Alan Wake - what are the 3D recommended settings?

Adjusting the convergence setting should push it into the screen.

Thanks for the tip: I'll try that!

Hi,

I tried to play this game in 3D, and for me it looked ok. However, there is 1 majour issue which makes it impossible for me to play it in 3D.
A lot of the objects are "popping outside of my screen". E.g. Alan Wake is being project in front of my monitor instead of "behind my monitor".
For some reason I can't explain, my brain seems to find this too difficult to process, cause after playing it for about 15 minutes, I start
to feel and see REALLY BAD. I don't have this with other games, cause they don;t pop out so much.

Is there a way to stop the popping out?
I love the fact that he's out of the screen, thats the best part about it.
Shame about the other bugs :(

Oops, I've attached wrong config.
This should work.
Just tried this along with the vertex & pixel shader fix on the previous page. The game looks completely different and not in a good way. So many shadows are removed that some pleaces that are supposed to be dark and atmospheric are actually now bright as if the lights are on (for example the corridor in the diner at the beginning). Fair play on all the effort thats gone into it but imo it is better just playing in 3D with no mods & putting up with the problems.

Remedy has released a patch roadmap. Pretty cool of them to do that, but im not very hopefull, so i hope you all continue to let them know, politely, that you want 3D fixes. "Improve stereoscopic 3D" isn't among that great of company down there. Also keep this in mind if your thinking about not bothering to post.

I'm not complaining that it looks bad. IMO it's looks pretty neat. However, my brain is not well equiped for popping out 3D.
(I know this because I have the same problems playing Mario on my 3DS. You can switch between 3D modus en when I choose to render images outside the screen I can't watch televion for 2 days after). Maybe I should decrease the depth for a while and see if my brain will get used to it en then gradually increase depth again).

Anyway, to be sure, I'm NOT complaining about Alan Wake's 3D, it's just that I'm looking for a way to be able to play it in 3D, because I'm a 3D gaming Junkie /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />.

I tend to use 50% depth for most games. Any more & I find it too straining :)

@Xtrem3x: Isn't depth a dynamic value that depends on the monitor? I assumed so because i game at 100% depth on a 46" screen which increases the separation by virtue of enlarging the images. What is the distance between objects at the horizon (aka max separation) on your montior at 50% depth. ...if you have a ruler handy.

Yeah, depth is a dynamic issue depending on monitor size - Pahncr's depth hack proves this.

However you cannot factor in the distance between one's eyes. I imagine a small variance might make a big difference if your eyes are forced to focus outside of the natural (or whatever it is called... crosseyed looking out!). Perhaps this is why some people struggle with 100% depth?

If the amount of separation the depth slider gives changes based with different monitor sizes, then the only way i can see to evaluate the actual amount of depth a given person is using is to measure the amount of separation at infinity and compare to that person's interocular distance.

I had the same problem in the beginning. I found out however that after playing for 2 weeks on 50% (and taking regular brakes) I could turn it up to 60, 70, etc.
At this moment I can play for as long as I like on 100 procent depth. I find the difference between 50 or 100 procent spectacular. So maybe, you should give it a try.

(Totally offtopic: I bought Prototype a while ago for a cheap price, but after playing it for 10 minutes decided that it was not interesting enough. (I'm sure I was judging to quick, but I have a lot of games that I still need to play, so you have to make choices).
Anyway, yesterday I decided to give it another go because I have 3D now and can play at 100 procent depth.

We talking about prototype? Did you install the d3d9.dll and shaderoverride in the right folder(same as game executable)?
Steam is lame with crc's this has happened with other fixes so may be it again. The only way to fix this is to manually do it.
Download
https://s3.amazonaws.com/HelixMods/*Mainfiles/Debug.zip
Make a txt in same folder as .exe and d3d9.dll
paste

[General]
DumpAll=true

Then rename that DX9Settings.ini
Open game...play till you get to gameplay then exit
Find the correct shaders in your dump folder that match shaderoverride(will have to open and check). And paste in the full text from the fixes. Then rename it example...
VertexShader_25_CRC32_750325D5.txt
Rename it to "750325D5.txt" , i.e. only CRC32 in file name.

Hopefully you just installed it wrong but if not and you have to do second step let me know if you fix it so I can add to wiki OR if you think thats too much I will go through it and fix it when I get a chance. Just do the first part with the dx9settings.ini and dump folder then zip it and give to me.

Hello Eqzitara

Really appreciate the help.

I installed the debug wassname and wiotout me doing anything most of the HUD was fixed! Only the objective icon was 2D. There was a red text with shader details on the top left and upon exiting there was a Dumps folder. In there was alot of txt files - too much for me anyway.

The debug d3d9.dll works but the release one doesn't it seems. The prototype link only has the shaderoverride folder (which I placed in Prototype's folder) it doesn't have anything else. In that Pixel is empty and vertex has a second, out, folder with 2 files in it.

Does that sound right?

Thanks!!!
