if anyone are still wondering or doubting if this isn't a real 3d stereoscopic trailer, here's a test (which could be used with any video):

1. Open the video in the stereoplayer, put the right image first, and play it in fullscreen with your glasses on (of course);
2. Now, when something or someone appears closer to the screen, pause the video (space);
3. Close one of your eyes;
4. Swap the views (with F7 key) several times;
5. If the video is in true 3d stereoscopic format, you'll see that the perspective will change in a satisfactory way, without any glitches or anything else;
6. Convince yourself that the video is/isn't in true 3d.
3D films for the cinema will always look like this in the home. You have to expect that from every 3D film that will be released. The bigger the screen, the bigger the depth. Because filmmakers don't want to cause headaches they use a very little seperation. They have to stay in the so-called "comfort area". I made a chart that will explain why:

As you see the depth increases with screen size.
I've thought about this but still have trouble getting my mind around it. If you assume there is no room for adjustment you end up with basically that graphic you have. It's clear that you'll get less perceived depth.

But if you adjust the left/right images to be so far apart the 2d screen that you're looking at can be made closer or further away, right? So if I move the left frames a little left and the right frames a little right a 2d screen would appear to be further away than my monitor. I'm just not sure how that affects the depth of 3d video,... Since you're effectively moving the screen further away (but not really).

I agree, i don't understand so many hype with this movie. Almost every 3d effect is post production like some other movies, and totally flat (Xpand version at least), half movie is pure 2D. Even Alice looks better (...talking about pop-out).

For me it was a bit different. I was a console gamer up until the night I saw Avatar in IMAX 3d. It was my first 3d experience and it blew my mind. On the way home it hit me that my DLP had claimed to be 3d-ready, so I made up my mind to do whatever it would take to get 3d running at home. Well $2600 later I now have a sweet computer, and a 3d vision kit...I will never play games in 2d ever again! Games are awesome in 3d, and I prefer to play at 100% depth.

So I guess when I think about Avatar in 3d I romanticize it a bit because it set off sweeping changes in the way I game. I am curious to see how I will view the 3d effects when Avatar finally comes to 3d bluray, after playing so many great s3d games, maybe I'll change my mind and give it a big "meh." But for now I still have fond memories of my introduction to the world of s3d.

Thats exactly what i thought about the whole film at the cinema too, really crap 3d! Final destination 4 was alot better 3d experience for me.

Haha, my experience was nearly exactly the same. I have seen 3D movies plenty of times at IMAX, but I saw the 15 min clip of Avatar at IMAX in like.. October 09 I guess and it slowly ate at my wife and I about how visceral the experience was. It made a big impact. Next thing I know I'm reading these forums everyday and she orders me the glasses for our anniversary. I started with a CRT first then upgraded to a DLP PJ. A new CPU ($120), glasses kit ($200) and a pj and screen ($500), I've gone from a 100% console gamer to about 75% PC gamer 25% console gamer all because of 3D.

Controlling the convergence doesn't change the actual depth. It simply shifts the depth area. If you push the two images (left and right) further apart the depth area will shift away from you. But convergence is an artistic element, so no filmmaker would change that for a Bluray Release. Honestly I found Avatar to have a lot wrong convergence settings which resulted in stereoscopic window violations. So, I wouldn't mind if they would change that. :rolleyes: (but I doubt that)

How is the 3D effect made in post production? The low depth is simply due to the little seperation. Stereoscopy is not always about the "WOW"-effect. I don't get it. Maybe here and there, it's cool, but I would hate always having scenes popping out the screen.

Crap 3D? Except for the stereoscopic window violations avatar had the best use of stereoscopic 3D I've seen so far in cinema, and I've seen a lot of 3D films. We have to keep in mind that always using negative parallax is very stressful for the viewer. And I have to disagree with Final Destination 4. Sure it had some pop-outs in comparison to Avatar, but it certainly also uses a little seperation. Look at this screenshot:

It all comes down to the screen size. Like I already stated, I produced a 3D motion picture myself for 8 months and we used relativly huge seperation, due to technical reasons. The image looks great on a normal monitor or even on a home projector but it would never work on a cinema screen. The huge depth would give the audience a headache.
