List of 3D Vision problems
  1 / 12
There are a number of long-standing problems that we've had with 3D Vision, that don't seem to ever be addressed or get attention. Based on prior experience with how big corporations work, I think there is a very good chance that the 3D team simply does not know the problems exist. I know that seems hard to believe, but please take my word for it. People in giant corporations don't ever spend time on forums, and generally have no idea what their customers experience. I'd like to compile a list of problems that we often run into, and I'll promise to share this list with my NVidia contacts, so that at a very minimum they are aware of the problems. Naturally, we have no idea whether anything will ever get fixed, but we should at least try. I'll start the list here with things I already know about, and please post your favorite problem. I'll keep updating this list, and will also prioritize it. When we get something close, I'll share it with NVidia. I'll keep a distinction between things that are pain points, and things that are clearly just bugs. Bugs: [olist] [.][s]3D TV Play authentication server down! Too bad the points have to be actionable, I was about to list as the biggest pain point for 3D Vision support as: "Shameful lack of 3D Vision support" :-) Action that, nVidia!

Great idea bo3b, here's a couple more. -DSR doesn't support downsampling to non-native resolutions, required for 720P 3D TV Play. -Stereoscopic mode switching to 3D Vision Discover. Confirmed with USB emitter, monitor emitter, multiple OSes (8 for me). I have not observed this problem with 3D TV Play. -3D setup wizard runs on every driver update, and is not optional

3DTV Play activation server problems. Their customer service needs to be aware when such a problem is occurring and handle it better, so some one calling in or chatting online doesn't get the run around. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/846046/3d-vision/3dtv-play-activation-not-working-/ The 5 activation limit used to be an issue, but their customer care seems to have improved. My List: =========== NVAPI =========== - Cannot write default values for <NVDRS_SETTING> Ex:
setNewSettings.version = NVDRS_SETTING_VER; setNewSettings.settingId = NVAPI_STEREO_RATING; setNewSettings.settingType = NVDRS_WSTRING_TYPE; setNewSettings.isCurrentPredefined = 1; setNewSettings.isPredefinedValid = 1; // Current Value of the setting (AKA user value). NvApi_SetUnicodeString(setNewSettings.wszCurrentValue, rate); // Default/Predefined value NvApi_SetUnicodeString(setNewSettings.wszPredefinedValue, rate); // Write settings in the driver status = NvAPI_DRS_SetSetting(hSession, hProfile, &setNewSettings);
- The predefined values above WILL ALWAYS BE ZERO. (If this is not the way to set a default value, the comments in the header has major problems, but I expect it to be a bug) - CM Mode relies on default value for it to work. If this would work we could enable CM in different games very easily. ============================================ DirectX-OpenGL Interooperability Layer ============================================ - On Single GPU configs, If I create the DX window as fullscreen I get a "OUT OF MEMORY" error on screen. - This doesn't happen in SLI/Surround configs. These are the 2 major problems that I encountered and really sux:(
My List:

===========
NVAPI

- Cannot write default values for <NVDRS_SETTING>
Ex:
setNewSettings.version = NVDRS_SETTING_VER;

setNewSettings.settingType = NVDRS_WSTRING_TYPE;
setNewSettings.isCurrentPredefined = 1;
setNewSettings.isPredefinedValid = 1;

// Current Value of the setting (AKA user value).
NvApi_SetUnicodeString(setNewSettings.wszCurrentValue, rate);
// Default/Predefined value
NvApi_SetUnicodeString(setNewSettings.wszPredefinedValue, rate);

DirectX-OpenGL Interooperability Layer
============================================

- On Single GPU configs, If I create the DX window as fullscreen I get a "OUT OF MEMORY" error on screen.
- This doesn't happen in SLI/Surround configs.

These are the 2 major problems that I encountered and really sux:(

1x Palit RTX 2080Ti Pro Gaming OC(watercooled and overclocked to hell)
3x 3D Vision Ready Asus VG278HE monitors (5760x1080).
Intel i9 9900K (overclocked to 5.3 and watercooled ofc).
Asus Maximus XI Hero Mobo.
16 GB Team Group T-Force Dark Pro DDR4 @ 3600.
Lots of Disks:
- Raid 0 - 256GB Sandisk Extreme SSD.
- Raid 0 - WD Black - 2TB.
- SanDisk SSD PLUS 480 GB.
- Intel 760p 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.
Creative Sound Blaster Z.
Windows 10 x64 Pro.

There's also a problem with certain games that will not switch to the needed resolutions for 3DTV Play for certain Projectors. A couple of games mentioned were Alien Isolation and Lords of the Fallen. Users, mostly using BenQ W1070s projectors, reported not being able to use 1270x720@60 and/or 1920x1080@24. EDIT: It would be nice if they enabled an advanced user depth hack. Perhaps a simple checkbox to enable 2X. So 100% would then be 200%. EDIT2: It would be nice if 3DTV Play supported Line Interleaved as an output option for Passive TVs. (and at 60)

When using multiple Stereo 3D capable monitors in clone mode 3D Vision software does net let you to choose Primary 3D Display, it automatically activates Acer monitor. Not let you to make 3DTV Play primary. For example I have an Acer 3D Vision ready monitor (120 Hz) and a LG Passive 3DTV. I mostly play on 3DTV and when I want to play 3D games on TV, I have to disable clone mod and choose 3DTV as single monitor.

My 3 biggest gripes would be MonitorSize being overwritten by Drivers and no longer an actual Setting in the Control Panel, like used to be with Legacy 3D on CRTs. MonitorSize is often not set properly for a given Display, mine is 65" but registers as 73" ... secondly as a DLP/Checkerboard/1:1 user it would be nice if scaling on the GPU still kept Checkerboard 3D intact instead of resulting in weird patterns and no 3D ... thirdly would be support for passing through Home Theatre Receivers without the need for EDID overrides. So ... 1) Let us select and use any MonitorSize Value we deem necessary or [an Option to] stop capping Depth at 100%. 2) Stop applying GPU scaling to the Checkerboard(?), fix whatever is ruining CB output when scaling on the GPU. 3) Let us use 5.1/7.1/etc. Home Theatre Receivers in conjunction with 3D Vision/3DTV Play. ... there's many more gripes but these affect me most as a user. Edit: 4) Low/No Convergence Key, Registry and Profile settable. 5) Option to remove the LaserSight Warning message. 6) LaserSight 'while held' Key, Registry and Profile settable. 7) The 'Holy Grail' of 3D gaming Auto-Convergence ... a max Setting for Depth, a max Setting for Popout and constantly keep the scene within these Values. :)

The emitter missing at boot up can be a BIOS setting revolving around USB power states at POST. With newer intel USB partial/full/suspend on timeout settings they don't get full power at lot of the times. https://communities.intel.com/message/257784 Much around with them. It's pretty much any Z97 board.

3DTV Play Bug: 1. Remove unnecessary 24 Hz Desktop and game constraints for 1080p gaming mode. This unnecessary 24 Hz constraint adds around 17 msec display/control lag, versus TriDef's Ignition (which supports 60 Hz Desktop and game with 24 Hz display devices). See https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/809649/3d-vision/please-add-hdmi-2-0-support-to-3dtv-play-/post/4487474/#4487474 for more discussion. This 24 Hz Desktop constraint, if unchanged, would also limit 2160p performance, for active 4K/HDMI 2.0 TVs. 3DTV Play Pain Points: 1. Update software to support GTX HDMI 2.0 hardware, driving readily available 4K 3D TVs. By the way, this support is likely to drive more sales of Titan X and 980 Ti hardware, because of the increased GPU processing requirements - like my recent purchase of 980 Ti, after first buying 980 in February (migration from TriDef/AMD). The great EDID mod for LG 4K TVs has been a perfect solution for LG passive 4K 3D displays, enabling 3DTV Play to be bypassed entirely, supporting direct driver/game interface with Optimized for NVIDIA GeForce 3D mode. 2. Support more 3D format selection modes, like full frame 1080p @ 60 Hz, 2160p/1080p interlace, SBS, or TB @ 60 HZ, and full-frame 4K @ 24 Hz.

EDID hacks usually solve these kinds of problems. It's annoying that it's required, but it's not an insurmountable problem.
