Some expert advice on upgrading/3D memory usage

Do you think upgrading to gtx 980 can solve the stutter problem in 3D because the gtx 780ti is running out of memory?

No, I think this will have no effect on stutter in 3D because the cause is likely something else.
Yes, I think the stutter is caused by the gtx 780ti running out of VRAM in 3D.

Hey guys, I am looking for some good advice to understand if this upgrade is going to help me. Currently I'm sporting two gtx 780ti's with a hexacore intel cpu. I have noticed, for example, when I play AC Unity on 1080p on ULTRA with 4x msaa it runs perfectly smooth (60+ fps) with absolutely no stutter. Now when I turn on 3D (I know its 3D compatibility mode but lets put that aside for a minute) my fps is still solid around 60fps but I do get a little repeated stutter here and there. Now if you know me, you know my games must run perfectly at maximum graphical settings - that is what I game for - so I cannot stand stutter. I noticed that the 3GB VRAM on both my cards is getting fully utilized when running Unity in 3D which I assume is causing the stutter while fps are still good. This alone made me think about upgrading to gtx 980 because these babies have more VRAM. Now is this going to help? The 980s only have a 256-bit memory bus as compared to the 780ti but the 4 GB VRAM would cause VRAM not to run out. I am also looking at future games of course - always full candy and must be smooth in 3D vision too. I thought about a 3rd 780ti but that is not going to solve the problem (especially since 3-way doesnt work in 3d vision) and the VRAM is not shared. Is going gtx 980 my best solution? Is the 256-bit bus not going to cause any bandwidth issues? Why is it just 256-bit anyway compared to the 780ti? Trying to understand this before/if I proceed with upgrading. Many thanks for your expertise - Pat.

Unity is widely regarded as a poorly optimised game. I wouldn't buy new hardware and expect it to solve the problem. It might, but there's no guarantees.

It's not clear right now if Unity even runs properly with 3D enabled, so I wouldn't rush too much to get it smooth. Unity was clearly a rush for the season of overindulgence, and won't be fully debugged for at least 6 months. For this game, I think it's probable that the 3G is your limit and streaming textures would be the bottleneck. To see if that's true, lower the texture resolution to not require as much VRAM and see if the stutters are fixed. Not a guarantee of course, things are complicated. I'm not sure if the 256 bit bus is a real concern or not. I've read a lot of clearly stupid comments about it on the internet that say things like it cannot fill 4G of VRAM at all. The only real concern is when the bus comes into play, and whether it becomes the bottleneck. It's unlikely to be the bottleneck for regular game play. But, if you are not too price conscious, you could try SLI Titan Blacks. The reason to do that is to skip past the 4G limit on the 980s, and also the 256bit bus. Pricey, but if you want to be sure neither VRAM nor bus can impact your scenario, that would be the way to go. They are essentially 780ti cards with 6G of VRAM, and roughly comparable to 980s, depending upon the game.

Thanks a lot guys - I am obviously not just looking within the context of Unity but more as an overall concern. I have been giving the Titan Blacks some though actually but they are performancewise (from what I have seen in benchmarks) a bit weaker than 780ti or 980, with the only advantage being more memory and larger bus. I am definitely not willing to sacrifice performance just to get more VRAM, thats out of the question.

Just to offer another data point, I've gone from GTX580s to 980s lately, and there was no improvement on Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Far Cry 3. Stutter is there. (Did not try Unity yet) Worth noting that all the three games are Ubisoft, and all use community fixes for 3D. Without the fixes, the stutter seems to be reduced, but it's still there. The stutter on Ubisoft games is one of the biggest mistery in tech today, in my opinion. I've read e little bit on it, and the usual comments on the net are: - Games not optimised for PC - An in-game proprietary asset/texture streaming technique which is very poorly done - An unoptimised workflow for teh CPU, which makes it being bombarded by instructions, much more than would happen on other games - Hyperthreading isues (disable from BIOS if you can, to test it) So I would say, if you want to upgrade only for Ubisoft games, it's not worth it. Otherwise, up to you. For me it was easy, since my 580s were growing long in the tooth. But with the new cards taht Nvidia are preparing, it may be worth waiting for something more powerful or with more VRAM for future proofing, especially if you have good performance already in games such as Alien Isolation, Shadow of Mordor, Metro Last Light etc.

since unity patchs i find the game runs perfect in sli, i dont have any stutter. 2bh the only game i find stutters is farcry 4..
Even if it cures the stutter? Some slight drop in performance for a better experience?
Hey Bo3b, just curious. Since the OP seems to be focusing on stutter, and it has plagued me severely, are there any guarantees that any new or old cards such as you quoted are able to remove stutter in these games? Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe that the consensus on these forums seems to be that some degree of stutter, at least in these Ubisoft games, cannot yet be beaten, no matter how much GPU horse power we throw at it. Just to clarify your comment, which seems to imply that going to Titan Blacks would definitely solve it. (greatly hoping you meant "even if it might cure the stutter" - I would hate to start getting ideas that I need to upgrade my 980s to Titan Blacks so that I can finally go through the Black Flag story once more, stutter free :-) )

bo3b: Odd, I seem to recall seeing a few benchmarks where the 780ti was slightly faster at 1080p but looks you are right. If I sell the 780ti I may be able to upgrade to titan blacks in sli by throwing in an additional 400 bucks which is not too bad. I was looking more at the 980 simply because they are a bit faster (and newer) so was basically just concerned by their 256 bit bus. benji_gtx9800: you have no stutter at all in 2D or 3D mode? In 2d mode im also completely stutterless - it's just in 3D the memory usage seems to go up - which is strange since every card is supposed to run an instance of the game so I dont see why VRAM consumption is higher compared to 2D. I have yet to try 3d mode in far cry 4. I usually wont play it in 3D until we get a helixpatch anyways, but nevertheless it was an interesting observation in 3d compatibility mode. It is the first time I have encountered this kind of stutter ever (in 3D only) - admittedly the graphics are insane in Unity on ultra and definitely next-gen so it is obvious requirements go up. I still think it has nothing to do with optimization but with VRAM usage.

Zappologist: I find it strange that you have stutter in all the ubisoft games (in 2D I assume?). This is the first time I encounter this when switching to 3D and I have played many Ubisoft games on this machine. Have you checked your VRAM usage during gameplay? What CPU do you have? I noticed moving from quadcore to hexacore that ubisoft likes hexacore, regardless of what the benchmarks say I really had an improvement (maybe the switch toi pcie 3.0 also had some minor impact).

Performance measurement is a tricky business, and I used to do that type of work for my job. The upshot is that the bottleneck for a given problem is what is interesting. In this case, the assumption seems to always be that a faster GPU is what is necessary- when there are at least another 5 factors in a system that can introduce stutter. That's actually why I suggest Titan Blacks, because if it is caused by lack of VRAM, going to 980 is at best a short term fix, and at worst doesn't solve the problem. Titan Blacks are the only card you can get today with 6G. If it's CPU that's the bottleneck, then any GPU changes are irrelevant. For the Black Flag- try it again with the latest fix I updated. There was a nasty bug in 3Dmigoto that PirateGuyBrush helped me find, and fixes all the stutter we saw. The problem there was being CPU bound on occasion, and 3Dmigoto had a bug that used 3% of the CPU. Enough to make it stutter.

I never play 2d, so I was talking about 3D. Occasionally, for the games I mentioned, I tried them in 2D to see if the stutter was there. And indeed it was there, in all modern Ubisoft games (so I exclude pre-AC3 games). It may yet be that my issues are linked to something else in my configuration, but my findings seem in sync with what the gaming community at large is experiencing, as judged by the internet chatter (probably in 2D in most of the cases)

That's the reason the blacks were in the back of my head too and there are some for sale in my area. Upgrading is a hobby for me so I don't mind experimenting a bit. I am sure its not my cpu, I thought for some time I may need to get a 1GB SSD to install all my games on to minimize any loading times and prevent potential stutter from ever occurring, but having seen the VRAM consumption I was almost immediately convinced this may be the issue (for the first time). The 980 should really have had 6GB of ram and a 384 bit bus at minimum but I think we know why thats not the case.

The 980 should really have had 6GB of ram and a 384 bit bus at minimum but I think we know why thats not the case.

Yes Bo3b, I had indeed tried Black Flag with the most recent fix, before giving up on it and uninstalling. It was still stuttering. At this point, with SLI 980s, I'm willing to accept that I will probably not play any Ubisoft games before I upgrade the CPU and motherboard in the future (or before Ubi figures out what's wrong with their games) It's ok, I'm beginning to be fine with it, especially with you guys fixing so many other games, and I have great performance in all non-Ubi games, no matter how demanding they are (Last Light in 3D is simply stunning, same as open world Shadow of Mordor). But still, my upgrade to 980s is hands down the most disappointing upgrade I've ever done, in terms of performance gained. So I prefer to let my story known from time to time, so that people may understand that just going to more powerful cards will not solve stuttering (and by no means do I have an antiquated PC build - 3DVision 2 on Asus VG278H 27", SLI GTX980 Strix, i7-2600K 3.70GHz, 8GB RAM, Win7 64bit on Intel SSD)
