Samsung PN59D8000 - good buy for 3d with nvidia? Is this TV supported now? Will it be in the future?
Hi folks,
Is the Samsung PN59D8000 a good buy to use with an nvidia setup (for 3d)? I noticed that the Samsung PN64D8000FF is supported in the latest 3dtv play release, but it doesn't say anything about the 59D8000 (and I'm not sure what the FF on the end even means).
I've read about the lack of side-by-side 3d support, and am not sure whether that will be limitation in terms of getting 3d working on this tv in the future.
Finally, how good a gaming experience can you get using this sort of setup? I game from my couch, and love the idea of 3d games on a large TV - but reading the threads in this forum make me a little skeptical about whether the technology is mature enough yet.

all the current tvs are a compromise. DLP is only checkerboard half resolution or 720p projectors, and all the plasmas and Lcd's have 3d image quality problems with varying amounts of cross talk. even if you get a sammy and hack it for checkerboard interlaced 1080p you will still have crosstalk, is a huge issue for most users. its already confirmed that new hdmi chips are being made for 1080p60 3d.

The crosstalk is not really that bad on Plasmas like it is on LED 3DTVs. I own a Samsung C8000 63" and it was the best TV I've ever bought and I'm truly satisfied. Off course a new HDMI Chip that provided full HD resolution per eye 1080p 60hz would be a blast, but I didn't want to wait years for that. Everytime you buy something new people will say that a better and newer TV will come out, and I hear this every day and it's not a lie, but if you really want a 3DTV I'm not sure you want to wait another year for that, do you?
I'm not sure if you get my point, but when the new HDMI 1.5 TVs come out, people will say, don't buy those TV's, wait for the next generation 3D TVs glasses free that will come out in the following year. It's always like that, it's evolution and technology, there will always be a newer and better TV to come out, now and ever.
Now to the facts, my Plasma Samsung plays bluray3D close to perfection, I don't see ghsoting in 90% of my bluray3D titles and I've watched more than 50 already. Off course there are some convertions that really sucks ass and have ghsoting, but it's a problem with the related video, not the TV.
Games like Batman and Just Cause 2 which are 3D ready look great in 3D in my Plasma TV, and they have very little crosstalk compared to LED 3DTVs. Other games can look really bad in my TV, but they also look like crap on my Alieware 120hz display with 3DVision, so it's not the TV to blem really, it really depend on software, games and other stuff.
I would advise you to buy Plasma instead of LED, and look for Samsung models that do have Checkerboard and Frame Sequential 3D modes. Using rollermod that has been widely discussed in this forum, you can play games in native 1080p resolution at 60fps which is more than enough for all games in checkerboard mode and despite of not being full resolution per eye, I can assure you that it's really hard to tell the difference between Frame Packing (full res. per eye) 1080p vs Checkerboard (half res. per eye) 1080p.
Believe me, most of this criticism about checkerboard or 3DTV's are from folks that have never seen CB or even played a 3D game using a 3DTV. Most of them just read stuff in the web and make their own conclusions. You should also consider an owner opinion about gaming in a 3DTV. Someone that has actually tried out gaming in a 3DTV and had also tried gaming in CB mode. I can tell you that you would be truly satisfied with gaming in CB 1080p 60hz, but you need a Samsung 3DTV for that.
Note that some newer Samsung 2011 TV's don't support CB and FS anymore, so look for models that still support those modes, or wait for the newer HDMI 1.5 TV's that shouldn't be released until late 2012, that's for sure.
In the other hand you can also benefit from gaming in Frame sequential mode, the same 3D layout used by 3dvision in 120hz LCD displays. But you're limited to 30fps instead of 60, but it's full resolution per eye just like frame packing and it's gaming in 1080p60hz instead of 1080p24hz. So, I really don't think it's a bad deal to get a Samsung 3DTV at this moment. Anyway, make your own conclusions and good luck.
