Decent Anaglyph Glasses?
Hi all,

I've been experimenting with 3D for a little while. I don't yet have the money to fork-out for a full blown 3D-monitor and specs, and I'm quite happy with using anaglyph glasses.

My current specs are the usual cardboard red/cyan glasses. The problem is, the cyan filters actually let some red through, which not only makes for some distracting ghosting but also some pretty bad headaches.

What I'd like is a premium set of glasses, but I'm not sure what to go for. I'm in the UK so the shipping for the Nvidia Discover glasses makes it some $63 ($6.30 for each pair). Not worth it. And I'd like something more comfortable, durable and stylish (lets face it, 3D glasses have never been that).

Additionally I just grabbed Windows 7 and the latest Nvidia drivers to go with it. With the new drivers I noticed that whilst there's a nice wizard to set it all up, there's no longer an option to customise the colour of your lenses in the settings. The reason I mention this is because I've seen some reasonable Red/Blue glasses but I can't see any option to tell the Nvidia control panel that I'd be using a Red/Blue setup and not a Red/Cyan.

I'm assuming with the latest drivers that this feature was removed and I'll need some Red/Cyan glasses. Which is a problem as the only premium sets I can really get in the UK are all Red/Blue.

So, what exactly am I asking?

* Is there any way in the latest drivers I can customise the colours, for example to set it to Red/Blue not Red/Cyan?
* Has anyone else got a particular set of glasses they reccomend (preferably available in the UK)?

And a final question; I found these glasses that are just what I'm looking for. They're not available in the UK but they're listed as a hybrid Blue/Cyan on the right eye filter. Would this cause issues with a red/cyan picture? Any ideas?

Thanks again.

anaglyph always seems to have these problems. i've been trying for a while too, and I have it working pretty well, but it's still not perfect.

I found that changing my tv's "sharpness" setting down to the minumum helped ALOT, as did turning the "colour" up to an acceptable level, and adjusting contrast and brightness boith on the TV and in the nvidia control panel.

strange that you have problems with the blue/cyan filter though....its actually my red filters that all seem a bit whacko. my blue/cyan filters do a pretty good job , but my rad lets ALOT of the blue colours through still :S if it didn't I think i'd have perfect 3d without ghosting :S

anyway, try copying an pasting the following into notepad and save it as anythingyoulike.reg, save it to your desktop, and whenever you start a game, alt-tab back to desktop, double click on your reg file, and it will add values to the registry which set it to full colour mode, with re-blue settings:-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D]
@=""

"StereoAnaglyphType"=dword:00000000
"LeftAnaglyphFilter"=dword:ffff0000
"RightAnaglyphFilter"=dword:ff0000ff

if this doesn't work for you, you might find that you need to change the registry path in the reg file, i.e. where it says hkey_local_machine, etc etc.

to do this, open regedit (click start, click run, type regedit, hit enter) and search for a string called "leftanaglyphfilter", this will tell you the correct location that you must specify in the reg file :)

hope that makes some kind of sense :S

i'm personally saving up for the zalman 3d monitor, it's only about £190 now and apparently works okay even with the free reald glasses from the cinema, so if anything happens to the pair that come with it, you can get more freebies :)

hope that helps.

That makes sense, thanks (very familiar with registry) so that's really helpful :). That opens up a whole pile of possibilies for glasses' filter colour.

I suspect our problems stem from cheap glasses - they're simply acetate sheets most of the time. I'm after a set that are fine-tuned filter lenses, for that reason.

As for the monitor/display, mine doesn't have a sharpness option (at least using the DVI cable), and the same for my secondary (primary is LCD, secondary is CRT). But I'll play with the colour values a bit and the contrast. The problem is, somehow, I get a lot of red through the cyan filter. If I look at the cyan filter through the red filter, everything is pretty much black. If I look through the cyan filter at the red one, I can actually see red. So its definately a filter issue behind it all!

I can't afford any other 3D setup yet. I've got an engagement ring to save up for!! :S Cost of carbon + metal weighing a few grams > 3D Monitor and glasses.

I have quite a few RealD glasses (4 pairs and counting!) mind!

one thing i will add, is that buying plastic framed glasses (i.e. not the free paper ones) made not much difference for me, in terms of the quality of the filters. Still the same ghosting issues, but it did improve the overall colour levels that you can see, instead of just seeing lots of re or lots of blue.

however, for the moment, i'm using the plastic framed glasses with the carboard ones selotaped on top, and that seems to work pretty well too, but obviously everythings alot darker :S

Aye. Thats another problem, but my cyan filter is definitely a pile of turds. It just doesn't block out red values. Doesn't help theyre getting battered too, which is why I'm after something more hard-wearing.

I found the pair I was after on eBay from a US seller. $13 a pair, plus $7 shipping to UK (so £12ish total). Not a bad price, and by far the best looking. No diopter correction though, so I may see what else is around first.

You know for games that have problems you should try iz3d. Go back and forth.

I've found two blue filters really helps ...

Its not the games, everything I watch in anaglyph has goasting. The cyan filter I have is far too transparent. :)

At first time I wear red-cyan glasses, I'm also curious why cyan-lens is made more bright than red-lens.
Now I know it is nature of red-cyan anaglyph method.

Red-lens blocks blue and green, and passes only red. Cyan-lens blocks only red, passes blue and green.
Cyan lens is passing one more color, so we feel cyan-lens is more bright. It is how anaglyphe works.

In some games with red-blue glasse, I feel little less ghosting also.
But with red-blue glasses, I feel more dullness of color.. because it blocks red, and green also. Green is missing.

I think adaptation is important to using anaglyph 3D properly.
With adaptation, little ghosting is not bother to feel stereoscopic 3d. So I'm playing games with red-cyan glasses almost.

Also I think anaglyph stereoscope is very good method until we have more perfect 3d display like 240hz display with shutter glasses.

Anaglyph costs little color feeling, and needs proper adaptation,
but it gives full stereoscopic 3d experience on very cheaper existing devices!

The ProView are the best anaglyph glasses you can buy (AFAIK). The ProX are in the ProView line so they should be fine.

let us know how you get on with them if you get them.

i mean, if you can get anaglyph working really well just by getting those glasses, it's something I might consider too, instead of saving for that monitor :)

I didnt order one in the end as here in the UK Channel 4 are doing a 3D week next week and have supplied free ColorCode 3D glasses (can be got from Sainsbury's). I grabbed me a pair to give them a try! They work much better!

You need to set your registry to:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D]
@=""

"StereoAnaglyphType"=dword:00000000
"LeftAnaglyphFilter"=dword:FFFFFF00
"RightAnaglyphFilter"=dword:FF0000FF
So its yellow/blue.

Use the technique mentioned before to turn it on in-game. Then, up the gamma on your game as ColorCode 3D glasses are darker and reduce the 3D effect (as ColorCode 3D doesn't need to be as strong as Red/Cyan. You'll get ghosting if its too high).

The 3D effect works much better for me, but the red values are not as strong as Red/Cyan, so blood and gore (L4D2) isn't so eye-catching.

Worth getting a pair anyway!

yeah, i'm using the same thing myself now, and I agree they work alot better for me in terms of the 3d effect, and ghosting (although still visable) is alot less noticable.....and i've managed to up the 3d effect level from 30-40% upto around 70-80%.

now if only nvidia would provide the option to permanently choose the colour system you use, we wouldn't have to keep alt-tabbing out and changing the registry.

the only thing with the channel 4 glasses, is that the colours don't seem quite as nice as for the red/cyan glasses......alot of things have a yellow or blue tinge around them, whereas with the red cyan glasses, colours seem identicle with or without 3d vision enabled, but obviosuly there is alot more visable red/cyan ghosting....if that makes sense?

in game, press crtl-T to enable/disable 3d vision and you will see what i mean........with red-cyan full colour mode, it's like the colours are the same with or without 3d vision, but with amber blue, it's not the same.......i'm wondering actually if the "full colour mode" reg edit makes any difference when in colour-code mode?
