What is the best HW spec for stereo3D
Wondering what´s the best HW specifications on a graphic card for stereo3D mode performance in terms of:
1. Memory vs. Memory bandwidth
2. Fillrate and pipelines

i.e would a 512MB card require higher memory bandwidth to be able to keep up the speed?
And even the fillrate capacity to pump the pixels satifactory through the system?

I want to find the most cost effective solution today, to be able to switch to a complete new 64-bit PCIe based system in a year or so.
Would then the 6800GT be sufficient compared to wait a little bit more for a 512MB version or why not a G70 next gen. based card which might not be so significantly different to 6800GT when it comes to memory bandwidth but quite a jump in the fillrate due to the added pipes.

It is a misconception that Stereo cuts framerates by a half "because each screen needs to be rendered twice".

In my experience, average performance hit is around 30%.

So in if in Doom3 you are getting 100fps, in stereo you will get around 70.

Stereo does take up a some more memory, but not too significant a portion that you would need to buy a 512MB card over a 256MB card.

Remember that in the unlikely case where your 256MB card is running low on memory, it will just start using system memory and thus the performance hit wouldn''t be too bad. Memory is used much more in stereo but with a 256MB card, I would be more concerned about the memory speed rather than the amount.

Perosnally, when in stereo, i notice fps degradation much less than when I am out of stereo, as your mind tends to compensate for any discrepancies far better than non stereo.

Few months ago, I would have recomended getting a 6800GT, but now, I would suggest that if you are going to fork out $400, wait for the GF7 Series.

But then again we also have those drivers that actually was released just in April for the 6-series. And we assumingly will have the 64-bit version coming up so I would assess that a new driver for these 7-series will also probably come in somewhat late.

It´s always best to take two steps when right opportunity comes along, even if that would mean a larger investment. That pays off in the long run.

My main concern is then the memory bandwidth which doesn´t seem so aggressive that you would expect on the new upcoming cards, but let´s wait the specifications out a bit more....

And, would the increased fillrate capacity on those have an relatively large impact on the stereo performance as well? Or, what are the bottlenecks for stereo3D performance anyway in terms of hardware?? Just more power in general???

I have never really done a benchmark, I usually tend to skip 1 generation of cards... mistique>voodoo2 SLI>GF2>GF4>GF6.

Starting with the GF2, the scaling of the cards in non stereo is about the same as in stereo, so fillrate would play the same part in stereo as it would out of stereo I would think I have not benchmarked however, and it would be somewhat difficult to, as you have to maintain vsync while benchmarking.

the 6600 drivers were late on coming out, but 6800 series drivers were available well before I bought the card, which was few weks after release on the market.

I would expect that any flagship cards would be the first to get all the attention in compatibility.

Same applied for GF4 when it came out, stereo drivers were ready.

I suppose it would be prudent to not buy a card till the driver is actually out.

An analysis on benchmarks in stereo would be most interesting, of someone had the time :)

My GeForce 6800 GT has no trouble playing any of my games in Stereo3D.

I find this topic quite substantial.
I can find a 6800GT GLH with very fast memory and better bandwidth than the 7800 GTX. Now if, and only if, this really is the bottleneck when it somes to stereo3D, I can be confident in investing in a relatively cheap(?) 6800GT GLH, or is it in fact "more power the better"?

Anyone?? There is a techie out there that has the answer on this one, I know that for sure.
