Nvidia - Please make new 3D glasses model The current ones could be SO much better...
  1 / 2
First, I love playing games, and watching the occasional movie, with 3D vision on my big DLP (well, big compared to most screens, not necessarily for DLPs lol). As far as the 3D effect goes, its pretty much exactly what i was hoping for before i got it, almost a year ago. The battery life is fantastic, and the ability to play while charging them is cool too. very pleased as far as performance goes. of course, i'd like to see some better compatibility with certain games, more convergence in the set 3d-ready profiles of some games, as well as software features such as convergence/depth presets with bindable hotkeys per game (so you can quickly toggle between them when going to different camera views, like going from combat to dialog in a bioware game) but yeah, still good overall.

But there is one thing i just hate more than anything else, and thats the stiff, uncomfortable, plastic glasses. They are "one size fits some" and the "fully adjustable" part is just BS, since the only thing you can adjust for is nose sizes. This is nowhere near as important as being able to adjust for HEAD sizes. I'm not sure if these glasses were designed to comfortably fit a child, or maybe a smaller asian person, but they pinch my head so hard above my ears that i get headaches just from wearing them for more than 3-5mins. At first i thought it was the 3D effect that was giving me a headache, but its just the glasses. So many of my friends, who have tried my setup out, have the same exact complaint (and before i say anything about it). I have to wear them at a weird angle, with the lenses tilted downward, so that the arms of the glasses press on my skull above my hears rather than on the soft skin right above them. This gives me a lot of glare from the ceiling and wall behind me, distorts the picture slightly, and reduces the field of view within the glasses.

On top of that, despite taking very good care of the glasses (as i do with all my expensive electronics, as well as the prescription glasses i've owned for nearly a decade) there has been some considerable wear and tear on them somehow. The cheap, green rubber tips on the arms both started to come off somewhere around the 6-month mark of ownership. This, i'm sure could be due to how tightly they fit my head. I always handle them gently and keep them in their pouch in a drawer between uses tho, so its not like my cat was chewing on it or something. So now, the tips are even harder and pointier and more uncomfortable. I think i'm going to wrap some electrical tape around them or something, cause man they hurt. Also, even tho the pegs are still all intact, no matter which nosepiece i put on, it seems like its always half-way off when i take the glasses off. Again, i have only changed nosepieces once or twice, and have done nothing unusual to them to cause this sort of wear.

PLEASE, design some new glasses, or at least frames. I've been planning on buying some more glasses so tha ti can watch 3D stuff with other people, like out of this years tax refund maybe. but i really really dont want to buy more of these horribly designed glasses. I would LOVE to see glasses that are designed more like real glasses and not like childrens sunglasses. Ones with narrower, possibly metal frames, with arms that are longer (maybe even able to slide in/out to be truly FULLY ADJUSTABLE) and able to flex outward a bit, like most real glasses. And ditch the whole nosepieces thing, its more trouble than its worth in most peoples opinions. Why not just have the bendable adjustable nose pieces like real glasses? I understand that the glasses have to be bulky in some areas, to house the battery and IR receiver and stuff, but why cant it just be more like a small box attached to the outside of an otherwise normal, slimmer frame? Also, maybe some larger lenses to increase the field of view within the glasses. Sure, they would look even dorkier, but this is about creating an enjoyable 3D experience, not about winning any fashion awards (with the current ones definitely do not anyway).

So yeah, please make new glasses that are more comfortable for your biggest consumer group (adult males), so that i can give these glasses to someone who can wear them semi-comfortably (my stepson).

Everyone, feel free to sign this unofficial "petition" if you share the same feelings.

Same feeling dude.

I'd like to buy a second pair for my wife, but I've also been waiting for a new design. I tested some brands of 3dtv glasses at best buy and they were way more comfortable, adjustable, and even had bendy frames like you suggest. Definately definately room for improvement...definately. (Kmart sucks ray.)

I agree. If you have a larger head the glasses are quite uncomfortable. Also, as Steiner said, the 3D tech inside the glasses is fine. It is surely a matter of redesigning the frames then. If I remember correctly, the arms of glasses I have seen shipped with Panny TVs seem to have more curved design allowing them to flex according to head shape. Why can't the next generation of nVidia glasses be designed that way?

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

They should just let other manufacturers use their protocol, we'd still need the IR emitter.
I've tried the XPands and I agree in gerenal they are a lot more comfortable than the NVidia glasses.

It's gettin to the point where i'm thinking about cutting both the arms just behind where the bulge of the battery/IR is. Ya know, where the glasses are really wide, before they taper in insanely. And then fasten some sort of straight arm onto it, without the headache-pinch design. Or maybe just attach a headband and turn them into goggles, but th is would probably be annoying as well. Argh, it sucks!

Ummm, actually that's critical to everyone who wears glasses.

Sounds like you need to pad the pinch. Here's a crazy idea... get a washcloth, fold it once, and put it between the glasses and the side of your head. Make sure the glasses don't fall on the floor or anything. Does that feel better? If so, get another and try it on both sides.

P.S. I've got forks for all of you! /wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> (Obscure Elder Scrolls joke.)

Similar exp with me, 3 month use mark the rubber bits fell-off on the arms (normal use, very OCD with my gear, never abused), i can't be the only one who use these with a head set?, given the price of these in Australia $200+ i would not expect this of a top end product! :(
The overall design could do with some improving, in particular the arms, as i can not get the rubber bits to stay on now (wear & tear i guess) the exposed tips are very weak and looking like prone to breaking. I shouldn't have to resort to McGyver tricks to fix it!

Slightly larger lens real estate and some lens scratch resistant technology would be great in future models.
The nose bridge adjustments are good, other than that the glasses are functional.
Ideally i would take the NV's lens and stick them in a pair of 'OAKLEY'(FUEL CELL) or something similar, please look to OAKLEY for inspiration in comfort.

Did i mention $200+, back to the drawing board NV, the flimsy plastic is leaving a bitter after taste.

Here +1 to this idea. I think the glasses can be lighter and less plastic. Also design is something "freak" and ugly in my opinion, I prefer nobody see me when using. Good point for the battery life. Bad point for the nose, that in my case the little plastic piece scape from this place continuosly, and not enough confortable.

Also I think it would be a good idea to think about to make a variation of glasses with "clip" to adapt to normal glasses (of course lighter than now).

Yeah, best thing I've found to do is lift the glasses up above the headphones, so instead of resting on your ears, they're resting on your headphones. Depends how big your headphones are though I guess.

I totally agree with you brother. Nvidia needs to hire some designers from Samsung/Silhouette: http://gear.ign.com/articles/114/1142634p1.html

I haven't tried it on Nvidia glasses, but I do adjust optical frames for a living.

Give someone a hair dryer and have he or she hold it so the hot air blows towards the middle bridge of the glasses, while you hold the arms apart equally with very little tension. The heat will slowly warm the middle bridge plastic and soften to allow it to expand gently while you slowly apply more tension pulling apartwise. Depending on the heat and the density of the plastic, this might take a couple minutes or so. Please make sure the plastic does not get too hot and melt the plastic. Be patient and apply heat in small patches if need be. Try to project the hot air away from the actual lenses as much as possible, meaning, tilt the glasses top-down instead of towards you. Good luck!

I like the glasses. I even like the nose piece, even when it's coming apart it fits very good, It can go from the bottom of my nose to the top and never itches, hurts or something. I like these glasses very much .

2 things concern me,

- sometimes I used paper to clean them. This might be bad for the plastic?

- I heard when they use polarizer on glass instead of plastic foil that is very expensive. So , glass shutter certainly not plausible as I won't pay thousand dollars for it.

But I'd pay 500-1000 dollars for a micromechanical shutter with high transmittance and LC killer timing parameters.
