I think we're going to suffer a bit due to panel/pixel response times, but it's clear that BFI is the key and hopefully the other attributes of a large TV, i.e. price, HDR, contrast. etc. makes them a good compromise for 2d and 3d gaming.

Yes - but I specifically mean 120Hz BFI for a 120Hz input, the reason why I put that is because some of the TV's that support BFI have reduced BFI compatibility, so for example will only strobe at 60HZ even with a 120HZ input. Just a warning to check the small print :-)

I thought according to RTINGS that Sony did support 120Hz input? Unless RTINGS had to force it with a custom res as well.
You shouldn't need to use an EDID at all, as it's not a 3d display anyway.
Running at 1920x1080x120Hz desktop mode should allow you try test Generic CRT mode in the Nvidia 3d control panel.
This is exactly what I did with my OLED test. HDMI isn't a problem as long as 120Hz input is supported.

Yeah, I did a bunch of research after my last post and found out about CRT mode.
I believe RTINGS had to force it because per the following spec sheet, 120hz it is not listed: [url]https://docs.sony.com/release/specs/XBR55X850D_mksp.pdf[/url] I took RTINGS word and never checked the specs.
That being said, the TV does show it as 119hz when I plug and unplug the HDMI. I ran all of the setup tests but it did not seem to be working. I believe I read that the tests might not work correctly on windows 10 anymore. Is that correct? I have not tried a game yet after "falsifying" the setup tests though. Would 119hz cause an issue?

The setup tests do work on windows 10. Well, they did when I tried a few weeks ago.
I think quite a few people force 3d on/off via the registry, as the setup process can be a bit funny. But as long as the drivers and display settings are configured properly, the Nvidia control panel setup and test should work.

In real 3D, yes about 40/50% of GPU using. Plus the CPU sometime will limit your framerate but it does that in 2D too.
In fake 3D, the Compatibility Mode (CM), I don't know about framerate, it's garbage to me, low 3D and streched texture, can bear it, so not using it at all.

Yes with 3DTV Play (Nvidia), but not with 3DVision who uses Frame Sequential, but that's technical stuff.
- SBS lost half the resolution (twice as blur).
- 3DTV is limited by HMDI 1.4 stupid rules. (Nvidia never update their 3DVision drivers about that...)

Do set the 3D correctly in 3DVision, the goal is 100% (Depth) with some "jaillissement" (Convergence), about 20/30% off the screen for me, sometime less to avoid HUD conflict, I like HUD out off the screen (see in the d3dx.ini, from HelixMod patch, the lines about HUD if settable).

Don't use CM, prefer 3D fix, please. If the GTX1070 can get 50fps in 2D, you will be ok for Real 3D.
Thanks Dugom for the info. Mind elaborating on the 50fps being sufficient enough? That would only be 25fps per eye then correct? Does that equate to an experience similar to 25fps in 2d or does it still appear like 50fps. I ask because in a FPS I have a hard time playing below 60fps so I am wondering how this translates to real 3D as I have only played in SBS so far.
Also, how has your experience been with SLI? Do you notice any micro stuttering or other issues? It seems like a very divisive topic - some love it and some hate it i guess. I am working on getting another 1070 since I got the first one for dirt cheap from a friend who got a 2080.
And an update on the Sony X850D that I have been trying to get to work. I have had no luck so far. I confirmed that it is working at 119hz using the UFO test but the 3D is not working correctly at all. It seems like the glasses are not syncing correctly. Thanks Dugom for the info. Mind elaborating on the 50fps being sufficient enough? That would only be 25fps per eye then correct? Does that equate to an experience similar to 25fps in 2d or does it still appear like 50fps. I ask because in a FPS I have a hard time playing below 60fps so I am wondering how this translates to real 3D as I have only played in SBS so far.
Also, how has your experience been with SLI? Do you notice any micro stuttering or other issues? It seems like a very divisive topic - some love it and some hate it i guess. I am working on getting another 1070 since I got the first one for dirt cheap from a friend who got a 2080.
And an update on the Sony X850D that I have been trying to get to work. I have had no luck so far. I confirmed that it is working at 119hz using the UFO test but the 3D is not working correctly at all. It seems like the glasses are not syncing correctly. I do think this info gives all that's necessary - no 1080p@3D support but @SBS. NO! SBS does not send 3840x1080 or rather ... it depends ... if we talk about half or full sbs, if you do not ever see a note of full sbs ... it is half sbs we talk of ... which is most common so we talk about (2x960)*1080(prob at 2x60hz?). If you compare it to (lets say 1920x1080@60Hz you may!! see a very little speed up on very heavy first person shooter, but most probably a downscale in resolution).

Obviously DLP projectors are a great option but PC monitor tech seems stagnant and overpriced, so maybe a TV is the better option with HDR support etc. etc.

From what he has posted, I am very excited to try the 3d Glasses with the TV I posted. It has 120hz BFI (Black Frame Insertion) on game mode. Glasses should be in today so I will update once I try.
I think we're going to suffer a bit due to panel/pixel response times, but it's clear that BFI is the key and hopefully the other attributes of a large TV, i.e. price, HDR, contrast. etc. makes them a good compromise for 2d and 3d gaming.
Without testing it's going to be hard to know, but I wonder if the 120Hz BFI for a 120Hz input is going to be key for reducing crosstalk. I suspect it's going to be important.

Second, when using an active EDID, I am not able to get it to display 120hz. When using a passive EDID, I can get it to display at 120hz but then the IR emitter does not work since it thinks it is passive (I assume). I think this is because the computer thinks it is using dual DVI when using really it is HDMI 2.0.
So now I am back to the drawing board.
Extremely important. Without strobing, active 3D is almost as bad as not wearing the glasses.

Yes - but I specifically mean 120Hz BFI for a 120Hz input, the reason why I put that is because some of the TV's that support BFI have reduced BFI compatibility, so for example will only strobe at 60HZ even with a 120HZ input. Just a warning to check the small print :-)

I thought according to RTINGS that Sony did support 120Hz input? Unless RTINGS had to force it with a custom res as well.
You shouldn't need to use an EDID at all, as it's not a 3d display anyway.
Running at 1920x1080x120Hz desktop mode should allow you try test Generic CRT mode in the Nvidia 3d control panel.
This is exactly what I did with my OLED test. HDMI isn't a problem as long as 120Hz input is supported.

I believe RTINGS had to force it because per the following spec sheet, 120hz it is not listed: https://docs.sony.com/release/specs/XBR55X850D_mksp.pdf I took RTINGS word and never checked the specs.
That being said, the TV does show it as 119hz when I plug and unplug the HDMI. I ran all of the setup tests but it did not seem to be working. I believe I read that the tests might not work correctly on windows 10 anymore. Is that correct? I have not tried a game yet after "falsifying" the setup tests though. Would 119hz cause an issue?

I think quite a few people force 3d on/off via the registry, as the setup process can be a bit funny. But as long as the drivers and display settings are configured properly, the Nvidia control panel setup and test should work.
You need to try without any EDID. 119hz should be ok too I think. I seem to remember that being a funny windows quirk.
The key thing is that at the end of the setup, the test will activate which should light the led on the emitter and activate the glasses.
If the emitter doesn't activate then there's another issue.

I did not spend much time with it but when running the 3D setup utility, I did not even know it was working - that is how bad it was. While typing this I realized I think the depth was set to 75% which might be the cause of this. Is that possible? Any suggestions?
While the test was running, it appeared that the 3D perspective was changing every 3 or so seconds as well - not sure about that. The TV also has a few motion settings that I can tinker with to see of they make any difference and I will need to make sure it was in game mode. Not sure if the the Black Frame Insertion was working correctly either. I might try a high speed video capture from my cell phone although I am not sure what to look for or if I will be able to see it.
My next step is to run the 120hz UFO tests to make sure I am getting the 119hz then tinker with any other settings I can find.
I am not very optimistic but still hopeful.
Side note: Currently building a desktop with a 1070 which should help me get some more frames compared to my 1060 in my laptop (Non Max-Q). Is that going to be enough to play games in 3D? I have not tried any games in compatibility mode so I am interested to see how that works as well.
In real 3D, yes about 40/50% of GPU using. Plus the CPU sometime will limit your framerate but it does that in 2D too.
In fake 3D, the Compatibility Mode (CM), I don't know about framerate, it's garbage to me, low 3D and streched texture, can bear it, so not using it at all.
Yes with 3DTV Play (Nvidia), but not with 3DVision who uses Frame Sequential, but that's technical stuff.
- SBS lost half the resolution (twice as blur).
- 3DTV is limited by HMDI 1.4 stupid rules. (Nvidia never update their 3DVision drivers about that...)
- 3DVision is almost perfect, still limited to 120hz (60hz by eye).

Do set the 3D correctly in 3DVision, the goal is 100% (Depth) with some "jaillissement" (Convergence), about 20/30% off the screen for me, sometime less to avoid HUD conflict, I like HUD out off the screen (see in the d3dx.ini, from HelixMod patch, the lines about HUD if settable).

With the Nvidia IR emitter (pyramid) plugged, 3DTVPlay will works. If you wan't to use 3DTVPlay, and doesn't use the (Pyramid), you'll have to bought the software.

Usualy, just put the files from the patch in the game .exe folder.
Crosstalk/ghosting is mostly of the time hardware and comes from the 3D screens and the 3D glasses.
Do the rabbit test to set your TV the best way for 3D.
That's just advertising crap, the panel does not display 480hz... Most 2018 TV still does not get 120Hz input... (Tried with 2018 Samsung 75NU8005)
Don't use CM, prefer 3D fix, please. If the GTX1070 can get 50fps in 2D, you will be ok for Real 3D.
