What do you mean? It's clear what G-sync does and how it works. The sales blurb about improved 3d is probably just a presumption based on the responsiveness of the panel.

I'm glad that you expanded on your point a bit more but I'm not sure where you're coming from really.
I've got no immediate plans to buy a gsync display but you can't argue that's it's not an innovation and to say that no-one cares is very presumptuous.
I wish Nvidia would do more to promote 3d vision but it's a small market and in the meantime I'd rather they concentrate on a core GPU business than trying to fragment out and compete with occulus and the other 2nd coming of VR.

I said I'd report back on the G-Sync improvement to 3D after testing it a bit.
The ROG Swift looks like a killer monitor, but I can't justify the price tag and the GPU requirement to play 1440p. So, I bought a used VG248QE off eBay, and installed the NVidia DIY G-Sync kit, all for $350.
That gives me 1080p with last gen monitor, but still a well respected monitor.
Literally, when I enabled and disabled G-Sync I could not tell a difference. As a DIY kit, I wasn't sure I'd installed it right, or broke something. I downloaded the pendulum demo to see, and sure enough it's working just fine, and I can see the difference there. Note that this demonstrates I don't really notice dropped frame stutter.
I've run several experiments to understand G-Sync and also what the frenzy is for LightBoost, and 144Hz. Played an older game in 2D for awhile at 144 fps since I rarely have that experience. Played newer more demanding games at 40 fps with G-Sync on, no 3D (WatchDogs).
Overall, as expected the G-Sync experience is definitely similar to the 144Hz experience. It's noticeably smoother, and I'm a person who does not really notice or is bothered by stutter that much. I'd rather have higher graphics with some small vSync stutter, than lowered settings at 144.
It seems to me that the real benefit of G-Sync is that it allows you to game smoothly with much more modest hardware. [i]Maintaining [/i]144 fps in recent games at 1080p is challenging even for very high-end setups. Being able to drop that to say 50 fps with the same experience is an incredible boon.
Still, in my opinion, it's not a game-changer. You could already get smooth play with lowered settings or very good hardware, this doesn't really change the game except to make it cheaper to get that experience (outside of the Swift of course, where you trade GPU cost for monitor cost).
On the other hand, if you notice and are deeply annoyed by stutter, then this will be the tech for you, it works, it's very good.
On to the "superior 3D". I finally figured out what they are talking about.
It's ULMB. With this DIY kit, they added ULMB as an actual option to monitor. The far right screen control enables or disables ULMB. This is the next generation of LightBoost. And it's enabled when in 3D mode as a better version of LightBoost, so theoretically less blur.
It's not noticeable to me, although I'm a projector user, and don't have a lot of experience on 3D monitors. I do notice the substantially worse ghosting on the monitor, even with LightBoost/ULMB.
I don't notice or understand the pixel artifacting that people have talked about on this monitor.
So, my assessment is that there is no difference in 3D with or without G-Sync on this monitor. And a projector is still a far superior 3D experience, even at 720p (no ghosting, no blur, no pixel artifacts)
Other people more sensitive to blur might notice a difference in 3D, but unless you find it highly annoying, I doubt you'll be able to tell.

I think the big deal about G-sync is not only that it helps users with slower systems have a better gaming experience, but that it was just there, up for grabs, as an idea. And Nvidia implemented it.

I'll probably never need it or use it myself, but still, if you thing about it, what else is there to innovate in display technology? There's almost nothing, apart from the ocasional jump in resolution. We're really running out of ideas. And short of a productive mining expedition on Saturn, we're also running out of materials out of which to build these innovations anyways :-)

Stutter drives me mad. Even some games that purport to be a steady 60fps look like stutterthons to me. Whereas I've never noticed LCD blur. And I suspect that if I did notice it, I'd actually kind of like it, since I generally dislike the artificial sharpness of most game graphics.
So I guess gsync would be great for me in 2D and totally useless in 3D. I'll definitely make sure my next monitor is a gsync, but I won't be in a rush to buy one.

Literally, when I enabled and disabled G-Sync I could not tell a difference. As a DIY kit, I wasn't sure I'd installed it right, or broke something. I downloaded the pendulum demo to see, and sure enough it's working just fine, and I can see the difference there. Note that this demonstrates I don't really notice dropped frame stutter.
I've run several experiments to understand G-Sync and also what the frenzy is for LightBoost, and 144Hz. Played an older game in 2D for awhile at 144 fps since I rarely have that experience. Played newer more demanding games at 40 fps with G-Sync on, no 3D (WatchDogs).
Overall, as expected the G-Sync experience is definitely similar to the 144Hz experience. It's noticeably smoother, and I'm a person who does not really notice or is bothered by stutter that much. I'd rather have higher graphics with some small vSync stutter, than lowered settings at 144.
It seems to me that the real benefit of G-Sync is that it allows you to game smoothly with much more modest hardware. Maintaining 144 fps in recent games at 1080p is challenging even for very high-end setups. Being able to drop that to say 50 fps with the same experience is an incredible boon.
Still, in my opinion, it's not a game-changer. You could already get smooth play with lowered settings or very good hardware, this doesn't really change the game except to make it cheaper to get that experience (outside of the Swift of course, where you trade GPU cost for monitor cost).
On the other hand, if you notice and are deeply annoyed by stutter, then this will be the tech for you, it works, it's very good.
On to the "superior 3D". I finally figured out what they are talking about.
It's ULMB. With this DIY kit, they added ULMB as an actual option to monitor. The far right screen control enables or disables ULMB. This is the next generation of LightBoost. And it's enabled when in 3D mode as a better version of LightBoost, so theoretically less blur.
It's not noticeable to me, although I'm a projector user, and don't have a lot of experience on 3D monitors. I do notice the substantially worse ghosting on the monitor, even with LightBoost/ULMB.
I don't notice or understand the pixel artifacting that people have talked about on this monitor.
So, my assessment is that there is no difference in 3D with or without G-Sync on this monitor. And a projector is still a far superior 3D experience, even at 720p (no ghosting, no blur, no pixel artifacts)
Other people more sensitive to blur might notice a difference in 3D, but unless you find it highly annoying, I doubt you'll be able to tell.

I think the big deal about G-sync is not only that it helps users with slower systems have a better gaming experience, but that it was just there, up for grabs, as an idea. And Nvidia implemented it.
That's a big deal, I think.
I'll probably never need it or use it myself, but still, if you thing about it, what else is there to innovate in display technology? There's almost nothing, apart from the ocasional jump in resolution. We're really running out of ideas. And short of a productive mining expedition on Saturn, we're also running out of materials out of which to build these innovations anyways :-)
Yet Nvidia had lightboost for the niche S3D, and G-sync for the masses.
I say that deserves big accolades.
(Plus, these techs cannot be ignored by the display manufacturers, so they'll be added to any new monitors. Users will acctually have access to them even if they don't need them. Always a good thing, I think)
Of course, it would be better if these technologies were not dependant on Nvidia hardware, but I'm hopeful that they can all be adapted in free/open technology patents (like Free-sync etc) in the future.
Stutter drives me mad. Even some games that purport to be a steady 60fps look like stutterthons to me. Whereas I've never noticed LCD blur. And I suspect that if I did notice it, I'd actually kind of like it, since I generally dislike the artificial sharpness of most game graphics.
So I guess gsync would be great for me in 2D and totally useless in 3D. I'll definitely make sure my next monitor is a gsync, but I won't be in a rush to buy one.
In your case g-sync will definitely be a winner, as it cures the frame-sync stutter. For me 3D Vision trumps it, but everyone is different. Seems unlikely that NVidia will bring it to 3D Vision which is where it would really help.
