Is there a future for 3D Vision? (the hardware version)

I think the Occulus will breathe new life into 3D, but for now to most people 3D = movie 3D = 3D conversion = meh. I find it funny people think the Occulus will breath new life into 3d when a big reason people don't like it is the glasses, so sure lets put this hulking thing on my head instead...

Still hard to find new projectors, and old parts for my H5360 are a little pricey. This is not as academic to me now as when this thread was started, because I got my first stuck pixel on my beloved H5360. It's really freakin' annoying. That may or may not be the beginning of the end for this DLP chip, I know that some of these chips were not properly sealed, and you start to get 100s. As a backup, I bought a busted H5360 off eBay with a new DLP chip and new color wheel, so between the pieces I can probably keep this working. But... ran across an interesting projector I thought I'd throw out there and see if anyone has tried it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009634&cm_re=h5380bd-_-24-009-634-_-Product This is the H5380BD from Acer, and the reason this is interesting is because it appears to support frame-sequential at 120Hz, and thus the pyramid and nvidia glasses. Unless I'm misreading the manual, or it's just mistakes, they support both 3D Vision and 3D TV Play. Interesting QuickStart: http://mans.io/files/viewer/78805/4 And, it's in stock and a current projector. If anybody has or tries this projector, please let us know.

The H5380BD will be supported via 3DTV Play, "plug and play wise". Which means that a person would have to purchase 3DTV Play or use an emitter to activate 3DTV play for free. The bad thing then, is that Nvidia's glasses do not function, because Nvidia's emitter only acts as a product key and is turned off when when used with 3DTV Play. On these type of projectors, if you have an Nvidia emitter and glases, it's better override the EDID "so that it is seen as a 3D Vision Certified Display", allowing the emitter and glasses to be used. But the Projector's firmware must support it, it's not always a given. For example, some of LG's LED Projectors typically will not accept a 1280x720@120Hz input, the firmware blocks it for whatever reason, while other models will not. It gives you an "Out of range error", even though it's capable of supporting it hardware wise, the firmware blocks it. So far(AFAIK) a few of the LGs are the only ones that do this. I have a LG PB60G (was $300 on sale) with an override that works great, fans a little loud though. A nice thing with that H5360BD is that it has MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) support and HDMI 1.4 support, giving you a lot of hardware sources for input options vs that of a HDMI 1.3 H5360. For movies, I use an Acer H6510BD (1080P) with DLP Link glasses.

Pretty sure that this H5380BD would work with an EDID override. The menu setup is identical to my H5360, just a slightly different look. It actually has a 3D Vision option in the menu, which I've never understood on the H5360, as I never needed it, and turning it on makes it miscommunicate. If the default mode is DLP however, this might make more sense to put it into 3D Vision mode, and be able to use 3D Vision glasses directly. Not fully clear, but there is menu choice for "3D Vision", and as you know 3D TV Play is just DLP mode as far as the projector is concerned. On sale today only- $300: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-H5380BD-720p-Theater-Projector/dp/B00I0VRE6E/

The 3D Vision option is to turn off the DLP Link flash, which can wash out the image if not using DLP Link glasses.
No. Not for the vast majority. 3D mode basically forces a lot of processing that's usually mandatory. A lot of 3D HDTV's are an absolute horror show in the input lag department (although it obviously varies from set to set and people have various tolerance levels). Projector Central, for example, lists the input lag of this at 32ms (in all modes). For 299.99, I'm actually quite tempted by this. I'm going to seriously think this one over for a bit. I'm curious about 3D on a large screen and HDTVs are basically useless since I'm so sensitive to input lag. If I thought Nvidia would allow 3D Vision to work on a virtual theater screen with the Oculus CV1 or HTC Vive, I'd just wait it out and be content with that. But with 3D Vision being dead, I seriously doubt that'll be a supported option.

@SnickerSnack Depending of the brand and model of the 3DTV you can found more o less input lag. Also in the TV options you have to label the HDMI input to PC. I have a LG 3DTV and there is no input lag (no differences between 2D and 3D). I also test a few new LG models and there is also no input lag. Also if you try to play 1080p/24hz you will 100% see a massive input lag, but it's because of the 24hz limit.

Consult your owner's manual, some displays have a game mode that you must select instead of renaming the input. And yah, 24hz mode blows. One of the reasons that I bought TriDef and a Radeon GPU as an alternative 3D gaming setup a few years back. You'd think by now, that they would have removed this shitty limitation.

SnickerSnack - 3DTV Play, when using 1080p mode, unnecessarily forces PC Desktop to use 24 fps rate. This unnecessary constraint adds about 17 msec control lag that does not exist when using TriDef's Ignition (same 1080p24 mode) or the LG 4K EDID mod. With this 3DTV Play lag, I found some games like Shadow of Mordor to be unplayable; however, the same 4K display was playable with the 4K EDID mod. Note that 3DTV Play's 720p mode does not have this extra lag, since it operates at 60 fps. For more discussion, see https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/809649/3d-vision/please-add-hdmi-2-0-support-to-3dtv-play-/post/4487474/#4487474.

I am much more worried the new generations of Geforce cards won't support 3D Vision, and we will be stuck with limited power to run newer games. You can always find old used monitors on Ebay.

Was looking pretty grim for the last year, but this latest driver is a real change.
The 3D Vision option is to turn off the DLP Link flash, which can wash out the image if not using DLP Link glasses.
Well, I looked carefully and I think this is the same as the H5360 internally, so I ponied up. I had literally put in a camelcamelcamel price watch at $365 2 hours before- and bing up pops the $300 sale. Sometimes I have to listen to the universe. I'll report back. If it blows I'll send it back.

Well, so far so good on the software front. 980ti with the latest driver actually works pretty well from what I can tell, even on Win10. Was looking pretty grim for the last year, but this latest driver is a real change.

Got this projector and hooked it up. The short story is that it works just fine, for either 3D Vision, or 3D TV Play. The answer to the question about the manual is that things are even more lame now than they were. The manual has not been updated for the new projector, which is why it's confusing. The on screen UI looks completely different, and is not documented at all. Gotta love that no one even bothers to have it make sense nowadays. It only works as 3D TV Play out of the box, it's not a certified projector. You can't get into the menus to switch it, even though the manual says you should be able to, they are greyed out. 3D TV Play for both HDMI and VGA connections works. If I set an EDID override for an H5360 projector, it goes back to working normally as 3D Vision, using 3D Vision glasses. No visual difference between this H5380BD and an older H5360, although this one is brighter because the bulb is newer. 120Hz works like you'd expect, and does not dim as much, or get slightly blurry like the H5360. So... the answer to the thread is that, yes, there is a future for even the hardware. It's not labeled properly, but this projector is on the shelves today, brand new, and works exactly like an H5360. So, we are fine on the projector front for at least a few more years.
