game.

One more: In order to get good convergence on a 22" screen choose the following: distance to screen 2 (feet) and screen size 40 (should be inches, but well: perhaps they mixed inches and metric system when it comes to screen size. 22 was way to close for me). That's what works best for me.

If you know one of those elusive nvidia guys you might give em a hint, nutch nutch.

Have fun, all feedback welcome!

I think that game setup is done not well.
Stereo setup is confusing and not deterministic.

Setup has influence on speed, stereo quality (stereo done purely by nvidia driver produces incompatible ghosting bloom, whereas correct setup produces good bloom) and stability (demo is crashing - e.g. sometimes checkboarded pattern instead of nvidia 3d vision appears in setup automatically).

If game is setup correctly it is relatively fast and stereo product is 100% with minimum not perceivable ghosting.

Ubisoft should allocate extra testers for this to de bug it.
And if possible optimise performance in stereo. In the jungle I have only cca 30 fps (where in normal mode I have 100fps).

The setup process is really not intuitive at all. There are different bugs at work simultaneously.

Nonetheless, the 70% reduction you see from 2d (100 FPS) to 3d (30FPS) was exactly my problem before those tweaks listed above. Now I am to about 50% reduction which correlates with the reduction in other games. Did you try the setings above (short version: dx10 and maximise to 1 via gameprofile.xml change)?

I already have configured it so it is running properly.
Problem is that if I configure it properly multi gpu is not scaling (or working at all) so with my GTX295 it is running like 275.

If I configure it that multi-gpu is working (renaming exe - not avatar.exe) I have 30 - 60 fps, running very smoothly but stereo effect is calculated improperly so scene is full of ghosting.
These technical issues suck enormously.

It seems that SLI issue is only in stereo, in normal mode SLI is working (so the permormance penalty in stereo is enormous with proper stereo configuration).

PS:
By default binary is AvatarDemo.exe producing incorrect stereo effect (fortunatelly I have played demo with avatar.exe) -> verdict for the demo is technical fail.

It was running fine for me just by renaming as I stated in the other thread. I'll wait for the final game before I upgrade my drivers again.

With the older drivers I was able at least make sli work (really fast stereo, but incorrect stereo).

I downloaded the new drivers today and tried and multi gpu is not working in any configuration. Opposite, in stereo game is faster when multi gpu is deactivated in control panel by 7 fps which is a lot.

If it eventually happens that multi gpu is working in stereo this game will have ~ 50 - 60 stable fps with GTX295 in stereo.

Renmaing alone did not help me, but perhaps you were already runnig in dx10 and that combination (dx10 + renaming) does the trick.

I don't have SLI - but I imagine it sucks when you can only use half your graphics power.

Set all that aside: I just finsihed the demo and wow! I am really looking forward to the full game, that was very intense world exploration and combat. Full of graphical wonders and a really large level without reload. It 's just plain fun to fire rounds in full 3d and watch guns blazing alround you and the air fill with debris and chunks. Very good creature design, too. Impressing waterfalls, the water with the little fish and surface change when firing into it, 3d water fountains pop-out effects, night glow, largce scale battles, vehicles, xp system... very promising.

I tried all permutations of settings including your trick, but sli is not working.
So I was playing it like with GTX260 (because sli is slower than single) and it was still playable.

Game is very good, I would say 3D Vision Ready adept game, because all effects are stereo compatible if setup is done correctly.
And what is also nice is that ghosting is minimised.

In my case it is crashing only in dx9 with ultra settings, game probably wanna use dx10 features in dx9. Are you using dx10?

I can't select DX10. But game is running flawlessy in DX9, everything maximized, AA2x and in game 3d enabled. My fps average were between 25 and 35fps and gameplay was very smooth, no lags at all and sometimes I would get 40 or 50fps. Game has absolutely no ghosts and I played with 70% depth and never seen pop out effects like that in my life. It's freaking amazing, woooooooooowwwwwwwww, awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game reminds Crysis a lot in terms of graphics beauty and details, the water, fishes, the plants, everything is alive and moves, so much beauty it's hard to believe what you see. When you drive the car it's like I'm really inside the forest. This game is really the way 3D Vision is meant to be seen, played and enjoyed. Gorgeous, beautiful and a perfect 3D experience.

I'm glad these WHQL drivers are working very well for the game unlike the 1.16 that was causing CTD all the time.

Can't hardly wait for the Avatar full game.

Yes, it's really a class of its own. The 3d is just groundbreaking. So, I am too really excited for the full version.

I couldn't select dx10 either in ingame menu. It worked then via change of gamerprofile.xml (look above). But if the game runs that good for you there is probably no need to switch this.

I was able to run it in DX9 with Ultra settings and in DX9 sli is working in stereo.
I measured it with fraps and in the jungle it is fluctuating around 30 fps. What is your fps exactly?

So, when I start a new game I have 37 frames in the very first picture with the helicopter. That is with ultra config, except shadows (high), terrain (high) and geometry (high). In jungle with these settings my fps fluctuate around 25 FPS. When fighting the first plant I have 24 fps when looking towards the junge for example. In Dx9 I have round about10 FPS less cause the programm tries to use two different 3d modes simutaneously.

After reading these forums, and messing around for bit I finally got this demo working.

It would load fine but once I tried to start a game it would crash.

I renamed the .exe to Avatar and changed the settings to dx10, everything maxed, it crashed.. but
when I loaded the game back up the settings had stuck, and lo and behold after 3 or 4 days
of troubleshooting I was finally in game.

I don't know the frames I was getting but the game is completely playable now.
I didn't notice I single issue with the framrate I'd guess it was running between 20 and 40fps.

Anyway, no thanks to Nvidia for their shoddy driver, but thanks to the other users who take the
time to figure this stuff out and post it here for the rest of us.
