Rise of the Tomb Raider 2016 - 3D Vision Fix

Thanks Blacksmith. I managed to get it working by some combination of voodoo, but I need to make sure it's reproducible, and work out what the actual crucial step is. But here is what I did: - Changed the profile to the original Tomb Raider - Set DX12 ON in the launch settings (so the game would actually start), and had S3D on - Started the game, and it looked like crap - I thought I was disabling DX12, it turns out I accidentally disabled Exclusive Full Screen - Then blow me it worked :-) I ran the Benchmark and it was a constant 60FPS with no observable rendering issues. I'll try and track down later which of the above steps was the "crucial" one, but I guess I am happy for now :-)

I'm playing this game currently. I confirm it's almost perfect in 3D with no fix. I hope you solve these strange issues. Just wanted to share a few things on some similar issues I've had recently, maybe it helps someone. It all started when I changed drivers from 387.95 to 397.64, to try out Battlefront 2. DDU, of course. This started a streak of very strange occurences, like getting video artifacts and crashed with DXGI error in Shadow of War, the mouse stuttering and big delays between key responses in Battlefront 2, and even stuttering when playing Youtube videos. Since I had never encountered these issues before, I put them down to the driver change. However, there are two circumstances that make me think it's Windows 10 instead, and the way it performs updates: - the issues were mostly visible the next day, not the day I changed the drivers - I stayed with this driver and the issues are mostly gone Most of these issues have gone away by themselves, apart from some very specific ones. Stuttering Youtube videos were solved by removing hardware acceleration in browser setting. I've traced the DXGI errors on Shadow of War to a strange behaviour never seen before where the game gets confused if there are big configuration changes. Like a driver change, or switching SLI on/off. The horrible artifacts and inability to turn 3D on seems to come from a particular sensitivity to the screen mode. Many issues were solved by switching between windowed to (exclusive) full screen. Again, behaviours I had never seen before the driver change. So I have to believe that there is something that Windows 10 is doing constantly, without telling the users. There may also be some buggy ways in which it interacts with the Nvidia drivers. This incident made me remember another day, last year, where for a couple of hours I could not play any game due to a very strange error related to DirectX. I was quite alarmed, and it disappeared by itself. I don't have viruses, and I don't think there's anything else that can mess around with DX apart from Windows itself. I am on Win 10 Pro on my main machine, with updates delayed 365 days. Still on 1709 for the moment, but unsure how much it can be really delayed. But I have come to accept the inevitable, it will come one day. Plus, now I try to keep things in perspective and not panic, whenever I encounter strange behaviour on my PC. It's a different era, where you cannot really be sure what happens behind the scenes. it's not like with Win 7 where you could get your PC to a perfect and stable state, then keep it like this for years. Win 10 is a beast, it's alive, ever changing and lurking in the shadows:-)

FWIW... I got the game working a different way by disabling Windows 10 "Full Screen Optimizations". For 1803 v17134 onwards apparently this is now always on by default. To turn if off: 1. Right click on the app .exe 2. Select the "Compatibility" tab 3. Check the box that says "Disable Full Screen Optimization" 4. Save and exit Then when you run the game, just don't select DX12. I think this is why disabling "Exclusive Full Screen" in the game options makes it work, it maybe bypasses Windows 10 shenanigans. I can now run the game in two ways: 1. FullScreen = true; ExclusiveFullScreen = false; DX12 = true; S3D = ON 2. FullScreen = true; ExclusiveFullScreen = true; DX12 = false; S3D = ON Apparently DX12 has some performance improvements if your card is new enough, so that is probably the best setup, but I can't tell any difference visually or performance wise.

Optimized Fullscreen seems to be like an optimized Borderless Fullscreen mode which aims to achieve a similar performance as Exclusive Fullscreen mode. But apparantly it seems to break things like SLI scaling, produce stuttering and breaks 3D. This is at least what I read in different forums. There used to be a global switch in Windows 10 to disable fullscreen optimizations but Microsoft was so clever to remove it with the latest update to force people using their new feature (thank you Microsoft for doing this!). I'll release 3D Fix Manager 1.41 shortly which will fix this issue (you can globally disable fullscreen optimizations with it).

Yes, mike_ar69 I seem to remember having to go a very similar set of hoops to jump through to get it working. On another note I really hate this new tendency to not have an exclusive full-screen option these developers seems to be pushing, it breaks so much stuff for a minor convenience.

Not talking about this game, but something has to be going on with Windows 10 (I don't disable fullscreen optimizations). Because it's like it's converting borderless windowed fullscreen to some kind of exclusive fullscreen. Examples are PCSX2, where it triggers 3D Vision / G-Sync for me without needing SpecialK. Or Dead Cells, where borderless triggers 3D but exclusive fullscreen doesn't (probably needs a refresh rate override). And I've seen other non exclusive fullscreen games working in 3D (not all of them). All those examples are DX11, and DX11 shouldn't work in 3D unless it's in exclusive fullscreen. Meanwhile, other people can't get PCSX2 to trigger 3D as is, while other people can (Kaimasta, for example). Edit: Shantae and the Pirate's Curse didn't trigger 3D in W7, but it does now in W10. And I suspect Half-Genie Hero is the same, because 3D only triggers when game resolution and desktop resolution match.

Somethings definitely screwy with windows 10. Guild wars 2 was working fine, and now it won't launch but it still working properly on 7 again. I dread each update because I know something new will be broken regarding exclusive fullscreen modes.

Best strategy is to use Windows 10 Pro where you can delay feature updates 365 days. It also worked for me to delay them more than a year so I think you can disable them permanently with this feature. I only updated to Windows 10 v.1803 a short while ago because I needed the updated HDR feature for using with my projector and realized that lots of things are broken in Windows 10 now but somehow I can arrange with that currently. Of course another idea is to use Windows 7 but Microsoft does not want to support newer CPUs on it.

When i disable ambient occlusion the flicker goes away but i'm pretty sure ambient occlusion was working fine with the 1080. Maybe this will help you to tell me how fix this, game is a lot better with ambient occlusion on ! (i'm in dx 11 exclusive fullscreen) (in dx12 the game crashes in 3D)

I'm having the same issue as well with my 2080 Ti that I just got yesterday. Turning on Ambient Occlusion causes lot of flickering. I can also confirm that it was fine with the GTX 1080 with Ambient Occlusion turned on. With DX12, non-exclusive fullscreen, stereo 3D on, I was able to get it working on 416.16 driver, but it has occasional stuttering. However, this driver caused random artifacts to appear in Witcher 3 in 3D Vision, so I rolled back to 411.70 driver. Witcher 3 is fine now, but ROTTR crashes on the menu in DX12 with 3D Vision turned on. Overall, I have to say that ROTTR has been the most finicky in 3D Vision with the 2080 Ti. The rest of the games, including SOTTR are working all right (although SOTTR has rendering bottlenecks in some regions in DX11 leading to FPS drops).

In a way i'm glad to see i'm not the only one... i hadn't tried dx12 before downgrading to 411.70. Thanks for your input, i will revert to 416.16 and try dx12 Will wait until i have finished ROTTR (60% completed) before playing to the Witcher (50% completed so far) and thanks to you i now know i will have to roll back. FYI I have tried Assassin Creed odyssey and as expected it doesn't work in 3D Vision (5fps with the 2080ti...) If ROTTR doesn't work well enough in DX12 i'll wait for an update and will spend some time in Greece...

@cyrilp2, I made another detailed thread here for 3D Vision with RTX 2080 Ti: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1075861/3d-vision/state-of-3d-vision-and-performance-with-rtx-2080-ti/ Feel free to add your experiences as well. Hopefully, we can help find solutions for the issues everyone is potentially facing with the RTX 2080 Ti.
