Customer support never knows more than the customer lol. Why should that ever change? There are only simple not qualified low wage workers on the phone. You would have to ask the developers / engineers behind the projector but you would never get them to the phone.
Reviews are useless in my opinion. Just order it from Amazon... or other big seller where you can return it. In Germany you have the right to return a device within 2 weeks after buying from any online shop.

For me getting a projector has been very tempting for years, but as they have missed 1080p/120hz 3D support, I have delayed purchase. As now UHD 40 has this support, I decided to give it a try. For now, almost everything is working as should, 3D works and movies look great, but I don't like the smell. Projector outputs quite strong smell of heated plastics, especially when running on normal lamp mode. Whole living room gets this intoxigating odor. When in eco mode, behind the projector, one can hardly notice it.
I got a new replacement UHD 40 from Amazon to replace it, but it has the same smell of heated plastics. Do you guys have had the same sort of smell? And if so, does it go away with time and use? My first unit has only about 8 hours of usage.

I cannot remember that I ever smelled that. My projector is installed at the ceiling and lamp is running on dynamic mode. Maybe the smell goes away after 50 hours of usage or so. I would just try if the smell goes away after a longer term. Amazon.de allows to send back articles 4 weeks after buying.

I've never heard of this before either. Are you sure it's not the screen? You didn't say what screen you are using, but the electric roller screens are normally vinyl based and they do smell quite strong when new.

I got this burned plastics smell with my benq w1070. It was the lamp power cable inside the projector that touched the metal frame.
But you would have to be very unlucky to have such a problem with a replacement projector too.

FWIW my UHD50 had a similar smell of heated plastics when I first got it (it was a refurbished unit). I attributed it to residues from the manufacturing process that are degassing or burn off as the lamp heats up. I stopped noticing the smell after a day or two of use.

But Optoma doesn't have a good quality assurance if they have this at all - my first UHD 40 had issues with extreme loud buzzing after 5 hours of usage. I returned it a few months ago and the new one has no issues any more even after 250 lamp hours. But non-existant quality assurance is normal these days - also Benq doesn't care for QA. They shipped BenQ W1700 with a firmware which did not work in 3D (eye swapping every 30 seconds).If projector manufacturers had a quality assurance such a bug would have been detected after 2 minutes of testing! Really not hard to find! Switch on 3D - look through glasses - faulty! Ok maybe only 30 seconds of testing :)

The reason for this lies in the Nvidia driver which assumes that you play on a 17 inch CRT monitor in Generic CRT mode. So in other words the 3D depth is optimized for a very small display and this results in a 3D depth which is far too high. We can fix this by telling the driver that we actually play on a 100 inch (or taller) sized projector screen.
Please follow these steps to correct 3D depth:

When starting a game via 3D Fix Manager now you will notice that 3D depth doesn't hurt your eyes any more and is similar to your 3D Vision monitor (if you have one). If you are also playing on a monitor or TV you should repeat the steps described above accordingly for the monitor and TV profile. When not doing this 3D depth will be wrong for those devices.
[u]Fixing washed out colors / image:[/u]
When using the projector with your PC the image looks a bit washed out and black levels are not so good. There is a simple reason for this: By default the Nvidia driver does not use the full color range of your projector! It only utilizes RGB color range 16-255 instead of 0-255. To correct this please do the following:

[u]How to use Nvidia DSR for 3D mode:[/u]
DSR is the acronym for [b][color="orange"]D[/color][/b]ynamic [b][color="orange"]S[/color][/b]uper [b][color="orange"]R[/color][/b]esolution. What it does is rendering the game internally in a higher resolution and scaling it down to the native resolution of the display. As a result we get a similar effect like Anti Aliasing but DSR is improving the whole picture quality while Anti Aliasing is only smoothing polygon edges. DSR is especially useful for games where no Anti Aliasing or just simple post processing mechanisms like FXAA is available.
The problem with DSR is that it always scales down the image to the native resolution of the display. Nvidia does not allow us to set an individual target resolution. For Optoma UHD 40 / 50 the native resolution is 3840 x 2160 but we need to downscale the image to 1920 x 1080 because higher resolutions do not support 120hz refresh rate which is required for 3D mode!
To force the driver to downscale to 1920x1080 we have to apply an EDID override. An EDID contains all information about the display like the supported resolutions, refresh rates, manufacturer and so on. I've prepared a modified EDID where all 4k resolutions have been removed - by installing this EDID we can trick the Nvidia driver to think that we use a native full hd projector. DSR will downsample to 1920x1080 then.
Now you might think by applying the EDID override you are downgrading your expensive 4K projector to a simple Full HD projector because all native 4k resolutions are gone. You are not completely wrong with your assumption! But remember that you have 2 HDMI ports on the projector. The EDID override only applies to one of them. If you connect the projector with 2 HDMI cables to your PC you can still use 4K resolutions by simply changing input signal to the other HDMI port where we still use the original EDID! Problem solved! Of course you can uninstall the EDID override anytime - nothing on the projector is changed. Only in Windows!
Please follow these steps to apply the EDID override for using DSR:

Compared to a Lightboost monitor brightness is a bit lower (maybe 30% lower on a white 1.0 gain screen). It really depends on the screen which is used. I think with a 1.5 gain screen or higher brightness can reach the level of a lightboost monitor. It's pretty hard to compare because you can increase brightness on a monitor very strongly but then you have ghosting all over the place. If you want 0 ghosting you would have to make your monitor darker than the projector in some cases. But overall I would say the projector is less bright than a monitor in stereo 3D mode.
I have a 90 inch white diffuse 1.2 gain screen which boosts brightness a bit and in my opinion brightness is pretty good. I can play dark games like Dead Space 2 and Outlast without any issues. You should use "Dynamic Black" mode for significantly increasing brightness in 3D mode. But as said before I think a 1.5 gain screen would be perfect for 3D gaming. Brightness should reach similar levels like monitors then.

According to the data sheet the projector has a noise level of 25 dB which is lower than most other projectors. In my opinion this is one of the most silent DLP projectors currently available on the market. You can hear some silent buzzing due to pixel shifting in 60hz mode which completely vanishes when you change to 120hz input signal / play in 3D.

In my opinion rainbow artifacts are very rarely visible as this projector has a RGBRGB wheel. This wheel tends to have much less rainbow artefacts than RGBCYW wheels. Of course it also depends on the individual person if he / she is sensitive to those artefacts but I am very happy with it.

PC with Nvidia graphics card
3D Vision Emitter (it only servers as a license dongle. It's sold with the 3D Vision 2 Kit)
DLP glasses (see FAQ for recommendations which one to buy)
Step by step instructions how to make 3D work:
Connect one of the HDMI ports of the projector to the HDMI port on your graphics card.
Connect the 3D Vision emitter (pyramid) to your PC via USB cable
Turn on the projector and open Nvidia Control Panel (right click desktop / Nvidia Control Panel)
Go to "Set up multiple displays"
and untick all devices except for "Optoma UHD"
Click on button "Apply". You should see your Windows desktop on the projector screen now
In Nvidia Control Panel click on "Set up Stereosopic 3D"
Tick option "Enable stereosopic 3D"
If 3D Vision isn't set up yet a setup wizard is automatically started. Choose 3D Vision there (not anaglyph) and complete the wizard. If it's already configured just make sure "Generic CRT" is selected from the list.
Start a game
Make sure ingame resolution is set to 1920x1080 @120hz
On your remote control press the "3D" button to turn on 3D mode / DLP sync flash
Turn on your DLP glasses
If eyes are swapped then press CTRL + T several times until it's fixed. Alternatively you can toggle 3D on / off a few times with your remote control. Another more advanced option is to use 3dmigoto for reversing eyes. I don't recommend to use the Reverse 3D function of the projector itself as it's faulty
In the dialog window click on "Quick Setup" (this will skip the setup wizard and enable Stereoscopic 3D)
Correcting 3D depth:
When playing in stereo 3D mode you will probably notice that 3D depth is far too high even if you lower 3D separation to 50%. The reason for this lies in the Nvidia driver which assumes that you play on a 17 inch CRT monitor in Generic CRT mode. So in other words the 3D depth is optimized for a very small display and this results in a 3D depth which is far too high. We can fix this by telling the driver that we actually play on a 100 inch (or taller) sized projector screen.
Go to tab "Settings" and click on sub-tab "Display Profiles"
For the projector profile tick the option "Screen size" and enter the size of your projector screen in inches
Tick option "3D display type" and choose "3D Vision / 3DTV Play / Generic CRT" from the list
Tick option "Link profile to display" and choose "Optoma UHD" from the list (when doing so the projector profile is automatically chosen when you play games on this device)
When starting a game via 3D Fix Manager now you will notice that 3D depth doesn't hurt your eyes any more and is similar to your 3D Vision monitor (if you have one). If you are also playing on a monitor or TV you should repeat the steps described above accordingly for the monitor and TV profile. When not doing this 3D depth will be wrong for those devices.
Fixing washed out colors / image:
When using the projector with your PC the image looks a bit washed out and black levels are not so good. There is a simple reason for this: By default the Nvidia driver does not use the full color range of your projector! It only utilizes RGB color range 16-255 instead of 0-255. To correct this please do the following:
Open Nvidia Control Panel (right click desktop / Nvidia Control Panel)
Go to "Change resolution"
Enable "Use Nvidia color settings" (by default this is set to "Use default color settings" which caps color range to 16-255)
Set "Output dynamic range" to "Full"
Click on "Apply" button
Press the "Menu" button on the remote control of your projector
Select "Image Settings"
Scroll down and select "Color Settings"
Make sure "Color Space" is set to "Auto"
Image quality on Windows desktop and games should look much better now.
For fixing black levels in movies please follow these instructions:
Open Nvidia Control Panel (right click desktop / Nvidia Control Panel)
Go to "Adjust video color settings" and enable "With the Nvidia settings"
Click on "Advanced" and set "Dynamic Range" to "Full"
Increasing color saturation:
For RGB color mode you cannot set color saturation in projector OSD menu.
However you can still set color saturation easily via Nvidia Control Panel. So if you want a more colorful look please follow these instructions:
Open Nvidia Control Panel (right click desktop / Nvidia Control Panel)
Go to "Adjust desktop color settings" and set "Digital vibrance" to a value higher than 50% to have a more saturated look. My favorite value is 66%.
How to use Nvidia DSR for 3D mode:
DSR is the acronym for Dynamic Super Resolution. What it does is rendering the game internally in a higher resolution and scaling it down to the native resolution of the display. As a result we get a similar effect like Anti Aliasing but DSR is improving the whole picture quality while Anti Aliasing is only smoothing polygon edges. DSR is especially useful for games where no Anti Aliasing or just simple post processing mechanisms like FXAA is available.
The problem with DSR is that it always scales down the image to the native resolution of the display. Nvidia does not allow us to set an individual target resolution. For Optoma UHD 40 / 50 the native resolution is 3840 x 2160 but we need to downscale the image to 1920 x 1080 because higher resolutions do not support 120hz refresh rate which is required for 3D mode!
To force the driver to downscale to 1920x1080 we have to apply an EDID override. An EDID contains all information about the display like the supported resolutions, refresh rates, manufacturer and so on. I've prepared a modified EDID where all 4k resolutions have been removed - by installing this EDID we can trick the Nvidia driver to think that we use a native full hd projector. DSR will downsample to 1920x1080 then.
Now you might think by applying the EDID override you are downgrading your expensive 4K projector to a simple Full HD projector because all native 4k resolutions are gone. You are not completely wrong with your assumption! But remember that you have 2 HDMI ports on the projector. The EDID override only applies to one of them. If you connect the projector with 2 HDMI cables to your PC you can still use 4K resolutions by simply changing input signal to the other HDMI port where we still use the original EDID! Problem solved! Of course you can uninstall the EDID override anytime - nothing on the projector is changed. Only in Windows!
Please follow these steps to apply the EDID override for using DSR:
Download this file and unzip it. It contains a modified EDID for the projector where I removed all resolutions which were higher than 1920x1080
Connect your HDMI cable to "HDMI 1" port of your projector. By doing so we cann still use the other port "HDMI 4K" for native 4K resolutions
Follow the instructions from this youtube tutorial to install the EDID Override ;t=208s
After installing the EDID override please do the follow steps to add DSR resolutions:
Open Nvidia Control Panel (right click desktop / Nvidia Control Panel)
Go to "Manage 3D Settings" and click on "Global Settings"
In the list click on "DSR - Factors" and tick factors "1.78" and "4.00". This will add 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 DSR resolutions
Set "DSR Smoothness" to "0%" for not losing any sharpness with DSR resolutions
Click on button "Apply"
For making sure DSR resolutions are listed in games reboot your system
In games you should be able to choose 4k and WQHD resolution in 2D/3D mode now

This is a brilliant question! Now that you ask I remember that the guy from AVS forum who first confirmed that this projector works with 3D Vision also mentioned something like this that he made 3D movies work with stereoscopic player without the emitter!
I'll test this out and update this guide here if this indeed works! For gaming you definitely need the emitter (there is no other way) but if you want to watch 3D movies only there might be a workaround!

They replied that they don't have compatibility information with this !!!graphics card!!!.......
I am waiting for reviews, if they are good i will ask the vendor if I can return it when 3D Vision doesn't work.

Customer support never knows more than the customer lol. Why should that ever change? There are only simple not qualified low wage workers on the phone. You would have to ask the developers / engineers behind the projector but you would never get them to the phone.
Reviews are useless in my opinion. Just order it from Amazon... or other big seller where you can return it. In Germany you have the right to return a device within 2 weeks after buying from any online shop.

No manufacturer would ever claim support for anything unless it was part of the official specifications.

It's interesting that the 4K550ST is available in US through dealers only and priced at around $5000. I found some dealers as I looked at projectorcentral, ranging in price from $4500 to $5500. UK dealers have 4K550 in stock priced at 4000 pounds. I couldn't find 4K550 anywhere in US or Canada.
I think if we can get it at around $4000, confirm 3D Vision support, and especially those of us with little control over ambient light, then it might be worth.
Otherwise, we have confirmed 3D Vision working with Optoma UHD50/40, and with the pace technology is moving it may not be worth putting so much money for something that's gonna be replaced a couple years from now. We might see smart projectors, 1440p 3D at some point etc etc. It's definitely coming, just a matter of time.
For now I'm waiting for a good deal on Optoma UHD50 solely as it's confirmed to work with 3D Vision at 1920X1080@120Hz.
I got a new replacement UHD 40 from Amazon to replace it, but it has the same smell of heated plastics. Do you guys have had the same sort of smell? And if so, does it go away with time and use? My first unit has only about 8 hours of usage.
Besides that, great projector, but I (and my wife) can't tolerate it in normal lamp mode.

But you would have to be very unlucky to have such a problem with a replacement projector too.

My guess is so far that I've been just unlucky to get two projectors from the same batch that may have some sort of assembly failure. Anyway, I'll return the second unit (which by the way was used when I got it and the lens was heavily scratched) and keep first unit still for a week. If smell doesn't vanish, I'll return it also. Not too much hopes, though.

This is a brilliant question! Now that you ask I remember that the guy from AVS forum who first confirmed that this projector works with 3D Vision also mentioned something like this that he made 3D movies work with stereoscopic player without the emitter!
I'll test this out and update this guide here if this indeed works! For gaming you definitely need the emitter (there is no other way) but if you want to watch 3D movies only there might be a workaround!
Like always I'll make a step by step instruction how to set up Stereosopic Player.

However it's pretty unlikely hat 3D bluray works with Stereosopic Player. The developer says on his website that the software cannot decrypt bluray discs and needs a separate decryption tool which seems to be more ore less illegal: https://www.3dtv.at/Products/Player/Bluray_en.aspx
But I'm not sure if this info is still correct. The website isn't really up to date as it still also says that stereoscopic player would be the only software capable of playing 3D DVD films. This information is not true any more. Power DVD can do this, too. So it's doubtful if the bluray info on the site is correct as well. One has just to try.

I just found a 2D bluray! I completely forgot that I bought it in the past :D. Unfortunately the content of the bluray can't be decrypted via Stereoscopic Player. The same 100% also applies to 3D blurays.
So to anwer the original question: No. The 3D Vision emitter is definitely required to watch 3D blurays on UHD 40/50. For watching 3D DVDs and MKV files the emitter is not required.
I'll update the FAQ with the new information.
