A bold vision/dream...
Okay, so I'm currently researching a new rig, and have been reading up on various developments.

Came up with this crazy idea, using currently (or about-to-be) available consumer level technology. (No way I've personally got enough disposable cash to build this dream though... )

Firstly, I need to ask if NVidia has the ability to mimic ATi's Eyefinity using 2 discrete cards (i.e. super-wide surround display)

Coz if it can, can you imagine combining

a) 3DVision goggles

B) (at least) dual GTX295, GTX470 or above cards (you'll be requiring (1280x3=)[b]3840x720[/b] support at 40-50fps, [b]*3D*[/b])

c) THREE 720p (or 1080p) 120Hz 3D-ready projectors

d) Microsoft's upcoming Kinect (Project Natal) [It's USB based, but will probably need some driver support for Win7/x64 platforms, although Bill Gates seems to think that Microsoft is keen to do this... eventually]

e) some sort of 7.1 surround sound


**System would cost ~USD1200 for an Intel X58 based platform that would not bottleneck the graphics (graphics costed separately), and another USD800-1500 for 2 to 4 high-end NVidia cards in SLI, and another USD1500-3000 for 3x 3D-ready 720p projectors (cheapish entry-level models, I'd imagine). So, ballpark USD5000???

Can you imagine an interactive (thanks to Kinect), non-keyboard/mouse/other peripheral based game experience with surround, 100+ inches floor-length screens, [b]in 3D[/b]?!?

I think if someone built a rig that could actually pull all these off, you'd have a commercial winner - as in, you could sell time on (i.e. rent out) your machine, and I think there would be a market for it! The brilliant thing is, there are already so many titles that work on this rig that would be IMMENSE... Unfortunately, Crysis might require a *bit* too much juice for this setup to work at above 40-50 fps, but there are PLENTY of recent titles that a single GTX295 can run at 1920x1080 2D at 180+fps, which would be about halved for 3D, but sped up for 720p instead, and then a third for tri-display...

Well, the idea in itself is indeed tempting, but I'd prefer some kind of VR setup. Shouldn't it be possible with todays technology to create glasses with 2 built-in 1080p or 720p displays? Combine that with a head-tracking device and 7.1 headphones. Combine that again with a sensor-type device like natal to register your movement, combined again with something like the nunchuk/wiimote from the wii and you'd be of to fantasy land.

Life is like a fully powered 3D-Vision rig where you can wrec havoc in just cause 2.

You forget you want to hide speakers behind the screen :D

Sound itself needs 1.5 teraflops to be beleivable (like photo realistic GFX) 2x stereo plus 4-5 subs is def enough for me.
