Mass Effect 3 - 3D Vision Ready? Demo available 2/14
1 / 2
This is probably one of the most anticipated games of 2012 and the finale of the epic Bioware sci-fi trilogy. There's been a few threads guessing whether Mass Effect 3 will be 3D Vision Ready or not, but we'll be able to get a glimpse of the 3D Vision support before we buy when the demo releases on 2/14.
I'm personally on the fence but optimistic about 3D support. Bioware hasn't paid a lot of attention to full 3D support in the past, but their games are generally 3D friendly without too many problems overall outside of 2D nameplates/cursors/crosshairs. My biggest source of optimism however is the fact UE3 has natively supported 3D Vision for most of the ME3's development cycle. Another positive sign is most UE3 games that launched in 2011 also had excellent support for 3D Vision overall, including Alice Madness Returns, Bulletstorm, and Batman Arkham City. Finally, MTBS interviewed Nvidia's Andrew Fear at CES and Andrew seemed pretty excited about upcoming 3D Vision Ready games slated for this "Spring".

While me1/2 had issues in 3d vision(works much better on tridef). I alway found dragon age 1 great in 3d vision and dragon age 2 good.
If nvidia knew ME3 was 3d ready they would be sounding the trumpets lol. I would be very happy if it is 3d ready which there is a chance since the newest unreal engine 3(as of a year ago) is 3d ready as you stated earlier. ME3 being 3D could be a very huge boon to the 3d community that we will be needing because of the high resolution push thats coming along.
Pray and see I guess.I got 3 complete saves of me 2 waiting....(lost 3.)

Dragon Age 2 good??? Clouds have had issues in many games but that's the only game I've ever seen where clouds POP OUT OF THE SCREEN! Mass Effect 1 and 2 weren't real good, either. Star Wars came out fine but that's a very different engine. Sorry, but I'm thinking the chances are low for this one.

Did you ever watch my video for ME1 in my sig? Of course shadows are disabled and i don't mind aiming between reticules much either. I still thought it was great though.

Sky doesnt bother me... its not like you are in the sky. Tons of Great 3d games with bad sky. Skyrim, fallout, assasins creed.
Me1 is good if you edit some settings(remove reticule and light flares)I don't remember any issues once I did that.
me2 can be okay/almost good on 3d vision. If you go into .inf and remove crosshair + some other settings.
me1/2 is even better on tridef no light flare issues..
ME3 all depends if they grabbed the updated unreal engine 3 or if they continued on same version of me2. Which thinking back I think they did upgrade the engine. Because when me2 ps3 came out they said it will be on updated unreal engine which it was.http://www.vg247.com/2011/01/02/mass-effect-2-ps3-uses-me3-engine/
I am gonna cross my fingers but def. helps our odds.
@chiz I just realized you have an ssd hard drive,a 2 hard drive raid, and a 3 hard drive raid..... you crazy man.

lol not sure Nvidia is willing to say anything about 3D Vision prior to launch anymore after all that BF3 dust-up. /rofl.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
But ya Bioware doesn't really push the graphics envelope but generally adhere to good 3D rendering practices in their games so they end up pretty 3D friendly overall.

I couldn't force AA with Nvidia either, so if you have Tridef, make sure to give that a shot, especially for us 720p'ers.
What drivers were you using? You could force AA with ME1/2 since launch on both games by flagging this AA compatibility bit: 0x080100C5
Its flagged by default in all the drivers after 197 or so, all you have to do is set AA mode to Override like most older UE3 games. Unless AA is disabled in 3D Vision for this game, which I doubt, I'll double-check in a bit. I know Tridef disables AA by default though, so maybe that's why it wasn't working for you?

Dragon Age 2 was only slightly worst than 1 with 3D, overall much worst of a game though. The sky isn't that big of a deal honestly, its just emphasized in the demo because that's all outdoors. You don't notice it much otherwise.
Mass Effect 1 and 2 suffered from a lot of the same problems as most older UE3 games, weird post-process halos and potential shadow problems. We've seen with the newer UE3 games that use the updated 3D Vision SDK are near-perfect in their 3D rendering, only a few minor issues with UI, enemy icons, crosshairs in most of them now. Unless Bioware didn't bother to update the engine at all from 2 to 3, I think there's strong cause for optimism for much better 3D Vision support with ME3.
Honestly, I'd be happy if they just rendered everything correctly in 3D and allowed us to disable the in-game crosshair, ala Skyrim.

Yeah sky doesn't bother me nearly as much as some of the post-processing halos or 2D screen elements or crosshairs you see in a lot of games. A lot of these games don't emphasize the sky too much, I just played AC: Brotherhood and didn't even bother to install 3d4dd's excellent fixes, because the Sky just wasn't bothersome enough.
The last bit though, when you say ME2 PS3, did it come out much later than the 360/PC version or something? Remastered on an updated UE3 version? Interesting if they did all that for a re-release, but good news if true.

@chiz
ME2 was a pc/360 release then a year and half(guess) later they released it on ps3. With the ps3 version they removed the me2 engine and inserted the me3 engine. Which was an updated version of unreal engine.

I like the lighting improvements. ME2 overdid the dark theme a tad.
While it is ea who said this... would be nice to believe.

If you look at both dates it says 3/--/2010. Mass effect 2 ps3 came out January 2011 on enhanced unreal engine. The more I think about it the more excited I am.Logically it should be.
2011 Batman: Arkham City Rocksteady Studios Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
2011 MStar Nurien Software CJ E&M Games Corp.
2011 Mortal Kombat NetherRealm Studios Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
2011 Bulletstorm People Can Fly Electronic Arts
2011 Dungeon Defenders[55] Trendy Entertainment Trendy Entertainment
2011 Section 8: Prejudice Timegate Studios Timegate Studios
2011 Alice: Madness Returns Spicy Horse Electronic Arts
Everyone of the last 5 unreal engine games(pc) was 3d ready and many were ea.Minus dungeon defenders which have a slight issue.
PS I hate you for making this topic cause I kept my mind off it....now its stuck and if its not for some reason 3d I will /wallbash.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wallbash:' />

Very interesting on the PS3 ME2 info, thanks for the links. :)
Also, if you want to lighten ME2 on PC you can do so by changing DepthOfField=False in GamerSettings.ini It disables DoF but also the really dark lighting that Bioware's DoF implementation imposed as well. I also found the original settings too dark so this made a big difference for me.
But yeah lol, I'm really hoping it is excellent in 3D as well but trying not to get too excited in case its 3D support is bad.... but my optimism follows the trending you outline with all the recent UE3 games being good to excellent in 3D Vision with near-perfect rendering and implementation.

I tried what seemed like an endless amount of compatibility flags and other things to get AA working with 3dTV play with no luck. I'll try that one if Tridef F's up the ME profile this time around. They screwed up the DE:HR and Dead Space 2 3D , so who knows whats in store for ME3. Tridef allows AA in 3D for ME1 and 2, thats a big reason why i ended up buying it. I use it with no problems in other games too.
I got what i think is a bad copy of Tridef back when i tried the demo for the second time after emailing them a request. The second time i tried it, there were some major problems with it, the frame rate crawled and there were many strange anomalies that happened. There was no side stretching of the scene as you got closer to the edge of the screen, which there should have been since it was a wide FoV. It was not usable, but i knew from a previous use that it worked just fine in the same games i was having problems in, so i wonder if that what happened to you, since you said the performance with DDD was terrible.

Hmmm that's odd, if you were able to get AA in ME/ME2 with DDD it should've worked for Nvidia too since it would still have to be forced on by the Nvidia driver. In any case, I verified last night and AA definitely works with Nvidia in 2D as expected, but also with 3D Vision enabled.
You can double-check using Nvidia Inspector, great program to use for advanced Nvidia tweaking if you don't already: http://downloads.guru3d.com/NVIDIA-Inspector-1.94-download-2612.html
You can even use SGSSAA picking up that discussion from your downsampled AA thread. Nvidia's SGSSAA doesn't use downsampling; its more like Nvidia's TSAA applied to every pixel where multiple slightly different images are composited together. As an exercise you can also see what I was referring to the blurring SSAA can cause with the default AA compatibility bit. Reducing LOD can cause some nasty artifacts, where it appears the AA is being applied in one frame and not in the next for a flickering AA/blurring effect.
Luckily, a user here named Blaire found an AA compatibility bit that allows SGSSAA without the blurring: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=169648&view=findpost&p=1220253
Just set up your profile in Nvidia Inspector to look like this, keep in mind you may need to reduce the SSAA levels depending on your hardware and resolution. Also keep in mind the SGSSAA is limited to the base MSAA samples, so if you want 4xSGSSAA you need at least base 4xMSAA, if you want 8xSGSSAA you need at least base 8xQ MSAA. You can also use higher base MSAA and lower SGSSAA however (8xQ MSAA but 4xSGSSAA), and still benefit from the increased MSAA subpixel samples. Here's a pic of what Nvidia Inspector should look like:

I checked the results last night and it was an amazing difference, especially with Blaire's SGSSAA bits. Probably slightly better than the legacy OGSSAA modes enabled via nHancer when I tried 8xSQ with ME2 in terms of applying anti-aliasing to textures.
As for terrible performance with DDD, I don't think its an issue with my trial copy unless they are putting out bad binaries for their trial. I think its just a matter of perspective and expectations. From everything I've read, DDD users on similar Nvidia hardware or even AMD hardware like 6950, 6970, 6990 and CF versions are getting similar performance in the 20-25FPS range using Skyrim as an example. The difference is, they don't know any better because they're limited to DDD, so they think that kind of performance is perfectly normal. As a 3D Vision user who has become accustomed to 60FPS with my current hardware running the same games, 20-25 FPS with DDD is terrible performance to me, but if you only get 25-30FPS with 3D Vision it might seem like perfectly acceptable performance using DDD.

3d tv play has issues with AA but not 3d vision? I even edited my me1/2 .inf and changed it to 16. I didnt notice any issues. Nvidia didn't really screw up dues ex:hr or dead space 2 imo. Its all up to the developers. Deus ex supported amd(only game ever) and dead space 2 didn't care about 3d so they didn't support it. They were able to convince deus ex developers to add 3d vision support even though they were amd supported. They can't force companies to spend times/resources to make their game 3d compatible. Which is good that they got unreal engine to be nvidia 3d compatible since developers don't really care about 3d but will gladly stamp their box saying 3d compatible if they don't have to do any work. However I do think they should start pushing engines that are in early stages or have multiple sequels Cryengine, Infinity ward, Frostbyte(?)
I generally get 2/3 fps on a non-sli system on DDD.

@Chiz: Thanks Chiz but it must be a 3DTV Play problem as i can't get it to work with either the compatibility bit you listed, or the one you listed in your photo. Now i seem to be getting a weird performance problem with ME1 and Tridef. /rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Btw: i havent had time to look into what at the different AA modes your talking about are, so i havent responded. I'll get to it within the next few years. /confused.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Which setting did you edit to 16 if you don't mind?
I said Tridef (not Nvidia) screwed up Dead Space and DX.

While me1/2 had issues in 3d vision(works much better on tridef). I alway found dragon age 1 great in 3d vision and dragon age 2 good.

lol not sure Nvidia is willing to say anything about 3D Vision prior to launch anymore after all that BF3 dust-up.

Dragon Age 2 good??? Clouds have had issues in many games but that's the only game I've ever seen where clouds POP OUT OF THE SCREEN! Mass Effect 1 and 2 weren't real good, either. Star Wars came out fine but that's a very different engine. Sorry, but I'm thinking the chances are low for this one.

Which setting did you edit to 16 if you don't mind?
I said Tridef (not Nvidia) screwed up Dead Space and DX.
