Usually, but not every time, a product update is expected over a year after initail product launch.

Will the next hardware update be available in 1st half or 2nd half of 2010?

Well ... in a sense there has been somewhat of a product update as a new generation of 3d monitors are being released by Dell and Acer at present and who knows who will follow in the coming months.

Probably not since "verstion 2.0" would basically be the same thing. There's only so many "improvements" you can make to shutter-glasses, the function has to be the same.

I wouldn't mind seeing a hardware or firmware update that would address the sync/flashing/blinking problems that many of us have, but I won't hold my breath. For now I suspect it's more likely nvidia will devote their limited resources to driver updates and game compatibility with the existing product.

the only thing i could see them doing to improve on teh glasses is maybe make them more comfortable behind the ear. Maybe slim them down a bit if possible, or make them more flexible or adjustable. I mean, I've had a 13 year old try them on and complain they were too tight.

still, i couldn't see myself shelling out for new glasses exclusively for comfort reasons. Maybe if there was some sort of trade-in on them or if i decided to keep this pair as a second set, if/when we start getting a steady supply of 3d movies.

Nvidia planned a glasses upgrade since 08/09 see last entry on http://www.3dathome.org/files/ST4-04_Activ...es_Database.pdf

Nvidia seriously needs to upgrade their glasses that were OKish when relaeased but even then severely deficient compared to several others especially crystaleyes. I recently got a pair of Samsung SSG1000 glasses ($129 glasses, emitter and tridef package), these glasses are at least twice as clear as my nvidia glasses and obviously have much better off to on to off timings > result > far clearer 3D effects, less ghosting and crosstalked image perception, further with the IZ3D driver I use (DLP mode) there are virtually no convergence issues (compared to nvidia drivers). Before I really liked the nvidia glasses but now I can not bear to wear them after my recent experience of 2008 Samsung glasses, nvidia seriously needs to upgrade their hardware and performance to stay in the 3D market as alternatives become more available.

Clearer lenses, better transition timings, far better drivers convergance handling and compliance with display hardware are already offered by others. The last point is really driven home by the game avatar, nvidia needs its own driver that introduces corruption / problems ontop of the dimmed viewing experience they provide, whereas the SSG1000 glasses need no driver at all (sync off TV and game outputs checkerboard) result is startling improvement in all aspects of game including many effects unseeable on nvidia offering. iZ3D drivers by the way support crossfirex and SLI (including tri and quad) 64 bit systems but only DX8 and DX9 games at present DX11 coming soon. Avatar without a driver outputs DX10, I hope the future tends to native 3D support like avatar that makes proprietary drivers with their quirks less important, and suggests that meaningful advances in 3D experience will primarily be dependent on the improved glasses. WHAT GOOD IS THE BEST SCREEN AND DRIVERS IF YOU WATCH THROUGH DARK, POORLY SYNCED ANS SLOWLY REACTING GLASSES LIKE NVIDIA'S CURRENT OFFERING IF COMPARED TO SEVERAL PAST AND MANY NEW PRODUCTS.

It's maybe time you realize that the nvidia Geforce 3D vision system key advantage over competiting solutions isn't about the glasses, and it itsn't either about games compatibility (when geforce 3D vision was initially released, the nvidia driver used to have it's ass kicked by both iZ3D and DDD's drivers, now they're about equal with iZ3D's, varying from game to game).

The key advantage of this system is exclusive compatibility with desktop 120Hz not-3Dready LCD monitors : only nvidia can do it, and nvidia only supports it's own glasses on it's own systems.
Since gamers already want these displays for 120Hz 2D gaming, they can upgrade their displays to the nvidia geforce 3D system for cheaper than any competitor (whick all require special displays, usually quite old displays).

Back in June I Had a chat with an nvidia rep at a trade show, he told me the upcoming "pro" version of the glasses would be almost identical but use RF sync instead of infrared.

There is enough what Nvidia could improve to justify a 2.0 Version:

Brighter Glasses without the color shade: The current are way to dark, ELSA made that better 10 Years ago.

Head Tracking: Would really be worth bying new glasses and easy to implement (LEDs in Glasses + a modified webcam)

Support of new standards: Output for 3D TVs like HDMI 1.4

Overall Quality Controll: flickering, screen dedection, brocken solderings in glasses, ghosting on certified Displays, ...
It's maybe time you realize that this thread is about glasses, you are right though that nvidia does not have a glasses or game advantage at present. Further to your off topic rant.

You call support for small (deceases size of artifacts and convergance issues in nvidia drivers that if viewed on bigger, brighter screens are more apparent due to the accuracy of the screens) , slow refreshing, dim (decreases ghosting from displays poor refresh method and driver focus / convergance issues), low colour gamut, low contrast srceens that do not support more open 3D implementations and generally offer a less versatile and a much worse 3d experience than 3D ready plasma and DLP solutions an advantage! 120HZ function for 2D gaming is great but nearly all 3D Ready screens can do that (iZ3D driver convergence and seperation set to zero) but some people do not know it, and may wrongly believe that they are getting a unique advantage rather than being handicapped by their special nvidia technology. In fairness to nvidia exclusive screens most other LCD 3D displays have similar hardware limitations but these do not neccesarily restrict the freedom of consumers to choose their software support. I wonder how nvidia's conduct will stack up when tested by consumer protection laws, probably not well.

I think that previously nvidia was the best value for money and more functional 3D gaming solution but those days are clearly over if they really existed, especially in terms of the performance of their glasses not to mention their current drivers ratcrap convergance issues and poor compatability even with thier own products (iZ3D can support Quad and 3-way SLI in DLP mode but not on its' own displays similar to nvidia who can not support them on any displays), I thank nvidia for their poor support and driver performance as it made this former happy customer look at other alternatives and now I am enjoying much better 3D experiences but would still like nvidia to up their performance and again spur on the 3D revolution.

You may have noticed that nvidia has just run a little survey on feedback of the glasses, so we should expect a revised package some times. However, going by the nature of the survey I think it is more about cutting down costs and saving on accessories included not about new revised glasses.

on 1: I own Elsa Metabytes and nvidias, I wouldn't actually call the revelators better in terms of the shutters...
2: would be cool, but I do not see that happen. It's a completely different beast, more like a input controller like a joystick that defines your point of view within the game. The game engine must mandatory have native support a variable p.o.v in order to make that possible (alternatively you could render a overscanned picture and crop it - resource hog alert!). And it only works on games - this year should be under the star of 3D movies though...
well, 3 is a mere diver issue and does not actually require different hardware, nor does 4 - QA can suck on new products the same, and ghosting definately is a display issue and out of the responsibility of nvidia - Still, they could improve this with optimized / adjustable timing settings at the expense of even further reduced brightness....

Most gamers only dream about playing on projectors, even when they do have the money for it, most of them stick to destop monitors or if they really dare... an HDTV... There's a psychological barrier to using Projectors, and rear projection TVs are fading away, you can't even find one in most european stores.

So yes it is an advantage, and a big big one : it's called market exclusivity. It keeps your clients around your own brand (Geforce GPU). It's the exact same principle as Cuda and Physix hardware acceleration.
1 - if you already have a 120Hz monitor, the only 3D solution supporting your screen is nvidia 3D vision (the ATi + iZ3D + Bit Cauldron combo won't be around for 6 months at least if we're lucky, and more realistically at least a year before it's actually working flawlessly).
2 - if you already have a 120Hz monitor, why in hell would you swap that monitor for an outdated 2 1/2 years old and slow display... unless you are a 3D gamer who is only interested in 3D performance and know each advantage and flaw of each display system.
Not enyone can afford a new screen every year, when it comes to choice i really can't blame people choosing the 120Hz 2D display + optional 3D vision instead of a single Zalman monitor (or a DLP projector).

Weird because all the other 3D capable screens I know only have 60Hz inputs when at full resolution, including the iZ3D screen, Zalman screen (which i own), Hyundai screens and the vast majority of 3D-ready DLPTVs and projectors.
The iZ3D driver does not calculates the frames at 120Hz, it uses the same refresh rate in both 2D and 3D, even at zero separation/convergence.

This is news to me, especially since no one from the iZ3D dev team or iz3d forums seem to be aware of it. When asked about SLI/Crossfire support they systematically answer that the driver does work but only uses one GPU core and does not benefit from the other GPU cores. They are still working on it.
So far only nvidia supports 3D + dual-GPU SLI.
120HZ function for 2D gaming is great but nearly all 3D Ready screens can do that (iZ3D driver convergence and seperation set to zero) but some people do not know it, and may wrongly believe that they are getting a unique advantage rather than being handicapped by their special nvidia technology.

(iZ3D can support Quad and 3-way SLI in DLP mode but not on its' own displays similar to nvidia who can not support them on any displays)

3DVision 2.0 wish list.

1. New glasses that offer a super wide FOV to complement 3DVision surround that would eliminate 2D to 3D transition in your peripheral vision.
2. Auto convergence
3. Sync adjustments
4. Ability to swap eyes
5. Enhanced "generic display" mode that allows the user to specify 3D Method (interlaced, page flipped, dual display) without all of the detection issues. If it detects my setup and works perfectly then great! If not, I want the ability to tweak it until it does.
6. Change emitter to offer IR, DLPLink, Zigbee radio, as well as Bluetooth and allow the use of 3rd Party shutters. (NV, you still make money on the video card, drivers and emitter!)

I can dream, can't I? :)
the only thing i could see them doing to improve on teh glasses is maybe make them more comfortable behind the ear.
