I am finding it difficult to agree with you on this. VR seems to be a natural evolution in gaming. The Occulus does have it's problems, but somehow I think it's here to stay an be built upon. Third person games don't make sense for it. It's only logical use is from the first person perspective. I love 3D vision for the third person perspective and the toyification enhances that experience.

Third person + rift actually detracts from game because Rift is about immersion. Headtracking actually loses focus of character which is "immersion breaking". You become the camera not the character. I mean if I had to use something for 3d I guess I would but rift has less 3d effect then a 3d display and lowsy resolution so its got a lot of cons. I think he wasnt even playing game and just playing around with the camera.
Maybe hes playing lords of shadow on a rift cause he doesnt have a 3d display = )
A man can dream.... [Hes probably just playing around with it though]. Someone was playing with Bayonetta with 3d vision. http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/04/bayonetta-in-3d/
and both have Konami as publisher... AND Metal Gear Rising is comming to pc .Though unfortunately I dont think he worked on Rising. *Shrug* Im probably grasping for straws.

Dont know about that eqzitara, I mean say in the Tombraider one of the most annoying thing is the crappy camera that pans around Lara all the time, you know it follows the mouse and is autocentered around Lara so you cant strafe and look at what direction you want as when you do the auto pan kicks in and I just hate it when games work that way.
In the Batman series thou the camera is free from the character and thats is immersion/freedom for me atleast :)
I guess all games should have an option to disable the camera that works that way I think.

Thats just the video games camera system. Free roam is what you like. I think certain developers don't like it because they are going for cinematic though in games with lots of tall objects [walls/trees/etc]. It conflicts alot so they dont use it either.
Analog stick works because its 360 degree focused around characters position. Using head tilt as control of camera in a third person game is a very terrible idea just because its a hassle and reminds the player you are not the character you are controlling but are the camera. Its kind of like using mouse for turning instead of keyboard which is awkward but also takes you out of game with unnatural movement.

Actually I think it has its uses besides VR. You have portable (hopefully) full HD screen with amazing FOV, very light that you can carry anywhere. Even without VR, for anyone that travels a lot, it's a great device for portable gaming and movie playing on the go. I have an HMZ-T1 and I can tell you that together with a laptop, having a portable 3d entertainment center is great.

How about the analog stick works the same as it does now, to rotate the camera's position around the third person character, and head tilt turns the camera in place. Yes, it means our viewpoint is literally as the camera man...but it already is for third person games. There's no requirement to use head tilt anyway. As long as the player it sitting in a chair, they'll tend to point their head straight on.
While I agree that there's less to gain with the Oculus Rift for third person games in comparison to first person, I disagree with what you've been saying. I think they'll play just fine. Of course, we won't know until we actually try it.

I don't see third person games being ruined because of the headtracking. It's a possibility that the brain "gets used to" how the control scheme of the virtual environment is and that it all enhances the total immersion. So maybe acting as the camera in a virtual world might not be too bad. I know that vr-purists will hang anyone from saying this though. Anyway i need to see this kind of stuff for myself before making any definite assumtions.
But in my opinion: being totally true to vr gives a lot of limitations in how to construct a game or other virtual environments. How bad is really something in the middle?

Yeah I want free roam camera but understand what you mean eqzitara but I feel a little lost to play like that way, like it's on rails..atleast give me an option would be nice even it may compliment things :)

I personally think VR with 3rd person could work very well, it's all about its implementation. For example, when you turn your head to the left in real life, the game character also turns his head in the same direction and your camera moves to show more of the the left side of the screen.
This way it doesn't break immersion. You are controlling the character and his field of vision. Becuase you're sat at your desk, you're only going to want to move within a 90degree arc at most anyway, enough to just get a slightly better look at what's going on in your periphary.
The break in immersion that eqzitara is talking about whould only come about if moving your head would only move the camera, and away from the focal point of the game character. But that is a game design issue, not a VR issue.
As for getting used to it, of course we would. Our brain adapts incredibly quickly (within seconds) to new pespectives and orientations. VR projects have shown this in many scientific experiements. If you were to start living your life in the 3rd person, I'm sure the novelty would wear of within a few days and it would become the norm and quite agreeable.

Above show why camera + third person as unhooked camera doesnt work.[free roam]
If its hooked to character back like look left rotates chamera for left look, and repeat for others [up/down are really bad ideas]. You are just making an on rails camera but giving a function for no purpose. You look left? K. Why not just face left? Thats why first person works the character/camera are the same thing, not in third person. You are just adding an extra step that is a hassle. You have to literally remain stationary for the purpose of not looking in a direction till you have to but you can just face that direction with character.
Everyone wants every game to have implementation/be built for 3d. Its not going to happen. Headtracking offers nothing to third person. It breaks games more then anything.

I'm pretty sure you're not right in thinking that 3rd person has absolutly no place on VR, but I'm willing to hear you out on this. For example "you look left, why not face left?"
When you hold something in your hand in real life, do you always want to look and point in the same direction?
Controller/mouse for aiming and movement. OR tracking just for the viewpoint. It would allow you to keep aiming at something while having a little look at something else. I personally think that would work just as good in 3rd person as it would in 1st person.
You may be right, and VR can offer nothing to 3rd person. But I think that is a very black and white view of how we can experience things. Our brains change perspective dependant on many things. Even our sexual identity can be altered via simple visual stimuli.

Basically, your brain is in your head, but your mind is a virtual projection existing in the virtual enviroment you create based on stimulus from your senses. There is no reason that you perceive 'yourself' to be behind your eyes. It just happens that way becuase we are so reliant on our eyes. So our mind can quite easily take on other bodys and exist in other spaces (aka not always reside behind the eyes). Mix third person with a touch based interface e.g. visual stimulus of someone touching the VR 3rd person's arm, at the same time your real arm is touched in the same place, your minds position will shift from it's normal virtual housing of in your head. Even kinect style motion capture could funk out your brain as you assume the identity of the 3rd person becuase it is mimicking all of your moves. The result could be quite amazing, and an experience that many will never have without taking hallucinagenics.
I think this guy delves into the realms of 3rd person gaming possibilitys pretty well:

Check out idea at 15.40. I personally feel that this works on a simple but effecient way.
I personally would prefer to be using the OR for 1st person experiences, but I would hate for it to stay at that. What about cool 'out of body' near death experiences. I think the true potential will only be unleashed after much trial and error and years of getting it right (just like the evolution from keyboard look > mouse look > mouse free look .

aww, fair enough. I think experiencing things from different perspectives has huge untapped potential within the gaming world and is pretty awesome in itself. The idea of the character turning around and talking to you was interesting I thought. All of a sudden you would be a seperate identity, a point of focus. You control the character but he is not you and has his own idenity. That's cool and I think it has potential for something novel. But hey, that's me.
On a much lower level, later on in the video it shows things like free look driving, and controlling the direction of the vehicle with the controller. I think that works perfectly and would be a great way of controlling things.
Poor Cymatic Bruce lost you before that though eh?
