Upgrade From AW2310 to Asus VG278H Worth It? Looking for benefits in ghosting/crosstalk
  2 / 3
The Asus is WAY brighter than the first generation 3D screens. I am pretty sure you will like what you see. Not only that, the new 3D glasses are loads better than the old ones. The immersion you get from this screen when the depth/convergence is set up right is unreal. It is as if the screen is gone and you are looking through a glassless window onto real 3D objects. I swear everybody that rags on this technology as 'just a fad' hasn't seen a 3DVision game come out at them. There are so many times when I just quit playing games and sit there in awe at what is happening on the screen.

as for the emitter being buggy, look at my emitter thread... I actually have no idea what that was, how it was fixed, or anything, but for 3 days I had no emitter connection so it can happen.

I second everything said in this thread, used the Alienware for two years and recently upgraded to the Asus, absolutely no comparison. The AW drove me a bit crazy with its ghosting, especially in the bottom part of the screen. Very grainy in 3D mode and yellow double images. The Asus is nice and crisp in 3D mode, still a touch of ghosting here and there but overall a massive improvement. Go for it, don't look back.

Glad its working again for you now. even though it sounds like a bloody nuisance, im sure if the emitter fails its covered by the 3 year warranty, so at least there is a little protection should it fail permanantly. Ive never had any of those problem with my nvidia 1 set in the 1.5 years ive owned them, but i have had a fair sharte of other bugs.

another +1 for the Asus. Sound like other then the buggy IR its all pluses for the Asus. Im glad the ghosting has been largly sorted out. I doubt they can ever get it to 0 ghosting with currect active glasses tech (as im not sure the glasses block out everything by themselves) but this definintly sounds like a step in the right direction.

Thanks for all the responses guys, hopefully this thread will be of use to other people.

Wow, i mean seriously, there needs to a be a reputation thing on Nvidia forum, as youd get my thumbs up. Thankyou so very much for your extremely detailed account, really 100x more then i expected. Ive put in an order and will comment on here with my own comparisons. As for the getting stuck in 3D mode, to be honest with the last few sets of drivers my alienware does that as well. I think Nvidia may have bodged up the release 3d code a few revisions ago.

Many thanks again!

Np, glad it was helpful. It basically covers all of the major question marks I had before buying and in the end this monitor and 3DV2 kit has exceeded my expectations. Definitely the best upgrade I've made for PC gaming since my original 3D Vision kit.

Ok here's a qustion for you, do you know for sure that the internal IR emitter is buggy, or is it just a hunch? I was going to sell my old 3d kit, but now im not so sure. I will do some testing beforehand to see the difference. The only bug that youve listed that i know will irk me is having to go fullscreen then windowed etc a few times, is that definatly not a bug of nvidia in diablo?

Thanks again for any response.
I don't think its the internal IR emitter itself that is buggy, although I have read a few issues where the emitters are defective or not connected. I think its a driver/application issue similar to the external emitter as you saw as well with the Nvidia USB emitter. Basically, there are times when the emitter doesn't know it should be kicked on or kicked off.

For Diablo 3 it didn't happen originally, only after I upgraded to 301.42, so it could very well be driver specific. I have not bothered to play around with it more to see if rolling back or re-installing drivers fixes the problem. I did launch a few other games and found it was only happening in D3. Long-term I don't think its a major issue, something I could probably figure out but just don't find it a big enough annoyance to get to the bottom of atm. Also, lately it has only required me to alt-tab once or twice to have the emitter kick on.

Once you get your monitor this week, you'll see what I mean by not wanting to stop to troubleshoot, you're just going to want to enjoy your new 3D monitor. :)

I just picked up one of these, and it doesn't have the oval backlight issue, but if the room is blacked out completely, and you see an "all black" screen, the whole screen is a bit blotchy. Traditional bleed happens very slightly towards the top left and top right. This blotchiness seems to be normal for this model though, even the very latest stock (which this one is). It is to do with the LED sidelighting and the optical blocks behind the screen routing the light in channels to parts of the screen. As soon as there is "any" kind of lighting in the room, I cannot see it. It does also, like others mentioned, seem to change and reduce over-time. I can't think of any good reason for this. As with any TN panel, it suffers with colour shifts based on your viewing angle and distance from the monitor. Combined the the slight uneveness of the backlight, shows some interesting effects when calibrating the monitor. As the test software runs through things like 30% saturation colour shades, it seems to take on different colours in different parts of the screen. You cannot see this during normal desktop use, but could interfere if you wanted to use the monitor for any kind of photo editing. This monitor in my opinion does NOT bridge the gap between traditional TN and IPS. It is just like all the others from this point of view. Only the Samsung 3D monitors are worse with extreme colour shift from even slight angled viewing (hence they create a magic angle feature, which partially addresses this).

lol, fair enough mate, to be honest your probably right. If it's as much of an upgrade as you feel, i'll simply be playing a host of 3d games marvelling at the extra screen size etc. Also, when i got the Alienware i wasted a little time checking backlight bleed etc, and in all reality, 99% of the time, the little irks wouldnt bother you if you didnt focus on them. Anyway i will find out soon enough, should be here tomorrow, oh yeah!

What does bother me is ghosting however, as i wouldnt be surprised if they find out heavy ghosting can damage your eyesight (as your eyes have two focal points, real and then ghost image) just like CRT's did back in the day (not sure if thats proved, but first hand evidence suggests to me strongly CRT's do damage eyesight quickly) hence why i want to get it as low as possible.

Thanks for the update jonstatt. After reading many reviews i think the damned truth is any professional photo editor would never use a TN planel for their work. So that fact that this monitor may not have that accurate colours doesnt really effect me to much, as im sure i will never notice this (as im sure most people wouldnt unless in a test enviroment. Thanks for your heads up though, might help someone else in their purchase :-)

Hey up there guys, well the VG278h arrived today. First thing first, the size.

I kept on laughing when i first used it (in 2d.) its flipping massive!!! for anyone thinking there 24 inch is already too big, stay away from this monster! i love it however, although will take some getting used to.

The screen colours seem much more vibrant then the aw2310 and all in all the picture quality looks fantastic.

3D

Overall the 3d is a vast improvement.

At first however i was a little dissapointed. There is still a fair amount of ghosting in high contrat scenes, even when configuring the monitor with

55 contrast
80 tracefree.

After playing a few games though, the new brightness is simply stunning! this screen has less ghosting (all though not amazingly less in my oppinion) then the alienware but at much much brighter levels! Games look simply amazing. Its like a hole into another world now, as opposed to a stained window.

The IR emittor has a buzz when turned on, but that is completly drowned out by my speakers.

The menu buttons are HORRIBLE compared with the AW2310. Its a proper back step. The touch buttons of the aw2310 were super responsive and the menus intuitive. The buttons are placed at the bottom of the screen (litterally) so arnt as easy to access. Menus are not as easy to navigate.

Another negative is the DVI input is really badly located, and is too close to the back of the screen (really really dumb considering DVI is a standard shape!) the dvi cable therefore is not straight into the connection, but is at a slight angle with some pressure on it.

Overall though the monitor seems well built despite these quirks.

the nvidia glasses however are a disaster! the frames are now thicker and made out of ultra high reflective material. When say in dark room i can see my screen reflecing off the inner rim and is really destracting! Really reall bad design choice.

I will comment again after a few days of using it, but to sum up for anyone interested in purchasing one.

+ Best ghosting/crosstalk of a screen in 3d (my alienware was one of the better 3d monitors last generation and this beats it by some)

+ Massive
+ Great vibrancy and colour
+ 3d has never looked better
+ adjustable stand rely has a huge array of setting (even better then alienware on height!)

- buttons
- dvi connector
- ir buzz (really not a problem though)
- Still not ghost free... not even close. this screen is evolution on the ghost scene, nothing more.
- nvidia 3d glasses 2 are REALLY shiny... dont like!

Thanks for all your advice guys, overall im very satisfied!

sorry guys to me so long to get back i finally receive my 3d vision kit from ebay this was the reason from my topic here http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=230660&st=0&p=1416771&#entry1416771

i am puzzled now everything works excellent things are jumping out of screen 2 feet where i am from wow its 3D now , I hope my built in emitter is not faulty that will suck if i ever want to sell this monitor if a larger screen comes in the near future LOL.

I don't know i moved my built in emitter up or down it never changed anything my usb emitter i move it around my desk it is sensitive.

i had a hell of a time getting the usb emitter to work by eliminating the internal one...

I used some electric black tape not the so sticky kind a dollar store would be best to get it,i put it on the inner upper rim on top of glasses that took care off it make sure not to get it on the lenses

the nvidia glasses however are a disaster! the frames are now thicker and made out of ultra high reflective material.

I used some electric black tape not the so sticky kind a dollar store would be best to get it,i put it on the inner upper rim on top of glasses that took care off it make sure not to get it on the lenses

sorry guys to me so long to get back i finally receive my 3d vision kit from ebay this was the reason from my topic here http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=230660&st=0&p=1416771&#entry1416771

i am puzzled now everything works excellent things are jumping out of screen 2 feet where i am from wow its 3D now , I hope my built in emitter is not faulty that will suck if i ever want to sell this monitor if a larger screen comes in the near future LOL.

I don't know i moved my built in emitter up or down it never changed anything my usb emitter i move it around my desk it is sensitive.

i had a hell of a time getting the usb emitter to work by eliminating the internal one...

Get your mmonitor fixed under warranty! i have my new monitor, and the emittor and glasses work exactly as the old one did! the only other thing i can think about is you didnt press controll f4 to increase depth or control f6 to increase convergence.

If the same settings stored in the drivers equate to

great 3d on nvidia emitter
poor 3d on asus emiter

then sounds like hardware problem. This will definatly knock resale price.

Compared with my alienware this monitor has no backlight bleeding. It is pretty much pitch black with the curtains closed, a little hit of light but not much and its very even (maybe a tiny bit brighter at the bottom)

Comparing it to the aw2310 its a vast improvment, and to be honest i would almost say it has no bleed.... its pretty much black!

The size keeps making me laugh, it is big. The brightness and colours are really good as well. The aw2310 when bright was BLINDING. this screen seems to be brighter or more vidid but not glaring at me... hard to explain. Just seems like a much less harsher backlight. The ghosting really needs to be sorted out on these monitors though, 2ms reposnse time is way way underneath the concious eye threshold, so why can i see ghosting? i would love to know what the Black to black response time is which really should be the standard for response times.

Aer you in the market for one then jonstatt or comparing with your own?

If you like it thats all that matters. For ME I tried everyone of them. The price is so high its unreal. 24" is really where you want to go. Well the dot pitch of the 27" is what 31 and its just awful and your paying for TN. And the only one that had ALMOST no black light bleed was the Benq. This is one of those things in life you do not get what you pay for. But this is just me I am very picky when it comes to 600-700$. Like I said its a TN screen so there is so much that is not there..

But your not going to get a non TN panel which has a quick enough response time to be good for 3d... so you dont have a choice, either its a TN, Head display or projector.

As for the dot pitch, i have 20/20 vision, can see a single dead pixel on an iphone 4s at arms length, and although i would rather a higher dot pix (as it really gets in the way when viewing things in the distance with 3d) the difference in dot pitch between 27 inch and my 23 inch monitor is neglible, but the increase in size is incredible! along with that the added FOV etc, it really takes up nearly all my viewing space when im using 3d.

the dot pitch is definatly not 'awful' not even in the slightest, and i say that as someone that really really appreciates high DPI screens. I love reading on the iphone 4s or ipad 3. When there is a IPS monitor that can handle decent 3D then TN can be critised in a 3D forum, but until that day i think its a little harsh (and lets face it, decent 3D IPS screens are going to be expensive as hell for a long time.)

IMO Having the extra screen space for 3D is only a win situation, for 3D gaming there is no question, its much much better. As for office use, some people may find it too large, but then again it mitigates some need for a second monitor. I can fit 4 A4 word documents in full size and read them all clearly from about 60-80 cm away with this screen... thats epic.

as for the price.... yeah well its a lot, defiantly not worth the cash if you havnt got it spare, but if you have money to blow and looking for the best 3d monitor out now, this surely has to be it!
