That's exactly what Oculus is doing with the Rift. You don't want motion controls and/or room scale then don't buy it. Still don't know how good or bad room scale will be with the Rift but at least you have the option of saving a couple hundred.

In any case, Chet from Valve has said that they will show the ""next set of reveals and announcements to the SteamVR catalog in a few weeks at GDC." https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/48ybu7/chet_confirms_valve_preparing_for_next_set_of/ so I hope we get some cool new games announced. Oculus and Sony are going in full force to GDC, so I'm hoping Valve has something really good to show. Besides the have to promote Source 2 and what better than a Valve VR game.
Valve have to announce/release a game. GDC will be a 'roll out the big guns' for a last ditch effort to get people to cancel their rift orders and get a vive.
Could you imagine how msny rift preorders would be cancelled if they announced something big?
Imagine how many vive preorders will be cancelled if they didn't and oculus stole the show!
It has to be portal, perfect in a box game and they have had the VR portal demo out for how long?
Long enough to make an episode at least.
Steam has Origin, UPlay etc as competition but now has the windows store and oculus store to compete with. Gabe needs to take his vr helmet off and pull his finger out, pronto! :D
700 dollars for a "walking platform"??? ROFL... Because of crap like this VR will not be adopted as mainstream...
As a matter of fact, the more I see the more I think it will be a niche product even more than 3D Vision and 3D Monitors... and this is the optimistic me talking....

Well tbh, it would be solid at like $300/400. I would pay that easily over the oculus touch.
The omni is all corporate now and is probably looking for military contracts imo. Maybe in a few years it will be affordable.

Thats a bit over dramatic. Pretty much any game that runs at 60 FPS at 1080P Max this generation of card will run at full specs of either VR set on next generation card without AA. If you think about it that way you only half to wait a year 1/2 | 2 years.
Though tbh, could reduce settings. Could probably run it at medium settings without AA at 980/980ti.
Also not sure why people think they NEED 90FPS on non-vr titles. If your not playing a native VR game then you won't need headtracking and you can handle less fps.

My watercooled 980ti runs star wars battlefront at 60fps minimum, it dips to 56 on Endor map.
That's playing at 4K ultra with no AA.
An overclocked 980ti will destroy any VR game will come out with this year.
I'm hoping the games don't look too bad with low quality textures etc.
Does anyone know if the oculus store will allow mods like steam does or will it be locked down like the windows store?
I'm really tempted to ditch nvidia go AMD and cancel the rift preorder. Open standards are the way forward. Sick of these greedy corporations trying to control the market rather than win it fairly.
Where's all the news form nvidia and AMD regarding VR? It seems to have gone very quiet recently.
Steam are adding more and more titles everyday to the VR section of their store. The watch looks good for a laugh.

AMD actually announced the "GPUOpen Initiative" back in December.
The GPUOpen initiative provides access to a comprehensive collection of visual effects, productivity tools, and other content at no cost. Easily shareable and downloadable, GPUOpen enables developers to level-up code and unlock the full potential of software development.

"In a nutshell, AMD is releasing a slew of open-source software and tools to give developers of games, heterogeneous applications, and HPC applications deeper access to the GPU and GPU resources.

The thing that sucks about AMD is that they are hands off when it comes to 3D, they leave it up to 3rd parties. Which was basically only TriDef, unfortunately it is not looking very robust as of late.
It will be interesting to see if they take an in-house approach with VR and get a little more hands on with programmers and developers.

I have a Sixense Stem coming, all being well, after a more than 2 year wait as a Kickstarter. I really enjoyed using motion controls with the Hydra which I programmed on every game myself.
I also have a Virtuix Omni with a rack and cable boom coming after a more than 2 year wait as a pre-order when it was quite a bit cheaper. I like the idea of exercising a bit while playing games and you can play any game with it, it doesn't have to be VR.
I am also a Kickstarter for the VRGO chair for if I don't feel like exercising:)
For these reasons I have ordered a Rift because I think that the quality is better, the built-in headphones appeals to me and room-space games don't interest me very much.

Not sure if you've been following the whole "exclusive" Oculus thing on Reddit but it's looking like it's Valve/Steam that are actually the greedy ones.
Oculus EXCLUSIVES are only exclusive to the Oculus store and not the Rift headset itself. So, technically the HTC Vive can use the Oculus store, IF STEAM ALLOWED IT.
It makes no sense for Oculus to release it's games that it's funded on steam because why would they lose most of their profits by publishing on steam. That would not be very smart, especially in the early days of VR, when software sales will be fairly low compared to traditional games.
Palmer has said that he wants the HTC Vive to be able to access the Oculus store but HTC has not gotten back to them yet. They will most likely add the Vive to the Oculus SDK and it will most likely work.

Open standards are too lofty to be realistic.
Everyone does it. Playstation has exclusives, Xbox has exclusives, Nintendo IS exclusives.
By signing up with Playstation, Oculus, WHOMEVER you are able to fund a game that might not have otherwise happened. Street Fighter V would not happen without Playstation. Final Fantasy 7 remake would not happen without Playstation. Bayonetta 2 would not happen without Nintendo.
AMD's open standard talk..... is frankly bullshit. Mantle is a open sourced system right? EXCEPT its built on AMD architecture. Its guaranteed to run like crap on NVIDIA hardware. Of course they would love it if NVidia adopted it [which no way in hell].
----------------------------
Amd is not pushing open standards as being a good guy/moral/good business practice. They are pushing it because as far as PC gaming they hold 1/4 the market and can't go against NVidia besides by manufacturing cheaper cards.

Knock AMD if you want, but they've done a lot and are not exactly slouches.
They helped integrating portions of Mantle to Vulkan that allows low overhead.
They open sourced free-sync and got it added to the Vesa standard.
They offer Eyefinity, which supports way more end user configurations/choices
They offered unrestricted access to Quad Buffering once HD3D was announced, which I think lead to Nvidia finally doing the same sometime later.
[s]They supported HDMI 2.0 long before Nvidia[/s] They supported 1920x1080@120Hz via HDMI long before Nvidia
[s]They supported 4K tvs long before Nvidia[/s]They supported 4K Tvs long before Nvidia via HDMI at 30Hz or Dual Input for 60Hz
They offered the ability to select the appropriate color range for displays, long before Nvidia
I will agree that it sucks that their architecture is so different, which leads to optimization issues if the game developer favors them over Nvidia. AMD Radeon also has their share of driver and performance issues.
I just wish NVidia would step up their game and stop being so slow to add and support features.
Edited to correct my mistakes as pointed out by Whyme466

If Oculus wants to compete with Steam as a gaming platform, well good luck to them, they sure are going to need it lol. Oculus surely have the hardcore under their belt, but the average joe will want their VR games on steam for sure.
Meanwhile Steam has Vive ads everywhere, so 125 million users are watching that everyday, that kind of advertising is huge. It sure looks like it had an impact already, since according to Google Trends https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=htc%20vive%2C%20oculus%20rift both Oculus and Vive are being searched nearly the same right now.

I am not knocking AMD, nor any other company. I am saying that "open-standard" is a pipe dream to a company that is at advantage in a competitive market.
People are saying AMD maintains Open standard for "good reasons."
Absolutely not. Nvidia charges vendor for support of Gsync/3d vision display/whatever. Why, because they can and more profits can lead to lower costs of cards for consumers which in turn will lead to more sales.
Does AMD charge vendors for Freesync/whatever. No. Because they don't control the market and they WANT vendors to adopt there display so insofacto a consumer will buy it. AMD is not at that point, they care more about ADOPTION then anything.
I as a matter of fact WISH AMD the best. The more conflict thats between two companies the greater the consumer benefits.
----------------
If things get serious between HTC Vive/ Oculus - THATS WHERE INOVATION HAPPENS. Funding of there own studios like sony/microsoft do. Hardware/software advancements, etc.
Conflict has ALWAYS been the greatest motivator of technological advancement.

They supported HDMI 2.0 long before NvidiaThey supported 1920x1080@120Hz via HDMI long before NvidiaThey supported 4K tvs long before NvidiaThey supported 4K Tvs long before Nvidia via HDMI at 30Hz or Dual Input for 60HzThey offered the ability to select the appropriate color range for displays, long before Nvidia
I will agree that it sucks that their architecture is so different, which leads to optimization issues if the game developer favors them over Nvidia. AMD Radeon also has their share of driver and performance issues.
I just wish NVidia would step up their game and stop being so slow to add and support features.
