Batman: Arkham City in 3D Vision
  10 / 15
I can affirm that the game is pretty demanding. I am running two 480GTX cards in SLI and still get framerates in the low 20's during the benchmark with DX9.

But 20fps isn't average right? That's the lowest it goes surely. I know with DX11 settings I'm also getting some dips to around 11fps, but the average is 41, so the only time I see 11 is right when a new scene loads up or something like that, which I can live with.

It's hard for me to agree with that. I just think the game is extemely demanding on most systems. I played through the entire game in DX9 with 3D and all settings maxed. It has been the most stable game I have played. Now that I'm running in DX11 there are a few stutters but it is playable. One of my buddys has the game for PS3 and he says that it stutters and has crappy frame rate. So, either they are just pushing the envelope of platform capabilities, or you are right and there are some things not optimized. I'm just not personally seeing it on my machine. (I'm using the 285.79 drivers because I haven't heard anything good about the 290...)
Well, this could be the case, I don't remember how it was with AA upon its release, but I do believe that fps was gained with the next driver versions. The situation I've described happens at the very beginning of the game (catwoman in the court room, the initial point of slowdown is when I try to look through the windows with physx turned on, that's right after the cutscene). With physx off I breeze through the scene and get on the wire effortlessly, with it on I hardly move on said wire. Anyway, here's to hoping for a patch/new driver release, since I'm not upgrading in the coming months.

Ya he's probably referring to the part of the benchmark with the freeze gun dropping to ~20s, but the average should still be up around 45-50FPS for the entire run. I ran the benchmark with a dedicated GTX 280 for PhysX also and it wasn't able to increase those minimums even though PhysX used 30-50% of the 280's GPU time, so I think its actually the PhysX runtime bottlenecking the GPGPU calculations. From what I've read the new PhysX runtimes Nvidia has been working on should help improve this, as PhysX will get multi-threaded support. Also hoping the benefits are retroactive to older games.

Here's that graph of Afterburner I was referring to earlier, unfortunately I don't have a graph of the 280 results but for DX9 it didn't offer any significant improvement over just 2x480s. With DX11 it might be a different story since DX11 is much more demanding on the GPUs. You can see at the end of both DX11 runs in the outdoor area with the Lion, GPU usage skyrockets while DX9 the GPUs are twiddling their thumbs. If you threw any kind of PhysX requirements in there with DX11 the overall FPS would tank imo unless you had a dedicated PhysX GPU as well.

This isn't that surprising honestly, the PhysX in City are more demanding than in Asylum. On a GTX 280 dedicated to PhysX running the benchmark, I saw the PhysX could use 30-50% of the 280's GPU cycles. If we translate that into rough SP demands, that's about 100-120SP, which is about 1/3rd-1/4th of your GPU's shader budget. That leaves the remainder of what's roughly the equivalent of a GTX 285 (240SP) to handle Batman AC in 3D, which is a pretty tough proposition.

While I wouldn't recommend dropping a PhysX card in for just the PhysX games out there, you'd probably benefit from one since you're probably already GPU limited or close with PhysX off running 3D Vision on that card. If you have a spare card laying around with 100+SP it'd be worth sticking in while playing that game, imo.

My previous system was pretty comparable to yours. I upgraded because Batman is my all-time favorite icon and this was pretty much guaranteed game of the year for me. I didn't want to take a chance on it not running well. I'm not having any issues like you are describing in those same areas, so I am assuming it's insufficient hardware, but then again, it's hard to say for certain. Are you running just one GTX560? Man, you could really gain some tremendous performance by simply adding another - 2 SLI'd 560s will beat out a single 580. My previous build was with 2 450s SLI linked and it handled PhysX in any game just fine.

Actually, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm thinking that means the problem is my old drivers. The first post from Andrew said we should use 285's or later but he didn't say why and this was the only real bug I was seeing. Many thanks!

Now I've got to decide if I should try to hold out for 290 WHQL drivers. NVIDIA is due for another driver set and the beta started two weeks back...

Hi there. I have a gtx570 and have connected it with a LG 3D tv . So i play game in 3d using hdmi 1.4 mode ( i have bought the nvidia software "3DTV Play " . i cannot make Batman AC to run in 3d mode though . I get the message that i need to change the resolution to one with 24 fps. But i cannot find any option in the game's settings to drop my fps @ 24. i use the 290.36 drivers. i even tried to set one of these "3d desktop resolutions " but still nothing. When game starts, is always under 60fps so the 3d cannot be enabled. Any idea? Do i really have to change the fps @ 24 in every game myself , or is there any way that this 3dtv play software has to do it itself ? I cannot really get it. Thank you in advance

Just loaded this game up last night for the first time. WOW! 3D is crazy awesome!

I'm running DX9 w/PhysX turned on and all options MAX. Getting about 40-50fps in 3D. I'm equipped with a GTX 590 w/ 290 beta drivers.

I'm not familiar with 3D TV play, but your post is confusing. You may want to clarify it so that others can understand your problem. I think you are referring to the refresh rate of your television and not frames per second, which is completely different.

That's about right for DX9 settings. Enabling DX11 features seems to cause a significant drop in performance. I'm not entirely convinced the game is all that optimized. We need some more people on here with absolute top end systems to really get a feel for it. So far it sounds like people with really nice gaming rigs are still only getting around 30fps in DX11. I will be installing a huge Zalman CPU cooler this weekend and after that I'm going to tinker with some more overclocking. I'm anxious to see if I can get anymore out of the game - if not, I will come to the conclusion that the game really does need some more polish.

yes. i dont mean the fps of the game. its about the resolution that the game starts. for example 1920x1080 @ 60 means 60hz refresh rate. the 3dtv needs either 1920x1080@24 or 1280x720@60 . I can set this to other games so i can play them in 3d mode. But cannot make it with Batman AC /blarg.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':/' />

You probably need to run the config launcher, you can either go from Games Explorer by right-clicking on the Batman AC icon and choosing "Launcher" or you may have to go to your Batman install directory at %:\\Batman - Arkham City\Binaries\Win32 then choose BmLauncher.exe from there. Try either turning on 3D Vision in the launcher or choosing 1280x720. Worst case you may need to set your resolution to 1920x1080 @24Hz in the Nvidia control panel if you want to run 1080p @ 24Hz in 3D.
