Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I am curious about VR in the latest incarnation (since 3D Vision is pretty much "deaded" from the official driver point of view.)
1. Can you play any 2D game in VR Virtual Desktop (Either from STEAM, or VorpX or Virtual Desktop app)etc?
Does it work for DX12, Vulkan?
2. What about, for example if I feed in a SBS format of my game (I have in my OGL wrapper SBS support that doesn't require 3D Vision at all and can produce either geo3D or Depth 3D Stereo output).
Would I be able to actually see Stereo3D like I would see it on my 3D Vision monitors?
3. Anyone tried VR under Linux (using SteamOS, Proton, etc) ?
4. What is the best VR headset currently between Oculus, Vive, Index. (I am asking about the major brands since I assume other VR headsets don't work with everything as these do? Correct me if I am wrong and if a VR headset now is simply like a monitor - plug&play).
Many thanks!

PS: I am interested in a virtual Monitor and a controller so no jumping around or mounting stations and crap like that, since I don't have space or feel like clearing my lounge for this.
So, a GOOD resolution VR headset + regular XBOX Elite Controller while I sit down, next to my PC experience :)
Yes, in cinematic mode, you can play in 2D or 3D. Of course for 3D gaming, you'll need to input the correct supported format, such as SbS.

You could probably also make your fixes work in VR with this shader
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1103896/3d-vision/vr-universal-shader-/
BTW, for any HMD, it would be preferable to have compatible VR controllers to navigate menus at the very least.
Plus you'll probably want to honk some hooters in VR Kanojo

I would not buy anything from pimax. There is just so much wrong with that concept.
Sadly index is another poo resolution unit with LCD panels. Shure i believe the 120hz will give more presense but come on Couldnt they up the FOV even to 140 or Something. Specially with glasses its going To be that pitifull 100 degrees. And there is like two games to play, and the most interesting titles Are fps and horror games. Thats what the oleds Are for for fuck sake.
Im so fed up with this shit i would order instantly a starvr or similar better hmd that Was available under 3k€
Xtal is so frikin expensive.
And one major concern i have with every hmd is the Heat on your face and eyes if its not Taken care of properly it can’t be healthy.
Im Was thinking about getting a hp reverb but i don’t know its still propably a huge dissappointment.
And VR units Are kind of buy and keep, who the fuck buys used VR devices. Most likely it has been soaked in Sweat or cum as it feels like
Most people Are bying them for porn.

Its pretty common knowledge...either get Oddysey Plus or wait for Reverb for best all around image.
The HP Rverb will not be a disappointment....Its the same WMR experience as O+ just higher resolution..which in turn means higher quality of 3d objects up close..NO GRID LIKE MATERIAL PIXELATION NOR SCREEN DOOR EFFECT.
As for the apps I own all of them
Big Screen Beta
Virtual Desktop
VorpX
WMR Interanl Virtual Desktop APP
VorpX is the only one with real G3D or Z Depth Injection.
The SBS mode with something like tridef 3d using big screen is a joke
Tridef VR Stereo/Power 3D Mode is a joke.
There is nothing wrong with buying used VR devices...the foam can easily be replaced everything else is simple leather or plastic material that can be cleaned with surface wipes.
Most people are NOT buying VR for porn..as if that means what?(people have no issues buying the most nasty germ surfaced other used electronics do they?)
Again Ill defend VR just as I've defended 3D Vision from people talking out of their asses all these years.
Don't become the people you once had to correct and educate about 3D Vision.
I mean what other shit arguments are folks gonna make up next to down VR?
HMD prices??
As if we all weren't buying $700+ 3D Vision Ready Monitors all these years???
Again lets not become the blind outta ass 3D Vision negative Nancys we despised all these years..when IT comes to VR.
Special thanks to Ralf,RJK and others for their contributions to getting G3D/VR injection into our most beloved 2D AAA TITLES.
They have defineitely been the Helixmodder's of VR these past years.

I wouldn't go with Pimax either but at the same time O+ is NOT necessarily the best currently. It has basically a blurring effect to reduce SDE. Not everyone thinks that is a better solution. Some prefer the Vive-Pro. Plus the comfort level of the O+ is not the best either. They all have their compromises unfortunately.
I currently use the Vive-Pro and here are my disappointments regarding the Valve Index.
LCDs... blacks and colors in general are usually inferior to OLED. Lets see how Elite Dangerous looks in them. I guess the upside is less SDE due to the RGB sub-pixel arrangement.
The increased FOV is achieved by slanting the panels an extra 5 degrees apparently, but this has the side effect of reduced stereoscopic overlap so lets see just how that effects the general stereoscopic effect.
Off the ear speakers... What about ambient noise, after all this is supposed to be all about immersion right. I hate having ambient noise, hence headphones cupping the ears. Still, I guess there is less likelihood of your house being robbed whilst playing VR without noticing with 'off the ear' speakers.
No native wireless support. Really?
No increased resolution. Well, there is 120/144hz support but for the general VR space that requires all levels of reprojection in order to even achieve 90fps, one wonders what's the point! Oh, yeah, Beat Sabre... (Big Deal.. I play simulators in VR not this mobile graphical level stuff that permeates the SteamVR gaming space.. The software is the most disappointing part about current VR). I am more likely to make use of the 80hz support than any 120/144hz (I have an 7700K@4.8 with 1080ti btw)
Godrays... have they been improved? only I did read one impressions review of the Valve Index that suggested they are even worse.
Time will tell I guess and I have plenty of it as the Index is not available outside USA and parts of Western Europe. I am sure when it becomes available in Australia it'll have an anormous 'Australia rip them off' tax applied anyway so it will be even less compelling.
Their SteamVR software gets worse with every release and their motion smoothing , whilst initially very promising, has got worse over time too such that I never enable it on anything any more. I am pretty sure they could implement some form of FIXED foveated rendering inside the SteamVR driver which would help enormously (even Pimax is developing this at their driver level for RTX cards), but no... They just remove more and more customisations from SteamVR and it gets slower and slower. Games you have tuned to death that now run fine without any of steamVR's poor reprojection techniques utilised (at 90fps.. nothing like 120/144) suddenly become a stuttery mess with every new release.
I essentially play VR for simulators. I like 3DVision for pretty much everything else so its not a mutually exclusive option as far as I am concerned and is horses for courses. VR is not a JOKE for racing / flight simulators, but I agree that there is way too much candy colored mobile style short experiences built by college students that have flooded the VR space that gives a very poor impression.
I would argue that VR is progressing at a snails pace. I was around when the micro computer first came on the scene and I think that developed at 10 times the pace of current VR by comparison even though that too was a very niche hoddyist product. (But maybe thats just old man nostalgia).
Funny thing about motion sickness is that it effects different people in different ways. I seem completely impervious to it. Nothing has ever made me feel sick in VR but my GF couldn't watch me play a 3DVision game on my TV without wanting to throw up. (Obviously she too was wearing 3DGlasses)

So far, I am NOT impressed with Pimax customer service. They shipped my 8K HMD over one month ago from China, but it never made it to US - and they cannot see the find it (or even care). They had me resubmit my support request because aging requests go to bottom of the support queue (?? - very poor practice). By the way, the latest lens mod for the Vive Pro (wireless connection) works great - eliminates fresnel issues while not appearing to cause color shifts or geometric distortions. The modified lens almost touch my glasses, however. I have also preordered Index, as well.
I encourage everyone to get some type of HMD to experience the immersion of VR-based games (with Windows dual boot - one for HMD and one for 3D Vision). However, for 2D-based games with 3D Vision support, I still think 4K passive OLED TV is superior to any HMD hosted environment, especially when you are using second screens for simultaneous game research. Unfortunately, because of the demise of 3D hardware, new helixmod users will only have easy access to VR-based environments...

Does anyone know if the controls can work without the VR headset? I like the Valve Index concept for the hand controllers and I use head tracking equipment that works great. I run Microsoft Flight Simulator X for Steam. It would be nice to be able to control the equipment in the simulated airplane with your hands instead of using the mouse to point and click.

Maybe the Valve controllers. They integrated just about every other controller type for gameplay.

There's also voice bot and voice attack that might work.
Helifax
PS: I am interested in a virtual Monitor and a controller so no jumping around or mounting stations and crap like that, since I don't have space or feel like clearing my lounge for this.
So, a GOOD resolution VR headset + regular XBOX Elite Controller while I sit down, next to my PC experience :)
Most people give recommendations based on their experience and what they like- I like to try to look at things from your perspective and suggest what I think would work best for you.
In your case of wanting a virtual TV, you are better served with the higher resolution displays, and tracking doesn't matter so much. That puts you into the WMR camp, Vive Pro, or new Vive Index. Index is pricey and out of stock until september, and you don't need their rock solid tracking, so let's skip it. Vive Pro is good, but at $800 for headset, $1100 full kit, it's stupid expensive to the point where it's offensive.
Go with a WMR headset. The tracking of their controllers is pretty much crap, and normally I don't suggest it. In your case it meets two of your needs. Not having to do some big setup; WMR is far superior to all other headsets in setup. For seated versions, it's literally point headset at your monitor, OK done. Secondly, you want better resolution and don't care about the full wraparound VR experience; and WMR have some of the higher resolution screens.
You can get WMR headsets quite a bit cheaper than the others as well, and for seated experiences I think they are typically going to be better. I have a Dell, and it's quite a lot better visually than the original Rift and original Vive (which I also have). New Rift S is a bit of joke, the resolution bump is meager.
For your purposes- cutting to the chase- buy a Samsung Odyssey+ and try that out. You can get it on sale for $300 typically. Original Samsung is also OK, and nearly identical. Don't know if UK has these or not. Dell or Lenovo are good second choices, especially for experimentation purposes.
You can use any WMR with the VirtualDesktop/BigScreen/Katanga/VorpX scenarios, it's mostly plug and play.
Answers:
1) yes and no. The virtual screens are mostly there, but tend to be super glitchy. Some stuff doesn't work at all because they can't grab the backbuffer, or has terrible performance. For the most part they work, but my experience has been that the performance is suboptimal for all these solutions. Getting 3D to work on the virtual screen is laughably annoying, but can be done. You are more determined than most, so you will definitely be able to get 3D working in virtual world.
For 2D screen, these can mostly work as well, but I'm afraid you are going to really hate the resolution. As a Surround user, you are accustomed to a high end experience, and the virtual TV on even the Vive Pro is lacking. It's not even as good as my 720p projector, but requires 4x the horsepower. Worth trying out, but if you are only going to use it as a virtual TV I think you will be disappointed.
2) SBS works mostly. If you output something from your OpenGL wrapper, or 3Dmigoto SBS, you can set that up in the virtual TV and hit their SBS 3D switch and get true 3D. No crosstalk because each eye is separate. It's a hassle to get things setup and working, but once working it's not terrible. Depth buffer 3D works for the same reason, and the VorpX solution is OK too. None of these is as good as properly done 3D Vision, but you already knew that.
3) Have not tried linux, but have toyed with the idea of making a 3D Vision for Linux and Proton as the place to go, where we control all the knobs, and no one gets to give us a boot to the head. No forced updates, no canceled products, we run the show. Probably a stupid idea, but goddamn I'm tired of being fucked by corporations.
4) See above. I really think you should try the highest resolution version first, Samsung O+.
If you have further questions, I've got all these headsets, and have done some fairly extensive testing on the virtual TV experiences.
Helifax said:Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I am curious about VR in the latest incarnation (since 3D Vision is pretty much "deaded" from the official driver point of view.)
Helifax
PS: I am interested in a virtual Monitor and a controller so no jumping around or mounting stations and crap like that, since I don't have space or feel like clearing my lounge for this.
So, a GOOD resolution VR headset + regular XBOX Elite Controller while I sit down, next to my PC experience :)

If you go for the Odyssey+, get it from www.bhphotovideo.com, that's where I got mine from. It cost me about £320 delivered to the UK but you need to wait for when it's on a sale for $299.
DHL take care of the all the taxes. I had to wait about 3 weeks for it be to be shipped, but once it had been sent it was at my door within 2 days and DHL were really good, the driver even rang me.
In my experience the O+ feels cheaper than the Rift, but the screens more than make up for it, plus it's really good value for money and the drivers are basically built into Windows 10.
