It really is a shame that Nvidia WENT TO EXTRA EFFORTS to exclude driver compatibility for the eMagin Z800 HMD in the post 2006 stereo drivers. To be honest, it is not just a shame but truly low down and petty for them to exclude all of us from shutter glasses to dual projectors just to scam a few bucks from Zalman (the worst thing that ever happened to S-3D).
But today I just want to talk about the Z800.
I have had the privilege (back in the Quake2 days) of trying out a variety of solutions from small vision domes (like small IMAX for only one person) to 14 foot hyperbolic vacuum screens. I remember the heavy HMDs of the day and how disappointing they were.
About a year and a half ago, I bought a Z800 on a whim because the price was only $550 dollars. I remember consulting my friend who previously worked in a University VR lab and he OKed the specs.
When the Z800 ships to your house it is a mess. Over time I fixed all of its problems from sound to color.
This is what I know now. I have never had a better gaming experience in my life. My eyes have never been so receptive to depth as they are now. I see the real world better.
You really have no idea what you missed.
My GPU is a 7800GTX and as long as it is paired with a Z800, I know that it is one of the best GPUs in existence.
Sadly, if my interests were in frames per second, this GPU would be trash these days.
This is not a joke when I say that if you secretly replaced my 7800GTX with a 9800 GX2 I would call you a thief and demand my old card back.
Technology is like a popularity contest it seems. I remember making fun of my friends Betamax VCR when I was young. We all did. It wasn’t until university that I learned that Betamax was of much higher quality comparable to S-VHS. Why did I tease Betamax back then? Why was it so fun to hate it? I have no idea.
Well, now I have no stereo drivers. I can’t play new games well. I can’t buy a new computer. I am stuck. I lose interest in my gaming hobby entirely when I entertain the notion of downgrading to another solution. I will never buy a Zalman monitor.
Nvidia, you SHOULD be ashamed of yourself. There are tons of valid arguments about demand and why I shouldn’t expect you to do something for an eccentric minority but honestly! You did something against an eccentric minority. And for what? A few dollars?
To Zalman users: Nvida will betray you. You don’t deserve it but Zalman does.

nVidia is a large company... which is inevitably split into smaller departments internally.
I don't think the heads high up know anything about stereo3D. I think they have appointed some idiot executive to look after this side and appointed him some staff. I say idiot because he obviously wasn't good enough to be put onto something mainstream... the things that get a lot of publicity within the company. Within nVidia, stereo3d development is some obscure department that no-one internally cares about and he has been put in charge... maybe he was the one responsible for the GeForceFX fiasco and this is some form of cruel and unusual punishment :P
As things generally go, this executive will not know anything about stereo3D but is trying to turn something free into something the company can make money from to make his CV look good when it's promotion time.
A case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.
I don't think the entire board got together and decided to take stereo3d in this direction... I'd be surprised if some of them even knew what stereo3d really was. And
I do not believe the entire board would look into the affair with even a little depth and come to the conclusion that stereo3d had no future and so to stop development and license it out as much as possible in order to get any kind of return. nVidia didn't get to where it is today by making these kind of idiotic decisions... at least that is what I would like to believe /ermm.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ermm:' />
In the end, all the companies that relied on the nvidia driver for their products got burned... perhaps a lesson there for any future company that would rely on nVidia.
As you say genetic, a few years down the line and Zalman will probably be one of these companies

RAGEdemon, you're probably right. I think if the top dogs at Nvidia saw what was happening people would be outright fired the same day. I'm sure someone there has a plan, but clearly they are mishandling the whole thing. At least give us a reason, even some BS excuse would be better than nothing. They could just make up some nonsense like the "new" driver was DX10 only or something. The thing is, it can't even handle DX10 shaders so I know thats bull (it just barely supports DX9). I mean, they could say something but they just leave us hanging in the dark. Its going to come out eventually what happened and I really hope they have a good story.
Anyway, I was there at one point, cursing nvidia and about ready to sell my new machine and just go ATI. But face it, ATI doesn't have an interest in 3D at this point in time. At least Nvidia throws us some scraps (aka anaglyph support). So I just bit the bullet, and decided to buy a Zalman. It kinda sucks, this new $700 "stereoscopic tax" Nvidia has implemented, but such is life. I'd rather just pay up then sit around complaining. Clearly they made their decision and I'm not sure we have the numbers to change their minds.

Z800 user here too with the 7800GS. Best immersive experience ever. 3d montiors don't even come CLOSE! I upgraded my card in anticiaption of the new drivers (that took two fricken years to come out) and for what! No stereoscopic support. TOTAL BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm pissed! /thumbsdown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Today is my birthday.
I was going to wish for pageflipped stereo drivers before I blew out my candles but then I changed my wish to world peace. I figured that had a better chance of coming true.
Just a thought, I know my money is a drop in the bucket and all but to me the difference between a GX 280 and a rock is stereo drivers. I will not be buying a $700 rock. A non Zalman only S-3D compatible GPU on the other hand…….
