Of course they know what CPU you are running, it's listed in your Windows Experience Index. It's listed in Device Manager, everything has a device id. I've no idea what they can or can't do as far as supporting or not supporting them, i never looked into it.

I'm not ever upgrading to W10 on this PC, I might do a dual boot. But more than likely, I'll put W10 on a new rig.
The thing that pissed me off were those huge updates, loading all those un-needed DLLs and Telementary crap. Thankfully windows restore came to the rescue and I was able to hide the updates. What a PITA.
Yah, I have no love for the way that Microsoft has tried to force everyone to W10. I also hate how Microsoft is sleeping with the advertising industry. It's all about the revenue generated by advertising that's achieved via data mining and tracking. I know that you all love Bing.

Microsoft just wants win10 on every machine just because they propably made a deal with nsi or other organisation that likes to spy on people.
Atleast you have to wonder why the win10 is SOOOO pushy

If hardware manufactures allow this Win 10 only thing, they'll be cutting of their nose despite their face. 70% (or something) of home windows users are still on 7.
I'll upgrade to 10 when I need direct X 12 for a particular game - so far that particular game doesn't exist. But, when I do upgrade, it will be to the LTSB version, MS can keep their Cortana, Edge, App store beta windows use the public as guinea pigs, forced update and advertising version to themselves.

I should have been more clear that it doesn't make any difference to Win7 what you are running. It knows the name, because it can get that from the CPU rom info. But it doesn't do anything with the info. It can be AMD, Intel, VIA, it doesn't care. It also has no info about what actual clock speed it is running at. If you overclock, none of the Win7 tools show it.

So what, we'll have to use ad blockers on our OS? That's just ridiculous.
We pay for an OS, so we should be able to configure it as we see fit. If that means no upgrades, then no upgrades. I've turned them completely off in Win 7, after a fresh install, so none of the data mining stuff ever installs. Win 10 won't even allow this.
Google is free, so I get I have to use an ad blocker if I want to avoid it's adverts and data mining.

lol, yah good ol' Google. They got in a bit of trouble for their Street View cars "inadvertantly" collecting e-mail passwords, as well as medical and banking info that is covered under stricter privacy rules. I always like the way that Curse Gaming tried to install 60+ cookies on my computer when I would visit their site to get WoW add-ons. Then there's that whole Double-Click thing that's been around forever.
I just hate adds targeted at me and/or search results. But anymore, clearing cookies and cache isn't enough with Canvas Finger Printing, Digital Tokens and whatever else there is. Cookie Wall or Cookie Monster used to work great, but not anymore. Though there are decent browser plugins that are available. AdBlock is a must due to those annoying videos that like to play on so many sites now.
Their tracking doesn't bother me, but skewed search results and suggested purchase items are annoying. I'd like to be able to turn it off without having to resort to a program like CCleaner to repeatedly clean my history/cookies.

I have no idea why manufactures still can do this type of thing when they literally cost them a few bucks when mass manufactured.

The performance for these new cards also surprises me. It's quite a lot better than the incremental bump I was expecting.
Here is a good comparison of GTX 980 to 1080: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1714?vs=1716
I was wrong on that "faster than SLI 980" marketing claim they made. Roughly speaking, it is. The confusion is them pushing the VR benchmark using multi-projection.
If you take into account the fact that even in good cases SLI doesn't scale 100%, the 1080 is about as fast as SLI 980.
This card turns the value proposition upside down for SLI. Normally two lesser cards in SLI are quite a bit faster than the expensive mother at the top of the charts. And thus, it's been worth it to SLI from a value standpoint.
At the moment, the 980 is still selling for something like $450 for lesser cards. Maybe that price will crack after 1080s are available past the regrettable founders cards. I can't see how the cards can hold those prices after these 10xx are available.
I'm also interested in the 1070 once we can see how it performs. If it matches the current expectations, that will be a $379 card that matches the 980ti performance.
It will also be extremely interesting to see how laptop parts might stack up, because the power per watt is better for these new chips as well. A 1080M part will likely best the current best 980 desktop.

Laptops are moving more and more to external drives.
980s are going to be worth like dirt soon. Which is why I really want to move. They were like $325 used on ebay prior to announcement. They can't even be worth $300 new soon cause its literally half as good as a 980.
I don't think people realize how much of a jump in performance/price ratio this release is.
