Gtx 480 SLI and 3D vision single monitor. FPS hit?

Hi guys,
I have pre-ordered 2 Gtx 480's. I am currently running the Alienware monitor in 1920x1080. All of the benchmarks that I see for the GTX 480 SLI is at a much higher resolution which I don't need. I want to be able to run all of my games (Metro 2033, JC2 etc) with full effects in 3D vision at 1920x 1080.
All of the reviews are saying that GTX 280 in SLI on a single display at a resolution lower than the 2000's is overkill. However, these reviews are not taking 3D vision into account.
Do you guys expect the same performance hit with when running 3D vision with the 400 series as compared to the 200 series?
In the chart below for Bad Company 2, is it reasonable to expect a 50% hit to FPS with 3D vision enabled? Instead of 100 FPS I will get 50 FPS? Ihope this is not the case but I suspect it will be. Thoughts? Opinions?

Its closer to a 40% chop, possibly less than that depending on the game engine. Additionally you'll find that you won't want lashings of AA (i dont use any!) as the very nature of combining 2 views gives its own AA effect. To give you an idea i find BC2 runs 'alright' in 3d on my single 260, but i dont bother with it from a competitive stand point as performance can get too low when it gets rough. I'm fully expecting one fermi to provide more than enough framerate to play it competitively for me anyways.

Having tested BFBC2 with my GTX 295 i doubt the credibility of this chart. With everything on high, DX10 in 1050p, no AA and 6xAF i had approximatively 20 FPS in 3D compare to 67 on the chart.
I doubt a better OCed quad-core would make such a drastic difference.

Well it has a lot to do with individual image quality preferences, hardware specs, user ability, and budget.
I personally want the best image quality possible- and the 480 will provide much better AA performance-at that resolution- and will support DX11 game features like tessellation. i run the 295's at 1080p which are pretty much the same speed as the 480 in dx10 and 9 games. i defiantly see slowdowns with super high visual effects in 3d. on the big tv i notice that lower levels of AA- like 4x looks poorer than games look at 16xq or higher- you might not notice these differences on a smaller monitor.
also take into consideration the great minimum FPS performance of the 480. my 295 has good frame rates but does stutter often churning out low minimum frame rates. this is annoying to me. so the 480 will have similar max FPS but should play much smoother with less stuttering.
you will have to have a fast computer with a cpu running at least 3.6 to 4 ghz to get the 480 sli to run well- just one 480 should work fine on a stock i7.
future wise you will be better off with the 480 sli- take a look at what metro 2033 does to dx10 cards- add in 3d and you can kiss higher visual qualities good by. this will be the trend with newer games and the old hardware.
To unlock the higher visuals on older dx10 and 9 games you will be going beyond what the games offer on the individual in-game screens- so you have to be familiar with forcing higher visuals in the Nvidia control panel and Nhancer programs. so this set up is not for the average user.

Oh it definately does, clock speed is everything with this game. Having a good gpu to back up is essential of course, but you want those minimum framerates to be good....

I agree with lumpeh that frame rate for 3DVision is usually not 50% of expected but can be closer to 60-70% depending on game engine. If the 3D implementation is synchronizing the r and left eye frames properly then this type of binocular scaling can give better than expected performance (eg. with SLI+3DVision) since some otherwise unused vsynch frames are employed.
I do not think that GTX480 is overkill for the latest games in 3DVision.
In fact METRO2033 is the new crysis, absolutely beautiful looking game especially in 3DVision with high settings. Screenshots showing dx11 tesellation very nice.
I can only run metro2033 1920x1080, with adaptive antialiasing(aaa) (4xaa cuts framerates in half, unplayable) in 3DVision on high (not very high) and even with 2xGTX285 in SLI i average 40-50fps with dips into low 30s, playable. But this title is so visually interseting that I decided to preorder 2 GTX480s SLI to play it TWIMTBP.
Similar for Battlefield BC2 and Assassin's Creed 2, and just cause 2. All of which are beautiful in 3DVision but need powerful GPU to run smooth at high settings. Not to mention crysis II by late in year.

I would not sell your gts250, I use one as dedicated physx together with GTX285SLI and have found that for good physx titles like batmanAA, and dark void it increases my fps by 10-12fps.
I am curious if the GTS250 will still accelerate physx titles when used with GTX480x2 SLI however. We may need to replace it with a gtx260.

I lucked out and got 2 Evga Gtx 480's from Newegg. I hope to have them by tomorrow or Friday. I really hope I can finally run Metro 2033 on Very High with 3D Vision. I will let you guys know how it goes. Hopefully my computer won't explode from all of the power usage and heat. If you haven't gotten your cards yet, keep refreshing Newegg. I got lucky and so can you!

I can assure you that it will definatelly do all the difference in the world. I have just finished playing BFBC2 yesterday with 3D vision enabled at 1680 x 1050 resolution, Advanced settings, 44xAA, 8xAF and my avergare framerate was 45fps. I have 2 GTX 280 in SLI which is pretty close to the 295, maybe 10% faster, but I have a QX9650 at 3.8ghz and 4GB DDR3 1800mhz. My CPU is not a corei7 , but it's a very fast processor and I'm pretty sure if my Quad core was at stock speed 3.0ghz, it would lag a lot with a SLI setup.
I do intend to buy 2 GTX 480 to use in SLI and I was worried about the CPU bottleneck. I read some reviews and I think my QX9650 at 3.83ghz (1800mhz FSB) can handle 2 GTX 480 without sttutering and lagging during games. I do not intend to replace my CPU, Mobo and Ram just yet, maybe next year. GPU upgrade will cost a lot already and I'm saving money. Anyway GPU is the most important piece of hardware to play games smoother at maximum settings.
I was able to play Metro 2033 in Very High with 3D Vision enabled, AAA, AF16 1680 x 1050 with 35fps avergae. But I won't lie that some chapters of Metro 2033, Library, and a few others I had to downgrade my resolution to 1280 x 800 to make it playable, cause framerates would drop below 20's at 1680 x 1050 making it unplayable. But I was able to play at least 80% of Metro 2033 with maximum settings, AAA and 1680 x 1050 resolution.
I did my last GPU upgrade because of Crysis, so Now that Crysis 2 is just arround the corner I wanna be prepared. That's where 2 GTX 480 steps in.
I intend to buy one GTX 480 and than save money for another. Can I use 1 GTX 480 combined with a GTX 280 just for physx??? I never done that and I don't know how to dedicate one card just for physx, how I do that??? I'm just familiar with SLI setup that I've been using for a while.
I have a 790i Ultra SLI mobo, so I would place one GTX 480 in slot 1, which slot should I place the GTX 280 that I wanna use for physx, slot 2 or 3??? I guess I won't need the SLi bridge as it's not SLI. So how the hell my system understands that the GTX 280 is gonna be used just for physx, where I have to activate that in Nvidia control panel??? I've never done that so If someone can show me the way it would help a lot.

I intend to buy one GTX 480 and than save money for another. Can I use 1 GTX 480 combined with a GTX 280 just for physx??? I never done that and I don't know how to dedicate one card just for physx, how I do that??? I'm just familiar with SLI setup that I've been using for a while.
I have a 790i Ultra SLI mobo, so I would place one GTX 480 in slot 1, which slot should I place the GTX 280 that I wanna use for physx, slot 2 or 3??? I guess I won't need the SLi bridge as it's not SLI. So how the hell my system understands that the GTX 280 is gonna be used just for physx, where I have to activate that in Nvidia control panel??? Well it has a lot to do with individual image quality preferences, hardware specs, user ability, and budget.
I personally want the best image quality possible- and the 480 will provide much better AA performance-at that resolution- and will support DX11 game features like tessellation. i run the 295's at 1080p which are pretty much the same speed as the 480 in dx10 and 9 games. i defiantly see slowdowns with super high visual effects in 3d. on the big tv i notice that lower levels of AA- like 4x looks poorer than games look at 16xq or higher- you might not notice these differences on a smaller monitor.
also take into consideration the great minimum FPS performance of the 480. my 295 has good frame rates but does stutter often churning out low minimum frame rates. this is annoying to me. so the 480 will have similar max FPS but should play much smoother with less stuttering.
you will have to have a fast computer with a cpu running at least 3.6 to 4 ghz to get the 480 sli to run well- just one 480 should work fine on a stock i7.
future wise you will be better off with the 480 sli- take a look at what metro 2033 does to dx10 cards- add in 3d and you can kiss higher visual qualities good by. this will be the trend with newer games and the old hardware.
To unlock the higher visuals on older dx10 and 9 games you will be going beyond what the games offer on the individual in-game screens- so you have to be familiar with forcing higher visuals in the Nvidia control panel and Nhancer programs. so this set up is not for the average user.

I agree with lumpeh that frame rate for 3DVision is usually not 50% of expected but can be closer to 60-70% depending on game engine. If the 3D implementation is synchronizing the r and left eye frames properly then this type of binocular scaling can give better than expected performance (eg. with SLI+3DVision) since some otherwise unused vsynch frames are employed.
I do not think that GTX480 is overkill for the latest games in 3DVision.
In fact METRO2033 is the new crysis, absolutely beautiful looking game especially in 3DVision with high settings. Screenshots showing dx11 tesellation very nice.
I can only run metro2033 1920x1080, with adaptive antialiasing(aaa) (4xaa cuts framerates in half, unplayable) in 3DVision on high (not very high) and even with 2xGTX285 in SLI i average 40-50fps with dips into low 30s, playable. But this title is so visually interseting that I decided to preorder 2 GTX480s SLI to play it TWIMTBP.
Similar for Battlefield BC2 and Assassin's Creed 2, and just cause 2. All of which are beautiful in 3DVision but need powerful GPU to run smooth at high settings. Not to mention crysis II by late in year.

I would not sell your gts250, I use one as dedicated physx together with GTX285SLI and have found that for good physx titles like batmanAA, and dark void it increases my fps by 10-12fps.
I am curious if the GTS250 will still accelerate physx titles when used with GTX480x2 SLI however. We may need to replace it with a gtx260.

I can assure you that it will definatelly do all the difference in the world. I have just finished playing BFBC2 yesterday with 3D vision enabled at 1680 x 1050 resolution, Advanced settings, 44xAA, 8xAF and my avergare framerate was 45fps. I have 2 GTX 280 in SLI which is pretty close to the 295, maybe 10% faster, but I have a QX9650 at 3.8ghz and 4GB DDR3 1800mhz. My CPU is not a corei7 , but it's a very fast processor and I'm pretty sure if my Quad core was at stock speed 3.0ghz, it would lag a lot with a SLI setup.
I do intend to buy 2 GTX 480 to use in SLI and I was worried about the CPU bottleneck. I read some reviews and I think my QX9650 at 3.83ghz (1800mhz FSB) can handle 2 GTX 480 without sttutering and lagging during games. I do not intend to replace my CPU, Mobo and Ram just yet, maybe next year. GPU upgrade will cost a lot already and I'm saving money. Anyway GPU is the most important piece of hardware to play games smoother at maximum settings.
I was able to play Metro 2033 in Very High with 3D Vision enabled, AAA, AF16 1680 x 1050 with 35fps avergae. But I won't lie that some chapters of Metro 2033, Library, and a few others I had to downgrade my resolution to 1280 x 800 to make it playable, cause framerates would drop below 20's at 1680 x 1050 making it unplayable. But I was able to play at least 80% of Metro 2033 with maximum settings, AAA and 1680 x 1050 resolution.
I did my last GPU upgrade because of Crysis, so Now that Crysis 2 is just arround the corner I wanna be prepared. That's where 2 GTX 480 steps in.
I intend to buy one GTX 480 and than save money for another. Can I use 1 GTX 480 combined with a GTX 280 just for physx??? I never done that and I don't know how to dedicate one card just for physx, how I do that??? I'm just familiar with SLI setup that I've been using for a while.
I have a 790i Ultra SLI mobo, so I would place one GTX 480 in slot 1, which slot should I place the GTX 280 that I wanna use for physx, slot 2 or 3??? I guess I won't need the SLi bridge as it's not SLI. So how the hell my system understands that the GTX 280 is gonna be used just for physx, where I have to activate that in Nvidia control panel??? I've never done that so If someone can show me the way it would help a lot.
I doubt a better OCed quad-core would make such a drastic difference.

I can assure you that it will definatelly do all the difference in the world. I have just finished playing BFBC2 yesterday with 3D vision enabled at 1680 x 1050 resolution, Advanced settings, 44xAA, 8xAF and my avergare framerate was 45fps. Do you think that a GTX 480 and a GTX 280 dedicated for Physx will be faster than 2 GTX 280 in SLI??? I will buy another GTX 480, but I can't buy 2 at the same time cause it costs a lot of money. I will use a GTX 280 for physx until I get another 480 and enable SLI system.
I am familiar with Nvidia control panel, but I've never seen an option where you choose a card for Physx. I do see an option where you can enable and disable physx, just like the SLI option. Anyway I've always used a SLI system, so maybe because I had the 2 GTX 280 connected through the SLI bridge the option to choose a card just for physx doesn't show.
