THIS is why we DID NOT want Dev support, Deus Ex will be first of many

I have been gaming in 3D for 2 years now and have so far seen minimal benefits of the dev being on board with 3D. TBH it is often dreadful with locked convergence etc. I have also mentioned it can be risky. WE DO NOT NEED DEV SUPPORT!
Now Eidos has, it appears, locked 3D for ATI users only. I really REALLY hate to say it but I was right. Graphic card PR wars will result in AAA titles being locked unless you own either nVidia or ATI. Can we assume Eidos is now in ATI's camp then?
I have mentioned on all the main dev's forums that 3D owners should ask for more options in graphics menu and not worry about 3D! Why? Because all games typically work in 3D. Games that start off horrid in 3D can end up looking like diamonds (GTA4, ME2 etc), with tweaking. Also more options in menus benefits ALL gamers not just the few 3D heads so is likely to be supported by more people. Only a complete and utter scumbag would say "No, I hate 3D, I think you should only have Low, Med and Max graphics settings!'
My oldest game is TEN years old: Project Nomads! CDV had probably never heard of S3D!
This is very bad news.

You need to work with ATI to get mutual support from devs for their sake as much as ours. It will not benefit ATI 3D sales if only ATI games work on their 3D and nVidia games work on ours!

Unless you were made of money would you splash out on an expensive piece of kit if you were not sure of what games would support it? So all games have worked on every 3D solution. To my knowledge this is the first time the devs have purposefully blocked 3D.

This crap happens more and more today. Media/games/softwares locked to certain hardwares etc. The parallells are many. If 3d "dies" again it's not the fault of people not being interested. The shortsighted greed of companies makes the situation way more complicated than it would have to be.
In a perfect world it would be so simple and not the unlogical mess we have today... /sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well said andysonofbob.
I agree in part.
Devs need to use lighting, shadowing, reflection, refraction methods that are stereo-compatible.
They should also use depth-of-field and motion blurr methods that are stereo-compatible.
Otherwise they should not have to worry about stereo "support" for a specific stereoscopic rendering platform.
Also, the use of reprojective or Crysis2 - type stereo should be provided only as an option to dual-image stereo rendering, which is of course much better.
The current situation in which Edios has locked out the use of 3DVision is unfair to PC gamers and will ultimately hurt game sales (e.g. No Deus Ex for me, until 3DVision is supported!)

Many older games work with 3D because there were no stereo 3D format wars back then, plus they had simpler graphics that didn't screw things up with HDR or special reflections or [insert your own acronym here] - Not that those are bad for non stereo 3D graphics. For example Overlord 1 - fantastic in stereo 3D. Overlord 2 - not so much.
I'm pissed that DXHR doesn't support 3D Vision. But it very very very likely will eventually. It sucks, and ATI gets the exclusive deal, but I'm sure two or three patches from now will have Nvidia on board as well. It may take a while, and it's unfair to us, but that's the reality of the situation.

If I knew it would be sorted in a few months I wouldnt care either. We are just in unknown territory atm.
@ Baragon
In an ideal world Devs would render objects correctly. As you have stated in your posts: properly rendered effects look loads better than effects rendered in 2D, even when viewed in 2D. But given a choice I would rather games worked, with 2D objects as long as they were fixable like GTA4, Oblivion etc where you can disable the 2D elements.

- We have supported Quad buffered in our driver for two years allowing game developers to use it in their game. Avatar and Crysis 2 both used it. Just last week AMD finally released their support. Developers can use both modes if they want to get the same effect on each GPU. Some choose to do it, some don't for whatever reason.
- We have supported converting existing games automatically into 3D using our software for alomost 3 years, while our competition doesn't. We think this is a good feature for users. I don't have any information why AMD doesn't support this.
- All of our new 3D Vision monitors support HDMI 1.4 3D which means you can connect them to an AMD GPU and get HD3D support.

I don't think we can assume Eidos is in Ati's camp considering they have already confirmed 3D Vision support for Batman Arkham City, which is published by Eidos.
.... I think.... at least Arkham Asylum was.

Maybe I'm wrong, because I don't have an ATI setup, but I don't think that any of those 3D Vision Ready games have been crippled to intentionally keep them from working on ATI software. That is a major difference. This is just like the mess that is occuring with 3D blu-ray movie exclusives. Pitiful that companies don't just focus on getting the equipment out there at affordable prices instead of trying to force consumers to buy their product by limiting access to content.

If Deus Ex not working with 3D Vision is the result of the devs making a deal with AMD to stitch up nVidia users then I agree that it's pretty despicable. Having said that, it doesn't seem much different to what a certain green company did to owners of nVidia cards with other brands of shutterglasses, passive projector setups or head mounted displays who'd been relying on the nVidia stereoscopic drivers for years when 3D Vision glasses were launched. Glad to hear that we're all agreed now that deliberately sabotaging 3D for users of different hardware solutions is A Bad Thing To Do. When you're re-enabling all these options in the next driver release can we have OpenGL support back too please?
Cheers,
DD

But given a choice I would rather games worked, with 2D objects as long as they were fixable like GTA4, Oblivion etc where you can disable the 2D elements.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

This sucks, but I guess it is not much different that some of the 3D Vision Ready games that have come out specifically supporting Nvidia. I guess what has changed is now AMD is in the ring.

This is why I love 3D Vision and why I am so passionate about Devs leaving games alone. If only ATI used this method! So ATI users can play 3D Vision games but nVidia users cannot play ATI games... Hmmm where might this lead? Betamax / VHS
@andrewf
Have you guys (nVidia and AMD) ever communicated regarding them using software that will convert existing games automatically into 3D? Both of you doing this leads to far healthier competition than the other method...

Cheers,
DD
