Laptop 3D output to Monitor Wondering if/how it's possible to have a laptop output 3D to a monit
  1 / 2
Afternoon folks,

I'm the very happy owner of a Alienware AW2310 3D monitor which has support for Nvidia's 3D Vision glasses. At the moment I don't use the 3D at all because my desktop can't do it but I am looking to replace my desktop with a high-end laptop.

Here's the question:

Has anyone had any experience / know if it's possible to get a laptop which can connect to the monitor and feed it a 3D signal? I've read that the 3D mode is only supported over DVI, is there a work around for this (as most laptops seem to come with HDMI not DVI connections)? Or does anyone know of any powerful laptops that have pure DVI output?

Thanks for your help,

Temjin

Hi

I can summarize 3D support for your very simply:

3D Vision LCDs: require Dual-link DVI connections. Most laptops do not have this.

3D Vision Projectors: some use CRT connections, some use HDMI 1.3 so your laptop should work

3D Vision DLP HDTVs: these use HDMI 1.3 and so your laptop should work

3DTV Play: this requires the software 3DTV Play and uses HDMI 1.4. Most laptops that have HDMI 1.3 can output HDMI 1.4 timings, so you should be fine.
Hope this helps.

Hi there, thanks for the summary. So I guess what we're looking for now is a laptop that supports Dual-link DVI connections, a rarity by the looks of it but considering this is 2010 some must exist somewhere. Anybody know of any?

To be honest, there really arent. Most laptops are moving to DP or HDMI.

You can use DP to connect to a DL DVI panel by using an adpater. We do sell them on our store. It is listed as not recommended for 3D Vision, but we are testing it.

The Dell XPS M1730 has a Dual-Link-DVI output and it works perfectly with 3D-Vision. But hardware gets a bit outdated now.

But as Andrew said, those active DisplayPort to Dual-Link-DVI adapters should work with new laptops(with a DisplayPort-connector).

Thanks for all the information. The XPS M1730 does look a little old in the tooth power wise although might be fine. I'm starting to look for laptops that have offer DisplayPort connectivity to see what sort of spec I can get from those.

I've found a Dell laptop that has a Mini DisplayPort connection. Could someone point me to more informatin regarding using this connection for 3D output?

Thanks,

It would appear that the XPS series of laptops from Dell I was told to look at only have Mini Displayport connections. Does anyone know of D-link adapters that would fit a mini DP connection?

(If not I guess it's the M15x Alienware series)

You can get active DP adapters for mini or full-sized display port connections. Just do a search on amazon they are usually in the $100 range.
You cannot use a passive adapter with 3d vision.
I use an active adapter at work to connect my Quadro card to my Dell 30 inch monitor, and wouldn't recommend it, when the adapter has issues, windows hard locks, my work machine does it at least once a day.

Hi ERP,

Thanks for your reply. When you say active and passive do you mean active adapters as ones that take additional power over USB?
