@Rage - I see where you're coming from, but a single 1070 gives me the option to upgrade to SLI later. A single 1080 doesn't give me the ability to upgrade to SLI (as that's not within my budget).
I've spent a lot of time trying to get DSR to work on my projector, but haven't succeeded yet. I may give it another try later, but currently I can't get that working. I just crank the AA instead.

It seems a single 1080 would be a step sideways and barely an improvement for me if you follow that SLI performance logic and if SLI actually works
But it does seem most of the AAA titles are trending to not support it or very poorly of late.
Also they are dropping official support for 3x and 4x SLI. (although you can unlock it if you request a key)
I am more than happy with my current performance in games, I was hoping this was going to be the single card solution for 4k or 3d gaming but it doesn't seem quite there yet. I think Ill be happy until that elusive single card solution comes along, and I am hoping with the next iteration (Ti) or whatever we will finally see it.

Have you seen the AMD 480 prices? $199!
You could get two for less money than a 1070.
Nvidia really need to cut their prices. Goes to show how overpriced nvidia cards are!

You may have noticed that all similar announcements are showing the new cards with the blower type cooling? There must be a reason! I think they think it's better because heatsink hot air goes out of the case, and I agree with that. :D

@Pirateguybrush, what problems are you running into with DSR on projector? Do you have a thread, or you can pm me?
The ATi 480 will lower the price of a future GTX 1060, but 1070 and 1080 prices won't be touched if history plays out. Certainly not for the next couple of months at least, by which time our 970 resale prices have plummeted :( It seems we are stuck between a rock and a hard place...
@Rhialto, yep, blower types are louder and less efficient, but great for SLi setups as the air goes out. nVidia tend to block off half the vent though:

What I have found is that if you have good cooling and space, even though the blower types are theoretically better, the fan coolers are actually better IRL, for overclocking and heat build-up.
Dissapointingly, 1070 / 1080 custom PCBs and open coolers this generation seem to fare no better than the reference blower cards, even though they are 200 £/Euro/$ more expensive:

http://www.computerbase.de/2016-05/asus-geforce-gtx-1080-strix-oc-test/5/
I'm now leaning towards the cheapo reference blower cards from the less popular brands, seeing as that there is virtually no overclocking headroom this generation. How the partners can justify charging 200 £/Euro/$ more for no real benefit except a nice looking cooler which no-one is going to see once installed, is beyond me...

Thanks for the offer of help Rage, I might take you up on it at some point - if I can be bothered making another attempt. I'm ok for the moment though. I've posted a bit about it in one of the DSR threads (something about DSR and 3d tv play I think), but since then there have been a number of alternate methods for getting it working, which I haven't tried yet.
As for the issue of pricing, you may be right that it could take a while before they start competing on price - but it could make the prospect of SLI 1070 cheaper, too.

TBH, SLI is something I almost immediately regret bought last cycle and I had used it for 4 cycles. It was to the point I sold my two SLI cards 3 months into release of the 970. Literally the 3 big three AAA games in a row had problems.
Far Cry 4 - Months to get sli without visuals issues/ performance issues.
Dragon Age Inquisition - Same.
Shadows of mordor - Took like a week to sort out SLI maybe longer.
I pretty much always play a major game at release in 2D. 3D is my motivator to replay a game. So paying for launch day games got me reemed. I would love it if I had money for 2 highest tier cards but I don't. Its just the worst when a game you been excited for year(s) comes out and you are all of sudden having performance issues.
Not to mention no one has any idea whats going on with future engine support Unity, Unreal Engine 4, let alone VR.

Well.
I committed a G1 Gigabyte Gaming. Its not the fastest but its up there and at a price tag of $650. A bit higher then I wanted BUT
I sold my 980 gtx at $330 . So I am pretty happy since I got in before the flood of 980/980ti/etc went on the market. I really can't even see them at $200 because then what would a used TI/TITANX/1080 cost?
Its kind of nuts that I got lucky enough to sell a card for $50 less then what a 1070 will be cost in a like 2 weeks NEW.

Nice upgrade. I'm also super surprised the prices haven't crashed. There is no point in buying a 980 today. A 1080 is 2x the performance, for real, and a 1070 is faster at $380. Used makes some sense, but certainly not new.
One good thing to note for upgrades is that at least for the time being, the drivers have not been complete trash like they were last year. I specifically did not upgrade to a 980 ti because I did not want to be stuck on the latest drivers. That seems like less of a problem for today.

Well, I'm waiting for the Asus Strix ($840) which is a good price. Here in Europe we have different prices :( MSi Gaming x goes for $970.
I just sold my GTX 970 with equivalent of $300 which is quite OK considering I sold it to like 70% of what I paid for it new.
Market hasn't crashed Nvidia hasn't dropped price of existing cards yet. There is just too little of the cards on the market for them to do it.
I bought a 1080 gaming g1 for $650 from newegg and the product recommendation page. Is referring me to 980 Ti's for that price or more.
The BAD news is I expected newegg to ship it from NJ which is normally where I get packages from newegg. I didn't consider that they would all be on the exact opposite side of country. Though I guess it just came from China or wherever Gigabyte is located.
Good news is I got two rainy day games on my xbox one.
Edit: Saturday I am getting it. I thought it was going to be Monday/Tuesday. Not bad.
I get to replay Sunset Overdrive so not a loss.

I think it's because the partner 1070s aren't out yet.
I have been watching the Australian retail prices of 980ti's and they are sliding from 900-1000 AU to 800-900 AU here. The 1070 FE is going to be about 800 AU at launch, so the average 980ti will equal or lessen that then - so 750-800 AU type of thing.
You wont be able to get a 10 series card for less than 700 AU until the 1070 partner cards are out and by then I expect new 980ti's to be selling closer to 600 AU, with 980s less than 450 new and 970s less than 300. This will open up some really cheap options, so long as the 9 series keep being sold.
And personally, I still haven't decided between a 980ti and 1070 - price to performance will decide for me when all options are on the table.
