3D Vision Discover does not require an emitter.
So what's with the emitter?

More than likely you're laptop's integrated display is connected to graphics integrated with the CPU and will not enable 3D Vision discover unless connected to a discrete display. The discrete display would need to be connected to a graphics output that is connected to the discrete GPU. If the only available outputs are connected to the integrated graphics you will not be able to use 3D Vision Discover.

Options might be TriDef, iz3d or there's a few other 3rd party middleware that may work.
What game are you trying to play?
There are a few games with anaglyph support built into the games, perhaps play one of them?
I think I read somewhere that on laptops sometimes if it's available, you need to click on the start button and go into programs, click Nvidia, Enable 3D On (or something like that) vs using Nvidias Control Panel.

You said that you are using an external display?
If so you need to set it as your primary display.
Did you do a full driver install like eqzitara said?
If all else fails you could try this.
