I'm a long time steoroscopic game player and have always been a Nvidia graphics cards owner (since it started to provide 3D driver). Due to other life interruptions I had been away from this my favorite pastime for the past 4 years until recently. Now that I just moved in a new house with a good size loft I've picked up the Benq w1070 and on the verge of upgrading my video card for gaming in 3D.
Currently I got 2 Geforce 285 ,way old, I know, and a Samsung 61in DLP TV. 3D Vision on this setup had been a bliss 4 years ago and probably will still be now, except I've moved the TV into my bedroom and gaming in there, beside being inconvenient and not at all relaxing, is not a good option compared to the loft with a 120in screen.
So I'm thinking of upgrading my video card to game with the Benq in 3d, between Gtx 770 and Radeo 7970, but I'm really not sure since I've been out of touch with 3D gaming for a while, would really appreciated your opinions on the pros and cons as well as your personal choice had you been on the same upgrade decision as mine. I know this is a Nvidia forum, but the folk from Nvidia appears to let 3D Vision be on its own, so please also take that into your suggestion consideration.
Cheers.

The 7970 would be a better choice for 2D gaming using multiple monitors via eyefinity. Or, 2D gaming on a 4K HDTV. But the only place the 7970 would beat the GTX 770 for 3D gaming would be dual passive projection, since Nvidia doesn't support it on GTX cards.
For stereoscopic gaming 3D Vision is better than TriDef or AMD HD3D, because games toyify better and there's less of a performance hit.

Definitely the 770. AMD/Tridef don't have the same depth of support for games, and there's no community patches for games that don't work in 3d (as far as I'm aware).

While the AMD cards are usually faster for the money, if you want 3D they are the wrong place to look. AMD's 3D is completely useless, I wouldn't even bother with it at all, if you want 3D just go with Nvidia.

Tridef ignition works well with amd for that matter. Tridef also works better than nvidia in 3d(not counting the great unofficial support from Helix and co, who knows for how long they will go on). Since nvidia evidently doesn't care for any of their 3d-users, go for anything else than nvidia.

I think you have to count the unofficial mod support for Nvidia 3D. It's there, it makes a big difference. You should be able to use Tridef on an Nvidia card with your W1070 as well if you wish to.
I think Nvidia is clearly the better option for 3D.

Go for anything else than nvidia? Total nonsense. Nvidia right now, and almost certainly for the next few years, is the best option for 3d by far. The OP can always use Tridef as well if he wants. Please don't start another complaining whiny thread about nvidia, we've heard it all before.

I think that you should get the GTX 770. I have that same projector and it's great, it works like a charm with nvidia 3dtv play. You'll do just fine with one card for 720p 3d gaming and of course 2d gaming, and you can always use 1080p at 24hz too. Tridef 3d works better with AMD, but the W1070 only works on tridef at 1080i and 24hz, so it's an inferior experience vs nvidia 3dtv play. Besides, overall tridef is inferior to 3d vision / 3d tv play, and their only advantage, better support for recent dx11 games, is no more after helix and chiri released their wrappers that help fixing dx11 games on 3d vision.
If you choose the nvidia upgrade, your first stop should be helixmod.blogspot.com.es , there you will find tons of patches that makes lots of games perfectly playable in 3d.

Your not proving a point. Just giving bad advice.
Your letting bitter turn into toxic.
Seriously listen to yourself. NVIDIA does some pretty terrible things, I agree.
What has AMD ever done for 3D? Tridef's accomplishments are not AMD's.
Seriously, if NVIDIA offered to support Passive projector set up. Would you turn it down? I cant imagine you hang out in this forum for any other reason.
I use Windows 7.... doesn't mean I take back massages from Microsoft......

The thing is that Helix patches add perfect 3d to dozens of games, you can ignore it if you want, but it's a fundamental reason to choose Nvidia over AMD if you want to play in 3d. 3d vision is 10x times better than any AMD solution thanks to those patches, so recommending AMD to someone who wants to play in 3d is nonsense.

Chose AMD 3D /Tridef and shoot in the leg happily after ^_^ (pun intended but no offense)
I have been an AMD fan (and still am) for CPUs. From '99 till last year I used only AMD's Cpus. I still find them awesome for the price. But no SLI and no extreme performance on them.
As a matter of fact SLI started on AMD CPU's and not Intel and I was one of the adopters in the good old days (around 2003 can't actually remember the exact year) on my AMD platform.
nVidia basically invented the GPU. nVidia had the stereo 3D solution on CRT monitors only to die with the apparition of LCDs. Now they re-invented it.
AMD took 2 YEARS to basically try to REPLICATE what nvidia did in 2009. I tried the AMD H3D solution and it's avg at best.
Probably you will say I am a nVidia fanboy, but I would disagree.. I simply know what to buy and what the hardware is (and history plays a role in the quality of hardware & software as does motivation)
Currently 3D Vision is superior for number of reasons:
1. Implementation: Shutter glasses with 120hz screens aka active stereo 3D. The best solution out there where AMDs is a mix (but most oriented to PASSIVE solutions with less quality overall)
2. HelixMOD (Yes! even is COMMUNITY patched it gives superior stereoscopic than any Tridef/AMD H3D I have seen)
To be fair, I give credit to AMD for Eyefinity (multi-monitor support). They basically invented it! and nVIdia followed them! Still you see alot (more than 50%) of games not supporting this. Like HelixMod I create mods to enable proper multi-monitor rendering. I could lock it to nVidia only via NVAPI, but what is the point. If AMD/Tridef would work the same way 3D Vision does HelixMOD would work for AMD gear, but it doesn't (and you can see it in the quality of their 3D and performance)
I will not go in the Crossfire vs SLI debate since is off-topic, but SLI proves to be "less problematic" than Crossfire from I am let to believe (haven't made tests myself on crossfire)
So bottom line, Chose 3D Vision. Now we even have 2 wrappers for DX11 that will allow us to mod the games so 3D Vision will live long!

Somehow I'm not surprising with the overwhelming votes for Nvidia. Thank you to all who replied.Tbh, I was 60/40 for Nvidia/AMD prior to this thread.
A question for benq w1070 owners: can it be override with EDID so that 3D vision regcognises it for 3d gaming? Has anyone had it done personally?
The topic is mainly discussed on http://3dvision-blog.com/forum/ / http://3dvision-blog.com/8483-how-to-install-edid-override-inf-monitor-drivers-in-windows-8/
Its not really "allowed" to be openly talked about here [not that I care]. If you dont find anyone say anything here. Look there to see if anyone did it already.
Though it may be supported by 3D TV Play [you need to check] which means no 3d vision glasses.
Thanks. I was over there earlier but found no personal account or any confirmation on the 1070 being overriden sucessfully. Will continue looking for possible missed posts. I was skimming thru and did a search on topics but didn't see what I was looking for.
