Asus PG278QR - severe ghosting/crosstalk in some games
  1 / 5
This one is for all you Asus PG278QR owners! I am using the PG278QR as an external monitor with my new Alien 17 R4 notebook so I can game in 3D vision when not at home (the monitor is located at my girlfriend's appartment). Although the PG278QR is known as the king of 3D Vision capable 1440p monitors especially because it has nearly no ghosting/crosstalk I am facing pretty severe ghosting in some games. I now would like to know what's your experience in that regard. Do you really have nearly zero ghosting in ALL the games you have tried so far or did you also run into some games where the PG278QR has severe ghosting? When playing Witcher 3 it is a nearly ghosting-free affair for me. But when playing Just Cause 3 I am facing pretty severe ghosting. The same goes for the newly released WWE 2K18. When using my 24" Acer GN246HL 1080p monitor at home I notice not nearly as much ghosting. Could it really be I have a faulty unit? Could it be I messed up the settings and just have to fiddle with the settings to get rid of the ghosting? Are there some specific settings that need to be set to minimize the ghosting? Should I activate the 165Hz Boost-mode or leave it unchecked? What about overall brightness and contrast? (If I remember right brightness can't be manually set when in 3D mode)? I would really like to know about your experience with the PG278QR strictly regarding crosstalk/ghosting. Is it really ghosting free for you in ALL games or does it differ from game to game with some pretty bad examples of ghosting in specific games while others are performing fine? Anyone here who tried different units of the PG278QR and noticed differences regarding the ghosting?

Could you be more specific regarding JC3, I mean day/night/sea/ect.. Then I'll check it out !

Great Blacksmith! just did a comparison today with my Acer GN246HL again and now I am pretty sure something is definitely wrong. The differences are huge concerning ghosting not only in Just Cause 3. With the PG278QR there is ghosting all over the place. Ghosting is definitely stronger during bright "day-scenes" and of course less noticeable during night or generally dark scenes. When looking at the horizon where a mountain is located it's like another mountain is located next to it (not as solid of course). When looking at a black gate that is attached to a white building wall I also notice the black gate on the white building wall. When looking at the front part of a car I also notice that car's front part also on the lawn where the car is parked. If the car has white colour I also notice the outlines of the car door on the car's paint. When looking at a pole I also notice that pole left and right of the actual one. Ghosting is really strong for me with the PG278QR and since most guys are saying that this monitor is practically ghosting-free I am starting to think if something else is responsible for this amount of crosstalk. Maybe it has something to do with the Alienware 17 R4 - PG278QR connection. Tomorrow I will connect the PG278QR to my desktop-PC at home just to see if the scenario has any impact on the crosstalk-matter. Thanks for your help! P.S.: Maybe I can take some screenies tomorrow so you can see for yourself what it looks like!

Not sure where this "Practically no ghosting" thing started with this monitor. Yes, it typically quite good compared to other ones I have seen, but I have always found this a pretty outrageous claim. Maybe slightly better than the first edition. (which I have two with the new one in surround) Can be mitigated by turning the brightness right down, but it's pretty noticeable on any high contrast scenes, the sky especially. I also find it's helpful to play in a dark room. Certain games are worse than others, Witcher 3 for example is almost non existent until you look at the sky, and GTAIV is atrocious. It's just something I have got used too.

In my experience, the PG278QR is better than the BenQ XL2411Z, and A LOT better than the Dell S2716DG, ergarding crosstalk. But it isn't perfect. In situations with very dark + very bright colors there will be crosstalk, and the rest of transitions are very very good. In other cases, you'll see some crosstalk in skies interacting with other objects when you move the camera, but it will disappear if you stop moving it for one second (I don't know how they do that. It's like beneficial image retention). Also, the vertical scanlines effect (a lot less strong than in the Dell S2716DG) can show some slight artifact from the image of the other eye. Not exactly crosstalk. If your contrast is 50 (the original value that sometimes causes extra crosstalk), turn it down to 42. It may have sounded like a negative review, but it's the best 3D monitor I have used by a big margin. With the Dell monitor, I sometimes thought "is this a broken shader that I have to fix, or just crosstalk?". With the PG278QR, it doesn't happen anymore. The resolution looks better than 1080p monitors (because it is. It's a fact :p), and real 8 bit colors are noticeable even for a mild protan (not too bad color blindness) like me.

I'm glad you appear to be satisfied with it Masterotaku. I tried to be tempered with my recommendations of it, and I pretty much 100% agree with your assessment, as it's my experience with it too. Brightness contrast light boost settings are critical. Unfortunately at this stage there really is no perfect solution for 3D, but I feel with monitors there never really is at this point anyway

It seems I indeed have a faulty unit! Yesterday I couldn't resist and ordered another unit for comparison. The difference is very noticeable. With the exact same settings my unit has ghosting all over the place while the unit that arrived this morning only has very minor ghosting. Since I tested it with the exact same scenes in Just Cause 3 and WWE 2K18 the results should be pretty valid. So it seems the inconvenient truth with the PG278QR is that it can be different in a significant way from unit to unit concerning crosstalk. I also remember one other guy who posted his opionion about the PG278QR on this forum and he also said that he was pretty satisfied with the monitor overall beside ghosting which for him was more pronounced on the PG278QR. I guess he also got one of those faulty units. Thanks guys for your help!

Sorry for being late Lohan, my family claimed my precence:/ And sorry to hear that you got a faulty unit:/ I have been through a varity of saves /locations in JC3 and I haven't more crosstalk here than in other games ! No problem Blacksmith! I guess my naming of Just Cause 3 has been a little misleading. I was just referring to Just Cause 3 because I am currently playing the game. The crosstalk issue is valid for every game that I play but in some games like Witcher 3 you just don't notice it as much as the game is generally a lot darker. Of course I will keep the unit I got this morning and will get rid of the faulty one. @TimFx7 I guess the problem here has nothing to do with the monitor's need to warm up. When I tried the new unit fresh out of the box it instantly was performing dramatically better in terms of crosstalk/ghosting.
You'll see some crosstalk in skies interacting with other objects when you move the camera, but it will disappear if you stop moving it for one second...
I noticed this as well while staring at the sky in Witcher 3 one day. It feels like synchronicity related somehow. If you leave the camera in position it will fade into a perfect image like some sort of mirage within milliseconds. (mine seems more like below half a second.) As for warm up theory. I guess that's something to look at if the monitor is not almost always on... I have not noticed any artifacting issues but I do have an issue it seems with wierd Vsync tearing in certain games with SLI over a certain frame rate which can be quite uncomfortable but usually mitigated by capping the frame rate to 59hz. (guild wars 2, Dragons Dogma) but I'm not even sure if the monitor is a factor here. Still, I am very happy with mine. Definitely the best 3D vision monitor I have tried. It's very interesting and somehow disturbing that lohans replacement was that much better, it's not something you can easily tolerate variance on. But masterotaku's description in this post sounds very familiar XP I also returned my first one due to a cluster of dead pixels.

I'll try to upload some screenies I made today with the faulty unit! While the ghosting is definitely visible in all of those screenies it appeared much more pronounced to me when I was actually "in the game"..... Edit: Dumbest idea I ever had! When I took the screenies this morning when the faulty monitor was connected I could clearly see the severe ghosting. Now that my good old - ghosting-free - Acer is connected I no longer notice any ghosting at all in those screenies. So it seems pretty pointless to attach the screenies here!

The only way to show it would be taking a picture with a camera/phone from inside one of the glasses. I did it twice and it showed crosstalk alright, similar to real life. You will be pretty limited to what area of the monitor you will show, if you want to capture all detail possible.

I have to revoke my comment about my faulty unit. Today I tried my new PG278QR (the one that I thought performed well out of the box) for the first time connected to my Alienware and again got ghosting all over the place in Just Cause 3. So it seems BOTH units perform exactly the same. Took the monitor back home and reconnected it to my desktop PC...again...ghosting all over the place. Remembering that I really didn't do something special when it performed well 2 days before I just tried it a little longer this time and to my surprise the ghosting slowly disappeard to nearly zero. So maybe the PG278QR has indeed to warm up a little (see TimFx7's comment above). Since I am currently at a checkpoint in Just Cause 3 where you always start in bright sunlight (that's the point where I noticed the severe ghosting) that means the monitor is usually barely running for 2 minutes before this scene is loaded. Maybe this high contrast scene coupled with the fact that it is usually loaded just seconds after I turned on the Alienware and the monitor (the monitor is located in a rather cold room) are the reason for the severe ghosting. Darker scenes in Just Cause 3 like late afternoon, evening or night are always practically ghosting-free. To me it seems like everything is working normally (with the old and the new unit) but the combination of those suboptimal circumstances got me thinking. I will put up some screenies here, that I took right after I loaded the game (which I did right after I turned on the Alienware and the PG278QR). P.S.: While the monitor seems to be great overall there is one thing that really bothers me. I found exactly one review where this issue is mentioned. The PG278QR's panel is totally matte. I know a TN-panel is always on the more matte side of things but the PG278QR is especially matte (compared to my Acer GN246HL) Since the Acer XB271HU has the same "issue" I am really tempted to try out the Dell S2716DG. The Dell S271DG doesn't have such a matte display but then every review has stated that the PG278QR is superior to the Dell in almost every aspect. Also judging from the comments on this forum the Dell seems to have bigger problems with vertical scanlines and pixel-inversion. So I guess it wouldn't be such a great idea to try out the Dell. Or did the Dell S2716DG get any revision/updates down the road that mitigated these issues?
