What I am interested and I can't really find (maybe my google skills sux :)) ) is a comparison between 3D Vision and Ocullus in terms of development.
I would like to know what are the diffs and what are the same things and I am talking especially about rendering not hardware integration into an app.
If anyone has any info, please do share it:)
Thank you in advance!

I converted a 3d vision clip of Far Cry 3 to oculus rift format [distortion/ eye swap] as a test and people with kit says it look great. If your asking if 3d vision could be on rift, tbh I guess that would fall into nvidia's hands.

I think that it depends on the game, rift would be great for fpp games like doom etc, but how would it be to play trine/tomb raider/etc. basically every other game that does not have first person perspective? What about other 3d usage? movies? headtracking doesn't really add anything there unless the porn industry step up and make use of the VR capabilities of oculus.
I would be interesting to try it out once there is software support and I like the 3d buzz thats been building behind rift, I would not like to see 3d vision vs oculus but rather want both technologies work together to promote the stereoscopic 3d technology in general.

Well if it becomes the "big thing". It would be nice as a monitor alternative and perhaps it will convince others to invest in a real display for non OR games. I really think that every hardcore 3D gamer is going to want both Oculus Rift/ 3d vision[or tridef/both]. Now not sure if OR is for everyone but will see. People are thinking its one or the other which may screw everyone over.
People think I am anti-rift or whatever but I havent tried and neither have the 99.9% people singing praises. In a world of make believe lets pretend every game has support. Like who know's I may fall in love with it for First person games, its a possibility. But non-first person? Thats a joke question. Its just a weird ratio monitor with distortion, headtracking you dont need, certain to have fov issues, and half resolution. FOV issues/work arounds are worth it for surround users... they get 3x res... not 1/2 res. Like I mod and add support to games for 3D vision, right? Why would I/anyone/developer bother with a non first person game.
No doubt in my mind people that are gonna get a rude awakening if they think they better off without 3D vision when OR comes out. Just from non first person games[even if it somehow has 100% support]. I not only agree that headtracking shouldnt be in every game but I actually say Headtracking/tilt actually deteriorate ANY non-first person game. Your like a real annoying camera man, I watched cymatic bruce[who I think knows nothing about 3D] play ME3 on Vorpx. It was just noxious, not to mention I really dont think you are gonna get any sense of depth out of a third person game with depthbuffer[its less then tridef to minimize blurring].
But with everyone saying abandon ship, we may get stuck. Like someone honestly said on 3Dvision-blog that he got it and told a surround user that OR DEV KIT replaces 3D surround system. Which just makes me shake my head since there is maybe 3 games fully playable on it right now with an 1280x800 screen 1/2 size. Im not sure if people convinced themselves or what but there is no way they are playing titles like Witcher/ Batman / etc on it. Maybe that depth buffer solution that guy is working on but seriously? You want to play on bad res/depth buffer? Depth buffers pro's may outweigh cons in first person with rift against 3d vision, depending on user. But in non-first person its night + day, Im not even sure it will win against 2D. Will have to see on that.
Id really like to see a fusion of idea, I am very unhappy with the direction OR is going. Its going in the direction of the Wii. In everyones homes except everyones home can't render S3D gaming. It needs a more hardcore gamer direction at least as an option which imo means NVIDIA/AMD preferably including 3D Vision. Otherwise people are really in for some low end 3D gaming. People honestly think developers of high end graphical games are dying to spend weeks in implementing Rift in a market where this next game can be there last. Crysis 2/3 form of 3D is honestly the best solution for a developer supporting rift. Time efficient, no errors, all users. Thats the only realistic way I see big developers adding support to HD games without nvidia/amd.

I've got an OR devkit. I'm also a 3Dvision user since 5 years. And I think that the future of gaming IS the Rift. Stereo 3D was a (great) step between 2D flat gaming and VR gaming. But now that VR is here, and after putting the Rift on my head, I can say honestly that 3D vision will disappear by itself as soon as game devs will support natively VR devices, and as soon as the device will become more efficient (Hight rez, head tracking,...). It is just a matter of time, 2 or 3 years.
Everyone in the gaming industry who have tried the Rift became a VR enthousiast, and every big (and not so big) studios already have a devkit. Some great game engines already support the Rift natively (Frostbite from EA, Unreal 4 from Epic,...) and that's just the beginning. It is the start of something big, and I don't remember it was the same when 3DVision first appeared a few years ago...
Now there's a true convergence between developpers and customers expectations, and it's called VR. All the people who have tried my devkit (gamers and non gamers) were blown away by simple demos coded in a few days...Just imagine what it will be when a AAA VR game will be available on a customer Rift.
And no, a Rift is not only dedicated to FPS games. Of course that's the easier way to play in a VR but I'm pretty sure we could play every kind of games in an HMD (there's already a SNES emulator or an IMAX simulator.). Strategy games or 3rd person game have to be adapted to this device, an actually it could (will!) be great experiences as long as these games will be made with VR in mind (that's why I'm agree with Palmer, and I don't believe in drivers like VorpX or Vireio).

I'm really interested in the OR and I think that in a best case scenario, it will be mind-blowing, but mostly for first person games.
VR is immersion, it means being there. I think that most non-first person games will play better with 3d vision, since it has clear advantages in non-immersive games: you're not wearing a sizeable helmet for hours, external perception of your room, games that require lots of key combinations which you are blind to wont work well, better resolution, and so on.
So probably I'll keep using 3d vision for things like 3rd person games, strategy games, mmorpgs which require many hours for leveling and senseless grinding, 2.5d games ala Trine, and so on. In the end, both technologies can coexist just fine.
Once the VR dust settles, we'll probably rediscover 3d vision as a better option for many games, while VR will have its share of great experiences of its own.
However, what will make OR sell like hotcakes is if it really works with the adult industry, that will make it sell by millions.

Wait!
I was under the impression that 3D Vision also uses "side by side" when you are using a DL-DVI link and a monitor. The Frame packed format was used according to the HDMI 1.4 standard when you are using an external device like a TV.
Is this wrong? Is 3D Vision using the frame packed method all the time??

Imax simulator is a gimmick idea, all your doing is taking image and stretching it then reducing resolution via rift and giving head swivel. Same for snes emulator. Its to give the impression your in a room watching it..... when you can be a room watching it. There is no added value from actually playing on TV except reduced resolution and inconvience of Rift.
"..be great experiences as long as these games will be made with VR in mind"
VR in mind is Virtual Realitity. So if they were to keep it in mind, as far as Id imagine they couldnt be non- first person. Id really love to hear an explanation how you think strategy / third person games will be implemented. As far as I'm concerned its you pretending your the world's worst camera man.
Like I accept you believe that third person games + oculus rift is going to happen. Sell me on the idea. Pretend I'm your investor and your going to ask me for $10,000 for support of oculus rift in your game which is either third person / stategy /rts. Now I the investor mention the cost [$10,000], time, half resolution. Now tell me how your going to make it worth me investing.

Maybe if they filmed it matrix style probably[lots of camera's].
Though I think "cg" is easier. Though creepier.

I say send dev kits to brazzers/etc. instead of EA, would make the device sell better, not sure if its possibnle to shoot movie with head-tracking ability though.
I really dont like the whole VS idea like one should replace another but I'm afraid this is what might happen since as of right now it looks like the current 3d games can't be played on the rift, obviously rift games with head-tracking would not be playable on 3dvision setup.
I dont see myself playing bf4 multiplayer with VR, I would probably broke my neck, lets go ahead and make it kinect only game so you have to run, crouch, jump etc and suddenly everybody wouyld be too tired to do anything before half of the round (lets play some CPMA with it :D). Would most likely be great for single player.

I'd love an Imax simulator, but maybe not with the limited horizontal fov of the dev kit, something i personally believed was much wider in the beginning. I think it could be great, with the right content and a better fov and much higher resolution. There a lot more requirement actually, like a lack of screen door effect (high pixel fill factor, like samsung tvs)but get those right and you've got yourself you own IMAX theater you can lie on the couch and view. I wonder if the lens's focusing on infinity might play positive roll supplying an expansive feel to the imagery.

-'You want to take a first-person view and lock it into a small rectangular screen that sits 60cm away from you?'
-'But you'll have to keep your head completely motionless the entire time! Even when your head is pretending to swivel on the screen!' It will feel too counter-intuitive!'
-How can you expect people to simulate their neck movements by using a hand-controlled mouse?'
-'How can you have a gameworld move 360 degrees while being locked into the exact same spot on the monitor in front of you?' That's a paradox! It'd be disconcerting, and it wouldn't work.
If we got used to controlling someone else's head movements using our mouse in FPS games, or controlling a bird's-eye-view camera with our left hand in RTS games, then we can get used to whatever control schemes VR throws at us.
don't underestimate your ability to get used to nonsensical control schemes that only vaguely resemble reality. You've been doing it your whole life, and it's turned out just fine.

Wait for you own Devkit, and take the time to get use to it (and keep it mind it is only a low rez with missing features sample). A Rift is not only a "head replacer" for FPS, you're wrong. Like a monitor, it is an open window to "another place", just like in a 3Dvision game. But, unlike a monitor, this window has no limit, no borders: you can look upside, downside, or even behind the scene. You're no more a simple spectator, you're now inside this place.
No matter if you play a FPS or a 3rd person game: it's not because you're behind your character that it's not "VR". Of course you can look at your character, but you can also look everywhere else: actually you will "follow" him in his world instead of just looking at him through a window.
Also, imagine a RTS where you could fly over the battlefield like a god, look at the horizon, on the sides, and everywhere around you. Why wanting to keep the limit of a monitor? Is it so hard to forget your old habits?
Let's hope talentuous developpers will show people the full potential of a VR device, and bring us to the next step.

This thread makes absolutely no sense. There is no such thing as Rift vs 3d Vision, unless nvidia is deliberately not going to support the Rift.
Tridef already supports it.
http://3dvision-blog.com/8955-the-tridef-3d-software-now-with-experimental-oculus-rift-support/
Rift support should be a basic patch in, and if nvidia won't officially support it I'm sure someone could hack support into it. There's already hacks for unsupported passive 3d, so an oculus hack is just a matter of time. Nvidia should just do the right thing and support it, or make their own with gsync. The rift is nothing more than a new 3d monitor. Tracking is optional.
Side issue: What's with the 3d glasses kit shortage? People are saying 3d is being dropped, which I doubt, but it is suspicious.

I would like to know what are the diffs and what are the same things and I am talking especially about rendering not hardware integration into an app.
If anyone has any info, please do share it:)
Thank you in advance!

3D vision - FSBS - Frame packed
Oculus rift - HSBS - Side by side
I converted a 3d vision clip of Far Cry 3 to oculus rift format [distortion/ eye swap] as a test and people with kit says it look great. If your asking if 3d vision could be on rift, tbh I guess that would fall into nvidia's hands.

I would be interesting to try it out once there is software support and I like the 3d buzz thats been building behind rift, I would not like to see 3d vision vs oculus but rather want both technologies work together to promote the stereoscopic 3d technology in general.

Frampacked as FSBS - Full side by side
If I had to sum it up just opposite eyes / OR is half horizontal resolution.

@tehace
Maybe if they filmed it matrix style probably[lots of camera's].
Though I think "cg" is easier. Though creepier.

Tridef already supports it.
