Sony 1080p 120hz 3D LED/LCD will it work? currently have a GTX580SC and want this monitor
1 / 2
After reading through these forums on stereo 3D, ive not yet found an answer.
My goal is this. get the 32" Sony LED/LCD 3D ready tv (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+BRAVIA+/+32%22+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+3D+LED-LCD+HDTV/2072094.p?id=1218308262106&skuId=2072094) and have it work with my PC as a monitor and use it for gaming and movies. i know i'll need the 3D glasses and some kind of emitter.
What glasses will i need? what emitter? nVidia? sony?
Will this even work as i want it to? full 1080p @ 120hz?
Ouch, i bought my 46" nx711 for 820+tax. Apparently 3d TV's will not yet do full resolution in games and it has to do with the tv itself being the only limitation (please correct me if im wrong). Only 720p will work and not 1360 x 768, but only 1280x720, although someone will prob mention checkerboard 3d, but i don't even know what that it.

Hi
This TV can support HDMI 1.4 3D modes which includes 720p60 and 1080p24. It cannot support 1080p60 3D mode.
This TV is supported using our 3DTV Play software. You will use the Sony 3D glasses with this TV, not 3D Vision glasses. You can purchase 3DTV Play from us for $39.99 at store.nvidia.com.
This SONY TV is currently not supported by 3DTV Play though. However we can easily add this TV to our support list. Please send us this TV's EDID, full instructions are here: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2774

ok, so pardon my lack of understanding on this new 3D lingo. As i understand, HDMI 1.4 is faster than 1.3, so im good there. 720p60 = 720 progressive @ 60hz? and 1080p24 = 1080 progressive @ 240hz? or 24fps? planning on getting sony glasses for this, and a blu-ray player for my PC.
This Monitor almost seems too dark. i've cranked up all the settings, backlight, brightness, contrast and what not all in the TV it self, and in the nVidia controll pnanel, yet it still seems a bit too dark. maybe its because its a TV, not a computer monitor? and what exactly will this 3DTV software do for me? i dont yet have 3D glasses for this so for now its just a big monitor...

Xann,
If you want to do 3D gaming, the Sony is out of the question as it cannot do checkerboard mode. Your only choice is one of the Samsung 3DTVs because it alone does native resolution/full frame rate 3D gaming (1920x1080 per frame, 60 frames per second with a 3D Vision IR emitter module). With Sony and other brands, you are stuck with scaled 720P Frame Packing or 1080P/24 Frame Packing, both of which give a poor gaming experience. Likewise, 3DTV Play is also limited to scaled 720P, or 1080P 24 frames per second with all TVs including Samsung.

checkerboard is not that much better than 720p, and in some situations it is worse.
you also have the option of Mitsubishi DLP 3d tv's (although the smallest is around 60"). what everyone is also conveniently not telling you is that all HDMI 1.4a 3d tv's have issues with crosstalk. while all DLP 3d tvs and projectors have zero crosstalk issues. I would highly recommend googling crosstalk on the set you are thinking about getting.
you can also get a 60" DLP for the same price, as that sony, and yes it supports the five year old half resolution checkerboard mode. this might not matter if you are space limited. if i was buying today- i would swoop up a used DLP tv and save my $$ until we get true HD 3d. ive seen 73" DLP for 800$ recently. these tv's work great for a monitor, and require no hacking.
also the sammys are not supported in checkerboard mode yet. they need to be hacked (drivers and hardware dongle). this will probably be added someday to 3dtvplay. if you dont have room for the larger DLP's defiantly go for the sammy over the sony if your computer is really fast. Just dont expect a crosstalk free 3d experience on anything other than DLP.
also, 3d halves your frame rate. and with checkerboard you are only seeing half the pixels of 1080p- your eyes never see all the pretty pixels. this is why 720p has advantages- you get native resolution 3d at higher frame rates with higher levels of anti aliasing. it depends on how extreme you want to go with the image quality and frame rates. with 1080p i would recommend SLI if you want to run top graphics.
the sammy will have a sharper image at the cost of crosstalk. DLP has a very good image with no crosstalk.

hdmi 1.3 is the same speed as 1.4a. they just added a bunch of 3d modes to the harware handshake to make 3d mode detection automatic. for example, checkerboard, rollers holly grail of non HD 3d has been out since 07- running on HDMI 1.3.
1080p24 is 24FPS
I cant help you on the brightness bud. maybe it has a break in period. most of these new HDTV's are pretty lame.

No, TV's are much brighter than monitors in general based on my research. Typically TV's are 450 to 500 cd/m2 and monitors are 300 to 350cd/m2. Which i large part of the reason i made the switch to TV's. I used to have the premier gaming monitor, the Dell 3007wfp high color version and the latest revision, and i broke it and had to switch to my old 720p Sharp TV, which to my great surprise blew the Dell away with its vibrant colors, brightness, deeper blacks, and much lower pixel response time. I will never use another computer monitor with low brightness levels and i kind of rubs me wrong that i used it for so long.

well, since i already purchased the Sony a couple days ago, i've found a few neat things on it. built in 3D emitter. all i need are the glasses. even tho all specs on this say its 120hz, it has an XR240 engine in it. the sales person i spoke with yesterday (i've also worked with him for years in the past) told me that the XR engine is the refresh rate. explaining that its really a 240hz refresh. part of me says "ok cool!" while the other part of me says "sony, internet, owners manual, all say 120hz... so, my sales guy whom i trust... is bassackwards."
at any rate, arent the samsungs only 60hz @ 32"? my armoire im using wont fit anything larger than 32". sucks that i cant get a 40" in here. besides, im sidding less than 2' from it. if i lean back, its still within arms reach. so no dice on a DLP... sorry lol!
Checkerboarding? i understand that this is a way for 3D to be viewed properly? all im using this for really is gaming. MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE a few movies. i dont even have a blu-ray in my PC....
so, with the KDL-32EX720 that im using, what in a samsung is better? and why? i dont care about "personal preferance" because i'll tell you all day long why redheads are more fun than blondes. so why would a samsung or toshiba or mitsubishi or even a crap brand like "Dynex" or "Frumpkin" be better than what i got now?
thanks for the info! im loving the new knowledge!

That TV should look fine. I've seen some of the higher end models in the Bravia line, and the 3D is amazing. I certainly didn't notice any cross-talk, nor did I on the Panasonic VT25 plasma. And HDMI 1.4 is a data transport protocol. It has absolutely nothing to do with the display panel or crosstalk whatsoever. There are HDMI 1.4 displays that are LCD, Plasma and DLP and they all have their own properties in terms of ghosting.

Checkerboard, that's it! Sony is fine for everything EXCEPT 3D gaming. But if you 3D game, then Sony is out of the question because it can't do full native res per frame gaming at 60 FPS . Only the Samsung can. The difference between the Sony's 720P and Samsungs 1920x1080/60 checkerboard can't be overstated. To illustate this, there's a tutorial thread that explains how to access CB mode in 3D Vision. That thread has over one quarter *million* views, more than all other threads combined. That should tell you how valuble CB mode is to members in this forum. With the Sony, you'll be doomed to scaled 720P and its' hideous image quality.
Finally, if a person makes an appearence in this thread to trash all HDMI1.4 3DTVs, pay no attention to his rant.

ya dude your tv is fine. i just upgraded from Mitsubishi checkerboard to native 720p DLP projector and i coundnt be happier with a 130 inch screen over 65". the difference between checkerboard and native 720 is very small (12%).

I think you'll be pretty happy with that FOV. Just out of curiosity, I put my broken 30" Dell back up on my desk about where it used to be and in front of my new 46" and the FOV on the 30" was just about the same with the 16x10 ratio 30" having more vertical FOV than the 16x9 46" TV.

Matt61185, create a new thread, this one is a different subject. Make sure to mention what resolution your trying to run the game at. (Doing the internet math, i'd say theres a 64% chance he still posts here. 41.8% now that i've said this... /smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> )

Thanks - Jack

Likewise, 3DTV Play is also limited to scaled 720P, or 1080P 24 frames per second with all TVs including Samsung.

you also have the option of Mitsubishi DLP 3d tv's (although the smallest is around 60"). what everyone is also conveniently not telling you is that all HDMI 1.4a 3d tv's have issues with crosstalk. while all DLP 3d tvs and projectors have zero crosstalk issues.

I will never use another computer monitor with low brightness levels and i kind of rubs me wrong that i used it for so long.

at any rate, arent the samsungs only 60hz @ 32"? my armoire im using wont fit anything larger than 32". sucks that i cant get a 40" in here. besides, im sidding less than 2' from it. if i lean back, its still within arms reach. so no dice on a DLP...
