I'm from The Netherlands and I check on a regular basis the website Gameking.tv for my latest news on games.
So far, the people from Gamekings have been very negative about 3D gaming. Saying the usual stuff that it adds nothing etc.
However, this week there was an video from 1 of these guys, about 3D gaming. I went as follows:
He was at his home and 1 of his friends asked him if he could show a 3D game (on the PS3).
Appearantly, the gamejournalist had bought a big 3D flatscreen a few months earlier, but had never bothered to try it out, on his PS3,
because he thought that 3D gaming is lame.
So he starts a game and gave the 3D glasses to his friend. His friend replied: OMG this is f*cking awesome!
So the journalist tries it for himself and was completely blown away!!!
He now says, that when choosing which game to play, he first plays a game that he can play in 3D cause he loves it so much.
Anyways, my question is: why are people so negative about 3D gaming when they have never tried it out?
Is it because it's to expensive still? Or because the nitendo 3DS is a bit gimmicky?
It frustrates me that those people might prevent 3D from breaking through, while they have never ever bothered to try it out for themseleves.
Using 3D is not free : first you need the new hardware, then you have to wear glasses (which can be annoying if you're not used to wearing them of if you already have large prescription glasses), you loose a lot of light from 3DTVs and 3D monitors, sometimes you loose resolution, you loose framerate, etc...
In order for people to like 3D, there has to be really good content that actually works and takes significant advantage of 3D so that people decide it's worth it to play in 3D.
If the only thing you try when playing 3D is a game with bad compatibility with lots of bugs, where you have to turn down lots of graphics options and on top of that you get poor framerate... (example, hum... crysis 1), then of course people won't like it at all.
Try a well working game and there are much more chances people will like it.
There is also a personal aspect to it : you can't be explained 3D, you have to experience it by yourself in good conditions.
You'll find demonstration 3DTV sets in most TV stores, more rarely Nvidia 3D vision demonstration computers, but these are very far from ideal testing conditions as there are usually many other people in the store and you don't keep the glasses very long, usually there are no seats, you're in the middle of the way blocking other customers. In most stores I've visited, the demos are badly set up or the previous user has modified the settings to something the next person will find unpleasant and so on.
This is completely different from the experience you get at home and often gives bad impressions about 3D.

It just blows my mind that a GAMEJOURNALIST with the equipment ready to play, needs a friend to tell him to try it out.

I lost my faith in game journalism after FarCry 2 - which I thought was rubbish. Following that most 3D Vision reviews look to my 3D educated eye to be rehashes of all the previous reviews (reviewing WoW and L4D1 and talking about 2D crosshair in B:BC2 review was April 2011)
I treat game journalists like Yahtzi of Zero Publication, entertaining and informative but I never buy a game based on their review. I only use reader reviews. I find trimming off the blatent fanboys at the top of the reader review pile and the haters at the bottom leaves you with a very reliable middle. 3D Vision is a great example of this.

A person who talks about how S3D adds nothing to a game but has never tried it out with a game or at least tried to seek out the opinions of those who have is NOT a journalist. Not even slightly. Just because you write something that other people read (or blab away on TV) doesn't make you a journalist.
As to why people throw hate at it, there are a truckload of reasons:

They've seen it in movies (or whatever) and it wasn't so good there.

It's pricey - a 3D monitor or TV costs a bunch. Lots of folks can't afford that. It eases the pain if they can convince themselves that they don't want it anyway.

It's different. For many people, different is BAD until proven otherwise (plus a few years in quarantine - just in case).

The glasses. For a lot of people this is a MAJOR hang up. What if somebody sees them wearing glasses that aren't cool?

The glasses part 2 - practicality. If you're one of those players that goes in and out of game mode several times an hour, the glasses really are a bother.

Medical issues. Some folks really can't see the 3D.
And probably some more if I would bother to sit and think about it.
That said, the hate has definitely been dying down over the past year.
P.S. Game reviews are great stuff! You just have to know how to read them. If you just look at the rating number and go with that, you're doomed. You've got to read it, pull out the facts, then try to balance the opinions given against your own likes and dislikes.
