Need advice on buying a 3D Vision monitor or not??...
Hi guys. My situation is this; I have a 3DTV which I am not happy to game on. I also have a DK2 which is obviously not good enough to play competitive games online with. So, I am thinking of buying this ASUS VG278HE Nvidia 3D Vision monitor. I am just worried that they are now outdated and with the release of 4K TV sets, is it worth me investing in one to tide me over until Oculus CV1 is released? Are these monitors now outdated to the point that it will be a waste of money? Thanks. PS I will also need a new GPU to play games in Ultra (thinking of 970) Any advice on what I should do? Should I just wait for other technologies? I am bored playing in 2D on my TV.

GTX970 is the choice ;) VG278 (I have VG278H) are always the ref for 3Dvison in full HD on 27", only the Asus Rog 27" beats them with 3dvision in QHD (2500*1440) but they are more expensive, up to you.

Yeah, I'd say it's totally worth it to get in 3D gaming before CV1. That's a minimum of a year out, you can get in some great gaming before then, and the 3D Vision is still a top-shelf experience using the mods. I have that monitor, with the DIY kit for G-Sync, which is an interesting combo. Bought a used one off eBay and added the kit. G-Sync is interesting, but not nearly as much fun as 3D. But what I'd really suggest would be to get a 720p projector, even today. By spec-sheet it seems too limited, but the actual experience of my H5360 is far superior to even the VG278HE. Since you have more than passing interest in Oculus, the projector gives you more of that immersive feeling because of the scale of the image. Resolution is not a problem in 3D. The 3D Vision projectors are hard to find now, but you can get 3D ready projectors with DLP glasses and use 3D TV Play for the same gaming experience.

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it. Bo3b I agree and I think I have made up my mind that I will invest in a 3D Vision tech. I am just hoping once I buy it, VR Direct on DK2 does not blow it out the water and I do not end up using it since I could not wait. I do not want a projector as my room would not really accompany it properly and it would be overkill for using for anything other than games. So you say resolution does not matter? I am tossing up between the VG278HE or as Chti stated, the Asus ROG 1440p....I have read that there are some issues with the ASUS ROG and 3D?? Also, would the resolution difference make a massive difference that is worth $500?? Thanks guys. Also would a 970 be enough for 3D 1440p?

I'd stay away from the ROG. Lots of people have had issues with it in 3d (check the thread on this forum), and it takes a lot to drive it. A 970 wouldn't cut it. Even SLI 970s would be a stretch in many games.

I recently sold my Asus VG278H to my dad to fund the ROG 1440p, and I use the Acer H5360BD 3D projector. The VG278H was great for 3D, used it for 3D gaming every day for over 2 years and never had a complaint, and would recommend it to anyone. I've had the projector about 9 months now and it certainly looks impressive. In my room I have it set to about 100". 720p on a projector may seem a bit low spec these days, however 3D essentially doubles up on the image as you have separate left/right views and it helps anti-alias the image, and I had zero resolution issues playing any games, even WoW and reading the guild chat. It runs films at 1080/24 3D which looks great. The only issue with the H5360BD projector is you have to use DLP link 3D glasses instead of the NVidia 3D Vision glasses. I really like the ROG SWIFT, Gsync is great for games where 3D isn't an option and it makes a huge difference for FPS games - I can now actually hit players in BF4. The increased resolution is great for 3D and again for 2D when 3D isn't an option. The problem mine has is inversion lines when the 3D is enabled. It may be a fault, it may just be the way the monitor functions. I can ignore them easily enough though, as I sit a few feet away from the screen rather than right up close. If you go for the ROG Swift I would recommend for you to get the GTX 980 rather than the 970.

Ok, so my plan is this. I am going to assemble my TV up on a wall. Buy a new monitor which will be the ASUS VG278H and a gtx 970 MSI edition...this should tide me over until CV1. The only thing stopping me now is Nvidia VR Direct. Do you guys think it will turn the Dk2 into something more playable?? I have a DK2 and if it becomes playable I won't need a new monitor....

The biggest limitation with DK2 is the hardware of the unit itself. VR Direct may improve framerates, but it won't fix the other limitations.

I have a DK2 as well, and whilst it's amazing, VR Direct isn't a magic cure for VR issues. People's VR complaints right now aren't that the latency is killing immersion, its the fact the resolution isn't high enough, its not very comfortable for long periods of time, its a pain to set some of the games up, and very few games are VR friendly due to HUD, menus, text size etc... VR Direct will help at a low level technical level, but so far it's just one required step out of many, and the biggest problems need to be solved by clever hardware/software configurations with the headset manufacturers, and game developers themselves.
