GTX470 or GTX460 ?
Hi,

Another post seeking advice...

I have 2 x 8800 GT running in SLI currently but it's about time to upgrade, especially if I'm going down the 3D vision path..

768MB GTX 460's are about £150 a piece.
1GB GTX 460's about about £180 a piece.

You can get a Zotax GTX470 for £235 at the moment..

I'm going to buy either the Acer or the new Asus ~23" monitors for playing in 3D, but I'm completely torn on what VGA card(s) to get.

Should I just buy the kit and monitor and soldier on with the 8800s, or should I buy one 470 now and wait to SLI with another in future?

I've kind of ruled out the 768MB 460 so was looking at the 1GB version, but given the prices it's even tempting to buy 2 x 768MB GTX460s now but I have no idea about the relative performance of all of the above in 3D vision stuff..

Too many options so any opinions welcome!

Thanks.

if you are going 3D then you want as much graphics muscle as you can get as you are effectively going to be halfing your framerate. ideally you want two gtx 480's but sadly you wuld mos tlikely have to sell a few organs to afford that.

I recently ordered two 1gig gtx 460's as they beat a gtx 480 in most tests i have seen, but i am not going 3D and havent seen any 3d benchmarks.

in your shoes, if you know that you are able to, the best situation would be to get a gtx 470 (which will creme your current setup as it is) and then pick up an extra to boost your performance later on when prices come down.

Another vote for Gtx 470.. It's much better than the 460's and you can just get a 2nd down the road..

I can't wait until I'm done with college. So I can cure this empty wallet syndrome, that college has caused.

Thanks for the advice. All food for thought.

I'm pretty sure I'm just going to get 1 GTX470 for now as it is a more powerful architecture and has a larger frame buffer.
My only concern is if Nvidia drop the 470/480 and stop optimizing drivers somewhere down the line. I'm a bit worried that they'll focus on the GTX460/GF104 and people with the older cards might get forgotten about.. Anyway, time to take the plunge I think.
Cheers!

Yeah i'd vouch for the Gtx470, mainly for future proof ability.

It is true tho that 2 460's are as good as a Gtx480 tho lol.

And about nvidia dropping the 480 well i'd personaly think that would never happen, well not at least for another 3-4 years but apprently (now these are only rumors) there is a GTx485 coming out soon-ish.

Ive just recently upgraded from two 8800Gtx to a gtx480 Amp. :P Huge improvements in most games.
