Force 3DTV Play to see Samsung TV, using a splitter and a receiver SOLVED!!
  1 / 2
3DTV play works if I connect directly to my tv, but I have all of my sound going through the receiver and no 5.1/7.1 over TOSLINK if the source in is HDMI (dumb I know). To add to this I have only 2 HDMI ports on my receiver so I have a couple of splitters/repeaters to hook everything up. TriDef doesn't seem to care, but I would like to try out the NV product again, it's been a long while since I've tried the trial out. Any ideas on how I can force it to see the tv? Once I install 3DTV Play it says no 3D display detected. Some sort of EDID override? TV Model: Samsung un60es7100

I've never really messed with EDID overrides but theoretically you should be able to dump your Samsung's EDID and use it while connected to the RCVR/Splitter ... although you may have to work something out for the 5.1/7.1 audio if the TV is only reporting 2.0/2.1 audio, I think mine does. I'm interested in this as well, I'm kind of in the same boat even though I do have toslink on my MB I really don't want to have to use it, I haven't had much luck with it. I used to be able to work around it on the older Drivers by connecting to the TV, setting everything up and then connecting to the Switch/RCVR and it would show up as Generic 3D DLP but they went and screwed that up on me ...

Poking around a bit I found out basically how to go about it and gave it a try and it was fairly easy and worked really well. I used Monitor Asset Mananger/MonInfo(Run as Admin if you get an Error) to dump my DLP's inf(File > Create INF...). Then I connected everything thru my Switch/RCVR and once it was displaying properly thru the Switch/RCVR I merged the two(File > Merge extension bloc with INF... and Selected the INF). Then I just updated the Monitor drivers(Right-Click Desktop > Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings > Monitor > Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Browse my ... > Let me pick ... > Have Disk > Browse > Located Merged INF) and clicked through the prompts until it was installed. Edit:Mine shows up as 'Mitsubishi MEUSPTV11 (MEL31C8 EDID Override)' now ... so you know if it's in place. :)

What you posted is what I thought about. I've tried it and no go. If I plug my HDMI directly to the TV I can select 3DTV Play/Checkerboard and the setup shows HDTV as an option. I created an inf when directly connected. If I connect through the receiver it says 3D Discover and the setup only gives me the IR/Glasses to select, no HDTV so it won't work. I've tried your method and it refuses to work. I tried a couple of things I loaded up the inf I created from the direct connect while connected through the receiver, and no go. Strange. I found an inf for a Samsung 3D Monitor and if I install it while connected to the receiver it will allow checkerboard, but only stereo sound. So I tried merging the ext block with that 3D Monitor inf and it doesn't work. I can get 7.1 sound, but no 3D/checkerboard, wants the IR/glasses again. So odd.

The only other thing I can think of trying is dumping the RCVR's inf and then manually copying the Extension bloc and copying over the 3D Monitor's Extension bloc and saving it as a new file and importing it.
;Extension bloc #1, e.g., CEA-EXT, DID-EXT, etc. HKR,EDID_OVERRIDE,"1",Etc,Etc,Etc
If that doesn't work try opening the new inf with MonInfo, it might give an error message and say it fixed it. If so save it using MonInfo and then try importing that one ... sucks that it worked for me and not you, I'm not using 3DTV Play so that might be an issue but I thought other people have used modified EDIDs with it.

That's a good idea. Hmmm I really only want the CE audio data (formats supported) and CE speaker allocation data section. No way to really tell where that starts on the inf I guess though. Wish this was passive like tridef. Also would be nice to be able to directly edit the asset info in moninfo

The display that TsaebehT has is HDMI 1.3, so it's much easier to do. HDMI 1.3 contained the display id and video descriptors in the first data block. The extension block with HDMI 1.3 was primarily used for audio data descriptors. HDMI 1.4 added a lot of video data descriptors to the extension block, as well as increasing audio data. The problem is that all of the HDMI 1.4 stereoscopic flags are in the extension block. So with HDMI 1.4 you need to pick and chose what data blocks you swap around more carefully. Also, the bad thing with a PC that is if the display manufacturer issues an EDID override via windows update, you'll be able to override the primary data block but Microsoft will associate and use the windows update extension block giving it precedence over the original and altered extension blocks.

lol, no I didn't, I just thought it :) Joking aside, the extension block on HDMI 1.4 contains a lot more variants. With HDMI 1.3, a lot of times the first detailed resolution is considered the native and the display id was just a few bytes. With HDMI 1.4 instead of native, you can have up to five primaries that act as natives. The display also has a 24 bit IEEE registration identifier in the extension block.

To further complicate things, Nvidia has a history of dealing poorly with extension blocks. Here's a copy of the HDMI 1.3 revision, 1.4 is NDA. http://www.evernew.com.tw/HDMISpecification13a.pdf

So are you saying because my TV is 1.3 and assuming the monitor inf I am using is 1.4 that it will not quite work? Looks like I can merge the ext blocks, but it removes the sections stating it's a 3DTV/monitor.

Umm, you're TV is HDMI 1.4 isn't it? AFAIK Samsung didn't have any HDMI 1.3 LCD TVs only DLP. What I'm saying is that you can not merge the entire extension, you have to pick and choose the data blocks that you want.

Oh yeah it is 1.4, I was thinking of the receiver. Little over my head then. I was messing with the block in moninfo, can't get it. Time to hang up the gloves LOL

You might be able to use the inf from TsaebehT, I'm not certain if it would work or not because I have no personal experience with Checkerboard. Assuming that there isn't any difference between the Checkerboard format output by 3D Vision vs 3DTV Play, it should work. The thing with Checkerboard is that once it's formatted, it can't have any post processing applied or it breaks the image. The main difference would be the color profile, if it's close to the same, you should be fine.

Yeah, I've tried what was suggested, but for some reason the 3DTV Play won't activate. Only get the options for the IR/NV Glasses for setup, no HDTV. So either I get 2.0 sound or 3DTV Play. Can't seem to get both 3D and 7.1. I just know that TriDef isn't being supported much (or at all) any more, so wanted a second backup option.
